What to Know About The Impact of Coronavirus in New York City

As the coronavirus pandemic continues, local governments are taking drastic measures to contain the virus by having residents essentially on lockdown.
In New York City specifically — which has about 463 confirmed COVID-19 cases as of March 16 — businesses, museums, cultural institutions and schools have begun shuttering their doors at a rapid pace in accordance with new restrictions set by local officials.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced on March 12 there would be an indefinite ban on gatherings of more than 500 people, with New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio following by declaring a state of emergency in the city. As of March 15, the mayor has announced additional restrictions on public schools, restaurants and nightlife following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s new recommendation that large gatherings of more than 50 people should be canceled for the next eight weeks.

Everything We Know About The Xbox Series X

2/24 Update: Added details about ray tracing, teraflops, “Quick Resume,” and “Smart Delivery.”

[poilib element=”accentDivider”]

At The Game Awards 2019, Microsoft’s next-gen console finally earned its official name: The Xbox Series X. Initially revealed at the E3 2019 press conference as Project Scarlett, specifics about the console have been scarce. Microsoft has given us some concrete details to focus on, however, including some specs, a release window, a major launch title, and more.

Xbox Series X Price: How Much Will it Cost?

There’s been no official word from Microsoft on how much the Xbox Series X will cost. However, we estimate it could cost between $ 450-600 based on the hardware alone.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/next-gen-console-watch-the-biggest-ps5-price-factors”]

Xbox Series X Release Date: When Does it Come Out?

During Microsoft’s E3 2019 press conference, the company revealed the Xbox Series X is set to launch in Holiday 2020.

This partially lines up with previous reports that suggested “multiple pieces of hardware” would be released in 2020, and another report that specifically said Xbox’s Project Scarlett would be released by Holiday 2020.

With E3 2020 just a few months away, some are hoping that we will be given some news on the Xbox Series X release date. Earlier this year, Sony announced that it would not be attending the show, but Microsoft has confirmed that the Xbox team is “hard at work on E3” prep.

With Sony absent, Phil Spencer and his team will definitely be the main focus of the show, however, it remains to be seen if that means we hear any announcements about an Xbox Series X release date or price.

Xbox Series X Specs: What Hardware Does it Have?

As part of the initial Project Scarlett announcement video, those involved in the creation of the new console said it will be four times more powerful than the Xbox One X, which is capable of 8K output, 120 frames per second, variable refresh rates and real-time “next-gen ray tracing.”

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/02/24/xbox-series-x-has-12-teraflops-new-technical-specs-revealed-ign-news”]

Spencer later clarified that the Xbox Series X would feature DirectX raytracing, which will allow for more realistic environments, with “accurate reflections and realistic acoustics.”
A new generation SSD is being used as virtual RAM, allegedly offering over 40 times performance increases from the current generation. Xbox Series X will also leverage high-bandwidth GDDR 6 SDRAM.

AMD and Microsoft co-engineered and designed a custom processor for the Xbox Series X. This processor leverages AMD’s latest Zen 2 and Navi technology. It was clear before E3 2019 that AMD would be designing the next Xbox’s processor, as Spencer briefly discussed a partnership with AMD during a keynote address at CES 2019. Spencer teased the new Xbox Series X processor on Twitter earlier this year when he changed his profile picture to an image of the chip. The new processor, which looks very similar to that of the Xbox One X reads “8K” and “Project Scarlett.”

Xbox Series X Features

The same team that worked on the Xbox One X is working on the Xbox Series X and they are prioritizing reduced load times. Xbox head Phil Spencer is a longtime advocate for framerate over resolution, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Xbox Series X team is paying close attention to better framerates.

In February 2020, Phil Spencer posted on the Xbox blog, detailing some features coming to the Xbox Series X. A “Quick Resume” feature will allow players to load “suspended state” games almost instantly and let you quickly navigate through multiple games without having to endure enormous load times.

It was also confirmed that the Xbox Series X will have 12 teraflops of GPU power, which is four times more than the Xbox One and twice as much as the Xbox One X. For those not familiar with the term, a teraflop is a measure of how many complex calculations a machine can handle every second. Essentially, it allows for higher-quality graphical output.

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=xbox-console-power-levels-compared&captions=true”]

At EA’s Q3 2020 investors call, CFO Blake Jorgensen told investors that the power behind the new generation of consoles would “blow people’s mind.”

“The power of the new consoles is gonna be substantially greater than existing consoles,” said Jorgensen during the call. “We can do a lot more [with PS5 and Xbox Series X]. Things we’re doing will blow people’s minds.”

It sounds like Microsoft’s next-gen console is going to be pretty powerful. We actually broke down how the Xbox Series X compares to PCs.

Xbox Series X Design and Images: What Does it Look Like?

At The Game Awards 2019, we were given our first look at the Xbox Series X. Standing vertically in what looks to be a matte black finish, Microsoft’s fourth-generation console features a power button with the signature Xbox insignia at the top that lights up white when pressed on. There’s metal mesh across the top of the console that gets backlit with an Xbox green glow as well.

In an interview with GameSpot, it was confirmed the Xbox Series X will support discs and is “roughly as wide as an Xbox One controller”. Phil Spencer also told GameSpot that the Xbox Series X was “designed to be as quiet as possible”, sporting a large fan designed to push out “high volumes of air” from the top and keep the console cool.

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=xbox-series-x-reveal-images&captions=true”]

Earlier this year, images of the Xbox Series X were reportedly leaked on Twitter. At the time of writing, it’s still unclear if this is a real prototype, or simply an incredibly detailed mockup. Either way, the reported leak offers fans a potential closer look at the front and back of the console.

A lot of fans have taken note of an unknown port located between the HDMI and digital audio port on the back of the “leaked” Xbox Series X image. Microsoft insider blog Thurrott is reporting that the unknown port will be used for expandable storage. At the time of writing, the purpose of the port has not been confirmed by Microsoft.

Xbox Series X Games: What Are the Confirmed and Rumored Titles?

So far, we know of seven titles that will be making its way to the Xbox Series X, along with two unannounced AAA games. Perhaps the biggest title of them all is Halo Infinite, which is the only confirmed Xbox Series X launch title.

Confirmed Xbox Series X Games:

  • Halo Infinite
  • Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2
  • The Lord of the Rings: Gollum
  • Watch Dogs Legion
  • Rainbow Six Quarantine
  • Gods and Monsters
  • Battlefield 6
  • 2 Unannounced AAA Games

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=the-big-xbox-games-coming-in-2020&captions=true”]

Reports dating as far back as February 2019 suggested Halo Infinite would be coming to Project Scarlett as a launch title, though these reports claimed Halo Infinite would be released on Xbox One as well. On top of this, a poll from GDC 2019 revealed about 18% of developers were working on next-gen games.

During its E3 2018 press conference, Bethesda suggested its upcoming game Starfield would be coming to the next console generation, and that The Elder Scrolls VI would launch after that. However, in March 2019, Bethesda confirmed it would not be discussing Starfield or The Elder Scrolls VI at E3 2019, but with E3 2020 just around the corner, we might get some news.

Microsoft has been accumulating studios, perhaps in anticipation of the future console generation. Microsoft announced it had acquired five studios (Ninja Theory, Undead Labs, Compulsion Games, Playground Games) and founded a new Santa Monica studio during E3 2018.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/02/06/microsoft-forms-xbox-game-studios-ign-news”]

Revealed during X018, an additional two studios (Obsidian Entertainment and inXile Entertainment) joined the Xbox family. During Microsoft’s E3 2019 press conference, Double Fine Productions was officially added to that stable.

Make sure to check out our list of confirmed and rumored games for the Xbox Series X.

Xbox Series X Backwards Compatibility and Smart Delivery

Microsoft has confirmed that the Xbox Series X will support backwards compatibility with all Xbox One titles day one. Further, all of the original Xbox and Xbox 360 titles that are available on the Xbox One will also be available at launch. We estimate that there will be around 575 backwards compatible games on the Xbox Series X at launch.

Phil Spencer also said Microsoft aims to support a “Play Anywhere” scheme, wanting to provide the option for gamers to connect across devices and across platforms, suggesting potential cross-generation play.

Additionally, the Xbox Series X will feature “Smart Delivery” which will give players easy access to all digitally purchased games across all devices, meaning it doesn’t have to be purchased twice. This feature will be available for all exclusive Xbox Game Studio titles, including Halo Infinite, as well as any third-party developers that decide to opt in. Cyberpunk 2077 is one game already confirmed for smart delivery.

Project xCloud

Just before officially announcing Project Scarlett, Microsoft announced that its game streaming platform Project xCloud is coming in October 2019. Xbox head Phil Spencer also announced Console Streaming, which turns an Xbox One into a personal Xbox server for free. It’s likely this feature and Project xCloud will find its way to the Xbox Series X in the future.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/06/09/project-xcloud-xbox-one-presentation-e3-2019″]

Last year, we went hands-on with Project xCloud and found that so far, it seems like a pretty good service. Be sure to check out our Project xCloud review if you want to hear more about it.

There were some recent rumors about Project xCloud exclusive games, but Microsoft has since clarified its original comments, saying that it has “no plans for cloud-exclusive content at this time.”

Xbox Series X: What Happened to Lockhart and Anaconda?

In December 2018, reports suggested the two devices that make up Project Scarlett are referred to within Microsoft by two codenames: Lockhart and Anaconda. Again, it’s unclear if Project Scarlett still consists of multiple pieces of hardware.

These two separate Xbox SKUs would theoretically have a similar dynamic to Xbox One S and Xbox One X. Lockhart was rumored to be a more affordable, baseline model that made the technology more accessible to a larger group of consumers.

This could potentially be the streaming-centric device hinted at in earlier rumors. The report suggested Lockhart was comparable to, or just a bit more powerful than, the Xbox One X.
Anaconda, on the other hand, would be a decidedly more powerful piece of hardware that would cost more for consumers willing to shell out the money for extra horsepower. It would reportedly provide a “cutting-edge console gaming experience.” It was also suggested the Anaconda could potentially act as a dev kit.

If the rumors are to be believed, the Xbox Series X is likely the console nicknamed Anaconda, while the Lockhart console is yet to be announced by Microsoft. However, it’s currently still unclear if Microsoft will have more than one console at launch.

Xbox Series X Controller vs Xbox One Controller

The Xbox Series X controller looks very similar to that of the Xbox One and was partially inspired by the Elite Series 2 controller. Notable new features with the new Series X controller are a Share button and a hybrid d-pad similar to the Elite Series 2.

In the Xbox Series X announcement post from Microsoft, the company noted that the controllers “size and shape have been refined to accommodate an even wider range of people.”
Further, the new controller will be compatible with the Xbox One and Windows 10 PC’s and will be included with every Xbox Series X purchase.

Barneys Liquidation Sale: Everything We Know So Far

Now that the Barneys New York bankruptcy battle is finally resolved, the question on every fashion-oriented person’s mind is, when is the liquidation sale?
The retailer, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in August, finally found a new owner on Friday in the Authentic Brands Group, buying the historic New York retailer for $ 271 million. ABG has plans to keep Barneys’ Madison Avenue flagship open for the next year as an experiential pop-up store format, but bring the Barneys name over exclusively to Saks Fifth Avenue as its retail partner.
Read More: The Fashion Community Weighs in on Barneys’ Sale
With Friday’s bankruptcy deal, Barneys has already begun its sale, which ABG chairman and chief executive officer Jamie Salter called “transition sales” or “non-store-closing sales” instead of liquidation sales. However, these sales are currently a meager 5 or 10 percent off merchandise across categories — according to the Barneys web site — which, considering the steep prices of its designer offerings, doesn’t account for much savings. Social media has already shown its disappointment.

I don’t know what the increases will be over time but anything under 50% is not a sale. SFA was already at 40-50% last week for pre-sale. Barneys is selling

One Rule to Know Before You Break All the Rules

This article was originally published on riskology.co

I’ve always been an early riser, but I’m not what you would call a morning person. I like the peace and serenity that comes with a sun rise when no one else is awake. I like knowing that when I wake up, I’m guaranteed a hot shower. Lately, I’ve noticed I like getting my daily exercise done early so that it’s out of the way and I can focus on other things for the rest of the day.

Until just a few months ago, I had a day job in the construction industry. Getting up early in that line of work is a prerequisite. On my first day, I was issued an official alarm clock and coffee grinder. If you’re not an early riser, you’re going to become one.

Apparently, I missed a memo, because early mornings at the office aren’t usually spent enjoying the sunrise or improving your health. They’re spent sweating bullets trying to finish work that was neglected yesterday or put out fires that someone else started.

Not exactly my cup of tea, so to speak. I like mornings, but I like them on my own terms.

The Indoctrination

I’m sure you’ve had the misfortune at some point in life of trying to reconcile what you wanted to do with what you thought you had to do. This is exactly the situation I found myself in and it was thoroughly problematic. All these rules that someone else made and I had to follow.

When I was new, I just tried to fit in and do what everyone else was doing. “That’s just how it is,” they said. You show up at 7:00 every morning and leave at 5:00 every evening. It had to be for a reason, right? Besides, I was on an prosperous career track. If I could just get used to this schedule, spending the first hours of every day pulling my hair out in what felt like a incoherent stupor, there’d be years of financial good fortune ahead of me.

This is the part where I state loudly and quite firmly, “Wrong!”

I was fresh to the professional world and wet behind the ears, but it didn’t take too long to figure out why we had this 7:00 to 5:00 rule. Of course, I’ve always been aware that most companies keep set working hours, I just wasn’t always sure why.

Turns out, they had a pretty good reason. Know what it is?

Most employees (in any industry) are completely mediocre and mediocre employees demand (yes, demand!) rules that tell them how to behave.

Setting a schedule that says you show up at 7:00 and leave at 5:00 is an easy way to ensure that average people are at work for an average of 10 hours a day and, if the averages play out, a few of them are productive.

Now, I enjoy sitting around and being unproductive just as much as the next guy, but its not a hobby I care for at work. I like to reserve that kind of activity for weekends and downtime after I feel like I’ve really accomplished something.

At the same time, though, who can kick ass for 10 straight hours? I’m trying, you know, but my bionic brain is still on back order. I felt forced into a position where I either had to completely drain myself every day or adopt this law of averages that just felt wrong.

There’s good news, though. If this is how you feel too, and you’re willing to work a little smarter, you can start making your own rules about your schedule, or about anything at work or in life for that matter.

A Little “Experiment” With Rules

When I realized what kind of system I was in, I knew right away that I wanted out, but I liked my paycheck and I wasn’t really interested in trying to change an entire corporation’s policy.

I’d gotten a lot of praise for the work I’d been doing and it seemed like everyone was really happy with my results, so I decided to do a little test — I quit showing up at 7:00. Yep. I just quit going to work on time. I didn’t do it all at once, and I didn’t just start showing up after lunch, but slowly and surely I started coming to work later and later and doing it more frequently.

And you know what happened? Absolutely nothing! No one even noticed.

You can probably do it too (even though I can hear you saying in your head that it would never work at your job).

Sure, there are some jobs where this kind of stunt won’t work. If you work on an assembly line and all the pieces pile up at your station and break the machine because you’re not there on time, you’re probably out of luck.

But there are far more jobs where it will work. If you’re reading this article between the hours of 7:00 am and 5:00 pm at your desk, then yes, I believe you can do it.

The Secret Formula for Changing the Rules

There’s a catch, though. Are you surprised? There always is, isn’t there?

Remember what I said about average employees needing rules to tell them how to behave? You can’t be one of those average employees and expect to pull this off.

Thankfully, it really doesn’t take much to excel above “average.” If you can grasp this concept (it’s the most important one there is to beating “average”) then you’re well on your way to a much happier workplace:

Success is measured in output of value, not input of effort.

A lot of people think that if they put in the hours, they’ll be noticed and recognized for their effort. It isn’t true. Unfortunately, no one cares how long it took you to complete a job or finish a proposal, or do anything else, really. What they care about is that it got done, it worked, and it worked well.

In fact, the only time anyone is going to care how long it took to do something is when it took too long. And that’s not something you want to be recognized for.

Once you have a real understanding of this concept, you can start using simple productivity tricks to abandon the standard corporate work formula that looks something like this:

(1 hr. of half ass work) + (1 hr. of surfing the net) + (30 min. of frantic work to meet a deadline) = 1 happy boss/customer/client

and substitute it for a much nicer formula that looks like this:

(1 hr. of focused productivity) = 1 really, really happy boss/customer/client

Get it done. Make it work. Make it work well. Consistently nail those 3 things, and you can start changing any rules you want to.

Action is a Revolutionary Act

It’s pretty easy to see how fast you can get ahead when you embrace the reality that people appreciate effort, but they expect results. The funny thing is that this is not a revolutionary concept. When you read it, your first reaction was probably, “Duh!” This is something that everyone, on some level, understands.

But actually implementing it is a revolutionary act. There’s a huge disconnect between those that understand the concept of results over effort and those that actually live by it.

It isn’t easy to do. Most people have been trained their whole lives to do exactly the opposite. They’re even programmed to try to put a stop to it when you decide to do it. But resisting the urge to fit in is exactly what makes you stand out.

If you want to change the rules in another man’s game, you must make yourself an indispensable asset to him. Once you accomplish that, you’re free to make the rules as you see fit and what seems like dangerous behavior to many is, in fact, more empowering to you.

The real danger in this idea comes once you realize you’re tired of playing another’s game. Not a danger to you, but a danger to them. But that’s an article for another day.

Now, over to you. What are your tactics for changing the rules in someone else’s game?

A Simple Way To Know When It’s OK To Ask A Woman If She’s Pregnant

Mom Carrie Saum was fed up with people assuming her “squishy” belly was a “baby bump,” so she made a helpful video and flowchart to let people know when it’s OK to ask a woman if she’s pregnant.

According to Saum, there are only two scenarios when it’s appropriate: If she tells you she’s pregnant and you respond, “Really? What? You’re pregnant?” or if you’re in the room where she is giving birth and see the baby crowning or witness the C-section taking place.

“The bottom line here is that women’s bodies are not your business,” the mom explains, adding, “If a woman wants you to know, she’ll tell you.”

4 Fashion Tips Women With a DD Cup and Over Need to Know

Women with large breasts have likely encountered a fashion situation, where a gorgeous something just doesn’t work with their curves. Just like different types of boobs require different bras, a large chest can require special clothes. It’s something the fashion industry knows, and brands are responding; New York City-based Reformation isn’t just sizing up but also crafting pieces especially for busty babes.

“People don’t always think about the simple function that clothes have to perform on someone with a larger bust,” Reformation founder and CEO Yael Aflalo told Glamour. “In reality, a lot of times the dress needs to be fully redesigned, bringing the neckline up or down to accommodate larger cup sizes, thicker straps, and so on.”

Shop thick fabrics.
Your bra isn’t the only part of your outfit offering support. While underpinnings are vital, the garment itself can offer more holding power if it’s made out of a thicker material. Look for fabrics with some heft, like denim, brocade, and heavier-weight linen-cotton blends.

Look for wide straps.
Speaking of your bra, unless you’re in an intricately constructed garment with an interior corset, you really need to wear one (skipping is easier for women with A and B cups). As Aflalo pointed out, many designers simply size up their flimsy sundresses and tanks, keeping the skinny straps of the original. Smart design means widening the straps too so that you’re able to keep a bra out of sight.

Consider interesting necklines.
Large-chested women aren’t doomed to boring straight cuts that hit at the middle of the chest. “Interesting necklines look good on every body type,” Aflalo said. “They elongate the torso and draw the eyes upward.” Whether sexy laces, V-necks, or a dipping sweetheart, there are plenty of unique necklines that also allow for a bra.

Tailor things.
“Half the time it’s about having a good tailor on-hand,” Aflalo admitted. The custom look of having your pieces, expensive or not, fitted to your body is always important, but the magic can be especially potent if you’re busty.

7 Things I Want My Son to Know About Leadership

Standing in a crowded gym I watched as my teenage son and several of his friends took to the basketball court. He’s been playing sports since he was four years old and in many ways is a natural athlete when it’s channeled and honed by the great coaches he’s had. In prior seasons it’s taken him a good five minutes or so of play to warm up and adjust to being watched by a crowd of people. This year though, as one of only two eighth-graders on the varsity team, there’s no time for warming up. From tip off to the final buzzer he’s pretty much in, unless he gets fouled out. He’s pretty aggressive. I don’t mind that because I think it will serve him well someday. But this year I’ve witnessed a change.

The shy kid who was reluctant to take a shot is not only hitting occasional three pointers but his shoulders have changed. He stands solid, he’s encouraging his teammates, and he’s taking more control. It’s a metamorphosis on the hardwood. I’m witnessing the former shy kid show confidence and leadership. I’m amazed and proud. As he moves beyond middle school, I’m sure I’ll be in awe of plenty of other changes. Meanwhile, I hope I can look back and see that I’ve taught him these seven things, I believe every leader should know.

Leaders are proud of their roots. Never, ever be ashamed of your family, your faith, your friends, or your job. Where you come from is ok, and where others come from is okay. In fact it’s better than okay. The road to the person we become is paved by all those things. Besides, I once heard “my home may be someone else’s dream home, my car someone else’s dream car, my job someone else’s dream job.” Be proud, just don’t be prideful. The most shameful thing you can do is treat others less than yourself. Rather than chasing acceptance or approval from others, pursue your purpose and help show others theirs.

Leaders Communicate. Be confident and comfortable looking others in the eye. Soak up information and know your stuff. Knowing how to share your knowledge effectively is a skill. Be humble and bear in mind that no one likes a know-it-all. Know when to step up to the plate. Know when to step back. Don’t be a fake flatterer or tell people things just to tickle their egos. The most valued people are those who can keep confidence and who also speak truth out of genuine concern. Become to the go-to person who will shoot straight with people. You don’t always have to speak first. Sometimes it’s best to be last. Be kind, fair, and judicious in all you say, and above all remember this: Sometimes the most powerful or effective thing you can say is nothing at all.

Leaders Show Respect. You might feel that others need to earn your respect, but a leader shows respect in everything, every day. Respect property. Respect laws. Respect tradition but also respect dreams, innovation, and new ideas. Respect our leaders. Respect our country. Respect the process, and those who fight to preserve our freedoms. Respect the one you love in public and in private, and finally, for the sake of your integrity have a strong sense of self-respect.

Leaders Show Strength. Many people have ideas about what it means to be strong. Real strength is shown in how you react to life’s circumstances, surprises, and failures. Our strength is proven through our determination. Be relentless in pursuing your dreams, but remember “a dream is just a wish without a plan.” Strong people make plans, and strong people can accept when plans need to change. The key is just to have a plan. Have the guts to stand up for what’s right. For example, silence when someone is bullied or mistreated is a sign of weakness and being a bully just makes you a jerk or worse. Be resilient, be driven and own up to your mistakes. That is strength.

A Leader is Someone You can Count On. Unless there’s an emergency (a real one), if you say you’ll do something, do it. Be where you said you’ll be, do what you said you’d do, and in the rare event you can’t meet your obligation ask forgiveness, and make it right.

Leaders Are Human and It’s Okay to Show it. Part of the problem in our broken world is that too many people are afraid to express love or emotions because of poor examples or negative life experiences. Don’t shy away from emotion. Don’t ever let anyone tell you it’s not ok to “feel” something. Show affection when it’s appropriate. And hey, it’s okay to shed a tear over things that matter, just don’t be a crybaby or whiner when things don’t go your way. There’s a difference. One way to show your humanity is by serving others. Remember that it’s difficult to feed hate when we’re feeding others together and it’s hard to tear people down when we’re building something together. Show you care, and if you really care, you’ll act on it.

Leaders Solve Problems. Be a problem solver. There’s a big difference between “problems” and “situations.” No matter how big or small the problem is, if you don’t like something or you see an injustice, then commence to changing it. There’s almost always more than one way to solve a problem. Remember not every problem can be solved overnight, but you have to start somewhere.

What Every Woman Should Know About Looking Better in Clothes

“Your sleeve is a 26,” Zac Posen tells me as he prods at the arm of my blazer. “Actually, 25 3/4.”

We’re perched in a back corner of his atelier for a photo-shoot fitting. Together we’ve decided that I’ll wear a shapely skirt suit, and though it’s my size—a 12—it does not fit. The skirt is so tight it won’t zip up. The jacket fits in the shoulders but drowns out my waist. And the mermaid shape is so snug I can’t walk at all. As you can imagine, I’m embarrassed—and briefly consider running for the door.

Lauren-Chan-Zac-Posen

But Posen is unfazed. In fact, he’s already remeasuring so he can tell where to pin, let out, and take in the garments. “Alterations,” he tells me, “are the game changer when it comes to the perfect fit.” And once he’s done, voila: The skirt zips, the jacket accommodates, and I can move. “The right tailoring can make any garment work for any body,” says Posen. “And it can make you feel confident—especially when, these days, a lot of clothing is two-dimensional, but in real life every body is different, and women have curves.”

As a size 12, those words hit home for me. I often feel left out by fashion: In a standard size range, a 12 is regularly too tight; in a plus-size range, even the smallest 14 is too wide. I’ve learned to shop around this conundrum, but I’m still left standing in a fitting room feeling defeated more than I’d like to admit. And I’m not alone. Women of many body types struggle to fit properly into clothing—so let’s do something about it! Isn’t it time we stop trying to fit into our clothes and have our clothes fit us instead? Here are a few suggestions on how to start:

Step One: Ignore Your Size
That’s right—ignore. Sizes vary between countries, companies, and even articles of clothing. The U.S. government has been attempting to fix this problem via regulation since the 1940s, but instead, the situation has actually gotten worse, with the arrival of vanity sizing—in which bigger garments are tagged with smaller numbers to entice customers (that’s why the 00 now exists). “The mentality that the lowest size is best needs to go out the window,” says plus-size model and fashion designer Candice Huffine. “It’s just a number that somebody made up”

Her advice? “Try on several sizes, bigger and smaller,” she says. “Some people have tag phobia: They don’t want to buy a bigger size because of the number on the label. If you care about that, cut the tags out when you get home!”

Step Two: Shop for Your Biggest Part
It’s an easy truth that changes everything: Buy an item to fit the widest part of your body and take the rest of the garment in. That means no more jackets that gape open and muffin-top-inducing jeans. (Amen!)

“I’m a fan of blazers,” says Huffine. “But when I find one that fits through my shoulders and bust, the waist is often too big. I buy for my broadest part, then create an hourglass by taking in the midsection.”

So what does this mean for your shape? If you’re pear-shaped, buy to fit your bottom and take in elsewhere. “I have a small waist and bigger hips,” says celebrity stylist Sara Paulsen, who’s worked with Mindy Kaling. “I often wear A-line and flounce-hem skirts, which balance my proportions. I buy to fit my hip, then take the waist in—I sometimes even nip a fitted skirt right under the butt to create a flattering curve.”

If you’re muscular, the widest part of your body may be your shoulders and biceps. “I tend to have to fit my arms in jackets and take the body in,” says Hannah Bronfman, the founder of fitness site HBfit.com. “I always buy a size larger and make adjustments.”

Height can also make it more difficult to wear off-the-rack clothing. “It’s really hard for short girls to wear midi skirts,” says celebrity stylist Kate Young—whose clients include Selena Gomez and Natalie Portman. “They make you look shorter. Either go maxi—to the floor—or have the hem taken up above the knee.”

Tall women face the opposite dilemma. “Finding clothes that really fit my body has been a lifelong struggle,” says cover girl and denim designer Karlie Kloss. “Growing up, I found that if pants were long enough, they were much too big; if they fit in the waist, they were way too short.” If that sounds like you, buy a length that fits and have a tailor adjust the waist—or look to the solution Kloss herself invented, a Frame Denim line with 40-inch inseams. (Hudson Jeans and the Gap also offer extended lengths.)

Runway-for-bodies

Step Three: Master E-Shopping
When shopping online, it helps to know your bust, waist, and hip measurements; most sites translate their sizes into those numbers. Also, consider brands that take fit into account: Rent the Runway shares photos of customers in each item (with their honest reviews), so you can see how a piece works on a variety of shapes and sizes. There are also companies that help with fitting woes; True Fit, for example, works with brands like Jason Wu and Marc Jacobs to generate suggestions based on your sizes, previous purchases, and its own e-commerce database.

Step Four: Make Your Alterations
The next step is the all-important nipping and tucking. Find a good tailor by asking a trusted boutique, department store, or dry cleaner in your area for a recommendation. If you’re technologically inclined, try in-home tailoring services like Mend and zTailors. Here are a few things a tailor will be able to do to your garments:

  • Create your shape and size. Generally, you can hem or take a seam in as much as four inches; any more will throw the look of the garment off. And ask your tailor to follow the lines of your body. “If you’re working with a dress or jacket, fit the shape of your back,” says Posen. “It’s curved, not a straight line!”
  • Make more room. “People tend to think that you can only make stuff smaller, but you can make things a little bigger too,” says Young. “If a dress is hugging a bit, you can often find some room in the zipper or the side seam to let out.” You can also cut a slit or vent in a dress.
  • Find the right length. “With skinny pants, you can wear any heel height, since the hem should grace the top of the shoe,” says Young. For wide-leg pants, which should hit the floor, “buy two pairs and have one altered to wear with flats and one to wear with heels.” If you buy only one, hem it to work with the heel height you wear most often.
  • Streamline your silhouette. A tailor can close up pockets in a pair of pants,
  • add hook-and-eye closures between gaping buttons on a shirt, or create darts under the bust or in the back of a top to create cleaner lines. If you always tuck in shirts, remove the bottom few buttons so they don’t show under clothes.

Step Five: Consider Custom-Made
Still unsatisfied? Look into made-to- measure clothing, either from a tailor or via sites like eShakti and small boutiques on Etsy. It can be expensive (shirts start at around $ 100, and a full suit can run upwards of $ 1,500) but worth it, at least for frequently worn items. “Custom-made clothing is economical,” argues Posen. “If you take good care of them, your garments can last for a long time.”

Huffine’s made-to-measure must is a cocktail dress—like the Sophie Theal- let she wore to this year’s Pirelli calendar launch. “I needed to wear a bra and I wanted to wear Spanx, so she designed around that,” she says. “In the end, the gown was something I knew I would be comfortable and feel like myself in.”

And that, of course, is the point. The outfit I reach for when I want to feel like my best self? You guessed it: Posen’s expertly tailored skirt suit. With it on, I stand taller, smile bigger, and behave more confidently. “We need to stop letting fashion make us uncomfortable,” says Huffine. “When something is tailored to fit you perfectly, it takes all worry away. Your garment isn’t fighting against you—it’s working with you.”

So the next time you’re standing in the fitting room, remember: It’s not you that needs to be altered. It’s your clothes.

Here’s All You Need to Know About the Candidates in Thursday’s GOP Debate

Ten of the Republican Party candidates for president will participate in the first debate of the 2016 Presidential Campaign on Thursday in Cleveland, Ohio.

Fox News, the official network of the GOP, has announced the names of nine of the candidates in the debate. The tenth will either be Ohio Gov. John Kasich or former Texas Gov. Rick Perry. What is it going to be, Fox, beets or liverwurst?

The GOP’s remaining candidates will sit on folding chairs at the back of the auditorium, with forlorn looks on their faces, wondering why they’re not one of the popular kids.

And we’re left to wonder: Why is there a debate in August 2015 for an election that’s 15 months way?

With so many candidates, where can you find the distinctive qualities of each one in a way that gives them the seriousness they deserve?

Right here:

Donald Trump said he would tab Sarah Palin for a top cabinet post if he was elected president. In response, Trump’s candidacy was immediately endorsed by the nation’s comedians, comedy writers, and editorial cartoonists.

Ben Carson said he doesn’t “really want to run” for president. We really don’t want you to run for president either.

Rand Paul said he supported his family’s opposition to the 1964 Civil Rights Act because it meant — and this was his quote — people couldn’t “have cigar bars anymore.” He really said that.

Rick Perry called the murders of nine blacks inside a Charleston, S.C., church an “accident.” This was a massacre. Perry is an accident.

Mike Huckabee does not accept evolution as a science. This is not surprising for someone who has spent so many years in GOP politics.

Mike Huckabee says that rapes, though “horrible tragedies,” have produced admirable human beings. He calls this “compassionate conservatism.”

Chris Christie puts the bully in bully pulpit.

Ted Cruz was not born in the United States. How can he run for president? Has anyone seen his birth certificate? What’s he hiding? He must be Kenyan and a Muslim. And a Socialist. And maybe even a Kardashian.

Marco Rubio gave up a promising career as a ventriloquist after learning while making a nationally televised speech that he could not talk and drink water at the same time.

Donald Trump says that global warming is real, but that it’s untouched by human hands. Like his hair.

As governor of Florida, Jeb Bush reportedly invested $ 1 million in state pension money to fund pornography films. Bush defended himself by saying he wanted to see people do to each other what his family has been doing to the American people for generations.

Rick Perry started wearing glasses to look smart. It hasn’t worked. He just looks like Rick Perry wearing glasses.

Jeb Bush told Fox News that, given the information he now has, he would have supported the invasion of Iraq. This means that George W. isn’t the dumbest Bush, and Rick Perry isn’t the dumbest person running for president.

Scott Walker is the only college dropout among the GOP candidates for president. Rick Perry and Mike Huckabee all graduated from college. How hard can it be?

John Kasich and Scott Walker hope to get elected president by attacking teachers. Why not? It worked so well in China, Iran, and Afghanistan.

I Know This Much: From Soho to Spandau

I Know This Much: From Soho to Spandau

I Know This Much – by Gary Kemp, Spandau Ballet’s prime mover – is simply the freshest, most exciting and best-written memoir to arrive for years. Gary’s story begins in North London, where the Kemp family rented a home with no bathrooms and chickens in the yard. After a couple of failed attempts to kill his brother Martin, his parents gave him a guitar for Christmas. From schoolyard battles between the Bowie Boys and the Prog Rockers to Mrs Kemp’s firm insistence on net curtains, from acting for the Children’s Film Foundation to manning a fruit and veg stall on Saturdays, Gary brilliantly evokes an upbringing full of love, creativity and optimism. As the Thatcher years begin, Gary’s account of the outrageous London club scene centred around the Blitz and Billy’s is just sizzling. Out of this glamorous mayhem of kilt-wearing mascara’d peacocks would emerge Spandau Ballet – the band that would define the era, and hold high the victorious standard of the New Romantics. Gary’s thrilling journey with Spandau Ballet would see them record worldwide hits such as True, Gold and Through the Barricades, play the biggest stadiums in the world, and take to the stage in togas when their luggage gets lost in flight. Stallions, supermodels and dwarves would be hired for video shoots, and through it all, Gary records the wonderful friendships, and the slowly-building tensions that would eventually see five old friends facing each other in court. I Know This Much tells the story of Spandau Ballet, but it’s far more than a book about being in a band. Whether it’s meeting Ronnie Kray before filming The Krays, sketching out the fashions and subcultures of the day, or hanging out with Princess Diana, this book offers a story on every page. And all the more so because it’s all written – brilliantly – by Gary himself.

Dear Future Husband (Assuming You Exist): 16 Things You Need To Know

Originally published on Unwritten by Mallory Arnold.

If you know me like I imagine you one day will, you know that I’ll start this letter off awkwardly.

Um, hey.

A future husband is like some mythical creature… like the Lochness Monster or Bigfoot.

I know, I just compared you to Bigfoot — but I swear it gets better. Keep reading.

Point being, when we were little, creatures like unicorns and elves sounded amazing and we couldn’t wait to find one someday. Sadly, as we grew older, it seemed like it was less and less likely that we’d see anything of the sort. The closest that we’d get was the leprechaun on a Lucky Charms box, and don’t even get me started on the disappointment Santa Claus caused. Likewise, a husband – a future soul mate – seems too fantastical nowadays to be real. We once dreamed about a prince charming, and nowadays we’re accepting we might just have to crawl out of that tower and find him ourselves.

But I know you’re out there. Maybe you’re going through the same things I am. Are you working at some summer job you hate but secretly like? Do you feel that pit of anxious excitement about a future career? Or maybe not. Maybe you’re actually a professional bullfighter/puppy rescuer and we’re not doing anything similar right now – who knows.

Here are just a few things I’d like to tell you while you’re somewhere out there.

Be safe while driving. I’m assuming you’re jamming out to something on the radio — whether it be country, rock, classic, or rap (please don’t be screamo), don’t get wrapped up in scrolling through songs. If your good buddy Jim from the office (rodeo?) texts you, let him wait until you’re parked. It would be a shame if something happened to you before we could even meet. Be safe.

Collect extra T-shirts and hoodies. Just warning you ahead of time, because I’m a T-shirt bandit. Might as well be prepared.

We’re getting a dog. If you’re not a dog person, I’d suggest starting to become one, because dogs are life. If you already love canines, be ready to brainstorm names. Because our dog’s about to be awesome.

Don’t give up — ever. These are the days where life starts to get serious and sometimes when you fall, no one is there to pick you back up. I wish I could reach a hand out, but since I can’t, I want you to keep going. Never stop doing something you’re passionate about.

I can make a pretty mean bowl of spaghetti. Just thought you should know.

If you’re thinking about getting a tattoo… You get drunk when you’re out with your buddies, and now you’re romping around town with that swagger you have. Suddenly a batman tattoo stamped across your face seems like a pretty good idea, right? Please, think twice. I beg of you.

I’ve been hurt. I’m sorry to say, but you may be receiving me bruised and a little bent. While you were not present in my life, boys have wandered here and there. Some good, some bad. The bad ones I will gladly hand over their names so you may threaten to kick their butts.

I’m bad at taking compliments. More than likely, when you compliment me, I’ll respond with a frown or a gentle punch in the arm. Please don’t be discouraged, I’ll get better at it, I promise. Just don’t be surprised if I fall out of my chair or something.

I don’t like beer. So that beer in the fridge? Don’t worry about it disappearing. All yours.

I’m rooting for you. When it seems like everyone’s turned their backs against you, just know somewhere I’m out there cheering you on.

I’m horrible at making decisions. Ask me where I want to go for dinner? I won’t know. Ask me what movie I want to see? I can’t decide. I panic. A lot.

Spend good time with your family. They’re always gonna be your best friends no matter what, and I like them already.

Accept my arm wrestling challenges. I may lose every time, but never deny me the chance to try. And don’t let me win. I got this.

Prepare to own every Disney movie ever made. Preferably on VCR, if possible.

No, please don’t ask to see old pictures of me in braces. I know you love me now and all that jazz…but you don’t wanna know.

I can’t be more excited to fall in love with you.

To all the girls out there wondering if there is ever going to be someone for them — we can’t give up. It’s easy to say “Forever alone” and put yourself down all the time. But if you put yourself out there and do something you’re passionate about, you’ll find him. If you give up now, you’re letting him down. If you give up and wait in your tower, you’ll never get the list he’s writing you.

So right now, future husband, I guess you’re a mystery like Bigfoot or those darned unicorns we just can’t seem to track down.

But I know one day when we finally meet, you’ll be my best friend. And I can’t wait.

How Do You Know When a Beauty Product Is ‘the One’?

By Jean Godfrey June

Both the dazzling appeal and the sinking horror of being a beauty editor is that a flood of shiny new products wash over your desk each day, free of charge. Your job is to try and try and try them — forever in search of something better. Even if you start to fall for something, fidelity is a sort of death, in terms of constantly coming up with new things to recommend to your readers. But in spite of it all, you still somehow manage to find the Infallible, the Kryptonite, the Desert-Island-Can’t-Live-Without, the One, the Undying.

Related: 25 Famous Women on the Best Advice They’ve Ever Given — or Received

Many of the items in my makeup bag have been there, faithfully replenished, for at least a decade: Secret Weapon hair cream from John Frieda, Secret Concealer from Laura Mercier (I know, so many secrets), Extra SPF 25 Tinted Balm from Bobbi Brown, YSL’s Volupté Sheer Candy Glossy Balm (the name has lengthened over the years, but the gorgeousness has in no way abated), Skin Food by Weleda.

How did they get to (and maintain) their Significant Other status?

As in love, there’s the slow-burn route: In the dead-middle-utter-misery of the last recession, I heard about this shampoo called Russian Amber from Philip B. It came in a tub and smelled like fantastic, exotic honey mixed with an oud-inflected perfume … and it cost $ 140. I didn’t even bother trying it — I figured the only people even remotely pleased to hear about such a thing were the mostly male-patterned-bald bankers who’d just plunged the world into economic disaster and gotten away with it; even if some of them did have hair, I was in no mood to make a single one of them happy.

But my friend with flat, unvolumizable hair started exclaiming over it, exclaiming and exclaiming and exclaiming anew. Then another friend with overcolored, slightly frizzy hair started raving, too — her daughter chimed in: “Mommy’s hair is finally smooth and pretty.” My hair is sort of normal, but I had to try it. And: It made my hair — better. A touch of volume, a touch of smoothness, some shine … However ineffable its effects, I’d be standing in the shower and I’d think, Well, do I NEED to look especially good today? If the answer was yes, I went with the Russian Amber.

This is how you know. If you have to have it on the day you need to look better than you do on all the other days (and are willing to fork over the billions it costs) it’s the One, for sure.

Desperation, then, is the ultimate test. If I must have fantastic skin on a particular morning, I put Prevage Night from Elizabeth Arden on the night before; I only use it rarely, lest the magical effect (glowier, smoother, mystically dewy-fresh skin, reportedly powered by proprietary antioxidants in the formula) fade. Not that I haven’t tried every supposed skin miracle that’s come along; it’s just the Prevage — also in Philip B price territory, at $ 136, though you go through it less quickly — is always better.

I also believe in love at first sight. The minute I applied the YSL Sheer Candy in Pomegranate — it looks like a chic French lipstick in the vein of Catherine Deneuve, but is inexplicably both transparent and intensely pigmented so it brightens anyone’s entire face, without looking like … lipstick — I knew it was a forever thing. Every so often I force myself to try something that vaguely resembles it, and it’s never as good.

And sometimes the romance is based on the irrefutable evidence that it’s just plain good for you: Even though I have breakout-prone skin, I threw some serious fuel on the face-oil fire in its early days. The Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil convinced me that oils could actually benefit the greasy-complected; I tried every oil I could find, when one day I happened upon Intelligent Nutrients (the all-organic line from Aveda-founder Horst Rechelbacher) Oil Serum. Not only did it make my skin look and feel better, I somehow developed the practice of dabbing a bit of it on over my makeup whenever I looked tired before going out, instead of adding more makeup. I liked it, but it was only when I gave some to a friend recovering from a botched Mohs surgery on her face — she’d been told there was no way she’d escape a major scar — and it utterly obliterated any sign of surgery whatsoever that I fell fully and irreparably in love. Since then, the world has embraced the face oil, but still, there is only one for me.

Once you find it — after swiping your way through the beauty aisles, experimenting furiously, staying open, and perhaps risking your rent check for it — true love is the greatest. It’s that confidence-a-bottle you’ve been searching for, that dream you thought never really existed.

So, can you live without it? It’s not the One. Keep looking.

You Know That Waxy Turquoise And Purple Cup That’s So ’90s? Meet Its Genius Designer

You may not know its name, but we know you’ve seen the classic squiggly design that’s most recognizable from paper cups.

Yeah, you know what we’re talking about — that purple and turquoise pattern that hits you with giant pangs of nostalgia. The “Jazz” design began showing up on paper cups about 23 years ago. Recently, an AMA request came in from a Reddit user who wanted to know who the designer was. That pushed reporter Thomas Gounley of Missouri’s Springfield News-Leader to do some digging.

The iconic design.

After much investigation, Gounley was successful and last week he discovered that 50-year-old Gina Ekiss, who lives in Aurora, Mississippi, is the iconic design’s creator, according to his piece in the News-Leader. Ekiss, who’s now a custom frame shop manager at a Hobby Lobby, was met with Internet acclaim as the discovery spread across social media outlets.

“I’m just still pretty stunned about the whole deal,” Ekiss told ABC News in reaction to her Internet stardom. “I’m thrilled that it’s still popular.”

http://solojazz.tumblr.com/post/121874087614/meet-gina-the-designer-of-the-solo-jazz-cup

The path to finding Ekiss wasn’t an easy one. The reporter only knew the designer’s first name as well as the fact that she had worked for the Sweetheart Cup Company, which was later bought by Solo Cup Company. He eventually found a tweet from a person claiming to be the creator’s daughter, according to his article. After looking through public records and coming across Ekiss’ name and address, Gounley drove to her house and confirmed his suspicions.

Turns out, Ekiss had created Jazz as part of an internal cup design contest at the Sweetheart Cup Company in 1989, after outside design firms had came up with unsatisfying results. Ekiss said that Jazz was among three or four different designs she had submitted, and its colors are just ones she felt meshed well.

“I just did turquoise, or teal, because that’s one of my favorite colors,” she told ABC News. “I wanted another overlapping color that would work well together. I just liked the purple with it and everybody seemed pleased with that.”

The 50-year-old still keeps a few products with the Jazz design in her house, and says it’s “insane” that her artwork has become such a memorable part of ’90s culture.

Phew! We can all breathe easy now that this pressing mystery’s finally been solved.

What the Dying Want You to Know About Life

It was a rainy December day when I knocked on Melissa and Bradley’s* door for the first time. I was pregnant, cold, wet and without an umbrella; it rarely rains here. Melissa answered the door, quiet, sullen, with dark bags under her eyes, and probably (definitely) anemic. She devoted all of her time to taking care of Bradley, at her expense. Since his ALS diagnosis, Bradley had become steadily weaker, less capable. Refusing a voice-assistive device, he had been reduced to grunts and nods, a barely effective means of communication. He had been robbed of ability to stand, walk or to use his limbs at all.

Melissa embraced me in the doorway, the desperate grip of someone who had lost hope. She had never seen me. No matter.

Hospice does that to people. It makes strangers family.

Melissa took my saturated sweater, saying, “I don’t see your wings, but I know they are there. You are surely an angel.” She invited me in, offered me a cookie and showed me a seat.

That day stands out, maybe because Bradley and Melissa are so much like me and my husband. Maybe because I saw my own sullen face in hers. Maybe because of the profound fear that I felt; the fear of losing someone you love so deeply, so deeply that the world couldn’t possibly continue to move around the sun without them.

When you tell people you’re a hospice nurse, the default comment is always, “Oh I could never do that. I would cry all the time.” In truth, those who work in hospice do cry, not every day, but certainly enough. Still, despite the tears shed, there is a real privilege in being at the bedside of the dying. I’ve traded my stethoscope in (at least temporarily) for a laptop. But my hospice experiences are indelibly etched, and what I learned from the dying is important.

And worth sharing.

Don’t sweat the small stuff (it’s all small stuff). At the end of your life, everything that’s not vitally important — oh, let’s say, whether or not your pants are too tight — suddenly seems really unimportant. Ask yourself if what worries you will still worry you in 10 or 20 or 50 years. Answer honestly.

Don’t ignore pains, aches or symptoms of disease. Especially those involving the breast, testicles, bowels or skin. This isn’t particularly deep or moving. But it’s important. These things sneak up on you. Many people wish they had faced their fear, seen the doctor earlier and gotten treatment earlier.

Money is an illusion. You think you need so much. In the end, you don’t really need any of it. Prioritize people and experiences over possession.

The key to a long life? There isn’t one. But a 105-year-old woman told me she lived to be that old because she, “didn’t take no shit from no one.” The same woman told me that the one piece of advice she’d give any woman is this: “A woman can do any damn thing a man can do. You don’t need no man for nothing.” From the mouths of the incredibly old. Sage wisdom.

Your body is just a vessel for your soul. Quit looking in the mirror. Quit obsessing over your wrinkles, your ass, your dress size. Quit worrying about your hair, makeup, saggy breasts, varicose veins, stretch marks or that mole on your chin (unless it might be cancerous). Quit thinking about any of that shit. It all fades anyway, one way or another.

Repair what’s broken. Above all else, at the end of their life, the one regret that every person shares is broken relationships. Whether it’s with your parents, your children or your siblings, if it can be repaired, repair it. Don’t do it to your detriment, but if it can be done, do it. At the end, love is everything.

In hospice there are a lot of tears, and a lot to learn.

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About the Amazing ‘90s Costumes in Dope

dope-1

As we’ve learned from films like Sex and the City, The Great Gastby, and An Education, the costumes in some movies can often make as big of an impact as the performances (or the plot!).

Dope, the Sundance breakout hit about ’90s-obsessed kids who live in Inglewood, California and get caught up in a drug deal gone bad, is no exception. High-waist jeans, bamboo earrings, boxer shorts exposed Marky-Mark style, and tons of plaid shirts pepper the present day-set film. So, yes, while we cannot wait to see the stars of Dope—Shameik Moore, Kiersey Clemons, and Tony Revolori—make their movie debuts, we’ll admit the costumes have us equally excited. Here are fun facts to know about the movie’s seriously buzzed-about outfits.

Patrik Milani is the person behind Dope‘s costumes: The Italian costume designer is relatively new to the movie game, though, having only worked on four films prior to this.

Milani found his inspiration on social media: He told The Fader, “The main research I did was going to Instagram and looking under #Inglewood, #InglewoodHigh, and #InglewoodProm. I got into all of these peoples’ accounts and started following real kids who were students. Obviously I would pick the people who were more fashionable. That was a lot of really good research. I’m almost 45, what am I going to do? Hang out at high schools? I printed everything and showed it to the director and he was like, “Oh my god.”

Major players in ’90s hip-hop culture also served as inspiration: “Aaliyah was a big point of reference for Diggy,” Milani shared with I-D. “I wanted to help draw out her feminine side in a way that felt authentic for the character. At first, I was thinking more along the lines of Missy Elliott, but I wanted to create a more feminine silhouette. Aaliyah was so sexy even though she wore baggier men’s clothes, so Diggy stemmed from there. I also looked a lot at NWA for Tony [Revolori]’s character, Jib.”

Many of the pieces were actually sourced on eBay: In an interview with The Examiner he said, “Vintage stuff is so rare, that I found myself up late at night bidding on auctions on eBay—just to find the right pieces for the film.” Milani also hit up local West Coast shops. He shared with Refinery 29, “There’s a store in Sun Valley where I got a poncho for one of the characters for $ 3. I mean, $ 3 in Sun Valley! I think if you have a good eye, you don’t have to spend a lot of money.”

Pharrell also played an influential part in creating the costumes: As the executive producer the CFDA Fashion Icon helped take the costumes to the next level through his connections. “I only met Pharrell once, but I was dealing with his producer, Mimi Valdes,” Milani told Complex. “When she came on, she said my friend has this website Karmaloop, you can order anything you want. Since this is an independent movie, that really opened up my budget. The main kids, I had already shopped for, but the website really helped make the movie be what it is. Having Pharrell involved opened up a whole new world to me.”

There was one very specific ’90s trend Milani would not touch: “I knew I couldn’t revisit MC Hammer. I mean, it was scripted, but also, I just didn’t love that look, so I stayed away from it on purpose,” he told Refinery 29.

11 Things You Need to Know About the Late Great Couturiere Madame Carven

WWD reports that Marie-Louise Carven-Grog (born Carmen de Tommaso, and later known as Madame Carven) died today in France at the age of 105. In the post-war era when Christian Dior, Pierre Balmain, and Cristobal Balenciaga were making headlines in fashion, Carven was one of the very few female designers of her time—and an innovator, as well, patenting the push up bra in 1950.

carven-fititng-model-1950

Madame Carven fitting a model in 1950.

Here are 11 of her most fascinating fashion achievements.

1. A couturiere for petite women: The designer launched her namesake house in 1945 with the aim of dressing petite women like her (she was 5’1″).

2. Au revoir corset: Carven wanted women to feel comfortable in her clothes and so she loosened haute couture‘s waist-whittling reins and offered billowing silhouettes that allowed women to move easily in her designs.

3. You can thank her for: Pink gingham!

4. She was into fast(er) fashion: In Carven’s day, Paris was all about haute couture—an exclusive, expensive made-to-measure business. Alongside fellow couturiers Jacques Fath, Robert Piguet, Jean Desses, and Jeanne Paquin, she pioneered prêt-a-portèr, or ready-to-wear. Customers were finally able to get high fashion, way, way, faster.

5. She took fashion shows on the road: Today, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Dior often take their collections out for a spin and show in different cities (think Seoul, Palm Springs, and Cannes). Carven, however, was the first to do so, presenting her collections in Egypt, Thailand, Morocco, Cuba, Brazil, Singapore and Mexico.

6. The OG It-girl brand: Iconic French singer Edith Piaf was a Carven fan, as was Brigitte Bardot, who wore Carven at her 1959 wedding.

7. She invented one of the first push-up bras: Carven worked with a lingerie maker to patent the Sylvène, a push-up bra.

8. She loved Hollywood: In 1954, Carven worked with legendary costume designer Edith Head to create costumes for Grace Kelly in Hitchcock’s Rear Window.

9. A national treasure of France: In 1978, she was named a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and in 2009, she was made a Commander of the Legion of Honor, France’s highest distinction for civilians.

10. She designed for half a century: Madame Carven retired at age 84—48 years after she founded her fashion house.

11. She celebrated a century in style: French style icons Loulou de la Falaise and Claude Montana were among the luminaries who celebrated the designer’s 100th birthday in November 2009. Carven blew out the candles on a pistachio Laduree macaron cake while wearing a matching pistachio-green Carven suit.

Today, Carven is designed by artistic directors Alexis Martial and Adrien Caillaudaud. The collection still has the joy and exuberance the house’s founder. Carven’s former artistic director, Guillaume Henry has often said that Madame Carven was a constant presence—and that they had regular conversations, well into her 100th year. Madame Carven will surely be remembered, as will her impact on all of our wardrobes.

What You Need To Know About The ‘Quiverfull’ Movement

“19 Kids And Counting” stars Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar found themselves in the spotlight for dark reasons this week after reports surfaced that their oldest son, Joshua, molested several young girls, including some of his sisters, during his teenage years. With 19 children, the Duggars are frequently associated with the “Quiverfull” movement — a contingent of conservative Christians who shun contraception — though Michelle and Jim Bob have said they do not formally consider themselves “Quiverfull” Christians.

Even if the family doesn’t openly embrace the ideology, their lifestyle mirrors many of its core principles. To remind you exactly what the movement is all about, here are a few key facts you should know:

The name comes from a passage in the Bible.

Psalm 127 states: “Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their opponents in court.” A quiver, in the old English sense of the word, is a case for holding arrows.

Many couples in the movement believe God won’t give them more children than they can handle.

Families that follow Quiverfull ideals refrain from using contraception, believing that it is only God who “opens and closes the womb,” as adherent Kelly Swanson told NPR. Another adherent told BBC in 2013 that her husband “saw it wasn’t such a scary thing to do after all, and that God wouldn’t overwhelm us with more than we could handle. One baby at a time arrived, and we were handling it, so we felt our marriage was being blessed by this choice and we continued.”

A woman’s ability to bear many children, like Michelle Duggar has, depends partly on overall health and partly on genes, Dr. Karen V. Wells from the Center for Women’s Health at Evergreen Hospital in Washington told NBC News. The outlet noted that after five or six children, women are more prone to post-partum bleeding or hemorrhaging, though one doctor told NBC that having many kids can help protect women from breast and ovarian cancer.

Some Quiverfull adherents believe they are building an army for God — or at least an army of conservative Christians.

Author Nancy Campbell, a well-known proponent of Quiverfull ideology who writes at the website Above Rubies, said in one post that the womb is a “weapon against Satan.”

“It is the womb that conceives and nourishes the ‘godly seed’ who will come forth to be the light in the darkness and who will destroy the works of Satan in this world. God is looking for an army. … The womb is a powerful weapon against Satan. Some women fear to bring babies into this evil world, but this is one of the greatest reasons for having children–to be the light in this dark world!” she wrote.

Kathryn Joyce, author of Quiverfull: Inside the Christian Patriarchy Movement, noted the political aspects of the belief system in a 2006 article on its history. One primary example is the 1990 book A Full Quiver: Family Planning and the Lordship of Christ by Rick and Jan Hess, who bemoaned the lack of conservatives in Washington.

Joyce described the Hess’ thinking: “But if just eight million American Christians began supplying more ‘arrows for the war’ by having six children or more, they propose that the Christian Right ranks could rise to 550 million within a century.”

The Duggar family may hold many of the same beliefs, but they do not self-identify with the Quiverfull movement.

In their book, A Love That Multiplies, Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar wrote: “Even though Wikipedia and some Internet blogs report that we are part of a QuiverFull movement, we are not. We are simply Bible-believing Christians who desire to follow God’s Word and apply it to our lives. God says children are a gift and a blessing, and we believe it.”

Vyckie Garrison, a former adherent to the Quiverfull lifestyle who went on to start the blog “No Longer Quivering,” points out that some may hesitate to label themselves as “Quiverfull” due to the politically charged nature of the term.

But the heart of the lifestyle, which the Duggars demonstrate, is what Garrison calls the practice of “biblical family values.”

The Quiverfull movement is anti-feminist and encourages a patriarchal system.

Doug Phillips, the former president of Vision Forum Ministries who is frequently described as a leader of the Quiverfull movement, has preached a message of “biblical patriarchy,” according to Religion News Service, stating that a man should “rule over his household” and “the God-ordained and proper sphere of dominion for a wife is the household.”

BBC notes that the Quiverfull movement originated in part as a backlash against the feminist movement and growing acceptance of birth control within American Christianity. Joyce adds that some Quiverfull adherents believe birth control to be the “hallmark of selfish feminists.”

Some of the most prominent advocates of the movement have been women.

Mary Pride’s 1985 book, The Way Home: Beyond Feminism, Back to Reality, helped set the stage for the Quiverfull movement. In the book, Pride called family planning “the mother of abortion.”

“A generation had to be indoctrinated in the ideal of planning children around personal convenience before abortion could be popular,” she wrote.

Campbell of Above Rubies says in one post on her site that “the womb is God’s beautiful gift to women. In fact, our whole reproductive cycle is designed especially for us by God.”

The movement has been linked to sexual assault before.

In the wake of the news that Joshua Duggar admitted to molesting underage girls, he released a statement on the family website, saying, “Twelve years ago, as a young teenager I acted inexcusably for which I am extremely sorry and deeply regret. I hurt others, including my family and close friends.”

Quiverfull leader Phillips found himself mired in controversy in 2013 when he admitted to “a lengthy, inappropriate relationship with a woman” who was not his wife. “While we did not ‘know’ each other in a Biblical sense,” Phillips wrote on the Vision Forum Ministries website, “it was nevertheless inappropriately romantic and affectionate.”

The following year, the woman came forward to sue Phillips and Vision Forum for mental distress caused by what she said was an abusive and manipulative relationship. Lourdes Torres-Manteufel alleged in a lawsuit that she met Phillips in 1999 when she was 15 years old and that he manipulated her into moving into his home in 2007. There, she charged, Phillips would repeatedly enter her room at night to touch her body, masturbate and ejaculate on her, despite her protests.

Agents of Change: 5 Forward Thinkers You Need To Know

2015-05-25-1432592092-7061577-famous.jpg

They walk among us–those agents of change. Sometimes, we just need to be reminded of who they are. Take note of five luminous entities that strive to make the world a better place.

The F*** It Duo
Here’s one to savor. They said F**k It to their jobs and moved to Italy years ago and in 2005, they created their first F**k It Retreat. Meet Mr. and Mrs. F**k It, John Parkin and Gaia Pollini (pictured above). Ten years have passed and since that time, the couple birthed the first F**k It Book (“F**k It: The Ultimate Spiritual Way”/ 2008/ Hay House). Additional F**k It literary siblings emerged. The books have been translated into 22 languages and have sold more than 400,000 copies. Workshops, retreats, one-on-one counseling, e-courses, and expanded F**k Its in London and Ireland have risen out of the fertile soil of the duo’s F**k It imaginations. And then, in 2011, The Hill That Breathes (in Urbano, Italy), the fabulous F**k It locale, won Best European Retreat (Natural Health). The secret to this couple’s undeniably unique success? F**k if I know. Well, I do. Somewhat. It’s two words–and not those, by the way. It’s these two: Let Go. Or, in this case, a more nuanced practice in the art of letting go by using a unique therapeutic tool: Profanity. Relax, it’s not all swear words and then nirvana happens–not really. Although the couple’s modality tends to lean toward being über fun if not laughter provoking. What was it a yogi once told me: “An anxious mind cannot exist in a relaxed body.” The point is this: transformation may occur when you relax first, and then turn toward that thing you are so fretting over, breathe and embrace it–by saying F*** It of course. There’s more to it, but you get the picture. Regardless, when you’re on a mission to locate agents of change near and far, like I am, it’s a treat to find these two doing so well, one F-Bomb at a time.

Lynne McTaggart and The Intention Experiment
McTaggart, a best-selling author, researcher and lecturer, is renowned for how well she creates a bridge between science and spirituality. Her books, “The Bond,” “The Field,” “What Doctors Don’t Tell You,” and “The Intention Experiment,” each, on some level, rise beyond pedestrian trinket-acquiring “spirituality” and suggest that there is a more powerful field of energy within us and around us; that we are far more powerful and connected to each other than we were led to believe. But it’s McTaggart’s Intention Experiment which continues to draw significant interest. It finds the author/lecturer overseeing unique intentions en masse on the web, which have been called one of the largest mind-over-matter trials ever undertaken. By inviting like-minded souls together who can hold a singular vision for, say, peace in a certain region, can peace then be experienced in that region? That’s the thrust behind the Intention Experiment–harnessing the intentions of thousands of participants on a specific topic. McTaggart first chronicled all this in her book of the same name, asking: “if we are connected, can our thoughts and intentions affect and change the world and things ‘out there?'” Her compelling evidence suggests that the answer is, indeed, yes. Imagine then, what could happen if the entire populace of, say, New York City held a glorious intention for a set amount of time? What effect could that have? A powerful one me thinks.

Polish Heritage Festival, Belmont, California
Poland has been making major headlines over the last nine months. Where to begin? There’s the country’s surprising economic boom and recent election–conservative challenger Andrzej Duda defeated the incumbent, Bronislaw Komorowski. And lest we forget the significant anniversary markers in 2014 and 2015–the former commemorated the 75th anniversary of the German and Russian invasion of Poland, as well as the Katyn massacre; the latter the mass deportation of Polish citizens by Stalin. A number of Polish organizations have been paying tribute to their heritage as well as their fallen comrades over the last year especially, and while each year ushers in a crop of Polish festivals throughout the Bay Area, this year, for the first time, the Polish community is being asked to come together for a larger event to be held in Belmont, California. This will mark the first ever collaborative event organized by several Polish groups. Co-sponsors include Polish Society of California/PNA Lodge 7, The Polish Club, San Francisco, Łowiczanie Polish Folk Ensemble of San Francisco and The Polonian Cultural and Pastoral Center (PCPC) in Sacramento. There is also an emphasis on the importance of the Polish-American Congress, which strives to meet the challenges facing Polish-Americans. Dancing, Polish cuisine, history and much more are expected to converge at the May 30 outing, but what stands out significantly here is the solidarity emanating from the groups that are bringing the event to fruition, especially at a time when Poland is wonderfully newsworthy. Village Yoga, Santa Cruz, California
As an author, travel writer and cultural moderator, I travel across the country for work on numerous occasions. I always make a point of dipping in to a yoga studio wherever I am. I have found some marvels in the likes of Bloomington, Indiana, and Kansas City, Missouri, and in an around California and then some. With thousands of yoga studios around the country, it’s challenging to pick just one that stands out. But I did find one that flies to the top of the list for any summer travelers out there, and anyone who might be interested in knowing what makes a business really thrive. So, what makes this Bikram Yoga portal in Santa Cruz, California--a mecca town for yoga studios by the way–rise above the others? What about the popular Funky Door in San Francisco? Or Chicago’s 105F, which offers a spirit-enhancing Gong Bath from time to time? Or any others for that matter? The answer rests in the title perhaps and, to me, it hearkens back to the old saying: “It takes a village.” Founded by Sally Adams and Amy Mihal in early 2001–the two women had big followings at San Francisco’s popular Global Yoga, founded by the remarkable Mary Jarvis–the studio has evolved into a vibrant mini community center on some level, with workshops, body work, coaching, nutrition, skin care and, well, plenty of yoga. Beyond its Bikram offerings, there are Vinyasa classes, as well as Yin/Restorative, a silent class and meditation. All that is good, however the main thing that stands out here is how well the owners nurture their clientele and, without much effort it seems, lure them in to participate in their ever-expanding enterprise that trickles back into the community. The works of local artists and photographers can often be seen on the walls. Locals are also invited to speak at workshops–think Oprah’s Soul Sunday series in a more relaxed environment. Encouragement abounds. You feel it the moment you walk in the door. And let’s face it, for any of us who are spiritually inclined and have done something like yoga or meditation, it doesn’t take much to actually pick up on the vibe of a place. Good juju exists here and the ripple effects are felt outside the door. Fitting, because what was it I once heard? True yoga takes place off the mat. Here’s to bending a little–or, in this case, a lot.

Robert Holden / Shift Happens
Folks may recall Holden’s PBS special Shift Happens! or his two BBC-TV docs on happiness. An author of numerous books–“Happiness NOW!”, “Shift Happens!”, “Holy Shift!” and his latest “Life Loves You,” co-written with “You Can Heal Your Life” maven Louise Hay, Holden’s approach to living a more balanced, vibrant life has been well received, to say the least. His book “Shift Happens” morphed into a popular weekly Hay House Radio show, which has now attracted an impressive posse of motivational speakers and new thought agents–from Esther Hicks and Dorene Virtue to Norman Shealy and Caroline Myss. The intention here is offer listeners an opportunity to tap into their own power more fully and step into life in new ways, creating a remarkable transformation. Change they say, is not often easy, but for those us out there that want shift to occur, it’s refreshing to know that we don’t have to go at it alone. Here’s to Holden’s thoughtful approach and the impact it generates.

5 Things You Didn’t Know About ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’

As summer approaches, all we really want to do is what you did in years past. Or, you know, get Jennifer Love Hewitt to talk to us about her iconic role as Julie James in the 1997 slasher, “I Know What You Did Last Summer.”

Here are some stories JLH told The Huffington Post about the horror flick:

1. The famous scene where Hewitt yells in the street was thought up by a fan who got to tell the actors what to do.

TK TK gifs

According to Hewitt, a fan who loved horror movies “got the chance to come to the set and choose a moment in that movie for somebody to do.”

Hewitt said that it was never supposed to be her line and she wasn’t supposed to do the iconic scene originally. In her recollection, the fan said, “I think that she should stand in the middle of the street and spin around and say, ‘What are you waiting for?'” When Hewitt was told about this scene she responded, “You want me to what?! How am I going to look like a normal person doing that?”

Now the moment is a “really sweet memory” for Hewitt and has a special place in her heart. “People don’t know that that was just like some kid who loved horror movies,” said Hewitt. “I’m glad I got to do that for him.”

2. Hewitt didn’t know that Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar were going to end up together.

i know what you did last summer

Prinze and Gellar would eventually get married in 2002 — half a decade after the movie came out — but at the time of “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” Hewitt didn’t see the inklings of a lasting relationship just yet.

When asked about it, Hewitt laughed and said she was “just trying to make it through [her] first lead role” and wasn’t concentrating all too much on those two.

3. “I Know What You Did Last Summer” was based on a book.

i know what you did last summer

“I Know What You Did Last Summer” is based on a book with the same name. There was controversy at the time the movie came out as the original story wasn’t intended to be a slasher.

Hewitt eventually read the book, but “way after the movie.”

4. Hewitt was actually really scared while filming the movie and had trouble sleeping.

TK TK gifs

Hewitt said her young age contributed to this and explained a specific instance of terror involving the villain. “So, three o’clock in the morning, you’re running in fog in the middle of North Carolina from a guy that you barely know, with a hook on his hand,” Hewitt laughed. “You’re supposed to be scared out of your mind.”

The filming sometimes affected her sleep schedule as Hewitt explained, “There were definitely days where I went home and was like, ‘I’m supposed to be asleep now. I don’t think that that’s going to happen.'”

“There were definitely moments where it felt actually scary, but it was fun.”

5. Filming the escape scenes from the killer led to real bruising.

i know what you did last summer

“I was bruised a lot from falling and chasing and running,” Hewitt admitted.

Hewitt said that it was “a lot of hours” and “a lot of work,” but still thought the process was “just kids sort of playing around, but doing this really important big thing.”

All images from “I Know What You Did Last Summer” unless otherwise noted.

This interview took place as part of Hewitt’s promotional tour for Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula, which she has used throughout her current pregnancy.

Plus-Size Model Tess Holliday Lands a People Cover: 5 Things to Know About Her

Ever since she became the first size-22 model to score a major contract with U.K.-based Milk Management, Tess Holliday’s name has been all over the news. And it’s probably safe to say she’s not going anywhere as she just landed the cover of People, on newsstands this Friday. In case you’re not quite up to date on the modeling sensation, here’s a primer.

tess-holliday-swimsuit-ad-campaign-two-piece

Her real name is Ryann Hoven: According to Buzzfeed, Holliday was born Ryann Hoven and has also been known as Tess Munster and Tess Typhoon. The mother of one to son Riley, nine, has been using her fiancé Nick Holliday’s last name professionally since January.

Holliday’s big break came from an unlikely source: Though she wasn’t a cast member, Holliday was the face of the A&E TV show Heavy. She appeared in nationwide print and billboard ads for the show. Since then she’s gone on to model for brands such as Domino Dollhouse and Jessica Louise Clothing. She’s also been featured in Vogue Italia.

She almost didn’t make it in the industry: After being turned away from an audition in Atlanta at 15 for being “too short and too big,” Holliday posted photos of herself on Model Mayhem. It was only then that her career started to take off.

Holliday is the founder of viral body-positive moment Eff Your Beauty Standards: She started it on Instagram two years ago, “as a way of giving the metaphorical middle finger to society in regards to what we’re told we can’t wear and what we should like when you’re plus size,” says the model. The account currently has more than 100,000 followers, while the hashtag has been used over 700,000 times.

Last May, Holliday teamed up with Gabi Gregg and Nadia Aboulhosn on the #everyBODYisflawless movement: Check out their remix to Beyonce’s video.

What do you think about Tess Holliday landing this magazine cover? Hear more from the model in this video, then discuss in the comments!

I’m In An Open Marriage And You Would Never Know It

By Gwen & Lark for YourTango

Everyone has a secret. Things we don’t want people to know because we are embarrassed, too proud or too private. We keep secrets because some things are too intimate and special for anyone else to know. But sometimes we keep secrets because we may feel like we will be harshly judged and don’t want to invite the criticism that may follow. Often, we just simply don’t know who we can trust with sensitive information because it might illicit unwanted gossip.

For example, you would never know I have an “open” marriage. I’m not the lady in the 4-inch heels at school pick up that wears skin-tight jeans or has DD implants. I don’t have wild parties where people stagger home with someone else’s spouse because they picked their car keys from a bowl on the coffee table. I’m just another mom who drives a sensible car, does the grocery shopping, wears clothes from Ann Taylor, goes jogging to stay fit — and occasionally has sex with men who are not my husband.

If I ever told you about this part of my life — which I probably wouldn’t unless you were an extremely close friend — your first reaction might be “What? How? But what about your kids?”

Surely, you already have an image in your mind about what an open marriage is.

It’s often mistaken for polygamy, where a man lives together with multiple women like the show Sister Wives or Big Love. Or you might think that it’s a convenient excuse for a husband to have sex with other women without losing the security of having a wife or the social complexities of having a mistress.

What most people who have never experienced an open marriage might not understand is that every open marriage is different. And it’s probably not what you think, unless you know someone personally who has one. (And you probably do, you just don’t know it yet!).

Not everyone in an open marriage is some kind of sex-addicted freak show. Between household duties, raising children and having a meaningful relationship with my husband, I do not have a lot of time to dedicate to having sex with other people, even if I wanted to.

I do not have sex with every man I meet. I do not want to steal your husband. I do not even want to have sex with your husband. I do not have sex at the grocery store or soccer practice or bring strange men into our home.

My open marriage did not start out as such. It was very much closed with a big, iron door and the thought of that ever changing never once crossed my mind in the first 13 years of our marriage. My husband, on the other hand, had been making threesome jokes for at least 10 of those 13 years and often wondered out loud about all the sex he missed out on in his youth.

He grew up in a very conservative family where sex before marriage was considered a sin. I had a similar upbringing but had secretly given in to my desires and had been with someone before I met my husband. I felt incredibly guilty about it because that’s not what “good” girls do.

But eventually the reasons against experimenting sexually with other people were overshadowed by the curiosity — and the exhausting requests by my husband.

We didn’t know exactly how this kind of thing worked, so we took a risk and asked some friends who we thought might know. It’s a delicate subject to broach, but we felt like a few conversations we had in the past left us with some clues that they were, if not in an open marriage, at least open-minded people when it came to sex.

Our hunch was right, and they told us about a place in town where we could go — what you might call a “Swingers Club”. After talking about it for so long, I was ready to at least go and have a look and was excited and nervous to see what it was like. The club itself was dark with a lot of scantily-clad women and sharply dressed men dancing or milling around the bar sipping drinks while lights flashed and stage smoke puffed up from the floor. Some people were sitting on the vinyl couches in a separate area behind the dance floor, chatting and caressing each other.

The beat of the music was pounding as hard as my heart was pumping in my chest. What am I doing here? Am I weird for wanting to know what happens here? Am I depraved? While most people hired a babysitter to go to dinner and a movie, we had left our children at home so we could watch come here and … what?

Pretty much anything goes in a club of that nature, but it’s different for everyone.

For our first foray, we stayed together and only exchanged touches with other couples. We had agreed in advance this was more of a reconnaissance mission than a full-blown invasion into open marriage. But that night things happened — I won’t go into detail out of respect for my husband — that sparked a change in what the both of us wanted and needed in our marriage. Our curiosity (and the subsequent desire to satisfy it) came from a place of safety and security in the relationship we had fostered over the last decade.

It has been a few years since our first visit to that club and our relationship has changed and grown with time, as all relationships tend to do. The rules of our open marriage have evolved and developed over time, where we now both understand what the other person needs ,and we feel comfortable with that.

The key for us is communication and respect. It also means that our relationship comes first. We spend quality time together, we date each other, we clean the house on Saturdays and take the kids to dance and soccer. And occasionally, if one of us is on a solo business trip or a night on the town with friends, that big iron door is flung open and we let ourselves have fun. We’re young(ish), good-looking and in good shape. And we enjoy it when it feels right and safe.

None of our outside experiences are kept private from each other.

We both know what the other spouse is doing, and sometimes we do it together. I’m happy to share with my spouse the details of any sexual adventure I might have, just as he would do for me if I asked (although we don’t always want to know). An open marriage for me means having new sexual experiences without guilt or shame.

As “open” as we are with each other about this aspect in our relationship, we are not open about it with our kids. Just like we don’t talk to them about the complexities of getting a mortgage, why and how we invest our money or what kind of birth control we use, we don’t talk to our kids about this small but delicate aspect to our marriage.

They’re too young to understand that if mom sleeps with the mailman (just kidding — he’s not my type) that that doesn’t mean Mom and Dad are getting a divorce. They don’t understand about commitment, unity or loyalty on the level required when discussing an open marriage. They’re kids — and they need to stay that way.

So they play with Barbies, Legos and fight with each other and don’t ever have to worry about whether Mom and Dad love each other. Because we show them every day when we eat breakfast together or dance around the kitchen or cheer them on that we’re a family and that’s never going to change.

But if the day comes when one of them says to me, “You know, Mom, this one time I heard a rumor… ” I’m not going to lie.

I will sit down with my child and answer any questions they might have and explain that for us, this lifestyle works. Maybe then they will be ready to grasp the idea that you can love someone, spend your life devoted to them emotionally, be best friends, lovers… and have sex with someone else on the side. But until that day comes, I’ll keep the secret between me, my husband and, well, you.

Unomum is our space to explore the many million issues of single motherhood, but it’s also for all the ladies — women stuck in shitty marriages, unfulfilled broads wishing for divorce, and happily coupled former single moms with a shit-ton of wisdom to share.

One Thing You Can Do to Know Yourself Better

2015-05-09-1431207459-8802235-W6PG4Y8WAK.jpg

stocksnap.io by Daniel Bowman

The rain was coming down hard on the skylight in my living room just before 6 a.m. I breathed in the smell of my coffee before the first sip. I sat my mug down near the lamp on my favorite, mirrored, dragonfly table and picked up my notebook. I glanced down at my reflection and noticed how gravity tugged at my face. It made me think of other things that have been pulling at me lately. I wrote them down one by one — my gratitude and grudges and plans and petitions. I asked for grace, for guidance, for patience, for perspective.

In that moment, I realized how my journal has become an altar over the years, the place I lay my life before God. Coming to this altar each morning is the one thing I’ve done consistently for as long as I can remember.

I didn’t start out calling it anything specific or doing it with the intention of spiritual growth. Really, I just started writing things down because it helped me feel slightly sane. I could move the crowded and sometimes cruel dialogue out of my inner landscape into the physical world, where the words could run free (and hopefully away from me). Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn’t.

But what did work, is that the page itself never turned my words away — no matter if they were pitiful or brave, dark or light, caddy or compassionate, fearful or funny. The page would always take whatever I brought. And if I stayed on the page long enough, it would tell me wonderful secrets about myself. It would offer new perspectives, solutions, comfort, and even humor, as my hand moved across the lines.

For decades, I have decluttered my mind and my life in this way. Through it, I’ve learned that divine guidance flows steadily when we consistently show up to receive it.

People often ask me how I ended up doing what I do- following my dreams and pursuing my purpose. It did not happen with one big bang like some might suppose. But through a small, consistent practice, I got to know myself.

If you want one actionable step you can take without a lot of fuss, make a daily date with yourself and get quiet. There are no specific rules for this date except that you show up. This is not a call for “quiet-time” or “journaling.” Sure, you can write things down like I do — but you don’t have to; you can just breathe.

The point is to hold the space.

Breathe in deeply and breathe out the junk that’s trashing your inner landscape, because that is priceless real estate.

Breathe in purity; breathe out pollution. Breathe in patience; breathe out busyness. Breathe in peace; breathe out each problem. Breathe in courage; breathe out fear. Breathe in forgiveness; breathe out grudges. Breathe in trust; breathe out your need to be in control. Breathe in clarity; breathe out confusion. Breathe in love for yourself; breathe out condemnation. Breathe in compassion for others; breathe out judgment. Breathe in what you need, breathe out what you don’t.

Kept daily, this date with yourself will become your altar. It is in this place of quiet communion that will you learn to listen, to yourself and to Divine guidance. It is from this place your authentic heart will rise up and make itself known. As you begin to breathe and listen, you will find peace and strength and clarity for your life.

Don’t label it. Don’t table it. Just make the date.

Because this one little habit, done diligently, will set you on the road to follow your dreams and pursue your purpose.

Charlize Theron: ‘Girls Need To Know That Being A Feminist Is A Good Thing’

Every time Charlize Theron opens her mouth we fall in love with her more and more.

In a recent interview for ELLE UK’s June 2015 issue, the Oscar-winning actress discussed her experiences with the wage gap in Hollywood and how she refuses to be objectified by filmmakers.

She stressed that women need to stand up for themselves when it comes to being paid fairly — starting with simply asking to be. “I have to give them credit because once I asked, they said yes. They did not fight it,” she said. “And maybe that’s the message: That we just need to put our foot down.”

She went on to define feminism and explain why it’s so integral to achieving pay equality. “This is a good time for us to bring this to a place of fairness, and girls need to know that being a feminist is a good thing,” Theron said. “It doesn’t mean that you hate men. It means equal rights. If you’re doing the same job, you should be compensated and treated in the same way.”

charlize theron

Theron has repeatedly stood up against the wage gap. After the massive Sony Pictures hack that revealed many actresses were paid much less than their male co-stars in recent films, Theron used the leaked information to ensure pay equality with her male co-star in her film “The Huntsman.”

“When I thought about the temperature out there — with finding out what Jennifer and Amy were being paid on a set with guy actors who are their counterparts… They’re just as good as any of the guys on there. Yeah, that p*ssed me off!” Theron told ELLE.

The 39-year-old actress also discussed what it’s like being objectified as a woman in Hollywood. “Someone thought it was a good idea to market almost the entire movie on me; objectifying me a little bit,” she said. “I got a lot of attention from it, but the problem was that, afterwards, it was like, ‘We want you to do that again. Can you just do that?’ And so I didn’t work for almost two years.”

You do you, Charlize.

8 Things You Didn’t Know About ‘Avengers’

The new “Avengers: Age of Ultron” could totally pick up Thor’s hammer if it wanted. It is predicted to eclipse $ 80 million in its second weekend, and it continues to run faster than Quicksilver on its way to $ 1 billion globally. In other words, this movie is worthy.

In addition to commercial success, the film has also had fairly positive reviews, but perhaps one knock is the lack of fan favorite villain Loki. That was the knock, anyway.

Recently, the Internet went wild after it was revealed that actor Tom Hiddleston did actually shoot some footage. It was just cut so the movie didn’t seem too cramped. The Loki news was a shocking revelation, but as it turns out, there are a lot of other facts fans might not know about the “Avengers” franchise:

1. There are strict rules so Quicksilver can appear in the “X-Men” and “Avengers” movies.

Image: Tumblr

Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch were originally the son and daughter of the “X-Men” character Magneto. Because “X-Men” owns the rights to the mutant storyline, the “Avengers” version has the characters receiving their powers from HYDRA experiments.

2. Chris Evans doesn’t eat his shawarma because he’s wearing facial prosthetics.

After Iron Man hilariously suggests grabbing some food upon saving the world in “Avengers,” the group is seen getting some chow. What you might’ve not noticed is Chris Evans doesn’t take a bite. Entertainment Weekly reports the actor hid his face and wore prosthetics to cover up a beard.

3. Godzilla is in the Marvel universe and has fought the Avengers before.

Image: Imgur

Godzilla’s opponents in Marvel comics have included the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, Thor and the other Avengers. Also, as a side note, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch actors Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen play husband and wife in 2014’s “Godzilla.”

4. Marvel action figures are made with the actual graphics files from the movie for accuracy.

Image: Giphy

Hasbro designer Dwight Stall tells HuffPost Entertainment: “Once Iron Man is created in the new film, once Hulkbuster is created, they send the working files, which we share with our sculpting partners, and together we decide how we want to cut the articulation into the forms … You can’t get a more accurate representation in a toy than that.”

5. Toy releases also hint at the major storylines.

Hasbro’s Adam Biehl tells HuffPost that Marvel tries to let kids reenact major scenes from the film. This means designers work closely with filmmakers while the script is still being written to find things like “what the key beats are, who are the key characters, what are the key action scenes and what are the key costume changes.”

6. A huge Spider-Man crossover almost made it in the “Avengers” movies.

Image: IGN

The Oscorp building, which is well known in the world of Spider-Man, nearly made it into the “Avengers” films. It was reportedly scrapped because by the time it was fully designed, the “Avengers” version of Manhattan was already nearly finished.

7. Lou Ferrigno is still the voice of The Hulk.

Image: Tumblr

The actor who played the Hulk in the ’70s TV series told ComicBook.com that Marvel has a library of his “voices and growls” that they use on everything. He also revealed Hulk’s famous “puny god” line from the first “Avengers” movie was all him, too.

8. Tom Hiddleston was almost Thor instead of Loki.

Hiddleston’s screen test for the part can be seen on the “Thor: The Dark World” DVD extras. In an interview with The Guardian, the actor explains, “Every English-speaking actor over six foot was being seen for the part. I got down to the final five.” By the way, that final five also reportedly included Chris Hemsworth’s brother Liam.

In the end, it’s probably good Hiddleston missed out on the part. As the actor says …

8 Dead White Male Artists You Should Know

men

Throughout the history of art, many brave and creative spirits have exposed their souls, their imaginations and their ideas about the world through the power of visual expression. Today, we’re honoring eight individuals whose artistic expression has transformed the conversation surrounding representation, the role of the artist, the relationship between figuration and abstraction, and the power of art. The most inspirational part is, they managed to explore these issues and more, as white men.

Behold, eight dead, white, male artists who blow us away with their talent as well as their modesty.***

1. Claude Monet (1840-1926)
“My life has been nothing but a failure.”

monet

The work of French painter Claude Monet (pronounced Mo-Nay) isknown for his paintings of water lilies in the idyllic gardens of Giverny. Sadly, his work remains confined to institutions like the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Musée d’Orsay, and sells for millions of dollars. IMHO, those canvases are whimsical enough to warrant billion dollar price tags.

2. Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519)
“I have offended God and mankind because my work didn’t reach the quality it should have.”

da

Leonardo has been dubbed a “genius,” as well as the “Renaissance humanist ideal.” There are forums dedicated to whether or not he was the most talented person that has ever lived. One of his most celebrated paintings, the “Mona Lisa,” is likely the most famous portrait of all time, but it’s also the most parodied, and sometimes that stuff gets mean spirited.

3. Henri Matisse (1869-1954)
“It has bothered me all my life that I do not paint like everybody else.”

henri matisse

Matisse (pronounced Muh-Tees) is known as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, as well as the leader of the Fauvists, French for “wild beasts,” a group of artists who privileged intense and unnatural color, sometimes straight from the tube. In 2005 one of his pieces sold for $ 25 million to the Museum of Modern Art. It’s not even one of the super famous ones.

4. Édouard Manet (1832-1883)
“This woman’s work is exceptional. Too bad she’s not a man.”

m

In the mid-19th century, Manet (pronounced Man-ehh?) painted provocative artworks such as “The Luncheon on the Grass,” and “Olympia,” both radical for their use of a nude subject staring straight at the viewer without shame. Some say his career sparked the beginning of modern art. Also, his name sounds a lot like Monet (see #1 on list) who is slightly more famous, which, we can only imagine, must have been frustrating.

5. Michelangelo (1475-1564)
“If people knew how hard I worked to get my mastery, it wouldn’t seem so wonderful at all.”

portrait

The Encyclopedia Britannica subtly states: “Michelangelo was considered the greatest living artist in his lifetime, and ever since then he has been held to be one of the greatest artists of all time.” He’s responsible for works like the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and the “Pietà,” and yet we’re still left wondering: but who is Michelangelo?

6. Pablo Picasso (1881–1973)
“My mother said to me, ‘If you are a soldier, you will become a general. If you are a monk, you will become the Pope.’ Instead, I was a painter, and became Picasso.”

picasso photo

As Norman Mailer once put it: “By general consensus, Pablo Picasso is the most brilliant and influential artist of this century.” Among other things, he co-founded Cubism, invented constructed sculpture and helped popularize collage. Sadly, however, many individuals still hurl disparaging comments at him, like “my five-year-old could do that.”

7. Paul Gauguin (1848-1903)
“We never really know what stupidity is until we have experimented on ourselves.”

gaug

Gauguin (pronounced Go-gan) is a key figure in Symbolist, Post-Impressionist and Primitivist art. He’s also, perhaps less widely, known as the former stockbroker who left his wife and five children to embark on a hunt to “discover the primitive.” In other words, he moved to Tahiti and took adolescent girls for wives. Get this guy a reality show!

8. Edgar Degas (1834-1917)
“Painting is easy when you don’t know how, but very difficult when you do.”

degas

Degas (pronounced Day-gah) is known for his weightless depictions of ballerinas in motion, combining on-stage performances with awkward behind-the-scenes moments. He’s also known as one of the founders of Impressionism. His bronze sculpture creepily titled “Little Dancer of Fourteen Years” was estimated to draw between $ 25 million and $ 35 million during a Christie’s auction in 2009. There were no bids. It did not sell.

By Hollee Actman Becker for TheKnot.com

You’ve finally found a gown, but before you can breathe a huge sigh of relief, kick back and relax until your wedding day, you’ve got to find the final touch that will complete your transformation from basic to bride. It all comes down to choosing the right veil. Think the waltz is just a dance step? The chapel only a place to say your vows? Could it really be that easy? Check our glossary to find out.
