John Oliver Says It’s Time To End Discrimination Against Gays

John Oliver says it’s time for the federal government to finish the job when it comes to gay rights

Speaking on HBO’s “Last Week Tonight” on Sunday, Oliver pointed out that while gay couples now have the right to get married, they don’t have many other rights in much of the nation.

In some cases, they have no rights at all.

Now Oliver is calling on the feds to extend basic civil rights protections to the gay community.

“States have a checkered history when it comes to civil rights,” Oliver said. “Just look at Arkansas right now. Not only do they not have any anti-discrimination ordinances, earlier this year they actually passed an anti-anti-discrimination ordinance that prevents any city or county from extending civil rights protections to gay people.”

As Oliver pointed out, that’s the opposite of progress.

“It would be like if Apple suddenly introduced the iPhone 7 and it was a flip phone,” he said. “That’s still not as dumb as the Apple Watch… but it’s dumb.”

Check it out in the clip above.

The Grand Conspiracy Against Publishing Your Book

Here’s what I believed when I was trying to get my first publishing deal:

There is a cabal of writers and publishers purposefully keeping me out. Every successful writer is part of this cabal. They know who I am and they hate what I write because it is too good and they feel threatened by me and my work. I’m just too brilliant. Too edgy. Too innovative and new.

Of course, I never verbalized this or said it in my head in this specific way or perhaps I would’ve realized how ridiculous and narcissistic and petty it sounds. But there was always a feeling of something being incredibly unfair, and if I give words to that feeling, then that is the feeling and those are the words, however delusional they may sound now. I never realized, at the time, how much comfort there was inside that feeling because it absolved me completely of any and all responsibility for my success or failure.

What did it matter how well I wrote? How hard I tried? Why bother rewriting anything? Why look for the cracks in what I’d already done? There was a vast conspiracy against me and my book and so, nothing was my fault. I was already perfect.

It is so incredibly tempting to take the power out of your own hands and put it in someone else’s. It’s terrifying to accept that what you write and how good it is, is ultimately up to you, because then you have to accept that maybe your first novel (all 80 000 words of it) isn’t good enough and maybe you have to start again from scratch. Maybe your writing hasn’t found an audience yet because, maybe, that audience doesn’t exist. Maybe the people who read it just don’t like it.

All those maybes are hard, painful things just to consider, let alone act upon. But the best writers I know not only entertain those thoughts, they sigh, roll their eyes and start again. They wake up feeling completely and utterly despondent, and then they go to work. The worst, on the other hand, often aren’t writers for long and if they are, they spend their time going to seminars and endlessly trawling through articles looking for tricks, for the right agent, publishing secrets and quick and easy tips — something, anything that doesn’t involve actually going back and doing the work — and it is work. Ask not for motivation. Ask for discipline.

Here’s the only real tip, trick or secret to writing:

You have to actually enjoy the act of writing, not the idea of being a writer, not the respect and awe you believe you’ll command as a writer, not the romance of tapping away at a typewriter or signing someone’s book — you have to love the numbing, horrible, finicky hard work of sitting there with sentences and paragraphs and pages, working out how to make each and every word sing its own song. The act of writing anything, a novel or a poem, is only slightly more pleasurable than it is laborious, and if you are a writer, you chase that little bit. You slave on, chasing. But if you’ve got that, then everything else stops mattering as much because that little, tiny bit is there every single time you sit down in front of a keyboard or a notepad. And it’s enough.

That’s it. It’s 2015. There are a million different ways to find your audience, if they exist. You just have to give them a good enough reason to, find you.

The plain and simple reality is it’s hard to get someone to read a book, let alone buy one. The process of becoming a writer, as a profession, is hard work and takes a long time and luckily, none of that matters if you enjoy the act of what you’re doing. And while sexism, racism and phobias of all kinds are real and terrible and should be revealed and stamped out wherever they’re found, all the writers and publishers I’ve met, didn’t have a single thing against me, or you.

And while that’s scary, it’s also really, really, really good news.

Good luck.

Nickelback Wanted By Australian Police For Crimes Against Music

Trashing Nickelback may be one of our great American pastimes, but this Australian police department just took hating the band to a whole new level.

The Queensland Police Service issued a tongue-in-cheek BOLO (Be On The Lookout) warning to locals via Facebook that the much maligned Canadian group would be bringing their crimes against music to the area. The faux wanted poster mocks the band for “impersonating musicians.”

Police are on the lookout for these men who are believed to be impersonating musicians around Boondall this…

Posted by Queensland Police Service on Tuesday, May 19, 2015

The quartet has been widely seen as a musical public enemy for decades. They were once deemed the second worst rock band of the ’90s in Rolling Stone.

Despite the disdain, Nickelback is still going strong and played in Brisbane, Australia on Wednesday.

Elitist haters, the New York Times mused, might be what gives Nickelback “a foundation on which to build an enduring fan base in the shrunken marketplace of the digital age,” despite being slammed for a commercial, formulaic sound and insincere lyrics.

Based on frontman Chad Kroeger’s reaction to an online petition to ban the band from the United Kingdom last fall, we’d guess he isn’t sweating the Queensland police.

“All these critics, they’re just tireless,” he told The Pulse of Radio in October. “They keep ragging on the band. If they had stopped writing all this stuff about us, there would be no controversy left in the band and we probably would have died out years ago. They don’t know that they’re still responsible for us being around today.”

Someone Requested All Of The FCC Complaints Against ’30 Rock,’ And They’re Magical

Ain’t no filth like Liz Lemon filth.

Tiny Fey’s “30 Rock” ran for 138 episodes, garnering more than 100 Emmy nominations, but apparently it should’ve been taken off the air far sooner, thank you very much.

The fine people of MuckRock requested every FCC complaint lodged against the sitcom — there were only nine, but some viewers took strong offense to the “crap” broadcast by NBC.

Many people were upset with the show’s language, including moment’s where Fey’s character Liz Lemon “called someone a son of a bitch” and an unidentified actor said, “Kiss my daughter’s ass.” A particularly dismayed viewer was offended by the line “Have you been soaking your tampon in vodka?” and ended their complaint chastising the character Jenna Maroney for “kissing a man dressed as a woman.”

And of course the network sensation “MILF Island” was mentioned by a foul-mouthed complainer: “M-I-L-F is acronym for ‘Mother I’d Like to Fuck’ This is shameful … Where in the WORLD is the decency rules and why are they not being enforced.”

Maybe the network should’ve run with “Queen of Jordan” instead.

Take a full look at all of the complaints below:

Filmmaker Fights the Stigma Against Mental Illness

2015-03-14-1426349822-1318183-Directing.jpgThe best thing about the #MyMentalHealthStory campaign I launched in December of 2014 is I have had the opportunity to meet some amazing people. In this interview, get to know filmmaker, Jeff Holiday. Here Jeff shares what inspired him to become a storyteller and how his family’s experience with mental illness and suicide has shaped the making of his short film, Boulevard.

Visit www.jeffholiday.com and www.boulevardthefilm.com to learn more about Jeff and his film.

Tell us about your background and film making experience.

My love for storytelling dates back to when I was very young. At age 12 my parents bought me my first video camera for Christmas. My friends and I would put together short little movies, commercials and stop motion videos, most of which are pretty embarrassing to watch now.

In 2005, right after my grandparents’ death, while at Floyd Central High School, I always wondered what was happening inside the school’s radio/TV room on my way to class. The following year I spent as much time as possible in that studio. Looking back, I was feeling lost and I used my ability to create things to deal with what was bothering me. This was just magnified after my grandparents’ death.

My experience in high school was great and led to me to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Telecommunications at Ball State University (BSU) and by my senior year I became the Executive Producer on PBS’s Connections Live, an Emmy Award winning news magazine show. I’m currently completing my Master of Arts in Digital Storytelling at BSU and I’ll graduate this May.

Your latest film project, Boulevard, is set in the future where mental illness is a myth and suicide is a crime. The story is about a man named Nathan who loses of his wife to suicide and his journey to understand if he could have prevented her death. I have read this plot was inspired by the murder-suicide of your own grandparents, Wayne and Shelby Hinton, in May 2005. Do you feel the main character Nathan is patterned after you and your experiences?

Yes, the character Nathan is patterned after my life although Nathan’s circumstances are different from mine and Boulevard is a different story from my own. For me, I knew making this film would emulate my past because so much creativity is driven by those experiences. And even though I’ve wanted to tell a story about suicide for a long time, I was hesitant because I was afraid of what people might think. But I stopped caring about others judgments and realized this type of story needed to be told.

Have you personally encountered stigma as it relates to the death of your grandparents?

I’ve encountered the stigma too many times to count, for a longtime I just avoided the conversation altogether. Most of my college friends didn’t know about my grandparents’ death until I started working on Boulevard. In getting Boulevard off the ground, I shared my story with those who were working on the film. It was difficult to tell colleagues my grandfather committed suicide, but even harder to share how he took my grandmother’s life. I just didn’t know how to approach it at first. But the more I told my story, the easier it got and I eventually shared my story with everyone who I worked with.

What does your family think about this film project?

At first I was worried about what my family might think, but they have been extremely supportive of my efforts. The reason I can so easily speak about my experience is because my family has encouraged me to talk about it. The subject of mental illness and my grandparents’ death has never been a secret in my family. If a family member wishes to talk about it, they are not discouraged. When we get together, the topic always comes up because it is part of who we are now.

Your desire to fight the stigma around mental illness is admirable. With one million people who die annually by committing suicide, we still have much work to do. Can you discuss how this film will educate about mental illness?

My goal is to create a film that is entertaining but also educational and thought provoking. While Boulevard is just one perspective — my perspective — out of millions, I hope it can help start conversations about mental illness independent of whether a person is personally struggling or not. The message of Boulevard will be very clear; the stigma has gone on for too long and we must stop it. Start your own conversation.

Where are you in the process of producing and completing Boulevard?

We are currently in pre-production for Boulevard and have completed casting the main roles and we will start filming in April. Once the film is complete, I’ll take Boulevard to the film festival circuit for the attention it deserves. As for distribution, I’m working on finding a place, but I can assure you I’ll give it away for free if I have to. I didn’t create this film to make money.

Why should people see this movie?

I think people should see Boulevard because it’s a different take on the topic of mental illness. While I’ve worked extensively in documentary filmmaking, and believe in its ability to persuade and encourage social change, it does have its limitation in that the audience is often limited to those who are already aware of the stigma and the need for change. In other words, it is preaching to the choir. By creating a fictional film the audience begins to broaden, reaching those who are unaware of the stigma many face.

Is there anything else you want to share with readers?

People always ask me if I’d do anything to bring my grandparents back. Obviously yes, I’d give nearly anything to see them again. But as I’ve gotten older I’ve realized something; while I’d do anything to see them again — it’s hard to ignore how much I’ve learned and grown from my experiences after their deaths. They gave me a lot while they were alive, and I feel they continue to do so even now.

‘The Case Against 8’ Released On DVD

When voters in California passed proposition 8 in 2008, queers around the world were stunned.

In one of the most liberal pockets of the United States, voters had chosen to strip the rights of gays and lesbian who wanted to get married — including many that had already been married when marriage equality came to California months before Prop 8 was enacted. The HBO documentary “The Case Against 8” takes an intimate look at the fight to overturn this legislation and the lawsuit that challenged its constitutionality.

Now, on January 13, “The Case Against 8” will be available on DVD. Check out the clip above to hear from some of the gay and lesbian couples who were engaged in this fight to overturn Proposition 8.

The Spirit of the Marshall Plan: Taking Action Against World Hunger, School Lunches for Kids Around the World

Invoking the same spirit that fueled the Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe, author William Lambers calls for a global school lunch program to fight child hunger. 300 million children suffer from hunger worldwide. School lunch programs fight child hunger and also boost school attendance and performance. This book highlights the use of school lunch programs in Europe following World War II and how they can be used today in countries like Afghanistan, Kenya, Guatemala and Sudan. The future of these nations depends on a nourished and educated youth. Special attention is given to the work of charities such as Food for the Poor, Childslife International and the World Food Program. Supporting the U.S. government McGovern-Dole Food for Education program is seen as key to ensuring every child around the globe can receive a school lunch. McGovern-Dole helps fund the work of the World Food Program, Catholic Relief Services and other organizations that carry out school lunch programs in developing countries.

Pope vs. Pope: World Cup Final Between Argentina And Germany Pits Francis Against Benedict XVI

The FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Germany could herald a rift in the Catholic church, pitting Argentine-born Pope Francis against German Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.

Pope Francis has almost surely been secretly rooting for Argentina, despite his pledge to keep his prayers neutral.

But Germany’s unbelievable 7-1 rout of Brazil during yesterday’s semi-final could make for an awkward final match for the Vatican’s holiest football fans.

When Francis first met Benedict XVI in person after his election, he declared, “we are brothers,” but family feuds have started over less.

Francis earlier joked of a “war” between him and his protectors, The Swiss Guards, during the Argentina-Switzerland match. But could we now see a holy war between two Popes?

No word from the Vatican as of press time, but fans are already speculating. The jury’s out on Jesus, however.

ODDS AGAINST TOMORROW: Book Review

Nathaniel Rich has a fine sense of the apocalyptic absurd–its comical as well as its dark side. Odds Against Tomorrow sets us in the not-so-distant future, in a world where the threat of global climate change has become all too real. His hero, Mitchell Zukor, is a professional worrier, a paranoid obsessive whose mathematical genius multiplies every possible gloomy scenario to its extreme. His counterpoint is his idealized love interest, one Elsa Brunner, a young woman with a heart condition that threatens to take her life at any moment, but who dares to challenge this danger by founding a remote commune far from the reach of medical attention. The risk she takes is, for Mitchell, at once exemplary and incomprehensible…

From college, our fear-driven hero drifts with all the innocence of a Candide–I thought a lot about Voltaire’s celebrated literary joust with philosophical optimism as I read this book–into the field of corporate risk management, where he soon discovers that vast profits are to be made from the exploitation of fear, and where he is valued precisely for his skill in making dire projections of disasters to come–including the one that broods over the first part of the story and comes to fruition in the second. I won’t spoil it for others who read the book, but suffice it to say that Rich’s descriptions of the cataclysmic results of the neglected signs of climate change are more powerfully persuasive than most of the disaster movies with which we entertain ourselves each summer. I can’t help but mention that the conclusion to all this mayhem reminds me, once again, of Voltaire’s final injunction in Candide: il faut cultiver son jardin–we must cultivate our garden; or, more broadly, we need to take care of our own affairs.

In this gripping, post-Hurricane Sandy parable for our times, Rich confronts us with the truly frightening prospect of what awaits us in consequence of our failure to address the issue of climate change. And yet his touch is light, essentially comedic. His nightmare scenario makes a mockery our gullibility, our ovine submission to the profit-motivated will of powerful corporate interests, our abject refusal to move beyond denial into action. At the same time, his Mitchell is an Everyman–an Every American, perhaps–a quasi-innocent duped by the dual forces of his own greed and fear into actions that inevitably plunge his world into the disaster that awaits it.

“Odds Against Tomorrow” is an excellent, entertaining romp through much that ails our present-day America.

Fight Back Against Drone Surveillance… With Fashion

The drones are coming to steal your privacy, but now there’s a fashionable way to tell them to butt out. Join the Stealth War Wear.

Stealth Wear, which was created by Adam Harvey, was designed to “protect the wearer from drone surveillance.” While it seems like privacy has become a privilege, it can now also be quite fashionable –Harvey has designed a scarf and hoodie that are “anti-drone,” limiting the thermal- imaging technology drones use to acquire information. Harvey spoke to Wired about what prompted him to create the collection of outerwear:

“Total surveillance is a term I first heard from Anders Sandberg during this presentation at a Tabula Rasa conference… He predicts that by 2050 a country can execute total surveillance on a population for .01% of their GDP.”

newmuseum

While we’re not quite sure when the drones will take over the skies, we do know that Stealth Wear will hit stores soon, although the clothing won’t come cheap. We have a feeling that their fashion show won’t be anything like Fendi’s, where drones were used to record their autumn/winter 2014 collection in Milan.

But while this mix of drone and fashion may seem out of this world, smart accessories (which are a little less scary) may be the next big “thing.” The Sesame Ring, NFC ring, the Shine and MEMI bracelet are the latest innovations that think for us, but they still can’t block drones — we’ll have to stick to our trusty Stealth Wear scarf and hoodie for that.

‘The Case Against 8,’ Which Debuted As Sundance, Recalls California’s Gay Marriage Battle

Two gay couples who waged a five-year court battle to restore same-sex marriage in California are back in the spotlight, in a new film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.

Paul Katami and Jeff Zarrillo, and lesbian couple Kris Perry and Sandy Stier, finally achieved their goal last June. But “The Case against 8” recounts the long and often dispiriting judicial battle they fought to get there.

The documentary, by filmmakers Ben Cotner and Ryan White, is in official competition at the independent film festival, which wraps up next weekend in the Utah ski resort of Park City.

The story begins on November 4, 2008 — the day Barack Obama became the first ever African American US president, but also the day Californians voted in a referendum on so-called Proposition 8 to outlaw same sex marriages.

The “Prop 8” decision came only a few months after the western US state’s top court had legalized gay marriage, and some 18,000 same-sex couples had already tied the knot before the referendum blow.

Gay rights campaigners acted immediately, creating the American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER) to take the case to court, where they filed a first lawsuit in May 2009.

“We heard about the case very early on, before it was filed and we asked them about the possibility of making a documentary about it, without knowing that someday it would become a bigger case,” Cotner told AFP.

“At the time, we had no idea that it would go all the way to the Supreme Court,” he added.

As well as the roller-coaster legal fight — from the plaintiffs’ first court victory in San Francisco to the US Supreme Court in Washington — the film also focuses on the two couples at the heart of it.

The four became the face of gay marriage in California, putting huge pressures on them.

“I’ve never been so nervous in my life. Even though we’re ready, there is the weight of ‘I can’t mess this up. I have to represent so many people,'” Katami says in the film.

The two couples “never knew that the case would become so big and they didn’t know that they would become the cement of the story,” co-director White told AFP.

“But on top of that, the idea of having a documentary crew following them probably was not the thing that they wanted most at the beginning,” he added.

A third duo also plays a central role in the film: lawyers Ted Olson and David Boies, nicknamed “The Odd Couple” by the media.

The pair, who had been on opposing sides in the infamous legal battle which resulted in George W. Bush’s 2000 election win over Al Gore, united “to fight for LGBT rights together,” White said.

“That was the heart of the case and probably the heart of the film too,” he added.

Olson, a fervent Republican, drew harsh criticism for supporting gay marriage, even though, as he says in the documentary, “marriage is a conservative value.”

“It’s two people who love one another and want to live together in a stable relationship, to become part of a family and part of a neighborhood and part of our economy,” he said.

The filmmakers said they were careful not to get carried away by the strong emotions on both sides, over the five years.

But their objectivity was seriously challenged when the US Supreme Court restored the right of gays to marry in California, on June 26 last year.

“Two days later, we were at the weddings and that day was the hardest day to film because it was so hard for me to concentrate on the film,” said Cotner.

“I just wanted to be a part of the wedding with them. “I didn’t want to be a filmmaker at that moment. I wished I was just a participant at the wedding,” he said.

HBO’s ‘The Case Against 8’ Screening Features Reception For Gay Couples At Sundance

PARK CITY, Utah (AP) — Though they are not considered legally married in Utah, several gay and lesbian couples were feted with a wedding celebration as part of HBO’s promotion of its upcoming documentary on gay marriage, “The Case Against 8.”

The film, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on Saturday, chronicles two gay couples battling against Proposition 8, the California law approved by voters that banned gay marriage. It was eventually declared unconstitutional. After the documentary’s debut, a reception was held featuring the two couples at the center of the legal fight, along with the film’s directors, Ben Cotner and Ryan White. The reception also featured gay couples at the center of a gay marriage battle in Utah. There was champagne and a wedding cake celebrating their unions, although the legality of them is in dispute.

“The timing is great to have the film released now, in the wake of the ruling here,” said Matthew Barraza, who attended with husband Tony Milner and their young son Jesse.

Last month, more than 1,000 same-sex couples wed in Utah after a federal judge declared the state’s ban on gay marriage unconstitutional. The state is appealing, and the Supreme Court put a halt on same-sex weddings until the case is resolved. In the meantime, Utah is not recognizing those marriages, although the federal government does.

Milner has yet to see “The Case Against 8” but said he appreciated the struggles of the couples featured in it.

“We’ve learned that it’s a battle, but it takes time. There are setbacks, but we think the inevitable result is that we’re going to have marriage equality for all Americans,” he said.

Acclaimed director Rob Reiner was also at the reception. Reiner was active in the battle to overturn Prop. 8 in California and is featured in the movie. He said he was blown away by “The Case Against 8.”

“I knew we had a good movie, but I was just stunned at how impressive it was and the reaction to it. It was amazing,” he said. “It really tells the journey that we went through to overturn Prop. 8.”

The film will air on HBO in June.
