Who Benefits from India’s Public Services?

This pioneering independent effort to assess the state of India’s public services from a user’s perspective brings together the responses of citizens from 37,000 rural and urban households on the delivery, quality, and responsiveness of public services. While the state’s monitoring of service delivery seldom goes beyond tracking public expenditure and physical outputs, this study fills that gap and provides unique benchmarks with respect to five basic services: drinking water, primary health care, primary education, public distribution of food, and public transportation across the major states.

Missing Song from Force Awakens’ Soundtrack Released

Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams and Hamilton composer and star Lin-Manuel Miranda have released Maz’s cantina theme from The Force Awakens.

The song, called Jabba Flow, is now available on iTunes and Star Wars.com. It was co-written by Abrams and Miranda for the film in secret. The lyrics are recited in Huttese, the language spoken by the slug-like species of the Star Wars universe. Abrams revealed Miranda’s involvement as a composer and co-writer on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon back in December, but the song was not released on the film’s official soundtrack.

The Photos From Chanel’s Show In Cuba Are Absolutely Dreamy

Chanel continuously pushes the boundaries when it comes to its runway shows. But now, its all-mighty leader Karl Lagerfeld has literally crossed a boundary few of us in the United States can say we’ve crossed: He debuted Chanel’s 2017 Cruise Collection in Havana, Cuba.

With the imminent change in rules and regulations over travel to Cuba from the U.S., it was only a matter of time before someone Lagerfeld pulled a move like this. While traveling there is still out of the realm of possibility for many, some, like beloved fashion site The Coveteur, got to experience it first hand.

The website’s co-founders Jake Rosenberg and Stephanie Mark were on-site for the exclusive, dreamy event, capturing scenes from Havana’s beautiful surroundings and the show itself, which they explained had “essentially taken over an entire city plaza.”

There were colorful cars! Mojitos and lemonade! Tilda Swinton! And arguably most shocking of all: Lagerfeld in an uncharacteristically colorful outfit.

Check out all the dreaminess below, and to see more head to The Coveteur

Erin Andrews’ DWTS Blog: ‘I Felt Like Christie Brinkley from National Lampoon’s Vacation’

While the majority of Hollywood’s elite dazzled and glowed (literally!) on the Met Gala red carpet, Erin Andrews and the rest of the Dancing With the Stars team had a show to put on! And according to the host, things got sleek, chic and a little sexy on Tuesday evening’s episode. Get all of the details on the host’s look, including her curve-skimming gown, dramatic hair and makeup and more!

Erin Andrews Dancing with the StarsAdam Taylor/ABC

For the taping, Andrews and her stylist Alyssa Greene selected a slinky, long-sleeve red Elie Saab gown, which she teamed with gold-accented accessories, including Manolo Blahnik heels and Royal and Sylvie Collection jewels.

“The past few episodes we went really girly and over the top, so for this look, we wanted to go back to sleek, sexy and fierce,” Greene told PeopleStyle. “It looks super simple from the front, but when she turns around, you see the asymmetric back detail with gold buttons. We added a bit of gold bling and a super simple Manolo sandal to complete the look.”

And while Andrews calls the sexy siren gown a “little dangerous,” she says the sleek design made her feel like a supermodel. “The slit was high and a little dangerous, the host confessed. “I had to watch it walking up those ballroom stairs. Again channeling the Met Ball, I was thinking, ‘What would Rosie [Huntington-Whiteley] do?’ She was rocking a slit beautifully [last night], too!”

Erin Andrews Dancing with the StarsCourtesy Erin Andrews

As for the host’s makeup, makeup artist Lisa Ashley was all about creating a “dramatic yet simple” look for the evening, opting for a bold eye and statement lip moment. To get Andrews’ smoky eye, the makeup pro began by accenting the star’s eyes with matte cranberry and apricot eye shadow shades (by Viseart) to match the rich shade of her dress and blended them into a smoky state. (As Ashley points out, “smoky doesn’t necessarily have to be blacks and grays — it’s the technique and blending rather than the colors used.”)

After contouring with the Laura Mercier Flawless Contour Palette, Ashley selected a matching cranberry hue for the star’s lips, which is actually the byproduct of many different shades. “Creating the perfect lip is never simple, she confessed. “I can sometimes use up to five different products.” But for this look, the makeup pro mixed together L.A. Girl Semi-Permanent Auto Lip Liner in Dark Plum with KIKO Precision Lip Liner #305 and added sheen with Girlactik Pout Shine in Stunning.

As for Andrews’ hair, she and her stylist Ryan Randall were up for trying something new. “I’ve always wanted to try slicking my hair back for the show,” she told PeopleStyle. “[Last night] we thought this was the right dress to do it with.”

RELATED PHOTOS: All the Latest Scoop on Dancing with the Stars

“Week after week, Erin has trusted us to deliver looks out of her comfort zone, and tonight’s look is no exception,” Randall told PeopleStyle. “We took an editorial approach with this wet, sleek and chic style. Red carpet worthy most definitely, with a nod to the Met Ball happening tonight in N.Y.C.”

The hair pro prepped Andrews’ wet hair with Bumble and bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Primer and blew it out, straight and off the face. To get the slick style, Randall re-wet the roots with the same primer spray and added a layer of Moco De Gorila gel for “an ultimate, set it and forget it” slicked-back style. He added slight texture to the back of the do with Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray as a finishing touch.

As for the final look? Andrews loved it — and even made a reference to a favorite supermodel vet. “I was joking around and said I felt like Christie Brinkley when she was filming the pool scene in National Lampoon’s Vacation, ‘So you gonna go for it?’”

Erin Andrews Dancing with the StarsCourtesy Erin Andrews

But in between shooting, Andrews said she was keeping tabs on the fashion happening on the East Coast (and playing with puppies!). “Backstage during the show we were looking at all the Met Ball photos, and we were laughing about how this was our West Coast version of it.”

Portrait Jewels: Opulence and Intimacy from the Medici to the Romanovs

Portrait Jewels: Opulence and Intimacy from the Medici to the Romanovs

From the Renaissance to the end of the Belle Epoque, cameo, intaglio, and miniature portraits, prized as representations of eminent people or treasured as images of the beloved, have been enriched by jeweled frames in order to wear them or display them as precious objects. Rulers from the Medici to the Romanovs commissioned portrait jewels. Dynasties represented here include the Valois and Bourbon in France; Bavarian, Habsburg, and Hanoverian in Germany, Central Europe, and Spain; Tudor, Stuart, and Hanoverian in Britain; and the House of Orange-Nassau in the Netherlands. Men and women famous in politics, religion, history, literature, and the arts, including Queen Elizabeth I, Louis XIV, Catherine the Great, Voltaire and Madame du Chatelet, Popes Clement XII and Pius VII, and Lord Byron are featured in this exquisite miniature gallery. The author draws upon her knowledge of jewelry, painting, history, and literature to set the portrait jewels in the context of people’s lives, and shows how they were worn and what they meant to donors and recipients-tokens of allegiance to a ruler, of commitment between lovers, of affection within families.

Gwen Stefani Wishes Her Divorce From Gavin Rossdale ‘Didn’t Happen’

Gwen Stefani opened up about her “unexpected” divorce from ex-husband Gavin Rossdale in yet another radio interview.

The “Used To Love You” singer was on “The Tommy Show” Wednesday morning and talked about her 13-year marriage, hinting at the cheating rumors that have been swirling around. Rossdale allegedly cheated with the family nanny for three years, according to Us Weekly.

“I feel like I go back and listen to a lot of that stuff, and I get sick,” said Stefani to the radio station. “You look at the song and you go ‘That was a red flag. That was a moment where I was feeling just as bad as I feel today and why did I keep it up?'”

Stefani and Rossdale filed for divorce in August after nearly 20 years of being together. They have three children, sons Kingston, 9, Zuma, 7, and Apollo, 1.

“I wish it didn’t happen, I wish that all of this wasn’t happening but at the same time, I feel like it was part of my life journey,” Stefani said on the radio show. “In my life I’ve had two really bad heartbreaks and I’ve written some incredible music out of it and I feel so lucky to have that and to be able to share it.”

Stefani has previously admitted that her new single, “Used To Love You,” was written during a time period when her life was crumbling.

“I had been writing because my life blew up,” the singer said during an interview with  KIIS FM’s JoJo Wright. ”Everybody knows that my life blew up last February. I’d just been dealing with that.”

Stefani has since moved on with fellow “Voice” coach and country singer, Blake Shelton.

Salome: From Femme Fatale to Political Heroine

2015-10-19-1445284513-9190024-salome.jpg

In hindsight, there were actually some advantages in growing up in the Bible Belt.
One of them was Sunday School where I gained an appreciation of the Good Book’s most notorious women: Bathsheba, Jezebel, and perhaps the precursor of all femme fatales, Salome, or the nameless stepdaughter of a powerful ruler who gets John the Baptist’s head on a platter, after performing a strip tease for the lascivious Herod.
Her story has always perplexed me, thanks to the famous Strauss opera and the Oscar Wilde play on which it was based.
But her story was never really her story.
She has always been an invention of sorts, a myth created by men, perhaps more interested in her sexual allure and titillating dance than her humanity.
I had the pleasure of seeing a new take on “Salome” at the Shakespeare Theatre Company here in Washington, a fitting start to their Women’s Voices Theater Festival.
Director Yael Farber has adapted the Wilde play into a first person narrative, finally giving Salome her own voice.
“Wilde tells us it had to do with sex, that Salome desired to kiss John the Baptist’s mouth. The scriptures tell us it was vengeance, which her mother Herodias sought against Herod, ” Farber explains.
“Women are still playing the vengeful harpy, in Hollywood, in everyday life. I could not be less interested in telling that story.”
The first voice we hear is of an aging Salome looking back on that famous night, when John the Baptist died, setting off a political firestorm, as revolutionaries, as John was, were of more use to the establishment in prison.
Salome is taken prisoner and interrogated about her role in John’s death, but we see her resolute, brazen, even as her captors taunt and abuse her.
In flashbacks, Salome becomes fascinated with John, not so much as an object of desire, but as a fellow prisoner of Herod. One is left with the impression that the two identify with each other, both courageous, but falling weak under Herod’s oppression.
She resists her stepfather’s sexual overtures, rather than manipulate them, in contrast to previous interpretations.
“I want to create the possibility that this woman, living under an occupying regime, came to a deep understanding of her selfhood, one that allowed her to drive forward a political agenda.”
We do see Salome naked, in a sensual scene is which her body is washed and clothed in slow motion by handmaidens, but the story’s innate sensuality was never a problem for Farber.
“I don’t want to shy away from the great danger of the feminine, from the notion of powerful sensuality attendant in this story. Women are dangerous. That’s the beautiful thing about us.”

“Salome” runs through November 8.

Conversations With Artists From the Past. Edvard Munch

2015-10-17-1445079904-7733978-Munch_Selfportrait_in_Front_of_the_House_Wall_1926_cropped.jpg

The galleries of the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum have recently opened an exhibition by artist Edvard Munch (1863-1944), successfully curated by Paloma Alarcó, that enables us to “listen to the dead with our eyes.” Paintings and writings come together in the museum’s galleries, divided into emotional Archetypes to communicate this artist’s obsessions from throughout his intense life.

People think that you can have a few friends, forgetting that the best, most authentic and above all, most numerous, are the dead. I intend to engage in a series of conversations with the afterlife. As the tormented spirit of the Norwegian artist has circumstantially settled in Madrid, I enthusiastically headed there to learn more.

2015-10-17-1445080022-7485050-deathinthesickroomedvardmunch.jpg

Elena Cué: Let’s start with your childhood.

Edvard Munch: I always felt like I was treated unfairly during my childhood. I inherited two of the worst enemies of mankind: tuberculosis and mental illness. Disease, insanity and death were black angels beside my crib. A mother who died early, planting me with the seed of tuberculosis. A hyper-nervous, pietistic father, religious to the point of being crazy, from an ancient lineage, planting me with the seeds of insanity.

When you think about those years, how did you feel?

The angels of fear, pain and death were beside me right from birth, going out to play with me, following me under the spring sun, in the splendor of summer. They were with me at night when I closed my eyes, threatening me with death, hell and eternal punishment. And I often woke at night and looked around the room with panicked eyes thinking “Am I in hell?”

The fear of death tormented me, and this fear harassed me through all of my youth.

Heaven and hell, how do you envisage eternity?

Flowers will emerge from my rotting body, and I will be part of them. That is eternity.

2015-10-17-1445080126-6740528-EdvardMunch.Madonna.18941.jpg

And where is God?

With fanatic faith in any religion, such as Christianity, came atheism, came fanatic faith in the existence of no God. And with this non-faith in God there was content, becoming a faith itself in the end. It is generally foolish to assert anything about what comes after death.

But what is it that gives strength to the Christian faith. There are many who have difficulty in believing it. Although one cannot believe that God is a man with a big beard, that Christ is the Son of God who became a man, or in the Holy Spirit formed by a dove, there is much truth in this idea. A God as the power that must be at the origin of all, a God that governs everything. We can say that he directs the light waves, the movement of the tides, the center of energy itself. The Son, the part of this energy that is in man, the immense energy that filled Christ. Divine energy, genius energy and the Holy Spirit. The most sublime thoughts sent by the sources of divine energy to the human radio stations. In the very depths of beings. That which is provided to every human being.

2015-10-17-1445080230-122285-friedrichnietzschemunch____.jpg

But what do you think death is?

Dying is as if the eyes have been switched off and cannot see anything else. Perhaps it’s like being locked in a basement. You are abandoned by all, they closed the door and left. You see nothing and only notice the humid smell of putrefaction.

And what about life?

I have been given a unique role to play on this earth that has given me a life of illness and also my profession as an artist. It is a life that does not contain anything resembling happiness, or even the desire for happiness.

Not even love?

Human destinies are like planets. Like a star that appears in the dark and meets another star, glistening in a moment, to then return, fading into obscurity. So as well, a man and a woman meet, they slide towards each other, shining in love, blazing, and then disappear, each one for himself. Only a few end up in a great blaze in which both can fully join.

The ancient were right when they said that love was a flame, as the flame leaves behind only a pile of ashes. Love can turn to hate, compassion to cruelty.

2015-10-17-1445080363-777789-munchashes1894.jpg

Jealously is closely linked with love, how would you describe it?

Jealous people have a mysterious look, many reflections focus in those two sharp eyes, like in a crystal. The look is exploratory, interested, full of love and hate, an essence of what we all have in common.

Jealousy says to its rival: go away, defective; you’re going to heat up in the fire that I have lit; you’ll breathe my breath in your mouth; you’ll soak up my blood and you will be my servant because my spirit will govern you through this woman who has become your heart.

Now let’s talk about art… where does it come from?

Art generally comes from the need of one human being to communicate with another. I do not believe that art has not been inflicted by the need for a person to open his heart. All art, literature as well as music, has to be generated with the deepest feelings. The deepest feelings are art.

What is the purpose of your art?

I have tried to explain life and the meaning of life through my art. I have also tried to help others clarify life. Art is the heart of blood.

We must no longer paint people reading or women knitting. In the future we must paint people who breathe, feel, suffer or love. As Leonardo da Vinci dissected corpses and studied the internal organs of the human body, I try to dissect the soul.

Conclusion.

My art is based on one single thought: why am I not like the others?

How do you think the audience should approach art?

The audience must become aware that the painting is sacred, so that it unfolds before them like in church.

2015-10-17-1445080441-9961211-el_grito_munch_7319_630x.jpg

One of your iconic paintings is The Scream, could you explain the origin of such a radical emotional expression?

I was walking along the road with two friends, the sun was setting. Suddenly the sky turned a bloody red. I stood, leaned on the fence feeling deathly tired. Over the blue-black fjord and city hung blood and tongues of fire. My friends walked on and I remained behind, shivering with anxiety. And I felt the immense infinite Scream in Nature.

Your love of photography is known, what do you think of photography as another mode of artistic expression?

The camera cannot compete with the brush and palette as long as it cannot be used in heaven and hell.

2015-10-17-1445080485-374375-EdvardMunchSelfportrai001.jpg

Where is the beauty in your art?

The emphasis on harmony and beauty in art is a waiver to be honest. It would be false to only look on the bright side of life.

Your writing has a strong aphoristic style. We’ll finish there…

Thought kills emotion and reinforces sensitivity. Wine kills sensitivity and reinforces emotion.

See Long-Lost Animation From ‘Monty Python And The Holy Grail’

And there was much rejoicing.

A video posted on Monty Python’s official YouTube channel this week shows 14 minutes of animation created by Terry Gilliam for the 1975 classic “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” that didn’t make it into the film.

The previously unseen clips will be included as bonus features in the upcoming 40th anniversary Blu-ray and DVD release. The video posted online features some narration by Gilliam, done in typical Python style:

“This in fact is probably the only reason to buy this new Blu-ray version of the film, for the new animation. In fact it’s old animation, but it’s the animation that was cut out by the rather envious members of the group who were trying to restrain a young and talented animator — a man who could have gone on to be a great animator, but no, he was forced into live-action filmmaking to cover the scars.”

Gilliam also talks about some of his influences and how the animations were created. He even takes a moment to launch a mock attack on the need for a re-release.

“All you’re seeing now is a little bit more clarity,” Gilliam said. “Which in the case of my cartoons is fascinating, because I never understood what they were about until we’ve been able to sit down and watch in high-definition exactly the work we did.”

He adds: ”Remember, I’m not getting paid for this commentary, so the low quality of the information you’re getting is a result of that.”

Check it out in the clip above.

The new edition of “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” will be released on Oct. 27, including one that comes in a castle package, which doubles as a catapult for firing rubber farm animals.

10 Moments From The ‘All That’ Reunion That Were All That

Ready yet? Get set. It’s the “All That” reunion!

It’s been more than 20 years since the show first aired on Nickelodeon, and even after all that time, ’80s and ’90s kids still have a special place in their hearts for “All That.” Now, thanks to Nickelodeon’s “The Splat,” ’90s shows are coming back every night on TeenNick, so, in honor of that, the show’s cast, Kel Mitchell, Lori Beth Denberg, Danny Tamberelli and Josh Server, all reunited at New York Comic Con on Saturday to make our dreams come true.

Awwww here it goes! Here are 10 of the best moments:

1. Kel says he and Kenan have talked about bringing back “Good Burger.”

Mitchell already told The Huffington Post he and Kenan are working together again, but now we have more details. After being asked whether there would be more “All That” or “Good Burger,” Kel said he and Kenan have been talking.

2. Kel and the cast turned up. And made a video to prove it.

A video posted by Kel Mitchell (@iamkelmitchell) on

During the panel they talked about old sketches, their favorite characters and even how the got on the show. So, yeah, they turned up.

3. We finally know what happened to the Big Ear of Corn.

The big ear of corn was a key cast member on “All That,” perhaps the most important one of all. And now we know Danny takes care of its corn babies.

4. About 10 minutes in, Kel says he still loves orange soda.

Josh Server is surprised it took this long to happen.

5. Ed (Kel) finally shared the secret of the Good Burger sauce to Lester Oaks Construction Worker (Kenan).

Kenan was at “SNL” but Kel still shared this video of the two discussing the secret sauce.

6. Lori Beth Denberg gave us some vital information.

Watch out for that warm apple juice, people.

7. The cast says their favorite guest stars were Chris Farley, Aaliyah, TLC, Sinbad and the Spice Girls.

No argument.

8. Lori Beth and Danny talked about their slime PTSD.

“You have very little traction with slime in your butt crack,” said Denberg.

9. The cast says Chris Farley once wrecked the set so he’d only have to do the scene once.

Josh Server says it was awesome.

10. Oh, and this happened:

It is the best day.

The Most Beloved Quotes from ‘The Princess Bride’ on its 28th Anniversary

On October 9, 1987, The Princess Bride debuted in theaters. Legendary scribe William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Marathon Man, All the President’s Men) adapted the screenplay from his novel of the same name.

It would take 14 years for the book to became a movie, but it was well worth the wait. Part comedy, part adventure, part fairy tale, part love story, director Rob Reiner assembled a dream team cast which included Billy Crystal, Mandy Patinkin, Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Wallace Shawn, Carol Kane, Chris Sarandon, Christopher Guest, Fred Savage, Peter Falk, Mel Smith and André the Giant.

Beloved by millions of fans (which includes Bill Clinton and and the late Pope John Paul II), the American Film Institute ranks The Princess Bride in the top 100 Greatest Love Stories. And the Writers Guild of America says that Goldman’s script is one of greatest 100 screenplays of all time. Many people can quote every last line. And Cary Elwes who played the dashing Westley wrote a revealing account of the making of the film in his book, As You Wish.

On the 28th anniversary of The Princess Bride‘s release celebrate with some deliciously quotable lines from the film. Besides, one can never geek out too much over this gem of a movie. Click to this Parade.com story to read them all.

The 10 Best Looks From Alexander Wang’s Last Collection for Balenciaga (Plus, Zoe Kravitz on the Runway)

The moment has come. Earlier this evening Alexander Wang took his last bow at Balenciaga as the house’s creative director. Wang’s final show was one of the most anticipated collections of the Paris Fashion Week spring 2016 season. But instead of going out with fireworks, the California-born Wang sent out a quietly exquisite collection of all-white clothes, set to a ’90s rap soundtrack of Notorious B.I.G.’s Going Back to Cali and Snoop Dogg’s Nuthin but a G Thang. The soundtrack alluded to his departure from Paris with this last Balenciaga show and that it’s back to the States for the New York-based designer.

While the collection was feminine and diaphanous from afar, a closer look will show you that subtle touches of Wang’s street style aesthetic are everywhere. Overalls in silk duchesse, flat mules in Chantilly lace, and drop crotch pants were interspersed between the siren gowns, for which the esteemed house of Balenciaga is known. Last, but certainly not least, Wang’s friend and supporter Zoe Kravitz took to the runway in a transparent lace dress in support of Wang’s big show.

And, in a touching final moment, the vivacious Wang took his biannual jaunt down the runway, skipping, running, twirling and taking selfies during a long and emotional bow. Here are our favorite looks from the collection:

Notes of a Retired Wedding Videographer: From Proposal to Reception; Lessons Learned from Brides and Grooms

Initially this book originated by way of a response to a reprehensible and professionally insulting article I stumbled across in a popular wedding magazine. I telephoned the editor and reviewed the article sentence by sentence with him regarding the inconsistencies and inaccuracies of a real-life wedding focusing specifically on the videography facet. By the end of our conversation, he asked me to commit these thoughts to paper for consideration and I did. The article with my amendments was first published in the Summer 2005 issue of Premier Bride Magazine. Inspired by this, I continued to expand and record my experiences and observations with the sole intent of offering an experienced, unique insight for all would-be newlyweds to consider. "Notes of a Retired Wedding Videographer" is intended to provide an entertaining and informative guide to help brides and grooms understand all that the camera captures throughout the wedding day as well as some frequently overlooked tips on how to ensure that the festivities recorded on video best capture the festivities occurring in live action at the time. Enjoy the most memorable insights based on actual first-hand experiences through the course of nearly 1000 completed wedding assignments during the last 11 years. Topics include observations and opinions regarding bridal logistics, wedding themes and color schemes, music/photographer/videographer selection, wedding within budget,7 tips for men in kilts, how to avoid becoming a victim of Murphy’s Law, and much more- all illustrated by real-life personal experiences from behind the camera.

Never one to take himself too seriously in the oh-so-serious work of high fashion, the designer presented his Moschino collection on Thursday in Milan in a makeshift carwash. No, that’s not a typo. Let the giggles ensue.

With the theme of carwashes and construction—think, hard hats, caution tape, and street signs—the hotly-anticipated collection ran the gamut from construction worker-inspired neon skirt suits, to colored car wash chamois-inspired fringes. Call it…Home Depot chic?

Seattle Shakespeare Company’s The Comedy of Errors; A Fun Filled, Slapstick Vision That Entertains From Start to Finish

Seattle Shakespeare Company recently premiered The Comedy of Errors at the Leo K Theatre, and the show kept the audience in stitches from beginning to end. I am not much of a Shakespeare fan, and I usually study the plot beforehand just so I can follow what’s going on.
2015-09-21-1442820553-8654740-ComedyofErrors.jpg
I do enjoy the poetry of the verse, but without doing any pre-play study, I generally find the plots confusing. Not so with this production of The Comedy of Errors. It was brilliantly done in a way even I could understand what was happening without any knowledge beforehand.

And I now have some sense of what my father must have seen when he was a young boy and had the opportunity to watch the Marx Brothers trying out their movies in live theater before they were actually filmed. This version of The Comedy of Errors was like a Marx Brothers show, filled with physical comedy and so much slapstick that I almost expected someone to get a pie in the face. That didn’t happen, but characters were constantly barging in and out doors, running around every inch of the stage and bouncing off each other like ping pong balls.

All of this was occurring while the actors articulated every word of the play with eloquence and bravado. The only issue (for diehard Shakespeare fans) was that the audience’s laughing often went on for so long that it drowned out parts of the actors’ dialogue.

All in all, this production of The Comedy of Errors is a truly entertaining adaptation well worth seeing at least once. The Comedy of Errors continues through October 11 at the Leo K. Theatre at Seattle Repertory Theatre.

Inside The School Where Children With HIV Find Refuge From Discrimination In China

Kun Kun, a young boy living with HIV, was banished from his village in China last year by residents who described him as a “ticking time bomb.” The case drew international attention to the severe discrimination faced by children with HIV in China.

Kun Kun has since found a new home, at the Green Harbor Red-Ribbon School in Linfen, China. The boarding school is a rare refuge for HIV-positive children in China, where infection rates are relatively low, but social stigma is high.

The school is the subject of an ambitious documentary project called “Children of the Harbor,” which is following the students’ passage through the boarding school until the first class graduates in 2017.

The project was conceived by Bryan Anker, a 27-year-old medical student originally from Los Angeles, who lived at the Green Harbor school in 2012 during an internship at the affiliated hospital.

“It broke my heart to learn that these children had been shunned by society all of their lives,” Anker told The WorldPost by email. ”The level of awareness these children possess is mind-boggling. They fully comprehend their current situation and are well aware of how society perceives them.”

Anker and his small team of filmmakers, including Myanmar-based photographer, journalist and cinematographer Ann Wang, started to document the students’ lives in December and plan to follow their stories through graduation. “We want to film up to this point and see what road the students take after graduation. Will they go to university? Will they return home? Will they find a job?” Anker said.

“These children are smart and resilient, and some of them have thought up intricate plans for escaping the HIV stigma in China,” he told The WorldPost.

The school was set up in 2006, and is home to around 30 children and teenagers with HIV, ranging in age from 6 years old to 19.  The students have “very complicated feelings … about themselves, about the school and about the disease they’ve been carrying since birth,” Wang told The WorldPost by email.

Many of them are the children of patients being treated for HIV/AIDS at the affiliated Linfen Infectious Disease Hospital; others have been orphaned by AIDS or thrown out of their schools and local communities due to stigma.

This is a pervasive problem for children with HIV in China. “If their HIV status has been disclosed, it’s very common that parents of other children complain to the school and force the school to separate their children from HIV positive children,” Xu Wenqing, an HIV/AIDS specialist at UNICEF China, told The WorldPost by email.

Nearly 10,000 children in China live with HIV/AIDS, among some 500,000 reported cases in the country. (Experts estimate the total number of cases, including those undiagnosed, may be around 800,000.) This is relatively low compared to countries like the U.S., which has a population a quarter of the size of China’s, and an estimated 1.2 million HIV/AIDS cases among people 13 or older.

Yet discrimination is widespread, and affects old and young alike in China. Advocates say people known to be HIV-positive are often barred from attending collge or refused public and private-sector jobs. The main problem is a lack of information about HIV/AIDS, including how it is transmitted and treated. Experts point to China’s poor sexual health education and the ongoing repetition of myths about HIV by public officials.

China’s leaders have made a high-profile effort to combat this prejudice in recent years, as well as stepping up free treatment for AIDS patients and measures to prevent mothers from passing on HIV to their newborn children. In 2006, a new law banned discrimination against people living with HIV, although it has been difficult to enforce. On World AIDS Day last year, China’s first lady Peng Liyuan released a music video with the students of Green Harbor-Red Ribbon School, urging an end to the stigma they face.

Anker hopes that telling the stories of the children at Green Harbor can convince more people to leave their prejudices behind.

“I believe the children’s stories are so poignant, and their personalities so radiant, that our viewers won’t have any choice but to empathize with their situation,” he said.

To learn more about the media project and support the documentary, go to the Children of the Harbor website.

Live from Toronto Film Festival: Sunday Sept. 13

2015-09-14-1442199796-6299896-trumbo.jpg

The Toronto International Film Festival, in its 40th year, is, at this point, North America’s largest, sprawling across this massive city with more than 300 films vying for the attention of the public and the press.

I’ve been attending this festival since 1984 – which would seem like a lot to me, had I not been in the audience to see Barbara Kopple’s moving and uplifting new documentary, Miss Sharon Jones! As the film was introduced, the programmer doing the introduction pointed out that Kopple was one of three filmmakers with work in this festival who also had films in the very first Toronto festival: her 1976 documentary, Harlan County USA, which went on to win Kopple the first of her two Oscars.

I have fond memories of films I saw here for the first time. In that first year, for example, I caught the Coen brothers’ debut, Blood Simple, as well as Places in the Heart and Steve Martin’s All of Me.

This year’s edition will be remembered for putting both Jay Roach’s Trumbo and James Vanderbilt’s Truth in contention for the Oscar race. I saw the two films back to back on Sunday – and they are guaranteed to both grip you and infuriate you, because of the way they resonate with the political situation we find ourselves in (and to which we doomed ourselves in 2004).

Truth stars Cate Blanchett as Mary Mapes, a journalist and producer for 60 Minutes who, in 2004, came across what seemed to be evidence that then-President George W. Bush, who was seeking reelection, had received preferential treatment to get into the Texas National Guard (and avoid being sent to Vietnam), then essentially skated on the last couple of years of his guard duty, again thanks to pulled strings. But Mapes was the victim of forged documents and looming deadlines; while she had the story right, she and her boss, Dan Rather (played with canny folksiness by Robert Redford), both took the fall for the doctored documents.

The Mapes story itself is more than a decade old, but the problems it represents remain fresh. While Mapes and Rather made mistakes, they were hung out to dry by both CBS (more concerned about profits than seeking the truth) and the rest of the media. CBS’ competitors seemed obsessed with bringing down CBS, rather than pursuing the substance of the story itself: that Bush, in all likelihood, had used his connections to avoid Vietnam, then used them again to skip out on a lot of duty.

As Vanderbilt’s film points out, CBS (and Viacom) were basically afraid of antagonizing the Bush White House – which used its mastery of misdirection and strong (but inaccurate) messaging. Blanchett captures the frustration of Mapes, a hard-charging journalist who finds that she’s been turned into the story, in order to discredit her efforts on the real story.

Blanchett is already being touted for an Oscar for her work in the upcoming “Carol,” but this performance – tough, smart, vulnerable — may also make her a contender. She has strong support from Redford, as well as Dennis Quaid, Elisabeth Moss and Topher Grace, as her investigative team. Truth is a film guaranteed to reignite this controversy and, perhaps, finally bring the truth out into the open.

Jay Roach’s Trumbo is equally good at making the blood boil.

Of Thee I Zing: America's Cultural Decline from Muffin Tops to Body Shots

Of Thee I Zing: America's Cultural Decline from Muffin Tops to Body Shots

My culture is depraved, Not sure it can be saved . . . Of Thee I Zing. Land filled with STDs, Pants way down to the knees, Nary a “thanks” or “please” This is going to sting. . . . While Laura Ingraham was walking through a Northern Virginia shopping mall one Saturday afternoon, it all became clear to her: Our country is in grave peril. Our culture of ignorance, arrogance, and gluttony undermines our present and endangers our future. Everywhere she turned, she saw signs of the impending disaster: zombie teens texting each other across a café table; a man having his eyebrows threaded at a kiosk; a fiftyish woman shoehorned into a tube top and skinny jeans; and a storefront ad featuring a Victoria’s Secret model spilling out of her push-up bra and into the faces of young passersby. Ingraham wondered, “Is this it? Is this what our forefathers fought for? What my parents struggled for? I wonder if Victoria’s Secret is still having that two-for-one sale?” In an act of patriotic intervention, the most-listened-to woman in talk radio casts her satirical eye upon all that ails American society. In this sharp-witted comic romp, Laura Ingraham takes you on a guided tour through ten levels of our cultural hell. You know we’re in trouble when . . . Airplane seats shrink—just as the passengers expand. Celebrity baby names go from the peculiar (Apple, Stetson, and Daisy Boo) to the pathetic (Bamboo, Blanket, and Bronx). People meticulously tend their virtual crops on Farmville, while their children eat takeout. “Breaking News” usually means it happened yesterday. The weddings last longer than the marriages. Facebook has become a verb and reading has become an ancient art form. Of Thee I Zing is cultural commentary too funny to ignore, igniting a national conversation long past due. America, your cultural recovery begins here.

Why Pour Cereal From The Box When You Can Do It With A Crane?

Mornings are hard. You don’t want to get out of bed, but you have to pee. You don’t want to put on clothes, but you can’t go to work naked. You don’t want to pick up the box, but you have to eat your cereal.

Turns out that last one can be avoided if you have a cereal-serving crane head device to scoop your breakfast for you.

This keppie crane, built by designer and artist Dominic Wilcox, transfers dry cereal from box to bowl with a couple of joysticks. It looks cool, for sure, and the idea of getting to use it might actually propel you out of bed. It even pours the milk for you, so your gentle, freshly woken hands don’t have to be burdened.

Wilcox was commissioned by Kellogg’s to manufacture the design along with six other silly “Brek Tech” ideas including a “soggy-o-meter” cereal sogginess timer, a robot spoon, and a device that amplifies the sounds of cereal’s snaps, crackles, and pops. While the breakfast crane isn’t heading for mass production, we sure wish it were. Watch it in action the full video below.

Expert Styling Tips for Curvy Girls From Superstar Blogger Gabi Fresh

If you’re not one of the nearly 250,000 people following plus-size blogger Gabi Gregg on Instagram, you are seriously missing out. A quick scroll through her feed offers up scores of killer outfits, glimpses of her enviable girl gang, and insiders-only behind-the-scenes photos.

But before she had gazillions of followers, Gregg was just a fashion-savvy college grad who was frustrated with the lack of clothing for young (and trendy!) plus-size women. So she started talking about it. In 2008, she launched Young Fat & Fabulous a blog about her personal style journey (it was later transformed into Gabi Fresh). In just over five years Gabi Fresh is a runaway success and Gregg has become major influence in the curvy style revolution. She’s gone from reviewing collections to modeling in their look books—and this fall, she’s showing off ASOS Curve’s latest collection. (Some of our favorite looks are pictured below!)

Here, Glamour talked to the barrier-breaking blogger about the brand, her shopping tips, and why you need to work on your self-esteem before hitting the mall.

Gabi-Fresh-ASOS-1

Glamour: What was it like to shoot an ASOS look book after being a fan of the brand for so many years?
Gabi Gregg: I’ve been a fan—and customer—of ASOS since they first launched their curve line about five years ago. They’re one of the places I shop the most often. I literally get ASOS packages to my door every month. I think one of the reasons the lookbook has gone so viral is because it was such a natural fit between the blogger and the brand—and that doesn’t always happen. The images came out looking editorial, like any other fashion-forward brand. It didn’t feel catalogue or commercial—the way a lot of plus-size brands tend to feel.

Glamour: How else do you think the collection stands out in a less-than-impressive plus-size market?
GG: They’re definitely pushing the envelope when it comes to fashion-forward, trend-focused plus-size clothing. They don’t just do a basic black dress, they do a cool sequin cape. We see so many brands that don’t do that in plus-sizes—even if they have trendy straight-size lines, the plus-size section is watered down. Most brands are constantly saying, “Plus-size girls don’t want that [product].” So it’s great to see a brand doing the same thing in both their divisions.

Glamour: What are your favorite pieces from the collection?
GG: I love the sequin cape, the yellow suede skirt, the fur coat, and the black dress. It’s hard to pick favorites! Overall, I was happy to how many amazing, on-trend statement pieces there are. Unfortunately, plus-size clothing is often left behind on trends. If we even get them, often times trends are a season or two late, so it was great to see that this is right on time.

Gabi-Fresh-ASOS-2

Glamour: What are your other must-haves for fall?
GG: I’m really into flared jeans right now. Faux-fur coats, suede skirts and dresses, and turtlenecks are my other must-buy pieces this season.

Glamour: How often do you tailor your clothes? What are some of your signature adjustments?
GG: I encourage everyone to get their clothes tailored. Everyone fits things differently—especially when it comes to plus-sizes because everyone carries their weight differently. People don’t realize that the bloggers and celebrities they see looking amazing in clothing got it custom tailored. They think there’s something wrong with their body when, in fact, they can get the clothes changed.

The number one thing I tailor is my pants: I get the legs taken in. A lot of time, if something fits my hips and my butt it’s too baggy between the knee and the ankle, so I get them tapered. I also hem my skirts. If it’s a midi skirt, I bring the hem up from the mid-calf to hit just below the knee.

Glamour: Any other tips for getting the best fit out of your clothing?
GG: I think girls are scared to deviate from the size they usually are. When it comes to fit I try everything. I’m not against wearing clothes that aren’t my ‘size’ on the tag. If I see a dress, like a cool utility dress, I know it will look best fitting over-sized so I order it two sizes up. If I want a body-con dress to fit skin-tight, I almost always order it two sizes small. Think about how the piece should fit and adjust what size you buy accordingly.

Gabi-Fresh-ASOS-5

Glamour: How can we master the art of e-shopping?
GG: I shop different sites differently and part of that is just getting used to shopping there. I know it sucks, but you have to learn how things fit and what works. Sometimes, on the same site I’ll range in size from 14 to 22 depending on the cut of the piece. My cart is always four different sizes!

I also love eBay. I search every iteration of whatever item I want. I may search ‘plus-size romper’ and then ‘romper XXL’ because it might not be tagged with plus-size. If I ever love a trend and wish it was made in my size, I go on eBay and search the trend with ‘XXL’ or ‘plus-size’ and I always get a result.

Glamour: Which style crushes of yours should everyone be following on Instagram?
GG: I love Solange Knowles (@saintrecords), Karla Deras (@karla_deras)—she’s probably my favorite—Nadia Aboulhosn (@nadiaaboulhosn), Nicolette Mason (@nicolettemason), and Amber Riley (@msamberpriley).

Glamour: What final piece of style advice do you want to give to our readers?
GG: Work on your self-esteem first—especially if you’re plus-size. Find a community and surround yourself with other women who have similar body types to you. You won’t feel like you’re ‘different’ or the odd one out. A lot of the time, that’s what’s holding people back from making that jump into fashion-forward dressing. They don’t feel confident enough or don’t feel like they look good enough. Once you work on your self-esteem and feel good in your body, you’re way more likely to shop more and have fun with clothing.

Michael Jordan’s Tune Squad Uniform From ‘Space Jam’ Is Hitting The Auction Block

Michael Jordan’s most important uniform — you know, the one he wore while saving the earth — is hitting the auction block this fall.

Starting on Oct. 1, fans of Jordan and the 1996 sports entertainment classic “Space Jam” can bid on the actual Tune Squad uniform Jordan wore during the making of the movie. Despite there being “signs of wear” and “minor staining” on the uniform, it’ll be available for bidding through online auction house Invaluable via Los Angeles-based auction house Profiles In History.

Invaluable estimates the price to fall between $ 10,000 (the starting bid) and $ 15,000, but in the past, Jordan memorabilia has been auctioned off for upwards of $ 100,000

Think you can afford it?

4 Office Fashion Rules From a Woman Who’s Dressed Kate Middleton

When it comes to a model for polished, proper, and utterly professional dressing, you can’t find a better example than Kate Middleton. Her position as a royal and obligatory outings require sophisticated, elegant looks, but it’s also a style vibe that seems pretty ingrained in her style DNA. And while the Duchess reps many designers you’ve heard of (think her customized Tory Burch, the Stuart Weitzman wedges the queen can’t stand, and that Alexander McQueen dress), she’s also shown off a few British labels that have been a little more undercover until now.

kate-middleton-goat-red-dress

Kate in a Goat dress last year

Goat has been once such case, with designer Jane Lewis offering up chic understated styles that the Duchess seems to love. Up until now it had been relatively tricky to find the brand in the U.S. but that’s recently changed, with the announcement that the label would begin selling at Saks Fifth Avenue. When we got the chance to talk with Lewis about how easy it is to translate Kate’s style into savvy everywoman office outfits, we knew we owed it to everyone who gets a pay stub.

“There’s been an underlying belief that fashion had no place within the corporate environment and that it could diminish our credibility in some way,” she explained. “Fashion doesn’t have to be frivolous. Style is innate in each of us, and it’s what sets us apart from the generic. A working environment is as good a place as any to show off your personality.”

Rule 1: Think about your workplace.
What works at your friend’s office might not fly at yours, and understanding that is key. “Assess your environment and your requirements. Be honest with yourself and audit trends as appropriate,” Lewis said. Once you’ve figured out the essentials that make a stellar outfit for your field of work, invest in some key basics. “They’ll become the foundation of an edited yet versatile working wardrobe.”

Rule 2: Don’t be afraid of color.
“It can be empowering and feminine and is an excellent way to tap into a current trend,” she said, insisting that even the color-averse can experiment with shades other than black and navy. “Mid colors like burgundy, fern green, and dark teal are what I call ‘noncolors’ that are good for people who may feel overwhelmed by strong brights.”

Rule 3: Rely on accessories to update and upgrade.
To inject some new life into office fashion made up of dependable building blocks, add statement jewelry or standout shoes. “One feature accent is enough to update an outfit,” Lewis instructed, specifying that one is indeed the magic number. “One thing at a time is enough. Discretion can make a powerful impression and have enormous impact.” Consider a large cuff bracelet with shortened sleeves that show it off, a belt with color or print, or a pair of playful shoes that peek out from underneath your trousers.

Rule 4: Stay comfortable.
Because, really, what’s the good of all these guidelines if you’re squirming and fidgeting? “Don’t underestimate the confidence and elegance comfort lends you. It’s the foundation of dressing well for your environment.” Ban uncomfortable cuts, pieces you’re always tugging at, and ouch-worthy heels from the office.

Kate in Goat’s Redgrave coat, the first piece she ever wore from the label

When you read her suggestions with Kate in mind, it totally clicks into place that, yup, they’re all lessons that the Duchess has learned and applied. And about that famous mum of two? Lewis is much like any of the other designers Kate’s worn, completely unaware that the royal will be stepping out in one of her pieces (maybe because she’s shopping online?)

“It was a lovely surprise and great honor,” Lewis remembered about the time she first saw Kate in Goat (she seems to be especially fond of the label’s classic, tailored coats).

The Trump Monster from the GOP’s Id

Who remembers the 1956 science fiction classic, Academy Award-nominated film, Forbidden Planet, featuring the likes of Walter Pidgeon and Robby the Robot? To the sci-fi aficionado, it was in a league of its own and according to Gene Roddenberry an inspiration for the Star Trek franchise.

Do you remember the monster in this film? Of horrible appearance and temperament, his shape only appeared as an outline as he moved against powerful “disintegrator beams.” He was unstoppable and vanished only when the Walter Pidgeon character finally died.

Our heroes came upon a planet with an extraordinarily advanced civilization that mysteriously disappeared without a scratch 200,000 years earlier, with all its advanced machines still working. The crew couldn’t figure out what became of it, until the invisible monster began manifesting himself to them.

Having juiced up his brain to the max using the ancient civilization’s brain-enhancing machine, a crew member reveals his discovery just before dying from the procedure: “It’s monsters from the Id!” he proclaims.

Well, one way to look at the circus on the Republican side of the emerging presidential election campaign is to think of it in Forbidden Planet terms: yes, a “monster from the Id” has returned. Donald Trump represents the collective unconsciousness of what has become of the Republican Party. Like the monster in the film, he is threatening to destroy everything in his path.

The “Id” in Latin means the “It.” The construct was conceived by the psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, and was called the “shadow” by Carl Jung, who extended its application to the notion of “collective unconsciousness” of an entire culture.

The point here is that Donald Trump does not stand apart from his many opponents seeking the Republican presidential nomination. On the contrary, he is their collective unconsciousness. Everything he stands for is what today’s Tea Party-infused Republican Party has become.

Scratch Jeb Bush, scratch Lindsey Graham, or Marco Rubio, or Scott Walker, get them a little pissed, and they all come out raging and whining like little Donald Trumps. On policy issues, like immigration, woman’s health, deregulation of Wall Street, screwing the 99 percent in deference to the one percent of the wealthiest, and perpetual war in the Middle East, they’re all virtually identical. They’re all their own Donald Trump nightmare.

When they wake up and look the menacing Donald Trump monster in the face, they see themselves. While they’re railing against Trump’s manner and his seeming relentless intent to bully and insult just about everybody, they must see that they are he and vice-versa. He is their collective Id raging away.

The Id, as the experts explain, is a psychological construct that corresponds to the raging state of consciousness of the newborn, the elementary basis of the subconscious mind that seeks only instant gratification without regard for anything else. It represents the “tendency to seek immediate gratification of any impulse.” It “knows no good or evil, has no morality.” It is composed of a ” set of uncoordinated instinctual trends,” a “cauldron full of seething expectations,” and so on. All very Donald Trump.

Insofar as Donald Trump is this collective Id of the current Republican Party, there is no way his opponents can make him go away. The more they attack him, the more they energize him. They are stuck with him.

So, like the dystopian, doomsday themes of so much science fiction these days, that Forbidden Planet took to the highest level by positing the more advanced a population becomes the more the seeds of its own destruction are empowered in its collective unconsciousness, the outcome for the present Republican Party is dim. As it cannot contain its raging collective Id, Donald Trump will not be going away.

The only way to alter this inevitability would be for one or more of the GOP candidates to begin repudiating the content of their collective mindset. Who’s going to stake their campaign on reasonable alternatives to the GOP madness? Does anyone have the courage, the moral suasion? Otherwise, it will be left to someone from beyond their collective walls to surely do it.

The Picassos are Here!: A Retrospective from Basel Collections

The public reception of Pablo Picasso’s (1881-1973) art is inextricably bound up with the early support of his first collectors-men such as Raoul La Roche, Rudolf Staechelin, Karl Im Obersteg and Maja Sacher-Stehlin, who were buying his work from c. 1918 on-as well as the Basel art historians Georg Schmidt and Christian Geelhaar, who were among the first to recognize the role Picasso would play in twentieth-century art. This publication accompanies a large-scale retrospective of the artist’s work, the first to unite the collections of the Kunstmuseum Basel and the Fondation Beyeler, assembled with donations from the private collections of the above patrons. “The Picassos Are Here ” allows us to perceive astonishing correlations between the artist’s many periods, from the “Blue Period” to Cubism and the Surrealist-influenced paintings of the 1930s, to the postwar and late works.

Skillfully weaving together everything from court and formal costumes through to the working attire of the lower classes and the latest fashions of New China, “Chinese Dress” tells the story of the evolution of Chinese clothing. The first section details attire worn during the Qing dynasty by the emperors and their consorts, as well as the mandarins, merchants, and their womenfolk, both Manchu and Chinese. The following sections pay particular attention to the dramatic changes in clothing that took place in China from the Republican period, including rural dress and children’s wear, through to dress in New China from 1949 to the present day. An engaging and original text, Chinese Dress is the essential reference for costume historians, fashion designers and collectors, as well as lovers of beautiful clothes everywhere.

From Nirvana to GG Allin, Flipside’s Krk Dominguez Photographed Post-Hardcore in L.A.

Like all vital, dynamic art movements throughout history, punk rock suffered from the high bar set by the earliest proponents of the movement. By 1980, no punk band in England could ever hope to match what the Sex Pistols and Clash had done and likewise in Los Angeles, the Germs and Black Flag were high water marks of the genre that few in the mid to late 1980s could reach.

As it was for the bands in L.A., so too was it for the photographers on the scene. The footsteps of the great Ed Colver were impossible to fill. With the lion’s share of the iconic shots hoarded by that one talent, few could imagine that an artistic record of the ongoing movement would make for a compelling art exhibit.

And yet, almost thirty years after he began, Krk Dominguez has delivered a reminder that there was life after “Damaged” in the clubs and bars and that documenting it in the shadow of a giant allowed him to find his own artistic voice. Hanging floor to ceiling, the over-poster-sized photo editions are printed on thick paper and feature glimpses into bygone moments of beer, sweat, anarchy and the culture of suburban American nonconformity made manifest.

The bands that came after punk’s first wave knew they were not foraging new territory and that created a hunger to push any edge they ever happened upon. At L.A.’s Lethal Amounts Gallery, Dominguez presented “More Than A Witness,” his solo exhibit documenting thirty years of photographing punk and alternative performances. Dominguez casts a wide umbrella to describe the scene he covered: Post-Hardcore. The Post-Hardcore scene broke from many orthodoxies that had strangled the creative energy out of punk. Long hair, the last taboo of original punk, seems the trademark at times in these pictures. Bands suddenly didn’t give a shit to admit they liked Black Sabbath as much or more than they liked Fear or Bad Religion. The Post-Hardcore scene welcomed many touring acts through Los Angeles, returning the favor that many early L.A. greats had done small scenes nationwide in relentless touring across the country.

Post Hardcore was good at finding the edges and Krk’s camera found its chief purveyors heading straight toward the cliff. The glazed eyes of GG Allin stare into oblivion in the show’s artiest indulgence, a wall installation triptych that repeats the same photo of Allin once on a car hood and twice on more traditional rectangular surfaces. The patron saint of self-destruction holds center court, but look above – a proof sheet blowup of Nirvana playing to twenty people on a bill they shared with bands like Claw Hammer at Downtown L.A.’s Al’s Bar in 1989. The installation seems to imply that while Allin did himself in quite spectacularly, Kurt Cobain was ultimately no less self-destructive when he committed suicide.

Nirvana pops up a lot here, with the legendary Claw Hammer co-bill show and hanging out at Raji’s two years before fame would strike, pre-Dave Grohl. Nirvana’s “Grunge” label belies them as the ultimate purveyors of a Post-Hardcore sound that fearlessly played verses slower than the punk thrash standard and then blew out all cylinders in sheer intensity on choruses. Yes, they were the band that “won it all” and in true punk fashion, threw it all away. And Krk was there when they were just one more band to shoot and interview for the pages of Flipside, L.A.’s longest-running punk zine.

Photographer Krk Dominguez at the mid-August opening reception for his solo show “More Than A Witness: Post-Hardcore and Beyond 1985-2015.” Lethal Amounts Gallery, Downtown Los Angeles.

The motto of founder Al Flipside: “Be more than a witness,” is a maxim Dominguez took in earnest. We are treated to a chaotic stage shot of Savage Republic that blurs where the band ends and the crowd begins. GWAR in all of their costumed glory are still the furthest thing from quaint over 25 years after Krk shot them in what appears to be a nightclub parking lot. Fugazi, the Dwarves, the Melvins – it all starts to blur in an installation that packs in large prints with no concept of what a minimal hanging might even look like. And were proper gallery centerline hanging instructions given, well, El Duce, of the Mentors, has a time-honored one-finger salute to cure you of any illusions of artsy seriousness or nostalgia for a simpler time.

Not illustrated. 1915 edition. Excerpt: … TREASURE CHAPTER I THE WISE MAN AND THE FOOt THERE is no justification for the idea that cousins ought to have similar tastes and aspirations any more than that they ought to be alike in form and feature. And yet when people were told that George Harvey and Thomas Ewins were cousins they would generally say: "What! Those two cousins! Well! Who would have thought it!" Certainly the cousins had a few things in common: they had no other near relatives and they lived together, sharing the same joint, the same dish of vegetables, the same pudding, the same loaf, the same domestic et ceteras, provided by Mrs. Bowers. They did not, however, share the same philosophy. They did not often discuss it–as philosophy. But every now and then they raised voices in scorn, each finely overflowing with contempt for the other. They had both had to make their way in life as they had been left fatherless at a tender age, and had sown and reaped for themselves almost from the early teens. Harvey was a printer and for some few years past had managed the business formerly belonging to Edward Gollam, but now the sole property of his sorrowful and not well-to-do widow. When Mr. Gollam died and left his widow with four girls and a printing business, Ewins told his cousin to ask for a partnership, or start printing on his own account. But Mrs. Gollam wondered so pathetically how she "could manage with four girls; if one had been a boy it would have been different, particularly if he had been old enough to step in his father's shoes, but girls . . . and how could she manage a business that she knew nothing of?" And when a woman (or man for that matter) looked pathetically helpless George Harvey was always touched. It was quite true that George Harvey might have made…

Of Thee I Zing: America's Cultural Decline from Muffin Tops to Body Shots

Of Thee I Zing: America's Cultural Decline from Muffin Tops to Body Shots

While Laura Ingraham was walking through a Northern Virginia shopping mall one Saturday afternoon, it all became clear to her. Everywhere she turned, she saw signs of the impending disaster: zombie teens texting each other across a café table; a man having his eyebrows threaded at a kiosk; a fiftyish woman shoe-horned into a tube top and skinny jeans; and a storefront ad featuring a Victoria’s Secret model spilling out of her push-up bra and into the faces of young passersby. Ingraham wondered to herself, “Is this it? Is this what our forefathers fought for? What my parents struggled for? I wonder if Victoria’s Secret is still having that two-for-one sale?” A menacing force surrounds us. We see it, we feel it, we know it. The country we love is in grave peril. While politicians and “experts” prattle on about the debt crisis at home, and terrorism abroad, a more insidious homegrown threat is emerging. It endangers our future and undermines our present. The uncomfortable truth is: We have become our own worst enemy. The culture we have created is now turning on us. We’re on the verge of drowning in our ignorance, arrogance, gluttony . . . can you believe there are only three shots of vanilla in a Caramel Macchiato?!? Now in an act of patriotic intervention the most-listened-to woman in talk radio casts her satirical eye upon all that ails American society. In this sharp-witted, comic romp, Laura Ingraham takes you on a guided tour through ten levels of our cultural hell. You know we’re in trouble when . . . • Airplane seats shrink—just as the passengers expand. • Celebrity baby names go from the peculiar (Apple, Stetson, and Daisy Boo) to the pathetic (Bamboo, Blanket, and Bronx). • People meticulously tend their virtual crops on Farmville, while their children eat takeout. • “Breaking News” usually means it happened yesterday. • The weddings last longer than the marriages. • Facebook has become a verb and reading has become an ancient art form. Of Thee I Zing is cultural commentary too funny to ignore, igniting a national conversation long past due. America, your cultural recovery begins here.

Trend-Right Men’s Lines From the Las Vegas Trade Shows

The men’s market is in a relaxed mood.
With sales picking up in the second half and some popular items for fall already emerging, retailers shopping the trade shows in Las Vegas were feeling little stress.
Adding to the optimism were the spring fashion trends of colorful swimwear, comfortable ath-leisurewear and nautical influences in everything from outerwear to accessories. The marriage of function and fashion was also a key market mover, with merchants embracing utilitarian detailing in garments that also sported performance attributes.

“Men’s fashion moves at a glacial pace,” said Patty Leto, senior vice president of merchandising for the Doneger Group. But that pace is quickening as the male consumers’ desire for fashion heats up, she added. Driving the men’s wear acceleration, she said, was the influence of beachwear, ath-leisure and the continued demand for performance.
Key volume drivers for the season, according to the Doneger team, include graphic Ts, printed tank tops, unconstructed sport coats, flat-front shorts, joggers, true activewear and printed swimwear.
Tommy Fazio, president of Project, said the two biggest categories at this market were swimwear and the “whole California lifestyle. Those are the big growth opportunities.”

The Real Donald: Excerpts From Trump’s Books On Women, Marriage, Sex And More

Before he jumped into the presidential race and the media frenzy that comes with it, real estate mogul Donald Trump preferred to communicate with the American people via a more intimate medium — the simple written word.

The Huffington Post has reviewed nearly a dozen books by and/or about Trump, including one by John O’Donnell, a former executive in Trump’s business empire, and one by Tim O’Brien, a longtime journalist and former HuffPost editor. Reading through these works, which go back a full 25 years, one gets a better sense of the businessman’s macho persona, his taste for extravagance, his views about women and his rise to the top of the New York City social scene. All quotes are Trump’s words except where noted otherwise.

On marriage

“A good marriage is like negotiating an important deal: You have to consider all the factors, thoughtfully and thoroughly. If you were investing a large part of yourself and your fortune into a venture, believe me, you’d make sure you thought about it for a long time first. That’s how I see marriage. It’s serious, and it’s important. I don’t approach it any more haphazardly than I do a very important deal. In fact, considering the amount of deals I’ve made compared to the number of marriages I’ve had, I’d say I’m quite cautious about marriage. You should be, too.” (Think Like A Billionaire, Donald Trump with Meredith McIver, 2005)

*

“For a man to be successful he needs support at home, just like my father had from my mother, not someone who is always griping and bitching. When a man has to endure a woman who is not supportive and complains constantly about his not being home enough or not being attentive enough, he will not be very successful unless he is unable to cut the cord.” (The Art of the Comeback, Donald Trump with Kate Bohner, 1997)

“If he doesn’t lose the ballbreaker, his career will go nowhere.” (The Art of the Comeback

On prenuptial agreements

“There are basically three types of women and reactions. One is the good woman who very much loves her future husband, solely for himself, but refuses to sign the agreement on principle. I fully understand this, but the man should take a pass anyway and find someone else.” (The Art of the Comeback)

On women

“I was always of the opinion that aggression, sex drive, and everything that goes along with it was on the man’s part of the table, not the woman’s. As I grew older and witnessed life firsthand from a front-row seat at the great clubs, social events, and parties of the world — I have seen just about everything — I began to realize that women are far stronger than men. Their sex drive makes us look like babies. Some women try to portray themselves as being of the weaker sex, but don’t believe it for a minute.” (The Art of the Comeback)

*

“I remember attending a magnificent dinner being given by one of the most admired people in the world. I was seated next to a lady of great social pedigree and wealth. Her husband was sitting on the other side of the table, and we were having a very nice but extremely straight conversation. All of a sudden I felt her hand on my knee, then on my leg. She started petting me in all different ways. I looked at her and asked, ‘Is everything alright?’ I didn’t want to make a scene in a ballroom full of five hundred VIPs. The amazing part about her was who she was — one of the biggest of the big. She then asked me to dance, and I accepted. While we were dancing she became very aggressive, and I said, ‘Look, we have a problem. Your husband is sitting at that table, and so is my wife.’

‘Donald,’ she said, ‘I don’t care. I just don’t care. I have to have you, and I have to have you now.’ I told her that I’d call her, but she had to stop the behavior immediately. She made me promise, and I did. When I called I just called to say hello, and that was the end of that. But the level of aggression was unbelievable.” (The Art of the Comeback)

*

“One woman, who was socially prominent, was getting married, and I had bumped into her on Fifth Avenue while she was exchanging wedding gifts. I had my limousine nearby, and she asked if I could give her a ride back to her apartment on Park Avenue. I said absolutely, not even suspecting that within five seconds after the door closed she would be jumping on top of me wanting to get screwed. I said, ‘You’re getting married next week, and I’m going to your wedding.’

‘I don’t really care,’ she said. ‘ I never liked him that much anyway, and you know that.’ I was really in a quandary, because she is a truly great-looking and sexy woman.” (The Art of the Comeback)

*

“Women have one of the great acts of all time. The smart ones act very feminine and needy, but inside they are real killers. The person who came up with the expression ‘the weaker sex’ was either very naive or had to be kidding. I have seen women manipulate men with just a twitch of their eye — or perhaps another body part.” (The Art of the Comeback)

*

“There’s nothing I love more than women, but they’re really a lot different than portrayed. They are far worse than men, far more aggressive, and boy, can they be smart.” (The Art of the Comeback)

*

“I don’t know why, but I seem to bring out either the best or worst in women.” (The Art of the Comeback)

*

“I love women. They’ve come into my life. They’ve gone out of my life. Even those who have exited somewhat ungracefully still have a place in my heart.” (The Art of the Comeback)

*

“She’s just a woman. She can’t take the business.” (As quoted in Trumped!, John R. O’Donnell with James Rutherford, 1991)

*

“I don’t need this, some woman crying. I need somebody strong in here to take care of this place.” (Trumped!)

*

“She is really something else. God, what a body she has!… She’s a beautiful girl. Just a beautiful girl. Fucking gorgeous. An incredible body, just an incredible body. The girl is so physically fit. Beautiful face. A beautiful, beautiful girl.” (Trumped!)

*

“It’s all about the hunt and once you get it, it loses some of its energy. I think competitive, successful men feel that way about women.” (As quoted in TrumpNation, Timothy L. O’Brien, 2005)

“Sam Jackson should have gotten the Oscar for [‘Pulp Fiction’], not Travolta,” Donald mused. “My favorite part is when Sam has his gun out in the diner and he tells the guy to tell his girlfriend to shut up: ‘Tell that bitch to be cool! Say: “Bitch be cool!”’ I love those lines.” (O’Brien, writing in TrumpNation)

*

“I think that putting a wife to work is a very dangerous thing. There was a great softness to Ivana, and she still has that softness, but during this period of time, she became an executive, not a wife… You know, I don’t want to sound too much like a chauvinist, but when I come home and dinner’s not ready, I’ll go through the roof, okay?” (TrumpNation)

*

“You know, it really doesn’t matter what they write as long as you’ve got a young and beautiful piece of ass.” (TrumpNation)

On beauty pageants

“Nobody cares about the talent. There’s only one talent you care about, and that’s the look talent. You don’t give a shit if a girl can play a violin like the greatest violinist in the world. You want to know what does she look like.” (TrumpNation

On publicity

“Publicity is important because it creates interest in my hotels, residential buildings, and other projects. But sometimes it gets out of hand, and my every move is scrutinized by the press to the point of absurdity… The Trump Organization is in some ways like the Disney Company: Image means a great deal to me. If people don’t associate my name with quality and success, I’ve got serious problems.” (Surviving at the Top, Donald Trump with Charles Leerhsen, 1990)

On his youth

“I was especially carefree. I had a comfortable little studio apartment on Third Avenue in the city, and I maintained a lifestyle that was fairly commonplace then but that now, in an age when people are worried about dying from sex, is hard even to imagine. I didn’t drink or take drugs, as far as stimulants go, I’ve yet to have my first cup of coffee. But I was out four or five nights a week, usually with a different woman each time, and I was enjoying myself immensely.

Wild things happened all the time back then, and nobody thought very much of it. For instance, one day a friend called me at the office and said he needed to set up a date for a certain well-known married woman. This woman was visiting from out of town and was, he said — using a typical swinging-seventies expression — ‘really hot.’

I had a girlfriend at that time, and so did he, but I knew a guy named Ben who was very worldly-wise. Ben, I was sure, could serve as this woman’s escort and be discreet about it… She turned out to be the wife of a man who was then the prime minister of a major country. I’d heard stories about this lady, but I never thought much of them until that night. We met at the house of the friend who’d phoned me. After we’d all chatted for a while in the living room, the four of us who already knew each other drifted out to the kitchen, leaving Ben and Madame X in the living room to get better acquainted. Which they did. In fact, when we drifted back in, about ten minutes later, she and Ben were involved in an incredibly torrid scene on the couch. I remember standing there and thinking to myself, ‘Well, Donald, you’re not in Queens anymore.'” (Surviving at the Top)

On Michael Jackson’s sex life

“Somehow, Michael feels comfortable with me. I asked him how he was doing, and we started talking about his life, including his sex life. I was somewhat surprised when Michael told me he had a new girlfriend. I congratulated him and asked, ‘Who is it?’ He was very shy and looked down into his napkin, then put the napkin over his face and said, ‘Trump, Trump, I don’t want to talk about it, I’m so embarrassed.’ I chided him. ‘Come on, Michael,’ I said, ‘tell me who your new girlfriend is.’ When he finally looked up, he said that it was a girl named Lisa Marie.” (The Art of the Comeback)

On onerous litigation

“Litigation in the United States has gotten totally out of control. It has actually become an accepted business practice for people to use the court’s time, money, and energy in order to effect deals, break up deals, and receive money unjustly. I know people who virtually can’t function without starting a lawsuit, thinking that this will give them the upper hand in even the most simple of negotiations. Politicians ought to be ashamed of themselves for perpetuating this ridiculous situation. Court systems have become backlogged for years with superfluous cases.” (The Art of the Comeback)

On germaphobia

“I happen to be a clean-hands freak. I feel much better after I thoroughly wash my hands, which I do as often as possible. Recent medical reports have come out saying that colds and various other ailments are spread through the act of shaking hands. I have no doubt about this.

Almost nothing bothers me more than sitting down for dinner at a beautiful restaurant and having a man you’ve just seen leaving the men’s room, perhaps not even having washed his hands, spot you and run over to your table with a warm and friendly face, hand outstretched. You have a decision to make. Do you shake this total stranger’s hand, or do you insult him by saying that you would rather not? I have done both, and nothing works. If you shake his hand, you then get up to rewash your hands and inevitably somebody else comes over to you to shake hands. If you don’t shake his hand, he walks away with a long face, totally insulted, and bemoans for the rest of his life how that bastard Donald Trump would not shake his hand.” (The Art of the Comeback)

On his fear of AIDS

“It was painfully obvious how ill at ease he was in public situations. In part, I think it was really beyond his control. He was preoccupied by a fear of communicable disease, especially AIDS. Sometimes he’d joke about it, but he went so far as to warn a high-ranking Trump’s Castle publicist to avoid the Jacuzzi in the luxury health spa there because he considered it a potential breeding ground for the deadly virus.” (O’Donnell, writing in Trumped!)

*

“What went on in Studio 54 will never, ever happen again. First of all, you didn’t have AIDS. You didn’t have the problems you have now. I saw things happening there that to this day I have never seen again. I would watch supermodels getting screwed, well-known supermodels getting screwed on a bench in the middle of the room. There were seven of them and each one was getting screwed by a different guy. This was in the middle of the room. Stuff that couldn’t happen today because of problems of death.” (TrumpNation)

On his “tremendous fear of baldness”

“For Donald, image and reality were always in conflict. The Windsor knot in his tie was always pulled tight to his throat. At the same time, he let his sand-colored hair dip down to his eyes and curl over his ears and collar, and he plastered it on the sides with a greasy gel that he believed fostered hair growth. He had a tremendous fear of baldness. He swept his hair across the front of his head like a man trying to hide a thinning patch. He once observed to Mark that he considered baldness a sign of weakness. He gave a tube of the gel he used to Mark, warning him, ‘The worst thing a man can do is go bald. Never let yourself go bald,’ as if nature could be circumvented through sheer force of will.” (O’Donnell, writing in Trumped!)

On boxer Mike Tyson

“Tyson sat down in Donald’s corner office hundreds of feet above Fifth Avenue and the two men chatted for about fifteen minutes before the boxer got to the point. Donald recalled their conversation in detail.

‘Mr. Trump, could I ask you a question?’ Tyson asked.

‘Whatever you want, Mike,’ Donald responded.

‘Are you fucking my wife?’

‘What?’

‘Are you fucking my wife? Everyone’s telling me that you’re fucking my wife.’

Tyson then pulled out a copy of a Vogue magazine that featured a picture of Ms. [Robin] Givens wearing a Trump Princess hat from Donald’s yacht.

‘Everyone’s telling me that you’re fucking my wife and I think you’re fucking my wife,’ Tyson said.

‘Mike, let me tell you something: I never ever even thought about it. And I heard those rumors and they’re disgusting. In fact, I called you a couple of times to tell you that I heard those rumors and it pisses me off. And I never, ever even thought about it. She’s your wife, she’s with you, she’s loyal to you, and it’s total bullshit.’” (O’Brien, writing in TrumpNation)

On dealing with setbacks

“Finally, the ceiling was installed. One Saturday, Donald went up to have a look, accompanied by Steve, some of our hotel executives and a group of contractors. Donald looked up at the ceiling as if it was the first time he had seen it; then he looked at Steve. ‘What the fuck is this?’ he said. ‘Who said to make this ceiling so low?’

‘You knew about this, Donald,’ Steve replied. ‘We talked about it, if you remember, and the plans –‘

Suddenly Donald leaped up and punched his fist through the tile. Then he turned on Steve in a rage. ‘You cocksucker! Motherfucker! Where the fuck were you? Where was your fucking head?'” (O’Donnell, writing in Trumped!)

*

“’Where’s my wife? Get Ivana down here,’ he said. When she arrived, Donald turned on her fiercely. ‘How could you close one of my tables on the busiest fucking night of the year!’ he shouted. ‘I can’t believe you could be so stupid. Do you know how much money I’m losing here? Stupid! You’re costing me a fortune! This is the stupidest fucking thing I’ve ever seen!’” (O’Donnell, writing in Trumped!)

From Marilyn Monroe to Madonna, Here’s a Brief History of the All-American Denim Jacket

If jeans are as American as apple pie, then denim jackets are the vanilla ice cream on top: cool, classic, and always appealing. And while Proenza Schouler, Valentino, and Rachel Comey may have all sent their own trendy iterations down the fall 2015 runways, the denim jacket had already been trending for, oh, just 130 years or so.

The first denim jacket was created circa 1880 by denim legend and Levi’s founder Levi Strauss. Strauss is credited with designing the first-ever jeans in 1870 as a durable, breathable utility garment for cowboys, railroad engineers, and miners to wear during the gold rush out West. Soon after the runaway success of jeans, he gave the world a top to match and dubbed it the Triple Pleat Blouse.

We spoke with Tracey Panek, a historian at Levi Strauss & Co., who said that the denim jackets were ideal for laborers. “Our denim jacket was incredibly durable for various types of manual labor,” Panek said. “The horizontal seams holding down the pleats could be removed to give the wearer extra room.”

While the Levi’s denim jacket has evolved since then, the functionality and innate coolness of the piece has earned it the status as an all-American rebel’s outerwear of choice. “By the ’50s, wearing denim was often associated with juvenile delinquency,” Panek said. “Jeans were even banned in some schools, and denim became the nonconformists’ uniform of choice.” From James Dean’s iconic denim-jacket clad character in Rebel Without a Cause in the ’50s to Rihanna’s deconstructed versions today, jean jackets buck convention, express individuality, and epitomize anti-establishment cool.

Here’s a timeline of denim jackets that will inspire you to pull yours out right now.

The Man from Essence

The Man from Essence

Essence magazine is the most popular, well respected, and largest circulated black women’s magazine in history. Largely unknown is the remarkable story of what it took to earn that distinction. The Man from Essence depicts with candor and insight how Edward Lewis, CEO and publisher of Essence, started a magazine with three black men who would transform the lives of millions of black American women and alter the American marketplace. Throughout Essence’s colorful and storied history, Ed Lewis remained the cool and constant presence, a quiet-talking corporate captain and business strategist who prevailed against the odds and the naysayers. He would emerge to become the last man standing-the only partner to survive the battles that raged before the magazine was sold to Time, Inc. in the largest buyout of a black-owned publication by the world’s largest publishing company. By the time Lewis did the deal with Time, a little magazine that limped from the starting gate in 1970 with a national circulation of 50,000 had grown into a powerhouse with a circulation of more than a million and a pass along readership of eight million. The story of Essence is ultimately the story of American business, black style. From constant battles with a racist advertising community to hostile takeover attempts, warring partners packing heat, mass firings, and mass defections-all of which revealed inherent challenges in running a black business-the saga is as riveting as any thriller steeped in high drama, hijinks, and juicy dishing. In this engaging business memoir, Ed Lewis tells the inspiring story of how his own rise from humble South Bronx beginnings to media titan was shaped by the black women and men in his life. This in turn helped shape a magazine that has changed the face of American media.

Peter Rock Star from Galilee: A Guided Bible Study for Teens and Adults

Peter Rock Star from Galilee: A Guided Bible Study for Teens and Adults

If the New Testament were a Broadway musical, Peter would be one of the stars. He lived life loud, while making his best effort to be one great disciple. Peter was like a modern day rock star, but his struggles were just like ours. If Jesus could shape Peter into a solid rock of a disciple, he can surely do the same for you. From his first call to follow, Peter was acutely aware of his own sinfulness. He wanted Jesus to go away, but ended up following. What makes people push Jesus away today? What makes them decide to follow? These are the kinds of “chew on this” questions you’ll find in Week One of Peter: Rock Star from Galilee. Music always speaks to a deep place in the heart. With the playlists in each chapter, you can let the study themes sink in. The ups and downs of Peter’s life story will come alive as you listen to the music of Tenth Avenue North and other artists. To better understand the feelings Peter had after denying Jesus three times, listen to Josh Wilson’s “Before the Morning.” Feel the love Christ had for all people even on the cross by listening to “Amazing Love” by Chris Tomlin. By the end of the eight-week study, you will create your own playlist of at least eight songs to bring back all you learned about Peter. The digital edition includes links to helpful websites and scripture apps. All you need for an eight week study is included: interactive questions for personal study and “chew on this” questions for small group discussion; photographs, maps, and informative sidebars for historical and geographical context; hands-on mission activities and discipleship challenges.

Movie Review: The Man from U.N.C.L.E.: Broken tentpole

2015-08-12-1439376637-2049961-uncle3.jpg

Guy Ritchie’s The Man from U.N.C.L.E. is a day late and a dollar short — actually, make that several seasons late, for anyone who watches the outrageously funny animated series, Archer.

Watching Henry Cavill deadpan his way through this film as CIA agent Napoleon Solo (the name says it all, doesn’t it?), I kept waiting for him to drop one of those random one-liners that punctuate the Archer episodes like bubbles of laughing gas. Cavill looks the part and could easily play the human version of this cartoon character.

Unfortunately, Ritchie and his cowriter Lionel Wigram didn’t have a roomful of comedy writers to punch up their soft script. The result is a heavy-footed film that barely gets by on one actor’s charm, animated by some patently bogus-looking special effects.

For those of us ancient enough to have been impressionable TV viewers when The Man from U.N.C.L.E. aired on NBC beginning in 1964, the memories hold not the slightest whiff of a spoof. The show was TV’s answer to the growing popularity of the James Bond films and the belief that the audience was intrigued with intrigue and spies (indeed, Bond creator Ian Fleming was one of the show’s originators).

While there was humor in the give-and-take between Solo (Robert Vaughn), colleague Illya Kuryakin (David McCallum) and boss Alexander Waverly (Leo G. Carroll), this show was meant to be semi-serious and exciting, along the lines of the original Mission: Impossible (which went on air two years later). If you wanted parody, you tuned in to Get Smart (which debuted the season after The Man from U.N.C.L.E.).

Now all three of these series have graduated to the big screen — and you can tell from the final scenes of U.N.C.L.E. that it’s meant to be a tentpole franchise. It worked for Mission: Impossible,” though that series is showing its age 20 years and five films into the process.

Ritchie is a pioneering cinematic stylist whose early films broke ground by infusing the most eye-catching visual effects from TV commercials into the British gangster film. Unfortunately, he has never been particularly strong on story. Nor is he a comedy writer: He’s a director with a kinetic and playful visual style, who seems to completely lose the thread when he takes the reins of a big-budget studio franchise (i.e., the cynically cash-grabbing Sherlock Holmes films with Robert Downey Jr.).

So it is with The Man from U.N.C.L.E., which has a repetitive plot and tropes.

Xavier Dolan Is On The Run In New Clip From Thriller ‘Tom At The Farm’

French-Canadian filmmaker Xavier Dolan is back in front of the camera in his latest film, “Tom at the Farm.” The psychological thriller, which debuted at the 2013 Venice Film Festival and finally opens in the U.S. this week, marks the first time the 26-year-old writer-director-actor has ventured into a genre film.

In his follow-up to “Mommy,” “Tom at the Farm” follows the death of Tom’s (Dolan) lover Guillaume. When Tom travels from the city to the countryside for the funeral, he learns that the family knows little of his existence. While Guillaume’s mother (Lise Roy) was expecting a visit from her son’s non-existent girlfriend, the brother Francis (Pierre-Yves Cardinal) quickly understands who Tom is and is adamant to keep his late brother’s sexuality from their mother, even with violence.

In an exclusive clip from the film, scored by Oscar-winning composer Gabriel Yared (“The English Patient”), Tom attempts to escape the family farmhouse after an abusive altercation with Francis.

“Tom at the Farm” opens on Aug. 14.

I Transitioned From Female to Male as a Teen. Here’s My Story

Lots of people are confused by me. First I was a girl who liked girls, and then a boy who liked girls, and now—finally—a dude who likes other dudes. I get it—it is kind of confusing. The best way I’ve heard it explained: Gender is who you want to sleep as, and sexuality is who you want to sleep with. It took me some time to figure out that last part.
