Dissecting the Rise and Fall — and Rise Again — of Ivy League Style

NEW YORK — It’s not often these days that you see a room full of men wearing Harris tweed blazers, button-down oxfords, repp ties and gray flannel slacks. But that was the audience that turned out to hear a panel of men’s wear veterans discuss “American Style: Ivy, Trad and Prep Into the 21st Century.”
In addition to the traditionalists, the event at Town Stages in TriBeCa hosted by shirtmaker Thomas Mason and Simon Crompton of the Ivy League-skewed web site Permanent Style, also drew a group of young guys in modern interpretations of classic styles. Think Rowing Blazers and Vineyard Vines with Todd Snyder cords and Chelsea boots.
Custom tailor and author Alan Flusser set the stage by discussing the history of Ivy style. It was first evident in the Twenties with the WASP students at Ivy League colleges such as Yale — and to a lesser degree Princeton and Harvard — seeking more-casual alternatives to the tailored dress code that was prevalent at the time, he said. “Brooks Brothers created the template,” he added, and these young men stocked up on the brand’s oxford button-downs, Shetland sweaters, polo coats and argyle socks. “There was a new sensibility about dressing. It was

Trump: ‘Making America Hate Again!’

Trump’s official campaign slogan is “Make America Great Again!” Perhaps he should change it to the headline above.

The Huffington Post has made an editorial decision to put Trump articles in the Entertainment section instead of the political section. This seemed like a good idea at the time.

Admittedly he is the class clown — and the schoolyard bully. Oddly, also the teacher’s pet. But his toxic mix of egotism, cynicism and racism simply isn’t entertaining. It is, however, still a spectacle.

His now infamous tirade about Mexicans being criminals and rapists is well-known.

Recently two cowardly young thugs in Boston allegedly urinated on and used a metal pole to beat a 58-year-old sleeping Hispanic homeless man, fracturing his nose and causing other serious injuries. One of them reportedly told the police “Donald Trump was right, all of these illegals need to be deported.” (Apparently, the two assailants checked his immigration status before brutalizing him.) A news person asked Trump for his reaction, and Trump reportedly said “That would be a shame” adding this remarkable statement, “I will say, the people that are following me are very passionate. They love this country. They want this country to be great again. But they are very passionate. I will say that.”

His supporters chanted “USA! USA! USA!” when some protesters were thrown out of a Trump event in Phoenix — as if they were cheering at Wrestlemania.

This week at a press conference in Iowa, several times Trump ordered Univision anchorman Jorge Ramos, a respected journalist and an American citizen, to “Sit down,” as if Ramos were a dog being ordered by his unkind master to “Sit.” Trump also added to “Go back to Univision.” Then Trump nodded at one of his security guards who escorted Ramos out of the room.

In the hallway, a Trump supporter further humiliated Ramos telling him “Get out of my country.” Ramos responded with restraint, class, and dignity.

The delusional Donald has often claims that he will win the “Hispanic” vote. This assertion might be just another Trump empty promise. A recent Gallop Poll shows among Hispanic voters, he has the highest disapproval rate (65 percent) of any GOP candidate.

Apparently he is looking to carry Asian vote as well. Here’s Trump mocking them and doing a racially stereotypical impersonation of “these people”:

While Trump may not carry Latinos or Asians, he will likely carry the racists’ vote. It isn’t surprising that Trump is receiving endorsements from white supremacy groups and neo-Nazis. David Duke, former grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, has reportedly called Trump the best of the GOP candidates.

In an interview with Bloomberg’s Mark Halperin and John Heilemann, Trump reportedly said “I don’t need his endorsement; I certainly wouldn’t want his endorsement” and added “I don’t need anyone’s endorsement.” When asked if he would repudiate the endorsement, Trump is quoted as saying “Sure, I would if that would make you feel better.”

That doesn’t make me feel any better.

Ex Machina Again?: Hour of the Wolf Movie Review of The Machine

2015-08-23-1440362178-3165223-The_Machine_410.jpgThe Machine, Dan? The Machine? Surely you must mean Ex Machina, the dark, sensual drama about a young programmer falling into the thrall of an eerily human-like android, the film that grabbed so much attention earlier this year. That’s the film you’re talking about, right?”

No, no I’m actually talking about The Machine, another film entirely. But in an curious way, I’m talking about Ex Machina as well, because it turns out there are some interesting parallels between the two films, in sufficient quantity that I think it’s well-worth discussion. The Fixer: How to Make an Old Coat Seem New Again

Ask 10 fashion editors what’s truly worth investing in for fall and at least half will say it’s a gorgeous coat. Outerwear is visible all season, instantly outfit-making, and remarkably practical. But what if you drained your savings on a brand-new one last year, only to find that it’s feeling tired for fall 2015? Enter: The Fixer. I’m here to make that baby feel brand-new again.

fix-your-coat-holding-image

What you should do: Find a tailor you can trust (true story: I’ve baked brownies for mine on occasion so he’ll give my projects a little extra attention). Bring him photos you’ve swiped from street-style blogs, Pinterest, and magazines, of what you’d like your new coat to look like, keeping these ideas in mind for inspiration:

1. Recut, rework, reimagine: A long duster coat no longer your speed? Have anywhere from a few inches to a few feet hacked off to create a swingy little jacket. Still not feeling it? Remove the sleeves for a cool vest you’ll layer with everything this season.

2. Add some pizzazz: Statement outerwear is having a major moment (witness: every runway from Alexander Wang to Zero+ Maria Cornejo)—a classic peacoat just isn’t going to cut it this season. Solution? Embellishments in every form. Buy a couple of yards of bold-color leather or a cool metallic tweed and have it layered on top of your boring wool lapels. Add a bit of silk or suede fringe to the under-sleeves and at the hemline. Scour local thrift shops or Etsy for unique replacement buttons—all of these are easy-to-make-but-totally-impactful swaps.

3. Fake it, DIY style. If these projects sound too intimidating, expensive, or time-consuming, take matters into your own hands. A cool new belt can work wonders (and magically make you look like you’ve lost five pounds). A removable faux-fur collar can be tied on top to look like it’s part of the coat itself, and a bold set of gloves, a hat, or a scarf can make snoozy outerwear feel alive again!

Have a harrowing style dilemma? It’s no match for The Fixer, always on call: Tweet your dilemma to @glamour_fashion with the hashtag #thefixer.

Harry Styles Falls Again Because It’s The Story Of His Life

Reuniting his butt with the floor once again, Harry Styles took another tumble at a concert in Toronto on Thursday.

It’s just the latest chapter in Style’s epic battle against gravity, which seems to have been going on for a while now:

Recently, during a time we assume he wasn’t falling to the seat of his pants, Styles and One Direction released the video for their new single. It’s called “Drag Me Down.”

Yeah, “Drag Me Down.” Has there ever been a more appropriate song title in the history of music?

Love Is Blind. Until You See Your Ex Again!

2015-07-01-1435779013-8857339-Marina.png
Art world celebrity/performance artist Marina Abramovic (who by the way is now art directing for Givenchy) indirectly provided this subliminal setting to a music video you’re about to witness — if not already — from her “The Art Is Present” show in 2010 at the MoMA. Back then, her live art performance consisted of spending one minute of silence, sitting just across from a complete stranger, with the goal of triggering whatever emotions each subject, including herself, would bring. Several strangers took part, but it’s her response to one in particular that you’re about to hold back tears or reach for the tissue paper.

2015-07-01-1435772395-9037067-HowIBecameTheBomb.jpg

Fast-forward or should I say, refresh to today, against the backdrop of music by Nashville musicians How I Became The Bomb, who capture on their song, “Ulay, Oh” the emotional story of former lovers Marina Abramovic and a surprise stranger — in this case her ex Ulay’s — first encounter after the two separated more than 30 years ago. You’ll know which stranger he is just by the emotional outpour from Marina, but watch closely at the 1:30 minute mark.

News Flash: love is still our strongest emotion! Currently racking up over 19 million youtube views, and that’s only within one month, this video is indeed touching. But it shouldn’t be surprising, even though some won’t get it. Those who do, the majority of us who’ve been loved, loved someone, been in love or just are longing, know that these emotions aren’t necessarily just reserved for romantic relationships either. In fact, Ulay in this case, could’ve well been a runaway child now found, a once absent biological father, the list goes on. As a result, the song took off totally organically and reached Billboard’s Top 100 (#58) last week. Like many videos out there, nothing was manipulated to make this go viral. Uploaded last October and just sitting there waiting for people to find it, the song was created by the band after the lead singer and main composer, Jon Burr accidentally wandered into MoMA during “The Artist Is Present” and saw the footage later, wrote the song, then contacted Marina for permission to use the footage for the band’s video.

Could it soon be the anti-“Gangnam Style” viral video of the summer? Most don’t bring this level of catharsis to viewers, unless of course we’re talking about practice, or it comes to those skillful cats. Who knows, maybe it boils down to ‘Love vs Cats’! Then again, there could always be another dress gone viral that causes us all to go blind.

Giant Penis Sprays Confetti To Promote Safe Sex … Come Again?

When a man in a giant penis costume ejaculates confetti on people, you pay attention.

But are you thinking about practicing safe sex?

That’s the dilemma facing a wacky PSA in Norway to combat the increase in STDs there. “Penis can surprise you,” says the tagline in Norwegian.

The PSA was produced by the Swedish Association for Sexuality Education (RFSU).

penis

A spokesperson for the Involve! agency behind the spot told the Mirror the commercial is intended to highlight the fun and naughtiness of sex, though admittedly many over 30 “thought the campaign was pointless and some went so far as to brand it banal and idiotic.”

Silly as it is, the video aims its use-a-condom message at 16- to 25-year-olds, the Telegraph reported. “This is a group that is not swayed by lecturing, facts or scaremongering, RFSU’s Christina Placht said.

The guy wearing the getup, 19-year-old student Philip van Eck, reportedly told a Norwegian outlet that he’s happy to do his part: “I thought it was hilarious. If I can help others, just by being a dick, there is nothing better.”

Victoria Beckham Reveals the Spice Girl Outfit She’s Never Wearing Again

There’s no denying that today’s Victoria Beckham is one very, very stylish lady. But the VB of days gone by? Not necessarily. When the designer was known as the Spice Girls‘ Posh, she had plenty of outfits she’d likely cringe at now, including one that she won’t be bringing in as design inspiration any time soon.

victoria-beckham-cfdas-2015

“I’m not sure that any of my particular looks from the ’90s will be inspiring. They will probably be horrifying [to] most of my team,” she told WWD. “I wouldn’t say my PVC catsuits would be reappearing, put it that way.”

There won’t be any reason to figure out what reformed Posh would wear today either, as Beckham squashes the forever-ongoing rumors of a reunion (sad!).

“I really support [them] in everything they do, and they’re so supportive of what I’m doing, but I couldn’t possibly do that,” she said of getting the band back together. “It was great when we did the Olympics, but I won’t be doing that anymore.”

The proud mum also explained that for son Brooklyn, a burgeoning model, it’s about being so much more than a pretty face. “He’s just finished his GCSEs [U.K. high school exams], and so he’s done a couple of shoots. He loves photography and art, so for him when he does the occasional shoot, it’s more than just him having his picture taken.”

Michelle Obama’s U.K. Tour Outfits Will Make You Fall in Love With Her Style All Over Again

Last week Michelle Obama, with daughters Malia and Sasha and mother Marian Robinson, set off on a goodwill cultural tour of England and Italy. On the six-day trip, which the First Lady used to promote the Let Girls Learn and Let’s Move initiatives, Obama wore European and American designers, reminding us of why we can’t get enough of her personal style. It was like 2008 all over again, when Obama first hit the scene and major fashion crushes ensued.

For the first stop on her global tour the First Lady arrived at Stanstead airport, wearing a yellow-and-blue lace Preen by Thornton Bregazzi dress. You can find a similar style on sale at avenue32.com for $ 960.

During the visit to London, Obama met with students and educators at the Mulberry School for Girls to discuss how the two countries are working together to enable access to education for young girls around the world. Her multicolor Mary Kantrantzou dress popped against the girls’ uniforms.

Obama wore U.K. designer Christopher Kane for a visit to 10 Downing Street. She teamed the black and floral embroidered dress with black Jimmy Choo kitten heels.

After her time in the U.K., Obama and family jetted off to Milan, where she discussed her Let’s Move initiative. She arrived in a fit-and-flare custom Duro Oluwu dress, with Sasha in a seersucker American Apparel dress, and Malia in heather gray.

On her second day in Milan, Obama wore a Missoni knit dress as she toured the U.S. Pavilion at the Milan Expo. “It was a beautiful surprise,” Angela Missoni told WWD upon learning the FLOTUS chose the striped dress for the trip. “It’s a beautiful thing; it’s the first time she has been photographed wearing a dress from an Italian brand,” added Missoni.

After receiving some flak for wearing only European designers on her tour, Obama chose a red shirtdress by American designer Michael Kors. The patriotic look, paired with simple black flats, was perfect for the baby shower Obama threw for moms-to-be who were stationed at the U.S. and NATO military base in Venice.

Later, Obama toured Venice, visiting the U.S. Pavillon of the Venice Biennale venue, wearing a V-neck sleeveless floral-print dress. She teamed the bold number with black gladiator sandals.

On the last day of the trip, Obama went with a kimono-sleeve dress and metallic sandals. Malia and Sasha chose wide-strap shift dresses, dainty necklaces, and simple flats.

Paralyzed Ex-Football Player Chris Norton Walked Again, Graduated And Got Engaged. How Was Your Weekend?

Chris Norton, a former college football player who broke his neck during a game in 2010, said he was given a 3 percent chance of ever regaining movement below his neck.

Over a life-changing weekend, he beat the odds and then some.

On Saturday, he got engaged.

Then on Sunday, Norton walked across the stage at his graduation from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, accomplishing a goal he had set over a year ago. Assisted by his fiancee, Emily Summers, Norton rose from his wheelchair and took steps in front a cheering crowd to receive his diploma in business management, KCCI reported.

It was like my gameday,” Norton, 23, told The Des Moines Register. “I was in the zone, focusing on what I needed to do and not worrying about anyone or anything else.”

According to NBC, Norton has gradually regained movement while in therapy. He’s also launched a foundation called SCI CAN to help finance high-priced equipment for people recovering from spinal injuries. In part to provide inspiration for spinal cord injury patients, he publicly declared he would walk at his ceremony. He completed school a semester early to train for the big moment, the network reported.

When “gameday” arrived, Norton was ready. “So many people, including myself, fear failure, it’s human,” he said to the network. “But if you do everything in your power to accomplish your dreams, at the end of the day, you can be proud and happy with how far you’ve come.”

Getting a life partner and overcoming the odds on graduation day added up to 48 memorable hours. But Norton says we ain’t seen nothing yet.

This is just one chapter of my life that just got closed,” he said in his YouTube graduation video. “And there’s still so many things I can accomplish.”

Romeo and Juliet, Together Again, Thanks to San Francisco Ballet

I couldn’t wait to see San Francisco Ballet‘s latest offering of Romeo and Juliet. As with most companies, SF Ballet artistic director Helgi Tomasson alternates the casting of the principal parts among several dancers, and I was looking forward to seeing Maria Kochetkova and Davit Karapetyan in the leads, as well as the incomparable Pascal Molat in the demanding role of Mercutio. But this is such a fine, deep company — at the first intermission, talking with my friend Jay Gilman, I said, “I would gladly come back to see the other casts.”

Jay said, “I would gladly come back to see this cast.”

When a company’s principal dancers and soloists are this excellent, your choice of casts often comes down to those whose acting ability or personal style/charisma grabs you. My all-time favorite Romeo will have to be Yuri Possokhov, now the company’s choreographer in residence. Trained in Moscow and a member of the Bolshoi and Royal Danish Ballets before he came to San Francisco, he had magnificent dancing and acting skills, plus, frankly, major sex appeal. (Please don’t think me shallow; I mean — Romeo.) When I saw him dance his last Romeo, in tears at the end, I looked over at my friend, Ivory, who burst out, “Does he know I’m single?!” To tell the truth, I can’t remember who danced Juliet that evening.

This year, tiny, doll-faced Kochetkova, who is a wonderfully proficient ballerina, danced Juliet so girlishly at first, more Clara in Nutcracker, I wondered how she would handle the transition to sudden love and lust for Romeo. She did, of course, starting with her frank interest in the masked Romeo at her father’s ball. By the time she and the handsome Karapetyan performed their gorgeous pas de deux, with all those airy, sensual lifts, in the balcony scene, it was sexual awakening before your very eyes, so to speak. Meantime, you knew the tall and manly Karapetyan, an older ladies man of a Romeo from his flirting with another in the first act, had fallen in love with Juliet’s lovely, innocent charm.

With its sex and violence, Romeo and Juliet is truly a classic ballet crowd pleaser, at least when done right. To break your heart, it really needs dancers who are adept at physical acting, too — dancers who can go beyond the surface of the story’s emotions and embody a notion of the characters. You want to feel their lust and love, anger and heartbreak, bone-deep pain over separation and (what seems, then is) death.

Similarly, all that swordplay between Montagues and Capulets — particularly between the Capulet hothead Tybalt and Romeo’s beloved friend Mercutio, followed by Romeo himself — should have the audience tense. So thank goodness Tomasson, who choreographed this version of R&J, enlisted actor, teacher, and fight expert Martino Pistone to help develop the “fight-scene choreography” and, each time SF Ballet performs this ballet, to train the male dancers in handling those weapons. Set in the Italian Renaissance — hence all those gorgeous velvets and brocades, flowing sleeves and intricate soft caps — this production uses weapons of the period: rapiers (long swords with double-edged blades) and daggers. Each cast’s Romeo, Tybalt and Mercutio practice together, of course; and if there’s a last-minute cast change, Tomasson says it’s nerve-inducing because each duo’s timing is a bit different.

While ballet versions of Shakespeare’s inimitable 1597 play have existed since the late 1700s, most productions now are set to the full-length score composed by Sergey Prokofiev in 1935, which certainly encourages an audience’s swooning and fear. At the same time, the musical passage during Mercutio’s death scene causes it to go on far too long. Though Molat perfectly expressed in movement and mime everything from braggadocio, to careless-seeming flirting, to faltering life, you can never feel the emotions you should when among them is a trace of impatience.

Even Romeo’s anguish at finding Juliet “dead” was overacted and overlong, which kept me from crying my usual buckets of tears. (Only Paris, the wealthy suitor whom Juliet’s parents were forcing her to marry, was dispatched quickly, there in the tomb.) But then Juliet awoke and discovered her Romeo, got up the nerve to stab herself, and crept over to die beside him. When, not yet quite dead, he weakly lifted and dropped his arm over her, my evening was complete.

While this is the last program of the season (and let’s hope SF Ballet brings this beautiful tale of woe back again soon), the company will be performing four short ballets in the city’s Stern Grove Festival, for free, this summer.

May 9, matinees May 9 and 10: San Francisco Ballet, War Memorial Opera House, 301 Van Ness Ave., S.F.; July 26: short ballets, Stern Grove, 415.865.2000.

Warning: Try This and You May Never Go to Bed Angry Again

“What are three things you appreciate about me?” my partner cheekily whispered to me.

“Why you little…!”

I couldn’t believe it.

My partner and I had been engaged in a rare but nevertheless very heated argument that evening, which we hadn’t managed to resolve prior to retiring to bed.

Now I was lying there, absolutely steaming with my back turned to him, and he had the nerve to try to pull our regular bedtime gratitude routine? Ugh, what nerve!

For those who read my previous post, you know I’ve been on my own personal gratitude journey for some time now. I’ve experimented with all sorts of different gratitude practices over the years, and upon reading an article warning against the relationship dangers of taking one’s partner for granted, I decided to implement a nightly ritual with my own partner, declaring three things that we appreciated about each other each day.

We’d been engaging in the practice for months and found it a wonderful way to connect as well as calm and refocus our minds on positive thoughts before drifting off to sleep.

But now, in this moment when I was steeped in anger directed squarely at my partner, feeling gratitude towards him was the furthest thing from my mind.

When he posed that cheeky question to me though, it abruptly stopped me in my mental tracks.

Previously my mind had been spinning with thoughts of “How could he this” and “How dare he that,” while I stewed away in my state of anger. Suddenly, through his question, he caused my mind to shift gears and broaden my focus away from my narrow self-pity to consider the bigger picture.

And oh boy did I feel the internal conflict. Part of me clenched ever more tightly to that self-righteous feeling of “I’ve been wronged.” But there was also an almost instinctive reaction from the gratitude habit I’d created to scan my memory of the day for all the positive interactions we’d had: the long hug we’d had before I left for work in the morning, the hot chocolate he’d made for me… that even when we didn’t see eye-to-eye he still stayed by my side.

Guess which reaction won out?

In that moment I discovered that I wasn’t able to simultaneously hold onto my anger and feel gratitude toward my partner. It was almost as though his cheekiness in asking what I appreciated about him flipped a switch in my mind that sent me down a different track.

Things weren’t all rosy and perfect immediately after that of course, but my mind calmed down significantly and we were able to return to civil discourse. I (admittedly a bit reluctantly) shared what I appreciated about him and felt validated when he did the same for me. So much easier to fall asleep after that.

MOVIE TIME: IWC Schaffhausen and the Tribeca Film Festival are going for the complete hat trick. For the third year, the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer has signed on as the official “festival-time” partner of the New York-based film festival, which runs from April 15 to 26. To mark the partnership, IWC has created a one-of-a-kind timepiece, called the Portofino Monopusher Edition “Tribeca Film Festival 2015.” The watch features a white gold case set against a slate-colored dial, with bordeaux colored subdials inspired by Hollywood’s red carpet. Thought You Were Too Old for Mary Jane Flats? Think Again

Here at Glamour, we often find ourselves discussing what a pair of shoes needs to make it really stand out. Maybe it’s a bit of hardware, a specific color, or something as simple as the shape of the toe. When it comes to the Mary Jane, this week’s choice for #flatsfriday, I think it’s a combination of all three.

vanessa-jackman-mary-jane

Now, I recognize that they may remind you of your childhood (complete with frilly, white ankle socks), but today’s Mary Jane flats are so far from the ones you wore as a tot. With a slimmer shape, daintier (and possibly, multiple) straps, and a shortened toe box, they remind us more of elegant ballet slippers. The exposed skin makes for quite the sultry look! Don’t believe me? Flip through the 15 pairs I found and try them out for yourself.

Melissa McCarthy And Paul Feig Are At It Again In The First ‘Spy’ Trailer

Melissa McCarthy and Paul Feig are shaping up to become the decade’s most coveted comedy duo. He directed her to an Oscar nomination for “Bridesmaids,” in 2011, and then again opposite Sandra Bullock in 2013’s “The Heat.” In May, McCarthy will topline the first movie Feig has written since 2003’s “I Am David.”

Called “Spy,” McCarthy plays an uncelebrated CIA analyst who volunteers to go undercover to find a deadly arms dealer, and she’s surrounded by an ensemble that includes Rose Byrne, Jude Law, Jason Statham, Allison Janney, Bobby Cannavale and 50 Cent. “Spy” hits theaters May 22, within the same month as other highly anticipated big-screen comedies: “Pitch Perfect 2,” Cameron Crowe’s still-untitled rom-com, and Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara’s police office/prisoner buddy romp.

Bill Maher Slams Islam Again In Wake Of Charlie Hebdo Attacks

On the Season 13 premiere of “Real Time with Bill Maher” on Friday night, the host continued to slam Islam following his comments earlier in the week on “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” Maher spoke out against “hundreds of millions” of Muslims on Wednesday night on “Kimmel” for supposedly supporting the Jan. 7 terrorist attack on French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, which resulted in the death of 12 people.

Maher revisited the topic on his own show on Friday in a discussion with bestselling author Salman Rushdie, former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina and CNN commentator Paul Begala. “We tend to forget how often it happens, and we’re Americans so we don’t want to single out people,” Maher said before listing terrorist attacks that have occurred across the globe since 9/11. “What we’ve said all along, and have been called bigots for it, is when there’s this many bad apples, there’s something wrong with the orchard.”

Maher then referenced the heated debate between Ben Affleck, author Sam Harris and himself back in October. During the discussion, Harris said that the religion is a “mother lode of bad ideas.” “But it is,” Maher agreed on Friday night. “And, unfortunately, the terrorists and the mainstream share a lot of these bad ideas.”

YouTuber Jillian Haker took her 2014-long feud with her brother to the next level: making a video compilation and sharing it with the Internet! What her brother believed were single moments of brother-sister selfies were actually video clips of him standing there looking awkward. Over and over and over again.

Brother, oppressed siblings everywhere are waiting for your retaliation video. Don’t let us down.

Hillary Clinton Named Most Admired Woman… Again

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was again named the most admired woman in the world in an annual Gallup poll released Monday.

Clinton has taken the title 17 of the last 18 years. In 2001, then-first lady Laura Bush took the title.

President Barack Obama took the title of most admired man again this year, topping the list for the seventh consecutive year.

list

The poll consists of an open-ended question, and the results heavily depend on name recognition.

Others who are featured on the list include Oprah Winfrey, activist Malala Yousafzai, Pope Francis and former President George W. Bush.

Happy Days Are Near Again

When stuck for inspiration, songwriters often start to draw up lists. A list can be devoted to any topic that will generate rhymes. If, for instance, the character you’re writing for is the Lord High Executioner of Titipu, you can describe a whole bunch of people to the audience whose presence (should it ever become necessary) would definitely not be missed.

Sometimes a simple device like a calendar can provide inspiration for a musical number. “The Lusty Month of May” (from Lerner & Loewe’s 1960 musical, Camelot) may not be the greatest song ever written for a Broadway musical, but it serves its purpose in moving the show’s plot forward. With an expansive musical arrangement and Sierra Boggess as Guinevere, it can easily delight a BBC Proms audience.

Oscar Hammerstein II used the months of the year for the lead-in to one of the biggest production numbers in 1945’s Carousel. His lyric reads as follows:

“March went out like a lion
A’whippin’ up the water in the bay.
Then April cried and stepped aside,
And along come pretty little May!
May was full of promises
But she didn’t keep ’em quick enough for some
And a crowd of doubtin’ Thomases
Was predictin’ that the summer’d never come.
But it’s comin’ by gum,
You can feel it come,
You can feel it in your heart
You can see it in the ground
You can see it in the trees
You can smell it in the breeze
Look around! Look around! Look around!”

June may have been bustin’ out all over, but August of 2014 was a real bitch. From volcanic eruptions to videotaped beheadings, from the heavily militarized police force in Ferguson, Missouri to the social media’s collective angst over the fact that President Obama wore a tan suit to a press conference, August of 2014 was a month that put shark week to shame.

And yet hope springs eternal. Like Tom Wingfield (the male protagonist created by Tennessee Williams for The Glass Menagerie who often went to the movies to escape the suffocating cruelties of his family’s hopeless existence), I always look to the movies and live theatre to renew my sense of optimism. And what better place to start than with Jerome Kern and Buddy DeSylva’s “Look For The Silver Lining” (sung here by Alexander Gray and Marilyn Miller in 1929’s film adaptation of Sally).

For people like Serial Mom’s Beverly Sutphin, Labor Day may mean that white shoes are no longer in season. But for me, it’s the start of the theatre season and a brand new supply of hope. Bottom line? Nothing ventured, nothing gained!

* * * * * * * * * *

The first two experiences of my 2014-215 season completely charmed and disarmed me, bringing a smile to my face and hope to my heart. First up at bat was a two-hour animated feature by Hiroyuki Okiura with an absolutely delightful musical score by Mina Kubota.

With all the unnecessary brutality in today’s world, A Letter To Momo provides a breath of fresh air by introducing audiences to three yokai (mischievous goblins) who have been sent down to earth on a very specific mission. They may be the silliest creatures to arrive on screen since Wipoc (Jim Carrey) and Zeebo (Daman Wayans) landed in the San Fernando Valley in 1988’s Earth Girls Are Easy.

2014-10-20-momoposter.jpg

Poster art for A Letter To Momo

Okiura’s three yokai had been locked in a book of drawings stashed away in an attic until Momo Miyaura (an 11-year-old girl who traveled with her recently widowed mother from Tokyo to the remote island of Shio) temporarily freed them. Only Momo can see the impish spirit creatures who waste no time stealing fruit and vegetables from local fields and creating chaos wherever they go.

  • Iwa, the purported leader of the pack, may look like a fearsome ogre, but he’s harmless, clumsy, and quite adorable.
  • Kawa is a greenish creature with a frog-like face who is vain, lazy, hates eating fish (because they have so many scales) and is more than a little bit ridiculous.
  • Mame is the smallest of the three, with a long tongue that could make Jim Carrey’s Wipoc jealous, a childlike sense of wonder, and a very weak memory.

A scene from A Letter To Momo

While the three spirit creatures are trying to help Momo’s deceased father pass over to the other side, in their clumsiness they have allowed the young girl to take possession of their travel passport to “the above.” Depressed at having to leave her comfortable life in Tokyo, Momo is also wrestling with the guilt from having had an argument with her father (over tickets to a performance by the Vienna Boys’ Choir) on the day before he died. Even as her mother, Ikuko, tries to encourage Momo to make friends with Yota and Umi, Momo can’t begin to tell her new acquaintances what she keeps seeing when no one else is looking.

Momo and Mame are at a loss for words in A Letter To Momo.

The film’s ravishing handmade animation is breathtaking from start to finish, with just the right amount of silliness to make A Letter To Momo appealing to children of all ages. Here’s the trailer:

* * * * * * * * * *

As I headed out to Walnut Creek to attend the opening night of Center Rep’s 2014-2015 season, the last thing I expected was to fall in love with a new jukebox musical. But, in the spirit of giving credit where credit is due, let’s just say that I came, I saw, and I was conquered (near Concord!).

Jukebox musicals are a peculiar genre that test one’s loyalty to certain singers, songwriters, and singer/songwriters from the past. With shows like Beatlemania or Motown: The Musical, the evening turns into a spectacle buoyed by the music (although the urgency with which the show is paced often involves getting as many familiar numbers onstage as possible).

Jukebox musicals like Jersey Boys and Beautiful: The Carole King Musical are dedicated to particular talents and songs of their time. What keeps these shows afloat is not just the lucrative pull of nostalgia (and their solid production values), but the fact that their books are strong enough to make the audience care about the characters onstage. Despite its shrewd use of ABBA’s impressive catalog of hit songs, Mamma Mia! can be a pretty vapid bore.

Lest anyone forget, the term “jukebox musical” also refers to music which gained its popularity from being played on jukeboxes in diners and coffee shops around America. While I might like to think of shows like 1968’s George M!, 1972’s Oh, Coward! and 1976’s Side By Side By Sondheim as “pre-jukebox” musicals, the truth is that the songs featured in those shows never gained popularity by people tossing quarters into jukeboxes.

Written and directed by Roger Bean (who created The Marvelous Wonderettes and Winter Wonderettes), Life Could Be A Dream is a loving half-tribute, half-spoof that takes the best of both approaches and adds a curious twist. Not only does the show include 23 hits from the doo-wop era (ranging from “Sh-Boom,” “Get A Job,” and “Fools Fall In Love” to “Duke of Earl,” “Lonely Teardrops,” and “Rama Lama Ding Dong”), many have received glorious new musical arrangements by Roger Bean, Jon Newton, and Steve Parsons that can make audiences listen to these old standards from a decidedly fresh perspective.

The plot is simple enough. Denny Varney (Ryan Drummond) is an aspiring musician who is still living in his mother’s basement five years after graduating from Springfield High School. Together with his close but extremely nerdy friend, Eugene Johnson (Tim Homsley), he hopes to enter the “Dream of a Lifetime” talent search being promoted by radio station WOPR (“The Big Whopper”).

While Denny and Eugene are completely lacking in social skills and the kind of personal connections which might help them go places, their friend Wally Patton (Jerry Lee) most definitely is not. A checker at Piggly Wiggly whose father is a local preacher, Wally is an active force in the local church who knows everyone in town (including the contest’s producer),

After being allowed to join Denny’s group (instantly expanding it from a duo to a trio), Wally sets up an audition for “Big Earl” Franklin, the owner of Big Stuff Auto who is looking for a new musical group that can promote his business. Instead of “Big Earl,” the boys meet Skip Henderson (Derek Keeling), the shop’s head mechanic who is a slightly pudgy Elvis look-alike. Tension quickly starts to mount.

  • Not only does Skip have eyes for the boss’s daughter, Lois (Sharon Rietkerk), he’s well aware that one wrong move could cause him to lose his job (which he desperately needs).
  • Although it’s obvious that adding Skip to Denny and the Dreamers would bring in “Big Earl’s” sponsorship, Denny wants to be the lead singer and has no desire to cede the spotlight to Skip.
  • Meanwhile, Eugene has never gotten over the fact that Lois broke his heart when they were in third grade.

With choreography by Lee Martino and music direction by Brandon Adams, Life Could Be A Dream turned out to be a joyous evening in the theatre that benefitted from Michael Carnahan’s unit set and Bobby Pearce’s costume designs. Ryan Drummond continues to entertain Bay area audiences as the high-spirited Denny Varney while Tim Homsley added to a growing track record of impressing audiences with his strong vocals and obvious skill for physical comedy.

Jerry Lee made a notable contribution to the group as Wally (with a hysterically funny silent moment of unexpected gay awareness) as did Derek Keeling, who crooned and ground his hips nicely as Skip. One of the show’s most sparkling assets was Sharon Rietkerk’s classically trained voice, which added a new dimension to many old standards while strengthening Lois’s character.

Life Could Be A Dream premiered in Hollywood in 2009, where it enjoyed a 12-month run and received the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award and LA Weekly Theatre Award, as well as the Back Stage Garland Award for Outstanding Musical. Current plans are focused on a national tour prior to an off-Broadway run. At every performance, audiences will have the opportunity to fret over:

  • Whether Denny and Eugene can go from singing with the Crooning Crabcakes of Springfield High to a genuine career in show business.
  • Whether Eugene can leave behind a steady job in his father’s sweet shop.
  • Whether Lois can overcome her parents’ objection to having their daughter be seen socializing with a grease monkey from the wrong side of town.

Rest assured there is a happy ending and the audience goes home with goofy smiles of satisfaction plastered all over their faces.

Ariana Grande Performs ‘Break Free’ On ‘SNL,’ Wears Cat Ears Again For No Discernible Reason

Ariana Grande performed “Break Free” on “Saturday Night Live” last night while inexplicably wearing cat ears. It’s not October yet. This was not an early Halloween performance or even a cat-themed performance. Although, it is a thing she has done before and presumably will continue to do without explanation. And so, it seems that Ariana Grande wearing cat ears is just another thing we have to accept, much like Ariana Grande wearing her hair in a high ponytail and the impermanent nature of human existence. Watch her super fun performance below.

If We Weren’t Already Married, Would You Choose Me Again?

When I deal with married couples facing difficulties in their relationship, I know that the key to help them effectively resolve their current problem lies in finding the core of love they felt for each other when they began their relationship. If they can revisit the reasons they originally chose each other, they will automatically be more motivated to triumph over their current distress. Their answer to this specific question tells me what commitment energy is still available for us to work with.

“If you weren’t married right now, how likely would it be that you would choose each other again?”

It would be a welcome surprise if the answers were always a resounding “yes.” More often though, the question is met with a perfunctory reassurance that might not reflect what each really feels underneath. It is more probable that I’m going to see two once-beloved partners struggle to answer what each would want to hear, but may no longer be fully true.

Perhaps they haven’t asked each other how they have changed who they are inside or what they have wanted differently for a very long time. Maybe they haven’t even thought of the individual dreams each may have left behind in service of the parallel team they have become. Dealing with the challenges and unexpected pitfalls they’ve had to face, what if they’ve forgotten how to love each other above all else? If their common goals didn’t materialize because tragedies emerged, illnesses took their toll, or outside temptations threatened their mutual trust in each other, how has that affected their relationship?

Significant challenges might have given opportunities for renewing their prior closeness, but perhaps the stresses were too difficult or too many for them to hold on to what they once knew. Most probably, after each succeeding crisis, they were just glad to return to life as it was, back in the day-to-day groove they came to know as comfort.

You Are Not Alone

If you are one of these committed couples who have drifted far away from your initial vows to love and treasure each other forever and above all else, please understand that your current state is not unusual.

Most people marry with the best of intentions to live out their lives together. They believe that their love is strong enough to weather any and all challenges that life will bring, strong enough in their union that they will triumph over all odds.

A committed couple, who transforms too often from personal intimacy to parallel commitment, may inadvertently and unconsciously exchange their original love bond for a more platonic friendship. In leaning on each other to get through the tough times, they can easily forget to recreate what brought them together in the first place.

As that parallel orientation becomes habitual, the original sweetness that made them pledge their hearts together can easily fall away without their knowing. Habits and rituals have replaced innovation and discovery. Compromise has suppressed individuality. The lure of secure predictability has become a way of life.

On the surface, this established couple may seem to have found a time-worn compatibility to be proud of, but underneath there may be a different story. They may have forgotten so much of what they once deeply knew about each other, or what may have changed dramatically inside that is no longer shared. Whatever newness, discovery, adventure, and exploration they had for themselves, each other, and the world when love was new has given way to doing whatever they can to make the relationship work.

If you ask them whether they still love each other, they will say, “of course.” If you ask them how their relationship is doing, they will say, “as good as you can expect, considering the challenges we’ve faced.” If you asked them, instead, “Given the chance to do your relationship over, what would you change?” and they were honest, you might hear stories about long-lost dreams that did not materialize, or decisions that they wish they could have made differently.

If you then ask them how they might make their relationship become more alive, passionate, and exciting, you might hear “I don’t know,” “That would be nice, but it’s okay the way it is,” or “I’m not sure.” It would be clear that they are not necessarily unhappy, but it is a far cry from what they felt at the altar place when they committed themselves to a lifetime together.

The couple is deeply entrenched in practicality and security, but their romantic connection has diminished. Even as their answers state the status quo, there are hopefully two people somewhere deep inside who once loved each other more passionately and are wishing desperately that the other will notice their fading light.

How can couples who have substituted comfort and predictability restore the significant connection they once knew and promised to each other? What tools can they use to prevent losing each other in the first place or find each other again if they are too far apart?

Prevention: Yearly Check-ins and Renewed Commitments

Every year of every love relationship, it would be ideal if intimate partners would take stock of what they wanted to happen during that year and whether or not they are on track. They could re-assess what changes have happened to each of them internally and inter-personally and whether they need to change some of their expectations. They would openly and honestly face any disappointments either partner might be feeling and how they could be addressed. They would make certain that their intimate connection stayed intact regardless of the outside challenges they might be facing. They would remember who they were when they pledged their forever love and would be willing to do whatever they needed to feel that way again.

Then, they would ask each other the crucial question: “What would I need to do or become today that would make you want to marry me again?”

As if in a new beginning, each partner would immediately make the other’s request of utmost importance and instantly begin making plans together to implement them. Willing to make each other front and center again, the couple would together strive to foresee potential disconnects and head them off before they gathered steam. They could help each other view the past year and evaluate what they had done, what resources were depleted in the process, and what they needed to do to repair any damage.

Repair: If You Need to Love more Deeply Again

If you love each other still but have forgotten how to show it to each other, begin with writing down the answers to each of these questions. Do that separately first before sharing them with your partner. Take your time and answer each one as completely and honestly as you can.

Before you share your answers, look deeply into each other’s eyes for five full minutes before you speak. During that time, ask yourself silently that, of this were the last time you would ever see each other, what would you feel? Hopefully, it would be great sadness.

If so, this exercise will prepare you to share and receive your authentic answers from each other with consideration and kindness, and begin your commitment to love each other more deeply again.

1) What did you most love about me when we married?
2) Why did you think I chose you?
3) What were your dreams then for us?
4) What have you felt have been some of our most precious moments over the years?
5) What experiences have pushed us apart?
6) What do you still love most about me?
7) How would you like me or our relationship to be different?
8) What do you need from me now to feel more treasured?
9) If you could have any kind of future with me now, what would it be like?
10) Would you like us to have more time alone together, and, if so, doing what?
11) Can you tell me your innermost thoughts and feelings? If not, what would that take?
12) If our relationship were to end, how would you be?
13) What are your disappointments in our relationship?
14) What good things have happened to us that you didn’t expect?
15) What would make you feel more alive and excited about your life?

This exercise is an opportunity for re-doing your wedding vows based on a long-term relationship of shared history and a much deeper knowledge of who you both have become. Whatever aspects emerge will be the foundations for change because you now have the best of a new beginning along with the lessons from the past. Hold on to all that is still sacred, leave behind what no longer is helpful, and commit to a new, re-ignited future.

‘Denim Day’ Reminds Us (Again) That Wearing Tight Pants Doesn’t Give Rapists An Excuse To Attack

Though some court rulings may imply otherwise, wearing tight clothing does not give rapists permission to assault.

Wednesday marks “Denim Day,” the awareness event when advocates and survivors speak up for the rights of people who have been sexually abused. The event dates back to 1999 when the Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction because the victim wore fitted jeans at the time of the assault. The justices ruled that the victim must have helped her attacker remove her pants, thereby giving her consent.

The following day, female politicians came to work wearing jeans to stand in solidarity with the victim. Peace Over Violence then turned that powerful statement into Denim Day — the day advocates wear jeans and attend rallies to protest against misguided attitudes about sexual violence.

Supporters are getting involved in a number of ways.

University of California, Berkeley students, for example, are distributing information about the campaign and giving people a chance to express messages about sexual assault on T-shirts and jeans. The Guess Foundation committed to making a $ 100,000 donation to Peace Over Violence, and has more than 400 stores participating in Denim Day efforts. Assault survivors are also using the awareness day as an opportunity to speak out. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck unified with the cause by wearing blue jeans to a Denim Day event in L.A., CBS Los Angeles reported.

Over the years, some progress has been made with regard to how survivors of sexual assault are treated.

In 2008, the Italian court overturned its original ruling and stated that “jeans cannot be compared to any type of chastity belt,” the Telegraph reported at the time.

Still, advocates say that rape survivors have to bear far too much stigma.

According to the Rape Abuse & Incest National Network, 60 percent of sexual assault cases in the U.S. are not reported to the police.

Denim Day supporters hope that their efforts will empower abuse victims, break taboos and help debunk misconceptions.

The way our society thinks about rape and receives survivors is not only tragic, it’s dangerous,” Mariska Hargitay, actress and advocate, wrote on Denim Day two years ago. “Fearing that they won’t be believed, survivors are less likely to report their rapes, which means rapists stay out of jail, which means they are free to rape again.”

Feeling inspired? Find out how you can get involved with Denim Day.

A Reason to Watch Saturday Night Live Again

Just a day after Saturday Night Live announced the midseason addition of Sasheer Zamata to the cast, and still weeks prior to her scheduled debut, at least one Hollywood critic was already scribbling an asterisk by Sasheer’s name.

*Token, undeserving, diversity hire.

SNL‘s decision to cast a Black woman for the first time in seven years — the fifth Black woman in the show’s 39-year history — was dismissed as a “discriminatory PR stunt,” and an overreaction to a few “isolated complaints.”

“If SNL standards were relaxed,” the critic wondered aloud, “this special initiative is going to look misguided in retrospect.”

I read the article and cringed. It’s precisely this type of patronizing mentality from industry decisionmakers, who in 2014 are still largely lily white, that underlies Hollywood’s continued undervaluation of both Black talent and Black audiences. It is an unacceptable status quo.

I, for one, plan to watch the show Saturday night for the first time in a long time, and will be rooting for Ms. Zamata in her major television debut. Although this young comedian will take the stage under a huge spotlight, I applaud Lorne Michaels and NBCUniversal’s willingness to take an innovative approach to fill a critical void that their traditional casting process left empty for too long.

Back in November, we at ColorOfChange.org sent a letter to Lorne Michaels raising concerns about recent casting decisions, as well as SNL’s history of problematic portrayals of Black women. We sat down with executives at NBCUniversal just before Thanksgiving to discuss those concerns in greater detail, share a representative selection of feedback gathered from our 900,000-strong membership, and open up a dialogue about the kind of example SNL can set for other television properties — not to mention the broader comedic universe — in committing to modernizing its hiring practices.

Weeks later, as rumors and pictures of midseason auditions began to circulate online, we were thrilled to learn from NBCUniversal executives that the innovative casting process they had undertaken in response to these concerns was successful in identifying not only a fantastic sketch comedy performer in Ms. Zamata, but two excellent comedic writers (LaKendra Tookes and Leslie Jones) as well. These are important first steps that should be applauded.

But rooting for Sasheer also means rooting for a writers’ room that has struggled in the past with the line between satire and stereotype. As I tune in to SNL on Saturday, I’ll be curious to see how the writers’ room adapts and takes advantage of all the new comedic possibilities that this new cast versatility affords — because while the spotlight may be on Sasheer for now, the pressure is still on those backstage to produce sketches that make us laugh, rather than cringe.
