Guarding LeBron James ‘no challenge’, says Beverley

Patrick Beverley described guarding LeBron James as "no challenge" after the Los Angeles Clippers' loss to the Lakers on Sunday. James' 28 points, nine assists and seven rebounds helped the Lakers beat the Clippers 112-103 at the Staples Center. But asked about guarding the four-time NBA MVP, Beverley quickly shut down questions.

Davis leads way in Lakers’ seventh straight win, James out

With LeBron James sidelined, Anthony Davis knew he had to do a little more – everybody had to do a little more to pick up the slack. Davis had 23 points and six rebounds in three quarters and the Los Angeles Lakers won their seventh straight game and NBA-record 18th in a row on the road against the Western Conference, beating the injury-plagued Golden State Warriors 116-86 on Thursday night without King James. ''LeBron, when he's out, it's taking away a lot of things that we do, so it's on all of us to make sure we kind of fill those voids, and I think we did that tonight,'' Davis said.

Giannis’ NBA All-Star Game block on LeBron James had Steph Curry hyped

Here's a sentence I didn't think I would write Sunday: Officiating decisions in the NBA All-Star Game brought out plenty of passion. The NBA's format change, where the winner had to score 24 more points (in honor of Kobe Bryant) in the fourth quarter than the leading score of the third, led to one of the best finishes to an All-Star Game in recent memory. The intensity was perhaps best defined by Giannis Antetokounmpo guarding fellow All-Star captain and namesake LeBron James in isolation.

It Was James Cameron’s Idea to Kill THAT Terminator Character

Full SPOILERS ahead for Terminator: Dark Fate!

Many Terminator fans are shocked and upset — to put it mildly — about John Connor, the future savior of humanity, getting killed off in the early moments of Terminator: Dark Fate. The decision to kill the franchise mainstay wasn’t made by director Tim Miller or any of the cast but by Dark Fate producer and Terminator co-creator himself, James Cameron.

During a recent roundtable interview with the press, Cameron explained: “The idea that we whack John in the first 30 seconds, that was my idea. I said, ‘If we really want to surprise the audience and we want to get everybody off balance…'”

Cameron continued, “It’s like we’ve invested so much across the first two films and then to some degree or other in the subsequent ones, that I wasn’t involved with, in this whole John Connor mythology. It’s like, ‘Let’s just get that right off the table. Let’s just pull the carpet out from underneath all of our assumptions of what a Terminator movie is going to be about. Let’s just put a bullet in his head at a pizzeria in the first 45 seconds.'”

LeBron James’ Unknwn and Thom Browne to Launch Collab

This holiday season will see the launch of a collaboration between Thom Browne and Miami-based retailer Unknwn.
The designer label confirmed there will be a new collaboration with the fashion and footwear retailer co-owned by LeBron James, Jaron Kanfer and Frankie Walker Jr.
Little was shared about the upcoming capsule except that it will be a nine-piece collection that will launch in-store and online in December after the opening of Unknwn’s store in the trendy Wynwood district in Miami.
The relationship between Browne, the NBA great and Unknwn goes back several seasons. The retailer carries the brand online, and James is often spotted wearing the designer’s wares. During the NBA Playoffs in 2018, Brown spearheaded a big fashion moment by having Browne create matching custom tailored looks for his entire Cleveland Cavaliers team.

Shortly after, Browne signed a three-year partnership with FC Barcelona to be the team’s official off-field and formalwear uniform provider. Following the deal, Ermenegildo Zegna Group in August 2018 acquired an 85 percent stake in Thom Browne.
The brand also launched in October its first line of fragrances at its stores, online and Dover Street Market.

Nike Stays Silent in the Wake of LeBron James’ Controversy

STATUS UPDATE: While Hong Kong protestors were photographed burning shirts imprinted with LeBron James’ name on Tuesday, Nike, his leading sponsor, did not respond to a request for comment regarding his pro-China stance.
The Los Angeles Lakers star is the latest NBA player to get caught in the firestorm that was sparked by the Houston Rockets’ general manager Daryl Morey’s pro-Hong Kong tweet. That led to an international kerfuffle, with backlash from Chinese companies and consumers. Morey subsequently deleted the controversial tweet. China Central Television, for example, boycotted broadcasting NBA pre-season games in China. Tencent Holdings, however, live-streamed two NBA games Monday played outside of China.
Before the Lakers played the Golden State Warriors Monday night, James told reporters that Morey “wasn’t educated on the situation at hand. And he spoke. And so many people could have been harmed, not only financially but emotionally, physically and spiritually.”
James later appeared to try to tamp down the situation on Twitter with this post: “My team and this league just went through a difficult week. I think people need to understand what a tweet or statement can do to others. And I believe nobody stopped and considered what would happen. Could have waited a week

N.Peal Cashmere Creates James Bond-Inspired Collection

From his Tom Ford suits to his Aston Martin cars, James Bond is legendary for his classic, sartorial style. He’s also comfortable in a cashmere sweater, which is where N.Peal comes in.
In “Skyfall,” the 2012 installation of the series, the stylist for the film turned to N.Peal cashmere when she was searching for a lightweight blue sweater that would match the eye color of its star, Daniel Craig. The relationship continued with 2015’s “Spectre” where N.Peal’s cashmere knits were used in that film as well.
The next film, “No Time to Die,” is due out in April, and Adam Holdsworth, the owner and managing director of the U.K.-based N.Peal, is closing to finalizing a deal to become one of the official partners for the film. But while the ink may not be dry on the contract yet, that hasn’t stopped N.Peal from creating N.Peal 007, a cashmere collection that celebrates 50 years of Bond. It will be offered for sale beginning on Oct. 18 on the N.Peal site, at its five stores in London and one in New York, as well as on Farfetch.
The collection features 13 pieces covering the six actors who have played Bond over the past half-century. This

James Harden and Daniel Patrick to Create Capsule

Daniel Patrick and NBA superstar James Harden are cooking up a capsule collection.
The designer previewed the basketball-inspired offering and two pairs of Adidas Harden 4.0 sneakers at an event in New York City on Wednesday that drew NBA athletes P.J. Tucker and Javale McGee and other guests.
The two pieces that Patrick teased, a tan hoodie and black basketball shorts, are signature styles for Patrick, who launched his own label with his wife, Jenny, in 2011. The hoodie is oversized with a taller, basketball short waistband, velvet in its hood and neon green fat stripes on the sleeves that Patrick said he “wanted to be the focal point of the collection.” The black basketball shorts have a neon green waistband and velvet pockets to match the hoodie.
Both pieces feature dual tags that have Patrick and Harden’s signatures, a rubberized 3-D logo and Adidas badge of sport logo, which Patrick explained is done differently in the capsule. “We got the outline without the symbol so it’s more of a graphic,” the designer said.
The Harden 4.0 sneakers, which the Houston Rockets star will be wearing beginning Nov. 1, also sport neon green colors — one totally on the upper with a gray toe,

Lily James to Model for Burberry; Ryan Reynolds Already Saving Trees With Eddie Bauer

Following in the legendary footsteps of Kate Moss and Cara Delevingne would be a formidable task for even the most sought-after of supermodels. So when Burberry went looking for someone to take their place as the face for its My Burberry fragrance, the company had to find someone who could live up to that level of beauty and sophistication. And as impossible as it may seem, the brand actually managed to cast the role perfectly with British actress Lily James.

Lily James My BurberryKarwai Tang/WireImage

Despite the fact that James has starred in a handful of big box office films, including Cinderella, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and of course the TV smash-hit Downton Abbey, this announcement marks the actress first global advertising campaign ever. She’ll serve as the face for My Burberry Black, “an intense and sensual” new fragrance, starring in a film and photo series shot by Mario Testino debuting in August.

“I am thrilled to be officially joining the Burberry family,” James enthused, “I am so proud to be British, so it really means a lot…I don’t want to give away too much but I had a lot of fun showing a different side of myself.” Does this mean we could see a drastic hair color change in the actress’s near future?

First Nighter: James Earl Jones, Cicely Tyson Play “The Gin Game”; Oren Safdie’s Unseemly “Unseamly”

If you think you’re about to hear anything critical of the two old pros James Earl Jones and Cicely Tyson in director Leonard Foglia’s revival of D. L. Coburn’s 1977 comedy, The Gin Game, at the Golden Theatre, you better think again. As two lonely residents at a home for the aged who find comfort playing cards with each other in a rundown backyard, they’re well nigh perfect–which is what you already knew they would be.

It may be overstating it to say the characters they play both find comfort in the gin game. Tyson’s Fonsia Dorsey is very happy with the cards she dealt, because she’s the one declaring “Gin” just about every time, whereas Jones’s Weller Martin, the supposed expert at the game, never appears to have a fighting chance against her.

His card-playing prowess, only worsening as the two acts march on, is, of course what Fonsia and Weller discuss repeatedly, but they get around to other subjects as well. One topic is their families, who are either literal or figurative distances from them. The goings-on at the home is another ready topic, and when one of the dances underway inside moves them, they even dance. Needless to say, that’s a big audience-delighting development.

Weller, who can be loud and prone to anger when losing, has a habit of swearing. It’s a character trait Fonsia dislikes. So Coburn goes for laughs by eventually having her lose control of her tongue. Putting four-letter obscenities into the mouths of octogenarians–okay, nonagenarian in Tyson’s case–is a cheap trick but it works.

This is the third time the crowd-pleaser has adorned Broadway–Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronin, Julie Harris and Charles Durning preceded the current stars–and the play is no worse for wear. Whether it was ever a flawless piece of writing is less certain. It does have a second-act problem, which is that Coburn knows what to do with Fonsia and Weller up to a point and then doesn’t reckon how to take them further. By the time the second act ends, it’s become too much a repetition of the first.

In addition to Jones and Tyson, who do have the advantage of sitting for much of their on-stage time, there’s another truly standout production feature. It’s Riccardo Hernandez’s set. Along with a handy card table and a couple of chairs for the card players to occupy, he’s piled any number of discarded wheelchairs and walkers against the upstage wall.

Those are a constant reminder that though they were once used, their owners are no longer around. Somehow keeping death as a constant adds vitality to the energetic Jones and Tyson. Fonsia and Weller may not have that much longer to enjoy their gin game, but as played by Jones and Tyson, the pair is far from adding any discarded device to Hernandez’s stack.
******************
Sexual harassment has been a topic of conversation for some time, but whether Oren Safdie’s Unseamly, at Urban Stages, adds anything to the welter of current examinations is questionable.

In a play that slowly disintegrates into hysteria, Malina (Gizel Jimenez) has come to lawyer Adam (Tommy Schrider) in hopes he will convince his firm to take on her harassment case against Standard apparel company CEO Ira (Jonathan Silver), whose sometimes thoughtful and sometimes careless treatment of employees is well known. (Does Safdie have former American Apparel head honcho Dov Charney in mind as a model for Ira? Most likely.)

Initially, Adam listens to the lithe and sensual Malina objectively, attempting while he takes notes to have her describe incidents that would hold up in court as undeniable instances of harassment. As she tells her tales of being involved with Ira over an eight-month period, Adam hears nothing he finds solid evidence and initially dismisses her. But as Malina recounts her first interview with Ira, the shameless womanizer materializes, and while Adam continues taking notes on the sides of Brian Dudkiewicz’s clean-walled set, Ira and Malina reenact their past.

As they do, Unseamly slowly changes from a play about sexual harassment into a soft porn charade with sexual harassment as its handy peg. The more Malina, in time changing into a black lace outfit, shakes her booty even as Ira shakes his–there’s even a Malina-Ira dance break that Jimenez choreographed–the more lawyer Adam loses his objectivity and begins to get drawn into behavior less reflective of a professional keeping his law firm uppermost in his mind. Eventually, he shows signs of being as sexually compulsive as Ira, even down to talking at Ira’s breakneck speed.

As the audience discovers nothing in Malina’s saga that shows her as being anything but complicit in her interactions with Ira, Unseamly takes on the appearance of an overwrought screed about all men being helplessly licentious where women, no matter how agreeable they may or may not be, are concerned. The unpleasant irony is that Unseamly ends up exploiting exactly what it pretends to be exposing.

One thing definitely true of Unseamly is that the non-stop hyperactivity demands three actors speaking and moving indefatigably. As directed by Sarah C Carlsen, Jimenez, Schrider and Silver are up for every bit of that.

Ryan Reynolds’ Friend Tried To Sell Photos Of Baby James, And It Was Crushing

Ryan Reynolds experienced a betrayal of a particularly hurtful kind after the birth of his daughter, James.

“A guy that I’d known for my whole life, one of my closest friends growing up, he had been shopping pictures of my baby around,” Reynolds told GQ for the magazine’s latest issue. “I kind of got in front of it, which is good. But it was a slightly dark period. A bad couple of weeks.”

The “guy” was a close friend of Reynolds who he has known for 25 years.

“It was like a death. It was like one of those devastating things to find out,” he said, adding that the person did it for the money and didn’t think he’d get caught. “It was, like, so kind of shocking. There isn’t really a conversation to have. It’s just, ‘Oh, well, now I’m never going to see you or talk to you again, unfortunately.’ That’s kind of how it worked out.”

Fatherhood has been a life-changer for the “Deadpool” star, who welcomed James with wife Blake Lively last December.

“I’ve learned that an inordinate amount of clichés are completely true,” he added. “Like, there is this kid here that I would walk through fire for. Or, maybe not fire. Like, a very hot pavement, I’d walk through. A shag rug.”

Who Said it? Donald Trump or NBA Superstar Lebron James? The Answers Will Not Surprise You.

Presidential candidate and former Comedy Central Roastee Donald Trump has made multiple headlines this year for his repetitive racist and fascist-like remarks. His cartoonish rich-guy cliches have lent themselves to multiple satire articles. Some of them are better than others. What we’re getting at is that it’s harder than we had initially anticipated. Anyways, this is “Who Said It: Donald Trump or Lebron James?” You’ll probably get all of these right. They’re not that hard. Whatever. Here. Content.

“I will build the best wall, the biggest, the strongest, not penetrable, they won’t be crawling over it, like giving it a little jump and they’re over the wall, it will cost us trillions.”

Answer: Donald Trump

Pretty obvious right? Like it would be really weird for Lebron James to take such a radical stance on immigration during his run to 11 NBA All-Star selections. I guess it could feasibly happen, but it would be sort of out of character for him to actively try to appeal to the racist fears of Middle America out of nowhere.

“You know, God gave me a gift to do other things besides play the game of basketball.”

Answer: Lebron James.

Okay I guess technically Donald Trump could have said this. But realistically, the only time when this quote would make sense coming from him is if someone asked him “Donald, why aren’t you a professional basketball player?” Pretty specific question to ask him, given his reasons of notoriety, you know?

“Black guys counting my money! I hate it. The only kind of people I want counting my money are little short guys that wear yarmulkes every day.”

Answer: Donald Trump

Again, this shouldn’t really blow your mind. Lebron James himself is black, so it would be pretty nuts for him to say he’s super against black guys counting his money. I can’t say that I know he’s not an anti-semite, but I feel like he wouldn’t generalize all jewish people like that. It’d be pretty fucked up if he did. I mean he’s better than that, you know? You should be 3 for 3 right now.

“The Oscars were a great night for Mexico, and why not – they are ripping off the US more than almost any other nation.”

Answer: Lebron James. No just kidding it’s Trump again.

Can you imagine if Lebron James was the same guy, but just really hated Mexicans the same way Trump does? Like, a dominant point forward and NBA champion, but just REALLY fucking cannot stand Mexicans. That’d be so weird. Anyways, yeah, you should have gotten this one right too. Sorry. I wish this quiz could be harder. We just didn’t plan it out very well.

“I love Kobe. I love his competitive nature. I love competing against him. I talked to him before the season just to say it’s great to have him back”

Answer: Lebron James

Are we even fucking trying at this point? Yeah, obviously that’s a Lebron James quote. Okay well, we warned you. Article is over. Whatever. We tried.

Olsens to Bring Elizabeth and James In-house

IN THE OLSEN HOUSE: Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen have made the call to bring their Elizabeth and James label in-house for the first time since its 2007 launch. The licensee, Los Angeles-based Jaya Apparel Group, has produced the contemporary collection from the start. Founded in 1982, the 140-person West Coast conglomerate also manufactures the Olsenboye label, various Disney licenses, proprietary ones and various private labels.
The two-time Council of Fashion Designers of America women’s wear winners’ new setup with Elizabeth and James will be evident with the pre-fall/fall 2016 apparel collection.
The decision was purely contractual, as in one that has wound down, according to a spokeswoman for the designers and Jaya Apparel’s chief executive officer Jane Siskin. “It’s been an amazing eight years and we’ve enjoyed working with them immensely. We look forward to a great future for both parties,” Siskin said.
Known to be entrenched in The Row, Elizabeth and James and their other fashion ventures, the Olsens stand to become even more involved with the day-to-day operations of their secondary label.

James Cameron Cried The First Time He Heard James Horner’s ‘Titanic’ Theme

Legendary film composer James Horner died in a plane crash on Monday, but he will always be remembered for his music.

Horner was best known for his two-time Oscar-winning score to James Cameron’s “Titanic,” as well as his scores to “Braveheart,” “Apollo 13,” “Avatar,” “Field of Dreams” and “A Beautiful Mind.” The 61-year-old, who has composed music for over 100 films, was also an avid pilot. The two-seater single-engine S312 Tucano he was flying on Monday crashed in Santa Barbara, California.

While many celebrities, collaborators and fellow musicians have remembered Horner on Twitter, Cameron paid tribute to the composer on The Hollywood Reporter’s site on Tuesday. The “Titanic” director looked back on working with Horner on everything from the first project they both worked on, “Battle Beyond the Stars,” up to “Avatar.” Although the two got off to a rough start while working on “Aliens” together because of timing issues, the filmmaker said that he knew he had to work with Horner again on “Titanic,” telling THR, “I thought, ‘I don’t care what happened, I want to work with James.'”

Cameron remembered the first time he heard Horner’s concept for the “Titanic” theme. “I drove over to his house,” Cameron said of Horner, “and he sat at the piano and said, ‘I see this as the main theme for the ship.’ He played it once through and I was crying.” When the director heard Horner play his idea for “Rose’s Theme,” he said he knew the musician had “cracked the heart and soul” of the movie.

The filmmaker told Entertainment Weekly that he cried during every song Horner played that day in his studio. “I said to him, ‘You’ve done it,'” Cameron told EW. “He said, ‘I haven’t done anything yet.’ And I said, ‘James, you’ve done it.'”

For the full tribute, head to The Hollywood Reporter.

Comedy Legend Carl Reiner On The New Guard Of Late Night: James Corden Is ‘Unbelievable’

Comedy legend Carl Reiner knows a thing or two about late night: he’s the only man on the planet to have appeared on every incarnation of the “Tonight Show,” from Steve Allen to Jimmy Fallon.

And with all the changes going on in late night TV, Reiner is very optimistic. While he calls Fallon an “amazing talent,” Reiner especially likes the newest name in late night, James Corden, host of the “Late Late Show” on CBS.

“He’s unbelievable,” said Reiner. “He sings, he dances… he is very graceful and he sings beautifully.”

Anna Kendrick Skewers James Corden In A ‘Pitch Perfect’-Style Riff-Off

“The Late Late Show” was basically a college a cappella concert Friday night.

Anna Kendrick joined host James Corden in a “Pitch Perfect”-style riff-off to determine who had the best a cappella chops. Along with a cappella group The Filharmonic, the two sang hits including *NSYNC’s “Bye, Bye, Bye “and Pat Benatar’s “Love Is A Battlefield.” Kendrick took home the title, but with those ace song choices and Kendrick and Corden’s fun dance vibes, isn’t everyone a winner? (Not to mention it was an “Into the Woods” reunion.)

Later in the show, Corden sat down with Kendrick and her “Pitch Perfect” co-stars Brittany Snow and Hailee Steinfeld.

The Books of James C. Patch: Utopia

The Books of James C. Patch: Utopia

This is the continuing story of James C. Patch and Jacob Masterson. The first book, The Books of James C. Patch: The Barrier chronicled the adventures of Jacob Masterson as he attempted to destroy the evil barrier that was preventing spirits from entering the Utopia on the other side. James C. Patch was an author living in the early 1900’s when tragedy struck his family when he decided to write down what he found out about death and the afterlife. James C. Patch was a split-spirit. A spirit that could split from his body prior to death and was able to cross through the barrier and see through his spirit what was on the other side. While in his spirited state he noticed millions of spirits that were not able to penetrate the barrier. The majority of these spirits were children who had not had time to collect a lot of memories and those are the spirits that the barrier preyed upon. Jacob found out that memories were the key to the rapid penetration of the barrier and they were able to connect with loved ones that were already on the other side. This is the third and final installment.

James Van Der Beek Was Caught with ‘Dawson’s Creek’ Gay Porn

You know you’ve made it when your TV show is made into porn, right? That’s certainly how James Van Der Beek saw it during his “Dawson’s Creek” days.

While chatting with Vulture about his “Power Rangers” “deboot,” the “Dawson’s Creek” star brought up a fond memory from his days on the show.

“I remember when I was doing ‘Rules of Attraction,’ and the hair and makeup department got me a copy of the ‘Dawson’s Crack’ porn movie as a gag gift. It was on VHS, that’s how long ago that was, and I thought it was hilarious,” Van Der Beek explained.

“I couldn’t wait to bring it back and show everybody in North Carolina and say, ‘We’ve made it! Look at us. They’ve made a porno out of us,'” he continued. “This was right after 9/11, and I get flagged by security, and somebody opened up the suitcase, and there’s a gay porno right on top. Not just any gay porno, but one based on the show that I was on. Which is kind of excellent.”

Thirteen years later, 38-year-old Van Der Beek is starring in “CSI: Cyber” and has three kids, but he certainly isn’t ashamed of that porn incident — he tweeted about it after his interview.

Candy-Hauling Man Used ‘James Bond’ Device To Hide License From Toll Booth: Cops

Pablo Ortega

(Reuters) – A trucker accused of using a James Bond-style retractable bumper to evade a $ 95 toll on the George Washington Bridge has been charged with using burglary tools, police said on Thursday.

Hauling a load of candy across the bridge toward New York City on Wednesday, Pablo Ortega flipped a switch on his dashboard as he approached the toll gates over the Hudson River. That engaged a device that tilted up the truck’s bumper and attached license plate, said Joseph Pentangelo, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police.

“The officer positioned at the toll booth sees the bumper lift to a 90-degree angle. This makes it unreadable to the EZ-Pass reader,” Pentangelo said, referring to the electronic device that collects the toll from vehicles at the bridge entrance at Fort Lee, New Jersey.

The Port Authority, which operates the bridge, charges a $ 95 toll for an 18-wheeler crossing the Hudson into upper Manhattan.

Authorities also found the rear license plate of the red 1997 Peterbilt tractor-trailer was obscured with grease and unreadable.

Ortega, 45, of the New York borough of Queens is the owner-operator of the big rig. He was charged with tampering with public records and possession of burglary tools. It was not known how many times he had used the device.

“He did volunteer that the kit cost him about $ 2,500,” said Pentangelo, noting its legal use is to protect bumpers from getting scraped at construction sites and other places with uneven pavement.

The device is the most sophisticated used so far by a toll scofflaw, said Pentangelo, noting others have created homemade devices to lift up the license plate itself or have used tape to obscure the plate.

Sundance So Far: James Franco’s Ex-Gay Film And Greta Gerwig & Noah Baumbach’s Latest

After being wowed by “The End of the Tour” and “Z for Zachariah,” Saturday’s Sundance slate was more of a mixed bag. But with some of our favorite names like James Franco, Kristin Wiig and Greta Gerwig, there is plenty to talk about with the films HuffPost Entertainment saw on Saturday — perhaps most notably, the buzzed-about transgender-focused underdog, “Tangerine.”

“Mistress America”
Directed by Noah Baumbach
Written by Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig
Starring Greta Gerwig and Lola Kirke

mistress america

Filmmaker Noah Baumbach collaborated with actress, and now girlfriend, Greta Gerwig in “Greenberg” (2010) and again on “Frances Ha” (2012) — the latter a film that stole hipster hearts and turned everyone into an instant Gerwig fan. Our hopes were high for their next film “Mistress America,” which premiered at Sundance on Saturday evening.

Gerwig and Baumbach co-wrote the film with Baumbach directing, and, like “Frances Ha,” it is in many ways a love letter (part two) to New York. Gerwig stars as a wacky, jack-of-all-trades young woman who lives in Times Square and injects her future stepsister (Lola Kirke), a freshman in college whom she barely knows, with a much-needed jolt of energy.

The real star of the film is Kirke. Her facial features and slight, adorable lisp might seem familiar — she is the younger sister of Jemima Kirke, one of the stars of HBO’s “Girls.” But Lola Kirke steals the film with her perfect innocence, her desire to be a great writer, her need to feel more alive. She has a face and aura that John Hughes would have loved. She would have starred in his ‘80s films. She just has that look.

Gerwig, on the other hand, while still magnetic on screen, plays a character that is more flawed that usual. More manic, even. She is self-obsessed and self-righteous and sometimes feels like a cyclone spinning out of control, singing and dancing on stage, teaching a SoulCycle class and showing up unannounced at an ex-friend’s doorstep, asking for money to start a restaurant. She says things like “the television show is the new novel,” and “there’s no cheating when you’re 18; you should all be touching each other all the time.”

“Mistress America” is more screwball comedy than is typical for Baumbach, but there’s no doubt that the duo write incredible dialogue -– the scene where an old classmate of Gerwig’s tells her off for being mean is incredibly funny and pleasurable. Add a 1980s soundtrack and vibe, and you have yet another unique Baumbach production. — SB

“I Am Michael”
Directed by Michael Kelly
Written by Michael Kelly and Stacy Miller
Starring James Franco, Zachary Quinto, Charlie Carver and Emma Roberts

i am michael

Do you know that feeling of walking out of a movie thinking, “Well, that was … fine”? That’s the crux of “I Am Michael,” the dramatization of a buzzy 2011 New York Times article written by the formerly serious boyfriend of gay activist Michael Glatze, who denounced his homosexuality after a health scare and became a Christian pastor. First-time director Justin Kelly, under the wing of producer Gus Van Sant, who directed James Franco in the much different queer-activism film “Milk,” casts no judgment on Michael’s life in this fairly objective portrait, yet still manages to end on a note of skepticism. But the chronological timestamps that split this movie into chapters according to the various cities in which Michael resides feel like intrusive proclamations that the pacing is a tick-tock of upswings and downswings in his life. That sometimes strips the film of the nuance needed to delve into the knotty mind of a man who rose to savior status in the LGBT community and then wilted into a disheartening turncoat.

That said, Franco, playing Michael, does his finest work since “127 Hours” (or “Spring Breakers,” but that seems like a strange comparison), and Zachary Quinto is strong as his perplexed but patient boyfriend. Before Michael’s heart palpitations raise life-altering questions about what will happen to him when he dies, the two actors boast a specific chemistry that doubles as a reflection of the state of the LGBT landscape in the late ‘90s, around the time of Matthew Shepard’s murder, and early 2000s. Michael’s turning point coincides with the rise of gay rights and the nation’s shifting viewpoints — an aspect the film glazes over in favor of surface-level dialogue.

Even with Van Sant aboard, this film feels like the work of a first-time director. By the time we find Michael at seminary (where he gets engaged to a woman, played by an uncertain Emma Roberts), the movie’s 98-minute running time feels like it requires more chapters of our own lives than we care to devote to what should be a less impersonal product. There’s no soapbox for this movie to climb atop, though — this is a character study and not an indictment, and for that, “I Am Michael” is worthwhile. — MJ

“Tangerine”
Directed by Sean Baker
Written by Sean Baker and Chris Bergoch
Starring Kitana Kiki Rodriguez, Mya Taylor, Karren Karagulian, Mickey O’Hagan, Alla Tumanian and James Ransone

tangerine

“Tangerine” is a window into a very specific room. Or rooms, shall we say. Shot in a taxi, on the streets and in parking lots of Los Angeles, director Sean Baker crafts an up close and personal voyage story of Sin-Dee, a transgender prostitute who, along with her friend, trek around the city in search of Sin-Dee’s unfaithful pimp boyfriend.

We see exteriors of Los Angeles like few films have captured before; most of “Tangerine” moves on foot or takes quick breaks in strip malls or in paying john’s cars. It moves through taco bars, motel rooms, bus stops, freeways, public transit platforms and even Sunset Boulevard.

But what is most miraculous about the film is that it was all shot on an iPhone. And in just about four weeks time. That fact alone is astonishing given the quality of the film’s aesthetic and style. But “Tangerine” is not just a moving Instagram photo. Baker cast the stars of the film, all untrained actors, at an LGBTQ center in Los Angeles. They fight, scream, cry and move all over the city with an authenticity.

Classical music and dance beats punctuate the sprawling shots of street corners and characters holding court in the donut shop. The city is their home. There is more repetition of the word “bitch” than possibly any film to come before it. But there are many layers of tenderness and intimacy that inevitably connect the leads of the film to a world that is much, much larger than they are. — SB

“The Diary Of A Teenage Girl”
Written and directed by Marielle Heller
Starring Bel Powley, Alexander Skarsgård, Kristen Wiig and Christopher Meloni

diary of a teenage girl

Plenty of movies have attempted to capture the thread of American ennui that sprung up in the afterglow of the 1960s’ hippie crusade and sexual revolution. Most of them cast broad strokes over the flower power that enlivened so much of the country and disturbed so many others. “The Diary of a Teenage Girl” offers a unique take on one dysfunctional family navigating through a mélange that mystifies their sense of purpose in 1974 San Francisco.

At the center of that family is 15-year-old Minnie Goetz (Bel Powley). We first see her gleaming as she glides down the street sporting a proud smirk on her face. “I had sex today. Holy shit,” she says in a voice-over that stems from the tape recorder that houses her audio diary. Sometimes we hear that diary as narration, and sometimes we see Minnie lying on her bed, logging insecure thoughts about body image and self-worth. Crazed for the love and attraction her rowdy, Patty Hearst-obsessed mother (an excellent Kristen Wiig) often doesn’t provide, the emotionally immature teen begins an ongoing assignation with her mom’s boyfriend (Alexander Skarsgård) that inaugurates her sexual awakening. As portrayed winningly by Powley, one of Sundance’s breakout stars, Minnie’s distinctive voice carries this film. She is a budding graphic artist, and the movie frequently morphs into charming animation. (Ever wondered what it would be like to see a character picture a stranger’s hand-drawn penis emerge from his pants?) Once Minnie’s virginity is gone, she embarks on one sexual tryst and drug experimentation after the next. One of the finest scenes comes during an acid trip with her mother’s boyfriend that reliably calls upon the phantasmagoric illustrations that occur throughout.

It’s possible there’s too much languor in “Diary of a Teenage Girl,” but first-time writer/director Marielle Heller does an impressive job adapting Phoebe Gloekner’s unusual novel, which also features hand-drawn illustrations throughout. It’s certainly a movie that grows on you after leaving the theater. Its finest achievement comes in not asking for a moral calculation of its characters’ actions. You’ll recognize the confusion that troubles Minnie’s understanding of the adults around her, and you’ll fiend for a glimmer of hope for the adventure that awaits her future life. — MJ

Josh Brolin Recalls James Gandolfini’s Willingness To Mortify Himself For A Scene

Eighteen months after James Gandolfini’s death, Hollywood is still reminiscing about the “Sopranos” star’s contributions to entertainment. In an exclusive clip from the Best Supporting Actor roundtable airing Monday night on Epix, “Inherent Vice” actor Josh Brolin recounts a story about Gandolfini imitating a chicken before takes on the HBO series in order to ensure he’d mortified himself enough offscreen so that nothing onscreen could intimidate him.

“You take your technique — it’s like golfing — and then you work on it, work on it, work on it, and the one time that you don’t think about anything is when you actually swing,” Brolin says after detailing Gandolfini’s penchant.

Best Supporting Actor marks Epix’s third Oscar roundtable, part of its ongoing “Hollywood Sessions” series, produced alongside the Los Angeles Times. Brolin is joined by Edward Norton (“Birdman”), Mark Ruffalo (“Foxcatcher”), J.K. Simmons (“Whiplash”) and Christoph Waltz (“Big Eyes”). The full roundtable airs at 8 p.m.

The Book We’re Talking About: ‘A Brief History of Seven Killings’ By Marlon James

A Brief History of Seven Killings
by Marlon James
Riverhead Books, $ 20.00
Published Oct. 2, 2014

The Book We’re Talking About is a weekly review combining plot description and analysis with fun tidbits about the book.

What we think:

James’ third novel is one of our Best Books of 2014 for good reason — epic, immersive, acutely observed and deeply moving, it’s worth every long hour it demands of the reader.

In 1976, Bob Marley was in Jamaica to play a concert before the upcoming general election in hopes of quelling unrest and calling for peace. Two days before the concert, seven gunmen burst into his home and shot Marley, his wife, his manager, and several others, leaving all of the victims fortunately alive but wounded.

This earthshaking event forms the cornerstone of James’ vast, ambitious novel that stretches from 1976 Jamaica to 1991 New York, examining the ripple effects of American colonial interference, Jamaican turf wars, the rising drug trade, and, specifically, that 1976 assassination attempt on the world-famous singer.

James narrates through a wide array of characters, drawing from the perspectives of a dead former politician, an American journalist from Rolling Stone, Jamaican dons and gang members, a girl who hoped her one-night-stand with Marley would be her family’s ticket out of the conflict-wracked country, and even some of the doped-up, desperate kids conscripted to carry out the assassination attempt. Marley and his family don’t speak for themselves and even recede to the background; this story is predicated on the reggae star, but it’s not his story.

The cacophony of different narrators can be overwhelming, as James captures each speaker with a unique cadence and perspective distinct to his or her identity. Delving through the assorted vernaculars and streams of consciousness — often those of deeply frightened, traumatized, or heavily drugged people — can range from tough to harrowing reading. It’s undeniably worth the work, however, as James’ meticulous characterization makes his writing exceptionally vivid and compelling.

Through his speakers, James shows the planning of the assault, the immediate fallout, and the attempts at retribution — highlighting a dark side of the singer commonly seen as a peaceable figure. As time goes by, and the shooting drifts into the past, however, the consequences linger; not every shooter has come to justice. As the fragile, post-shooting peace between the two dominant gangs in Kingston inevitably crumbles — one character notes, “Peace can’t happen when too much to gain in war” — the remaining assailants have become pivotal figures at the heart of the burgeoning cocaine trade between Colombia and the U.S.

This dangerous, but profitable, turn to trafficking solidifies the status of central character Josey Wales, don and gang leader, but exacerbates the renewed, cascading cycle of poverty and brutality surrounding him. In the bleak neighborhoods of New York where his enforcers prowl, and the streets of Kingston, the infusion of crack and, eventually, heroin — and the accompanying profits — provide a new pretext for casual violence and constant squalor.

Meanwhile, the past continues to haunt the central characters — including journalist Alex Pierce, who can’t stop digging around for the true story of what happened in 1976, when he was in Jamaica on assignment for Rolling Stone; and Nina, a local girl who scrabbles for years to escape her past, leaving her name, her home, and eventually her country, because of what she saw that night.

James’ long, sprawling, masterfully woven together novel finds its redemption in the indomitability of the human will to live, and its light in a sly, sardonic humor that finds its way in amongst the horrific violence and grinding, Sisyphean cycle of misery. Though it by no means makes for a brief read, or an easy one, it’s a brilliant, heartbreaking and searing one that will burrow its way deep into the reader’s soul.

What other reviewers think:
The New York Times: “It’s epic in every sense of that word: sweeping, mythic, over-the-top, colossal and dizzyingly complex. It’s also raw, dense, violent, scalding, darkly comic, exhilarating and exhausting — a testament to Mr. James’s vaulting ambition and prodigious talent.”

NPR: “A Brief History is, with dozens of characters and motives, impressively dizzying. Ultimately, it’s also a beautiful mess.”

The Independent: “This is a book the energy, intelligence and intellectual range of which demands and rewards attention.”

Who wrote it?
This is Marlon James’ third novel. His previous novel, The Book of Night Women, was a National Book Critics Circle Award finalist. His first novel, John Crow’s Devil, was a Los Angeles Times Book Prize finalist for first fiction and was a New York Times Editors’ Choice book. James was born in Jamaica and now lives in Minneapolis.

Who will read it?
Fans of complex, multi-narrator epics and challenging stream-of-consciousness prose stylings. Also, readers interested in fiction that digs into the thorny issues of race, class, drug trade and political corruption.

Opening lines:
“Listen.

“Dead people never stop talking. Maybe because death is not death at all, just a detention after school. You know where you’re coming from and you’re always returning from it. You know where you’re going though you never seem to get there and you’re just dead. Dead.”

Notable passage:
“Jamaica never gets worse or better, it just finds new ways to stay the same. You can’t change the country, but maybe you can change yourself. I don’t know who’s thinking that. I’m done with thinking, quite frankly. Every time I think it takes me to a bus exploding or me looking down the barrel of a gun. Shit, all that shaking is me, not the couch. I mean, settee. Goddamn, that man is changing me. I like to act like I don’t like it. But I don’t think I fool him.”

James Franco And Seth Rogen Are Naked, Just Chillin’ In The Wilderness

We seriously can’t put anything past these two.

James Franco and Seth Rogen’s latest ridiculous stunt involves hanging out naked in the wilderness together and, of course, documenting their nude adventures on Instagram. Franco shared two photos of himself with Rogen on his Instagram account Friday and another on Saturday. While Franco references “Naked And Afraid” in his caption we can’t say for sure if these two are officially filming an episode for the reality show. Let’s face it: It’s totally believable that this is simply Franco and Rogen’s idea of a good time.

Why I’m Absolutely Sure James Franco Is Straight

When I was at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), one of the most legendary campus rumors was that James Franco had once crashed a Halloween house party wearing a mask of his own face. According to the rumor, everyone at the party thought he was just another lame art-school bro, yet this masked Franco somehow coaxed a young woman into the master bedroom. In the middle of making love, Franco removed his James Franco mask, and, depending on whom you ask, either they both came simultaneously or she vomited all over him. I think both probably happened; Franco wields that kind of power. Rumors travel quickly and thrive in olde Savannah, so there is no telling the veracity of the story. It’s the kind of bizarre tale that art-school kids live for; however, I believe Franco spread the rumor himself.

James Franco attended the Savannah Film Festival every year that I was at SCAD. This festival attracts B-list celebrities looking for a fun paid vacation with great networking opportunities. Every year at the end of October, the Savannah Film Festival brings together disparate personalities like Ileana Douglas, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, Charlie Rose, Ellen Burstyn, and a slew of other fabulous, famous folks who were quite genial and interesting to learn from. In exchange for showing a film and doling out advice to students, celebrities enjoyed a week of delicious Southern food and nightly open-bar afterparties. Since it was Halloween week, celebrities never suspected that the anime, furry, and steampunk costumes they saw on students were actually year-round fashion statements. Franco was always there, chatting up the cute girls, enjoying the munchies in the courtesy suite, and schmoozing with publicist-buddy Bobby Zarem.

During my senior year I had the honor of interviewing celebrities on camera for the film festival, and my first guest was going to be James Franco. Years of toiling in the student newspaper, radio, and TV station had paid off: I was finally a real-ish entertainment journalist! But I woke up the first day of my final Savannah Film Festival dreadfully ill. I had just recovered from from a bout of hangover-flu, and this morning I felt like a boa constrictor had taken hold of my chest. My first interview — of course the big one with James Franco — was scheduled that afternoon. I rushed to the doc-in-a-box, shallow-breathing all the way, desperate to be well enough for the rest of the week.

By noon I had a diagnosis (bronchitis), a prescription (inhaler and antibiotics), and just enough time to make it to set at 2 p.m. — drugged up and ready to meet James Franco. My producer, a beautiful British woman who looked like a walking Marc Jacobs mannequin, gave me a quick pep talk before I got under the lights. She’d interviewed Franco the last few years, and she said, “Whatever happens, don’t take it personally.” I took a hit of my steroid inhaler and hopped on my stool under the searing lights. Our production team wanted to be immediately ready for the celebrities when they showed up, so we sat and waited, ready to roll.

After two hours dehydrating on the hot set and no sign of Franco, I was ready to take another inhaler hit. Just as I popped up to grab it from offset, Franco and his entourage rolled in, and my producer barked at me to sit down and engage with the celebrity. Franco, so casual and loose with his friends, immediately changed demeanor when he sat in the hot seat. All traces of bro left Franco, and I realized I was talking to a very intelligent artist.

Franco spoke very seriously about his intentions as an actor, writer, and filmmaker; he explained how much thought and hard work can go into even an unpopular movie (like Good Time Max, the auteur piece he was hawking at the film festival). Franco gave shout-outs to all the folks in his professional network who had helped him achieve success, and he did so without seeming condescending. Even when I threw him softball questions, he answered with a serious eloquence rarely seen outside uptight stage actors.

About 90 seconds into our interview, Franco commented on my “positive energy” and said quietly, “Just kidding. You’re great.” I could barely breathe enough to get the questions out, and my energy was more deathly uninterested than positive. As the interview rolled on, I couldn’t help but feel completely insecure sitting next to James Franco. Despite all my desires to cast him as a no-nothing Hollywood lout, he proved immediately that he was a smart, hardworking artist. It was clear that he was dedicated to his craft, and he put a lot of thought and work into projects that nobodies like me wrote off.

For 10 minutes I felt like I was drowning on camera — gasping for just one breath of fresh air in this interview — while James Franco stood just out of my reach. He was far more intelligent than I’d expected, and I saw myself as another whiny kid he had to interact with as part of his professional duties. He achieved his success by continually improving his craft, building a self brand, and doing what it takes to get the job done. James Franco understood the power that he wielded with his bro image, and I knew he very likely could have crafted the masked-Franco-tryst story as a way to instill awe amongst art students like me.

Once we wrapped the interview and cut the lights, I ran for my inhaler. My producer came up, hugged the air out of me, and said I’d gotten “the best Franco interview we’ve ever filmed.” It was the worst interview of my life, and all I could think about was going home to pass out.

I stood there, extremely grateful to puff on my prescribed drugs, and Franco came up to shake my hand and thank me. He was not only professional but polite; I noted this as the trait of a successful artist. He said I’d given a great interview, and he wished me the best after graduation.

Franco took a beat before stepping out of the studio, and I saw the face of the professional artist wash away. Bro Franco was back and ready to be unleashed into the world. Before he left, he turned back to me to ask me one question: “Where can I find some good fried chicken and pussy?”

Neither was my delicacy. I shrugged and said, “Paula Deen’s or the gas station by the housing projects.”

Either one would do.
