Obsessed AF: 5 Beauty Products I Can’t Get Enough Of

As a beauty writer, I live and breathe products. There is a constant flow of new skincare, makeup and hair products making their way into my hands on the daily, so it’s a big deal when I declare that I’m “obsessed AF” with something. This series will detail the products that are *everything* to me right now.

5thingsimobsessedwith2

I don’t know about you guys, but this month has been all about skincare for me. I found myself experimenting with close to 15 new products, which kinda made my skin freak out on me. Wah. As a result, I intentionally simplified my routine and focused on thoroughly cleansing my skin (thanks to a new cleanser, + two incred devices), instead of adding in more products. That said, I’m eternally makeup obsessed and always on the hunt for my next favorite lip product, which I might have found this month 😉 These are the five products I’m obsessed AF with.

obsessed1

1. FOREO Luna 2 ($ 199): Say goodbye to your Clarisonic, y’all — this rubbery face brush is everything. The gentle vibrations exfoliate dead skin cells, scrub the gunk from your pores and help get your skin seriously squeaky clean. The best part of this device is that the other side features a slightly rippled surface that’s designed to combat the signs of aging — this is truly a two-in-one product that I can’t live without.

obsessed2

2. Stacked Skincare Collagen Boosting Micro-Roller ($ 30): If you haven’t heard of micro-needling, you (and your skin!) are missing out. The treatment involves poking the top layer of your skin with a device covered with tiny needles, prompting your skin to go into overdrive repairing itself. You’ll wake up looking totally radiant, and your skin will appear plump and dewy. I’ve been micro-rolling for about one month — I do it 3 – 5 times per week — and it’s made such a huge difference in my skin.

obsessed4

3. Tarte Deep Dive Cleansing Gel ($ 25): If you’re looking for a gentle but powerful cleanser that removes everything (including stubborn waterproof makeup products), give this stuff a try. It smells amazing, gets the job done and won’t dry out your skin. I keep this adorable bottle in my shower and use it every morning to get my skin squeaky clean.

obsessed5

4. Embryolisse Smooth Radiant Complexion ($ 50): I put this silky gel on my face every morning before I do my makeup, and on days when I go bare-faced. I looooove it for its smoothing and blurring effects. It makes your skin look super healthy and gives you the perfect natural glow.

obsessed6

5. PERIPERA Peri’s Ink ($ 14): Korean beauty is everywhere these days, and I’ve become totally obsessed with skincare and makeup in this category. I use this lip ink in shade #4, which is a pretty, pinky berry color. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever used — and I’ve used a ton of lip products. You apply it as you would any normal liquid lipstick (it comes with a felt-tipped applicator), but be extra careful — this stuff stains your lips for a full 24 hours. At first, it’ll appear wet, but it will become matte as it sets. Once it’s dry, it. Is. ON. Seriously, it stays on through anything and everything, and doesn’t feel like you have anything on your lips at all. I use a makeup wipe to remove it at the end of the day. Absolutely love this stuff!

Daniel Radcliffe Can’t Stop Laughing During ‘Water War’ With Jimmy Fallon

Hopefully Harry Potter brought his gillyweed.

“Victor Frankenstein” star Daniel Radcliffe took on Jimmy Fallon in a “Water War” on Tuesday, and he just couldn’t keep it together. Radcliffe started laughing almost immediately, and once he got to dump water on Fallon, he pretty much didn’t stop.

Radcliffe played a wizard for most of his childhood, so he’s used to doing pretty amazing things. Once he shocked people by pretending he was the receptionist at Nylon magazine, and during a previous visit on “The Tonight Show,” he expertly rapped the “Alphabet Aerobics.” But that stuff aside, seeing Harry Potter apparently get hit by a giggling charm is just as magical as anything.

“The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET on NBC.

The Annoying Kids’ Songs Parents Can’t Get Out Of Their Heads, Remixed

One unexpected consequence of raising little kids is the never-ending repetition of annoying kids’ songs that get stuck in your head and cause you to sing things like “Zooming through the sky, Little Einsteins” when you’re all alone.

In his latest “New Father Chronicles” video, dad La Guardia Cross put together a video of parents singing those irritatingly addictive songs, which have “brainwashed” them for life.

It’s a delightful medley of lines like “This is the song that never ends,” “Doc McStuffins, Doc McStuffins” and “If you’re happy and you know it!”

Cross’ caption sums up this source of parental anguish: “These songs haunt our dreams. Help us.”

Sadly, we can’t all be as suave and debonair as dudes like Ryan Gosling. (If you’re like us, your flirting skills are better described as, “Michael Cera in pretty much every Michael Cera movie.”)

But hey, it helps to know you’re not alone. In the video above, BuzzFeed highlights some of the most awkward flirting confessions people have made on the secret-sharing app Whisper.

Our favorite: ”Met a really cute girl. She started to flirt with me and asked what my name was. My response? ‘I don’t know.'”

Yeah, that person definitely does not have Gosling-like game.

Michael Eisner Apparently Can’t Find Any Beautiful, Funny Women, But We Just Did

Last week at the Aspen Ideas Festival, former Disney CEO and clueless white man Michael Eisner reminded us that women aren’t usually funny because they’re too busy doing their makeup. Eisner was on stage interviewing actress Goldie Hawn about her experience as a woman in entertainment, The Atlantic reported. When Hawn mentioned that she didn’t grow up thinking she was pretty — but obviously got there, eventually — Eisner offered his own horrible theory behind our supposed dearth of picture-perfect comediennes.

“I know women who have been told they’re beautiful, they win Miss Arkansas, they don’t ever have to get attention other than with their looks,” Eisner stated. “So they don’t tell a joke. In the history of the motion-picture business, the number of beautiful, really beautiful women — a Lucille Ball — that are funny, is impossible to find.”

You know what’s also impossible to find? A smoking hot male comic who isn’t Chris Pratt. But we’re not complaining, because there’s nothing less relevant to comedy than how any one comic — male or female — looks. Mr. Eisner may be the only one who really cares.

If you’re out there, guy, we’d like to introduce you to just 32 of all the hilarious female comedians out there, and let you know we don’t give a sh-t whether they’re “really beautiful” or not.

Amy Schumer

Her Comedy Central show is killing it, and her new feature film “Trainwreck” has already garnered some rave reviews. It premieres July 17.

Mindy Kaling

“The Mindy Project” may be moving off cable, but the author of “Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?” has a new book of personal essays due out Sept. 15

Kristen Wiig

We can’t wait for Paul Feig’s lady-centric “Ghostbusters” to hit theaters on July 22, 2016, but until then, you can catch Wiig on Netflix’s “Wet Hot American Summer,” premiering July 31.

Amy Poehler

There are too many reasons to love Amy, not least of all being her voice work as Joy in Pixar’s new “Inside Out.” (She’ll also appear on the upcoming ”Wet Hot American Summer” reboot on Netflix!)

Melissa McCarthy

We adored her as the lovable chef extraordinaire Sookie St. James in “Gilmore Girls,” and still today as the unlikely (yet badass) heroine in “Spy.”

Tina Fey

If you haven’t yet watched “30 Rock,” it’s on Netflix for your binging pleasure.

Jessica Williams

She’s not taking over “The Daily Show” because she’s perfectly comfortable being one of our favorite-ever correspondents, thank you very much.

Ellie Kemper

“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” (created by Tina Fey) was one of the best things on Netflix in 2015. But of course, you may simply know Kemper as the innocent Erin Hannon on “The Office.”

Tracee Ellis Ross

Ross — starring as Bea on “Black-ish” — had some revealing things to say about women in entertainment in May’s round table discussion with The Hollywood Reporter.

Kate McKinnon

Get ready to see more of McKinnon’s Hillary Clinton spoofs on “Saturday Night Live” as the 2016 election season heats up. Oh, she’s also in that all-female “Ghostbusters” movie.

Gina Rodriguez

The actress stars in “Jane the Virgin,” one of TV’s breakout comedy hits, which centers around a virgin who was artificially impregnated by mistake.

Chelsea Peretti

Oh, you don’t watch “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”? No bother, catch Peretti’s stand-up feature, “One of the Greats,” on Netflix.

Retta

Follow Retta on Twitter if you like both television and lols.

Kristen Schaal

Schaal has some thoughts on Dadbods, but you might know her best as the Senior Women’s Correspondent of “The Daily Show.”

Jenny Slate

The voice of “Marcel the Shell” is also hilarious as the hopelessly self-absorbed Mona-Lisa in “Parks And Recreation.” And every weirdo she played on “The Kroll Show.”

Ilana Glazer

This list would be an utter failure without mentioning “Broad City” …

Abbi Jacobson

Which follows Ilana and Abbi on their pot-laced misadventures through New York City. It’s beautiful.

Elizabeth Banks

Banks has honed her comedy chops with supporting roles in a slew of TV shows and movies from “30 Rock” to “The Hunger Games” to “Pitch Perfect.”

Cecily Strong

She’s been on SNL since 2012, and did a fantastic job hosting the 2015 White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

Miranda Hart

Her self-titled BBC sitcom is amazing, but so is her performance as McCarthy’s equally-unlikely sidekick in “Spy.”

Vanessa Bayer

Another SNL cast member, we’re enjoying seeing Bayer in more silver screen roles — most recently alongside Schumer in “Trainwreck.”

Julia Louis-Dreyfus

“Veep” is one of our favorites, but anyone without an HBO Go password can still catch her on “Seinfeld” reruns. (Now also on Hulu! Huzzah!)

Megan Mullally

Since “Will & Grace,” we’ve particularly enjoyed Mullally as the utterly batsh-t Tammy Two in “Parks and Recreation.”

Anna Kendrick

Equally talented at drama as she is in comedic roles, Kendrick is another lady you want to follow on Twitter

Carrie Brownstein

This “Portlandia” star is the reason we ask to see all our organic free-range chicken’s papers. She’s also got a book coming out.

Aparna Nancherla

We can only say that we hope to see a LOT more of Nancherla’s absurdist humor in the future. For now, we have these video clips on the Internet.

Iliza Shlesinger

The food-loving winner of 2008’s “Last Comic Standing” has a comedy special, “Freezing Hot,” up on Netflix.

Tig Notaro

Known for a legendary 2012 set on her breast cancer diagnosis, Notaro runs a podcast, appears on “This American Life,” played Barb on “Transparent” and premiered a self-titled documentary at Sundance.

Kate Berlant

Berlant’s style has been dubbed “experimental” yet “magnetic” by The New York Times. Hear her make it weird with Pete Holmes on his podcast.

Nicole Byer

Here’s an Upright Citizens Brigade alum you can spot on MTV’s “Girl Code.” She’s also appeared in a Nestle commercial that only runs in Israel.

Michelle Wolf

This Brooklyn girl made her first “Late Night with Seth Meyers” appearance last summer.

Megan Neuringer

Here’s another longtime UCB performer we hope to see a lot more of on the Internet.

Jo Malone juxtaposes smoky incense with a luminous citrus accord to striking effect in this new release. Elegant and deeply sensual, this fragrance has an oriental air to it that won’t go unnoticed. Oliver Peoples Box Set by Byredo

2015-06-05-1433528478-8607714-3Byredo.jpg

Cooler (potentially younger) dads will already know about niche fragrance house Byredo and optical enthusiasts Oliver Peoples. The two brands have collaborated in a “synesthetic” project that demonstrates the influence of color on smell.

The new Oliver Peoples box set includes a pair of limited edition specs along with a bottle of Byredo’s new eau de parfum (also named Oliver Peoples — natch). The specs are available in three different photochromic lens colors including Indigo, Champagne and Green; the bottle will match the lens color you chose. The idea here is that the color you pick out will invariably have an effect on what you smell most in the multi-faceted fragrance. Weird but true. You may pick out anything from the juniper berries and Californian Lemon in the top of the fragrance to the musks, warm sand and patchouli that are deeper in the mix. And if the sensory illusion is completely lost on you, you can always buy the fragrance separately — it smells just as good without tinted specs.

Michael B. Jordan Responds To Trolls Saying A Black Man Can’t Play Johnny Storm

Michael B. Jordan is responding to Internet trolls saying a black man can’t play Johnny Storm in the upcoming “Fantastic Four” film.

After online commenters expressed their displeasure over the fact that the actor is playing a character who was blond and blue-eyed in the comic, the “Friday Night Lights” and “Fruitvale Station” star penned an essay in Entertainment Weekly addressing the topic:

Sometimes you have to be the person who stands up and says, “I’ll be the one to shoulder all this hate. I’ll take the brunt for the next couple of generations.” I put that responsibility on myself. People are always going to see each other in terms of race, but maybe in the future we won’t talk about it as much. Maybe, if I set an example, Hollywood will start considering more people of color in other prominent roles, and maybe we can reach the people who are stuck in the mindset that “it has to be true to the comic book.” Or maybe we have to reach past them.

To the trolls on the Internet, I want to say: Get your head out of the computer. Go outside and walk around. Look at the people walking next to you. Look at your friends’ friends and who they’re interacting with. And just understand this is the world we live in. It’s okay to like it.

After the essay was published, Jordan took to Twitter to thank fans expressing their support:

“Fantastic Four” hits theaters Aug. 7. Head over to Entertainment Weekly to read Jordan’s insightful piece in full.

This Music Festival Knows It Can’t Stop People From Doing Drugs, So It’s Trying To Keep Them Safe Instead

The upcoming Lightning in a Bottle Music Festival, which starts Thursday in Bradley, California, is a drug-free event. But rather than pretend this label and any effort to enforce it will create a drug-repellant force field around the festival, organizers say they’re preparing for the inevitable: They know some drugs will find their way through security and into people’s bodies, so they’re offering a host of resources to help minimize the potential negative effects on users.

As part of this effort, Lightning in a Bottle and its coordinators at the Do Lab are partnering with two groups, DanceSafe — a health organization that focuses on harm reduction and education at music festivals and nightlife venues — and the Zendo Project — a program sponsored by the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies that offers help to anyone going through a difficult experience while on psychedelic drugs.

Part of DanceSafe’s operation involves providing a judgment-free space to proactively address drug dangers before they emerge. The group believes educating people about potential problem signs associated with recreational drug use — often simple things like heat stroke, dehydration and even hyponatremia, a life-threatening condition brought on by drinking too much water — will help users seek treatment earlier rather than later. DanceSafe also offers condoms, earplugs, free water and an open line of communication to anyone who wants to talk about how they can make sure their good time doesn’t become a bad time.

Meanwhile, the Zendo Project offers what Stefanie Jones, nightlife community engagement manager for Drug Policy Alliance, a progressive nonprofit that advocates for drug policy reform, referred to as “mental health services” for people on psychedelic drugs. Anyone who may find themselves confused, upset, uncomfortable or in need of help anywhere else along their psychedelic trip can turn to one of the project’s trained therapists.

DanceSafe has also made a name for itself by offering on-site drug checking, which tells users which substances they actually have and how to use them responsibly. Jones told The Huffington Post that these services will not be available at Lightning in a Bottle due to concerns that organizers could be prosecuted under a federal law that prohibits the “maintaining of a drug-involved premise.”

Music festivals have attracted scrutiny in recent years following a spate of drug overdoses and drug-related deaths. With the growth of cheaper and ever-changing synthetic substances, the music festival drug market — where baggies of different colored powders and pills are often passed between strangers in porta-potties — is only getting harder and more risky to navigate.

Last year, a documentary filmmaker followed a group that offered drug testing services at popular festivals and found that 100 percent of the people who came to them thinking they had MDMA, also called “molly” or “ecstasy,” actually had bath salts, a term that has come to refer to any of a number of popular synthetic drugs. They also found examples of drugs being cut with powerful or dangerous adulterants that would almost certainly change a user’s predicted experience.

While these trends are frightening, they don’t mean fewer people are experimenting with drugs at festivals. This has led to some differing opinions on how to approach the problem.

In New York, the popular electronic music festival Electric Zoo rebooted in 2014, a year after two drug-related deaths made national headlines and forced the event to shut down a day early. Hoping to avoid another death or PR disaster, organizers opted for an enforcement-first approach. Here’s how Billboard described the scene:

In an effort to prevent against casualties, the festival has overcorrected and made widely known its use of high-tech cameras, drug-sniffing dogs and ramped-up security. The substance checkpoints are more thorough, requiring attendees to remove shoes, and cops — both in uniform and undercover — seemed to almost outnumber the fans.

Festival-goers were also required to watch an anti-drug PSA before attending, and organizers dispatched a group of medical students called “Zookeepers” to help with any emerging issues.

In past years, Lightning in a Bottle has also been targeted by intense drug enforcement activity. In 2013, when the event was held in Temecula, California, undercover officers arrested 58 people for drug-related offenses. Many of the suspects claimed they were coerced into selling drugs and accused officers of calling them “hippies” and “brain-dead retards.”

Organizers at Lightning in a Bottle have limited control over how law enforcement chooses to get involved with their event, but they are being more vocal than in years past about their harm-reduction policies.

While DanceSafe has been present at Lightning in a Bottle since 2013 and the Zendo Project joined last year, the festival is making a greater effort this time around to let attendees know that these services are available. They’ve built a “harm reduction” section into the festival’s official code of conduct and, according to DPA, will link to the page in a newsletter they send to attendees. The Zendo Project has also scheduled a basic training on Friday to tell attendees about its services.

After the festival ends, organizers will coordinate with Mutual Aid Response Services, a risk management consulting company, to evaluate the effectiveness of the services and the efforts to promote them, and to determine ways to better integrate these approaches into future events.

Harm reduction is one of many issues being championed by Lightning in a Bottle, which, according to its website, include encouraging people to think hard about whether they should wear a Native American headdress to the festival. To anyone coming from Coachella, the answer is no.

Jones said Lightning in a Bottle is one of the first festivals to get on board with DPA’s push to encourage groups to take more pragmatic approaches to drug use. A guide released by the group lays out the essential considerations and strategies for anyone planning a large-scale event.

And while Jones admitted there is still work to do to break the stigma surrounding drug use — including allowing for on-site drug checking so people can make sure they’re not about to eat rat poison — she praised Lightning in a Bottle for taking such an open and comprehensive stance to harm reduction.

“What they’re doing is a heroic,” Jones said. “They’re making every effort in a tough environment to keep their attendees safe.”

Fitness Loves Fashion: A New Collaboration We Can’t Wait to Shop!

athleta-derek-lam-10-crosby-collaboration

Whether or not there’s actual science to back it up, I know I’m a lot more likely to head to the gym if I’m excited to put on my workout clothes. The athletic market has been buzzing for a while now, and this morning brought news of a designer teaming up with a fitness brand for a three-season-long collaboration that’s gonna be rad. Drumroll, please…

Athleta and Derek Lam 10 Crosby are collaborating on a range that’ll first hit stores in September (collections will include fall 2015, winter 2015, and spring 2016). Pieces will incorporate the best of both brands, including the two-in-one functionality a lot of 10 Crosby’s garments have and the fabrics that make Athleta’s workout togs so fab; expect leggings, sweats, dresses, and custom sneakers that you can wear from gym to brunch, priced from $ 58 to $ 388.

I’d be excited regardless, but I’m especially jazzed right now. I just bought my first pair of Athleta leggings, and I love the fit and the fun fabric (I got stripes and sheer!).

How much attention do you pay to what you wear to the gym?

You Can’t Say That

It started with “moist.”

At first, it wasn’t so much the word itself, but the way it combined with other words to make them seem… inappropriate.

I would be talking with a cashier at Trader Joe’s and she might mention how must she enjoyed the “moistness” of the chocolate cake in my cart. And then all of a sudden, I was a 14-year-old boy in a Bart Simpson T-shirt, snickering behind my hand, uncomfortable and dirty images dancing in my head.

Hee hee, She said “moist.”

It was, needless to say, unseemly.

But really, “moist,” I realized, was just part of the longer series of words I found I was uncomfortable with.

I don’t know if it began when I had children, or when I went back to school or if I was just strange, but I soon realized I had a LIST of words I didn’t want to say. Or hear you say. Ever.

It was starting to become difficult to have conversations about certain subjects in which the offensively inoffensive words might suddenly surface. I soon realized I couldn’t talk about a friend’s new couch if she mentioned that it was “silky” or (barf) “plush,” and I had to surreptitiously swallow back some throw up that crept into my mouth.

I didn’t want to hear that a soup was “savory” or that you had been “pampered” at the salon.

Please. No.

Why?

And God forbid we discuss your health issues. I love you so much and I am the most supportive friend. Ask anyone. But THE WORDS TO DISCUSS YOUR BODY ARE GROSS. Really, really gross. I would be screaming ‘fucking stop it right now FOR THE LOVE OF GOD’ inside and yet nodding in support as you mentioned your husband’s “penile” swelling.

Speaking of swelling, can’t we figure out a synonym for “swollen”? It’s really awful. Let’s just say “larger and more reddish than normal” and call it day, son.

And please, no talk of “tissue” or “phlegm” or “examinations.” I have a weak stomach. And I have an active imagination. If you use those words, I will have images in my head of you that you do not want me to see. And they can not be unseen.

And don’t use words like “putrid” or “stench.” Don’t say “stockings” or (let me brace myself) “panties.” Let’s call them underwear. Or things you wear in areas I don’t want to think about you having. Better yet, let’s not even talk about them.

I’m a liberal girl. I believe in free speech and free love and free donuts. Lots of donuts.
Hell, I swear sometimes. You can express yourself in any way you please, but let’s agree that you should reconsider any word that makes me think of you naked, in the bathroom, or “snacking” on “milky froyo.”

STOP THE INSANITY.

These are, I realize, not reasonable requests.

And that I am possibly unstable.

I’m not asking for sympathy. I am just asking that you stop using words that make me have to throw up in my mouth.

But the things is— the more I discuss my issues with other people, the more I realize we all have words we do not want to hear in conversation.

You are ready to condemn me for my list of irrational irritations, and yet you cringe every time your uncle says he retired from “Ford’s.” Where exactly do you see the “S” there, Uncle Lester? You know who you are. Don’t judge me.

To eliminate the use of the biggest offender, I would suggest you (and you know who you are) consult this handy flow chart I’ve created about whether you can use the word “Moist” in conversation.

And remember one final thing, darling readers, before you begin a conversation in which you bandy these words about, potentially creating a feeling of illness and ill-will in your friends and co-workers:

Just because you CAN does not always mean you SHOULD.

Why You Can’t Help Turning Into Your Teenage Self When You Go Home For The Holidays

There’s a joke that captures the feeling of “regression” that many adults experience when they go home to spend the holidays with their families. It goes like this: For every day you’re home with your family, you lose five years. So you should keep your trip short enough that you’ll be old enough to drive away.

Many adult children know well that returning to the nest can be even more challenging than visiting your parents in another context. You might go home for the holidays and suddenly be surprised to find yourself behaving like a 16-year-old: You fight with your mom over doing chores or going out with your friends instead of participating in family activities. Maybe you’re still criticizing your little brother and his new girlfriend — or you return to that teenage insecurity of feeling like you can never do anything right.

“It’s variable. At different stages of your life you might regress more or less,” Nadine Kaslow, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist at Emory University and editor of the Journal of Family Psychology, told The Huffington Post. “Maybe you go back to your room, which may still be more decorated like a child’s room. You return to the patterns you had when you lived there. It’s challenging, especially early on, to find your way as an adult.”

While regressing doesn’t happen for everyone, it is a fairly common occurrence. And it’s most common among 20-somethings, according to Kaslow. There’s often more flexibility and ease in the relationship once children establish themselves as adults and perhaps start their own families.

But regression can persist until late in life. As psychologist and family counselor Marie Hartwell-Walker, EdD, wrote in a PsychCentral blog, old family roles die hard.

“Never underestimate the seductive draw of what is familiar,” Hartwell-Walker wrote. “It just feels natural to snap back into our well-rehearsed part. The ‘responsible one’ volunteers for more than she really wants to do. The ‘baby’ goes back to playing the cute card in spite of herself. When with her dad, the independent woman can slip once again into the ‘princess’ role she had as a child while her brother starts to swagger a bit like his former teenage jock self.”

Regression is most common when there’s a struggle to transition the parent-child relationship into an adult-adult relationship. Having a successful adult relationship with your parents requires that you feel able to be your own person, and that you’re able to assert yourself without arguments or power struggles, said Kaslow.

For instance, if you bring home a significant other and would like to sleep in the same bed together, but your parents won’t allow that, it’s important to negotiate the situation as adults.

“It might mean you have to get a hotel room … if you want to respect the family values,” said Kaslow. “If you just disrespect what they say, then you’re like a teenager. But if you just do it because they say so and not because it’s right for you, then you’re not really being an adult either.”

Unresolved family conflicts can also make it difficult for family members to break free from old roles and break out of old habits that no longer serve them. “Those families also have a harder time switching to developing those adult relationships,” said Kaslow.

In a healthy adult relationship, information and stories about one’s life are shared equally between parents and children. The parent and adult child can engage in shared activities together, but there is also a level of freedom for alone time.

In an unhealthy relationship, the parents are often critical or unwilling to adjust old traditions to bring in new ideas and traditions. But don’t confuse parental care, affection or doting for an unhealthy inability to change old habits — your parents will always see you as their child, and may enjoy the feeling of taking care of you.

Creating an adult relationship with your parents starts with taking responsibility yourself to make compromises and respect their wishes — even if it means dishing out the cash for that hotel room.

Explosion on Broadway: You Can’t Take It With You

Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play staged like a Feydeau farce! Doors slam on a boisterous set aclutter with tchotchkes and eccentrics as fireworks go off from the basement. Where there’s smoke, there’s… No, no, not revolutionary bombs! Scott Ellis’ revival of You Can’t Take It With You at the Longacre Theater sets the stage on fire!

But chemical petards aside, family values, class, and real life values provide the drama’s substance: Penny Sycamore is the epitome of unconditional love and acceptance. Kristine Nielson, the closest person to a bobble head figure I’ve ever seen, and who wowed everyone in last season’s Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, has reserves of unconditional love for her odd brood included grandpa, a wise James Earl Jones, her husband, the pyrotechnic Mark Linn Baker, dancer daughter Essie (Annaleigh Ashford, hilarious in Kinky Boots and Showtime’s Masters of Sex) who studies classical ballet with Boris Kolenkhov (Reg Rogers). The family generosity extends to a drunken Gay Wellington (Julie Halston). Daughter Alice, the delicate fine-boned Rose Byrne in her Broadway debut, loves the boss’s son (Fran Kranz), but fears that his rather proper upscale parents (Byron Jennings and Johanna Day) may not mesh well with her unruly kin. Class matters in this Depression era romp. But what can you say to a family that comes to a home-cooked dinner in black tie?

The ensemble, including a gorgeous Elizabeth Ashley as a down-on-her-heels Russian countess, adds hilarious gravitas to this production, done old school, with two intermissions. That’s just fine because you need a pause in the non-stop laughing.

Money Can’t Buy You Love

Money isn’t everything. These days, when people start complaining about their daily misfortunes, a friend or therapist might suggest that they sit down and draw up a “gratitude list” in order to better appreciate their assets and blessings which they so often take for granted.

While many people think of gratitude lists as an outgrowth of 12-step programs or the ever-expanding genre of self-help books, precious few are aware of their link to a 1946 hit musical with music and lyrics by Irving Berlin. One of the many songs made famous by Ethel Merman was Annie Oakley’s Act II production number entitled “I Got The Sun in the Mornin’ and the Moon at Night.” Here’s a clip of Merman performing the song during the Music Theatre of Lincoln Center’s 1966 revival of Annie Get Your Gun.

The Merm put her stamp on lots of songs by such Broadway titans as Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Vincent Youmans, Cole Porter, and Jule Styne. Ironically, one of the duets which she introduced in 1939’s Du Barry Was A Lady was given a second life when it was added to the score of a 1954 television version of Cole Porter’s Anything Goes that co-starred Frank Sinatra and Bert Lahr (Merman’s original partner from the stage version of DuBarry Was A Lady).

“Friendship” returned to the musical stage in a 1962 off-Broadway revival of Anything Goes that starred Eileen Rodgers. Since then, it has become an integral part of most productions of that beloved Broadway show.

* * * * * * * * * *

To my knowledge, there was no original cast recording of Cole Porter’s score for Du Barry Was A Lady. That’s a real shame because it glows with the songwriter’s mischievous wit in his lyrics for “It Ain’t Etiquette” and “But In The Morning, No!”

I’d never come across “When Loved Beckoned” and “Katie Went to Haiti,” but “Well, Did You Evah!” was recycled for the 1955 movie musical, High Society. In 1975, the song was used by Peter Bogdanovich in At Long Last Love. In the following clip it is performed by Cybill Shepherd, Madeline Kahn, Burt Reynolds, and Duilio Del Prete.

Another gem from Du Barry Was A Lady was “Give Him The Ooh-La-La.” Although Merman never recorded the number, Carol Burnett performed it in a 1956 segment of Omnibus.

San Francisco’s 42nd Street Moon recently revived Du Barry Was A Lady with Bruce Vilanch starring as Louie Blor (the role created by Bert Lahr on Broadway). The plot revolves around a simple device: Blor is the ladies washroom attendant at a nightclub who has won the lottery. Although he’s in love with singer May Daly, she’s in love with her friend Alice Barton’s brother, Alex.

When Louie’s replacement, Charley (Jordan Sidfield), suggests that Louie can succeed at wooing May by giving Alex a Mickey Finn, Blor gets distracted and forgets which drink is intended for Alex. After passing out, he dreams that he is really France’s King Louis XV and that May is the beautiful Madame Du Barry. Complications quickly ensue.

2014-06-15-dubarry1.jpg

As it turns out, Louis XV’s chances of hooking up with Madame du Barry are equally dismal. But the show allows for some delightful costume work, visual sight gags, and a great deal of mugging on Vilanch’s part.

What becomes most apparent from watching Du Barry Was A Lady onstage is that they no longer write new musicals for actors with the kind of personality and stage appeal that a great comic like Bert Lahr developed while working in vaudeville and burlesque. Nor are there any unique voices around today (like Merman’s) which might inspire a Broadway composer to write a show with one particular singer in mind for the leading role.

2014-06-15-dubarry2.jpg

King Louis XV (Bruce Vilanch) with Madame du Barry (Ashley Rae

It’s difficult to resist the bawdy charms of a script whose minor roles include Fondue, Paingrillé, La Marquise de Gruyere and La Comtesse de Roquefort. While Vilanch delighted the audience whenever he was onstage, 42nd Street Moon’s production of Du Barry Was A Lady benefitted handsomely from Ashley Rae Little’s brassy performance as May Daly as well as Zack Thomas Wilde’s direction and choreography.

As Alex, Jack Mosbacher scored strongly with Porter’s romantic ballad, “Do I Love You?” In supporting roles, Nicole Renée Chapman doubled as Alice Barton and Alisande de Vernay while Jordan Sidfield (whose toothy smile evokes memories of Robert Morse and Tommy Steele) drew comic relief as the streetwise Charley and the goofy Dauphin who has a fetish for taking apart watches. Others in the cast included company regulars Ryan Drummond, Rudy Guerrero, and Nathaniel Rothrock.

While this may not be Porter’s strongest score, it’s great to have a chance to see a Broadway hit that has fallen into oblivion (the 1943 film starring Red Skelton and Lucille Ball with a young Zero Mostel as “Rami the Swami” is a real clunker).

Don’t try to pigeonhole Eastern Boys, a new French film written and directed by Robin Campillo that was recently screened at the 2014 San Francisco International Film Festival. On one hand, it’s the story of an intergenerational relationship between a Frenchman in his 50s and a Ukrainian refugee who speaks no French. On the other hand, it’s hardly an idealized fairy-tale of an orphaned hustler who’s down on his luck but gets a second chance in life from a sugar daddy.

What Campillo does exceeding well is balance an atmosphere of increasing tension, suspense, physical danger, and gay politics in a narrative which will have some people on the edge of their seats and others wondering if the protagonist is the most gullible fool in Paris.

The truth is that Daniel (Olivier Rabourdin) obviously has enough money in the bank to survive having his condominium looted by a band of young thugs. Or perhaps he was just waiting for a reason to change the decor in his home from middle-aged gay chic to IKEA-style austerity.

2014-06-15-eastern1.jpg

Poster art for Eastern Boys

The action begins as an overhead camera follows a group of young man making their way through the crowds in and around the Gare du Nord. These “Eastern boys” are under the leadership of their charismatic Boss (Danil Vorobyev), a Russian thug who takes great pride in his athletic body. Among the man’s charges is a young Ukrainian whose working name is Marek but (as the audience subsequently learns) whose real name is Rouslan.

It doesn’t take long for Marek to capture the attention of Daniel who, after a traditional cruising pattern of hide-and-seek, tries to negotiate a hookup. When Daniel gives the young man his address and sets a time and date to get together, one can almost sense the audience inwardly groaning at the sheer stupidity of his action. It’s like offering an open invitation to the modern equivalent of Fagin’s boys from Oliver Twist.

Daniel’s doorbell rings at the appointed time, but his condo is quickly filled with the Boss’s gang, who methodically loot the place of any item that could possibly have any value. As their shocked victim stands by, numbly calculating his losses, Marek appears, looking a bit sheepish.

2014-06-15-Eastern2.jpg

Mareki (Kirill Emelyanov), his boss (Daniil Vorobyov), and Daniel
(Olivier Rabourdin) in the looting scene from Eastern Boys

Marek returns the next evening, calmly telling Daniel “You want fuck me? Is all right. I don’t mind.” His fee of 50 Euros is once again agreed upon and a quick, loveless fuck follows. Soon Marek is dropping by two or three times a week and the cost of his visits has grown substantially.

There are, of course, risks and challenges. Marek (who is quickly learning French from Daniel) can’t let his Boss know about his extracurricular activities. As the young man begins to trust Daniel (and explains how he knows that his parents are dead), the Frenchman’s concern for the boy’s safety starts to grow into a mentor-like form of supervision. Soon, Daniel is insisting that Marek/Rouslan sleep in a separate room as he methodically embarks on a process to rescue his young friend from a life of crime.

Once the Boss catches Marek attempting to break into his locker at the hotel where the gang stays, Campillo’s film takes a hair-raising turn and quickly becomes a hostage situation whose resolution is aided by the hotel’s black concierge, Chelsea (Edéa Darcque). Rouslan’s rescue, escape, and the plot’s final pivot will leave viewers shocked, scared, and surprisingly satisfied.

Why? At the end of Eastern Boys, true love triumphs over treachery and lust. Here’s the trailer:

Why Chris Pratt And Anna Faris Can’t Get It On To Marvin Gaye

Once upon a time, Chris Pratt tried to make a sexy mix tape for him and wife Anna Faris. Unfortunately, it didn’t really get either of them in the mood.

We learned this on Wednesday when the “Guardians of the Galaxy” star told BuzzFeed Brews with “CBS This Morning” that he tried to make a playlist with songs by Al Green and Marvin Gaye, “but like, three minutes into the song, we were like, ‘OK, this shit is just corny.’”

Pratt also told host Whitney Jefferson that the music didn’t work because it didn’t match his, uh, preferred lovemaking tempo.

“I’m more of a ‘Everybody Dance Now,‘” he said. “I put in some C&C Music Factory, get the job done.”

Yet another reason to love this guy. Watch the video below.

First Nighter: Will Eno’s The Realistic Joneses Can’t Be Kept Up With

On the subway home from The Realistic Joneses, Will Eno’s second play this season and now at the Lyceum after a 2012 Yale Repertory Theatre stay, I noticed that the woman seated across from me was also holding a Realistic Joneses playbill. I asked her opinion of what she’d just seen. She replied, “I liked the acting, but I had no idea what the play was about.”

Let me tell you that if anyone wanted a spot-on one-sentence review of Eno’s newest work, you couldn’t do any better than what she said. But we professional assessors are expected to say more. So I will, although I’d love to let it go at the friendly woman’s comment.

At the start of the work, Jennifer Jones (Toni Collette, not impersonating the famous Oscar-winning movie star of that name) and Bob Jones (Tracy Letts, not impersonating golfer Bobby Jones) are bickering in the backyard of their home in, as the program notes, “a smallish town not far from some mountains.”

After some time and some tense exchanges, new-to-the-area Pony Jones (Marisa Tomei) and John Jones (Michael C. Hall) arrive with a bottle of wine wrapped in shiny silver paper and impose themselves on the first pair of Joneses, an imposition Bob clearly likes less than Jennifer.

What follows in this scene and several subsequent scenes–taking place on a David Zinn set meant to represent both Jones residences and a supermarket, et cetera–are various combinations of the Joneses talking in unrelenting non sequiturs about themselves and their relationships to one another.

When Pony (her father came up with the nickname, she reports) and John are about to leave towards the end of the first meeting, she spots a dead squirrel, which Bob disposes of in a handy trashcan. At some point during the work’s intermission-less 90 minutes the information is revealed that both Bob and John are suffering from a rare malady, the medical term for which goes by so quickly I missed it.

Those events represent what could be called the action in a play that is actually brimming with non-action. At times, it appears that Bob may have some interest in Pony. At other times, it seems John has eyes, or at least hands, for Jennifer and that she may be contemplating reciprocation. But these are just vague hints cropping up during the proliferation of conversations that go nowhere, because as Jennifer, Bob, Pony and John keep jabbering, they’re mostly jabbering at cross-purposes.

Occasionally, the offbeat give-and-take can be amusing. There’s a moment when Bob is nagging at Jennifer, where she says, “Do not even start.” Then, following a brief silence, she adds, “I’m waiting.” John, who’s full of left-field remarks, gets to say, “Ice cream is a dish best served cold.”

Nevertheless, after, for instance, too many of John’s opinions uttered, then recanted, then revised, then recanted again, it’s difficult for a spectator–here I mean me–not to start wracking his brain for what in the name of illuminating entertainment playwright Eno aiming at.

There’s the title, which does conjure the old phrase “keeping up with the Joneses.” And here are two sets of Joneses. Is one pair trying to keep up with the other while vice versa is going on? Better yet, is Eno having his joke on the very idea of keeping up with people who by their very chatter can’t be kept up with and, more pointedly, aren’t worth keeping up with.

Or wait, here’s another possibility. The play starts with a middle-aged couple harping at each other late-ish one night. Suddenly, a younger couple pushes through their bushes to interrupt them. She’s flighty and he’s makes a point of being loosely charming. Does this sound familiar, all you theater lovers? Is Eno serving himself very personal laughs by deconstructing Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? And don’t forget Letts was in that drama’s last revival.

Maybe, just maybe Eno is intrigued by the failure of words. Maybe that’s his target. There’s definitely mention of the problem when communications between and among these verbose, if ultimately inarticulate, Joneses lob their words at each other and miss the mark. If so, the apercu isn’t new. Its much earlier manifestation came to be called “Theater of the Absurd.” Possibly Eno is indulging himself in something like Theater of the Post-Absurd and expecting the rest of us to appreciate it.

Perhaps it’s a bit of all the above. Nonetheless, there’s got to be more to it, or otherwise, he has only enough inspiration–if it can be called that–for a short sketch. Maybe that’s not a worry to him. Only a month and a few days back, his intermission-less 80-minuter The Open House bowed at Playwrights Horizons.

In that one a dysfunctional family to beat all dysfunctional families dysfunctions for much of the allotted time. At that one I was thinking, initially, “Okay, he’s sending up the all-too-common dysfunctional family play. Nice idea.” But I was also thinking it’s a nice idea that’s only worth a 10-minute skit. Wouldn’t you know, however, that Eno found a twist causing me to reconsider my conclusion? I eventually decided The Open House was worth a 20-minute skit.

Still, if I can’t bring enlightenment to a discussion of The Realistic Joneses, Eno can. Here he is talking about his intentions with Playbill’s Mervyn Rothstein, “I had questions about the absolute fact of death looming there that we are very happy to ignore–how does that quietly and constantly make its pressure felt in our dealings with each other, in relationships and love and things like that?”

So that’s what he means to convey through his incomprehensible, although sometimes tickling, colloquies. If so, it’s not working for my subway-car acquaintance, and it’s not working for me, either. His premise is far too obscure.

Under Sam Gold’s direction, the alphabetically billed Collette, Hall, Letts and Tomei are collectively giving it their best shot. Unfortunately their best is not good enough. The Realistic Joneses from the highly regarded (though not necessarily by me) Will Eno is an example of that wise old saying, “There’s less here than meets the eye.”

Naturally, when the meteorologist reports impending winter storms, it's due time to stock up on necessities. We’re not complaining though.
