Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning Seemingly Leaked for August 2020

Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning has seemingly leaked on the Microsoft Store and will apparently make its way to at least Xbox One on August 11, 2020.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning is a remastered version of the 2012’s Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning that was released on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

This remaster appears to include all DLC, including Teeth of Naros and Legend of Dead Kel, and will have “improved graphical fidelity.”

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=kingdoms-of-amalur-re-reckoning-screenshots&captions=true”]

Amalur’s story is penned by New York Times’ best-selling author R.A. Salvatore and was also developed by Spawn creator Todd McFarlane and Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion lead designed Ken Rolston.

In our review of Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, we said “Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning isn’t the perfect game. Its random technical hiccups and inconsistent art style certainly holds it back from even higher levels of greatness. But no matter what you’re looking for, whether it be amazing gameplay, immersive storytelling or perhaps a riveting new world to explore as you fully customize and re-customize your character at will, Reckoning has it all.”

Kingdoms of Amalur was originally developed by 38 Studios and was published by EA. In 2018, THQ Nordic bought the property from the now-defunct studio, although EA still owned the publishing rights. It appears they worked out a deal to make this happen.

Amalur came with a ton of controversy, as the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation filed a lawsuit against 38 Studios founder and ex-Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling and other executives. 38 Studios went out of business following a $ 75 million dollar loan supported by Rhode Island taxpayers.

What Did the Games Industry Think 2020 Would Be Like in 2010?

Cast your mind back to 2010. It was a time when games – by and large – weren’t a service. Nor were many of them free-to-play. Back then loot boxes were on the fringe and micro-transactions were really only just getting going. In 2010, we were still playing on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and the Wii. League of Legends was a new thing, as was Minecraft. World of Warcraft, meanwhile, was ancient – five years old! Ten years ago people weren’t spending their free time absorbed in Let’s Plays or watching players broadcasting their games. At this point, Twitch didn’t exist. Remember Justin.tv? And thanks to the Wii, motion control seemed an inevitable part of the future, with PlayStation and Microsoft both about to jump in, with Move and Kinect (then known as Natal) respectively.

A lot has changed, then. Would it have been possible to predict where we’d be by now, in 2020? Let’s find out, because ten years ago IGN polled a panel of industry veterans about what they thought gaming would be like in 2020. Let’s see how their predictions worked out.

Games Will Be Everywhere and Played by Everyone

A common thread amongst our panel back in 2010 was the belief that games would continue to become more mainstream; that the audience would expand to encompass wider demographics. “Nintendo have recently hit a gold mine with the Wii and the DS and the brand new market of non-gamers it’s attracted,” Paul Denning, Senior Gameplay Programmer at Rocksteady Studios (the Batman: Arkham games) told us back then. “Microsoft and Sony are eyeing the market and licking their lips. Both are bringing out their own tech to entice people to their platform and that can only be a good thing.”

The traditional platform holders didn’t really deliver when it came to their own tech. Move was underwhelming and never became core to PlayStation’s offering, while Kinect proved to be a costly distraction for Microsoft, seeing the company chasing a broad audience while under-serving its existing player base.

Denning was, nevertheless, absolutely correct about games becoming more mainstream. It’s just that Microsoft and Sony weren’t the prime drivers of that change. “In 2010… I said many things will be the same, and on the surface they are,” says Gareth Wilson, who worked on Project Gotham Racing 3 and 4 as Lead Designer at Bizarre Creations ten years ago, and now oversees new IP development as Creative Director at Traveller’s Tales, the studio famous for its LEGO video games. “The big three are still battling it out in the console wars. But scratch the surface and things have changed massively. Very few people predicted the rise of free-to-play in 2010, first on mobile and then on PC and console. If you’d told me ten years ago the biggest game in 2019 was a free-to-play multiplatform shooter I would have been very surprised!”[poilib element=”quoteBox” parameters=”excerpt=%22If%20you%E2%80%99d%20told%20me%20ten%20years%20ago%20the%20biggest%20game%20in%202019%20was%20a%20free-to-play%20multiplatform%20shooter%20I%20would%20have%20been%20very%20surprised!%E2%80%9D%20-%20Gareth%20Wilson”]

Free-to-play games were just one part of the broadening of the market. Other key changes were the explosion of mobile gaming, the growth of digital marketplaces, the influence of key regions outside the West, and the rise of Let’s Plays and streaming. All these factors helped contribute to growth that has seen global sales of game hardware and software go from $ 67 billion in 2010 according to a report from research firm Gartner, to more than $ 160 billion in 2020 according to research firm Newzoo.

Our panel foresaw many knock-on effects from games becoming more mainstream too. “I believe video games will become an important extension of all visual entertainment,” said Chris Pickford, who was an associate producer working on Project Gotham Racing and other titles at Bizarre Creations at the time, and is now working on an unannounced multiplayer action game at Improbable Game Studios. “There will be lots more crossover between different media formats – films, games, websites, even theme parks! As companies get smarter with their IPs and learn to manage their ideas, they’ll be able to use different aspects of them in different ways, and create full encompassing experiences for the end user.”

Nintendo’s present strategy is a great example of this, allowing it to use the strength of its own IP to expand its reach and awareness through mobile games, theme parks, movies, and more. Strong IP and cross-platform support also allowed Nintendo’s Amiibos to ride the rise and fall of the toys-to-life category, whereas the likes of Skylanders and Disney Infinity are now just footnotes.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/03/12/lego-super-mario-reveal-trailer”]

We’ll See An Interface Revolution

One of the bigger topics in 2010 was the idea that the next decade would see significant interface innovations. “We’re going to see some fundamental changes to both the input and the output of games devices,” said Hermen Hulst, former Managing Director of Guerrilla Games (Killzone, Horizon: Zero Dawn), now head of Worldwide Studios. “Gestural interfaces are already happening, of course, and the screen as we know it might be a thing of the past too. I’m not sure if there will be a complete virtualization by 2020, but I like the idea of a wearable device – one that we control and interact with through natural hand gestures, and that we use to augment our physical world.”

Hulst’s prediction is very much the end goal for devices like HoloLens, but the path to the maturation of that technology – and AR in general – is proving to be a long one. Back in 2010, it was the success of the Wii that was the impetus for a lot of the conversations around gesture controls, but despite the fact that both Microsoft and Sony were prepping their own solutions, many members of the panel weren’t entirely convinced.

“There will be a lot of experimenting with interfaces during the next ten years but I think the basic general purpose controllers that will be used by the majority of the games will stay pretty similar to what they are now,” said Avalanche Studios Lead Game Designer Peter Johansson, who has worked on the Just Cause series and Mad Max. “Pressing a button is still often the easiest way to do an action. Motion controls will play a part but have matured into being used where it really enhances the experience.”

That’s certainly proven to be true for console gaming, where we use motion controls in combination with buttons to do things like throw Cappy in Super Mario Odyssey, or guide petals around a meadow in Flower. While motion controls were ultimately a sideshow, we have nonetheless been part of an actual interface revolution over the last ten years that has fundamentally changed how we lead our digital lives and play games on the go.

In the last ten years touch screen devices have become our ever-present technology portals, and a whole generation of kids are now growing up as touch screen natives. The new era ushered in by smartphones represented a paradigm shift, and games in turn adapted to play a large role in the new ecosystem.[poilib element=”quoteBox” parameters=”excerpt=In%20the%20last%20ten%20years%20touch%20screen%20devices%20have%20become%20our%20ever-present%20technology%20portals%2C%20and%20a%20whole%20generation%20of%20kids%20are%20now%20growing%20up%20as%20touch%20screen%20natives.”]

There have been other advances in interfaces too – geolocation games like Pokemon GO make the entire globe a playspace, toys came to life in our living rooms, and the re-emergence of VR, and in particular room-scale VR, changed how we interact with virtual spaces… and spurred some controller evolution too.

Digital Distribution Will Be Transformative

The rise of the smartphone came hand in hand with the growing importance of digital storefronts. Ten years ago, Steam was well-established, the App Store was beginning its meteoric growth after launching with a selection of 500 apps in 2008, and Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Store had been around since late 2004 and late 2006 respectively. Digital distribution was here to stay, but exactly how much it would change the games industry was still up for debate.

“Digital distribution will be huge,” declared Jeremiah Slaczka, Co-Founder and Creative Director of 5th Cell, which is best known for the Scribblenauts games. “It changed the way music is sold and I think it will have a huge impact on games as well. In 2000 we were just being introduced to 300kbps DSL. In 2010 10mbps is normal in a lot of places. Where will we be in 2020? Cloud computing is a possible avenue. I don’t think physical media will be wiped out, but think it’s possible for the majority of games, like music, to be downloaded from online-enabled platforms. It’s happening already now.”

“I’ll be amazed if we’re still doing boxed product in 2020,” commented Jamie Jackson, who was Creative Director at DJ Hero developer FreeStyleGames and is now Chief Creative Officer at Mythical Games, a technology studio with a blockchain-based platform. “Digital distribution may be the only way to access your entertainment, be it games, TV, or films.”

Other panelists were more conservative. “Although online distribution will become even more important (expect full game downloads to be commonplace),” said Traveller’s Tales’ Gareth Wilson, “people will still be buying games from shops in ten years time. There will be people who simply prefer to physically own a title, and a download doesn’t make a good birthday present.”

It was Dan Greenawalt, Game Director at Forza Motorsport developer Turn 10 Studios, however, who really honed in on how digital distribution will fundamentally change game publishing itself, as well as how we’ll interact with games. Gaming, he said, “will continue to trend along the same lines as recent developments: ubiquity of games and devices catering to a bigger and even more diverse audience who are hungry for interactive entertainment; digital distribution having effectively leveled the publishing field so you have risky, experimental indie games coexisting with huge blockbuster titles in a virtual and sustainable marketplace; and of course, the uber-connectedness of it all – with social media and user-generated content playing central roles in how players define themselves and the experiences they have with the games they play.”

The Definition of a “Game” Will Continue to Evolve

But what, exactly, would those games be like? “Of course a few new genres will come into existence, probably enabled by the fact that our games consoles are increasingly networked, mobile, and equipped with innovative interfaces,” PlayStation’s Worldwide Studios head Hermen Hulst told us. “But most of today’s basic genres will still exist in 2020, just like most of today’s genres were already there in 2000. I guess playing a game like Cowboys and Indians is always appealing, regardless of the state of technology.”

Hulst was certainly spot on in terms of new genres being enabled by networking and mobility. The battle royale genre is absolutely the product of a thoroughly networked age, for instance, and the genre has a large audience playing on mobile too. Auto Battlers also, are very much at the nexus of networking and mobile gaming. Other new genres from the last decade include incremental games (initially popularised by Cookie Clicker) and walking simulators (spearheaded by Dear Esther, which technically was available as a free-to-play mod in 2008, but only commercially released in 2012).

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/07/04/an-introduction-to-auto-chess-teamfight-tactics-dota-underlords-the-auto-battler-genre”]

A number of other notable genres found the spotlight in the last ten years. Modern survival games kicked off with Minecraft, but evolved when DayZ came on the scene. Digital CCGs blew up, thanks to Hearthstone. You could also argue that this was the decade of loot shooters (Borderlands was released in 2009), hero shooters (Team Fortress 2 led the way in 2007) and Souls-likes (Demon’s Souls came out in 2009).

Avalanche Studios’ Peter Johansson had a broader response to what the games of 2020 would be like. “The definition of what constitutes a game will be less clear since all games will be so integrated with other forms of entertainment,” he said.

This is certainly becoming true. Think about the distinction between a game like Her Story and a TV show like Black Mirror: Bandersnatch. The lines can be very blurred indeed. Telltale’s Minecraft: Story Mode is another interesting example; it now exists as both a game and an interactive show on Netflix, in which the game’s action sequences are automated, but you can still make all the dialogue decisions.

In a general sense the definition of what a “game” is continues to evolve. Ten years ago it had already changed drastically, with game devices capable of encompassing a broad suite of experiences, from Brain Training and Nintendogs to Wii Fit. Since then we’ve seen walking simulators put storytelling front and centre, we’ve seen incremental games create never-ending, ever-escalating gameplay loops, and we’ve seen a whole lot of experimentation – think 80 Days, Heavy Rain, The Stanley Parable, P.T., Return of the Obra Dinn, and many more.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/04/25/how-pt-became-a-modern-urban-legend”]

Online Connectivity Will Be Taken for Granted

“All games will be online but by that I don’t mean massive multiplayer,” said Avalanche Studios’ Peter Johansson in 2010. “‘Online’ will be firmly integrated into our way of life and games will naturally tap into that connectivity. I’m talking about social networks, digital distribution, downloadable content, mobile connectivity, community, etc. There’s so much untapped potential there of which we’ve only just begun to scratch the surface.”

Being online – or at least having the ability to be online at any time – is very much a given in many parts of the world now, with games wrapped up in that expectation in countless ways. Blizzard Entertainment’s President J. Allen Brack, who was working on World of Warcraft at the time, also touched on what that might mean. “You’ll have everything online,” he said. “There’ll still be single player games, but there’ll be a lot more connectedness in games than we have now. I think potentially you’ll look back on the idea of connecting to small numbers of players like we have right now as kind of quaint. I’m a big believer in the ‘everyone playing together’ kind of model and there will be more games that come along that are everyone playing together.”

Connecting a hundred players in games like PUBG and Fortnite is no big deal in 2020, nor is queueing into just about any mode of popular online titles like Call of Duty or League of Legends. All of that works so smoothly – the matchmaking, the low queue times – because behind the scenes there are hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of active players.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/03/23/call-of-duty-warzone-review”]

Of course, there are issues with everyone playing together – toxicity in chat can be a major problem, and so voice chat is often restricted to players that are grouped up, which is a disappointing – but not unexpected – limitation of our always-connected age. It has the byproduct, however, of reducing humanisation in many of our online interactions.

That humanisation can be absent in other places too. The ubiquitous nature of social media and online life has introduced direct lines of communication between members of the games industry and consumers, for both better and worse. At its worst, this has resulted in campaigns of harassment, and the formation of an us versus them mentality. At its best, it has led to tight knit communities in which gamers are actively involved in the development process.[poilib element=”quoteBox” parameters=”excerpt=The%20ubiquitous%20nature%20of%20social%20media%20and%20online%20life%20has%20introduced%20direct%20lines%20of%20communication%20between%20members%20of%20the%20games%20industry%20and%20consumers%2C%20for%20both%20better%20and%20worse.”]

Also, for better and worse, gamers have shown over the last decade that they can wield real power. Recent examples include the overwhelming response to Blizzard’s heavy-handed handling of pro Hearthstone player Blitzchung, who made a pro Hong Kong statement at the end of an official tournament stream, and was stripped of prize money and banned for a year, effectively ending his career. (The company later walked the punishment back.) EA’s implementation of loot boxes and pay-to-win elements in Star Wars Battlefront 2 also became a cause to rally round, eventually seeing the game’s microtransactions disabled shortly before the game’s wide release, so large was the furor.

Other aspects of the games industry have also come under the spotlight in the last decade. We’ve seen revelations of sexism and toxicity at companies like Riot Games and we’ve read about the persistence of crunch culture in studios including Epic Games, in which developers work long hours for weeks or months on end to hit a deadline. Consumers and lawmakers have also targeted game companies over loot boxes, accusing the industry of employing exploitative business models that are tantamount to gambling.

Rising Development Costs Will Impact Design

Micro-transactions were already part of the conversation in 2010. Street Fighter Series Executive Producer Yoshinori Ono saw how things would develop, commenting that micro-transactions were now “in almost every game released. This has also created a new marketplace (literally) and this trend will continue. Games will have to be designed with this in mind.”

The changes to the mobile games market over the last decade really highlight what Ono foresaw. Where initially developers could price their games somewhat fairly, they quickly had to drop to a dollar at most, and before long the expectation for consumers became that mobile games are free… which meant that revenue had to come from in-app purchases.

On PC and consoles, development costs continued their long rise, so the increasing importance of loot boxes and other micro-transactions, not to mention the introduction of concepts like season passes, were part of a broader shift towards business models that could help generate ongoing revenue.

These factors, alongside others – such as the emergence of free-to-play on PC and the rise of early access/playable alphas – culminated in one of the defining trends of the last ten years, that many games became a service.

This was accompanied by a move towards smaller release slates from many of the big publishers. In late 2009, for instance, after laying off 1500 staff and cancelling a number of projects, then-Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello said the company would be cutting its releases from more than 50 titles in 2009 to around 40 in the 2010 fiscal year. Fast forward to the fiscal year ending March 2021 and EA will be releasing 14 games, and that includes two remasters and several annual sports titles.

Another way publishers have combated rising development costs and team sizes is through “external development”, or outsourcing, which is a large part of modern game development. They also continued the well-established trend of taking advantage of tax breaks or lower labour costs by opening studios in financially favourable locations.

Major publishers may have released less games in the last decade than in the decade before, but overall we now have more games to choose from each year, and that’s due to the rise of independent developers. To put it in perspective, in 2010, there were 276 new games released on Steam. By 2016 this had jumped to 4,207, and by 2018 it hit 9,050. Gaming is now a saturated market for lower profile titles, where quality is no guarantee of success and discoverability is one of the biggest hurdles.[poilib element=”quoteBox” parameters=”excerpt=In%202010%2C%20there%20were%20276%20new%20games%20released%20on%20Steam.%20By%202018%20it%20was%209%2C050.”]

China Could Play a Major Role

The landscape has changed dramatically, but there’s a large aspect we haven’t even mentioned yet – the ascendancy of China. China came to be the largest gaming market in the world in 2015 and held that position until 2019. (2019 revenues were predicted to be USD $ 36.5 billion, just shy of the U.S. market prediction of USD $ 36.9 billion.)

Rocksteady’s Paul Denning singled out China in our original roundtable. “There’s a huge untapped potential in places like China that if used correctly could help the industry grow,” he said. “Already there’s been some companies that have started development there… Ubisoft have already started this process with their EndWar team for instance.” Denning was talking about making games in China, and essentially anticipating that big games would increasingly be made by studios all around the world. 2018’s Assassin’s Creed Odyssey was created by ten studios, for instance.

China has proven to be an important emerging market too. In the last decade a number of publishers from other parts of the world have established large player bases there, such as Bluehole Studio with PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) and Blizzard Entertainment with Overwatch. Both partnered with Chinese companies to make it happen. During PUBG’s early access success Tencent Games inked a deal to publish the Windows version of PUBG in China, then developed what would come to be known as PUBG: Mobile. NetEase has published Blizzard’s games in China since 2008, and is a development partner on Diablo Immortal.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/03/24/pubg-mobile-review”]

Even so, there is a strict approvals process around what can be released, so many non-Chinese games must be modified before they’re greenlit. This was the case for the Windows version of PUBG, while PUBG: Mobile wasn’t approved for monetisation in China at all, forcing Tencent to release the similar, but state-friendly, Peacekeeper Elite. All publishers are subject to the whims of the Chinese government too. It instituted a nine-month approval freeze on new games in 2018, for instance, and has also introduced measures to curb hours played by minors.

Over the last decade, as publishers like Activision-Blizzard have looked to grow their mainland Chinese audience, so too have Chinese companies grown their foothold outside the country. Tencent – now the largest games publisher in the world – has full ownership of Riot Games, a 40% stake in Epic Games, a 5% stake in Ubisoft, and to come full circle, a 5% stake in Activision-Blizzard, and more than 10% in Bluehole Studio. And that’s just some of its investments.

Gaming Will Be a Pillar of the Entertainment Industry

The games industry in 2020 is both familiar yet radically different to its 2010 self. In terms of reach and revenue it has expanded significantly, yet many of the drivers of those changes have only come into their own in the last ten years: mobile, free-to-play, digital distribution, the importance of China.

Nonetheless, our panel made some astute observations about where we might be by now. And while many saw significant challenges ahead, due to factors like escalating budgets and team sizes, there was also a sense that gaming would be more important than ever by 2020.[poilib element=”quoteBox” parameters=”excerpt=The%20games%20industry%20in%202020%20is%20both%20familiar%20yet%20radically%20different%20to%20its%202010%20self.”]

“My take is that the industry will strengthen its place as one of the main pillars of the entertainment industry,” said Yannis Mallat, former CEO of Ubisoft Montreal (Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry), now CEO of Ubisoft’s Canadian Studios, “becoming even more mass market, widening its reach and cementing its place as a cultural product.”

How might things look in another ten years? Keep an eye on IGN in the coming days, as we’re going to find out.

Swimwear Trend 2020: Staycation Mode

WWD style director Alex Badia and his team styled via Zoom in a series of meetings, including a virtual “run-through” with the photographer unpacking clothes two days prior. On shoot day, the model was directed via Zoom on which look to put on and how to style it, like showing her a Grace Kelly reference to tie the scarf and what props to try, which were sent to her direct from Target. There was a Zoom meeting with the makeup artist two days before the shoot, who did sample looks on herself and sent new, unused makeup to the photographer. The makeup artist did a FaceTime tutorial with the model on how to apply the makeup one day prior to the shoot, and again on shoot day, while the model styled her hair as directed by Alex Badia.

As for the location: The shoot took place on the photographer’s rooftop to make distancing easy (and after he had been quarantining for six weeks). The result: a modern look at nostalgia in these buy-now styles, from pouf-sleeve tops and high-waisted silhouettes to playful prints.

Market Moments: Fall 2020 Stripes Fashion Trend

Like many others in the industry, fashion p.r. agencies have had to pivot operations and adapt under lockdown. The new normal has given rise to digital press days, where new collections and product launches are highlighted on Instagram instead of physical showrooms, with trends easier to decipher as assets are all in one place.
From the most recent digital press days, stripes have emerged as a bold classic for fall 2020. Whether consumers will gravitate toward minimalist or maximalist dress once lockdown measures are lifted, stripes are a safe middle ground. Here, examples from Ganni, Acne Studios and Mozh Mozh.

Acronis True Image 2020 Cloud Backup Review

Acronis True Image has long been known as the go-to app for system imaging and drive cloning, but the company also includes cloud backup in its True Image 2020 suite. That means you can combine local backups with a copy in the cloud, which is crucial when it comes to protecting your data from fire, theft, and other types of catastrophic loss.

Cloud backup options vary wildly in price and functionality, and are increasingly necessary for peace of mind and data security. I thoroughly evaluated Acronis True Image along with several other leading packages based on three main criteria: pricing, features, and performance.

Acronis True Image – Design, Features, and Pricing

Despite being an advanced backup tool, Acronis’ interface is very user-friendly. Buttons are big and clear, your storage is color coded so you can see what’s taking up space, and Acronis’ many, many tools are organized neatly into sections away from the main backup window. It explains every feature as you set it up, so you don’t have to click on “help” Icons to find out how anything works.

The backup process itself is dead simple, taking only a few clicks: you can back up certain folders and files, or back up an image of your entire machine. Acronis lets you back up to an external drive, a NAS, or to Acronis’ cloud servers (if you pay a monthly subscription fee).

image2

The structure of that subscription fee is a bit confusing at first, but the comparison wizard helps you choose what’s right for you. The Standard version is a one-time purchase of $ 60, which just gets you a license to the software that performs local backups. If you’re backing up to the cloud, you’ll need a subscription to the Advanced version instead: for 250GB of space, you can pay $ 50 per year for one computer, $ 80 per year for three computers, or $ 100 per year for five computers. If you need more space, add $ 20 per year for 500GB.

Any more than 500GB, and you’ll need a subscription to Premium, which adds a couple small features and allows for more space: 1TB for one computer at $ 100 per year, all the way up to 5TB for five computers at $ 320 per year, with many options in between. It’s not the most expensive service I tested, but it is on the pricier side. Some throw in just 50GB of storage, and some like Backblaze are unlimited, and then others like IDrive start out at 2TB, so as you can see the options are kind of all over the map.

The value comparison depends highly on the number of machines you’re backing up, especially since they share the same pool of storage. For multiple machines, Acronis can get quite expensive, but it packs its program with extra features to make it more enticing.

Some of those features are tangentially related to backups, like the “Archive” feature, which scans your hard drive for large files, and allows you to back up ones you rarely use to the cloud to free up space on your hard drive. Acronis also has a syncing tool, à la Dropbox/Google, for syncing files between machines. Acronis can also clone one disk to another (which is useful if you’re upgrading to a new SSD or hard drive), build rescue disks (so you can fix your PC if it won’t boot), and convert your backups to a virtual hard drive for use in a virtual machine. It even has a module that can back up your mobile devices and social media accounts.

Those are all relatively useful, but it also has a lot of features that feel more like unnecessary padding. For example, it comes with a system cleaner (which works fine, but doesn’t seem much better than Windows’ built-in tools), a ransomware monitor, and a “Try & Decide” feature that lets you make changes to your computer, then roll them back if you don’t like them. Most of these tools feel “tacked on,” and I feel that most people would rather pay less to eschew some of these less important add-ons. (I’ll be focusing mostly on the backup and cloud features for this review.)

Acronis True Image – Backup and Recovery

Despite being overloaded with features (denoted by tabs along the left side of the window), Acronis puts the important stuff front and center. The “Backup” tab along the top is where the magic happens: you’re given two big boxes in the center of the screen, one for the backup source, and one for the backup destination. By default, Acronis is set to back up your entire computer, but you can click on a box to change your backup to only certain drives, files, folders, or to back up a mobile device.

I recommend backing up the entire machine, since this is one of Acronis’ biggest strengths: allowing you to create a full image of your computer so it can be restored, exactly as it is now, if something goes awry. Next, you’ll select where you want to back it up. You can choose an external drive, the Acronis cloud, or a custom location (like a NAS). You’ll also have an option to encrypt your backup, which I recommend. Acronis supports deduplication, so if you move a file to a different folder, it won’t back it up all over again.

image1

Acronis’ default settings work well, but you can click the Options button here to further customize how the backup works. You can change the schedule, prevent the computer from going to sleep while backing up, get email notifications about the backup state, exclude certain files or file types, choose how many versions of a file Acronis keeps, adjust how much bandwidth Acronis uses, and a whole lot more. There is a page where you’ll find a lot of advanced settings too, and while some of them seem more advanced than they need to be (why do I need to set up an SMTP server for email notifications?), tech-savvy users will love the number of options Acronis provides.

image3

The other tabs in the sidebar correspond to Acronis’ other features. The Archive tab analyzes your hard drive so you can offload large files to an external drive or the cloud. The Sync tab lets you set up Dropbox-like syncing, and the Tools tab contains…well, pretty much everything else. The “Clone Disk,” “Rescue Media Builder,” and “Acronis Universal Restore” are the more useful features here, allowing you to migrate your data to a new PC or rescue it when you run into problems.

The other features on this page are interesting, but generally not anything I’d use, since they’re either well covered by Windows’ built-in tools or just not necessary for most users’ day-to-day computing. Though they’re there if you want to explore them.

Speaking of security, Acronis offers end-to-end AES-256 encryption for your backups, meaning you can protect them with a private encryption key. Even the Acronis service itself won’t be able to see your data, which means it’s as private as can be in the cloud. I didn’t notice any slowdowns or other downsides to using this feature, so turn it on – and remember your password, because if you forget it, that data will be locked up forever.

Acronis is, however, still missing a very important security feature: two-factor authentication. Every cloud-oriented service should have this option to protect you from password thieves, especially backup programs that can hold literally all your personal data. It’s truly bonkers that Acronis– which has packed its program with so many features – continues to neglect something so important.

Acronis True Image – Recovery Options

The Backup section offers two useful tabs: Activity and Recovery. Activity shows when you backed up last, and Recovery allows you to select files for…well, recovery. Again, Acronis is remarkably intuitive to use, and the recovery process is no different. Just select the files you want to recover from the folder tree, then Acronis will ask where you want to restore them.

image1

You can also click “Recovery Options” to get an email notification when the process is complete, run a command before or after the restore, choose which files to overwrite, and more. When you’re ready, click “Recover Now,” and Acronis will restore your files. Acronis doesn’t offer a courier service, unfortunately, so downloading your files is the only way to restore them. This can take a while if you’re recovering from the cloud, but with Acronis’ robust local backup features, I highly recommend backing up locally too, using the cloud backup only as a just-in-case-of-disaster option.

Acronis True Image – Testing

Acronis has a lot going on, but the basics are pretty easy to use, and users shouldn’t find it too intrusive. It’ll only nag you when you tell it to, using the notification settings mentioned earlier, and customer support is very good. Acronis used a maximum of 163MB of RAM on my test system, while CPU usage hovered around 7 percent of my 2.7GHz i7-7500U during the backup process (with encryption enabled and the main window open).

For such a feature-packed program, that’s not bad, and does a good job of using bandwidth effectively. My initial backup uploaded at around 163Mbps, even with encryption enabled. Restoration speeds were even better, easily maxing out my 200Mbps connection and restoring my 2GB test folder in 1 minute and 26 seconds. Overall, Acronis was easily the fastest program I tested, which is great provided you also have a fast connection. (Still, I recommend using the cloud as your second line of defense—local backups from an external drive or NAS will be much faster.)

Finally, I contacted support for most of the backup programs I tested, usually just with questions or clarifications. Acronis was responsive and helpful, though it did take a couple of back-and-forth emails to answer my question.

Purchasing Guide

The pricing for Acronis True Image depends on whether you want cloud storage (and how much of it you need), and how many computers you want to protect. As of press time in May 2020, the Standard version was $ 50 with no cloud storage. Advanced offers 250GB of cloud storage for $ 50 per year, or 500GB for $ 70 per year – with higher yearly prices as you add more computers to your plan. If you want more than 500GB, you’ll have to spring for Premium, which starts at $ 100 per year for 1TB on one computer, with upgrade options for more machines and cloud storage.

Meet the Graduates: Standout Senior Collections From the Class of 2020

Fashion colleges across the country this year have canceled their senior thesis collection shows — a tradition that many graduating students weigh heavier than commencement. These longstanding shows, typically held en masse in mid-May, act as a young designer’s coming-out party to the industry — with some standout collections even leading to immediate store orders or jobs with prestigious labels.
The class of 2020 has seen this tradition upended by the coronavirus crisis. In mid-March, many students moved back to their childhood homes to complete their thesis collections and finish coursework remotely. They were left with limited materials and equipment — forcing some to alter their collections and adapt to their surroundings. For students now living at home, it remains unclear when they can resume an independent life and look for job opportunities.

Fashion Trust Arabia Names 2020 Award Winners

LONDON — Five young designers have scooped this year’s Fashion Trust Arabia awards, which took place online due to lockdown measures from the coronavirus.
The winners are the Sudanese designer Omer Asim, who received the ready-to-wear category; Ammanii, who won in the jewelry category; footwear designer Andrea Wazen, who was named accessories designer of the year, and Yousef Akbar, who took home the award in the dedicated eveningwear category, while the new Franca Sozzani Award for emerging talent was given to Zeid Hijazi.
The designers were chosen from 25 finalists by a judging committee that included the likes of Christian Louboutin, Yoon Ambush, Diane von Furstenberg, Alber Elbaz, Elizabeth Salzman and Olivier Rousteing, all of whom met the designers via a series of Zoom conferences held last month.
Each winner will receive financial support of up to $ 200,000, as well as industry mentorship and the opportunity to sell their spring 2021 collection through FTA partner Matchesfashion.com.

Despite the cancellation of the awards ceremony, which was set to take place in Qatar in March, the FTA said it wanted to forge ahead and give international exposure to Middle Eastern talent.

Fox Announces Fall 2020 Schedule with Coronavirus Contingencies

Filming in the entertainment industry has largely ground to a halt due to COVID-19, but the broadcast TV networks are starting to announce their fall lineups for later this year.

Fox is first network to announce how it plans to lay out its fall schedule, leaning on animated shows, reality programming, sports, already-completed dramas, and acquired series from other cable and streaming partners to beef up its roster while the ability to film scripted series is still uncertain. We’ll update this post with ABC, NBC, CBS, and The CW’s fall schedules as they’re announced.

The networks aren’t expected to announce exact premiere dates until later this summer, but these early announcements help give us a sense of how each network plans to program every weeknight, and which shows will be held until midseason.

Fox Fall 2020 TV Schedule

Renewed and New TV Shows on Fox

Fox has renewed reality shows The Masked Singer and Masterchef Junior, along with animated comedies The Simpsons, Family Guy, Bob’s Burgers, and Bless the Harts. With animated shows able to continue production and reality shows more easily able to be filmed without audiences and with social distancing precautions on set, this makes the lineup a little more secure from coronavirus-related delays.

New series premiering on Fox this fall include Next, “a propulsive, fact-based thriller about the emergence of a deadly, rogue artificial intelligence that combines pulse-pounding action with a layered examination of how technology is invading our lives,” starring John Slattery, and Filthy Rich, “a southern Gothic family soap in which wealth, power and religion collide – with outrageously soapy results. When the patriarch (Gerald McRaney) of a mega-rich Southern family, famed for creating a wildly successful Christian television network, dies in a plane crash, his wife (Kim Cattrall) and family are stunned to learn that he fathered three illegitimate children, all of whom are written into his will, threatening their family name and fortune.” Both shows have already been filmed and were initially planned to debut as part of the 2019-2020 season.

Fox will also be the broadcast home of Bad Boys spinoff LA’s Finest, which follows Syd Burnett (Gabrielle Union), “last seen in Miami taking down a drug cartel, who has seemingly left her complicated past behind to become an LAPD detective. Paired with a new partner, Nancy McKenna (Jessica Alba), a working mom with an equally complex history, Syd is forced to confront how her unapologetic lifestyle may be masking a greater personal secret.” The series previously aired on Spectrum last year. And Fox will offer the broadcast debut of Cosmos: Possible Worlds, the third installment of the science docuseries produced by Seth MacFarlane and hosted by Neil deGrasse Tyson, which aired on National Geographic earlier this year.

At midseason, Fox will air drama series 911 and spinoff 911: Lonestar, animated series Duncanville, and reality series Hell’s Kitchen, along with new comedy series Call Me Kat, starring and executive produced by Mayim Bialik, and animated shows The Great North and Housebroken.

Fox shows that have yet to be renewed or cancelled include Prodigal Son, The Resident, Last Man Standing, Outmatched, Almost Family, and Deputy, while Empire already aired its final season.

Mother’s Day 2020: Designers and the Moms in Their Lives

This year a lot of us are separated from our moms due to COVID-19. Thanks to video applications like FaceTime, Zoom and Skype, we’re able to virtually chat with our moms, but it’s still not the same. For Mother’s Day this year, we asked designers to share a favorite memory of the mom in their life. For some it’s their mother, for others it’s a sister or mentor. Some include walking down the aisle, others include spending time with their mothers cooking dinner and for some it’s the support their mothers gave them while navigating this crazy industry.

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=the-best-horror-tv-shows-on-netflix-right-now&captions=true”]

Best Movies on Netflix by Genre:

Please note: This list pertains to U.S. Netflix subscribers. Some titles may not currently be available on international platforms. This article is frequently amended to remove shows no longer streaming on Netflix, and to include more horror TV series that are now available on the service.

Dracula

01 - DraculaJust as they did for Sherlock Holmes, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss manage to put a fresh spin on one of the most iconic characters in Western fiction in the form of a BBC-produced miniseries. Dracula may be an adaptation of the classic Bram Stoker novel, but it’s not afraid to chart its own path over the course of its three 90-minute episodes. The series thrives by exploring the rivalry between the undead Count (Claes Bang) and his nemesis Agatha Van Helsing (Dolly Wells). The end result is as silly as it is spooky, but it’s just the ticket for vampire fans fed up with the usual fare.

Read IGN’s Dracula: Season 1 review or watch Dracula on Netflix.

Black Summer

02 - Black-SummerSyfy may have canceled Z Nation in 2018, but the series lives on in a new form on Netflix. The spinoff series Black Summer is basically the anti-Walking Dead. It’s less concerned with character building and exploring the long-term course of humanity after the zombie apocalypse than it is the immediate, visceral fear of battling the undead. Sometimes style over substance is just what the zombie doctor ordered.

Read IGN’s Black Summer: Season 1 review or watch Black Summer on Netflix.

Castlevania

03 - CastlevaniaYou don’t need to be an anime fanatic to appreciate this series, which finally proves that video game adaptations can do justice to the source material. A (very) loose adaptation of Castlevania III on the NES, this series brings together three vampire-hunting heroes in a quest to rid the land of Wallachia from Dracula’s scourge. Stylish action and surprisingly deep characterization both help Castlevania soar. Whether in live-action or animation, Dracula has rarely been this sympathetic a villain.

Read IGN’s Castlevania: Season 1 review or watch Castlevania on Netflix.

Dark

04 - DarkDark may technically qualify as a science fiction series more than anything else, but it’ll definitely scratch that horror itch all the same. This dense German-language series centers on a town that sits atop a time-travel portal and the complex web of characters and conspiracies linked by that portal. The series is dark, brooding and unsettling in addition to being a real mind trip.

Read IGN’s Dark: Season 2 review or watch Dark on Netflix.

Daybreak

05 - DaybreakDaybreak serves as a recent and very welcome addition to Netflix’s horror TV lineup. It’s a zombie survival story with a considerable twist, as it’s as much a John Hughes-inspired coming of age comedy as it is a saga about surviving in the post-apocalypse. Daybreak presents a flawed by ultimately very entertaining world that prioritizes humor as much as horror.

Read IGN’s Daybreak: Season 1 review or watch Daybreak on Netflix.

Lucifer

06 - LuciferWhat if the Devil not only walked among us, but he ran a nightclub in Los Angeles and helped the LAPD solve difficult cases? That’s the premise of this series, which stars Tom Ellis as Lucifer Morningstar and Lauren German as Detective Chloe Decker. The series doesn’t show the same literary ambitions as the comic book source material, but it does put an entertaining and dark spin on the typical police procedural format. Netflix has now become the sole home of Lucifer following NBC’s cancellation of the series, and the service recently debuted the fourth season, with a fifth and potentially sixth season on the way.

Read IGN’s Lucifer: Season 4 review or watch Lucifer on Netflix.

Legacies

07 - LegaciesThe Arrowverse isn’t the only shared universe The CW has established in recent years. Legacies is a spinoff of The Originals, which itself built on the foundation of The Vampire Diaries. This series combines the sexually charged high school drama of Riverdale with a healthy dash of True Blood and X-Men. Danielle Rose Russell stars as Hope Mikaelson, a teenage vampire and the newest student at Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted. While perhaps best appreciated by fans of The Originals and The Vampire Diaries, Legacies has a lot to offer anyone in the mood for a little spooky soap opera fun.

Read IGN’s Legacies: Series premiere review or watch Legacies on Netflix.

The Haunting of Hill House

08 - Hill HouseThe Haunting of Hill House is one of the most celebrated books in the history of horror literature, and has already spawned one of the best horror movies ever made, Robert Wise’s The Haunting, back in 1963. This new adaptation comes from director Mike Flanagan (Gerald’s Game), and very loosely adapts the original tale into a generational saga of supernatural horror, as the Crain family tries to renovate the creepy estate and suffers terrible consequences. Few horror shows have ever received the level of acclaim that The Haunting of Hill House has been getting, so find out for yourself why!

Read IGN’s The Haunting of Hill House: Season 1 review or watch The Haunting of Hill House on Netflix.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/10/29/haunting-of-hill-house-all-the-hidden-ghosts-in-season-1″]

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

09 - Chilling AdventuresHot on the heels of the hit series Riverdale comes Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, another adaptation of the old, wholesome Archie comic books with a dark, modern twist. Instead of being a mild-mannered, wholesome witch who lives next door and gets into delightful mischief, this version of Sabrina (played by Kiernan Shipka) engages in twisted spells and horrifying rituals. Will she embrace her dark baptism, or will she see the light…?

Read IGN’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: Season 1 review or watch Chilling Adventures of Sabrina on Netflix.

The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell

09 - Curious-CreationsFinally… a cooking show with demon puppets. The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell is a curious creation in and of itself. McConnell stars as a version of herself, who lives in a house full of puppet creatures, created by Henson Alternative. When she’s not wrapped up in the misadventures of her mummified cat and roadkill raccoon, she’s making astounding treats modeled after ghoulish delights, like edible femurs and eerily haunted houses. The creations are nearly impossible for most people to make at home because they require an astounding amount of artistic skill, but it’s fascinating to watch McConnell work and her creepy companions are always a delight.

Watch The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell on Netflix.

American Horror Story

10 - American Horror StoryMurder House. Asylum. Coven. Freak Show. Hotel. Roanoke. Every season of the anthology American Horror Story takes place in another corner of America, with a new series of horrors, and most of them are varying degrees of great. The show has a grand guignol sensibility that’s outlandish and entertaining, but it still manages to be genuinely scary once in a while. And watching the same cast of actors play completely different roles in various different seasons gives American Horror Story a strange and fascinating continuity unlike any other horror show on television.

Read IGN’s American Horror Story: 1984 premiere review or watch American Horror Story on Netflix.

Ash vs. Evil Dead

11 - Ash Evil DeadThe adventures of Ash began in the Evil Dead cult hit horror trilogy, and for decades it seemed as though his Deadite-killing days were over. But Ash vs. Evil Dead brought back Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi in a show that continued the mythology and the wild humor that everyone loved from the original, classic films (until it was axed after Season 3, anyway). Ashy Slashy forever!

Read IGN’s Ash vs. Evil Dead: Season 1 review or watch Ash vs. Evil Dead on Netflix.

Bates Motel

12 - Bates MotelThe prequel to the classic, iconic horror movie Psycho, Bates Motel tells the story of a young Norman Bates and his weirdly manipulative mother, who we all know are eventually doomed to live a life of tragedy and murder. But getting there is a lot of creepy fun, with eerie foreshadowing, icky subtext, and admittedly some unnecessary subplots about drug trafficking.

Read IGN’s Bates Motel: Season 1 review or watch Bates Motel on Netflix.

Devilman Crybaby

13 - Devilman CrybabyMasaaki Yuasa’s update of the classic Devilman manga is one of the most twisted and violent shows around. It’s the story of a young, sensitive teenager who becomes infected with a homicidal demon that uses its powers to destroy other demons. But this isn’t a “monster of the week” series. Devilman Crybaby eventually transforms into something completely harrowing, and unlike anything else you’re likely to find on Netflix.

Watch Devilman Crybaby on Netflix.

Dexter

14 - DexterMichael C. Hall plays Dexter, a serial killer who kills other killers. So that makes him… okay? This subversive Showtime series treats homicidal mania like some kind of superpower, with a protagonist who has a secret identity he can never, ever reveal. The later seasons lose steam, but when Dexter was great, it was one of the best shows on television.

Read IGN’s Dexter: Season 1 review or watch Dexter on Netflix.

Goosebumps

15 - GoosebumpsKids like horror too! In this adaptation of the classic R.L. Stine book series, every episode tells a new story of monstrousness without ever becoming actual nightmare fuel. Whether you’re feeling nostalgic or trying to introduce your kids to the horror genre, the Goosebumps TV series is a safe, fun, but still kinda spooky treat.

Watch Goosebumps on Netflix.

iZombie

izombie-blog-1491354589951Just when you thought everything had been done with the zombie genre, and the procedural genre, here comes iZombie, a sharply written series about a medical examiner who happens to be undead. She can only survive by eating brains, and when she eats them, she can remember things about the corpse, which helps her solve one crime after another in this morbidly funny twist on some beloved television tropes.

Read IGN’s iZombie: Season 1 review or watch iZombie on Netflix.

Mindhunter

16 - MindhunterDepending on your definition of horror, Mindhunter might not technically qualify, but it’s certainly horror-adjacent. This exceptional series tells the true story of how the FBI evolved to get into the minds of serial killers, and all of the obstacles that had to be overcome to convince law enforcement officials that there were other ways of investigating and tracking murderers. It’s dark, it’s intriguing, and with several episodes each season directed by David Fincher, it fits right into the mold of Se7en and Zodiac.

Read IGN’s Mindhunter: Season 1 review or watch Mindhunter on Netflix.

Penny Dreadful

17 - Penny DreadfulAll of the gothic literary horror characters who emerged in the late 1800s were real, and lived at the same time. That’s the premise of the captivating and stylish series Penny Dreadful, which combines serious period piece drama with modern fantasy world-building. It may be a bit slow at times, but it’ll suck you right in.

Read IGN’s Penny Dreadful: Season 1 review or watch Penny Dreadful on Netflix.

Stranger Things

18 - Stranger ThingsThe pop culture phenomenon Stranger Things is a show that wears a lot of hats, sometimes evoking Spielbergian levels of nostalgia and wonder, and sometimes Stephen King-like moments of unbridled terror. It’s a blend that works well for Stranger Things, and helps it stand out amongst a sea of other 1980s-inspired movies and TV shows. If you haven’t watched it already, it’s time you started. And now the third season is now available to binge.

Supernatural

19 - SupernaturalThe impossibly long-running horror-adventure series Supernatural has two of the most likable stars in the horror TV genre, Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, who play monster-hunting brothers who travel the country fighting beasties and solving urban legends. The first five seasons are pretty spectacular, and although it couldn’t quite stay brilliant afterwards, there’s a reason it’s lasted 15 years. Give it a watch and you’ll see why.

Read IGN’s Supernatural: Season 1 review or watch Supernatural on Netflix.

The Walking Dead

20 - Walking DeadThe zombies took over the Earth. Now what? The hit zombie drama The Walking Dead just keeps going, and it still finds new ways to shock its audience, long after you’d imagine they’d run out of ideas. At its best, The Walking Dead is one of the best horror shows in TV history. At its worst, it’s still worth watching to get to the next good part.

Read IGN’s The Walking Dead: Season 1 review or watch The Walking Dead on Netflix.

Wynonna Earp

21 - Wynonna EarpThe horror TV show that’s stealthily built up a dedicated cult following, Wynonna Earp, tells the story of Wyatt Earp’s descendant, who now protects the town of Purgatory from demons alongside an immortal Doc Holliday. It’s probably the most butt-kicking supernatural action show on television. You’re going to want to see what all the fuss is about.

Watch Wynonna Earp on Netflix.

How We Pick the Best Horror TV Shows on Netflix

We’ve combed through the Netflix lineup for the most varied horror lineup we can find. The goal is to spotlight both original series like Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Castlevania and popular TV fare like Bates Motel and Supernatural. TGS 2020 Has Been Cancelled

Japan’s Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association (CESA) has confirmed the 2020 Tokyo Game Show has been cancelled as a result of the current COVID-19 crisis. The expo, which was scheduled to run from September 24-27 at Makuhari Messe, will instead be reshaped into an online event. More information about how the digital event will unfold is expected later this month.

“Due to the outbreak of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) on a global scale and the situation remains unpredictable in Japan as well, the organizer and the co-organizers have reached this decision after a long consideration to place the utmost priority on the health and safety of visitors, exhibitors and stakeholders,” CESA explained in a press release published today. “We ask for your kind understanding and cooperation.”

TGS joins a lengthy list of international expos and events that have been cancelled in the wake of the global pandemic, including E3, San Diego Comic-Con, BitSummit, GDC, Gamescom, and many others. Like TGS, the Gamescom team is building a digital replacement event to air in place of the physical expo.

IGN will also be hosting a global, digital event in June to bring you the latest news and impressions around upcoming games and the next generation of console hardware. IGN’s Summer of Gaming partners include 2K, Xbox, CD Projekt Red, Square Enix, SEGA, Bandai Namco, Amazon, Google Stadia, Twitter, Devolver Digital, THQ Nordic, and many, many more.

New Dates Revealed for 2020 Summer Olympics

The 2020 Summer Olympics officially have a new date.
The International Olympic Committee revealed on Monday that the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo will now be held from July 23 to Aug. 8, 2021. The Paralympic Games will follow on Aug. 24 to Sept. 5, 2021.
“These new dates give the health authorities and all involved in the organization of the Games the maximum time to deal with the constantly changing landscape and the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic,” the IOC said in a statement. “The new dates, exactly one year after those originally planned for 2020, also have the added benefit that any disruption that the postponement will cause to the international sports calendar can be kept to a minimum, in the interests of the athletes and the International Summer Olympic Sports Federation.”
On March 24 Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and IOC president Thomas Bach confirmed the 2020 Summer Games would be postponed.
A statement released by the International Olympic Committee read: “The leaders agreed that the Olympic Games in Tokyo could stand as a beacon of hope to the world during these troubled times and that the Olympic flame could become the light at the end of the tunnel in

Hyke RTW Fall 2020

Cars could be seen passing by through the floor-to-ceiling windows, but inside the cavernous white-and-black space where Hyke staged its fall show there were only models and photographers. Like so many events, the show was canceled to audience members due to the outbreak of the coronavirus, but it was live-streamed on the brand’s web site.
Designers Yukiko Ode and Hideaki Yoshihara continued on their path of reinventing military classics and workwear with a modern touch, but their latest offering was in many ways softer and less structured than some recent seasons. Voluminous outerwear took centerstage, with elements of trenchcoats showing up on billowing ponchos and coat dresses with extra-long sleeves. Elegant separates such as ankle-length fringed skirts and crisp, high-neck blouses were sometimes accessorized with knit pinafore-like pieces with long fringe and high funnel necks. Some stopped at the chest while others extended to the knee.
Hyke is also known for its athleticwear collaborations, having previously worked with The North Face. This season saw a series of T-shirts, jackets and sneakers by Adidas mixed in with the more high fashion items. In other nods to functionality that still fell squarely in the fashion realm, the designers played with the idea of the

Untitled Goose Game Grabs Another GOTY Prize at 2020 GDC Awards

Untitled Goose Game has picked up another coveted Game of the Year gong at the 2020 Game Developers Choice Awards. The finalists for the grand prize included Outer Wilds, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Control, and Death Stranding, but Untitled Goose Game came out on top.

“We really never, ever expected that our game would resonate with people in the way that it has,” said House House’s Michael McMaster in the studio’s recorded response. “So it’s very strange and incredibly nice to receive this award.”

Other notable success stories from the ceremony include Remedy Entertainment’s Control, which won awards for Best Audio, Best Technology, and Best Visual Art, and Disco Elysium, which won Best Narrative (plus Best Debut for Ukrainian developer ZA/UM). Death Stranding picked up the most nominations when the finalists were announced in early January (nominated in seven categories) but ultimately didn’t win any awards.

The 2020 Game Developers Choice awards were presented via a pre-recorded livestream this year following the cancellation of the March conference due to the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus. Nominations for the Game Developers Choice Awards are finalised by the International Choice Awards Network, which is described as an “invitation-only group comprised of leading game creators from all parts of the video game industry.” Developers may not nominate a game that they are personally involved with.

Untitled Goose Game previously won big at this year’s 23rd annual D.I.C.E. Awards where it was the surprise winner of Game of the Year and also bolted away the awards for Outstanding Achievement for an Independent Game and Outstanding Achievement in Character.

IGN’s review called Untitled Goose Game a brief but endlessly charming adventure that had us honking the whole way through, so it’s definitely worth a gander.

Rosie Assoulin RTW Fall 2020

Coming off of her first official pre-fall season, Rosie Assoulin proposed fall as a response to the call of the prior collection. Where pre-fall’s strength was its lightness, fall’s was its focus on the colder season. The designer added modern twists to classics with heavy weighted plaid wools; for instance, enveloping opera coats and blanket-y ponchos or a coated cotton and tartan coat dress and high-waisted and belted trousers. Assoulin juxtaposed this tension with a variety of dramatic silk gazar, double duchess satin and silk file evening gowns; 3-D appliqué daisies, raw scalloped edges and a vibrant palette added the fashion whimsy the designer is known for.
WWD Critique: Rosie Assoulin offered divine tension within voluminous, couture-inspired shapes through heavy weighted wool outerwear and energetic eveningwear offerings for fall.

The NBA's esports league postpones 2020 season due to coronavirus

The NBA's esports league postpones 2020 season due to coronavirusJust a day after two NBA players tested positive for COVID-19 and the league announced it would suspend activities for at least thirty days, its esports arm followed suit. The NBA 2K League will postpone the start of its season, which was planned for March 24th. Of course, unlike the real game, esports can be played online and the league said in a statement that "in the coming weeks" it will hold preseason competitions remotely.

According to NBA 2K League Managing Director Brendan Donohue, "We will continue to evaluate the situation and do everything possible to bring the excitement of the NBA 2K League to our fans through remote preseason exhibitions and other content. We look forward to sharing additional information about these exhibitions and the start of the 2020 season as it becomes available."

Microsoft's Build conference will be a 'digital' online-only event for 2020

Microsoft's Build conference will be a 'digital' online-only event for 2020Microsoft's big event for developers in Seattle is traditionally where it shows off a lot of things that also impact us as consumers using Windows, Office or its other products, but this year it will be an exclusively virtual one. The company revealed in a statement to The Verge that "…we will deliver our annual Microsoft Build event for developers as a digital event, in lieu of an in-person event. We look forward to bringing together our ecosystem of developers in this new virtual format to learn, connect and code together."

Yesterday, Washington governor Jay Inslee announced a ban on events with more than 250 people that will run at least until the end of March. While that's set to expire before the Build event in May, Microsoft is acting now to prepare people for a "virtual format" instead of waiting any longer to see if it's extended. Facebook F8 and Google I/O were scheduled to take place earlier in May, and both have already canceled any in-person component of those developer events.

Last year Microsoft showed off the new Linux kernel for Windows 10 and Minecraft AR, and this year we expect to hear a lot more about its support for developers creating apps to run on Windows 10x and dual-screen devices like the Surface Neo.

CinemaCon 2020 Canceled Due to Coronavirus Concerns

CinemaCon, the film industry’s largest trade show gathering of theater owners from around the world, has been canceled due to concerns over the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, organizers announced Wednesday.

The event, which was to have taken place from March 30-April 2, 2020 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, would have seen the major studios touting their upcoming films to exhibitors along with appearances by a bevy of stars there to promote their next films.

“It is with great regret we are announcing the cancellation of CinemaCon 2020,” National Association of Theatre Owners president John Fithian and CinemaCon organizer Mitch Neuhauser said in a statement.

“Each spring, motion picture exhibitors, distributors and industry partners from around the world meet in Las Vegas to share information and celebrate the moviegoing experience. This year, due to the travel ban from the European Union, the unique travel difficulties in many other areas of the world and other challenges presented by the coronavirus pandemic, a significant portion of the worldwide motion picture community is not able to attend CinemaCon.”

CinemaCon‘s cancellation is the latest major entertainment industry event to be nixed in the wake of the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak. Earlier today came the official news that E3 had been canceled. Previously, the SXSW festival was canceled and Coachella was postponed.

The NBA also postponed the remainder of the current season due to Utah Jazz player Rudy Gobert testing positive for the virus.

Hollywood’s reaction to the COVID-19 virus has varied from the major studios largely staying the course on their big upcoming releases to films such as No Time to Die and Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway having their release dates postponed just weeks from when they were slated to be released.

The global film industry has been roiled by the spreading viral outbreak, with Italy under quarantine and cinemas across China closed indefinitely.
