Ghost of Tsushima’s Photo Mode Is the Best in Any Game Ever

One of the most incredible features of Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima is its photo mode. Not only is it flexible and packed full of great options, , it’s a snap to access: simply push Right on the D-pad and the action freezes, allowing you to line up that perfect shot. With the exception of some pre-rendered cutscenes, you can enter photo mode at any time. This functionality and ease of access let you capture incredible moments in the action, such as freezing a spray of blood mid-air as Jin’s sword finds its mark. But it’s also incredible for capturing landscapes, with a wide range of lens lengths and apertures available.

Basically, if there’s a type of photo you want to take, Ghost of Tsushima’s photo mode has an option for you. It is, in short, the best photo mode in a video game yet.

Before you read why it’s so great, take a look at this gallery of photos taken by IGN staff in-game:

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=ghost-of-tsushima-photo-mode-greatest-shots-by-ign-staff&captions=true”]

The Long and Short of It

Ghost of Tsushima’s photo mode’s enormous focal length range is one of the reasons it’s so great. On the wide end of the spectrum, you can shoot at 12mm, while the longest possible “lens” is a whopping 300mm. Photo mode lets you zoom in or out 1mm at a time, so you can get the focal length exactly where you want it to be.

Ghost of Tsushima also gives you control over aperture, or “F-Stop.” In a real camera, the aperture is the hole through which light travels before it reaches the sensor (or film). Measuring the aperture’s diameter is expressed through F-Stops. An f-stop of 1.4 is open wide, allowing light to pour into the camera, while an f-stop of 22 is a tiny, allowing only a pinpoint of light through to the sensor inside. That’s all well and good in real-life photography, but the f-stop in Ghost of Tsushima is utilized for its other use: depth of field. A wide-open aperture creates a very shallow depth of field, which is ideal for highlighting a single element in a composition, or for taking portraits with a soft bokeh-effect.

A larger aperture produces a much wider depth of field. Generally speaking, in both Ghost and in real life, you want a landscape shot to be wholly in focus, which calls for a tiny aperture. The aperture range in photo mode is ridiculous, way beyond anything you’d find in real-life, but this allows you to really narrow your point of focus to get the effect you might be after, making it super flexible. (In real life, focal length also plays heavily into depth of field, but isn’t as pronounced in Ghost of Tsushima).

Wide Open Spaces

Speaking of focal length, there are lots of real-world photography effects you can pull off thanks to its massive focal range. Smaller numbers work well for landscape photography: the smaller the number, the wider the shot. Since it’s all-digital, you don’t need to worry about edge distortion as you would in real life, so you can go all out with that 12mm shot and not lose details at the edges.

The immediate benefit to a long length like 100mm and above is it lets you zoom in on distant features. It’s a handy feature for wildlife photography in the real world, but you don’t really need to hide in the bushes to capture a great shot of one of Ghost of Tshushima’s many animals. But another effect of super long focal lengths is how they tend to “flatten” an image. Have you ever seen a shot of a full moon dominating a skyline? It was probably taken with a long-lens. When you “flatten” an image, features otherwise far apart lose the visual distance between them, making the frame look busier or closer together than it normally would. I took a shot of one of the graveyards in Ghost of Tshushima with a long focal length to illustrate this effect.

Time and Space

There are plenty of other options beyond just focal length and aperture to play around within Ghost of Tsushima’s photo mode to make every shot your own. You can freely move around in 3-dimensions to compose your shot, there are different filter effects you can try on, it allows you to tilt the camera for a “Dutch Angle” effect, and particle and weather effects are also adjustable. Time of day can be freely adjusted in photo mode without having any effect on the game, so if you want that gorgeous golden-hour light of the sunset, it’s as easy as moving a slider.

But perhaps the greatest asset to Ghost of Tsushima’s photography is the virtual landscape itself. Sucker Punch did such a great job laying the game out, it’s almost impossible to find a boring backdrop or ho-hum scene to snap a quick photo. Even if you aren’t familiar with compositional concepts like dynamic symmetry or the rule of thirds, the game is laid out to make nearly every angle feel cinematic. It’s astonishing in its beauty.

When combined with the ease of use and the many varied options available, Ghost of Tsushima’s photo mode is easily the best we’ve seen yet. Hopefully, more open-worlds take a cue from it when we move into even more lush environments of the next-gen.

Best Sci Fi Movies on Netflix Right Now (July 2020)

Are you looking for the best sci fi movies to stream on Netflix right now? The service itself is basically the stuff of science fiction — a huge repository of motion pictures, available to watch at the push of a button. Time travel to any era in cinema history (more or less)! It’s a magical, wonderful concept, and the only thing that would make it better is if they actually had all the movies you want. But that’s where we come in with our monthly updates on the best new movies on Netflix.

So let’s take a look at the newest releases in sci fi streaming on Netflix, including true classics of the genre like Back to the Future and E.T., as well as more recent hits like Ex Machina and Snowpiercer. This list features high-concept stories for fans of all kinds to watch. The newest additions to the list will be added at the top and marked with an asterisk.

Oh, and when you’re done here, be sure to also check out our list of the 100 Best Sci-Fi Movies Ever and what’s new to Netflix this month.

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=the-best-sci-fi-movies-on-netflix&captions=true”]

Best Movies on Netflix by Genre:

Please note: This list pertains to U.S. Netflix subscribers. Some titles may not currently be available on international platforms. This article is frequently amended to remove films no longer on Netflix and to include more sci-fi films that are now available on the service.

Cloud Atlas (2012)*

CLOUD ATLASWhile it’s a very different film from The Matrix, Cloud Atlas is no less an impressive accomplishment on the part of the Wachowski sisters. This sweeping epic features a strong ensemble cast playing multiple roles throughout time, as the plot stretches from the mid-19th century to mankind’s post-apocalyptic future. The story can be confusing on a first watch, but the lavish visuals and music make it well worth the effort.

Watch Cloud Atlas on Netflix.

E.T. the Extra Terrestrial (1982)

et-extra-terrestrialSteven Spielberg has consistently been churning out great work for decades, but he could have called it quits with E.T. and he’d still rank among the great American filmmakers. This timeless story of a boy and his newfound alien friend showcases Spielberg at his most whimsical and adventurous. If you’re a Stranger Things superfan who hasn’t gotten around to watching one of the main films that inspired that ’80s nostalgia-fest, now you have no excuse.

Watch E.T. the Extra Terrestrial on Netflix.

Back to the Future Trilogy

Back to the Future Part IIIGood news, ’80s kids – Netflix finally has the complete Back to the Future trilogy available to stream. No longer do we have to settle for just re-watching Back to the Future Part III. The original remains one of the greatest sci-fi movies ever made, in part because it worries less about the rules of time travel and more about having fun with Michael J. Fox’s lovable hero Marty McFly as he’s dragged three decades into the past. Neither sequel is quite as good, but both manage to add entertaining new wrinkles to the saga of Marty and Doc Brown.

Watch Back to the Future on Netflix.

The Matrix (1999)

ECcIHnqX4AA0dUbThe sequels may have dulled its appeal somewhat, but the original The Matrix remains a bona fide sci-fi classic. Nowhere outside of the anime realm have we seen such an effective blend of cyberpunk, martial arts and philosophy. The film stars Keanu Reeves in his most iconic role since Ted “Theodore” Logan, playing a solitary hacker who discovers his entire world is a digitized illusion and he may just be the messiah destined to save humanity from its machine oppressors.

Watch The Matrix on Netflix.

Minority Report (2002)

minorityreportHollywood has a long history of adapting Philip K. Dick’s science fiction novels, and Minority Report is still one of the best. We’d expect nothing less from director Steven Spielberg. This high-concept thriller stars Tom Cruise as a futuristic cop who relies on a trio of precognitive psychics to stop crimes before they happen. But when he’s accused of murder, Cruise’s John Anderton goes on the run (often literally) to prove his innocence.

Watch Minority Report on Netflix.

Inception (2010)

Inception-movieYou’d think Christopher Nolan would have a tough time following up The Dark Knight, but instead he gave us Inception. This high-concept sci-fi action movie unfolds in the realm of dreams, with Leonardo DiCaprio starring as Cobb, an international fugitive who orchestrates mental heists. Nolan’s singular talent for combining mind-bending storytelling with crowd-pleasing action and stunning imagery has never been more on display.

Read our Inception review or watch Inception on Netflix.

The Lobster (2015)

LobsterThe Lobster is far from the most approachable or mainstream-friendly film on this list, but we’d expect nothing less from director Yorgos Lanthimos. Fans of dystopian sci-fi hungry for something quirky and different will find exactly that in this darkly hilarious look at life in a world where singles have 45 days to either find a romantic partner or be transformed into an animal. Both Colin Farrell and Rachel Weisz deliver top-notch performances as budding lovers struggling to build a relationship against the backdrop of a very strange and oppressive world.

Read our The Lobster review or watch The Lobster on Netflix.

Snowpiercer (2013)

SnowpiercerSnowpiercer is easily one of the best comic book adaptations that most viewers don’t even realize is a comic book adaptation in the first place. Acclaimed South Korean director Bong Joon-ho made his English language debut here, chronicling a post-apocalyptic world where a handful of survivors (played by Chris Evans, John Hurt, Octavia Spencer and others) make their way through a frozen wasteland aboard an eternally moving train. Naturally, the class divide still exists in this terrible future, and the film focuses a great deal on contrasting the squalor of the rear cars with the decadent luxury of the train’s more privileged passengers.

Read our Snowpiercer review or watch Snowpiercer on Netflix.

Ex Machina (2015)

Ex MachinaOscar Isaac stars as a brilliant billionaire inventor, who invites one of his low-level peons, played by Domhnall Gleeson, to his secluded estate. But this isn’t a friendly visit. He’s actually here to test the humanity of Isaac’s new invention, a realistic robotic woman named Ava, played to perfection by Alicia Vikander. As they question the robot’s humanity, and what it means to be human, we gradually realize that what they really can’t figure out is the female mind. Brilliant performances and a thought-provoking screenplay make Ex Machina one of the best sci-fi films of the century so far.

Read our Ex Machina review or watch Ex Machina on Netflix.

Her (2013)

HerIn an extremely recognizable future, in which people live their lives through their phones and computers, and are so divorced from human intimacy that they have to hire people like Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix) to write their personal correspondence for them, a new operating system seems more human than human beings. So it is that Theodore connects to, and falls in love with an artificial intelligence named Samantha (voiced by Scarlett Johansson). As directed by Spike Jonze, Her examines the melancholy of human disconnection in an increasingly connected world, and the complex way that emotions and romance will evolve as technology exceeds our psychological understanding.

How We Choose the Best Sci Fi Movies on Netflix

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/11/29/5-ways-pop-culture-science-fiction-has-influenced-real-technology”]

Science fiction is a wide-ranging genre, and one that can sometimes be difficult to pin down. We try to focus on sci-fi movies that have a time-tested reputation like The Matrix, as well as those movies that scored well on aggregate sites like Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic. In some cases, we may pick more critically divisive movies like Under the Skin that we still feel are worth checking out. The one common thread is that all these movies explore the intersection of humanity and technology in a unique way.

Best Comedy Movies on Netflix Right Now (July 2020)

Are you looking for the best comedy movies to stream on Netflix right now? While the service often seems to be flooded with comedies, it’s not always clear which ones are funny and which will flat-out ruin your evening. We’ve scoured the vast expanse of the digital service (twice!) and come back with our picks for the best comedies Netflix has to offer, including recent hits like The Edge of Seventeen and Dolemite is My Name, as well as true classics like Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Groundhog Day. So read on for the hottest and funniest new comedy movies on Netflix! New additions to the list are marked with an asterisk.

Oh, and when you’re done here, be sure to also check out our list of the 25 Best Comedies Ever and what’s new to Netflix this month.

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=the-best-comedies-on-netflix-right-now&captions=true”]

Or follow these links for the best of other genres:

Please note: This list pertains to U.S. Netflix subscribers. Some titles may not currently be available on international platforms. This article is frequently amended to remove films no longer on Netflix, and to include more comedy films that are now available on the service.

Airplane! (1980)*

Airplane-movieThis disaster movie parody more than earns its place among the greatest comedies of all time. Airplane! is certainly one of the most quotable and meme-worthy movies ever made. The nonstop delivery of gags and banter, coupled with an all-around terrific cast that includes Leslie Nielsen, Robert Hays and Julie Hagerty, make for a winning formula that never gets old.

Watch Airplane! on Netflix.

Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story (2007)

Walk Hard - The Dewey Cox Story - 2007Walk Hard is a parody of the musical biopic genre in general and 2005’s Johnny Cash-focused Walk the Line in particular. But despite being a hilarious comedy, Walk Hard is also a genuinely better film than most of those it’s spoofing. The soundtrack is catchy, and star John C. Reilly delivers a genuinely affecting performance as the troubled superstar. This film, as much as any in Reilly’s career, shows his unique talent for straddling the line between slapstick comedy and heartfelt drama.

Read IGN’s Walk Hard review or watch Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story on Netflix.

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994)

ace venturaAce Ventura was one of three breakout movies for Jim Carrey in 1994, and for good reason. No one can match the zany energy Carrey brings to the screen, especially when it comes to this well-meaning but not particularly competent detective hero. And with Carrey finally getting back to basics in the recent Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie, now is a perfect time to revisit this early classic.

Watch Ace Ventura: Pet Detective on Netflix.

Dolemite Is My Name (2019)

Dolemite Is My Name Eddie Murphy delivers one of the best performances of his career in Dolemite Is My Name, a biopic about Dolemite creator Rudy Ray Moore. It’s basically the blaxploitation equivalent of Ed Wood, a comedy that lovingly celebrates an eccentric, off-kilter artist who was never truly appreciated in his own time. It’s also one of the most purely funny movies you’ll find on Netflix, and definitely one of the streaming service’s better original films.

Read our Dolemite Is My Name review or watch Dolemite Is My Name on Netflix.

The Edge of Seventeen (2016)

Edge of Seventeen (2) Coming-of-age teen comedies really are a dime a dozen, but the best ones always manage to rise above the fray. The Edge of Seventeen is easily one of the best examples of the genre in recent memory. It manages to both hearken back to classic ’80s comedies like The Breakfast Club while also being heartbreakingly authentic in its examination of a teen girl (the always excellent Hailee Steinfeld) dealing with serious issues.

Read our The Edge of Seventeen review or watch The Edge of Seventeen on Netflix.

Frances Ha (2012)

Frances Ha Lady Bird writer/director Greta Gerwig co-wrote and stars in Frances Ha, a bittersweet comedy about a young woman gradually coming to terms with the possibility that she won’t achieve her big dreams of becoming a professional dancer, and might need to do something else with her life. It’s a difficult lesson to contemplate, let alone learn the hard way, and yet – as directed by Marriage Story’s Noah Baumbach – the film never loses its sense of humor, no matter how self-deprecating it becomes.

Watch Frances Ha on Netflix.

Groundhog Day (1993)

Groundhog Day Between Caddyshack and Groundhog Day, Netflix is now home to two of the holy trinity of Bill Murray comedies. Groundhog Day marks one of Murray’s last mainstream comedy roles, as he plays a disgruntled weatherman trapped in a time loop that forces him to relive the same day in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania over and over again. That premise could just as easily form the basis of a horror movie, but Murray brings just the right amount of deadpan charm and maniacal glee to the film. It’s now rightfully regarded as one of the best comedies of the ’90s. And like Phil’s endless Groundhog Day, it only gets sweeter with age.

Watch Groundhog Day on Netflix.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

05 - Monty Python Monty Python and the Holy Grail is easily one of the silliest, funniest, and most inspired comedies ever made. The British sketch comedy troupe Monty Python took aim at the history of Britain and its most beloved cultural icon, chopped all the limbs off, and made more than a few pointed remarks about just how ridiculous humanity was in the past (and, by extension, just how ridiculous it still is). Graham Chapman stars as Arthur, tasked with locating the Holy Grail, a quest that sends him and his idiot knights on one absurd and unforgettable mission after another, to accomplish tasks like buying shrubberies, ruining arranged weddings and not having sex.

Watch Monty Python and the Holy Grail on Netflix.

The Lobster (2015)

06 - The Lobster This bizarre comedy from director Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favourite) stars Colin Farrell as a man who has to find a lifelong mate in 45 days… or he’ll be transformed into a lobster. It’s not even a unique problem: Everyone in this world has to find a romantic partner or risk being shuffled aside in The Lobster, which is a pretty damning take on a culture that enforces and judges based on unrealistic expectations for our social behavior and lifestyles. The whole movie plays like a Monty Python routine that got way out of hand, and that’s the whole point, showing just how absurd our values are once we take them to extremes.

Read our The Lobster review or watch The Lobster on Netflix.

Sleeping With Other People (2015)

08 - Sleeping With Other People Leslye Headland’s overlooked but brilliantly written romantic comedy Sleeping With Other People stars Jason Sudeikis and Alison Brie as people who decide that their sex drive has gotten them into trouble and decide to be platonic friends, even though they really, really, really want to get into bed together. Sudeikis and Brie have incredible chemistry, and the film’s sparkling dialogue is priceless.

Watch Sleeping With Other People on Netflix.

Goon (2011) and Goon: Last of the Enforcers (2016)

09 - Goon Goon is one of the best sports comedies in years, and surprisingly enough so is the sequel. Seann William Scott stars as a hockey player who can’t skate, and can’t score goals, but can take and dish out a punch better than anyone in the league. When he’s not brawling inside the ring, he’s figuring out his place in a world where getting hit in the face isn’t considered a valuable skill. Everyone in the cast is a delight, but Seann William Scott in particular has never been better.

Watch Goon and Goon: Last of the Enforcers on Netflix.

How We Choose the Best Comedy Movies on Netflix

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/02/18/7-great-comedies-that-critics-hated”] Netflix is full of amusing comedies, and we’ve narrowed down the list by trying to pick a mixture of recent hits like Dolemite Is My Name with classics like Monty Python and the Holy Grail. We also like to have a mix of broad favorites and more relatively esoteric picks like Frances Ha. And, of course, movies that fare well on aggregate sites like Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic are always a plus. The goal is to have a list that can make anyone laugh, regardless of tastes. Best Dramas on Netflix Right Now (July 2020)

Are you looking for the best dramas to stream on Netflix right now? Netflix has no shortage of films that try to hit you right in the feels. So let’s take a look at the best new releases in Netflix dramas, including many of the top recent films from 2019 and beyond. Our newest additions are marked with an asterisk. And when you’re done here, be sure to also check out our pick for the Best Drama Movie of 2019 or our list of what’s new to Netflix this month.

Please note: This list pertains to U.S. Netflix subscribers. Some titles may not currently be available on international platforms. This article is frequently amended to remove films no longer on Netflix, and to include more drama films that are now available on the service.

Mean Streets (1972)*

meanstreetsIf not quite Martin Scorsese’s first film, Mean Streets is the first to truly showcase his unique voice and incredible talent. Scorsese drew from his own life in New York’s Little Italy, weaving a bleak but beautifully rendered story about two struggling crooks played by Harvey Keitel and Robert De Niro. If you love Taxi Driver or Raging Bull, Mean Streets is what made them possible. And many Scorsese fans will argue this is still his crowning achievement.

Watch Mean Streets on Netflix.

Million Dollar Baby (2004)*

million dollar babyIt can be tough to leave a mark on the boxing movie subgenre, given how large a shadow classics like Rocky and Raging Bull cast. But leave it to Clint Eastwood and Hilary Swank to make an old formula feel fresh again. This story of an aged, embittered coach finding hope in a promising new pupil hits like a ton of bricks, thanks in no small part to the film’s ending. Million Dollar Baby wound up winning four Oscars, and they were well deserved.

Watch Million Dollar Baby on Netflix.

Zodiac (2007)

zodiacDavid Fincher is a true master of crime noir, regardless of whether or not his films happen to be based on real-world events. In this case, Fincher dramatizes the exploits of one of the most feared serial killers in American history. Zodiac isn’t flashy, rather relying on its intelligent script, the abilities of stars Jake Gylenhaal, Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr., and a powerful sense of mood to get its story across.

Read IGN’s Zodiac review or watch Zodiac on Netflix.

Taxi Driver (1976)

Taxi DriverThis classic Marin Scorsese/Robert De Niro collaboration is also currently back on Netflix. Taxi Driver sees De Niro bring to life one of his most iconic and disturbing characters ever – psychologically unstable cab driver Travis Bickle. No less an authority than Roger Ebert described Taxi Driver as one of the greatest films ever made. It’s not hyperbole.

Read IGN’s Taxi Driver review or Watch Taxi Driver on Netflix.

There Will Be Blood (2007)

02 - There Will Be BloodDaniel Day-Lewis has quite a knack for playing ambitious, obsessive egomaniacs who destroy everything and everyone around them in pursuit of perfection. There Will Be Blood may just be his crowning achievement in that regard. Directed by the always incredible Paul Thomas Anderson, this period piece casts Day-Lewis as an oil tycoon struggling to build his fortune during the oil boom of the early 20th century. Spoiler alert – wealth is not a pathway to happiness.

Read IGN’s There Will Be Blood review or watch There Will Be Blood on Netflix.

The Irishman (2019)

IrishmanThe Irishman is classic Martin Scorsese, as the legendary director reunites with frequent collaborators Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci (along with Scorsese newcomer Al Pacino) for an epic saga of crime, betrayal and loss. In this case, De Niro stars as hitman Frank Sheeran and Pacino plays infamous teamster boss Jimmy Hoffa. The film’s liberal use of de-aging tech is impressive, but what really makes The Irishman resonate is the way it plays like a moving end cap to Scorsese and De Niro’s long, fruitful partnership.

Read IGN’s The Irishman review or watch The Irishman on Netflix.

Marriage Story (2019)

04 - Marriage StoryNetflix ended 2019 with one of its best original dramas yet. Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson both deliver tour de force performances in this heartfelt look at a husband and wife grappling with a long-distance divorce. Thanks to director Noah Baumbach’s steadying hand, Marriage Story avoids being an emotionally manipulative tear-jerker, but rather an earnest drama that finds both humor and heartache in the midst of a collapsing relationship.

Read IGN’s Marriage Story review or watch Marriage Story on Netflix.

El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie (2019)

06 - El CaminoBreaking Bad was already one of the best reasons to subscribe to Netflix, with both the AMC series and its prequel, Better Call Saul, among the best TV dramas on the service. And now Netflix has become the exclusive home to El Camino, an epilogue movie that reveals the fate of Aaron Paul’s perpetually unlucky Jesse Pinkman. It’s a worthy companion to one of the best TV shows of all time.

Read IGN’s El Camino review or watch El Camino on Netflix.

Inglourious Basterds (2009)

07 - Inglourius BasterdsNetflix is rapidly turning into the go-to destination for Quentin Tarantino fans. Now the streaming service has added another essential Tarantino flick in the form of Inglourious Basterds. This WWII ensemble drama features a terrific cast including Brad Pitt, Mélanie Laurent, Diane Krueger, Eli Roth, Michael Fassbender, Daniel Brühl and a scene-stealing Cristoph Waltz. The film’s five interconnected acts weave a compelling story, and the film winds up offering a lot of insight into why the hyper-masculine world of Tarantino’s filmography is the way it is.

Read IGN’s Inglourius Basterds review or watch Inglourius Basterds on Netflix.

Burning (2018)

08 - BurningWhile it didn’t make much of a splash on the awards circuit, Burning is undoubtedly one of the best foreign language films of 2018. This South Korean drama, based on a short story by acclaimed author Haruki Mirakami, stars Yoo Ah-in, Steven Yeun, and Jeon Jong-seo as three friends who slowly become embroiled in an unsettling psychological mystery. The film is a slow burn, but one that steadily builds until it reaches a terrific payoff.

Watch Burning on Netflix.

Roma (2018)

09 - RomaAlfonso Cuaron’s new drama Roma may be the most acclaimed Netflix Original movie so far. It’s the spectacularly photographed tale of Cleo (newcomer Yalitza Aparicio), a young housekeeper in Mexico who works for a middle-class family and becomes pregnant at a tumultuous political time. Roma’s story may be straightforward but Cuaron amplifies every major plot point with an overtness and eccentricity that rivals Fellini.

Read IGN’s Roma review or watch Roma on Netflix.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2019)

10 - Buster ScruggsThe latest film from The Coen Brothers is a Netflix exclusive, and it’s one of their finest motion pictures. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is an anthology film, consisting of weird tales from the wild, unpredictable west. It’s perversely funny, especially in the film’s opening segment (featuring Tim Blake Nelson as a monstrous hero), but eventually Buster Scruggs settles into a melancholy, serious take on the Western tradition, telling one great story after another about the tragic inevitability and absurdity of death in its many forms.

Read IGN’s The Ballad of Buster Scruggs review or watch The Ballad of Buster Scruggs on Netflix.

A Most Violent Year (2014)

11 - Most Violent YearIn A Most Violent Year, Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain are just trying to be legitimate business people, but in the midst of a crime wave in New York City, when all their truck drivers are getting hijacked, that might not be possible. J.C. Chandor’s complex drama about moral seesawing gives Isaac, in particular, one of his very best performances (which is saying something), and offers a nuanced perspective on criminality that most movies could never get away with (if they even had the guts to try).

Watch A Most Violent Year on Netflix.

The Other Side of the Wind (2018)

12 - Other Side of the WindFew filmmakers had worse luck than Orson Welles, who spent decades struggling to get films made, only to often have the finished product mangled by studios, or to get screwed out of ever finishing them. One of his most notorious projects is The Other Side of the Wind, which starred acclaimed filmmakers John Huston and Peter Bogdanovich as two acclaimed filmmakers. The film completed principle photography in 1976 and it wasn’t finished until… this year. Netflix is releasing it for the very first time, and it’s an astounding motion picture, capturing all the rage and pomposity of a filmmaker just like Welles, desperately trying to make something meaningful but getting wrapped up instead in backstage frustrations like budget crises, balking producers, ego clashes, and merciless manipulations.

Read IGN’s The Other Side of the Wind review or watch The Other Side of The Wind on Netflix.

Mudbound (2017)

16 - MudboundDee Rees directs this rich and nuanced adaptation of Hillary Jordan’s novel, about a white family and a black family farming the same land, whose lives are vastly different only because of the color of their skin. Mudbound features impressive performances and gorgeous, earthy cinematography, and comes to depressing but vital conclusions about the impact racism has on people who have literally nothing else to prop up their egos.

Read IGN’s Mudbound review or watch Mudbound on Netflix.

My Life as a Zucchini (2016)

17 - ZucchiniThe mother of a neglected child dies, and the boy winds up in a home for abused, emotionally scarred kids. And yet somehow My Life as a Zucchini doesn’t seem bitter. It’s a sincere and honest stop-motion animated drama about the capacity children have to overcome strife and unite over shared emotional pain, and thanks in part to the charming character designs, it comes across as an ultimately hopeful, lovely tale.

Read IGN’s My Life as a Zucchini review or watch My Life as a Zucchini on Netflix.

How We Choose the Best Dramas on Netflix

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/09/30/the-irishman-review”]

While its content lineup is ever-changing, Netflix has always been a great source of film dramas. The goal is to spotlight a wide array of what’s available, including Oscar-winning classics like Taxi Driver and There Will Be Blood and key picks from the service’s growing lineup of original dramas. We’ve tried to represent many sub-genres here, from noirs to crime thrillers to historical dramas. The goal is to ensure there’s something for film buffs of all tastes.

The Games Industry on the Best Games of the Last Decade

Just over a decade ago, IGN ran two roundtable features; one that asked a broad panel of industry insiders to look back at the decade leading up to 2010 and one that charged them with prognosticating on what they thought gaming would be like in 2020. We recently revisited their 2020 predictions to see what the panel got right, what they got wrong, and what they were blindsided by – and the results were pretty interesting. Turns out a lot has changed in only ten years.

We’ve now pulled together a new panel of more than 30 industry veterans to recreate the same concept, starting out with a look back at the last decade. In a previous feature, our participants told us what they think have been the most important changes in the games industry, and now we’re moving on to the best games and most memorable experiences.

Please note that we haven’t included all responses, and some responses have been edited for length.

[poilib element=”accentDivider”]

In the first part of this feature, our roundtable members answer the question:

What was your favourite game of the last ten years and why?

Lee Mather, Game Director, F1 2019, Codemasters: There have been so many outstanding games over the last ten years, and all for very different reasons, be that innovative and fun gameplay, amazing characterisation, brilliant storytelling or groundbreaking technology. Based on that list, there’s one game which hits all of those areas and then some, and that’s GTAV. It’s hard to know where to start when it comes to why, but having such a vast and beautifully constructed lifelike playground, where the most believable and most obscure things could happen at any time instantly pulls you in. You can waste hours doing nothing more than driving round sightseeing. I’m also always a sucker for a good story and character driven game and GTAV hits both of those perfectly. You instantly get each of the characters, and their personality types and lifestyle decisions! The script writing is second to none and guaranteed to provoke a reaction. There’s a reason why it’s still going strong seven years after launch.

Atsushi Inaba, Chief Creative Officer, PlatinumGames (Bayonetta): GTAV and Monument Valley. GTAV feels like the ultimate version of an open-world game that is truly fun. Monument Valley was impactful because it opened a big change in an industry that was focused on AAA titles. I see it as one of the top titles that helped popularize the indie scene.

Masachika Kawata, Producer, Resident Evil series: I think the most impactful on a cultural level was Pokémon GO! for sure. I downloaded it while I was at San Diego Comic-Con in 2016, and the city was just full of people walking around catching Pokémon! A similar movement sprung up out of nowhere in Japan, and you would think there was a festival going on every time you walked by a park, due to the big crowds of people hanging around every public space playing the game. I was one of those people! And I was really glad to be a part of something which got the whole of society wrapped up in it – something I hadn’t felt for a while as a game fan.

As for my personal favourite game, that would have to be Bloodborne. It had that directness of concept and balanced challenge that is the signature of what we would now call the “Souls-like” genre. Capcom has found success with games in this genre before. Bloodborne was tough, challenging and fun, so even when I would die over and over and have to repeat the same section to try to progress, it was still enjoyable and I felt a great sense of accomplishment when I’d finally do it. That’s why it was my favourite game of the last decade.

J. Allen Brack, President, Blizzard Entertainment (World of Warcraft): [I]n the family, I’ll do a special callout and say I love Overwatch, but I do love all my children equally. Overwatch was new IP for us, created completely from the ground up, which advanced the class-based shooter genre with abilities and characters that you can truly love.

Outside of Blizzard, the game I enjoyed the most in the last ten years was probably Portal 2. Great gameplay, great writing, the story was excellent, I loved the co-op – the game was innovative. I’m currently playing Subnautica, which is a great story-based take on the survival space. I’m enjoying it a lot. On mobile, Monument Valley is my favorite game of the last decade, I really love it. For more of a puzzle/platformer type of game, I love Inside. It has an excellent mood and tone, and compelling puzzle gameplay.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/05/19/overwatch-review-2020-update”]

Overwatch has evolved significantly since launch.

David Gaider, Co-Founder and Creative Director, Summerfall Studios (Chorus): The Last of Us. It… really upbraided my snobbish belief that you needed an RPG to go really in-depth into a narrative. It, along with a few other games since like Horizon: Zero Dawn and Insomniac’s Spider-Man, has really upped the bar in terms of narrative presentation. They’re delivering on the promise of what interactive narrative is capable of.

Andy Sum, Director, Hipster Whale (Crossy Road): The Last of Us. The intro sequence left me speechless, and the narrative was surprising and engaging. Environments were beautiful to look at with plenty of vistas, while the level design and mechanics were interesting. Gun play was satisfying. And best of all, competitive multiplayer was unexpectedly deep and tactical. There was a lot of watching and waiting for your enemies, which was pretty unique for a competitive game.

I’ve put more hours into other games – Overwatch, Rainbow Six Siege – but The Last of Us was the most impactful.

Tanya X. Short, Co-Founder, Kitfox Games (Moon Hunters): 80 Days wins “#1 game that made me nervous to call myself a game designer anymore, in case someone ever compares what I make to that.” Its elegance and craft were so purposeful, so insightful, and the narrative and systems dovetailed so well, that I despaired existentially for awhile. I guess I really enjoy existential despair, because it’s hard to say if there’s any game I’ve liked more in the past ten years.[poilib element=”quoteBox” parameters=”excerpt=%2280%20Days%20wins%20’%231%20game%20that%20made%20me%20nervous%20to%20call%20myself%20a%20game%20designer%20anymore%2C%20in%20case%20someone%20ever%20compares%20what%20I%20make%20to%20that.’%22%20-%20Tanya%20X.%20Short%2C%20Kitfox%20Games”]

Viktor Bocan, Design Director, Warhorse Studios (Kingdom Come: Deliverance): Dark Souls. All of it, Bloodborne and Sekiro included. Not only because of the amazing game design and execution, but also for what it proved: that there can be hardcore games that don’t need to please everyone and don’t need to compromise for some illusionary “wider target group.” That you really can make a complicated and not easily approachable AAA game and there is a market for that.

Rebecca Ford, Live Operations and Community Director, Digital Extremes (Warframe): Not including Warframe – which is my most played game of all time – it has to be a tie between The Witcher 3 and Nier: Automata. I had the right amount of free time to dive in deep to each, and both worlds were beautiful in art and scope every step of the way. I can’t pick between them because they both represent the best of the past ten years of gaming – complete commitment to the art and science of game development. I also only like white-haired protagonists, apparently.

Saxs Persson, Creative Director, Minecraft franchise: The obvious answer for me is Minecraft, of course. I dropped everything to join the Mojang team about five years into Minecraft and I continue to be amazed at the impact the game is having every single day. For other games that I played, I’d say Inside had the biggest impression on me. It’s a masterpiece! I even played through the game again to find every Orb and get the special ending. We still discuss at home what the ending really means. That’s a good game that challenges and satisfies. Can’t wait to see what’s next from that team.

Marc Merrill, Co-Founder, Riot Games (League of Legends): If I can’t say League of Legends, then it has to be World of Warcraft among videogames. WoW still reigns supreme as the best in class MMO, although I have a strong personal preference for the earlier versions of the game. In regards to tabletop, Warhammer 40K takes the cake for me; 8th edition 40K has seen Games Workshop improve how they do live balance, simplify the rules to make the game less painful and this has helped spur the growth of the competitive scene.

Lars Janssen, Director of Studio Relations, Koch Media: This is a tough one… and I will cheat a little and name three games: World of Warcraft, Mass Effect 2, and Journey.

Obviously, World of Warcraft was released more than ten years ago but I haven’t spent more time in any other game in the last decade, so I think it deserves the trophy for connecting people and building long-lasting communities in an easily accessible way. For the Horde!

Mass Effect 2 is competing only with Final Fantasy VII for my personal “Best Action RPG of All Time” crown. I completely immersed myself into the story, felt with the characters, and enjoyed every minute of the game until the very end, craving for more.

Journey is very special to me as it showed how emotions can be triggered through sounds, music, and other players that share parts of your journey without the typical interaction possibilities.

Paul Sage, Creative Director, Borderlands 3: Tough question. Games are about mood, and the answer to this would vary depending on the day you ask. Let’s say some choices would be Mass Effect 2, Skyrim, God of War, The Last of Us, or Titanfall 2. Out of these, I will pick Mass Effect 2, based on my mood today. Mass Effect 2 grabs you with the soundtrack immediately. When you dive in, it is a fully realized universe with tons of depth and great characters. The story is incredibly interesting, and the gameplay was solid. But in the end for me, it was about my choices. Sometimes those choices were illusions, but other times they were really meaningful. It gave me a feeling of control and joy as a player with the high-quality trappings. Loved it.

Ville Heijari, CMO, Rovio (Angry Birds): I’ve probably clocked the most hours over a number of Angry Birds games, but I have to be honest and name Red Dead Redemption 2. For me, the game is simply the most perfect cinematic, escapist masterpiece, with just the right pacing, fascinating world with a surplus of detail, and gripping narrative. Having started playing games on Commodore 64 in the 80s, playing games like this can be mesmerising.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/10/25/red-dead-redemption-2-review”]

Red Dead Redemption 2 was a landmark release.

Denby Grace, Executive Producer, 2K (Mafia III): Red Dead Redemption 2, without a doubt. As a feat of engineering, design, and production, the scope and quality of that game is insane… it hurts my head to think about how that game must have come together. In terms of the story – a Western fantasy, the experience of being in a world I never wanted to leave – it’s simply a masterpiece.

An honourable mention goes out to Florence. That game tugged at me emotionally in a way I always wished, but didn’t know, a game could. Beautiful experience.

Jodie Azhar, Game Director, Teazelcat Games: While I’m much more drawn to relaxing games where I can take my time and the main mechanic isn’t fighting these days, I think the game I’ve put the most time into is Monster Hunter: World. I’ve been playing the series since Monster Hunter Freedom Unite came out in 2009, so seeing it grow in popularity in the West and come out with Monster Hunter: World, which so many of my friends picked up as their first Monster Hunter game, has been great.

It’s the only game I really play with other people, and while I miss the days of physically hanging out with friends and our PSPs, it’s nice to be able to go online and team up with people I know to take down a giant monster from the comforts of our own homes.

Naoki Yoshida, Producer and Director, Final Fantasy XIV: Monster Hunter: World. As I’m sure you’re aware, Monster Hunter is a well-known hunting action game series in Japan, but it did not make as much of an impact outside of Japan. However, I feel that by choosing PlayStation 4 as the platform and making the development team think outside the box, they managed to create a new Monster Hunter from scratch. I felt that this was a tremendously risky challenge, and I’d like to give my highest praise to the team that made this happen. I’ve played several hundreds of hours myself. For the same reason, I’d like to mention The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as well.

Ryozo Tsujimoto, Producer, Monster Hunter series: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The game world and gameplay were simply stunning. I always define a great game as being one you don’t want to get to the end of – in other words, you want to stay in that world as long as you can. Breath of the Wild made me feel that way.

Keith Schuler, Lead Mission Designer, Gearbox Software (Borderlands 3): The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. I felt like it was a return to what drew me into video gaming in the first place: rock-solid game mechanics against a backdrop of adventure, wonder, and beauty. Also, throwing chickens.

Takahisa Taura, Director, Astral Chain, PlatinumGames: That would be The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild… I was very impressed by its level and terrain design, which made it an engaging world to simply explore.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2017/04/28/zelda-breath-of-the-wild-46-tiny-mind-blowing-details”]

Even hundreds of hours in, there’s still stuff to discover in Breath of the Wild.

Sam Barlow, Founder, Drowning a Mermaid Productions (Telling Lies): The easy answer would be Zelda: Breath of the Wild. But statistically I give it to Gorogoa, a game that was my GOTY in several years thanks to its early demo release and my getting a subsequent early hands on. Gorogoa is magical and transformative. It’s the creation of a focused vision and does something that is so, so complex it is hard to imagine how it was ever created. It’s a new mechanic, a new interface. It seamlessly incorporates art, craft, story, and some straight-up puzzling. It’s everything I ever got out of Escher, or Kit Williams, or my favorite fairy tales – the magic paintbrush in particular. It made me gasp, it made my heart and my mind fill with joy. It’s such a singular thing that Jason Roberts is welcome to never make another game, just sit back and be content. Economics again, may suggest differently.

Ross Gowing, Game Director, Dirt Rally 2.0, Codemasters: Assuming I’m not allowed to go for DiRT Rally 2.0, I’d probably choose Far Cry 3. I sank so many hours into that game and bought it for Xbox 360 and then again for PS4 when the generations changed I enjoyed playing it that much! The storytelling and decision making twinned with the general open world chaos was exactly what I wanted at the time and was a real blast to play, twice.

Hideki Kamiya, Chief Game Designer, PlatinumGames (Bayonetta): I don’t really remember which games I played over the last ten years, but recently the Resident Evil 2 remake left a big impact on me. I was developing the original in around 1997, so it felt like a miracle to see that game revived on high-performance hardware with amazing polish more than 20 years later.

The only drawback of the game is that it’s too scary. I had to really do my best to complete both Leon and Claire’s scenario once each, but after that I was just too scared to go on. I want to replay the game, so I hope that Capcom will implement a mode that makes it more fun to play by making the zombies look cute.[poilib element=”quoteBox” parameters=”excerpt=%22Resident%20Evil%202%20remake%20left%20a%20big%20impact%20on%20me.%20I%20was%20developing%20the%20original%20in%20around%201997%2C%20so%20it%20felt%20like%20a%20miracle%20to%20see%20that%20game%20revived%20on%20high-performance%20hardware%20with%20amazing%20polish%20more%20than%2020%20years%20later.%22%20-%20Hideki%20Kamiya%2C%20PlatinumGames”]

Jeremiah Slaczka, Co-Founder and Creative Director, 5th Cell (Scribblenauts Unlimited): Obviously this is an impossible task. There’s been so many incredible and memorable games. But what captured my attention the most was PlayerUnknown’s BattleGrounds. It spawned a litany of copycats and arguably one of the biggest games of all times with Fortnite. It’s such a simple, yet powerful concept that was executed very well – even though it was very buggy. It was the first real shift in online shooters in many years.

Joe Neate, Executive Producer of Sea of Thieves, Rare: PUBG. This introduced an entirely new multiplayer genre with absolutely brilliant design to a massive audience. It’s so simple, yet so effective, and there was no comparable feeling like getting down to the final few players for the first time. I still vividly remember my first win. The tension, the excitement, and the fear. Absolutely phenomenal stuff. It’s a game where it’s pretty rare to win, but you always feel like you’ve got a chance. It’s also one where the purity of the core experience was always enough to tempt you back for another session, nothing to do with the progression systems or rewards. You just wanted to experience the adrenaline rush.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/01/05/playerunknowns-battlegrounds-review”]

PUBG was an instant classic.

Takashi Iizuka, Head of Sonic Team, SEGA (Sonic Forces): I have had so many favorite games from the last ten years that it is hard to narrow it down to just one. If I had to choose the most memorable one though, it would have to be Dragon Quest X, the first online RPG in the game’s series. I had played many online games for work before then, but it was the first MMORPG that I played in my personal time that I got invested in. I have some fond memories of chatting and going on quests with people I met through the game and playing until the early hours of the morning. It was a ton of fun.

Ed Beach, Civilization Franchise Lead Designer, Firaxis: I’m not sure this is going to hold up as my favorite game of the decade once I’ve had some more time to reflect on it, but I have to answer Death Stranding right now since I’m currently obsessed with it. I love the fact that this is a very immersive, story-driven game title that is all built around a backpacking simulator. I never thought of hiking as gameplay that would captivate me, but it has. I’m having a great time planning out my routes, choosing just the right equipment, and seeing the world change over time as shared structures get built and brought online. Events of the last few months have made it clear how much I’ve missed gatherings like that.

Gareth Wilson, Creative Director, Traveller’s Tales (The LEGO Movie 2 Videogame): Titanfall 2. An incredibly polished, thrilling single player campaign which has some of the best level design and shooter mechanics I’ve ever played, combined with a fantastic multiplayer.

Pim Holfve, CEO, Avalanche Studios Group (Rage 2): The 2010s had so many great games. I’m torn between Firewatch and theHunter: Call of the Wild, both succeeded in creating immersive wildlife experiences in radically different ways. I was mesmerized by Firewatch’s heavily stylized art direction and a compelling story. Of course, I’m partial when it comes to theHunter: Call of the Wild, but I think that the Expansive Worlds team has created a truly special experience that immerses players in what we believe is the best version of the great outdoors. Every time I put on my headphones and close my eyes, I can almost feel the breeze rustling through the leaves.

Kellee Santiago, Head of Developer Relations, Niantic, Inc. (Pokemon GO): Ack, I always have a hard time with these kinds of questions! There was, and continues to be, so much variety in games that it’s just so hard to pick one. So, I’m going to sort of side-step it and pick Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, because of the memories it has given me. You know, previously as a gamer, I would have really looked down on all of the options Nintendo gives in their games now to make it easy to play, or practically auto-play. I didn’t really get it. But in MK8D, it allowed my then four-year-old son and I to really play together for the first time. It was just magical. We could each play with settings that allowed us to be evenly matched. Everyone had a great time, and Nintendo enabled that!

Phil Harrison, Vice President and GM, Google (Stadia): I always think about games in particular moments. So probably the most fun that I’ve had playing a game in the last ten years has been playing Mario Kart with my kids, because it was an experience that I shared with my family. It wasn’t necessarily the best game, or the most amazing graphics, but simply the fact that it drew us in time and time again to all be on the couch enjoying it together.

I also kind of book-end the last ten years with the 3DS remake of Ocarina of Time just because it allowed me to play more of a game I loved. And then more recently, Breath of the Wild. Those are highlights of creativity in the industry and the beginning and end of the decade.

And then there’s… Inside from Playdead, the people who made Limbo. I finished and absolutely loved every minute of that game. I also really got into Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. I thought that the craft and the depth of the story and the characters there was incredibly impressive.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2016/06/30/inside-official-launch-trailer”]

Inside’s art direction, mood and pacing were superb.

Jamie Jackson, Chief Creative Officer, Mythical Games: This is tough! It’s actually impossible… but I gotta go with FIFA 17. It’s probably the game I’ve spent the most time with because of the friends I play with and the competition it brings out in us. One of my best friends and I have a running count of the actual games of FIFA we played each other for the last nine years – I play Barca, he plays Real Madrid. Of course, I’m winning!

Luc Duchaine, Executive Marketing Director, Ubisoft’s Canadian Studios: I loved the Batman series, Spider-Man, and God of War. I have to say that I played a lot of Tetris 99 on Switch and managed to win a couple of times; it’s the only Battle Royale in which I can really perform!

Tim Heaton, Studio Director, Creative Assembly and EVP Studios (Total War: Three Kingdoms): The most fun I had was from the Forza series, the one I played the most is Mini Metro, and the one I most respect is The Return of the Obra Dinn. Shout out to Tetris Effect, too. Oh, and Reigns. I played a lot of Street Fighter 2 on the Mega Drive Mini over Christmas, but I’m guessing that’s not allowed on the list.

Yoko Taro, Director, NieR: Automata: The PlayStation 3 remaster of the action adventure game Ico. I chose a remaster game because no game that piqued my interest more than Ico appeared during the past ten years.

Greg Street, VP of IP and Entertainment, Riot Games (League of Legends): I really struggle with “your favorite” questions. I get them all the time about my favorite LoL champion or favorite WoW expansion, but I just don’t approach life that way. But in the spirit of the question, here are ten games that I loved from the past ten years:

Dark Souls – Such great in-game storytelling and a difficulty system that just tells you that you need to be better. I’ve probably logged more hours in Bloodborne, which demands a more aggressive play style.

Into the Breach – I finally figured out that my frustration with rogue-likes is the randomness. Into the Breach doesn’t have any!

Slay the Spire – Such a perfect game. Despite so many different strategies and situations the game is remarkably well-balanced. It gives you a lot of chances to feel smart, which is what players want out of most games.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/01/25/slay-the-spire-review”]

Slay the Spire has near infinite replayability.

Horizon: Zero Dawn – While I love open-world games, they usually sacrifice good combat for more content. Not so for Horizon. Add in great writing, acting, and world-building and you get one of my favorite games ever.

Persona 5 – It’s not easy to get me to fall in love with characters so much that I never want the journey to end and wonder what the characters are doing today.

Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag – I felt like I was playing Sid Meier’s Pirates with 1000x more detail.

Hollow Knight – This is everything I want in a game. Tough combat, variable builds, a world to explore, a spooky narrative about fallen empires.

Dungeons and Dragons Edition 5 – Did you only mean video games? I’ve been a D&D fan for life, and likely owe my career to it. The new edition took the best parts of several old editions, and leveraged digital – especially streaming – to capture a new audience.

Gloomhaven – It’s very expensive, it’s very long. But the strategy feels really deep and it gets me to sit down at a table with friends in an era when expert matchmaking in most online games means that friends just tend to slow me down.

World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria – I think Lich King probably has the more epic story, but it’s older than ten years. Mists also had a tight focus on world building, beautiful content, a great story, and a bunch of features that changed WoW forever.

[poilib element=”accentDivider”]

And now for the second part, in which our roundtable members answer the question:

What was your favourite gaming or gaming-related experience of the last ten years and why?

Jodie Azhar, Game Director, Teazelcat Games: BAFTA introduced the Beyond Entertainment Award in the 2018 BAFTA Games Awards and this feels really significant to me. This award recognises games that educate, inspire, or have social impact, showing that games are not just for fun but can significantly impact players in positive ways.

The BAFTA Games Awards have always helped legitimise video games as an art form and this award goes a step further by recognising that they can be a source of good and be used to share information, ideas, cultures, and difficult topics in a way that’s accessible to a wide audience.

Sam Barlow, Founder, Drowning a Mermaid Productions (Telling Lies): Sailing the sandsea in Zelda: Skyward Sword! An incredible combination of dynamic music and a concept that was only truly explorable in a game context. Wow, that section was heartbreakingly poignant and beautiful. The whole timestone thing was an incredible mechanic that Nintendo totally explored to the nth degree and really should be talked about more. But in that one section they used it to make me feel something and it was the deepest hit of melancholy in a series that is already pretty good at scratching that particular itch.

Hideki Kamiya, Chief Game Designer, PlatinumGames (Bayonetta): The Nintendo Switch. Being able to play classics like Gradius and Ninja-kun: Adventure of Devil Castle on a high-performance mobile gaming device like that while lying in bed made me super happy. That being said, it was a real bummer that the Arcade Cabinet Mode of Space Harrier’s 3DS version, which simulated the movement of the original cabinet, was cut out of the Nintendo Switch version. That really sucked.

Lars Janssen, Director of Studio Relations, Koch Media: It was probably the Ghostbusters version of The Void in New York. Even though I’m very critical of VR in general, when my wife and I killed the Marshmallow Man together and the entire room smelled like the sugary good stuff afterwards, it was probably the most immersive experience I’ve ever had in gaming. I can only recommend experiencing a The Void installation for yourself if you get the chance.

J. Allen Brack, President, Blizzard Entertainment (World of Warcraft): I have two answers for this because I think they both represent things that I love the most about games.

The first are live experiences like Dreamscape and The Void – custom experiences with hardware that allow people to immerse themselves completely. These are incredible gaming experiences and I think a sign of what’s to come. If you think about this tech today, with the power of compound interest, what does this look like in five or ten years?  It’s hard to believe that this won’t be transformative entertainment in some way.

For the second answer, I’d like to relay a story of ultimate nerd-dom. Imagine a group of friends that have traveled to a far-off land, the land of Las Vegas, for a bachelor party. We’d rented rooms in Las Vegas, we had the fancy dinner, we’re sitting around, there’s wine being consumed, it’s Saturday night: what are we going to do? We’re going to hook up the laptop to the TV and watch StarCraft esports! We did that until 3am. That is one of my favorite gaming memories because it encompasses what I love about games most – that feeling of community and togetherness you get when you share your love for a game, even in unexpected places.

Paul Sage, Creative Director, Borderlands 3: Maybe Stan Lee’s cameo in Spider-Man? It is the most Stan Lee, I think – and he’d just recently passed. He looks at Peter and Mary Jane and says, “You two always were my favorites.” It was gently fourth wall-breaking, but super touching on a lot of levels for me. It felt genuine.

Greg Street, VP of IP and Entertainment, Riot Games (League of Legends): I’ll almost always answer World of Warcraft raiding. Having 40 (or even 25, or ten) players working together to overcome a really challenging problem is just not an experience you can capture in any game that isn’t an MMO and almost impossible to capture outside of a game.

Masachika Kawata, Producer, Resident Evil series: I’m sorry to name one of my own games, but Resident Evil 7 on PS VR was really a brand-new kind of experience for me and I loved it. During development, I tried out various other VR games and content as research, and I was amazed at how fresh the sensation of place was, how it hadn’t been done before in a game. I think the future of VR is further hardware evolution and working on making the player feel like they are even more in the game world.

Pim Holfve, CEO, Avalanche Studios Group (Rage 2): While VR still has some way to go, my first experience with an early prototype of Project Morpheus, which would later become PlayStation VR, was one of my favorite gaming moments of the last decade. I was completely blown away by how immersive it was, for being a prototype, and left the demo with great expectations.[poilib element=”quoteBox” parameters=”excerpt=%22While%20VR%20still%20has%20some%20way%20to%20go%2C%20my%20first%20experience%20with%20an%20early%20prototype%20of%20Project%20Morpheus…%20was%20one%20of%20my%20favorite%20gaming%20moments%20of%20the%20last%20decade.%22%20-%20Pim%20Holfve%2C%20Avalanche”]

Gareth Wilson, Creative Director, Traveller’s Tales (The LEGO Movie 2 Videogame): Using the Oculus Quest for the first time last year was a real highlight for me. It’s the first time I’ve used a VR device which really delivered on what VR could be: light, self-contained and portable to play anywhere with no wires!

Viktor Bocan, Design Director, Warhorse Studios (Kingdom Come: Deliverance): It would be shooting in VR games and the whole virtual reality thing. I really believe that this is the revolution. Control-wise it’s probably the biggest one since introducing a computer mouse into gaming. Suddenly you have much more control over your game: independent left hand, right hand and head so you can do many things at once. Some of this experience (shooting, archery, driving) is incomparable to what it was before. And there is no way back.

Kellee Santiago, Head of Developer Relations, Niantic, Inc. (Pokemon GO): Witnessing the launch of Pokémon GO! Seeing so many people, especially families with multiple generations, getting outside in their communities and sharing the game together. It was in the wake of Gamergate, and a period of time of intense divide in the gaming community. When Pokémon GO! came out it was such a beautiful reminder of what I love about games most – the ability to share joy and fun and create new memories with each other that are unique and meaningful.

Tanya X. Short, Co-Founder, Kitfox Games (Moon Hunters): Releasing Moon Hunters in 2016 was a disappointing affair, at first. The launch was rocky. Sales were bad; the team was disillusioned. But we held our launch party anyway (complete with drink tickets and a hired DJ, wow), even though none of us wanted to go, and… the support and encouragement we received from our friends and colleagues at that launch party really opened my eyes to why Kitfox makes games. This is a medium that can bring joy, and this is an industry that can be incredibly warm and supportive. It keeps me going, when things seem too hard. I know I’m not alone. Not really.

Naoki Yoshida, Producer and Director, Final Fantasy XIV: It’s been such a dramatic ten years for me, so I can only talk about my game for this question. For me, the last ten years was about how to re-launch the disaster that was the original FFXIV, and how to regain the trust of fans, players, and members of the media. After frantically developing and operating the renewed FFXIV, 2014 came along. During the first US Fan Festival that was held in Las Vegas, we announced the first expansion pack, Heavensward. I will never forget the excitement and cheer that erupted from the players in that moment.[poilib element=”quoteBox” parameters=”excerpt=%22For%20me%2C%20the%20last%20ten%20years%20was%20about%20how%20to%20re-launch%20the%20disaster%20that%20was%20the%20original%20FFXIV%2C%20and%20how%20to%20regain%20the%20trust%20of%20fans%2C%20players%20and%20members%20of%20the%20media.%22%20-%20Naoki%20Yoshida%2C%20Square%20Enix”]

Jeremiah Slaczka, Co-Founder and Creative Director, 5th Cell (Scribblenauts Unlimited): I’ve really enjoyed all the fan connectivity and interaction that spawned from YouTube Let’s Plays and Twitch streaming blowing up. I think that really helped propel new ideas and games to catch hold when they wouldn’t be able to prior to these platforms’ existence.

Ed Beach, Civilization Franchise Lead Designer, Firaxis: My trips to various PAX conferences have been experiences I will never forget. As a developer it is so easy to lose track of how large and passionate our audiences have become. It’s important to connect with our fans first-hand, see their enthusiasm, listen to their ideas, and share stories. Every time I come back from PAX I’m energized and want to elevate our games even further.

Yoshinori Kitase, Producer, Final Fantasy VII Remake: This might be slightly off-question, but… going around the world to promote the different Final Fantasy games I’ve been making for the last ten years is always a really great experience. Hearing feedback about the games from people from all sorts of different countries… of course, there are some really nice things they say about the games, [and] there are some opinions that I really don’t like hearing, but it’s still very important. It’s just a really valuable exercise, and I always feel really satisfied having done it.

Luc Duchaine, Executive Marketing Director, Ubisoft’s Canadian Studios: I’m obsessed with proximity with the players and having the chance to meet and discuss with them is priceless. I have attended tons of events over the past 20 years, but the rise of social media, streaming, and consumer events brought us closer to our players and this is fantastic. On For Honor, we hosted community workshops in the studio, get togethers in certain events, we had weekly live shows which are all great opportunities to discuss. Those meetings are super gratifying because you meet people who love what you do and humbling because they are so dedicated, it’s insane. I would recommend all game developers to go and meet players.

If I may, I would like to talk about a second one: esports. Gaming tournaments aren’t new. When I worked at Nintendo in the 90s, we organised tournaments and it was a blast. Now, those live events are pure entertainment. In 2014, I visited a DOTA event at the famous Madison Square Garden with my wife and it was amazing. I felt the same way I do when I go watch a hockey game and the same energy here in Quebec with the Six Invitational event.

Joe Neate, Executive Producer, Sea of Thieves, Rare: From a purely personal perspective, it has to be the growth of the community around Sea of Thieves, and to discover what the game means to so many people. I’m sure this will be echoed across so many games and communities, but the number of stories our players have shared with us about the impact this game has had on their lives has been humbling.

We talk a lot at Rare about why we do what we do, and the motivation of serving our players. To me, the stories we hear about friendships being formed, or maintained over long distances, to being a place people can just escape a bad day, or even meeting people and falling in love, are the thing that constantly feeds my motivation and drive. I absolutely love that people share these deeply personal stories with us, and we do our utmost to share them across the team. The gaming industry can have such a positive impact on people around the world, and it’s a privilege to be a small part of it.

Marc Merrill, Co-Founder, Riot Games (League of Legends): We’ve had world championship events at iconic venues around the world, so there have been some truly amazing moments, but this one is easy for me personally.

Last October with the League of Legends ten-year anniversary, we finally showed the world what other things we’d been working on the past ten years. We revealed a bunch of new games, but more importantly, we had a chance to re-engage both Rioters and players with what Riot is all about, trying to make impossible dreams come true for players. It was an uplifting, exciting, and emotional experience and will be forever a moment I look back on with pride and gratitude to our players for their continued support.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/05/14/legends-of-runeterra-review”]

One of Riot’s new games – the superb Legends of Runeterra.

Takashi Iizuka, Head of Sonic Team, SEGA (Sonic Forces): My favourite gaming-related experience of the decade was seeing the Sonic Movie get created. We had conversations about making a Sonic the Hedgehog movie over ten years ago, but it would always move forward and then get put on hold, then move forward and get put on hold, again and again. I am so happy that this year one of my dreams is finally coming true. Getting to work with the movie’s director, Jeff Fowler, and the many Hollywood movie staff on that project, while also living in Los Angeles, was an incredibly memorable and important experience for me.

Denby Grace, Executive Producer, 2K (Mafia III): I was very fortunate to get to work with Turtle Rock on Evolve. I have never had a better multiplayer gaming experience than when working on that title and playing games late into the night with the team here at 2K. When it came together and you had an experienced team against an experienced monster, the game delivered adrenaline like nothing I’ve ever experienced.

Keith Schuler, Lead Mission Designer, Gearbox Software (Borderlands 3): I’m going to cheat a little by answering something that technically started October 2009: the debut of the Borderlands series. For the past ten years, I’ve been a part of that series, and it’s amazing to see how it’s grown and what it’s become. There is no better feeling for a developer than for their game to be out there in the hands of gamers. That’s why we create, right? Prior to that, I’d spent nearly ten years working on Duke Nukem Forever, so…

Tim Heaton, Studio Director, Creative Assembly and EVP Studios (Total War: Three Kingdoms): My favourite gaming-related experience was making Alien: Isolation here at CA. Drama, intrigue, Hollywood moments, depressing lows and astonishing highs – and that was just making it. To have the actual game so positively received by players, and still highly regarded is a high point of my time at CA.

Lee Mather, Game Director, F1 2019, Codemasters: This is potentially a bit of a personal one to me; attending the Formula 1 Esports Final at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was something very special. It was special not just because of the location, but because it was a massive leap forward for competitive racing gaming. We didn’t start the series small, we came out of the gates with a high level production, with some of the best and most competitive racers competing in a series backed by Formula 1. Since then we’ve seen the series change people’s lives and expand the appeal of both Formula 1 as a sport and competitive gaming as a valid career and route into real world motorsport. Seeing the positive impact the series has had on so many people has been really inspiring.

Ville Heijari, CMO, Rovio (Angry Birds): At Rovio, we annually host a friends and family-style conference for employees, partners, and local industry guests in Helsinki, Finland. For the 2017 iteration of RovioCon, we invited Dong Nguyen, the creator of Flappy Bird as a guest speaker. Hearing his humble, honest, and unique story of creating the game and being completely taken by surprise by its success, and the subsequent conversations are something I find myself thinking about often. I guess that makes my interaction with Flappy Bird a favourite gaming moment of the last decade.

Jamie Jackson, Chief Creative Officer, Mythical Games: First was PUBG and how it did a great job of levelling the playing field for different skill bases of players. I find great enjoyment hanging with my friends and hiding for as long as I possibly can. My games in general are go, drop-in, loot, try not to get seen, hide like f–k, maybe kill someone, place top five, be happy. Rinse and repeat.

Second, esports. I still find it hard to call it a sport, but to see an entire industry emerge from something I have dedicated my life to growing and providing legitimate earning potential for players is incredibly fun to watch. And 15-year-old me is pissed it took so long.

Rebecca Ford, Live Operations and Community Director, Digital Extremes (Warframe): Even though I don’t play Fortnite, my favourite experience would have to be watching its emergence, dominance, and subsequent maintenance and battle for audiences. This (free) franchise came out of nowhere, and watching the industry and people react to it has been full of lessons. It firmly established the best (and worst) of influencer culture which devs and marketers rely on more and more. It firmly carved a model people want to imitate — in terms of developers looking for success, and players looking for big breaks.[poilib element=”quoteBox” parameters=”excerpt=%22Even%20though%20I%20don%E2%80%99t%20play%20Fortnite%2C%20my%20favourite%20experience%20would%20have%20to%20be%20watching%20its%20emergence%2C%20dominance%2C%20and%20subsequent%20maintenance%20and%20battle%20for%20audiences.%22%20-%20Rebecca%20Ford%2C%20Digital%20Extremes”]

Saxs Persson, Creative Director, Minecraft franchise: Easily my first night in Minecraft. I played the game for the first time with my son. We didn’t know much about Minecraft other than it had become popular really fast. We fooled around during the day, and then came the sunset! The sound of monsters nearby made us hastily dig a hole in the wall and barricade ourselves. From inside we watched through a hole in the ceiling as the night passed. The stars moved and, finally, the sky started to change color ever so slowly. When the sun finally rose over the horizon, I felt more relief than in any game I can remember. Just pure elation.

David Gaider, Co-Founder and Creative Director, Summerfall Studios (Chorus): My favorite gaming experience? Probably my discovery in 2018’s Spider-Man that traversal could actually be fun.

Ross Gowing, Game Director, Dirt Rally 2.0, Codemasters: Probably playing through Portal and Portal 2 – it blew my mind! I’m not a big player of puzzle games, so all of a sudden having to solve complex 3D puzzles complete with timing intricacies really made me think in different ways. Stephen Merchant’s VO in Portal 2 really added to the experience and made it more memorable too, I think I’d been watching him in Extras on TV recently at that point, so it created quite a surreal overlap.

Takahisa Taura, Director, Astral Chain, PlatinumGames: I’m really fond of the ability of the Nintendo Switch to allow the player to freely change playstyle between a home console and mobile device. It actually made me play more games.

The experience of playing a full-fledged VR game might have been even more exciting, but VR sickness has prevented me from actually enjoying those games, so that’s too bad.

Yoko Taro, Director, NieR: Automata: The Nintendo Switch remaster of the shooting game Ikaruga. I chose a remaster game because no game that piqued my interest more than when Ikaruga appeared.

Andy Sum, Director, Hipster Whale (Crossy Road): My favourite gaming experience was in DayZ, only because it was very memorable. Due to DayZ’s permadeath mechanic, the game would really build up tension in players. It could take hours or even days to build up your inventory from scavenging items around the map, and when you died you lost everything – hours of work gone. This sense of loss was what made surviving feel so satisfying, and beating other players feel so powerful. There were consequences.

Surprisingly, there were plenty of friendly players in the world, looking to help out others. One time, I spawned into the game surrounded by AI-controlled zombies facing certain doom. There was no way I was going to survive, when suddenly another player in a jeep pulled up next to me, killed all the zombies, and bandaged me up. In-game voice-chat allowed nearby players to talk to one another, so I said thank you and he kindly gave me a full kit of powerful weapons and items. He then invited me into his vehicle to drive around.

We bantered for a few minutes. We laughed. He told me that he’d been collecting items over multiple days and building up his character. Vehicles were especially rare and I’d never driven one in game, so I asked if I could have a go. We swapped seats and I drove us along a long road. DayZ had awful movement controls and physics. Vehicles were much worse. I turned a corner sharply, veering off the road and into a tree, crashing the jeep and killing both of us. We both lost all our progress, and he lost all of the items he had been collecting for days. I felt pure guilt, knowing that I had inflicted pain on another human being who had been so nice to me. It was as if I’d walked into a museum and accidentally knocked over a priceless sculpture.

I closed the game, walked outside, and never played again.

Can you think of any game that has ever made you feel truly guilty?

Protect Your Home With the Best Wireless Security Cameras

The best wireless security cameras have climbed their way to the top of the smart home chain. They’re among the most popular smart home devices right now, thanks to the many benefits they bring to the table. These security solutions are not only easier to install and more accessible to renters than their wired counterparts, but they’re also generally more affordable.

Before we delve into our list of the best wireless security cameras, there are a couple of things you must know. The “wireless” part refers specifically to the mode of transmission. These security cameras transmit security footage – more specifically, video and audio signal – without the use of a cable. That means that these cameras can either utilize a cable for power or be battery-powered. With that in mind, these are our top picks for the best wireless security cameras available right now, from ones that use a power cord to those that are truly wire-free.

TL;DR – These are the Best Wireless Security Cameras:

1. Wyze Cam V2

Best Wireless Security Camera

[poilib element=”commerceCta” json=”%7B%22image%22%3A%7B%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fassets1.ignimgs.com%2F2020%2F05%2F28%2Fwyze1590695045159.jpg%22%2C%22styleUrl%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fassets1.ignimgs.com%2F2020%2F05%2F28%2Fwyze1590695045159_%7Bsize%7D.jpg%22%2C%22id%22%3A%225ed01489e4b0db0dd70ea7e6%22%7D%2C%22url%22%3A%22http%3A%2F%2Fr.zdbb.net%2Fu%2Fbvqz%22%2C%22title%22%3A%22Wyze%20Cam%20 V2%22%2C%22store%22%3A%22Amazon%22%2C%22additionalInfo%22%3A%22%22%2C%22ourPick%22%3Afalse%7D”]

Because it uses a power cable, the Wyze Cam V2 is not completely wireless. However, that doesn’t stop it from beating the rest of the battery-powered offerings out there in price, reliability, features, and storage options. This is a solid and versatile security camera that’s incredibly feature-rich and one of the cheapest options out there.

Among the features we love are its 8x digital zoom for live streaming, CO2 and smoke alarm detection and notification, a magnetic base for effortless mounting, 2-way audio, timelapse recording, and its 3-axis design so you can tilt and turn it to whichever direction you desire without messing with the mount. Of course, it also boasts all the bare essentials like motion detection, alerts and notifications, as well as night vision of up to 30 feet. It’s also compatible with Alexa and Google Assistant, and it comes with free cloud storage that saves 12 second video clips for up to 14 days. All that for less than $ 30 – this one’s truly a bargain.

2. Wyze Cam Pan

Best Budget Wireless Security Camera

[poilib element=”commerceCta” json=”%7B%22image%22%3A%7B%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fassets1.ignimgs.com%2F2020%2F05%2F28%2Fwyze-pan1590695110139.jpg%22%2C%22styleUrl%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fassets1.ignimgs.com%2F2020%2F05%2F28%2Fwyze-pan1590695110139_%7Bsize%7D.jpg%22%2C%22id%22%3A%225ed014cae4b0db0dd70ea7e7%22%7D%2C%22url%22%3A%22http%3A%2F%2Fr.zdbb.net%2Fu%2Fbvr0%22%2C%22title%22%3A%22Wyze%20Cam%20Pan%22%2C%22store%22%3A%22Amazon%22%2C%22additionalInfo%22%3A%22%22%2C%22ourPick%22%3Afalse%7D”]

If Wyze Cam’s plethora of features still isn’t enough to convince you, then the Wyze Cam Pan’s feature set might be. It takes all the beloved features of the original model – from 2-way audio, night vision and live streaming to smart home integration and free cloud storage – and takes them up a level further. This wireless security camera has a bigger audio speaker, a wider 120-degree field-of-view, and much improved night vision.

Best of all, however, is the panning feature. The Wyze Cam Pan boasts a 360-degree rotation range, a 93-degree vertical tilting range, and high-speed panning at 110 degrees per second. Plus, not only does it have motion detection, but it can actually track motion within its field-of-view. So whether you’re trying to see what your pet is up to or hoping to get a glimpse of an intruder’s face, this camera will do the job.

3. Ring Spotlight Cam

Best for sounding the alarm

[poilib element=”commerceCta” json=”%7B%22image%22%3A%7B%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fassets1.ignimgs.com%2F2020%2F05%2F28%2Fring-spotlight1590695181708.jpg%22%2C%22styleUrl%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fassets1.ignimgs.com%2F2020%2F05%2F28%2Fring-spotlight1590695181708_%7Bsize%7D.jpg%22%2C%22id%22%3A%225ed01512e4b0ab1a33de6879%22%7D%2C%22url%22%3A%22http%3A%2F%2Fr.zdbb.net%2Fu%2Fbvr1%22%2C%22title%22%3A%22Ring%20Spotlight%20Cam%22%2C%22store%22%3A%22Amazon%22%2C%22additionalInfo%22%3A%22%22%2C%22ourPick%22%3Afalse%7D”]

This wireless security camera has a battery-powered model and a plug-in model, so you can take your pick depending on your preference. But, that isn’t the Ring Spotlight Cam’s best feature. Beyond the essential features like night vision, motion detection, motion-detection alerts, and live video streaming, it also boasts a couple of features that other top contenders don’t.

Short of hiring professional monitoring, the Ring Spotlight Cam is your best protection against would-be intruders, thanks to its motion-activated LED spotlights and its 110-decibel siren alarm. Not only can this security camera send you a notification every time it detects motion, it also turns its spotlights on. To top that off, it gives you the option to turn on its 110-decibel siren. With the spotlight and the siren, you should be able to sound the alarm if there’s an actual crime happening. Better yet, you would be able to scare off intruders before they even get close to committing a crime.

Unfortunately, those features do not come cheap. And, you have to pay an extra $ 3 a month to have the ability to store your videos in cloud storage. But, it still beats having to pay for a professional security service.

4. Ring Stick Up Cam Solar

Best for energy-saving outdoor security

[poilib element=”commerceCta” json=”%7B%22image%22%3A%7B%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fassets1.ignimgs.com%2F2020%2F05%2F28%2Fring-stick-up-cam1590695254757.jpg%22%2C%22styleUrl%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fassets1.ignimgs.com%2F2020%2F05%2F28%2Fring-stick-up-cam1590695254757_%7Bsize%7D.jpg%22%2C%22id%22%3A%225ed0155ae4b0ab1a33de687a%22%7D%2C%22url%22%3A%22http%3A%2F%2Fr.zdbb.net%2Fu%2Fbvr2%22%2C%22title%22%3A%22Ring%20Stick-Up%20Cam%20Solar%22%2C%22store%22%3A%22Amazon%22%2C%22additionalInfo%22%3A%22%22%2C%22ourPick%22%3Afalse%7D”]

With a range of power source options, the Ring Stick Up Cam is great for both indoor and outdoor use. This wireless security camera has rechargeable battery-powered, plug-in and solar-powered models, giving consumers a variety of options to choose from. Those who prefer to use sustainable energy sources, however, will love the Ring Stick Up Cam Solar. It comes with its own solar panel as well as backup power bank so it can stay charged, rain or shine. So not only is it money-saving at $ 150, but it’s energy-saving as well.

As far as its security camera features, it boasts night vision, two-way audio, real-time notifications, live view, and effortless installation. Since it’s an indoor/outdoor camera, it also has weather resistance, and can withstand extreme temperatures of down to -5°F and up to 122°F. For convenience, it is compatible with Alexa-enabled devices, Ring devices and even certain smart locks.

5. Blink XT2 Outdoor/Indoor Smart Security Camera

Best indoor/outdoor security camera

[poilib element=”commerceCta” json=”%7B%22image%22%3A%7B%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fassets1.ignimgs.com%2F2020%2F05%2F28%2Fblink1590695316666.jpg%22%2C%22styleUrl%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fassets1.ignimgs.com%2F2020%2F05%2F28%2Fblink1590695316666_%7Bsize%7D.jpg%22%2C%22id%22%3A%225ed01599e4b0db0dd70ea7e8%22%7D%2C%22url%22%3A%22http%3A%2F%2Fr.zdbb.net%2Fu%2Fbvr3%22%2C%22title%22%3A%22Blink%20XT2%22%2C%22store%22%3A%22Amazon%22%2C%22additionalInfo%22%3A%22%22%2C%22ourPick%22%3Afalse%7D”]

For a truly wire-free security camera that’s perfect for both indoor and outdoor installations, nothing beats Blink XT2 Outdoor/Indoor Smart Security Camera. This svelte wireless security camera promises a two-year battery life so you won’t have to constantly worry about it running out of juice at the most crucial moments. And, unlike some of its rivals, every unit comes with free cloud storage so you can save hundreds of clips stored up to a year without committing to a monthly service fee.

Of course, as an outdoor camera, it features weather-proofing as well – IP65-rated weather resistance, in fact. It offers temperature monitoring as well. Among its other mention-worthy features include motion-activated instant-on recording, live-streaming, alerts and notifications, 2-way audio, and Alexa-compatibility. Perhaps the best part of this camera, however, is that it gives you all those features and cloud storage for only $ 99 a pop. And, it gets even cheaper when you buy the bundles.

6. Arlo Pro 3

Best 2K resolution security camera

[poilib element=”commerceCta” json=”%7B%22image%22%3A%7B%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fassets1.ignimgs.com%2F2020%2F05%2F28%2Farlo-pro-31590695385243.jpg%22%2C%22styleUrl%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fassets1.ignimgs.com%2F2020%2F05%2F28%2Farlo-pro-31590695385243_%7Bsize%7D.jpg%22%2C%22id%22%3A%225ed015dde4b0ab1a33de687b%22%7D%2C%22url%22%3A%22http%3A%2F%2Fr.zdbb.net%2Fu%2Fbvr4%22%2C%22title%22%3A%22Arlo%20Pro%203%22%2C%22store%22%3A%22Amazon%22%2C%22additionalInfo%22%3A%22%22%2C%22ourPick%22%3Afalse%7D”]

If you’ve got quite a bit of cash to spend on a wireless security camera, or you need one with a higher than 1080p resolution, you’d want to consider the Arlo Pro 3. This is one of the most highly-rated wireless security camera systems on the market right now, with great features and a terrific set of extra accessories to match.

This premium camera comes with premium features like a 160-degree viewing angle, 2K resolution with HDR for crisper images, color night vision, a spotlight, 12x digital zoom, and a built-in siren. It also has a magnetic mount and a magnetic charge cable. That’s on top of the usual 2-way audio, motion detector, auto-zooming and tracking, and live streaming features. Unfortunately, you do have to pay monthly for cloud storage access and intelligent alerts, which are incredibly vital. However, if you’re willing to pay $ 500 for a wireless security camera system, then there’s no doubt you can afford the monthly subscription as well.

7. TP-Link Kasa Spot Indoor Camera

Best underdog

[poilib element=”commerceCta” json=”%7B%22image%22%3A%7B%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fassets1.ignimgs.com%2F2020%2F05%2F28%2Fkasa-spot1590695452447.jpg%22%2C%22styleUrl%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fassets1.ignimgs.com%2F2020%2F05%2F28%2Fkasa-spot1590695452447_%7Bsize%7D.jpg%22%2C%22id%22%3A%225ed01620e4b0ab1a33de687c%22%7D%2C%22url%22%3A%22http%3A%2F%2Fr.zdbb.net%2Fu%2Fbvr5%22%2C%22title%22%3A%22Kasa%20Spot%22%2C%22store%22%3A%22Amazon%22%2C%22additionalInfo%22%3A%22%22%2C%22ourPick%22%3Afalse%7D”]

The TP-Link Kasa Spot Indoor Camera may not boast unique or premium features that set it apart from the competition. It has all the features that other wireless security cameras offer: a 1080p resolution, Alexa and Google Assistant compatibility, two-way audio, night vision up to 30 feet, and live streaming. However, it offers uniquely offers instant activity alerts without the cloud subscription. Users can also program up to 4 customizable zones so it can focus more on areas in your home that matter most.

Most importantly, it’s simply reliable. Made by TP-Link, a trusted name in routers and computer networking. To protect your privacy, your video streams are protected with 128-bit AES encryption straight from the camera so your recordings are safely transmitted as if it was piped through a VPN. The only thing is, you’d have to pay for the cloud subscription to save the full recordings for up to 30 days.

8. eufyCam 2C

Best for HomeKit ecosystems

[poilib element=”commerceCta” json=”%7B%22image%22%3A%7B%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fassets1.ignimgs.com%2F2020%2F05%2F28%2Feufy1590694930209.jpg%22%2C%22styleUrl%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fassets1.ignimgs.com%2F2020%2F05%2F28%2Feufy1590694930209_%7Bsize%7D.jpg%22%2C%22id%22%3A%225ed01416e4b0ab1a33de6878%22%7D%2C%22url%22%3A%22http%3A%2F%2Fr.zdbb.net%2Fu%2Fbvqy%22%2C%22title%22%3A%22eufyCam%202C%22%2C%22store%22%3A%22Amazon%22%2C%22additionalInfo%22%3A%22%22%2C%22ourPick%22%3Afalse%7D”]

While eufyCam 2C is one of the most expensive wireless security cameras on this list, it’s worth checking out, especially if you’re invested in Apple’s HomeKit ecosystem. Highly compatible with HomeKit, this completely wire-free system also offers special features like human detection technology that distinguishes humans from animals and objects, only sending alerts when it’s detecting an actual person, and local-only storage that lets you store up to 3 months of footage, forgoing the need for a cloud subscription.

The eufyCam 2C also touts a 135-degree diagonal field of view, a battery life that lasts 6 months on a single charge, an IP67 weather-proof rating that allows it to survive inclement weather, a built-in spotlight, and an AES-128 data encryption to protect your clips and footage from prying eyes. For a 2-camera kit, this will set you back more than $ 200, so it’s certainly not cheap. However, for all those incredible features, it’s definitely worth saving for.

What to look for when buying the best wireless security camera

Picking the best wireless security camera for you and your home isn’t hard. These cameras, after all, have quite a few things in common that kind of make your buying decision easier. They’re all easy to install. They all have some sort of smart home integration, whether it’s with Alexa, Google Assistant or HomeKit. And, they all offer live streaming, alerts and notifications, remote access, and night vision.

If you’re not too particular, any of these excellent security cameras above should be able to handle your home security needs – as long as they’re within your price range. Still, it isn’t as straightforward as you might think, especially if you have specific features you want to check off your list.

Resolution

Most of the best wireless security cameras that are currently on the market have a resolution of 1080p. That’s pretty much the standard these days, although there are also a few options out there that only have a 720p resolution. 1080p should be sharp enough for your home security needs. However, if you want something sharper, there’s a small number of 1440p resolution cameras as well, albeit perhaps at a much higher price than their 1080p counterparts.

Storage

Many wireless security cameras store your security footage in a cloud, transmitting all of the captured video and audio files to an offsite or remote storage location that you can access via an app. This keeps your video footage secure and protected, especially from intruders looking to remove any evidence of their crime.

Unfortunately, while some manufacturers offer this cloud storage service for free and others offer theirs for a free-yet-limited use, there’s also quite a few that force you to pay for a monthly subscription. Without that subscription, not only are you unable to review past recordings, but you’re also losing some important features like real-time alerts. Luckily, you’re more likely to pay $ 3 to $ 5 than $ 50 a month for these subscriptions.

If cloud storage isn’t something you’re comfortable with, there are also a small number of wireless security cameras that come with MicroSD cards for local storage.

Power source

As we mentioned earlier, the word “wireless” in wireless security cameras refer more to the mode these devices use to transmit your video and audio signals, than to whether or not they’re completely cable-free. That means that some wireless security cameras still use a cable for power.

Unfortunately, these cameras are affected by power failures and outages, which is why many people prefer wire-free battery-powered security cameras instead. These come with rechargeable batteries that last anywhere from three months to two years on a single charge.

There are also a handful of wireless security cameras that use solar power, and they’re a favorite among the more sustainability-conscious consumers.

Indoor or outdoor use

Although some of these cameras are designed for both indoor and outdoor use, specific ones are indoor only. This is something you should double-check, especially if you’re living in an area with extreme weather. You wouldn’t want your $ 150 indoor security camera to stop working after a couple of months because it got snowed on the night before.

Other security features

Apart from the basic security features that all these cameras have in common like night vision, alerts and notifications, live streaming, and 2-way audio, there are some bells and whistles that only a handful of them offer. Examples of these extra features include built-in spotlights, a built-in siren, panning, and military-grade data encryption.

While many of these special features probably won’t come in handy in normal, everyday situations, they’re still worth looking into, especially if they don’t really cost you that much more to have.

The Best Superhero Director’s Cuts You Can Stream Now

Given the Mother Box-size news that Zack Snyder’s Justice League (the recut version of the 2017 movie) will be airing on HBO Max in 2021, we’ve compiled a quick list of a few other comic book films (a few of which are also Zack Snyder’s) with alternate Director’s Cuts that you can stream right now.

The following films are instances of the extended cut, to varying degrees, being better than the theatrical release. It’s not every alternate take on every superhero film. You’re not going to find the Editor’s Cut of Spider-Man 3 on here (though you can seek it out on Amazon, Google Play, and Vudu). This is a rundown of Director’s Cuts that improve upon the product, not merely extend the runtime of something rudimentary or rotten.

If you’re looking for a more in-depth look at the new Justice League coming to HBO Max, here’s a full history of the Snyder Cut – plus, the Justice League cast reacting to the huge news!

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=best-superhero-directors-cuts-you-can-stream-now&captions=true”]

[poilib element=”accentDivider”]

Superman II – The Richard Donner Cut

superman-the-donner-cut-stillAfter shooting about three-quarters of the script, Superman director Richard Donner was removed from the sequel after he severely clashed with producers over the tone of the film. Donner was advocating for a darker and moodier Superman while the studio wanted to ramp up the camp. Richard Lester (who would immediately go on to direct Superman III) was brought in and promptly reshot almost the entire movie. The Donner footage became the stuff of cult legend for Man of Steel fans, and finally saw the light of day when Warner Bros. released it – edited together with some of the Lester scenes for continuity – as a complete alternate version of the film back in 2006. Despite its unfinished nature, it’s regarded by many as the superior incarnation of the movie.

Available to rent and/or buy on Amazon, Google Play, Vudu, DirecTV, and iTunes/Apple.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – Extended Cut or Ultimate Edition

batman-v-superman-3-new-promotional-images_67tx.h720In Batman v Superman’s extended cut, R-rated violence reins supreme while a ton of axed story moments and character beats find their way back into the mega-mix. Lois Lane becomes a more pivotal character when Lex Luthor’s plot to frame Superman in explored more thoroughly. We see Superman asking Gotham citizens about Batman, Lex communicating with Steppenwolf, Jena Malone’s Jenet Klyburn, and learn that Lois’ “camera man,” who met his gruesome end in Africa, was Jimmy Olsen. Despite Batman v Superman’s lengthy theatrical runtime, many fans still felt there were too many plot points missing. This cut fills all that in.

Available to rent and/or buy on Amazon, Vudu, YouTube, Google Play, Sling TV, Redbox, and iTunes/Apple.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/04/10/the-dc-movie-timeline-in-chronological-order”]

Daredevil – Director’s Cut

84c486dc048d04f5f745fa9742dac26f_3x3While 2003’s Daredevil will always have its flaws, no matter how much footage you add to it, the 2004 release of the Director’s Cut is widely regarded as being better simply because it shows Matt Murdock being a lawyer, engrossed in a trial where he’s defending a wrongly-accused man (played by Coolio) whose case has big Kingpin ramifications. With 30 minutes of new footage, Matt feels like a more well-rounded character, the love story between him and Elektra actually plays better, and the entire film feels like it has a better though line.

Available to rent and/or buy on Amazon, Google Play, Vudu, YouTube, Cinemax Go, DirecTV, Redbox, and iTunes/Apple.

Sin City – Recut, Extended, and Unrated Cut

saRobert Rodriguez’s “Extended and Uncut” version of Sin City took his dazzling, uber-violent adaptation of Frank Miller’s graphic novel and added a bunch of new scenes to the sordid saga – while also fully separating each of the stories into their own mini-movie (instead of weaving them into each other). There’s a case to be made for either version though fans who’d like to experience the three main tales (plus the Josh Hartnett hitman scene) separately, with extra storyline moments sprinkled in, will definitely love this reshuffling of the deck.

Available to rent and/or buy on Amazon, Google Play, and iTunes/Apple.

Watchmen – Directors Cut and Ultimate Cut

A3 poster:Layout 1Watchmen, for the longest time, was widely regarded as unadaptable simply because the graphic novel was so dense with story. With that said, it’s no surprise that Zack Snyder’s ambitious 2009 film had a ton of footage shoved to the sidelines. Hence, the “Director’s Cut” and the “Ultimate Cut” are both available to check out. The Director’s Cut, which Snyder himself prefers to the Ultimate Cut, has 20 minutes of added footage that help flesh out the complex, labyrinthine story with extra plot details and, sometimes, longer scenes. The Ultimate Cut has all that plus the addition of the animated short film “Tales of the Black Freighter” (with Gerard Butler’s voice) mixed into the movie in the way the comics used the Freighter story. Snyder has said though that he never created moments within the film that felt like natural Freighter breaks so the intermittent splicing in of the animation isn’t the most ideal version to watch.

Available to rent and/or buy on Amazon, Google Play, and Vudu.

X-Men: Days of Future Past – Rogue Cut

e85ebf29237ac19964533e0d0fef7b953c96055cf19004615523f429d9f2d2ceThe “Rogue Cut” of Days of Future Past is just what it sounds like. It’s the acclaimed X-Men film with an entire Rogue subplot — featuring the return of Anna Paquin to the franchise — added back in. Instead of Rogue just curiously appearing briefly toward the end of the film, she’s given a whole story as Magneto and Iceman rescue her from being held captive in the in the old X-Mansion. Seventeen minutes of film are added back in as we also see a side story involving Beast and Mystique along with bits and pieces that just help flesh the film out a bit more. It’s a cool instance of an already great movie being made better by having its cruelly shaved parts put back in.

Available to rent and/or buy on Amazon, Google Play, Vudu, and Redbox.

The Wolverine – Unleashed Extended Edition

TnkUz48scOzUcOf-yig-OJ9g3hITJh9DBpZe8lmdVCIThis R-rated cut (snikt!) of 2013’s The Wolverine, from Logan’s James Mangold, adds more carnage and more F-bombs to what, at the time, stood as the best X-Film since X2. It’s a bloodier, more savage affair complete with additional scenes, extended ninja fights, and buckets more blood. This was the first unrated, uncut special edition in the X-franchise, giving fans a rabidly more violent Wolvie.

Available to rent and/or buy on Amazon, Google Play, and Vudu.

Best Horror TV Shows on Netflix Right Now (May 2020)

Are you looking for the best horror TV shows on Netflix right now? It can be hard to dig through the service to find what’s worth watching. But that’s where we’ve got you covered with our monthly updates on the best new series on the streamer, from The Haunting of Hill House to Chilling Adventures of Sabrina to The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell. This lineup includes many of the top recent horror series from 2020, 2019, and beyond, as well as several all-time classics. Who says it has to be Halloween to watch these shows?!

When you’re done here, be sure to also check out our list of the 100 Best Horror Movies Ever and what’s new to Netflix this month.

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=the-best-horror-tv-shows-on-netflix-right-now&captions=true”]

Best Movies on Netflix by Genre:

Please note: This list pertains to U.S. Netflix subscribers. Some titles may not currently be available on international platforms. This article is frequently amended to remove shows no longer streaming on Netflix, and to include more horror TV series that are now available on the service.

Dracula

01 - DraculaJust as they did for Sherlock Holmes, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss manage to put a fresh spin on one of the most iconic characters in Western fiction in the form of a BBC-produced miniseries. Dracula may be an adaptation of the classic Bram Stoker novel, but it’s not afraid to chart its own path over the course of its three 90-minute episodes. The series thrives by exploring the rivalry between the undead Count (Claes Bang) and his nemesis Agatha Van Helsing (Dolly Wells). The end result is as silly as it is spooky, but it’s just the ticket for vampire fans fed up with the usual fare.

Read IGN’s Dracula: Season 1 review or watch Dracula on Netflix.

Black Summer

02 - Black-SummerSyfy may have canceled Z Nation in 2018, but the series lives on in a new form on Netflix. The spinoff series Black Summer is basically the anti-Walking Dead. It’s less concerned with character building and exploring the long-term course of humanity after the zombie apocalypse than it is the immediate, visceral fear of battling the undead. Sometimes style over substance is just what the zombie doctor ordered.

Read IGN’s Black Summer: Season 1 review or watch Black Summer on Netflix.

Castlevania

03 - CastlevaniaYou don’t need to be an anime fanatic to appreciate this series, which finally proves that video game adaptations can do justice to the source material. A (very) loose adaptation of Castlevania III on the NES, this series brings together three vampire-hunting heroes in a quest to rid the land of Wallachia from Dracula’s scourge. Stylish action and surprisingly deep characterization both help Castlevania soar. Whether in live-action or animation, Dracula has rarely been this sympathetic a villain.

Read IGN’s Castlevania: Season 1 review or watch Castlevania on Netflix.

Dark

04 - DarkDark may technically qualify as a science fiction series more than anything else, but it’ll definitely scratch that horror itch all the same. This dense German-language series centers on a town that sits atop a time-travel portal and the complex web of characters and conspiracies linked by that portal. The series is dark, brooding and unsettling in addition to being a real mind trip.

Read IGN’s Dark: Season 2 review or watch Dark on Netflix.

Daybreak

05 - DaybreakDaybreak serves as a recent and very welcome addition to Netflix’s horror TV lineup. It’s a zombie survival story with a considerable twist, as it’s as much a John Hughes-inspired coming of age comedy as it is a saga about surviving in the post-apocalypse. Daybreak presents a flawed by ultimately very entertaining world that prioritizes humor as much as horror.

Read IGN’s Daybreak: Season 1 review or watch Daybreak on Netflix.

Lucifer

06 - LuciferWhat if the Devil not only walked among us, but he ran a nightclub in Los Angeles and helped the LAPD solve difficult cases? That’s the premise of this series, which stars Tom Ellis as Lucifer Morningstar and Lauren German as Detective Chloe Decker. The series doesn’t show the same literary ambitions as the comic book source material, but it does put an entertaining and dark spin on the typical police procedural format. Netflix has now become the sole home of Lucifer following NBC’s cancellation of the series, and the service recently debuted the fourth season, with a fifth and potentially sixth season on the way.

Read IGN’s Lucifer: Season 4 review or watch Lucifer on Netflix.

Legacies

07 - LegaciesThe Arrowverse isn’t the only shared universe The CW has established in recent years. Legacies is a spinoff of The Originals, which itself built on the foundation of The Vampire Diaries. This series combines the sexually charged high school drama of Riverdale with a healthy dash of True Blood and X-Men. Danielle Rose Russell stars as Hope Mikaelson, a teenage vampire and the newest student at Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted. While perhaps best appreciated by fans of The Originals and The Vampire Diaries, Legacies has a lot to offer anyone in the mood for a little spooky soap opera fun.

Read IGN’s Legacies: Series premiere review or watch Legacies on Netflix.

The Haunting of Hill House

08 - Hill HouseThe Haunting of Hill House is one of the most celebrated books in the history of horror literature, and has already spawned one of the best horror movies ever made, Robert Wise’s The Haunting, back in 1963. This new adaptation comes from director Mike Flanagan (Gerald’s Game), and very loosely adapts the original tale into a generational saga of supernatural horror, as the Crain family tries to renovate the creepy estate and suffers terrible consequences. Few horror shows have ever received the level of acclaim that The Haunting of Hill House has been getting, so find out for yourself why!

Read IGN’s The Haunting of Hill House: Season 1 review or watch The Haunting of Hill House on Netflix.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/10/29/haunting-of-hill-house-all-the-hidden-ghosts-in-season-1″]

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

09 - Chilling AdventuresHot on the heels of the hit series Riverdale comes Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, another adaptation of the old, wholesome Archie comic books with a dark, modern twist. Instead of being a mild-mannered, wholesome witch who lives next door and gets into delightful mischief, this version of Sabrina (played by Kiernan Shipka) engages in twisted spells and horrifying rituals. Will she embrace her dark baptism, or will she see the light…?

Read IGN’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: Season 1 review or watch Chilling Adventures of Sabrina on Netflix.

The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell

09 - Curious-CreationsFinally… a cooking show with demon puppets. The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell is a curious creation in and of itself. McConnell stars as a version of herself, who lives in a house full of puppet creatures, created by Henson Alternative. When she’s not wrapped up in the misadventures of her mummified cat and roadkill raccoon, she’s making astounding treats modeled after ghoulish delights, like edible femurs and eerily haunted houses. The creations are nearly impossible for most people to make at home because they require an astounding amount of artistic skill, but it’s fascinating to watch McConnell work and her creepy companions are always a delight.

Watch The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell on Netflix.

American Horror Story

10 - American Horror StoryMurder House. Asylum. Coven. Freak Show. Hotel. Roanoke. Every season of the anthology American Horror Story takes place in another corner of America, with a new series of horrors, and most of them are varying degrees of great. The show has a grand guignol sensibility that’s outlandish and entertaining, but it still manages to be genuinely scary once in a while. And watching the same cast of actors play completely different roles in various different seasons gives American Horror Story a strange and fascinating continuity unlike any other horror show on television.

Read IGN’s American Horror Story: 1984 premiere review or watch American Horror Story on Netflix.

Ash vs. Evil Dead

11 - Ash Evil DeadThe adventures of Ash began in the Evil Dead cult hit horror trilogy, and for decades it seemed as though his Deadite-killing days were over. But Ash vs. Evil Dead brought back Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi in a show that continued the mythology and the wild humor that everyone loved from the original, classic films (until it was axed after Season 3, anyway). Ashy Slashy forever!

Read IGN’s Ash vs. Evil Dead: Season 1 review or watch Ash vs. Evil Dead on Netflix.

Bates Motel

12 - Bates MotelThe prequel to the classic, iconic horror movie Psycho, Bates Motel tells the story of a young Norman Bates and his weirdly manipulative mother, who we all know are eventually doomed to live a life of tragedy and murder. But getting there is a lot of creepy fun, with eerie foreshadowing, icky subtext, and admittedly some unnecessary subplots about drug trafficking.

Read IGN’s Bates Motel: Season 1 review or watch Bates Motel on Netflix.

Devilman Crybaby

13 - Devilman CrybabyMasaaki Yuasa’s update of the classic Devilman manga is one of the most twisted and violent shows around. It’s the story of a young, sensitive teenager who becomes infected with a homicidal demon that uses its powers to destroy other demons. But this isn’t a “monster of the week” series. Devilman Crybaby eventually transforms into something completely harrowing, and unlike anything else you’re likely to find on Netflix.

Watch Devilman Crybaby on Netflix.

Dexter

14 - DexterMichael C. Hall plays Dexter, a serial killer who kills other killers. So that makes him… okay? This subversive Showtime series treats homicidal mania like some kind of superpower, with a protagonist who has a secret identity he can never, ever reveal. The later seasons lose steam, but when Dexter was great, it was one of the best shows on television.

Read IGN’s Dexter: Season 1 review or watch Dexter on Netflix.

Goosebumps

15 - GoosebumpsKids like horror too! In this adaptation of the classic R.L. Stine book series, every episode tells a new story of monstrousness without ever becoming actual nightmare fuel. Whether you’re feeling nostalgic or trying to introduce your kids to the horror genre, the Goosebumps TV series is a safe, fun, but still kinda spooky treat.

Watch Goosebumps on Netflix.

iZombie

izombie-blog-1491354589951Just when you thought everything had been done with the zombie genre, and the procedural genre, here comes iZombie, a sharply written series about a medical examiner who happens to be undead. She can only survive by eating brains, and when she eats them, she can remember things about the corpse, which helps her solve one crime after another in this morbidly funny twist on some beloved television tropes.

Read IGN’s iZombie: Season 1 review or watch iZombie on Netflix.

Mindhunter

16 - MindhunterDepending on your definition of horror, Mindhunter might not technically qualify, but it’s certainly horror-adjacent. This exceptional series tells the true story of how the FBI evolved to get into the minds of serial killers, and all of the obstacles that had to be overcome to convince law enforcement officials that there were other ways of investigating and tracking murderers. It’s dark, it’s intriguing, and with several episodes each season directed by David Fincher, it fits right into the mold of Se7en and Zodiac.

Read IGN’s Mindhunter: Season 1 review or watch Mindhunter on Netflix.

Penny Dreadful

17 - Penny DreadfulAll of the gothic literary horror characters who emerged in the late 1800s were real, and lived at the same time. That’s the premise of the captivating and stylish series Penny Dreadful, which combines serious period piece drama with modern fantasy world-building. It may be a bit slow at times, but it’ll suck you right in.

Read IGN’s Penny Dreadful: Season 1 review or watch Penny Dreadful on Netflix.

Stranger Things

18 - Stranger ThingsThe pop culture phenomenon Stranger Things is a show that wears a lot of hats, sometimes evoking Spielbergian levels of nostalgia and wonder, and sometimes Stephen King-like moments of unbridled terror. It’s a blend that works well for Stranger Things, and helps it stand out amongst a sea of other 1980s-inspired movies and TV shows. If you haven’t watched it already, it’s time you started. And now the third season is now available to binge.

Read IGN’s Stranger Things: Season 1 review or watch Stranger Things on Netflix.

Supernatural

19 - SupernaturalThe impossibly long-running horror-adventure series Supernatural has two of the most likable stars in the horror TV genre, Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, who play monster-hunting brothers who travel the country fighting beasties and solving urban legends. The first five seasons are pretty spectacular, and although it couldn’t quite stay brilliant afterwards, there’s a reason it’s lasted 15 years. Give it a watch and you’ll see why.

Read IGN’s Supernatural: Season 1 review or watch Supernatural on Netflix.

The Walking Dead

20 - Walking DeadThe zombies took over the Earth. Now what? The hit zombie drama The Walking Dead just keeps going, and it still finds new ways to shock its audience, long after you’d imagine they’d run out of ideas. At its best, The Walking Dead is one of the best horror shows in TV history. At its worst, it’s still worth watching to get to the next good part.

Read IGN’s The Walking Dead: Season 1 review or watch The Walking Dead on Netflix.

Wynonna Earp

21 - Wynonna EarpThe horror TV show that’s stealthily built up a dedicated cult following, Wynonna Earp, tells the story of Wyatt Earp’s descendant, who now protects the town of Purgatory from demons alongside an immortal Doc Holliday. It’s probably the most butt-kicking supernatural action show on television. You’re going to want to see what all the fuss is about.

Watch Wynonna Earp on Netflix.

The Best Gaming Laptop Deals

Unless you were willing to part with a large sum of cash, the concept of your laptop being your primary gaming rig used to be laughable. Simply put, the tradeoff of power for portability was just not worth it. Fast forward to 2020 and things have changed. Laptop parts are far more powerful and far cheaper than they used to be. Some laptops can even run VR headsets without breaking a sweat. Every one of the deals we’ve found below are best on the web pricing. They range from GTX 1660 Ti equipped laptops that can easily run games at 1080p all the way to RTX 2080 equipped laptops that can crush most gaming desktop PCs.

HP OMEN 15″ 4K 3840×2160 Intel Core i9-9880H Gaming Laptop with RTX 2080 for $ 1916.99

You won’t find another laptop with beastly specs like this for under $ 2K. Not only are you equipped with an RTX 2080 Max-Q video card, the most powerful mobile GPU available, you’re also getting an Intel Core i9-9880H 8-core processor and a gorgeous 4K IPS display. Upgrading your RAM and HDD will push it just over $ 2K although you could probably do that on your own and save some money.

  • Select Processor and Graphics – i9-9880H + RTX 2080 (+$ 980)
  • Select Display – 15.6″ 4K IPS (+$ 150)
  • Proceed to shopping cart
  • At cart, apply code “10GAMERSPRING
  • Price should show up as $ 1916.99

HP OMEN 17″ 1080p 144Hz Intel Core i9-9880H Gaming Laptop with RTX 2080 for $ 1916.99

The 17″ model doesn’t have any option to upgrade to 4K, but one could argue that 4K is overkill for a laptop. You still get a 1080p display with 144Hz refresh rate, which is better for FPS.

  • Select Processor and Graphics – i9-9880H + RTX 2080 (+$ 1080)
  • Select Display – 17.3″ 144Hz 1080p IPS (+$ 100)
  • Proceed to shopping cart
  • At cart, apply code “10GAMERSPRING
  • Price should show up as $ 1916.99

Dell G7 15″ 1080p Intel Core i7-9750H Gaming Laptop with RTX 2060 for $ 1279.99

The G7 is Dell’s highest end gaming laptop outside of Alienware. The RTX 2060 is slightly faster than the previous GTX 1070 video card. This G7 comes well equipped with 16GB of memory and dual storage drives.

HP OMEN 15″ 4K 3840×2160 Intel Core i7-9750H Gaming Laptop with RTX 2080 for $ 1826.10

It’s hard enough to find an RTX 2080-equipped gaming laptop for under $ 2000, but this one doesn’t skip on any other spec either. In fact, you get a true 4K 3840×2160 display, a 9th gen Intel Core i7 processor, and plenty of RAM and SSD storage.

  • Select Processor and Graphics – i7-9750H + RTX 2080 (+$ 630)
  • Select Display – 15.6″ 4K IPS (+$ 150)
  • Proceed to shopping cart
  • At cart, apply code “10GAMERSPRING
  • Price should show up as $ 1826.10

HP OMEN 17″ 4K 3840×2160 Intel Core i7-9750H Gaming Laptop with RTX 2080 for $ 1871.99

If anything, a 17″ display would be put to better use with a massive 4K resolution bump. Fortunately, the RTX 2080-equipped OMEN 17 is the exact same price as the OMEN 15.

  • Select Processor and Graphics – i7-9750H + RTX 2080 (+$ 630)
  • Select Display – 17.3″ 4K IPS (+$ 100)
  • Proceed to shopping cart
  • At cart, apply code “10GAMERSPRING
  • Price should show up as $ 1871.99

HP OMEN 15″ 1080p 144Hz Intel Core i7-9750H Gaming Laptop with RTX 2070 for $ 1430.99

This laptop is every bit as good for gaming but you’ll save about $ 350 compared to the above config. The RTX 2070 video card is almost as powerful as the previous generation’s GTX 1080, which used to be the most powerful mobile GPU. It should be more than enough handle any game on the 15″ 1080p display, even at 144Hz refresh rate. If you want to, you can upgrade to 12GB RAM and 512GB SSD for $ 180.

  • Select Processor and Graphics – i7-9750H + RTX 2070 (+$ 450)
  • Select Display – 15.6″ FHD 144Hz IPS (+$ 70)
  • Proceed to shopping cart
  • At cart, apply code “10GAMERSPRING
  • Price should show up as $ 1430.99

HP Pavilion Gaming 17″ 1080p Intel Core i7-9750H Gaming Laptop with GTX 1660 Ti for $ 1073.49

Use code “HOLIDAYGAMER”

The HP Pavilion Gaming laptop is a more affordable version of the OMEN. The build quality is actually very similar, with the same durable hinge system, excellent cooling, and nice aeshetics. For those of you who don’t like the bling of the OMEN, the Pavilion might actually look better.

Alienware m15 15″ 1080p Intel Core i7-9750H Gaming Laptop with GTX 1660 Ti for $ 1296

The Alienware m15 is the newly designed 15″ laptop and weighs only 4.8 pounds, which is remarkable given its payload. We reviewed the m15 and highly recommend it. It’s easily one of the best laptops you can get in terms of build quality and under-the-hood power.

The Best Gaming PC Deals

These days the average Joe is favoring portability over power. Laptops definitely have more versatility when raw horsepower isn’t a factor. Gamers, however, are a different story. No matter how far gaming laptops have come, they still pale in comparison to the benefits of the gaming desktop PC. The advantages are numerous. A gaming PC is massively more powerful than a gaming laptop at the same price point. A gaming PC can be upgraded to keep up with the times. The vast majority of laptops cannot be upgraded other than the RAM and hard drive, thus locking you in until you buy yet another new laptop. A gaming PC gives you the flexibility of a better, larger monitor. Yes, you can attach an external monitor to your laptop, but then you’ve spent needless dollars on your built-in display. The gaming PC offers better ergonomics compared to your traditional laptop setup. Here are the best deals we’ve found on bona fide gaming desktops. We will update this article regularly.
