The Hearthstone Team Gave Us Five Decks to Try on Day One of Ashes of Outland

The Year of the Phoenix is about to begin on April 7 in NA (April 8 in ANZ) in Hearthstone, ushering in a new expansion – Ashes of Outland, and a whole new class – Demon Hunter. The Hearthstone team is giving everyone 30 Demon Hunter cards to get them started, while new and returning players also get to choose a free deck in the class of their choice. Not only that, but card packs will no longer contain duplicates at any rarity – until you have a complete collection for that expansion at that rarity, of course.

It will be a great time to play Hearthstone, in other words, and to help you get up to speed, we asked Senior Game Designer on the Hearthstone team, Chadd Nervig, to give us a handful of decks for people to try on day one. These aren’t meant to be tier 1 decks, but reasonably competitive options to get you started. Let’s run through them.

Demon Hunter – Glaives of Fury

Chadd Nervig, Senior Game Designer: “It focuses on attacking synergies… such as early game plays like Battlefiend and Furious Felfin. Umberwing is also a really strong card, letting you get an attack in on two turns.

“Since this is a pretty aggressive deck, it uses Kayn Sunfury as a finisher a lot of the time, and/or Maiev to get around a big taunt. Glaivebound Adept is just really strong for all-round stats and damage, for both going over taunts and just being a big body. You’d probably think of Imprisoned Antaen as a ‘Big Demon’ card, but it has a pretty significant ability to close out a game with its damage… Metamorphosis is also an ‘over two turns Pyroblast’ so you can close out games.

Skull of Gul’dan is one of our few sources of card draw in this deck. It’s a pretty strong card draw tool, and the Outcast effect of it is pretty reliably castable in this deck… everything is pretty cheap. And because we’re attacking a bunch, [we include] Warglaives of Azzinoth.”

Deck code:

AAECAea5AwTMugPDvAPtvgPaxgMN+a4Di7oDyboDo7sD17sDxLwD4LwDjb0DusYD2cYD98gD/sgD/8gDAA==

(Copy this code to your clipboard and create a new deck in Hearthstone.)

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=glaives-of-fury-deck-list-and-key-cards&captions=true”]

Demon Hunter – Illidari Souls

Chadd Nervig, Senior Game Designer: “We’ve called this Illidari Souls because the primary token it’s using is Illidari Initiates that are summoned by Coordinated Strike or Command the Illidari. The main theme here is using tokens to generate power when they die, through things like Feast of Souls or Wrathscale Naga. Because we’re going to be summoning a bunch of tokens, we’ve also got Knife Jugglers in there.

“There’s a bunch of recurring themes here like Warglaives of Azzinoth, [which] is just a pretty good board clear, Metamorphosis can help close out games and Glaivebound Adept is pretty strong. But then Nethrandamus comes in to help be a big elbow drop sort of card…

“Illidari Souls is more of a combo deck – these big swing turns where you play a Coordinated Strike or even a Command the Illidari and use those to kill something off while you’ve got a Knife Juggler out and then Feast of Souls afterwards.”

Deck code:

AAECAea5AwbMugPDvAPEvAPtvgO8xgPaxgMMsQjKqwOLugOjuwPYuwOJvAOpvAPgvAO6xgP5yAP+yAO+0gMA

(Copy this code to your clipboard and create a new deck in Hearthstone.)

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=illidari-souls-deck-list-and-key-cards&captions=true”]

Demon Hunter – Demon Crushers

Chadd Nervig, Senior Game Designer: “This is the deck if you like big demons. The early game mostly revolves around stuff like AOE, discover, the lifesteal weapon, Eye Beam – ways to hold on, play defensively until we can start cranking out our big bombs. [The mid-range minions also help] get through to that period – defensively statted, with lifesteal and taunt, and explicitly not demons, because we want our demon synergies to be saved up for the stuff at the bottom [of the deck list]. Not all of our big things are demons – Coilfang Warlord’s not. You’ll just play him on curve. Take something big out with it and end up with a threatening taunt on the board.

“You’ve got Chaos Nova and Immolation Aura in here to act as AOE, Warglaives [of Azzinoth] is kind of a pseudo AOE. The big demons start coming in with the Raging Felscreamer – you can play that on four and then a Priestess of Fury on five, that’s a great combo. Then Fel Summoner on six. It’s only got three health so you can probably find some way to make it die the next turn. And then having that pull out hopefully a Pit Commander or a Hulking Overfiend or a Priestess of Fury – get some big bombs going. You effectively have eight biggish demons in the deck – the Priestesses of Fury, the Hulking Overfiends, the Pit Commanders and whatever you discover off of Netherwalker.”

Deck code:

AAECAea5AwTDvAPEvAPtvgPUyAMNh7oDvbsDnLwDmb0D5r4D98MDx8YDg8cDhMcD18gD2NMD3dMD+NYDAA==

(Copy this code to your clipboard and create a new deck in Hearthstone.)

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=demon-crushers-deck-list-and-key-cards&captions=true”]

Mage – Spells are SO Fun!

Chadd Nervig, Senior Game Designer: “This is a deck that uses all spells. There are a couple of power cards in here that are specifically tied to that archetype – Font of Power to get you some minions: one mana to get three random Mage minions is pretty good. Apexis Blast is also quite good for this. It’s kind of like an old Firelands Portal, but for two less mana… and because our deck is all spells, Incanter’s Flow is of great value to us.

“We’ve got a couple of secrets in here, just Flame Ward and Netherwind Portal, so we’re running Ancient Mysteries as a way to draw those and make them free. We’ve got mostly mid-range-y cost spells here other than a couple of our freeze tools to hold onto the board.

“We’ve got the sidequest to get some big minions off all our spells, and whenever we don’t have a good play, or whenever we run out of steam, Evocation will fill us back up. Evocation’s pretty interesting in that – assuming you have a reasonable amount of space in your hand –  you can kind of use it as a ‘I want to go off and do a ton of things all at once’ or you can use it as ‘I don’t have a good play, it’s turn seven, he’s got a board and I don’t have any good play, I’ll just Evocation, get six cards to look at and one or two of them will probably be a pretty reasonable use of my mana,’ so it can sort of fill in any hole.”

Deck code:

AAECAf0EAr+kA8W4Aw67AskDqwTLBJYFn5sD/50D9KsD8a8DwbgDwrgDjLkDgb8D3sQDAA==

(Copy this code to your clipboard and create a new deck in Hearthstone.)

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=spells-are-so-fun-deck-list-and-key-cards&captions=true”]

Priest – Buff ‘em Up!

Chadd Nervig, Senior Game Designer: “This is a Priest deck using some of the new cards in Ashes of Outland, and also some of the new Basic and Classic Priest cards… we’ve got Kul Tiran Chaplain, just reasonable stats [with a bonus]. We want Priest to be able to hold the board with high health minions and then heal them back up. We’ve also got some improved removal tools for control for Priest, such as Holy Smite and Shadow Word: Ruin – that’s the new AOE to destroy all the big things on the board – we like Priest being good at conditional removal.

“In terms of Ashes of Outland-specific cards, there’s a theme going on for Priest in Ashes for buffs, so we’ve got some cards like Sethekk Veilweaver – this is just a good tool in a buff deck. After you cast a spell on a minion – probably a buff, but it also works on removal cards like Holy Smite, we get to refill with more spells… this can chain quite a bit. Apotheosis is just a great buff – makes something bigger, gives it lifesteal. And Psyche Split is a really big buff, or rather, a small buff and then a copy. If you can have something stick… and then Apotheosis it and Psyche Split it on turn eight… that’s pretty reasonable. Dragonmaw Overseer is another good example of them fighting for board – good stats on the board… and then there’s a little resurrect in here – a lot of these cards work well with Psychopomp.”

Forty Five Ten to Open The Row Shop-in-Shop

Forty Five Ten’s Dallas flagship will on Tuesday open The Row’s first store-in-store, the only one of its kind in Dallas.
“Over the past year, it became clear — because of demand and our belief in the collection — that it was time to devote a space to creating the full world of The Row,” said Kristen Cole, president and chief creative officer of Forty Five Ten.
“I love The Row’s minimalist approach to luxury. It has such an identifiable aesthetic (its L.A. store is one of my all-time favorites), and I knew their team would design a beautiful space,” Cole added.
Located on the second level, the new 340-square-foot shop’s design was created exclusively for Forty Five Ten, and will carry the women’s ready-to-wear, men’s and accessories collections.
It is Forty Five Ten’s only shop-in-shop.
A muted color palette plays off a rich mix of textures. The room’s showpiece is a vintage Fritz Hansen teddy fur sofa from the Forties. Custom drapes made in Italy by Loro Piana cover the room’s floor-to-ceiling window with Juliette balcony. The space includes midcentury furniture designed by Frank Lloyd Wright sourced from local galleries.

The “People Power” Internet Business Superbook Five Books on Making Money Online

The “People Power” Internet Business Superbook Five Books on Making Money Online

The five books on making money online are as follows: Book 1. Business Website, Collect Money, Send Things Book 2. Internet Selling (Sell on Your Website & on the Big Internet Stores) Book 3. Online Classified Ads Book 4. Internet Marketing, Website Optimization (Get Visitors to Your Website) Book 5. Computer-Internet Jobs-Business E-commerce lowers the cost of transmitting information and makes it accessible to everywhere on the planet in under a second. That’s great but that’s all it is, a faster, more accessible means to do business. If your product is not very good and you have problems running your business, e-commerce will not magically make you rich. Many players tried to make money from the internet itself like ebay, amazon, google, etc. but most failed. Many retail internet websites failed but some fared alright, the ones that had a niche market where the products they sold could be easily shipped by a delivery company and already established companies who merely put out a website to enhance their existing business. The major disadvantages of internet sales are as follows: Some things are meant to be sold in person like clothing, a car, flowers, etc. Some things are simply not condusive to being shipped because it costs too much like dog food, garden tools, etc. Customers are picky about some things, they complain a lot and there’s room for fraud. Consider vitamins. There are fakes and cheap knock-offs. If you buy a bottle at your local health food store, you feel safer than buying a bottle over the internet. The shipping costs make some things not amenable to being sold over the internet like small, inexpensive things where the cost of shipping is as much as the product itself. Anything that’s perishable can’t be sold. A big part of buying is impulse. You see something at the mall and buy it. Some products have to be inspected. You can’t get a feel for them over the internet. Some products don’t have enough buyers to justify a websit

Five Easy Summer Work Outfits for Every Day of the Week

If you find the act of getting dressed for work during the summer to be the worst, allow us to be of service. We’ve put together five fail-safe summer outfit idea formulas that you can use for everyday of the week. Thanks to these stylish ladies, you’ll no longer have to stand in front of your closet wondering just what the heck you’re going to wear to the office.

work-outfit-formula-belted-shirt-dress-wedges-1Monday: A button-down dress + skinny belt + wedges. You’re most likely in #strugglemode on the first day of the week, so make getting dressed for the office as easy as possible. Go with a button-down shirt dress cinched at the waist and heels that aren’t too high.

work-outfit-formula-TJ-shorts-blazer-blouseTuesday: A blazer + tailored shorts + pumps. By this time you’ve shaken off the sleepy vibes of Monday and have your style sea legs under you. Put together an outfit that says, “I actually tried,” like a blazer, frilly blouse, a pair of tailored shorts, and sharp pumps.

work-outfit-ideas-formula-TJ-jane-keltner-de-valle2Wednesday: A silk blouse + A-line skirt + ankle-strap sandals. Celebrate Hump Day (and the beginning of the end of the week) in an outfit that looks like it took way longer to put together than it actually did. Might we suggest a silky blouse, a structured skirt, and ankle-strap sandals.

work-outfit-formula-t-shirt-dressy-a-line-skirt2Thursday: A T-shirt + knee-length skirt. Get away with wearing a T-shirt at the office with the help of a fancy knee-length skirt. Now you’re dressed for both a meeting with the boss and happy hour drinks with friends.

work-outfit-idea-formula-TJ-culottes-cropped-summer-sweater2Friday: Culottes + a crop top + heels. You’ve made it! The end of the week calls for comfort—culottes and a cropped summer sweater should do the trick. Add heels for an after-work dinner and drinks date with your love.

Three Days in an Ashram, Five Lessons Learned

It was a Thursday morning, and I just finished a different kind of meditation. As most of my startup friends know, I am a huge meditation buff, and try my best to do it religiously every morning.

I was logging into my email to tackle the 100s of emails I get daily, and do some mundane work regarding legal, accounting, etc. that all startup founders have to go through.

But, for some reason, I felt a strong urge to take the next train/flight to New Jersey to spend time with Kamlesh Patel (my guru and spiritual global leader) at the Natural Path (Sahaj Marg) Ashram in New Jersey.

Without thinking twice, I jumped on the next Amtrak train for New Jersey. On the train, I finished a finishing a business pitch, tackle three phone calls, and tried my best to get in the right mindset and develop the correct frame of mind before my stay in the Ashram. Trust me, this is a HUGE leap from three years ago when I would resist to step foot.

Being through a transformative three days, here are five lessons I learned:

Lesson #1: Trust your heart — not your head

Luckily after starting meditation, I have opportunities to get some major introspection time before and after sessions in the morning and evening, especially in the ashram. Most people know me as being extremely blunt, to the point, and also having straightforward thinking, but it wasn’t always like that.

Especially if you are managing people, you have to make decisions fast. I have learned after two years that if something keeps coming in my head and bothering me from my day-to-day work, I will sit down in meditation for some time, and see what my heart tells me. 100% of the time, I have never regret it.

Try it now — is something on your mind? Sit down and meditate on it.

Lesson#2: Blood relations are meaningless — love all

When I reached the New Jersey Amtrak station, a family lovingly picked me up from the station greeted me. The best part about this — none of them were “Kulkarni’s” or had any blood relation to me, yet, still drove me one and a half hours away from the station to their home where they fed me and allowed me a place to call mine for the night.

I find myself confused when I hear “I need to spend time with my family.” My thought process is the concept of family should not just stem from your immediate blood family, but everyone human being that you encounter. We have a responsibility to look out for one another, and this was clearly demonstrated in this encounter.

An easy way to do this, call every single person your brother and sister. It may sound weird, but this forced action will later develop in you naturally loving and looking other for the other person. I do it all the time.

Lesson #3: Don’t brood over problems — negate them from your system

Being a startup entrepreneur, you have to make decisions fast. My good friend and spiritual follower Rajesh Setty once told me “If I am sleeping at night, and I cannot sleep, I get up and tell myself that I will never do whatever is keeping me up again.”

This exact situation happened to me when we hired an intern at Insightfully. The intern was doing work, but we weren’t including them in our meetings or discussions. Instead of constantly thinking about the problem and negating it, I ended up negating it from my system, and solving it in the process by resolving this with our co-founders and coming with the next steps road map.

Lesson #4: Balance aspects of life

I had a discussion with my sister, Sonia Dovedy, a successful yoga teacher and wellness coach. Sonia was talking to me about the interlinking of spiritual, material, and health when it comes to success to human beings.

As startup founders, I realized that we do a fantastic job working 15-17 hours a day, but do a terrible job balancing our lives in the aspects that play a fundamental roll in efficiency. For example, if are an overweight founder, try losing some of the weight, start meditating, and then tell me how much more success you have. There is a reason why we need balance for long-term success.

Lesson #5: Just chill

Dating back to when I was starting a course regarding finance, I was extremely concerned with being able to keep up. In the Ashram, I will never forget my sister Kamini Khanjee telling me to “stop worrying about things that aren’t in your control.”

It is hard to fathom at first, but It’s so true! How many of us are constantly “worried about getting enough sales”, or “if hiring someone will impact our business”. The list goes on and on. Learn to do what you do best, and enjoy the ride.

Khloe Kardashian Blasts Liposuction Rumors, Says ‘I Bust My Ass’ In The Gym Five Days A Week

If you follow Khloe Kardashian on Instagram, you know she spends a lot of time in the gym. The 30-year-old is seriously proud of all the hard work that has gone into her body transformation, which is why you can’t blame the woman for being sick and tired of rumors saying she cut corners to get her fab figure.

On Tuesday, Kardashian took to Twitter to blast haters spreading rumors that she’d gotten liposuction.

Back in February, Kardashian celebrated the emergence of what she called her “baby abs” and wrote about her ongoing relationship with the gym:

My fitness journey will be a life long journey. Fitness is not about being better than someone else. It’s about being better than you used to be. I’m not where I want to be and who knows if I ever will be,”she wrote. But I am healthier than ever and due to my consistent workouts, I am slowly seeing results. Hi baby abs !! I see you!!! I hope to meet your other ab friends soon (yes I’m talking to my muscles. I’ve never met most of them before).

Looking back at pictures of myself I didn’t realize at the time how unhealthy my lifestyle actually was. People love to call me the fat one but as weird as it sounds I still don’t think I would consider myself fat back then. Definitely overweight and unhealthy, yes. About two years ago I decided to turn to fitness as a form of therapy and as a stress reliever. I started slow and eventually I started working out 4 to 5 days a week. We all have to start somewhere and doing something is better than nothing at all. Start small so you don’t get discouraged and give up. Remember it is all about consistency. There are no quick fixes if you want long-term results. Working out is a huge part of my life now. I genuinely enjoy sweating out my frustrations and living a healthier life. My workouts are not all about vanity. They are about clarity for my mind and soul. We all have different journeys in life, make sure your journey is for you and you alone. Remember in the end the turtle won the race. Slow and steady. dedication and tenacity.

Reflections on Five Years of Blogging on HuffPost Arts & Culture

The past few weeks have been busy, so an important career milestone almost slipped by with my having noticed: May 13th was my “Five Year Blogaversary.” On that date in 2010 my first blog appeared on The Huffington Post. Titled “Picasso’s Recession-Proof Harem,” it appeared on HuffPost’s New York section, as the Arts page hadn’t opened yet. HuffPost Arts — now HuffPost Arts & Culture — officially opened a month later, on June 15, 2010, under the direction of its amazing founding editor, artist Kimberly Brooks.

“Picasso’s Recession-Proof Harem” was the first of a total of 259 blogs (this one included) that I have posted over a five-year span. That means I have averaged just under a blog a week over time. When I started, I had absolutely no idea that I was capable of writing so much or so often. Blogging has been a huge surprise for me: It has been a life-transforming experience and a door-opener.

Ex-voto painting by Matthew Couper

Matthew Couper’s wonderful ex-voto painting, sent to me as a gift early in 2011, does a great job of capturing the spirit world of my newfound avocation. Seated productively at my computer, I’m connected by a grid of red circuitry to Mat Gleason — another early HuffPost Arts blogger — and also to an all-seeing eye, and to a painting by my mentor, the late Nathan Oliveira. A head by Jean-Michel Basquiat — another art world frenemy — rises over the floor tiles to my left, while my journalistic patron saintess, Arianna Huffington, raises a knowing eyebrow to my right. Christ, crucified for art, adds an additional touch of religiosity and devotion to the tableau.

2015-05-24-1432488890-3941616-John_office.JPG

At work in my office

Matthew’s painting captures some of the imaginative and psychological forces that surround my interest in writing. A photo of me at work in my real office shows some interesting correspondences. I do spend a great deal of time leaning over my laptop, and a work by Nathan Oliveira — one of his “Tauromaquia” monotypes — does hang in front of me as I write. A large model plane that I built and put too much work into to actually fly hangs over my head, a reminder of a hobby of the past. The energy that I used to put into making things seems to all go into writing these days. After recently re-organizing a bookshelf in my office to contain all of the catalogs and books I have contributed to over the past few years, all the effort suddenly seemed tangible.

Art catalogs and books

The following list contains some reflections, notes and comments from five years of blogging:

A few things I have learned:

Every word matters. You never know who is reading your blog. Every blog is important.

My favorite quote from an artist:

“The bravest thing in the world is to take a position without a pre-planned fall back.”

– Kyle Staver quoted in “A Brother Honored”

My favorite reader comment:

“Read it. Excellent. Loved the Mao.”

Steve Martin responding to my blog “I Don’t Deconstruct” on Twitter.

Blogging is different from other kinds of writing:

You wake up in the morning, drink your coffee, and blog about what you want to write about in the way that you want to.

Blogging is truly social:

I have never had so many friends. Oh, and a few frenemies too…

Something I need to do again:

The “Paintings and Palettes” and “Studio Visit” blogs were a lot of work, but a lot of fun too.

A common misconception.

I have written predominantly about representational painters. For that reason, some people have come to think that I don’t care for other types of art. That isn’t true. I write about representational painting because there is simply so much good work out there that hasn’t gotten the attention that it deserves.

Humor is important:

You can say things with humor that you can’t say another other way. A list of my satires can be found at this link.

I’m often asked if I have a favorite artist:

Yes, it is the artist I am writing about at any given moment.

Artists need to have their stories told:

Interviewing artists has allowed me let artists tell their stories. An index of the 75 interviews I have conducted since 2010 can be found on my personal website.

http://www.johnseed.com/p/interviews.html

Some Acknowledgements:

I owe a great deal of thanks to Arianna Huffington, Kimberly Brooks, Kathleen Massara and Katherine Brooks (my editors). I owe even more to my wife Linda who has supported me, even when I have been writing when there is laundry that needs folding.

To my readers:

Thank you for reading. There is a lot left to write… more blogs are on the way.

How to Let Go of Your Fears in Five Steps

Why is it so difficult to let go of our fears? How much easier life would be if we dared to go ahead and we would not worry about everything. You should let go of your fears, not stick to them. It is difficult to know what belongs to you, as you often do not even realize that you have adopted something, and at the same time you consider things as your reality which have nothing to do with reality. Notice what does not belong to you, that is holding you back and eliminate it from your life; do not let it slow you down. The following tasks help me each and every time I would like to conquer my fears.

2015-05-22-1432278557-5326336-Kpernyfot201505229.12.52.png

1. Write down your fears

If you have the courage to write them down, you are halfway there. Lot of fears are eating us from the inside, and we are so used to them that we don’t even realize they exist. They are hidden in our words and in our beliefs. We have made them part of our lives, but remember: you shouldn’t stick to your fears, you should let them go.

2. Go into details

Write down the main areas of your life and make lists of your blockages. This task will help you dig even deeper into your fears. I know, you still say that this task is not for you, but if you follow the five steps, you will soon realize it is only your ego tricking you. From your job to you career and to your relationships, take a look at the things that might hold you back. Think of the reasons why you are not taking certain steps.

Don’t forget:
your circumstances keep changing all the time, don’t camp in the past. Just because something could not happen last year, it might happen this year.

3. Analyze

Now that you have a list of your fears, deal with them one by one. Why are you afraid of it? Because if you don’t succeed, it’s a failure? Why are you afraid of failure? What kind of image do you have of failure? How were you treated in the past when you failed?

The attitude and the experience you associate with the specific events are important. If in your case it is negative, you only have to change that. The following stories will help you with that.

I know people who have been competing a lot since they were kids, and when they didn’t win, their parents praised them anyhow and told them that it was also a part of the journey. If you want to be very good, you have to make a lot of mistakes; it is only the cowards that don’t try. It is a myth that you are good only if you do everything perfectly. I think it works this way: you accept that you make mistakes, but you learn, because you WANT to grow.

The second story: a boy told me once that when he accidentally broke a glass as a child, his mother would start to scream her lungs out and say “how clumsy you are, son!” All through his childhood, this boy convinced himself that he is clumsy, because his mother said so, and he has been afraid he might break a glass ever since. Is it a realistic fear? No. Nevertheless, he hates eating out, since he is afraid it will happen again. I asked him to talk about this with his mother. It turned out that her mother simply got a heart attack every time, because when she was a child a wall collapsed behind her back, and since then if anything breaks around her, her reaction is like that. It also turned out that she was also worried that her son might get hurt.
You see how much depends on whether you communicate with others in a clear way? But for this, you need to know your fears and to know how the events of your past influence the present.

4. Change your viewpoint

Face them! Now that you have elaborated on the exact causes of your fears, think about it: is it a realistic fear? What will happen if you fail? Nothing – but if you don’t even try, you will think about it for the rest of your life, WHAT IF? I wouldn’t wish this kind of life on anyone. Once your attitude is changed, here comes the next step: you should face your fear.

E.g. “I’m afraid I won’t be enough.”
– Why do you think so?
E.g. “My mother always told me no-one would want me,” “My ex-partner told me I would never find anyone better than him,” etc.
– Is my fear real? What do I think?

Write down your opinion honestly, why you think you are not enough. If you always write “I’m unlucky in this”, “every man is an asshole”, “I’ll be fooled again, no matter what” and the like, than look a bit further: what happens if you don’t succeed the first or second time? Nothing. Is every man really an asshole? Surely not. If you know only one who isn’t, you should hope that there are more. This can’t be your attitude, since you will get what is in your head. And finally: why would you be fooled again? Just because you failed an exam once, you won’t fail again. Just because you got lost in a city once, you won’t necessarily get lost again. Think about it. We always learn and grow.

Why isn’t your attitude like this: the more times you are fooled and the more negative experience you have, the easier it will be in the long run to see who can stay and who should go. After a while you will be able to spot the people you have nothing to do with you in no time, and you will be able to save many weeks, months, years and great disappointments. Let things happen the way they are supposed to happen, and don’t rule out the possibility that something might turn out good at the end of the day. I know it is difficult to believe that you deserve good things, but it is worth a try.

5. Always have a plan B

A Plan B will calm you down. It will take the pressure off of you, and FINALLY you can relax. What if, for example, you never find Mr. Right or you don’t have anyone for years? That isn’t a tragedy either. I get plenty of letters from readers saying they are alone, and don’t even have the chance to get to know people, but they would like to be with someone. What if you get to know and love yourself first? What if you discover and polish your skills? If you end up alone, make use of the valuable time you have received – let me add, not by coincidence. At times like this you can move on faster than when you have someone on your side. Shape your attitude, one without desperation. Accept the situation you are in and make the most of it. From the very moment you accept what you have and you decide that, not everyone has to live according to the expectations of society after all, you will be free from desperation and fear. This is called letting go. This is about “I’ve done everything I could and I accept what I have and won’t fight it anymore. It will happen when it happens, and until then I ‘m enjoying life.” Opportunities are stifled by clinging, but if you are open minded and receptive, miracles will come… and we have all heard stories like “it happened exactly when I had given up hope.” Well, something like this happens before that.

A-Sides With Jon Chattman: Counting (on) Stars; May Edition of 5 for Fighting With… Five for Fighting

Decades after its release, people still question if Alanis Morrisette misused the word “Ironic” in her hit song. I still don’t care. Speaking of irony, fellow Canadians Stars dropped an album last fall, their seventh, called No One is Lost, which wreaks of irony. Like their previous efforts, the latest album from the Canucks I’ve loved since their first record in 2000 (is the term Canuck OK to say?) is a slice of emotive, sometimes dark, but always synth pop.

A-Sides had the good fortune of interviewing the band at their recent Webster Hall show, where they took part in a laid back interview and performed a pair of tracks, one of which, comes off their 2010 effort The Five Ghosts, which I consider their best. But then again, who am I? Certainly not Jean Valjean. Anyway, watch on, and enjoy Stars. Filmed by Shoot Me Peter.

“This is the Last Time”

“Dead Hearts”

For StarsA-Sides interview, go to there.

Five for Fighting
has little to do with the band Stars so I won’t attempt a segue. I will, however, say this: there’s no doubt singer/songwriter/sports fanatic John “FFF” John Ondrasik appreciates the Youppi namedrop I did in my line of questioning above this sentence (if you clicked on the interview link.) Anyway, as Ondrasik has done for several months now, he sat down with me – in the digital realm anyway – and answered five silly questions for this column within a column I like to call 5 for Fighting with…Five for Fighting. So, sit back and relax, and read this irreverently irrelevant interview!

You’ve had such a long career and it continues to blossom (it’s spring so that word is a nice touch by the way). If you ever sat down to write an autobiography about your life. What would the title be, and who would write the foreword?
The title would be “Michael Jordan — My Life” I’ve always been one for creative marketing and would like to sell more than 12 books. (You can write the foreward as I hear you excel at bio’s)

Thanks for the plug! I did write your bio on your website. Off topic, one of your songs from yesteryear was called “Easy Tonight.” Was that about your college years? Zing. Burn. Ugh.
No, that song was “Summa Cum Laude”. Why do all my songs have EASY in the lyric? EASY Tonight, Superman (It’s not EASY), EASY Like Sunday Morning, EASY Lover, It’s so EASY to fall in love, Take it EASY, Peaceful EASY Feeling…Are you not impressed? Eazy E got nothing on me.

Notice how I left “EASY” in all caps? That’s how I roll. Anyway, why does Cinco de Mayo always fall on May 5th?
What is this? A beauty pageant?

Indeed. Bookends came out in 2013. Get with it man — let’s get another album together. If you need help, I can play air triangle.
OMG…Either you are trolling me or butchered my title. It’s Bookmarks buddy…and for that slight I’m tripling my monthly fee for B-Sides.

I love bookmarks, and clearly have Simon & Garfunkel on my mind. Lastly, my birthday is this month. What are you going to get me? Will it be the same thing you got me last year?

Another Daenerys Targaryen inflatable love doll on it’s way.

Jon Chattman’s music series features celebrities and artists (established or not) from all genres of music performing a track and discussing what it means to them. This informal series focuses on the artist making art in a low-threatening, extremely informal (sometime humorous) way. No bells, no whistles, just the music performed in a random, low-key setting followed by an unrehearsed chat. In an industry where everything often gets overblown and overmanufactured, Jon strives for a refreshing change. • Jon Stewart Tells Dana Perino That Fox’s ‘The Five’ & ‘The Daily Show’ Would Make A ‘Sh*t Taco’

“The Daily Show” is not exactly known as friendly turf for Fox News hosts. But on Wednesday night, “The Five” co-host Dana Perino ventured into what many at her channel might regard as enemy territory.

When Jon Stewart explained that his team was “obsessed” with “The Five,” Perino suggested their programs join forces.

“It’s like Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups — peanut butter and chocolate,” Perino said. “Maybe we could all get together here and have a mashup.”

“I think of it more as a shit taco,” Stewart replied. “I’m not saying who’s who. I’m just saying I don’t know that it’s necessarily two great tastes that go great together.”

As he mocked some of her co-hosts, Perino gamely played along. And when Stewart asked about the “dumb guy” on the “The Five,” Perino quickly asked, “Could you be more specific?”

Stewart was referring to Eric Bolling, who Perino noted had a dog named Freedom “after the Freedom Towers, ok, so watch the jokes.”

That elicited an eye roll from Stewart.

“My dog’s named Holocaust,” Stewart shot back. “I’m just saying, you want to have a dog tragedy-off, well, I think I’ve got that covered.”

‘Bullpen Therapy’ for the Central Park Five

    2015-02-09-BullpenCtrlPk5.jpg
From left to right, Raymond Santana Jr., State Sen. Bill Perkins, Joe Assadourian, Yusef Salaam, Kevin Richardson, and producer Eric Krebs (credit: Ben Mann).

Saturday, Feb. 7, was the third time I saw The Bullpen by Joe Assadourian. Assadourian is one of those break-out stars in the vein of Keenan and Damon Wayans and John Leguizamo. Like them, he draws from his New York experiences to bring characters to life. On this occasion, three of the Central Park Five were in attendance. They participated in a panel discussion with Assadourian after the show. The Bullpen addresses Assadourian’s encounter with the New York criminal justice system after a nightclub scuffle left one man wounded in the buttocks and Assadourian charged with assault. He offers a humorous glimpse into the flaws of the justice system. However, as Mr. Assadourian aptly states, “It is hard enough doing time when you’re guilty, but when you are innocent?!” That statement summed up my curiosity about the attendance of the Central Park Five. Would they find humor in Assadourian’s performance after being villified by the media and unjustly incarcerated? But the laughter of the Central Park Five was like medicine to the heart. Raymond Santana Jr., Yusef Salaam, and Kevin Richardson exuded a power of forgiveness, graciousness, and resilience that I cannot begin to understand after their horrific ordeal.

In 1989, a woman was brutally beaten and raped while jogging in Central Park. The police rounded up five teenage boys between the ages of 14 and 16, all African-American and Hispanic, and accused them. A media firestorm ensued, with the boys being vilified as the worst of humanity, deserving of death by electric chair. Donald Trump led the charge in assigning them guilt before the trial had even taken place, taking out full-page ads in several New York newspapers. Although none of the DNA or physical evidence supported the charges, they were convicted of the beating and rape of the Central Park jogger, who later was identified as Trisha Meili. The teenagers spent seven to 13 years in prison until another inmate, Matias Reyes, confessed. Reyes’ DNA matched the semen from the rape of Trisha Meili and other rapes during that time. Despite DNA evidence exonerating the Central Park Five of wrongdoing, Donald Trump and others within the justice system continue to disparage them, alleging that they must be guilty of something, scientific evidence be damned!

New York State Sen. Bill Perkins, Joe Assadourian, Raymond Santana Jr., Yusef Salaam, Kevin Richardson, and show producer Eric Krebs were part of the discussion panel.

Joe Assadourian saw the Central Park Five documentary while serving time at Otisville Correctional Facility. He commented on how surreal it was that, just a year ago, he was in prison watching their story, and now Raymond, Yusef, and Kevin were here watching him perform. His pivotal statement: “It is hard enough doing time when you’re guilty, but when you are innocent?!” Joe credited his director, Richard Hoehler, for providing writing workshops at Otisville as therapy and a tool to make him productive after his release. Richard Hoehler has provided writing and acting workshops at Otisville — unfunded — for the past two years.

Raymond Santana Jr. said that watching Assadourian perform was “bullpen therapy.” He could relate to every character portrayed, particularly because he was not released on bail. He spent 17 months in the bullpen before being convicted and transferred to a juvenile detention center and later prison. Exonerated in 2002, after spending their youth and young adulthood in prison falsely, they were simply released as if nothing had ever happened. Not until the 2012 documentary, Central Park Five, were their voices and story finally heard. Attending Assadourian’s show was part-therapy. Santana stated that being in prison is lonely, and that without support from family, anything is liable to happen to you. “Prison can kill your spirit, a social death,” he said. The documentary gave them a platform. When I asked Raymond about his impressions of the controversies surrounding Ferguson, Eric Garner, and Trayvon Martin, he replied that the Central Park Five were the original “stop and frisk.” Like Michael Brown, they were demonized in the media. There was no “innocent until proven guilty,” because the media had already convicted them.

Assadourian responded that until his experience in the bullpen, he always wondered: How could a confession be coerced? He equated being in the bullpen to torture. You are awakened at 4 a.m. for trial and not returned to the bullpen until 11:30 p.m., and awakened again at 4 a.m. the next day, and the cycle continues. He noted that it causes such a state of delirium that you would confess to anything just to stop it. It reminds me of a similar situation in Chicago in the 1980s. Under Police Commander Jon Burge, police used torture tactics, electric shock to genitals and plastic-bag suffocation to make people arrested for traffic violations confess to heinous crimes. Over 100 African-American men were convicted during Jon Burge’s reign. The torture scandal was a well-known secret within the police department and to State Attorney Richard Daley, who later became the mayor. While State Attorney, Daley prosecuted and requested the death penalty in cases where police torture was utilized. Some people continue to believe that the men had to be guilty of something or they would not have confessed. For such people, to believe otherwise is an acknowledgement that the police and state attorney conspired to convict innocent men to build their careers and political profile. We all know that that sort of thing does not happen in America.

Yusef Salaam commented that Assadourian’s show was the most amazing thing he had ever seen. He too was able to relate to the characters. The Bullpen was helpful because they received no therapy or counseling after they were exonerated. Even now, he cannot take the subway because being too close to people brings back memories from time in prison, where closeness meant danger. He wished programs like the one available to Assadourian at Otisville were at more prisons. He used poetry as a way to release his feelings. At his sentencing hearing, he rapped his statement to the judge in lyrical verse later used in Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing, which the media slammed as Salaam bologna.

Kevin Richardson called Assadourian’s performance hilarious and raw. He was in the ninth grade when they were arrested. He recalled walking down the street and people pointing, saying, “That’s the rapist.” Those words hurt, because he was raised by women and around his sisters.

Assadourian stated that prison is all about punishment, not rehabilitation. Yet something must be done to help those coming out of prison so that they have options. Richard Hoehler’s writing program at Otisville gave him options such that when he was released, he immediately started performing The Bullpen. What started as a nine-minute piece for a writing workshop evolved into the 70-minute performance. Assadourian has been auditioning for other roles. None of these opportunities would have existed but for Richard Hoehler’s programs at Otisville.

I asked Raymond Santana Jr. why he agreed to do a panel discussion with Assadourian. He said that it was right up his alley and there was an immediate connection. Although the media, city, police, and district attorney never apologized for their part in this miscarriage of justice, he has forgiveness. He channels that energy into speaking to kids and getting their story out.

Aesop said it best: “No plea from the innocent will save him from an unjust judge.” While the city and Donald Trump railed against the Central Park Five as despicable monsters, they instead have chosen to show forgiveness toward a system that is terribly flawed and in need of repair. Until we acknowledge that our criminal justice system is broken, miscarriages of justice on behalf of prosecutors abusing discretion and law enforcement acting without impunity will continue.

To experience The Bullpen, be sure to catch Joe Assadourian’s performance at the Playroom Theater by March 21.

The Last Five Years Official Trailer #1 (2015) – Anna Kendrick Movie HD

THE LAST FIVE YEARS by Tony award winning composer/lyricist Jason Robert Brown is a musical deconstruction of a love affair and a marriage taking place over a five year period. Jamie Wellerstein is a young, talented up and coming novelist who falls in love with Cathy Hiatt, a struggling actress. Their story is told almost entirely through songs using an intercutting time line device; all of Cathy’s songs begin at the end of their marriage and move backwards in time to the beginning of their love affair while Jamie’s songs start at the beginning of their affair and move forward to the end of their marriage. Its beautiful pop music score portrays an honest, heartbreaking, often funny, exploration of love and it’s consequences on individual identity.

Five Reasons Vintage Clothing Is Not Just “Old Used Clothes” (Even Though It Kind of Is)

As the owner of the online vintage clothing shop Rococo Vintage, I have been working closely with vintage and antique garments for quite some years now. Even before founding my own shop, I spent the bulk of my teen years scouring thrift and vintage stores for treasures, and then the end of my teen years as the assistant to a now very successful LA-based vintage clothing seller.

I was raised in a Victorian house in New England, surrounded by antique furniture and skeleton keys and ancient table linens, and I suppose all that early exposure to, well, “a whole lot of old stuff,” left an imprint on my heart and my mind. I love the character of vintage clothing, the specialness, the whimsy. Unfortunately, many people just see the garments — no matter how valuable or glorious — as nothing more than “old used clothes.” Here are five reasons that just simply isn’t so.

    2015-01-08-vintagelineupme.jpg

Me, wearing some “old stuff” while getting ready for a vintage show.
(fyi, this is basically the vintage gal’s version of a bathroom selfie.)

    1. The quality. The quality of vintage clothing is simply unmatched by that of contemporary clothing, with the exception only of today’s highest end luxury designers. Before the 1970’s when polyester first became king, and especially before the early 1960’s, clothing was constructed to last. The end game with fashion was quality over quantity, for reasons both financial and cultural, and it is not uncommon to find luxurious details like French seams, generous hems, and exquisitely crafted buttons on even the most basic of older vintage garments. These days, even dresses that cost hundreds of dollars boast barely a millimeter of extra fabric, and a quick look at the interior of these garments reveals that regardless of the quality of the design, they were constructed with heightened attention paid to saving the manufacturer money. These days clothing is cheaper to make but not always cheaper to own, and it is only by wearing vintage that a person has the chance to experience true luxury construction (think, Chanel) at a less-than-luxury price. There is nothing as flattering as an artfully crafted garment. Plus, all that extra fabric on the inside of vintage clothing means that it is much easier to have it tailored to fit you perfectly. How great is that?!

    2015-01-08-vintagelineup4.jpg

Dresses from the 1930’s, 1920’s, and 1950’s, respectively. Look at those details!
They just don’t make ’em like they used to.

    2. The uniqueness. When you invest in a vintage garment, you can rest assured that you will never walk into a room to find another person wearing the same thing you are (except by the greatest-ever case of vintage-lightning striking twice.) The most special vintage is entirely unique and bursting with whimsical details that cannot be accurately reproduced; the prints, the pintucks, the buttons… there just isn’t anything like them. This is a big part of the reason why so many celebrities have become such big fans of vintage clothing, as they know that they will easily stand out from everyone else on the red carpet with no concern of winding up in a “Who Wore it Best” column. There is something to be said for owning and wearing something that just about nobody else in all the world owns or can wear (and in the case of custom-made vintage garments, of which there are many, absolutely nobody else in the world does or can.) Every garment is a treasure!

    2015-01-07-taylorforhufpost.jpg

Taylor Swift, who is a big fan of vintage clothing,
wearing a vintage 1950’s dress from Rococo Vintage.

    3. The stories you hear. Whether or not you are able to discover it, every vintage garment comes with a story. Little is more exciting than being able to trace the origin of a garment — known as the “provenance” — and to be able to conjure up wonderful images of its past life. Even in cases when you cannot find any details beyond where you yourself came across a piece, it takes only a drop of imagination to create those special stories yourself. Vintage and antique clothing is seeped in mystery and history, and learning or dreaming it is half the charm of wearing it. Of course, this is one of the things that some non-vintage-fans object to, as I suppose it takes a certain kind of person to want to think about who wore something before you did, but if you already do or can learn to love it, I cannot tell you how much excitement it brings to simply getting dressed in the morning. It’s rather like having a bunch of wonderful imaginary friends hanging out in your closet!

    2015-01-07-dee02c14475d006b6020d69d8fab99c3.jpg

Who was this young woman? Was this her favorite dress? Did she meet her soulmate while wearing it? Was she a painter? A poet? A professional wartime code breaker? These are the kinds of questions you find yourself asking and wondering about (and loving to ask and wonder about!) when you wear vintage clothing. Photo of unknown girl, c. 1940’s.

    4. The people you meet. With absolutely no intention of patting my own back (I swear!) vintage sellers are some of the most fascinating people I have ever met. Whether they own vintage shops, sell at flea markets, or are selling their own or a relative’s old wardrobes, they are people with a great love and respect for what they are doing. It takes a special kind of non-historian historian to be a part of the “vintage world,” and the perspective of vintage sellers is often an entirely unique one. In addition to the sellers themselves, when you wear vintage you find yourself making friends just about everywhere you go. Anytime I wear a vintage or antique piece, I find myself being stopped on the street or approached in line at coffee shops by someone wanting to inquire about what I’m wearing. I’ve even made friends this way! There is certainly something (or a lot) to be said for having the freedom to wander about in jeans and T-shirts or yoga pants and sweatshirts when you want to, but there is also something very special about dressing in a way that reaches out to others without your having to say a word. Vintage clothing is wonderfully nostalgic and invites meaningful conversation in ways that modern clothing just doesn’t.

    2015-01-08-vintagelineuprodellee.jpg

With my good friend Rodellee Bas of AdoredVintage, who is one of many friends I’ve made thanks to a mutual love of vintage clothing.

    5. The clothing has a soul. Vintage clothing is more than just “old used clothes.” It is more than new unworn clothes. It is history, and art, and the stories of those who have come before us. Owning and wearing vintage clothing is a way of keeping those people and those histories and that artistry alive. At the end of the day, to wear vintage clothing is to be wrapped in romance. Vintage clothing is simply special. It just is.

This is an extraordinary time in the dance world, when five of the greatest ballerinas of our time, from leading American ballet companies, have, coincidentally, all announced their retirement within months of each other. Ballet to the People caught up with Wendy Whelan, Carla Körbes, Paloma Herrera, Xiomara Reyes, and Julie Kent to ask:

What in your view has been the most significant change in the dance world since you started out as a young dancer. How would you counsel a young dancer who is just starting out?

Wendy Whelan left Louisville, Kentucky, as a teenager to attend the School of American Ballet then spent her entire career at New York City Ballet. “… [A]n ideally modern woman, dancing with men as if part of a team, together on equal terms,” says The New York Times of her qualities as a ballerina. This modern woman acknowledges:

I’m from a very different generation. There were the giant choreographers – Martha Graham, George Balanchine, Merce Cunningham, Trisha Brown – who were creating huge volumes of work… I came in at the tail end of the Balanchine [era], surrounded by his dancers.

Dancers today are not so bound by the idea of a patriarch like Balanchine. Maybe that’s a good thing. They’re more open to other influences… But something gets a little bit lost, watered down. Now a New York City Ballet dancer is not surrounded by Balanchine’s dancers – it’s a huge change for a company that represents his work. We’re now floating a little more than the previous generation was. Dancers have more freedom today in how to dance Balanchine – and more opportunity to dance other artists’ work. While New York City Ballet no longer has one strong, profound resident choreographer, they do have an amazing young one in the ranks [Justin Peck].

Mr. B grew his company like a garden. It’s harder to find a company built around one choreographer’s work these days; it makes dancing in a company very different. It’s up to each dancer to choose one [environment] over the other: whatever makes you a better dancer.

Brazilian-born Carla Körbes also trained at SAB and started her career at New York City Ballet, but spent the last decade at Pacific Northwest Ballet in Seattle. Her interpretive power astonishes, from the delicate airiness of her partnership with Karel Cruz in the central slow movement of Alexei Ratmansky’s Concerto DSCH to her haunting, feverish Sleepwalker in George Balanchine’s La Sonnambula. Though only 33, she has witnessed a sea change in the dance world:

Thanks to technology, dancers today have a much wider view of the dance world than when I first moved to New York. At age 14, coming to the U.S., all I knew was American Ballet Theatre, Baryshnikov, Nureyev, and some of the European companies. I barely knew anything about Balanchine. Today, dancers have so much more information, and are much more mobile. Kids are traveling everywhere to go to summer programs, funding themselves with Kickstarter – putting their dreams on the Internet and seeing if they will pan out.

There are positives to moving around, and changing companies: you put things in perspective, you can compare living and working conditions. Living in one city, you tend to take things for granted, your view is much more narrow. In Europe, a dancer can leave for a year and still keep her original contract. You get to explore and grow as a person and as a dancer. A legacy like Wendy’s of 30 years in one company is so rare today.

Technology can be amazing: for example, last year at Vail [the Vail International Dance Festival], I had been working with [choreographer] Brian Brooks. I had to leave, but he said “No problem. If we need more time, we can work via Skype.”

In 1996, when I first arrived in New York, Skype was not an option!

Then again, sometimes too much information is confusing. Sometimes knowing less, having fewer options is good. Dancers haven’t really changed as much [as some people believe] – even with new training and all the information we get about diet and physical therapy. Dancers will still push too hard, will still get injured. We get clashing advice from nutritionists. We’re always trying to learn from the experts. But, eventually, we go back to our instincts. I’ve learned, after 18 years of gathering information, to eat then check in with my body – how do I feel? I’ve learned to eat whatever makes my body feel good. As a teenager, I was just so confused, overwhelmed by all the information.

Paloma Herrera, like Körbes, came to New York at a very young age. At 15, she was offered a contract with American Ballet Theatre, and, like Whelan, has spent her entire career with one company.

Even the most jaded ballet-goers rhapsodize over the luxurious unfolding of her leg in développé out of a supported pirouette, and in the articulation of her gloriously arched feet. While her passion onstage has hardly dimmed, she concedes:

It’s a new generation now, especially with the new media. I’ve danced with the most incredible partners, including Angel Corella, Jose Manuel Carreño, and Vladimir Malakhov – I loved that time, it was a golden era.

Now I want to watch ballet from the audience, to join the people who take the time to go to the theatre, to experience live theatre. I don’t feel connected with this generation anymore. People don’t seem to have the time anymore, to meet, to have coffee, to have a conversation over dinner. They walk around but they don’t see things, don’t see the city they live in.

I took chances when I was very young. I was offered a contract with the most wonderful company in the world. I didn’t think too hard about it, made a very quick decision. My parents back in Argentina were incredibly supportive. They gave me so much freedom – that security, knowing you had their love no matter what. But I could never advise anyone else to live their life like I’ve lived mine: 100% in the moment, with no plans for the future, ever. I never thought about what was coming next – I still don’t. Of course I worked really hard and gave my life to dance. You also have to be lucky. Some people have all the talent, but not the passion, or the luck. Some work so hard but simply don’t have the talent. You have to look at your own gift, and your own limitations.

And you need humility. Because ballet is about going back into class every single day, rehearsing everyday, fixing everything – it’s about the working process, not about being a superstar. Some dancers today want to be celebrities. But that is not why I dance. I’m not on Twitter and Facebook, I live in the theatre, on the stage. That’s where the excitement is. No two performances are the same. Even in the same role in the same ballet, night after night, every performance is unique: some are great, some disastrous.

One of my most thrilling experiences was performing at the International Ballet Festival of Havana. Ballet in Cuba is like soccer in Argentina – such a commotion! Naturally it was televised. And the audience knows the choreography by heart – you don’t dare change a step!

Cuba is very much on Xiomara Reyes‘ mind. A tiny dynamo whom Bachtrack describes as “bringing sunshine wherever she goes,” Reyes trained at Cuba’s National Ballet School. For her, the recent defrosting of U.S.-Cuba relations is earthshaking:

Anything that can mend a rip in our world is an Alleluia moment for me. The Cuban soul is very deeply hurt, and I believe it will be a long process of healing. This [announcement] is a step in that direction, I hope. For a Cuban dancer it means the opening of more choice and possibility, and that is of infinite value.

She bids farewell to American Ballet Theatre after 14 years, before which she spent seven years with the Royal Ballet of Flanders. She, too, notes with ambivalence the rise of social media and its impact on the dance world:

With Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and other media, dancers have new opportunities to be noticed and, while I think these are wonderful outlets that give more people the opportunity to follow dancers whom they might never see perform live, I also believe it may be overwhelming for a young dancer who is trying to find her own voice. Social media can become a rat race. Dance is not only an external endeavor but also an internal search… Our need for exposure, this thirst for communication and public recognition, has a tendency to push us outward before we work inward.

To a young dancer I would say: be aware of that trap. Take the time to find out what dancing really means to you, how it shapes you as a human being. Nourish yourself with the art you create – explore what that means. And then: dance, live, share!

Recently dubbed by The Washington Post “a font of regal beauty” in the role of fairy queen Titania, Julie Kent will bow out in a final performance of Romeo and Juliet.

Looking back over her 29 seasons with American Ballet Theatre, she marvels at the sweeping social change:

Perestroika. The end of the Cold War. The fall of Communism. The arrival of the Internet, cellular communications, social media and branding. All had great impact on society, the arts, the ballet world.

Because the world is now smaller, Russian dancers no longer have to defect to be seen in the West. Everyone is everywhere, all the time – in reality, and virtually on Facebook. This is not necessarily good or bad: everyone has to understand life is forward-moving. Dancers often look back and think their time was the greatest compared to today – but they think that mainly because they were young then!

It’s more challenging now for a young dancer. They want international careers, so they feel they can’t stay with one company.

Yet some things haven’t changed much for dancers. When I debuted in Swan Lake in 1993 that was one performance, one matinee. My next Swan Lake was a year later, and also just one performance. It’s difficult to develop as a dancer with so few opportunities to tackle the big roles in multiple performances – because the process of learning in the rehearsal studio is different than the process of learning on stage through multiple performances. Talking with Isabella Boylston who debuted as Odette-Odile in 2013, I realize it’s been a similar challenge for her.

It’s a tough balancing act for big companies to give dancers opportunities to grow. Audiences also want to see foreign guest stars – which is exciting for us, too, in the company, but it makes it harder for up-and-coming dancers to develop. I was fortunate to have partners who wanted me to dance with them around the world – Julio Bocca in Argentina, Vladimir Malakhov in Finland, Jose Manuel Carreño in Japan, Roberto Bolle in Italy, etc. So even though I stayed with one company, I had opportunities to perform roles multiple times, and grow in that way.

For younger dancers today, there is also more pressure to be a star. It used to be that people wanted to do something, now they want to be something. “I want to be a principal,” instead of “I want to dance.” But being a star and having a fulfilling career are not always the same thing.

Soon after I was given my corps de ballet contract, I was invited to appear in the movie Dancers, opposite Baryshnikov. After the film came out, I visited Nora Kaye [the former dancer, who collaborated with her husband, director Herbert Ross, on the film] who was on her deathbed in Los Angeles. She said, “You could have a career in film. Are you interested?”

“I want to dance,” I replied. It was so simple – that is what I had wanted to do since I was 7. I always had that sense of purpose, that driving force.

One of my platforms for young people is to focus on the process and the pursuit of excellence, not the destination. The work is our labor and our reward. Once you get where you’re going, it’s over!

What’s next for each of these ballerinas? Ballet to the People wanted to know.

Wendy Whelan will crisscross the country with Restless Creature, a series of contemporary duets by four young choreographers, which premiered at Jacobs Pillow last summer then traveled to the Royal Opera House in London. Restless Creature‘s American tour starts in San Francisco in mid-January and winds up at the Joyce Theatre in New York in May.

A new project with Edward Watson of the Royal Ballet will premiere in London in July. And a third piece of opera/dance theatre is simmering at the Brooklyn Academy of Music: an adaptation of the ancient Japanese Noh drama Hagoromo, about a celestial spirit whose magic power resides in a robe of feathers.

Carla Körbes wraps up a splendidly varied season at PNB this spring then powers on to Vail again this summer. Her knee is getting better, she says, and she’s excited to immerse herself in the festival. What would she like to dance? More Balanchine, if she had her wish! But she is also keen to work with new choreographers, found the experience working with Brian Brooks hugely inspiring.

Retiring at this age, I’m still young and I’m excited. It’s the end of company life for me, which gives me new options, frees me to do other things in the art world. Before I left City Ballet, at a time when I was struggling, I spoke with Eliot Feld, who told me: “Leave when you’re happy.” I never forgot this. I never take any of this for granted.

Julie Kent will write a memoir, a book which she hopes will reflect her voice as an American dancer, a female artist, a passionate arts advocate, as well as a wife and a mother of two children.

I have expressed myself without words for so long. The life of a ballerina seems so mysterious from afar, but the reality is that there are things that many people from different backgrounds and professions can connect with.

Ballet to the People looks forward to her setting the record straight – after Darren Aronofsky’s blood-and-feathers study in ballerina paranoia, the Black Swan horror flick.

Paloma Herrera bids American audiences Adieu with a final performance as Princess Aurora in Sleeping Beauty in June, but her Argentinian farewell comes later in the year. Globe-trotting balletomanes are prepared to travel long distances to catch her Tatiana in Onegin in October at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, a dramatic role she has long prized. After her final curtseys, she plans to indulge her love of theatre, of reading, and listening to music.

Ballet has been my bubble, my life, my religion… Now I will enjoy this time in a different way.

Xiomara Reyes will dance a final Giselle in May. Reflecting at this crossroad, she knows dance will continue to be an important part of her life:

Dancing has been my life’s journey ever since I can remember. I have found that to stand at the barre every morning is a kind of meditation, a spiritual experience.

I love teaching and sharing with young people the amazing world of ballet, which is why I’ve been co-directing the IBStage program for two years.

I feel like I’m standing in front of this huge buffet of possibilities and I’m taking my time to chose. Not because I don’t like what I see, but because I want to honor my standstill point: that moment where you have to stand still and regroup, before throwing yourself back into the whirlpools of life.

Collectively, these five ballerinas have redefined virtuosity and grace for the art form in the 21st century – their natural gifts honed by artistic sensitivity and perseverance. No one is born to be a prima ballerina: it takes extraordinary discipline, acumen and gutsiness.

Will one of them eventually take a leadership role in the ballet world? None of the five appear to have sought it out.

One thing that has not changed over the span of these ballerinas’ careers is the shortage of women at the helm of ballet companies. Karen Kain is now the longest-running incumbent artistic director of a major company, having run the National Ballet of Canada for ten years. Tamara Rojo took over English National Ballet two years ago. When Brigitte Lefèvre retired after a remarkable 19 years of steering Paris Opera Ballet in a bold, new direction, she was succeeded by Benjamin Millepied. In Britain, Monica Mason called the shots at the Royal Ballet for ten years, replaced by Kevin O’Hare in 2012. In America, Lourdes Lopez has been at the head of Miami City Ballet for just two years.

As audiences for live theatre and dance continue to shrink, along with the public and private funding so critical to keeping these companies afloat, can new artistic leadership make a difference? Is it time for a reigning ballerina to be handed the reins?

Drop the Hobbit, Go with the Selkie: Hour of the Wolf Movie Review of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armiesand& Song of the Sea

2014-12-26-Hobbit_HBT3066511r_410.jpgThere’s a bit of OCD that goes along with genre film fandom — once you’ve signed on to a franchise, you’re kind-of obligated to follow it wherever it will take you, for good or ill. Thus the sullen air hanging over screenings of Revenge of the Sith or any of the Wolverine spin-offs — it really does sap the energy out of an auditorium when attendance is more dutiful than enthusiastic.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is the final installment of Peter Jackson’s latest J.R.R. Tolkien trilogy, and to say it’s long-awaited is to say that fans of fantasy have been eager to get this bloated, unnecessary epic over with and move on to better things. I give my thoughts on how Jackson wraps up this prequel tale in my review for Jim Freund’s Hour of the Wolf, and also give my verdict on the much more engaging, Irish animated fantasy, Song of the Sea. Five Tips for Awakening to Love

“The greatest art is to sit, and wait, and let it come.” — Yogi Bhajan

    2014-12-18-unnamed3.jpg

I believe in God. I believe in Angels. I believe in Miracles. I trust Love. I believe that when we open our hearts with gratitude, we attract more to be grateful for. I also believe in prosperity and feel that by living through the heart and giving to others, we lift our vibratory field, and draw in abundance. God created the trees, flowers, oceans, sunrises and sunsets, and the natural law which keeps our world evolving. Why do we question if God will take care of us?

We are living in a secular society, and mysticism is something we are conditioned to question. We fear for our world. We fear for ourselves and our families. Our minds are biased to negativity, and therefore, we often perceive information that is meant to be neutral as something that is hurtful.

What if we could move beyond the fear-based mindsets and live from the space of tender love in our hearts? What if we trusted that sending prayers out to others, instead of worrying and feeling sad for them, would be enough? Imagine a world where we could trust the divine intelligence of the universe. Love and Light leading the path to eternal life. What a miracle.

Pushing, forcing, manipulating and competing are tactics that do not work anymore. Our world is changing quickly, and we are beginning to understand that without knowing how, miracles are all around us. There are no coincidences in life Every encounter is a light that shines to show us the path to our destiny. When we choose to focus on love and thankfulness, something profound shifts in our lives. A flow becomes very apparent. Just like the flowers bloom naturally by the force of nature, our lives unfold with grace. The beauty of a surrendering into the blossoming with patience and trust is a gift for us at this time.

How do we shift into the miracle mindset?

    1. Breath. Breathing deeply and slowly changes our brain chemistry instantaneously. Imagine the lower belly as a balloon that expands with each inhale. As the exhale releases through the nose, the lower belly soften towards the spine.

    2. Gratitude. Taking a couple minutes daily to write down ten things we are grateful for is one of the most efficient tools for happiness. Giving thanks for the blessings we are desiring before they are in our lives is a magical practice.

    3. Observation. When we observe the miracles that we encounter daily, we begin to recognize Grace at work. The book that falls off the shelf when we are at the library with our children which provides the wisdom we need at that exact moment. The beautiful new friend we meet in a crowded cafe on a snowy day when we are craving a hot cup of tea is a soul that needs our smile at that instant. The butterfly that appears before our eyes when we are missing a loved one is a reminder that heaven is real. The song that plays when we are in traffic, reminding us that another is thinking of us just as we are thinking of them, is the reinforcement of soul connectivity.

    4. Affirmation. When we retrain our brains from old belief systems that are holding us back from joy by using the power of affirmations, we are creating an expansion of love in our hearts. A simple affirmation is to state: “I am the light and love of my soul, and everything is in perfect order. I believe in the power of miracles.”

    5. Prayer. How can we deny the power of something much larger than us? Prayer is the greatest technique for moving out of our own way. Prayer is the tool that allows us to place our concerns in the hand of the divine. When I pray, I place my forehead on the ground so my mind is lower than my heart. This brings my energy to the frequency love. Once I feel myself drop into the heart space, I speak aloud in a whisper saying: “Dear God, please show me the way to joy, healing and love. Please bless my loved ones. Please take my insecurities and fears away, so I can be a vessel for your love. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.”

Love has the power to transform us. Faith has the power to heal us. When we open our hearts, our radiance projects out into the space around our bodies, and we become magnets to miracles.

May you feel God’s Love with you as you read this. There is a reason this message is here for you. Please accept it as a gift from beyond. May God bless you today and forever.

Hope, Peace, Light, Health and Miracles to you…

Always through my Heart with Love,

    Karena

‘Top Five’: Woody and Robert and Chris, Oh My

Chris Rock enters into Woody Allen territory with his new movie Top Five. During the opening scene, as Rock’s hero Andre Allen strolls down a Manhattan avenue engaged in lively debate with reporter Chelsea Brown (co-star Rosario Dawson), Chelsea mentions that sometimes a “movie is just a movie.” That sounds like an homage to Allen’s 1980 film Stardust Memories, in which two characters are discussing the symbolic significance of the Rolls-Royce in the movie they have just watched, and one of them agonizingly concludes that “it represented… his car.”

Andre Allen, like Woody’s Sandy Bates in Stardust Memories, and like Joel McCrea’s John Sullivan, from Preston Sturges’ classic Sullivan’s Travels (1941), has built a career based on making people laugh. For reasons that will become clear during the course of the story, he is no longer interested in that. He wants to make serious movies. Andre is about to release a movie about a slave uprising in Haiti.

Chris Rock has a lot to say about race and humor and culture, and about where an artist fits into that discussion. Especially a black artist. It’s hard to think about anyone better suited to talk about that right now. Though there may be certain lines of descent linking Top Five to Sturges and Allen, Top Five‘s truest progenitor is Hollywood Shuffle, Robert Townsend’s ahead-of-its-time comedy from 1978 about a stereotyped actor trying to break free. Townsend brought a great deal of personal experience to his movie, and one suspects Rock does as well. Ultimately, two significant failings prevent Top Five from being a great movie. But there is more than enough quality material — material to make you laugh and material to make you think — to ensure that is remains quite good.

Let’s talk about that good stuff first.

Rock fills Top Five with great characters. That is a hallmark of excellent writers. Sturges and Allen (who along with Billy Wilder are arguably the greatest American comic screenwriters) never fail to offer a wealth of memorable characters. Rock’s movie seems to have everyone in Hollywood showing up at one point or another, and many of them are outstanding. Early on, Cedric the Entertainer threatens to run away with the movie during his brief stint as Jazzy Dee (“the MAN in Houston”). Toward the end, rapper DMX does a magnificently wretched jail-cell performance of “Smile,” an old Charlie Chaplin tune. In between, Rock has Allen pay a visit to old friends, and those brief scenes feature first-rate work by the likes of Sherri Shepherd, Jay Pharoah, Tracy Morgan, and Leslie Jones.

Rock also fills Top Five with big ideas, another hallmark of great writers. The plot of the movie is set up as a free-wheeling interview between performer and reporter, and some of the best sequences involve the rapid-fire back and forth debate over matters, both personal and political. Rock, as both writer and actor, has the ability to make such potentially ponderous material very fresh. Race is a central issue, but Rock is clearly interested in moving beyond that discussion. Substance abuse, fame, and the purpose of art all figure into the story. Though some issues are invariably colored by race, others are rooted in broader humanity. As a result, Rock manages to be both racially specific and universal. No small feat.

Finally, and I can’t stress this enough, Top Five is very funny. It is overflowing with comic talent. Iconic figures like Jerry Seinfeld, Adam Sandler, and Whoopi Goldberg make cameo appearances. Kevin Hart, maybe the most popular film comedian in the world today, does a signature fast-talking scene as Andre’s agent and I don’t think I even saw his name in the credits. In addition to being funny, there are very interesting conversations about the nature of comedy (though a two-second Bill Cosby reference seems a little off-putting.) Like John Sullivan — the director from Sullivan’s Travels who ultimately concludes that comedy just might have more societal value than all the heavy drama in the world — Andre Allen will have a similar epiphany. And when the time comes for him to deliver the laughs, he does not fail.

So what are the two failings? First, Rock is a great performer, but he is not a great actor. I say that with a fair amount of self-consciousness, since film critics who make such pronouncements come in for some pretty heavy abuse in Top Five. But it’s hard to ignore. When he calls on himself to do the fast stuff — obviously the fast comedy, but also the fast anger or fast frustration or fast… anything — Rock is very much in his element. It’s when he has to slow down and start exploring subtler emotions that I begin to see an actor reciting lines. Rock is okay in such moments. He just isn’t great. And since Andre Allen’s breakdown and rebirth are at the heart of the story, that matters.

But the second failing matters more, because it cuts into Rock’s greatest strength, which is as a writer. In a sense, Top Five is a romantic comedy, and if there is one truism about romantic comedies, it’s this: the audience has to root for the couple to end up together. That isn’t the case in Top Five. It has nothing to do with Rosario Dawson, a fine actress who does rather well as Chelsea. It’s the way Chelsea is written. She isn’t real, at least not as real as the others we get to see. Sure, she has struggles and problems, but those problems do not grow out of her own weaknesses and conflicts. This is a crucial point. Most of the major characters in Top Five suffer through some sort of crisis or humiliation. But Chelsea’s humiliations are not of her own doing. They are imposed on her by others. She isn’t the problem. The script tries to suggest that her bad judgment has put her in these situations, but that never really rings true. Essentially, she is always right. Even when she does suffer humiliation at the hands of her boyfriend (hilariously played by Workaholics‘ Anders Holm) she gets a magnificent, kick-ass revenge. The two other women in Andre’s life — reality star fiancée Erica (Gabrielle Union) and former girlfriend Vanessa (Sherri Shepherd) both get very brief moments of weakness which have far more emotional honesty than anything Chelsea gets. Chelsea is in the movie for one reason and one reason only: to rescue Andre. She is too wise and too caring and too perfect. And that is the kiss of death.

But of course, it’s just a movie, and in a movie, death is relative. Top Five is all about rebirth. It manages to transcend its failings and still be relevant and smart. And very funny.

It’s Hammy Time For Chris Rock In The First ‘Top Five’ Trailer

Chris Rock’s “Top Five” has already been compared to “Annie Hall,” so no pressure. The forthcoming comedy, which Paramount picked up after it premiered to strong praise during the Toronto International Film Festival, focuses on Andre Allen (Rock), a popular comedian who hopes to win respect from audiences with a new drama following his starring role in the lucrative “Hammy the Bear” trilogy. (The garbage pail of lowest-common-denominator Hollywood bunk is about a police bear; his catchphrase: “It’s Hammy time.”)

“I don’t feel like doing funny movies anymore. I don’t feel funny,” Rock as Allen says in the first “Top Five” trailer. The irony there is that “Top Five,” which Rock also wrote and directed, is super funny. It’s also smart, timely and stuffed to the gills with stars: Rosario Dawson, Kevin Hart, Gabrielle Union, J.B. Smoove, Whoopi Goldberg, Adam Sandler, Jerry Seinfeld, Cedric the Entertainer, Leslie Jones and Tracy Morgan, among others. Jay Z and Kanye West are co-producers. “Top Five” is out in limited release on Dec. 5 before a nationwide bow on Dec. 12.

Ready to let go of “Let It Go” ? Disney isn’t. Mouse has five year plan for “Frozen” franchise

You’ve no doubt already heard about all of the box office records that Frozen has broken over the past eight months (With the most recent one being the 16 weeks that this Walt Disney Animation Studios production spent as the No. 1 film in Japan. Frozen sold over $ 240 million worth of tickets in that country before it was finally knocked out of the top spot. Ironically enough by another Disney movie, “Maleficent”). But were you aware of how well the Frozen soundtrack has been selling?

To date, an estimated 2.78 million units of the Frozen soundtrack have been sold. More to the point, this Walt Disney Records release has topped the Billboard 200 album chart 13 times since January.

    2014-07-21-Letting3.jpg

And since Disney executives dearly wants to keep this billion dollar franchise front-of-mind with consumers for years yet to come, they’ve now decided to use Frozen‘s songs as a way to keep the public excited about this property.

Don’t believe me? Then check out the all-new music video version of “Do You Want to Build A Snowman?” which debuted on the Disney Channel just last night. Twenty-six Disney stars came together last month to record an all-new arrangement of this Bobby Lopez / Kristen Anderson-Lopez song which Marco Marinangeli put together. All with the hope that this new music video would then help keep tweens excited about Frozen‘s tunes.

    2014-07-21-Letting1.jpg

Or — better yet — how about the “For the First Time In Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration” show. This live stage show is presented seven times daily at Disney’s Hollywood Studios as part of this theme park’s summer-long “Frozen Summer Fun” promotion. And given the hundreds of little kids & their parents who now stand in the blistering hot Central Florida sun for hours daily just to get the chance to sing along with Anna, Elsa & Kristoff inside the Premiere Theater, these songs still clearly have a powerful hold over a huge audience.

At least what’s the folks who run the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood are hoping. Given that they’ll be bringing the sing-along version of Disney Frozen back to this classic movie palace for two weeks starting on August 22nd.

    2014-07-21-Letting2.jpg

And on the consumer products side of the Mouse House, Disney believes that its Frozen karaoke album (which just debuted in Billboard’s top 20) will be a big seller. And starting in late August / early September, look for a brand-new wave of Frozen -themed merchandise to hit stores which will then attempt to capitalize on the continuing popularity of this film’s soundtrack.

These items include the Frozen Crystal Kingdom Vanity from JAKKS Pacific (which includes a musical feature where Anna & Elsa magically appear in this vanity’s mirror and then singing excerpts from this Academy Award-winning film’s score), a “Frozen Sing-Along Storybook” from Disney Publishing which includes a CD as well as the lyrics to this movie’s song, a Frozen Cool Tunes Sing-Along Boombox from Kid Design as well as a Frozen Sing & Swing Olaf plush from Just Play.

    2014-07-21-Letting4.jpg

And let’s not forget about Disney on Ice presents Frozen, the music-filled arena show that will be premiering at Orlando’s Amway Center on September 4th before Feld Entertainment then sends it off on a year-old Northern American tour. Not to mention the stage version of Frozen which Bobby & Kristen are reportedly already prepping for Disney Theatrical to produce in the not-so-distant future. And then there’s the Frozen ride that the Imagineers are reportedly prepping as a replacement for Epcot’s Maelstrom attraction.

And all of this is being done because Disney CEO Bob Iger — during a recent quarterly earnings conference call — identified Frozen as one of the Company’s top five franchises. “So you can expect us to take full advantage of that over the next at least five years,” Iger told investment analysts.

    2014-07-21-Letting5.jpg

So while you personally may be ready to let go of Let It Go, The Walt Disney Company certainly isn’t. So you should probably look for the Mouse to seek out all sorts of new ways (EX: Next summer’s “In Summer” promotion. Given that Olaf has now been identified as Frozen‘s break-out character, look for all sorts of snowman-themed beachware to show up on store shelves for Spring of 2015) to extend Frozen‘s current hot streak.

Enid Blyton: Biography of the Author Behind Noddy, The Famous Five, and The Secret Seven

Enid Blyton: Biography of the Author Behind Noddy, The Famous Five, and The Secret Seven

ABOUT THE BOOK Enid Blyton (1897-1968) stands as one of the most popular childrens book writers of the 20th century. Her legacy continues through a devoted fan base of those who grew up with her stories of inquisitive children getting into misadventures in the English countryside. Blyton also appealed to younger readers with her Noddy series, about a little boy made out of wood who lives in Toytown; the series produced a total of 24 books and a string of popular TV series. The appeal of Blytons books for older readers, from ages eight to 12, was primarily the lack of parental supervision or interference; in the Famous Five books, the indulgent aunt and uncle generally let the kids go off, unaccompanied in caravans or on camping trips across the moors at the ripe old ages of 14 though 16. MEET THE AUTHOR Paula Whiteside is currently a freelance writer for several web content providers, as well as the copy editor for Wine Business Monthly, an international industry magazine located in the Sonoma Valley Wine Country. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Although her academic career was promising, her parents marriage was not as stable. Enid later recalled nights when she would comfort her brothers at the top of the stairs as their parents loudly argued below. Her father left her mother for his secretary at the wholesale clothing business he managed when Enid was 13. To keep up appearances, the children, when asked, would tell neighbors that he was away on a visit. Enid later used this ruse as the premise for her book The Six Bad Boys, which Blyton biographer, Barbara Stoney, called an unusual attempt for Enid at social realism.” With her greatest ally gone from the home, young Enid began writing as a way to escape her mother. This most likely contributed to her prolific writing output as an adult, writing up to 10,000 words a day. The young Blyton also entertained her brothers by telling them stories, made up rhymes, wrote in her diary and read prodigiously. Her work and deter

Five Tips For Cutting Out Articles About Cutting Out Sugar

Are you trying to cut down on the amount you read about cutting down on sugar? Here are five ways to beat your craving:

    1. Clear out all sugar articles from your house
Start strong. Do a clean sweep of any newspapers or magazines that may contain sugar articles and throw them out – they’ll only tempt you.

    2. Beware of hidden sugar articles
You might think that a ‘New Year, New You’ piece in a Sunday magazine will mainly focus on getting fit and doing your own juicing – but look again and it’s likely to contain something about cutting out sugar.

    3. Eliminate sugar articles gradually from your diet
Do you read the health section of a newspaper every day? Try cutting it down to once a week. And if you consume weekly or monthly women’s magazines, limit yourself to reading them only when you’re at the hairdressers or in a doctor’s waiting room. (Warning: doctors’ waiting rooms may also carry literature about cutting out sugar.)

    4. Remember: not all ‘cut out sugar’ articles are equal
There are good sugar and bad sugar articles. Some will compare sugar to tobacco, others to heroin. Others will even proclaim to be about cutting out sugar but turn out to be spoofs.

    5. Look at the packaging
Does the article contain a picture of a woman looking mournfully at a plate of biscuits? A photograph of a pile of sugar? Be vigilant, and you’ll beat your cravings to read it.
