Rochas Celebrates Its 90th Anniversary

NINETY CANDLES: To help celebrate its 90th anniversary this year, Rochas hosted an exhibition including vintage fashion, fragrance and advertising and a party on Wednesday in its soon-to-be-open new headquarters at 1 Rond-Point du Champs-Élysées in Paris.
“It all goes with the global intention of the brand to really push it forward and to make it much more visible,” said Stéphane Lemonnier, fashion and accessories director at Rochas.
On display were some pieces by Marcel Rochas, the label’s namesake designer, as well as creations by Peter O’Brien, Olivier Theyskens, Marco Zanini and Alessandro Dell’Acqua.
One room specifically devoted to fashion included 28 looks — dresses, pantsuits and even pajamas — shown alongside accessories and perfume. Especially in keeping with the birthday theme were a few pieces bedecked with swallow imagery from Rochas’ fall 2015 show, which marked the label’s 90 years with the print inspired by the house’s 1934 collection.
Lining the walls next door were copies of ads dating back to Rochas’ start. Kicking that off was an image from 1925, a black-and-white drawing depicting the entryway to Rochas’ headquarters framed by two fir trees.
There was also the 1936 campaign for Les Parfums Marcel Rochas framed with a colored rectangle, which originally appeared on

Cath Kidston Film Celebrates Back-to-school

IN THE BAG: Cath Kidston, the British accessories, clothing and homeware brand known for its vintage-inspired prints, has shot a film to tout the upcoming back to school season — and its new collection of school bags.
The short film spotlights British bloggers Katie Ellison of Mummy Daddy Me; Kat Molesworth of Housewife Confidential, and Kathryn Sharman of Kat Got The Cream, who are all shot with their children as if preparing for the first day back at school, while toting Cath Kidston’s fall bag collection, dubbed Bags to School. For the back-to-school season, the label has worked up designs with playful prints of robots, ballerinas and sausage dogs. Prices for the bags start at 24 pounds or $ 37 for a race car drawstring backpack and rise to 30 pounds or $ 46 for a rose print satchel backpack.
Sam Washington directed the film, with production by El Carousel. Sue Chidler, marketing director of Cath Kidston, said the firm had decided to create the collection and film “to capture the first day of school as one of the big emotional periods that parents go through,” she said. “We wanted to connect with our customers in a unique way and be a part of this…journey

Reda Mill Celebrates 150 Years

Reda has been producing luxury fabrics in Biella, Italy, since 1865. Now the company is on a worldwide journey to mark its 150th anniversary. That journey started with an event in Milan in February, followed by one in London and then New York. It will continue to Berlin in November.
“We thought we would go where our customer is,” said Ercole Botto Poala, chief executive officer, at the New York event. “So we went to our most important markets to celebrate.”
To commemorate the milestone, Reda partnered with The Woolmark Co. on a multisensory exhibit showcasing the process that takes merino wool from raw fiber to finished fabric. The exhibit included photographs commissioned from the Magnum Photos Agency that will be used in a book, “150,” to be released later this year as a tribute to the company.

Jessica Simpson Brand Celebrates 10-Year Anniversary

A decade in, Jessica Simpson’s label has evolved into a $ 1 billion lifestyle brand at retail, and the company has aspirations to double — or even triple — volume in the next 10 years.
Part of the route to this lofty goal includes new product lines, such as activewear and another fragrance developed especially for the decade milestone. Yehuda Shmidman, chief executive officer of Sequential Brands Group, which acquired a majority interest in the Jessica Simpson brand in April, pointed to several avenues of growth potential for the label.
“There’s growth outside America,” he said. “We’ve already had interest from several parties [for freestanding stores]. We also see certain pillar categories for the brand, such as activewear. And there are some other channels for growth, such as e-commerce and mobile commerce. We’re looking at all different ways to get the product into the hands of her customers.”
While the business has an extensive wholesale component, the e-commerce and mobile platforms need to be built. As for international options, the company hopes to capitalize on footwear’s distribution base in 55 countries. Sequential is considering markets in which it should enter or expand, and the right operating partners for various regions. Shmidman said interest has

Margot Robbie Celebrates Her Birthday As Harley Quinn On The Set Of ‘Suicide Squad’

The most surprising thing about Margot Robbie’s birthday cake on the set of “Suicide Squad” is that it actually looks edible.

The cast of the movie has been known to give each other peculiar gifts, such as the rat that Jared Leto previously sent to Robbie that was then “adopted” by other celebs, but that wasn’t the case for the actress’s birthday celebration.

Robbie, who just had a birthday July 2, shared a photo of her in Harley Quinn makeup with a caption reading, “Harley’s cake – thank you squad!”

News recently broke that movie director David Ayer has an on-set therapist for the cast since the actors have to work with pretty dark material. So, at least in the case of Robbie, it looks like it’s working. The actress also shared a photo of balloons on her actual b-day, saying that she was “Spoilt rotten today”:

Yep. There’s nothing too disturbing about balloons. Unless, of course, that means there’s a scary clown around, too. In that case, we might all need to use that therapist.

Apollo Theater Celebrates Its Rich Legacy With 10th Annual Spring Gala

Monday night marked the 10th anniversary of the Apollo Theater’s annual Spring Gala, which was met with much fanfare.

The event, which featured a celebratory benefit concert, was hosted by Extra TV correspondent AJ Calloway and featured star-studded performances from Nile Rodgers and his pioneering disco-funk group Chic, Ne-Yo, Luke James, Rosanne Cash, “The Voice” season 8 contestant Kimberly Nichole and South African a capella trio The Soil.

During his opening monologue, Calloway shared some of his personal experiences and memories of the Apollo.

“I used to sneak into the Apollo when I was in high school,” Calloway said. “I was in [New] Jersey, my parents didn’t know I was here, but I used to watch Amateur Night so I’m very happy to be on this stage. And I started my career here. The first time I was on this stage was ‘106 & Park’ and that was 15 years ago. So I’m really, really happy to be here.”

In addition to Calloway’s return to the Apollo stage, the event also served as a homecoming for Rodgers, who landed his second professional gig performing with the theater’s house band. Prior to taking to the stage to perform a medley of Chic’s biggest hits, Rodgers opened up to The Huffington Post about the significance of headlining this year’s annual gala.

“When I played here I was 19-years-old,” Rodgers said. “I had just finished a year with ‘Sesame Street,’ which was my first professional job. And I was just telling the band how it was the first time I walked out onto this stage. It’s amazing for me to be here now, all these years later playing my own music, which is crazy.”

For Apollo Theater President & CEO, Jonelle Procope the Gala has served as an important part in the theater’s growth for the past 10 years.

“Although the Apollo is now in its 81st year, we have only been a nonprofit since 1991 and I would say it has really been over the last 10 years that the institution has experienced tremendous growth as a nonprofit with expanded artistic, educational and community programs,” Procope said to the Huffington Post.

“The Gala, which is one of our largest fundraisers, has provided crucial support toward those initiatives. It also allows us to celebrate and honor the Apollo’s rich legacy as the musical home for so many legendary artists like Nile Rodgers and the opportunity to continue that legacy as an important springboard for the next generation of artists.”

The benefit, which raises funds for the theater’s education and community outreach programs, also honored James Dolan, President and CEO of Cablevision Systems Corporation and Executive Chairman of Madison Square Garden, who accepted the Corporate Award on behalf of The Madison Square Garden Company, and Darren Walker, president of the Ford Foundation, who accepted the Percy C. Sutton Civic Leadership Award on behalf of The Ford Foundation.

Why #UnconventionalBlackBeauty Celebrates People Like Me

2015-06-03-1433373855-526594-lupita.jpg

Originally posted on Philly.com for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Before laying my head to rest last night, Black Twitter blessed me with something magical. Scrolling through my timeline, I noticed the hashtag #unconventionalblackbeauty, featuring photos of beautiful black faces. Not much different from #blackoutday, an online movement that celebrated black beauty, right?

Wrong.

The difference here was this was an honest discourse about how we define beauty within the black community. And I was so here for it.

In less than 24 hours, the hashtag has received a cosign from artist Talib Kweli and timelines exploded with photos of women and men with full lips, broad noses and kinky hair posing with pride. Because truthfully and ironically, a lot of times when we praise black beauty, we celebrate the features closest to Eurocentric ones.

I found myself getting emotional as someone who struggled with finding beauty in her full lips, kinky hair and broad nose. Once I found the young woman behind the hashtag, I had to call her.

2015-06-03-1433372929-2284588-NIA.jpg
Nia Evans

Seventeen-year-old Nia Evans, picture above, who just graduated from Bowie High School in Bowie, Md., last week co-created the hashtag with “How It Feels to Be A Black Girl” creator Jada Mosely.

2015-06-03-1433372878-9896381-jada.jpg
Jada Mosely

#Unconventionalblackbeauty began after a rant Evans had about how black women are represented in the media, and what types of people are celebrated in the black community.

“I wanted this movement to show the girls who don’t get all the Instagram, Tumblr, Facebook or Twitter likes,” said Evans, who told me her “unconventional beauty” attribute was her tightly coiled 4C natural hair.

She says, if you’re aware you already are the standard of beauty, support, but don’t post.

In other words, she says, “If you know you won’t find yourself in a magazine, this is for you.”

I’ve been waiting for this since I angrily barged into my dad’s car at 10-years-old after school one day and told him I was ugly. That my nose and lips were “too big.”

My brilliant father said something I’ll never forget. “Too big compared to who? To who or what are you comparing yourself? You ever thought that maybe their lips and nose were too small?”

And it was then that middle-school-me realized that my entire concept of beauty was on a Eurocentric scale.

In the black community, we often celebrate those who are Afrocentric as long as they don’t look “too African.” The funny thing about the hashtag #unconventionalblackbeauty is that most photos were pretty conventional. But partnering these pictures with the word “beauty” has made them unconventional. For so long, black was made to conform, whether physically, mentally or spiritually. But being unapologetically black or when your facial features go against “the norm” has been, in many ways, “unconventional.”

Africa has produced some of the most diverse beauty the world has ever seen and that is fact. Our shades and phenotypes are not homogeneous. The width of a person’s nose and the deepness of skin tone do not dictate the depth of Africanness.

And yet, when we talk black beauty, we tend to exalt the Imans, Jessica Whites and Beyonces.

Lupita N’Yongo and Alek Wek would be considered unconventional black beauties and are deemed “exotic” because of it.

If you’re skin is deep, beauty is only achieved if your nose is pin straight or minuscule. Or you should have “good hair.”

It’s okay if your nose is wide as long as you have light skin and light eyes.

My sister and I would swing from one beauty icon to another, mixing and matching their features until we convinced ourselves we were visible. We clinged to the image of Rihanna because she was one of the few mainstream artists we knew with a somewhat broad nose who was considered sexy and beautiful and didn’t go under the knife to reconstruct it, even though she has light skin and light eyes. Add Keke Palmer’s skin tone, though she wore her hair straight and ours was kinky. Add Angela Bassett’s cheekbones, though her nose is a bit narrower than ours. Erykah Badu’s hair, though she, too, has light skin and light eyes. And Jill Marie Jones’ full lips, though she has a button nose. Voila! There we were.

Women with deeper skin tones would often lament that people would say, “Oh you have such beautiful skin!” But would never said that they, innately, were beautiful.

When we exalt natural hair, what kind of hair textures do we showcase?

#Unconventionalblackbeauty also acknowledges how we define black beauty when it comes to our bodies. Not every “black queen” has a figure-eight, big booty, full chest and thick thighs. Honestly, most have two/three out of four. And others are beautifully slender.

My black British friends were surprised when they came to the United States to find that black Americans looked like them. They expected to see Beyonces, Keri Hilsons and Jesse Williams roaming the streets of Philadelphia.

My mom often painfully recollects my grandmother instructing her to hold a clothespin on her nose in attempts to narrow it. This pain runs deep and is symptomatic of hundreds years of slavery, colonialism and menticide.

I love my “Serena Williams, Garcelle Beauvais, Gabrielle Union, Tika Sumpter, Viola Davis, Kimberly Elise” beauty.

The round curves of my face are soft, warm and welcoming.

It took me a long time to learn that these features weren’t born out of inferiority, but are a product of a powerful and noble lineage. I still grapple with it sometimes because it’s one thing to know it, understand it, and celebrate it. But it’s another to believe it.

Newport Folk Festival Celebrates 50 Years Since Bob Dylan Went Electric

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — This year’s Newport Folk Festival plans to pay tribute to the moment when Bob Dylan made rock history by going electric 50 years ago.

The festival, noted for introducing performers who later became big stars, will have a secret lineup of musicians billed as ’65 Revisited. Festival producer Jay Sweet said on Tuesday that nearly a dozen contemporary musicians are included in an “all-star lineup,” but the audience won’t know who they are until they take the stage to close the festival with a “massive” set celebrating Dylan’s 1965 performance.

Dylan first appeared at Newport as a guest of Joan Baez in 1963. His three-song electric set two years later — including “Like a Rolling Stone” and “Maggie’s Farm” — is widely viewed as one of the most pivotal moments in rock ‘n’ roll history. It marked Dylan’s break with the folk movement and spurred others to go electric as well.

The Fender Stratocaster guitar Dylan played in the performance sold at auction in 2013 for nearly $ 1 million, the highest price paid for a guitar at auction.

Dylan is not playing at this year’s festival, although Sweet said he’s invited to play every year. If there’s any year Dylan wouldn’t come, it’s Sweet’s guess it would probably be this one.

“Having him back would be the least Newport way to celebrate it,” he said.

Dylan last played Newport in 2002.

“Trying to recreate that moment is a fool’s errand,” Sweet said. “We’re about the future, not about reliving the past.”

But Sweet said without that moment, when Dylan struck out a new path for music, the Newport Folk Festival probably would not be celebrating its 56th anniversary this year.

“Every once in a while, you have to acknowledge, that allowed us to be here,” he said.

The festival runs July 24-26. Tickets are sold out for the last two days, but a few are available for the first day. Other headliners include Roger Waters and The Decemberists.

Bloomingdale’s Celebrates Style Icons in Los Angeles

LA LA LAND: After a brutal winter on the East Coast, Bloomingdale’s executives enjoyed a stylish spring break in Los Angeles. Following last fall’s style icons-themed marketing campaign that featured seven New Yorkers — including Eidos creative director Antonio Ciongoli and restaurateur Michael Chernow, as well as commentary by blogger Michael Williams from A Continuous Lean — the executives celebrated the digital initiative’s L.A. edition on Thursday night with Departures magazine.
“I always appreciated L.A. style, especially casual sportswear,” said Kevin Harter, vice president for men’s fashion direction at Bloomingdale’s. “Guys out here have a good take on individual style. We came in and did some research and found seven guys that were diverse, with different ages and different looks.”
Those diverse men included Toms founder Blake Mycoskie, art curator Franklin Sirmans, stylist Johnny Wujek, actor Manish Dayal, chef Roy Choi, eyewear designer Garrett Leight and TV production head Tom Leach.
After a shopping event at the Bloomingdale’s store in Beverly Center, where Nylon magazine cofounders Marvin and Jaclynn Jarrett dropped by, the party moved to the Palm restaurant in Beverly Hills. Still, the icons didn’t rest on their laurels. Wujek took a break from prepping Katy Perry’s wardrobe for her forthcoming concert

Frick Collection’s Young Fellows Ball Celebrates Don Quixote Exhibit

The invitation read “Don quixotic black tie,” and whether that was a typo or an intentional blending of noun and adjective, the women who arrived at The Frick Collection’s Young Fellows Ball on Thursday were decked out in flamenco ruffles and matador-inspired outfits. The theme, “A Dance at the Spanish Court,” took inspiration from the museum’s special exhibition Coypel’s Don Quixote Tapestries: Illustrating a Spanish Novel in Eighteenth-Century France. Many were dressed by Lanvin, the evening’s sponsor, including chairmen Lydia Fenet Delaney, Elizabeth Kurpis, and Amory McAndrew. “I always love the Frick [gala], seeing what everyone’s wearing. People really dress for the theme, unlike many other parties,” Delaney said. “The setting lends itself to being really dramatically dressed,” McAndrew piped in. Adding to the drama—or the Instagram fodder at least—were customized fans emblazoned with “Lanvin [hearts] the Frick” in gold cursive. Guests playfully hid behind the accessory for photographers circling, and, later in the night, to add a little extra flair to their dance moves.

Nicky Haslam Celebrates New Book

CHEERS FOR NICKY: On a cold night in New York City, Lee Radziwill, regal, resilient, impeccably coiffured, was keeping warm in a corner of La Grenouille. She cut through an intimate space heaving with a distinguished crowd — Carolina and Reinaldo Herrera, Mercedes Bass, Mica Ertegun, Mark Lyall Grant, the British ambassador to the United Nations — to reach her destination, right by the side of Nicky Haslam. The interior designer has just published another coffee-table book — a collection of reminisces, clippings and sketches titled “A Designer’s Life” — and so it was time again for another gathering of his long-devoted fan club, New York chapter.
The leader of this cheering squad is, indisputably, Radziwill.
“He’s terribly witty, terribly well-read,” she said, sounding like she could have gone on for a lot longer. They first met in London and Haslam later stayed at her home in Sicily during the summers, one of several memories he revisits in a book covering 75 years of his life.
Radziwill herself couldn’t remember where or when they first met, though she does recall those Italian summers, but it was clear that the reason for their long friendship is a mutual admiration for each other. “He’s stayed
