Deep Sea Halloween Party With a Good Cause

SPOOKY NIGHT: The London Edition threw a lavish deep-sea theme Halloween dinner party on Thursday in partnership with Project 0 in order to raise awareness around ocean conservation, hosted by Georgia May Jagger, Rufus Taylor and Kim Jones, who unfortunately couldn’t attend due to scheduling conflict.
Poppy Delevingne, Nick Grimshaw, Pixie Geldof, Jaime Winstone and Clara Paget attended the party at Berners Tavern, which was transformed for the night into a fictional sunken dining room of the ill-fated HMS Berners, once the most glamorous ship to sail. Grimshaw dressed as a giant blue water jellyfish, while Paget cos-played Anne Bonny, one of the most famous female pirates of all time.
Guests were greeted by a cast of fantastical creatures, mermaids, deep-sea divers and freakishly flexible disco-fishes, some with luminescent hula hoops, upon arrival with drinks made of Grey Goose Vodka. During the evening, one could purchase “pearls,” 50 pounds each, to be in with a chance to win lost treasures from the ship’s treasure chest, guarded by a mermaid and a fortune-telling lobster lady.
Prizes included an overnight stay at The London Edition, Glastonbury tickets, Dior Saddle bag, Diptyque candles, Shrimps hair clips and Flowers voucher.

Billy Neville, Founder of Rogue and Good Company, Dies at 79

Services will be held on Friday, Oct. 11, in Jackson, Miss., for William (Billy) Neville III, founder of The Rogue men’s wear store, who died at his home Monday at the age of 79. According to published reports, the former retailer was found by his brother when he did not respond to phone calls. The cause of death is not known.
Neville opened The Rogue and Good Company in 1967 in Fondren, Miss., in the old Capri Theater, and it moved to its current location at 4450 Interstate 55 North in Jackson in 1970. Its logo of three men in tuxedos and top hats soon became recognizable in both the community and the industry and Neville’s store soon became one of the finest men’s stores in the South.
He sold The Rogue to Keith Kinkade and Luke Abney in 2005, and it is still in operation. However, Neville continued to be active in the apparel business, consulting with Will Leather Goods and continuing to be a fixture at the men’s trade shows in New York City through his Neville & Associates practice.
Neville was born in New Orleans on Aug. 17, 1940, and graduated from McComb High School before attending Tulane University. He

The Good Wife’s Jess Weixler Announces She’s Expecting a Baby with Husband Hamish Brocklebank

There’s a baby on the way for Jess Weixler and her husband Hamish Brocklebank!

On Monday, the 37-year-old actress announced she’s expecting her first child in a very relatable — and funny — way.

“Just had some pizza ❤🌱(6 months),” Weixler captioned an Instagram post, joking that her baby bump is really just a food baby.

In the shot, The Good Wife star, dressed in all black, can be seen cradling her pregnant belly in a field full of apple trees.

A rep for Weixler did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Weixler and Brocklebank, a British businessman, got married in 2015 during a stunning ceremony on the beach.

For the nuptials, Weixler wore an off-white, Grecian-style tulle gown and wore her hair in waves.

Rather than going the traditional route, Brocklebank wore a coral colored suit with a white shirt and a black tie.

Both opted to go barefoot for the sandy festivities.

“A lot of love on that beach,” Weixler captioned a photo from their wedding day.

SHOPPING NEWS UPDATE:

Jourdan Dunn on Her Two Met Gala 2016 Balmain Looks: ‘I Felt Really Good About Myself’

If you thought Jourdan Dunn killed it with her two Met Gala looks—both by Balmain—you’re not the only one. The British model herself agrees with you. “Last night I felt really good about myself,” she told PeopleStyle when we caught up with her on the set of a campaign shoot today. She paired the look with Stuart Weitzman heels and Eva Fehren jewelry.

Jourdan Dunn Met Gala 2016David Fisher/REX/Shutterstock; Kevin Mazur/Getty

Dunn fell right in line with the night’s overall trend: Bold silver gowns with a robot-like inspiration, a perfect fit for the Met Gala’s theme of ‘Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology.’ Kim Kardashian, Kylie Kardashian, Kris Jenner, Cindy Crawford, Alessandra Ambrosio and Doutzen Kroes joined Dunn in wearing Balmain and, together, they walked the carpet as the #BalmainArmy, a hashtag the fashion house created in the past (and has stuck as a way to describe fans of the brand).

Instagram Photo

For Dunn’s look, she worked directly with Balmain creative director Olivier Rousteing. “Olivier sent two sketches—one was a short one and one was a long one,” she explained. “I was drawn to the long one, I thought it was amazing. When I had my fitting for it, it all came together.” As soon as her glam squad got a whiff of the direction, they suggested she pair the look with gray, silvery hair. “I thought it was a cool idea,” she said.

Instagram Photo

But despite the fact that she looked calm and collected in all of the photos, she admitted it’s actually a very nerve-wracking experience. “There are people everywhere, like waiting for you to walk out of your hotel and then all the paparazzi,” she said. “ It’s huge. So I was in the car, and I was nervous. But once I got on the red carpet, I just had to own it and feel myself.”

Instagram Photo

RELATED PHOTOS: Every Gorgeous Gown at the 2016 Met Gala

It’s a long way that she’s come from her first gala appearance in 2009 (below, with Karlie Kloss). “I remember when I first attended seven years ago, I felt so out of place and like I shouldn’t really be there,” she said. “Now I feel I do deserve to be here, I’ve worked hard. I like being in that mind frame.”

Jourdan Dunn First Met Gala LookErik C. Pendzich/REX/Shutterstock

After the gala concluded, Dunn slipped into a black sequined mini Balmain to head downtown to the Gilded Lily after-party. “The second look is all about being able to move and dance and just feel good,” she said. “With a Balmain dress, sometimes that’s a bit impossible because they’re so structured. But in my fitting, Olivier wanted to make sure I was able to move. It’s all about something fun and be able to move and get down in and look good in.”

But she didn’t change in the car. “Some people do that but I went back to my hotel, chilled, refreshed my makeup and changed really quick and headed out,” she said. (And no, the Army did not travel together.)

RELATED PHOTOS: The Biggest Trends at the 2016 Met Gala

So, how can regular people get into the #BalmainArmy? There’s no boot camp, unfortunately, she said. “I don’t know how I became a member,” she added, “but I’m happy to be in the army.”

Which Jourdan Dunn look did you like better: Met Gala or after-party? Tell us in the comments below!

  • Larry David Was Pretty, Pretty Good As Bernie Sanders, But This Comedian Is Even Better

The Internet agreed that “Seinfeld” co-creator and “Curb Your Enthusiasm” star Larry David did a pretty, pretty good impression of Democratic presidential candidate (and fellow Brooklyn native) Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on “Saturday Night Live.” Even Sanders himself loved it, joking that he’ll invite David to his campaign rallies because “he does better than I do.”

But here’s one that rivals David’s portrayal, from comedian James Adomian, who performed his own Sanders impression last week at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York.

Watch Adomian as Sanders in the clip above, participating in a “debate” with Donald Trump, played by comedian Anthony Atamanuik.

And here’s David again, in case you missed it.

Now You Can Buy Your Own Trump Blow-Up Sex Doll (For A Good Cause)

Syrian artist Saint Hoax claims not to pay much attention to the vitriol that comes out of Donald Trump’s mouth. But last week, the presidential hopeful made some comments on Europe’s refugee crisis that he couldn’t ignore: If elected, Trump said that he would send all Syrian refugees in the U.S. back to their war-torn country. Because the refugees could, Trump opined, be ”a Trojan horse” for ISIS.

Saint Hoax is responding with a satirical project involving blow-up sex dolls made to look like Donald Trump. For $ 39, you can own a Trump of your very own, to do with as you see fit. Proceeds from the sale of the dolls, all made in China (obviously), will go to the UN Refugee Agency to provide blankets, water, dry clothes and food to Syrian refugees.

“I’m hoping to raise enough money to show people how a blow-up Donald is actually more useful than the actual Trump,” the artist told The Huffington Post in an email from Lebanon. In addition to dissing the candidate, Saint Hoax sees the dolls as a metaphor.

“People can fill him up with air and deflate him at any minute,” he wrote. “It’s a symbolic representation of how a political leader is made. Each box includes a Trump doll and a needle for you to pop him whenever you feel like it.”

Get this. And get it straight. Gordon Gekko was wrong. Greed is not good. Greed is bad. Greed eats away the core of society like a golden parasitic leech the size of Manitoba. Or Saskatchewan. And practicing and/ or defending greed makes you nothing but a blood-sucking tick no matter how fancy a suit you’re wearing. Or size of the diamonds around your wrist. Or how free-range the organic heirloom Chicken Florentine is on your plate.

The movie Wall Street came out in 1987. And after Vietnam and Watergate and an oil embargo and four years of scolding by Jimmy Carter, a little irrational exuberance may have seemed warranted. But that was 30 years ago. Too much is no longer not enough. Too much has gotten way out of hand. Today’s too much is much much too much.

In his UN address, the Pope said it best. “A selfish and boundless thirst for power and material prosperity leads both to the misuse of available natural resources and to the exclusion of the weak and disadvantaged.” You know what; he’s right. Got to love Papa Frankie. The guy is like a slightly older more lovable Argentinian Bernie Sanders. With the crank dialed down to a manageable hum.

Let’s be honest; what we’re really talking about here is that idiot CEO, Martin Shkreli who raised the price of the life-saving drug, Daraprim, from $ 13.50 a pill to $ 750 each, because, and I quote, he “needs to start making a profit.” A 5,455% increase: which if produce distributors did to onions would make a side of rings about 3 grand.

This rapacious price gouge follows in the carnivorous footsteps of Gilead Sciences who developed a drug called Solvadi, a cure for Hepatitis C. The treatment regimen consists of 84 pills. Each one costing 1,000 dollars. That’s right. 84,000 dollars. But then you’re cured. And after all, how much is your life worth? Half of what you own? Everything? Your first born?

Gilead Sciences is publicly traded, but Turing Pharmaceuticals has no stockholders to report to. Just Shkreli, the former hedge fund manager. A group known for having the same conscience as starving hyenas in heat. These guys make a safari of lion-killing dentists look cuddlesome.

Remember the traders who advised clients to buy stocks that they themselves were getting rid of? Them’s our boys. The mindset of a hedge funder is whatever it takes to make the most money: lie, cheat, steal and worse. They rewrote the book on worse.

And now that worse includes letting people die for profit. We’ve moved beyond taxing hedge fund managers at the same rate as real humans and moved into deciding how long the season should be for hedge fund manager hunting. Bows? Shotguns? Anti-tank guided weapons?

What’s to keep these guys from creating diseases for which their companies conveniently have the antidote? Ethics? How often have Republicans lectured us: There is no ethical consideration, only business.

Speaking of ethically challenged, even Donald Trump called the price hike a disgrace and said Shkreli should be ashamed of himself. And when a man who sucks up to bigots and racists calls you shameless, it’s definitely time to rethink your priorities.

Excerpt: … TREASURE CHAPTER I THE WISE MAN AND THE FOOt THERE is no justification for the idea that cousins ought to have similar tastes and aspirations any more than that they ought to be alike in form and feature. And yet when people were told that George Harvey and Thomas Ewins were cousins they would generally say: "What! Those two cousins! Well! Who would have thought it!" Certainly the cousins had a few things in common: they had no other near relatives and they lived together, sharing the same joint, the same dish of vegetables, the same pudding, the same loaf, the same domestic et ceteras, provided by Mrs. Bowers. They did not, however, share the same philosophy. They did not often discuss it–as philosophy. But every now and then they raised voices in scorn, each finely overflowing with contempt for the other. They had both had to make their way in life as they had been left fatherless at a tender age, and had sown and reaped for themselves almost from the early teens. Harvey was a printer and for some few years past had managed the business formerly belonging to Edward Gollam, but now the sole property of his sorrowful and not well-to-do widow. When Mr. Gollam died and left his widow with four girls and a printing business, Ewins told his cousin to ask for a partnership, or start printing on his own account. But Mrs. Gollam wondered so pathetically how she "could manage with four girls; if one had been a boy it would have been different, particularly if he had been old enough to step in his father's shoes, but girls . . . and how could she manage a business that she knew nothing of?" And when a woman (or man for that matter) looked pathetically helpless George Harvey was always touched. It was quite true that George Harvey might have made…

Good News! Your Dreams Are Made of Crap!

    2015-08-21-1440187739-1821634-BlogCrapDreams3small.jpg

Your dreams are not made of clouds.
Your dreams are not made of pixie dust.
Your dreams are made of CRAP!
Dirty, smelly, inconvenient, annoying, scary, crap.

Often we see all the miles and miles between us and our dreams as a problem. You think, “Aw man if I could just get past this crap, then I’d be happy.” And you sit and dream about magically floating over all the crap you don’t want to deal with.

Floating over the crap never works, because you need the crap to make your dreams real.

Your dreams don’t come true simply by arriving on the other side. They come true when you stop dreaming about them and start digging through all the crap you need to manifest them.

Your great relationship isn’t in the perfect partner. It’s in digging into the crap of talking about your life, deciding where to go to dinner, and giving your partner reassurance that yes indeed they are hot.

Your great small business isn’t in finding the perfect customers. It’s in digging through all the crap of bad web design, poorly thought branding, and missteps in the marketplace until you begin to fully understand what drives you to build a business and how you can truly serve the world you live in.

Your great new career isn’t about finding a job that magically fulfills you. It’s in leaving your comfortable place at a big company, being scared to death, floundering, and searching until you find the work that speaks to your heart like nothing else.

Intentions are not the answer, wishing isn’t the answer, manifesting isn’t the answer, the answer is crap.

When you dig into the crap of your life, you find all the parts of yourself you haven’t faced and the corners of your heart you have locked away. Digging into the crap sucks, but it makes you grow.

You become a wiser, more compassionate and more totally kick ass version of who you truly are. The crap cleanses you, and when you get through it, even your dreams are different.

So now’s the time. Find the crap and dig in. It’s not pretty, but it’s never going to get any prettier than it is right now either.

    What are you waiting for?

The Connection Between Honesty and Good Health

    2015-08-20-1440095666-4933500-speakingthetruthBrisbaneCityCouncil.jpg

    By Susi Amendola

Being truthful in our thoughts, words, and actions can create integrity and harmony in our lives. It provides us with a foundation for connected relationships with others and ourselves. When we are able to speak what we truly feel and believe, we set the foundation for honest and open communication with others.

Being truthful can also be linked to good health. In 2012, Anita Kelly, a psychology professor at the University of Notre Dame, spent 10 weeks tracking the health of 110 adults. “When they told more lies, their health went down,” she has said. “And when they told the truth, it improved.” In fact, she found that people who told three fewer minor lies a week had four fewer mental health complaints and three fewer physical complaints.

    Deliver Truth with Compassion

Telling the truth can be very different from simply voicing our opinions and judgments. Yesterday while shopping, I was trying on clothes in the dressing room and I heard the woman next to me saying to her friend, “I’m just going to tell you the truth! That dress looks awful on you! I hate that color and the way it hangs!” The other woman said, “Really? I kind of like it, I feel good in it.” The woman was offering her friend an opinion that didn’t match what her friend was feeling. Opinions connect us to our thinking mind. They are quite often rooted in judgments, where as being truthful requires listening to our hearts. Real truth involves a level of compassion that can trump the negative effects of the brutal honesty we deliver to others in order to be real. Using the truth as a weapon lacks compassion. For our inner truth to emerge we need to hold a place of tenderness as we pay attention to what we are feeling in each moment. This kind of moment-by-moment awareness leads us to what is true.

How Yoga Can Help Us Be More Truthful

Our daily yoga practice gives us the tools to face ourselves with kindness and honesty. On our yoga mat we have the choice to listen to our body or disregard what is being presented to us in every moment. For example, if we start to slide into a seated forward bend and we feel the agonizing pull of the hamstrings, we can retreat, push, or pause. If we retreat, we disengage and that may take the pressure off, but we also might lose some valuable information the posture is offering us about ourselves if we were to stay engaged. If we push through, we are going against the simple truth that our body is telling us (or yelling us) in that moment. We are disregarding the message to reach some sort of outcome or meet some goal we have created for ourselves. If we pause, we can listen more deeply and gather more information. We are inviting a dialogue with our own body.

When we become skilled at pausing and listening we gain a sense of clarity and honesty with ourselves. This kind of honesty goes a long way in teaching us about aligning with our own inner truth. When we step out of what is true for us, we pay a price. If we try to be someone else or something else, or if we try to be somewhere we are not, it’s like trying to swim against the current.

Doing yoga postures daily gives us the opportunity to align ourselves with how we are feeling. In time, we begin to trust ourselves and honor what is right for us. We move, we observe, we explore our edges. We notice our resistance, our sensations, and feelings as we drop into the richness of each moment. It’s there that we meet our authentic self. The more we practice, the more opportunity we have to cultivate a heartfelt connection to ourselves. Being authentic comes from knowing ourselves and honoring what we know to be true for us in any given moment. If we think, speak and act from our truth our lives begin to take shape around the organizing principle of honesty. The truth finds its way from our hearts into the hearts of those around us.

Have you noticed a difference in how you feel when speak the truth?

10 Reasons Why Having Your Campaign Poster Photo-Shopped Is A Good Thing

It’s election time in Canada and the Liberal Party of Canada has a new look for their campaign posters. They’ve been getting a lot of attention, particularly this modification of the candidate for Quebec’s LaSalle-Émard-Verdun riding’s poster, David Lametti.

    2015-08-19-1439996483-8493487-LamettiGowron.PNG

Yup, that’s the Klingon leader Gowron, the son of M’Rel and the leader of the Klingon Empire. Quite the comparison!

Lametti’s been having fun with the attention this has been getting (the man who first created the poster even has a twitter handle: @liberalgowron), and so I thought I’d ask him, in the vein of David Letterman, to give us his Top 10 Reasons Why Having Your Campaign Poster Photo-Shopped is a Good thing. Here are his answers:

    10. The photo-shopped posters create dialogue. People are talking about our posters, and the Liberals invite debate, discussion and dialogue.

    9. People are more creative with our posters than with the other parties. Our posters are not bland, they stand out. With that we get people who will either love them or hate them, and people are at least being creative and interactive with the liberal posters, instead of just ignoring them like the NDP or Conservative ones.

    8. The humour decreases the intensity of the poster. Some people have commented that the posters look too intense. I don’t agree with that, but having some fun with them certainly balances that out.

    7. Having more and better hair than I’ve had before.

    6. Free publicity. Thanks @liberalgowron

    5. It shows that the Liberal team has a sense of humour. We take this in stride and laugh about it.

    4. Ups Canada’s potential for a strategic alliance with the Romulans.

    3. My former students would say I’m a tough marker but at least I’m not a Klingon.

    2. Comic con’s been calling.

    1. I’d still vote for a Klingon over Prime Minister Harper.

Maybe he’ll live long and prosper.

This Parody Of Bollywood ‘Party Songs’ Is Too Good, Yaar

Any behemoth industry has its lazy side. In Bollywood, this has to be the “party song,” a seemingly requisite scene in a certain kind of blockbuster, governed by a crude formula that audiences still, somehow, go wild for.

There’s so much to satirize about the genre, from the requisite objectification of women (water must always meet clothing) to the reliable co-opting of black culture — with an always sub par rap interlude, à la Rebecca Black’s “Friday,” that belies the culture’s prejudices (against dark skin, and African-origin people, subservient in the insidious hierarchy that still lingers from colonial times).

Thankfully, India finally has satirists up to the task. In the long but worth it video above, the popular sketch comedy troupe All India Bakchod teams up with scene-stealer Irfan Khan  – you know his scene thefts from “Namesake,” “Life Of Pi,” and “Jurassic Park” — for a parody that perfectly skewers Bollywood’s particular hypocrisies.

Based on “Party All Night,” a hit song from 2013, the satiric version calls out everything from censor boards (Bottles! Girls! Because this is a song, censors will let it go!) to cynical producers who know the music-leading structure of the industry means they can make a hefty salary off a movie with a single catchy song and little else of note. Even for those unfamiliar with Bollywood, the tropes should feel relevant, given that every American party anthem music video engages in parallel ones.

As a side benefit, it’s fun to see Khan — a hidden gem in Bollywood’s thicket of Ken-doll clones — playing diva, in the leisurely intro. “I don’t want to brag about myself, but I … can … do … anything.”

Respectfully requesting a parody of Indian cable news next.

Jake Owen: Living the Good Life

It’s hard to get Jake Owen away from the water.
Even on a day off from his nationwide tour with Kenny Chesney, the country music star made a side trip to Lake Tahoe.
“It’s my first time here, so I’m going to see what the lake has to offer,” he said.
An avid boater, fisherman, wakeboarder and surfer, Owen has built a following with good-time anthems such as “Beachin’” that connect with a youthful, fun-loving audience.
So it makes  sense that Owen has teamed up with the Salt Life apparel brand that will be cosponsoring his tour this fall.
He’ll also serve as one of the company’s “team members,” which include fishermen, surfers and divers.
“I’ve been a fan of what the brand has to offer for a while. It complements the life I live,” Owen said. “I like to spend my free time on the water. That’s how I unwind.”
The singer said he’s a “big clothing guy and I enjoy getting dressed up,” and at award shows he likes to “look nice and dapper.” But he’s most comfortable in board shorts, T-shirts and flip-flops. “My day-to-day life is very casual,” he said.
It’s that sensibility that will be reflected in a Jake Owen collection he’s currently

How to Take a Good Bikini Photo

Selfies and bikini shots get a bad name—they’re a little cheesy, and maybe a little braggy, but the fact of the matter is, they’re a fun record of our youth, whether we’re 21 or in our mid-40s with two kids. Some of them will be bad, and thanks to digital film (and hopefully good friends), most of those will get deleted. Some of them will be just meh, and we’ll look a little BBQ-and-beer-bloated in them. It’s OK that there are a few crummy pics of you out there in the world, though, especially if there are others where you look relaxed, happy, flattered, and damn sexy. So how do you get those photos? We asked three top bloggers for advice on poses and poise.

Bullmastiff Snitches On French Bulldog For Toilet Paper Mess, Gives Tattling A Good Name

    This dog is a rat.

A bullmastiff hilariously appears to point the paw of guilt at a French bulldog when asked who made a big toilet paper mess.

Sure, the French bulldog looks awfully and adorably culpable, but there’s no need for tattling, unless of course it’s done in the funniest way possible.

So props for the sweetest snitching ever.

The SCOTUS Decision That’s Really Good For Mental Health (Hint: It’s Not Obamacare)

The Supreme Court of the United States made a historic ruling on same-sex marriage on Friday, voting 5 to 4 in favor of legalizing all unions. Not only does this allow everyone to marry the person they love, regardless of sexual orientation, but it’s also a step forward for mental health in a community that’s often stigmatized.

The SCOTUS decision is a leap in the right direction — especially when it comes to boosting the mental health of LGBT individuals.

According to the American Psychological Association, marriage boosts psychosocial and mental health due to the moral, social and even economic support extended to married couples in our society — and denial of those rights may impose certain risks when it comes to well-being. A 2012 University of California, Los Angeles study found that psychological distress is lower among gay, lesbian and bisexual couples who are allowed to be legally married, compared with those in unions that are not legally recognized.

In other words, science suggests that letting people marry who they want boosts mental and maybe even physical health.

The UCLA study isn’t the only evidence that champions legalized same-sex marriage for this reason. Around 2004, when state bans on same-sex marriage started to peak, the National Institutes of Mental Health conducted a survey that examined respondents’ mental health. Results showed gay, lesbian or bisexual individuals who lived in states where their unions were banned experienced a notable increase in psychiatric disorders, NPR reported, including mood disorders and alcohol-use disorder.

Additionally, when same-sex marriage laws passed in Massachusetts in 2003, research found that gay men experienced fewer stress-related disorders and lower health care use, suggesting a potential link between the two events.

Social exclusion may also take a toll on mental health, studies show, something the LGBT community has been all too familiar with when it comes to marriage. “It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage. Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves,” Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote in the majority opinion on the ruling. “Their hope is to not be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization’s oldest institutions.”

Fundamentally, love of all kinds contributes to several health perks, including a healthier heart, better mood and even improved longevity. While love doesn’t require marriage, a celebration of love can be viewed as a celebration of this kind of health. Ruling in favor of same-sex marriage also rules in favor of a happy, healthy mind by creating a more inclusive community free from isolation — and that’s something we can all support.

Microsoft’s ‘Elite’ Controller Is Good News For Gamers With Disabilities

Microsoft doesn’t seem to realize that its new Xbox One gamepad, designed for hardcore gamers, could also help people with disabilities.

Announced Monday during a presentation at the E3 gaming conference, the Elite controller boasts new features that will allow gamers to swap where their buttons are, what kind of thumbsticks or d-pads are being used and how sensitive the controls are. It also introduces four new “bumper pad” buttons that can be given a variety of functions depending on what the user wants or needs.

The default functions on many standard controllers can make certain games off-limits for people with disabilities who have trouble pressing specific buttons or combinations of buttons. Being able to completely redefine controls is key for these people.

In some ways, the Elite controller is the Xbox’s hardware equivalent to certain accessibility features that Sony baked into its PlayStation platform and released in March. PlayStation lets gamers change font sizes, invert colors for better visibility and completely re-configure the buttons for any game, among other tweaks.

Xbox has yet to integrate such features with its system software. The Elite controller, which will be released in October for $ 150, is the only official option Xbox offers for players who want (or need) to tweak the control setups for every game.

Steven Spohn, the chief operations officer at AbleGamers, a nonprofit dedicated to opening up video games to people with disabilities, told The Huffington Post Monday that the Elite controller is a step in the right direction. Offering “modular” controls can definitely help people enjoy games, he said. But there’s a lot of work to be done still.

He pointed out the Elite designers probably weren’t thinking about gamers with disabilities when they created the controller. The fact that it ended up being accessible to these people, he says, is a coincidence. Sophisticated gamers were more likely the target here, according to Spohn.

“It’s an interesting advancement,” Spohn said. “But unfortunately, it looks like this is going to be accessible by accident. This is really designed for people who consider themselves higher-end gamers.”

“It’s great to see them [Micorosft] work with accessibility, but they still have not come out with an answer to PlayStation,” he continued. “The amount of things you can do on PlayStation now for accessibility — changing colors, options for hearing impaired — everything is not 100 percent on PlayStation, but it is leaps and bounds beyond what Xbox is offering.”

(Even Sony’s hardware isn’t perfect, however. While PlayStation 4’s accessibility features let people tweak games, the system doesn’t allow the use of custom-made, non-Sony controllers that might make things even better for those with disabilities.)

If Microsoft actually does intend for the Elite to help people with disabilities, the announcement Monday didn’t hint at that purpose. A trailer for the controller showed footage centering on precision turning in driving games and more accurate sniping in shooters — features any Xbox Live devotee would likely be thrilled with.

The company doesn’t appear to be marketing the Elite controller as a tool for individuals with disabilities, either.

Microsoft did not respond to a request for more details about the Elite controller.

Spohn said it’s a problem that the Xbox One still doesn’t offer dedicated accessibility options for gamers, and this issue makes the console a tough sell for some. It’s not like people haven’t been asking Microsoft for these features: For some time now, gamers have taken to an Xbox Feedback message board to post requests for accessibility options.

Even though the Elite controller is limited in terms of how it might help gamers with disabilities, it’s still a small step forward.

“We’re looking forward to getting some of these into the laboratory to try out,” Spohn told HuffPost.

Orgone at Underground Arts: Just Like Good Times

    2015-05-21-1432171139-3896133-OrgoneatUA_18613.jpg

Philadelphia – The room was called “The Black Box”, which was self explanatory, save for the red velvet curtain separating the stage area from a lounging space, complete with giant Oriental rug and deep sectional sofas. It reminded me of the so-called venues I’d frequented as a college student, but in only the good ways. Three days prior was the first time I’d even heard of Orgone, a jazzy, funky, soul outfit hailing from Los Angeles, and I literally only took notice because their promotional poster featured a great photo, with the lead singer’s resplendant afro bouncing while frozen in mid-jump. A sucker for an afro-ed woman, I made my way to the venue, Underground Arts, having done a cursory amount of research and listening to the band’s Soundcloud page in advance. I even donned a black t-shirt emblazoned with an image of Fela Kuti because I thought that would be apropos for the night. If I ever meet the photographer who made the photo used for that promotional poster, I owe them a hearty thanks, because my instincts were proven correct.

Prepared as I was, I knew this would be a dance filled night. The crowd, which slowly filtered in and tentatively received the excellent opening act, Sophistafunk, had to be cajoled forward through their self-imposed semi-circle force field keeping them from the stage. The warming up didn’t take long, though. The quartet’s infectious and groovy songs, with their MC/vocalist’s pattering rhymes made for a welcoming party starter. The talent buyers made a wise choice with Sophistafunk. Having toured with Orgone for the prior two weeks, it wasn’t necessary to remove their instruments from the stage between sets. A five minute, smile filled break preceded the headliners, who bounded onto the stage as if answering a challenge. This is when my decision to attend the show was instantly rewarded. They opened their set with a burning instrumental called Meat Machine”, which falls midpoint into their new album, Beyond The Sun. It’s a fitting announcement, and full of confidence. Having yet to see the band live, this introduction was funky from the gate – driving percussion, stabbing synths, searing guitar, et al., the tone was set for what was to come. Let me slow down first.

One of the most enduring memories of my childhood is of the famous painting by Ernie Barnes called “Sugar Shack”. It’s the one that appears during the opening and closing credits of the now classic television show, Good Times. Elongated bodies snaked and contorted around each other as they danced mesmerized by whatever music the painting captured, and the viewer simply wishes to be there. The scene conveys a comfort within the confines of a very crowded room – a comfort in the closeness of companionship and communal enjoyment of the moment. It’s hot. It’s funky. it’s sensual. Enter Adryon De Leon. Tall, golden haired, and broadly smiling, the room was hers in that instant. As the crowd is already an hour plus into their cardio program, they may have missed the nod to the Philadelphian duo, Zhane, as she belted into a funkier, meatier rendition of “Hey Mr. DJ”, their stalwart hit from the early nineties. But that’s easily excused as this wasn’t an excercise in music academia (though it was a treat for those paying attention). Apparently, an Orgone show is a funk party, plain and simple, and the band’s sole ambition to get down, by getting the crowd off. I looked around the room and the best, yet most blunt way I can describe the dynamic is that the whole crowd, the band (and maybe the bartenders, too) had their faces fixed in the expressions of good lovemaking. I think that is also how one defines the funk, too (at least some of us do). The groove is so hard it looks like it smells bad. Afterwards I explained that idea to the boyish looking bass player, Dale Jennings, who concurred that the band members feel the same thing on stage. He related that the sounds and energies emanating from all of the players on a tight crowded stage feel as if being hugged the whole time – almost as if in that famous Ernie Barnes painting.

My conversation with Dale did turn to music academia, though, of course. I mentioned to him that I noticed the band’s nod to the obscure Larry Levan edit of The Clash song, “The Magnificent Dance”, which they’d snuck into a cover of “It’s Serious” by Cameo. Being the bass player, I’d assumed he was responsible, since the bassline is most prominent and recognizeable. He was, in part. The original Orgon bassist, Tim Glum had played it on the studio recording, but as a fan of The Clash’s bass player, Paul Simonon, Dale opted to play the live version using a Fender P Bass and Ampeg SVT, as he had seen Simonon play. The whole outfit is made up of music nerds, as it turned out, and that explained their deep knowledge and proficiency. Each player was also afforded opportunities to solo, as if necessary to convince the crowd this band had chops. By this point, it wasn’t. It had been made abundantly clear. Listening the night before, I believed that much of what I’d heard would have been right at home on Larry Levan’s mid to late eighties Paradise Garage playlist. I mentioned to Dale and their keyboardist, Dan Hastie, one song in particular, “Keep The Fire Burnin'”, which sounded like a proto-typical dance song. It turned out to be a cover of a song originally recorded by Gwen McCrae – another Levan favorite. I mention all of this because, as a DJ, Levan was hugely influential in New York, and beyond, and many of the songs and styles we listen and dance to today were fostered on his turntables. The closing song, “Love Maker”, which turned into a call and response jam, sounded like a reworking of a Betty Davis song which I can’t put a name to, but it, too, was funk hewn from the earth. The music nerd in me recognized those influences in Orgone, and those sounds, those grooves are as elemental to partying as anything in my life experience.

It’s important to note that, while the band slips in some covers and nods in their set, there are plenty of original compositions – all equally accessible and fun, and the players are all stacked with charisma. The afro-ed Adryon sang and left, leaving the stage to burn up some more under the feet of the instrumentalists, nearly charring the floor in front of them, then returning to encore with “I Get Lifted” by KC and The Sunshine Band, which is a guaranteed crowd rouser, no matter where they are. I can’t say enough about how fortuitous it was for me seeing that poster and following my gut. Everyone should be so lucky.

Beyond The Sun was released two weeks ago. Orgone will continue to tour, making dates throughout the west coast this summer

An Adult’s Preposterous, Laughable, No Good, Very Real Day

Have you read the amazing children’s book Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst? If not, you should. Here’s my parody of the original, from an adult’s point of view:

I went to bed with my $ 750 night guard in my mouth and now it’s lost in my room, and when I woke up this morning my kids were cranky (“Out of my room!”) and starving (“Cereal, stat!”) and we were out of milk, and by mistake I got black mascara all over my hands and then wiped them on my white, silk shirt. I could tell it was going to be a preposterous, laughable, no good, very real day.

On the subway, one guy was twitching and another was talking to himself, two people were making out in a way that should be reserved for a private place, a woman put her hairy armpit in my face and I swear I saw another woman’s pubes poking through her pants. I looked around for someone, anyone, normal, and I found him! I tried to make eye contact in a way that said, “At least we have each other” but then he started twitching and doing weird things with his mouth and something wet dripped on my head. I think I’ll move to Canyon Ranch.

During a break at work, I checked in with Facebook and saw links to secondary drowning and how to recognize a stroke, stories about spouses dying, children getting electrocuted and mass shootings. I am paralyzed with fear. I can’t leave the building because I might get run over by a car on the sidewalk, but I can’t stay in the building because someone might come in and shoot all of us. My anxiety is making me anxious. I really need to go to Canyon Ranch. It was going to be a preposterous, laughable, no good, very real day.

At lunch, my colleague, Jim, got a turkey sandwich with American cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and coleslaw on a roll, with a chocolate milkshake to wash it down, and another colleague, Tom, got pizza, a large coke, and garlic knots. I had mixed greens with sprouts and a bottle of water. Can’t seem to shed the last 10 pounds of baby weight.

Just as I was settling back into work, my daughter’s school called to tell me that she had puked and that I had to pick her up immediately. It took an hour to get 40 blocks. The puke was all over her brand new shoes and jacket and when I hugged her, the smell was so bad that I threw up a little in my mouth, and then swallowed it. When I dropped my daughter off at home, I noticed that my sitter didn’t look so great. She probably has Ebola. It was a preposterous, laughable, no good, very real day.

Back at the office, my computer was down. Tech support advised me to try restarting it. Maybe I could work for tech support. While my computer was rebooting, I looked over my “to do” list (all 47 items and growing by the second). I have to fill out camp forms for the kids, go on a diet, refill prescriptions, grocery shop, find a group to join (I’m not vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free or raw foods only, so I don’t know where I fit in), get highlights, make photo albums of the kids before they leave for college, register the kids for Fall activities, order food for my son’s birthday party, call a friend, replace the light bulbs, learn to cook, start a blog, call the cable company, teach my son to read, send thank you notes and go to the gym. I took a break from the gym for 15 years. I advise against that. This is the kind of preposterous, laughable, no good, very real day that makes me want to scream, “Screw this, I’m moving to Canyon Ranch!” But who would care?

I knew it was going to be a preposterous, laughable, no good, very real day because I forgot my best friend’s birthday, even though I had reminders in my phone, in Microsoft Outlook and in my written calendar. Yeah, I still keep a written calendar, so what? My friend said she didn’t care that I forgot her birthday but now I bet she’s going to get back at me by “forgetting” my birthday, and then I won’t even have the right to be mad at her. I also pissed off this “cool” woman who I do charity work with, you know the type: she’s really loud because she has nothing intelligent or interesting to say, and you don’t really like or respect her but you have to pretend to and pretend really well or else you’ll have to stand by yourself at the all of the fundraisers. I hope she moves to Canyon Ranch.

I ran into my brother and his colleagues on the way home from work and he specifically reminded me not to ask his boss about his wife, since they’re going through a divorce. I’m usually good at remembering these kinds of things but all the guys looked exactly the same and I forgot which one was his boss and asked about his wife. After an awkward silence my brother told me not to call him anymore.

It was a preposterous, laughable, no good, very real day.

I made kale and quinoa for dinner even though I hate kale and quinoa. There was no hot water in the shower, my toothpaste was hard, my necklace fell down the drain and I’d already seen the episode of House Hunters that I was counting on to soothe me to sleep. I was out of Ambien, the AC still wasn’t turned on (it’s May!), and my sitter called in sick for tomorrow. You know, because she has Ebola.

It was a preposterous, laughable, no good, very real day.

My shrink says some days are like that. Even at Canyon Ranch.

Power in Numbers: UNITAID, Innovative Financing, and the Quest for Massive Good

Power in Numbers: UNITAID, Innovative Financing, and the Quest for Massive Good

The story of UNITAID begins with two world leaders but quickly becomes a lesson in popular philanthropy, involving millions of people each making a small contribution to a program aimed at treating and ultimately eliminating the threat of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria in the developing world. In partnership with the Clinton HIV/AIDS Initiative (CHAI), UNICEF, and other organizations, UNITAID has pioneered techniques for raising massive amounts of money from a wide pool of donors. UNITAID’s newest program, collecting small contributions via a check-box on the world’s biggest travel websites, launches in the United States in January 2010. It is a fascinating model for philanthropy, proving that you can scale up both the fundraising and the ambition of lifesaving treatment programs. Moreover, UNITAID has proved able to continue its work uninterrupted by the financial turmoil that has blighted other private and government aid programs. It provides a model for challenging times. Launched as a crucial component of UNITAID’s “MassiveGood” substantial national publicity and promotion campaign, Power in Numbers is an inspiring case study for anyone interested in social justice, public health, philanthropy, or fundraising.

Virginia Tech Coach Buzz Williams Is A Good Sport About Reading Mean Tweets

Buzz Williams may have lost 22 games in his first season as the basketball coach at Virginia Tech, but he certainly didn’t lose his sense of humor.

In a video he posted Monday, Williams takes a page from “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and reads “mean tweets” about himself.

Some are mean, all right: “He’s got the fattest neck I’ve ever seen.”

“All my stress goes to my neck,” he jokingly replies.

Anyway, props to Williams for being a good sport.

Here Are Gifs Of All The Times Alicia And Kalinda Drank Together On ‘The Good Wife’

Warning: This post contains spoilers from the first six seasons of “The Good Wife,” up to and including the season 6 finale.

When the sixth season of “The Good Wife” came to a close on May 10, it marked the end of one of TV’s most powerful, complicated relationships: Kalicia. Up until this point of the marvelous show, attorney Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies) and investigator Kalinda Sharma (Archie Panjabi) were alternately the best of friends and the bitterest of enemies. There were runs of episodes where they almost always shown together, and much longer runs where they were never in the same room. Gossip around Hollywood chalks the latter up to a vicious but completely mysterious fight between Margulies and Panjabi, which only makes the on-screen relationship between the two characters more fascinating.

Amidst all the turmoil, there was one thing you could count on with these two: They would drink. They loved drinking, a trait they share with several other powerful female protagonists on TV dramas.

So to commemorate their glorious friendship, The Huffington Post combed through six seasons of “The Good Wife” to find all the scenes where Kalicia drank together. Here they are.

    2015-05-18-1431987861-8079182-Season1Episode1AliciaDrinking.gif

The ritual began in the show’s pilot, meaning it predates even the appearance of such staple characters of the show as Eli Gold (Alan Cumming) and David Lee (Zach Grenier). That’s how integral it is to the show! In this first episode, Alicia and Kalinda work together to crack a difficult murder case involving a faked carjacking. After Alicia presents their killer evidence, and the jury goes out to deliberate, Kalinda tells her that it’s a Stern Lockhart & Gardner tradition for lawyers to take tequila shots after their first jury trial.

    2015-05-18-1431987898-1029929-Season1Episode1KalindaDrinking.gif

After Alicia takes her shot, Kalinda reveals that this was a trick: no such tradition exists. For a moment, it seems like Kalinda won’t drink her tequila. But then, of course, she does. Alicia smiles.

    2015-05-18-1431987934-7707923-Season1Episode11KalindaDrinking.gif

The next nine episodes feature lots of interactions between Alicia and Kalinda, but none of them involve alcohol, sadly. They don’t drink together again until the 11th episode. Even then, it’s not in a bar, but in a room in their office: they drink beer and eat kettle corn while watching TV news related to the two cases of the week.

    2015-05-18-1431988039-8472490-Season1Episode14KalindaDrinking.gif

In episode 14, though, Alicia and Kalinda hit the bar again, because they have some personal matters to discuss. (Glenn Childs has asked Kalinda to testify against Alicia’s husband Peter.) This time, Kalinda orders a dark beer…

    2015-05-18-1431988092-6262329-Season1Episode14AliciaDrinking.gif

…while Alicia drinks what looks like tequila again. But she sips it instead of shooting it.

    2015-05-18-1431988156-9689967-Season1Episode21AliciaDrinking.gif

This drinking session apparently goes well, because they go to another bar in episode 21. Alicia drinks what appears to be a martini with olives.

    2015-05-18-1431988182-9482663-Season1Episode21KalindaDrinking.gif

    Kalinda gets another dark beer.

    2015-05-18-1431988228-9069830-Season1Episode22BothDrinking.gif

The very next episode, the second-to-last of season 1, opens with Alicia and Cary finding out that Alicia got the one full-time position they had been competing for all season. Kalinda waits for Alicia down the hall and, knowing that Alicia will likely feel crummy for beating out Cary, insists that they go to get drinks. They start by ordering two tequila shots in a row.

    2015-05-18-1431988316-6076505-Season1Episode22AliciaDrinking.gif

They keep drinking, as is evident from the plethora of glasses that accumulate on the bar top.

    2015-05-18-1431988346-6286008-Season1Episode22KalindaDrinking.gif

All that tequila gets them pretty wasted. A cute, younger guy hits on them, sending them into a giggle fit. He buys them yet another round of drinks.

    2015-05-18-1431988373-3979951-Season1Episode22AliciaDrinkingAgain.gif

These extra drinks send them into the truthbomb-dropping stage of drunkenness, prompting Alicia to ask Kalinda whether she’s a lesbian.

Kalinda refuses to answer, much to Alicia’s chagrin. But then a call to Alicia’s cell phone saves her. Will tells Alicia she has to go see a client, so she composes herself and goes to Colin Sweeney’s house, where she finds him handcuffed to a dead female body. Alicia maintains admirable composure, considering her inebriation. Close call!

    2015-05-18-1431988410-1505446-Season2Episode6KalindaDrinking.gif

Alicia and Kalinda next drink together in the sixth episode of season two, at an office party to celebrate a huge class action settlement. While drinking champagne, Alicia notes that Kalinda doesn’t look as happy as everyone else at the firm.

    2015-05-18-1431988573-2916275-Season2Episode9AliciaDrinking.gif

Just three episodes later, in “Nine Hours,” one of the best episodes of the entire series, Alicia and Kalinda work on a stressful death row case from Alicia’s apartment. At a particularly trying moment, Alicia grabs them two beers out of the fridge.

    2015-05-18-1431988636-9835993-Season2Episode9BothDrinking.gif

They drink them on Alicia’s bed. Slash fic alert!

    2015-05-18-1431989198-858921-Season2Episode17BothDrinking.gif

They actually only visit a bar one time in the second season, in the 17th episode. They return to their beloved tequila shots.

A couple episodes later, Alicia discovers that Kalinda had slept with Peter, one time, many years ago, before they were friends. She’s completely furious. The revelation creates a rift between her and Peter — and, more importantly, between her and Kalinda. Throughout most of season 3, they only speak when work requires them to. Some have speculated that the real-life tiff between Julianna Margulies and Archie Panjabi first emerged around this time, though Margulies attributed the break to natural developments in the plot.

    2015-05-18-1431989242-7090087-Season3Episode22KalindaDrinking.gif

In any case, they finally drink together again in the final episode of season 3. Though it begins as a kind of “Parent Trap” situation — Cary invited them both to the same bar — they actually manage to have a bit of fun.

    2015-05-18-1431989277-8133208-Season3Episode22AliciaDrinking.gif

They even take tequila shots together!

    2015-05-18-1431989347-2365038-Season4Episode6KalindaDrinking.gif

This bar visit sets off something of a renaissance in their friendship. They visit bars three times in the first half of season 4. They sip red wine and whiskey in episode 6.

    2015-05-18-1431989381-2828868-Season4Episode9AliciaDrinking.gif

Cary joins them for some cocktails of an indeterminate nature in episode 9.

    2015-05-18-1431989741-77136-Season4Episode10AliciaDrinking.gif

And then in episode 10, they go back to tequila shots. Kalinda is uncharacteristically late to the drinks in this episode, which worries Alicia.

    2015-05-18-1431989768-8150781-Season4Episode10KalindaDrinking.gif

When she shows up, a few minutes after Alicia takes her first shot, she reveals that the drama surrounding her relationship with her erratic husband is over. What exactly happened to him is unclear, though when Kalinda says there’s no chance of his ever returning, it’s hard not to suspect that she killed him. He was a jerk, though, so this is an occasion for tequila.

    2015-05-18-1431989799-8829444-Season4Episode11KalindaBringsWine.gif

One of the sweetest of their drinks sessions comes in the next episode, when Alicia is staying at a remote hotel while waiting to be allowed to depose a key witness in a case. Kalinda brings her fresh clothes — and a bottle of red wine.

    2015-05-18-1431989853-9096019-Season4Episode11NeitherDrinking.gif

They lie in side-by-side beds glumly, chatting about this and that while drinking glasses of red wine. It’s cute. It seems like maybe they’re on track to be best friends again.

But then — nothing. In a big way.

Alicia and Kalinda see each other briefly in the next episode, but after that, don’t share a scene for more than two seasons after this hotel tryst. There’s no on-screen blowout to explain their bizarre separation, so this is when many (starting with Buzzfeed) speculated that Panjabi and Margulies got in some terrible fight. No one in the press has ever managed to figure out what transpired; it’s one of the best-kept secrets in Hollywood.

Whatever happened, though — and something must have happened — it kept Alicia and Kalinda apart right up until the very end of season 6.

    2015-05-19-1432057374-1243209-Season6Episode21TugOfWar.gif

They sort of reunite in the season’s penultimate episode, after Kalinda has fled town to avoid being killed by Lemond Bishop, when Alicia thinks back to two times they’d met before. But the flashback scenes are either filmed in such a way that the two actresses may never have even been in the same room, or are repurposed footage from season 1. Fun fact, though: although this same tug-of-war over Alicia’s phone was shown in the drunken bar night in Season 1, Episode 22, the exact moment above is shot from two different camera angles in the two episodes.

    2015-05-18-1431992398-6464942-Season6Episode22KalindaOrdering.gif

In the season 6 finale, they finally reunite for real. Kalinda surprises Alicia at a bar just before she leaves town for good. She orders two tequila shots for old time’s sake.

    2015-05-18-1431992366-6225483-Season6Episode22AliciaDrinking.gif

Then, though, something curious happens: Most of the shots in the scene show only one of the two actresses clearly. For that reason, many people started to speculate that they hadn’t actually filmed most of it together.

    2015-05-18-1431992454-480308-Season6Episode22BothDrinking.gif

On May 15, TVLine reported, based on some anonymous inside intel, that the scene had indeed been faked. The shots that show only one face clearly were filmed with body doubles filling in for the obscured actor, while Panjabi and Margulies filmed the shots that include both characters separately, and then the footage was merged together in post-production.

    2015-05-18-1431992526-68236-Season6Episode22Goodbye.gif

The fact that Panjabi and Margulies couldn’t overcome their rumored enmity even for a day of filming made the parting — likely the last time these two characters ever see each other, since Kalinda is now officially on the lam — even sadder. Kalicia is, or, was, a friendship for the ages. These drinking buddies will live in our hearts and livers forever. And we look forward to revisiting the early season heyday of their relationship many times to come.

Charlize Theron: ‘Girls Need To Know That Being A Feminist Is A Good Thing’

Every time Charlize Theron opens her mouth we fall in love with her more and more.

In a recent interview for ELLE UK’s June 2015 issue, the Oscar-winning actress discussed her experiences with the wage gap in Hollywood and how she refuses to be objectified by filmmakers.

She stressed that women need to stand up for themselves when it comes to being paid fairly — starting with simply asking to be. “I have to give them credit because once I asked, they said yes. They did not fight it,” she said. “And maybe that’s the message: That we just need to put our foot down.”

She went on to define feminism and explain why it’s so integral to achieving pay equality. “This is a good time for us to bring this to a place of fairness, and girls need to know that being a feminist is a good thing,” Theron said. “It doesn’t mean that you hate men. It means equal rights. If you’re doing the same job, you should be compensated and treated in the same way.”

    charlize theron

Theron has repeatedly stood up against the wage gap. After the massive Sony Pictures hack that revealed many actresses were paid much less than their male co-stars in recent films, Theron used the leaked information to ensure pay equality with her male co-star in her film “The Huntsman.”

“When I thought about the temperature out there — with finding out what Jennifer and Amy were being paid on a set with guy actors who are their counterparts… They’re just as good as any of the guys on there. Yeah, that p*ssed me off!” Theron told ELLE.

The 39-year-old actress also discussed what it’s like being objectified as a woman in Hollywood. “Someone thought it was a good idea to market almost the entire movie on me; objectifying me a little bit,” she said. “I got a lot of attention from it, but the problem was that, afterwards, it was like, ‘We want you to do that again. Can you just do that?’ And so I didn’t work for almost two years.”

    You do you, Charlize.

Head over to ELLE UK to read more from Theron.

Why a Good God Allows Bad Things to Happen

Why a Good God Allows Bad Things to Happen

David Arnold, President and Founder of World Evangelistic Outreach, has more than 30 years experience in the field of missions. Dr. Arnold, upon graduation from college, was pastor of a church for 14 years in Kreamer, PA; a town of 400 people. The church experienced an amazing growth of over 600 people in attendance each Sunday. In 1982 God called Dave into the work of missions with the sole purpose of encouraging God’s work and workers around the world. Under WEO’s leadership there were churches built in Romania, Haiti, and both East and West Africa. WEO has spent the last 18 years working in Sierra Leone West Africa. During a 10 year rebel war WEO sent tons of medical supplies, food, clothing, and other necessities to keep thousands of refugees and displaced people alive. Currently, WEO has built 16 churches and 18 schools with more than 4,000 children learning to read and write but most of all learning about Christ, resulting in many coming to know Him as savior. In 2009 David received his Masters Degree in theology.

Built For Show: Four Body-changing Workouts For Building Muscle, Losing Fat, Andlooking Good Eno Ugh To Hook Up

Every guy is looking for an edge, some way to get single women his age to notice him more than they do now. Unfortunately, most guys have absolutely no idea what kind of body automatically flips a girl''s attraction switch. Nate Green does. Built for Show is the first fitness book to address young men on the prowl. It’s not just written for them; it’s written by one of them. Green, who’s just twenty- three years old, is already a veteran fitness professional who’s been quoted in Men’s Health and Maximum Fitness magazines. Green offers four twelve- week workout programs, each with a seasonal theme. The fall and winter workouts add muscle size and strength that’ll show even under layers of clothing. The spring and summer workouts burn fat and chisel the showpiece muscles—creating a lean, cut, beach-ready physique. But Built for Show is more than just a workout book. It also provides: · Realistic nutrition advice to feed the muscles and starve the fat without breaking the bank or spending hours in the kitchen · Tips on dressing right, looking the part, improving your social status, and settling into your new lifestyle · Quick ways to assess posture, with useful exercises to fix flaws and improve self- presentation, no matter the situation. The detailed programs include over fifty exercises, illustrated with over one hundred original photos. Neither a weight-loss guide nor a body- building manual, Built for Show instead reveals to guys exactly what they need to build the body they – and women – want.Read Nate Green''s posts on the Penguin Blog.

5 Reasons Being ‘Good in Bed’ Won’t Make Him Put a Ring on It

I had a knack for dating men who didn’t want to marry. Which was fine, because I didn’t want to marry. Until I did.

When I was dating my last commitment-phobic man he made it very clear that sex was his top priority in a relationship and that he was terrified that marriage would put an end to it.

So for the entirety of our five-year relationship I said “no” to sex only once.

I remember the fallout from that as if it happened yesterday instead of 15 years ago.

My man rolled on his back in bed and began kicking his feet and tantruming like a 2-year-old, “I want sex, I want sex, I want sex!”

The truth is it was a funny moment between us. He meant to sound like a toddler begging for a cookie and I found it endearing. We had our good moments.

But I think we were particularly close on that one night (an oasis in a shitastrophy) and I felt, like a contestant on American Idol, that I was safe till next week.

The rest of the time I worried that, as a tall, strapping, handsome fireman, my beau might give in to the temptation of all the badge bunnies sniffing around the station during his overnight shifts.

I hoped, by being an all-night convenience store for sex, he might stay faithful (he didn’t). And I also wanted him to know that he could count on non-stop sex if he married me (he didn’t).

Here’s why using sex to audition for wife will fail every time:

    1. Men who are afraid of commitment will be able to smell something rotten in Denmark (even when you’ve showered).

Commitment-phobes are like blood hounds when it comes to agendas. They can smell you gaming them over any camouflaging pheromones you emit.

    2. Men who are afraid of commitment often feel smothered by having sex with you.

And they will react against being smothered by having sex with the next available female in order to rid themselves of the obligation sex makes them feel toward you.

    3. Having sex with a man in order to convince him you’d be a good wife puts too much pressure on the lovemaking.

Can you say performance anxiety? It’s incredibly difficult to actually enjoy sex when you’re using it as a weapon. And no matter how well you can fake an orgasm, a man can tell when you aren’t authentically turned on.

    4. Having sex with a man to convince him to marry you is self-abandonment.

Whenever we give another person power over us we lose ourselves and often abandon our principals and the things we value.

There’s nothing less appealing than a woman who has no self-esteem and is willing to ditch herself to win a man.

    5. If you do manage to convince a commitment-phobe to marry you based on the gymnastic, never-ending sex you provide, you will have to keep this up forever.

Do you really want to be married to someone you have to turn somersaults for day-after-day, year-after-year for fear if you don’t he’ll want out?

Now add to that the pressures of raising children and making a living.

There’s no doubt that sex is incredibly important to a good, healthy marriage, but man cannot live on lust fulfillment alone. Building your marriage on sex is like building it on the Louisiana bog of Naked and Afraid. It’s bound to sink and someone’s bound to be killed by a water mocassin. Yes, that could happen.

    Good Owner’s Clock Guide

    Good Owner’s Clock Guide

Are you the owner of an antique or collectable clock, or are you likely to become an owner in the foreseeable future? If so, the ‘Good Owner’s Clock Guide and Clock Logbook’, consisting of two books packaged as one, gives guidance on all aspects of the safe operation, care and custodianship of domestic clocks and will provide an invaluable record.’The Good Owner’s Clock Guide’ gives the reader all the necessary information to enable him or her to make an accurate assessment of a clock’s originality, condition and quality. Advice is given on restoration and repairers/restorers and there are useful tips on buying and selling clocks and initial pointers for research into the clock’s maker and its overall history. As Eliot Isaacs says in his foreword, the average owner or collector, whilst appreciating a clock’s artistic beauty and its value, ‘often has insufficient knowledge to know when maintenance is required or to recognize when simple changes have been made, let alone be able to describe any repairs or other alterations in sufficient detail to be of help to future owners. This book sets out to be of help to remedy this state of affairs, and is long overdue’.’The Good Owner’s Clock Logbook’ will provide a full and permanent record of all aspects of a clock for all eventualities. It will prove invaluable for the owner for a wide diversity of purposes ranging from verification of provenance to information for insurance purposes, and will also be of great benefit if the clock is sold.’The Good Owner’s Clock Guide and Clock Logbook’ is unique in its presentation and format and is destined to become the clock owner’s bible.

A-Sides with Jon Chattman:: Good “Chemistry” with Plaid Brixx; Goapele “Moves Forward”

Let’s be honest pop junkies – anytime you hear the word “chemistry,” you instantly think of cooking with White and Pinkman. PLAID BRIXX is about to change that in 2005 with the release of their EP and single of the same name. Mix pop and rock, and throw in a dash of punk, and you’ve got the New York band fronted by Chris Duggan. The five-track EP is crafted better than a Pottery Barn quilt (they make quilts right?) and should get some considerable airplay in the near future. At the A-Sides Studio/Listening Room at Primary Wave Music in New York City, Duggan performed a track and chatted it up as part of an A-Sides session. Before you click the videos, know this about Duggan: he knows his shiatsu, having a degree from NYU’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music. Anyway, watch below and have some better living in “Chemistry.” Filmed by Joe Ades.

    “Chemistry”

Like PLAID BRIXX, Goapele (pronounced gwa-puh-lay) is a gifted musician who seems just about ready to break through to the mainstream after working ferociously and fearlessly over the last decade plus. The singer, whose name appropriately means “to move forward” in Setswana, dropped her fourth album Strong As
    Glass
last fall, and spawned a killer first single in “Hey Boy,” which was co-written by Estelle.
has been working ferociously and fearlessly in the music industry for over a decade. The American soul and R&B artist’s eclectic album is delightfully (and intentionally) all over the place with an R&B, rock, pop, and singer/songwritery and poetic feel. Listen to it, and watch my interview (filmed by Joe Ades) with the Bay area native below. You know you love it.

    A-Sides 3rd Anniversary Show
On Jan. 23, A-Sides will celebrate its third anniversary (about six months too late), at Garcia’s within The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY. The show will feature a mix of music and comedy including buzz band Dreamers and buzz comic Nore Davis. Get tickets now and support the brand and the man behind it (who has two kids under 3 and is very, very broke.)

    A-Sides “Delve Into Twelve” Countdown
Each week A-Sides unleashes its Top 12 tracks of the week AKA the “Delve Into Twelve”based on the following contributing factors: songs I’m playing out that particular week NO MATTER WHEN THEY WERE RELEASED (think overlooked songs, unreleased tracks, and old favorites), songs various publicists are trying to get me to listen to that I did and dug a bunch, posts and trends I’ve noticed on my friends’ Facebook walls, and — most importantly — the songs my two-year-old-plus son gravitates toward by stomping his feet in approval. Yeah, you read that right. This weeks follows below (LW= last week’s rank).

    12. “Blank Space” (LW-12) – Taylor Swift
    11. “Hymnals” (LW-6) – Grizfolk
    10. “Pray to God” (debut) – Calvin Harris/Haim
    9. “I Can’t Stop Drinking About You” (LW-9) – Bebe Rehxa
    8. “First” (LW-7) – Cold War Kids (Watch their exclusive A-Sides performance here.)
    7. “Break the Rules” (LW-8) – Charli XCX
    6. “Push Pull” (debut) – Purity Ring
    5. “Mess is Mine” (LW-4) – Vance Joy (Watch his exclusive performance of the song for A-Sides here!)
    4. “Shut Up and Dance” (LW-2) – Walk the Moon
    3. “Lampshades on Fire” (LW-5) – Modest Mouse
    2. “Somebody New” (LW-3) – Joywave
    1. “O” (LW-1) – Coldplay

    About A-Sides with Jon Chattman:
Jon Chattman’s music series features celebrities and artists (established or not) from all genres of music performing a track, and discussing what it means to them. This informal series focuses on the artist making art in a low-threatening, extremely informal (sometime humorous) way. No bells, no whistles — just the music performed in a random, low-key setting followed by an unrehearsed chat. In an industry where everything often gets overblown and over manufactured, Jon strives for a refreshing change. Artists have included fun., Charli XCX, Imagine Dragons, Alice Cooper, Joe Perry, Gary Clark Jr., American Authors, Echosmith, and many, many more!
