Artists and Fashion Designers Can Apply for $5,000 Grants From Artists Relief Fund

IN NEED OF RELIEF: The financial destruction from the pandemic reaches far and wide, and artists are about to get a lifeline, thanks to an effort led by a coalition of art funders called the Artist Relief Fund.
After 10 days of fundraising, a group of seven art funds have drummed up $ 5 million that will be distributed directly to artists — including fashion designers — via unrestricted $ 5,000 grants. Over the weekend, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation offered a matching grant of $ 5 million.
The Artist Relief Fund initiative goes live today. Professional artists who live in the U.S. and can show financial need are invited to apply.
Artist Relief consists of the Academy of American Poets, Artadia, Creative Capital, Foundation for Contemporary Arts, MAP Fund, the National YoungArts Foundation and United States Artists. Additional contributions are also being sought from organizations and individuals.
With museums and galleries around the world temporarily shuttered for the foreseeable future, many artists, especially those based in major metropolitan cities, are scraping to get by. The average annual salary for fine artists including painters, sculptors and illustrators is $ 58,370, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

COVID-19 Response: Pyer Moss Converting Office Into Donation Center, Establishing Fund

As attention began to shift Wednesday to medical professionals at the front lines of the coronavirus crisis, and how they are facing dire shortages of basic supplies, Pyer Moss designer Kerby Jean-Raymond stepped in to try to help fill the void.
The New York designer, who grew up in Flatbush, posted on Instagram Wednesday explaining that his sister, a medical professional, has been exposed to COVID-19, and that her health and that of her elderly patients has been compromised due to a lack of N95 masks. That story, and others about nurses resorting to rewearing masks after cleaning them with bleach, prompted him to convert his New York office into a donation center.
Jean-Raymond included his address on 27th Street in the post, asking for people to mail donations of masks and Latex gloves, and noted he will be contributing $ 5,000 to purchase supplies, if anyone can DM leads about where to buy them. The post received nearly 2,500 likes in an hour.
In a second post, he unveiled plans to set aside $ 50,000 for minority and female-owned independent businesses in distress that may be in trouble and unable to make payroll, asking people to contact an email address with the domain “yourfriendsinnewyork”

Gucci Joins the Lion’s Share Fund

GUCCI’S LION’S SHARE: Gucci is once again raising funds to combat the changes in nature and biodiversity globally. To this end, the Italian company has joined the Lion’s Share Fund — the first fashion and luxury brand to adhere.
Led by the United Nations Development Programme and a coalition of businesses, the fund aims to raise more than $ 100 million a year within the next five years for animal conservation, biodiversity and climate by asking brands to contribute 0.5 percent of their media spend every time an animal is featured in their advertisements.
“The Lion’s Share Fund is an important addition to our conservation strategy,” said president and chief executive officer Marco Bizzarri. “Nature and wildlife provide Gucci with inspired creation that is an integral part of our narrative through our collections and campaigns. With the increasing threats to the planet’s biodiversity, groundbreaking initiatives like the Lion’s Share Fund have the potential to be transformative by organically connecting the business community with direct action to protect our natural habitats and most threatened species.”
Launched in September 2018, the fund has already provided a grant to improve critical radio systems for law enforcement officers protecting wildlife in Mozambique’s Niassa National Reserve. It has also

Winner, Winner, Winner at the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Dinner

At the risk of stating the obvious — and being indelicate in doing so — the12th annual CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund dinner was all about the money. The event, held Monday night at Spring Studios in New York, was the culmination of the four-month fashion boot camp during which the 10 finalists all but pledge their first born to Vogue and the CFDA in exchange for the chance at $ 400,000 and a year of mentorship ($ 150,000 for the runners-up).
But, surprise! When Amanda Seyfried took to the stage with Riccardo Tisci, who was the evening’s inspirational designer of the year, to unveil the winner, she revealed a change of plans: There would be three winners instead of one, and each would receive $ 300,000 and a year of mentorship. No runners-up this year, just winners and “finalists.” In the former camp was shoe designer Aurora James of Brother Vellies; Rio Uribe of Gypsy Sport, and Jonathan Simkhai. In the latter — Baja East, Baldwin, Cadet, CG, Chromat, David Hart and Thaddeus O’Neil.
The decision to up the money and the number of winners was reached that morning, according to Steven Kolb, president and chief executive officer of the CFDA. “What happens in this process
