On Love Alone

On Love Alone

The loss of a father, whether sudden or expected, can be devastating. Most of us find ourselves wading through memories and emotions, looking for comfort and meaning. This fine little book grew out of Jonathon Lazear’s own bereavement. A baby boomer who’d always found comfort in the wisdom of the written word, Lazear turned to his own reservoir of stories, talked to his friends and family, and mined his bookshelves to come up with this wise and comforting collection. On Love Alone is the tranquil place you’ve been looking for. It is a heartfelt collection of quotes, poems, and passages. On Love Alone is a book to give to others when a simple card is not enough. There’s no one way to grieve the death of a father, and while On Love Alone offers some advice, it’s really a coming together of stories, compassionate words from such diverse sources as C.S. Lewis and Bruce Springsteen.”I thought I could describe a state/ make a map of sorrow. Sorrow however, turns out to be not a state but a process.” -C.S. Lewis

How to Enjoy the Holidays If You’re Alone

For many of us, the holidays are a time for parties, presents, traditions, and spending time with family and friends. However, this isn’t the case for everyone. Whether by choice or because of work demands, financial issues, or other personal reasons, some people will be alone for the holidays. Regardless of the circumstances, here are four ways you can make your holiday alone a special one.

1. Appreciate what you have.

It’s common to hear people complain about their hectic holiday schedules, the annoying relatives they must visit out of obligation, and the stressful expectations the holidays bring. Solitude is rare for many of us and when we’re lucky enough to get a little time to ourselves, we cherish it. There are some people who would love to be in your position. So try to reframe your perspective — you may realize that being alone isn’t so bad.

2. Tackle a new project.

Whether you decide to paint your room a new color, catch up on your to-do list, or write the first chapter of your novel, it will feel good to set a goal and try to reach it over the holidays. It can even be something as simple as learning a new recipe or cooking yourself a delicious dinner. Whatever the task, enjoy your sense of accomplishment.

3. Pamper yourself.

Treat yourself to a relaxing experience. Take a long, luxurious bubble bath. Listen to your favorite music. Pamper yourself with a new manicure, pedicure, or facial. Take this time to create a peaceful atmosphere to recharge your batteries.

4. Volunteer.

‘Tis the season for giving and it has been scientifically proven that helping others makes us feel good. In fact, nothing is more rewarding than helping others in need. Doing so will also make you feel grateful for all that you do have.

All the hype around the holiday season could lead you to believe that you have to be surrounded by friends and family to have a good time, but being alone doesn’t have to mean being lonely. It’s all about your mindset. Stay positive, and remember that a holiday is just a day — and you can choose to spend it making yourself happy.

25 Reasons Kids Should Be Left Alone With Their Dads

Making fun of dads because they are “pretty much just giant children” is soooooooo 2011. Maybe y’all ain’t heard, but dads are getting all sorts of respect lately — not because they’re doing anything different, but because — ugh — who didn’t want to loosen up the grip a little, amirite?

Buzzfeed didn’t get the memo, so they put out a hilarious article titled “24 Reasons Kids Should Never Be Left Alone With Their Dads”. And besides some of the photos being genuinely funny with no real gender-specific blame to lather onto dad, it’s just kind of, well, you know… phoned in.

But here’s the thing: when you beat dads down over and over and make moms distrustful of them (even in jest), all it makes society say is “don’t leave your kids alone with dad — you KNOW what they do!” And then guess who has to deal with the pressure of raising kids, working, and doing their damn thing? Moms. So lay off, kk?

In light of this, I present to you 24 reasons (plus a bonus, you motherlovers) your kids should be left alone with their dads.

1. They’re Not Too Cool for Selfies

Because honestly, if a kid silly face will brighten your kid’s day, you check your pride and do it.

2. They Make the Coolest Lunch Pack-ins

Look for a Q&A with this dude here soon. Incredible work.

3. They’re Not Afraid of Creepy-Crawlies

There’s a couple of good “lizard” euphemisms I’ll pass up here.

4. They Know Their Way Around a Garden

And teaching a love for eating right!

5. The Best Family Portraits EVAR

Like, honestly.

6. They’ll Be At Every Game

Even if they’ve got two broken legs, they’ll make it there.

7. Family Movies in the Man-Cave

Because it’s just a cave if it’s not filled with family.

8. They’ll Wait Hours to Get You Next to the Trophy

You won’t care now, son, but when you’re older, it’ll be cool to have a pic of three generations next to that thing.

9. Discipline Is Sometimes in Character

Though really, everything BatDad does is in character.

10. Medical/Dental/Vision Insurance is a Number One Priority!

But you know what I mean.

11. They’re Into Crafts

And not above making up superheroes.

12. They Will Tell the Hell Out of a Story

Anything to make a bedtime story better.

13. They Beam With Pride

About everything their kids do — big and small.

14. They Make Great Pillows

And they don’t just run to Twitter to complain about it and demand wine.

15. They Aren’t Afraid

When their child arrived, they dove right in.

16. They Will Be Your Training Wheels

Until you can go it alone.

17. Seriously, the BEST Lunch Notes

We Q&A’d with this guy! Read it here!

18. They’re Not Afraid to Hold You Close

And take you everywhere.

19. They Let Their Kids Play With Their Old Toys

Because you can’t take it with you when you’re gone.

20. They Will Ride That Ride

Because it means a lot to you, son.

21. They Have Good Advice

Sometimes so good that it ends up in a book.

22. They Have a Conference About Being a Good Dad

And the support there flows. Pic of dad blogger Lorne Jaffe.

23. They Can Show Mercy

From BusyDadBlog: “She said ‘aw it’s so cute’ and proceeded to pet this fish. Of course we had to let it go.”

24. They Will Catch You

Not just when you fall, but when you jump.

25. They Honor Their Spouses With Pictures Too

Because if they didn’t respect their spouses, why would they be raising a kid with them?!

Your move, Buzzfeed.

Kelly Clarkson Felt ‘Pathetically Alone’ Before Meeting Husband Brandon Blackstock

In a new interview, Kelly Clarkson admits she was a bit lonely before she met her husband, Brandon Blackstock.

“I was single for almost seven years,” Clarkson tells Parade magazine of her love life prior to falling for Blackstock. “Every Christmas, it was like, ‘Seriously, I’m still pathetically alone? Awesome. I’m still telling people I’m okay with it? I’m not.’”

The 31-year-old said she only had three boyfriends in her life until last year, when she decided to give it a shot with Blackstock after meeting him at the 2012 Super Bowl. The two connected through her manager and his father, Narvel Blackstock. In February, following their December engagement, the “American Idol” star told Cosmopolitan, “I’ve never been truly loved like I am right now.”

Clarkson and Blackstock married in an intimate ceremony in Tenn., on Oct. 20 at Blackberry Farms after scrapping plans for a big to-do.

“I bawled like a baby,” she tells Parade of their wedding day. “We both wrote our own vows, and it was hard to get through them, but I did it … Brandon was like, ‘The Notebook ain’t got nothin’ on me — come on!’ And he took me out [on the lake] in a rowboat. It was very sweet. The whole thing was perfect.”

Soon, baby will make three. The singer announced she is pregnant with her first child on Twitter Tuesday (Nov. 19). Blackstock already has two children from a previous marriage.

“Everybody calls me fat all the time, so I can’t wait to have a reason, instead of everybody just being a jerk!” she admits to Parade about the pregnancy. “I’ve never been Gisele Bündchen, so ain’t nobody expectin’ that! I like to set a [low] standard so people don’t expect a lot.”

Read Clarkson’s full interview in Parade, due out Sunday.
