‘Heather Has Two Mommies’ Author On The Struggle To Publish Gay Books

As we reflect on milestones made within the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community during October’s LGBT history month, HuffPost Live spoke with Lesléa Newman, the author of the groundbreaking 1989 children’s book Heather Has Two Mommies.

As the first lesbian-themed children’s book published, getting it to readers was a challenge. Newman explained to host Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani earlier this week that getting the book published was an entirely grassroots effort because nobody was willing to endorse it. She said the reception to its publishing was mixed — some “thrilled,” some “horrified.”

“Libraries were reporting that the book was either stolen or returned with its pages glued shut,” Newman recalled. “There was one library that found the book in the bathroom defecated upon. There were politicians who used the book for their own personal agenda. So all kinds of interesting things were happening during that time.”

Finding publishers interested in picture books with a gay agenda is “still a struggle,” Newman said. But in 2008, she was finally approached to write a baby book featuring gay parents.

“I was really pleased that the publishing world was coming to me after I had struggled so hard to put Heather out there,” Newman said. “But obviously, you know, a lot has happened especially in the marriage equality movement that’s made the world a better place, I think, for all of us and all our families.”

He’s spent the last eighteen months drinking too much, hooking up with random girls, and flunking out of law school. When his sister Aubrey has a baby, he goes to visit her on the remote island off the coast of Maine, expecting it to be awkward. A past that haunts the present… What he isn’t expecting is Aubrey’s neighbor to be a beautiful and aloof blonde, Chloe, whose piano playing lulls him to sleep every night. He wants to talk to her, get to know her, kiss her. But Chloe doesn’t speak, and no one knows why. So Ethan makes it his mission to learn the truth and instead falls in love with her smile, her music, her notes and texts to him. Helping Chloe feel safe enough to open up is actually healing him, but what happens when the darkness of reality threatens to destroy their new life? Pierre Bergé to Auction Cache of Rare Books

BOOKISH TYPE: Pierre Bergé is to auction off his personal library, putting an initial cache of about 150 rare books under the hammer on Dec. 11 in Paris.
The former couture boss, 85, has amassed a collection of some 1,600 titles, including musical scores and manuscripts spanning six centuries. Six more auctions are to follow in 2016 and 2017.
Lots in the first sale, to be conducted by Pierre Bergé & Associés in collaboration with Sotheby’s at Drouot, range from the first edition of St. Augustine’s “Confessions,” printed around 1470, to William Burrough’s “Scrap Book 3” from 1979. Jean Cocteau’s “Le Requiem” from 1962 contains a personal dedication to Bergé and is estimated to fetch between 2,000 and 3,000 euros, or about $ 2,230 to $ 3,350 at current exchange rates.
Meanwhile, an autographed first edition of Gustave Flaubert’s “Madame Bovary” from 1857 and the original manuscript for his “Sentimental Education” could go for up to 600,000 euros, or $ 669,500.
A selection of about 60 works is to go on display at Sotheby’s in New York from Sept. 10-13, followed by showcases in Hong Kong from Oct. 2-7 and London from Nov. 6-9.

The Real Donald: Excerpts From Trump’s Books On Women, Marriage, Sex And More

Before he jumped into the presidential race and the media frenzy that comes with it, real estate mogul Donald Trump preferred to communicate with the American people via a more intimate medium — the simple written word.

The Huffington Post has reviewed nearly a dozen books by and/or about Trump, including one by John O’Donnell, a former executive in Trump’s business empire, and one by Tim O’Brien, a longtime journalist and former HuffPost editor. Reading through these works, which go back a full 25 years, one gets a better sense of the businessman’s macho persona, his taste for extravagance, his views about women and his rise to the top of the New York City social scene. All quotes are Trump’s words except where noted otherwise.

On marriage

“A good marriage is like negotiating an important deal: You have to consider all the factors, thoughtfully and thoroughly. If you were investing a large part of yourself and your fortune into a venture, believe me, you’d make sure you thought about it for a long time first. That’s how I see marriage. It’s serious, and it’s important. I don’t approach it any more haphazardly than I do a very important deal. In fact, considering the amount of deals I’ve made compared to the number of marriages I’ve had, I’d say I’m quite cautious about marriage. You should be, too.” (Think Like A Billionaire, Donald Trump with Meredith McIver, 2005)

*

“For a man to be successful he needs support at home, just like my father had from my mother, not someone who is always griping and bitching. When a man has to endure a woman who is not supportive and complains constantly about his not being home enough or not being attentive enough, he will not be very successful unless he is unable to cut the cord.” (The Art of the Comeback, Donald Trump with Kate Bohner, 1997)

“If he doesn’t lose the ballbreaker, his career will go nowhere.” (The Art of the Comeback

On prenuptial agreements

“There are basically three types of women and reactions. One is the good woman who very much loves her future husband, solely for himself, but refuses to sign the agreement on principle. I fully understand this, but the man should take a pass anyway and find someone else.” (The Art of the Comeback)

On women

“I was always of the opinion that aggression, sex drive, and everything that goes along with it was on the man’s part of the table, not the woman’s. As I grew older and witnessed life firsthand from a front-row seat at the great clubs, social events, and parties of the world — I have seen just about everything — I began to realize that women are far stronger than men. Their sex drive makes us look like babies. Some women try to portray themselves as being of the weaker sex, but don’t believe it for a minute.” (The Art of the Comeback)

*

“I remember attending a magnificent dinner being given by one of the most admired people in the world. I was seated next to a lady of great social pedigree and wealth. Her husband was sitting on the other side of the table, and we were having a very nice but extremely straight conversation. All of a sudden I felt her hand on my knee, then on my leg. She started petting me in all different ways. I looked at her and asked, ‘Is everything alright?’ I didn’t want to make a scene in a ballroom full of five hundred VIPs. The amazing part about her was who she was — one of the biggest of the big. She then asked me to dance, and I accepted. While we were dancing she became very aggressive, and I said, ‘Look, we have a problem. Your husband is sitting at that table, and so is my wife.’

‘Donald,’ she said, ‘I don’t care. I just don’t care. I have to have you, and I have to have you now.’ I told her that I’d call her, but she had to stop the behavior immediately. She made me promise, and I did. When I called I just called to say hello, and that was the end of that. But the level of aggression was unbelievable.” (The Art of the Comeback)

*

“One woman, who was socially prominent, was getting married, and I had bumped into her on Fifth Avenue while she was exchanging wedding gifts. I had my limousine nearby, and she asked if I could give her a ride back to her apartment on Park Avenue. I said absolutely, not even suspecting that within five seconds after the door closed she would be jumping on top of me wanting to get screwed. I said, ‘You’re getting married next week, and I’m going to your wedding.’

‘I don’t really care,’ she said. ‘ I never liked him that much anyway, and you know that.’ I was really in a quandary, because she is a truly great-looking and sexy woman.” (The Art of the Comeback)

*

“Women have one of the great acts of all time. The smart ones act very feminine and needy, but inside they are real killers. The person who came up with the expression ‘the weaker sex’ was either very naive or had to be kidding. I have seen women manipulate men with just a twitch of their eye — or perhaps another body part.” (The Art of the Comeback)

*

“There’s nothing I love more than women, but they’re really a lot different than portrayed. They are far worse than men, far more aggressive, and boy, can they be smart.” (The Art of the Comeback)

*

“I don’t know why, but I seem to bring out either the best or worst in women.” (The Art of the Comeback)

*

“I love women. They’ve come into my life. They’ve gone out of my life. Even those who have exited somewhat ungracefully still have a place in my heart.” (The Art of the Comeback)

*

“She’s just a woman. She can’t take the business.” (As quoted in Trumped!, John R. O’Donnell with James Rutherford, 1991)

*

“I don’t need this, some woman crying. I need somebody strong in here to take care of this place.” (Trumped!)

*

“She is really something else. God, what a body she has!… She’s a beautiful girl. Just a beautiful girl. Fucking gorgeous. An incredible body, just an incredible body. The girl is so physically fit. Beautiful face. A beautiful, beautiful girl.” (Trumped!)

*

“It’s all about the hunt and once you get it, it loses some of its energy. I think competitive, successful men feel that way about women.” (As quoted in TrumpNation, Timothy L. O’Brien, 2005)

“Sam Jackson should have gotten the Oscar for [‘Pulp Fiction’], not Travolta,” Donald mused. “My favorite part is when Sam has his gun out in the diner and he tells the guy to tell his girlfriend to shut up: ‘Tell that bitch to be cool! Say: “Bitch be cool!”’ I love those lines.” (O’Brien, writing in TrumpNation)

*

“I think that putting a wife to work is a very dangerous thing. There was a great softness to Ivana, and she still has that softness, but during this period of time, she became an executive, not a wife… You know, I don’t want to sound too much like a chauvinist, but when I come home and dinner’s not ready, I’ll go through the roof, okay?” (TrumpNation)

*

“You know, it really doesn’t matter what they write as long as you’ve got a young and beautiful piece of ass.” (TrumpNation)

On beauty pageants

“Nobody cares about the talent. There’s only one talent you care about, and that’s the look talent. You don’t give a shit if a girl can play a violin like the greatest violinist in the world. You want to know what does she look like.” (TrumpNation

On publicity

“Publicity is important because it creates interest in my hotels, residential buildings, and other projects. But sometimes it gets out of hand, and my every move is scrutinized by the press to the point of absurdity… The Trump Organization is in some ways like the Disney Company: Image means a great deal to me. If people don’t associate my name with quality and success, I’ve got serious problems.” (Surviving at the Top, Donald Trump with Charles Leerhsen, 1990)

On his youth

“I was especially carefree. I had a comfortable little studio apartment on Third Avenue in the city, and I maintained a lifestyle that was fairly commonplace then but that now, in an age when people are worried about dying from sex, is hard even to imagine. I didn’t drink or take drugs, as far as stimulants go, I’ve yet to have my first cup of coffee. But I was out four or five nights a week, usually with a different woman each time, and I was enjoying myself immensely.

Wild things happened all the time back then, and nobody thought very much of it. For instance, one day a friend called me at the office and said he needed to set up a date for a certain well-known married woman. This woman was visiting from out of town and was, he said — using a typical swinging-seventies expression — ‘really hot.’

I had a girlfriend at that time, and so did he, but I knew a guy named Ben who was very worldly-wise. Ben, I was sure, could serve as this woman’s escort and be discreet about it… She turned out to be the wife of a man who was then the prime minister of a major country. I’d heard stories about this lady, but I never thought much of them until that night. We met at the house of the friend who’d phoned me. After we’d all chatted for a while in the living room, the four of us who already knew each other drifted out to the kitchen, leaving Ben and Madame X in the living room to get better acquainted. Which they did. In fact, when we drifted back in, about ten minutes later, she and Ben were involved in an incredibly torrid scene on the couch. I remember standing there and thinking to myself, ‘Well, Donald, you’re not in Queens anymore.'” (Surviving at the Top)

On Michael Jackson’s sex life

“Somehow, Michael feels comfortable with me. I asked him how he was doing, and we started talking about his life, including his sex life. I was somewhat surprised when Michael told me he had a new girlfriend. I congratulated him and asked, ‘Who is it?’ He was very shy and looked down into his napkin, then put the napkin over his face and said, ‘Trump, Trump, I don’t want to talk about it, I’m so embarrassed.’ I chided him. ‘Come on, Michael,’ I said, ‘tell me who your new girlfriend is.’ When he finally looked up, he said that it was a girl named Lisa Marie.” (The Art of the Comeback)

On onerous litigation

“Litigation in the United States has gotten totally out of control. It has actually become an accepted business practice for people to use the court’s time, money, and energy in order to effect deals, break up deals, and receive money unjustly. I know people who virtually can’t function without starting a lawsuit, thinking that this will give them the upper hand in even the most simple of negotiations. Politicians ought to be ashamed of themselves for perpetuating this ridiculous situation. Court systems have become backlogged for years with superfluous cases.” (The Art of the Comeback)

On germaphobia

“I happen to be a clean-hands freak. I feel much better after I thoroughly wash my hands, which I do as often as possible. Recent medical reports have come out saying that colds and various other ailments are spread through the act of shaking hands. I have no doubt about this.

Almost nothing bothers me more than sitting down for dinner at a beautiful restaurant and having a man you’ve just seen leaving the men’s room, perhaps not even having washed his hands, spot you and run over to your table with a warm and friendly face, hand outstretched. You have a decision to make. Do you shake this total stranger’s hand, or do you insult him by saying that you would rather not? I have done both, and nothing works. If you shake his hand, you then get up to rewash your hands and inevitably somebody else comes over to you to shake hands. If you don’t shake his hand, he walks away with a long face, totally insulted, and bemoans for the rest of his life how that bastard Donald Trump would not shake his hand.” (The Art of the Comeback)

On his fear of AIDS

“It was painfully obvious how ill at ease he was in public situations. In part, I think it was really beyond his control. He was preoccupied by a fear of communicable disease, especially AIDS. Sometimes he’d joke about it, but he went so far as to warn a high-ranking Trump’s Castle publicist to avoid the Jacuzzi in the luxury health spa there because he considered it a potential breeding ground for the deadly virus.” (O’Donnell, writing in Trumped!)

*

“What went on in Studio 54 will never, ever happen again. First of all, you didn’t have AIDS. You didn’t have the problems you have now. I saw things happening there that to this day I have never seen again. I would watch supermodels getting screwed, well-known supermodels getting screwed on a bench in the middle of the room. There were seven of them and each one was getting screwed by a different guy. This was in the middle of the room. Stuff that couldn’t happen today because of problems of death.” (TrumpNation)

On his “tremendous fear of baldness”

“For Donald, image and reality were always in conflict. The Windsor knot in his tie was always pulled tight to his throat. At the same time, he let his sand-colored hair dip down to his eyes and curl over his ears and collar, and he plastered it on the sides with a greasy gel that he believed fostered hair growth. He had a tremendous fear of baldness. He swept his hair across the front of his head like a man trying to hide a thinning patch. He once observed to Mark that he considered baldness a sign of weakness. He gave a tube of the gel he used to Mark, warning him, ‘The worst thing a man can do is go bald. Never let yourself go bald,’ as if nature could be circumvented through sheer force of will.” (O’Donnell, writing in Trumped!)

On boxer Mike Tyson

“Tyson sat down in Donald’s corner office hundreds of feet above Fifth Avenue and the two men chatted for about fifteen minutes before the boxer got to the point. Donald recalled their conversation in detail.

‘Mr. Trump, could I ask you a question?’ Tyson asked.

‘Whatever you want, Mike,’ Donald responded.

‘Are you fucking my wife?’

‘What?’

‘Are you fucking my wife? Everyone’s telling me that you’re fucking my wife.’

Tyson then pulled out a copy of a Vogue magazine that featured a picture of Ms. [Robin] Givens wearing a Trump Princess hat from Donald’s yacht.

‘Everyone’s telling me that you’re fucking my wife and I think you’re fucking my wife,’ Tyson said.

‘Mike, let me tell you something: I never ever even thought about it. And I heard those rumors and they’re disgusting. In fact, I called you a couple of times to tell you that I heard those rumors and it pisses me off. And I never, ever even thought about it. She’s your wife, she’s with you, she’s loyal to you, and it’s total bullshit.’” (O’Brien, writing in TrumpNation)

On dealing with setbacks

“Finally, the ceiling was installed. One Saturday, Donald went up to have a look, accompanied by Steve, some of our hotel executives and a group of contractors. Donald looked up at the ceiling as if it was the first time he had seen it; then he looked at Steve. ‘What the fuck is this?’ he said. ‘Who said to make this ceiling so low?’

‘You knew about this, Donald,’ Steve replied. ‘We talked about it, if you remember, and the plans –‘

Suddenly Donald leaped up and punched his fist through the tile. Then he turned on Steve in a rage. ‘You cocksucker! Motherfucker! Where the fuck were you? Where was your fucking head?'” (O’Donnell, writing in Trumped!)

*

“’Where’s my wife? Get Ivana down here,’ he said. When she arrived, Donald turned on her fiercely. ‘How could you close one of my tables on the busiest fucking night of the year!’ he shouted. ‘I can’t believe you could be so stupid. Do you know how much money I’m losing here? Stupid! You’re costing me a fortune! This is the stupidest fucking thing I’ve ever seen!’” (O’Donnell, writing in Trumped!)

The “People Power” Internet Business Superbook Five Books on Making Money Online

The “People Power” Internet Business Superbook Five Books on Making Money Online

The five books on making money online are as follows: Book 1. Business Website, Collect Money, Send Things Book 2. Internet Selling (Sell on Your Website & on the Big Internet Stores) Book 3. Online Classified Ads Book 4. Internet Marketing, Website Optimization (Get Visitors to Your Website) Book 5. Computer-Internet Jobs-Business E-commerce lowers the cost of transmitting information and makes it accessible to everywhere on the planet in under a second. That’s great but that’s all it is, a faster, more accessible means to do business. If your product is not very good and you have problems running your business, e-commerce will not magically make you rich. Many players tried to make money from the internet itself like ebay, amazon, google, etc. but most failed. Many retail internet websites failed but some fared alright, the ones that had a niche market where the products they sold could be easily shipped by a delivery company and already established companies who merely put out a website to enhance their existing business. The major disadvantages of internet sales are as follows: Some things are meant to be sold in person like clothing, a car, flowers, etc. Some things are simply not condusive to being shipped because it costs too much like dog food, garden tools, etc. Customers are picky about some things, they complain a lot and there’s room for fraud. Consider vitamins. There are fakes and cheap knock-offs. If you buy a bottle at your local health food store, you feel safer than buying a bottle over the internet. The shipping costs make some things not amenable to being sold over the internet like small, inexpensive things where the cost of shipping is as much as the product itself. Anything that’s perishable can’t be sold. A big part of buying is impulse. You see something at the mall and buy it. Some products have to be inspected. You can’t get a feel for them over the internet. Some products don’t have enough buyers to justify a websit

Arrested for Library Books

My father had a phenomenal ability to remain calm, especially having so many children in the house. Screaming and fights to the death were usually stopped easily by a quiet word from him, such as “OK guys, that’s about enough.” That was enough to stop anything going on, unlike mother who could be screaming louder and higher than dogs could hear, which did nothing. A quiet word from Daddy would. He rarely raised his voice. Except once.

2015-07-07-1436292595-9024916-bookfb.jpg

We were all at the beach except for Daddy. We were in the house down on St. Andrew’s Bay, playing, swimming, just having a fine time. I was in the house, and the phone rang.

“Hello.”

“Hello son, it’s Dad.”

I started out for a nice conversation with him and was summarily cut off.

“Please put your mother on the line… Now please,” he said in a quiet even tone.

He was much more curt than I had ever heard.

“Mama, Daddy’s on the phone”

Mama came to the phone, with a big smile on her face.

“Hello Sweetheart, how are you?

She started to listen and her smile began to fade. As she continued to listen, her smile turned into thin, pursed lips. Then they pressed together as her teeth were biting them from inside.

“Yes. About 30 minutes. Right, no problem.”

Mom got into gear. “Children, get everything, I don’t care if it’s wet, dry, throw it into bags, whatever you can find, we have to leave in 30 minutes to be back in Montgomery.”

We started asking questions and she said she would tell us later and just get going.

Once we had gotten everything in the car (it looked like we had loaded it with a pitchfork), we took off. Mother usually drove the speed limit. Not that day.

It seems that Daddy was having a nice Saturday. He loved to work in the yard, mow, tend the roses and he got to do it without all of us!

As he wheeled the mower around the edge of the yard, he noticed City of Montgomery Police cars pull up. He thought something must be wrong at the Coca-Cola Plant and they were coming to tell him. He shut off the mower, pushed the sweatband off of his forehead and walked over to the officers.

One spoke immediately. “Are you Gilbert William Hitchcock?” Daddy replied that he was. “May we please see your identification?” He happened to have his wallet in his pants and showed them his driver’s license.

“Mr. Hitchcock, you are under arrest. Anything you say may be used against you.” And they completed his Miranda Rights.

After they finished, Daddy asked them what in the world this was about.

“Mr. Hitchcock, our records show that you have 28 library books checked out in your name some of which are over five years overdue.”

Daddy thought a minute. “Library books? But I don’t even have a card.”

“The cards are in your name. Mr. Hitchcock, but it was actually your wife and children who took out the books.”

Daddy asked if he could make his one phone call and they said yes. He called the Chief of Police who happened to be one of his best friends. As Chief Swindall tried to restrain his laughter when Daddy told him the story, he asked to speak to the officers. Daddy could hear their end of the conversation.

“Well yes sir, you are right, he does look like a dangerous criminal, but I agree that this is a low charge and we can release him here on his own recognizance as per your authority. Yes Sir. Yes Sir. Thank you Sir.”

The policemen informed Daddy that he was not under arrest, but would need to appear in court on “X” date to handle this.

About three hours later, our Ford LTD Wagon pulled into the driveway. Daddy immediately presented us with a list of the books that were outstanding.

“I first want ALL of the library cards brought to me, including yours he said,” pointing to mother. “Then I want this house turned upside down until they are all found.” I noticed that he didn’t even grin.

We found the books and were spared Mother’s wrath as she herself had four books outstanding. Daddy returned the books, paid the fine, cancelled Christmas that year, went to court, and all was fine.

Three months later, two City of Montgomery cars pulled up, the officers got out of their car and rang the doorbell. “Are you Gilbert William…”

Somehow the warrant had not been expunged from the system, Daddy again called Chief Swindall, was read his rights, had to go BACK to court where they apologized for their error.

We were not allowed to even read the labels on cans for two years.

17 Timeless Books Our Dads Read To Us When We Were Young

Reading to a squirming child can be a bit of a chore, especially the kind of child who demands to hear Goodnight Moon five times every night for a year and a half. Still, it’s one of the most rewarding ways parents can spend time with their little ones: fostering a love of books, cuddling, and creating lifelong memories. For parents who spend their days at work, the bedtime story can be a particularly cherished tradition.

With Father’s Day on the horizon, we wanted to remember the times our dads took the time to read a favorite book to us when we were small. Some of our dads read us Seuss, and some read us sci-fi, but one thing is for sure — we all remember the books our fathers read with us, and the joy those story times brought to our childhoods.

Below, in no particular order, HuffPosters recall the books their dads shared with them growing up. Tell us about your favorite childhood memory of reading with your dad in the comments!

1. The Hobbit

hobbit

No offense to Andy Serkis, but you haven’t heard the true voice of Gollum unless you were there when my dad read The Hobbit and the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy aloud to my brothers and me when we were little. He’s an English professor, not a voice actor, but he got into the performance aspect with gusto, and even 20 years later, I can hear his Gollum impression in my mind’s ear. Unfortunately when he tried Watership Down, the bedtime reading tradition fell apart — we couldn’t get on board with warring bunnies — but I’ll always love that he looked at us three kids, all well under the age of 10, and thought, “Yep, it’s time to tell them a story about a faceless evil power bringing an end to life as we’d like to know it.” Thanks, Dad. -Claire Fallon, Culture Writer

2. Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel

mike mulligan

Before he retired, my dad was an electrician in New York City, a job that is full of tough guys doing physical labor. I wonder if him reading Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel to me and my siblings sticks out in my mind now because it gave a humanlike face and feelings to heavy-duty machinery, much like the kind I imagined my father working with all day. It brought my dad and his looming 6-foot-6-inch stature down to our level figuratively and literally, because I think we’d usually pile around him on one of our beds or the living room couch when a reading was happening. Today, I wonder if turning the beloved steam shovel into a furnace (spoilers!!!) really was the best plot resolution, but it still stands. Or that’s just my childhood nostalgia speaking. -Jillian Capewell, Entertainment News Editor

3. The Lorax

lorax

My dad used to read The Lorax to me all the time when I was little. I’m not entirely sure why we got so into it — it must’ve just been Dr. Seuss’s entrancing meter and repetition that kept bringing us back to it. To this day we’ll still sometimes say to each other “Those trees! Those trees! Those truffula trees!” -Alexandra Svokos, College & Education Fellow

4. Father and Daughter Tales

father daughter tales

My dad and I used to always read Father and Daughter Tales before I went to bed. When he was tired, he would sometimes skip parts of the story, but I had the entire book memorized, so I always caught him. When he would finish reading, he would always ask me, “So, what’s the moral of the story?” And sometimes, when we couldn’t track down Father and Daughter Tales he would read me Mother and Daughter Tales! -Michelle Persad, Fashion Editor

5. Hop On Pop

pop

When I was really little (2 to 4 years old) and learning to read, my dad and I would read Hop On Pop by Dr. Seuss. Well, he would read it me and use his finger to point to the words. I technically couldn’t actually read what was on the pages, but I memorized the book. Then, being inspired by the message of the book, I would subsequently attempt to hop on pop. -Eva Hill, Video Editor and Lead Animator

6. Miss Nelson Is Missing!

nelson

One of my fondest memories with my dad is when he used to read books to my sister, brother, and I. Some of the books that were a part of that childhood memory are Abiyoyo by Pete Seeger and Owl Moon by Jane Yolen, which both hold special places in my heart. But our ultimate favorite that Dad would read was Miss Nelson Is Missing! by Harry Allard. Why? Because as my dad puts it, “You guys were really surprised that the mean substitute teacher was Miss Nelson!” -Jacqueline Howard, Associate Editor, HuffPost Science

7. Officer Buckle and Gloria

gloria

When I was little, my dad would read to me every night before bed. One of my favorite books we read together was Officer Buckle and Gloria by Peggy Rathmann. It’s the story of a police officer who tours the town of Napville teaching kids about safety. (The name “Napville” never struck me as odd before now … possibly because nap time was always a mandatory Williams family activity). Officer Buckle’s presentation receives a little spice with the addition of Gloria, a police dog with a penchant for dramatics. As Officer Buckle lists off his safety tips, Gloria acts out each potential catastrophe behind him, delighting their young audience. The story is funny, heartwarming, and features an acting dog, so basically I was in little-kid heaven. Even so, I’d often ask my dad to “read it funny,” at which point he’d go off-script and make up a nonsensical story, complete with voices and silly faces. I would laugh hysterically. And even after all this time, I still live by Officer Buckle’s Safety Tip #77: Never stand on a swivel chair. -Abigail Williams, Associate Social Media Editor

8. Frog and Toad Are Friends

frog

My dad would read Arnold Lobel’s Frog and Toad Are Friends to me and my sister — in particular the story “A Lost Button,” in which Toad loses a button off his jacket, and then he and Frog search for it. They find a bunch of buttons, but none of them are Toad’s. When my dad read us the story, he would read Toad’s dialogue with a mounting, apoplectic rage that I’m pretty sure Lobel didn’t include in the original version. “That is not my button,” my dad would snarl in Toad’s voice. “That button is SQUARE. My button is ROUND.” Obviously, hearing Toad grow closer and closer to snapping completely and murdering his best friend was, to me and my sister, the funniest thing in the world. -Alexander Eichler, News Editor

9. Tom Brown’s School Days

tom

My dad read a book out loud to me and my brother that no one has ever mentioned since to me: Tom Brown’s School Days. Never heard of it? That’s because your parent did not grow up in freshly independent India, in the shadow of the British Raj. Frankly, I don’t remember much about the actual story beyond a blur of boys and green fields. (A quick Wikipedia skim tells me the semi-autobiography was set in a country school in England — Rugby School — where in the early 1800s the book’s author, Thomas Hughes, got schooled). What I do remember is the Pavlovian thrill the sight of that worn and stark blue cover — no illustrations — stirred in me each night my dad brought it down from the shelf. This was the end of the day, the only time where I actually knew precisely where we all were for a stretch of time. It could have been any book. -Mallika Rao, Culture Reporter

10. The Napping House

napping house

My dad Kevin didn’t just read stories — The Napping House by Audrey Wood was always in the rotation — he was also amazing at making them up. “The Four Bears and The Red Bud Berries” was a favorite for my three siblings and me. Now he reads to and makes up stories for my kids, Eli and Henry, and man oh man, it melts my heart. -Katie Nelson, National Editor

11. Day of Infamy

infamy

I know what you’re thinking: A 1957 non-fiction book about the attack on Pearl Harbor isn’t exactly sentimental. Bear with me. My father, a surgeon, worked very long hours. But he always made time for me — on weekends, at nights before I went to sleep — and he liked nothing more than sharing his vast knowledge about history. He got that knowledge from books, most of which he kept in the library that was across the hallway from my bedroom.

It’s still there, with deep brown wood bookcases that go from floor to ceiling, only now he’s had to pile the books two deep in some places. He’d also taken over the shelves in another part of the house, much to my poor mother’s occasional dismay. But I get it. The library was the room that always made me happiest. I’d sit there for hours, plucking titles off the shelves and flipping through them in my father’s beat-up recliner chair.

Day of Infamy was one of the first “adult” books I could read as a kid. I must have gone through it a dozen times, which seems weird until you put yourself in the mind of an 11- or 12-year-old. Reading it made me feel grown-up. It made me feel like Dad. And that made me feel good. By the way, I’ve tried hard to carry on that tradition with my own two boys, both of whom hang out in my library and, before bed, demand that I give them history lessons. I’m not sure how much they like the history and how much they just like hanging out with me. But I don’t really care and I imagine my father has always felt the same way. -Jonathan Cohn, Senior National Correspondent

12. Make Way For Ducklings

duck

I have fond memories of reading a number of “vintage” books with my dad when I was little. One of our favorites was Make Way For Ducklings by Robert McCloskey. It’s a book that’s been around for a while, but the black-and-white drawings are still packed with action. I remember appreciating how the policemen went out of their way to assist the ducks and keep them safe during their journey to the pond. And when I visited Boston many years later, I was excited to see the statues of the Mallard family in Boston Common. Seeing them brought back memories of the many evenings my dad and I spent sharing the ducklings’ story together. -Sara Bondioli, Deputy Politics Editor

13. The Call of the Wild

wild

In middle school we had to read The Call of the Wild, which literally bored me to tears. To encourage me, my dad promised to read every chapter with me — he even took notes. At the end of the chapters we’d sit down and discuss what had happened and what we thought would happen next. Though it’s far from being one of my favorite books, I sort of like it, because without reading it, I would have never had that bonding experience with my dad. -Yagana Shah, Huff/Post50 Associate Editor

14. Into the Land of the Unicorns

unicorns

My dad demonstrated incredible patience in repeatedly reading first-grade me a novel called Into the Land of the Unicorns. It involved a young girl who got magically transported into a bizarre unicorn-inhabited land to deliver a secret message to the queen unicorn. Needless to say, this was probably not riveting reading material for a man in his 40s, but my dad persevered with enthusiasm and a (semi-limited) range of voices for different characters. -Hilary Hanson, Crime and Weird News Editor

15. Curious George Goes to an Ice Cream Shop

curious george

When I was little, I loved reading Curious George with my dad. The most memorable book from the series is Curious George Goes to an Ice Cream Shop. It indulged my love of ice cream while instilling the importance of patronizing local businesses, even if the owners are a little crabby. -Katelyn Bogucki, Multimedia Producer

16. Ender’s Game

ender

I never was that into science fiction (not much has changed), but somehow, when I was in elementary school, my dad coaxed me into reading Ender’s Game, one of the many Orson Scott Card books he read. I loved it, and have probably read it a dozen times since. Looking back, it’s no surprise a story about a student chosen for a special adventure to save the world appealed to a daydreamy, bookish kid — it’s actually just like Harry Potter, if Harry Potter had futuristic technology of the ‘80s instead of magic and a space station instead of a wizard school. At the time, I loved having something to bond over with my dad, and also read all of the (much more boring) sequels for that reason. Now, I’m grateful that he taught me the rewards of being adventurous in my reading and otherwise, pushed me to take chances on the unfamiliar and took the time to share something he genuinely loved with his daughter. -Kate Abbey-Lambertz, Detroit Editor

17. The Golden Compass

compass

I grew up in a family that loved science fiction and fantasy, so one of the first books that I remember bonding with my dad about with was The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman. The protagonist Lyra was a fearless, talkative girl who was highly intelligent and loved adventure. That book was the beginning of our love for other fantasy and young adult books — including Harry Potter, Stargirl and The Lord of the Rings. Because Father’s Day and my birthday happen around the same time every year, it’s a special time for my dad and I to talk to each other about books and what we’re reading — as well as our love of reading. The written word has evolved from handwritten letters to words on a page to texting — and I wouldn’t trade the evolution of my relationship with my dad and our love of reading for anything. -Madeline Wahl, Blogs & Community Associate Editor

BONUS: Fermat’s Enigma: The Epic Quest to Solve the World’s Greatest Mathematical Problem

fermat

When I was about 11, my dad, an engineer with a sick sense of humor, informed me that if I wanted to return to camp that summer, I would have to read and report on Fermat’s Enigma: The Epic Quest to Solve the World’s Greatest Mathematical Problem, the scintillating, true tale of a mathematician doing … math stuff. I have no idea if my dad was actually trying to get me interested in something he enjoyed, or was just playing a cruel parenting joke. While I complained and put it off ’til the last minute, I did read the entire thing, and I think I understood it. I maybe even secretly enjoyed the historical drama parts, but now I can remember the taunting image of Fermat’s face on the cover of Simon Singh’s book better than I could explain what an + bn = cn means. Still, this story is one of my favorites about me and my dad, one of the most revealing about our relationship and bound to crack us up if we retell it. -Kate Abbey-Lambertz, Detroit Editor

When Books Went to War: The Stories that Helped Us Win World War II

When Books Went to War: The Stories that Helped Us Win World War II

When America entered World War II in 1941, we faced an enemy that had banned and burned over 100 million books and caused fearful citizens to hide or destroy many more. Outraged librarians launched a campaign to send free books to American troops and gathered 20 million hardcover donations. In 1943, the War Department and the publishing industry stepped in with an extraordinary program: 120 million small, lightweight paperbacks, for troops to carry in their pockets and their rucksacks, in every theater of war.Comprising 1,200 different titles of every imaginable type, these paperbacks were beloved by the troops and are still fondly remembered today. Soldiers read them while waiting to land at Normandy; in hellish trenches in the midst of battles in the Pacific; in field hospitals; and on long bombing flights. They wrote to the authors, many of whom responded to every letter. They helped rescueThe Great Gatsbyfrom obscurity. They made Betty Smith, author ofA Tree Grows in Brooklyn, into a national icon. When Books Went to Waris an inspiring story for history buffs and book lovers alike.

21 Books From The Last 5 Years That Every Woman Should Read

books every woman

The one struggle of being a woman who reads is that you want to read everything.

It’s easy to get overwhelmed by bestseller lists, because there just isn’t enough time in the day to read every hot new book. Between near-constant recommendations of amazing memoirs, new sequels and a terrifyingly long list of bookmarked Internet longreads, it can be stressful to choose what you should pick up next. Knowing which classics you’re missing from your reading repertoire is easy — it’s a little harder to remember what you’ve missed from three years ago.

We’ve done a little bit of the hard work for you (or maybe just increased your book stress… sorry) by pulling together a list of incredible titles from the past few years that you should add to the pile on your bedside table. These books by women are just a few of the incredible titles published recently — an exhaustive list would be hundreds of books longer. Those listed here are some of the most-discussed, thought-provoking and life-changing books from a diverse group of women writers. They make you rethink what being a feminist means, offer life advice to women of all ages, and reinforce your long-held belief that Tina and Amy should be your best friends and life coaches forever. The novels are some of the finest writing from woman authors. From lighthearted memoirs to harrowing thrillers, there’s a genre here for everyone.

Here are 21 books published in the past 5 years that all women should read:

The Books of James C. Patch: Utopia

The Books of James C. Patch: Utopia

This is the continuing story of James C. Patch and Jacob Masterson. The first book, The Books of James C. Patch: The Barrier chronicled the adventures of Jacob Masterson as he attempted to destroy the evil barrier that was preventing spirits from entering the Utopia on the other side. James C. Patch was an author living in the early 1900’s when tragedy struck his family when he decided to write down what he found out about death and the afterlife. James C. Patch was a split-spirit. A spirit that could split from his body prior to death and was able to cross through the barrier and see through his spirit what was on the other side. While in his spirited state he noticed millions of spirits that were not able to penetrate the barrier. The majority of these spirits were children who had not had time to collect a lot of memories and those are the spirits that the barrier preyed upon. Jacob found out that memories were the key to the rapid penetration of the barrier and they were able to connect with loved ones that were already on the other side. This is the third and final installment.

Writing Childrens Books For Dummies

Writing Childrens Books For Dummies

Everyone loves a children''s book. And many dream about writing one. But is it actually possible for an unpublished writer—armed with a good story idea and a love of kids—to write, sell, publish, and promote a book? Yes, it is! Veteran children''s book publishing executive and author Lisa Rojany Buccieri and author Peter Economy show you how, in their incredibly useful 2005 first edition of Writing Children''s Books For Dummies®.Buccieri and Economy begin by explaining the basics of the children''s book business, from the nuts and bolts of the various formats and genres—with helpful illustrations to aid you—to the intricacies of the book publishing market, a list of recent award-winning books, and a first peek into the particular mind set that writing children''s books requires. (Hint: Throw out the adult rules, and think like a kid!)Then the authors dive into the actual writing process itself, with tips on setting up a workspace, brainstorming great book ideas, researching the subject you decide on, even speaking with the sorts of kids you hope will eventually read the book. They show you how to create compelling characters and develop them in the manuscript; how to outline and write a plot arc of conflict, change, and resolution; how to master the difficult art of writing dialogue; and how to use active (rather than passive) language to keep your story moving along and interesting to young minds.Or, if you''re planning to write a creative nonfiction children''s book—on a topic such as science, nature, or a historical figure, for example—the authors include a chapter on this, too. Ready, set, go… it''s time to sit down and write!Once you''ve finished your book, however, the process has only begun. Now you will refine, submit, and hopefully sell your manuscript. Here again, the authors of Writing Children''s Books For Dummies come through for you. They deliver solid advice on hiring an illustrator—or not; participating in workshops and conferences to learn the business and hone a story; finding an agent; and, finally, submitting the manuscript to publishers and—if you are successful—signing a contract.Along the way, the authors also include tips on handling rejection; a quick primer on the various editors in publishing houses (and how they work to make your book its best); and making a plan to publicize the book, including hiring a publicist if necessary.Like all For Dummies® books, Writing Children''s Books For Dummies highlights The Part of Tens, which includes the Ten Best Ways to Promote Your Story and More Than Ten Great Sources for Storylines. And the ever-helpful Cheat Sheet includes Tips for Editing your Children''s Book Manuscript, Children''s Book No-No''s, Twelve Commandments for Writing Younger Children''s Books, and Tips on Promotion. From setting down that first word on paper to doing a successful publicity tour, Writing Children''s Books For Dummies gives you the confidence and the insiders'' know-how to write and sell the story you''ve always wanted to write.

MutualArt’s Top 10 Art Books of 2014

As we say goodbye to 2014, we thought it might be nice to look back at what the year offered us in terms of art printed on paper and bound between two covers. Whether it’s a catalogue that allows us to enjoy an exhibition long after its doors have closed, or an in-depth investigation into the oeuvre of our favorite artists, these new books will surely be treasured for years to come. We’ve paid particular attention to art books that actively question what it means to make a book, and highlight examples where the book’s form echoes the artworks depicted or curatorial methods represented within its pages. Spanning the spectrum from wide-ranging surveys to in-depth investigations into a single work of art, from massive retrospectives on established careers to emerging artists’ self-published titles, here are a few of the art books from the last year that truly inspired.
1. The Thing The Book, Jonn Herschend and Will Rogan eds.
Publisher: Chronicle Books (September 23, 2014)
$ 40
Cover of The Thing The Book.
From the people who brought you THE THING Quarterly, an “object-based publication” whose subscribers receive artist-designed objects rather than a print magazine, Jonn Herschend and Will Rogan have edited this delightful tome: The Thing The Book. Described as a “monument to the book as object,” Herschend and Rogan went about putting together the book as one would an exhibition. Participating artists (Lawrence Weiner, Miranda July, David Shrigley, Ed Ruscha and so many others) contributed essays, drawings, appropriated texts, non-sequiturs, errata and marginalia, all inspired by the form, function and conventions of the book as a thing. The result is a playful, irreverent compendium—including a table of contents as well as an index that have nothing to do with the pages in between, rambling footnotes throughout, a kineograph in the top right corner, bookmark ribbons and an obscene errata slip—that bears little continuity between its constituent parts. In much the same way as those pedagogical maps meant to illustrate every type of obscure geographical feature (with the requisite peninsula, isthmus and archipelago), The Thing The Book succeeds in prodding the imagination and inviting the reader to consider what a book is and could be.
2. Lakes and Reservoirs, Matthew Brandt
Publisher: Damiani in collaboration with Yossi Milo Gallery (July 2014)
€50
Cover of Lakes and Reservoirs, Matthew Brandt
Matthew Brandt’s series Lakes and Reservoirs involves those selfsame lakes and reservoirs as more than subject matter. Each C-print in the series was submerged in water collected from the source of its subject, so in a sense, the water, inasmuch as an inanimate object, or, in this case, a body of water, can be an active collaborator in the artistic process, makes its own mark on the photograph. These unique photographs are more surprising looking than one would think, with washes of residues and oils and swirling and shifting the colors of the picture. There’s a sense of poignancy here too, as these vibrant colorations doubtless result from the level of pollution present in the water.
3. The Box, Paul McCarthy
Publisher: Catje Hantz (April 30, 2014)
€38
Cover of The Box, Paul McCarthy
There are a few things we know Paul McCarthy is quite fond of: bodily fluids, perverted Disney characters, ketchup, butt plugs… He’s also fond of inverting images, something he has done since the early 1970s, particularly of architecture. In 1999, he rotated a replica of his entire studio on a 90 degree axis, along with the 3,000 objects inside. Titled The Box, it was exhibited at the Neue Nationalgalerie in 2012, which occasioned this exhibition catalogue. Echoing the artwork’s intent and form, the catalogue’s pages, with text in both German and English, are printed in a radical fashion, with half of the pages appearing upside-down—an exercise in frustration for you, the reader, which you’ll certainly, if a bit grudgingly, accept as totally brilliant.
4. Lee Lozano: Dropout Piece, Sarah Lehrer-Graiwer
Publisher: Afterall Books, One Work series (2014)
$ 35 hardcover, $ 16 paperback, $ 12 e-book
Cover of Lee Lozano: Dropout Piece, by Sarah Lehrer-Graiwer
Part of the One Work series by Afterall Books, in which one author takes an extended look at one work of art, Sarah Lehrer-Graiwer took it upon herself to study a work of art that has/had no definitive date, object or exhibition, and may or may not have taken place at all: Lee Lozano’s Dropout Piece. Drawing upon Lozano’s personal notebooks, in which she recorded ideas for her (often unrealized) “Life-Art” conceptual pieces, Lehrer-Graiwer investigates the origins and outcomes of Dropout Piece, first mentioned in her notebooks in 1970, which entailed the artist’s gradual but complete withdrawal from art and the art world. A fascinating read, particularly for those who have ever fantasized about leaving it all behind.
5. Pikin Slee, Viviane Sassen
Publisher: Prestel (May 19, 2014)
$ 49.95
Cover of Pikin Slee, Viviane Sassen
All light and shadow, angles and textures, Viviane Sassen’s Pikin Slee is an absolutely gorgeous collection of photographs. A fashion photographer by trade and reputation, the Dutch artist here strays into the territory of close-cropped landscapes—palm fronds figure prominently—and still-lifes of quotidian objects—buckets, gourds, string, plastic wrap—along with figurative photographs of the inhabitants of a village in Suriname named Pikin Slee that she took as her subject. The project could be accused of some form of exoticism, but the images feature such banal objects and views that the only thing they reveal is the astonishing acuity of Sassen’s eye for composition.
Sample spread, Pikin Slee, Viviane Sassen
Publisher: Koenig Books (October 31, 2014)
$ 90
Cover of Bernadette Corporation: 2000 Wasted Years
This survey of the artist collective Bernadette Corporation extends from the eponymous retrospective held at Artists Space in New York in 2012. Forming in New York in the 1990s, Bernadette Corporation’s work centers around the notion of image; the exhibition, with its awkward mannequins and timelines, suffered slightly for its physicality. This sleek but hefty volume more than makes up for that, offering the complete history of the collective, with photographs and essays, as well as an insert of an excerpt of the novel Reena Spaulings.
7. Made in L.A. 2014, Connie Butler, Michael Ned Holte
Publisher: Prestel with the Hammer Museum (June 3, 2014)
$ 49.95
Cover of Made in L.A. 2014, by Connie Butler, Michael Ned Holte
The 2014 Hammer Museum’s biennial of Los Angeles artists, Made in L.A., was often described as containing “shows within a show,” featuring not only artists in its roster of participants, but also artist-run exhibition spaces like Public Fiction and LAMOA (Los Angeles Museum of Art), and other alternative venues like KCHUNG Radio. Design-wise, the exhibition catalogue reflects this impulse; it comes in two volumes, a catalogue and a reader, contained in an attractive slipcase, along with pop-out inserts featuring more in depth material about particular artists. Its contents go beyond the purview of the usual exhibition catalogue, including not only histories of the artists and photographs, but also writing by and from the artists, and even a smattering of poetry.
8. Tectonic, Johan Rosenmunthe
Publisher: SPBH Editions (October 2014)
40 GBP
Cover of Tectonic, Johan Rosenmunthe
An interest in stones and what they have symbolized over the millennia drives Danish artist Johan Rosenmunthe’s latest work. He has staged performances of crystal healings, an installation of rocks gathered from the church of Scientology and now this book Tectonic. Rosenmunthe’s photographs are a mix of alchemy and modern technology, critical distance and a healthy portion of mystery, here accompanied by an excerpt of the famous 1850 text “A Suggestive Inquiry into the Hermetic Mystery” by Mary Anne Atwood. With a cover of shimmering Corvon Illusio material, this book is a lustrous jewel.
Sample spread, Tectonic, Johan Rosenmunthe
Publisher: Phaidon Press (May 5, 2014)
$ 125
Sample spread, Bruce Nauman: The True Artist, by Peter Plagens
At 288 pages, somehow bound with fluorescent orange thread, and a wrap-around hardcover, this book is a hefty tome—reflective of the long and varied career of Bruce Nauman, “the true artist” as author Peter Plagens posits. Plagens, an artist, critic and former neighbor of Nauman, has enjoyed a long standing friendship with the artist over many years, resulting in a text chock full of amusing anecdotal information.
Sample spread, Bruce Nauman: The True Artist, by Peter Plagens
10. Damage Control: Art and Destruction Since 1950, Kerry Brougher, Russell Ferguson, Dario Gamboni
Publisher: DelMonico-Prestel, with the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (November 2013)
$ 60
Cover of Damage Control: Art and Destruction Since 1950, by Kerry Brougher, Russell Ferguson, Dario Gamboni
Although this exhibition catalogue was technically published in late 2013, I’m including it in this list because the exhibition has been on the road throughout 2014, from the Hirshhorn in Washington D.C., to the Musée d’Art Moderne Gran-Duc Jean in Mudam, Luxembourg and finally to Kunsthaus Graz in Austria where it will be on view until March 15, 2015. Damage Control is essentially bookended by the detonation of the atomic bomb and the disaster of September 11th: two vividly visual acts of unthinkable destruction. The book chronicles art’s response to the existential dilemmas of the atomic age and the post 9/11 era, along with general reflections on the creative destructive force. Lucio Fontana slashing canvas; Ai Weiwei smashing a Han dynasty vase; Laurel Nakadate in a girl scout uniform as the twin towers burn behind her; Chris Burden firing a gun at a commercial jet overhead; SUPERFLEX flooding a replica of a McDonald’s; Christian Marclay dragging a guitar behind a moving vehicle; Gordon Matta-Clark slicing a house in half; Pipilotti Rist smashing out car windows with a gleeful grin; Michael Landy systematically destroying all of his possessions—Damage Control is crowded with so many surprising, exuberant and supercharged works of creative destruction, the book is incredibly hard to put down. And once you do, you might feel compelled to smash something, for art, or just for the fun of it.

Kiran Desai: The World Arrived in Books

Because she spent her childhood in an India, that had not yet opened its doors to the larger world, Indian novelist, Kiran Desai, had only her knowledge from books to rely on, before she later became an immigrant.

“We read as if we were exiles”, says Desai of the long summer afternoons spent reading in her home in Delhi. The beloved bookshelf of Desai’s childhood was full of international books, from Truman Capote to Fyodor Dostoyevsky to Virginia Wolf. This proved an advantage, when she, as a teenager, moved to America and experienced a great cultural difference: “Those books had allowed me to become a more successful and humane traveller. No matter how great the difference seemed, between India and the rest of the world, I did have that humane place of books.”

The displacement she has experienced, as an immigrant, has been helpful to Desai as a novelist, as she considers this sense of displacement to be something you also seek out in art: “You read a book to be able to transform yourself.”

Kiran Desai is an Indian novelist born in 1971 in New Delhi, India. Her first novel Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard was published in 1998 and was praised by fellow authors such as Salman Rushdie and awarded the Betty Trask Award. Desai’s second novel The Inheritance of Loss won the 2006 Man Booker Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Fiction Award. In 2013, she was awarded a 2013 Berlin Prize Fellowship at the American Academy in Berlin.

Kiran Desai was interviewed by Marc-Christoph Wagner at the Louisiana Literature festival August 2012 at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Denmark.

Tune in Saturdays at 10/9c

With some help from his friends, Flex manages to land a stand-up job at a big comedy club. Although this is the break Flex has been hoping for, he’s nervous that he’s not ready for such an important gig. Can he get the crowd to laugh or will they turn on him?

Flex and Shanice realized that they needed to take their wedding vow “for richer or poorer” to heart, so with their two adorable kids, 12-year-old Imani and 10-year-old Elijah, in tow, they moved into a rental home and brought their hilarious extended family into the mix to help cover the cost. A total of nine people, including Shanice’s “momager” Crystal, make this truly a full house where anyone’s business becomes everyone’s business.

Mountaineers Books Climbing Training for Peak Performance

Mountaineers Books Climbing Training for Peak Performance

This book is for climbers of all ages, abilities, and interests who wish to improve their performance. It is for weekend warriors who enjoy 5.6s yet desire to lead 5.10s, and for mountaineers interested in moving faster at altitude. It is for ice climbers who want to move more efficiently over frozen terrain and big wall climbers who want to increase their stamina. The standard concept of training for climbing has long been, just climb While that may suffice for a few gifted individuals, this philosophy has also resulted in countless climbers reaching performance plateaus and suffering recurring injuries. Even after the benefits of training began to be recognized, many of the regimens developed by climbers were physiologically unsound some were downright dangerous. Climbing Training for Peak Performance carefully details the foundation and fundamentals of nutrition for mind and body, flexibility training, aerobic, and strength conditioning, and how to put it all together to help you perform better. Diet-Busters Superbook Two Books about Losing Weight by Knowing Your Archetype of Power & Releasing that Natural Energy)

Diet-Busters Superbook Two Books about Losing Weight by Knowing Your Archetype of Power & Releasing that Natural Energy)

This book covers my unique view on weight loss and vitality which I would call the esthetic-spiritual flow of life theory. You can’t buy your way to weight-loss. It comes down to the strength in your spirit. All the diet books, exercise equipment, weight-loss programs and diet food in the world is a lie next to this one thing. You have to respect yourself highly if you want to lose weight. This is not a technical, physiological book about losing weight or a book about health. There are thousands of those around. If you want basic nutritional information, go to #611 613 at the library, read some of my other books. Find health cookbooks at #641. Get the free catalog from the government’s Consumer Information Center (Pueblo, CO 81009, 888-8pueblo, publications. usa.gov) which offers many nutritional booklets for either free or a buck or two. Go to usda dot gov or mypyramid dot gov for the Food Pyramid Guide. This book is about how I stay at a moderate weight regardless of what eat. I generally do physical activities as part of my regular lifestyle but I have gone through periods of time without any physical activity because I was injured. I didn’t gain weight because it was a mental-spiritual-esthetic relationship with food and life as I will explain later. The first few sections about losing weight are my thoughts written at different times so you may find some repetition there. Take it in stride as food for thought, pun intended. I’m not a doctor nor do I make any health claims. In fact, I think most so-called experts parading about with some credentials from the system are full of crap anyway. It’s not like it’s rocket science. It’s intuition and common sense. You don’t hide behind some pieces of paper the system gave you that says you’re a good clone. Whatever wisdom they can give you is everywhere. It’s common knowledge. Virtually all the system clone experts out there are all brainwashed by the same thing which is their clinical, piece

Maya’s Aura: the first two books

Maya’s Aura: the first two books

The first two novels in the “Maya’s Aura” series are merged into this book. The first book “Maya’s Aura – the Awakening”The second book “Maya’s Aura – the Refining”Young Maya hated the name that her aging hippie mother had saddled her with. She hated her dead-end job in a San Francisco coffee shop that didn’t pay enough to allow her to rent her own apartment. She hated trying to make do with clothes from the thrift shops that never quite fit her, and always smelled musty. She hated that she was allowed only one week’s vacation, and she could only save enough money to couch surf with friends. During her one week vacation couch surfing in Vancouver and spending days on the university’s beach, something happened that she could not explain. She felt someone’s aura, or at least that is what she thought had happened. Curiosity made her try to feel it again and again. Slowly she began to realize that this aura thing was more than just a good feeling. Much more, powerfully more, dangerously more, and she ceased to be the mousy young girl that cleaned tables in a coffee shop. About the AuthorSkye Smith is my pen name. My family convinced me not to use my real name because they feared that predators would use the internet to find me. You’ll understand why as you fall in love with sweet Maya, my main character. I wish I could use my own name, but I can’t. Sorry. Originally I set out to write a story about vampires and witches, but those have been done to death in eBooks, so instead I gave Maya a strong aura, which allowed her to sense the presence of psychopaths. As I wrote the novel I came to realize that vampires are just psychopaths that stay up late and drink blood. Or maybe psychopaths are just vampires that have swapped their blood habit for good old fashioned greed, power, and lust.

Free Books: Marketing Genius or Devaluation of Writers?

2014-07-29-Buymybookitsfree_r.jpg

Heard at a recent garage sale: “I always take free stuff even when I’m not sure I want it. I mean, it’s FREE; I can always throw it out!

Contemporary culture seems to have a conflicted relationship with free. People will hip-check each other to get to a neighborhood “free box” first, then get suspicious when eager salesmen dangle promotional freebies to close a sale. We all love a free meal but will still wonder what’s wrong with business that the restaurant is offering it. We can rationalize downloading music without payment, yet barely blink when art is auctioned for millions on the basis of “perceived artistic value.”

Then there are books, given away by the boatload in “free book promotions” in hopes of snagging that ever-more desirable demographic: the e-book reader. As the format surpasses all others in global book sales, the seduction of this burgeoning audience has become the mission statement of all book sellers, including indie authors, making Amazon’s brainchild promotion the Holy Grail.

To the uninitiated, the “free book promotion” is a strategy whereby writers offer their e-books free-of-charge for a number of days during their Kindle Select enrollment period. The objective is to entice readers in hopes they’ll download your book, leave a review, stir up positive word-of-mouth, then come back to buy your other books that aren’t free. This presumes, of course, that you have other books; it also presumes those planned objectives are met.

Are they?

Depends who you talk to. Some authors report getting thousands of free downloads, winning higher Amazon rankings and heightened name awareness as a result. Others tout similar stats but lament the cost of sites like BookBub and others that charge $ 200+ to promote those free promotions. Still others contend that the strategy’s value has peaked, as the sheer glut of free product has lowered incentive for readers to ever pay for books (despite e-books already being cheaper than other formats). Writers themselves are conflicted.

I asked indie author, Martin Crosbie, who’s had tremendous success with his books, particularly his novel, My Temporary Life, his view of the strategy:

“If I had not had the ability to offer my book for free I would not have found the readers I have. Reduced and free pricing has been the difference for me between connecting with hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of readers each month as opposed to just a handful. Hopefully some of these tried and true methods will remain effective for a little while as we all scramble to increase our readership, because really, we’re not just selling books. We’re building our reader base; that’s where our real focus is.”

Most would agree, yet some believe the proliferation of freebies has permanently altered the landscape, both in the perceived value of writers and their work and the mindset of readers who’ve become habituated to not paying for books. Literary agent, Jill Corcoran, makes that point in her piece, “The Devaluation of Writers, By Writers“:

“I get it, we all want our books to be read… getting your foot in the door/getting your e-book on anyone and everyone’s e-reader is the first step to [hopefully] selling these buyers your second book. BUT, if your self-pubbed book is free, and, according to bookgorilla, John Green’s THE FAULT OF OUR STARS e-book is worth $ 3.99, then all of us in publishing will need to downsize our houses, our food bill, our lifestyles because unless you are selling a heck of a lot of books, at $ 3.99 or 1/8th of $ 0.99 or at the golden ‘price’ of FREE, we have all just devalued ourselves to a point of below the already pitiful American minimum wage.” [Emphasis added.]

And what about the readers? Where are they in all this? Seems they’re as conflicted as everyone else! Some readers have been quoted as saying they’re not likely to read all the free books on their Kindles, having hundreds they’ve never even opened; others admit they haven’t gone back to buy from writers from whom they’ve downloaded free books. Some say they don’t worry about the quality of what they’ve downloaded because “they were free… I can always delete them”; others say they do prefer better books but can’t rationalize paying for them when so much free product is available.

My opinion? I’ll see your contradictions and raise you some!

One can understand scrambling for readership any way possible; as an indie author marketing my own novel, I get it! But beyond the loss of income, there’s also — at least in my opinion — that issue of quality. With countless sites built on the free/bargain book paradigm, product demand has increased exponentially. Which means for every high-quality writer like Crosbie, there are scores of lesser writers flooding the marketplace with poorly written and produced books that still find ready readership more focused on cost than quality. That bodes ill.

And, frankly, the strategy is limited. If readers don’t return to pay full price for your book, you’re out (and why would they if they’ve already gotten it free?). If readers download that free book but never read it, they won’t be talking about it; hence, no word of mouth. And if you don’t yet have other books to sell during a free promotion… well, that’s as far as it all goes until, maybe, you do.

Which is why writers are endlessly admonished to not spend too much time on marketing but “write, write and WRITE MORE!!” And while it’s always important for writers to write (and when you’re self-marketing a book, balancing those two tasks can be formidable!), too often the rather vigorous push to do so suggests that cranking out book after book is the paramount goal, ratcheting pressure to the point that some writers actually question if “it’s OK to forego professional editing just so I can get this new book up before my promotion.”

NO. It’s not. Not ever. But if the strategy bullies any writer into cutting corners and delivering sub-par books to feed the beast (and we all know there are lots of those out there), it has become counter-productive.

Donna Tartt took over ten years to write her Pulitzer Prize winning novel, The Goldfinch (and it’s only her third book). The great Harper Lee, author of To Kill a Mockingbird, published only one book in her lifetime (albeit, a masterpiece). Many of our most respected authors take years to hone their finely crafted literary works before ever thinking of entering them into the marketplace. Unless one is satisfied just cranking out unspectacular books, indie writers should hold to the same literary standards. Because, ultimately, it’s the quality of what we create that endures, that makes us truly successful writers, not our ranking, not how many free downloads we get; not how many books we post on our Amazon page.

And lastly, why should writers be expected to give their work away on such an expected and persistent basis? Writing is our commodity, our trade. Many of us have spent years honing our craft and gaining the necessary experience to attract meaningful work and appropriate remuneration. Other skilled professionals aren’t expected to repetitively work for free, why should writers? Bestselling author Dean Wesley Smith takes on that question with so many common sense points in his Killing Sacred Cows series, I’ll just leave you with this link: Killing the Top Ten Sacred Cows of Indie Publishing: #9… You Must Sell Books Cheaply. Once you’re done here, go read it; it’s very illuminating!

I remain an optimist, though, hopeful that the more judicious and market-savvy amongst us will realize there’s something culturally essential in supporting quality writers and their work… and with marketing dollars! Until then, I hope readers will, both, enjoy their freebies and repay the favor by fulfilling their end of the deal: reading the book, spreading the word, leaving a thoughtful review… and paying full price for their next one!

The Whalesong Trilogy together in one easy-to-read omnibus, including:WHALESONG (#1)The play of light and shadow, sea and sky; tropical breezes and the chill breath of arctic ice mountains; the mystery of Leviathan, greatest of all God’s creatures, of endless undersea caverns, of krill beds stretching miles in all directions and hundreds of fathoms deep, of the Ice at the End of the World, of the haunting song of the humpback whale. And “sehnsucht,” that insatiable longing wakened by the siren song of the sea, calling us back to its dark depths: these are the elements woven into a tapestry of wonder and enchantment by Robert Siegel. Here is the story of Hruna the humpback whale, from birth marked for greatness by his size and courage. As days of carefree frolicking give way to adolescence, Hruna prepares for the Lonely Cruise, the rite of passage into adulthood, by visiting the Great Whale who lives on the ocean floor. There he learns the myth of origins and receives his true name in preparation for the swift adventures and narrow escapes that propel him into the ultimate challenge of leading his pod of whales in a desperate fight for survival.WHITE WHALE (#2)Whalesong introduced Hruna, a humpback whale, in an ecological parable of personal and spiritual growth. Now, in WHITE WHALE, meet Hruna’s son, Hralekana, and enter a deep sea world that dazzles and delights. As he swims the oceans of the world, Hralekana, a magnificent great white whale, recounts his birth and frolicsome childhood—how he was teased for being all white, how he soon outgrew all his playmates, and how he came to discover the other inhabitants of the sea. He share traditional whale legends and warnings: to beware of great white sharks, killer whales, the giant squid, and most especially, humans, who sometimes capture sea creatures and make them perform strange games to earn their food—something that only dolphins, as natural show-offs, actually enjoy.Growing and learning his pod’s feeding, mating, a

Archie The Friendly Spider, Kids Short Bedtime Story Books – 4 Book Bundle

Archie The Friendly Spider, Kids Short Bedtime Story Books – 4 Book Bundle

This is a collection of 4 books plus one bonus story (exclusive to this bundle). These are childrens short stories, following the adventures of Archie The Friendly Spider as he continues on his quest to ‘make friends and influence people’ See what others say about his adventures: ***Humor and suspense make a first rate children’s story: J Chambers: Top 50 reviewer*** “The three stories are well written and include the elements that make a good children’s story: humor, suspense, and just enough danger to give the story some tension without being too scary. Also, each story is short enough to hold a child’s attention. I don’t usually comment on book covers, but the cover art is pretty cute, giving Archie a child’s face instead of an anatomically correct spider’s head, which would have been really scary.” *** Good Bedtime Story: Roberta Karchner – Top 50 Reviewer *** “I’m not certain what age group would be able to easily read this, but it makes an excellent bedtime story for kids, including my own granddaughter who is enjoying exploring the world. There is danger, but not enough to stress out little kids. And they will relate well to being small in a very big world, just like Archie!” *** Lovely wee children’s book: Niknok *** “This is a really nicely written children’s book & the story is just the right length for the age group-not too long or short. I really enjoyed & it more importantly, so did my daughters!” *** Great book for 5/6 year olds: Granny Annie *** “Downloaded this prior to going on holiday with my grandchildren aged 5 and 3. The five year old loved it – although I needed to moderate some of the bigger words. The stories are just the right length for this age group. We read it several times over!” What’s Inside the cover: Book 1: Archie Looks For A Friend The Girl Next Door A Surprise Encounter Archie Finds A Friend Book 2: Archie’s Adventures Begin! Archie Gets Attacked! Archie’s Mum Meets His New Friends Agnes Is Thrown Away! Book 3: Edinburgh Z
