Intercultural Communication Within the Tourism Industry

Intercultural Communication Within the Tourism Industry

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Tourism, grade: 2,0, University of Cooperative Education Ravensburg, language: English, abstract: Tourism is the most superficial way of an intercultural encounter1 and one of the biggest industrialsectors in the world. “The WTTC (World Travel and Tourism Council) estimates thatover 230 million jobs in world are supported by the tourism industry, which equates to 8.3 percent of total global employment, or one in every 12 jobs.”2 Furthermore, the latest statisticsfrom 2008 show that tourism has not reached its peak yet. Over 80 countries earned morethan EUR 642 billion through international tourism in 2008, while in 1990 it had only been EUR 207billion.3 Another statistic representing and pointing up the booming tendency is the one showingthe international tourist arrivals: while there had only been 25 million arrivals in 1950, thenumber constantly rose to 922 million in 2008 and by 2020 1.6 billion international touristarrivals are expected.4 With so many tourists spending time abroad every year it is a logicalconsequence that different culture groups meet. From time to time, people may spend twoweeks in Turkey, Dubai, Cancun or on Bali. This unfortunately might happen without thepeople even getting the local culture rudimentarily. But if they try to get to know the local culture, difficulties may occur. It is not only the language which is different and causes troublesand misunderstandings in communication; attitudes and the way people think vary greatly. Tourists often do not prepare themselves properly for their stays abroad; just reading a travelguide may not be sufficient at all. When going abroad people need to be aware of differentbehavioural rules and patterns. But not only tourists have to face this problem. In the tourismindustry many people work abroad which not only leads to multicultural teams but also tomisunderstandings going back to cultural differences. These groups, both tourists and employees, nee.

Handbook of Information and Communication Security

Handbook of Information and Communication Security

At its core, information security deals with the secure and accurate transfer of information. While information security has long been important, it was, perhaps, brought more clearly into mainstream focus with the so-called? Y2K? issue. Te Y2K scare was the fear that c- puter networks and the systems that are controlled or operated by sofware would fail with the turn of the millennium, since their clocks could lose synchronization by not recognizing a number (instruction) with three zeros. A positive outcome of this scare was the creation of several Computer Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) around the world that now work – operatively to exchange expertise and information, and to coordinate in case major problems should arise in the modern IT environment. Te terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 raised security concerns to a new level. Te – ternational community responded on at least two fronts; one front being the transfer of reliable information via secure networks and the other being the collection of information about – tential terrorists. As a sign of this new emphasis on security, since 2001, all major academic publishers have started technical journals focused on security, and every major communi- tions conference (for example, Globecom and ICC) has organized workshops and sessions on security issues. In addition, the IEEE has created a technical committee on Communication and Information Security. Te? rst editor was intimately involved with security for the Athens Olympic Games of 2004.

Wireless Communication Electronics by Example

Wireless Communication Electronics by Example

This book is intended for senior undergraduate and graduate students as well as practicing engineers who are involved in design and analysis of radio frequency (RF) circuits. Fully-solved, tutorial-like examples are used to put into practice all major topics required to understand the principles underlying the main sub-circuits required to design an RF transceiver and the whole communication system. Starting with review of principles in electromagnetic (EM) transmission and signal propagation, through detailed practical analysis of RF amplifier, mixer, modulator, demodulator, and oscillator circuit topologies, all the way to the system communication theory behind the RF transceiver operation, this book systematically covers all relevant aspects in a way that is suitable for a single semester university level course. Readers will benefit from the author’s sharp focus on radio receiver design, demonstrated through hundreds of fully-solved, realistic examples, as opposed to texts that cover many aspects of electronics and electromagnetic without making the required connection to wireless communication circuit design.

Globalization, Communication and the Workplace: Talking Across the World

Globalization, Communication and the Workplace: Talking Across the World

The global developments in Information Technology Enabled Services have transformed customer service encounters which were until recently face-to-face. The major business areas of healthcare, insurance, banking and media are increasingly moving their customer processes to call centres, web based interaction, and email. ITES is set for explosive growth over the next decade, alongside being increasingly outsourced to non-English speaking destinations. The need for good English language communication skills is becoming ever more acute. This book looks closely at interactive communication in customer-facing services, featuring the voices of both academics and those in industry. It aims to integrate the work of applied linguists, teachers, trainers and businesses. After an initial discussion on the value of research to applied training, the major issues of ITES communications are addressed with either an academic analysis being followed by a training example derived from it, or with an analysis of a workplace problem followed by a research-based solution proposal. This volume should appeal to a wide readership in academic, business training and HR departments.

Travelling Languages: Culture, Communication and Translation in a Mobile World

Travelling Languages: Culture, Communication and Translation in a Mobile World

Based on the commonly held assumption that we now live in a world that is on the move, with growing opportunities for both real and virtual travel and the blurring of boundaries between previously defined places, societies and cultures, the theme of this book is firmly grounded in the interdisciplinary field of Mobilities . Mobilities deals with the movement of people, objects, capital, information, ideas and cultures on varying scales, and across a variety of borders, from the local to the national to the global. It includes all forms of travel from forced migration for economic or political reasons, to leisure travel and tourism, to virtual travel via the myriad of electronic channels now available to much of the world s population. Underpinning the choice of theme is a desire to consider the important role of languages and intercultural communication in travel and border crossings; an area which has tended to remain in the background of Mobilities research. The chapters included in this volume represent unique interdisciplinary understandings of the dual concepts of mobile language and border crossings, from crossings in virtual life and real life, to crossings in literature and translation, and finally to crossings in the semioscape of tourist guides and tourism signs. This book was originally published as a special issue of “Language and Intercultural Communication.”
