Here’s When Stranger Things Season 4 Might Premiere

This post contains spoilers for Stranger Things Season 3, and the newly released Season 4 teaser trailer.

[poilib element=”accentDivider”]

Chances are you’re desperately counting down the days to when Stranger Things Season 4 will premiere. We’ve broken down all the biggest questions about the future of the Netflix sci-fi hit below, and will keep this post updated with new developments as they are announced.

Netflix officially renewed Stranger Things for a fourth season back in September 2019. The news came with a statement from Netflix’s Chief Content Officer, Ted Sarandos:

“The Duffer Brothers have captivated viewers around the world with Stranger Things and we’re thrilled to expand our relationship with them to bring their vivid imaginations to other film and series projects our members will love. We can’t wait to see what the Duffer Brothers have in store when they step outside the world of The Upside Down.”

Stranger Things Season 4 Trailer

So far, Netflix has released one trailer for Season 4 of Stranger Things, which gives us our first glimpse of David Harbor’s Jim Hopper (HE’S ALIVE) in what appears to be a prison camp in Russia. The streamer revealed the teaser trailer on Valentine’s Day 2020, with the caption, “From Russia With Love…” Watch the teaser below:

When Will New Episodes of Stranger Things 4 Release on Netflix?

Netflix hasn’t set a release date for Season 4 yet, but the Season 3 finale may give us some clues for when Stranger Things Season 4 will take place: Before Joyce, Will, Jonathan, and Eleven move away from Hawkins at the end of the episode, Mike and Eleven discuss visiting each other for Thanksgiving and Christmas of that year.

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=stranger-things-season-3-gallery&captions=true”]

While the events of Season 1 technically happened in November (and prominently featured Christmas lights) we have yet to see the show tackle Thanksgiving or Christmas – and a Christmas setting could pave the way for some awesome ’80s homages to the likes of Gremlins, Die Hard (again!), or Silent Night, Deadly Night. Season 2 took place around Halloween, while Season 3 is set in the summer in the days leading up to July 4, so if the show wants to continue with a holiday theme, Christmas would make sense – although the young cast may age too quickly for the show to believably pull off Season 4 taking place just a few months after Season 3.

In terms of when Stranger Things will actually premiere, we can look to its previous drops on Netflix for some clues. Season 1 premiered in July 2016, Season 2 in October 2017, and Season 3 in July 2019. If the Duffer brothers continue to follow this pattern, then we can assume Season 4 could premiere in October 2020. However, the show is still in the early stages of production, with plenty of shooting and post-production work ahead. So, with Season 4’s narrative possibly taking place during Christmas, perhaps a December 2020 release date isn’t out of the question?

Is Stranger Things 4 the Last Season?

Back in August 2017, the Duffer brothers gave an interview in which they said Stranger Things would end after Season 4. “We think it will be a four-season thing and then out,” Ross Duffer told Vulture.

Matt Duffer added that continuing the show past that point was possible: “We just have to keep adjusting the story,” he said, but noted, “I don’t know if we can justify something bad happening to them once a year.” Then again, a lot can change in two years, and Shawn Levy certainly seemed to think a Season 5 was on the table as recently as last April.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2016/09/23/the-stranger-things-kids-try-british-snacks”]

Season 3 expanded on the threat of the Upside Down by revealing that the Russian military was also investigating the creepy alternate dimension, potentially seeking to weaponize the creatures inhabiting the Upside Down, like the Demogorgon. That leaves a lot of narrative ground still to explore, in addition to the fact that we’ve had very little explanation into the mythology of the Upside Down, what the Mind Flayer actually wants, or why people seem so eager to venture into a creepy parallel universe full of deadly monsters in the first place.

Although Netflix doesn’t release ratings information for most of its series, Stranger Things has inarguably become a global phenomenon. According to third-party reports, is the most popular streaming show on the web, even when it’s between seasons, so there’s no reason to think that Netflix would cancel Stranger Things before the Duffer Brothers choose to end it. (If anything, the streaming network might encourage the Duffers to stretch it longer, as HBO reportedly tried to do with Game of Thrones.)

What Will Stranger Things Season 4 Be About?

Now that we have a Season 4 teaser trailer featuring Hopper alive and (mostly) well, we can assume that some of the stories will take place in Russia. While Netflix hasn’t released a full Season 4 synopsis, it did reveal a few details about Hopper in a press release message from the Duffer Brothers:

“We’re excited to officially confirm that production on Stranger Things 4 is now underway — and even more excited to announce the return of Hopper! Although it’s not all good news for our American; he is imprisoned far from home in the snowy wasteland of Kamchatka, where he will face dangers both human…and other. Meanwhile, back in the states, a new horror is beginning to surface, something long-buried, something that connects everything.”

With Hopper still in the mix, we expect Season 4 to delve much deeper into the mechanics of the Upside Down and what it might be used for: an army of attack-dog Demogorgons that Russia intends to release on an unsuspecting American public? A new energy source (since the Mind Flayer sure lets out a lot of lightning)? At this point, any explanation into the rules of the Upside Down would be welcome – and we also need to know why the Russians are forcing their prisoners to build a train track – what are they trying to transport?

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/07/04/stranger-things-season-3-what-happened-to-spoiler”]

We also expect Season 4 to explore what happened to Hopper while he was in the Upside Down and how he got out. From the teaser trailer, it’s difficult to ascertain exactly what kind of mental state Hopper is in, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see him utilized as a new host for the Mind Flayer (or maybe the Russians will brainwash and Winter Soldier him) just to up the emotional stakes for Eleven next season. The show will also no doubt need to deal with Eleven’s lost powers and how she gets them back.

The show has a few other loose ends to tie up before it’s over: Season 2 introduced Eleven’s “sister” from Dr. Brenner’s experiment, Eight, aka Kali – and even though fans weren’t wild about that episode, there are still a whole bunch of other super-powered kids out there who might come in handy against the Mind Flayer. We need to learn more about those experiments and the kids that were created as a result. We also need to learn the whereabouts of Dr. Brenner himself since right now he’s a Chekhov’s Gun that’s still hanging over Eleven.

And between the Byers family leaving Hawkins and the introduction of Russia, the show finally has an opportunity to expand beyond its small-town setting. Season 3 established that the town is special – at least when it comes to opening the gate to the Upside Down – but Alexei also revealed that there were other gates and other keys, which gives this conspiracy a much wider scope.

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=the-15-best-horror-tv-shows-of-the-last-10-years&captions=true”]

Since half of the main characters are still in Hawkins, we’re probably not going to leave the town entirely (and hopefully people will actually start asking questions about the disappearances of so many Hawkins residents, including the newspaper’s editor and a couple of young lifeguards) but it would be nice to explore other parts of the Stranger Things universe. Still, given that the end of Season 3 also introduced the concept of “Satanic Panic” as a way of exploring the weird goings-on in Hawkins, that rising hysteria could also play a role in Season 4.

What do you hope to see in Stranger Things Season 4? Share your theories and predictions in the comments.

Here’s How Jed Bartlet’s Administration Vetted Refugees On ‘The West Wing’

The debate taking place about Syrian refugees in the wake of the Paris attacks — over whether to halt refugee resettlement or, as some GOP presidential candidates suggested this week, to only allow “proven” Christian Syrians into the U.S.  – actually took place years ago in a fictional White House.

In Season 2 of NBC’s popular show “The West Wing,” President Josiah “Jed” Bartlet’s administration is faced with the question of what to do with a group of Christians who left China in hopes of attaining refugee status in the United States.

As one the president’s aides, Josh Lyman, points out, one challenge is that refugees may ”feign faith” to prove that they are being oppressed for their religious beliefs. It is at that point that the president proposes sitting down personally with one of the Chinese refugees to gauge the veracity of his Christian faith — and is pleasantly rewarded by the outcome.

It’s not identical to today’s debate, but the comparison is one that “West Wing” fans will surely appreciate.

Here’s Why Hedgehogs Are The Greatest Creatures On Earth

Oh sorry, were you not aware that hedgehogs reign superior in the animal kingdom? Well, we have news for you. They do. They are just SO. DAMN. CUTE! But if that’s not enough to convince you, no worries, we’ve anticipated this. Just give us five minutes of your time and you’ll never doubt it again.

Once upon a time, a pinecone, a cactus and a nugget had a baby. No other way to explain the birth of the greatest creature known to man, honestly.

Why should you care about these little guys, you ask? Uh, you mean, other than the fact that they’re teeny tiny cutie pies?

Well, hedghogs fit perfectly in the palm of your hand.

They’re so adorably small, they fit right inside your coffee mug. Which means there’s definitely room for them in your heart.

Their soft little hands and feet are perfect to hold.

Their miniature velvety ears are soft and snuggly.

They make the ultimate travel companion.

A photo posted by Biddy (@biddythehedgehog) on

They’re basically Olympian athletes.

And are always up for adventure.

Some hedgehogs are even a little glamorous. Move over, Beyoncé.

Their quills may be spiky but that doesn’t mean you can’t pet them.

And they’re always down to hang in the great outdoors. Picnic, anyone?

Hedgehogs are nocturnal so they’re always ready to party the night away.

A photo posted by @hedgehog_bb on

They’re probably better sunrise-watching buddies than a SO, tbh.

They also love to binge watch Netflix shows in bed all night long. Sounds familiar? Could this be your spirit animal?

Their rosy little tongues are the best.

A photo posted by Biddy (@biddythehedgehog) on

They’re not picky eaters.

But their favorite treat of all is meal worms. And even though worms are kind of gross, they look so happy eating them, you can’t even hate. You do you, baby hedge!

Hedgehogs are so photogenic they’re the perfect model for major Instagram clout.

Just look at this magical Quidditch star.

And this diehard Taylor Swift fan.

Basically any object you place next to a hedgehog suddenly becomes adorable. Seriously. Just look at this thing!

When a hedgehog sleeps it’s probably the cutest thing in the entire world.

Though they’re a little shy at first, they totally get along with other animals. What social butterflies!

A photo posted by Biddy (@biddythehedgehog) on

And when they’re scared, they get even smaller and curl into a little ball of love.

What’s better than a regular hedgehog? Bath time hedgehog!

AND THEY FLOAT!!!

Belly rubs are like heaven to them. It really doesn’t take much to keep them happy.

They love playing hide and seek (and are surprisingly good at it).

Really, these fashionable lil’ babes just make the world a brighter place.

Still not convinced that hedghogs are the best? Maybe this vine of hedgehogs being muffins will help.

What’s not to love?!

What happens when a go-go boy ages out of his profession?

Actor and writer Jimmy Fowlie explores this idea through his hilarious project “Go-Go Boy Interrupted,” a web series born from his sketch comedy show of the same name.

The first season left us dying for more and now Fowlie and his team are engaged in a Kickstarter campaign to fund the second season.

“When I first moved to L.A., I worked as a go-go dancer and there were so many hilarious stories that I always wanted to write about them,” Fowlie notes on his Kickstarter campaign. “A year ago, I filmed seven sketches that followed the story of a go-go boy who turned 30 and then got fired from the club he worked at. I called it ‘Go-Go Boy Interrupted.’ It was part of a live show I was doing at The Groundlings in Los Angeles. Some friends encouraged me to put it online, and so I released it as a weekly web series last October.”

Check out the video for the “Go-Go Boy Interrupted” Kickstarter above or head here to visit the campaign itself.

Gigi Hadid, Martha Hunt, Hailee Steinfeld, Cara Delevingne, Selena Gomez, Taylor Swift, Seraya, Mariska Hargitay, Lily Aldridge, and Karlie Kloss make a grand entrance at the VMAs.

Kim Kardashian West and sister Kylie Jenner were more subdued than usual. Kardashian-West wore a tan Balmain safari dress with cargo pockets, while Kylie wore a natural-colored rope macrame mini dress, also from Balmain. See all the looks in detail below and tell us your favorite in the comments!

Here’s What The MTV VMAs Looked Like In 2005

It was only a decade ago,  but photos from the 2005 MTV VMAs feel like they happened in another lifetime.

Held at the American Airlines Arena in Miami for the second year in a row, the 21st annual VMAs were a weird storm — literally — as many of the pre-show actives were canceled as Hurricane Katrina hit Southern Florida, passing over Miami.

With the 2015 VMAs days away, let’s remember that 10 years ago Diddy hosted, Green Day took home Video of the Year, Kanye West nabbed Best Male Video, and The Killers were named Best New Artist. Also, pop-punk was heavily repped.

Here’s What a Princess Wears on Vacation

When most royals head out on holiday, it’s a private affair, with people working very hard to keep it paparazzi-free (a lawsuit involving Kate Middleton’s vacation snaps might have helped to cement the lens-free status of most trips). The privacy means photographs are hard to come by, but Instagram can occasionally give us a little glimpse.

Greece’s Princess Olympia has been busy posting some snaps of her various summer vacations, and the young royal is definitely a future best-dressed hall-of-famer. The 19-year-old lives in London with her family but spent some relaxing time in Greece this summer and most recently has touched down in the Bahamas.

Princess Beatrice, cousin to Prince William, has attracted some attention from the British press for her frequent vacationing. Most recently, she’s been enjoying the summer sun on Roman Abramovich’s yacht. Seen stepping from the massive vessel onto a smaller speedboat, the royal is visible in a flimsy, lightweight printed dress.

princess-beatrice-yacht-holiday-vacation

Europe’s royals also love a ski holiday, which requires an entirely different set of laid-back, relaxed clothes. On Queen Maxima‘s annual trip in 2013, she picked a monochromatic ski look that seemed impossibly chic when you remember everything is bulky and down-filled. And whenever Kate Middleton’s been spotted with the royal family on their ski trips (pre- and post-wedding), she’s looked pulled-together and sporty.

PS: Wish that Kate and other royals could have personal Instagram accounts like Olympia? The young princess doesn’t have to adhere to the same sort of rules that likely affect what others can share personally since the Greek monarchy was actually abolished in 1974 (they’re permitted to keep their titles as a courtesy).

I Wore Melissa McCarthy’s Clothing Line for a Week and Here’s What It Looked Like

After being in the works for over a year, Melissa McCarthy’s clothing line is finally here. As its September 1 launch approaches, the funny lady is putting all jokes aside and getting serious about making her mark in fashion.

“I was not OK with the [plus-size fashion landscape], so I decided to do what I could to change it,” she told Glamour at a preview of her first-ever fashion line, Melissa McCarthy Seven7, which will be sold in Nordstrom, Macy’s, and Lane Bryant stores. “A size 14 is the number one size in the country, and we’re telling those women something’s wrong with them by sticking plus-size clothing with the tires and not in the women’s department. We need to stop thinking of plus-size women and just think of women. We need to stop putting everyone in these categories and putting a negative spin on it. Women do not stop at a 12, so why should clothes?”

Melissa-McCarthy-Seven7

On that note, McCarthy’s collection will be made in an extensive range of sizes, from a 4 to 28—and feature basics, signature prints, and her hand-picked must-haves. “I thought, What do I wear in a week? I designed selfishly with things I want in my own closet,” said the actress. “I wanted to do basics with great detail that are easy to mix—all so that the customer can dress for her mood.”

Overall, the collection is super wearable and will be easy to integrate into anyone’s closet. Our favorite pieces? The long-line knit vest, printed Le Meow sweater (side note: her seven-year-old daughter Vivian drew that graphic!), and uber-flattering pencil skirt. Don’t just take our word for it—check out how to wear the collection IRL, right here:

MM-collection-03

Monday: Sweater
“Needing a little more on your bust does not mean that your wrist is the size of a stop sign!” says McCarthy. “I don’t think people have necessarily looked at the clothing on the body. I went to every fitting and got down on my hands and knees pinning to make the clothes proportional. You can’t just grade up the cuts of clothing, you have to make adjustments in design.”

MM-collection-01

Tuesday: Checkered Skirt
The designer explained, “I wore all the pieces for a full day and made adjustments after that. At first, the waistband in the skirt was a little too tight. I changed that and some lengths too. With those adjustments and everything that’s in there as a base, it’s like a built-in foundation. You don’t need to double up and wear all the underpinnings [like Spanx].”

MM-collection-04-MOD

Wednesday: Checkered Pants
“Somebody said to me, ‘Oh, no one plus-size wants a patterned pant!’ But I was making patterned pants for myself all the time—because I can’t find them in stores—and people were asking me where I got them,” she says.

MM-collection-05

Thursday: Knit Vest
“The basics are stylish but really versatile,” says McCarthy. “With the simpler pieces, I want the woman to be the statement. The long-lines are a little chicer and really forgiving. If you don’t like it, nothing’s easier than taking up a hem.”

MM-collection-02

Friday: Flannel Shirt
“I think we do so much tearing down of women. In the same amount of time with the same amount of energy, you can lift them up. If me doing a clothing line that’s like, ‘Yeah, wear the checkered pants! Wear the flannel! Wear the damn cheetah print, I beg you!’ helps lift them up, that’s amazing. We only get one go around, have a little fun,” she says. Amen!

From Marilyn Monroe to Madonna, Here’s a Brief History of the All-American Denim Jacket

If jeans are as American as apple pie, then denim jackets are the vanilla ice cream on top: cool, classic, and always appealing. And while Proenza Schouler, Valentino, and Rachel Comey may have all sent their own trendy iterations down the fall 2015 runways, the denim jacket had already been trending for, oh, just 130 years or so.

The first denim jacket was created circa 1880 by denim legend and Levi’s founder Levi Strauss. Strauss is credited with designing the first-ever jeans in 1870 as a durable, breathable utility garment for cowboys, railroad engineers, and miners to wear during the gold rush out West. Soon after the runaway success of jeans, he gave the world a top to match and dubbed it the Triple Pleat Blouse.

We spoke with Tracey Panek, a historian at Levi Strauss & Co., who said that the denim jackets were ideal for laborers. “Our denim jacket was incredibly durable for various types of manual labor,” Panek said. “The horizontal seams holding down the pleats could be removed to give the wearer extra room.”

While the Levi’s denim jacket has evolved since then, the functionality and innate coolness of the piece has earned it the status as an all-American rebel’s outerwear of choice. “By the ’50s, wearing denim was often associated with juvenile delinquency,” Panek said. “Jeans were even banned in some schools, and denim became the nonconformists’ uniform of choice.” From James Dean’s iconic denim-jacket clad character in Rebel Without a Cause in the ’50s to Rihanna’s deconstructed versions today, jean jackets buck convention, express individuality, and epitomize anti-establishment cool.

Here’s a timeline of denim jackets that will inspire you to pull yours out right now.

levis-denim-jacket-1800sCirca 1880: The original Levi’s Triple Pleat Blouse designed by Strauss. One unique feature of this jacket is the vertical grain of the fabric. Its name is derived from the three pleats that run on either side of the center front.

1955: James Dean captured the angst of American youth and style in Rebel Without a Cause.

1960-marilyn-monroe-corbis

1961: Marilyn Monroe is known for her glamorous red carpet gowns, but her off-duty looks—which included jackets and all sorts of denim— were just as compelling.

1962-getty-german-street-style

1962: Rock ‘n’ roll and denim went hand-in-hand starting in the ’60s, as epitomized by this street style shot in Zurich.

1970-vera-von-lehndorff-getty

1970: It model of the decade Veruschka in a denim jacket and jeans.

john-lennon-1971-cannes

1971: John Lennon wore lots of denim jackets in the ’70s with flares, T-shirts, and always a quirky touch, like this flower boutonniere. Here he is at the Cannes Film Festival.

1980-sarah-jessica-parker-getty

1980: Big shoulders and boxy silhouettes ruled the ’80s, and a 20-year-old Sarah Jessica Parker was on it with her oversize jean jacket.

1994-bruce-springsteen-corbis

1984: Bruce Springsteen’s all-American denim wardrobe on the Born in the USA album made everyone want to dance in their jean jackets in the mid-’80s.

1991-geena-davis-thelma-louise-getty

1991: Geena Davis’ jean jacket in Thelma and Louise was likely the least obvious indicator of her character’s disdain for authority.

1992-claudia-schiffer-corbis

1992: Claudia Schiffer defined ’90s denim with her sultry Guess campaigns.

2001-madonna-ray-of-light-1

2001: Madonna, a fan of the denim jacket in the ’80s, got sleeker for her Ray of Light video with denim-on-denim— and very little underneath.

2001-britney-spears-justin-corbis

2001: Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake expressed their young love with matching denim at the American Music Awards, creating an image now seared into the pop world’s subconscious. Note Justin’s one-button denim blazer.

2013-miley-cyrus-getty

2013: Miley Cyrus used the jean jacket to segue her from sweet Disney star to the edgy Miley of today.

rihanna-nyc-2013

2013: Few can go from couture pouf dresses to shredded denim, but Rihanna certainly pulls it off with aplomb.

levis-commuter-denim-jacket

2015: The Levi’s Trucker jacket, derived from the initial 1880 style, continues to be a classic, and the brand offers many variations on it. The latest is the Commuter, designed for those who commute to work by bike. It features reflective zip tape and ventilations to keep cool.

2015-fall-rachel-comey

2015: Designer Rachel Comey is known for her inventive plays on denim. For fall, she reinvents the denim jacket by adding shearling and zippers for a moto feel.

I Transitioned From Female to Male as a Teen. Here’s My Story

Lots of people are confused by me. First I was a girl who liked girls, and then a boy who liked girls, and now—finally—a dude who likes other dudes. I get it—it is kind of confusing. The best way I’ve heard it explained: Gender is who you want to sleep as, and sexuality is who you want to sleep with. It took me some time to figure out that last part.

Here’s All You Need to Know About the Candidates in Thursday’s GOP Debate

Ten of the Republican Party candidates for president will participate in the first debate of the 2016 Presidential Campaign on Thursday in Cleveland, Ohio.

Fox News, the official network of the GOP, has announced the names of nine of the candidates in the debate. The tenth will either be Ohio Gov. John Kasich or former Texas Gov. Rick Perry. What is it going to be, Fox, beets or liverwurst?

The GOP’s remaining candidates will sit on folding chairs at the back of the auditorium, with forlorn looks on their faces, wondering why they’re not one of the popular kids.

And we’re left to wonder: Why is there a debate in August 2015 for an election that’s 15 months way?

With so many candidates, where can you find the distinctive qualities of each one in a way that gives them the seriousness they deserve?

Right here:

Donald Trump said he would tab Sarah Palin for a top cabinet post if he was elected president. In response, Trump’s candidacy was immediately endorsed by the nation’s comedians, comedy writers, and editorial cartoonists.

Ben Carson said he doesn’t “really want to run” for president. We really don’t want you to run for president either.

Rand Paul said he supported his family’s opposition to the 1964 Civil Rights Act because it meant — and this was his quote — people couldn’t “have cigar bars anymore.” He really said that.

Rick Perry called the murders of nine blacks inside a Charleston, S.C., church an “accident.” This was a massacre. Perry is an accident.

Mike Huckabee does not accept evolution as a science. This is not surprising for someone who has spent so many years in GOP politics.

Mike Huckabee says that rapes, though “horrible tragedies,” have produced admirable human beings. He calls this “compassionate conservatism.”

Chris Christie puts the bully in bully pulpit.

Ted Cruz was not born in the United States. How can he run for president? Has anyone seen his birth certificate? What’s he hiding? He must be Kenyan and a Muslim. And a Socialist. And maybe even a Kardashian.

Marco Rubio gave up a promising career as a ventriloquist after learning while making a nationally televised speech that he could not talk and drink water at the same time.

Donald Trump says that global warming is real, but that it’s untouched by human hands. Like his hair.

As governor of Florida, Jeb Bush reportedly invested $ 1 million in state pension money to fund pornography films. Bush defended himself by saying he wanted to see people do to each other what his family has been doing to the American people for generations.

Rick Perry started wearing glasses to look smart. It hasn’t worked. He just looks like Rick Perry wearing glasses.

Jeb Bush told Fox News that, given the information he now has, he would have supported the invasion of Iraq. This means that George W. isn’t the dumbest Bush, and Rick Perry isn’t the dumbest person running for president.

Scott Walker is the only college dropout among the GOP candidates for president. Rick Perry and Mike Huckabee all graduated from college. How hard can it be?

John Kasich and Scott Walker hope to get elected president by attacking teachers. Why not? It worked so well in China, Iran, and Afghanistan.

AMES, Iowa – Donald Trump attempted to defend his controversial statements about  Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) during a news conference Saturday — but things got heated when he started bickering with reporters.

The real estate mogul-turned-presidential-candidate took questions from reporters following his comments at the Family Leadership Summit in which he questioned whether Arizona Sen. John McCain (R) was a war hero

In a fiery exchange with reporters, Trump raised his voice, often interrupting before a full question was asked.  At one point, he even yelled at one journalist, telling him to “go back to being a pundit.”

“If a person is captured, they’re a hero as far as I’m concerned,” Trump said. “But you have to do other things also. I don’t like the job John McCain is doing in the Senate. He’s not taking care of our veterans.”

Trump went back and forth with reporters, trying to clarify his statements, but the businessman kept giving different answers as if there was some confusion.

“I like the people who don’t get captured and you have many people who didn’t get captured, I respect them greatly,” he said.

When asked about his multiple student deferments and a medical deferment, which allowed him to avoid service, Trump said “millions of other people” took the same option.

“I was going to college and got student deferments,” Trump said to a swarm of media. “It’s a long time ago, student deferments and ultimately a medical deferment because of my feet. I had a bone spur.”

Trump even went on to say he “wasn’t a big fan” of the Vietnam War and had many friends that served and many that also had student deferments.

“I wasn’t a protester, but the Vietnam war was a disaster for our country. What did we get out of the war other than death,” Trump said.

When asked if he would apologize to the Arizona senator, Trump refused.

Here’s How People Really Feel About Their Marriage Proposals

Read this before planning a flash mob or jumbotron marriage proposal.

New research out of the The University of Texas at Austin suggests that most people want a private proposal. And while they usually get what they want in that regard, people’s dream proposal is significantly more romantic than their actual proposal in many cases.

Ph.D. candidates Liz Keneski and Taylor Anne Morgan surveyed nearly 400 newly-engaged and newly-married individuals to understand how they feel about their proposals, engagements and weddings

“What we know from previous research is that relationship transitions, or big changes during relationships, affect how partners view the relationship, how they treat one another, how their friends and family members might view the relationship, and how happy they are in the relationship,” Keneski said. “So we knew that studying engagements and wedding planning…would give us a more complete picture of how relationships grow and change over time.”

Check out some of their results below, and click over to The Science Of Relationships for more.

Here’s What I Have to Say About Your F***ing Neck Tattoo

2015-07-02-1435853928-6212113-Necktat.png

New York Adorned

My name is Lori Leven. I own New York Adorned, a tattoo shop in the East Village that will celebrate its 20th anniversary next July. Over the years, Adorned has been home to several of the greatest tattooers working today. Being in the tattoo business for this amount of time and being a tattoo collector personally for even longer, I would like to relay my experiences.

A few weeks ago, a blogger from Millihelen came into the shop on a busy Saturday looking to get her daughter’s name tattooed on her neck. After explaining to her that we do not tattoo the necks, hands or faces of people who are not heavily tattooed otherwise, she left very upset, questioning our right to tell her what to do with her body.

Hand, neck and face tattoos on lightly or untattooed people has forever been a discussion in the tattoo industry. Many tattooers feel that tattooing these areas is ethically questionable and in fact they are commonly called “Job Stoppers.” Of course, it is not my position to tell someone what to do with their body — but that does not negate the fact that there are social ramifications to having visible tattoos that you are not able to hide. Tattooers also should have the right to have our own professional standards and turn down work that they are not comfortable with.

It is true that having a few small tattoos generally gets no response from today’s public. But get that little tattoo on your hand and shake the hand of the co-op board president who is deciding if you’re right for their building, or the hand of the Admissions Director when you’re trying to get little Goldie into Spence or Dalton, and you will quickly see what it feels like to realize that you are no longer on an equal playing field. These are the complications we are thinking about when we decline to tattoo your neck.

I have never sat for a job interview in my adult life. I live in a bubble called the East Village and will never have to attend a PTA meeting. Yet I can can tell you with 100 percent certainty that there have been several times in my life and career that I have had to climb out of a “tattoo judgement hole” to get to ground zero when dealing with people such as loan officers, landlords and potential mother-in-laws. There have unfortunately been people who do not want to look beyond my skin and who think I am not as smart or worthy because of the tattoo work that they see on me. I’ve always felt strongly that it is not necessary to conform to society’s expectations if they do not work for me, and in having my own neck and hands tattooed I can see where a feeling of hypocrisy could be felt. It obviously would be best if each person was judged on their individual merit, but we do not live in this utopia. Therefore, I set this policy in my tattoo shop.

Tattooers are artists, the medium is skin, that is already a big enough responsibility. Tattooers do not take their profession lightly and we ask that our clients do the same. Remember! It is a permanent change to your appearance that will alter both your life and experiences. As professionals, our advice has your best interest at heart. We will only be with you for a short time, but the work we create will be with you forever. Please choose wisely.

Here’s How Far In Advance You Should Send Those Wedding Invitations

The rules of wedding etiquette are constantly changing, making it difficult for modern brides, grooms and guests to find up-to-date and correct information. That’s why we launched #MannersMondays, a series in which we ask our followers on Twitter and Facebook to submit their most burning etiquette-related questions. Then, with the help of our team of etiquette experts, we get you the right answers to your biggest Big Day dilemmas. Check out this week’s question below!

Anna Post — great-great-granddaughter of etiquette guru Emily Post and author of Emily Post’s Wedding Etiquette — is here to help us answer this week’s question. Find out what she had to say below:

Wedding invitations are typically sent roughly eight weeks out from the wedding, with an RSVP deadline about two or three weeks prior to the wedding. These dates are all flexible — the mailing date might easily compress down to six weeks or expand up to ten. Under special circumstances, like a short-notice wedding, the time frame can compress as much as needed. Or for far-flung guest travel, it would likely expand outward even more. You don’t want the invitation following immediately after the save-the-date (otherwise what’s the point of the save-the-date?), so in your case, you might compress the timing a little. Here’s what you should think about as you set your timetable:

Ask your caterer when he or she will need an absolutely final guest count by. This is usually within a week or two of the wedding date. Then count back a week or so to give you time to track down any guests who haven’t replied on time. This is your RSVP deadline. From there, count backward four to six weeks. This is the date you will mail your invitations.

If you plan to send additional invitations as you receive “no” RSVPs, count back an additional two weeks to set your mailing date, so that guests whose invitations are sent later still have plenty of time to reply. Nothing says “‘B-list guest” like receiving an invitation at the last minute. Any B-list guests should never know they were B-list.

Once you know the date you will mail your invitations, plan backward a little further to the date you will need your invitation order to arrive because that’s not the same as the date they will be mailed. In between those two dates, you will need one to two weeks to address your envelopes (this is traditionally done by hand), assemble stuff, weigh (don’t skip this step at the post office!), seal and stamp your invitations. You will also want to double-check that the addresses are correct. Even with a small guest list, this takes time.

You can submit your wedding etiquette questions via Facebook or tweet them to us @HuffPostWedding with the hashtag #MannersMondays.

You’re Washing Your Swimsuit All Wrong: Here’s How to Extend The Life of It

kate-moss-arthur-elgort

You’ve found the perfect swimsuit. OK, well maybe it’s more like the perfect collection of swimsuits (hey, when they’re this cute, who can stop at one?). Now it’s time to take care of them and make sure they don’t fade, stretch out, or get grimy.

Making a suit last all summer and beyond is all in the washing, says John Mahdessian, owner of Madame Paulette, where New Yorkers send their finest clothes to be dry-cleaned (you also might recognize his name if you watch The Real Housewives of New York. He’s Dorinda Medley’s beau!) Mahdessian told us that women tend to do all the wrong things when it comes to laundering their swimsuits, ruining them by (or even before) summer’s end. Here are his tips and tricks for extending the life of your suit:

1. Before you jump in: Rinse off any body oils or body makeup, which will ruin your swimsuit over time.

2. Hand-washing is your best bet: “I prefer the hand-washing and soaking technique with a neutral detergent, like Palmolive or Ivory soap,” said Mahdessian. First, rinse the suit with water to flush out any chlorine or debris, then add soap and rub gently. Be sure to rinse out all of the soap and lay flat to dry.

3. If you can’t hand-wash: “Buy a mesh laundry bag and put the suit in there before throwing it into the machine on a gentle cycle,” said Mahdessian. “Otherwise, the mechanical action will stretch the fabric and it can get bungled, twisted, and tied up.”

4. Don’t leave it to dry in the sun: Lay your suit flat on a towel to dry so it doesn’t stretch out—and do so in the shade. If you leave your suit out to bake in the sun for more than a couple of hours, it will begin to fade. And whatever you do, don’t put it in the dryer.

5. If you’ve got a stain: If the stain is wet, lightly dab it, then start the hand-washing process when you get home. If the stain is dry, do not scratch it off. If you do, you can scratch out some of the dye, which can never be repaired. If you can’t get the stain out, head to your local dry cleaner.

6. Can’t get those little particles sand out of the fibers of your swimsuit? First, try hand-washing and soaking it for a bit in water. If that doesn’t work, wait until the swimsuit dries completely and grab your hair-dryer. Blow out the sand particles on a light and cool setting.

Here’s What Pamela Anderson Wore to Become a Countess

Care for some clarification on that statement? Pamela Anderson has just been named Countess of Giglio, an area in Montenegro, in gratitude for her conservation work. For the official ceremony, shown on her Instagram and involving an official piece of paper and some sword-tapping, Anderson wore a long wrapdress that (with a few small modifications) wouldn’t look totally out of place on Kate Middleton or Spain’s ultra-chic Queen Letizia. For shoes, she wore black platforms with a thick heel.

Santa Margherita, Italy Countessa de' Gigli

A photo posted by The Pamela Anderson Foundation (@pamelaanderson) on

Last fall, Anderson was awarded “the Dame of Grand Cross of the most prestigious knighthood title of Constantine Order of Saint George,” an honor given to her by Montenegro’s Prince Stefan (a self-declared royal of sorts, who says he’s the descendent of the former ruling family). The official ceremony to accept the official title—the Imperial Countess of Giglio—happened this weekend, and per a letter posted to her foundation’s website, she now seems permitted to sign documents as “Lady Pamela Anderson.” Her sons Brandon and Dylan were also knighted in appreciation for the work they do fighting animal abuse and climate change.

While the honorific comes from Montenegro, the ceremony took place in Italy.

Here’s How to Make Pink Makeup Cool

Pink is the prissiest color in a makeup palette—and the most subversive. Just look at the Sex Pistols’ Never Mind the Bollocks album cover, Elsa Schiaparelli’s shocking pink, or Gwen Stefani’s hair circa 1999. The color is far more audacious than we give it credit for. Think pink—as in punk.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Shorts: 5 Glamour Staffers, 1 Pair of Cutoffs, Here’s What Happened

Finding a flattering pair of denim cutoffs can be frustrating, but the hard work is always worth it in the end. Find a great pair of denim shorts and there’s a high chance you’ll want to live in them straight through Labor Day.

glamour-cutoffs-02

We asked five Glamour staffers to try on a pair of Gap’s highly-rated “1969 destructed slim denim shorts”—and, across the board, for women short and tall, curvy and boyish, the unanimous result was that they worked. Everyone found them comfortable, agreed they were flattering, and got a range of appreciative co-worker comments.

Here’s what we all discerned as key characteristics making these particular jean shorts awesome:

· They are embellishment-free. It’s tempting to want to pick a bold color or trendy accent, but skip the frou-frou to get the most timeless look.

· Skip the cuff. The added thickness of folded fabric can make thighs look larger than they really are. Plus, you can always cuff them yourselves, if you want.

· Look for a mid-thigh (or upper-mid-thigh) length. Any shorter will appear short on most women, while hemlines that approach the knee break the line of the leg in an awkward spot.

When it comes to length, some women wished for shorts a little longer—to be fair, they didn’t always pass the fingertip test. Pro tip: If you’re looking for a longer, looser fit, try the next size up—they’ll be slouchier, plus you can shimmy them down to sit lower on your hips.

Here’s What It Would Look Like If Inspirational Quotes Were Honest, Vol. 4

If a tree falls in the woods, and you’re not there to hear it, wouldn’t you want it to fall on that friend who posts WAY too many inspirational quotes on Facebook?

Ah, the inspirational quote. On social media, it’s like a language all its own. Whatever event is happening in someone’s life, their is an eye-catching image and some pretty-fonted words to express the emotion attached to that event. But sometimes these inspirational quotes reach just a bit too far, and they need to be brought back down to earth.

Here are some of those inspirational quotes you’re always sharing, and their more honest translations:

Distracted When You Meditate? Here’s Why You Should Do a Happy Dance

2015-05-27-1432752580-7982024-DWCCB66150128embarkation1000x1000.jpg
Lately, in my morning meditation sessions, I’ve been doing a mental happy dance every time I notice myself absorbed in and distracted by thought.

Huh? Isn’t the goal to focus on my breath and not let my mind run and wander?

No, in fact the goal is mindfulness, and guess what: when I notice that I’m thinking again, that is mindfulness in action.

That moment of noticing is not an opportunity to beat myself up for my monkey mind; that is the golden moment, because every time I notice myself thinking, I now have the opportunity to simply let that thought go, and return to my breath.

I wish someone had explained this to me decades ago.

Here’s the really beautiful thing, though: this skill of noticing that I’ve become absorbed in thought is not just useful on my meditation cushion. Noticing what I’m doing, and mindfully redirecting myself, is exactly the same skill I need in the rest of my day:

  • To pull myself back to the task I really want to be doing, when I succumb to distractions (Facebook, anyone?)
  • To point myself toward the carrots when I find my hand reaching for an unhealthy snack.
  • To consciously stop eating when I feel sated (even when the food is so yummy, I want to gobble down more!)

In the examples above, the critical first step is noticing. Unless and until I notice that I’ve gotten sucked down a Facebook rabbit hole, or that I’m self-medicating with food, or simply that I’m full, my impulsive lizard brain will be in the driver’s seat.

The ability to notice, and then redirect (the second step) — otherwise known as willpower or self-control — is like a muscle. One of the best ways humans have found to strengthen that muscle is mindfulness meditation. Every time I notice my mind absorbed in thought, and gently bring my attention back to my breath, I am flexing and strengthening that willpower muscle.

In fact, studies have shown that daily meditation actually grows your prefrontal cortex in as little as 8 weeks! Meditation literally makes your prefrontal cortex bigger and better connected.

And it does this while shrinking the amygdala, the “lizard brain” that’s responsible for (among other things) urging you to only follow your impulses, rather than your long-term goals.

In addition, as this article in Scientific American says, meditation changes the “functional connectivity” between these two regions. “The connection between the amygdala and the rest of the brain gets weaker, while the connections between areas associated with attention and concentration get stronger.”

Wow! That’s some endorsement for meditation!

Unfortunately, for too many years, I thought my inability to “clear my mind” meant that I sucked at meditation and it wasn’t for me. Now, thankfully, I understand that the goal isn’t an empty mind, but mindfulness.

So instead of beating myself up for my monkey mind, when I notice my mind wandering — yet again — in a meditation session, I give a silent cheer for my prefrontal cortex.

I now know that the “worse” my meditation session is, in terms of my mind getting distracted by thought, as long as I notice myself thinking, and gently guide myself back to breath, the better practice I’m getting.

No wonder I look forward to my morning meditation now, after avoiding it for years! Who wants to meditate when they know they’ll emerge psychically black and blue from beating themselves up over and over?

On the other hand, when you know you’re going to spend ten or twenty minutes happydancing, meditation starts to become irresistible.

Do you meditate? If not, I encourage you to try it, with the self-direction to mentally celebrate each time you notice yourself absorbed in thinking, and gently, lovingly let go of your thought and guide your attention back to your breath.

It’s not an easy practice, but it’s not supposed to be, and that’s the point: you’ve got to work the muscle to strengthen it.

Have fun and namaste!

Here’s Why Ed Sheeran Won’t Hook Up With Taylor Swift

Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift are BFFs and bedtime texters, and it’s going to stay that way.

During an interview with Power 105.1’s “The Breakfast Club” on Friday, a co-host asked Sheeran if he’s ever tried to hook up with the “Style” singer.

“No,” Sheeran said, after adorably explaining that he “gets on really well with her” in a professional sense. When asked whether or not Swift is Sheeran’s type, he quickly said she was “too tall.”

“I feel like we look like cast members of ‘The Hobbit.’ She’s like, in the elven kingdom,” the British singer-songwriter said. “She’s hanging out with Galadriel and stuff, and I’ve got hairy feet.” Sheeran then said he thinks it’s healthy to have good friends who you don’t hook up with.

We don’t blame him. The two singers already know each other super well, and he even went to lunch with Swift and Calvin Harris on Thursday, so why mess that up?

Millennials Are The Least Religious Generation Yet, And Here’s The Surprising Reason Why

A large body of research shows that Millennials are significantly less religious than previous generations of young Americans. But as to whether the lack of religion seen in today’s Gen Y’ers (born between 1980 and the mid-1990’s) is transient or lasting, scientists aren’t sure.

But now a new review of surveys of more than 11 million adolescents, conducted over the course of almost 50 years, suggests that the religion divide between Millennials and their predecessors is a true generational one. According to the data, Millenials are much less interested in organized religion — and also less interested in spirituality in general.

“Unlike previous studies, ours is able to show that Millennials’ lower religious involvement is due to cultural change, not to Millennials being young and unsettled,” Dr. Jean Twenge, a psychologist at San Diego State University and of the researchers, said in a written statement.

Twenge is referring to studies like a 2010 Pew survey — which suggested that people may consider religion to be more important as they get older — and a 2014 survey that suggested Millennials do have a strong sense of faith in God, despite identifying less with organized religion.

Religion’s decline. For the new study, the researchers reviewed four surveys conducted between 1966 to 2014 and involving 11.2 million American adolescents between the ages of 13 to 18. They found that Millennials were less likely to attend services, less likely to say religion was important in their lives, and less approving of religious organizations than Boomers and Gen X’ers were at the same age.

Millennials “were also less likely to describe themselves as spiritual, suggesting that religion has not been replaced by spirituality,” Twenge told The Huffington Post in an email.

The decline in religiosity was found to be greater among young women than young men. The decline was also found to be greater among Whites than Blacks, and among Northeasterners than Southerners.

A cultural shift. What explains the religious declines? Twenge believes the changes may reflect a growing emphasis on individualism in U.S. culture.

“We found that religious involvement was low when individualism was high,” she said in the email. “Individualism is a cultural system that places more emphasis on the self and less on social rules. Individualism can conflict with religion, especially as religion usually involves following certain rules and being part of a group.”

As for whether the decline is a good thing or a bad thing, she said “I’d rather leave it up to others to decide.”

Whatever the reason, there’s no doubt “this is a time of dramatic change in the religious landscape of the United States,” as the researchers wrote in a paper describing the research, which was published online on May 11 in the journal PLOS ONE.

In the film, directed by Brad Bird (“Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol”) and co-written by Damon Lindelof (“Lost”), Tomorrowland is faraway utopia created by the world’s top innovators, artists and scientists.

The Huffington Post asked Lindelof which “Lost” character he would send to Tomorrowland to better mankind’s future.

“I think that I’d probably send Hurley,” Lindelof told us. The fan favorite character would help Tomorrowland with his positive thinking, something largely essential to the movie’s plot, Lindelof explained.

“It’s always just nice to have someone around to lighten things up. He’s got a great sense of humor,” Lindelof said. Hurley “tended to always be the glass half full guy.”

We couldn’t agree more, and we bet Hurley would take full advantage of the jetpacks there.

While working on “Tomorrowland,” Lindelof also spent his time on the upcoming season of HBO’s “The Leftovers.” The series, co-created by Lindelof and inspired by Tom Perrotta’s novel of the same name, follows those who remain after the mysterious, sudden disappearance of two percent of the world’s population. It is one of the bleakest, most depressing shows on television, a stark contrast to the optimistic “Tomorrowland.”

Lindelof said the HBO show “was constantly threatening to infect” his latest Disney adventure. “The gravitational pull of that feeling, [that] darkness and depression, is so much more powerful than the optimistic and bright pull of ‘Tomorrowland,'” he said.

“When you spend time in a creative world like that, it does affect your mood. I was probably not the most pleasant person to live with,” he added.

When “The Leftovers” returns for its second season, at least we’ll have “Tomorrowland” to yank us out of our depression.

Or we can just think more like Hurley.

“Tomorrowland” is now playing in theaters.

Here’s Who Ben Mendelsohn Wants To Play In ‘Star Wars’ If Those Rumors Are True

Ben Mendelsohn is having quite the moment, and if those “Star Wars” rumors end up being true, he’s bound to become a household name in Hollywood.

The Australian actor has been well-known back home since he was a teenager, but you’ve likely seen him more and more recently in American films and TV shows. He was killed by Bane in “The Dark Knight Rises,” played Jessa’s father in HBO’s “Girls,” and appeared alongside Brad Pitt in “Killing Them Softly.”

This year alone, Mendelsohn’s credits include Netflix’s “Bloodline,” Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut “Lost River,” gambler film “Mississippi Grind ” and indie Western “Slow West.” Let’s also not forget that he might star alongside Felicity Jones in “Star Wars: Rogue One.”

In John Maclean’s feature film debut, “Slow West,” Michael Fassbender (who previously worked with Maclean on two short films), plays Silas, a mysterious traveler headed west in 16th-century Colorado. Silas helps 16-year-old Scottish boy Jay Cavendish (Kodi Smit-McPhee) on his journey to find the girl he loves until they run into Mendelsohn’s Payne, a villainous leader of a gang of bounty hunters.

The Huffington Post sat down with Mendelsohn at the Tribeca Film Festival last month to discuss the wardrobe he took home from “Slow West,” who he’d like to play in the “Star Wars” universe, and his bizarre dance in “Lost River.”

slow west mendelsohn

I loved “Slow West.” It’s so beautifully made.
Yeah, [Maclean] did really well, didn’t he? It’s beautifully shot. He’s got something, that guy. And Fassbender found him, or they found each other. So I just got asked on board when it was all in its shape and I have a little turn in it.

You don’t show up in too many scenes, but when Payne is on screen he definitely makes an impression.
This, I like this. And that coat [points to the film poster].

Payne’s coat is amazing! Did you get to keep it?
I have that coat. I have it sitting on a mannequin at home. I don’t have memorabilia, but try to take a bit of wardrobe, usually because they dress me better than I dress myself. But that coat, that’s a thing of beauty. I’m very proud of it.

Are you going to wear it around?
Yeah, I suppose I might bust it out in moments of great bravery or just deep cold. I did wear it for the premiere in Sundance.

What was it like working with Fassbender?
Michael had a lot of stuff to do. It was all drunk hoo-ha and boy, he did some incredibly dangerous things around a fire, which aren’t in the [final] cut. There was some falling, some drunken shenanigans near fires and rocks, sh*t that I was going, “Oh, f**k.” But there’s a fearlessness to the way he works that is pretty admirable. And Kodi [Smit-McPhee], there’s such a delicateness to him. When he starts acting, he feels like gossamer. It was a good couple of days.

tv show gifs

You’ve been so well-known in Australia, but now you’re finally having a breakthrough in the U.S. What’s that feel like?
It’s cool. It’s been a great several years. I came here for a very, very long time and just couldn’t get any sort of traction going. There were a couple of people who liked me, but it didn’t translate into anything that was employment based. I like to think that what really helped it was the one-two punch of “Animal Kingdom” and either “Place Beyond the Pines” or “Killing Them Softly.” Those combined really seemed to set some wind in the sails. It’s been a dreamy couple of years.

I bet. And now there’s those “Star Wars” rumors …
Yeah, there are those rumors.

So, are they just rumors?
They — I can definitively and honestly say to you that I have no job yet that I know of to go to. That may change. I would be very happy if that came to pass, but at this stage it’s just chatter.

Ideally, if you were in it, what character would you want to play?
It would depend. I think that the Empire has such room. We only know of a few people on the Empire side of the fence. “Star Wars” is populated by so many great types, who wouldn’t want to be a Han Solo kind of dude? And then you’ve got the whole Luke strain. I don’t think that they’re likely to — I’d be thrilled, actually, if they were looking at me for a Skywalkery-type of a number. But yeah, there’s a lot.

You also worked with Gosling again in “Lost River,” where you have singing and dancing scenes. Had you ever done something like that before?
No, I’ve never sung before. That’s me doing my Frankie Laine impersonation. There’s a little film I did where I sing a bit, but nothing like that. And the dance was something we just figured out very last minute just before we were going to shoot the scene. We knew we had it coming up and I went down there and we put on a A$ AP Rocky track and just danced off.

That’s even more bizarre because that’s totally different from the song playing in the scene.
That’s right, it’s not [the same]. But if you ever want to hear what it was that I was dancing to, it is “F**king Problems.”

Did you know the song before that?
Yeah, I was familiar with the opus. I’m a reasonably — I have my phases — but I really like music.

“Slow West” is now playing in select theaters.

Here’s What’s Appropriate To Bring To An Engagement Party

The rules of wedding etiquette are constantly changing, making it difficult for modern brides, grooms and guests to find up-to-date and correct information. That’s why we launched #MannersMondays, a series in which we ask our followers on Twitter and Facebook to submit their most burning etiquette-related questions. Then, with the help of our team of etiquette experts, we get you the right answers to your biggest Big Day dilemmas. Check out this week’s question below!

“Engagement party: Gift or no gift?”Lauryn Ricketts/Twitter

Anna Post — great-great-granddaughter of etiquette guru Emily Post and author of Emily Post’s Wedding Etiquette — is here to help us answer this week’s question. Find out what she had to say below:

The short answer is that while giving an engagement gift hasn’t traditionally been expected, the trend in most parts of the country has shifted toward giving gifts. Check with your host if you are really unsure.

Back when Emily Post was first writing about etiquette in the early 1920s, engagement parties were very small, and only the closest of friends and family would give a gift. Also, an engagement announcement would often have been a surprise to guests at a party made up of close friends, who therefore wouldn’t have gifts ready to give.

Engagement gifts today are typically small tokens of the marriage to come — small household items such as picture frames, wine bottle coasters, cookbooks, sets of tea towels, or gifts the couple can share such as a pair of champagne flutes, a bottle of wine or a gift certificate for a dinner out.

You can submit your wedding etiquette questions via Facebook or tweet them to us @HuffPostWedding with the hashtag #MannersMondays.

Here’s What It Would Look Like If Inspirational Quotes Were Honest, Vol. 3

You’re inspiring me to death!

There is such a thing as too many inspirational quotes. We’re talking about the scores of quote photos that your most annoying Facebook and Instagram friends incessantly post. At some point, you have to stop being inspired and go out and do that thing you’re inspired to do, right?

That being said, we’re not sure they’re all that effective anyway. If these quotes were being more honest, people would probably hesitate to share them as much. And we’re all for that.*

*Except for these. Definitely share the h-e-double-hockey-sticks out of these.

Here’s What Happens When Daughters Try On Their Mom’s Wedding Gown

As a mom, seeing your daughter wearing your wedding dress can bring on a range of emotions — tears of joy, nostalgia and quite a few laughs too.

That was certainly the case for the three mothers in a BuzzFeed video posted to YouTube on Friday. One of the dresses was dated (“I just feel like like this looks like the nightgown of a queen in the 1700s” one daughter said), one was ill-fitting (“I could just…bust the whole thing open,” another said). But the last one, a strapless ball gown, was the best fit of the bunch.

Here’s Which ‘Game Of Thrones’ Character Snoop Dogg Would Smoke Weed With

It’s no surprise that Snoop Dogg is one of the biggest “Game of Thrones” fans outside of the Seven Kingdoms. He raps on the “Lannister’s Anthem” on the “Catch the Throne, Volume II” mixtape, and he even got stoned with Seth Rogen and recapped “GoT.”

But if the Snoop D-O-double-G could blaze with anyone in Westeros, who would it be?

The Daily Beast caught up with the rapper to find out. “Of course Tyrion Lannister! He knows how to party,” Snoop said. (And we totally agree.) Tyrion is also Snoop’s favorite character in the HBO series. But why, you ask? “Cuz he likes to have a good time and party with bad b**ches,” Snoop told the Daily Beast. Yup.

Although Snoop loves “Game of Thrones” with all of his heart, we’re not sure he knows the show is just a show. While talking about his upcoming album “Bush” with the New York Post, Snoop explained why he’s so into “GoT.”

I watch it for historic reasons to try to understand what this world was based on before I got here,” Snoop said. “I like to know how we got from there, to here, and the similarities between then and now.” Yes, that is an actual thing Snoop Dogg actually said about a TV show with dragons and frozen zombies.

But then again, author George R.R. Martin has said his books are heavily influenced by history, and the Red Wedding and even The Mountain vs. The Viper fight were historically based. So Snoop isn’t that far off.

“Game of Thrones” airs on Sundays at 9:00 p.m. ET on HBO.

Here’s What Really Happens on the Met Gala Red Carpet…

Monday night’s Met Gala has given us months, and possibly years, of good fashion fodder. But beyond the gorgeous dresses, don’t you wonder what that majestic red carpet is really like? Well, we found out just for you. Read on for the inside scoops and surprises of fashion’s biggest night.

larry-davidLarry David (Larry David!?) was an early arrival. While most men and women in glittering gowns took their sweet time to sashay up the vertiginous steps, David galloped up them in the blink of an eye. No interviews or posing for him. If we knew any better, we would have clocked his time. We’re on it for next year.

hannah-davis-derek-jeterHannah Davis, here with boyfriend Derek Jeter, looked like she was poured into her crimson J. Mendel, but actually, the dress fit Davis like a glove. No tailoring required. “I went up to Vogue and it just fit perfectly,” the dishy model told us.

He jokes, “I waxed all the hair off my body, then the microdermabrasion, then a large bath, full of whole milk and some vanilla,” he told us. Oh, he also joked that he delivered nine kittens in the car on the way to the museum. “I cut the umbilical cords; it was amazing. Smelled terrible but amazing.”

Here’s What a Lesbian Shouldn’t Bring on a First Date. A U-Haul.

The funniest jokes are the ones that are true, which is what makes the most famous lesbian joke of all so funny. Too funny for our own good, if you ask me.

“What does a lesbian bring on a second date?”

All together now: “A U-Haul.”

It’s scary but true. We are known for our insta-nesting. There’s no way around that. And why we do it is painfully simple. It’s in our nature to nurture.

So, we meet a girl we dig and the first thing we want to do is snuggle in and take care of her. It’s pair-bonding at it’s best — and it’s worst.

The thing is, although it might primarily come from a good place, it also comes from a place of fear, which is never a good place from which to operate.

When you think about marking territory, men and dogs might be the first groups that come to mind. But the truth is, lesbians don’t fall too far behind when it comes to the, “MineMineMine” behavior and mentality.

Why? Well, I’ve got a couple of ideas.

One, it’s not easy to meet the right girl. So, when you do, you want to hang on to her. I get that.

Two, we like to lock things down; it’s easier on our over-thinking, over-processing brains. If we can get a confirmation on this coupling thing down quickly, we can move on to other things like volunteering at that food bank and starting that kale garden.

Three, and don’t get all bent out of shape about this, but we are girls. And even the toughest amongst us fear a broken heart. So, having a girl park her VW in your garage and her golden retriever and jet-black feline in your house is, let’s face it, a welcome safety.

But, my friends, we have to break the cycle. This U-Hauling business may work for some, but it is not a good idea in the long run for most of us.

I repeat — not a good idea.

I know, I know. You have this friend… Or one time you… We all have those stories.
But I’m not talking about the exceptions. I am speaking of the rule. Make no mistake, insta-nesting is a dangerous game.

Why?

For starters, you miss out of a lot of the fun stuff. Sure, safe and easy might feel nice. But new and exciting feels amazing. If you’re meant to be, you’ll be. Trust me.

The rush has more of a chance of ruining you than solidifying you. So enjoy the slow burn instead. Go out on dates. Stay at your own place by yourself once in awhile. Don’t lose track of your friends. Leave the wedding planning for later.

When you take the time to really learn someone, you can enjoy the experience of being new and special to someone. And there’s no feeling in the world that compares to that.

Waiting for that person to call or text. Looking forward to a big date at the end of the week. Planning outings for the next time you’ll see each other — Those are the joys of dating. Why rush through them?

You have a lifetime to figure out who’s going to make dinner and who’s going to take the dog out.

I have a confession to make. I was a U-Hauler — if not literally, then certainly figuratively.

I would meet a girl; feel a connection, and get right to the relationship part, promises and all. And — you guessed it — it never worked out. I have asked myself a thousand times why exactly I do this. I have no good answer other than, sigh, genetics, old habits and, I don’t know, my star sign?

But this time around, I’m dating a new kind of girl. A non-U-Hauler, if you will. She’s younger than I; maybe the next generation is learning from our mistakes?

She is committed to her job and her friends and her life. And she wants someone to share her life.

But she doesn’t need someone.

That is something I have long preached. But I am doing a far better job of practicing this time around…

Here’s How to Wear Your Favorite Summer Prints to Work

Florals, gingham and polka dots aren’t exactly what you think of when it comes to getting dressed for work in the spring and summertime. But we say there’s no reason to reserve these fantastic prints for the weekend.

Dressing in prints is all about balance and working within a color family to make the look cohesive. Take a cue from the work-perfect looks here:

office-prints-girl-with-curves
Polka Dots
When wearing polka dots, especially to the office, it’s best to keep the print on the small scale—less Minnie Mouse, more Marilyn Monroe. We love this tan microdot skirt and simple black cap-sleeve top and skinny belt. Throw on a pair of city sandals and you’re good to go.

office-prints-what-the-chung
Abstract Prints
Working in the same blue color family, she’s able to combine stripes and an abstract-print pencil skirt. The navy blazer pulls it all together seamlessly.

Stripes
Stripes are the most basic print to work into any part of your work wardrobe. This understated striped top with a feminine midi skirt and city sandals make for the ideal work-to-outdoor-drinks look.

office-prints-style-heroine
Gingham
Gingham is one of the more challenging prints to pull off at the office. It becomes office-appropriate when done in a shirtdress. You can also opt for a gingham button-down shirt to pair with a midi skirt. A brown or black belt and simple pumps are a must with gingham to give your summer work look the extra-tailored appeal.

Here’s Why I Am My Mother’s Daughter

I was nothing like my mother. She was shy and elegant. She covered her mouth when she laughed.

She didn’t understand how someone like her could have given birth to someone like me. She didn’t understand where my confidence came from, or how, at five years old, I could have an opinion about the kind of car I’d prefer to be driven in to nursery school. A coupe.

She said she was never scared for me because I was tough.

That I’d get what I wanted out of life because I wouldn’t settle for anything less. That no one would ever take advantage of me — and good luck to the person who tried.

My mother told me to understand that not everyone would like me, but I would be deeply loved by those who did. She told me to always be compassionate; that was my weakness. To be compassionate with people who were weaker, or meeker, or just scared of life. To have compassion for people who weren’t as brave.

She told me to be gentler with my older sister, because she wasn’t built like me; she was more sensitive. That, even though I was the youngest, my sense of self was the strongest. When I’d complain that it was my sister’s fault for not standing her ground, she would reply, “Wouldn’t you get out of the way if you saw you coming?”

My mother knew who I was before I did.

She said I was my father’s daughter.

A few days before she died, my mom grabbed my hand and said, “Please take care of your brothers and sisters, because I know you’ll be able to one day. Keep our family together.” And then added, “your father’s a huge pain in the ass, by the way… You’ll see.”

She died when she was 66, with five of her children holding her hand. Only one of us was missing that day in the room we all sat in, though I knew deep in my heart that he too was there to take her hand the moment it slid out of ours.

He was her oldest, her firstborn. She had had to live through that loss and continue loving us.

I don’t know enough to understand what that must be like for a parent. Or what it means to be a parent, for that matter. But, I do know what it’s like to be loved, because my mother showed me what that meant, even when she should have been out of love herself.

She said that being a mother was like getting your heart broken a million times a day…

Mom,

I’m 40 now, an age I never thought I’d be.

I hope you’re smiling at me with that flirty little “I’ve eaten something I shouldn’t have eaten” smile. My version of that little smile usually implies something much more naughty than a Snicker’s bar, but you already know that.

There have been days that I’ve picked up the phone to call you, and then remembered. But it doesn’t matter, because I know you’re here. I still feel you.

I did everything you asked me to do. I haven’t exactly nailed the “compassion” part, but I think about it every day, and then, I try again.

You were right. About everything. You knew me before I knew me.

You were right about Dad.

I’m smiling back at you. For the love, the adoration and the belief.

I believe in you, too.

My heart is full.

I know now that I am my mother’s daughter.

To every mother on Mother’s Day.

Thank you for teaching us how to love.

Here’s The Reason Charlie Sheen Wasn’t In The ‘Two And A Half Men’ Finale

The return of Charlie Sheen to “Two and a Half Men” has been speculated about for months. And the show’s series finale, “Of Course He’s Dead,” included tons of Sheen references. Everything seemed like it was building up to a comeback. Then, it didn’t happen.

Sheen did, in fact, tease an “anticipated” cameo on Twitter, but it turns out that was for his upcoming appearance on “The Goldbergs.”

So what happened? Following the end of the series finale and its absence of a certain rock star from Mars, a vanity card from executive producer Chuck Lorre ran on-air explaining the situation:

I know a lot of you might be disappointed that you didn’ t get to see Charlie Sheen in tonight’ s finale. For the record, he was offered a role. Our idea was to have him walk up to the front door in the last scene, ring the doorbell, then turn, look directly into the camera and go off on a maniacal rant about the dangers of drug abuse. He would then explain that these dangers only applied to average people. That he was far from average. He was a ninja warrior from Mars. He was invincible.

And then we would drop a piano on him.

We thought it was funny.

He didn’t.

Instead, he wanted us to write a heart warming scene that would set up his return to primetime TV in a new sitcom called The Harpers starring him and Jon Cryer.

We thought that was funny too.

Despite the lack of warlocks, the finale pretty much had everyone else you can think of: John Stamos, Arnold Schwarzenegger and even Angus T. Jones. And though there was no Sheen, that didn’t stop his former character, Charlie Harper, from coming back in animated form:

Lorre and Sheen, of course, had a historic fallout that gave us memorable phrases like “winning” and “tiger blood” and even led to Sheen’s character being killed off from the show (or so we thought). But as the vanity card shows, it appears the two sides just couldn’t agree on how a comeback would be handled.

As a final ode to the show and the Sheen saga, the last moments of the series showed a Sheen body double getting a piano dropped on top of him, supposedly killing the character for good. Soon after, Lorre appeared and said, “Winning,” right before a piano dropped on him, too.

Here’s How To Get Every Last Bit Of Peanut Butter Out Of The Jar (This Is Genius)

The worst, worst, worst, worst, worst thing about peanut butter is the construction of its jar. Nothing else is bad about peanut butter; it’s one of the world’s most divine edibles. It satisfies a salty craving, it makes for exquisite sandwiches and it can help keep you full for long periods of time.

But, when you reach the last licks of a jar (which is devastating on its own), the remnants of the nutty spread are near impossible to wrangle. No utensil is agile enough to scrape the remaining bits, and not even a toddler’s hand is slim enough to fit all the way through the jar. In most cases, this quandary results in tossing out the jar while there’s still some perfectly good peanut butter inside. It doesn’t feel right, but it seems there are no other options.

empty peanut butter
Worst. Thing. Ever.
Flickr/paperlibrarian

But there are alternatives to discarding the jar while there’s still a bit of nutty goodness leftover. In fact, there are two tricks. We’ve already discussed overnight oats, which soak up the peanut butter into a mixture of oats, milk and other delectable toppings to craft a perfect breakfast. But overnight oats require patience and a bit of elbow grease. For instant gratification, saw the jar in half. Really!

crack open pb
Facebook/Chandler Bolt

Hallelujah, right? It’s so simple, so obvious in hindsight. Just locate an X ACTO knife or a regular kitchen knife and carefully slice the jar in half on a cutting board. Be careful not to scrape your hands on the rough plastic edges. Of course, this trick won’t work with glass jars (sad). You could smash it against a wall, but then you’d be eating more glass shards than peanut butter, and from a medical perspective that just isn’t safe.

He Asked 1500+ Elders For Advice On Living And Loving. Here’s What They Told Him.

Karl Pillemer has spent the last several years systematically interviewing hundreds of older Americans to collect their lessons for living.

Pillemer admits he’s an advice junkie. He’s also a Ph.D. gerontologist at Cornell University.

Some years ago, after turning 50, he wondered whether there is something about getting older that teaches you how to live better. “Could we look at the oldest Americans as experts on how to live our lives?” he asked. “And could we tap that wisdom to help us make the most of our lifetimes?”

His first book, “30 Lessons for Living,” synthesized advice from over 1,000 elders on topics like happiness, work, and health.

Now Pillemer has followed up with “30 Lessons for Loving,” which features practical wisdom from over 700 older Americans with 25,000 collective years of marriage experience. One couple he profiles was married for 76 years. Another interviewee describes divorcing her husband, then remarrying him 64 years later.

I spoke with Pillemer for Sophia, a HuffPost project to collect life lessons from accomplished people that was partly inspired by his work.

Pillemer shared seven key pieces of advice he’s heard repeatedly from older Americans — about their greatest regrets, finding fulfillment, and keeping relationships healthy through life’s ups-and-downs.

1. Stop worrying so much.

I asked these oldest Americans what they think people tend to regret at their age, and what they would advise younger people to do to avoid regrets.

I expected big-ticket items — an affair or a shady business deal, something along those lines. I really didn’t expect to hear the one answer that was among the most frequent and certainly among the most passionate and vehement: stop worrying so much.

One of the biggest regrets of the very old was, I wish I hadn’t spent so much time worrying. They weren’t talking about planning, but the kind of mindless rumination that all of us do over things we have no control.

One of the people who said that summed it up this way. It was a woman who said, “I knew there were going to be layoffs at my job. I did nothing over the coming three months except worry about being laid off. I poisoned my life. I didn’t think about anything else, even though I had no control over it.” And she paused and said, “I wish I had those three months back, because that was just lifetime lost.”

sophia project

I’m sort of a chronic Woody Allen-esque worrier. Hearing hundreds and hundreds of older people saying that when you get to our age, you’ll see time spent needlessly worrying as time wasted, it really had a profound effect on me.

People have asked me, “What do you do with that insight? How do we stop worrying?” For me, when I start to get into the mindless rumination, I will remind myself that it’s an almost absolute certainty that everybody, when they get to the end of life, will say to themselves, “I wish I hadn’t spent so much time worrying about something that wasn’t going to happen.” After doing this for so long, I kind of have this feeling of a thousand grandparents in a room yelling at me [laughs].

A related insight of older people comes through very strongly in their advice about marriage. Very often a lot of their advice revolves around lightening up. We allow things, like marriage or other domains of life, to become extremely grim.

Their viewpoint from later on — this may sound like a cliché, but they mean it — is most of the things they worried about didn’t happen, and the bad things that happened to them were things they hadn’t considered.

sophia project

2. In relationships, sweat the small stuff.

If I learned one thing about how to keep the spark alive over many decades, there’s a point that the elders make that aligns very closely with research. It is an emphasis on thinking small — the small, minute-to-minute, day-to-day interactions that make up a relationship.

We tend to think of relationships globally. But all relationships are made up of hundreds or thousands of daily micro-interactions where you have the opportunity to be positive and supportive to your partner, or to be dismissive and uninterested.

There’s been research showing, for example, that how you respond if your partner interrupts you while you’re doing something is very diagnostic of how good the relationship’s going to be. If you’re actively involved in reading the paper or doing something, and your partner wants to show you something of interest to him or her, whether you respond dismissively or you briefly stop what you’re doing and engage with your partner is very diagnostic of positivity in the relationship.

sophia project

Other research has shown that it takes around 10 positive interactions to make up for one nasty one, so the ratio of positive to negative small interactions in a relationship is really critical. And that’s exactly what older people say. Many of their lessons embody this same concept.

For example, one of the things that older people argue is that we ought to be polite in our relationships. You know, the old things that people learned in elementary school, to say please and thank you and observe normal civility, is something people forget to do all the time in their relationships, mostly because we feel comfortable.

They argue using politeness and tact, but also making a habit of positive things, of compliments, of small surprises, of doing a partner’s chore, if you have a fairly rigid division of labor. Many people described that. I had more than one woman — perhaps it’s quote from someone else — but they jokingly said that their husband doing the dishes was the best aphrodisiac they could think of. So I would say that for a good relationship that lasts a long time, one of the absolute keys is attending to being positive, cheerful, supportive in the small aspects of the relationship.

sophia project

Another thing which is closely related: many couples begin to develop divergent interests and one partner then becomes hostile to a passionate interest. I had many older people say, “Our relationship changed when I gave my partner’s interests a chance and embraced them.”

One guy in his mid-80s, he was astonished. He said, “I started going to opera and ballet. Me! Opera and ballet! But it was worth it to engage with my partner.” Or wives who took up golf or developed an interest in football. At some point, people begin to say that positivity in the relationship is more important than fighting over these kinds of like minor differences.

People who have very positive relationships consciously tend to maximize these small positive interactions. And that is a place where elder wisdom completely or very closely aligns with what we know from research about good marriages.

3. Don’t sacrifice your relationship for your children.

There’s a very strong research finding in family social science. It is called the U-shaped curve of marital happiness. Basically, marriages start out pretty happy. Marital happiness drops precipitously at the birth of the first child and usually never completely recovers until the last child has left the house.

So even though kids are great — they satisfy our existential longings, and we love them, and it’s one of the most profound experiences — they are stressful for marriages. You probably don’t need a social scientist to tell you that, because anybody who’s been through it knows that.

There’s no question that a lot of marital arguments and difficulties revolve around children. It’s one of the paradoxes of marriage that good things, like having kids or having a really good job, even owning and taking care of a house, also can be sources of marital stress. It’s the double-edged sword of marriage.

The elders had one really strong recommendation in terms of adjusting to kids. Put your marriage first, put your relationship first, and don’t let kids distract you from having a good relationship with your partner.

Couples lose themselves in the mix of kids and work and fundamentally abandon attention to their relationship. The advice of the oldest Americans is very similar to that famous instruction on airplanes — put your own oxygen mask on first and then put it on the kids. If you aren’t attending to your relationship, you aren’t going to be very effective as child-rearers.

It’s very unusual that people have an awful relationship and wind up being good parents. If you sacrifice your relationship for your children, you have a reasonable chance of losing both.

sophia project

Now, they aren’t saying, of course, that you don’t love your kids and that you wouldn’t hurl yourself in front of a train to save them. But they argue that a marital relationship needs constant attention in spite of the kids.

I was shocked, in focus groups I did in preparation for the book, how many young parents couldn’t even remember when they’d gone out on their own or spent much individual time together. The oldest Americans’ argument is: Carve it out. Impose on grandparents. Develop a babysitting exchange. Even if you don’t have any money.

I had people who grew up in the Depression. One couple said, “We returned our disposable soda bottles and went to McDonald’s. It was just an opportunity to be away.”

Even if it’s something as artificial as a weekly date night where you scrimp and arrange for babysitting and go off on your own, you simply must do it. If you lose yourself in this middle-aged blur of work and kids, you really won’t do your kids any good.

sophia project

4. People who share core values typically have better marriages.

One hallmark of these long and harmonious marriages — and this is a piece of advice, too, that older people explicitly give — is to marry someone a lot like you.

We have in our popular culture this vast amount of examples of where opposites attract and make for great relationships, from “Romeo and Juliet” through “The Little Mermaid” through “Pretty Woman” and on and on.

Both the elders and research say, not so much. Marrying somebody who is very similar to you — in the trade, we call it homophily. Homophilous marriages, where the partners are pretty similar across a range of domains, tend to last longer and be happier.

What seems to really make the difference are core shared values. For example, work and the importance of work, the number of children and the way children are to be raised and goals for children, how important money is, spiritual and religious values to some extent. If there’s core value similarity, that seems to really make for these longer and happier marriages.

There’s no magic bullet. But marrying someone who’s fundamentally similar to you, especially in outlook, worldview, and values, really does seem to make a difference. It makes everything else much easier.

You might ask, in our complex multicultural society, is that really a good thing to recommend? What they would say is, you can have differences. Sometimes differences do spice up a relationship. But if you have two people who are, for example, strongly committed to two different religious traditions, you’ve got to be aware that you’re going to have to work around that in your relationship. If you have other kinds of strong value differences, it’s important to be aware of those and deal with them.

sophia project

5. Communicate early, communicate often.

I’ve spent a lot of time interviewing young people. Of course, I’m speaking anecdotally. I know a lot of them as a college professor. One thing I’ve learned is that even in long dating relationships, it’s actually relatively unusual that they have a deep discussion about child-rearing values or even having children.

I think that’s a problem. I think the elders would say it’s a problem. Understanding how your values align is very important early on.

This is related, and it may seem obvious, but virtually all of the elders in long marriages say the key to their success was learning how to communicate effectively on important issues.

People who were divorced very typically attribute it to a communication breakdown. I had several couples in the study who had gotten divorced and then remarried. One couple was actually remarried almost a half century after they were first divorced and began to have a very positive relationship. Almost always that was attributed to learning how to open up, to have open and successful communication and to really talk to one another.

6. Approach marriage as a discipline.

The unspoken, unquestioned, and underlying assumption, especially of people 75 and older, was that marriage would last forever.

They viewed marriage as an unbreakable bond; they simply had to work within those parameters. That means, for example, you live through rough patches and don’t just try to get out of the relationship. You come to accommodations and acceptances of the other person. You see this unit as something that is bigger than two people and their immediate individual satisfaction.

When they got married, they were making a commitment to the concept of marriage as a worthwhile institution, rather than the partnership based on immediate satisfaction of the individuals involved.

I got from them the idea of marriage as a discipline — not a punishment kind of discipline but the way it’s used if you’re learning music or a martial art. Marriage is a lifelong path, one that you never perfect and that you continually work to get better at. You’re continually working to improve communication and overcome problems and establish more interest.

This worldview — that once you were in marriage, you were in it for good — shaped people’s day-to-day experience and view of it. It’s one of the things which those who do articulate it recommend to younger people. They say, even if the reality is that you may not stay married, you ought to have this attitude, because it will make you work harder to get through difficult times. And there are such benefits to doing that that you ought to do it.

sophia project

7. Take time to craft the story of your life.

There’s been considerable research on the importance of reminiscence, life review. Most old people would like to be able to see their lives as a meaningful whole, to be able to sum it up into a coherent narrative.

I don’t want to wax too poetic, but I have really been struck by something which the famous psychologist Erik Erikson said. At some point you realize that you’re given this one chance — he words it this way — ‘this one chance in all of eternity to enact an identity and to play it out in the real world.’

Towards the end of life, what’s really important to people is to be able to see how their life mattered, how it was meaningful, how there was a story to it that wraps up in a good way.

People who are able to create that kind of narrative, and think of their life in that way, are typically happier. They’re more generative. They’re much more serene and open to the end of life. So that is really good work for people to do. Writing about it is something that a number of my interviewees did. Often my best interviewees were people who had done some writing of memoirs.

There is a concept which some of them also did, it’s called the “ethical will,” where people will write down what they would like to leave to younger generations about their values and principles and morality, how someone should live a life.

sophia project

It’s so critical for older people to record their memories. I would go one step further. Stop me if — actually, I’m going to go ahead and say it. We’re in the midst right now in our society of a very dangerous experiment. That’s one where young people, outside of intermittent contacts in their own family, have no meaningful contact with older people in any other dimension of their lives.

Whereas old people were often much more integrated and were sought out as sources of wisdom and advice and life experience, now they really aren’t, because our society is so age-segregated.

I think that we place young people in peril without these kind of intergenerational contacts. This is something that’s so natural for the human race. It’s really only been about the last hundred years that people have gone to anyone other than the oldest person they knew for advice about something, say like marriage or child-rearing.

Even though it sounds artificial, it’s important for older people to record their own thoughts and memories, but it’s really critical for younger people to ask them for them, and not just for stories, but for guidance and practical advice for living. I’m not against professional help. I think it’s great. But sometimes people might go and ask the elders in their lives for advice on finding a meaningful career or improving a relationship first.

So I think that it’s both older people doing it themselves, nurturing these memories and reflecting on their lives, but it’s also our role as younger people to help them to do it, to express interest in it and be a part of their reminiscing and summing up their life into a meaningful story. That’s what we really risk losing now. It’s a large reason for these projects, I have to say, and why I’m writing these books.

Just Got Gifted a Ton of Gift Cards? Here’s How Smart Shoppers Use Them

Is your wallet feeling a little fatter with some just-received gift cards by chance? Mine, too. It’s a sweet present since the giver’s making sure you get something you actually want, but there can be a little bit of stress with figuring out, “well, what the heck do I want?”

j-crew-red-flannel-shirt

By far, the biggest mistake I see friends making when shopping with a gift card is that they’re looking for an item that’s just at that amount (or a little under). It’s limiting and much more likely to result in you picking a gift that you’re okay with, but don’t love. Your budget’s your budget, but don’t blind yourself to just seeing the amount stored on your gift certificate. Think about how much extra you could afford to spend and then allow yourself to check out items up to that price range. Just think about it: friends I’ve shop-counseled have realized they’re much happier knocking a chunk off that pair of shoes they’ve been eyeing than buying a random pair that they’re okay with, but wouldn’t have bought otherwise.

The other biggest tip is to avoid thinking of the gift card like free money, but your money. Shop the same way you would if you were using your own cash: check out the sale section, look for extra discount codes, or heck, even book an appointment with a free personal shopper and be up front, telling them how much you have on a gift card and that you’re looking for a wise way to spend it. I rounded up some of the very best end-of-year sales before the holiday and most are still going on. Rather than tucking your gift card way for a rainy day, see if there’s a majorly reduced item you could scoop up now.

Did you get any good gift cards as presents? What’s your favorite brand to receive a certificate from?

Here’s What The Most Controversial ‘Game Of Thrones’ Season 5 Scene Could Be About

“Game of Thrones” star Sophie Turner has said before that there will be “big changes” for her character, Sansa, in Season 5, and now she has discussed one scene that has been the center of months of speculation. In a red carpet interview at the British Independent Film Awards, Turner told a reporter about her favorite scene from the upcoming Season 5, which turned out to be a very intense one. “There was one scene that I did do which was super, super traumatic, and I love doing those scenes,” Turner said. “It was just really kind of horrible for everyone to be on set and watch.”

Besides hinting at the “darker direction” the new season will take, Turner wouldn’t reveal anything more about the scene. But it may be a contentious Sansa chapter in George R.R. Martin’s upcoming The Winds of Winter book, which Vulture hinted at last year.

Fans of the books have devoted numerous threads to discussing the chapter, and now with Turner’s interview, they are theorizing even more on Reddit. Here’s what fans are speculating:

WARNING: Serious book spoilers lie ahead.

Will Littlefinger rape Sansa?

This is one of the main theories fans have been speculating about since the reveal of the controversial chapter. When we last left off with Littlefinger in “Game of Thrones” Season 4, he had given Sansa a creepy kiss and then killed Lysa. He’s overly protective of and obsessive with Sansa, so a forced sexual encounter could make sense for his character. This is also highly likely since Turner previously said that one of her favorite scenes from “GoT” was when Sansa “nearly got raped” in Season 2.

Will Sansa kill Littlefinger?

This theory could go multiple ways. One is that Sansa could kill Littlefinger if the previous theory is true, and he attempts to rape her. Another is that Sansa could use powers of seduction to kill him, as Redditor Eitjr suggests. A third reason for Sansa to kill Littlefinger is, of course, if she discovers how he betrayed her father.

Will Sansa kill Robin Arryn?

tv show gifs
Image via Tumblr

This is another very popular fan theory and also supports Turner’s description of a “super traumatic” scene. Near the end of A Feast For Crows, Robin Arryn becomes very close to Sansa (she turns into a motherly figure after his mother’s death). Littlefinger also arranges a marriage between Sansa (who is living under an alias in the books) and Harry the Heir. The theory proposes that once Sansa marries Harry, she will have reason to get rid of Robin so that her new husband can rule the Vale with her by his side. Redditor ManiyaNights also suggested ways that Sansa could kill Robin secretly, so as to possibly make Littlefinger look guilty, and thus rid of him too. We’ve already seen Sansa release some frustration toward Sweetrobin last season with that epic slap, and the killing of a child would definitely be hard to watch, even by “GoT” standards.

Will Sansa take on Lady Stoneheart’s vengeance streak?

Redditor HGSIOUHGIR put forth a very crazy theory that suggests the show’s writers will give Lady Stoneheart’s role to Sansa. Book readers, and those who follow Reddit and forums closely, will know that Lady Stoneheart is Catelyn Stark resurrected from the dead. At the end of A Storm of Swords, Lady Stoneheart goes on a killing spree against anyone and everyone who betrayed her and Robb. This would mean that if the show decided to not bring back Michelle Fairley’s Catelyn, perhaps they would have Sansa enact Lady Stoneheart’s vengeance instead, hence possibly the trauma Turner mentioned. While this sounds awesome, it also seems like a rather unlikely choice by the writers.

“Game of Thrones” will return in 2015.

My Wife Told Me She Wants to Cheat, Here’s How I Feel

When Elloa Atkinson confessed to the Internet that she wanted to cheat on her husband, the Internet went crazy. Here is her husband Nige’s side of the story.

Elloa and Nige:

We had reservations about republishing this, originally shared on The Good Men Project, here. Therefore we’d like to say at the outset that there is no prescription here, no recommendation or suggestion about how other people “should” conduct themselves. We do our best to live by the principle of emotional responsibility which states that I am 100 percent responsible for my experience, as you are for yours. The concept of honesty is one part of this, and while it feels risky, it is, as our teachers Duane and Catherine O’Kane write, “far less risky than acting out.” We share this story for the people who want to believe that vulnerability, as scary as it feels, is ultimately worth the risk.

Elloa:

I wrote a post about wanting to cheat on my husband, and it went viral. The response was mixed, the opinions passionate. The only voice that was noticeably absent was that of my husband, Nige.

This didn’t seem right, but it did feel significant, symbolic of the collective vow of silence that today’s men are living under.

While some people expressed their outrage that I would hurt my husband in this way, others shared either publicly or privately that they too have had these kind of thoughts, fantasies and yes, even obsessions. Still others protested that if a man were to speak about being attracted to women whilst in a relationship, he would be lambasted.

This conversation, sparked by my article, appears to be one we are ready to have. The next step was clear. It was time for Nige to speak.

***

Nige:

A few weeks ago, when Elloa disclosed her secret attraction, I felt like my stomach had been clamped in a vice. Then, as her confession came, an inward surge of Hulk-like anger, all too familiar. My thoughts were no different than some of the judgmental comments that appeared in reaction to her article on The Huffington Post. Let’s face it: the ego always speaks first, and often cruelly.

The difference was, I know enough about this part of my mind not to voice my thoughts at this point. The first thing I have to do in these moments is take a breath, then another one, then another one. If I react now, it’s game on for the ego, but game over for the relationship — and I won’t let the ego win, because it viciously guards a set of mistaken beliefs that drive me further and further away from the one thing I truly want the most: love.

Therefore, Elloa and I have a contract about disclosing our secrets and dark thoughts to each other. We both understand that secrets kill relationships, and see so many couples playing a long-term game of hide and seek with each other. In our marriage, we are determined to fully know and be known by the other, and that means having the kind of raw, honest conversation that Elloa’s article described. The purpose of this is to go beyond the secret thought to the fear of who we are underneath, the fear that is driving that secret thought, desire or behavior.

Having this depth of honesty in our communication is not easy. It is scary, vulnerable and unpredictable.

Fortunately, we have enough tools in our relationship kitbag to be able to work through any form of upset in a safe and contained way, without using the other person as a dumping ground. The critical element in the whole process is the intention that we both set at the beginning.

We did what we always do in this situation, utilizing a therapeutic process (adapted from Clearmind International) that forms a core part of our relationship. The process gives permission to the reactive, raging part of my mind to unleash its fury for three solid minutes without any kind of reaction whatsoever from Ell. Crucial to the process is that she remains neutral, and that no physical boundaries are crossed whatsoever.

When the other person refuses to fight back but also stays the course and remains in a place of neutrality (not always easy to do), something amazing happens: the brutal, vicious attacking part of our mind gives way and we literally “drop” into our feelings. This is the place no man wants to go — a pit of despair, self-loathing, shame and loneliness.

My anger, directed initially towards Elloa for her “disgusting” behavior, was really masking a deep wound that I have carried since I was a boy — the belief that I in fact am completely inadequate and unloveable.

***

2014-10-30-ScreenShot20141030at7.45.04PM.png

The root of this belief lies in my childhood, during which I lost a testicle after being kicked by another boy and the subsequent taunting, which dogged me for most of my schooldays. I grew up believing I was a freak. I called myself the odd man out.

Fast forward 39 years and there I am with my wife, feeling 6 years old again: raw, exposed and vulnerable, with my head in my hands. I am terrified to look up, afraid she will reject me. In that moment, I feel deeply ashamed of who I am.

I know there is only one way through this shame — I have to make contact. I have to let her see me, otherwise I’ll just be an empty shell. If I don’t let her into my world, then I’m doomed to walk this planet as a zombie, a man with a plastic smile that doesn’t quite reach his eyes. And yet there is so much I want to say. Somehow, I have to take a risk and open up.

As a man, I haven’t been taught by our society how to express my feelings. It’s as taboo as wanting to cheat, forbidden in daily life and permissible only in the direst of circumstances. Even then, only a few tears are allowed before the words “man up” come into play.

Even now, after nearly three decades of inner work, speaking about how I feel often feels clumsy and awkward for me. However, experience has taught me not to listen to the shaming voice that tells me that I’m weak if I cry.

So on the day Ell told me about her crush, I let her hold me while my body shook and the tears poured out of me. I told her everything I fear I am and she just listened, just held me and let me let it all out.

Eventually, I came to a quieter place. The dam, once burst, doesn’t gush water uncontrollably forever. The wave subsides. I am left with my beliefs.

***

After the outrage and attack, after the shame and the guilt, after the tears, there is a moment of true choice. This is the state from which I can change my mind, because here, I am open. Here, I am willing to accept help. I ask my wife, this woman who just a few minutes ago I thought was the cause of all my pain, to help me remember who I am.

And the truth comes back to me. I am not the odd man out. I never was. I am strong. I am worth loving. I am good. And nothing can be taken from me because I have everything I need within.

This is not a theoretical or intellectual knowing, it is an experience I inhabit when I work through, rather than dance around or avoid, my deepest fears. The function of my relationship isn’t to avoid experiencing pain or the realization of my fears — it is to give each other a soft place to land when one of us needs to show up, knowing that the healing is always twofold.

Elloa revealing her attraction therefore became a catalyst for me to expose a war wound that I carry on a daily basis and to do the work of changing my perception of myself. I do not do this work alone. I do it from a mindset of making conscious contact with my wife and with myself.

I’m a normal guy; I have thoughts of sexual attraction towards other women almost every day. Some are fleeting while others linger. It’s the ones that linger that trouble me the most. But I know that with each attraction there is an opportunity — often not as dramatic as this one — to take a step closer to my wife, to myself and to being the type of man I want the world to know exists.

And that is why, in our household, my wife Elloa is always welcome to tell the truth, and why I tell mine in return.

Find out more from Nige Atkinson about breaking the vow of male silence.

Here’s Why Being A Disney Princess Would Be Super Awkward

There’s a reason people groom themselves with combs instead of random thingamabobs.

Being a Disney princess is great in the movies, but acting like one in real life … not so much. Does anyone really want to lose shoes all the time, freeze their drinks solid and live with seven dudes whose first names are mostly adjectives describing their personalities?

Because seriously, that doesn’t really sound like happily ever after for anybody.

Here’s Why We’re Actually Still Watching Crime Shows

Since I write television, allow me to begin by stating the obvious: America has become more polarized than at any time since the 1960s. People on opposite sides of the partisan divide have not only ceased listening to each other, they are also looking to buy homes and rent apartments in politically homogenous neighborhoods (and cities!); so that the newspaper resting at the bottom of their cages won’t ruffle their ideological feathers; so they can tell birds singing different songs to flock off.

In another chapter from the hard to believe, crossing party lines has become a criminal offense, so that it’s impossible to get anything done without offering insult to one side or the other. And every action by moderately opposing forces is greeted with hysteria. Democrats adopt a Republican health care proposal from the 1990s, which was actually implemented by a Republican governor (and eventual Republican presidential nominee), and the rage on the right cannot be contained. Democrats furiously condemn a policy of fighting a war in Iraq and keeping prisoners in Guantanamo and the ethics of drone strikes and then, when they gain power…oh, the list is too long.

For better or worse, the justice system has become the last refuge for those of us looking for common ties with our fellow Americans. The need to arrest criminals and put them on trial transcends our petty differences, and allows varied communities to unite in common cause. Murder is terribly hard to politicize. As one of Henry the II’s sons says in The Lion in Winter, “I’ve never heard a corpse ask how it got so cold.”

And homicide investigations are largely successful. In most big cities, perhaps especially in Los Angeles and New York, every effort is made to comply with the law while hunting down those who have not. The LAPD polls regularly as the most respected municipal institution in Los Angeles. Our law enforcement agencies exist as working proof that government can move competently – even with bravery and selflessness – to do the right thing.

The unconscious fantasy element of procedural drama has evolved, from marveling at the intelligence of a particular detective, into a wistful desire that our entire body politic could put aside our mostly imaginary arguments long enough to focus on the crisis at hand: to drop our opinions in favor of the pattern of facts.

We love a good whodunit; bringing a murderer to heel satisfies our heroic impulses, and unites the audience with shared, public approval. If only we could figure out how to respect each other as well as we do the abstract principles of the justice system! That, ladies and gentlemen, is a mystery we ought to solve together.

In the meantime, procedural drama will have to do.

Here’s How Connie Britton Really Feels About That Michelle Obama Cameo

Things are about to get crazy!

“Nashville” is back tonight with a brand new episode and while the series might be winding down the drama is definitely heating up. Last week, the cast recorded a special live performance shot at the Ryman Auditorium, and fans can expect even more action in tonight’s episode.

Connie Britton spoke to HuffPost TV about the season so far, that special Michelle Obama episode and why fans should brace themselves for the Season 2 finale.

On working with Michelle Obama
“It was an amazing episode,” Britton said when asked about the first lady’s lauded cameo. “My character Rayna puts on a concert at an army base. We shot at Fort Campbell which is right outside Nashville and we shot this incredible performance for the troops. It was such an amazing day.”

Britton also gave us a glimpse of the role the first lady has on the show. “Michelle Obama recorded a message for the troops, so its a pretty exciting episode,” Britton said. Fans should also get ready for the show to pick up the pace heading towards the season finale.

“Really everything leading up to the finale is very exciting,” Britton said. “We’re really just going to be moving crazily to the finish line and the season finale is going to be spectacular.”

On how Season 2 might end
The last time we saw Rayna, the country crooner was going on national TV to address her “baby daddy” issues and come clean to Deacon about why she kept Maddie a secret all those years. But Britton says the next few episodes are going to focus less on family drama and more on Rayna’s music career.

“This whole season for Rayna has been about her creating her new label and what we start to see as we get to the season finale is that everything, especially after everything that’s happened with Scarlett, everything is riding on her album release,” Britton said. “We’re going to watch Rayna doing everything that she can to make a great performance. The season finale we get to see her be really victorious with that.”

As to what fans can expect from the season’s final episode? “There’s definitely a twist in the season finale that even when I read it in the script I was very surprised,” Britton said. “I think the audience is going to love it.”

The actress also revealed her plans for after the show ends its sophomore season which include a new film with Tina Fey and Adam Driver and continuing to be an ambassador for the Ponds skincare brand.

Holy $%!& It’s Friday!!! Here’s How You Can Make It A Good One.

Did this week just drag? Or maybe it zipped right by. We know, right?

Whatever your relationship with space and time, most of us are lucky enough to have another couple awesome days of work-free respite ahead. And that makes us want to…

Kimberly Cole

Or something. Because Friday! Here’s some stuff to help you start the weekend off right.

Drink like a famous person: Ernest Hemingway

The Green Isaac’s Special was one of his favs, apparently. You can whip up one of these at home by shaking two ounces of London dry gin with four ounces of coconut water, the juice of one lime, three dashes of Angostura bitters and some ice. Or, if you’re out at a less-sophisticated establishment, Hemingway also loved whiskey sodas.

Drink like a college student: “Text or Shot”

Everyone puts their phones in a pile. First player draws one at random and composes any message they want to anyone in the list of contacts. The owner of that phone then has to either send the text, or take a shot. Remember when drinking games involved cards? What a time to be alive. (Shoutout to Reddit user spaceonfire for this one.)

Pickup line: “Do you like this shirt?”

“It’s made of boyfriend material.” Don’t expect it to work. Alternatively, you can go up to someone and say, “Hi, I’m [your name]. How’s your night going?” If neither of these work, execute this dance move.

Something to think about: This Colorado teacher is giving her kidney to a student.

High school gym teacher Jen Sculley plans to donate her left kidney to a teenage student suffering from kidney disease. When she heard about the student’s plight and found out she was a match, Sculley said the decision was easy. Have you done something nice this week? There’s still time!

Sobering fact: Years of heavy drinking have a less negative effect on women, compared to men.

Researchers analyzing data from one of the largest studies on the long-term effects of alcohol found that two shots’ worth of alcohol consumed by a man every day for ten years is linked to significant cognitive decline. Not a shocker. But women consuming a corresponding amount of alcohol per day — they drank less due to female metabolism rates — were not as affected. It’s not clear why, but researchers suggested it could be due to estrogen.

Random piece of knowledge: A group of cats is called a “clowder.”

A male cat is a “tom” and a female is a “molly.” Cats also can’t taste sweets because they’re all essentially blood-thirsty killers.

Cheers! Have a great weekend!

Here’s What These Record Low Temperatures Say About Global Warming

As the frigid polar vortex makes itself at home over a giant swath of the country, it’s also serving as fodder for all those equally unwelcome climate change deniers. Despite the fact that 97 percent of scientists agree that man-made climate change is happening, the likes of Donald Trump say many of these record lows are the perfect proof to show that, no, the planet is not warming. Scientific right?

So, does this extreme winter weather prove that our planet is just as cold as it’s always been? No, not at all. But it does say this.

TK gifs

Dear Mr. Trump: Winter is always cold. And sometimes that means unimaginably cold.

Despite wind chills nearing -60 degrees Fahrenheit in Chicago and temperatures that left some parts of Canada colder than Mars, Arctic sea ice is still melting, atmospheric CO2 concentrations are still climbing and climate change is predicted to pose a far greater threat to the planet than many scientists thought.

Winters have become increasingly warmer over the past century, and despite the recent bout of subzero temps, global warming can make extreme weather events like the polar vortex even worse. In layman’s terms, as the planet warms and Arctic sea ice melts, the northern polar region equalizes a bit with temperatures farther south, causing the jet stream that forms a circular band around the northern latitudes to slow down.

This jet stream usually holds the far colder Arctic air in place with winds in excess of 100 mph, but pockets of cold can escape at times when the stream slows down, according to Time. That’s exactly what’s happened this time around, except the amount of cold that’s leaked past the seal is much larger than usual and has pushed farther south (take a look at this interactive graphic from the Guardian for a better visual).

Plain and simple, climate change can’t be proven or disproven by a single weather event. Period. Long-term trends have shown that climate change is happening and the IPCC has said it’s “extremely likely” humans are the dominant cause.

So, although it’s counterintuitive, the current frostbitten state of the country may be further proof that yes, the planet is warming — and climate change is here with a vengeance.
