Leaked ‘Game Of Thrones’ Video May Be Your First Look At Season 6

Filming of “Game of Thrones” season 6 is well underway. Thanks to the obsessive sleuthing of the fandom and some sneaky paparazzi work by enterprising locals, we already know a lot about what’s in store (including the fact that Jon Snow almost certainly did not stay dead). But we haven’t seen any footage from the set — until now.

On Tuesday, Spanish fan site Los Siete Reinos posted a covertly shot video showing what seems to be a sword fight outside the Tower of Joy. The video looks like it was taken on a cellphone, a long distance from the set at the 900-year-old Castillo de Zafra, so you can’t make out much. But there’s clearly man-to-man fighting going on. Take a look:

Los Siete Reinos — Spanish for “The Seven Kingdoms” — posted still photos from the same sequence. They, too, are blurry and shot from afar. But the lack of detail didn’t stop “Game of Thrones” fan site Winter is Coming from speculating that the characters fighting are Ned Stark and Arthur Dayne, and that the woman in white standing near them is Ned’s sister Lyanna.

Fans have suspected for some time that season 6 would include the Tower of Joy sequence. Casting calls for the show included a posting for a character called Legendary Fighter, who many believe is Ser Arthur Dayne, a famed Dornish member of King Aerys’s Kingsguard. The casting call said the character “carries a hugely famous sword on his back.” In “A Song Of Ice And Fire,” the book series upon which “Game of Thrones” is based, Dayne wields a sword called Dawn, which was forged, likely from a meteorite, thousands of years ago before the events of the series.

The Emmy-winning fifth season of “Game of Thrones” brought the show’s plot nearly to the end of the events depicted in the books George R.R. Martin has published thus far, so even diehard readers are in the dark about much of what will take place in season 6.

But the fight at the Tower of Joy is an exception. We got some of the story — or at least Ned Stark’s memory of it many years later — in the first book, A Game of Thrones

The story goes that near the end of Robert’s Rebellion, Ned Stark and six of his companions rode to the castle in the Red Mountains of Dorne, where Prince Rhaegar Targaryen had taken Lyanna Stark after “abducting” her. Rhaegar had named the castle “The Tower of Joy.” When Stark et al. arrived, they encountered three members of the Kingsguard — Dayne, Ser Oswald Whent and Lord Commander Gerold Hightower — guarding the entrance.

A brutal fight ensued. Even though the knights of the Kingsguard were outnumbered, they managed to kill five of Stark’s party. Ned Stark later said that Dayne would have killed him, too, had his old friend Howland Reed — father of Bran’s traveling companions Jojen and Meera Reed — not saved his life. When Stark and Reed entered the tower, they found Lyanna dying in a “bed of blood.”

Here’s where things get really interesting. Before Lyanna died, she made Stark promise something. He never revealed what. But fans think that it concerned Jon Snow — who, the theory goes, was actually the child she had with Rhaegar. The bed was bloody, by this thinking, because Lyanna had just given birth. She made her brother promise to claim that Jon was his own son to keep him safe.

There’s a bit more evidence for the R+L=J theory scattered throughout the books. But it all ultimately rests on the Tower of Joy sequence. Which is assumedly why “Game of Thrones” creators Daniel Benioff and D.B. Weiss chose to film the sequence for the next season. It could be their way of confirming, once and for all, the theory that Jon Snow is the son of Rhaegar and Lyanna.

It’s still not clear how the sequence will fit into the show. Season 5 began with the first flashback of the series — a childhood memory of Cersei Lannister’s. But everyone present at the fight is dead by the time season 6 starts — except Howland Reed. Many fans believe that Reed — who hasn’t yet made an appearance in the books — will reveal what transpired, and therefore Jon’s parentage, at some point in the last two books.

Maybe that’s what will happen in the show, too. But casting info makes it clear that this isn’t the only flashback we’ll see in season 6. So the prevailing theory instead is that Bran Stark will use his mysterious and growing powers to look back in time, and that the fight at the Tower of Joy will be seen through his mind’s eye.

The strongest evidence of this theory? Isaac Hempstead-Wright, the actor who plays Bran, was allegedly spotted at the Castillo de Zafra this week. At this point in the series, Bran is in a cave north of the Wall, thousands of miles from Dorne, so there’s basically no way he’s going to travel to the Tower of Joy in person.

The bottom line? Jon is the son of Rhaegar and Lyanna. And we’re finally going to get confirmation this spring.

Get a Look at All The Crazy Bags and Accessories from the Moschino Spring 2016 Show

We’re at that mid-point of fashion month, where we’ve seen the stunning (Givenchy), the cerebral (Gucci), and the sexy (Fausto Puglisi), but what we all really need right now is a nice, long, giggle. Enter the comic relief, Jeremy Scott. Never one to take himself too seriously in the oh-so-serious work of high fashion, the designer presented his Moschino collection on Thursday in Milan in a makeshift carwash. No, that’s not a typo. Let the giggles ensue.

With the theme of carwashes and construction—think, hard hats, caution tape, and street signs—the hotly-anticipated collection ran the gamut from construction worker-inspired neon skirt suits, to colored car wash chamois-inspired fringes. Call it…Home Depot chic?

South Coast Plaza Eyes Men’s Market With Debut Look Book

CUSTOM APPROACH: South Coast Plaza is showing some love to the male shopper.
The Orange County shopping center this evening will host a private event at the Berluti store to celebrate South Coast’s first men’s fall marketing book.
It’s a strategic move for the center as more chatter builds around men’s and the HENRYs consumer — high-earnings, not rich yet shoppers — or male Millennials.
“With the international growth in the men’s wear category, we wanted to shine the spotlight on our unparalleled collection of men’s boutiques, which represent some of the world’s most coveted names, from fashion-forward brands to esteemed sartorial leaders,” said South Coast executive director of marketing Debra Gunn Downing in a statement.
The book includes looks from Berluti, Boss, Burberry, Dolce & Gabbana, Salvatore Ferragamo, Giorgio Armani, Louis Vuitton, Oliver Peoples and Ralph Lauren.
South Coast counts more than 70 boutiques that sell men’s apparel or accessories and both new and existing tenants have taken more notice of the male customer.
COS, expected to open in October, and Massimo Dutti, slated for a November opening, will both carry men’s.
Roberto Cavalli relocated this year and added men’s when it reopened its doors. Dolce & Gabbana opened at South Coast Plaza, also earlier this

McDonald’s Server’s “Porcelain Doll” Look Has Diners Lovin’ It

The infatuated customers who visit a Taiwan McDonald’s have a happy meal no matter what they order as long as a certain server is there.

Wei Han Xu, aka McDonald’s Goddess and Weiwei, has become a viral sensation after a customer took pictures of the big-eyed beauty at work and posted them on his blog.

“It’s my pleasure to introduce her from Taiwan to the world,” RainDog told The Huffington Post on Monday. (Article continues below images.)

The photos have lured customers to the Taipei location in droves and generated lots of media attention outside the country.

AdWeek rhapsodized over her “stunning, porcelain-doll-faced” appearance, writing she could “easily double as an anime character.”

The aspiring model’s social media accounts have blown up, and she has parlayed her fast food fame into appearances on local talk shows as well, AdWeek reported.

On the downside, her McD’s manager isn’t thrilled with the publicity because fans often crowd the counter to take pictures and leave without buying something, Asian news site Rocket News 24 wrote.

Mashable called attention to the unsavory side of her popularity, saying she had become an “object of the Internet’s increasingly creepy affection.”

“While it seems from her social media that Weiwei doesn’t mind the newfound attention, here’s hoping that her fans view her as more than french fry-slinging sexual object,” the site wrote.

Videos like the one below probably don’t help. Here she is in a pink maid’s outfit as part of a store promotion a few years ago.

Stop What You’re Texting And Look At This New Emoticon

Hello, everyone. It is the year 2015. We still punctuate our emails and texts with little human faces; we’ve just moved on to emojis, where the faces are a little cuter. And there’s one that looks like poop.

We’re not too good for emoticons. They’re just not the novelty they once were in, say, 2001. Some we never really figured out — looking at you, weird dollar sign mouth (“:$ “) — so we stick to smiles and frowns. They’re pretty old news, TBH.

But what if we told you there’s a new emoticon? That you haven’t seen? Even though you’ve seen all of them?

Behold!

What? Where? Why? Glad you asked.

What it is: An apostrophe, a comma, a colon and a closed parenthetical mark make up this new sassy smiley. ‘,:)

Where it came from: We found it on someone’s Tumblr, above the comment “10/10,” and was originally posted by user failsyndrome. It is not listed on Wikipedia’s list of emoticons. If you’ve been using it this whole time, congratulations on your genius, but no thanks for not sharing.

Why we need it: The human experience encompasses a wide range of emotions which are sometimes conveyed visually in the form of facial expressions. This one, to us, is the face you make when you go, “Really?” while you’re trying to size someone up in a friendly way but you’re right on the edge of getting real. Like this:

Also, we just want to point out that if it’s 2015 and people are still discovering new ways to anthropomorphize punctuation, then there are probably some other emoticons out there waiting to be found. Happy hunting.

A Look At Bernie Sanders’ Spoken Word Album And Full Discography

We all know that Bernie Sanders recorded a spoken word album. But not a lot of people know that Bernie has a robust catolog of musical work. So I thought it was important to look at all of Bernie Sanders’ albums and see where his spoken word album landed. Also, I’m sure you’ve been in one of those “What’s your favorite Bernie Sanders song?” conversations at a party. Everybody is rattling off hits like “We Shall Overcome” and “The Banks Are Made Of Marble,” and you’re thinking, “Those are the only two I know!” Don’t worry! This should help you out.

“We Shall Overcome” (1987)

The album that put him on the musical map. Just great top to bottom. It speaks to his ability, and we get a sense of exactly who he is and what he’s about. Very rare for a freshman album.

“Bernie Sanders Live” (1988)

Bernie LIVE at the Forum. This release was a brilliant move by Bernie to simmer expectation after such a hot start. He decided to record a live album with everybody’s favorite hits while sprinkling in a few new tracks. Also, some of the best mid-song banter OF ALL TIME! “Bernie” (1989)

Bernie’s true sophomore album fulfilled every bit of expectation. Bernie spends every track on this album taking on race relations and shining a light on topics that nobody was talking about at the time. With tunes to make you get up and get down. I mean the hook in “Institutional Racism Is Real And We’ve Done Little To Stop It” makes you want to jump on your bed and scream, “BERNIE BABY!”

Mainly because his audience knew him to be a soulful musician, NOT an angry Lewis Black-style comic. Look Thinner Instantly

I gained almost fifty pounds with each pregnancy (three, in five years).  I managed to lose the weight within 7 months after the first two, but I’m approaching the two year mark after my third baby, and I’m still 10 pounds over my pre-baby weight.  Even though I lost all the weight the other times, my body was just never the same.  I can tell you now that, without a doubt, it is for sure not the same anymore.

Rather than struggle with fad diets or making myself miserable, I decided that there had to be a better –and easier — way.  I knew that I couldn’t devote as much time to working out or counting calories as I wanted to, what with three kids and all, so I started to experiment with my clothes.  I found that it wasn’t that hard to dress my new body, and I actually loved the new looks!

I knew my ‘smoke and mirrors’ tips would benefit others when I went to a conference in New York last month, and all the other writers said, “But how can you be MrsMuffinTop?!  You don’t even have one!”  Bam!  My son’s pediatrician even commented on how I looked thinner, and I told her how I hadn’t lost a pound since our last visit.  If a doctor can be fooled, you better believe these will work for you!

Check out this two minute video on how to look thinner instantly.  It really is that easy!  Here it is:

Step 1: Color Block Your Way to the Illusion

Step 2: High Waisted Pants Mean No More Muffin Top

Step 3: Ignore the Size and Pay Attention to the Look

Step 4: Undergarments are the Foundation for the Outfit

A Look Inside Banksy’s ‘Dismaland,’ The Bleakest Amusement Park Ever

It’s Disneyland, wrapped in a nightmare.

On Thursday, images and video captured inside “Dismaland,” Banksy’s new art exhibition/dystopian amusement park, began making the rounds on social media. They offer a glimpse into a world that’s predictably dark, bizarre and full of satire.

There’s a statue of Little Mermaid, looking oddly distorted, and a sculpture of Cinderella’s carriage overturned in an accident. The Grim Reaper can be spotted riding in a bumper car, and a killer whale is seen jumping out of a toilet bowl, among other installments.

In an interview with the BBC, Banksy described the so-called “bemusement park” – which also features work from Damien Hirst, Jenny Holzer, Jimmy Cauty and other artists — as a “family theme park unsuitable for children.”

He added that the show, his biggest to date, will require plenty of “audience participation.”

“A dead princess is only complete when surrounded by gawping crowds with their cameras out, or the opportunity to photograph yourself pulling an amazed expression when a killer whale leaps from a toilet,” the enigmatic artist said.

(Story continues below)

Dismaland will be open to the public from August 22 to September 27 in Weston-super-Mare, a seaside town in Somerset, England.

The show is taking place on the site of a former leisure park called Tropicana. The now-derelict building and grounds on the Tropicana site have been closed for 15 years, reports the BBC.

Painfully Close Photos Of Human Faces Look Strangely Inhuman

Glance at a crowd of people from a great enough distance and they’ll cease to even look human, their particular parts fading out of focus until the pack resembles a uniform army of flesh-colored toy soldiers.

Zoom in and you’ll see their hands and hair and the choice of shoes. Keep going and you’ll make out the shapes of their noses, the textures of their faces, the color of their eyes. Keep zooming and the temporary relief of human familiarity is ripped off like a scab, as every tooth, every ear, every pimple, every scar, becomes a singular visual event.

Brooklyn-based photographer Bruce Gilden gets close. So close, in fact, that by gazing upon one of his color portraits you can almost feel hot breath emanating from them, smelling just a bit sour. “You know, I’m photographing people that are not only left behind in most cases, but they’re actually invisible because people don’t want to see them,” Gilden explained in an interview with GUP Magazine.

“I get close because I try to get close to the soul of the people in my pictures,” he added. On the way to the soul, Gilden surely gets a good glimpse of the face, every blemish, wrinkle and pore, turning one of photography’s most tried and true tropes — portraiture — into something unsettling, a little gut-wrenching.

Gilden, who is now 68 years old, has been taking photographs since 1968, when he was a student in college. He’s known for his impulsive style, catching intriguing pedestrians off guard, leaping before them with his camera in one hand and his flash in the other. “Some are taken unawares, some are surprised,” he told PBS. “Some didn’t know what hit them. And I think most people like to be photographed. But since I work in a spontaneous way, I have to be a little bit sneaky because I don’t want them to know that I’m going to take a picture of them.”

Gilden’s series, “Face,” captures the full frontal expressions of people he describes as “underdogs,” those outside the zones of gentrification, not privileged enough to possess the plasticky exterior of the masses. Finding subjects in places from Las Vegas to Des Moines to Milwaukee to West Bromwich, England, Gilden snaps their every quirk and blemish with the authority of a mugshot and the precision of a medical image. Whiteheads bulge with the promise of puss, foundation cakes up like dust gathering on a corpse. What Lucian Freud did to the body Gilden does to the head.

Gilden is not, however, spotlighting his subjects as particularly grotesque aberrations of the human being. He himself identifies with the outsider status of his subjects, and he respects them for it. “I identify with these people in my pictures, because I’m actually photographing myself. The people in my pictures interest me. I like them, and they motivate me.”

Gilden’s portraits may be unforgiving, brutal, ugly, even grotesque. Yet this visceral ugliness isn’t the signal of a monster, but of a human being. One not sanitized and scrubbed clean, buttoned up and plugged in. For Gilden, the ugly is the good stuff, and maybe even lets the soul peer out.

Pregnant Kim Kardashian Rocks The ‘All White Everything’ Look

Kim Kardashian looked gorgeous in a tight dress and light summer jacket paired with criss-cross sandals as she made her way through Los Angeles International Airport Tuesday. The pregnant reality star, who is due later this year, stayed shielded from the paparazzi cameras behind a pair of oversized sunglasses.

Later, the beauty touched down in New Orleans where she was photographed shopping at a boutique in the French Quarter. She also had lunch at Brennan’s with a superfan for the girl’s 21st birthday.

‘Look Of Silence’ Director On How The Film Is Sparking Change In Indonesia

Joshua Oppenheimer‘s 2013 documentary “The Act of Killing“ detailed the Indonesian genocide of the 1960s, which has been estimated to have claimed the lives of about half a million people. Now Oppenheimer is back with a follow-up film called “The Look Of Silence,” which is enabling Indonesians to finally address horrors their country has yet to recover from.

“‘The Look Of Silence’ has, I’m humbled to say, helped catalyze a fundamental transformation in how Indonesians are responding to the genocide and its present day terrible legacy of corruption, fear and violence,” Oppenheimer told HuffPost Live’s Nancy Redd on  Thursday. “It’s helped energize a movement for truth and reconciliation and some form of justice.”

Truth and reconciliation legislation would help bring closure to many Indonesians. But the documentary takes a different approach to exposing the genocide.

“The Look Of Silence” follows one family of survivors’ tragic discovery of how their son was murdered in 1965 and who his killers were. The film documents the family’s youngest son, Adi, as he confronts his brother’s killers. Oppenheimer explained the effect the documentary is having in the country at its center.

“Indonesians through the film are acknowledging how torn the social fabric of the country is, and how urgently truth and reconciliation are needed,” Oppenheimer said. “And the government, in response to this debate the film has raised, has now introduced a truth and reconciliation bill. Woefully inadequate, but a tremendous start in a way.”

Watch Oppenheimer discuss his moving documentary in the video above, and click here to watch his full HuffPost Live conversation.

This Is What 13 Women Look Like When They Orgasm

One woman is depicting female sexuality in its most honest, natural state.

Lauren Crow, a photographer based out of Portland, Oregon, photographed women while they were masturbating to show what female pleasure really looks like. Instead of depicting the common cultural assumption that women’s pleasure is solely for the consumption of men — so often seen in movies and porn – Crow is illustrating real women having real orgasms.

“In a patriarchal society, women are flooded with information on how to be and how to look in order to please others, namely men,” Crow wrote on her website. “In terms of female pleasure, we are rarely shown what it really looks like.”

Far too often, popular representations of sex hide female sexuality, either by highlighting only male pleasure or illustrating flawed depictions of female orgasms. These depictions can lead to a distorted perception of female pleasure, for women themselves and their partners. Crow hopes to change that by revealing messy, sweaty and honest images of women climaxing.

“I think honest depictions of female sexuality and pleasure is important because every female-identified person has enough issues with media telling her she is wrong or not good enough,” Crow said.

Crow wants to empower all women to understand that pleasure is pleasure — and you don’t need to look gorgeous to feel it. “We need more media telling us we are beautiful, unique and wonderful and that there is no wrong way to look while enjoying yourself,” Crow told The Huffington Post.

Scroll below to see 14 images of the beautiful, disheveled and real depictions of women orgasming.

Head over to Crow’s website to see more of her work.

If Princess Charlotte’s lacy gown looks familiar, it’s because you’ve seen it before: Prince George wore the same garment on his big day in October 2013.

For the same event with George, Kate picked another light cream-colored Alexander McQueen dress and Jane Taylor hat that complemented the babe’s gown much like today’s does.

Come see all the details about the royal family’s big day.

A Tradition of Purple: An Inside Look at the Minnesota Vikings Paperback Book

Bosom-Boosting Bikinis: 5 Key Features to Look For When Shopping for Swimwear

When you’re stripped down to a bikini, it’s hard to hide much of anything. The pads, cutlets, and other little tricks ordinarily deployed to give a bust some boost pose a big challenge when a dip in the pool or the ocean seems imminent. But all hope is not lost! Certain cuts and embellishments can make your bosom look a little curvier.

bikini-bathing-suit-swimsuit-stocksy

Here are five key things to look for:

Structure: A formed-cup suit will help give breasts shape and a little bit of extra size (many options will also include some padding). If you know your day is only going to involve lounging and staying firmly on dry land, this style can easily be modified with the same silicone cutlets used for extra push-up in a bra.

Ruffles and frills: Fringe, curtains, and tiered material all add excess fabric and dimension, a plus when you want to fake a little bit of size (conversely, if you’re looking for a slimming anything, the first thing to go should be embellishment). Along with adding extra mass, the details serve as a distraction to slimness up top.

asos-pink-white-flower-bikini

A low-cut French style: Experts agree this style, with skinny straps attached like a traditional bra, is often the most flattering on small chests. Cuts can vary, but the spacing of the straps allows for the scoop to go super low, a dangerous dip for busty women, but perfect for making the most of smaller cup sizes.

A center tie: Whether it’s an ornamental bow or a design switcheroo, having ties that can be tightened at the center will help pull breasts closer together, creating cleavage. The opportunity to personalize the fit is also paramount for women with smaller rib cages.

A true string bikini: The trusty pick is a good one, since the moveable triangle pieces can easily be slid to the outer side of the torso, exposing your curves wherever they may be. The option to adjust to your bod is wise since a top with anchored pieces can often read as oversized on a small chest.

If You Look Hard Enough, Vaginas Are Everywhere

“I think that all pussies are perfect, in being un-perfect… My pussy, your pussy, everybody’s pussy is f**king perfect.”

That’s how Chelsea Jones responded when Bullett Media asked her to describe the perfect pussy. Amen, sister.

Jones and her friend Eva Sealove aren’t usually asked by media outlets to describe their idea of the “perfect pussy” — well, until recently. About nine months ago, the two L.A. natives created an Instagram account called “Look At This Pusssy,” which curates images of objects and sceneries that look like vaginas.

In less than a year, the account has accumulated over 5,500 followers. Censoring anatomy can have a stigmatizing effect, as if something must be hidden because of the way it looks. From t-shirts to different kinds of food and even tree trunks, the images on Jones’ and Sealove’s Instagram account prove that vaginas can be found anywhere and everywhere.

Jaunty af literally all day @cjkut

A photo posted by look at this pussy (@look_at_this_pusssy) on

Although the images may be a bit NSFW, the two say they created the account to remind everyone that vaginas come in all shapes, sizes and colors. And each vagina is perfect.

By posting different images of objects that look like vaginas, Sealove and Jones hope to normalize attitudes towards vaginas and all the shapes and sizes they come in. The two post images they’ve taken and also accept submissions.

“I wanted to create a space where people can feel like ‘it’s normal to feel like this’ or ‘it’s normal that I look like this,'” Jones told Bullett. “Everything is a pussy and everything about a pussy is beautiful. I don’t want anyone to ever feel shame about that and this is sort of a way for us to drive home that message, and be funny with it too.”

Jones said that she and Sealove want to empower women with “Look At This Pusssy,” and they love that some of their followers are teenage girls. “To me, I don’t think there’s anything vulgar about our account because our message is anti-shame and acceptance of your own body,” Sealove said. “It makes me really emotional to see girls at that age respond to our content. It’s really hopeful to me, because of how hard it is to grow up as a female and come into your own.”

Take a look at a few (semi-NSFW) images from Sealove’s and Jones’ “Look At This Pusssy” account that look very similar to vaginas.

Furiosa Of ‘Mad Max’ Can Even Make Tampon Commercials Look Badass

“The only blood I shed is my enemy’s.”

If that declaration from Imperator Furiosa isn’t a ringing endorsement for tampons, we’re not sure what is.

In two parody commercials featuring Furiosa from “Mad Max: Glory Road,” actress and comedian Whitney Rice teamed up with writer and director Doug Hurley to give a glimpse into a world where the ass-kicking warrior has the perfect side gig.

“The inspiration for the video came after watching ‘Mad Max’ and thinking, ‘Huh, I wonder what products will jump on the Mad Max bandwagon?'” Rice told Bustle. “‘Probably feminine products — oh, that would make a hilarious series of commercials.'”

Using movies to promote products is no novel idea. The “Iron Man” franchise maintains a relationship with LG Electronics, and advertisements for shaving products recently drew inspiration from “Pitch Perfect 2” to sell razors.

Rice takes the blurred lines between business and entertainment to the next level with her spot-on parodies.

In the first spot above, Furiosa (played by Rice) effortlessly takes down her foes while promoting the strength of a particular type of tampon.

The second commercial advertises CoverGirl mascara, a product that’s always there for her when Furiosa wants some long lashes — and when she needs to touch up her fierce grease-smeared look.

Furiosa: a badass shero and our new favorite spokesperson.

In honor of Menstrual Hygiene Day on May 28, WaterAid, a British organization that brings clean water, sanitation and hygiene to impoverished parts of the world, launched a new campaign called “If Men Had Periods.” As part of the campaign, they created two parodies reimagining the typical tampon commercials if dudes got their periods.

While the parodies have a lighter tone, the campaign hopes to highlight the 1.25 billion women who don’t have access to a toilet during their periods and the stigma women experience during their menstrual cycles.

“Men would brag about them on Facebook, #imonmyperiod would probably trend regularly on Twitter, and tampon adverts would be fronted by celebrities.”

“Every day 800 million women have their period, and yet most of us consider it an embarrassing and taboo subject,” WaterAid’s Chief Executive Officer Barbara Frost said in a press release. “There are even elaborate euphemisms to avoid saying the word ‘period.’ So we have had a bit of fun trying to imagine whether attitudes would be different if men had periods.”

WaterAid believes the universe would be a lot different if men had to experience a monthly period. “If men had periods it would be considered a sign of virility,” a WaterAid press release reads. “Men would brag about them on Facebook, #imonmyperiod would probably trend regularly on Twitter, and tampon adverts would be fronted by celebrities.”

WaterAid surveyed 2,000 people to find out what they thought the world would look like if men had their periods. Almost 80 percent of respondents thought the sports world would change if men had their periodS. Nearly 30 percent of people believed sports commentators would openly discuss how player’s menstrual cycles would affect performance.

Basically, if men had periods there would be nothing shameful about menstrual cycles.

“Menstruation is an important women’s issue. One in three women around the world do not have access to a toilet during their periods and having to find a safe place after dark is both undignified and risky,” Frost said. “Millions more suffer discrimination because of beliefs that they are ‘contaminated’ or ‘impure.’ Stigma about menstruation means women do not seek the help and information they need, while the lack of hygiene facilities in schools is a major reason for young girls dropping out of education when they reach puberty.”

In order to stop this stigma, WaterAid is encouraging people to sign their “Make It Happen” petition to help get everyone access to clean water and toilets around the world.

“Female representation in politics in many parts of the world is still low, so perhaps if men had periods this issue would get the attention that it deserves,” Frost said. “More needs to be done to ‘make it happen’ so that every women and girl has access to water, sanitation and hygiene by 2030.”

Rumer Willis and Demi Moore Look Exactly Alike in These Matching Outfits

The world’s gotten to see a whole lot more of Rumer Willis ever since her big turn (and win!) on Dancing With the Stars. And if anyone needed convincing that she looks a lot like famous mom Demi Moore, she posted an Instagram over the long weekend that’s going to leave you kind of speechless.

That moment when you realize you actually are becoming your mother #twinning #imnotmad

A photo posted by Rumer Willis (@ruelarue) on

Hello, twinning! Mom and daughter rocked identical black jumpsuits with similar-looking glasses (and both women have hair that’s about the same length). It made for a pretty amazing photo op, but there could be science at play too—psychologists have studied fashion mirroring in teens and found that adopting similar style has to do with identifying who we’d like to be and working toward it. Fascinating, huh?

Grief and the Veteran: An Inside Look

On Memorial Day, we take pause to remember and pay tribute to those Americans who died in active military service. Earlier this month I took the opportunity to address a dedicated group of psychotherapists who generously donate their time to provide pro bono counseling to veterans through a program called The Soldiers Project. I was moved and inspired by the warmth and caring these therapists displayed as they spoke of the men and women who have served our country and returned from a tour of duty in need of a listening ear.

The complicated psychological issues facing veterans usually lead mental health professionals to consider three common diagnoses: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Anxiety, and Major Depression. For PTSD we address the nightmares, flashbacks, and startle responses. For anxiety we teach relaxation techniques. For depression we teach methods for stopping negative thoughts.

I then posed the question: “What about the grief that the veterans may be carrying but not mentioning?”

As is often the case in society in general, there was acknowledgement that grief is often overlooked or ignored among those serving in the armed forces. After all, people in the military are taught to “be brave”, “buck up,” or not let their emotions show. I offered several scenarios for consideration.

Scenario #1: The soldier who received a letter informing him that his best friend from high school died. He was unable to have time off to attend memorial services and thus he was deprived of the opportunity to laugh, cry, and reminisce with his friends back home. His buddies in Afghanistan didn’t know the one who died and it felt awkward to talk to them about his sorrow. By the time he returned home to family and friends, no one asked about his grief.

Scenario #2: The veteran who flew home the midst of her tour of duty because her father (who had served in Vietnam) was dying. While she knew in her heart how proud he was that she was serving her country, there could be no conversation about that now as her father lay in the hospital unconscious. She was grateful to able to spend her father’s last few hours at his bedside and remain at home for the funeral but she had to fly out that afternoon. Her longing to have just one more conversation with her dad left her feeling lost and abandoned.

Scenario #3: The couple that met while on a tour of duty and whose plans for marriage will never come to fruition because the bride-to-be died in Iraq. When the day arrives that would have been their wedding day, he is too numb and embarrassed to tell anyone.

One of the highlights of the workshop was when a veteran in attendance offered to participate in a mock psychotherapy session. As we spoke together, this courageous man shared memories of two of his buddies who died in combat using phrases like: “Why did I make it and they didn’t?” “I missed the funeral and memorial rituals, I guess it’s too late now.”

Through our conversation I validated Mark’s feelings and the fact that grief doesn’t just disappear over time. How being able to express long-bottled-up grief has great value. How it is never too late to create a memorial ritual. And before our session ended Mark had decided to go home and write letters in his journal to his two buddies, telling them what he wishes he could say to them now.

If you or someone you know have experienced a death, please take the time you need to process your grief. To all those who have served our country or who are remembering a Veteran, may Memorial Day bring some measure of peace and calm to your heart.

What Tabloid Headlines Would Look Like Without The Sexism

Magazine tabloids tend to treat women like zoo animals instead of people.

Created by college students Erin Valentine and Ashley McGetrick, a new project called “Breaking News: Deconstructing Entertainment Journalism” highlights the rampant sexism in entertainment media by revealing what headlines would look like if tabloids treated female celebrities like real people.

kourtney

The two seniors at Elon University created the project for their capstone course on women and gender in the media.

“By translating these headlines to be more feminist-friendly, we hoped to call out sexist and unequal cultural influences, especially of celebrities, in the media,” Valentine told The Huffington Post. “Sensationalized tabloid media preys on the female body and an idealized version of ‘womanhood.'”

Headlines involving female celebrities are notorious for objectifying women, Valentine said. From shaming women who go makeup-free to criticizing women for wearing gym clothes, tabloids subject women to a lot of sexism that men rarely experience.

“Whether in line at the grocery store, scrolling through Facebook or flipping through television channels, it is hard to miss headlines worshiping, critiquing or questioning the physiques and lifestyles of female public figures,” Valentine said. “While seemingly harmless, these hyped up headlines attack more than just the people pictured.”

It’s not only the headlines that are implicitly sexist, but the stories written about these female celebrities. Instead of writing about how hard-working Blake Lively is when she attends dozens of events in one day, stories are written about how many outfits she wore.

Valentine noted that consumers do have an impact on these headlines. “They should also acknowledge that they have the power to push back as viewers and as the audience to encourage more feminist-friendly entertainment journalism,” she said.

Check out some of Valentine’s and McGetrick’s feminist-friendly headlines below.

Watch What Happens When This Young Couple Sees What They Will Look Like In 70 Years

SPECIAL FROM Next Avenue

By Sue Campbell

If you haven’t yet seen the viral video showing a couple in their 20s get transformed by makeup artists to look age 50, 70 and 90, take five minutes to watch it (below). The video will make you think about sterotypes of aging and also about what it means to grow old with a partner.

It centers on Kristie and Tavis, who are to be married in a month. They’ve agreed to this experiement and are eager to share it with their families. “My mom thinks this is the coolest thing ever,” Kristie says. “She said, ‘What a treat for us because we’ll probably be gone when you’re that age, so we’ll get to see what you would maybe look like.”

The makeup artists get to work, and when the couple hits 50, Tavis is delighted by Kristie’s looks. They expect, they say, that they’ll be living a sterotypical kind of life, raising teenagers and joining the PTA. At 70, they turn a bit emotional. “I can’t help but think about what the potential last 50 years would hold,” Tavis says. “To see her look like this makes me think of where we have gone, what would have happened in between.”

To see a young couple ponder time’s passing, believe the years will keep them together and accept one another’s aging faces with love reveals the commitment they feel. It’s sweet and tender to watch.

At 90, they weep. The pair instinctively grasps that there’s deep comfort to be found in long relationships. They talk about what their last words to each other would be. “I would want to make sure he knew how much I love him and how important he’s been to me,” Kristie says. “I’m a better person because of you,” Tavis says.

‘According To My Mother’ Takes A Comedic Look At LGBT Acceptance And Cultural Differences

Like a lot of queer people, Daniel K. Isaac has a complicated relationship with his mother, Esther.

Esther is a devoutly religious Korean-American who doesn’t approve of her son’s sexuality — and she isn’t shy about telling him so. For a long time, Isaac grappled with how to deal with his mother’s disapproval and constant comments about his sexuality. But then friends made him realize something powerful — the way his mother communicated her feelings about his life and sexuality are actually hilarious.

Like…

daniel

And…

daniel

They’re so funny, in fact, that Daniel created a hashtag, #AccordingToMyMother, which became a viral Internet sensation. This happened not only because of the comedic nature of their communication, but because of the visible exploration of the love between a mother and child, despite the way that cultural and religious differences can serve as a wedge in their relationships.

Now, Isaac plans to turn the #AccordingToMyMother sensation into a film, funded through a Kickstarter campaign. While his mother is embarrassed by the online attention she has received, especially with her living in California and Daniel in New York, she is fully supportive of the film and embraces the idea that art can be therapeutic.

The Huffington Post spoke with Isaac this week about why he decided to start sharing his relationship with his mom with the public, and what he hopes can be achieved achieve through this film.

isaac

The Huffington Post: What made you want to start sharing your mom’s quotes?
Daniel K. Isaac: Living on opposite sides of the country, the main form of communication my mom and I have is by phone. In order to limit the duration of these conversations, I often call my mom on my way to something: the subway station, work, rehearsal, or home. On many occasions, I would arrive at a destination while finishing up a call in front of my friends or castmates or coworkers and they would ask why I was in whatever emotional state my mother had put me in. I would recount the conversation, and rather than finding empathy or compassion for my plight, I would be met with laughter or utter shock and disbelief. It took an outsider’s perspective for me to realize how ridiculous or absurd and downright comical my mom sounded. When I learned to observe the hilarity rather than the negative arguments themselves, I didn’t mind calling my mom as much. In fact, I looked forward to it. I realized maybe other people would enjoy hearing about this too and see how a different perspective can radically change a relationship dynamic. So I took to Facebook and received more “likes” on those snippets of conversations than I ever did on a new profile picture. And that led to a Tumblr and an Instagram account and now a movie!

isaac

HP: What has the reaction been like?
I can no longer have a “mom-free” conversation. Instead of being introduced as Daniel the actor, I now hear, “You should add Daniel as a Facebook friend so you can read more about his mom.” People I haven’t spoken to in years will share embarrassing and intimate details about their family and their parental relationships or how they have been meaning to start their own hashtag or blog for “According To My Southern Mother” or “Sh*t My German Mom Says.”

I have a handful of friends and old acquaintances who are reticent to express their support. I’ve been told #accordingtomymother is improper. Or I am airing my dirty laundry. Or disrespecting my elders. Or dishonoring a familial bond or parent-child confidentiality (is that a thing?). I counter these points with stories about friends/acquaintances/strangers who tell me about their idiosyncratic families, who share potentially traumatic anecdotes for the first time, who are given permission and a platform to express their personal experiences and how they empathize with their own family backgrounds. And that makes it worth it — to at least help start the conversation.

daniel

What do you think your relationship with your mom can show us about understanding and love between people who maybe don’t see eye to eye?
When my mom disowned me for being gay, it was my freshman year of college. I remember going to the Financial Aid Office to consider my options as a suddenly-and-unexpectedly financially-independent 16-year-old, and they had me fill out some surprisingly simple paperwork and register for ten sessions of therapy. The therapist I was assigned ended up being the best thing to come from the Financial Aid Office — of all places! He really helped me find a new way to approach my relationship with my mother.

He said I could be “White,” “Black” or “Gray.” “White” meant I could go back in the closet as my mom hoped and prayed and return to the church and fight this “sin” and have the old relationship I had with my mother. “Black” meant resuming our silence, letting the rift grow larger and learning to live without a relationship with my mother because neither of us was going to change. I was always going to be gay. She was always going to believe that homosexuality was a choice and a sin. Or I could try to find the “Gray.” He highlighted the fact that my mother was a single parent and I was an only child and that our relationship, while incredibly messy, was important to each of us. And perhaps we could find a gray area in which I would accept the likelihood that she was never going to change her belief system, but I would learn to have compassion in the face of her homophobia, or ignore her ignorance, and let her words that were meant to hurt just go through one ear and out the other. Love by example, even when it may never be reciprocated in the same fashion. Am I always successful at this? No. I mean, I find a weird form of catharsis by writing about it and sharing it with the world. But I think the intention is pure. And maybe if we found the gray area in our extreme points of view a little bit more, then maybe we could have a little more understanding in the world. A little more love.

What’s the one thing you want people to take away from your experience?
I think by writing #accordingtomymother, I’ve learned the importance of trying to find laughter and comedy when there’s seemingly none to be found. I think humor is part of my healing and coping process and I hope to be able to share that with these posts and with this movie. I hope that, past the hilarity and the absurdity of it all, you can see one guy’s “resilience,” which sounds like too strong a word, but basically this is how I work with the cards I’ve been dealt and maybe that can help someone else through their own journey.

Oh, and, call your mom.

Hangout Snapshot: Get a Closer Look at Zella Day

This spot the next several days will feature upcoming artists who were performing at the 2015 Hangout festival in Gulf Shores, Alabama, from May 15-17.

It kicks off with Zella Day, a 20-year-old singer-songwriter from Pinetop, Arizona, who now resides in Los Angeles. Her debut album, Kicker, will be released June 2 on Pinetop Records/ Hollywood Records.

Zella Day selfieJust a short walk from the beach, Day stopped by to chat and provide some up close-and-personal information (and even took a selfie, left) in this quick-hitting Q&A before her set on the Palladia Stage on May 15:

Claim to fame: What got you here?
ZD: My record that I’m releasing June 2. I released an EP last year in October. And it’s just been a slow build. So my music got’s me here.

Beach essential: Shades, swimsuit or volleyball?
ZD: Swimsuit, because I need a tan more than anybody here probably. (laughs) My whole body’s covered up for a reason.

Secret you’re finally well-adjusted enough to share?
ZD: I have a whole record full of them. They’re going to be coming out on June 2. All of the dirty laundry aired.

Where do you go from here (literally or figuratively)?
ZD: Well, I go home tomorrow. And I’m a week at home. I just got done with a month and a half of touring. And I’ve got more festivals and then some headlining shows. I’m just kind of adjusting myself to the new pace of life for me.

Shore thing in Gulf Shores (what’s on top of your to-do list)?
ZD: Well, I’m going to spending my time at the festival, obviously, so I’m going to be seeing Foo Fighters later. Probably get me a swimsuit and go see the Foo Fighters.

Zella Day 1

You’re on the clock to make an Unabashedly Shameless Plug for 10 seconds: Go!
ZD: So I’ve got my new record coming out June 2. It’s called Kicker. I’m playing a headlining show at the Troubadour in L.A. for the record release on June 3. So if you can make it, make it out there. And besides that, just listen to my music. I’m releasing a lot of it, and music videos. I’m working really hard right now. So, hopefully, it’s gonna connect.

What’s the inside story behind your name?
ZD: Zella is from the 1840s. My parents got married in Jerome, Arizona. And when they were getting married, they were looking for baby names. And there was a book of the town’s history in Jerome, and they were scouting locations for the wedding. And they just walked into a museum and they were looking through this book. And one of the main coal miner’s wives was named Zella — 1842. There’s actually a song on the record called “Jerome.” That’s about the ghostly woman behind my name.

What’s your biggest fear about the water?
ZD: Being held under. I don’t like feeling like I can’t make it to the top.

Flip-flops, sneakers or Crocs?
ZD: (laughs) Well, Crocs are best of both worlds. So Crocs for sure.

Surf, paddleboard, para-sail, deep-sea fishing or snorkeling?
ZD: It would have to be between snorkeling and surfing. Because I really like both. I live in L.A. and I lived in Long Beach before. I’m from Arizona but I grew up snowboarding. So when I moved to California, surfing was just kind of a natural transition. So I’ve been out in the water a bit. But then I also love snorkeling. I’ve been to Indonesia, snorkeled in Indo. They’re both really fun.

Your greatest athletic feat?
ZD: I went to Spain and played in the Donosti Cup for soccer. I was 14 and I was really serious about soccer. And we actually won second place. So I went to Europe, played soccer on the Arizona state team. And I broke my ankle shortly after that, so that kind of ended my soccer career.

What do you have that Skrillex and Diplo don’t?
ZD: (laughs) A guitar?

If you could do to dinner and a movie with another Hangout performer this weekend, who would it be, what would you see and why?
ZD: Well, I’m sharing a trailer with Jenny Lewis. And so I feel like she’d be kind of fun to eat shrimp cocktail with and maybe go see a film. I don’t know what film we would go see. I don’t even know what’s out in theaters right now. I’ve been on the road too much. I’ve been really into Pulp Fiction and Natural Born Killers. So maybe we would eat shrimp cocktail and watch Natural Born Killers on the beach. Me and Jenny Lewis.

Along with Zella Day, Day 1 of Hangout featured a number of terrific performances dominated by women with a fashion flair. Here’s a look at some of the best:

There is such a thing as too many inspirational quotes. We’re talking about the scores of quote photos that your most annoying Facebook and Instagram friends incessantly post. At some point, you have to stop being inspired and go out and do that thing you’re inspired to do, right?

That being said, we’re not sure they’re all that effective anyway. If these quotes were being more honest, people would probably hesitate to share them as much. And we’re all for that.*

Fubarnomics: A Lighthearted, Serious Look At America's Economic Ills

Fubarnomics: A Lighthearted, Serious Look At America's Economic Ills

FUBAR, an acronym stemming from World War II GI slang, means fouled up (or some other F word) beyond all recognition. To the author, fubarnomics perfectly captures the sorry state of our economy today. In this witty, informative, and nonpartisan overview of contemporary economic ills, Wright takes a fresh approach to public policy by finding fault with both the government and the market, and with both Democrats and Republicans. The author convincingly shows that major economic trouble has almost always been the result of a hybrid failure, a combination of both bad policy making and marketplace deficiencies. He examines contemporary and historical examples of FUBAR across a wide spectrum, from mainstay social institutions such as higher education to cataclysmic national upheavals such as the Great Depression. In analyzing our most current crises, he offers unique insights into the recent crippling recession, including the subprime mortgage meltdown, as well as the looming healthcare crisis, and the perennial problem of social security. Beyond identifying the major problem areas, the author also offers practical solutions. From creating combined life-healthcare insurance policies and divorcing healthcare from employers, to government education subsidies for students only, and using long-term bonds to pay for private insurance that mimics social security, his suggestions are provocative and creative, and may just solve some of the thorniest problems facing us today.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Since — as they say — a picture’s worth a thousand words, we’d like to pay homage to every mom with a collection of artworks that put mothers on parade. Among some of our favorite women athletes featured in the ads are former WNBA players Lisa Leslie and Sheryl Swoopes, as well as women’s soccer legend, Mia Hamm.

Pencil Drawings – A Look Into the Art of David J. Vanderpool

Pencil Drawings – A Look Into the Art of David J. Vanderpool

Starting off with the artist’s top winning pencil drawings from 2010 through 2012, this autobiography style book allows the reader an opportunity to not only learn the process it took to complete most of his drawings (created between 2008-2013) which are shown within these pages, but offers a personal look into who the artist is as a man. From portraits to figure drawings, David J. Vanderpool shares how simple pencil lines can be used to create masterfully crafted drawings – all while working through obstacles he would later encounter as an artist. Proving that art isn’t always about who the artist is, but rather who catches his attention at that moment. Closing with several fan-favorite drawings from his other top selling books, this book offers his most completed works to date. VIEWER DISCRETION IS ADVISED: This book contains adult male nudity. NOTICE: This book is not a “how-to book” but rather as one review noted, “An Art Exhibit And Fan Book.” The inside pages are not glossy.

Foods That Look Like Genitalia

Recently, I received an email about foods that resemble body parts, and how eating them will benefit said body parts. Some items on the list were walnuts, kidney beans, tomatoes, and carrots.

Walnuts look like human brains, so the theory is it will make us smarter. Kidney beans, funnily enough, look like our kidneys, so eat up if you want to keep your filtration system clean. Tomatoes are red and have four chambers, just like our hearts! Carrots — and this is a stretch — when cut in circles, look like our eyes.

I’m a believer in natural foods, and limiting processed junk food in our diets, so I think that there may be something to this theory. So much so, that I did a little more digging, and ended up with my own list: Foods That Resemble Genitalia. Whether you’re single, married or in a relationship, this food list is for you! Just tailor it to suit your needs. Don’t forget to read the descriptions!

Did I miss anything? What foods remind you of sensual body parts?

Heels Giving You the Pinch? Charlotte Dellal Shows How to Dress Up Your Flats and Still Look Festive!

the-coveteur

We all love how heels look, but sometimes, no matter how much we hate admitting it, they pinch. As a designer and mother, Charlotte Dellal, designer of her namesake label Charlotte Olympia, loves heels with all her heart but definitely sees flats as a sartorial necessity. She creates for the modern woman’s wardrobe, telling us, “being at work full time and a mother of three, I like to design flats that can be dressed up or dressed down; whether I am at the office, in a meeting, picking up my boys from school, or running around after them in the park.” Moreover, Charlotte draws inspiration from her own life and says, “I love to give my collections a soul and a story. I love collecting beautiful things and I translate this by transforming everyday objects into something wearable.”

Though originally known for her sky-high heels (and we really do mean sky-high!), Charlotte introduced her first Kitty flats with her fall 2011 “To Die For” collection (inspired by the Agatha Christie novels of the 1930s) and they have been a staple ever since. Initially, Charlotte tells us, “The idea was to create a shoe inspired by a men’s smoking slipper as typically worn in those days. I wanted to make it more feminine and flirty like a cat; I turned the traditionally high-cut vamp into ears and replaced the classic embroidered monogram with a feline face. The ‘Kitty’ is now a signature style and returns each season updated to suit the mood of the collection.” She has even recently come out with a Kitty & Co Collection, giving each cat-inspired flat a unique expression and personality.

charlotte-olympia

As a Kitty flats lover, Charlotte appreciates the necessity for flats to be dressed up or down and tries to translate that into the designs of her iconic flats. Though her favorites are the classic red leopard Bisoux style flats, claiming, “I am never without red lips or leopard print, so [these] shoes are everything I love wrapped into one!” Charlotte also sings the praises of a classic black flat, telling us, “my black velvet signature Kitty flats are very easy to wear, they look equally good with jeans or with a little dress.” And we couldn’t agree more!

Can’t wait to click your heels together and be instantly transported to Charlotte’s world? Shop some of our current favorites among the iconic Kitty flats below!

In The Wake Of ‘The Interview,’ A Brief Look At America’s Film Censorship Through The Years

As we’re bombarded with developments surrounding Sony Pictures’ decision to cancel the release of “The Interview” in the wake of terrorism threats, we’re reminded of America’s long history with film censorship — one that, thankfully, doesn’t often rear its head anymore. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s comedy stars Rogen and James Franco as journalists ordered to assassinate North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un after landing a rare interview with him. It’s an (almost) unheard-of case of executives electing to pull a movie; historically, it took a court order to strong-arm studios into cutting their losses over a controversial project. This is, after all, an entertainment industry that operated under the Motion Picture Production Code (aka the Hays Code), which regulated what could be seen onscreen from 1930 to 1968. That set of regulations brought about an onslaught of imbroglios over what did and didn’t violate standards. We’ve compiled a list of several movies that act as precursors to the censorship questions being raised with the “Interview” controversy. It only skims the surface of film restrictions in American history, but it’ll give you an idea of some of the battles filmmakers and distributors have faced over the years.

Amal Clooney’s Got a Hippie-Chic Date Night Look For You to Try

How happy are you that we got to meet Amal Clooney this year? She had pretty fantastic style when she was Miss Alamuddin and it’s just gotten better from there, hardly a surprise when her first outing as Mrs. Clooney was in this couture creation. The style train shows no signs of stopping, either, and her latest date night with hubby George was in an outfit so much cooler than your standard LBD.

amal-clooney-fringed-jacket-date-night-2014

She’s channeling so much Nicole Richie boho-chic here, almost as if she’d read my interview with Nic when she suggested every girl try a floaty bed jacket. Amal’s was fringed, a majorly trending accent, and has those richly colored designs on them that almost appear to be a burnt-out velvet. To make the statement topper work, she kept her basics really simple: jeans and a black tank. And because it is date night, she pulled on a pair of sexy cut-out heels.

What’s your date night dressing M.O.? In the winter I like jeans, high boots, and a top with one extra button undone.

We Got Our First Look at Keira Knightley’s Pregnancy Style!

Along with all the happiness that surrounds the announcement of a future baby, fashion lovers get the added excitement of checking out what the mom-to-be wears. Keira Knightley is the latest celebrity with baby news to share (Vogue UK has reported her rep’s officially confirmed the announcement, FYI), and, as such, it officially becomes time to start studying her outfit picks with a new lens.

keira-knightley-dress-british-independent-film-awards-2014

For the British Independent Film Awards last week, she picked this sparkly Simone Rocha dress. Her bump’s currently too small to dress in the super-curvy fashion Blake Lively favors, but she doesn’t often wear body-con numbers, so I’ll never expect that from her. With the extra volume (and feathers) at the sides of this pick, attention is diverted from her midsection, something a lot of pregnant women tend to want in earlier months when the baby weight gain isn’t a completely obvious pregnant tummy.

keira-knightley-pregnant-overalls-converse

For casual errands in November, she skipped skinny jeans in favor of roomy overalls (totally a trend—pregnant Jessica Biel just did it, too!). As a non-pregnant person who’s worn overalls, I completely understand why both ladies would pick them for their just-revealed, tiny tummies: They offer some extra space and don’t cut in the way a traditional pair of jeans would at the waistband area.

I’m predicting we’ll see Keira’s signature retro-feminine style throughout her pregnancy, though nipped-waist dresses will probably give way to loose shifts and maxis. What do you think?

This Is The Mathematical Reason All Hipsters Look The Same

Hipsters are a strange, plaid-wearing paradox: the term is meant to denote someone who’s different from the norm, and yet, why do they — in their flannel, beanies and combat boots — all seem to look exactly alike?

Jonathan Touboul, a mathematical neuroscientist at the Collège de France in Paris, explores this question in a new paper, “The Hipster Effect: When Anticonformists All Look the Same.”

hipster

In the study, Touboul uses many complex mathematical formulas to explain the homogenous hipster phenomenon. (It’s tricky stuff, and “a background in nonlinear dynamics certainly helps,” notes the Washington Post’s Jeff Guo.)

But, essentially, Touboul concludes that when humans analyze mainstream trends, there’s a delay in how quickly they detect those trends — and if the delay is long enough, people who seek to oppose the mainstream trends will end up opposing them in the same way.

“If you take large sets of interacting individuals — whether hipsters, stock traders or any group that decides to go against the majority — by trying to be different, they will ultimately all do the same thing at the same time,” Touboul told Vocativ. “The reason for that is the time it takes for an individual to register the decisions of others. You cannot be aware of what other people decide in real time, it takes a little while.”

Touboul also concludes that hipsters’ ability to recognize the trends of other hipsters is proportional to their distance from one another.

“Synchronization among hipsters depends on the distribution, in space, of each individuals,” Trouboul writes.

In other words, when you throw on your skinny jeans and oversized glasses in the privacy of your apartment you share with your preppy roommate, you feel totally original — but once you get to your local artisan coffee shop, there’s a high chance your Warby Parker frames will match those of the hipster sipping a latte next to you.

There is, however, one major drawback to the study, the Washington Post reports:

Here is where you might object that Touboul’s model oversimplifies something. In real life, there are a million ways to be nonconformist. You can be goth; you can be preppy; you can be grunge. Touboul’s model doesn’t quite explain the current hipster obsession with scraggly beards and undercuts. He admits as much. “The brain is more complex than the model I looked at, and of course hipsters are more complex,” he said.

Of course they are. All of them, at once.

Read the entirety of Touboul’s study to learn more.

New Look At Leonardo da Vinci Masterpiece Shows Even Geniuses Second-Guess Themselves

Leonardo da Vinci may have been called a genius, but that doesn’t mean he never second-guessed himself.

In a new book, optical engineer Pascal Cotte explains how a new imaging technology known as the layer amplification method (LAM) helped show that Leonardo painted two previous versions of his “Lady with an Ermine” masterpiece before settling on the version that we know today. One version of the 15th Century artwork didn’t even include the ermine at all.

“We’ve discovered that Leonardo is always changing his mind,” Cotte, CTO of the Lumiere Technology company in Paris, told BBC News. “This is someone who hesitates — he erases things, he adds things, he changes his mind again and again… The LAM technique gives us the capability to peel the painting like an onion, removing the surface to see what’s happening inside and behind the different layers of paint.”

pascal cotte
The three phases of Leonardo da Vinci’s “Lady with an Ermine” painting. Leonardo first painted the portrait without the ermine, and later added in two different versions of the animal. Credit: © Pascal Cotte

The LAM technique involves using the reflection of light to reveal images in different layers of paint, according to a statement from the company.

“It tells us a lot more about the way Leonardo’s mind worked when he was doing a painting,” Martin Kemp, emeritus professor of the history of art at the University of Oxford, told BBC News. “We know that he fiddled around a good deal at the beginning, but now we know that he kept fiddling around all the time and it helps explain why he had so much difficulty finishing paintings.”

As for the woman depicted in the painting, experts have long believed it to be Cecilia Gallerani, who was the mistress of Ludovico Sforza, the Duke of Milan. According to the Wall Street Journal, just before this portrait was painted, Sforza was awarded the insignia of the Order of the Ermine by the King of Naples, becoming known as “l’Ermellino.” Scholars believe the ermine symbolizes the Duke, or serves as a visual pun on Cecilia’s surname (ermine in Greek is galay.)

Cotte’s book, “Lumiere on the Lady with an Ermine,” was published on Sept. 1 and is available on Amazon.

It’s no secret that the street harassment women are subjected to is invasive, ridiculous and, often times, downright bizarre — and it’s only more apparent when the gender roles are swapped.

In the Buzzfeed video “If Women Catcalled Men” published on Sept. 28, we see what life would be like if women made up the majority of street harassers and men were the victims.

The gender-swapped parody is a comedic reminder that street harassment is not only scary, but often times simply ridiculous. The catcalling in the video is definitely different than real-life street harassment with women yelling “Ay baby, I bet you’d let me choose what to do with my own body,” to “Bet those arms could put together my IKEA furniture,” at random men on the street.

The video ends with a variation on a more vulgar line that most women will recognize: “How do you fit all that d*ck in your jeans?!” Yea, that (sadly) sounds more like it.

This Is What Breasts Really Look And Feel Like (NSFW)

We see breasts every day on billboards, in magazines, on HBO. They’re photoshopped and perfectly lit, idealized fantasy versions of reality. Weirdly, it can sometimes seem that the breasts we see the least of are our own, and the way we talk about them reflects that.

When breast cancer awareness charity CoppaFeel! initially asked women to describe their breasts for the What Normal Feels Like campaign, they almost universally picked a size. Big, small, maybe somewhere in the middle. But, as CoppaFeel! argues in the campaign, there’s so much more to our breasts, and it’s about time we got acquainted.

WARNING: Images below are NSFW.
breast ads

“When we describe our breasts, we only refer to their size and quite often we’re not even nice about it; hands up who answered tiny or saggy? Well, this year, we want you to get to know your boobs, have a good feel and think about what new words you could use to describe them,” CoppaFeel! writes on its website.

The charity’s end goal is to encourage more women to complete self breast exams so that they can get a feel for how their breasts are normally, and be able to identify any changes. The campaign they launched to get there is pretty powerful.

Just in time for October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, CoppaFeel! will be displaying photos of seven shirtless women on billboards throughout the United Kingdom.

“Society and the media think of breasts in a sexual way, but by creating this campaign we want to give boobs back to women and encourage them to think and talk about them in terms beyond size,” CoppaFeel! founder Kris Hallenga said, per various media outlets. “The more normal it is to talk about boobs, the more likely women are to check themselves regularly and spot any changes early.”

The campaign reportedly marks the first time uncensored, non-sexualized images of naked breasts have been displayed nationally on U.K. billboards. Cosmopolitan reports that the models featured in the campaign were selected on a “first come, first serve” basis, because CoppaFeel! wanted them to be more representative of the average woman.

“It emphasizes how rare it is to see breasts shown in an honest and non-sexualized way in the media,” Rankin, the mononymous photographer that brought the campaign to life, said of the images, according to media outlets.

“This campaign aims to help women reclaim the vocabulary around breasts and know what normal feels like for them,” Rankin also said.

Check out the campaign’s powerful (and NSFW) images, below.

This Kids’ Movie Makes ‘Transformers’ Look Like Child’s Play

“It definitely feels like an odd choice when everything is going electric for someone to stick with a cart and a buggy.”

Stop-motion animation is such a labor-intensive process that it almost seems masochistic. The method is daunting: Every figure needs to be manually adjusted for each frame, of which there are 24 each second, 1440 each minute. Never mind that computer generation can do anything stop-motion can … and better, in much less time. Yet, while CG is inarguably the major reason for the fall of stop-motion, its biggest proponents are now using the so-called “author of their demise” to save the beloved medium.

Although stop-motion has been around nearly since the dawn of film, the process hasn’t changed much since its inception. Today’s stop-motion animators are going through steps similar to those followed by George Melies in order to send men to the moon in 1902: the figures and set are designed, sculpted (most often out of clay) and manipulated by hand.

Since it began its sharpest decline in the early 1990s, that lack of adaptation has been a reality of which the industry is all too aware. As anecdote would have it: Steven Spielberg hired the renowned stop-motion animator Phil Tippett for work on the dinosaurs in “Jurassic Park” (1993), eventually bringing on CG expert in favor of stop-motion. When Spielberg told him that he’d been replaced, he said, “No, I’ve gone extinct.”

“For people who loved and were practitioners of stop motion in the ’90s, that’s kind of how we felt,” said Travis Knight, producer and lead animator on “The Boxtrolls.” “Everything was shifting over to the computer and so it definitely feels like an odd choice when everything is going electric for someone to stick with a cart and a buggy.”

For Knight, like many proponents he mentions, he was passionate about stop-motion, but he understood that he couldn’t be complacent about its path to endangerment. Teaming up with Laika animation studios, he became part of a process that has begun to define stop-motion as more than the “herky jerky” experience it had come to represent.

boxtrolls

Laika is best known for “Coraline” (2009), for which Knight won an Academy Award. Their most recent feature, “The Boxtrolls,” is the most highly developed use of stop-motion to date. Although, that’s not to say it wasn’t labor intensive.

“I’m sure most career advisors don’t list miniature sofa upholsterer as a job.”

Isaac Hempstead Wright (who voices the lead role of Eggs) was impressed with just how much work went into every detail still being set in place when he came on after the film had been in development for over seven years.

“I’m sure most career advisors don’t list miniature sofa upholsterer as a job,” Wright said. “On set, there were people upholstering sofas or creating mini furniture or mini cabbages for the garden. The detail of the work is unbelievable.”

The extensive preparation “The Boxtrolls” required was largely centered around figuring out how time filming would be spent. The most difficult part of this period included planning out a ballroom dancing scene.

Directors Anthony Stacchi and Graham Annable remembered discussing the sequence and meeting resistance from a room of overeager draftsmen. “The room went totally silent,” Stacchi said. “It was like: there’s no way we can do this.” It turned out there was a way, but it took over 18 months to execute.”

One of the draftsmen, Emanuela Cosi, studied every instance of the waltz on film and drew out hard sketches so that animators could better understand the dancers’ movements. Then a composer, Dario Marinelli, was brought on in order to write the piece of music the waltz would be set to. From there, Stacchi and Annable took Cosi’s sketches and Marinelli’s music to a group of local choreographers who danced through the entire sequence and had it filmed in every direction for reference. With that in mind, the sculptors reformatted the armatures in the women’s dresses, so that they could move up and down through the steps. All of this was mere anticipatory work for the actual filming process. The final cut of the scene was two minutes long.

At it’s core, much of the process is still the same, though CG has made an incredible difference when it comes to smoothing out the image and eliminating the most impractical aspects of frame-by-frame manipulation.

Knight estimates that Eggs has 1.4 million facial expressions over the course of “The Boxtrolls,” a number that would have been impossible to achieve, even if it was something that could be done with precision. “You could never get the changes between expressions as subtle as you like doing it by hand,” he said. “So we turned to rapid prototype printing to take the place of sculpting every individual face.”

The use of CG also allowed “The Boxtrolls” (and “Coraline” before it) a certain clarity as well or, as Stacchi put it, “made the image more fantastic.” It’s true, but returns us to the question of why one would choose to use stop-motion in the first place. Couldn’t you just get that more fantastic image in less than half the time using CG?

“There’s something you get out of the hand-crafted quality of stop motion,” Annable said. “It’s real life landing on real fabrics. Deep in the DNA of everybody there is the memory of having played with toys or trucks or model trains and I think stop-motion gets right into people’s subconscious. It’s like a dream world that you just don’t get with hand drawn animation which has an appeal of its own, graphic things coming alive and living.”

eggs

” If under all the fancy tools, you don’t have anything there, it’s all just an empty experience.”

There is something special about it, a tangibility to the texture that rests in the fact that it is, in a way, real. Everything you see on screen exists somewhere (in Laika’s studios, to be specific). A tiny Eggs exists, as well as a tiny box trolls family and the even tinier bugs they eat throughout the movie. They have all been built by hand, and that allows them a visceral quality that renders something different than the bigger-means-better push of CG.

Since it is based on a children’s book (Alan Snow’s “Here Be Monsters”), “The Boxtrolls is an especially good fit for stop-motion, because it begs the magical feel of a fairy tale coming to life. But Knight believes any story could be told through the process.

“At it’s core, what you’re looking at is a physical thing that was shot on a set with a real life camera being brought to life by the hands of an animator,” Stacchi said.

And maybe part of the appeal is in something so painstakingly detailed, but also refreshingly small. “I think it’s rarer and rarer to go to the movie theater now where everything isn’t just louder and bigger. It can get bigger and bigger and bigger, but in the end, a lot of the stuff just ends up being hollow,” Stacchi said. “Directors have to figure out what they’re trying to do with this stuff.”

Stacchi, like Knight, understands that stop-motion will never be the “queen of the realm,” like CG, but he hopes it will continue to prosper, despite the fact that modern technology has moved so far past Melies and his trip into outer space.

“Stop-motion has its limitations, but I also think the process elicits something at the other end that has this quality of warmth, charm and beauty that’s unlike anything else,” Stacchi said. “So, that’s why we focus on that bit of film making, despite the fact that it’s so damn hard.”

These Portraits Of Moroccan Hipsters Are More Nuanced Than They Look

The New York Times sees shades of Matisse and Koons. ArtNet is convinced he’s the next David LaChapelle. But Hassan Hajjaj, the Moroccan stylist and photographer, started out simply wanting to capture the essence of his home country in ways his buddies back in London would appreciate.

hassan hajjaj

The 53-year-old multidisciplinary artist was born in Morocco and moved to London in his teens, at the height of the punk craze. For the last 15 years, he’s joined the two cultures, splitting his time between Marrakech and London as he turns out densely textured portrait photography that plays well in the West but requires North African artistry to even exist at all.

His subjects are his current friends, who pose and dress in ways that translate into arresting hybrid art. A recent series, Kesh Angels, depicts a cross-section of this crowd — mostly women — in traditional clothes printed in global symbols of capitalism. Here a Louis Vuitton print, there a Nike swoosh. Many are henna tattoo artists who embody nuance in their daily life, zipping to jobs on a scooter, head scarves in place. Likewise, Hajjaj’s first solo show in America — My Rock Stars: Volume 2 — presented his male friends in the overblown poses of a Western icon, the rock star.

hassan hajjaj

Hajjaj designs the entirety of his shows, down to the clothes for the shoot and gallery seating. He hires local tailors and artisans to manufacture the work, which is often a neat fusion of two ideas, such as a Western suit pieced out of regional textiles. Hajjaj may be the name in the gallery notes, but these men and women are collaborators, switching from what Hajjaj once called an “automatic,” “factory” process — a souk tailor might typically produce nothing but pinstriped suits for businessmen throughout his career — to atelier-esque customization.

Frames are another chance to cross breed. The repetitive quality of Moroccan mosaic is echoed in inset rows of products printed with Arabic script. The tactile patterns, sometimes made of Coke or Fanta cans, are easy to overlook at first glance, but their purpose is multidimensional. They reinforce not only the theme of global commerce, but a thoroughly Moroccan habit: to recycle items out of necessity.

Scroll down for more from Hajjaj’s Rock Star series, and let us know your thoughts.

This Is What Joan Rivers Hoped Her Funeral Would Look Like

Joan Rivers accomplished an incredible amount in her life, and it was apparent that she was always thinking of what was next to come.

As a woman of very particular tastes, Rivers knew exactly how she hoped her funeral would be when the day came, and she wrote about it in her 2012 book, “I Hate Everyone … Starting with Me.”

She was also a woman who loved the death reel at the Oscars:

A good death reel can almost compensate for five hours of French actors trying to make adorable acceptance speeches. One of my favorite things to do is guess which of the dead actors will get the most applause and who’s going to be surprisingly underappreciated. It’s tricky you can’t always tell. Some years the most applause go to whoever died young and tragically; other years it goes to the old and beloved. I really love it when the Academy leaves a deadie out of the reel and the error of omission becomes a huge cause célèbre. Remember a few years ago when they left Bea Arthur out of the death reel [at the Oscars]? Bea Arthur! How did they leave Bea Arthur out? She was in “Mame;” she was in “All in the Family;” she was in “Maude;” she was a “Golden Girl,” for God’s sake! Bea was not only one of Hollywood’s leading ladies, she was one of Hollywood’s leading men! There are still people talking about that horrible gaffe and to this day, in Beverly Hills, when the subject comes up, people say Bea Arthur’s name in a muffled whisper like they used to do when they said “cancer.”

Rivers died on Sept. 4 at the age of 81 following complications from a procedure on her vocal cords. Her actual funeral is planned for Sept. 7 at Temple Emanu-El in Manhattan, the temple’s spokeswoman Elizabeth Fezrine told CNN. Details, including the time and if the public will be invited to attend, are not known at this time.

This Dude Makes Proposing At Bonnaroo Look Pretty Damn Romantic

John Ferreira knew he wanted to propose to his girlfriend Catherine Mauro at Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival after the two attended last year and absolutely fell in love with the experience.

“It’s one of the few places on earth where you can just remain in the moment instead of worrying about work or bills,” he told HuffPost Weddings of the Manchester, Tenn. festival. “There is just an overall sense of freedom there, it’s just magical.”

Six months ago, Ferreira turned to his friends on Reddit for help with the proposal. And help they did — all the way from conception to execution. Below, he explains how it all went down:

And like the courteous festivalgoer he is, Ferreira made sure to pop the question early on so that no one who was helping out would have to miss any of the weekend’s main events. Good call, Ferreira.

Taking a Hard Look at What’s Important: Validating our Values

When someone asks what our values are, we can probably start listing things that seem important to us in life right away. These things will determine how we assess our level of success, and so getting them right is very important.

However, as we eagerly list those values we may not quite as readily step back to decide which of those are actually ours and not ones that have been handed to us over the years. These ‘hand-me-down’ values are still very valid, so much so, that by now making that distinction may seem like a bit of a struggle.

I first noticed this when talking to students at the business school about their careers, goals and aspirations. What they considered to be important to them as they thought about their new post MBA lives was strikingly similar. It made sense; a set of like minded, highly driven individuals with similar backgrounds were likely to have common values. But equally, they were also very different people, and though I didn’t get this information the first time, after a bit of prodding I found out that:

Jo, had lost his father when young and grown up in a small home in Kansas, Peter was dealing with huge financial burdens and was born and raised in London, and Emily came from a long line of doctors in Kenya and was breaking away from her family tradition to pursue her dreams of becoming an entrepreneur. So, I pushed further and asked about their backgrounds and what that meant in terms of who they wanted to be, and how they defined success.

Soon the validation started trickling in,

I mean sure, when I say making an impact, of course I am talking much more than money.

When I said I’d never move back to Kansas, I mean I guess, if my mother needed me to, I would… It’s actually not so bad.

Hearing the students start to modify that initial checklist inspired me to do the same. Which of the values I held most dearly were ones I actively chose? It made me think about how far away from my Mediterranean origin I had come, and more so about the fact that I never really chose a fast paced, big city lifestyle, but yet here I was, allowing the city to define what success meant to me.

While we busily chase what everyone else chases, and make comparisons based on selective information through things like social media, it may be hard to really take the time to examine what really matters to us, personally. It gets even harder if it directly conflicts with what matters to those around us, or more accurately what appears to matter. I suppose we can call this, ‘value pressure.’

For the business students it was as important as ever to perform that validation, as they thought about their future careers and continued to define success for themselves, but I worried that might not happen. What I also realized was that we are all at risk of pursuing a path assuming it will define success for us. Without taking the time and being flexible enough to examine those values constantly and checking to see which hold true, and which lost value along the way, we may stop really remembering or trusting what we believe. It is then that we risk that all the effort we put into our endeavors, career and projects lead us down a path where our values just aren’t valid.

Does This Haircut Make Me Look Gay?

2014-05-29-DSC09260.JPG

I cut my hair last month. Let me rephrase: I shaved my head. After eight years of long, mostly natural hair, it was time. The seed had been planted over a decade earlier, when I first volunteered as a hairstylist for a St. Baldrick’s event. Over the following years the seed was fertilized and watered by various clients who shaved their heads without regret, reveling in the liberation of packing away the blowdryer and hair products.

Once it was decided that I would be going through with it, I opted to join forces with the St. Baldricks Foundation. I mean, if I was going to shave my head, I might as well raise money for a good cause. Also, once I wrote the fundraising email and clicked “send,” effectively notifying everyone around me about my intended plan, there was no chickening out. It’s not like I was scared, but we tend to get attached to these things about our appearance, relying on them out of habit. I knew I would not be ugly with a shaved head, but I honestly had no idea what to expect. I didn’t know what my head shape would look like, what the birthmarks on my scalp would look like, or what my hairline would do, so I was slightly apprehensive, against my better judgment.

In addition to my own apprehension, which was constantly doing battle with my stubborn aversion to coddling my vanity, I was barraged with outside opinion. It was surprising how many individuals, friends or family, peers or acquaintances, felt strongly about my choice.

“Can’t you donate your hair without actually shaving it?”

“What about a pixie?”

“It’s not too late to change your mind.”

“You are going to look super-butchy.”

“How much do I have to donate to get you to not shave your head?” (That one was from my mother.)

What’s the big deal? It’s just hair. And it’s my hair. And yet everyone around me had to slip in their say, which didn’t succeed in undermining my decision at all but did succeed in chipping away at my confidence. I knew that that wasn’t anyone’s intent, and certainly I didn’t want to let it affect me, but this confident girl can only take so much before she starts to feel the eroding effects of offhanded comments.

The day came, and a few friends gathered around while my best friend shaved my head. I donated over a foot and a half of hair through Pantene and raised $ 1,900 for St. Baldrick’s. It turns out that my noggin is not that bad shorn, though my birthmarks look like cheetah spots. It feels great to have friends and strangers rub my shaved head (though now it has grown a bit, so I get fewer rubdowns), and yes, it is as liberating as promised — beyond liberating.

The comments and opinions have only increased, but at least now that people see what I look like, they tend to be more positive. Again, I am startled by the vehemence of opinion shared by others about my hair.

“You look super-butch, and I love it.” Awesome.

“You look super-butch, but I like it.” Umm, OK?

“You look like such a lesbian.” Well, I’m not a lesbian, but I do have a girlfriend, so….

“Your hair is so gay now, but you’re still cute.” Thanks? Wait, is gay normally not cute?

“I just want to take that shaved head and [fill in explicit adjective and verb here].” Take it easy!

2014-05-29-photo2.jpg

What I find fascinating is that I went from bi invisibility due to my long hair and “straight” appearance to bi invisibility due to my short hair and “gay” appearance. I had no idea that so many people would feel so strongly about my appearance and my head of hair. Though I struggle with the threat of insecurity awaiting a harsh comment or judgment, I have to admit that I have never felt more confidence walking into a gay bar. Whereas before I would rarely get a wink or a nod, often feeling eyes swish right past me, now I have the ladies making eyes at me across the room. It turns out that I should have done this a long time ago, back when I was single. Does this haircut make me look gay? Who cares?

If you have ever had an itch or an inkling to cut your hair, or even better, to shave your head, just do it.

A State-By-State Look At Marriage Numbers Across America

If you want to live in a state where you’ll be surrounded by lots of married folks, then head to Utah where 57 percent of the population is hitched. (No surprise there!)

Find The Best — a website that collects and presents data sets on a variety of topics — used marriage data from the Census’s American Community Survey to calculate the percentage of married people in states across the U.S.

The percentages were calculated by taking the number of people over the age of 15 (“Seems young, but this is how the Census collects the information,” a Find The Best product associate told HuffPost) who are currently married in a given state and dividing it by the total population of people 15 and older in that state. The numbers were pulled from the ACS’s 2007 to 2012 surveys.

To find out how your home state stacks up, hover over the area on the map.

Sneaking a Look at God’s Cards

Sneaking a Look at God’s Cards

Quantum mechanics, which describes the behavior of subatomic particles, seems to challenge common sense. Waves behave like particles; particles behave like waves. You can tell where a particle is, but not how fast it is moving – or vice versa. An electron faced with two tiny holes will travel through both at the same time, rather than one or the other. And then there is the enigma of creation ex nihilo, in which small particles appear with their so-called antiparticles, only to disappear the next instant in a tiny puff of energy. Since its inception, physicists and philosophers have struggled to work out the meaning of quantum mechanics. Some, like Niels Bohr, have responded to quantum mechanics’ mysteries by replacing notions of position and velocity with probabilities. Others, like Einstein and Penrose, have disagreed and think that the entire puzzle reflects not a fundamental principle of nature but our own ignorance of basic scientific processes. ‘Sneaking a Look at God’s Cards’ offers the general reader a deep and real understanding of the problems inherent to the interpretation of quantum mechanics, from its inception to the present. The book presents a balanced overview of current debates and explores how the theory of quantum mechanics plays itself out in the real world. Written from the perspective of a leading European physicist, the book looks extensively at ideas from both sides of the Atlantic and also considers what philosophers have contributed to the scientific discussion of this field. ‘Sneaking a Look at God’s Cards’ sets out what we know about the endlessly fascinating quantum world, how we came to this understanding, where we disagree, and where we are heading in our quest to comprehend the seemingly incomprehensible.

Golden Globes Facts: A Look Back At Hollywood’s Most Unpredictable Award Show

As we gear up for Sunday’s Golden Globes ceremony, which is guaranteed to provide more of the awards’ usual zaniness, let’s take a look back at some Globes trivia.

The Globes used to hand out two New Star of the Year accolades, one male and one female. They were discontinued in 1983. Winners included Robert Redford, Dustin Hoffman, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mia Farrow, Diana Ross and Bette Midler.

Unsurprisingly, Meryl Streep holds the record for the most nominations. She has 28 nods and eight wins, for “Kramer vs. Kramer,” “The French Lieutenant’s Woman,” “Sophie’s Choice,” “Adaptation.,” “Angels in America,” “The Devil Wears Prada,” “Julie & Julia” and “The Iron Lady.”

(Streep and Nicole Kidman celebrate their 2003 wins for “Adaptation.” and “The Hours,” respectively. Streep co-starred in “The Hours” and was nominated opposite Kidman for Best Actress – Drama.)

For many years, the Globes had no host and awards were handed out by journalists in attendance. That changed in 1958 when the Rat Pack stormed the stage and took over unofficial hosting duties. Ricky Gervais was the show’s first hosts since John Larroquette and Janine Turner emceed in 1995.

Four actors have gone home with two awards in the same year: Sigourney Weaver (1989, for “Gorillas in the Mist: The Story of Dian Fossey” and “Working Girl”), Joan Plowright (1993, for “Enchanted April” and “Stalin”), Helen Mirren (2007, for “The Queen” and “Elizabeth I”) and Kate Winslet (2010, for “Revolutionary Road” and “The Reader”). Julia-Louis Dreyfus, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Idris Elba are among the stars who have a chance to join that list this year.

The Globes’ first trophy originated in 1945, one year after the inaugural awards. Members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association held a contest to design a statuette that would reflect their aim to honor the best in film. The group’s president, Marina Cisternas, crafted a golden globe with a filmstip wrapped around it and mounted on a pedestal.

Miss Golden Globe was instated in 1963. This year, Sosie Bacon (below) will take over the duties. Previous Miss Golden Globes who’ve gone on to see fame include Melanie Griffith, Laura Dern, Joely Fisher, Tara Reid and Freddie Prinze Jr., who is one of only a few Mr. Golden Globes.

The television prizes were added in 1956. Since then, only one other category — Best Animated Feature, which was introduced in 2007 — has joined the roster of awards. “Cars,” “Ratatouille,” “WALL-E,” “Up,” “Toy Story 3,” “The Adventures of Tintin” and “Brave” have since won.

Robert Redford is this year’s nominee whose first win was the longest ago. (He took home 1966’s Most Promising Newcomer honor, for “Inside Daisy Clover.”)

Lupita Nyong’o’s (“12 Years a Slave”) and Barkhad Abdi’s (“Captain Phillips”) nominations are in honor of their first film roles ever.

The Cecil B. DeMille Award has been handed out 60 times. Only a dozen women have been the recipients. Judy Garland remains both the first female and youngest winner in the award’s history. The oldest was 90-year-old studio mogul Samuel Goldwyn. Only two African-Americans have won: Sidney Poitier and Morgan Freeman. This year’s honoree, the notoriously awards-adverse Woody Allen, has said he will not attend the ceremony. Diane Keaton will accept in his stead.

Allen is taking a note out of Marlon Brando’s playbook. Brando refused the Golden Globe he won in 1973 for “The Godfather,” using it as opportunity to protest U.S. “imperialism and racism.”

Kerry Washington is the first black female to crack a leading-actress TV category (comedy or drama) since Regina Young was up for “I’ll Fly Away” in 1992.

Six of 2014’s TV actor nominees received film nods in previous years.: Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright, Don Cheadle, Michael J. Fox, Jon Voight, Janet McTeer. Julia-Louis Dreyfus joins that list thanks to her dual nominations this year, for HBO’s “Veep” and the movie “Enough Said.”

Critics were so shocked when “The Tourist” and “Burlesque” racked up multiple high-profile nominations in 2011 that reports accused Sony, the movies’ distributor, of bribing HFPA voters with an all-expenses-paid trip to Las Vegas and a meet-and-greet with Cher.
johnny depp golden globes

The Globes’ reputation for filling nomination slots with critically panned movies didn’t begin with “The Tourist” and “Burlesque.” The most infamous example came in 1982 when Pia Zadora, star of the lambasted movie “Butterfly,” took home New Star of the Year the same year she garnered Worst Actress and Worst New Star at the Golden Raspberry Awards. Reports then surfaced that Zadora’s husband, Israeli multimillionaire Meshulam Riklis, had flown HFPA members to Vegas — sound familiar? — to watch Zadora perform.

Other surprising nods in recent years include Kevin Spacey for “Casino Jack,” Sarah Jessica Parker for “The Family Stone,” “Patch Adams” for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Jim Carrey for “Liar Liar.”

If either “American Hustle” or “12 Years a Slave” — this year’s most-nominated movies — sweeps up all of its categories, it would be the first movie to do so since 1975’s “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.”
american hustle amy adams image

Christine Lahti had to be summoned out of the bathroom when she won in 1998 for Best Actress in a Television Series – Drama.

“Nashville” (1975) is the most-nominated movie in Globes history, with nine nods. (It only took home one trophy, for Best Original Song.) “Cabaret,” “Bugsy” and “Titanic” each received eight nominations.
