Death Stranding Review

After the past three years of cryptic and confusing teaser trailers, the question on everyone’s lips has been, “What exactly is Death Stranding?” Well, now we know, and the answer is… complicated. The first game from famed designer Hideo Kojima since his dramatic departure from publisher Konami and his long-running Metal Gear franchise is a boldly inventive slab of sci-fi, fastidiously crafted to host to some of the most breathtaking sights I’ve ever witnessed in any medium – video game or otherwise. It’s also a cross-country crawl that frequently finds itself mired in an exhausting amount of inventory management, backtracking, one-note mission design, and unprecedentedly arduous travel. It’s evident that Kojima and his team at Kojima Productions have worked extremely hard to build Death Stranding, but it’s also painfully clear that they expect us to match their determination in order to fully enjoy it.

Courage Under Siege: Starvation, Disease, and Death in the Warsaw Ghetto

New – The story of the Warsaw ghetto is one of the most tragic episodes in the Second World War. Using a so-called “threat of typhus” as their “scientific” justification for quarantine, the Nazis crammed almost a half million Jews into a small quarter of the city, depriving them of food, clean water, adequate sanitation, and medical supplies. For three years, from 1940 to 1943, the ghetto inhabitants were packed seven or more to a room, struggling incessantly against starvation, disease, and dea

When Death Comes in Close

I’m so acutely aware of Death in the field right now.

Always with us, Death is. And yet I’ve been carefully and heartfully tracking, as I know so many of us have been, the very recent deaths of several people in close social circles of mine; noticing the holy ripples these deaths create, through the hearts of loved ones, and everyone their lives then touch — rippling out, making waves, through the sacred web and field of life we blessedly share.

Whether it’s a death from heart-wrenching suicide, or after a long-battled physical disease, or due to a tragic accident, or as a sudden, unexpected surprise, there’s nothing like Death Medicine to bring us so intimately close with the mysterious, precarious edge of aliveness we live with: our precious mortal breath pressed up against the holy, vast unknown.

We wailingly grieve our lost one, fluctuating between glorious celebration of our beloved’s beauty, humbled gratitude to have been blessed with such a miraculous love, and then utter devastation in the face of our losing them, and our world losing them. Sometimes reveling in bittersweet joy and relief upon the passing, knowing that the suffering their life may have included has been released, transmuted and transcended now; they are flying free.

Or perhaps we carefully watch from the periphery those closest in to the loss; our hands resting on our tender, beating hearts, empathizing, bowing, sending love, sending prayers that their grieving hearts might just keep breaking open even wider into the love that holds it all.

Counting our blessings, cherishing those closest to us, while knowing it is truly just a matter of time before we all return to the other side.

When Death comes in close enough to touch us personally, we think of everyone we love so dearly, and remember, at least for a moment, that all form is temporary and fleeting, and know that we, along with all of life, are present here, embodied like this in our world, for only a brief moment.

We look down at our own slowly aging hands, our own bodies, breathing, full of blessed life for now. We pull our beloved children in close to us, and breathe their scent deeply in. We behold our lovers, our parents, our furry creatures, our dear friends, and even those we don’t know, and see them through fresh eyes, taking in their light, their warmth, their utterly unique beauty.

With Death Medicine close we remember to notice what it feels like as the soles of our feet touch the earth, and as the sun kindly lifts our face to kiss us, we notice the sweet smell of flowers on the wind. We revel at sunsets and starshine. We wonder at the mysterious animating force filling these bodies, infusing these senses, only for a time.

We notice when we’re dancing how much gravity loves us to lean in and taste this delicious place where breath and sweat, music and movement allow us to be taken, swallowed up by Life’s aliveness.

We notice, in Death’s presence, if we’re lucky, what, if anything, at this moment of our lives is still left for us unlived; what remains unspoken, unblessed, unthanked, unacknowledged, unforgiven, unloved, unsung?

We notice what we’ve been postponing, and we feel the sacred urge to leap.

We notice our fear of really loving and living life in the way we yearn too. And then we notice our even deeper fear: of waiting even another instant to show up fully for these lives of love we took birth for. What did we come to say, to give, to live, to serve? And what on earth are we waiting for?

We notice that we are alive, and we are surrounded, literally surrounded and graced: by the living and the dying and the dead. Led by the light of our ancestors and the dreams of our unborn great-grandchildren.

And we notice that we truly love to live, to take our humble place in the great circle of life, and we confess quietly to our own hearts how vulnerable we feel in this love and this aliveness.

We pray for right relationship with all of life. We pray for clarity, humility, maturity, discipline, discernment, dignity and integrity. We pray for wisdom, empathy, truth, kindness and compassion.

And then we bow to one another and to ourselves. We bow to this Death Medicine that never fails to shake our hearts awake to Life. We stand at the threshold of inevitable death, and we say to Life: “I give in. I surrender. Yes.”

The Death of Sweet Mister By Daniel Woodrell (Paperback)

His mother, Glenda, is the one person who loves him-she calls him Sweet Mister and attempts to boost his confidence and give him hope for his future. Into this small-town Ozarks mix comes Jimmy Vin Pearce, with his shiny green T-bird and his smart city clothes. Russell Crowe Reacts To Death Of John Nash, ‘A Beautiful Mind’ Mathematician

John Nash, the Nobel Prize-winning mathematician who was depicted in the 2001 film “A Beautiful Mind,” died Saturday in a car accident. Russell Crowe, who portrayed Nash in the film, tweeted on Sunday about the Nobel laureate.

Soon after, “A Beautiful Mind” director Ron Howard tweeted about the death of Nash and his wife, Alicia, and how it was “an honor” to tell their story.

The film’s producer Brian Grazer also shared his condolences on Twitter.

John Nash, 86, and Alicia Nash, 82, were ejected from a taxi when the car crashed into the guardrail on the New Jersey Turnpike, according to the New Jersey State Police. NJ.com reported that the two were not wearing seat belts.

“A Beautiful Mind,” which won four Oscars, followed Nash’s pioneering work in game theory. The film also recounted Nash’s struggle with mental illness.

Born In Death

Born In Death

Eve wasn’t sure what it said about her that she was more comfortable in the morgue than a baby boutique. And she didn’t care. The scent of death was the familiar. Rushing to the murder scenes of a tortured young woman, Eve is far more at home than when organising best friend Mavis’s baby shower. And then one of Mavis’s guests – the young, pregnant Tandy – disappears into thin air. Eve steps in, but when the facts begin to blur with the earlier murders, she unearths a chilling trail of deception and cold-blooded greed, leading to a terrifying hunt to find Tandy before time runs out. ‘Fast-paced, superbly crafted’ Library Journal

Soundtrack to Life & Death

Soundtrack to Life & Death

University student Christian Routledge has just killed his long-time friend Isobel Goudie. She had asked him on several occasions to end her life and now he has complied. There is no trace of the body. He has reported the death using the pseudonym Floyd Ramon. It’s 1975 and Christian, in his final year of uni, wants to see bands, writes songs for any interested artist, and experience the kaleidoscope of colour float around him. He sees almost all music in colour. Some songs even come dressed in clothing. Both music and song lyrics influence much of what he thinks and says. He is sometimes Christian, sometimes Floyd. Christian wants to please his parents, pass his exams and get a job. Floyd wants to write songs and disappear in the music. It is music that is the problem and the reason he called for the ambulance to take his dead girlfriend, according to Sally the psychologist and the quite obnoxious Dr Jack Coruscate. What disturbs them more are the voices in Christian’s head. Dead people had spoken to him from a young age including his cousin who died of leukaemia. The killer of the Beaumont children speaks to him, or so he thinks. Labelled as a schizophrenic he is coerced into an Adelaide psychiatric hospital. Sally the psychologist tries to determine who is real and who is not by delving into his past. After hearing how Floyd’s fascination with music was instrumental in the killing of his friend, Sally and Dr Coruscate devise a therapy, a therapy that leads Christian through a music quiz show, three cities, more death and the road to freedom. He has three women who care about them. Two are real. One is imagined. They all help him avoid Dr Coruscate and find his release, a beautiful haemorrhage as he puts it. The story of Christian and Floyd is a story of music, madness, love and murder. It is also a story about releasing the artist within.

Dealing with Dying, Death, and Grief during Adolescence

Dealing with Dying, Death, and Grief during Adolescence

For some, life’s introduction to death and grief comes early, and when it does it can take many forms. Not only does Dealing with Dying, Death, and Grief during Adolescence tackle them all, it does so with David Balk’s remarkable sensitivity to and deep knowledge of the pressures and opportunities adolescents face in their transition from childhood to adulthood. In seamless, jargon-free language, Balk brings readers up to date with what we know about adolescent development, because over time such changes form the backstory we need to comprehend the impact of death and bereavement in an adolescent’s life. The book’s later chapters break down the recent findings in the study of life-threatening illness and bereavement during adolescence. And, crucially, these chapters also examine interventions that assist adolescents coping with these difficulties. Clinicians will come away from this book with both a grounded understanding of adolescent development and the adolescent experience of death, and they’ll also gain specific tools for helping adolescents cope with death and grief on their own terms. For any clinician committed to supporting adolescents facing some of life’s most difficult experiences, this integrated, up-to-date, and deeply insightful text is simply the book to have. David E. Balk is professor in the department of health and nutrition sciences at Brooklyn College (CUNY), where he directs the graduate program in thanatology. He is the author of Adolescent Development: Early Through Late Adolescence, Helping the Bereaved College Student, and several other books on death and bereavement. He is also co-editor of the 2nd edition of the Handbook of Thanatology (Routledge, 2013).

Dance of Death

Dance of Death

In ‘Lethal Beauty’, Kimberly Renee Poole, 21, led a double life. The Winston-Salem, North Carolina area housewife and mother was also a topless dancer at a strip club. She craved jewellery, designer clothing, and adulterous affairs with both men and women. Brent Poole, her hopelessly devoted spouse, could deny her nothing. But that wasn’t enough for Renee. She wanted his money and his life. In ‘Infernal Triangle’, murder moved from fantasy to reality after Renee Poole began an affair with John Boyd Frazier, a patron at the club where she worked. On the night of June 9, 1998, on the pretext of celebrating their third wedding anniversary, Poole lured her husband to an oceanfront hotel in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. While their young daughter slept in the hotel room, Renee made love to Brent on the deserted beach – then delivered him to Frazier, who shot him dead. ‘American Nightmare’ – from the start, police knew Renee’s story didn’t add up, and the investigation that followed exposed the dark details of how Brent Poole’s marriage to his dream woman ended in cold blood. Author, Dale Hudson’s gripping account of this high-profile case of greed, lust and murder includes extensive interviews with Renee Poole herself, whose dance of death landed her in prison for life.

Amy Poehler Comments On Death Of ‘Parks & Rec’ Producer Harris Wittels

Amy Poehler was honored at Thursday night’s unite4:humanity gala for her work with Worldwide Orphans Foundation, but the “Parks and Recreation” star used the event to pay tribute to Harris Wittels. The 30-year-old “Parks and Rec” producer, writer and guest star died on Thursday at his home.

“Today, I lost a friend,” Poehler said. “I lost a dear young man in my life, who was struggling with addiction and who died. Just a few hours before we came. […] I’m sharing it with you because life and death live so close together and we walk that fine line every day. At the end of the day when things happen in our lives we turn to the people that we love and we look to our family and our community for support and we lean on people in a hope that they will ease our pain.”

Wittels had gone to rehab twice for drug addiction. He memorably talked about it during an episode of the Nerdist podcast “You Made It Weird.”

“I have done drugs recreationally since I was, like, 12,” Wittels said in the episode, which aired in November of last year. “The thing that happens with opiates is you get sick. You fucking go into withdrawals. So now it’s like I have to do drugs, or I’m not well.”

No cause of death has been determined for Wittels yet. According to the Los Angeles Times, an autopsy will likely be performed this weekend and results of any toxicology tests will not be known for more than six weeks.

Poehler wasn’t the only member of the “Parks and Recreation” team to comment Wittels’ death. Rob Lowe, who also appeared on the show, tweeted his condolences:

  • Joan Rivers Death Investigation Says Clinic Made Multiple Errors During Medical Procedure

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A New York City clinic where Joan Rivers suffered a fatal complication during a medical procedure made several errors, including failing to keep proper medication records and snapping cellphone photos of her while she was unconscious, state health investigators said Monday.

Rivers, who was 81, died Sept. 4. New York City’s medical examiner found she died of brain damage due to lack of oxygen after she stopped breathing during an endoscopy days earlier.

A report released by the state Department of Health on Monday cited Yorkville Endoscopy for numerous deficiencies related to the Rivers case, although negligence is not alleged. The comedian’s death was classified as a therapeutic complication.

As a result of the state investigation, the federal Department of Health and Human Services has given Yorkville Endoscopy until Jan. 7 to correct deficiencies to avoid losing Medicare accreditation.

In a statement to NBC News on Monday, Yorkville said it has submitted a plan to state and federal accreditation agencies addressing all issues raised. It said the physicians referenced in the report no longer provide services there.

The state report said the Manhattan clinic “failed to identify deteriorating vital signs and provide timely intervention” in Rivers’ case.

Investigators found conflicting information in Rivers’ medical records regarding the amount of the sedation drug Propofol she was administered and about the time resuscitation was initiated. They also faulted the clinic for allowing a surgeon who was not a member of the medical staff to perform two nose and throat scoping procedures.

Investigators also noted that a staff member took cellphone photos of Rivers and a surgeon while she was under anesthesia without her consent and in violation of the facility’s cellphone policy.

Rudy Giuliani, George Pataki And 2 Congressmen Plan Protest Of ‘The Death of Klinghoffer’ At Metropolitan Opera

NEW YORK (AP) — Some big-name politicians are joining Jewish protesters in a growing firestorm against an opera they say glorifies Palestinian terrorists.

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, former Gov. George Pataki and two U.S. congressmen are among hundreds expected outside the Metropolitan Opera on Monday to protest the Met premiere of “The Death of Klinghoffer.” It’s based on the 1985 murder of a disabled Jewish passenger, Leon Klinghoffer, on the Achille Lauro, an Italian cruise ship hijacked by four members of the Palestinian Liberation Front. The 69-year-old New York retiree was shot in his wheelchair and pushed overboard.

Organizers plan to bring 100 symbolic wheelchairs to the rally at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in Manhattan.

The Met already has canceled its planned November movie theater and radio broadcasts of American composer John Adams’ 1991 work amid pressure from Jewish groups — especially the Anti-Defamation League — whose members say the music romanticizes Klinghoffer’s killers, along with the opening “Chorus of Exiled Palestinians.”

Met General Manager Peter Gelb warned the broadcasts could trigger anti-Semitism overseas.

But opera expert Fred Plotkin says the work depicts the Klinghoffers as the moral backbone.

“Does this opera present the killers in a favorable light? No,” he says. “Are the Klinghoffers far and away the most sympathetic characters in the opera, the ones we care about most? I believe so.”

The opera has been a lightning rod since February, when it was first scheduled for this season.

The opposition is now reaching fever pitch, with word spreading that protesters may try to disrupt Monday’s performance.

It’s the second large New York demonstration against the work since the Met’s Sept. 22 season opening night, when protesters carried signs that read “Klinghoffer Opera/Propaganda Masquerading as Art” and jeered at arriving spectators.

Plotkin notes that many “Klinghoffer” opponents have never seen the work.

The Met is advertising it with the slogan: “See it. Then decide.”

“The Death of Klinghoffer” was first premiered in Brussels in 1991, with little controversy, then in various European cities as well as at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, where it was greeted with both praise and anger — especially from Klinghoffer’s two daughters.

“The Death of Klinghoffer” runs through Nov. 15 at the Met.

    Death Takes A Holiday

Ten days after attending the opening night of the California Shakespeare Theater’s new production of The Comedy of Errors I experienced a more personal comedy of errors that fell into that memorable category of “Everything’s all right now” stories.

I had planned to meet some friends from Sonoma for dinner. After making a reservation on Open Table (and sending them a copy of our reservation), I dutifully took a shower and headed across town to a favorite Indian restaurant.

There was just one problem. A software glitch had generated an email containing information about the wrong restaurant. As a result, I went to one place while my friends went to another.

When they arrived at a restaurant that was not the kind of place I would normally choose to eat (and I failed to show up), they tried to reach me by phone. Receiving no answer, they became worried and headed over to my apartment to check and see if I was all right. After further attempts to get me to answer the phone or come to the door, they decided to play it safe and called 911.

Both parties had left their respective restaurants at about 7:10 p.m. I, of course was fine. But, having just missed a #22 Fillmore bus, I took the long way around town, arriving at my corner on a #33 Ashbury bus.

As I was about to cross 18th Street, I noticed several police cars with flashing lights and a Fire Department’s emergency rescue vehicle parked in front of my apartment building. My friend Michael was standing in front, looking deeply concerned. As Texas Governor Rick Perry would say, “Oops.”

Once Michael informed the first responders that I was safe, we all breathed a sigh of relief and managed to sort out the details of which communications misfired and what else had gone wrong. We were, to say the very least, grateful for the things that went well (it never hurts to see a chorus of hunky men who look like beefcake calendar models in police uniforms exiting your building).

Thankfully, no one was hurt. The SFPD’s response time was magnificent; their officers exceptionally polite and professional. Nevertheless, it’s a little unnerving to step off the bus and get a preview of what things might look like on the day one dies.

The next day I received word that a very dear friend of mine from Rhode Island had passed away. As fate would have it, both she and her husband (who had expired 11 years prior) died on my birthday.

As part of the 2014 San Francisco Jewish Film Festival, I watched a series of shorts in which slightly disorganized Jewish families tried to deal with a set of comic circumstances surrounding the unexpected death of a loved one. As a culture, Jews seem to have a special affinity for dark humor.

Leon Prudovsky’s frenetic film, Welcome and Our Condolences, focuses on a family of Russian Jews who are flying to Israel to start a new life. It’s 1991 (the beginning of a huge exodus of Jewish immigrants from the Soviet Union to Israel) and 12-year-old Misha has been put in charge of the family’s home video camera as a way of keeping him busy and documenting their trip.

Gera (Gera Sandler) is a classic, absent-minded husband while his wife, Ola (Ola Schur Selektar), has been left in charge of luggage and documentation. Traveling with them is her elderly Aunt Rosa (Rosa Lifshitz) who dies in her sleep just as their plane is preparing to land at Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv.

    2014-08-05-condolences1.jpg

Aunt Rosa (Rosa Lifshitz) gets the celebrity treatment

As soon as they try to disembark, the family runs into a bureaucratic nightmare. If Aunt Rosa is dead on arrival, she can’t receive an Israeli immigration certificate. If she can’t be certified as a Jew, it will cost a lot more for Rosa’s body to enter the country.

Meanwhile, Gera and his wife are sweating to death because they arrived wearing three layers of winter clothes in order to avoid paying fees for excess baggage. Gera is getting sick from the free meatballs he ate in the airport while Misha happily continues to shoot a family film.

What Gera and Ola don’t know is that Aunt Rosa has been identified by the authorities as the 100,000th Jew to immigrate from Russia. Needless to say, the Israeli media is eager to celebrate her arrival in Tel Aviv.

Prudovsky’s short is filled with some wonderful character actors who help to make the Israeli immigration process an exercise in bureaucratic lunacy. Here’s the trailer:

Written by Benjamin Berman (and directed by Berman and Joshua Cohen), I’m A Mitzvah becomes a cross-cultural comedy of errors enhanced by the voice of Lainie Kazan as a panicky Jewish mother who won’t stop screaming over the phone that her dead son’s body has to be brought back to the United States so she can see him one last time.

It’s difficult enough for David to explain to a Mexican undertaker that, because Joel is Jewish, he can’t be embalmed. But when David finally gets Joel’s body into a makeshift coffin, he’s subject to further humiliations when his flight to the United States is cancelled. After renting a motel room, drinking a bottle of tequila, and reading the traditional mourner’s kaddish from the screen of his iPhone, the exhausted David sets out with Josh’s coffin to enjoy some local nightlife. Whether dancing with locals or cuddling with an attractive Mexican woman on a moonlit beach, complications ensue.

    Death Comes for Three

    Death Comes for Three

It was the social event of the year in the small subdivision called Enchanted Pecan Groves. Everybody attending this event had a great time. The Victorian theme party at the Cobblestones house would be remembered by all of the party goers for a long time. The party was given in an elaborate Victorian design with all the proper designs and props… The decorations were authentic and so were the costumes. A small Chamber orchestra filled the house with beautiful music from long ago. The food was delicious and ever one had a wonderful time. The party was not very big it was rather an exclusive affair, but never the less no expenses and/or effort was spared to make this event live on in every ones mind for years. The person of the day was the Cobblestones daughter Victoria it was her 9th birthday. Victoria adored the Victorian time and she asked her parents if she could live one day just as if it was the year 1840. Being an only child and of course spoiled and loved by her parents the little girl got her wish. The date of the party was August the 13th a Friday, and the heat had soared all day long; it was the hottest most humid month of August any one could remember. But that didn’t take any ones excitement for this party away. Victorian costumes had been ordered and especially the women had quite a bit of clothing to wear. The air conditioning units were working overtime to keep all party guests comfortable. Oh what an elaborate affair it was, family and friends commented that this was the absolute best time they ever had together. Hundred’s of pictures were taken to remember every detail, without a doubt this party would be remembered forever. No one in attendance knew why though; because what they didn’t know was the fact- that Evil was at the party. Death came to the party to claim three lives after the party was over. It was midnight when the gruesome affair was discovered by a neighbor. The neighbor called the police and they began an intensive investigatio

What Awesome Conservative Cartoon Death Is America Missing out On?

This week’s poll from the Lester & Charlie Institute of Forward Thinking!

Conservatives are always outraged about something. A few weeks ago, we told you about the right-wing umbrage being tossed around — not because of Obamacare — but because of good old comic books. Well, for the conservative Comic-Con set, it’s getting worse.

Conservative comic book writers have already complained that illustrated heroes have become too complicated. Superman is “less patriotic.” Batman is too “dark and ambiguous.” Moral relativism is ruining our cherished American medium, and the real villains are those crazy liberals conspiring to keep conservative cartoonists from telling their wholesome stories!

There’s only so much that conservative comic fans can stand before they corner the market on Kryptonite and hold the world hostage, they cried!

All this yammer was before Marvel Comics thwakked conservatives this week with a double-whammy. First, we learned that the hammer-wielding Marvel character Thor will be reintroduced to readers as a woman. And the new Captain America will be black! Holy agenda, Batman!

This might have been enough to send these folks over the cliff. But then we read some incredible news, this time from Archie Comics: Archie Andrews, beloved white-bread icon since 1941, will be killed off in a storyline that has him taking a bullet for a gay gun-control advocate.

Yes, you read that right. “Life With Archie,” a progressive Archie Comics spin-off that imagines Archie, Betty, Veronica and Jughead as adults dealing with cancer and money troubles, first made news when it introduced an openly gay character, Kevin Keller. Keller is portrayed as a military veteran turned U.S. Senator who later went on to get gay married and take a firm stance in favor of gun control.

And now there’s this: The four-year-old spin-off series will conclude when Archie gets in between the gay gun-control Senator Keller and his would-be assassin.

If conservative comic book fans were sock-hopping mad before, this news is going to have them lining up at the Acme Corporation for a stockpile of instant holes and dynamite plungers.

Speaking of dynamite plungers, comic book characters do die. Jimmy Olsen, Lex Luther and even Hercules are pushing up daises along with hundreds of others.

So, back to those conservative writers who are complaining that comic book publishers don’t let them tell their stories. Are they of the opinion that everything should always stay the same, thank you very much, and let’s stop messing with things? Or would they take the side of killing off cherished characters?

We’d like to think these writers would rise to the challenge. No good writer, conservative or not, could forever resist the opportunity for a bold story move — even if that meant killing off an important character.

But how would they do it? If Archie Andrews is taking a bullet for homosexuals and gun-control advocates, how would these conservative writers put their spin on the inevitable death of a cherished character? And, more important, who would they kill? And how would they do it? Tell us what YOU think!

The Death of Meriwether Lewis: A Historic Crime Scene Investigation

The Death of Meriwether Lewis: A Historic Crime Scene Investigation

Even after more than two centuries, mystery continues to surround Meriwether Lewis’s death—did the famous explorer commit suicide or was he murdered? Recently revealed truths and deconstructed myths are woven together in this fascinating account to form an unforgettable tale of political corruption, assassins, forged documents, and skeletal remains. New research implicating General James Wilkinson—commanding general of the U.S. Army and coconspirator of Aaron Burr—as the assassin is thoroughly discussed, while riveting testimony from 13 leading experts in wound ballistics, forensic anthropology, suicide psychology, grave-site exhumation, and handwriting analysis offers new insight into what Lewis’s exhumed remains might reveal. The new evidence not only destroys the foundation of suicide arguments by proving the primary evidence is a forgery, it also proves the Indian Agent escorting Lewis lied about his activities on the day of Lewis’s death. The book also contains evidence of a previously unknown plot by Aaron Burr to seize New Orleans and invade Mexico in 1809, a repeat of his 1806 plot. It explains why Lewis suddenly changed his plans to travel to Washington, DC, by boat, and instead chose to go overland on the Natchez Trace, where he met his untimely death on October 11, 1809, at age 35.

Expect Plenty Of Death In The Season Finale of ‘Reign’

Prepare yourselves, Royals, more death is coming to French court.

This season on “Reign” there’ve been beheadings, battles and bedding ceremonies, but tonight’s final episode is upping the stakes for some of your favorite characters on the show. Adelaide Kane — who plays fledgling monarch Mary, Queen of Scots — spilled a few finale secrets to HuffPost TV, explaining that she’s very different from the character she plays:

Fans should be ready for a few things before tonight’s season finale airs.
Last week’s episode saw King Henry finally go full on crazy and Mary team up with Catherine to plan his imminent demise. Things didn’t work out too well for the scheming Queens and on tonight’s episode, Francis finds himself in danger and Mary might be his only hope. So what’s in store for our newlyweds?

“A couple of loose ends are going to be tied up,” Kane said. “We’re going to resolve some of the open plot threads.” And how does the show plan on doing that? Murder, of course. “There’s going to be some death, as there is in every episode,” she admitted. “Just a casual Thursday in the castle.”

But will Mary, who hasn’t been afraid to get her hands bloody this season, be involved in the action? Kane certainly hopes so. “I’d love to see her just stab somebody!” the actress joked.

Seriously though, fans should prepare for plenty of pomp and circumstance before the show says goodbye. A festival will be taking place, some jousting and oh yeah, a baby will be born. “Lola goes into labor,” Kane revealed. “But there’s no baby in the finale so you’re going to have to wait until the second season to find out about that.”

Don’t bother to ask Kane what fans can expect in Season 2.
“They don’t tell me anything,” the actress said. “I’ve been asking everybody. I have my little spy network that I bribe with baked goods and hugs, but it never works.”

One thing that does work on the show: the clothes.
Apparently, dressing the part of the queen has its perks. Since the pilot episode, critics and fans alike have agreed on one thing and that’s how damn good the cast looks while tromping all over the French castle. While we’re sure their good genes are to blame, it doesn’t hurt that Kane and company have had their choice of designer duds every episode. From Alexander McQueen ball gowns to Gucci mesh tops and everything in between, the costume department on the show deserves a round of applause for the all the hard work they do, and Kane agrees.

“I don’t even bother giving input,” Kane said. “They don’t ask me and they don’t need to. They know exactly what they’re doing.” And while donning couture sounds fun, Kane admits it’s one of the hardest parts of the job. “It’s very exciting but at the end of a 16 hour day, I want to rip them to shreds, douse them in gas and burn them,” the actress said. “You trip over your damn self all the time and going to the bathroom is so tricky.”

Since the show is taking a temporary leave of absence, Kane waxed nostalgic on the first season by revealing which scene was her favorite to film.
“I love anything with Megan (Follows) and anything with Toby (Regbo),” Kane said. “I love our fight scenes where we get to scream at each other. It’s very cathartic.”

Mary has no problem standing up for herself on the show, but Kane isn’t anything like her royal alter ego.
On the show, Kane totally embodies her strong and often stubborn character, but the actress want her fans to know, there’s a difference between who she plays on TV and who she is when the cameras aren’t rolling.

“I hate conflict,” Kane said. “I don’t like fighting people.” Thankfully, back-stabbings and assassination attempts are something the Australian actress doesn’t have to deal with in her personal life, but she says it’s always better to take the high road in any argument. “I’ve had my fair share of bullshit to deal with,” Kane said. “It’s always better to take the upper hand.”

The season finale of “Reign” airs Thursday, May 15, at 9 p.m. EDT on The CW.

    Silence Not Equal to Death

3 days of silence. 2 times a year.

Silence allows me to see myself, separate from my agendas.

For the last 15 years, I have spent 3 days, twice a year, on a silent retreat at a monastery 50 miles north of Boston. It has taught me how to listen to myself and, in doing so, I hear others better.

Between a stress-filled job and the full-time home care of my elderly parents for the last 5 years, silence has become a luxury. The monastery allows me to drop my agendas at the door and slow my mind and body down. Learning to drop my agendas did not come easily. But once I did, it opened up the door to really seeing the leaves on the tress, the markings of falling snow, the remains of a bird I heard being attacked the night before. Just the claws and leg were on the ground, and in the claws was an unbroken egg. Along with the amazing opportunity to see and hear the mundane and the unusual around me, silence moves me back to discernment as a way of being. The singing of hymns 4 times a day and eating meals together in silence with total strangers is liberating and communing in fundamental ways. Most of all I get the very best sleep when I am at the monastery. Sad, that good sleep and the ability to hear a bird’s sound or my own voice is a luxury in our world today. For a dose of stillness, I go to a monastery 2 times a year.

8 deaths. 2 more to go.

Death still remains a mystery but I am no longer afraid of it.

I was 25 and less than 3 years in the US when I buried, from AIDS, my first lover in 1985. John was 54. I was deep in the closet. At 30, my next partner Bob, 60, who ran 5 miles 3 times a week, died of a heart attack in my arms as I gave him CPR. I had just learned it 2 weeks prior, but it did not work. Then there was Lucho, my AIDS Action buddy, who was the ultimate practitioner of detachment as the means to a peaceful end. He kept his mother and family away so he could die without emotions interfering with “the process of dying.” Then Tom, my current 81-year-old partner James’s nephew, both of AIDS in 1992. Lloyd and Francis and Joe. Oh yes. Walter. Walter, who was a recluse who had no relatives or friends, lived in our basement with all his windows boarded up. I mean no family and no daylight. None! He told me I needed to slow down and not move so fast. He had no possessions but had stored 20 years of New York Times crossword puzzles he had done in ink. No mistakes. Would not see a doctor and would only allow me to take care of his oozing, gangrened leg. I cleaned and bandaged it for a year. Bought him his $ 5 worth of groceries and $ 5 of cigarettes each week for 2 years. And James and I gave him morphine at the end. He said he wanted to be put out with the trash. We were the only two people at his funeral.

Fast forward. I just buried my father a year ago. Ah! What a satisfying experience. He lived a full life. He and I butted heads when I was young and he became my close friend at the end. He kept telling me in his last year how sad that I was all alone. I still am not sure what he meant. I took care of him and he cared for me. He told me I needed to be more gentle with him. He died at home at 92. He got up from his bed and walked to bed and he died. Br. Curtis from the monastery did the funeral service. And now there is my once super-active mother in a wheelchair at 89, showing early signs dementia and still finding meaning in her diminished state knitting blankets for a children’s hospital. She is looking forward to meeting up with my father. And she tells me he comes and visits her often. Sometimes with a gentle hand on her shoulder. She hates what has become of her life, confined to a wheelchair with her mind and body failing her by the day. This week she asked me if there was “mercy killing” in this country. I just checked out a small hospice nearby.

Silence has allowed me to be present to death. Allowing death to be present in my life, gives me the perspective to be mindful of the present.

    Death of a Salaryman

    Death of a Salaryman

Wonderfully surreal, painfully real, this is the story of a Japanese salaryman who loses his job at a TV corporation, on his 40th birthday, and slips through to a different layer of society, a shadowy world where curious characters show him the way – a travelling salesman with a passion for Elvis, a pachinko pro with dreams of returning to Hawaii, and a TV producer who will stop at nothing to get his big break – and Kenji sets off on a roller-coaster ride of misadventures. He tries to make money from the pachinko machines – and succeeds – but his conventional, snobbish hardworking wife finds this demeaning. He has a hated mother-in-law who’s a genius at winning magazine competitions and knows the wife of a bank manager. So our hero ends up instead in the postroom of a huge bank… With a little help from his friends, he makes his way out and via a bizarre chain of happenstance (including being struck by lightning while wielding a golf club) finds himself responsible for a TV reality game show so weirdly believable that some crazed tv executive may well be pitching it now. Against all odds, the salaryman dies – to be reborn as a human being.Fresh, original and funny without signalling its humour, this astonishing debut novel brilliantly captures the fast-changing culture of Japan (where the author lived and worked for a brief period) and its surreal underside in an engaging portrait of an ordinary man battling with the contradictory demands of contemporary life.

Lea Michele Reveals Kate Hudson Helped Her Heal After Cory Monteith’s Death

Lea Michele is opening up about her boyfriend Cory Monteith’s death in the new issue of Elle magazine.

The “Glee” star, 27, covers the December issue and reveals that her co-star Kate Hudson took her in and helped her cope with Monteith’s death. Michele admits that Hudson was one of the first people she called upon hearing the tragic news, explaining, “I called her and said, ‘I don’t know where I’m going to go because my house is swarmed [with reporters].’ She was like, ‘Oh, you’re going to stay at my house.’ Like it was nothing.”

And Hudson didn’t just open her doors to Michele.

“She let my family stay there, and any of my friends. She made sure that in the refrigerator were my favorite juices,” Michele tells Elle. “I’ll never really be able to thank her, truly, for what she did for me.”

Monteith died in July at the age of 31 from a “mixed drug toxicity” consisting of heroin and alcohol and Michele has been slowly adjusting to a life without him ever since.

“It’s very hard,” she admits, continuing, “You have to be very strong to come out of this alive, but I think by doing the best for myself, by showing that you don’t have to lose yourself, maybe someone else will feel some sort of strength or comfort.”

In the interview, Michele also admits that she and Monteith began dating during the first season of “Glee,” but that “no one really caught on.” In early 2012, they made it official: “‘You wanna do this?'” Michele recalled them asking themselves. “We knew.”

“I know that Cory would want nothing more than for me to take this situation and use it to help people,” Michele adds, “I don’t know if I will. I don’t know how.”
