Cmara! Ciudad de Mxico / Picture Mexico City

In the popular tradition of Picture L.A., Picture Cape Town, and Picture Mumbai, this book contains images by nine youths from Mexico City who photographed what they consider to be their city’s distinctive landmarks. The images, combined with quotes from the photographers in both English and Spanish, evoke ideas that challenge readers’ conventional notions of what landmarks are and invite readers to consider how they are marked by the communities in which they live.

L.A. Accessories Label Cult Gaia Opens Pop-Up Shop at Platform in Culver City

Los Angeles-based accessories label Cult Gaia has timed the opening of its first pop-up shop at Culver City’s Platform retail development to festival season and Coachella. After graduating from FIT in 2011, Jasmin Larian started Cult Gaia with the now ubiquitous flower crown, and has since expanded with wire and fabric headscarves, headbands, lace chokers, bamboo handbags and women’s apparel retailing from $ 17 to $ 180.
“Every piece is a peacock piece, a conversation-starter,” said Larian. “If I can’t get a ‘made you look’ reaction from it, it’s not worth putting in the collection.” Larian has also created lighter and more luxe versions of the flower crown made with glass leaves, leather petals and headbands made from braided rows of beads. “It’s taking a hippie and making her look so rich,” she said while modeling one style featuring a delicate side-tie detail.
Open through June, the pop-up shop will also showcase the limited-edition men’s button-down shirt line Cult Guy, started by Larian’s younger brother, Cameron, as a project created for a reality television show about Silicon Valley start-ups. The men’s shirts, neck scarves, women’s apparel and head scarves all come in matching fabrics, because, the Larians note, “subtle, elevated matching is the next

Slaying of former Saints player resonates in city he loved (Yahoo Sports)

Jacquelyn Brubaker, of New Orleans, places flowers at a makeshift memorial Monday, April 11, 2016, near the spot where former New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith was shot and killed, and his wife was wounded by gunfire, after a traffic accident in New Orleans on Saturday. (AP Photo/Gerald Herbert)

People across Louisiana sought to process the news that one of the Saints’ much-loved players, former defensive end Will Smith, was shot in the back Saturday night in what police called a deadly act of road rage. Smith, 34, arrived in New Orleans in 2004 as a No. 1 draft pick and played with such passion and power that he quickly became a defensive captain. Off the field, he won hearts in his adopted city, which was devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and rejuvenated when the Saints won the Super Bowl in 2009.

Food for City Building

With a foreword by Carolyn Steel of Hungry City, Wayne Roberts’ new book will do for for city-food connections what Raj Patel’s Stuffed and Starved did to link hunger and obesity, what Marion Nestle’s Food Politics did to tie together government agencies and food monopolies and what Michael Pollan did to connect corn and porkbarrel politics. “The most original, thought-provoking contribution to local food policy in more than a decade.” Michael Shuman, The Small-Mart Revolution You don’t have to look hard to find books on food problems and city problems. “Jeux:” New York City Ballet Plays the Game of Love

2015-10-19-1445287598-4203070-SaraMearnsandCompanyinKimBrandstrupsJeux.PhotocreditPaulKolnik.jpg

Sara Mearns and Company in Kim Brandstrup’s Jeux. Photo credit: Paul Kolnik

Black, white and grey. An imposing opaqueness consumes the David H. Koch Theater, like in an old-fashioned film. Every twist of the palm seems shrouded in darkness and contrast, a silhouetted semblance of reality. The lone gold light adds warmth to the scene, a splash of color in the void. Romance masks emotion so that nothing feels so intimidatingly honest. Like when Audrey Hepburn appeared onscreen, the stage is a mirage, a nostalgic, glamorous, gorgeous rendering of what the world will never be: simply lovely.

And yet it is this simplicity that feels too safe in Kim Brandstrup’s premiere for New York City Ballet. Jeux reminds you of Kurt Vonnegut’s iconic line: “Everything was beautiful and nothing hurt.” But sometimes you crave that ache, that immediacy. Sometimes you want to feel something — sweet, cruel, fresh, haunting, anything — just to know that you’re alive. Brandstrup won’t offer that kind of narrative; as a former film student at the University of Copenhagen, he’s more invested in a story’s intrigue than its subtext.

On its own, Jeux sparkles, entrenched in a ’50s imagination reminiscent of Gigi and An American in Paris. But on a program beside the season’s other commissions by Myles Thatcher, Robert Binet, Troy Schumacher and Justin Peck, the action seems drained, almost exhausted. There’s none of the novelty of Thatcher’s gender obfuscation, or Binet’s use of space, or Schumacher’s intricate patterning or Peck’s avant-garde vitality. Brandstrup’s piece is a ballet, amidst other ballets, bland in its generality. You can glue your eyes to it for twenty minutes and claim its pleasure. But it probably won’t make you smile from enthusiasm or whimsy.

The curtain opens to a promising image: Sara Mearns standing in a spotlight, a heap of bodies hiding behind her. Amar Ramasar ties a blindfold around her temples, and the game begins. Unlike Vaslav Nijinsky’s original Jeux from 1913, nobody’s really playing tennis; this is a love sport. Mearns is infatuated with Ramasar, who in turn falls mutually for Sterling Hyltin. Adrian Danchig-Waring likes Mearns, who doesn’t notice his affection because she’s obsessed with Ramasar. If anyone hurts, scorned by a partner, it doesn’t feel so urgent. Claude Debussy’s score swells too often and too richly for pain to matter, and you know you’re in a universe where the plot will sort itself out neatly in the end. If Brandstrup intended for Jeux to have any dab of authenticity, he should have chosen a less majestic, dreamy composer.

2015-10-19-1445287871-4535954-SaraMearnsandAdrianDanchigWaringinKimBrandstrupsJeux.PhotocreditPaulKolnik.jpg

Sara Mearns and Adrian Danchig-Waring in Kim Brandstrup’s Jeux.Photo credit: Paul Kolnik.

The work isn’t insignificant — every moment is articulate and stunning, and a few gel so nicely that you can’t distinguish motion from music. When Mearns cascades backwards into awaiting arms, faint, weak, her body hinged at the hips as she’s rotated 360 degrees. When Hyltin seamlessly wanders into a triple piqué turn, her arms plopped in a sassy “V.” When the corps waltzes across the floor and under the moon, popping into lifts in passé, their reflections dancing like phantoms on a scrim. In fact, these shadows are the most interesting part… man-made projections crafted by the human body, distorted and elongated.

Still, when Mearns removes the blindfold from her face and throws it onto Danchig-Waring — the next victim of blinding lust — the symbolism feels empty. Were you supposed to sympathize with Mearns? Was Jeux anything more than a game? What were you — was I — meant to feel? Mearns tumbles into Danchig-Waring, pressed above, slowly melting to lie over him on the ground. She has snatched him as prey, like Ramasar did to her, like your lover did to you and like you’ve probably done to an innocent someone.

There is Nothing Dead in This Grandiose Former Funeral Establishment of the City of Paris.

Art Galore.

The 104, as it is called, spelled out in French as Le Centquatre-Paris, is a multimedia art center partly funded by the city of Paris. Located in a vast compound of gigantic halls and structures, it houses dance floors, exhibit halls, stores, libraries, workshop classes and stages. Calling itself an artistic and cultural factory, the place is geared towards public service — Art as a public service is definitely a great concept!

On any given day a buzz of artists, dancers, yogis, actors, painters, sculptors, fill the cavernous space with laughter and life. Visitors pop up at the arts library, shoppers stroll through the Emmaus thrifstore. It’s at the same time neighborhoods hang-out for young skaters, and an elite art space for openings and happenings.

Its success is real and tangible. You can witness art in various forms glow right under your eyes, and see how art really is a street expression in its best form. Over 60 percent of the performing artists at the 104 are not French.

2015-09-27-1443380423-538875-104logo.png

The fall schedule of exhibition is heavy with many new shows coming up: dance performances, visual arts, circus acts, theater and music fests. Solo acts or ensemble pieces, no matter what month you are able to go, several art forms will be on display or happening, including a ball in April open to all. About 50 artists in residence are planned to offer their creations for the 2015-2016 season.

An official opening was held Sept. 26 to present the 25,000 square feet of available galleries and open spaces to the public for the new season. On Oct. 3, a Nuit Blanche (White Night) is planned, when the space will stay open all night. The calendar is so full of events that it would be impossible to see and hear everything offered to each senses.

Les Pompes-Funèbres : From Death to Life.

Located on the site of a former municipal undertaker, the name comes from the original entrance’s address, at 104 rue d’Aubervilliers. This was not the mom and pop funeral home where one would visit one deceased family member in a flower-filled room and weep. This was where hundreds of horse-drawn hearses used to park and be maintained. Now an artistic factory, it churns out events and gatherings at a vertiginous speed.

The buildings were erected in 1873 by the diocese, ruled by religious staff; later on, with the separation of state and church, the city created in 1905 the Service municipal des pompes funèbres (Municipal Service of Funeral Process), considered at the times as a liberal progress, as it meant that from then on, regardless of religion or condition, everyone was due a proper funeral.

Before that, divorced women, suicide victims, atheists, all were to be buried at night without any dignified ceremony or family members present. The municipal monopole was taking care of everything, from coffins to hearses, from porters to cemeteries. One of the important rituals after a death was to wrap the front door of the building where the deceased laid with massive black curtains on each side of the front door – those were called the pompes.

This black veil was used until the 1980s. The Municipal Monopole was still in practice until the middle of 1997. Since then, the ceremonial is now left to family and private companies.

At the Pompes Funèbres, 27,000 hearses were in use, with a staff of 1,400, only forty of which were women. Carpenters, wood workers, steel workers, mechanics, auto body specialists, seamstresses, cooks for the on-site workers’ cafeteria. Civil servants, horse caterers and other employees were lodged on the premises. There was even a football team, musicians, and firefighters dedicated to the ensemble of constructions. The funeral parlor did not handle corpses – that was done in private parlors. Except in times of war, when the bodies of soldiers were given back to their families.

Creativity at its Best.

So the place was truly always alive (pun intended) in a way, but for some 15 years when it was closed down, before the re-birth as an art center in 2008. When I last visited at the beginning of September, I saw several artists using the multi-levels center floor as a dance stage and yoga space, kids running around huge sculptures, workers having a sandwich on beach chairs, the feel of community involvement was very tangible.

2015-09-27-1443379310-119530-104weipei.jpg

At each end of the space giant art pieces jetted to the open sky – this is a place that could easily accommodate one of Louise Bourgeois giant spider sculptures. Not every art space can. An enormous funky piece made of hundreds of bicycles wheels and frames in a sculpture by Chinese Al Weiwei named “Stacked” was taking one end of the forum – representing the transportation mode of his native country, while a metal snake of rust-color boxes was being installed for the upcoming vernissage.

2015-09-27-1443379253-9869926-104sculpture.jpg

Concerts for all ages and all style are planned for the fall schedule. Several art shows will also open at the various venues encompassed in the buildings. It’s a real artistic community all housed under one roof. A glass roof that is.

The architecture is reminiscent of the former market halles (market halls) that were once famously popular in the center of the capital. Why waste beautiful edifices? The eco friendly turn-around of the classic buildings is a testament of the creativity of its new users, all artists.

Side Shows.

A food truck selling pizzas is permanently parked inside the Centquatre. The Emmaus store resales clothes and furniture pieces at very low prices, and involves members of the community to work there. Canvas beach chairs invite people to lounge at will. Several corners are meant to be used as sitting areas, or even picnic settings.

The café’s menu is full of childhood favorites, such as toasts, soft eggs, fries and milk-shakes. It is named the Café Caché (the Hidden Café). Another resting place for food is the Grand Central restaurant, the loft-like space offering traditional French dishes at a medium range price – think sausage and lentils, beef cheeks, mussels and fries, rabbit with granny smith apples, steak with Béarnaise sauce, etc..

2015-09-27-1443379498-4706031-grandcentral.jpg

The CentQuatre had a challenge — to fill the enormous spaces spread on several city blocks, and despite its sheer size, the place works — it is both a community haven and a convivial space for all. Despite being located in an untrendy area of Paris, that has not stopped Parisians of every corner to make the trip for the sake of art. Over half a million visitors/spectators came by last year. Bravo!

Meet ‘Beirut’s Banksy,’ The Artist Who’s Transforming The City One Wall At A Time

Artist Yazan Halwani peels political banners and posters off Beirut’s walls to make room for his murals. Born in the Lebanese capital, Halwani, 22, grew up against the backdrop of political logos stenciled on city walls and faded posters of politicians plastered on street corners, some left over from the civil war that lasted from 1975 to 1990.

In Lebanon, “people usually identify with sectarian or political symbols,” Halwani said. Frustrated with the political fragmentation and sectarian strife on and off the walls of Beirut, he decided to draw the public’s attention to cultural figures that “reunite Lebanese, and Arab citizens, without any divisions.” On walls and buildings in East and West Beirut (which were separated during the civil war), he paints large-scale portraits of Arab poets, musicians and actors, encircled by intricate Arabic calligraphy.

Born a couple of years after the war, Halwani is part of a generation of Lebanese youth pushing, in various ways, for greater unity in Lebanon. With his artwork, he strives to offset decades of political polarization that has resulted in cultural divisions and “a weakening of national identity.”

Referred to as “Beirut’s Banksy” by Arab media outlet Al-Arabiya, Halwani has also produced artwork for international street art events, and his work has appeared in Germany, Singapore and Paris. By taking his calligraphy outside the Arab region, Halwani says, he wants to instigate “cross-cultural conversations” and to inspire a “positive view of the Arab world.”

But it’s his work in Beirut that’s garnering the world’s attention.

Political paralysis is nothing new in Lebanon’s government, which is tenuously balanced according to the country’s religious factions. But it has reached new heights: The country’s parliament has failed to pick a president for more than one year, and its inaction and corruption leaves much of the country without regular access to services like electricity and water. This summer, more than 20,000 tons of garbage has accumulated on Beirut’s streets after a major landfill closed and the government failed to agree on an alternative dump or a new contract for its garbage collection company.

Residents began to protest, resulting in the YouStink campaign decrying their officials. Public frustration peaked last month, with the recent wave of protests in the capital being described as “the biggest show of civil disobedience” in a decade.

Halwani marched in a mass YouStink rally in downtown Beirut on Aug. 22.

“I think the current problem and the main motivation behind my artwork stem from the same reason,” says Halwani. “Sectarian political forces that are working in their own self-interest.”

Halwani won’t write political slogans on Beirut’s walls, though. By painting much less polarizing figures, he subversively proposes an alternative cultural and political narrative: one of unity and harmony.

“I think that what needs to be done on a political level cannot be summed up with a wall tag,” he says.

Along the side of a building in the vibrant district of Hamra, Lebanese singer-actress Sabah peers out onto the street, smiling disarmingly, surrounded by a halo of interwoven Arabic letters that look like snowflakes from afar. Across an orange wall in the lively residential district of Gemmayzeh, Halwani painted beloved musical icon Fairouz, in black, white and grey.

“I want to replace corrupt politics with more positive cultural elements that show the real face of the country,” he says.

Halwani’s street art hasn’t always been propelled by such lofty ambitions. At the age of 14, he was drawn to French hip-hop songs and gangster films. “Everyone wanted to grow up to be a soldier or an actor, but I wanted to be a gangster like these taggers in New York,” he says. He started tagging his name on Beirut’s walls, in bright colors and big letters. Later, however, he experienced what he calls a “critical response” toward his own work. “I realized that what I was doing did not have a shred of identity. It had no relationship to Beirut. That’s why people ignored or destroyed it.”

Around the same time, Halwani borrowed a calligraphy book from his uncle. He quickly discovered that there was a discrepancy between the essence of calligraphy and that of tagging; the former was less about the artist and more about the words (often Quranic verses or folkloric proverbs.). “I was no longer interested in writing my name,” he says.

In fact, he was no longer interested in writing anything at all. The Arabic letters he places around his portraits often don’t make up legible words; they’re more like ornate crossword puzzles. “What I try to do is I try to evoke meaning without having to use the actual word … I use calligraphy to create an Arabic visual language which can be understood by Arabic and non-Arabic speakers alike,” he noted.

Often, he seeks to paint murals that start conversations. On one of the walls in Concord Street is a portrait of a gray-haired man, his eyelids on the verge of caving in, his gaze despondent. His creased forehead is crowned with tufts of white and grey hair. The portrait is of Ali Abdullah, a homeless man who for years had set up residence in the nearby Bliss Street. In January 2013, Beirut’s harsh weather reportedly led to his death. The incident mobilized hundreds of Lebanese youth to launch initiatives to help the homeless.

“After two weeks, everybody forgot about him,” says Halwani. “I decided to repaint him, just to tell people that you do not need to help the homeless only when you hear a tragic story on the news.”

As Halwani was standing in a shopping cart, with blotches of black paint on his shorts and T-shirt, a worn out taxi pulled up by the curb. A teary-eyed driver called Halwani over, and said, “When I saw what you’re doing, I was really touched. I used to see this homeless man on the street.”

Three years later, Halwani is still touched by what happened next: Desperate to give something, anything, back to the artist, the driver offered him a ride. “All I have is this car. If you need to go anywhere, I’m ready to take you,” the driver told him.

Biography of a Tenement House in New York City: An Architectural History of 97 Orchard Street

Biography of a Tenement House in New York City: An Architectural History of 97 Orchard Street

I trace my ancestry back to the Mayflower,” writes Andrew S. Dolkart. “Not to the legendary ship that brought the Pilgrims to Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1620, but to the more prosaic tenement on the southeast corner of East Broadway and Clinton Street named the Mayflower, where my father was born in 1914 to Russian-Jewish immigrants.” For Dolkart, his father’s experience of being raised in a tenement became a metaphor for the life that was afforded countless immigrant children growing up in Lower Manhattan during the past century. In this revised edition of his classic book, Dolkart presents for us a precise and informative biography of a typical tenement house in New York City that became, in 1988, the site for the Lower East Side Tenement Museum. The author documents, analyzes, and interprets the architectural and social history of this building at 97 Orchard Street, beginning in the 1860s when it was erected, moving on to the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries when the neighborhood started to change, and concluding in the present day as the building is reincarnated as the museum. This edition includes new research on the basement storefronts (specifically the Schneider saloon and the kosher butcher), the backyard privies and their reconstruction, and the new Irish Moore apartment. “Biography of a Tenement House in New York City “is a lasting tribute to the legacy of immigrants and their children, who were part of the transformation of New York City and the fabric of everyday American urban life. Back-to-School Style: New York City vs. Los Angeles

We had a feeling that teenagers who live on opposite coasts might just rock a slightly different back-to-school style. So we talked to 14 high school students — seven in New York City and seven in Los Angeles — about their overall approach to fashion, where they shop and what they plan to wear when they return to the classroom in the coming weeks. And then we dressed them in an outfit of their choosing from a selection curated by our stylists on both coasts and photographed them on the streets of Williamsburg, N.Y., and West L.A.
A touch of downtown cool — and in some cases, a bit of preppy polish — and always casual. That was the consensus of the teens in the greater New York City area when asked to describe their respective styles at the Williamsburg photo shoot. Ranging in age from 15 to 18, they showed up in their own outfits — the boys in khakis and polos, the girls in a mix of skinny jeans or shorts with T-shirts and dresses — before being styled in b-t-s looks that suited their fashion preferences.
The students attend a mix of public, private and performing arts high schools.

‘Sex And The City’ Author Lists Her Incredible NYC Apartment

The Greenwich Village home of Candace Bushnell, creator of the newspaper columns that inspired the popular “Sex and the City” series, may have found a buyer.

Bushnell listed the property at $ 2.6 million, and the real estate agency has labeled the home as in contract. Bushnell previously listed the pre-war apartment in 2012 for $ 2.8 million; it did not sell at that time.

The one-bedroom, one-and-a-half bath apartment is located at 45 East 9th Street, just a few blocks away from Washington Square Park. The building has a doorman, and the apartment has a wood-burning fireplace and tons of beautiful, natural light. There’s also a great room with a built-in bookcase, spacious dining room and a washer and dryer.

But best of all, the new owner will be able to imagine living in Bushnell’s shoes, writing about love, sex, friendship and more.

New York City Is Bringing Out the Best in Jennifer Lawrence’s Style

Jennifer Lawrence has recently been spending a lot of time in New York City searching for an apartment. We can’t confirm for sure, but if past evidence proves anything—as in the case of Vanessa Hudgens and Taylor Swift—this city does great things for your wardrobe. See how it’s enhanced Lawrence’s style so far.

jennifer-lawrence-street-style
The actress was snapped en route to The Hunger Games exhibit opening sporting an Antonio Berardi scallop-hem white minidress and strappy nude sandals. She accessorized with lustworthy Tom Ford cat-eye sunglasses and a Roger Vivier bag.

jennifer-lawrence-michael-kors
Lawrence was photographed this past weekend absolutely killing it in a Michael Michael Kors Collection black pencil skirt and matching crop top. Finishing the look with strappy heels, she’s the very definition of fierce with a capital F.

jennifer-lawrence-white-dress
She’s toying with paparazzi in this shot, but don’t let the goofy face distract you. Lawrence’s Wilfred Free Rosa dress and black booties make for the perfect dinner-with-friends outfit. More about her awesome Victoria’s Secret model-like waves over on Lipstick.

jennifer-lawrence-cutoffs-heels
Lest you think only her dress-up style has gotten better, here’s the star making her way into a Tribeca hotel. She’s exudes casual-cool confidence in Rag & Bone cutoff shorts and a slouchy gray T-shirt, plus Gianvitto Rossi black sandals. A wide-brim hat and an Elizabeth & James bag completed her stylish off-duty look.

jennifer-lawrence-jeans
On the surface, this looks like a run-of-the-mill jeans and T-shirt outfit, but Lawrence knocks it out of the park with her interesting styling choices. She goes with espadrille flats instead of the standard ballet slipper and a Kenneth Cole black-and-white bucket bag. Other details like the fact that her T-shirt has a cool hemline up the ante on her chill look.

How City Living May Be Harming Your Mental Health, And What You Can Do About It

City life can take a serious toll on your mental health. Research has shown that urban dwellers are more likely to suffer from chronic stress and mental illness, particularly depression.

But according to new research, the antidote to those city blues could be as simple as a walk in the park.

A Stanford University study published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that walking in nature reduces rumination — the type of obsessive negative thinking and self-criticism that plays a central role in depression and anxiety disorders.

“Cities are known for higher levels of mental illness such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia,” study co-author Greg Bratman, a doctoral student at the university’s School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences, told The Huffington Post in an email. “While the underlying causes are doubtless complex and multifaceted, our findings and those of others highlight the benefits of nature experience.”

Take a hike. For the study, the researchers asked 38 mostly healthy men and women to answer questions about their tendency to ruminate, and had them undergo brain scans measuring activity of a particular brain region that tends to light up during this type of thinking. Then, each participant went on a 90-minute walk in either a green space or an urban area.

After walking in nature, participants reported experiencing less rumination, and brain scans revealed less activity in brain regions associated with repetitive negative thinking. Walking through an urban areas, however, had no effect on rumination.

The findings suggest that spending time in nature may improve improve mental well-being by warding off stress and negative thinking.

“Nature experience may help ‘buffer’ against the stressors of urban life, and might thereby contribute to a lowered risk factor for the onset of depression,” Bratman said.

Sadness and the city. If you live in a fast-paced city, you don’t have move to the country or plan a camping trip to improve your well-being — spending time in your city’s parks can still be beneficial. A 2013 British study found that walking through urban green spaces can put the brain into a state of meditation.

By bringing more pockets of nature into cities — whether on rooftops, in empty lots or even along old railroad tracks — urban planners and policymakers can help improve the mental health of their inhabitants.

“City planners are starting to take account of mental health, in addition to all the other values of nature,” Bratman said. “It’s important to incorporate these ‘psychological ecosystem services’ into urban design, to help bring nature to the city, and to improve easy access to these landscapes and nature experience.”

It’s an issue that will only continue to become more pressing. Today, more than 50 percent of the world’s population lives in urban areas, and that number is only growing. By 2050, more than 70 percent of the world’s population is expected to live in cities, and many of those people will have little to no contact with nature, Bratman noted.

“We’re in a unique moment in human history,” he said. “Never before have so many people lived in cities, and never before have people been so disconnected from the natural world.”

Club Kids and Couch Potatoes: How Experiential Is Your City?

The U.S. is a country of wildly diverse interests, tastes and obsessions. Bull riding? Knitting? Nordic dance? All three? That’s America in a nutshell.

Recent university research shows that no matter where you live, live experiences make us more happy than owning things. And this manifests in how Americans spend their money, as live experience purchases have grown dramatically as a share of total spending since the 1980s.

Being in the live experience business, we at Eventbrite were curious to discover what kinds of live experiences most capture the hearts of Americans, city by city. We culled through millions of live experiences, crunched the numbers, and assembled the United States of Events, an interactive graphic that illustrates the types of experiences that dominate the top 25 cities in the U.S.

Which city goes out the most? No shocker, New Yorkers win that game. San Francisco is No. 2, followed by Austin, Los Angeles and Chicago.

On the flip side of this list, Fort Worth tops the chart as the most “couch potato” city, followed by Jacksonville, Detroit, Columbus and Phoenix.

Some of the most interesting findings were in the details. New York isn’t only the center of the social life universe, it’s also the County Seat of Baconland, leading our country’s obsession with the most bacon-related events. NYC also tops the charts for mixology events, but Chicago is our First City of Brewski, placing No. 1 for beer events.

Austin’s official city slogan is “The Live Music Capital of the World.” For the U.S., at least, they actually make good on this Texas-sized boast, beating out the Big Apple for the most live music events, ranking No. 1 across all music categories including EDM, rock, country and even jazz. As a matter of fact, Texas is our country’s mecca for live music, as Houston clocks in at No. 3.

We also learned that San Francisco is a city that loves to run, with higher participation in races than any other city. Surprisingly, LA doesn’t stack up when it comes to California’s reputation as a fitness-crazed state — Angelenos are our least active Californians, trailing SF, San Diego and San Jose in yoga, races and fun runs.

LA does have an eye for art, however, landing as the No. 2 city for art events and fashion shows. But it’s only half as artsy as New York, which attends twice as many fashion shows, theater, comedy shows and art events.

Big Slick: Celebs gather in Kansas City to focus on family, charity this Father’s Day weekend

Back in 2010 I called two friends from my hometown of Overland Park, Kansas with an idea for a charity poker tournament. The friends were Paul Rudd and Jason Sudeikis, and the goal was to have fun with our family and friends while raising $ 50K or so for Children’s Mercy Hospital. It took nine weeks to plan. I named the event Big Slick, and celebrated as year one exceeded expectations both in regard to total money raised and the generosity of all those involved – including friends like Will Ferrell, Adam McKay, George Wendt and Will Forte who flew in for the cause.

This weekend marks the 6th annual Big Slick Celebrity Weekend fundraiser. It’s also Father’s Day. And while the holiday overlap wasn’t intentional, it beautifully highlights everything Big Slick has grown to be about over the past five years. The event has increased in size, awareness, donations and celebrity attendance, but it still remains all about family: those families impacted by childhood illness and seeking care from the incredible doctors and team at Children’s Mercy; as well as my own family – and those of fellow co-hosts Paul Rudd, Jason Sudeikis, David Koechner and Eric Stonestreet – who volunteer countless hours to make Big Slick and the more than $ 2.2MM it’s raised (a record $ 1MM in 2014) possible.

Throughout the months leading up to Big Slick, it really is a familial effort that makes it all happen. My sister Julie and brother-in-law Mark are on the organization board along with Paul’s mother and sister, Jason’s mom, David’s sister, Eric’s sister… not to mention volunteer committees full of countless childhood and college friends. It’s an annual family reunion of sorts that keeps us connected to our roots, introduces new friends to a city that we love, rallies the entire region around charity and continually humbles and inspires us – all while having fun.

The fun of Big Slick weekend includes a variety of fundraising events ranging from celebrity vs. celebrity softball on the field at Royals’ Kaufman Stadium to song and dance numbers and high-ticket auction items. However, the best part of the weekend is always away from the crowds. It’s the hours spent in the halls at Children’s Mercy. Those moments in the hospital are also what brings us, all the volunteers and our celebrity friends – most of whom have no personal connection to Kansas City or the Midwest – back to support Big Slick year after year. Once you meet the children and their parents, hear their stories, meet the nurses and staff… there’s no denying that it’s worth taking the weekend to help these individuals – even if it means being away from your own kids on Father’s Day in order to support these fathers.

There’s an incredible documentary called Inside Pediatrics that was filmed at Children’s Mercy last year, narrated by Paul Rudd and including a glimpse of Big Slick weekend. Whether you’re familiar with the Kansas City area or not, it’s a moving look at the current work being done in child medicine and the challenges faced by our neighbors impacted by illness. It’s what inspires me. This Father’s Day or any day – whether in your hometown or current town – I encourage you to find what inspires you to act. Making a difference could start with something as simple as an idea and phone call. To learn more about Big Slick, visit BigSlickKC.org or Crowdrise.com/BigSlick.

Cause for Alarm: The Volunteer Fire Department in the Nineteenth-Century City

Cause for Alarm: The Volunteer Fire Department in the Nineteenth-Century City

Though central to the social, political, and cultural life of the nineteenth-century city, the urban volunteer fire department has nevertheless been largely ignored by historians. Redressing this neglect, Amy Greenberg reveals the meaning of this central institution by comparing the fire departments of Baltimore, St. Louis, and San Francisco from the late eighteenth to the mid-nineteenth century. Volunteer fire companies protected highly flammable cities from fire and provided many men with friendship, brotherhood, and a way to prove their civic virtue. While other scholars have claimed that fire companies were primarily working class, Greenberg shows that they were actually mixed social groups: merchants and working men, immigrants and native-born-all found a common identity as firemen. Cause for Alarm presents a new vision of urban culture, one defined not by class but by gender. Volunteer firefighting united men in a shared masculine celebration of strength and bravery, skill and appearance. In an otherwise alienating environment, fire companies provided men from all walks of life with status, community, and an outlet for competition, which sometimes even led to elaborate brawls. While this culture was fully respected in the early nineteenth century, changing social norms eventually demonized the firemen’s vision of masculinity. Greenberg assesses the legitimacy of accusations of violence and political corruption against the firemen in each city, and places the municipalization of firefighting in the context of urban social change, new ideals of citizenship, the rapid spread of fire insurance, and new firefighting technologies. See the Magic and Power of Brazilian Martial Art Capoeira at the Ginga Mundo Group Batizado June 18th, 19th and 20th in New York City

On June 18th, 19th and 20th, 2015, the Ginga Mundo school of the Brazilian martial art Capoeira will be hosting a Batizado (or “baptism”) at Essex Street Academy, 350 Grand Street, Manhattan, along with performances and workshops that are open to all schools as well as open to the public. The event is co-hosted by Ginga Mundo Instructor Pena Verde, Professora Pimentinha, and world famous Capoeira Mestre (or Master) Sabiá, coming directly from Bahia, Brazil.

Capoeira — pronounced “capo-wey-da” — is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that combines dance, music, percussion, songs, self-defense techniques and acrobatics. According to legend, Capoeira began over four centuries ago when African slaves in Brazil trained to fight under the guise of dance in order to fool their masters and liberate themselves. Graceful sweeps and cartwheels performed to rhythmic drumming concealed their deadly techniques of attack, defense and trickery…and a totally one-of-a-kind martial art emerged.

Capoeira is played in a circle, called a roda (pronounced “hoda”) to the sound of live music — specifically songs written for the sport, and instruments (the Berimbau, the Atabaque, the Pandeiro and the Agogô) which determine the rhythm, pace and style of game that is played.

2015-05-26-1432670829-8318153-SabPemstreetroda.jpg

Mestre Sabiá playing with Professora Pimentinha at an outdoor roda in Belgium he organized. As you can see from all the onlookers behind the players, Capoeira always draws a crowd. To see more click here.

Capoeira is, in a word, beautiful, and mesmerizing to watch. There is a joyful and playful spirit to Capoeira (in fact, in Portuguese you joga or play Capoeira) and, because it utilizes dance and acrobatics and players don’t just punch, kick and hit each other, there is a mystery and magic to the martial art that make it truly unique.

However, Capoeira is also a dangerous martial art of deception and trickery in which the whimsy of a smiling Capoeirista (as practitioners are called) performing an acrobatic movement (referred to as Floreios — or flourishes — in the sport) can turn on a dime into a powerful kick to the torso or take down at the heels that sends the opponent flying across the roda and landing ingloriously on their back. If a real fight has broken out (which can happen amongst the professional ranks) it will lead to real injury. This is a part of what is referred to in the sport as Mandinga, which is the trickery and deception that is central to a powerful Capoeira game because the most successful attempt to kick or take-down your opponent is the one they don’t see coming.

A Batizado is a traditional Capoeira event where new players are initiated and Capoeiristas advance in rank. At a typical Batizado world-class professional Capoeiristas from all over the city and the world come to help initiate new players, play each other, and to perform for the audience. I would describe Capoeira in that sphere as a combination between Carnival, Cirque du Soleil and a back-alley favela street-fight. It is truly a sight to behold. And a Batizado is the place to witness it.

Of course, nothing as spectacular as Capoeira comes easy. Unlike many other ancient physical arts that have been commercialized and watered down (think of 6 week online Yoga teaching certificates and Karate Black Belts given out at strip malls) Capoeira has stayed true to the historical standards, thresholds and rigor that make it so spectacular. No amount of money can pay for a rank – it must be earned through years of training – and there are very few Capoeira masters in the world, and those few who have achieved it have devoted their entire lives to the art.

But like any great achievement, gaining any real skill and rank in Capoeira is worth it. And the rigor and rewards can be seen at Pena Verde’s classes.

Students learn dozens of basic kicks, ducks and maneuvers which can be assembled in infinite variation, and practice them in a game of constant motion and surprise, as seen above with Pena kicking a Bênção and a student practicing a duck, or Esquiva, all done to the type of game determined by the music. Pena with Cordão de Ouro guest Faisca leading the roda on the Berimbaus. All Capoeiristas must learn how to play the Berimbau, which is the primary instrument of Capoeira. The pace and rhythm of the Berimbau determine what kind of game players play — São Bento Grande (high, fast and combative); Benguela (medium to slow and more towards the ground); or Angola (a game with a heavier emphasis on trickery played close to the floor). (Photo by Ace Murray / Brooklyn Juice Photography.)

If you want to see the magic, excitement, danger and power of Capoeira up close, or if you want to take the workshops and / or join in playing in a Batizado roda, the Ginga Mundo Batizado is the place to do so. See details below:

9 Sex and the City Fashion Things That Would Never Fly in Real Life

While the Glamour staff loves Sex and the City as much as the next girl, we’re constantly chatting about characters’ outfits that made us want to throw the remote (like bra tops and hot pants on a cold fall day). Carrie and crew had some of TV’s best fashion moments, but that still won’t stop the ever-growing list of things that, though fantastic, were totally unrealistic. Nine things we’ve come up with so far:

04-rom-com-halloween-costumes-sex-and-the-city

#1. Small clutches working as everyday bags.
Take a look at the majority of all the ladies’ outfits (there are some priceless Carrie looks here and here) and you’ll notice that, more often than not, everyone’s got tiny clutches tucked under their arms. For most women, the petite size makes an appearance on nights out or at formal events since it’s only really suitable where you don’t need more than a credit card and cell phone. For day-to-day life? Please. Where’s the extra space for snacks, gym clothes, and reading material?

#2. Heels 24/7.
The entire world knows Carrie and the gals love heels, but still…there’s some practicality to consider (especially in New York City). A gorgeous stiletto definitely has its moment, but so do ballet flats, espadrilles, and comfy sneakers. In real life, they would slip on something easier every now and then, especially if the day involved skipping from uptown to down for meetings, shopping trips, and drinks with friends.

#3. A normal salary supporting that shopping habit.
Sure, if Carrie were a high-level investment banker or the CEO of some mega corporation, she could shop like crazy. But as a newspaper columnist? The ability to live alone in a spacious apartment on a tree-lined block, constantly shop for pricey shoes, and wear a designer wardrobe would never happen—even if she had access to all the sample sales in the world.

#4. Miranda’s lawyer clothes.
Viewers got it: Miranda was the serious one with a high-powered job. Still, she spent half the series in boxy suits with bad cuts and, let’s be real: if you had three BFFs who were as into style as her pals, you know someone would have given her some tough love and dragged her to Bloomingdale’s.

#5. Keeping clothes forever.
You know the glorious montage in the movie in which the girls judge as Carrie whips through the history of her closet, trying on all sorts of outfits? It was cute to watch but so not realistic. With the rise of resale and the physical introduction of new purchases, a girl’s forced to weed out stuff every now and then (and not in just one fell swoop).

#6. All the tummy action.
Crop tops are cool now, but back in SATC‘s heyday? Not as much. Between Carrie and Samantha, there was no shortage of midriff-flashing outfits, which, honestly, would have stuck out like a sore thumb.

#7. Absolutely no weather-appropriate shoes whatsoever.
No one ever acknowledged rain much more than opening an umbrella (or holding a newspaper over her head). Where are the wellies or, at the least, simple flats you wouldn’t mind tossing if they were destroyed? For a woman who loved her shoes as much as Carrie, she for sure would have been into taking better care of them. This doubles for snow boots for all four.

#8. Or cold-weather-ready coats.
Throughout all the show’s seasons, a cold winter would have definitely had to strike New York City, meaning the girls should have bundled up a lot more than anyone ever did. Carrie’s beloved fur makes frequent appearances, but paired with bare legs and flimsy dresses (and all the women were guilty of this). Fashion’s awesome, but sometimes a girl needs a long down coat.

#9. The lack of cross-pollination.
In real life, few women fit a style category quite as neatly as Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda did. It’s a storytelling conceit, but let’s be real: If four women spent as much time hanging together as they did, everyone would wind up picking and choosing from one another’s styles, inspired to try and mix it up a little.

Mosque Built Inside A Defunct Church In Venice For Biennale Is Shut Down By City Officials

MILAN (AP) — Authorities in Venice on Friday closed a working mosque in an ex-church that was Iceland’s contribution to the 56th Venice Biennale contemporary art fair on the grounds that it was being improperly used as a place of worship.

Swiss-Icelandic artist Christoph Buechel’s exhibit inside a former Roman Catholic Church creating the first mosque ever in the historic center of Venice sparked controversy from the outset. The chairman of the Icelandic Art Center, which commissioned the project, complained that Venetian authorities “have tried to prevent its realization rather than assist in making it possible,” under the claim “that the Icelandic Pavilion is not art.” “Perhaps most disappointingly, the administration of La Biennale di Venezia … has not supported this artistic endeavor in the way that would have been expected for an organization of its stature and proclaimed advocacy of contemporary art,” Icelandic art center Eirikur Thorlaksson said in a statement.

He said the closure indicated that the Biennale, one of the visual art world’s premier events, “is not a venue for truly free artistic expression.”

Iceland chose the deconsecrated Church of Santa Maria della Misericordia for the exhibit titled “The Mosque” in Venice, which for centuries served as a crossroads between East and West and is infused with Middle Eastern architectural influences. The project envisioned a working mosque for the seven months of the Biennale, which opened May 8 and comprises national pavilions as well as a curated main exhibit.

After weeks of tensions, Venice city officials withdrew authorization for the installation citing violation of the terms, including a ban on using the pavilion as a place of worship as well as security concerns.

The Venice Biennale emphasized in a statement Friday that national pavilions are managed “in a completely autonomous capacity” by the participating countries. It said earlier that it hoped a solution could be worked out.

Maison Kitsuné Opens Second New York City Store

NEW YORK — Maison Kitsuné has landed in the Lower East Side.
The French and Japanese fashion brand has opened its second New York City store on Rivington Street between Bowery and Chrystie Streets.
Although the block isn’t a prime retail destination, the 700-square-foot shop fits right in. It sits next to Green Fingers, a Japanese botanical shop that will fill the new space with plants, and is across the street from the Freemans mini empire, whose lifestyle proposition — it expanded from a restaurant to a barber shop and men’s wear brand — is quite similar to that of Maison Kitsuné, which started as a music label, evolved into an apparel brand, and now has two Café Kitsuné shops in Paris and one in Tokyo.
Masaya Kuroki, who cofounded the brand in 2002 with Gildas Loaëc, Daft Punk’s former manager, is pleased with the location.
“It’s important to feel the neighborhood. There’s already a life and culture here,” said the architect-turned-designer, who was happy to see three stylish men attempt to browse the store before it officially opened last Friday.
Kuroki thought in dichotomies when designing the store. While he wanted the space to be a rougher take than the brand’s first New York

Theater: Radio City Springs New Tradition; The Elizabeth Moss Chronicles

NEW YORK SPRING SPECTACULAR ** 1/2 out of ****
THE HEIDI CHRONICLES * out of ****
THE TALLEST TREE IN THE FOREST * 1/2 out of ****

NEW YORK SPRING SPECTACULAR ** 1/2 out of ****
RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL

Radio City Music Hall’s New York Spring Spectacular has one goal and one goal alone: to create a new tradition in the spring to match their unparalleled success with the Christmas Spectacular. You’ll get lots of Rockettes and lots of NYC vignettes, less Santa and a whole lot more Easter Bunny. After a dramatic last minute cancellation in 2014 and an entirely revamped creative team, they have finally presented this long-gestating project…and they’ve succeeded in spades. This will pack ’em in for years to come.

It’s a spectacle of a very particular sort and — especially if you bring along a kid — it pretty much gets the job done, as hokey as it is. I did bring a kid and she had a blast (“I’ve never seen ceilings so tall!” she exclaimed after entering the lobby of Radio City for the very first time.) As we walked out at the end, she was gobsmacked to hear they do another, different show in the fall. “Really?” she said, wide-eyed. We’ll be coming back, apparently.

It’s a simple story, just like whatever plot they use each year to hang the various set pieces on the Christmas Spectacular. This time, it’s about a billionaire (Tony winner Laura Benanti) who wants to fire the lovable old coot named Bernie (Lenny Wolpe) who does her NYC tours and replace him with a virtual Bernie! Virtual Bernies rarely ask for overtime, of course. Meanwhile, an angel named Jack (Derek Hough of Dancing With The Stars) wants to earn his wings. His task? Convince billionaire Jenny to take Bernie’s tour, discover the magic of the real New York and real people and save Bernie’s job. If you’re wondering what happens…well, actually, no one wonders what happens in a show like this.

The show starts with an orchestra popping up and diving right into the classic “Rhapsody In Blue;” subtlety is not on tap here. Before you know it, we’ve got our set-up, some high kicking from the Rockettes, a Taylor Swift song and we’re off to the races. The show swings through landmarks like the Metropolitan Museum Of Art, the New York Public Library, a fashion show, every sports arena you can think of, the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building and more, all delivered with a dusting of magic thanks to the angel Jack and about a gazillion taped celebrity cameos.

It’s neatly done with a high-powered creative team including Mia Michaels of my preferred dance show So You Think You Can Dance doing the opener, Diane Paulus & Randy Weiner working as a creative team of overseers, a mild book by Joshua Harmon of the wildly acclaimed play Bad Jews, original songs by Gary Barlow & Eliot Kennedy and all of it helmed by choreographer and director Warren Carlyle. What’s remarkable is that despite all these disparate talents and what must have been heavy corporate oversight on a hugely important financial gamble, the show actually has a pulse and a little personality. A few laughs, lots of virtual highlights of the city, a moment of adult romance for the folks and then it’s over.

While they have a similar spirit, the difference between this and the Christmas Spectacular are many. One, that show is essentially an old fashioned revue; all the modern add-ons in recent years like 3-D and video feel like awkward fits meant to keep the show “current.” In contrast, the Spring Spectacular has been conceived from the start with all sorts of multi-media elements and they work together naturally and effectively. Two, it’s called the Christmas Spectacular so despite a generally secular air, the finale does bring out the Living Nativity and suddenly you get a quick blast of “Jesus is born!” This is not the Easter Spectacular, so while the Easter Bunny pops in and out, there’s absolutely no Easter message at the end. Yes, the story revolves around God (voiced by Whoopi Goldberg) giving an angel a task, but Easter it ain’t. Finally, this show has stars.

It must have been a much-debated idea to bring in a Tony-winning talent like Laura Benanti and give her top billing. Believe me, whatever they’re paying her, it’s not enough. The script is a smidge better than average but Benanti elevates the material tremendously. She strikes just the right note: wryly self-aware, but never undercutting the essential sincerity of the story. She makes bad jokes sort of work and makes the few good jokes funnier. She sings beautifully. She even manages to make the “surprise” of dancing with the Rockettes towards the end seem like it’s actually happening for the first time. They should beg her to come back next year. Derek Hough is an amiable presence as well, dancing nicely of course and handling his modest dramatic demands capably. He’s no singer but gets by easily enough, though I think he has one too many solos for a guy who is essentially a hoofer. Their presence pays off and is crucial to turning what could be an anonymous revue into something not bad.

While there’s a nominal storyline, the Spring Spectacular is really a string of set pieces, just like the fall edition. Many work, but some don’t.

The Rockettes — Golden. To my limited experience, they are used a lot more here than in the Christmas Spectacular and effectively so. The lone exception, oddly, is the big finale, a long, drawn-out and poorly choreographed affair that is underwhelming. Until Benanti comes out and they do those kicks, it’s surprisingly dull and should be reworked significantly for next season.

3-D and those glowing wristbands — Kids actually hate 3-D; just look at the dramatically falling numbers for 3-D movie attendance. (Studios make more and more of them and people go to them a lot less, primarily because kids hate the glasses.) Luckily, it’s a brief segment but since 3-D is not what a stage show is all about, this is one multi-media element that is worth dropping. No one would miss it. At least it’s brief. On the other hand, I thought the wristbands they handed out that glowed and changed colors whenever “magic” happened were a lot of bother for nothing. Yet the audience seemed to be continually amused by them. Still, surely they can do something more with them other than one brief, raise-your-hand segment.

Movie clips — A compilation of movie clips celebrating New York City was a savvy breather, proving entertaining and giving the stage a chance to reset for a new number. Hey, Radio City has a history of exhibiting movies so it makes sense. But The Godfather? Really?

Met Museum — The first stop on the tour set the tone. After a few mild jokes you realize a slightly more sophisticated air would prevail rather than just dancing elves (or in this case, bunnies).

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler — They voiced the lions in front of the Public Library. It’s a good example of the show’s use of sophisticated technology in service of a simple effect — talking with the lions. The show is filled with celebrity cameos, most of them harmless but some of them effective, like this. Their jokes were pretty good and it revealed that this Spring Spectacular would focus heavily on using the entire space of Radio City Music Hall. At times, the roof was illuminated to look like the ceiling in Grand Central Station, the walls featured pictures of immigrants who came to America, t-shirts were shot out of cannons into the crowd, ushers tossed around free boxes of popcorn and in this segment the two lions quizzed audience members (including one effective plant) on New York trivia. The sense of a big party, that the show was spilling out into the audience was a smart move.

Don’t buy your umbrellas on the street — A solid “Singin’ In The Rain” segment featured Derek Hough. In the performance I saw, he was suddenly saddled with an umbrella that fell apart. Hough handled the snafu like a pro but it’s a good lesson for tourists: don’t buy umbrellas on the street; they last about five minutes. This was the peak chance for Jared Grimes to shine (he plays Benanti’s numbers guy) and he tapped well. Maybe I’m too sensitive — it does mimic the film, after all — but I’d tweak their interactions with the cop.

The romance — One didn’t really expect a moving storyline from this, so it’s hardly a disappointment. But the entire purpose of the tour we’re taking is to have the Laura Benanti character open up to the fun of a real tour guide and the pleasures of New York City, while falling in love with the angel Jack. Instead, time and again, something magical takes place involving Jack or the grandkids of Bernie the tour guide while Benanti and her right hand man Grimes would be off to the side, oblivious while chatting on their cell phones. Huh? It’s a missed opportunity not to see her won over as each stop reveals something more magical than the one before. The sense of her opening up is utterly lost simply from the staging. She should be a part of the fun right away, first reluctantly and then more and more willingly.

The original songs — Forgettable. They should lean even more on instantly recognizable classics and current tunes like Taylor Swift’s “Welcome To New York,” not originals. Since she’s practically a cheerleader, the Swift tune works particularly well here as backdrop for the Rockettes.

More dogs! — It’s astonishing how thrilled audiences are to see live dogs on stage in a theatrical setting. Any show — play, drama, musical, “happening” — if you bring on a dog, audiences will melt. This show has an almost constant parade of doggies, putting the corgis in The Audience to shame.

The sports cavalcade — One section has Bernie the tour guide trying to accomplish a feat of sportsmanship like scoring a goal in hockey or hitting a home run. Unlike say the museum section, which went to just the Met, here they decide to go to every single sporting event in the city, complete with a banal celebrity cameo. It’s like a parent who tries to overstuff your trip by going to seventeen stops in a day when five stops enjoyed at leisure would be far more memorable. This is a dutiful “checking off” segment and it falls flat. Choose one sporting venue — Yankee Stadium of course — and make it fun. Sure, they wanted to give sports fans (ie. little boys, or so they imagine) their due. But it’s a real bore. Yet it’s not as bad as….

The fashion show — This is the show’s number one clunker, an almost absurdly dull and out of place attempt to give fashion a moment to shine. We see faux fashion shows complete with models and photographers while videos of top fashion designers like Isaac Mizrahi describe what inspires them. They let the educational aspect of the show overwhelm them here. If they must, they can keep the futuristic fashion display complete with Rockettes in LED costumes. But they must drop the rest of the segment as a very bad idea, very poorly done. Because this is so female-oriented, they follow this with the laborious sports segment I mentioned above. (It’s not exactly a thrill to see video of a sports star chanting “Go Bernie!”) This back-to-back misfire is by far the show’s weakest area. It’s also easily fixed; shorten or remove both immediately. Take the kids on a bathroom break right here.

All in all, despite some dull passages, it was a trim and mildly amusing event. Not theater as such, but a decent spectacle. Mind you, there’s an hilarious disconnect between a show extolling the virtues of a live tour guide and seeing the sights of New York…all while giving you a virtual tour of New York. But pointing that out seems pointless in this silly context.

Benanti bears pointing out, though. She’s worth her weight in gold and you should knock off half a star or more when imagining the show without her. Hough was also good, though here’s one more tweak for them: under no circumstance should he be taking the final bow. It makes no sense in terms of star power in New York City and hey, their characters just fell in love! It seems awfully ungallant. She should go last or at most they should bow together. But the show itself can take a bow or at least heave a sigh of relief. After a very stormy process, they’ve got themselves a crowd-pleasing hit.

THE HEIDI CHRONICLES * out of ****
MUSIC BOX THEATRE

Oh dear. I was warily looking forward to seeing this revival of The Heidi Chronicles, though I feared the beloved Wendy Wasserstein’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play had been wildly overpraised in 1988 and would not date well. To be fair, this is a weak production. But I doubt even an ideal one would do more than bring back misty memories of when a female playwright seemed bold just for being present and commanding attention. Luckily, we have a lot more substantial female playwrights around, thanks in part to Wasserstein (though not nearly enough). So we can treat this simply as a play and not the pathbreaker it was.

The story depicts the chronicles of Heidi, though when a secondary character makes that reference it seems odd and out of place. She’s far from the most storied member of her circle and often seems like a bystander in life, at least as seen here. Nonetheless, we meet the esteemed art historian Heidi Holland giving a lecture on important but overlooked female painters throughout history in 1989.

Then we flash back to Heidi meeting the two major men in her life: best pal and future out gay man Peter Patrone (Bryce Pinkham, very appealing) and brash, masculine, confident and smart Scoop Rosenbaum (a fine Jason Biggs). Scoop is untrustworthy in love and Heidi proves the touchstone of his life as Scoop marries and cheats and makes loads of money. What might his life had been if he’d proven worthy of her? She would have married him, Scoop declares. Yes, but I wouldn’t have stayed married to you, Heidi replies in one of the better retorts in this retort-heavy affair.

We dance through decades, charting the progress of women and gays, successful careers, the launch of Scoop’s magazine for Baby Boomers, a pal’s TV producing career, the spectre of AIDS and so on. It’s a quick, superficial trip so you better not blink.

This production has many faults such as an ugly set design that combines sort-of period furniture with slapped-on visuals from each era, as well as atrocious costumes that look like the sort of thing you’d don for a very broad SNL sketch. Indeed, the entire evening feels like a series of strung-together SNL sketches, from the feminist consciousness raising segment to a local TV segment where the otherwise thoughtful Peter is suddenly cutting off Heidi in mid-sentence to score his moment in the sun. (We expect that from Scoop, not Peter.) And again Heidi remains passive, though when she later describes not scoring better on this eight minute segment on a local TV show as one of the major regrets in her life, I can only hope she’s joking.

But the major flaw is the play itself, which begins superficially and gets worse. Take Heidi’s friendship with Peter. He is the best and most enduring relationship she has. And yet, they barely seem on the periphery of each other’s lives. We see them meeting, we see him coming out, we see them re-connecting, we see them at weddings and so on. But they always seem to be catching up. Towards the end, Heidi hasn’t been able to reach him for a while and interrupts Peter to say she’s taken a teaching job far away and leaving the city, a massive change in her life that Peter knows nothing about even though they live in the same city. He breaks down because it’s the late 1980s and friends are the only family a gay man has. Why is he sad and angry? Because all his friends are dying; all he does is go to funeral after funeral and memorial service after memorial service. Doesn’t she understand?

But what the hell? This is news to her? Isn’t she attending at least some of these funerals? Her best friend is gay, works in medicine, indeed shields HIV positive children from bigots, he’s losing friends and lovers left and right and Heidi has to be told what’s going on? That would make sense if they hadn’t spoken in years. But as far as I can tell, they’re best friends.

Her female friends seem even more distant. The consciousness raising segment doesn’t feel like a scene where Heidi makes friends for life. It’s just a series of jokes. When Scoop’s wife and a friend of Heidi’s seem to know each other, I’m confused. How did their paths cross? When all these women seem to know Scoop is cheating yet again, I’m even more confused. They barely seem to know each other; when do they trade gossip?

Heidi’s best female friend (or at least longest, since by and large Heidi seems alone) swoops in from LA and pitches Heidi on coming up with ideas for a sitcom set in the art world. Has she met Heidi? Heidi is the least pop savvy, least sitcom-friendly person around. She is (presumably) immersed in the art of past centuries. What could conceivably make Heidi seem like a good idea for a consultant on a sitcom? And are they really friends? They keep saying so but it’s hard to believe.

Indeed, the entire show feels disconnected. Elizabeth Moss is a marvelous actor on film. I’m not sure her style will transmit to the stage but she certainly doesn’t have her legs yet. Wonderfully subtle and compelling on Mad Men, here she seems to have wandered into most scenes and barely draws your eye. Moss and everyone else seem to be speaking in italics, which is my phrase for when scripted dialogue sounds exactly like scripted dialogue. You almost start to look for the cue cards. Pinkham does this from the start and almost to a fault. At first I thought it was an adolescent tick for his character; but he continues throughout the show. And yet his performance is the most effective one here, somehow. Biggs is fine but all the rest feel like stock characters given stock characterizations. I was just thinking how I hate plays and movies that echo a line of dialogue from early in the work to remind us of the connection that these characters have…and then this show does it. Twice. Both men and Heidi recite so much dialogue from the first time they met some 20 years earlier I wondered why they didn’t just do a flashback.

Heidi is a very passive character and frankly uninteresting character. The only time she really shows any personality is when she’s alone on stage, delivering a speech or lecture. But even here Wasserstein undercuts her heroine. It would be nice to know Heidi is a pro at her career if a bit lost in her private life (a cliche, but still). Instead, even her lectures are undercut by some goofy attempts at humor when surely Heidi should be razor sharp. And her big monologue is a speech about the future of women where she breaks down weeping. That’s the peak for our strong, independent female who is forging her own path in life? When Heidi adopts a baby towards the end, it feels like an accessory, no more meaningful a step for her than the acclaimed scholarly work she published feels like a real career peak.

This is thin stuff un-enlivened by the star power on display. Perhaps a powerhouse actress with stage chops could bring something more to the character of Heidi, make her not seem a bystander in her own play. But that wouldn’t change the fact that The Heidi Chronicles is a dated time capsule — one of those time capsules lodged in cornerstones in small towns all over the country. It contains the usual items — events of the day, “timely” issues, pop songs, hair styles, political and social references and so on. It’s not particularly unique or revealing and when you get right down to it, not very interesting.

THE TALLEST TREE IN THE FOREST ** out of ****
BROOKLYN ACADEMY OF MUSIC

Actor and activist Paul Robeson is a fascinating, even tragic character. Once the most influential and well known black man in America, he fell under the wheel of the McCarthy Era and died a shadow of his former self in the 1970s. We’re still waiting for a great movie or miniseries or stage play that tackles this titanic figure. This one-man show written and performed by Daniel Beaty is a potent reminder of Robeson’s remarkable trajectory. But Beaty simply isn’t up to the demands of creating multiple characters on stage and delineating them one from the other on a dime. It’s cleanly directed by Moisés Kaufman with all the tech elements nicely judged. I’d happily hear Beaty give a lecture on Robeson. Unfortunately, a stage play that feels more like a lecture is not so satisfying.

The Tallest Tree In The Forest begins with Robeson being commanded to appear before the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) in the 1950s. Then it jumps back to his childhood and the tragic loss of his brother out of Robeson’s life, his academic achievements and how he almost stumbled into performance. Actually, even here the play drops the ball: Robeson is an excellent student and then out of nowhere we’re told he gives concerts to raise money to pay his tuition. Really? When did he discover his voice? How did it flourish? Were these concerts the first time he performed in public beyond say the church choir? The arts would prove his calling but we miss how it all began.

The show moves on, with Robeson becoming a lawyer but quitting out of disgust for the virulent prejudice he faced. He’s cast in the London production of Show Boat, becomes a star and yet still finds prejudice wherever he turns. A chance encounter with a coal miners’ march lights an activist fire, illuminating here what Beaty failed to do with Robeson’s musical passion. Soon he is constantly balancing his performances with calls for social justice. Robeson is treated with honor and respect in the Soviet Union, a country where officially all races are treated equally in its governing document. That sparked a passionate appreciation for communism, one that would ultimately doom our hero in the eyes of the public.

His life is so complex and rich, a show about it can’t help but be interesting. Still the play Beaty has written is of the very blunt variety. Robeson’s father might walk up and say, “Son, I’m so proud of you. You’re the third black man to attend this university.” Or Robeson might say to a woman he’s just met, “I’ve heard of you. You’re the first black woman to achieve such a high position at this institution….” I’m paraphrasing but you get the idea; information is ladled out in chunks.

Worse, Beaty is not a master of multiple characters. His attempts at a Welsh coal miner and a Jewish dissident are unfortunate in the extreme, but many people come and go via awkward, unconvincing attempts at characterization.

Even Robeson himself has an accent that wanders here and there. Yes, sometimes Robeson is speaking one way in public and another in private, but by and large it’s a failing on the actor’s part. I was often unsure who was talking; in a one-man show, that’s death. Keeping each character specific and clear so we always know who is speaking is essential. Beaty is successful at creating two vivid characters, both women. Robeson’s wife Essie was always a distinct person and I knew immediately whenever she was speaking. Similarly, a brief monologue from a professor on why Robeson and indeed anyone who speaks up about class and labor is erased from US history also came alive for me.

Those are the exceptions, unfortunately. Along with the play’s didactic nature, it also fails to give Robeson his complicated due. Like many on the left that embraced the Soviet Union, he found it hard if not impossible to accept the brutal reality of that totalitarian state. Fair enough, but here Robeson is almost noble in refusing to listen to the pleas of Jewish friends and denounce their treatment and indeed execution in the USSR. And why? Because he’s worried about enabling a third world war and nuclear annihilation. It’s a little more complicated than that in the show, but not much. Robeson led a remarkable life and it’s easy to see why Beaty or anyone would burn to tell this story. But doing it well is another matter entirely.

New ‘Broad City’ Trailer Makes This The Best Day Of Our Lives

It’s been far too long since the first season of “Broad City” ended (we know, it’s been tough), but Ilana and Abbi are back with lots of panache.

The first full trailer for Season 2 of the Comedy Central series is loaded with twerking, “white power suits” and “titty chips.” What else can we expect from our favorite female comedy duo? Besides the usual wake and bake, Abbi will get to teach a fitness class, Ilana will do some dressing room grooming, and together they’ll attempt to sell (what appears to be) art on the streets of New York City. Oh, and Seth Rogen and Kimiko Glenn, from “Orange Is the New Black,” will appear for cameos.

Watch the trailer, which will make you feel like Ilana at her grandmother’s shiva, and rejoice at the impending return of Ilana and Abbi!

Mabou: September, 2014, New York City

2014-10-11-Kindsight2MabouLoiseauNewYorkCitySept202014imageonlySIZED.jpg

During my career as a “Hollywood Photographer” I have been blessed to meet many amazing people of great accomplishment, who have achieved fame through talent, dedication and spirit. But for me, by far and hands down the one who has given and gives me the greatest hope for the present and future of our world, who exemplifies and embodies the very best of humanity, is young Mabou Loiseau. Mabou, age 8, fluently speaks eight languages (with more in the works) and plays eight musical instruments. When I saw and heard her on Katie Couric, my heart soared, for I have long held the deep belief that knowing multiple languages fosters understanding, tolerance and inclusion in our world and that our educational system should teach at least five languages from the very beginning of schooling. In this regard, Mabou’s parents, who recognized Mabou’s penchant for language during her infancy, are great visionaries for fostering and nurturing Mabou’s language and expression abilities. I myself, in my advancing age, have learned how to say “thank you” in many languages and I have found that even this one word said in one’s language opens connection with others all over. I connect with Mabou’s mother, Esther, and a meeting is arranged. They arrive together at the 92nd Street Y and we go into the art gallery there where my KINDSIGHT'” exhibit is currently on view. My hope is that their seeing this work’s celebration of human spirit will clarify my joy in meeting them. I speak limited phrases I know in other languages and in each case, Mabou replies in that language with her angelic voice and smile. We then go out into the nearby streets and make some photos. We continue our wonderful conversation, Mabou, mom Esther and myself, and I reiterate my gratitude and belief that Mabou will surely help bring people together and make the world better. With smiles we bid farewell and vow to keep in touch and to continue what was started on this beautiful day.

Negotiating the Mediated City: Everyday Encounters with Public Screens

Negotiating the Mediated City: Everyday Encounters with Public Screens

This book is an interdisciplinary empirical investigation of how people interact with public screens in their daily lives. In more and more surprising locations, screens of various kinds appear within the sightlines of passers-by in contemporary cities. Outdoor advertisers target audiences which are increasingly mobile, public art uses screens to interrogate urban change, while postmodern architecture finds electronic imagery a suitable tool of expression. Traditionally, urban sociology research has assumed that people seek to filter urban stimuli, but recent accounts of public screens suggest producers design and position display interfaces site-specifically, so as to engage with those moving past. This study offers insight both into the dynamics of actual encounters and into the long-term process of how people learn to live with repeated invitations to consume media in public spaces. The book includes four cases: street advertising, underground transport advertising, and installation art in London (UK) and media facade architecture in Zadar (Croatia). Krajina shows that maintaining familiarity with everyday surroundings in media cities that change beyond citizens’ control is a temporary achievement–and a recursive struggle.

Take Charge!: The Complete Guide to Senior Living in New York City

Take Charge!: The Complete Guide to Senior Living in New York City

For people over the age of sixty, New York City is a cluttered attic-a mess of valuables that cannot be ignored, but that for the most part remains buried in jargon, agencies, regulations, and eligibility forms. New York City is, after all, a place that offers seniors everything from discount tickets for Broadway shows to social service agencies for those who speak foreign languages including Spanish, Cantonese or Tagalog. It is a place of endless benefits for those who can dig through the junk in the attic, organize what is there and still have the desire to leave the house. Take Charge The Complete Guide to Senior Living in New York City is the first book to gather, in a single volume, information and advice for people over sixty who want to make the most of the city. Here at last is an all-inclusive guide that addresses every concern for senior New Yorkers, from entertainment and healthcare to housing and taxes. Take Charge reaches beyond merely listing phone numbers and programs to giving advice on a number of areas, from choosing an HMO, a reverse mortgage, or an elder law attorney, to receiving travel discounts and negotiating home care. Containing everything a person over sixty needs to know to make the most of life in New York City, Take Charge is the only comprehensive guide available for New York seniors and their families.

City on Clouds

City on Clouds

When Alisha chose to write her thesis on the Children’s Crusade it was just an adventure on paper. She never expected to become part of something similar. Stuck on a blank page, she tries her luck with a clean slate, only to get more than she bargained for. Two stories instead of one. With all the dark magical realism of a medieval tale. Only, one of them isn’t medieval.1212. Born together, Azemar and Alazais share an uncommon bond. One that can only lead to mischief and sin. When their brother Duran joins a crusade against the Cathar heresy, they secretly follow him out of childish curiosity, and barely survive ensuing the massacre. While Duran goes on to fight with the crusaders, Azemar and Alazais are forced to flee from them. Joining a crusade of innocents to free the Promised Land by prayer, they are separated at sea in a storm, only to end up on the slave markets of Africa…2004. Some mortals are born with a guardian angel, but Alisha has reasons to believe hers plays on the other team. She always seems to loose her shoes, and only survives 9/11 because she is mugged on the subway. When she volunteers to teach English in a remote village in Sudan, she’s about to put this to the test as never before. Assigned to a remote, dusty village without water, a violent raid turns her into just one more black refugee. But a genocidal civil war, a 2000 mile barefoot trek across the desert, and a precarious illegal crossing into Europe on a rubber dinghy, pale in comparison to what awaits her there…

Flash Mob Makes Merry on the New York City Subway

Norman Vincent Peale was onto something when he said: “Christmas waves a magic wand over this world and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful.”

Well, here is a video that embodies that very sentiment. A group of sweet people (myself included) made merry magic on the MTA subway system this Christmas.

Goes to show that you can do the craziest stuff in New York, and no will bat an eye. In fact, they will join you.

Start your day (and New Year) off right. Smile next time someone offers you baked ham while on your commute to work.

Aerosol Texting: The Power Of Words On City Walls

Brief Analog Messages On Walls Ape Our Digit-Driven Discourse

Whether satire, slogan, or soliloquy, the anonymous street scribe shapes our experience while we walk through the city.

Boffo or blustery, a piece of poetry can sling or sting your unsuspecting heart as you round the corner or look above your head and a rallying cry will bring color to your cheeks or dread into your head. A well-crafted counterpoint can clearly confound and a cleverly flipped script will turn up your lips, but no-one can crack some cryptic confessionals or meandering non sequitors that pop and squirm under your quizzical gaze.

Whether cute or contentious, the hand-rendered words that we daily see on walls throughout the city are all speaking to us in a cooly comforting lo-fi handwritten way across the bricks and mortar, but somehow they often obey a 140 character limit too. Mercifully brief, as if targeted to our hurried pace and tightly tailored for the twitter-brained among us, these textual communications are looking for a more general audience, but an audience nonetheless.

And here we are. Today we look at a kaleidoscopic collection caught by photographer Jaime Rojo, cobbled together here for you.
