EXCLUSIVE: Wacoal America Is Getting a New CEO

Wacoal America’s changing of the guards is moving into the next phase.
Starting Oct. 1, Mitch Kauffman will be elevated to president, as Bob Vitale, who has been chief executive officer and president of the women’s intimates apparel company for more than seven years, takes on a lesser role in preparation for his upcoming retirement. The move is part of Vitale’s succession plan, which has been in the works for six months. Kauffman will officially become ceo of Wacoal America in March, the end of the company’s current fiscal year.
“I feel very, very confident that Mitch is the right person for this position,” Vitale told WWD. “The beauty of this situation is that Mitch has been here for three-and-a-half years. So he already understands our culture and our people. And I couldn’t be more delighted in terms of someone taking over my role.”

Wrangler is expanding its sustainability efforts with the launch of its new Rooted Collection.
The Greensboro, N.C.-based brand is working with local farmers to create the line of jeans and T-shirts from cotton that has been grown, milled, cut and sewn in the U.S.
The Rooted Collection features five state-specific pairs of men’s jeans: the Alabama Jean, the Georgia Jean, the North Carolina Jean, the Tennessee Jean and the Texas Jean. The collection will also include two T-shirt designs for each state, as well as two national designs.
“Connection to community and taking care of land are hallmarks of Western culture,” said Tom Waldron, president of Wrangler. “The Wrangler Rooted Collection reflects our commitment to strengthening local communities and supporting U.S. farmers. Amerika? America!: From Immigration to Espionage

This memoir was vetted by the CIA.”February 12, 2010: CIA Declassifies History of the Glomar Explorer”Interested in a first-hand account of Project Azorian? We have it! The story of how naval engineer Manfred Krutein assisted the CIA in raising a sunken Soviet submarine from the ocean floor, including orchestrating the “Hughes Glomar Explorer” ocean mining cover story for this secret project is told with breathtaking immediacy in his diary entries, which are interspersed with wife Eva’s third memoir of the Krutein family saga of emigration from Germany to Chile to the U.S.Eva Krutein – refugee, wife, mother, musician, community leader, writer – confronts every crisis in life with courage, honesty and good humor. Vol.1, “Eva’s War” takes place in Europe, as Eva and her infant daughter flee westward from Danzig in January, 1945. Vol.2, “Paradise Found, and Lost” tells how the growing family emigrates to Chile, lives and thrives there for nine years, and then decides to move again, to the USA. “Amerika? America!” is a story of rough beginnings, with gradual and sometimes comical adaptations to strangeness – it is California in the 1960s! – with five teenagers. Suddenly Eva’s narrative is interrupted by the voice of her husband, Manfred. His secret diary is quoted at length, revealing how his “ocean mining” assignment for Howard Hughes and the Glomar Explorer is really complex and extended cover for a secret spy project: raising a lost Soviet submarine from the floor of the Pacific. Eva and her family know nothing of this secret for years. The story tells of family tensions and growth to maturity, music and travel, especially to Hawaii, Iceland and back to Danzig [now Gdansk]. Told with compassion and honesty, the Krutien memoirs strengthen our feelings of worldwide human solidarity.”Another colorful, heart-warming tale of the Krutein family’s life adventures – this one addresses immigration to Amerika and the process of becoming American. Twelve-tone Music in America

Twelve-tone Music in America

Most histories of American music have ignored the presence of twelve-tone music before and during the Second World War, and virtually all have ignored its presence after 1970, even though so many major composers continued (and continue) to compose serially. This book provides a comprehensive history of twelve-tone music in America, and compels a revised picture of American music since 1925 as a dynamic steady-state within which twelve-tone serialism has long been, and still remains, a persistent presence: a vigorous and unbroken tradition for more than eighty years. Straus outlines how, instead of a rigid orthodoxy, American twelve-tone music is actually a flexible, loosely-knit cultural practice. The book provides close readings of thirty-seven American twelve-tone works by composers including Copland, Babbitt, Stravinsky and Carter, among many others, who represent a typically American diversity of background and life circumstances, and strips away the many myths surrounding twelve-tone music in America.

Trump: ‘Making America Hate Again!’

Trump’s official campaign slogan is “Make America Great Again!” Perhaps he should change it to the headline above.

The Huffington Post has made an editorial decision to put Trump articles in the Entertainment section instead of the political section. This seemed like a good idea at the time.

Admittedly he is the class clown — and the schoolyard bully. Oddly, also the teacher’s pet. But his toxic mix of egotism, cynicism and racism simply isn’t entertaining. It is, however, still a spectacle.

His now infamous tirade about Mexicans being criminals and rapists is well-known.

Recently two cowardly young thugs in Boston allegedly urinated on and used a metal pole to beat a 58-year-old sleeping Hispanic homeless man, fracturing his nose and causing other serious injuries. One of them reportedly told the police “Donald Trump was right, all of these illegals need to be deported.” (Apparently, the two assailants checked his immigration status before brutalizing him.) A news person asked Trump for his reaction, and Trump reportedly said “That would be a shame” adding this remarkable statement, “I will say, the people that are following me are very passionate. They love this country. They want this country to be great again. But they are very passionate. I will say that.”

His supporters chanted “USA! USA! USA!” when some protesters were thrown out of a Trump event in Phoenix — as if they were cheering at Wrestlemania.

This week at a press conference in Iowa, several times Trump ordered Univision anchorman Jorge Ramos, a respected journalist and an American citizen, to “Sit down,” as if Ramos were a dog being ordered by his unkind master to “Sit.” Trump also added to “Go back to Univision.” Then Trump nodded at one of his security guards who escorted Ramos out of the room.

In the hallway, a Trump supporter further humiliated Ramos telling him “Get out of my country.” Ramos responded with restraint, class, and dignity.

The delusional Donald has often claims that he will win the “Hispanic” vote. This assertion might be just another Trump empty promise. A recent Gallop Poll shows among Hispanic voters, he has the highest disapproval rate (65 percent) of any GOP candidate.

Apparently he is looking to carry Asian vote as well. Here’s Trump mocking them and doing a racially stereotypical impersonation of “these people”:

While Trump may not carry Latinos or Asians, he will likely carry the racists’ vote. It isn’t surprising that Trump is receiving endorsements from white supremacy groups and neo-Nazis. David Duke, former grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, has reportedly called Trump the best of the GOP candidates.

In an interview with Bloomberg’s Mark Halperin and John Heilemann, Trump reportedly said “I don’t need his endorsement; I certainly wouldn’t want his endorsement” and added “I don’t need anyone’s endorsement.” When asked if he would repudiate the endorsement, Trump is quoted as saying “Sure, I would if that would make you feel better.”

That doesn’t make me feel any better.

The Best of Enemies, an Oscar-worthy documentary on a handful of screens across America.

By Nicholas F. Benton

The Best of Enemies, an Oscar-worthy documentary on a handful of screens across America now but guaranteed to be a first-rate resource when it hits the Internet for many a moon to come, chronicles the 10 extraordinary, unscripted, live head-to-head TV throw-downs in the Summer of 1968 pitting two of the nation’s premiere intellectuals, William F. Buckley Jr. and Gore Vidal, against each other.

Aimed at spicing up ABC’s coverage of the Republican and Democratic national conventions that summer, the debates were a nationwide sensation because of how the sparks flew between these two men whose faces came within inches of each other and who genuinely hated each other. Not like the canned, insufferably boring exchanges between nominal adversaries swimming in the same big punchbowl of national politics and the major media these days, those exchanges in 1968 were raw, savage and produced, unexpected results, to say the least.

But as commendable as the Morgan Neville and Robert Gordon excellent and timely documentary is, the seminal importance of the Buckley-Vidal encounters (they were more encounters than debates) was missed in their presentation and in almost every review of the film to date.

The encounters represented an historical singularity, a single inflection point that tipped the national consciousness during that hot and intemperate August between the GOP conclave in Miami at the beginning of the month and the anti-war riots and police riot-filled Democratic one in Chicago at the end of the month.

First of all, they were not composed of equals, Buckley on the right and Vidal on the left. Buckley had behind him the full power of the nation’s entire military and industrial establishment, the scions prosecuting the Vietnam War who, as instinctively if not actually most Americans sensed were responsible for the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy just months earlier, and for that matter, before that, of John F. Kennedy and Malcolm X.

Vidal was a fitting adversary, but Buckley agreed to him because he thought he could eat him alive by his usual sophistic debating tactics that made watching his “Firing Line” TV show like watching fish being shot in a barrel.

Vidal was vulnerable in Buckley’s eyes because he was a semi-closeted gay man, intellectually talented but, so Buckley thought, no match for the kind of erudite stabs and cuts that Buckley’s superior mental and verbal rapier skills would bring into play.

Vidal, in my view one of the most under-appreciated figures in U.S. history, presented himself on the set with the eyes and body language of a lonely but brave and happy warrior, with really no one willing to back him up, a Gary Cooper in High Noon-ish type of figure.

This was no debate of equals, this was David versus Goliath if ever there was one.
Appreciating this makes what then happened so much more delightful and important, because Gore Vidal almost literally “tore Bill Buckley a new one.”

Vidal was relentless in taking the fight to his enemy, catching Buckley in contradictions by having researched and quoting from his works, and with highly-charged verbal assaults. Buckley was on the defensive but fought back with his legendary skills of repartee.

But then it got to the ninth encounter, on the eve of the final day of the Democratic convention in Chicago, on Aug. 28, as outside police were smashing anti-war demonstrator heads with billy clubs.

Vidal scored his coup de grace by calling Buckley a “crypto-Nazi.” The close-up of Buckley’s contorted, enraged face at that moment, as he leaned toward Vidal, was like a nasty close-up of the Alien in one of those movies. He snarled, “Now you listen, you queer, stop calling me a crypto-Nazi or I’ll sock you in your goddamn face and you’ll stay plastered.”

That was it. Vidal sank back in his chair with a slight smile. He’d won. Such filthy language was never spoken on TV in that era. Buckley was exposed and crushed.

Millions of Americans attracted to the high-brow nature of this fight subsequently felt permitted to come out against the Vietnam War, generating new waves of mainstream activism that eventually sealed its fate.

Vidal Bashed Buckley

Uniqlo Founder Tadashi Yanai Sends a Message to America

UNIQLO’S AMERICAN DREAM: Presidential candidates aren’t the only ones trying to relay more of a true-blue everyman spirit. Uniqlo founder, chairman and chief executive officer Tadashi Yanai is the latest top brass executive to pen a personal letter as an ad to customers. The black and white two-page spread in the Aug. 6 edition of last week’s New York Times was noticeably starker than the brand’s vibrant colorful campaigns in the past. Save for the red “Dear America” intro, Yanai’s words were colorless, but aimed to convey a warmth just the same. “This country is a place where, if you have something great to offer, you will be embraced. I believed that in 1984 when I opened the first Uniqlo store in Japan with the dream of one day bringing my new idea to the United States.”
Aiming to hit $ 250 million in global sales by 2020, Yanai literally spelled out a few new initiatives including the openings of stores in Boston, Chicago and Seattle. He also explained the company’s name as an abbreviation for Unique Clothing Warehouse, and noted that LifeWear is simple apparel with a not so simple purpose: To make your life better. Paul Griffin, president of Ted Baker London’s North American retail division, has exited the company after 16 years.
A spokesman for the U.K.-based brand said Griffin is “taking a new role in a different company.”
Ted Baker said “the three most senior members of the executive leadership team are already in place covering the retail landscape in America,” and these executives will take over Griffin’s responsibilities. The spokesman said they will report to the global retail director in the U.K.
“We wish Paul all the best as he seeks a new challenge, but this obviously creates a great opportunity for the senior leadership team, who have worked tirelessly over the years to take the brand to the next level as we continue our growth across all our business channels,” said Ray Kelvin, chief executive officer and founder of Ted Baker.
Griffin has been president of North American retail for five months. Before that, he was executive vice president of North American retail for 13 years. He started his career with the company in the U.K. as a regional manager in 1999.

Setting the Record Straight: The Nutcracker Comes to America

2015-07-18-1437180664-3334767-Nutcracker_cover.jpg

The clichéd rivalry between the East and West Coasts of the United States confounds those of us who grew up in distant lands. When it comes to ballet, in particular, many American balletomanes appear oblivious to the bustle outside the precincts of New York City.

On the subject of The Nutcracker, for example, many subscribe to the myth that George Balanchine’s 1954 reinvention of the Russian classic for New York City Ballet “sparked an American holiday tradition” — in the words of Laura Jacobs, who penned a fascinating exploration of Balanchine’s Nutcracker for Vanity Fair, even as she played fast and loose with the essential detail of the ballet’s arrival on American shores.

Other scholars – like Jennifer Fisher, who wrote a sociological meditation on the industry that now props up most American ballet companies (Nutcracker Nation) – identify Willam Christensen’s 1944 production for San Francisco Ballet as the first full-length American production, whose enormous popularity astonished even its creator.

And now a captivating children’s book arrives to set the record straight for the younger generation.

2015-07-18-1437180781-4647996-Nutcracker_spread.jpg

In The Nutcracker Comes to America, author Chris Barton introduces us to the remarkable Christensen brothers, Willam, Harold and Lew, whose “dance-loving, violin-playing grandfather” emigrated from Denmark and settled in Utah. We follow the young men’s zigzagging journeys from the ballet studio to vaudeville stages across the country, to New York to dance for the greats like Balanchine and Fokine, and into the army, against the backdrop of World War II.

Lew, the most naturally gifted of the three, became the first homegrown American danseur noble, and a choreographer of some repute. For Lincoln Kirstein’s Ballet Caravan, he created Filling Station, a comic slice of Americana set in a gas station populated with “truckers, a gangster, a state trooper, and a little girl who really needed to use the restroom.”

The restless Christensens couldn’t seem to stay put. Which turned out to be providential for American ballet, especially on the West Coast. Willam brought ballet to Portland, Oregon, and later established the formidable Salt Lake City company that would be known as Ballet West. In between, there was San Francisco, where he and Harold spun off the ballet troupe from the opera company, while Lew “traded in his ballet shoes for army boots.”

It was during wartime America, when many dancers were off fighting and money was especially scarce, that Willam needed a big hit “to keep ballet alive in San Francisco.” He loved the great Russian classics and though he’d never seen them performed – at least not in their entirety – he would research them painstakingly. As part of his research for The Nutcracker, he cornered Balanchine and Alexandra Danilova and had them recount for him as much of the detail of the Petipa production as they could recall from their own experience dancing in it.

The Christensens’ peregrinations, and the delightful goings-on onstage and backstage during the first Nutcracker, are illuminated in the arresting illustrations by Cathy Gendron – multiple coatings of thin oil glaze meticulously layered over pencil drawings on gesso, then lightly textured, as if burnished by steel wool. The colors glow softly on the page, and the whimsical yet realistic figures convey energy and emotion that will intrigue adults as much as children.

Ballet to the People‘s favorite drawing is of Lew Christensen on a New York City sidewalk, still in his army uniform, having just returned from wartime service. He is looking wistfully through the windows of a ballet studio while class is in session. The narrative reads: “[Y]ears in the army had done a number on his body. He couldn’t dance like he’d danced before.”

Lew would eventually bring the Balanchine technique and style to San Francisco Ballet in the early 1950’s, when he took over the company reins after Willam moved to Salt Lake City.

Don’t be misled by the book title. This is much more than the story of the transplanting of a famous Russian ballet. And not just a book for little girls who dream of dancing in tutus and pink satin pointe shoes.

This is a real-life adventure story about “a trio of small-town Utah boys” with grit and talent, who bucked stereotypes, endured failures and persevered, and who individually and together enriched the cultural life of America.

For older readers and adults (and dance writers keen to fill in the gaps in their historical knowledge), Barton provides a more detailed timeline at the end of the book, including some marvelous vintage photos.

Throughout the children’s tale and the more grown-up addendum, a light wit prevails, and there is much to read between the lines. About the 1892 premiere of The Nutcracker at the Mariinsky Theatre, Barton comments laconically, “It does not catch on.” And those who are familiar with the hard business of ballet know that it was the Christensens’ sheer determination that kept San Francisco Ballet afloat for decades.

2015-07-18-1437180835-6613679-Nutcracker1.jpg

English critic Richard Buckle famously groused that every Christmas brings us “one more Nutcracker closer to death.”

Yet across America, spurred by the early Christensen and Balanchine productions, and by the popularity of the brilliantly animated ‘Nutcracker Suite’ in Disney’s Fantasia, the ballet has become a hallowed ritual — not just for audiences, but for the legions of young performers who grow up through the ranks of mice, soldiers, Mother Ginger’s children, candy canes, snowflakes, waltzing flowers, and Russian acrobats, their eyes on the prize: the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier.

So many of those young dancers in training are unaware of the colorful history behind this tradition. Barton and Gendron’s new book does its bit to fill that gap, with charm and wisdom.

Observing America: The Commentary of British Visitors to the United States, 1890-1950

Observing America: The Commentary of British Visitors to the United States, 1890-1950

Beginning with Alexis de Tocqueville and Frances Trollope, visitors to America have written some of the most penetrating and, occasionally, scathing commentaries on U.S. politics and culture. Observing America focuses on four of the most insightful British commentators on America between 1890 and 1950. The colorful journalist W.T. Stead championed Anglo-American unity while plunging into reform efforts in Chicago. The versatile writer H.G. Wells fiercely criticized capitalist America but found reason for hope in the administrations of Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin Roosevelt. G.K. Chesterton, one of England s great men of letters, urged Americans to preserve the vestiges of Jeffersonian democracy that he still discerned in the small towns of the heartland. And the influential political theorist and activist Harold Laski assailed the business ethos that he believed dominated the nation, especially after Franklin Roosevelt s death. Robert Frankel examines the New World experiences of these commentators and the books they wrote about America. He also probes similar writings by other prominent observers from the British Isles, including Beatrice Webb, Rudyard Kipling, and George Bernard Shaw. The result is a book that offers keen insights into America s national identity in a time of vast political and cultural change.

Pink and Blue: Telling the Boys from the Girls in America

Used – Jo B. Paoletti’s journey through the history of children’s clothing began when she posed the question, “When did we start dressing girls in pink and boys in blue?” To uncover the answer, she looks at advertising, catalogs, dolls, baby books, mommy blogs and discussion forums, and other popular media to examine the surprising shifts in attitudes toward color as a mark of gender in American children’s clothing. She chronicles the decline of the white dress for both boys and girls, the intro

‘Every Last Child,’ or Ways to Mistrust America

Thankfully, we have documentaries, such as Every Last Child, to open a window on what’s going on in the world, beyond Kardashians and Cait Jenner. Just when you thought it couldn’t get any nastier out there, here’s a movie about the drive to eradicate polio in Pakistan, home to the planet’s most cases — and lo, the Taliban issues a ban against the vaccination program, gunning down health workers.

Admittedly grim, the film is compelling because documentarian Tom Roberts, a sophisticated craftsman, plays the story for suspense: Will the medical personnel striving to stamp out polio succeed in the face of the Taliban’s murderous opposition? Roberts infuses his account with human interest by focusing on the dramas of several individuals affected by Pakistan’s current polio crisis. And, in infiltrating Karachi’s gathering places — at what feels like considerable risk — Roberts really gets the story’s full dimensions by presenting the side of the anti-vaccinators.

Everyone has their reasons, as Renoir has famously remarked. And though the Taliban’s actions are beyond despicable, in this film, their muddled reasons become somewhat understandable. Not only do they implicate America in this health crisis — they bring into sharp focus the double-edged role and image of this country across the world.

The human interest stories Roberts teases out spotlight the daily travails of a badly crippled beggar, struck by polio in childhood and painfully navigating the streets on a hand-wheeled bike (by film’s end, mercifully, he receives a new motorized one), a devastated father whose toddler gets fitted for leg braces, and a family struggling to come to terms with two women relatives who were shot by the Taliban for distributing drops to immunize the country’s children.

At the center of the crisis is a medical specialist from the World Health Organization, confounded at finding himself in the crosshairs of politics, bloodshed and misinformation designed to frighten the masses (such as Taliban propaganda labeling the vaccine a sinister conspiracy by the West that could cause, among other afflictions, impotence).

Child gives human contours to a country little understood in the West. The words of Habib Mehsud, the crippled beggar reflecting on his fate could be something out of Tolstoy in his Christian phase.

And lenser Ali Faisal Zaidi hauntingly captures dusty playing fields, colorful fabrics, watery byways and the beautiful faces of the country’s at-risk children. In its portrait of human forbearance Child resembles The Salt of the Earth, a must-see doc, currently in theaters, about the great humanist photographer Sebastaio Salgado.

The most illuminating takeaway from Child, however, might be the suspicion in many quarters of anything with an American or a Western imprimatur, even a vaccine to prevent polio. As one Pakistani remarks in a café: How can you trust a country that one moment dispenses medicine, and the next kills our people with drones?

This Is What Happens When Presidential Candidates Tinder With America

Let’s make sure we swipe right on the best candidate for the job.

When you think about it, the dynamic between a president and their country is a pretty serious four to eight-year relationship. And America can’t afford to hook up with just anyone. It doesn’t work out well. Sure, Tinder is a visual game, but once somebody swipes right on you, that’s when the test really begins.

So let’s combine the two grossest things in modern America, Tinder and politics, and imagine exactly what kind of conversation the presidential candidates would have with the nation once they got to the swipe right stage of the process.

“I Have a Dream”: A 50th Year Testament to the March That Changed America, A Southern Christian Leadership Conference Commemorative Photo Journal

On August 28, 1963, something quite amazing occurred. On the day, one of the largest political rallies ever took place in support of civil and economic rights of African-Americans and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave one of the most stirring speeches in history, when standing in front of the Lincoln Memorial, he delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech. This book is a celebration of the 50th anniversary of this address and includes narrative and more than 100 captioned photos of the American Civil Rights movement. The photographs come from Bob Adelman, one of the most notable photographers of this movement. His work has been featured in Time, Newsweek, and the Associated Press. It is authored by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), an organization in which Dr. King served as the first president.

America Is Owned and Operated by Rich Douchebags

Many years ago, as I sat in the backyard of a comedy condo in Treasure Island Florida, a wild-eyed old hippy, with a broken down boat, suggested I read a book called A People’s History Of The United States by Howard Zinn. It sounded sort of subversive, so it interested me.

I went to the library and tried to track it down. Couldn’t find it. Probably had the title wrong or something. But it stuck in the back of my mind. Then recently, I was watching Tavis Smiley and he mentioned the book and the author. This time I found it and read it. Frankly, every American should read it, or a book like it. Something by Noam Chomsky would be close. In fact, Howard Zinn makes reference to Chomsky’s writing several times in A People’s History Of The United States.

Why is this book so important, you ask. Because it defines, in great detail the fact that this country is and always has been run by a small handful of very rich douchebags!

Now, you might say, “Rich douchebags?” that implies that just being rich makes someone a bad person. That is nothing more than class envy.

Wrong. These people really are douchebags. By almost anybody’s definition, except perhaps their own.

I’m not even going to accuse them of douchebaggery due to the fact that many of these people, including the Founding Fathers, owned slaves. Lets pretend that was just a societal aberration of their time. Like wearing powdered wigs and having syphilis.

So what made and makes the one percent of our population who own 40 percent of the nation’s wealth, so awful?

Well, for one thing, up until the last 80 or 90 years, they routinely ended any labor unrest, such as strikes or sit ins, with armed goons beating and shooting strikers. And these strikers would be people like children, working in coal mines and striking to shorten their 16 hour work days. After beatings and shootings and imprisonment, the bosses, many of whom were great heroes of American industry, like Andrew Carnegie and J.P. Morgan, would make sure that all strike organizers, who survived, would be fired and blacklisted.

In fact, all of the concessions won for labor by unions in the past century, came inch by inch with thousands of casualties along the way. It would be fair to say that the richest people in America were no more enthusiastic about the human rights of their workers than white Southerners were about giving black people their rights, during segregation.

It would also be fair to say that today’s robber barons earn the coveted Douchebag Award for outsourcing labor to sweatshops in the Third World, where the unsafe, inhuman conditions and the child labor of our past, still exist. Nike would be a good example of this, if you need one.
Now, you might say, oh yeah, but when there is a democrat in the White House, like that big Lefty Obama, certainly then things are better for the poor and disenfranchised.

Wrong. One might expect that a community organizer like Obama might cut military spending and beef up social programs benefitting the poor. You know, like he talked about when he was first running for president. Not the case. Our current annual military budget is estimated at $ 581 billion. That is more than the rest of the world combined spends on defense. If that seems absolutely insane, it’s because it is.

Imagine what half of that defense budget could do to improve our public schools, provide health care for the poor and middle class and create job training for people who need it the most.
Obama keeps talking about helping veterans, how about bringing back the G.I. Bill, to provide college educations for all veterans who want one.

As Zinn points out in his book, war has been used all along as a huge money maker and as a diversion for the poor and working classes, to keep them from thinking too much about how they are being treated. Lets all rally around the flag and not think too much about the fact that our boss makes hundreds of times what the average worker earns.

And this constant warfare has made us reviled all over the world. I will end this with a passage from A People’s History Of The United States.

Three years before the terrible events of September 11, 2001, a former lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force, Robert Bowman, who had flown 101 combat missions in Vietnam, and then had become a Catholic Bishop, commented on the terrorist bombings of U.S. Embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. In an article in the National Catholic Reporter he wrote about the roots of terrorism:

We are not hated because we practice democracy, value freedom, or uphold human rights. We are hated because our government denies these things to people in Third World countries whose resources are coveted by multinational corporations. That hatred we have sown has come back to haunt us in the form of terrorism…. Instead of sending our sons and daughters around the world to kill Arabs so we can have the oil under their sand, we should send them to rebuild their infrastructure, supply clean water, and feed starving children…

In short, we should do good instead of evil. Who would try to stop us? Who would hate us? Who would want to bomb us? That is the truth the American people need to hear.

Promoting Silicon Valleys in Latin America: Lessons from Costa Rica

Promoting Silicon Valleys in Latin America: Lessons from Costa Rica

The spectacular economic performance of China, East Asia and India during the last ten years has ignited some profound changes in the world economy. The share of global demand, investments, trade and production of the traditional industrialized powers, the US, Europe and Japan, has gradually yet continuously declined. This rise of China also has implications for Latin America. On the one hand, booming Chinese demand for raw materials and food has sustained the economic performance of Latin America during the last decade. On the other hand, the competitiveness of China and as a hub for advanced manufacturing is threatening Latin America’s attempt to diversify its economy from its dependence on the export of natural resource-based goods. Most Latin American countries are not however waiting passively for their economies to become ever more reliant on high prices for food, minerals and oil. Leveraging the economic and political stability that they achieved during the last decades, many countries in the region, such as Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica and Uruguay, are attempting to capture the growing market for knowledge intensive products and services by breeding their own Silicon Valleys. This book discusses the promotion of ICT clusters in Latin America by analyzing the development of the Costa Rican cluster in particular, an often celebrated case of successful policy in the region. Costa Rica, a small country traditionally known for its coffee and wildlife, managed to build an information technology cluster within ten years, becoming the leading producer of ICT per capita in Latin America. Studying the Costa Rican case provides a solid starting point for understanding the challenges of building ICT clusters in Latin America.

Dead on Arrival: The Politics of Health Care in Twentieth-Century America

Dead on Arrival: The Politics of Health Care in Twentieth-Century America

Why, alone among industrial democracies, does the United States not have national health insurance? While many books have addressed this question, Dead on Arrival is the first to do so based on original archival research for the full sweep of the twentieth century. Drawing on a wide range of political, reform, business, and labor records, Colin Gordon traces a complex and interwoven story of political failure and private response. He examines, in turn, the emergence of private, work-based benefits; the uniquely American pursuit of “social insurance”; the influence of race and gender on the health care debate; and the ongoing confrontation between reformers and powerful economic and health interests. Dead on Arrival stands alone in accounting for the failure of national or universal health policy from the early twentieth century to the present. As importantly, it also suggests how various interests (doctors, hospitals, patients, workers, employers, labor unions, medical reformers, and political parties) confronted the question of health care-as a private responsibility, as a job-based benefit, as a political obligation, and as a fundamental right. Using health care as a window onto the logic of American politics and American social provision, Gordon both deepens and informs the contemporary debate. Fluidly written and deftly argued, Dead on Arrival is thus not only a compelling history of the health care quandary but a fascinating exploration of the country’s political economy and political culture through “the American century,” of the role of private interests and private benefits in the shaping of social policy, and, ultimately, of the ways the American welfare state empowers but also imprisons its citizens.

Unplugged: Reclaiming Our Right To Die In America

Unplugged: Reclaiming Our Right To Die In America

Medical technology has helped mankind conquer tuberculosis, polio, and countless other once certain-death diseases. It has given us hope against cancer and AIDS, allowed heart and brain surgeries that have saved untold numbers of lives, and delivered us from the pain and crippling legacy of injury. Medical technology, it seems, is a never-ending string of miracles.

But it is also a double-edged sword. More often than not, death today happens because of a decision to stop doing something, or to not do it at all. As the tragic life and death of Terri Schiavo so poignantly illustrated, universal definitions of life, death, nature, and many other concepts are elusive at best. Unplugged addresses the fundamental questions of the right-to-die debate, and discusses how the medical advances that bring so much hope and healing have also helped to create today''s dilemma.

This compelling book explores recent high-profile cases, including that of Mrs. Schiavo, and illuminates the complex legal, ethical, medical, and deeply personal issues of a debate that ultimately affects us all. Compassionate and beautifully written, the book helps readers understand the implications of current laws and proposed legislation, various medical options (including hospice), and the typical end-of-life decisions we all must face in order to make informed decisions for ourselves and our loved ones.

The hardcover edition of Unplugged was chosen by The Library Journal as one of the Best Consumer Health Books of 2006.

Promoting Silicon Valleys in Latin America

Promoting Silicon Valleys in Latin America

Weeds of North America

Used – Many a gardener has cursed the vitality and versatility of weeds. But for every extra few hours of toiling they may cause the individual gardener, they reap millions of costs upon industries–from agriculture to landscape architecture to golf courses. In each of these settings, weeds compete for resources, often triumphantly; they provide new vectors for plant pathogens, and are also known for their natural irritation in the form of toxins, thorns, prickles, etc. In the state of Californi

Voltage Valet Electrical Adaptor for use in North, Central, and South America – “A” Plug

Voltage Valet Electrical Adaptor for use in North, Central, and South America – “A” Plug

PackingLight.com’s job is to outfit the traveler with all of the travel essentials one needs to venture anywhere. Our selection of Voltage Valet adaptors allow you to connect your appliance into the outlets of the world.Plug type “A” in for use in North, Central, and South America where outlets have our American-style configuration. The outlets and the voltage in the western part of the world is often the same as in the United States. There are exceptions however where outlets don’t have the large “hole” for our wider polorized prong on modern-day appliances. The Voltage Valet “A” plug adapts American polorized prongs to use in the other countries of the America’s specified above. The good news is that in most of North, Central, and South America the voltage is 110. Argentina, Brazil, and a few South American countries can have a mixture of 110 or 240 voltage in different establishments. Check our link below to see just what outlets and what voltage you should see in these specific countries in the world. If you have any questions please call us on our toll free number, 1-800-349-0525.We urge visitors to click to our Foreign Electrical page to get more in-depth information on when you need adaptors and converters for travel. Most often we find our customers do not need converters/transformers to bring down the 240 voltage found in foreign countries. The reason is they possess appliances that are already dual voltage with the capability to use anywhere without using converters. That is correct, people with most battery chargers and small travel appliances can check their appliance and discover their appliance has a rating specification that reads “100/240V”–indicating that the appliance is dual voltage and can work on the high 240 voltage abroad. So please check you chargers for MP3 players, digital cameras, razors, camcorders, cell phones, etc. and look for yourself. In addition, check your compact, folding hair dryers, travel curling irons and straighteners, travel steamers, irons, and coffee makers. If they’re built specifically for travel and/or purchased from PackingLight.com, we can save you the cost of buying a converter when you probably don’t need it!NOTE: Some countries use more than one type of outlet and you should carry the appropriate adaptor for each outlet listed. Again, adaptor plugs DO NOT convert electricity – they simply modify foreign outlets. To determine the adaptor plug you need see our link to Voltage Valet’s country list in the Electricity Guide section. http://www.voltagevalet.com/elec_guide.html

Implosions of America: Nine Stories

Implosions of America: Nine Stories

From an online review by WindSwept: “This is a work of honesty, confusion, and humor. Mr. Biddle challenges all men to step up and be something we are, but have somehow forgotten what it is. If we can somehow value forgiving, far more than forgetting, we maybe on to something great. There is a vision of greatness in this work! Men trying to be men, but not sure if the rules have all changed, and if they are still allowed to be men. Nine stories or one story with nine parts, nine souls, nine paths. What is it to be a man? In a culture of lies and distortions what can the man do to create his own culture, his own journey? It is not about being a hero, it is about the love and compassion we fill our lives with. Mr. Biddle’s work is all about kindness, what it really takes to evolve as a man. Women should read this book to really discover what they need and want in a man. David Biddle is a poet writing books, he makes a mob become an audience, I wish him great success with this novel.

Ciao, America!

Ciao, America!

In the wry but affectionate tradition of Bill Bryson, Ciao, America! is a delightful look at America through the eyes of a fiercely funny guest – one of Italy’s favorite authors who spent a year in Washington, D.C.When Beppe Severgnini and his wife rented a creaky house in Georgetown they were determined to see if they could adapt to a full four seasons in a country obsessed with ice cubes, air-conditioning, recliner chairs, and, of all things, after-dinner cappuccinos. From their first encounters with cryptic rental listings to their back-to-Europe yard sale twelve months later, Beppe explores this foreign land with the self-described patience of a mildly inappropriate beachcomber, holding up a mirror to America’s signature manners and mores. Succumbing to his surroundings day by day, he and his wife find themselves developing a taste for Klondike bars and Samuel Adams beer, and even that most peculiar of American institutions – the pancake house. The realtor who waves a perfect bye-bye, the overzealous mattress salesman who bounces from bed to bed, and the plumber named Marx who deals in illegally powerful showerheads are just a few of the better-than-fiction characters the Severgninis encounter while foraging for clues to the real America. A trip to the computer store proves just as revealing as D.C.’s Fourth of July celebration, as do boisterous waiters angling for tips and no-parking signs crammed with a dozen lines of fine print. By the end of his visit, Severgnini has come to grips with life in these United States – and written a charming, laugh-out-loud tribute. From the Hardcover edition.

Roadside America

Roadside America

This title presents roadside Americana, fantasy, kitsch and joy on the American roadside. Before the advent of corporate communications and architectural uniformity, America’s built environment was a free-form landscape of individual expression. Signs, artifacts and even buildings ranged from artisanal to eccentric, from deliciously kitsch to quasi-psychedelic. Photographer John Margolies spent decades documenting these eye-catching and endearingly idiosyncratic examples of roadside advertising and fantasy structures, a fast-fading form of Americana. This book brings together approximately 400 color photographs arranged into chapters by subject: Main Street signs, movie theaters, gas stations, fast food restaurants, motels, roadside attractions, miniature golf, and Atlantic coast resorts. In an age when online shopping and mega-malls have reconfigured American consumerism, Margolies’ 30-year survey reminds us of a more innocent, unpredictable and colorful past.

Listen Carefully, This Is What Rape Culture Sounds Like In America

Two women just explained the insidious nature of rape culture in under three minutes.

At the 2014 National Poetry Slam in August, spoken word artists Desireé Dallagiacomo and Mwende Katwiwa (a.k.a FreeQuency) performed the poem “American Rape Culture,” and explained how some of the songs we sing along to on the radio are directly contributing to rape culture. The result is a bold poem that reminds us how subtle — and dangerous — misogyny can be when put to a pop song tune.

Dallagiacomo begins the spoken word by pointing out that Robin Thicke sings the line “I know you want it,” 18 times in “Blurred Lines.” Katwiwa adds that in Rick Ross’ “You Ain’t Even Know It” the rapper says, “Put molly all in her champagne, she ain’t even know it. Took her home and I enjoyed that, she ain’t even know it.” Rape culture has become so mainstream that we hardly bat an eye when music icons sing about it.

“If you take the time on any given day to pay attention, you really start to notice these elements of rape culture permeating almost all areas of American life,” Katwiwa told The Huffington Post. “Many of the examples used in the poem were things Des and I had already heard of or read about prior to sitting to write the piece, but when we did additional research, we were kinda overwhelmed with all the different examples we could have put in our poem.”

Katwiwa’s and Dallagiacomo remind us how intolerable these trends in pop culture are when you consider that nearly one in five women will be raped in their lifetimes. As Katwiwa says in the poem, “Rape no longer only knows closed doors and dark alleyways, it’s assimilated into our daily routine.”

The Church-State Debate: Religion, Education and the Establishment Clause in Post War America

The Church-State Debate: Religion, Education and the Establishment Clause in Post War America

The Establishment Clause of the First Amendment governs the relationship between the institutions of the church and those of the state; the Supreme Court, as arbiter of the Constitution, has, since 1947, sought to determine where the line between the two should be drawn. This book shows how and why the Court drew the line in particular cases and how and why the lines that were drawn by the Court had an impact on the relationship between institutions of government and the Church, shaping US politics and society. Using the Supreme Court’s cases as a framework, the book shows how the constitutional underpinnings of church-state debates shaped the political, economic, and social debate on the issue, and explores broader debates about religion and American society. This book maintains that the Court cases cannot be understood separately from the context from which they arose and that legal factors are only part of a broader picture for a historical understanding of the Court and Establishment Clause cases.

Alice Morse Earle and the Domestic History of America

Alice Morse Earle and the Domestic History of America

Author, collector, and historian Alice Morse Earle (1851-1911) was among the most important and prolific writers of her day. Between 1890 and 1904, she produced seventeen books as well as numerous articles, pamphlets, and speeches about the life, manners, customs, and material culture of colonial New England. Earle’s work coincided with a surge of interest in early American history, genealogy, and antique collecting, and more than a century after the publication of her first book, her contributions still resonate with readers interested in the nation’s colonial past. An intensely private woman, Earle lived in Brooklyn, New York, with her husband and four children and conducted much of her research either by mail or at the newly established Long Island Historical Society. She began writing on the eve of her fortieth birthday, and the impressive body of scholarship she generated over the next fifteen years stimulated new interest in early American social customs, domestic routines, foodways, clothing, and childrearing patterns. Written in a style calculated to appeal to a wide readership, Earle’s richly illustrated books recorded the intimate details of what she described as colonial “home life.” These works reflected her belief that women had played a key historical role, helping to nurture communities by constructing households that both served and shaped their families. It was a vision that spoke eloquently to her contemporaries, who were busily creating exhibitions of early American life in museums, staging historical pageants and other forms of patriotic celebration, and furnishing their own domestic interiors.

‘The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants’ Had Another Reunion To Support America Ferrera

Nothing can keep the “Sisterhood” apart, clearly,

The ladies of “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” reunited on Saturday when Amber Tamblyn, Blake Lively and Alexis Bledel showed up to support their fellow “sister” America Ferrera at her new play, “Lips Together, Teeth Apart.” Tamblyn posted a photo to Instagram of herself with Lively and Bledel at the off-Broadway show with the caption, “Go America! Supporting our girl in her play, Lips Together, Teeth Apart. #sisterhood.” Ferrera then tweeted the photo, thanking her friends for showing up.

While we love seeing the ladies reunite in real life, we’re still hoping for an onscreen reunion. Last year, Ferrera told InTouch that all of them would love to work together again. “I think the four of us only ever think about how we can get back together and make people pay us to be with each other,” Ferrera said.

Robert Downey Jr. Will Reportedly Star In ‘Captain America 3’

“There’s no plans for an ‘Iron Man 4,'” Robert Downey Jr. told David Letterman during an interview on Oct. 7. “There’s no script for ‘Iron Man 4,’ but they do have a plan, and I think [Marvel is] going to announce it. You know, they’re very secretive about it.” As it turns out, not secret enough: According to Variety, Downey will reprise his role of Tony Stark for “Captain America 3” in a storyline that will pit Stark against Captain America and set off a new wave of Marvel films. Downey’s representatives had no comment on the story when contacted by HuffPost Entertainment.

Having Downey continue his reign as Tony Stark was far from a forgone conclusion. The 49-year-old had only two films left on his current Marvel deal, “Marvel’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron” and “Marvel’s The Avengers 3,” and frequently discussed a desire to maybe back away from Iron Man.

“To me, it comes down to what’s the half-life of people enjoying a character?” Downey said to Deadline.com in a recent interview. “It’s different on TV, where you expect the longevity over seasons while movies get a two or three year break. Marvel keeps stepping up its game, and I appreciate the way Kevin Feige and all the creatives there think. They are as in the creative wheelhouse as any great studio has been at any point. So it becomes a matter of, at what point do I cease to be an asset to what they’re doing, and at what point do I feel I am spending so much time either shooting or promoting these films that I’m not actually able to get off the beachhead and do the kind of other stuff that is good for all of us. […] It all has become this thing that has to be figured out. It has come to a head, right now, where the points of departure will be.”

As it turns out, the departure for Downey will be in the character himself. According to Variety, Downey’s starring role in “Captain America 3” will kick off Marvel’s Civil War storyline, which will find Iron Man, as a de facto villain, battling Captain America over the Superhero Registration Act, “which forces anyone with superhuman abilities to reveal their identities to the U.S. government and agree to act as a police force for the authorities.” The ensuing plot from the 2006 comic book connects multiple Marvel characters, including the current Avengers roster, Ant-Man and Luke Cage (as well as members of the “X-Men” and “Fantastic Four” franchises, neither of which are part of Marvel Studios at the moment). Earlier on Monday, Marvel tweeted that Civil War #1 was coming in the summer of 2015, but offered no further information about the comic beyond its artwork — fittingly, a shot of Iron Man and Captain America in the throes of conflict:

Anthony and Joe Russo will return to direct “Captain America 3,” which is due out May 6, 2016. The film was initially set to go against “Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice,” but Warner Bros. moved that film to March 25, 2016 in an effort to move away from the Marvel blockbuster. Now that it’s Iron Man vs. Captain America, that date change looks even smarter.

For more on Downey’s “Captain America 3” role and how the negotiations went down, head to Variety.

King Cotton in Modern America

King Cotton in Modern America

King Cotton in Modern America places the once kingly crop in historical perspective, showing how “cotton culture” was actually part of the larger culture of the United States despite many regarding its cultivation and sources as hopelessly backward. Leaders in the industry, acting through the National Cotton Council, organized the various and often conflicting segments to make the commodity a viable part of the greater American economy. The industry faced new challenges, particularly the rise of foreign competition in production and the increase of man-made fibers in the consumer market.Modernization and efficiency became key elements for cotton planters. The expansion of cotton- growing areas into the Far West after 1945 enabled American growers to compete in the world market. Internal dissension developed between the traditional cotton growing regions in the South and the new areas in the West, particularly over the USDA cotton allotment program. Mechanization had profound social and economic impacts. Through music and literature, and with special emphasis placed on the meaning of cotton to African Americans in the lore of Memphis’s Beale Street, blues music, and African American migration off the land, author D. Clayton Brown carries cotton’s story to the present.

Dismayed by the relentless onslaught of faceless American chains muscling in where local businesses had once thrived, Dave Gorman set off on the ultimate American road trip – in search of the true, independent heart of the U S of A. He would eat cherry pie from local diners, re-fuel at dusty gas stations and stock up on supplies from Mom and Pop’s grocery store. At least that was the idea. But when did you last see an independent gas station? Gamely, Dave beds down in a Colorado trailer park, sleeps in an Oregon forest treehouse, and even spends Thanksgiving with a Mexican family in Kansas. But when his road trip mutates into an odyssey of near-epic proportions and he finds himself being threatened at gun point in Mississippi, Dave starts to worry about what’s going to break down next. Why America Was Full-On Obsessed With The Tiki

For a while in midcentury America, Tiki was king of the land. With Polynesian-themed hotels, restaurants, cocktails, theme parks, apartment condos, music, movies and more, America’s infatuation with the Hawaiian Islands and Polynesian culture reached a fever pitch before suddenly collapsing. A new visual history of the phenomenon was recently released by Taschen, called Tiki Pop: America Imagines Its Own Tiki Paradise. Elaborately illustrated throughout 36 chapters, author Sven Kirsten shows how Tiki came to represent the “noble savage” lifestyle, free from the structures of Western civilization.

The hardcover, 9.8-by-12.8-inch tome ($ 59.99) is published in conjunction with an eponymous exhibition in France on view through Sept. 28 at the Musee du Quai Branly in Paris, curated by Kirsten.

(Story continues below…)
tiki pop book cover

“Americans developed a strong affection for the Hawaiian Islands,” Kirsten writes. “Fueled by popular literature, music, and Hollywood movies, the people of mainland USA fabricated a romantic vision of Polynesia that ignored complex realities of native culture in favor of an idealized island fantasy.”

How It Began:

capt cook human sacrifice

In the 18th century, Western explorers such as Captain James Cook (above) wrote back to Europe legendary reports, which became the talk of the town. “It was the first step toward changing perception of the Pacific Islands from fact to fiction . . . [where people] dreamed of tropical island beaches as romantic getaways and as an escape from old traditions that were holding them back and had lost their luster.”

How It Was Painted:

paul gauguin taschen

If explorers reported in travelogues what they saw in Polynesia, it was the artists and writers who had the “mission to chase the dream,” according to Kirsten. The painter Paul Gauguin was so inspired by the legends of the Pacific that he quit his job as a Parisian stockbroker, left his wife and child, and “became the quintessential example of an artist’s struggle and bohemian existence in the tropics: shunning conventional modes of living” and even sharing his bed with his nude models. Although his talent wasn’t recognized until after he died, Gauguin’s lifestyle was “burned into the minds of those craving refuge from civilization.”

How It Was Written:

stevenson kalakaua

Robert Louis Stevenson (pictured above with Hawaiian King David Kalakaua), Jack London and Herman Melville’s books also fueled the Tiki inferno. Melville’s 1846 novel, Typee, was a big success while the author was alive (Moby Dick, Kirsten notes, “was not recognized in [Melville’s] own time”), and Stevenson considered Kalakaua a close friend. Stevenson was so enamored by Polynesia that he is quoted as saying, “It is perhaps a more fortunate destiny to have a taste for collecting shells than to be born a millionaire.”

How It Was Copied:

cliftons pacific seas

The popularity of South Seas films like Mutiny On The Bounty and The Hurricane quickly led to tropical-themed bars in Los Angeles. What’s popular in LA, so goes into the rest of the country. One such restaurant, Clifton’s Cafeteria in downtown LA, was the most elaborate “urban island” of the 1930s and 40s. “Built like a movie set inside and out, it featured multiple floors of tropical fakery, with interior palms, bamboo huts, waterfalls, and neon flowers throughout,” describes Kirsten. Urban legend says Walt Disney took some inspiration from Clifton’s for Disneyland.

How We Got Drunk:

don the beachcomber

With South Seas entertainment so popular, and the end of Prohibition, the character of the beachcomber came around as the middle ground between local native and visitor. In 1934, Ernest Beaumont Gantt opened a bar, Don’s Beachcomber Cafe in Los Angeles, and devoted the rest of his life to this persona. Around the same time, the poet laureate of Hawaii, Don Blanding, had produced volumes of well-received poems. Gantt, likely inspired by Blanding’s stanzas of Hawaiian life, legally changed his name to Donn Beach, also known as Don The Beachcomber (pictured above in his backyard with Hollywood starlets). Beach’s restaurants, and the secretive drinks he created for them (such as the Zombie), became the standard for Tiki bars across the world thereafter.

How We Went Overboard:

the kahiki bar ohio

Like Bass Pro Shops does for hunters today, the Kahiki Supper Club in Columbus, Ohio, did for Tiki pop. It featured a Hall of Waterfalls at its entrance, as well as a Quiet Village that led down Kalakaua Street to a two-story high Moai fireplace with “glowing eyes and flaming mouth.” Kirsten describes the Kahiki as a “great example of independent entrepreneurs . . . letting their imaginations create grand new versions of Polynesia Americana.” Although it was registered on the National Register of Historic Places, it was torn down in 2000 to make room for a Walgreens.

How Tiki Pop Died:

tiki bad taschen

Eventually, when the kids of Tiki lovers grew up (during the social revolutionary times of the mid-1960s), the lifeblood of Polynesian romanticism — capitalism, military presence, cultural appropriation — fell out of popularity and became things to protest. “Postwar baby boomers found their parent’s Polynesian posturing somewhat ridiculous, their attitudes toward native cultures patronizing,” Kirsten writes. “American Tiki met the same fate as its Polynesian antecedents. Its idols were abandoned and discarded on the trash heap of passé pop cultures.”

What Hath God Wrought: The Transformation of America, 1815-1848

What Hath God Wrought: The Transformation of America, 1815-1848

The Oxford History of the United States is by far the most respected multi-volume history of our nation. In this Pulitzer prize-winning, critically acclaimed addition to the series, historian Daniel Walker Howe illuminates the period from the battle of New Orleans to the end of the Mexican-American War, an era when the United States expanded to the Pacific and won control over the richest part of the North American continent. A panoramic narrative, What Hath God Wrought portrays revolutionary improvements in transportation and communications that accelerated the extension of the American empire. Railroads, canals, newspapers, and the telegraph dramatically lowered travel times and spurred the spread of information. These innovations prompted the emergence of mass political parties and stimulated America’s economic development from an overwhelmingly rural country to a diversified economy in which commerce and industry took their place alongside agriculture. In his story, the author weaves together political and military events with social, economic, and cultural history. Howe examines the rise of Andrew Jackson and his Democratic party, but contends that John Quincy Adams and other Whigs–advocates of public education and economic integration, defenders of the rights of Indians, women, and African-Americans–were the true prophets of America’s future. In addition, Howe reveals the power of religion to shape many aspects of American life during this period, including slavery and antislavery, women’s rights and other reform movements, politics, education, and literature. Howe’s story of American expansion culminates in the bitterly controversial but brilliantly executed war waged against Mexico to gain California and Texas for the United States. Winner of the New-York Historical Society American History Book Prize Finalist, 2007 National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction The Oxford History of the United States The Oxford History of the United States is the most

God Bless America

God Bless America

“God Bless America” is taught in American schools and regularly sung at sporting events. The phrase is often used by politicians and even emblazoned on car bumpers. After the attacks on September 11th, the song became a central part of public mourning and commemoration, as it was sung at memorials both official and ad hoc: on the steps of the Capitol, at spontaneous memorial sites, and during the seventh inning stretch at baseball games. Love it or hate it, “God Bless America” has come to inhabit our collective American consciousness. This book tells the fascinating story behind “God Bless America.” After examining the song’s function during the period directly after the September 11th attacks, it moves back in time to the song’s composition by Irving Berlin in 1918 and first performance by Kate Smith in 1938, revealing an early struggle for control between composer and performer as well as the hidden economics behind the song’s royalties. The book then focuses attention on the song’s early reception in the years following its 1938 radio debut, showing how its popularity reflected the anxiety of this pre-war period and revealing a surprising anti-Semitic and xenophobic backlash. It then traces the song’s shifting uses and meanings from 1940 to the present, following a rightward ideological trajectory from early associations with religious and ethnic tolerance to increasing uses as an anthem for the Christian Right. It ends with a portrait of the song’s post-9/11 role within professional baseball, illuminating the power of the song-and of communal singing itself-as a vehicle for both commemoration and coercion. Tracing the history of “God Bless America” reveals larger cultural shifts within American culture in the twentieth century: seismic changes in the popular music industry, in the assimilation and acceptance of outsiders, in the rise of the ideological Right, in rifts between generations, and in definitions of Americanness itself. Both a surprising historic …

What Awesome Conservative Cartoon Death Is America Missing out On?

This week’s poll from the Lester & Charlie Institute of Forward Thinking!

Conservatives are always outraged about something. A few weeks ago, we told you about the right-wing umbrage being tossed around — not because of Obamacare — but because of good old comic books. Well, for the conservative Comic-Con set, it’s getting worse.

Conservative comic book writers have already complained that illustrated heroes have become too complicated. Superman is “less patriotic.” Batman is too “dark and ambiguous.” Moral relativism is ruining our cherished American medium, and the real villains are those crazy liberals conspiring to keep conservative cartoonists from telling their wholesome stories!

There’s only so much that conservative comic fans can stand before they corner the market on Kryptonite and hold the world hostage, they cried!

All this yammer was before Marvel Comics thwakked conservatives this week with a double-whammy. First, we learned that the hammer-wielding Marvel character Thor will be reintroduced to readers as a woman. And the new Captain America will be black! Holy agenda, Batman!

This might have been enough to send these folks over the cliff. But then we read some incredible news, this time from Archie Comics: Archie Andrews, beloved white-bread icon since 1941, will be killed off in a storyline that has him taking a bullet for a gay gun-control advocate.

Yes, you read that right. “Life With Archie,” a progressive Archie Comics spin-off that imagines Archie, Betty, Veronica and Jughead as adults dealing with cancer and money troubles, first made news when it introduced an openly gay character, Kevin Keller. Keller is portrayed as a military veteran turned U.S. Senator who later went on to get gay married and take a firm stance in favor of gun control.

And now there’s this: The four-year-old spin-off series will conclude when Archie gets in between the gay gun-control Senator Keller and his would-be assassin.

If conservative comic book fans were sock-hopping mad before, this news is going to have them lining up at the Acme Corporation for a stockpile of instant holes and dynamite plungers.

Speaking of dynamite plungers, comic book characters do die. Jimmy Olsen, Lex Luther and even Hercules are pushing up daises along with hundreds of others.

So, back to those conservative writers who are complaining that comic book publishers don’t let them tell their stories. Are they of the opinion that everything should always stay the same, thank you very much, and let’s stop messing with things? Or would they take the side of killing off cherished characters?

We’d like to think these writers would rise to the challenge. No good writer, conservative or not, could forever resist the opportunity for a bold story move — even if that meant killing off an important character.

But how would they do it? If Archie Andrews is taking a bullet for homosexuals and gun-control advocates, how would these conservative writers put their spin on the inevitable death of a cherished character? And, more important, who would they kill? And how would they do it? Tell us what YOU think!

Why Vanessa Williams Never Thought She’d Win Miss America (VIDEO)

Thirty years ago, Vanessa Williams made history as the first African-American woman to be crowned Miss America. In her interview for “Oprah’s Master Class,” Williams says never believed it was really possible for her to win before she actually took the crown.

Williams was a theatre major at Syracuse University and says she had no interest in pageants at first. She blew off the idea until her junior year, when she entered the Ms. Greater Syracuse Pageant – and won. “Then I ended up winning Syracuse, New York and Miss America in September within six months period of time,” Williams says.

During the Miss America 1984 competition, Williams says she took advantage of the talents she already had. “I sang a song that was easy for me,” she says. “I majored in musical theatre, so it wasn’t like I had to come up with an act.”

Though she thought she might place in the top 10, Williams didn’t think it would go further than that. “So I just basically was there to have a good time, I really did not think that I would win because I didn’t think that it was the time,” Williams says. “There had never been a black Miss America, so why would it be this year? If so, possibly I knew that I had what it took, but I didn’t think they’d actually go for it.”

After winning the title, her reign as Miss America was fraught with controversy. Williams opens up about the challenges she faced and the Penthouse scandal that forced her to resign on “Oprah’s Master Class” airing Sunday, July 13 at 10 p.m. ET on OWN.
