Versace Provides Travel Kits for Turkish Airlines Business Class Intercontinental Travelers

VERSACE FRESHENS UP: Duty-free shopping in airports can be a blood sport for harried travelers who tend to fall into two camps — killing time or crunched for time.
Turkish Airlines travelers can skip the last-minute blitz for moisturizer, lip balm and other in-flight sundries, since the carrier will be providing them with travel kits from Versace or Mandarina Duck. Business-class passengers taking intercontinental flights will get the Versace assortment. Female fliers will find socks, earplugs, a sleep mask, warning stickers, Versace lip balm, hand lotion, facial mist and a hair clasp all contained in a zippered orange case. The men’s version is slightly different and is stowed away on a black case. To keep the pearly whites intact, there are travel-size Colgate toothpaste tubes as part of the deal.
Staying squeaky clean is truly in fashion, as evidenced by Naomi Campbell’s viral “airport routine” video, which was filmed on a Qatar Airways plane. More than 1.4 million people have watched the five-minute spot on her YouTube channel. The supermodel breaks out her pre-packed plastic gloves to scrub down her business class surroundings, “cleaning anything that you touch or could possibly touch.”
Turkish Airlines isn’t just offering its business-class passengers some special pampering

Bristol Studio Offers Its Spin on Business Casual

Bristol Studio is showing itself to have quite the range with the Los Angeles label’s latest capsule.
The newest collection from the Los Angeles men’s line, which draws inspiration from founder and creative director Luke Tadashi’s love for basketball, has released its take on business casual. It’s good timing as much of the conversation around men’s is now focused on suiting and more tailored looks.
Bristol first previewed the line at the recently ended ComplexCon in Chicago and has now officially released it to the broader market.
“The reception at ComplexCon was strong,” Tadashi said. “People were definitely excited by the concept and curious as to how the concept came to life. As with any collection or project we do, it takes some explaining, so I would often explain the concept in great detail and from there they got even more stoked about the product because they understood the reason why it exists. I think the reversability factor is also important to note because that was something people always responded with awe to.”

A look from Bristol Studio.

The capsule includes reversible basketball shorts with a custom gray and yellow plaid or navy and white pinstripe retailing for $ 160, a $ 220 dress shirt with

Mia Becar Launches With Direct-to-Consumer Business Model to Sell Footwear

SURE-FOOTED: The direct-to-consumer footwear company Mia Becar is up and running.
The West Hollywood-based company was started by Betzabe “Betsy” Gonzalez and Carolina Lujan. Aiming to establish repeat customers, Mia Becar will offer monthly drops of capsule collections to try to keep shoppers coming back. The shoes retail from $ 575 to $ 875. “We thought this was the future of a luxury shoe brand. We want to keep the brand fresh. We also wanted to be able to control our message and our story.”
Gonzalez and Lujan were both born in Mexico and they studied shoe design and graduated from Arsutoria School in Milan in 2017. Their debut collection was inspired by the Golden Age of Hollywood and features such looks as D’Orsat pumps, peep-toe mules and stiletto booties.
Married to former New York Mets player Adrian Gonzalez, Betsy has lived in different cities over the years due to his Major League Baseball career. On the road, she noticed a need “for brands that supported noble causes, elevated women and held themselves to the highest standards.” Motivated partially by the belief that “good shoes simply make life better,” she and her cofounder Lujan visited numerous factories in Italy before starting their Italian-made footwear brand.

Kenneth Cole Reactivates Business

Changes are afoot at Kenneth Cole Productions for fall.
The 32-year-old accessories and apparel firm, which after an 18-year run as a public company went private in 2012, is starting to make some noise again.
Cole has redesigned its logo and Web site, will launch a multimedia ad campaign called “Courageous Class,” has elevated its women’s and men’s sportswear and accessories offerings for fall and will open a new prototype store on Bond and Bowery on the Lower East Side of Manhattan on Sept. 15, which incorporates both omnichannel strategies and social initiatives benefiting the neighborhood.
In a recent interview at the company’s headquarters, founder, executive chairman and chief creative officer Kenneth Cole and chief executive officer Marc Schneider described what prompted the rebranding of the business, which generates $ 1 billion in retail sales worldwide across all licenses and product categories.
Cole said he had an epiphany a few years ago and decided that “in an effort to revitalize and re-energize and make the company relevant again, that we needed to make some significant changes.” It became apparent, he added, that all the things the brand needed to be doing, it couldn’t do as a public company.

How To Succeed In Starting Your Own Business: A No-fail Plan For Achieving Financial Freedom How To Finish Rich

How To Succeed In Starting Your Own Business: A No-fail Plan For Achieving Financial Freedom How To Finish Rich

I, Spiros, G. Raftis, at age 26, started a manufacturing business because I was fired. I had no business plan, no real product, and more importantly, very little money -I was devastated. I had devoted maximum effort, abilities, and long hours as a salesman for the owners of the company; in fact, I bought shares. I was an owner and was fired. My decision to start my own business was to: PREVENT GETTING RIPPED OFF AGAIN. I was convinced I could do it. OWNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS AFFORDS THE ONLY OPPORTUNITY OF BEING DIRECTLY REWARDED – THE MAXIMUM RETURN OF ONE''S ABILTIY. I wrote this book to share practical advice with anyone starting a business. This is a no-nonsense book with non-MA-theories. More practical advise than theory. Most of the messages, lessons, and Chapters within are my experiences. I did not anticipate most of these events. I know now going into business one will have to face most of what is written in these pages. For example, I thought after one year in business, getting a loan from a bank would be easy. Instead, I got a lesson from my banker. I still remember his words: Spiros, if something happens to you, how does the bank get back the money it loaned you for your valve business? The bank does not want to run a valve company. The pages repeat ideas that have been proven to be valuable for anyone seeking success in starting a business. It is a must-read, must-buy book.

Trump Excels at Business, But He Has No Business in International Politics

Listening to Donald Trump’s egotistical take, you’d think his loud business personality translates perfectly into international politics. Mexico acting up? No matter; he’ll hop on the phone and curse Mexico out. China spiffing us in trade deals? Who cares! A solution is a phone call and an immature insult away. “Your country sucks, China!” Problem solved.

Except while that might work on TV, it would backfire in reality. As several commentators have already pointed out, Trump’s “refusal to act diplomatically [would be] catastrophic for the lead diplomat of the United States.” Diplomacy requires subtlety, tact and restraint — something everyone from Sun Tzu to Henry Kissinger agrees on. But screaming insults like a petulant toddler? That sort of behavior is best left on The Apprentice.

I’m not saying business experience has no place in politics. It obviously does. Outsiders bring valuable insights into the political process, and a more realistic representation of how business works — stressing restraint and negotiation over needless offense — translates extremely well into international diplomacy.

But Trump’s view of how his own bombastic business personality would play in the political realm is remarkably shortsighted. He speaks of countries as if they were individuals, and he acts like solutions to complex problems lie in three-word slogans. That pithy ideology might work for Trump’s personal life, but it would spell disaster if adopted by the president of the United States. In Trump’s worldview as presented thus far, one gets the impression that Israel-Palestine can be solved by a few stern phone calls and maybe a fancy steak dinner afterwards. If that fails, then bombs should do the trick. Yeah right.

Obviously, Trump’s oversimplification of international relations has appeal. Most people don’t have the background knowledge, the patience, or the time to truly consider the intricacies of, say, the development of ISIL. As Robert Greene writes in The 48 Laws of Power, short mantras have an intrinsic draw, a resonance that longer, more nuanced takes on things just don’t have. And that’s fine — for the average citizen. But the president of the United States, wielding a governmental branch clothed in immense executive power, should have a more thorough understanding of foreign policy.

He or she should understand that illegal immigration is not a problem the Mexican government alone can control, or that empirical evidence suggests undocumented immigrants actually commit less crime than native-born Americans. He or she should acknowledge that a disgusting phenomenon like ISIL has complex political, religious, and historical underpinnings that will not be, cannot be, dismantled by a few well-placed explosives — rhetorical or military. A responsible president should know that criticisms of China and Japan for manipulating currency should be restrained and qualified, to acknowledge (for example) Japan’s two decades of careful economic policy aimed at counteracting slumping fiscal performance. And so on.

Because in foreign policy, jabs aren’t taken lightly; and unlike in Trump’s business affairs, insulting a country ticks off a heck of a lot more people than the one person on the other side of the phone line.

Business isn’t simple; foreign policy isn’t either. If Trump wants to be taken seriously by the general electorate, he should demonstrate the nuanced understanding of foreign policy exemplified by candidates ranging from Jeb Bush to Hillary Clinton.

As things stand now, the world is far too dangerous and complex a place for Donald Trump to be at its helm, his hand hovering over the nuclear button, ready to shout “you’re fired!” at anyone who ticks him off.

The “People Power” Internet Business Superbook Five Books on Making Money Online

The five books on making money online are as follows: Book 1. Business Website, Collect Money, Send Things Book 2. Internet Selling (Sell on Your Website & on the Big Internet Stores) Book 3. Online Classified Ads Book 4. Internet Marketing, Website Optimization (Get Visitors to Your Website) Book 5. Computer-Internet Jobs-Business E-commerce lowers the cost of transmitting information and makes it accessible to everywhere on the planet in under a second. That’s great but that’s all it is, a faster, more accessible means to do business. If your product is not very good and you have problems running your business, e-commerce will not magically make you rich. Many players tried to make money from the internet itself like ebay, amazon, google, etc. but most failed. Many retail internet websites failed but some fared alright, the ones that had a niche market where the products they sold could be easily shipped by a delivery company and already established companies who merely put out a website to enhance their existing business. The major disadvantages of internet sales are as follows: Some things are meant to be sold in person like clothing, a car, flowers, etc. Some things are simply not condusive to being shipped because it costs too much like dog food, garden tools, etc. Customers are picky about some things, they complain a lot and there’s room for fraud. Consider vitamins. There are fakes and cheap knock-offs. If you buy a bottle at your local health food store, you feel safer than buying a bottle over the internet. The shipping costs make some things not amenable to being sold over the internet like small, inexpensive things where the cost of shipping is as much as the product itself. Anything that’s perishable can’t be sold. A big part of buying is impulse. You see something at the mall and buy it. Some products have to be inspected. You can’t get a feel for them over the internet. Some products don’t have enough buyers to justify a websit

Ivanka Trump Discusses Fashion and Business — But No Politics, Please

With an expanding signature collection of her own, an executive role at the Trump Organization and a father who’s poking the political hornet’s nest with his decidedly non-PC style, it’s safe to say Ivanka Trump has a lot going on.
Accustomed to operating in overdrive, the Wharton grad is now suiting up 3,500 Trump Hotel staffers in uniforms she designed. Trump handles design and the creative vision for the company’s nine existing properties and four yet-to-be-opened ones in Baku, Azerbaijan; Rio de Janeiro; Vancouver, and Washington, D.C. She also serves as executive vice president of development and acquisitions at the Trump Organization. With two young children and an equally ambitious husband in Jared Kushner, the self-described “American wife, mother and entrepreneur” may represent a different sort of bold-faced paradigm in the fashion business. While that alone is something of a feat, it is not a moniker the former model acknowledged in any way during an interview last week.
Speaking about her new uniform designs, Trump very much stayed on message. While she has cheered on her father Donald’s take-no-prisoners presidential bid to her nearly 1.7 million Twitter followers and 582,000 more on Instagram, she wasn’t about to engage on political matters. “I

Jos. A. Bank Veteran to Launch Online Men’s Business

A new player is poised to enter the men’s wear scene.
Steve Marshall, the former divisional vice president of merchandising for Jos. A. Bank Clothiers Inc., has teamed with some of his co-workers at the Hampshire, Md.-based chain to create Wilkes & Riley.
The business, which will launch in November as an online play, will offer a full collection of men’s wear, from tailored clothing and furnishings to sportswear.
“Retail has been in my blood since I was a kid,” Marshall told WWD. He started his career at Bugle Boy and moved on to Merry Go Round before joining Jos. A. Bank in 1999.
Marshall said he was offered the opportunity to remain with Bank by its new owners, Men’s Wearhouse, which purchased the business for $ 1.8 billion last year, but didn’t want to relocate to California, where the corporation is headquartered. So he opted instead to remain in Maryland and use the skills he had acquired over the years in sourcing and merchandising to open a new company.
Wilkes & Riley will be self-financed and Marshall said he has some other investors as well.
“I always wanted to run my own company and be the head of the ship,” he said. “Jos. A. Bank was a

Iowa’s Görtz Haus Learns That Refusing To Host Gay Weddings Is Bad For Business

The Christian owners of an Iowa wedding venue that turned away a gay couple in 2013 are shuttering their business.

Located in Grimes, Iowa, the Görtz Haus has been operating as an art gallery, bistro and wedding venue for 13 years, but has struggled financially in the two years since owners Betty and Richard Odgaard cited their Mennonite faith when they declined to host Lee Stafford and Jared Ellers’s wedding, USA Today and other outlets are reporting.

Stafford and Ellers quickly filed a discrimination complaint through the Iowa Civil Rights Commission, and although the Odgaards agreed to a $ 5,000 settlement, two heterosexual couples canceled their planned nuptials at the venue after the case hit the news. Although the deposits were non-refundable, both couples received their money back.

“We knew that the business was going to be in trouble almost immediately,” Richard Odgaard told The Daily Signal. “We had to get rid of the wedding business to avoid another complaint and possibly a higher penalty.”

“I would never discriminate in any area that’s not who I am. I just couldn’t celebrate their wedding because of my faith,” Betty Odgaard told KCCI.

In January, it was announced that the Görtz Haus would stop offering wedding services altogether, but the financial loss has been significant. Now the Odgaards say the business, which previously hosted between 15 to 25 weddings a year, will close, possibly as early as August.

Joking that they “didn’t get the Chick-fil-A response” from locals, the Odgaards say they think things might have turned out differently if their situation had been left to a popular vote or even an area judge.

“I think if people in Iowa would have had a chance to vote on this, it would have never have been this way. People in Iowa are pretty conservative,” Betty told The Daily Signal. Added Richard: “This was all administrative judgement. The [gay couple] had a platform to file their case and we didn’t get our day in court with a jury of our peers.”

Still, as The Des Moines Register points out, the Odgaards have received a fair amount of support. During a recent campaign stop in Iowa, Republican presidential hopeful Sen. Ted Cruz argued that the Odgaards were victims of “liberal fascism,” noting, “The modern Democratic Party has decided their devotion to mandatory gay marriage in all 50 states is so unforgiving that there is no longer room for defending religious liberty.”

Echoing those sentiments was Eric Baxter, senior counsel at the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty that represented the couple and aims “to protect the free expression of all faiths.”

“It’s shocking that the state prefers forcing Betty and Richard Odgaard to close the Görtz Haus Gallery, rather than allowing them make a living without violating their religious beliefs,” he told the Register in a statement.

Art & Business

“The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls” ~ Pablo Picasso (Spanish Painter, Sculptor 1881-1973)

Art is important to society, any society through the ages ナ combining art and business is not new. Think of the centuries where art and business were very much part of the citizen’s world. There were the royal courts who paid for, promoted and gave the arts a grand platform or of the Medici of Italy (14th to 18th centuries) or the maligned, then beheaded royals of France (10th to 19th centuries) they all created art, luxuries and businesses never seen before, which are valued to this day.

Today we seek beauty and have great philanthropies and organizations which give the arts a platform for a broader audience, never seen in its power and influence before. We now observe the merger of art and business in an environment enjoyed by millions in all corners of the globe. Shining a spotlight on art and cultural relationships and business provides a better understanding between people of diverse nations. The quest for better communications through the arts help define businesses. By associating with the arts, businesses have discovered that their brands are enhanced and increase their reach and in the end their profitability. With the mantra of ‘behind every art-form is a great visionary leader’, this would include the business of pursuing excellence in products and service, prestigious organizations and venues report great results.

Heidi Steiger, President of Topridge Associates, expresses her perspective on the increasing importance of art and business:

“I have always thought the business and art worlds should work closely together. The arts can bring progress to the world of business – by thinking, looking and acting outside-of-the-box. After all, mankind has been communicating in pictures since the dawn of the caveman. We have an overwhelming need to document, remember, and comment on the world in which we live. My most significant experience of this was managing the art collection at Neuberger Berman while I was also leading its private wealth management business. A number of my partners and I collected contemporary art. The rule was that art was on public walls and not in our offices. Asset management is a very intellectual pursuit, but art made us more approachable and human to our clients. It said we cared about them and that we viewed the world through a different lens which provided us with insightful ideas resulting in good performance in their portfolios.”

Greg Furman, Chairman and CEO of Luxury Marketing Council, has observed the many changes in the field of luxury for more than twenty years. His expert opinion is shared by many
“As the disparity between ‘the have’ and ‘the have nots’ continues to widen, public, government and media scrutiny are increasingly critical, and all luxury brands’ involvement in the community will dramatically increase. More than ever luxury brands must be involved, and seen as being involved, as outstanding corporate citizens; not as disengaged, haughty, removed purveyors of luxury products and services to the elite one percent with no concern for the bigger picture and larger community. As never before it is imperative for luxury brands to more tastefully and aggressively promote their involvement in the arts. Creativity and bottom-line-driven understanding are essential to maintaining and enhancing
the luxury brand’s reputation.”

It is said that beautiful objects in art, in design, in furniture, in fashion, in poetry are all an extension of the human spirit’s need and search for beauty. Art takes us through the tunnel of life to lightness and joy. The patronage of the arts also fulfill the dreams on every level of life and it is significant now and for future generations. The strong reputation and joint goals of art and business have gone through periods of challenge and growth. Artistic disciplines combined with business acumen address the complex and ever-changing needs of building robust arts and business communities with ever greater success.

” I do not want art for a few any more than education for a few or freedom for a few” ~ William Morris (English artist, poet 1834-1896)

My Business Almost Cost Me My Marriage

One Saturday afternoon while driving to the mall, I expressed concern to my husband over our relationship. Nothing was really wrong, we weren’t arguing or fighting. In fact, we weren’t really talking much at all — that was the problem. More and more, I felt as though I were living with a roommate, not a lover.

We’d sit side-by-side on our recliners each night, but never said more than five or six words to one another. There was no connection.

On this drive I looked over and said, “Babe, I’m worried that if we don’t get on the same page

“I’ve thought the same thing,” he replied.

I was stunned. I felt like someone had sucker-punched me in the stomach. He’d thought the same thing? He’d considered divorce? What? When? Why hadn’t he said anything? If I hadn’t said anything, would he have?

I swallowed hard and said, “You have? OK, then it’s a good thing we’re talking now. What are you feeling?”

My husband isn’t one to share his feelings or emotions, so I knew that I was making a tall request. And in a split-second, it was as if a dam had burst. He began telling me, firmly and deliberately, his perspective on our marriage.

Many of his concerns were valid. I’m not the best housewife. I’ve never enjoyed cleaning, which is why we have a housekeeper come twice a month. I do let my daughters dress themselves, which means that at times they walk out of the house looking a little crazy. I let dishes sit overnight and I’m ok with a pile of books and papers stacked at the bottom of the staircase.

And then he hit me with, “I resent your business.”

“I know this could blow up for you, I can see that. But I don’t see what your business is doing for our family,” he continued on. As he spoke, I heard his words in slow motion.

How could he be saying this to me? I thought we were making progress? Just this past year we had been accepted into a couple’s mastermind program and I thought he was finally starting to climb on board with the business — our – business.

But I said nothing. I listened. I validated. And then I shared my own concerns about our marriage.

I felt lonely. I felt like I was a single mom who happened to live with the father of her children. I wanted a partnership. I wanted to know that we were equally sharing the load of maintaining a household and raising our children.

He wanted us to establish roles. I wanted him to be more present. He wanted to see the financial impact of my business. I wanted to talk to him about the numbers. He wanted to see the numbers, but wanted nothing to do with business talk.

In talking for nearly two hours, we realized we both wanted the same things, we just wanted them in different ways.

My story isn’t unique. In fact, in speaking with many of my entrepreneurial colleagues, this story is the norm and the exceptions are those rare, unicorn-like partners who are completely supportive, 100% on board and who are interested in helping the business in any possible way.

The rest of us have to battle with a variety of scenarios ranging from not-at-all supportive to kind-of-supportive when it’s convenient and everything in between.

So how do we divorce-proof our marriages while also following our passion and confidently building the business of our dreams?

The truth is, you really can’t “divorce-proof” a marriage. There’s no set it and forget it system. It takes intentional action every single day.

Notice I used the word action and not work. Too many people say marriage is work. And that’s part of the problem. We’re treating our relationships like business transactions — scheduling, planning, creating to-do lists — rather than treating them as opportunities for loving acts of kindness.

Here are three steps you can take to ‘divorce-proof’ your marriage and keep your business:

1. Establish Roles

When my husband looked at me and said, “There are certain roles men and women have,” I literally rolled my eyes and considered slapping him in the face. What, are we back in the 1950’s? I immediately made assumptions about what “roles” he believed I should fill.

But as we began talking, I realized he didn’t necessarily mean that my role had to be the “traditional stay-at-home mom.” More so, he meant that we each needed to identify what position we were playing on our marital team.

Who was the dishwasher? Who was the checkbook balancer? Who cooked and on what days? Who made the bed? Who made the coffee? Who took the kids to school and who picked them up? Who gave them baths and who read the bedtime stories?

Once we sat down and went through our list of responsibilities and divided up the workload there was an immediate shift in our energy. We both breathed a sigh of relief.

As you consider your own relationship, ask yourself, “Do we have our roles and responsibilities defined or are we just leaving it up to chance, assuming one of us will get it done?”

If you’re each thinking the other should do it, but it’s never been clearly defined, you’re setting yourself up for disappointment and resentment. Make the change right now.

2. Have a Monthly Money Date

As an entrepreneur, you should already be having a monthly money date with yourself to make sure you know exactly how much you’re bringing in and where it’s all going. But if you’re married, then you should definitely consider sequestering your love for a desert night out with your financial statement and look over the numbers together.

Not only does this keep you accountable as the CEO of your business, but it also helps your partner see how your business is (or can) impact your financial future.

A quick note: If you’re not making money in your business yet, that’s okay. Have your money date anyway and let your spouse know your projections for the following month or explain why you invested where you did and the return you expect to get. Transparency is key.

3. Make an Excuse

The most important of all, make an excuse to spend time with your spouse and to meet their needs! The chief complaint most partners make of their entrepreneurial mates is, “She’s always on the phone or computer working.”

Your partner only feels this way because his or her needs are not being met. If your spouse has ever said to you, “You work too much,” it’s their way of saying, “You’re not giving me what I need.”

Make an excuse every single day to do something for your partner. Shutting down your laptop an hour earlier, preparing a favorite meal or just sitting next to each other, holding hands while watching some mindless show. Think of your partner and do something that would make them feel thought of, loved and more important than your business.

Take action right now: Grab a sheet of paper and make a list of 30 simple things you could do for your partner. That’s your action plan for this month! Remember, your time and attention are the most valuable gifts you can give the person you love. Be sure and add that in a few extra times.

I almost lost my marriage because I wasn’t doing these 3 simple things. Ever since we’ve made these steps common practice in Casa de Luna, it’s as though a new relationship has sprung. My husband and I are working together as a team, he’s amazing with the kids – especially the few evenings each month when I have coaching calls – and overall, our house feels like a loving, supportive, encouraging home.

The key is infusing LOVE into each step. Because after all, isn’t that what we all want most – to love and be loved?

Now over to you. Which of these steps will you implement first? Do you have your own story of how your business has threatened your relationship? Let’s chat in the comments.

And if you’re looking for more tips on how to confidently build your business and still have fulfilling relationships, be sure to sign up for my FREE Confident Entrepreneur Webinar Series. We’re covering everything from time management, leadership, decision-making and more! Click HERE to sign up.

The Wrecking Crew Movie CLIP – Wreck the Business (2015) – Documentary HD

What the Funk Brothers did for Motown… The Wrecking Crew did, only bigger, for the West Coast Sound. Six years in a row in the 1960s and early 1970s, the Grammy for “Record of the Year” went to Wrecking Crew recordings. And now, THE WRECKING CREW tells the story in pictures and that oh, so glorious sound. THE WRECKING CREW is a documentary film produced and directed by Denny Tedesco, son of legendary late Wrecking Crew guitarist Tommy Tedesco. The film tells the story of the unsung musicians that provided the backbeat, the bottom and the swinging melody that drove many of the number one hits of the 1960’s.

Strictly Business

Strictly Business

The night Bethany catches her fiancé in bed with two prostitutes and snorting cocaine, should have been the worst moment of her life. But it isn’t. That comes the next morning when she finds herself naked in bed with Alexander Kirkwood, a successful, Chicago-based businessman, and no recollection of how she’d got there. All she knows is that they’ve had sex. Hard and wild, and several times over, if her patchy memory is to be believed. But her slide towards chaos does not stop there. Nick her ex-fiancé, has been stealing from her personal and business bank accounts to fund his drug and prostitute habit. Bankrupt and homeless, Bethany fights to keep her fledgling, bio-cosmetics business “As Nature Intended” going. Rescue arrives in the unlikely form of Alexander “Xander” Kirkwood. Bossy, arrogant, controlling – everything that Bethany hates in a man – Xander offers his significant business expertise and mentorship in exchange for Bethany back in his bed. But the consequence of Nick’s action has far-reaching consequences which threaten not just Bethany’s life and reputation but Xander’s too. Contains graphic language and sizzling sex scenes. Excerpt from Strictly Business”…women are best suited to the bedroom, not the boardroom.”The comment, made by the dark-haired man seated to the right of the empty chair, raised a loud murmur of laughter from the other guests at the table. Bethany glanced at the name plate against the vacant chair, hoping that she was mistaken. No. Tonight, her luck was running true to form. “Bethany Green, As Nature Intended – Director” was written in fine calligraphy on the place setting in front of the empty seat next to the chauvinist bore. She gripped the back of the chair, her knuckles white, as she nodded to her fellow guests.”Ms. Bethany Green?” The man to her right, the same man, stood up to pull out her chair. “It’s a pleasure to meet you. I’ve been hearing a lot about you.”His after-shave was light and, combined with the scent of his skin, th

The Business of The Band Wagon at Encores!

2014-11-04-bandwagon4.jpg

Who even watches The Band Wagon anymore? Well, my daughters do, Lea and Sara, ages eleven and nine. The Band Wagon may be their favorite movie musical.
Fred Astaire’s shoe shine. Cyd Charisse’s murderous gams. “Dancing in the Dark.” “Triplets” (especially). Even Oscar Levant’s delectably demented ineptitude singing and dancing “That’s Entertainment.”

News that Encores! here in New York is mounting a “new stage adaptation” of
The Band Wagon as a “Special Event” beginning Thursday filled my girls with wonder, and not a little moral outrage. “Why?” they cried!

All I could think to reply was: Why not?

I telephoned Douglas Carter Beane, one of our great living comedic dramatists (Lord, we need more), and the person credited with fashioning a new Band Wagon book for Encores! from the timeless screenplay by Betty Comden and Adolph Green.

“What have you done to the Band Wagon?” I asked Doug.

“Just a touch defensive, are we?” Doug more or less laughed. “I’ve simply made it into a stage show, as is my want, from time to time.

“I do have a good reason,” he went on. “Have you ever noticed that about two-thirds of the way into the movie, the story just stops and the film becomes a collection of musical numbers.”

“Yes,” I said. I had noticed that.

“Well,” said Doug, “I once asked Betty and Adolph why. And Adolph answered: ‘Because our contract at MGM was up. We sort of left town. We told MGM: You could pay us a lot of money and we’d stay an extra month to finish it. But MGM said no.’

“The rest of the movie,” Doug added, “was basically patched together by the director, Vincente Minnelli, and — as I understand it — Alan Jay Lerner wrote some uncredited connecting material.”

“Cool,” I said. Who knew?

“I became interested in trying to finish what Comden and Green started,” continued Doug. “I even told them what I was up to — as I ran into them over the years at various benefits and cocktail parties. And they told me things from their original screenplay that had been cut, including an old romance between the Fred Astaire character — the washed-up Hollywood hoofer Tony Hunter — and Nanette Fabray’s character, the lyricist Lily Martin. Who was a thinly-veiled version of Betty herself. Who was married in the movie to her songwriting partner, Lester Martin. Which was Comden and Green’s little inside joke on the common misperception that they, as a team, were married to each other. Which they were not!”

*

The Band Wagon is a 1953 movie musical about the creation of a Broadway musical — not just the making of it, but the actual business of producing it. The Band Wagon delights in show business nitty gritty. We see disastrous out-of-town tryouts and combustible rehearsals. We even see the roundelay of hardcore pitch-and-sell that gets a show off the ground: Tony Hunter being lassoed by his friends, the Martins, into signing on as the lead in their new musical on the basis of nothing more than a very pushy synopsis; the Martins and Hunter, in turn, together hyping the wunderkind actor-producer-director Jeffrey Cordova (marvelously over-played by Jack Buchanan) into taking on their project; with Cordova then hooking the prima ballerina Gabrielle Gerard (Charisse) and her boyfriend and choreographer, Paul Byrd (a snippy James Mitchell), by at first feigning disinterest in both of them for his show.

I realized that what interested me most about this new Band Wagon at Encores! was how it had come to be. And, more importantly, where it hopes to go.

Think Encores! and the producing of Broadway musicals, and one inescapably thinks of Chicago and Barry and Fran Weissler, the husband and wife producing pair who scooped up Chicago as a 1996 Encores! concert production and moved it to Broadway where it remains to this day — a monumental stage hit that was also made into a 2002 Academy Award-winning film (in contrary motion to The Band Wagon‘s path).

Sure enough, Mr. Weissler’s name soon surfaced in my chat with Mr. Beane. “Yes,” Doug allowed, “Barry first approached me in 2002 about adapting The Band Wagon. Barry’s idea was very complicated, with lots of flashbacks. Barry’s show was called Dancing in the Dark and it ultimately premiered at the Old Globe in San Diego in 2008. It got pretty good reviews but it didn’t quite have the magic to move on.

“Years passed — as they do,” noted Doug. “Then, this year, I got another call from Barry saying he had Kathleen Marshall as director for an Encores! production and would I be interested in looking at the show again. And I said, yes.”

I realized I needed to talk to Jack Viertel, to complete this circle, or cycle, if you prefer. As Encores! artistic director and a former commercial producer himself, Jack knew everything that I needed to know.

“I actually saw that Old Globe production,” Jack began. “I thought it very promising and very unfinished. Barry Weissler and I talk all the time anyway. Less than a year ago, the subject of The Band Wagon came up because he was retooling it. And he said to me, ‘Do you think this is something that Encores! would do?’ And I said, ‘Well no, not in our regular season, because it’s not a bona fide revival of an old Broadway musical.’ Though there is an old Broadway musical called The Band Wagon from 1929 that inspired the movie,” Jack added, parenthetically, “but it wasn’t remotely what the movie became, it was simply a revue; and one of the great ones.”

I did know that. Jack went on.

“I told Barry: We do have this Fall slot for a Special Event. It’s a fund raiser. We’re always interested in trying something that we haven’t tried before. The Band Wagon might make a very interesting Special Event. And it would give you, Barry, a chance to see your show up on its feet in its new version. Are you comfortable with having it seen and reviewed? Barry thought about this and came back to me and said: ‘Yeah.’

“That’s the lovely thing about having a Special Event spot now for Encores!” Jack concluded. “We can do whatever we like.”

This brought me to the subject of Broadway as a destination. “Your last Special Event moved,” I said to Jack, thinking of After Midnight, a nifty tribute to the nightclub revues of the Harlem Renaissance era that Encores! had created in collaboration with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra.

“Not quite,” Jack corrected me. “Our last Special Event was A Bed and a Chair, the Wynton Marsalis-Stephen Sondheim collaboration. But you’re right, two years ago, our Special Event, After Midnight, did move to Broadway.”

“How much does it factor into your Band Wagon equation,” I asked, “that it, too, might move?”

“You know, in one sense it doesn’t factor into it at all,” Jack answered. “We’re just trying to find shows that are entertaining for our audience and at least within the ballpark of what Encores! does. On the other hand, this is a rare situation, where Barry and Fran do have the first-class rights to produce The Band Wagon on Broadway and are just licensing us to do their show. Usually when we revive a show, like Finian’s Rainbow — which also moved to Broadway – we secure the rights ourselves.”

I thought of Joseph Papp and The Public Theater, which for years lived off the revenue generated by A Chorus Line. Papp was always unashamedly on the lookout for another money-making Broadway transfer to support his New York Shakespeare Festival. Was this at all true for Encores?

“No, ” said Jack. “That’s not why we do shows; not with the idea of moving them. Also, Joe Papp was mostly interested in new material. We do revivals. And it is my opinion that revivals — particularly those with 28-32-piece orchestras — are miserably hard to do commercially. That said,” added Jack, “it would be disingenuous for me to say that the success of Chicago has not generated funding for City Center in general, and Encores! specifically.

That’s what I figured.

2014-11-04-QhvYQBwePw5NfyC5AaYyUAjXOo6H1HmH6TBrJg5ytw.jpeg
This week’s Encores! production of The Band Wagon has a sensational cast: Brian Stokes Mitchell, stepping up for Astaire as Tony Hunter, Tracey Ullman (for heaven’s sake!) as Lily Martin, Michael McKean as Lester Martin, Laura Osnes as Gabrielle Gerard, Michael Berresse as Paul Byrd. I’m looking forward to seeing the show with my kids, to savoring Arthur Schwartz and Howard Dietz’s exquisite score, augmented, as I understand it, by some additional Schwartz-Dietz songs.

But I also can’t help thinking how much has changed in the way musicals are today sent to Broadway since The Band Wagon spectacularly spotlighted the process circa 1953. Not that that’s news. It’s just “Entertainment.”

3 Things Teaching Yoga Taught Me About Business

Practicing and teaching yoga taught me a lot about business. The uncanny parallels and lessons between the two is what I’m sharing today. Here are some potent lessons for your business that I first discovered via practicing and then teaching Yoga for almost a decade.

1. When you first start teaching you teach based on what you were taught. You don’t fully understand what it means to teach “your” version of yoga.

Many newbie teachers or teachers who haven’t yet made the teachings their own will rattle off the same phrases and instruction that their teacher taught them or that they read in their yoga training course.

The reason for this is they haven’t yet developed a complete understanding of the poses and the practice where they are ready to ditch the script and teach from their own experience. It takes time to truly see your students, and to develop a deep understanding of how the poses work and what they are meant to do.

It takes time and practice to truly see your students, and to recognize a hallmark lesson of teaching the poses from a deep consideration that “form follows function” (Something I first heard from Matthew Cohen, and if you’re lucky enough to live in Santa Monica you need to go to his class!)

The basic idea is that function is priority. The actual shape of the pose and what it looks like is secondary. But that means you need to deeply understand what they pose is there to do (deep knowledge) versus just parroting what the yoga text book says, or what a teacher taught you, or what the poses looks like (shallow understanding). And like anything in life it takes time to gather depth of knowledge.

The same thing happens in business: At first you’re taught a certain structure or template. You’re told all these business rules, and so you follow the rules. But with time and depth of experience you start to realize that in order to make your business your own, you need to ditch the rules, consult with your own inner CEO and make your own decisions.

This comes with time, depth of experience, and a willingness to be curious, open to learning and growth. And of course, to never ever follow a guru-mentality where some so-called “expert” or “though leader” says “Follow me, I have all the answers.”

2. In yoga, to become a teacher and to get a registration you need to do a minimum of a 200-hour yoga teacher training. This is a foundational course. What happens after this course is many people feel “not ready” to start teaching.

They start to feel that if they only did one more training, or one more workshop they’d be ready.

But the truth is you’ll never be ready if you don’t go out there, put yourself on the line and teach your first class.

I’ll never forget the first time my phone rang, a gym I applied to calling me last minute to sub a yoga class that night — a few hours away! My initial reaction was to make up some excuse of why I couldn’t do it. But thank god I said yes.

Was I ready? Well, not really, but I did it anyways, and you know what? I remember it being the time of my life. I remember thinking “I can’t believe I just pulled that off” and better yet, despite being a total newbie, I had students come up to me and thank me, and the next week the gym called me to offer that class to me on a permanent basis.

So here’s the deal: you will never feel ready. The only way to become ready is to jump in.

Now let me tell you, the first two years of teaching I was obsessively studying yoga on my own. All I did at home was read books about yoga, watch videos, practice to myself, practice with willing friends, and said yes to as many teaching opportunities that came my way.

As time went on, I didn’t even have to think about teaching — it came naturally.

Now did I take extra trainings? Yes, I took an apprenticeship, I often traveled to Los Angeles to study with my favorite teachers, but that was for the joy of it, and to enhance my own growth and learning.

The one thing that made me a better teacher was the actual teaching.

It was screwing up in class from time to time and learning from my action (p.s screwing up in class means you forget to teach a pose on one side of the body, but luckily your students will often remind you!)

The same holds true for business. Certainly, keep studying about your craft, and about business. Keep learning. There is so much you can learn on your own from books, videos, and when you feel called to it — from a course, or workshop. But don’t do it because you think you’re not good enough or because you think that one course is going to be the magic bullet to fix your business problems.

The only way to fix your business problems is to take action in your business and dare to make mistakes.

Dare to create things that may fail, and then learn and move onwards. I am a big fan of continuing education, and I continue to learn and take courses, and go on retreats for my personal self-care and self-development. But I do it for the joy of it, not because I think one more course will fix my problems. Sometimes a course, a book, a program, or a coach can help steer us in the direction we need to go, and give us perspective. However, you do not need to go broke or invest in things you don’t have the cash for.

I’ve seen it in Yoga where the newly trained teacher becomes an incessant consumer of the yoga industry: more programs, more trainings, more courses — just to feel “good enough” that one day they’ll be ready enough and knowledgeable enough to teach.

And I see it in business: people take a foundational business course (because we all need to start with something) and then they think they’re not good enough or not ready enough to get started so they keep taking course after course spending money they don’t have waiting to be ready to make that one-time six-figure launch, but all the while as they spend their savings on another course, they haven’t created anything.

They haven’t hustled or gone out of their comfort zone to actually get a client.

They hope that one more course will give them that lucky break.

But that day will never come. The only way to make that day come is to take action. Yes, learn, but then take lots of time to implement and take action. Even if that’s as simple as writing a blog post, keeping up with a newsletter, or starting to create your first product or offering. You need to start to make things happen.

3. I hate to say this but sadly, sometimes, you have to be careful who you trust.

People often think of yoga as spiritual and therefore kind, loving and generous.

However, I have experienced firsthand being lied to by a studio, having my intellectual property ripped off, and I’ve had friends who were duped out of tens of thousands of dollars in business deals gone wrong.

And in the business world, other entrepreneurs will sometimes rip off your stuff.

I don’t say this to paint a grim picture because I do believe that most humans are kind. But some people, when they are stretched, their true colors shine (and sometimes those colors ‘aint so pretty).

So my advice for diminishing betrayal is: Don’t betray yourself.

If you have a feeling like the person you are about to work for or work together with isn’t quite right, even if it looks all sparkly and shiny on the outside: well, stay away.

Because if you betray your own intuition and feelings, don’t be surprised if you get betrayed by that person later down the line.

This whole notion of betrayal being a reflection of your own self betrayal was something that became evident to me by two sources. One was in an interview where Bryan Elliot interviewed Cesar Millan — the famous Dog Whisperer — and Cesar talks about betrayal and the importance of having “your pact.” This is one interview I highly recommend, and you can catch it here.

Another place I learned about the power of betrayal was in a book called Soulcraft by Bill Plotkin (totally recommend this too.)

The lesson is: the best way to prevent betrayal in business is to make sure that you are not betraying yourself. Then, if it happens to you — use it as an opportunity to grow and explore the pain that comes from it.

You know yoga is meant to awaken us, to enlighten — which simply means to turn on the light. And it does this because it is so confronting. Well, let me tell you it is, and so is business.

Business is the greatest self-development and spiritual journey you can ever go on, if you dare to open to the practice of awareness and learn from what happens to you on the business journey.

If you can learn from the “good” and the “bad” then everything is ultimately a good experience, because it’s from the challenges that we grow (even though in the moment it does not feel fun)

It’s the challenges that help us become more powerful from the inside out and to trust ourselves at a deeper level, and to act with more honesty and integrity in our own lives.

Next-generation Business Intelligence Software with Silverlight 3

Business intelligence (BI) software is the code and tools that allow you to view different components of a business using a single visual platform, making comprehending mountains of data easier. Applications that include reports, analytics, statistics, and historical and predictive modeling are all examples of BI applications. Currently, we are in the second generation of BI software, called BI 2.0. This generation is focused on writing BI software that is predictive, adaptive, simple, and interactive. BI 2.0 implemented via RIA technology can truly bring out the power of BI and deliver it to an average user via the Web. Next-Generation Business Intelligence Software with Rich Internet Applications provides developers, designers, and architects a solid foundation of BI design and architecture concepts with Microsoft Silverlight. This book covers key BI design concepts and how they can be applied without requiring an existing BI infrastructure. Turns Out Booking R. Kelly To Play Your Music Festival Is Bad For Business

An Ohio music festival has found itself in a difficult position on the heels of its booking of controversial R&B singer R. Kelly as one of its headliners.

The Fashion Meets Music Festival, slated for Aug. 29-31 in Columbus, Ohio, has run into a number of troubles since they announced last month that Kelly would be playing their inaugural fest alongside jam band O.A.R. and Destiny’s Child alum Michelle Williams, among others.

Since then, two Ohio-based bands — Damn the Witch Siren and Saintseneca — have dropped out of the lineup since Kelly’s booking was made public and Sunday Columbus Alive reported that radio station WCBE 90.5 FM has withdrawn from sponsoring the festival, also due to Kelly’s participation in the event.

As WBEZ’s Jim DeRogatis notes, ticket sales for the “I Believe I Can Fly” singer’s performance at the festival — which start at $ 58.50 plus fees — also appear to be selling very slowly.

The pushback stems from Kelly’s past allegations of child pornography and sexual assault, a story DeRogatis helped break and Jessica Hopper detailed in a viral news story for the Village Voice in December 2013.

“We feel [R. Kelly’s] selection as a performer ignores his very serious allegations of sexual violence and assault,” Saintseneca said in a statement explaining their decision. “We feel it is an affront to all survivors, who are already often overlooked and forgotten in our society.” The band plans to host an alternative concert benefiting victims of sexual assault.

In response to the criticism, Fashion Meets Music Festival co-founder Bret Adams defended the booking to Columbus Alive, noting that Kelly was acquitted of the allegations in 2008, saying, “we’re not the morality police.”

Kelly also headlined the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago last year, a booking DeRogatis lashed out against but which was not met by any bands or sponsors dropping out from the event. Kelly also played the Bonnaroo and Coachella festivals in 2013.

What is the “secret sauce” of Korean business practices and companies that makes them so successful? To find out, readers need more than statistics and company profiles. Learning the basics about Korean culture, about Korean social etiquette and Korean business culture, will enable you to understand for the first time how Koreans think and why they work so effectively to achieve their goals. This understanding will enhance your own effectiveness in doing business with Koreans, or in competing with them–whether in Korea or elsewhere. “The Korean Way in Business” is a must-read for business professionals who wish to know the secrets underlying the commercial practices and business success of modern-day Koreans.

The Business of Electronics: A Concise History

The Business of Electronics: A Concise History

Electronics is an ever-changing field with an entrepreneurial spirit and a rich history, populated by some of the world’s most famous companies and personalities. “The Business of Electronics” details the field’s complex ecosystem in all its trials and tribulations. It looks at companies such as Apple, IBM, Samsung, and Nokia, as well as now-extinct companies such as Honeywell Bull (France) and Sinclair Computers (UK) that contributed to technology and business. Sethi shows us how a handful of US companies led the charge in designing equipment that could make millions of small, reliable components; how Nokia started in the timber business; the history of inventors like J.C. Bose, a pioneer in radio communication (who inadvertently made Guglielmo Marconi famous); and why there are numerous companies and creators that never made it or that we have never heard of. This all-encompassing book not only explores the vibrant history of electronics, it uses case studies to examine the companies and people that made history and explain how we ended up where we are today.
