Bella Hadid on Her Early Modeling Days: “If I Didn’t Book a Job, I Would Cry”

There was a time when the world just knew Bella Hadid as little sister to Gigi, but, my, how things have changed. The raven-haired beauty has joined her sister on the Tom Ford runway and in a steamy Balmain campaign, while also notching her own accomplishments (like a CR Fashion Book spread and Botkier campaign). And while the girls have their own fashion vibes going on, there are plenty of similarities, including a propensity for putting lots of pressure on themselves.

“I’ve always been really hard on myself. If I didn’t book a job, I would cry,” Bella told Editorialist, also admitting to being “so nervous in the beginning.” And sister Gigi also dealt with the same pressure: before she was linked to Victoria’s Secret Pink, she had spent time being bummed out over not booking the lingerie giant’s famous runway show.

Bella in Prabal Gurung at this year’s Tony Awards

According to Bella, her off-duty style has led some people to think of her as a black sheep who rebels and does drugs but, in reality, it’s the furthest from the truth. “I promise I’m a good girl. I never do drugs. I literally order sushi, watch Law & Order, and go to sleep at 9 o’clock every night. I’m a grandmother.”

Plus, that rebellious style? It’s actually a product of moving to New York City and her mother, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Yolanda Foster.

“In L.A. I did a lot of vintage flea market dresses and Doc Martens. My mom was like, ‘You’re going to need to tone it down with those floral dresses when you go to New York.'”

bella-hadid-new-york-style

Bella’s standard New York style, on display from earlier this summer, involves a lot of black and ’90s staples (think crop tops, high-waisted jeans, and tiny round sunglasses). Still, the model hasn’t totally abandoned her original style. When she touches down on the West Coast, it’s back to breezy dresses and clunky boots, as evidenced by the outfit she chose for a Beverly Hills stroll with her dad last week.

Stage Door: Three Days to See

2015-08-01-1438438921-9030130-ThreeDaystoSeecCarolRosegge1438313901364981x1024.jpgThe Miracle Worker, a young blind and deaf girl, awakened by her remarkable teacher Annie Sullivan. But Three Days To See, a new theater piece presented by Transport Group off-Broadway at Theater 79, introduces us to the adult Keller.

And she is extraordinary.

Seven actors speak her words — and Keller opines on everything from politics to literature. She wrote 14 books and met every president from Coolidge to Kennedy. A Radcliffe graduate, she fought tirelessly for equal treatment for the disabled and counted Mark Twain and Charlie Chaplin as friends.

Her story is hugely dramatic, yet Three Days is sometimes devoid of drama. That may be because director Jack Cummings III has chosen a presentational style — actors speaking to an audience — in fragmented moments.

The play is a mosaic, rather than a narrative, skipping back and forth in time. Born a healthy child in Alabama in 1880, a high fever at 18 months robbed Keller of her sight and hearing. Left in isolation, she was nearly feral until Sullivan rescued her from darkness.

The most recognizable moment in Three Days is Sullivan (Barbara Walsh) trying to feed Keller as a child. It’s a scene anyone familiar with “The Miracle Worker will recognize. This incarnation is choreographed to the Benny Goodman classic “Sing, Sing, Sing.” The music is wonderful, but its usage here is distracting.

Similarly, other scenes feature actors Ito Aghayere, Patrick Boll, Marc De La Cruz Theresa McCarthy, Chinaza Uche, Barbara Walsh and Zoe Wilson jumping on chairs, running around the stage or grabbing flowerpots. The text is powerful — it doesn’t always need physical distraction.

At the same time, Keller’s life is fascinating, and we’re moved and enlightened by her story. There are genuinely poignant moments here; one of the most memorable is when her beloved teacher Annie Sullivan dies.

The title Three Days is taken from a piece Keller wrote explaining what she would do if given three days of sight and sound.

While the musical choices either overwhelm or complement the action, featuring overtures from To Kill a Mockingbird to Gone With the Wind, there is power in Keller’s words. Three Days is a reminder of Keller’s amazing life. For those who did not know Keller’s full story, it’s an awakening.

Brooke Adams & Tony Shalhoub in Happy Days, at the Flea Theater

2015-07-06-1436147591-2268492-HappyDays1_JoanMarcus.jpg

I always like going to the Flea Theater, since they bring to fruition off beat, experimental and genius pieces such as Samuel Beckett’s Happy Days, directed by Andrei Belgrader and playing now to packed audiences with Brooke Adams and Tony Shalhoub. An oddly timeless work written in 1960; to the naked eye it seems like it is an aged piece of cheese, but only if you have never read a book or are part of the generation that needs everything spelled out and explained in 60 seconds, as patience is short these days and Becket requires mature thinking, tempered with intellectual curiosity. It requires a willingness to see that whether the rituals in life move fast or slow, we all most likely, find ourselves in a routine for better or worse. And though the main character Winnie, is a throwback to Jean Stapleton (Edith Bunker) days of yore, is she really that far away in her symbolic matrix from contemporary life?

Even if society has changed drastically in 55 years, we are human and do get older and we do begin to bury ourselves in sand, piling up the emblematic experience of a lifetime around us, until we are gone and buried. The metaphor is still as fresh as ever, though the conditions have changed and even then, if one searches their mind they will have an “Aha” moment of truth, recognizing familiar faces in their lives, even if it’s at the next table while dining at the Starbucks.

Winnie is a woman somewhere in her 50s, trying very hard to stay sane, alive and happy, as she is buried in earth so packed, she cannot or will not move, while her husband Willie moves in and out of day-light from his hole somewhere below the mound, where she presides. She will often call out to him, asking for his love and to affirm her life. He is wordless and with his head turned mostly away from the audience and Winnie, he spends most of his time reading an old paper, looking at porn, and grunting out a few things here and there of little consequence.

Ms. Adams makes a compelling Winnie, with a look of an aged beauty who might have been in a pageant in her youth. She refuses to be unhappy, even though you know by the strain of her smile that she is staving off the inevitability of death and is quite lonely to the very bottom of her soul.

The monumental task of carrying a full two hours of monologue is herculean, but Ms. Adams did it in a smooth and meticulous way; capturing Winnie’s dilemma of impending death, loneliness, and the steady nothingness that her relationship with her husband, who seems to be disappearing at will and with him her romantic memories. Ms. Adams has a distinctive quality of being uncommonness, which sometimes gets in the way of Winnie’s ordinary life history. We cannot help but notice her sparkle, she is not a warn piece of jewelry that has been dulled by time or become eccentric from a ritualized life forced into a mound of earth, maybe Ms. Adams is too charming. That hint of frustration, of utter eccentricity brought about by monotony fails to shine through, which seems to me missing from the steadiness of her performance.

Scarcely existent Willie, Mr. Shalhoub used his brief words wisely and was no less charming than he is in everything he does. However, I have to say, to be Willie successfully, one must be slightly more than catatonic and slightly less than dead. His final moment with his wife requires something deeper than the surprise vertical entrance of Willie wearing fancy attire. It requires mercy, love and something as unseemly as maybe a little hatred.

What Wedding Experts Would Have Done Differently For Their Own Big Days

by Jillian Kramer, BRIDES

Every bride worries she’ll regret some wedding decisions — and it turns out, even the pros look back on their big days with some regrets. So we asked four wedding planners to share what they’d change about their weddings so that you won’t make the same mistakes!

“I wish we’d splurged on a really kick-ass photographer.”
Janice Carnevale, owner of Bellwether Events, tied the knot on April 1 and embraced the quirky date with her own inventive touches — red and lime-colored linens, argyle-patterned invitations, and a cake iced in chocolate frosting. And while she doesn’t regret her eclectic choices, she does wish she’d spent more on a photographer “and paid for an album up front,” she advises.

“I wish that I had not been chewing gum for the reception.”
Michele Velazquez, co-owner of pop-up wedding planning company The Wedding Bomb, wed in a chic off-white and purple affair in Los Angeles, where a highlight was “these amazing artichoke appetizers filled with garlic,” she says, “so I put gum in my mouth to have fresh breath. But in our wedding video, you can see me chomping away — and I shriek every time I see it!” Velazquez now warns brides to find ways other than chewing gum to freshen breath.

“We didn’t hire a videographer, and I still regret it to this day.”
Courtney Wolf, wedding planner and marketing director of Invision Events, says her blush-hued, formal wedding “was the absolute most amazing day of my life.” But because she and her then-fiancé bore the brunt of the bill for their big day, they made cuts when they questioned whether something was “worth it” — including a videographer. “While our photographer blew us away with the effortless and perfect capture of our day, there is nothing that can compare to hearing our vows or me giggle while I’m getting ready or my husband’s emotion as the church doors open and he sees me as his bride, all in real time,” she says. “I do wish I had that piece of the puzzle, even three years later.”

“I would not have had sparklers!”
Victoria Canada, owner of Victoria Canada Weddings and Events, held a festive affair that featured a Mariachi band and margaritas. The party was so much fun, she recalls, she didn’t want to leave. “I would have kept the bar open and kept dancing,” she says, “but we had sparklers — and our guests had them lit and we pretty much had to run! Now, I actually discourage brides from them.” One thing she doesn’t regret? Saying “no” to an open bar. “Our goal was to have a great honeymoon, and that meant having to make some concessions,” she explains. “So, we did not have an open bar — we had beer, wine and margaritas. I think an extra week on the Mediterranean was worth my friends not having a vodka tonic!”

Three Days in an Ashram, Five Lessons Learned

It was a Thursday morning, and I just finished a different kind of meditation. As most of my startup friends know, I am a huge meditation buff, and try my best to do it religiously every morning.

I was logging into my email to tackle the 100s of emails I get daily, and do some mundane work regarding legal, accounting, etc. that all startup founders have to go through.

But, for some reason, I felt a strong urge to take the next train/flight to New Jersey to spend time with Kamlesh Patel (my guru and spiritual global leader) at the Natural Path (Sahaj Marg) Ashram in New Jersey.

Without thinking twice, I jumped on the next Amtrak train for New Jersey. On the train, I finished a finishing a business pitch, tackle three phone calls, and tried my best to get in the right mindset and develop the correct frame of mind before my stay in the Ashram. Trust me, this is a HUGE leap from three years ago when I would resist to step foot.

Being through a transformative three days, here are five lessons I learned:

Lesson #1: Trust your heart — not your head

Luckily after starting meditation, I have opportunities to get some major introspection time before and after sessions in the morning and evening, especially in the ashram. Most people know me as being extremely blunt, to the point, and also having straightforward thinking, but it wasn’t always like that.

Especially if you are managing people, you have to make decisions fast. I have learned after two years that if something keeps coming in my head and bothering me from my day-to-day work, I will sit down in meditation for some time, and see what my heart tells me. 100% of the time, I have never regret it.

Try it now — is something on your mind? Sit down and meditate on it.

Lesson#2: Blood relations are meaningless — love all

When I reached the New Jersey Amtrak station, a family lovingly picked me up from the station greeted me. The best part about this — none of them were “Kulkarni’s” or had any blood relation to me, yet, still drove me one and a half hours away from the station to their home where they fed me and allowed me a place to call mine for the night.

I find myself confused when I hear “I need to spend time with my family.” My thought process is the concept of family should not just stem from your immediate blood family, but everyone human being that you encounter. We have a responsibility to look out for one another, and this was clearly demonstrated in this encounter.

An easy way to do this, call every single person your brother and sister. It may sound weird, but this forced action will later develop in you naturally loving and looking other for the other person. I do it all the time.

Lesson #3: Don’t brood over problems — negate them from your system

Being a startup entrepreneur, you have to make decisions fast. My good friend and spiritual follower Rajesh Setty once told me “If I am sleeping at night, and I cannot sleep, I get up and tell myself that I will never do whatever is keeping me up again.”

This exact situation happened to me when we hired an intern at Insightfully. The intern was doing work, but we weren’t including them in our meetings or discussions. Instead of constantly thinking about the problem and negating it, I ended up negating it from my system, and solving it in the process by resolving this with our co-founders and coming with the next steps road map.

Lesson #4: Balance aspects of life

I had a discussion with my sister, Sonia Dovedy, a successful yoga teacher and wellness coach. Sonia was talking to me about the interlinking of spiritual, material, and health when it comes to success to human beings.

As startup founders, I realized that we do a fantastic job working 15-17 hours a day, but do a terrible job balancing our lives in the aspects that play a fundamental roll in efficiency. For example, if are an overweight founder, try losing some of the weight, start meditating, and then tell me how much more success you have. There is a reason why we need balance for long-term success.

Lesson #5: Just chill

Dating back to when I was starting a course regarding finance, I was extremely concerned with being able to keep up. In the Ashram, I will never forget my sister Kamini Khanjee telling me to “stop worrying about things that aren’t in your control.”

It is hard to fathom at first, but It’s so true! How many of us are constantly “worried about getting enough sales”, or “if hiring someone will impact our business”. The list goes on and on. Learn to do what you do best, and enjoy the ride.

Hilaria Baldwin Posts Underwear Selfie Two Days After Giving Birth

Just two days after giving birth to her son Rafael, Hilaria Baldwin shared an underwear selfie on Instagram, and she looks amazing.

In the shot, Alec Baldwin’s wife is seen posing in front of a mirror while wearing a lacy bra and a pair of black briefs. The brunette beauty also included the following heartfelt caption with her photo:

“Update on us… Rafael is doing wonderfully! He is two days old now. Such a sweet little boy. I’m feeling well, been up with him every hour to two hours. I have been planning on doing post belly photos but didn’t know if I was gonna have the guts to actually follow through. I hope you understand my intention here: I believe it is important to accept and love our form after going through a bit of a battle bringing life into this world. Deep breath, here we go…all the way from my glamorous hospital bathroom. #ShrinkingBaldwinBabyBump #NoShame #LoveYourBody”

The mother of two’s photo was met with plenty of support from her followers, who left comments calling her “brave” for “being honest about post-baby bodies,” and thanking her for sharing a positive message.

Hilaria gave birth to her second child with Alec on June 17. The pair are also parents to daughter Carmen, and Hilaria is stepmother to Alec’s 19-year-old daughter Ireland, from his marriage to Kim Basinger.

Khloe Kardashian Blasts Liposuction Rumors, Says ‘I Bust My Ass’ In The Gym Five Days A Week

If you follow Khloe Kardashian on Instagram, you know she spends a lot of time in the gym. The 30-year-old is seriously proud of all the hard work that has gone into her body transformation, which is why you can’t blame the woman for being sick and tired of rumors saying she cut corners to get her fab figure.

On Tuesday, Kardashian took to Twitter to blast haters spreading rumors that she’d gotten liposuction.

Back in February, Kardashian celebrated the emergence of what she called her “baby abs” and wrote about her ongoing relationship with the gym:

My fitness journey will be a life long journey. Fitness is not about being better than someone else. It’s about being better than you used to be. I’m not where I want to be and who knows if I ever will be,”she wrote. But I am healthier than ever and due to my consistent workouts, I am slowly seeing results. Hi baby abs !! I see you!!! I hope to meet your other ab friends soon (yes I’m talking to my muscles. I’ve never met most of them before).

Looking back at pictures of myself I didn’t realize at the time how unhealthy my lifestyle actually was. People love to call me the fat one but as weird as it sounds I still don’t think I would consider myself fat back then. Definitely overweight and unhealthy, yes. About two years ago I decided to turn to fitness as a form of therapy and as a stress reliever. I started slow and eventually I started working out 4 to 5 days a week. The Days of Petticoats Are Gone With The Wind

Yesterday, my 9-year-old granddaughter ask me what a slip was. She had heard me say something about one and had no clue what I was talking about. I was shocked… until I thought about it. Why should she know what it was? She’d never worn one and probably never seen them in stores. A slip to her was no different than a corset was to my generation.

The only reason I only knew what a corset was because my mother was a big Gone With The Wind fan and I had watched Mammy lace up Scarlett O’Hara so she would have a 16 inch waistline. The first time I watched that scene, I immediately gave thanks that I wasn’t born in that generation. I can’t imagine how it would feel to have my innards squeezed that tight. I have tried wearing Spanx a few times and that was enough to make me miserable. So miserable that on the way home after the dinner we were attending, I peeled them off in the car, rolled the window down and threw them out somewhere on I-65.

2015-05-18-1431971516-3448856-hattie_mcdaniel_vivien_leigh1.jpg

The Difference in Generations

When I was a little girl, I was taught that slips were essential. Until I was about 8 or 9, I wore a crinoline petticoat with layers of ruffles and tulle beneath my 1950s dresses. It itched like the dickens and more than once I got admonished to “stop scratching down there.” They were fun to twirl around in, but that made your dress fly up and heaven forbid someone saw your panties. That was the beginning of my love/hate relationship with slips.

2015-05-18-1431971580-8699813-1950scrinolineunderskirt.jpg

When I outgrew the crinoline slips, I was introduced to whole and half slips. These didn’t twirl and I could see no purpose in them. By that time I was in high school and most of my friends no longer wore them, but to keep the peace at home, I did.

My Grandmother’s Generation.

My grandmother was born in 1913 and wore dresses all her life. My mother tried to get her to wear pants and bought her a couple of lovely (or so she thought) polyester pants suits during the late ’70s. She wore them a few times, then put them in the back of her closet and went back to her dresses. Beneath every dress she ever wore was a slip or a petticoat, which was what she called them.

Because Grandma lived through the Great Depression she never, ever threw anything away, and that included petticoats. The ones she wore in her later years were most likely the same ones she had been wearing 30 years before. She could do that for the whole slips, but not so much for the half ones.

Half slips had elastic waists and elastic eventually wears out. One day while shopping at the local grocery store, Grandma’s petticoat fell off at her feet, somewhere in the produce aisle. She quickly stepped out of it, scooped it up and put it in her purse. We teased her about it unmercifully and that year for Christmas she got at least five new petticoats.

My Aunt’s Generation

My Aunt Betty (not her real name) is also a die-hard petticoat person. Most women these days don’t bother with them, but she does and it paid off for her in a big way a few years ago. We were at church and my husband was leading the singing. My aunt and uncle were seated a few rows in front of me. My husband asked us to stand for the next song and when my aunt stood, the heel of her shoe was on the hem of her skirt. Her skirt had an elastic waist band and so her skirt was pulled down a good 10 inches, exposing her behind. She had on a slip so you really couldn’t see anything but a white expanse of material that wasn’t supposed to be showing.

Everyone seated behind her immediately started trying to stifle their laughter. My husband, who was up front facing the crowd, thought we were laughing at him and checked his fly to see if it was open. It wasn’t, but that was funny too. Then my uncle realizes what is going on and proceeds to try and amend the situation by pulling my aunt’s skirt up for her. She has no idea what he is doing and starts swatting at him with her hymnal. The whole scene was straight from a Chevy Chase movie and of all the funny things that I have seen happen during church, this was one of the top 10 funniest.

Petticoat Junction

There was an old television sit-com called “Petticoat Junction” that I watched as a child. It was about three young girls who lived with their Uncle Joe near a train station. I’m sure those girls wore petticoats (they probably had to), but modern-day women don’t seem to have much use for them. My granddaughter will probably never even know what a slip is. I don’t even own one anymore. Like corsets, girdles and garter belts, petticoats are gone with the wind.

How many times have you heard people blame their genes for their sluggish metabolism, their job for their sedentary lifestyle, or our culture for their addiction to fast food? Mel B Reflects On The Spice Girls Days: ‘We Were 5 Crazy Ladies On A Mission’

With rumors of a possible Spice Girls reunion floating around the web, it’s possible we may see our favorite ’90s girl group back together again. Although Melanie Brown (better known as Scary Spice) couldn’t confirm the reports in a HuffPost Live conversation on Tuesday, the pop star did take a moment to reminisce about the group’s glory days.

“We were just five crazy ladies on a mission,” she told host Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani. “We’re five girls who launched something pretty incredible — girl power — and spread our music. And we’re still good friends to this day.”

The singer added that she and the fellow Spice women are “constantly supporting each other” in their solo pursuits. For Mel B, this means her new app PingTank, while for Victoria Beckham, it’s her eponymous fashion line.

“She’s built an incredible empire,” Mel B said of Beckham. “I wear one of her dresses every now and again. I think they’re amazing and I think she’s amazing.”

And though the group’s largely out doing their own things, they’ve maintained their family-like bond.

“We’re like sisters,” Mel B affirmed. “We get on one minute. We scream, fight and argue. Then we have a cup of tea together and tell each other how much we love each other.”

American Sniper Chris Kyle’s Wife Pens Love Letter On Their Anniversary: I’ll ‘Love You All The Days Of My Life’

“Today, I have a choice. I can bury myself under the covers and acknowledge the pain of missing you and mourn the future anniversaries without you. Or, I can celebrate never having a day without you in my heart because you loved me enough to leave me a lifetime of memories and beauty.”

Those are some the words penned by Taya Kyle on March 17, the day that would’ve marked 13 years of marriage to her husband, the late Navy SEAL Chris Kyle.

Kyle, who was credited with being the most lethal sniper in U.S. history, was shot and killed at a Texas gun range in 2013. His life story became the subject of the Clint Eastwood film “American Sniper,” which was based on the best-selling autobiography of the same name.

To mark their wedding anniversary, Taya posted the poignant love letter on Facebook. It has since gone viral, with more than 530,000 likes.

John Henry Days

John Henry Days

In a glowing review of Colson Whitehead’s first novel, The Intuitionist, the" New York Times Book Review "concluded, "Literary reputations may not always rise and fall as predictably as elevators, but if there’s any justice in the world of fiction, Colson Whitehead’s should be heading toward the upper floors." With John Henry Days, Colson Whitehead delivers on the promise of his critically acclaimed debut in a magnificent new novel: a retelling of the legend of John Henry that sweeps across generations and cultures in a stunning, hilarious, and unsettling portrait of American society. Immortalized in folk ballads, John Henry has been a favorite American hero since the mid-nineteenth century. According to legend, John Henry, a black laborer for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad, was a man of superhuman strength and stamina. He proved his mettle in a contest with a steam drill, only to die of exhaustion moments after his triumph. In John Henry Days, Colson Whitehead transforms the simple ballad into a contrapuntal masterpiece. The narrative revolves around the story of J. Sutter, a young black journalist. Sutter is a "junketeer," a freeloading hack who roams from one publicity event to another, abusing his expense account and mooching as much as possible. It is 1996, and an assignment for a travel Web site takes Sutter to West Virginia for the first annual "John Henry Days" festival, a celebration of a new U.S. postal stamp honoring John Henry. And there the real story of John Henry emerges in graceful counterpoint to Sutter’s thoroughly modern adventure. As he explores the parallels between the lives of these two black men, and between the Industrial Age, which literally killedJohn Henry, and the Digital Age that is destroying J. Sutter’s soul, Whitehead adds multiple dimensions to the myth of the steel-driving man. And in dazzling set pieces, he traces the evolution of the famous ballad over the past century. John Henry Days" "is a novel of extraordinary scope and mythic power that juxtaposes history and popular culture, the blatant bigotry of the past with the more insidious racism of the present, and laugh-out-loud humor with unforgettable poignancy.

Now, if only he could figure out how to convince the knockout redhead with the very large knife that he’s not breaking into her grandmother Flo’s apartment. No. He’s Flo’s upstairs tenant. In need of a serious cup of coffee. Yeah, so he’s wearing only a towel. So what? Liz Atwater isn’t about to take her eyes off this one – and not just because he’s about six feet worth of smirking, hunky gorgeousness, either. She’s had her share of bad luck with men, and some half-naked guy helping himself to your coffee, while looking you up and down way is not a good sign. Something’s going on with Mr. John Preshin. And, Liz intends to do some discreet investigating of her own. He’d better hang on to that towel.

After 100 Days Away, This Air Force Airman Planned A Sweet Homecoming Surprise

Airports during the holidays are generally hellish. But on Friday, the Detroit Metro Airport was actually a rather heartwarming place to be.

Emma Trabue planned to surprise her fiancé, Air Force airman Jon Greko, at the airport when he returned from basic training last week after 100 days apart. The pair got engaged over the phone in October, but hadn’t seen each other since.

In the YouTube video description, Trabue’s sister explains that Emma had asked a family friend who works for Delta Air Lines to help her get a gateway pass so she could go through security and greet Greko at his gate.

Turns out, Greko was in on the plan and had his own surprise in store. As Emma waited at the gate holding a “Welcome Home A1C Greko” sign, passengers exiting her fiancé’s flight handed her red roses one by one. The last one off the plane? Greko, of course, who got down on one knee and properly proposed to her.

Watch the couple’s sweet reunion in the video above.

All in a Day’s Dance

All in a Day’s Dance

All in a Day’s Dance theme is about artistry and self-image.A woman, Truchsia Winbuckle draws characters of dancers who reflect who she would like to be. There is also, one character who represents the manager of her dreams and she gives him all the qualities and power to bring her aspirations to life. While in a reflective state of mind after a concert she has performed in, an enigmatic character appears to her and seduces her with music. She is totally taken into his spell-like adventure and wishes for more. She decides to move away from her parents and make a big move to the city. She finds work, joins an orchestra and goes to university. She runs into a slump in the market in her employment making it hard for her to continue her studies. She falls into the gambling world and gets deeper into hard times. The enigmatic character pays her visits along the way and always seems to know what buttons to push to make her feel exactly what the music she hears is playing. The music unfolds and parallels her daily life becoming her T.W. Suite. She continues to pursue happiness in her love life and career determined to have it all and leave her lone country childhood life behind for good. The enigmatic character becomes a puzzle which she must figure out where the music is coming from and what it means to her so she can be victorious and gain her sense of well-being and gain control of her creative energy.

Happy Days Are Near Again

When stuck for inspiration, songwriters often start to draw up lists. A list can be devoted to any topic that will generate rhymes. If, for instance, the character you’re writing for is the Lord High Executioner of Titipu, you can describe a whole bunch of people to the audience whose presence (should it ever become necessary) would definitely not be missed.

Sometimes a simple device like a calendar can provide inspiration for a musical number. “The Lusty Month of May” (from Lerner & Loewe’s 1960 musical, Camelot) may not be the greatest song ever written for a Broadway musical, but it serves its purpose in moving the show’s plot forward. With an expansive musical arrangement and Sierra Boggess as Guinevere, it can easily delight a BBC Proms audience.

Oscar Hammerstein II used the months of the year for the lead-in to one of the biggest production numbers in 1945’s Carousel. His lyric reads as follows:

“March went out like a lion
A’whippin’ up the water in the bay.
Then April cried and stepped aside,
And along come pretty little May!
May was full of promises
But she didn’t keep ’em quick enough for some
And a crowd of doubtin’ Thomases
Was predictin’ that the summer’d never come.
But it’s comin’ by gum,
You can feel it come,
You can feel it in your heart
You can see it in the ground
You can see it in the trees
You can smell it in the breeze
Look around! Look around! Look around!”

June may have been bustin’ out all over, but August of 2014 was a real bitch. From volcanic eruptions to videotaped beheadings, from the heavily militarized police force in Ferguson, Missouri to the social media’s collective angst over the fact that President Obama wore a tan suit to a press conference, August of 2014 was a month that put shark week to shame.

And yet hope springs eternal. Like Tom Wingfield (the male protagonist created by Tennessee Williams for The Glass Menagerie who often went to the movies to escape the suffocating cruelties of his family’s hopeless existence), I always look to the movies and live theatre to renew my sense of optimism. And what better place to start than with Jerome Kern and Buddy DeSylva’s “Look For The Silver Lining” (sung here by Alexander Gray and Marilyn Miller in 1929’s film adaptation of Sally).

For people like Serial Mom’s Beverly Sutphin, Labor Day may mean that white shoes are no longer in season. But for me, it’s the start of the theatre season and a brand new supply of hope. Bottom line? Nothing ventured, nothing gained!

* * * * * * * * * *

The first two experiences of my 2014-215 season completely charmed and disarmed me, bringing a smile to my face and hope to my heart. First up at bat was a two-hour animated feature by Hiroyuki Okiura with an absolutely delightful musical score by Mina Kubota.

With all the unnecessary brutality in today’s world, A Letter To Momo provides a breath of fresh air by introducing audiences to three yokai (mischievous goblins) who have been sent down to earth on a very specific mission. They may be the silliest creatures to arrive on screen since Wipoc (Jim Carrey) and Zeebo (Daman Wayans) landed in the San Fernando Valley in 1988’s Earth Girls Are Easy.

2014-10-20-momoposter.jpg

Poster art for A Letter To Momo

Okiura’s three yokai had been locked in a book of drawings stashed away in an attic until Momo Miyaura (an 11-year-old girl who traveled with her recently widowed mother from Tokyo to the remote island of Shio) temporarily freed them. Only Momo can see the impish spirit creatures who waste no time stealing fruit and vegetables from local fields and creating chaos wherever they go.

  • Iwa, the purported leader of the pack, may look like a fearsome ogre, but he’s harmless, clumsy, and quite adorable.
  • Kawa is a greenish creature with a frog-like face who is vain, lazy, hates eating fish (because they have so many scales) and is more than a little bit ridiculous.
  • Mame is the smallest of the three, with a long tongue that could make Jim Carrey’s Wipoc jealous, a childlike sense of wonder, and a very weak memory.

2014-10-20-momo1.jpg

A scene from A Letter To Momo

While the three spirit creatures are trying to help Momo’s deceased father pass over to the other side, in their clumsiness they have allowed the young girl to take possession of their travel passport to “the above.” Depressed at having to leave her comfortable life in Tokyo, Momo is also wrestling with the guilt from having had an argument with her father (over tickets to a performance by the Vienna Boys’ Choir) on the day before he died. Even as her mother, Ikuko, tries to encourage Momo to make friends with Yota and Umi, Momo can’t begin to tell her new acquaintances what she keeps seeing when no one else is looking.

2014-10-20-momo2.jpg

Momo and Mame are at a loss for words in A Letter To Momo.

The film’s ravishing handmade animation is breathtaking from start to finish, with just the right amount of silliness to make A Letter To Momo appealing to children of all ages. Here’s the trailer:

* * * * * * * * * *

As I headed out to Walnut Creek to attend the opening night of Center Rep’s 2014-2015 season, the last thing I expected was to fall in love with a new jukebox musical. But, in the spirit of giving credit where credit is due, let’s just say that I came, I saw, and I was conquered (near Concord!).

Jukebox musicals are a peculiar genre that test one’s loyalty to certain singers, songwriters, and singer/songwriters from the past. With shows like Beatlemania or Motown: The Musical, the evening turns into a spectacle buoyed by the music (although the urgency with which the show is paced often involves getting as many familiar numbers onstage as possible).

Jukebox musicals like Jersey Boys and Beautiful: The Carole King Musical are dedicated to particular talents and songs of their time. What keeps these shows afloat is not just the lucrative pull of nostalgia (and their solid production values), but the fact that their books are strong enough to make the audience care about the characters onstage. Despite its shrewd use of ABBA’s impressive catalog of hit songs, Mamma Mia! can be a pretty vapid bore.

Lest anyone forget, the term “jukebox musical” also refers to music which gained its popularity from being played on jukeboxes in diners and coffee shops around America. While I might like to think of shows like 1968’s George M!, 1972’s Oh, Coward! and 1976’s Side By Side By Sondheim as “pre-jukebox” musicals, the truth is that the songs featured in those shows never gained popularity by people tossing quarters into jukeboxes.

Written and directed by Roger Bean (who created The Marvelous Wonderettes and Winter Wonderettes), Life Could Be A Dream is a loving half-tribute, half-spoof that takes the best of both approaches and adds a curious twist. Not only does the show include 23 hits from the doo-wop era (ranging from “Sh-Boom,” “Get A Job,” and “Fools Fall In Love” to “Duke of Earl,” “Lonely Teardrops,” and “Rama Lama Ding Dong”), many have received glorious new musical arrangements by Roger Bean, Jon Newton, and Steve Parsons that can make audiences listen to these old standards from a decidedly fresh perspective.

The plot is simple enough. Denny Varney (Ryan Drummond) is an aspiring musician who is still living in his mother’s basement five years after graduating from Springfield High School. Together with his close but extremely nerdy friend, Eugene Johnson (Tim Homsley), he hopes to enter the “Dream of a Lifetime” talent search being promoted by radio station WOPR (“The Big Whopper”).

While Denny and Eugene are completely lacking in social skills and the kind of personal connections which might help them go places, their friend Wally Patton (Jerry Lee) most definitely is not. A checker at Piggly Wiggly whose father is a local preacher, Wally is an active force in the local church who knows everyone in town (including the contest’s producer),

After being allowed to join Denny’s group (instantly expanding it from a duo to a trio), Wally sets up an audition for “Big Earl” Franklin, the owner of Big Stuff Auto who is looking for a new musical group that can promote his business. Instead of “Big Earl,” the boys meet Skip Henderson (Derek Keeling), the shop’s head mechanic who is a slightly pudgy Elvis look-alike. Tension quickly starts to mount.

  • Not only does Skip have eyes for the boss’s daughter, Lois (Sharon Rietkerk), he’s well aware that one wrong move could cause him to lose his job (which he desperately needs).
  • Although it’s obvious that adding Skip to Denny and the Dreamers would bring in “Big Earl’s” sponsorship, Denny wants to be the lead singer and has no desire to cede the spotlight to Skip.
  • Meanwhile, Eugene has never gotten over the fact that Lois broke his heart when they were in third grade.

With choreography by Lee Martino and music direction by Brandon Adams, Life Could Be A Dream turned out to be a joyous evening in the theatre that benefitted from Michael Carnahan’s unit set and Bobby Pearce’s costume designs. Ryan Drummond continues to entertain Bay area audiences as the high-spirited Denny Varney while Tim Homsley added to a growing track record of impressing audiences with his strong vocals and obvious skill for physical comedy.

Jerry Lee made a notable contribution to the group as Wally (with a hysterically funny silent moment of unexpected gay awareness) as did Derek Keeling, who crooned and ground his hips nicely as Skip. One of the show’s most sparkling assets was Sharon Rietkerk’s classically trained voice, which added a new dimension to many old standards while strengthening Lois’s character.

Life Could Be A Dream premiered in Hollywood in 2009, where it enjoyed a 12-month run and received the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award and LA Weekly Theatre Award, as well as the Back Stage Garland Award for Outstanding Musical. Current plans are focused on a national tour prior to an off-Broadway run. At every performance, audiences will have the opportunity to fret over:

  • Whether Denny and Eugene can go from singing with the Crooning Crabcakes of Springfield High to a genuine career in show business.
  • Whether Eugene can leave behind a steady job in his father’s sweet shop.
  • Whether Lois can overcome her parents’ objection to having their daughter be seen socializing with a grease monkey from the wrong side of town.

Rest assured there is a happy ending and the audience goes home with goofy smiles of satisfaction plastered all over their faces.

Bill O’Reilly Is Just So Mad At Stephen Colbert These Days

Despite just about everyone telling him that his plan to defeat ISIS using a vast mercenary army is really, really terrible, Bill O’Reilly is not backing down. (Surprised?)

On Monday, O’Reilly lashed out at frequent foe Stephen Colbert, who had devoted a segment to ridiculing his scheme.

Colbert, O’Reilly groused, was a “dumb” person with “no bleeping clue” (he actually said “bleeping”) about what to do in the Middle East — unlike O’Reilly, whose plan has the support of 70 percent of respondents in a poll on www.billoreilly.com.

Twenty-Four Days

Sometimes life forces us into uncharted territory, as Dr. Miranda Ross discovers when circumstances lead her to seek employment on a cruise line specializing in all lesbian cruises. Although she’s single and surrounded by women, she has little time to socialize and even less inclination. She’s made promises to herself, promises she intends to keep. And keep them she does, until she meets the ship’s head fitness trainer, Jamie Jeffries. Jamie has the kind of body and good looks most people only dream of and unfortunately, a reputation to match. The buzz on the ship is that she can have anyone she wants and often does. Miranda fights valiantly to avoid Jamie and the unwanted attraction that seems to have a will of its own. She’s strong and determined . . . but a lot can happen in twenty-four days.

‘Mad Men’ Review: All In ‘A Day’s Work’ For Don

Do not read on unless you have seen “A Day’s Work,” Sunday’s Season 7 episode of “Mad Men.”

Some wounds are so deep that they never go away, and you have to re-learn to how to accept them and maneuver around them again and again.

The look on Don’s face in the last scene was the highlight of “A Day’s Work,” which otherwise had some issues that I’ll get to in a minute. That short phrase that Sally uttered as she exited the car — “I love you” — transformed Don completely. All his defenses and masks were gone; he was just struck dumb. Floored.

Don Draper (and/or Dick Whitman) continually waits for the other shoe to drop. He’s always waiting for people to find out who and what he really is and then drop him, dismiss him, hate him. We’ve seen the cycle again and again: People find out his real identity or facts from his true past and he waits for that relationship to crumble. Personally and professionally, he puts up a confident front because he’s so very sure no one would ever love him or need him just because of who he really is. (That pretending will probably never end for him — witness how he dressed up for Dawn in order to lie to her about how he spends his days.)

So for Sally, of all people, to casually say she loved him — well, that was the last thing he expected. Few people have more of a reason to hate him, after all the crap Don’s pulled over the years. Sally finding him with his married mistress was just the last straw. The Don-Sally story line — the only “date” on this rather grim Valentine’s Day — wasn’t about the affirmation of a father-daughter bond, it was about Don paying his respects to his dead relationship with his daughter. He thought the one bond that meant the most to him was unfixable. He was wrong.

And please understand, I don’t think Don assumes people will reject him because he was the dirt-poor son of a prostitute or a guy who stole another man’s identity during a war. Don waits for people to reject him because he feels he is innately disgusting, contemptible, unlovable. He feels that something is sick and wrong in his soul, and he simply waits for others to find that part of him and then kick him to the curb. Sometimes he speeds the destruction along, because waiting for the inevitable rejection can be torturous.

When confronted with the fact that Sally’s willing to let him back in to her life and still loves him, he has to process the idea that maybe he’s not an intrinsically disgusting, unlovable human being. The seven-season arc of “Mad Men” may well be the story of Don’s journey from thinking he’s fundamentally incapable of and unworthy of love to his realization that he’s just another screwup, just another flawed mortal like the rest of us, just an average schmuck who makes mistakes and tries to fix them. He’s not necessarily exceptional in the height of his attainments or the depth of his mistakes. He’s just a guy who has at least one person in his life who loves him despite — and quite possibly because — of who he is.

The look on Don’s face is realization that he may be worthy of Sally’s love. But Don has to keep re-learning that it’s possible for him to be loved despite his lies, despite his past, despite his self-hatred. But I don’t expect this to be the last time he tells lies or drives his life into a ditch. But maybe he’s getting incrementally better at digging himself out of various holes.

Of course, however she feels about her dad, Sally is on to his bullsh*t like a laser beam. She knows he’s lying to himself and Megan about the state of their marriage. She knows the bicoastal thing will never work. She doesn’t quite see how he can fix the work situation. (Sidebar: Given that Don has a non-compete clause in his contract, how can that situation be repaired? If the firm doesn’t bring Don back, what can he do? Some have suggested he and Peggy start their own firm, but I don’t know if that would work, given the non-compete. Still, as Pete noted, breaking away to create an upstart is a favored strategy among Don’s cohorts.)

Bravado-filled lunches and afternoons in front of the TV aside, Don isn’t quite sure how to fix his life or move forward. And it’s a sign of progress that he doesn’t try to spin Sally or make things sound better than they were. The show might move at a glacial pace in some ways — it’s not unusual to see Don and other characters go around in circles over the course of multiple seasons — but it’s a sign of progress that Don told Sally that his actions and deceptions made him feel “ashamed.” The Don of Season 1 never would have admitted that to anyone — perhaps not even himself.

If Don’s progressed a bit, Peggy appears to have regressed, and not in ways that make a whole lot of sense to me. A lot of the contrived story line about the roses just did not work for me, and to depict Peggy as nearly unhinged over the floral misunderstanding left a bad taste in my mouth. Not great, Bob.

First of all, I know in the “Mad Men” timeline Peggy’s affair with Ted ended about three months ago, but for viewers, all of that occurred nearly a year ago. However deep the bond was between them during their relatively brief affair, to viewers, that relationship is kind of old news, and it’s just poor calibration on the part of the show to depict Peggy as still being this upset at this juncture. Yes, he promised to leave his wife for her, and yes, she was deeply hurt, but there needed to be more setup for this kind of behavior to seem plausible.

Peggy is someone who generally handles the tough things that are thrown at her in a considered way, and for her to flip out on Shirley in front of a big portion of the office just didn’t feel right. Her faintly hysterical messages for Ted, her quivering sulks, her rage at Dawn — they were all just too much. None of it quite tracked with the Peggy I’ve known for seven seasons, and though I can think of logical reasons for Shirley to avoid confronting Peggy with the truth, it was a little annoying that she never just told her where the flowers came from. It was one of those aggravating situations that would not have existed had one character uttered one sentence to another (what is this, “Lost”?).

Then there’s the whiff of something unpleasant around the fact that the more successful Peggy is, the more “Mad Men” appears to be determined to depict her personal life as a disaster. It’s almost as if the show feels it has to show her as successful but lovelorn, but that’s something of a cliche. For the longest time on TV, the most high-powered professional women were depicted as unhappy in love or incapable of sustaining relationships, because, Lord knows, it’s not possible for a woman to be successful in both arenas. Yeesh.

Yes, professional women in the ’60s faced many different kinds of roadblocks, but Peggy is a dynamic, thoughtful, attractive and intelligent woman. I find it hard to believe her entire social life would be sad, disappointing or constricted, but it always is on this show. The circles that Peggy is going in on the love-life front are starting to feel quite stale.

That said, it’s understandable that Dawn and Shirley would tread lightly around their bosses. There’s no doubt that they are under extra scrutiny and extra pressure due to their race (“Keep pretending. That’s your job.”). Bert Cooper is at least partially up front about his racism, but it percolates through almost every other interaction as well. It was certainly part of the reason the detestable Lou demanded a new secretary. No wonder Joan, dressed in appropriate fire-engine red, exploded at Peggy and Jim Cutler; having to put up with all the staffing whims of the senior staff as well as their prejudices and immaturity is just too much for one person. As Cutler pointed out, it’s more than time that the firm split her job into two positions.

Jim is one of the few people who seems to be acting fairly reasonably a good amount of the time, but at SC&P these days, ill will, sniping and pettiness is the order of the day. Truth be told, I found this episode a bit of chore at times, given that it could have been titled, “Sour People Being Mean to Each Other.” Secrets were rustled up, bonds were broken and various pairings didn’t quite match up; it was very “Mad Men”-esque but much of it felt almost too familiar. Perhaps, like Pete, we were meant to feel a bit out of sorts and disjointed. There were so many instances of people talking past each other or not quite connecting.

Roger tried to banter with Lou, but it didn’t work because Lou’s not a bantering guy. Pete tried to commiserate with Ted, but Ted wasn’t having it. The Los Angeles and New York offices tried to hash things out on the phone, but the connection kept failing and everyone ended up irritable and sore. Lou may have symbolized that dislocated feeling with his cry of “It’s not my problem!” That is the whole problem, in a sense: The firm isn’t pulling together as a team, and the enterprise is starting to feel vaguely unsustainable.

Yet despite all the obstacles in their path, Don connected with his daughter, so perhaps there’s hope left yet in this swirling morass of neurosis.

A few bullet points:

  • This week in Lou is the Absolute Worst: “I know you can’t fire her.” I love that Dawn fired many truth bombs in Lou’s direction after he was so awful to her — and how terrific is it that she she still works at the firm? She even got a promotion. That said, I do not think Shirley is going to have much time for Lou’s patronizing nonsense.
  • Sally smoking and talking smack about Betty is the scene we didn’t know we truly needed, right?
  • I’m not quite sure why Roger caved in to Jim Cutler regarding the situation with Pete and the car dealers’ association. Perhaps given that Roger’s fairly checked out of the office these days and is pursuing various naked activities outside the office most of the time, perhaps he can’t really mount an adequate campaign for power.
  • One of the few funny moments in the episode was Ted calling out, “Goodnight, Bonnie!” during Pete and Bonnie’s late-night office tryst.
  • By inviting his daughter to do a dine-and-dash with him, Don was literally asking Sally to be his partner in crime. He was joking about skipping out on the check, but there’s no doubt that Sally has picked up on many of Don’s quietly devious ways.
  • Don’s joke about the check worked better than comparing his daughter to Betty, which was certainly not the way to go. Good for Sally that she gave as good as she got, registering a direct hit with her poignant comment about Sylvia.
  • “Hard to believe your cat has the money.” Oh snap. Bearded Stan for all the win.
  • I cannot get over my love for Sally’s embroidered coat.
  • “It looks like you have a lot of work to do.” Oh snap. Nice zinger, Sally.
  • Another funny moment: Roger repeatedly apologizing to the secretary for his risque comments in the partners’ meeting. He’s evolved enough to know that his comments aren’t acceptable, but he’ll never really change.

The Final Trailer For ‘X-Men: Days Of Future Past Is A Traveler Of Both Time & Space

On let the sun beat down upon the final “X-Men: Days of Future Past” trailer. Twentieth Century Fox and director Bryan Singer use an instrumental version of Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir” to score the last tease before the film’s May 23 release. It works, not just because the song’s lyrics (“I am a traveler of both time and space, to be where I have been”) fit in with the film’s plot: In the post-apocalyptic future, Professor X and Magneto (Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen) send Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) back to the past to change the course of history. The time travel puts Jackman in the same scenes as “X-Men: First Class” cast members Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult and Michael Fassbender, and allows him to integrate with the new “X-Men” while still keeping old faves (hey, Halle Berry!) involved in the story as well. Watch the “X-Men: Days of Future Past” trailer, and ignore any and all similarities between the Sentinels and the Helicarriers in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”

“3 Days to Kill” Proves Costner’s Still Got It

Movie Review Jackie K Cooper
“3 Days to Kill” (Relativity)

Kevin Costner is starring in the new action flick “3 Days to Kill” and he is bringing his charm and charisma with him. Costner has co-stars in the movie, notably Amber Heard and Hailee Steinfeld, but the success or failure of this film rests on his shoulders and his unique talent. At one time in his career every project he touched turned to gold but in the last few years that “Midas touch” has evaporated. This movie however indicates a large portion of the Costner charm is still on view.

Costner plays government hit man Ethan Renner. He is one of the best in his business but his health is deteriorating. Faced with the diagnosis that he is dying Ethan returns to Paris where his wife Christine (Connie Nielsen) and daughter Zoey (Steinfeld) live. He wants to connect with them one last time.

Ethan does not tell his daughter of his condition which means that her hostile feelings towards him continue. To further complicate his life, a CIA operative named Vivi (Heard) tells him she has an experimental drug that can extend his life. She will provide it if he will do one last job for the Agency. He agrees even though he has promised his wife he is out of this business.

The film, which is based on a screenplay by Luc Bresson among others, revs up the violence quotient and keeps Ethan dodging bullets. Bresson is the man behind the celebrated action films “Taken” and “The Transporter.” He definitely knows how to keep audiences enthralled in the action on screen.

As Ethan, Costner creates the same kind of romantic hero he perfected in movies such as “The Bodyguard” and “Field of Dreams.” In this film Ethan picks Zoey up in his arms to carry her to safety. This brings back those chilling moments when he did the same for Whitney Houston in “The Bodyguard.”

Heard, Steinfeld and Nielsen give strong support to Costner in this film. Heard creates a character who is a cool killer but also an alluring ally. Nielsen adds to the emotionalism of the film as the woman who hates what Ethan does but loves him just the same. Steinfeld makes Zoey as complex and adorable as any teen can be.

The film is rated PG-13 for profanity, brief nudity and violence.

This movie is not without its flaws. The violent scenes are a bit redundant and the length of the film is too long. Still for those who have wanted Costner’s star to return to its orbit “3 Days To Kill” is a pleasant surprise.

I scored “3 Days to Kill” a slain 6 out of 10.

Welcome to Sales Management: The First 90 Days … and Beyond An Operating Guide for New Sales Managers

Welcome to Sales Management: The First 90 Days … and Beyond An Operating Guide for New Sales Managers

Insurance policies, earth moving equipment, chemicals, telecommunications, computer hardware, software, pharmaceuticals, office equipment, time-shares, security systems, real estate, e-commerce products and services, leasing, professional services, recruiting, financial services … the list of products and services marketed and sold by business to business companies seems endless. But all these companies have one thing in common … the need for sales managers who can lead, hire, train, drive the business, evaluate performance, and create an environment conducive for success. There are few more critical positions in any organization than sales managers. So much rides on the shoulders of these warriors. During the first three months on the job, it’s not uncommon to find new sales managers running in circles, making wrong turns and even getting lost. It can take three months just to get acclimated; three more to become semi-proficient; and longer yet to succeed … consistently. Success in sales management hinges on an ability to lead people and to manage process in an environment created, fostered and groomed by the sales manager. Welcome to Sales Management is written for prospective sales managers, newly appointed sales managers, sales managers with limited formal training, and senior management wanting its sales managers to succeed quickly. After finishing this book, the reader will know what to do, when to do it, and most importantly … how to do it. Managing sales representatives is not for everyone. But if you or someone in your company is a leader, someone who revels in finding talented people and convincing them to come to work for your company, in training and coaching rookies and veterans alike, in driving individuals to succeed by bringing out the best in each of them, and in recognizing excellence while stamping out mediocrity … Welcome to Sales Management is a must read.

New Year’s Resolutions Can Be Made 365 Days a Year

Feb. 24, 2008 is not a special day for most. It was a Sunday. I could not tell you what the weather was like here in Orlando that day. In fact, I do not remember a whole lot about that day.

The only thing I remember is that was the day I decided to change my life forever. It was the day I decided to lose over 200 pounds.

Funny thing is, I went to the doctor for a physical in January of 2008. He told me that without taking my heart rate medication and cholesterol medication I would probably not live to see 34. He was angry when he spoke to me. He stormed out of the room. In fact, I have never seen a doctor do that.  He pleaded with me to change my life. For my family and myself.

Yet, when I left, I stopped at Taco Bell on the way home.

In December of 2007 I found out that my wife and I would be able to have children. This news was huge. I wanted to lose weight so we were able to. Yet, after hearing the news, I overate for a couple of months.

Earlier in 2007, I saw my wife cry about my weight. It was the only time I ever saw this happen. It broke my heart. I knew I had to do something about my health.

Yet, I overate months after the incident.

And then in 2006 at work, my boss told me he could not watch me kill myself and walked out of the restaurant that day. It was embarrassing, but I knew he cared about me. I still overate a couple of years after.

There is nothing special about Feb. 24. I did not see a sign from God or read a motivational quote or get any tough love the day before. I just decided to lose weight. I was ready to change and made a commitment to myself to be successful.

And I was. In 2008 I lost 200 pounds. I started to work out. I gained self- confidence in myself and really got out of my shell.

It did not start Jan. 1, 2008.

People talk about New Year’s resolutions now. What they want to do for the next year and what they want to accomplish. I have written before that I am not a fan of them.

I am wrong though. I think that everyone should have a goal, write it down and really focus on it. Even if you do not want to share it with others, it should be something you can peek at from time to time to motivate yourself.

Funny thing is, most people go out for New Year’s Eve. They drink and eat a little too much and then rest or do nothing on Jan. 1. Then they are bummed because Jan. 2 is around, and the year is shot.

Well, it is not. A New Year’s resolution can be any time. You can start one now. Most people wait for Jan. 1 because it is a special day.

So is Feb. 24. It is the day I decided to change my life.

And the day you decided to become better, it is a special day.

You have 365 of them every year.

Thin Thighs in 30 Days

Thin Thighs in 30 Days

A revised and updated edition of the New York Times–bestselling diet and fitness classic. Everything that’s old is new again . . . and sometimes with good reason. With its irresistible title–after all, what woman doesn’t want thinner thighs and quick?–this book flew out of stores when it was first published in 1982. Author Wendy Stehling, a former advertising executive, crafted this astonishingly effective program after polling all the many models and dancers she worked with on a daily basis as to how they achieved and maintained their enviable slender thighs. And decades (and many thousands of diet and fitness books) later, this book still contains one of the simplest and smartest diet/fitness programs known to womankind. The Thin Thighs in 30 Days singular, three-pronged approach consists of: The Work-Off: four essential leg exercises to be performed each day for thirty days The Walk-Off: a brisk walk to be taken each day for thirty days The Weight-Off: a calorie-counting program to be followed each day for 30 days And the results? They’re indisputable! Fully revised and updated according to the latest in diet and fitness research, this new edition of Thin Thighs in 30 Days is destined to inspire a whole new generation of women to believe that they too can have thin thighs in thirty days.
