Boxing Champion Victor Ortiz Arrested for Rape and Charged with 3 Felonies

Professional boxer Victor Ortiz, who appeared on Dancing with the Stars as well as films The Expendables 3 and Southpaw, has turned himself in to authorities for allegedly raping a woman in March, the Oxnard Police Department confirmed in a news release.

The 31-year-old athlete surrendered himself at the Ventura County Sheriff Department’s East Valley Station on Tuesday after being charged with three counts of felony sexual assault, including rape.

Officials first began investigating Ortiz after his alleged victim contacted authorities on Match 19 claiming she was sexually assaulted “inside a residence in the city of Oxnard,” by the boxer, the Oxnard Police Department said.

The investigation has been ongoing for the last several months before authorities issued an arrest warrant for Ortiz.

The boxer’s bail has been set to $ 100,000 and he is being held on suspicion of forcible rape as well as forcible oral copulation and forcible digital penetration.

Ortiz’s previously had a run in with the law in 2015 when he was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, namely his foot.

Lieutenant Jason Clawson of the Pasadena Police Department previously told PEOPLE that the boxer was arrested at a Kenny Chesney concert at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.

The boxer later pled guilty to battery charge as part of a plea deal. He was put on probation.

Ortiz was also arrested in 2016 for a DUI, according to TMZ. He pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor DUI and was sentenced to 3 years probation and 8 days in county jail.

Ortiz’s latest arrest comes just five days before the boxer is expected to fight in a nationally-televised special against former world title challenger, John Molina Jr.

The fight, which is planned to occur at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California. Ortiz is currently out on bail so it is not clear of the fight will go ahead.

A representative for Ortiz did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Ortiz’s previous titles include the WBC welterweight in 2011 and the ESPN Prospect of the Year in 2008. He was formerly rated as one of the top three welterweights in the world by ESPN, along with several other sporting and boxing websites.

In his tenure — which includes an overall record of 32-6-3 with 25 knockouts — Ortiz has fought against an impressive list of boxers including Floyd Mayweather, Andre Berto, Lamont Peterson, Luis Collazo, and Marcos Maidana.

Truck Driver Kevin Roper Charged In Crash That Injured Tracy Morgan

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) — Actor and comedian Tracy Morgan was critically injured Saturday after a tractor-trailer rammed into his chauffeured limousine bus, setting off a chain-reaction crash that left a fellow comedian dead and two others seriously hurt, authorities said.

A truck driver from Georgia was charged with death by auto in the crash that killed a man described as a mentor to the former “Saturday Night Live” and “30 Rock” cast member as the group traveled home from a standup comedy show in Delaware, officials said. James McNair, 62, of Peekskill, New York, who performed as Jimmy Mack, died after the Mercedes limo bus carrying seven people overturned on the New Jersey Turnpike near Cranbury Township at about 1 a.m., state police Sgt. 1st Class Greg Williams said.

Morgan, 45, and Jeffrey Millea, 36, of Shelton, Connecticut, were flown from the accident scene to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital, where they were in critical condition, hospital spokesman Peter Haigney said.

Morgan remained in the intensive care unit at the hospital Saturday night and spokesman Lewis Kay said that his family was with him and he was “receiving excellent care.”

A fourth passenger, comedian Ardie Fuqua Jr., was also in critical condition, while a fifth passenger, comic Harris Stanton, was treated and released, Haigney said. Two others in the limo were unhurt, including the driver.

Middlesex County prosecutors said 35-year-old Kevin Roper, of Jonesboro, Georgia, also faces four counts of assault by auto. His bail was set at $ 50,000, and he was expected to turn himself in later Saturday. It wasn’t immediately clear if he had an attorney.

Williams said the tractor-trailer driver apparently failed to slow for traffic ahead and swerved at the last minute to avoid a crash. But it smashed into the back of the limo, prompting a chain-reaction crash with a second tractor-trailer, an SUV and two cars.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it was working with state police to look at any issues in the crash related to commercial trucking and limousine safety.

Walmart President Bill Simon said in a statement a Walmart truck was involved and that the company “will take full responsibility” if authorities determine that its truck caused the accident.

“We’re praying for the family and friends of the passenger who lost his life in the terrible accident” the statement said.

Morgan’s limo was owned by Atlantic Transportation Services, which said it had one employee behind the wheel and a second in the front passenger seat.

“Although the investigation is still pending, we concur with the preliminary reports that the accident was caused by another vehicle traveling behind the Atlantic limo bus,” the Rehoboth Beach, Delaware-based company said.

Morgan performed comedy standup Friday night at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino. His scheduled appearance at the Fillmore Charlotte in North Carolina on Saturday was canceled.

Fuqua had tweeted that he was opening for Morgan on Friday. On his Instagram page, Fuqua included a collage of photos from the Delaware show.

“This is what it looks like from the stage to see a standing ovation from 1500 people,” Fuqua wrote at around midnight Friday. “Then we traveled back to NYC in style in a luxury Mercedes Sprinter. Road life is a good life!”

McNair was a close friend and mentor to Morgan, Morgan’s ex-wife, Sabina Morgan, told the New York Daily News. “He was one of the first comedians that took Tracy under his wing,” she said. “They were very close.”

Royale Watkins, a Los Angeles-based comedian who said he had performed in New York clubs with Morgan and McNair, described McNair as having a big personality.

“There may be guys like Tracy who get the fame and notoriety, but you have people like Jimmy Mack who have kind of energized and fueled cats like Tracy and kept them going on the road,” Watkins said.

Morgan, a New York City native, joined “SNL” in 1996 and left to star in “The Tracy Morgan Show” in 2003. That show lasted just one season. In 2006, Morgan found a long-running role on NBC’s hit show “30 Rock,” which was created by “SNL” co-star Tina Fey. He received an Emmy nomination for best supporting actor for “30 Rock” in 2009.

Rashad Charjuan Owens, Suspect In Deadly South By Southwest Crash, Charged With Murder

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The drunken-driving suspect who police say killed two people after he smashed his car through a street barricade at the South By Southwest festival did not use his brakes and even accelerated as he approached crowds, according to an arrest warrant released Friday.

Rashad Charjuan Owens was charged with one count of capital murder, though additional charges can be added later. Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo has said Owens intentionally steered toward pedestrians early Thursday in hopes of escaping an officer who was trying to pull him over. Acevedo has suggested Owens could face two capital murder charges and as many as 23 counts of aggravated assault with a vehicle. The 21-year-old from Killeen, about 70 miles north of Austin, remains in police custody after a district court judge set his bail at $ 3 million. Jail records did not list an attorney for him.

According to the arrest warrant, Owens told police that he “got scared” when he saw police lights behind him around 12:30 a.m. Thursday because outstanding warrants meant he could go to prison for five years. Owens told police he’s facing old kidnapping warrants issued as part of a custody battle over his daughter.

A breath test indicated Owens’ blood-alcohol content was .114, exceeding the legal limit of .08, the arrest warrant released Friday says.

The officer who tried to stop Owens was looking for suspected drunken drivers when he spotted a 2012 gray Honda Civic that didn’t have its headlights turned on, the arrest warrant says. Owens then made a turn from a middle lane and “would have caused a crash” with the police cruiser had the officer not turned to avoid it, according to the warrant.

Investigators say Owens then cut through a gas station and sped the wrong way down a one-way street before crashing through police barriers blocking a street closed for South By Southwest festivities — forcing another police officer manning the roadblock on foot to dive out of the way.

Police say Owens then plowed into a crowd of concertgoers, hitting and killing a man from the Netherlands on a bicycle and an Austin woman on a moped. Investigators say he eventually crashed into a taxi and parked van and tried to run before police subdued him with a stun gun.

The warrant says a video from the police unit giving chase “shows the Honda accelerating into crowds, not simply crowded areas but crowds of people who are hit by the car and flung into the air.” It adds that Owens drove “for almost three city blocks, accelerating into crowds and does not use his brakes, as in the video there are no brake lights visible from the rear of the Honda.”

Court records indicate that Owens pleaded guilty to driving under the influence in Fairbanks, Alaska, in October 2011, when he was 19. He also was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, but that was later dismissed.

Owens also faced 2012 charges in Alaska of criminal mischief, and a warrant was issued for him after he failed to appear in court. In 2010, meanwhile, he was arrested in Texas by Killeen Independent School District police for criminal trespassing and pleaded guilty.
