Celebrating My Dad’s First Birthday After He Passed Away

July is my father’s birth month.

We’d always celebrate with a family gathering; if the weather was nice, badminton, lawn darts and a backyard barbecue were the activities du jour. If the clouds took over, plenty of conversation ensued indoors, streamers and celebratory décor looking down on our giggles and well wishes. The events always concluded with my dad eating his favorite chocolate crunch-filled ice cream cake.

It was a day filled with reminiscing, laughing and pondering the future. It was a time when we truly recognized that every day is nothing short of splendid, and that in the end, we’re blessed to appreciate all life has to offer.

However, my father passed away earlier this year, five months shy of what would have been a celebration of his 64 years on Earth.

2015-07-09-1436456556-2309831-HuffPostDadBday.jpg

Learning to Like the “Would Have Been” Phrase

“Would have been” always struck me as a silly phrase in reference to those who passed away. People who said it were allowing themselves to wallow — unnecessarily so — in sadness. Noting the would-have-been age of the departed mentally prolongs a life that no longer exists, a kind of latching on to that makes the loss all the more painful. Cherishing memories and thinking of the deceased are one thing, but a continual blow-by-blow account of every birthday, anniversary and career would-have-been was hard for me to understand. I’d often cringe inside upon hearing others say their grandmother, who passed 27 years ago, “would have been 98 today.” Same for headlines about celebrities who “would have turned 100 this week.”

Yet as is common in situations where we hold tight to an opinion until it directly affects us — at which point we’re often open to new views and develop drastic shifts in perspective — I quickly took a liking to the phrase after my father’s death.

What’s wrong, after all, in mentally bringing him back, be it looking through pictures, playing a recording of his voice or yes…recalling that July is his birth month and he would have been 64 years old. If the closest I get to having him back are moments in which I dream of him and in the beautiful memory of a Would Have Been, then in the end, I’m blessed. The day is nothing short of bittersweet splendor.

So, armed with a new appreciation for this world of Would Have Been’s, I take great pride in letting everyone know that this month is my father’s birth month. I reflect on what would have been, wondering what would have been said, what gifts I would have gotten him and who would have scrambled for that last piece of crunch-filled dessert.

It’s our first July without him, the lawn void of darts, the grill covered.

In Death, A Celebration of Firsts

However, this first is also cause for celebration.

My father is no doubt on a journey we have yet to fully understand and I can only imagine that its awe far exceeds any game of lawn darts. In some ways, I view his departure as a birth, imagining him in a perpetual state of streamers and crunchies, if you will.

As such, I’m going to make it a point this month to not only remember the 63 year journey he had on this planet, but I’m also planning to celebrate what is now his first journey beyond the ones he had here.

As with birthdays, so it is with a loved one’s death: it’s a time of reminiscing, laughing and pondering the future. It’s a time when we truly recognize that every day is nothing short of splendid, and in the end, we’re blessed to appreciate all life has to offer.

Happy first birthday, Dad.

Away in a Manger

Away in a Manger

It’s Christmastime in 1905 New York City, and for once, Molly Murphy Sullivan is looking forward to the approaching holidays. She has a family of her own now. She and Daniel have a baby son and 12-year-old Bridie is living with them as their ward. As Molly and the children listen to carolers in the street, they hear a lovely little voice and see a beggar girl, huddled in a doorway singing Away in a Manger. Bridie is touched by the girl’s ragged clothes and wants to help her out if they can. They give her a quarter, only to watch a bigger boy take it from her. But it turns out he is the girl’s brother, and they’ve come from England and are living with an aunt who mistreats them terribly. When the young boy is accused of stealing a purse, Molly intervenes on his behalf. These children are clearly not the usual city waifs. They are well-spoken and used to better things. So who are they? And what has happened to their mother? As Molly looks for the answers to these questions, she gets drawn into an investigation that will take her up to the highest levels of New York society.

Viola Davis Refused To Do ‘How To Get Away With Murder’ Unless Annalise Took Off Her Wig

In one of the most memorable scenes of this year’s television season, Viola Davis’ “How to Get Away with Murder” character Annalise Keating removed her wig, jewelry and makeup on screen.

As it turns out, that scene was integral to Davis’ decision to take on the role, according to comments the actress made at the show’s recent For Your Consideration panel (via Vulture):

There was something for me that I didn’t buy about Annalise in private. It felt like who she was in private had to be diametrically opposed to who she was in public. And so in order to do that, I felt like I had to physically take the wig off. I mean, I have no eyebrows. I have eyelashes that I put on, and there was something extremely vulnerable about that act — and I know it seems like a very simple act at the end of the day — but for me, that simple act really surmounted to something very powerful in the end, because what it was was someone being very, very private in public, which is absolutely the cornerstone of what we do as artists.

The scene was but one of many that broke network TV barriers in the first season of “How to Get Away with Murder,” which garnered praise for its depiction of gay sex and nuanced exploration of sexual violence.

For more of Davis’ comments from the panel, head over to Vulture.

Party In A Galaxy Far, Far Away At This ‘Star Wars’ Cantina Pop Up

We can hear the cantina song already.

Immersive events company Secret Cinema is known for lovingly bringing classic films to life. Last year, the group recreated suburban Hill Valley of “Back To The Future” fame in London, with impressive attention to detail and simultaneous live performances of key scenes onscreen. This summer, though, they’re pulling out all the stops, bringing “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back” to merry old England.

True to its name, many details of this year’s event are secret. But we do know this year’s ticket holders are getting a bonus: a chance to visit the Mos Eisley cantina, the pirate city’s seediest watering hole, from the planet Tatooine. As a sort of sideshow to the main event, those with tickets will receive a message revealing the cantina’s location, and be encouraged to come in costume. Because, oh yeah, everyone is assigned their own character. Participation in Secret Cinema events is key — audience members will be part of the Rebel Alliance. There’s even a shop open in East London for participants to pick up costume paraphernalia. (We said this thing was fun, not cheap.)

The Secret Cinema crew has invited audience members into the world of film since 2007, with over 40 productions to date.

“We’re trying to blur the line,” creative director Fabian Riggall told The Huffington Post. “What is the audience and what is the performance?”

Dick Cavett Explains How David Letterman’s ‘Mask Of Innocence’ Helped Him Get Away With Anything

Late-night TV legend Dick Cavett joined HuffPost Live on Wednesday to look back on the legacy of David Letterman and say goodbye to the subversive comedy icon, who officially begins his retirement after his final “Late Show” episode airs tonight.

Cavett, a longtime fan of and former guest on Letterman’s show, told host Josh Zepps that the key to Letterman’s incredible interview style was his ability to hilariously insult his guests even as they sat right next to him, creating a unique “sense of danger” on his show. Cavett said Letterman was able to sneak by his biting barbs thanks to “that hayseed, rustic, Midwestern, innocent, clownish face.”

In order to do “those things that he was criticized for and the dummies didn’t get,” Cavett explained Letterman often hid his cutting wit “behind a wonderful mask of innocence, and I think that’s what made it effective for those who dug it, among whom I was one.”

Cavett added that often guests had no idea they’d been hilariously ripped apart by Letterman until after the interview was over.

“David’s attitude — it wasn’t so much ever what he said — but his attitude and his looks were priceless, and I’m sure some of [the guests] were stunned when they got home, saw themselves with David and saw what he had done to them,” Cavett said.

Taylor Swift Dances The Night Away At Rumored Beau Calvin Harris’ Show

Taylor Swift showed love for her rumored boyfriend Calvin Harris in the best way she knows how — bouts of goofy dancing, obviously. The “Style” singer and her celebrity BFFs, the Haim sisters, hit up 102.7 KIIS FM’s Wango Tango concert in Carson, California on Saturday to watch Harris perform. While Swift didn’t take the stage with the DJ, she was a spectacle in her own right when she started busting some signature dance moves during his set:

Though the pair has yet to verbally address their alleged romance, photos of Swift and Harris holding hands at a Haim concert and getting cozy at a Kenny Chesney concert in April seem to be doing all the talking for them. Plus, he met her cats, so we’re pretty sure that means they’re official.

Former NBA Player Jay Williams: ‘I Threw It All Away’ (VIDEO)

Jay Williams was poised to become one of the biggest superstars in the NBA. After leading Duke to a NCAA championship in 2001 and earning a national player of the year title, he graduated early to receive a No. 2 draft pick with the Chicago Bulls.

After playing one season, Williams was riding his motorcycle in Chicago — a violation of his contract — and lost control, crashing into a utility pole. He survived the severed nerve, fractured pelvis, dislocated knee and internal bleeding, but the psychological damage of the accident remained. His NBA career was over before it really began, and Williams tells Oprah in his upcoming “Super Soul Sunday” interview that he was left only with remorse.

“The first thing I yell is, ‘I threw it all away,’ Williams says. “I felt at that moment that I had thrown everything I had just worked for my entire life away.”

Williams says he couldn’t even think about being lucky to be alive. “I couldn’t even process what was happening at that particular moment,” he says.

Weighing heavily on Williams’ mind were the warning signs he ignored. “I’ve been told so many times not to ride this bike,” he says. “I’ve had a dream about this particular moment that I decide not to listen to.”

He’s referencing a premonition he had at age 17 about his accident. Williams dreamt he was spinning out of control and looked up to see a red fire hydrant, the exact scene he would experience years later during his motorcycle crash.

“Here I was in the situation that I’ve got all these signs telling me not to do this and I still put myself in that position to do so,” Williams says. “And, yeah, I felt like I threw everything I worked my entire life for away.”

The accident tested his will to live, and Williams says he became consumed with thoughts of “what could have been.” After 13 surgeries and hours of physical therapy, Williams attempted to return to the NBA in 2006 but was unsuccessful. He says he has spent the last decade on a journey to forgive himself and reclaim his purpose in life.

Jay Williams opens up to Oprah about his darkest moments and how he learned to let go on “Super Soul Sunday” airing Sunday, March 15 at 11 a.m. ET on OWN.

The Modern-Day Message We Can All Take Away From ‘Selma’ (VIDEO)

In 1965, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led thousands of nonviolent crusaders on a 54-mile march from Selma, Ala., to the state capitol in Montgomery to draw attention to the equal voting rights campaign. It was a mighty journey, met with hatred and attacks ranging from police beatings to tear gas, but still they marched — and the nation took notice, with President Lyndon B. Johnson signing into law the Voting Rights Act later that same year.

Today, half a century later, modern-day marches are making headlines and history of their own, including the protests in Ferguson, Mo., in the wake of Michael Brown’s shooting by a police officer. The cast of “Selma” has spoken out about the timeliness of the film given these tragedies and events — star David Oyelowo and director Ava DuVernay address that here — and they also insist on the importance of continuing the conversation about civil rights.

“This has happened a couple of times to me: People say, ‘Why do we need another civil rights film?'” Oprah, the film’s co-producer and one of its actresses, says in the above video. “I go, ‘When have you seen one?’… There hasn’t been one.”

Her “Selma” colleagues agree. Not only is the history itself important, but DuVernay also believes that these past events contain powerful lessons that remain relevant today, in Ferguson and across the country. “Selma” doesn’t open nationwide until January 9, but the film was screened in Ferguson prior to its release with this very clear intention in mind.

“We showed it to a group of just 50 activists there,” DuVernay says. “It was really to serve the people on the ground. Just to really offer the tactics that were used historically.”

But something monumental happened 10 minutes before the film was over.

“The Eric Garner ‘indecision’ came through,” DuVernay says, referencing a grand jury’s decision not to indict a New York City police officer in Garner’s choking death.

As the grand jury decision was handed down, the Ferguson audience began to react. “It was… very emotional,” DuVernay says. “It was an emotional moment for them, just trying to figure out how to move forward. How do we continue to make sure our voices are heard? How do we work for systemic change?”

She praises the activists that have been doing good work in the community, but adds that it’s crucial to continue the work and the conversations long after the media spotlight fades. “One of the things that ‘Selma’ shows is the strategy, the long-tail action that goes into these protests,” she explains. “They’re not to be dismissed because they’re not on TV anymore.”

The brave men and women of 1965 knew this, Oprah says, and truly understood the power of remaining peaceful, despite the intensity of their emotions or outrage.

“King, C.T. Vivian, John Lewis, Andrew Young — they understood from the beginning that you’re more powerful with your hands up, non-resisting, than you are throwing a Molotov cocktail,” Oprah says.

After 100 Days Away, This Air Force Airman Planned A Sweet Homecoming Surprise

Airports during the holidays are generally hellish. But on Friday, the Detroit Metro Airport was actually a rather heartwarming place to be.

Emma Trabue planned to surprise her fiancé, Air Force airman Jon Greko, at the airport when he returned from basic training last week after 100 days apart. The pair got engaged over the phone in October, but hadn’t seen each other since.

In the YouTube video description, Trabue’s sister explains that Emma had asked a family friend who works for Delta Air Lines to help her get a gateway pass so she could go through security and greet Greko at his gate.

Turns out, Greko was in on the plan and had his own surprise in store. As Emma waited at the gate holding a “Welcome Home A1C Greko” sign, passengers exiting her fiancé’s flight handed her red roses one by one. The last one off the plane? Greko, of course, who got down on one knee and properly proposed to her.

Watch the couple’s sweet reunion in the video above.

Zondervan 06909X All In – You Are One Decision Away From A Totally Different Life

Zondervan 06909X All In – You Are One Decision Away From A Totally Different Life

The Gospel costs nothing. You can't earn it or buy it. It can only be received as a free gift compliments of God's grace. It doesn't cost anything but it demands everything. It demands that we go 'all in ' a term that simply means placing all that you have into God's hands. Pushing it all in. And that's where we get stuck—spiritual no man's land. We're afraid that if we go all in that we might miss out on what this life has to offer. It's not true. The only thing you'll miss out on is everything God has to offer. And the good news is this – if you don't hold out on God God won't hold out on you. Readers will find Batterson's writing filled with his customary vivid contemporary illustrations as well as biblical characters like Shamgar and Elisha and Jonathan and. Judas.

No one has ever sacrificed anything for God. If you always get back more than you gave up have you sacrificed anything at all? The eternal reward always outweighs the temporal sacrifice. At the end of the day our greatest regret will be whatever we didn't gives back to God. What we didn't push back across the table to Him. Eternity will reveal that holding out is losing out.

The message of All In is simple: if Jesus is not Lord of all then Jesus is not Lord at all. It's all or nothing. It's now or never. Kneeling at the foot of cross of Christ and surrendering to His Lordship is a radical act of dethroning yourself and enthroning Christ as King. It's also an act of disowning yourself. Nothing belongs to you. Not even you.

Batterson writes "For many years I thought I was following Jesus. I wasn't. I had invited Jesus to follow me. I call it inverted Christianity. And it's a subtle form of selfishness that masquerades as spirituality. That's when I sold out and bought in. When did we start believing that the gospel is an insurance plan?

Tim McGraw Slaps Fan During Atlanta Concert, Woman Gets Taken Away By Security

Tim McGraw had an unusual, and uncomfortable, encounter with a fan at an Atlanta show last weekend. According to TMZ, while performing his song “Truck Yeah” at Aaron’s Amphitheatre at Lakewood on Sunday, July 13, McGraw slapped a female fan who got a little too handsy and aggressive.

In the video above (TMZ has another version of it as well), McGraw is seen standing in a sea of screaming fans with his ripped jeans, black tank top and signature cowboy hat. At about 44 seconds in, after bending down to sing with the crowd, McGraw tries to keep on walking when something holds him back. A moment later, security rushes over.

According to TMZ, a woman grabbed on to McGraw’s leg and ripped his jeans. In the video, he is visibly upset, gesturing “What the what” with his hands, before carrying on with the show. The woman was indeed taken away by security.

HuffPost has reached out to McGraw’s reps for comment and will update this story once one comes through. The singer hasn’t addressed the incident on Twitter, instead posting the following photo at the end of the night:

McGraw is hardly the first musician whose fans have gotten a little too close for comfort.

Back in February, a fan rushed up the stage as Taylor Swift performed in London’s O2 Arena. He was escorted off by security. Beyonce was pulled off stage by an overly excited fan in September 2013, during a concert in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Wiz Khalifa had a similar encounter in October 2013, when a shirtless man got up on stage while he performed in Florida. The man was immediately tackled by security.

Long-Lost Honeymoon Photos From 1939 Will Take Your Breath Away

The bride did not wear white, there was no online registry, and guests certainly didn’t use a wedding hashtag.

It was 1939; England was on the brink of World War II and Margaret and Denys Gardiner were simply in love. After their wedding, the giddy newlyweds drove around the English countryside for a few weeks before the world was catapulted into chaos.

Their honeymoon photos, thought to be lost for the last 75 years, were recently found by the couple’s grandson, Barney Britton, while cleaning out his grandmother’s attic. They were shot in color — a novelty at the time — using 35mm Agfacolor film.

The photos below tell the story of their honeymoon.

Margaret and Denys were married at the Church of the Holy Trinity in Hampstead, London in April 1939.

In August 1939, Margaret and Denys embarked on a road trip around England in their Morris Eight Convertible, along with their cat Edgar.

The road trip took them from London through Norfolk, Lincolnshire and Yorkshire. The couple, pictured here in Yorkshire, often camped on stops. You can see Edgar the cat below.

The trip was documented by the couple’s cousin-twice-removed, Eldred, who was an accomplished photographer. This is one of the better preserved slides — a photo of the Flamborough Cliffs in Yorkshire.

Margaret, aged 26, was trained as a nurse and worked in aid stations and hospitals during WWII. Here she is greeted by some local children during her honeymoon on a stop in either in Norfolk or Yorkshire.

Here the happy couple stops in the town of Shernbourne. This is one of the best preserved slides of the entire collection and a favorite of the couple’s grandson. The sign pictured was removed during WWII, possibly in wartime efforts to inconvenience the enemy. A replica now stands it its place.

Finally, the couple is seen here riding off into the sunset. Shortly after the trip ended, on September 1, 1939, Hitler and Germany invaded Poland. On September 3rd, Great Britain declared war on Germany.

Britton tells The Huffington Post that Denys did not fight in WWII. He suffered severe tuberculosis as a child and remained in England as part of the Home Guard.

Expected to die young, Denys proved many wrong and lived to be 79; he died in 1995. His wife, Margaret lived to be 100; she died in February of this year.

Waste in Focus: What America Throws Away (PHOTOS)

Photographer Peter Menzel captured America’s attention with his last photo project, What the World Eats, and his book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets. In that project, Menzel’s images powerfully portrayed differences in income, nutrition, and lifestyle.

His latest project, centering on what Americans across the country throw away and recycle, is no less powerful. The images that make up Waste in Focus feature eight American families surrounded by their weekly waste broken down into what is recycled and what goes to the landfill. The images make it impossible to deny how much waste some households generate, or that it is possible to reduce the amount of waste in our homes by making a few simple changes.

AND WHILE I’M AWAY…

… I’ll write home every day, and send all my loving to you.

2014-02-18-SULLIVAN.jpg

It’s the Beatles, of course. This was 1964. Writing home every day meant an actual piece of paper and an envelope, with address and stamp. A trip to the post box. Now, fifty years later, it would be email, text, or FaceTime. I still like paper…

I was thinking about this last night as I watched CBS’s “The Beatles: The Night That Changed America” with a big grin on my face throughout–much as I suppose I had that big grin back in 1964. I was all of 28 years old and living in Halifax, Nova Scotia, teaching at the apparently still thriving Halifax Grammar School. A couple of days before the February 9th Ed Sullivan show that marked the band’s first appearance in America, I had been approach by a student who’d asked me if I was planning to watch the Beatles on Sunday night. I’d never heard of them and, being still a somewhat convention-bound Englishman at the time, I was appalled when the student showed me pictures of the mop-haired quartet from Liverpool. Their hair alone was an outrageous affront to all that convention held sacred. What, I wondered–probably aloud–was the world coming to?

Still, given that my students were all so ecstatic, I did tune in to the show on the tiny black and white television set in the little apartment I shared with my wife, Elizabeth, and our grey cat, Plato. And like virtually everyone who watched that night, we were immediately seduced by the sheer joy the band managed to project beyond the screams of the largely teenage, predominantly female fans in the audience. I had imagined the end of Western culture. What I got was a cheerful challenge to it, a kind of cheeky irreverence that brought an irresistible smile to the face and good cheer to the heart.

What was it about the Beatles that was so powerful that it “changed America”? There were plenty of other bands in the British invasion of the time, but none of them was ever credited with the cultural influence of this one. In part, I think, it was the joy. A reviewer in today’s New York Times used the word “lark” and I think it’s a great choice. So much of what they did, both in that first appearance and in the years that followed, had the quality of a lark–a fun-filled adventure in which they followed, with a kind of innocent enthusiasm, wherever their curiosity might take them, whether in drugs, or rock ‘n’ roll, or spiritual inquiry. They kept moving gleefully on, discovering the new, and sharing the results of their adventure with the rest of the world. This boyish quality was the source of their attraction, and it proved irresistible while it lasted. We were all so disappointed when they finally grew up.

Still, last night’s show proved that the spirit was not lost. Certainly, the advances in the technology of performance and sound amplification have changed, and clips from the Beatles’ performance on the Ed Sullivan show that night make them look like that “little band” of which Paul McCartney spoke in an interview with Dave Letterman. Their movements look frankly stilted, their music melodic, yes, but a bit tinny by today’s standards. The professional musicians who came to acknowledge their heritage and pay tribute had the advantage of vastly enhanced stage production values, and they did a great job in rendering some of the great, unforgettable songs that were written and first performed by the Beatles.

But it was the two surviving Beatles who easily stole the show. Magnificent entertainers who have not lost the charm of their impressive charisma, Paul and Ringo offered a prolonged finale, each at first separately and finally together, that was every bit as thrilling and seductive as their first appearance in America, fifty years ago. They performed with easy mastery and good humor, entirely without guile, arrogance or pretension, connecting with their vast television audience as effortlessly as with those present at the concert. Their tribute to former band-mates John and George was low-key but heartfelt, sincere but unsentimental, entirely appropriate to the moment. Their enthusiasm was as infectious as ever, as was the goodwill they projected to an audience that embraced them with as much adulation as those teenage girls, many years ago… but without the screams.

A delightful show. I wouldn’t have missed it. And now that I have it recorded, well, I might even watch it again.

The Great Pubic Debate: ‘If You Don’t Like My Hair, Stay Away From My Vagina’ (VIDEO)

It’s a burning question: are we expected to shave down there or is okay to keep it all natural?

HuffPost Live posed this question to a few student columnists and found at Brown University in Rhode Island, it’s perfectly fine to go with the latter.

“At Brown, because students are really — really advocate feeling comfortable with your body, there’s less of a stigma in keeping your pubic hair the way it naturally is,” said Caroline Bologna, a Brown senior.

Bologna doesn’t need to ask around to know what other women at doing with their hair styling. There are several events each year at Brown that allow for a glimpse of how students are grooming, including naked yoga at Nudity in the Upspace and the annual naked donut run.

“You’d be surprised how many female students do not shave or wax down there,” Bologna said.

Emily Pittinos from the University of Michigan said she’s finding as she grows older, it’s less of an issue than say, when she was a senior in high school.

“Now that I’m more of an adult, grown up woman,” Pittinos said, “I feel like if you don’t like my hair, then stay away from my vagina.”

The Question That Never Goes Away

The Question That Never Goes Away

Some days, the news seems too much to bear. Yet another tsunami or earthquake or flood or fire or war atrocity. One more gun-toting madman stalking young people in idyllic Norway or moviegoers in Colorado or schoolchildren in Newtown, Connecticut. We turn off the news only to get a phone call about expectant parents with a stillborn baby, or a loved one whose cancer has returned. Really, God? we ask. This again? If we have faith in God, it gets shaken to the core. What was God doing in the moment when that tragedy could have been prevented? If we can’t trust God to keep our children safe or our loved ones from dying in agony, what can we trust God for? It is the question that never goes away. The Question is highlighted in Newtown, Connecticut, where at the scene of the elementary school murders an ambulance driver said, ‘All of us on the fire and ambulance corps are volunteers. I’ve seen some awful things, but we don’t train for something like this—nobody does.’ The Question raises its head again in Japan where a giant tsunami raced at a speed of 500 miles per hour toward shore and in the crushing force of its wave buckled roads, cracked bridges, and collapsed buildings. And 16,000 people died. But in a miraculous turn, an eighty-year-old grandmother and her teenage son were saved after nine days. In one more part of the world Yancey looks at the Question in the former Yugoslavia, in the city of Sarajevo, where a bloody civil war erupted and snipers shot and killed 11,000 countrymen, some women and children. One woman commented, ‘Winters were the worst. Without electricity we had no heat. I had a newborn baby, born in the midst of that hell. We chopped heirloom furniture with an axe.’ But then part of an answer came to the question. ‘On Christmas a neighbor brought me a priceless gift, a root system of a tree. He was a Muslim, didn’t even celebrate Christmas, yet he sacrificed to keep us warm.’ In his classic book Where Is God When It Hurts, Philip Yancey gave us

Debbie Wasserman Schultz On Bill Maher’s Obamacare Lie Claim: ‘Let Me Knock That Down Right Away’

Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) denounced the notion that President Barack Obama had lied about Americans’ ability to maintain their health insurance under Obamacare.

In a Friday appearance on HBO’s “Real Time With Bill Maher,” Wasserman Schultz batted down Maher’s suggestion that “the ship has sailed” on Obama’s “credibility.”

“It was not a lie, let’s just be very clear,” Wasserman Schultz said. “So let me knock that down right away. When the president and myself and every other Democrat that talked about that if you like your health care, you can keep it, that was referring to the overwhelming majority of Americans who had health care.”

During his Wednesday speech in Boston, Obama attempted to clarify the controversy surrounding a wave of cancellation notices received by employees of small businesses and individuals purchasing their own plans. The president argued that “you’re going to get a better deal.”

“If you’re getting one of these letters, just shop around in the new market place,” he said. “That’s what it’s for.”

Maher worked off that point, questioning whether the issue for Americans was one of truth over quality of the plans. Wasserman Schultz responded that the lie debate was “arguing over minutiae” — a point that Maher fired back at in disagreement.

“To a lot of Americans, it’s not minutiae and I think they’re insulted when you say that because they think it’s something important when the president doesn’t square up with them,” Maher said.
