A Bouquet of Love

A Bouquet of Love

Cassia Pappas has found herself in a nearly impossible situation. She wants to spend her time immersed in her new job at a Galveston Island floral shop, arranging blooms and brightening occasions with her lovely creations. But her huge Greek family-especially her father-has other ideas. They’ve all relocated to Galveston to open up a new family restaurant location on the Strand- directly across the street from the Rossis’ popular pizza place-and they want Cassia’s full participation. To make matters worse, as Cassia is trying to develop a strong professional relationship with Galveston’s premier wedding coordinator, Bella Neeley, her own father is intent on stealing all of the Rossi family’s faithful customers. Not exactly the best way to get into Bella’s good graces Still, at least Alex, that hot delivery guy from the nursery, is always hanging around the flower shop. Fan favorite Janice Thompson gives readers one more romp with Bella, Galveston, and the bustling wedding biz in the final installment of her popular series. Anyone who loves quirky families, loads of laughter, and tender romance will find themselves hooked.

Better Call Saul: Michael McKean on Coming to Love Chuck

Full spoilers for Better Call Saul’s Season 2 finale, “Klick,” continue below.

There is at least one person who loves Chuck McGill beyond his brother Jimmy, and that is actor Michael McKean. Even as Chuck turns into a straight villain out to take down his corner-cutting, rule-breaking younger brother, McKean is going to be the first person to defend him.

McKean got on the phone to talk about the cliffhanger at the end of Better Call Saul’s Season 2 finale, how he relates to Chuck and how he portrays his character’s illness. He also (barely) teased what’s to come and whether any of these characters will get any peace.

3 Cute Country Singers Explain Why Guys Love Girls in T-Shirts and Jeans

When it comes to go-to outfits, there’s not much better than a favorite pair of jeans and a basic T-shirt. It’s comfortable, easy to dress up or down, and works on every body shape, tall or short, curvy or willowy. It also happens to be a guy magnet, with men everywhere routinely saying it’s their very favorite look to see on a girl (forget a sexy body-con dress). To figure out just what makes the simple style so appealing—and in in the spirit of last night’s CMA Awards—we asked a few hot country singers to spill.

“I like girls that don’t try too hard,” Canaan Smith told us in between stops on his current tour. “There is something about a t-shirt hanging off her shoulder that will never not be sexy.” (Psst—get to know him better: he he let Glamour in on a day in his country-cool life).

The classic outfit spelled love and creative success for Ryan Michaels, who’s half of country duo Haley & Michaels with new bride Shannon (they were married this May and, yup, her walk down the aisle was to a song they wrote together just for the occasion).

“When I met Shannon, she was wearing jeans and a James Taylor T-shirt, which totally rocked,” he remembered. “I’ve always thought it showed confidence to be understated. To me, girls are always sexier when they’re not trying too hard.”

“Maybe it’s just the country boy in me, but I’ll take jeans and a T-shirt on a girl any day,” singer Cole Swindell echoed (his first-ever headlining tour kicks off this month, confirming he’s pretty much becoming a big deal). “I think it shows a laid-back chill side, and that’s sexy to me.”

Three makes a trend, y’all. It appears safe to say that the universal, time-tested appeal of a woman wearing jeans and a t-shirt is that it’s easy (why we love wearing the look!). There’s still something warm-and-fuzzy special about getting a glowing response when you’ve put time into a big night, getting ready and picking out a special dress, but when it’s all said and done, the most magical style moment might just happen when we’re dressed down.

Have a date night on the calendar soon? Come see 11 fall outfits we love for dinner, drinks, or dancing.

“Jeux:” New York City Ballet Plays the Game of Love

2015-10-19-1445287598-4203070-SaraMearnsandCompanyinKimBrandstrupsJeux.PhotocreditPaulKolnik.jpg

Black, white and grey. An imposing opaqueness consumes the David H. Koch Theater, like in an old-fashioned film. Every twist of the palm seems shrouded in darkness and contrast, a silhouetted semblance of reality. The lone gold light adds warmth to the scene, a splash of color in the void. Romance masks emotion so that nothing feels so intimidatingly honest. Like when Audrey Hepburn appeared onscreen, the stage is a mirage, a nostalgic, glamorous, gorgeous rendering of what the world will never be: simply lovely.

And yet it is this simplicity that feels too safe in Kim Brandstrup’s premiere for New York City Ballet. Jeux reminds you of Kurt Vonnegut’s iconic line: “Everything was beautiful and nothing hurt.” But sometimes you crave that ache, that immediacy. Sometimes you want to feel something — sweet, cruel, fresh, haunting, anything — just to know that you’re alive. Brandstrup won’t offer that kind of narrative; as a former film student at the University of Copenhagen, he’s more invested in a story’s intrigue than its subtext.

On its own, Jeux sparkles, entrenched in a ’50s imagination reminiscent of Gigi and An American in Paris. But on a program beside the season’s other commissions by Myles Thatcher, Robert Binet, Troy Schumacher and Justin Peck, the action seems drained, almost exhausted. There’s none of the novelty of Thatcher’s gender obfuscation, or Binet’s use of space, or Schumacher’s intricate patterning or Peck’s avant-garde vitality. Brandstrup’s piece is a ballet, amidst other ballets, bland in its generality. You can glue your eyes to it for twenty minutes and claim its pleasure. But it probably won’t make you smile from enthusiasm or whimsy.

The curtain opens to a promising image: Sara Mearns standing in a spotlight, a heap of bodies hiding behind her. Amar Ramasar ties a blindfold around her temples, and the game begins. Unlike Vaslav Nijinsky’s original Jeux from 1913, nobody’s really playing tennis; this is a love sport. Mearns is infatuated with Ramasar, who in turn falls mutually for Sterling Hyltin. Adrian Danchig-Waring likes Mearns, who doesn’t notice his affection because she’s obsessed with Ramasar. If anyone hurts, scorned by a partner, it doesn’t feel so urgent. Claude Debussy’s score swells too often and too richly for pain to matter, and you know you’re in a universe where the plot will sort itself out neatly in the end. If Brandstrup intended for Jeux to have any dab of authenticity, he should have chosen a less majestic, dreamy composer.

2015-10-19-1445287871-4535954-SaraMearnsandAdrianDanchigWaringinKimBrandstrupsJeux.PhotocreditPaulKolnik.jpg

Sara Mearns and Adrian Danchig-Waring in Kim Brandstrup’s Jeux.Photo credit: Paul Kolnik.

The work isn’t insignificant — every moment is articulate and stunning, and a few gel so nicely that you can’t distinguish motion from music. When Mearns cascades backwards into awaiting arms, faint, weak, her body hinged at the hips as she’s rotated 360 degrees. When Hyltin seamlessly wanders into a triple piqué turn, her arms plopped in a sassy “V.” When the corps waltzes across the floor and under the moon, popping into lifts in passé, their reflections dancing like phantoms on a scrim. In fact, these shadows are the most interesting part… man-made projections crafted by the human body, distorted and elongated.

Still, when Mearns removes the blindfold from her face and throws it onto Danchig-Waring — the next victim of blinding lust — the symbolism feels empty. Were you supposed to sympathize with Mearns? Was Jeux anything more than a game? What were you — was I — meant to feel? Mearns tumbles into Danchig-Waring, pressed above, slowly melting to lie over him on the ground. She has snatched him as prey, like Ramasar did to her, like your lover did to you and like you’ve probably done to an innocent someone.

… And so what?

Work-Life Balance: Your Right to Love Your Life

“Excuse me” I said to the guard inside the courthouse behind the counter, are there any resting rooms inside this courthouse? I’m on jury duty and am feeling a bit tired, is there any place during lunch hour where I could lie down? He looked at me and said “restrooms, sure they are over there ” and pointed towards the stairs behind me. I said, oh no I don’t mean restrooms, I meant “resting rooms” as I put my hands under my cheek and leaned to the side, making my point of wanting to get a quick shut eye experience.

Now, realizing I probably sounded silly, I told him that where I am from in northern Europe there are, at universities and libraries for example, “resting rooms” for those needing to take a quick nap. He moved back, opened his eyes wider in surprise and laughed out his reply “well then, maybe I should move to Europe!”

We have all heard the term work-life balance, and I am sure we can all relate to feeling that we just don’t have enough time in a day to do the things we need to do. Sometimes this makes us very tired, as in the case when I wanted to take a nap at the courthouse.

Having read up on this topic for this post I mainly see the “balancing act” theme between life and work and the “who is responsible” theme (you or the company). All great, and I’d like to offer also, that you have the undeniable right to love your life. It is not just about having the right to a life (see the declaration of the Human Rights) but rather it is about thriving. There is a difference between doing something, going through the motions like a zombie and creating something, which drives and motivates us. If you don’t work – as in love your life, nothing works, including companies.

Thinking of having a right to love your life shifts the conversation a tad, adds another flavor more towards the idea of solidarity to make sure those rights happen for each other. A right lives in the realm of seriousness, ironically for this post many of concepts considered “rights” are protected in a court of law. A right is not up for negotiation, it is not a sometimes and someday kind of phenomenon and it is not solely up to the individual alone to “make it happen”. Dressing work-life balance in this way we push our aspirations up a level to think about what can be created to have people (and companies) thrive.

Being Swedish-American, having lived most of my life in Sweden and seven year working in LA and New York I have come to understand different shades of what makes life work from two different cultural ways of talking about things. It is the age-old conversation of be, do, have and how we balance these for a gratisfactory experience. In today’s world of business a creative mindset is the new “it” thing to possess, and cultures can assist in opening up to new ways of seeing something we look at every day. I understand culture can be a sensitive topic, but it is not the notion of cultures that create sensitivity in itself, it is our tendency to categorize and places one thing above the other. Perfectly fine when your shopping for a new sweater but not functional when understanding why people do what they do.

Cultures are in essence interpretations on much of the same set of universal values, distinguishable but always changing habits (Confucius). This becomes clear when some cultures have invented words for states, feelings and the world out there, whereas others have not. “Resting rooms” is apparently not a ubiquitous concept in the American English language and before I explained it the officer misheard me. He didn’t hear what he hadn’t heard before. Language matters, because language is the key with which we unlock how to understand our world and it affects processes, systems and how things work in a society. The fact that there was no resting room in the courthouse, doesn’t necessarily mean that the U.S. undervalues sleep, it just means sleep and napping didn’t belong in that specific context, or at least not in a designated area.

The conversation that people matter is not new, the school of Human Resources go back some time, but seeing what the world looks like (economic crashes, layoffs, income inequality) it is clearly not considered the most important thing. Profit is usually the most important thing. Boxall and Purcell (2011) in their book Strategy and Human Resource Management conclude that human capital can contain the most competitively valuable sources which sets a company apart, create creative companies and bring a vantage point in the market place. When access to resources alone cannot explain successes, something else is reasonably at play, could the x-factor be people? Yet, Piketty (2013) chooses to exclude human capital from the asset column in his book Capital in the Twenty-First Century, as an individual’s labor power, skills, training and abilities cannot be owned or traded on a market detached from the person they came from. Would you agree with that idea? There still is this uncertainty whether taking care of people matters in orders of magnitude, yet we all know in our hearts that if we put people first, before anything, all the time and always – everything else will follow. Of course at the heart of that conversation is that self care comes first, naps and all.

Were the Beatles Right About Love?

Were the Beatles right? Is love really all you need for a good marriage? Actually that’s a terribly destructive myth.

Love at first sight is a popular notion. Some relationships begin this way and, as luck would have it, blossom into good marriages. But usually when people immediately think that they’ve found him (or her) at last, they’re in fantasy land. They are imagining a wonderful kind of life together with someone they barely know. If they marry impulsively, they may soon find that they have too little in common for a lifelong relationship. Consequently, the chemistry fades away and not much else if left to build on.

Leading with Your Brain

Love is essential for a good lasting relationship. But the brain, as well as the heart, needs to be engaged to keep (what the Righteous Brothers called) “that loving feeling” alive and growing. Singles who want to get married are often advised to make a list of ten qualities they are looking for in a mate. Doing so helps get beyond the “follow your heart” cliché and, instead, to put thought into the process of deciding who is a good prospect for marriage.

I’m a strong believer in friendship first. If you want your future husband to be your best friend as well as your lover, spend enough time with him to learn whether the two of you are likely to be compatible in the long run. You’re more likely to successfully test yourselves as friends if you act more like a friend than as a lover while getting to know him over a period of at least a few months.

What about sex?

Don’t feel bound to anyone’s time table for when the right time is to become sexually involved. You may have heard that men move on to look for someone else if “nothing happens” by the third date.

I think this may be true for men who feel entitled to sex, regardless of whether they want a noncommittal relationship or one that leads to marriage. If your goal is marriage, it makes sense to avoid getting sexually involved before you feel ready to do so both emotionally and mentally. You will want to have as much time as you need to test the relationship as objectively as possible and of course, and you may also be guided by your own value system based on what your religion’s teachings or those from another source.

Distinguishing Sex from Love

Are you able to distinguish between sex and love? Sex gets the hormones flowing, especially, in women, oxytocin, which has been called the “love hormone” — for good reason. It causes women to feel emotionally bonded and can blind them to the other person’s shortcomings that they would probably recognize if they hadn’t compromised their objectivity. By avoiding getting too physically involved too soon, you’ll give yourself time to see if a real friendship develops, and if the potential exists for spending a lifetime together.

It’s a mistake for a marriage minded woman to have sex because she feel pressured to in order to keep a man interested in her. That’s not love and it’s no basis for a friendship that might lead to marriage. A man who doesn’t respect your boundaries is not for you.

Keeping Love Flourishing in Your Marriage

If you are already married to someone who meets your basic requirements for a life partner, be grateful. But that is just the beginning. Love can grow or fade. If you want to keep love alive, it is up to you. You’ve taken the first step by choosing a partner with whom the chemistry is good and who shares enough of your interests, values and lifestyle preferences for the two of you to be compatible over time.

Benefits of Marriage Meetings

A great way to keep your relationship on track is by holding a weekly marriage meeting, which is a short, gentle conversation that cover all the basics, as described step by step in my book, Marriage Meetings for Lasting Love: 30 Minutes a Week to the Relationship You’ve Always Wanted. Marriage meetings foster romance, intimacy, teamwork, and smoother resolution of issues

By regularly investing a small amount of time and energy, you and your spouse can enjoy both love and a true friendship that lasts for a lifetime.

‘Fool for Love’: Falling Short

A tumultuous relationship sits before us in Sam Shepard’s Fool for Love. From the outset, you don’t know what’s in store for May (Nina Arianda) and Eddie (Sam Rockwell), who seem to love each other at times, but want to wring each other’s necks at other times. In many plays, this kind of tension and uncertainty can lead to a strong resolution. But this go-around, there’s explosiveness without the substance to justify it or reconsider at a greater length.

The lead actors do their parts, and director Daniel Aukin jams as much as he can into the 75-minute play. The script is the main problem — so many ups and downs, backs and forths, without a path forward.

Inside a sleazy motel room in the Mojave Desert, the stage is set with the heat turned way up. Intrigue and curiosity sits beside them on the stage, in the form of an old man, played by Gordon Joseph Weiss. He has several asides with the two lead characters. As more information and background details become available, the narrative is intended to lead to opinions changing and the focus moving. However, by the time these developments emerge, the audience will feel so restless they might no longer possess the capacity to change their feelings. A certain numbness sets in midway through the show once you accept that we’ll never see the outside of this cramped hotel room.

Some of the themes of the play stand out as striking and controversial. However, at that point, unfortunately, you can’t go back.

First Nighter: Robert O’Hara’s “Barbecue” Sizzles a Bit, Sam Shepard’s “Fool for Love” is Catnip for Actors

The first act of Robert (Bootycandy) O’Hara’s Barbecue consists of four scenes, two each in alternation, depicting a lower-class white family and a lower-class black family on what looks like a picnic in a shady Middle America forest preserve.

Curiously, the five members of both families, on vivid display at the Public, share the same names–James T. (Mark Damon Johnson, Paul Niebanck), Lillie Anne (Becky Ann Baker, Kim Wayans), Marie (Arden Myrin, Heather Alicia Simms), Adlean (Constance Shulman, Benja Kay Thomas) and Barbara (Tamberla Perry, Samantha Soule).

As the act progresses and no actual barbecuing happens, it’s revealed that in each family unit James T., Lillie Anne, Marie and Adlean aren’t present simply to scream and shout at each other over long-brewing resentments. They’ve planned this outing as an intervention. Prone to drinking and drugging as they are–Lillie Anne more or less excepted–they’re worried about sibling Barbara, whose substance abuse apparently outdoes theirs by a country mile.

Since the actions of both groups virtually mirror each others’ and the term “bad behavior” only begins to describe how they engage intramurally (though more verbally than physically), the point playwright O’Hara’s looks to be establishing is that white trash and black trash are equally trashy.

And while some of the tactics they use to bait each other are occasionally amusing, there’s a whiff of superiority about his intentions. There’s the sense that O’Hara is sending a middle-class audience the snootily comforting “aren’t the less privileged just awful?” message. Not too accepting of him, is it? The poor(er) may always be with us, but that’s no excuse to denigrate them as relentlessly as O’Hara does almost to the act’s end when the two Barbaras, the supposed interventions, finally arrive.

But then the cunning dramatist pulls a fast one. Having led the patrons through four scenes that have more than started to try patience, he shifts gears in as radical a manner as any sleight-of-hand playwright has in recent, and even not so recent, memory.

As a result and because of the Barbecue structure, just about any further description of the action–and that means the entire second act–would turn into a monumental spoiler. Perhaps it’s acceptable to indulge a quasi-spoiler and report that for much of the comedy’s remainder the two Barbaras, who heretofore have said just about zilch, take focus. One of them begins to resemble an actual celebrity along the lines of Whitney Houston and one of them, a memoirist, feels partially derived from James Frey’s notorious account of his life as an addict.

In other words, O’Hara’s seeming satire of a stratum of American society morphs into a satire of a completely different stripe. He’s sending up commercial cynicism as manifested in contemporary America life. Okay, maybe it’s also fair to say he makes an implied larger point by focusing narrowly on publishing and Hollywood. In his wily way, he even gets around to an Oscar race.

While he’s at it, he’s created 10 juicy parts for his cast to play under Kent Gash’s colorful direction and in Paul Tazewell’s often hilarious costumes that take into account the attraction women often have to leopard spots. Perry’s Barbara is at first super-confident, as the script has it, but begins to crumble, where Soule’s Barbara, who’s initially slightly intimidated by those second-act circumstances, gains her footing with aplomb. The others grab hold of their exuberant roles as if they were caged lions thrown thick steaks.

Whether the elongated nature of the first act is compensated for by the second act–which surely depends on falling for the second-act development–is up in the air. But O’Hara can be thanked for taking the risk as well as for much of the furious humor he unleashes.
******************
Since Sam Shepard’s 1983 Fool for Love didn’t appeal to me then and not in subsequent productions I’ve seen, I wondered whether this latest one, at Manhattan Theatre Club’s Samuel J. Friedman, would finally change my mind. Though when the lights went up on it, I was impressed by Dane Leffrey’s claustrophobic representation of a motel room on the edge of the Mohave Desert, nothing that ensued changed my ho-hum attitude towards the script.

Anyone who knows Shepard’s plays knows he’s impelled to assess the barren quality of American culture through depictions of the spiritually depleted American West. Fool for Love is no exception. (Mohave Desert = emotionally arid–get it?)

Eddie (Sam Rockwell) and May (Nina Arianda) are battling out their unspecified relationship alone, although sitting immobile in a chair just aside from the sterile motel accommodation is The Old Man (Gordon David Weiss.) The assumption is that the two are lovers, perhaps attempting to overcome an estrangement–or perhaps not.

For the longest time in the 75-minute one-act, The Old Man says nothing. Eventually, he addresses either Eddie or May, while whoever else is in the room hears nothing of what’s exchanged. Eventually roped into the fray is sincere gentleman caller Martin (Tom Pelphrey), who doesn’t quite know how to play the quivering vibes.

As those 75 minutes tick by, the connections between Eddie, May and The Old Man become clear. That’s to say they become clearer, although many patrons may well be left figuratively trudging through the Mohave sand, trying to catch up with what’s transpiring–and that includes an explosive before-fade-out occurrence that lighting designer Justin Townsend executes well. Sound designer Ryan Rumery also has a few ear-catching turns.

For patrons the effort put into making sense of events may not be worth it. What does go a fair stretch towards rendering the expended efforts rewarding are the performances. At first glimpsed sitting at the edge of the bed bent over with her hair hiding her face, tuft-like, Arianda plays the labile May as if she’s a tornado gathering force. Rockwell sees the cowboy-hatted Eddie as a not-yet-ignited stick of dynamite. He’s all contained menace. Weiss grabs attention for much of the time by doing nothing to grab attention and so is that much more attention-grabbing when he goes for it. Pelfrey does befuddled nice guy exactly right.

It may be that the lure for actors of such pungent roles explains the frequent Fool for Love sightings. Indeed, it may be that Shepard’s demanding work-out is more entertaining for the performers who get to take on Eddie and May than it is for anyone who gets to watch them.

Love Letters Volume 3: Wicked Whispers

Love Letters Volume 3: Wicked Whispers

“Are these your wedding pictures?” Annie asked, lifting a gorgeous sculpted velvet album off the bookshelf. Yolanda set the tea tray on the coffee table, then looked over. “Mmm-hmm.” “May I look?” Yolanda laugheda husky chuckle that sounded like it should come out of a six-foot-tall dominatrix, not the tiny woman passing Annie a plate of miniature tarts. “If you wish. Don and I hired an artiste , don’t you know, so almost all the formal photos are backlit or shot from some crazy angle. Luckily, our friend Tony had his camera with him. Most of what’s in there is by him.” Annie ignored her tea as she turned the pages. “I see what you mean,” she murmured as she flipped quickly through arty shots so pretentious and blurry she recognized Yolanda only by the large expanse of white gown. Halfway along, the photos started to show sun-filled historic architecture and people who actually had faces. “The venue is gorgeous,” Annie said, turning the pages more slowly. “Where is this?” “The Lyman Estate in Waltham. Don’s family is all in the Boston area, and we loved the venue.” “Ooh…” Annie pointed to one guest. “Who’s this?” Yolanda leaned over to check. “Stefan Cox? He’s Don’s boss.” Seriously? An architect could look like that? Somehow it seemed too plebeian a profession for a man who’d apparently left Mount Olympus to join the wedding party. Curly black hair, eyes so light Annie couldn’t stop staring at them, and a gorgeous skin tone. Tanned? “I thought you got married on New Year’s Eve,” she said. “We did. Why?” “Don’s boss looks so tanned.” Yolanda glanced at the photo. “Oh, no, that’s his normal skin tone. Multiracial background, I think. Don says Stefan’s parents are quite colorful in their own right. His mother’s Italian-Swedish, I believe, and his father is English but with ancestors from the Caribbean.” Annie raced through the rest of the photos, looking for the luscious Stefan in all the group shots. She sighed as she closed the album. “He’s single,” Yolanda said. Her knowing smile widened when Annie’s eyebrows shot up. “You’re kidding. He’s gorgeous.” Yolanda shrugged. “Gorgeous but picky, I gather. Don says Stefan won’t date anyone in the office, won’t date their clients, suppliers or pretty much anyone else. I think he’d like you, though,” Yolanda said, giving Annie a once-over. “Me?” She was pretty, but Stefan Cox was in a class by himself. “You. He likes your work.” “HowI mean, when did he see my work?” She’d been one of Yolanda’s jewelry designers for barely eight months. A few of Annie’s pieces were on display at the store, but they weren’t labeled as hers specifically. “I wore your black keshi pearl earrings to the firm’s Christmas party. Stefan remarked on them.” Yolanda collected shortbread crumbs with the pad of her pinkie. “I explained that you’d graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design and had your choice of employers. He wants to meet you.” Annie si

The Story of Valentina When I was a nine-year-old on Cape Cod I found an old book of gypsy spells that my mother had left for me when she died. I quickly set about performing the spells with my fourth grade friends. The nine-year-old gypsy became the tweener stalking the aisles of health food stores always looking for the best ingredients for my little herbal recipes. In high school I put together love spell kits for friends with boyfriend troubles. As a late teen I ran away to Paris where I read tarot cards by the banks of the Seine. Paris led to Hollywood and eventually to Portland. I had always dreamed of offering the natural ingredients in my spell kits to anyone who needed a little magic to focus their lives. We began making our products at home over the same big green kitchen stove we made pancakes for our kids on. Valentina’s Home-Brewed was born. All’s Not Fair in Love and War

When people try to put human faces on the those affected by World War II, they often focus on Nazi rallies, the Holocaust, the Luftwaffe’s bombing of London, and the Japanese who survived the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

In its dual capacities of documentary and narrative films, cinema has captured many historical moments (as well as producing some fine dramas set during World War II). Whether composing music for the 1952-1953 television series entitled Victory at Sea or the Broadway stage (South Pacific, The Sound of Music), Richard Rodgers made indelible contributions to how the effects of war were framed in people’s minds. His musical theme entitled “Beneath the Southern Cross” reappeared in Me and Juliet (which opened on Broadway on May 28, 1953 and ran for 358 performances). The show’s hit song, “No Other Love,” uses the same music.

Now that 70 years have passed since the end of World War II, it’s interesting to look at it from new perspectives. Although I doubt there was any collaboration between the two San Francisco summer festivals that did so, the results were fascinating.

* * * * * * * * * *

One of the documentaries featured in the 35th annual San Francisco Jewish Film Festival focused on the cinematic propaganda machine created by the United States Office of War Information. The agency’s efforts aimed at domestic audiences were obviously intended to support the war effort.

Newsreels and short films created for foreign markets (especially after the war’s end) were crafted to give the war’s battered survivors a more favorable impression of Americans and counter any prevailing negative stereotypes.

What most people don’t know is that the OWI’s newsreels were produced under the leadership of screenwriter Robert Riskin (who won an Oscar in 1935 for It Happened One Night) and was a frequent collaborator with director Frank Capra. Riskin was also married to Fay Wray (the star of 1933’s King Kong). Among the many talents that worked for the OWI were Aaron Copland, Alan Cranston, Lee Falk, Archibald MacLeish, Gordon Parks, James Reston, Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr., Robert Sherwood, and Josef von Sternberg, Without a doubt, the favorite OWI film shown around the world was 1943’s The Autobiography of a Jeep.

In retrospect, some of the OWI’s films may seem a bit campy to today’s audiences. Many, however, were translated into 20 languages and screened around the world. Narrated by John Lithgow, Peter Miller’s documentary, Projections of America, pays tribute to the work of Riskin and the OWI’s secret film unit.

Poster art for Projections of America

Because of the film’s dual narrative (covering Riskin’s marriage as well as the demands of his work for the government), Projections of America is a oddly compelling documentary which packs a lot of history into 52 minutes. Here’s the trailer:

* * * * * * * * * *

Stock footage from World War II (such as the material included in the following clip) plays a major role in the design and dramatic exposition of Two Women, a new opera by Marco Tutino (with lyrics by Tutino and Fabio Ceresa) which received its world premiere from the San Francisco Opera in June. Directed by Francesca Zambello (whose integration of film into the San Francisco Opera’s recent production of Der Ring des Nibelungen was a major factor in its dramatic strength), Two Women’s use of archival film — combined with S. Katy Tucker’s projections — created a stunning solution to shaping a story about the brutalities of war and the misery of those who suffer through them.

A co-production with the Teatro Regio in Turin, the new opera is an adaptation of Vittoria De Sica’s 1960 film starring Sophia Loren, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Eleonora Brown, and Raf Vallone. Because the Music Critics Association of North America was in town for the world premiere, a great deal of copy was generated debating whether Tutino’s score should be called neo-Verismo, faux-Puccini, or mildly derivative.

Fuck that shit. Having attended far too many operatic premieres (which were not just musical duds, but crashing bores as well), I was thrilled to be fully engaged with a new piece of opera/musical theatre whose score positively yearns to be sung. Tutino’s orchestral interludes have a near-cinematic sweep. Even with a full orchestra, I never had the feeling that his writing overwhelmed (or ignored) the singers — an extremely rare achievement for a contemporary composer. This is passionate, theatrical, and highly accessible music free from the curse of academia.

In his conductor’s note (as told to Marina Romani), San Francisco Opera’s musical director, Nicola Luisotti, states:

“I am enthusiastic about composer Marco Tutino’s creation. This opera was born out of a conversation we had years ago, one evening in my house in Tuscany. I asked Marco, ‘You know which opera is missing today? La Ciociara (Two Women)!” Operatic elements were present already both in the novel and film. And why? Because of the presence of a heroine, Cesira, that comes from the people. Famous characters don’t need to have their stories told — history tells their stories. A popolana, a woman from the people, doesn’t have the same privilege. Cesira’s story is incredibly touching, but it would not have ended up on the front pages of the newspapers because it was nothing compared to the bombed cities and concentration camps of World War II. Yet, on stage, with the right music, the humblest stories become eternal. Cesira’s story becomes about us, about deeply understanding the personal suffering experienced during the war.”

after being raped in Two Women

“It is important in our time to write stories and music to which everybody can feel connected. I consider this to be an invitation to all artists: ‘Write the present while looking at the past to navigate the future,’ as Verdi said. For example, Marco’s music is rhythmically and harmonically complex, but at the same time, it is connected to bel canto. In his score, there are harmonic explosions in which you recognize yourself and say, ‘This is the music that belongs to me and speaks to what I am feeling!’ When Cesira sings a lullaby to her daughter after they are raped, she sings a song of how profoundly she feels the tragedy of their situation, and how much her daughter needs to sleep, and to forget — even just for half an hour.”

From a musical standpoint, the evening was a triumph for the singers as well as for the musicians in the pit. As Cesira, Anna Caterina Antonacci delivered a heartbreaking performance as the mother who leaves Rome, hoping to find a safer life for her child back in her home town, only to end up getting raped alongside her 16-year-old daughter. Sarah Shafer’s Rosetta was tenderly sung when her character was sane as well as subsequently, when she appeared to be mentally defeated and sexually starved following her rape.

Dimitri Pittas as Michele in Two Women (Photo by: Cory Weaver)

Dimitri Pittas made a smashing debut as Michele, the schoolteacher and tender-hearted intellectual whose concern for Cesira and Rosetta was a far cry from the brutish behavior of Giovanni. With a powerful tenor voice (which one hopes to hear more of in future seasons), Pittas commanded the audience’s attention whenever he was onstage. As Giovanni, Mark Delavan pretty much recycled his portrayal of Scarpia (the loathsome and similarly amoral villain from Puccini’s Tosca).

Making solid contributions in smaller roles were Eddie Nelson as John Buckley (a wounded American soldier); Joel Sorensen as the frightened Italian lawyer, Pasquale Sciortino; Buffy Baggott as his mother, Maria; Christian van Horn as the Nazi villain, Fedor von Bock; and Zanda Svede as Lena.

Peter Davison’s sets worked well as a framework for the stage action as well as the filmed projections with Jess Goldstein’s costumes adding plenty of local color. At the risk of spouting heresy, I have to admit that I was much more drawn to Tutino’s passionate writing for Two Women than I was to Hector Berlioz’s mammoth score for The Trojans. Here are some highlights from Tutino’s new opera:

Paul McCartney, Fergie, Other Stars Record ‘Love Song To The Earth’

Music superstars have come together to stress the importance of protecting our environment.

A group of artists, including Paul McCartney, Jon Bon Jovi and Sheryl Crow recorded “Love Song to the Earth” — a new song dedicated to rallying people to climate action and supporting the U.N.’s efforts to get nations to agree on a universal climate agreement.

The song was released on iTunes and Apple Music on September 4, but will have a wide release a week later, according to a press release. Apple, as well as artists, producers and directors involved in the song plan to donate their proceeds to environmental organization Friends of the Earth U.S. and the United Nations Foundation.

Toby Gad, who helped write the star-studded track — which comes out months before December’s climate conference COP21 in Paris — says he hopes the song will open people up to the importance of fighting climate change.

“When the U.N. asked me to write a song about climate change I felt honored and inspired. So, my friends and I wrote ‘Love Song to The Earth’, focusing on a positive message about how precious our only planet is,” Gad said in a statement. “I hope this song will broaden the audience for this urgent message and give the politicians emotional support for meaningful climate agreement in Paris 2015.”

Other stars who were featured in the song include Fergie, Colbie Caillat, Natasha Bedingfield, Leona Lewis, Sean Paul, Johnny Rzeznik, Krewella, Angelique Kidjo, Kelsea Ballerini, Nicole Scherzinger, Christina Grimmie, Victoria Justice and Q’Orianka Kilcher. A video is set to be released on September 11, and will include celebrities, scientists and others holding up messages of support for our environment.

While the artists want to convey a sense of urgency in fighting climate change, Bedingfield, who also helped write the song along with Gad, John Shanks and Sean Paul, says the song is ultimately meant to uplift others in regards to the subject.

“We wanted to write a song that is about how when you love something, you look after it,” Bedingfield said in a statement. “While we know about the environmental issues, we’re unsure if there is any hope. With this song we wanted to talk about the environment in a way that would help people feel empowered to do something rather than be paralyzed by fear.”

Jon Bon Jovi Singing Ballad In Chinese Does NOT Give Love A Bad Name

You probably know Jon Bon Jovi as the larger-than-life rock star whose vocals have filled stadiums. But we betcha didn’t know he’s actually pretty darn good at Chinese, too.

(Or at least singing in Chinese).

Yes, the 53-year-old artist sang Teresa Teng’s popular ballad, “Yue Liang Dai Biao Wo De Xin,” or “The Moon Represents My Heart.” The singer, who recorded the song for Chinese Valentine’s Day — which took place last week — manages to sing it beautifully in Mandarin, while somehow maintaining his very recognizable Bon Jovi flair.

Listen to the artist get in touch with his softer side and sing an emotional rendition of the song. Then, notice that your jaw has probably dropped to the floor because you were unaware he was capable of singing in Chinese.

Seriously, what can’t he do?

First Nighter: A. R. Gurney’s “Love & Money” Doesn’t Buy Happiness

When Love & Money begins with Cornelia Cunningham (Maureen Anderman) confronting lawyer Harvey Abel (Joe Paulik) over the disposition of her will, it looks as if the new A. R. Gurney play is going to be substantive. Cornelia, you see, is planning to leave her impressively large gobs of money to charities, and this has Harvey worrying that her heirs–two grandchildren never seen–will contest the stipulations.

The assumption about Gurney’s intent, however, is misplaced. A dramatist who often pulls back from the more shadowy implications of his plots, Gurney withdraws from those here so forcibly that patrons may experience a mild form of whiplash. In the end, the comedy (?)–a co-production of the SignatureTheatre and the Westport Country Playhouse, where Mark Lamos, who directed, is artistic director–is a minor trifle.

Your enjoyment of it will hinge on how fond of trifles you are. Love & Money is so mildly amusing as it passes that I’m writing this review as fast as I can so that even more of it won’t fade from my memory before I finish.

Cornelia is rich, all right. The study–that Michael Yeargan has designed–where the action takes place and featuring its view of a staircase hung with tasteful landscape painting, confirms her wealth. Due to how wrong her late husband and two late children went as a result of being well heeled, Cornelia is convinced that money only corrupts. So she’s giving it away to Save the Children, et cetera.

Harvey’s concern is that Cornelia’s grandchildren will object, and when she assures him they have already been mollified, he surprises her by producing a registered latter from a man claiming to be the son of her late daughter Louisa, whom Cornelia claims never married or had children. Hardly has the missive come out of its envelope when the doorbell rings and in quick time the letter’s sender arrives–an African-American named Walker Williams (Gabriel Brown), who’s been nicknamed “Scott” because of his declared passion for F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Any committed theatergoer familiar with John Guare’s Six Degrees of Separation (there can’t be many who aren’t) will immediately wonder about Scott’s authenticity, but it sure looks as if Cornelia hasn’t spent much of her moolah on theater tickets.

To Harvey’s consternation, Scott ingratiates himself with Cornelia by way of the love for Fitzgerald that she shares. He also shows her a typewritten letter he says he received from Louisa after she’d left him with his father’s family and moved to France. There’s also the overall charm he smilingly dispenses. It does seem strange, though, that with all his passion for Fitzgerald, he doesn’t know the word “badinage.”

Oh, well, he does get around Cornelia, but when Harvey has to leave for lunch with his girlfriend, Scott doesn’t fare so well with Cornelia’s crusty cook Agnes Munger (Pamela Dunlap) and with Juilliard student Jessica Worth (Kahyun Kim). She’s stopped by to test a spinet Cornelia is offering to donate to the school

It turns out Cornelia had the instrument converted to a player piano some time earlier so she could program it with many of the Cole Porter songs she adores. (Did Scott Fitzgerald and Zelda love Cole Porter? Undoubtedly they all knew each other in Paris, but I digress.) The talented piano offers Jessica an opportunity to sing one of the 1913 Yale grad’s less well-known ditties, “Make It Another Old-Fashioned Please,” which Kim does nicely. When Harvey returns from lunch with news relevant to Cornelia and Scott, he seizes–with an important aim in mind–the opportunity to reprise “Get Out of Town,” another of Porter’s wry ballads. Like Kim, Paulik makes his unexpected rendition an attention-getter.

About this time, Gurney decides to wind up his tale to fit today’s trendy intermission less 90-minute format. In the name of a spoiler-free Love & Money account, no details will be listed as to how he does it. Certainly, nothing will be revealed about whether Scott is who he claims to be or whether Cornelia really cares one way or the other or whether Harvey prevails in his distrust of Scott.

But it’s fair to say that a work with the elements of a more probing examination of the haves and the have-nots definitely dwindles into something that couldn’t be more light-hearted and gay in the now nearly forgotten sense of the word. This, when money is blatantly prominent among the great contemporary American themes.

With Lamos deftly capturing Gurney’s curious mood, the cast members can’t be faulted. Anderman, who only leaves the stage for a short time when Cornelia goes to enjoy a cold-soup lunch with Scott, is lovely. Paulik does the hard-nosed lawyer well and then gets hilariously unstarched when he goes into his song. Brown is clever at keeping everyone guessing about what Scott is up to. Dunlap’s no-nonsense maid is right on the, uh, money, and Kim takes full advantage of her scene.

(Just wondering: Has Gurney given Scott the name Walker Williams because “Walker” is the designation accorded men who escort wealthy ladies when the husbands aren’t available? There is definitely the implication that Scott could turn into one of those odd characters.)

It may be that many ticket buyers will be as wowed by this addition to Gurney’s long play list as Cornelia is wowed by Scott. Others are very likely to leave their seats thinking a baffled, “Huh?”

Courtney Love Pens Heartbreaking Message To Late Husband Kurt Cobain

Courtney Love’s daughter Frances Bean Cobain turned 23 on Aug. 18, and the milestone seems to have stirred some emotions in the rock star.

On Aug. 19, Love shared a photo of herself with her late husband, Kurt Cobain, in bed with Frances when she was just a baby. Love captioned the photo, “My greatest love and our precious Bean #missyou #memories.”

My greatest love and our precious Bean #missyou #memories

Two days later, the 51-year-old singer shared another image from the same photo shoot and penned a heartbreaking message to Cobain, who died in 1994 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“Makes me feel so sad. Our baby is all grown up now. Jesus Kurt look at her face, what on earth were you thinking..!?!? God I miss you, we all miss you #family #memories #turnbacktime #lovehim,” she wrote.

While Cobain never really seems to fade from the headlines, the late rocker was in the spotlight again earlier this year with the release of the documentary “Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck,” which saw Frances Bean acting as executive producer and had Love’s full support.

Latinos Don’t Love Donald Trump

Business mogul Donald Trump proclaimed last month that Latinos love him. He might want to check the latest polling from Gallup, which found Latinos were more likely to say they disliked than liked him by a 51-point margin.

His results were disastrous compared to every other Republican presidential candidate on the survey, as illustrated by this chart released on Monday:

It’s not surprising that Trump is unpopular with Latinos. He opened his campaign by claiming the Mexican government was sending rapists and other criminals into the U.S. as undocumented immigrants, and his stance has hardened from there. Last week, he proposed ending birthright citizenship for children born in the U.S., and vowed to deport all undocumented immigrants.

Gallup notes that it did not poll Latinos on Trump before his announcement speech, so there’s no clear mark for how it affected his image. In their polling since, he’s been consistently viewed unfavorably.

Although Latinos don’t typically rank immigration as the top issue for choosing a candidate, harsh rhetoric against undocumented immigrants was considered a major factor in the GOP’s dismal result with Latinos in the 2012 presidential election.

Trump has succeeded in drawing Latinos’ attention, at the very least. Gallup reports that 8 in 10 of those polled had formed an opinion on Trump, compared to about 6 in 10 who had formed an opinion of Florida Gov. Jeb Bush. None of the other candidates hit the 50 percent mark for familiarity with Latinos.

Bush is faring the best with Latinos, who were more likely to say they viewed him favorably than unfavorably by an 11-point margin. His margin of favorability has actually gone up, although it’s yet to be seen whether there will be fallout from his recent stumbles over the term “anchor babies.” The former governor has taken a more moderate tack on immigration than Trump, and opposes changing the 14th Amendment to end birthright citizenship.

Among Democrats, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has a major advantage. She has a net 40 favorability score, and about 75 percent of Latinos know who she is. Only 25 percent of Latinos were familiar with Vermont Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders. The results were even worse for former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, former Virginia Sen. Jim Webb and former Rhode Island Sen. and Gov. Lincoln Chafee — only 14 percent of Latinos were familiar with them.

Gallup conducted the poll by telephone from July 8 to Aug. 23 as part of the U.S. Daily Survey. They polled a random sample of 2,183 Hispanic adults in the U.S. The margin of sampling error is ±5 percentage points at the 95 percent confidence level.

First Nighter: A. R. Gurney’s ‘Love & Money’ Doesn’t Buy Happiness

Take Your Love Life Into the Woods (And I Don’t Just Mean Sex Outdoors)

2015-08-21-1440186047-1294493-ID10073595.jpgIs your love life the romantic equivalent of a suburb? All plotted and predictable bits of grass and shrubbery; quiet, controlled, and so boring you want to blow your brains out? Time to leave the suburbs—and head into the woods.

This lesson comes to you by way of an unlikely source: Stephen Sondheim’s musical “Into the Woods.” The main story line is this: a childless baker and his wife, in a land far far away, are sent into the woods by a witch who promises to lift the childless curse she put on them if they bring back a few ingredients. Sort of like a very dramatic, life-or-death errand run. And it will require bravery, brains, and a little trickery to get it done.

The baker is a nice enough guy, but he’s a victim—of a spell, of circumstance (none of this is his ‘fault,’ etc.). Not the manliest of men. But all of that changes when he heads into the woods, which, here and in every other fairy tale, represent all that is dangerous and risky and unpredictable about the world and ourselves.

The baker’s wife follows her husband into the woods and is struck by what she sees. She sings in “It Takes Two”:

You’ve changed.
You’re daring.
You’re different in the woods.
More sure.
More sharing.
You’re getting us through the woods.

You’ve changed.
You’re thriving.
There’s something about the woods.
Not just
Surviving.
You’re blossoming in the woods.

She’s getting hot for him again, plain and simple. Not only because he’s being decisive and exhibiting a stronger, more manly appeal, but because, well, they’re not where they were. They’re not stuck in their little hovel with their same old worries and habits and flaws. They have risen to a new occasion.

At home I’d fear
We’d stay the same forever.
And then out here—
You’re passionate
Charming,
Considerate,
Clever…

The woods has tested their relationship, and revived it. Then, together they go and rip off poor Jack by trading him five magic beans for his aging cow. But that’s another story.

My point is this: We spend so much time seeking comfort, order, predictable assurance in our lives and our relationships that we mistakenly beat back what remains of the woods with a lawnmower and call it adulthood.

In her fantastic book Mating in Captivity, Esther Perel tells us that “the challenge for modern couples lies in reconciling the need for what’s safe and predictable with the wish to pursue what’s exciting, mysterious, and awe-inspiring.”

We expose the deliciously dark shadows of mystery and domesticate every last bit of wild within us. Responsibility. Maturity. And with it goes our wilder, untamed, but undeniably exciting nature, our lustiness, our sensuality, and our passion.

Here’s how to get back into the woods:

Embrace uncertainty. One of my colleagues, Matthew Walker, coach and author of Adventure in Everything, teaches this concept in his workshops. He says that what we endeavor to do in our lives, careers, and relationships is made that much more rewarding if it has an uncertain outcome. Meaning: When you only go after what has a certain, predictable result, you don’t get a fraction of the fulfillment from it. If you’re single, it means throwing yourself in the dating wilderness and seeing it not as a chore or a dreaded, horrible thing, but as an adventure.

Explore fantasy. This is what Fifty Shades of Grey did for hundreds of thousands of wives (and husbands, too). It didn’t have to be a literary masterpiece to do what it did: Lured people into the woods of their erotic imaginations. Sure it felt a little wrong—that’s why it worked. Erotica is one way to do it, but even more fun is talking about your own darker urges, and possibly trying them out for real.

Go somewhere a little risky. Skip the tame pool-side excursion and opt for an adrenaline-inspired adventure (whether it’s literally hiking thru the woods, or rock climbing, etc.). You need to be somewhere vastly different than you’ve been. You may bring the partner you have known, but he (or she) may look a little different on the journey. A friend of mine goes away with her husband to far-flung places like Egypt and Peru every year. Seeing him in unfamiliar settings and sharing adventures keeps their relationship alive. If you’re single, take a solo trip. The sheer adventure of travel opens you up to all kinds of romantic interludes.

Create some distance. Perel writes, “There’s a powerful tendency in long-term relationships to favor the predictable over the unpredictable. Yet eroticism thrives on the unpredictable.” Do something out of character. Get dressed up, wear a new perfume, change your hair—whatever. Tell your partner you have plans, but be vague. Or, have him meet you at a restaurant where you haven’t been. Allow some silence, distance, mystery, and you reintroduce a little of the initial chase you had when you were first courting. Let him guess what you’re up to. Be coy. Sly. Inviting. As opposed to, say, peeing with the door open. Start acting like the person you were before you had a partner—the very person he or she was attracted to. Put yourself somewhere where he has to come find you. It’s hard to long for someone when they’re sitting right there. Make him follow you into the woods.

Love Kim Kardashian West’s Style? This Budget-Friendly Line Is Going to Be Your Everything

Over the past few years something chic has been happening to Kim Kardashian West‘s style (and it may or may not have to do with the Kanye closet rehaul that left her in tears). Gone are the loud animal prints and sparkle of her 2009 closet, replaced by sleek, minimalistic outfits in neutral and monochrome palettes. And while the majority of Kim’s actual wardrobe is high-end designer, Australian label Bossa has captured the same vibe with wallet-friendly prices (and the brand ships to the U.S.!).

kim-kardashian-body-suit-pencil-skirt-outfit

Last summer Kim lived in a bodysuit, showing favoritism to the American Apparel style she rocked several times. Bossa’s got an equally steamy version, plus an elongated faux suede pencil skirt that really finishes off the look (the entire outfit will run you a little over $ 150 in U.S. dollars).

kim-kardashian-turtleneck-black-dress

Kim’s LBDs usually hit at her calf, and while some have plunging necklines, others are actually pretty covered up. She foreshadowed this fall’s favorite neckline (get ready for the turtleneck trend!) by rocking a slim-fitting frock with a mock neck. Bossa’s similar version is online here.

kim-kardashian-long-vest-outfit

And while KKW loves her some pencil skirts and tight dresses, she’s also cut a stylish figure in wide-leg trousers. She covered up her creamy pair with a long vest in the same palette, but the look works in contrasting colors too. The Aussie brand created the same ensemble with a tank dress that doubles as a vest when worn open.

The coup de grace for Kim style lovers? There’s a high-gloss pink dress on offer that looks to be very much inspired by the latex looks she’s rocked.

7 Things I Learned on My Journey to True Love

2015-08-19-1439995202-2034426-IMG_7933.jpegAs you may have heard, I met the love of my life through The Huffington Post. Who knew a mouthy manifesto I wrote after a bad post-divorce date would lead me to my very own Magic Mike, a man who makes me giggle like a school girl on HuffPost Live?

Honestly, being struck by lightening and resuscitated by Channing Tatum himself would have seemed more in the realm of possibility.

You see, I have had a black cloud stalking me for decades. At 42, I have done it all… dating (high school, college, adult… oh my!), flings, short-and long-term relationships, tripping down the aisle. Nursing a shattered heart, I convinced myself that I gave birth to the man who would piece me back together. I flirted. I dated. I dreamed. But I didn’t think my soulmate was in the forecast.

Here’s seven things I learned on my terrifyingly dark, unpaved third world country type of road to happiness (chock full of I-need-a-barf-bag-to-deal-with-twists-and-turns moments).

1. It happens when you least expect it. It’s so annoying but it’s so true. If you told me my dream guy would read my post, which was basically designed to rip men a collective new a$ $ , and relate to my rant enough to craft a thoughtful response, I would have laughed. Hell, I would have scoffed. Cackled, maybe. But that’s exactly what happened.

2. Be fierce. Repeatedly striking out in love is a gift. When you f*ck up, you lose your fear of failure. Empowered by my perfectly imperfect track record, I was unabashedly myself when I met Mike. I didn’t sacrifice one ounce of who I am and he adores me anyway.

3. Be open (just not in a prostitute kind of way). Date against type, my friends. I am infatuated with a man I would have discounted under traditional dating circumstances. I am a serial plant killer and he is a gardner extraordinaire. Come football season, we will be screaming for different teams in our living room. We will definitely vote for sparring politicians. But, wow, the synergy, the sparks, the soulful love we have is undeniable.

4. Kiss frogs. Come on now, don’t be shy. Every single frog — even the wart covered ones who get off hearing themselves ribbit — are a value add. They teach you about yourself if you listen. They bring you closer to your proverbial prince.

5. It’s cosmic. Finding true love is a spiritual awakening. It’s intuitive. You just know. When you cross paths with your soulmate, love blooms faster than a celebrity dons extensions after a bad haircut. It’s involuntary.

A soul connection differs from a honeymoon phase type of giddiness. The person is a natural extension of you, without warning, without effort, without compromise. The attraction is wild. When you hold hands, there’s an electric current, there’s a perfect fit. The amount of time you’ve been together doesn’t matter; the time you spent apart does.

6. Haters exist. Some people despise happy endings. They don’t believe in fairytales. Others are jealous. I have a friend who has been dismissive about my relationship since the beginning. Readers have left dozens of negative comments. I knew the first time I spoke to Mike that he was like no other. He understood me without explanation. Trust your gut, the telltale signs, the palpable energy. Haters be damned.

7. Live in hope. I have paid my misery dues for a lifetime. I buried my beautiful mom and filed for divorce months later. I have been lied to, spit on, let down. I have felt excruciating pain. I have been emotionally abandoned. I have lost. I ended relationships that weren’t right even though I knew I would be criticized for my choices. Despite everything, I always basked in the rays of hope. I believed in brighter tomorrows. And, finally, my day has come.

Being in Love

I want to feel joy for joy’s sake
Not wanting to earn it
Or reach it
Or arrive finally at its door
After working
And seeking
After years of wracking pursuit, falling at the threshold
Begging for mercy and entry and somewhere to rest and sleep in peace.

No.

I want to awaken there
Dancing on the head of that pin
Smiling in my sleep
And rising to a peppy dawn
I want to jump up in inspiration for the new day
I want to take pen to paper
And explode upon the page,
my existence on this planet
At this time, at this place, in this body, with this mind, and countenance, and spirit and soul
With these eyeballs, and ears, and fingers, and taste buds, and ability to experience aromas, exotic and sublime, miraculously breathing in and out, and in and out again.

I want my moments of being alive to be a celebration of the moments I get to be alive
Love the people I get to love
Feel the love of those whose energy, flow, willingness for interbeing, makes me somehow feel loved, too.

I want to bathe in child-like wonder
For innocent experience, naked awareness, clear seeing
Present a truer reality
A realization longstanding
A wisdom
Transcendent of deluded mind, frightened mind, ego mind, hurt-child mind
To original mind, mirror-like
and free
I stand, reflecting awe, embracing mystery, curious, openhearted, immersed in the now and loving the opportunity to be in love with this very life.

It’s Never Love at First Draft

Why would anyone want to read the original manuscript of a young writer who subsequently wrote a world-renowned classic, except to trace the development of that writer? Why, upon reading it, would anyone ascribe meaning to that manuscript so as to diminish, question or require a re-thinking of the writer’s fabulously successful published work? That first manuscript served as a waystation on a young writer’s journey to produce her novel, nothing else. It merits no consideration in and of itself.

Harper Lee’s Go Set A Watchman was not given an offer for publication back when it was first submitted to its publisher nearly 50 years ago, for a simple, perfect, reason: It was not good enough. This status quo endured for another simple reason: Harper Lee did not want it published, and her circle of intimates honored her preferences. Most likely, she did not view it as worthy of publication. After all, it was simply a draft and Lee was a champion of great writing.

I can only see one reason why Lee’s Go Set A Watchman found its way to publication in 2015: The self-interest of Lee’s publisher, HarperCollins trumped the author’s own long-standing and well-known preference. It’s hard to believe Ms. Lee cares about money after all these years, although not at all hard to believe that, with the passing of her older sister less than a year ago, who also served her advocate and legal protector, Lee was bullied into agreeing to publication.

It’s easy to imagine why Tay Hohoff, Ms. Lee’s original editor at J.B. Lippincott, worked closely with the then-budding writer to develop the rough manuscript she submitted into a different story. Simply, Ms. Hohoff didn’t believe the original story was worthy of publication, but she believed in the writer’s promise. Ms. Lee had work to do. A lot. The original manuscript may have shared the same locale and some main characters as the published novel, but that’s it. Kudos to the writer, and likely the editor as well, for reshaping instead of abandoning those ingredients and combining them into a masterpiece.

Having recently completed the years-long process of writing a recently published book, I can easily imagine how Harper Lee’s experience as a new writer could have mirrored mine in some way. (Not for a moment would I delude myself by thinking my book’s future will mirror To Kill A Mockingbird.)

I don’t know how many short essays I wrote in the run-up to starting my memoir, some about topics that ended up in the book, many that didn’t. When I finally started writing the memoir itself, I spent a year stringing together sentences and paragraphs before I realized I didn’t know where the story was heading. I couldn’t move it forward. Everywhere I looked, it seemed the action doubled back on itself into a cycle of sameness. I needed help.

Luckily, I found some, in the shape of a writing coach/editor who knew her stuff. A writer so green I needed a formal introduction to phrases like “story arc” (when I first heard the phrase, I thought of rainbow colored paragraphs), I discovered much of the work with my editor, Kelley Eskridge, involved not just writing on my own, but researching ideas and backstory, sketching out possible themes and metaphors, talking, thinking, musing, debating, and yes, even some negotiating.

I’d written one hundred plus pages, tens of thousands of words, and after reading all that, Kelley didn’t know what my story was about. As it turned out, I didn’t either. Was it about rowing? My dysfunctional family? My relationship with my mother?

I probably tossed out more words during my writing process than made it into my memoir. I’m not the only writer for whom that may be true. Much of writing, it turns out, is rewriting.

Go Set A Watchman should not be viewed as another Harper Lee novel, nor even as a precursor to To Kill A Mockingbird. It represented a transitory stage of Lee’s thinking, certainly a stage that she devoted countless hours to constructing, but it was an unfinished product. It was neither well-written nor a gripping story. (I personally found myself bored and unable to connect to any of the characters). It was a draft that held a kernel of a great idea, that an experienced editor saw and helped a novice writer develop to the point of excellence. Maybe the experience killed off Lee’s interest in writing further; maybe the experience satisfied her to the point that she didn’t want to attempt another round; maybe her unpredictably wild success sent her scurrying into lifelong seclusion. We will never really know.

Here’s what we do know: To Kill A Mockingbird is an amazing novel. No matter what Go Set A Watchman says or doesn’t say, no matter how the characters who appear in both stories are presented or misrepresented, the real novel is the one that was originally published, not the one that was originally submitted. What emerged from that early draft, an accumulation of discussion, debate, deep thought, and who knows how many crumpled pages, crossed out words and sentences, deleted paragraphs, rewritten sections, was a masterpiece. That’s what we’ve been reading for nearly fifty years, and that’s all that deserves to be remembered, not the mercenary act of a self-interested publishing house that took advantage of an aging, vulnerable writer.

The Love Story Of Peter Pan And Tinker Bell, As Told By Peter

“Second star to the right!” She called out, laughing.

Her voice carried easily over the autumn wind as we flew above the confusion of lost boys, giggling girls, and parents trying desperately to remember. We were not flying very high, but the lights and people seemed so small and far away that, for the moment at least, the world below us looked like a miniature toy carnival.

“Second star to the right! That’s what it feels like!” She said, and she took my hand in hers, kicking her feet in the air as if running and, throwing her head back, laughing. The wind turned her long hair into a ribbon of fiery gossamer, trailing out behind us.

“No hand holding.” Said the bored voice over the speakers and she dropped my hand with a petulant huff that carried frustration layered with a relief at the easy excuse to let go.

It’s coming soon, I thought sadly. Our reason for being here. Our Goodbye.

Moments later, we slowed, seats gently rocking into one another with creaks and groans as the great spider of machinery lowered its chain web of swings back to earth.

“That is the only ride I want to go on!” She said, jumping out of her seat and launching at me in a fiercely quick hug. She was as exhilarated as I was anxious.

“Let’s go explore,” she said. Then she twirled around, waving me to follow before skipping off on her tippy toed wings into the confusion of cotton candy.

***

Tinker Bell came to me in the midwinter of my twenty seventh year.

I had left Neverland long ago by that time. My life was one of goals and deadlines, of power and responsibility, of control over one’s own destiny. I had grown to see the mantra of “never grow up” for what it was: a cartoon fallacy. I walked away from childhood willingly, eagerly, and as happened so frequently in the stories of the aged, before I realized what I had left behind.

The eternal minutes of years cast my soul into a new body, one that was much larger and slow than my soul remembered. That body was led by a series of unfortunate events to a bleak hospital wing where it paced in the hallway like a madman. As I waited for Death to visit my family as it had when I was a child, I recognized it immediately as the worst and best night of my life. It was in that ward, on December 27th, when she appeared as if by magic, right when I needed her most. I remember the time as if the clock is still hovering in front of me bathed in a pall of blue light. It was 7:04 PM. On that exact day, at that exact time, I looked into the soft, brown eyes of the girl who would become my very deepest love.

When I first kissed her, when she finally- after what felt an eternity- floated into my arms, the rest of the world dimmed, its color draining away for the brightness that was this magical fairy. On that day, I forgot the foolish and false importance of wife, house, and job. I forgot the goals of adulthood- or that there was even such a concept as strange and foreign as “grown-up.”

On that day, I met my Tinker Bell, and she called me back to Neverland.

***

Screams descend from the rickety roller coaster and the caramel scent of kettle corn settles in my throat like a coating of pitch, think and cloying and making me feel as though I am suffocating on sugar. Tinker Bell floats before me, laughing in the rush of kids who call and shout to their friends. She acts for all the world as if this were the only place she was meant to be.

I want nothing more than to be away from this wretched madness. I want quiet. I want space so that I’m not shoved in the back by a dramatically gesticulating seven year old who will just die if he doesn’t get funnel cake. I want to be lying in the dark with Tinker Bell’s head on my chest, listening to her slow dreaming breath as I hold her, gently kiss her head, and try desperately to sleep for a few more minutes before the wine-dark dawn descends. I want to be anywhere but here. But more than that, I want to be with her. And here with her is better than anywhere without her.

So instead of my quiet darkness, we float together through the cacophony of blinking, candy apple lights as I try to draw breath through the thick air, try to smile, and try not to fear.

“What about the Ferris wheel?” I say, pouring as much syrupy happiness into the question as I can manage. “That’s kind of like the swings.”

She looks at me as if I’d just suggested that she eat a large and particularly purple sea creature.

“Ferris wheels are boring!” she groans, and just as I’m about to protest, her face makes its remarkable night-to-day change, radiating a smile that dims the lights around us.

“Let’s go see the animals!” she shrieks, grabbing my hand and skipping forward lightly, pulling me as if I’m a rag doll.

She’s always been able to pull me, magically casting me about like a toy despite her tiny size and my much greater weight, and age. She need only grab my hand and I could be lifted into the sky on her magical fairy dust laughter.

At least, that’s how it had been. Before. Lately, we flew less often. I weighed considerably more these days, and she cast me about considerably less.

But now I can feel her throwing me about, can feel the warmth of her hand in mine, pouring into my arm like sparkles, cascading down and up my spine to make my feet feel light and my hair stand on end.

The power of Tinker Bell’s touch.

I don’t want to let go of her hand. I want to squeeze it, clutch it. I want to pull her towards me and bury her in my arms, to close my eyes and breath the winter scent of her hair as I used to. But instead I look down at her hand holding mine and can see the awkwardness seeping into the corners of my vision like fire eating a picture. As soon as it had started, the moment passes, and she lets my hand fall away.

Such is life with Tinker Bell. Lifetimes of seconds, wrenched away from me as we float above the world. Together and ever growing apart.

The reek of cotton candy slowly gives way to the dark, earthy scent of straw and manure as the shouldering crowds are replaced with tiny shrieks and strollers creaking in mud ruts. Tinker Bell skips ahead with a laugh and I look at the hand she released, suddenly heavy with it’s great ring of guilt.

There is a woman wearing my guilt ring’s pair. A woman who is sitting at home doing something wonderfully mundane, like reading Jane Eyre for the 137th time, or cooking kale and lentil soup with the burner on high and way too much cumin. She is a woman connected to me by years of love and awkwardly unspoken distances. A woman humming a Lucy Kaplansky song to herself while her husband floats through a blinking, shrieking Neverland with his fairy girl.

I can feel the weight of this guilt pressing down on my shoulders and head like a wet, wool blanket, muggy in its damp, accusatory heat.

It is this weight, I think to myself, that makes me too heavy for Tinker Bell to cast about anymore. But even as I think it, I know it’s not true. It’s not my fear and guilt that is pulling her away. It is her.

She is changing.

As much as could be expected from a girl. And such is the price you pay when you fall so deeply in love with someone so young.

***

Despite my best efforts to be a better person, the sight of ducks and sheep makes me think of food.

“We could get something to eat,” I suggest, unsurprised at the slight crack in my voice that I’m pretty sure only I heard.

She speaks, and something about meat and gluten is lost in the sudden honking of a donkey who has had just quite enough pulling on that particular ear, thank you very much.

“Well,” I say, trying to make my voice into the epitome of an ironic joke, “you don’t want to ride, and you don’t want to eat. I’m not sure what we’re doing here.”

Despite my attempt at feigning humor, I sound how I feel: petulant and whiney. She rises from petting a white angora bunny and looks at me with eyes full of confusion and concern, and only very lightly sprinkled with hurt.

“I wanted to spend time with you.” She says. “Just with you.”

She tilts her head slightly in the way that has always announced a thought on the verge of a decision, then she smiles and brushes my lips with a quick and quiet kiss so tender that it feels like she is dressing a wound.

Maybe, I think, she is dressing a wound, a great wrenching wound of choices and betrayal. And my face flushes with embarrassment and that heavy weight of wet, hot guilt.

The truth is this: As much as I love my wife, her life would be forfeit for the life of my Tinker Bell. It hardly matters that she would likely say the same- she has the same conflicts and demons, the same choices. The thought of those choices fills me with warmth, and love, and wretched self-loathing.

Tinker Bell, oblivious, aware, giggling, flutters to the maligned donkey to stroke it gently, calming it in that way she has of calming everything she touches. She smiles and skips and laughs, flying from animal to animal as if breakfast never happened, as if the earthquake never shook her heart, as if her world didn’t come tumbling down around her over mustard and basil omelets and stupid-for-gods-sake-why-does-everything-have-to-be-called-heirloom tomato slices.

Unlike me, she is happy. She can be happy because she is young. Today is a goodbye, and this type of goodbye is easy for the young. In a sense, this type of goodbye is the entire purpose of being young, and it never catches the young by surprise.

It caught me by surprise, though. Springing out of no-where at breakfast- at least I saw it at breakfast. Looking back, it’s obvious now that it really started the moment I first laid eyes on her.

How long since I’ve felt the weight of her pressed down happily on my lap? How long since she carelessly threw her arms around my neck, knowing that if she lost her balance, I would catch her? How long since I had a stolen moment of her love in evening’s quiet darkness?

Yet this morning, as if the past were a mythical land where forgetting was sugar, she graced me with sweetness. This morning, she came to me and, tasting her careless love, I wept inside for its sudden bitter tinge.

It was on her tongue as well. Squirming uncomfortably on the lap she used to rest on so well. Telling jokes to laugh about instead of kissing my stubbled cheek. Sitting awkwardly, as if trying to finish a distasteful chore. She would never admit it, but she tasted the bitterness as strongly as I.

That moment on my lap, unlike countless moments before, was different. Something had changed- she had changed. From the dark closet of her young mind was pulled an invisible gown of realization that, once donned, could never be stripped from her. We both felt that garment on her, together, in that same, shimmering moment.

Suddenly, she bolted off of my lap, turning in a dramatic show to suggest that we “do something fun” and that we “spend time together.” Awkwardness darkening the scene like spilled ink.

***

And so we ended up here, Tinker Bell and her Peter, floating from the petting zoo back to the chaos of cotton candy, as I try to carry this weight of guilt and search for my happy thought that will keep me flying.

But I can’t find my happy thought because the only thought I have is that Tinker Bell is leaving me forever. The only thought I have is the knowledge that things are… different.

“Let’s go in the funhouse!” I say, less for an honest suggestion than as a dressing to staunch the flow of my tears.

“Ha!” She barks, throwing her head back. “There’s no way you’re getting me in there with you!”

I just begin the descent into the cavern of her insinuation when a voice calls out to her, using her birth name.

“Cecilia! Cecilia!”

Tinker Bell turns, smiling.

“Hi, Alexa!” She beams, and the two girls dive into a pool of conversation- about boys, and music, and Jenny McIntyre’s red suede pumps- as if they had been swimming together in the words for the past half hour.

Feeling as substantial as a ghost, I dissolve into the funhouse to join my brethren of forgotten specters. The irony of the dark cavern filled with crooked, rubber skeletons and scratchy speakers howling their silly groans and wails is actually soothing. I trudge through tight corridors lit in sickly green, barely aware of the fright that I am expected to feel, but growing ever more afraid as I come closer to the exit that will eject me back into the real world where things really are scary and confusing.

I pop out of the funhouse at the same time as two boys who squeeze roughly past on the staircase, weaving through the crowd like gazelles to bound off for another rapid adventure. When I reach the girls, who are still somewhere in the middle of a conversation in a foreign language, it becomes apparent that I was not missed.

“I can’t,” Tinker Bell says, nodding to me as if I had not just returned, “I’m here with my dad.”

“Hello, Alexa.” I say, and I note that I sound as strangely old and formal as every parent who’s ever talked with a child’s friend.

“Hi Mister C,” she says, turning back to her recruitment mission even before she hits “mister.” “Cecilia, you have to come! He asked about you!”

Tinker Bell groans and, for the first time, looks uncertain and afraid.

That, I think, is my cue. This is our goodbye.

“You should go, sweetie,” I choke.

It isn’t what I want to say. Even buried in the tomb-green lights of the funhouse, I wanted to come up with something more meaningful. I wanted to say something like: It’s all different now, you’re different. My lap is no longer your favorite seat. I can’t sleep holding my little girl as she breaths on my chest. I’m no longer your Peter Pan, my love, and it’s time for you to be another’s Tinker Bell. It’s different now, and even if you won’t admit it, I have to. That is my role, to tell you that it’s okay, that it’s time for you to fly away. But I want you to know, my sweet, magical pixie, that I will always be here for you, if ever your wings get tired.

I wanted to say this, to tell her of my love for her, to lift her in a hug and smell her hair one last time, but I’ve left Neverland. I’ve become a grown-up and grown-ups are cowards who hide their truths in platitudes, so I cover a sudden choking sob with a yawn and say:

“Go on, sweetie, go meet this charming prince of yours. I’m pretty tired anyway. Have fun and call us if you need a ride home.”

Delighted terror drifts down from the Ferris wheel as she looks at me, head tilted in lights that turn her hair into a copper flame that singes my heart.

“I love you daddy,” she whispers, throwing her arms around my neck and kissing my cheek quickly. I breath in her winter scent as she lets go and flies away on her tippy toed wings into the confusion of cotton candy.

She never turns back to see the tears fall to the cheeks of her aged Peter.

THRILLERS Are The Epitome Of Summer Love With Debut EP ‘Cotton Candy Kisses’

Los Angeles’ newest music sensation and blood-brother duo, THRILLERS, are taking the hipster culture by storm with their debut EP, “Cotton Candy Kisses.”

Summer love is the most obvious thought when initially listening to the mixture of funky ’80s synth-pop beats, sexy guitar riffs and harmonizing male vocals heard throughout this body of work. The six somewhat nostalgic songs take you to a place of happiness. Beginning with the track “Desire”, which is the flame lighter, if you will, continuing with dance your heart out tracks such as “Can’t Get Enough” and “Sugar Love” and, of course, ending in summer splitsville with the classic ballad, “Lipstick on the Mirror.” I’m in musically lovers land with all the tracks on repeat!

Although Gregory and Jeremy Pearson are not yet household names, I’m predicting the world will get well-acquainted with THRILLERS in 2015. After all, they have already established their own indie label, TASTE. Recordings.

Jam out to THRILLERS indie, new wave, lo-fi R&B goodness “Cotton Candy Kisses” on SoundCloud:

Raising Our Vibration by Doing the Things We Love

I think we’re going to start to see more and more of the phrase “raising your vibration” in the coming years, the New Age movement has adapted to this idea fully, and personally a lot of the mentors and therapists I have spent time with in the last year alone, all have agreed that in order for us to step into our true potential, we need to find what works for us when it comes to raising our own vibrational frequencies.

The idea is simple. At any given time we either feel good or bad, but by raising our frequencies we are able to hold onto feeling good for a longer period of time, until one day we find ourselves in a space that truly resonates with who we are as spiritual beings. The road to such high frequencies is dependent on how much pain and turmoil we are storing within our hearts.

Over the last three years, since the inception of my own spiritual journey, I have come across countless techniques and methods of feeling better, thinking better, creating the life of my dreams, and so on. Very few of those techniques are with me today. I have found that simple is better, whilst hard is about using force to attain an end result. It’s suicide.

I have spent the better part of this beautiful Sunday to write an in-depth article of over 3,000 words that takes a look at my own personal experiences of raising my vibration, and what I have found to work the best for myself.

I titled this post “How to Raise Your Vibration in a New World” and published it on my blog SkillCode. Please follow the links to get to the article, since republishing such a lengthy post on Huffington Post is an impossible task.

To save you some time, here are the things I discuss in the post:

  • Meditation
  • Loving yourself
  • Exercise
  • Gratitude
  • Intention
  • Mastery
  • Workshops
  • Therapy
  • Nature
  • Diet
  • Distraction

If any of those felt like you could learn more about, please follow along to my full post and explore it deeper, happy to answer any questions.

Love Is Blind. Until You See Your Ex Again!

2015-07-01-1435779013-8857339-Marina.png
Art world celebrity/performance artist Marina Abramovic (who by the way is now art directing for Givenchy) indirectly provided this subliminal setting to a music video you’re about to witness — if not already — from her “The Art Is Present” show in 2010 at the MoMA. Back then, her live art performance consisted of spending one minute of silence, sitting just across from a complete stranger, with the goal of triggering whatever emotions each subject, including herself, would bring. Several strangers took part, but it’s her response to one in particular that you’re about to hold back tears or reach for the tissue paper.

Fast-forward or should I say, refresh to today, against the backdrop of music by Nashville musicians How I Became The Bomb, who capture on their song, “Ulay, Oh” the emotional story of former lovers Marina Abramovic and a surprise stranger — in this case her ex Ulay’s — first encounter after the two separated more than 30 years ago. You’ll know which stranger he is just by the emotional outpour from Marina, but watch closely at the 1:30 minute mark.

News Flash: love is still our strongest emotion! Currently racking up over 19 million youtube views, and that’s only within one month, this video is indeed touching. But it shouldn’t be surprising, even though some won’t get it. Those who do, the majority of us who’ve been loved, loved someone, been in love or just are longing, know that these emotions aren’t necessarily just reserved for romantic relationships either. In fact, Ulay in this case, could’ve well been a runaway child now found, a once absent biological father, the list goes on. As a result, the song took off totally organically and reached Billboard’s Top 100 (#58) last week. Like many videos out there, nothing was manipulated to make this go viral. Uploaded last October and just sitting there waiting for people to find it, the song was created by the band after the lead singer and main composer, Jon Burr accidentally wandered into MoMA during “The Artist Is Present” and saw the footage later, wrote the song, then contacted Marina for permission to use the footage for the band’s video.

2015-07-01-1435778944-6500658-MarinaUlay.png
Could it soon be the anti-“Gangnam Style” viral video of the summer? Most don’t bring this level of catharsis to viewers, unless of course we’re talking about practice, or it comes to those skillful cats. Who knows, maybe it boils down to ‘Love vs Cats’! Then again, there could always be another dress gone viral that causes us all to go blind.

Love and War in the WRNS

Sheila Mills came from a sheltered middle class upbringing before she joined the WRNS in 1940. The working life of a women’s naval officer in the Second World War was a hard one. The discipline and trials of living and working as a ‘Wren’ plunged her head first into a life of bed bugs, last minute travel, secrecy and huge responsibility. But while Sheila met with hard and exciting work during one of the world’s most dangerous conflicts, she also found love, friendship, fun and the human spirit. Her fascinating encounters, assignments, events and, of course, the many loves she found or lost, are all seen through her eyes in this lively collection of letters home. A unique insight into the coming of age of a young girl in the 1940s, Sheila’s letters will have readers laughing – and crying – at the extraordinary life of a young girl who travelled all over the world and witnessed key events in the War.

Celebrate Love and Equality at Pride Music Festival in San Diego

2015-07-02-1435876581-6502834-Pride.jpg

The art of change is one that occurs slowly, its early brushstrokes seemingly unclear except to the eyes of its believers. As the painting becomes more complete, a vision begins to materialize, a vision that many saw all along. When true change finally occurs, a masterpiece is unveiled. The United States of America has seen many changes over the past decade, but one of the most colorfully celebrated is the 2015 Supreme Court ruling that made same-sex marriage a constitutional right (which it always has been) nationwide.

Pride celebrations began long before this ruling and will continue on long after. However, the timing is impeccable as the pride celebrations are just a little more special this time around. San Diego Pride is proud to present Pride Music Festival, the San Diego region’s biggest and most grandiose music festival celebrating diversity and equality. This epic event will unite over 40,000 people over two days from across the nation to celebrate, rejoice, dance, and of course, share love.

In addition to being a massive city-wide party, this event also supports dozens of charitable organizations and has raised and donated over $ 2 million over the years. The surrounding neighborhoods as well as the city and county of San Diego have long supported Pride Music Festival because of its respectful and excellent reputation for safety. Among many other things, Pride Music Festival will feature an open-air art gallery, food trucks, craft beers, spirits and more than 200 exhibitor and vendor booths. There is also a VIP section available which offers a VIP entrance, restrooms, catered food, and four hosted drinks each day.

Providing the pulse of Pride Music Festival will be five electronic and live music stages sprinkled amid the lush greenery of San Diego’s Balboa Park during the weekend of July 18th-19th. The recently unveiled lineup includes current dance, pop, hip-hop, Latin and many other genres of music such as Emma Hewitt, Late Night Alumni, Mary Lambert, Ruby Rose, Pierce Fulton and Taryn Manning, just to name a few. Even Carmen Electra will be showing her support by hosting the mainstage on day 1, keeping attendees rallied.

The 2015 theme is “Liberty and Justice For All,” a true call-to-action for equality not just in the U.S., but globally. “It’s a memorable experience to unite with thousands of people, taking pride in who you are and celebrating each other,” said executive director Stephen Whitburn. “Pride Music Festival is for everyone.”

Music festivals are currently one of the strongest uniting forces in popular culture. Combining the unity of a music festival and the power of the Pride movement creates a unique and unforgettable experience that will keep this event alive for years to come. Pride Music Festival 2015 will not only be an epic party, but a beautiful moment in history shared even by those who cannot attend. It will represent a time when the voices of millions were finally heard, where full acceptance and equality are not just possible but necessary, and when an entire nation finally shares this same freedom. Under the warm San Diego sun, humans will dance and celebrate together united beneath the banner of love.

Food Is Love

Food Is Love

Modern advertising has changed dramatically since the early twentieth century, but when it comes to food, Katherine Parkin writes, the message has remained consistent. Advertisers have historically promoted food in distinctly gendered terms, returning repeatedly to themes that associated shopping and cooking with women. Foremost among them was that, regardless of the actual work involved, women should serve food to demonstrate love for their families. In identifying shopping and cooking as an expression of love, ads helped to both establish and reinforce the belief that kitchen work was women’s work, even as women’s participation in the labor force dramatically increased. Alternately flattering her skills as a homemaker and preying on her insecurities, advertisers suggested that using their products would give a woman irresistible sexual allure, a happy marriage, and healthy children. Ads also promised that by buying and making the right foods, a woman could help her family achieve social status, maintain its racial or ethnic identity, and assimilate into the American mainstream. Advertisers clung tenaciously to this paradigm throughout great upheavals in the patterns of American work, diet, and gender roles. To discover why, Food Is Love draws on thousands of ads that appeared in the most popular magazines of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, including the Ladies’ Home Journal, Good Housekeeping, Ebony, and the Saturday Evening Post. The book also cites the records of one of the nation’s preeminent advertising firms, as well as the motivational research advertisers utilized to reach their customers.

War: 1 a) armed hostilities between esp. nations; conflict(war broke out; war zone). b) a specific conflict or the period of time during which such conflict exists(was before the war). c) the suspension of international law etc. during such a conflict. Weapons, guns, swords, archers, horses, canons, dogs, etc, etc. Only one thing here is actually of import: kill the enemy. That is war. This time though, it’s different. You see, even though we live in this world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not weapons of this world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. Yes, ‘Love Weight’ Is A Real Thing

If you find yourself gaining weight once you’re in a relationship, you’re not alone. A recent study that compared the body mass indexes of singles to spouses found that, on average, coupled people had higher BMIs than people who were single.

Scientists from across Europe analyzed data from over 10,000 people in Austria, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Spain and the U.K. They found that while the average single man had a BMI of 25.7, the average married man had a BMI of 26.3. The average single lady had a BMI of 25.1, while the average married woman had a BMI of 25.6.

For reference, a BMI of 25 or higher is considered overweight; a BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese.

The study doesn’t explain why there are weight differences between married and single people, but lead author Jutta Matta of the University of Basel said that her findings did support what scientists called the “Marriage Market Hypothesis.” That is, once you’ve found a mate and are “off the market,” there’s less incentive for you to invest in your looks by keeping your weight down. For instance, said Matta, in countries with high divorce rates, married people have lower BMIs than married people in countries with a low divorce rate. Perhaps this is because those who live in a high-divorce culture understand that there’s a higher chance they’ll return to the “marriage market.”

Counterintuitively, marrieds reported buying more organic and fair trade food, as well as more local and unprocessed food, compared to singles. That means they were probably eating healthier meals or at least eating more consciously than singles, but the better diet didn’t translate into healthier weight, on average.

Part of it may have to do with the fact that husbands reported doing less exercise than single men, Matta said. It could also be because marrieds, on average, said that they paid less attention to the amount of fat in their food as well as their own body weights.

Previous research, most notably a smaller 2013 study, found that the happier a couple was, the more weight spouses gained in the first years of their marriage.

A few extra pounds doesn’t mean there’s anything unhealthy about marriage. Quite the opposite, in fact: a large body of evidence supports the conclusion that marriage is linked to many health benefits (which makes the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on gay marriage all the more exciting). Happily married people are more likely to live longer, have overall better health, have stronger bones and are less likely to have heart attacks.

Matta advises couples who struggle with their weight to take advantage of the fact that they have someone with whom they can share resources and goals. In most instances, married couples have more resources than single people, which they can use toward a shared goal of healthier habits, she concluded.

Love Wins For You And Me

The United State Supreme Court ruled today for same sex marriage to be legal nationwide, and as I read the various articles telling this wonderful truth, I told my son to come into the living room. The sun was shining through our window and his gray eyes glistened and grew bigger as I sat him down and told him that I had something very important to tell him. As he stared at me, wondering what was going on, I told him that, as an almost-6-year old, he would remember today. Today is the day that history was made in the United States. I explained to him that now, men could marry men and women could marry women. His response was telling and simple: “That’s great, Mama. People who love one another can now spend their lives together.” He summed it up perfectly and went back to play. It IS great. People can spend their lives together. It’s that simple truth, echoed in his response to me. Love really did win today. It won for us all.

I was allowed to marry because I’m a woman and I married a man. My husband and I celebrated our 13 year wedding anniversary this week, and with every year that passed, I often thought about the many people who wanted to marry but could not. When we were out to dinner, my husband reached for my hand — my hand with my wedding rings and his hand with his tattooed band crossed across the table and we sat and connected, celebrating our marriage. This sanctity of marriage, this connection despite the difficulties, is what has sustained me and our lives together. We reminisced about our past, talked about the kids, and dreamed about our future. But this hand holding really sat with me all week — this connection and our commitment to one another, symbolized by our wedding bands crossing together.

When he reached for my hand that night, I flashed back over the past 20 years in that one gesture. As we drove back home with the top down, the wind blowing in my hair and the setting sun’s rays hitting my back, I remembered our past — the 13 years married and the seven years before that. I remembered how I left my high school prom with a wild, blonde-haired boy driving his cousin’s Mustang convertible and how that started a 20 year love affair. How we named our daughter on a dark country road, driving with the windows down, 18 years before she was even born. How he traveled the world and so did I, but how we ended up back together, somehow. How I walked down a long pier to a submarine hatch to deliver him dinner pre-9/11. How we finally were married (after what seemed like an eternity but wasn’t) and how amazing it felt to be connected to someone in that way.

All of that has turned into a legacy that we have created, together. We traveled together, married. We moved together, married. We built a life together, married. We have had two beautiful children together, married. My marriage is a gift and sometimes, it is work, hard work. But all the best things are. Marriage isn’t always perfect and it certainly isn’t a decision everyone should make or that everyone even wants to make. It’s a choice, and one that I’m so happy everyone is now free to make. Love wins today for all.

6 Ways to Get More Love in Your Life

The Beatles said it best: “Love is all you need.” But do you feel you have enough love in your personal life? According to a 2010 survey by the Fetzer Institute, 68 percent of Americans say they need more meaningful love in their lives and 95 percent believe that we need more love in the world.

Since love is one of the most basic human emotions, how can it be that so many of us find it lacking in our lives? We see the word “love” used everywhere these days in advertising for material goods like hamburgers, cars, shoes, eyeglasses and cosmetics. But the genuine love that so many of us long for in our lives involves so much more than the excitement we feel over our favorite footwear.

True love is a powerful, creative force that can inspire humans to write symphonies, trek for months on foot, build a massive mausoleum, and make superhuman sacrifices. But love also leaves us feeling vulnerable and opens us up to possible rejection. Love requires courage, patience and effort, which are difficult to maintain in our fast-paced, superficial society.

While many of us are searching for romantic love, remember that true love comes in many different forms and circumstances. Getting more love in your life requires more than dating tips; you’ll have to work at it and make some inner changes to find love that has deeper meaning. Here are some steps you can take to help you cultivate true love:

# 1. Love Yourself First

Before you can share love with others you have to feel it within yourself. That means you need to find practices and routines that help you genuinely love who you are, just as you are right now.

Try taking yourself on a “date” once a week and spend time alone, doing something you thoroughly enjoy. For example:

  • Linger with a latte and a good book at your favorite coffee shop

  • Take a walk in nature

  • Visit an art gallery or museum that inspires you

  • Attend a concert

  • Watch a video about love

As you spend this time with yourself, focus your intention on truly loving YOU and filling yourself up with positive feelings and energy. The more you concentrate on loving yourself the more you will radiate positive feelings of love toward others and attract their love in return.

#2. Recognize Your Barriers to Love

The Sufi poet and philosopher Rumi wrote: “Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.”

Whether you realize it or not, you may have barriers hidden within you that prevent you from giving and receiving love. Perhaps you have been hurt or betrayed by a past relationship or you fear being vulnerable to other people.

Spend some time in contemplation and write in your journal about your past experiences with love and how you feel about giving yourself over to love. Once you identify your own internal barriers to love you will be able to heal your wounds from the past and rise above them. This is an important step if you want to deepen your ability to genuinely love others.

#3 Practice the Lovingkindness Blessing

This Buddhist blessing (also called “Metta”) can be a powerful reminder to love yourself and others if you use it as a daily practice. Here are the five phrases of the blessing:

  • May I be at peace.

  • May my heart remain open.

  • May I realize the beauty of my own true nature.

  • May I be healed.

  • May I be a source of healing for this world.

Repeat this blessing every day as part of your daily practice and you will begin to feel your heart expanding with compassion for yourself and others. Next change the “I” in each phrase to “you” and use the blessing to send love to someone else.

#4. Give For the Sake of Giving

One of the best ways to bring more love into your life is to give your time and energy to others who need your help. Volunteer at an animal shelter, Head Start program, homeless shelter, or nursing home and you will find ample opportunities to share your love with others who need to be loved.

When you give of yourself with no expectation of return, you will find that you are blessed in many ways and love will begin flowing through you freely. You will begin to attract others into your life who can appreciate your loving and generous behavior.

#5. Open Your Heart

The HeartMath Institute teaches a simple method for opening your heart to love called the Inner Ease Technique. Use this practice as part of your daily routine (along with the Lovingkindness Blessing) and you will soon be able to overcome the barriers to love you have identified. Here are the steps:

  • Place your hand on your heart area and imagine you are breathing in and out through your heart.

  • Breathe slowly and gently until your breathing feels smooth and balanced, not forced.

  • With each breath draw in a feeling of inner-ease, balance and self-love into your heart.

You can do this practice in any place at any time to reduce anxiety and open yourself up to others.

#6. Find Love In Every Situation

As you open your heart to love and expand your capacity to express love for yourself and others, you will begin to see love everywhere you go. Then love can become your “default mechanism” so that you will choose love whenever you are in a situation of doubt or uncertainty.

For example, if a conflict arises with coworkers or a friend, choose the solution that contains the most love. If you face a crisis and must decide on your next steps, let love be your guide. When you need to give feedback to another person, be motivated by love rather than anger.

As you practice embodying love in your life in various ways, you will discover that you have always had all the love you need — you just couldn’t see it before. When you become a walking, talking vision of love you will become irresistible to other people who will be drawn to you by your beautiful presence.

The entire world will benefit from the love you put into practice, as you radiate love out to others and create more happiness and joy wherever you go. The love the world needs is right there inside you — now, go find it!

Last week Michelle Obama, with daughters Malia and Sasha and mother Marian Robinson, set off on a goodwill cultural tour of England and Italy. On the six-day trip, which the First Lady used to promote the Let Girls Learn and Let’s Move initiatives, Obama wore European and American designers, reminding us of why we can’t get enough of her personal style. It was like 2008 all over again, when Obama first hit the scene and major fashion crushes ensued.

After her time in the U.K., Obama and family jetted off to Milan, where she discussed her Let’s Move initiative. She arrived in a fit-and-flare custom Duro Oluwu dress, with Sasha in a seersucker American Apparel dress, and Malia in heather gray.

On her second day in Milan, Obama wore a Missoni knit dress as she toured the U.S. Pavilion at the Milan Expo. “It was a beautiful surprise,” Angela Missoni told WWD upon learning the FLOTUS chose the striped dress for the trip. “It’s a beautiful thing; it’s the first time she has been photographed wearing a dress from an Italian brand,” added Missoni.

After receiving some flak for wearing only European designers on her tour, Obama chose a red shirtdress by American designer Michael Kors. The patriotic look, paired with simple black flats, was perfect for the baby shower Obama threw for moms-to-be who were stationed at the U.S. and NATO military base in Venice.

Later, Obama toured Venice, visiting the U.S. Pavillon of the Venice Biennale venue, wearing a V-neck sleeveless floral-print dress. She teamed the bold number with black gladiator sandals.

On the last day of the trip, Obama went with a kimono-sleeve dress and metallic sandals. Malia and Sasha chose wide-strap shift dresses, dainty necklaces, and simple flats.

25 Unmistakable Signs He’s in Love With You

By Jillian Kramer, Glamour

Some signs of true love are subtle. Others? Well, they all but hit you over the head with obviousness. If you’re blissfully happy and searching for signs that your guy is hooked on you too, these 25 signs will make it crystal clear.

1. He actually listens when you give him a 20-minute-long play-by-play of a dramatic situation with your work frenemy.

2. He doesn’t suggest you go brush your teeth before he kisses you good morning.

3. He initiates cuddling that doesn’t lead to sex.

4. He’s introduced you to all his friends — and when you met them, they already knew where you work and that you love Swedish fish.

5. He’s introduced you to his parents (or wants to).

6. He texts you just to say “Good morning” or “I’m thinking about you.”

7. He never misses the chance to tell you “Good night,” even if he’s out with the guys.

8. He’s prone to saying corny, eye-roll-inducing things such as, “You have the most beautiful smile.”

9. He puts you first. Think: accepting the invite to your friend’s engagement party on the night his favorite team is playing — without so much as a mention of it.

10. He’s equal parts proud and ever-so-slightly jealous when another man hits on you.

11. Forget talking about tomorrow, he’ll say things like, “Next summer, we should…” and doesn’t hesitate to put plans on the books for months in advance.

12. He gives you the remote more often than he hogs it.

13. He saves the last bite of any delicious meal just for you.

14. He asks to sign the cards you send to your mother.

15. When you’re in bed with killer cramps, he runs to the drugstore for tampons and painkillers.

16. All it takes is a single smile aimed in his direction, and this man can’t stay mad at you.

17. Whether he’s prepping for a big meeting or simply picking out his tie, he likes to get your opinion.

18. He cares whether you orgasm — and learns what it takes to make it happen.

19. That thing you mentioned in passing you just had to have? Don’t buy it — he already snagged two for you.

20. He’s bookmarked a GIFs site so he can randomly send you messages that make you smile.

21. He puts his phone away when you’re around.

22. He teases you in ways that feel funny, not mean.

23. He’s saved every card and note you’ve ever given him. Heck, he even has a sliver of wrapping paper from your first-ever gift exchange.

24. He tells everyone he knows when you have a life achievement of any kind.

25. He says, “I love you” every day, and you believe him.

Tristan Prettyman: From Sad Love Songs to Sweet Lullabies?

2015-06-21-1434927013-4366315-405B6732.jpg

Tristan Prettyman’s initial singing and songwriting success has been attributed to her audience’s huge response to her sadness and heartache. Prettyman’s hit songs shared an authentic vulnerability in which listeners could relate.

So how will her fans identify with the jubilantly in love and now pregnant version of their Prettyman?

“At first I felt scared to be happy, then I felt guilty for being so happy, ” Prettyman shared with me. “Once I was able to accept that I deserve this joy with a good man I realized that my audience would hopefully relate to this part of my life experience, too.”

Prettyman expressed her willingness to share the ups and downs of her emotional life openly and honestly with her fans as the only way she can just be herself. Following her heart has been the story of Prettyman’s life.

A self-taught guitar player, by the time she entered college, Prettyman was encouraged by family and friends to play and share her music in her hometown of San Diego. She embraced her love of music and performing and moved fearlessly into the music world in her 20’s.

Whether it was her early years selling CD’s from a coffee cart, jumping at a chance to go on tour or getting engaged in 2014 to her now husband venture capitalist Bill Maris, Prettyman lives life wholeheartedly. Her life story seems to be a perfect combination of luck, timing and lots of hard work.

This next chapter of melding motherhood into her musical life is still a bit of a mystery to Prettyman. At age 33, (hubby’s 40) and always wanting a family, she is absolutely delighted to be pregnant. She thought that during her pregnancy (due in August- it’s a boy!) she would be bursting with creative ideas and spending days writing music. So far she has yet to write one note of music and lightheartedly confesses that perhaps all of her creative energy is momentarily being directed at baby making. This experience reaffirms Prettyman’s belief that music and creativity happens on its own–organically.

But just because she’s not creating new music doesn’t mean she’s not performing. Prettyman has been performing throughout her pregnancy and when I met her in May at BottleRock in Napa, California, the growing belly did not seem to slow her down or stifle her guitar playing.

“Being the best version of myself as a mother and role model for my son is important to me now,” she told me. “Writing music, singing and playing guitar has always fed my soul. My happiest times have always been when I am making music and I plan to continue to write and play and perform after the baby.”

Prettyman describes her life as a constant reminder to stay on one’s own timeline and stay true to whatever one’s heart desires. Just as her beginner dive into the world of music, Prettyman feels the same excitement now being pregnant for the first time and about to have a child. Prettyman wants to dispel any stereotype that as a woman she will leave her music career because she has children.

“While it is different for every woman, I want to honor the process as it comes, to slow down and be present and be in the moment and honor this special time. And perhaps write a lullaby or two for the new baby,” Prettyman said.

This Summery Recipe Will Inspire Your Love Life

2015-06-18-1434671234-8846846-SfDarlingsShrimpSFPoste1352419321376.jpg

You know the saying, “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.” Of course that goes for women as well. One of the most intimate things that we can do is prepare a meal with love. Couples that try new things enjoy a deeper connection, so making something together in the kitchen may help you feel more connected in your relationship. If you want to try something new that’s fun to do with your sweetie, why not cook for each other?

Cooking has always inspired my desire. Making something delicious for your amour is a good recipe for a better love life. You can learn a lot about each other by cooking. For instance, a man that takes his time, using his senses to select fresh ingredients, delicately tasting to know its flavor— he may be a great lover as he pays close attention to his darling’s responses with epicurean skill. My theory? As in the kitchen, so in the bedroom. But you don’t need to be an expert chef to arouse your beloved. With just a few essential ingredients you can make ordinary grub into glorious gourmet.

Let’s start with a simple summer recipe. This particular dish was made by a lover and it won my heart. In the moment of watching him clean and cook shrimp I already knew that he was attentive. The care he put into whisking the dressing and chopping up herbs until fine made my body simmer. By the time I took one bite my eyes rolled back in orgasmic delight. When cooking for each other, keep in mind it can be absolute foreplay.

Needless to say, cooking for each other is a preamble to lovemaking. I’m not just suggesting you two have a quickie on the countertop after fixing a sandwich. Have but a taste of your sugar after you’ve (ahem) laid your ingredients out à la mise en place. Just don’t knock over the mise all over le place while you’re going for more and more amour.

SUMMER SHRIMP IN MOJITO DRESSING
with Watermelon, Corn and Cucumber Salsa

Your sensual summer rendezvous will be oh-oh-oh-lala once you’ve tasted this delicious recipe, Summer Shrimp in Mojito Dressing. If you love succulent shrimp, juicy watermelon, crunchy cucumber and mint with cilantro, then this is the perfect dish for your romantic afternoon à deux.

For this recipe you will need:

1 pound colossal shrimp, peeled and deveined
1 hothouse cucumber, diced
2 cups seedless watermelon, diced
1 ear corn, husk and silk removed, kernels cut off
¼ cup fresh cilantro leaves, lightly packed
¼ cup fresh mint leaves, lightly packed
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon honey
2 tablespoons shallot, minced
1 clove garlic, minced
dash sea salt and black pepper
Juice squeezed from 1 lime

The kitchen is the new bedroom, so wear nothing but an apron like it’s lingerie (or a loincloth) and begin the seduction. Take your darling by the hand and lure them into the kitchen so they can watch you cook. Pour your loving voyeur a glass of rosé or bubbly. You want to get them in the mood for good food and arouse their senses. Offer a nibble of Kalamata olives or grapes while they wait. It worked for Roman orgies, didn’t it? Food foreplay for your god or goddess is tantamount to tickling their tongue with a kiss.

Now first, devein the shrimp. Hold your paring knife firmly and carefully cut along the vein of the shrimp. Repeat for all the shrimp until complete. If you aren’t sure how to devein shrimp without making a mess of them, purchase deveined shrimp from your local seafood market. This isn’t the time to feel anything less than confident while you make such a romantic gesture.

Next, prepare your prawns for quivering pink plumpness in hot water. You’ll have a medium pot of salted water simmering for these little beauties. Add the shrimp and cook until flesh is pink and opaque, about 2 minutes. Remove from heat (with a mesh sieve if you have it) and rinse under cool water until shrimp are room temperature. Set the cooked shrimp aside as you prepare the salsa and dressing.

Strap your apron around your waist and flirt while you chop up fresh bunches of mint and cilantro. Do not be shy when it comes to making dressing from scratch. Of course, undressing each other slowly is exciting, but homemade dressing for this recipe makes it zing. Chop the herbs with a seductive glance here and there, but don’t take your focus off your knife skills or you’ll be headed to the ER instead of the boudoir.

Once you’ve chopped up your green herbs, scoop them into a bowl with the cup of your hand. If your sweetie likes how fragrant your hands smell after doing this, caress your lover’s face and give them a slow kiss. The scent of a chef at work is an aphrodisiac. Then put the cilantro, mint, olive oil, garlic, shallot, sea salt, pepper, honey and lime juice in the work bowl of a food processor or blender. Blend until herbs are finely chopped. This is your Mojito dressing.

2015-06-18-1434671323-7007870-SFMojitoDressing02638x1024.jpg

Now for the watermelon, cucumber and corn salsa.

Kiss your sweetheart again and reach for your cucumber with one hand. Cube the cucumber and place it in a bowl. Then hold the watermelon and slice it open. Cut the watermelon into bite-sized cubes. You’ll need two cups of watermelon and one hothouse cucumber all cubed in a bowl. Slice the kernels off one ear of corn. Raw is sexier, so just husk the silk off and slice the corn into the bowl of watermelon and cucumber. This makes the salsa.

Toss the watermelon salsa with the Mojito dressing and add a squeeze more of lime if you’d like. Add the shrimp and mingle all of the ingredients together in an orgy of colorful flavors.

Lovingly arrange the shrimp dish upon two plates and sit closely together. Enjoy with absolute abandon. Add a pinch of sea salt and pepper however it pleases. Take your time and savor each bite.

Love the Beastie: A Spin-and-Play Book

Be kind to your pets That’s the message of “Love the Beastie.” Gross, outrageous, but pure fun in a book, “Love the Beastie” is a pull and poke, spin and play, and cuddle and kiss Valentine for kids and especially kids with pets. Meet Paul and Judy. And meet their pet, Beastie. Paul and Judy used to be so mean to Beastie. They pulled Beastie’s hair, tickled Beastie’s feet. So, Beastie feastied Good thing Paul and Judy learned their lesson (stuck inside the belly of the Beastie).Written and illustrated by Henrik Drescher, “Love the Beastie “picks up where his irresistibly offbeat “Pat the Beastie” left off. Now Paul and Judy really are best friends with Beastie, and treat him with the love and respect he deserves. They go to the playground and spin on the carousel-don’t throw up Brush Beastie’s gunky teeth (“Gross “), and help Beastie play dress-up (“ha, look at Beastie’s funny clothes”). Then, at the end of a long day, they all cuddle together in bed. “Ahhh.”So what if Beastie’s kisses are scratchy or Beastie farts in his sleep. That doesn’t mean a thing when you love someone.

7 Promises to Prove I Love You

2015-05-01-1430441216-9087739-44066633_e0ab44de09_z.jpg

The day we met was the first time in my life that I thought I would have a heart attack. Your beauty was stunning, but your overall presence was too much for me to handle.

We were young, 17 and 18 years old, but I knew that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with you. I had never been the kind of person to believe in love at first sight, but I was head-over-heels in love. I knew I loved you before you ever said a word to me.

You hated me at first, but we got to know each other, and you started to feel the same way. Our wedding day was the happiest day of my life. I’m tearing up as I think about it.

I wish the story ended there, but getting married young had its challenges. We struggled with getting to know each other and communicating. We struggled with money and my weight issues.

We separated and almost went through a divorce. We called it off and found a way back to each other. As we celebrate 17 years of marriage, there are seven promises I need to make to you. These are my vows for the rest of the time we have on this earth together.

1. I promise to put you first

When we said, “I do,” there were vows I made to you. I promised to put you first, but the truth is I haven’t. I reaffirm my promise, but this time I will follow through. I will put your needs above my own. I will give you first place in my heart and life.

2. I promise to remember I’m the problem

A wise counselor told us that if you have a problem with your spouse, the problem is with yourself. I know this but have made it seem like you’re the problem. Instead of making a big deal about things that won’t matter in the grand scheme of things, I’ll work through my issues on my own. They aren’t major and aren’t important.

3. I promise never to cheat on you

I love you more than life itself, and will not allow myself to get to a place that puts me in a situation that leads to infidelity. You have my heart, mind, and body. I will prove my love to you by not sharing them with another. My lips and body are only designed to work with your lips and body; I will keep it that way.

4. I promise to communicate

In the past, I have tried to be “Superman” and keep what I’m dealing with in my business and life to myself. I promise to let you in and get your opinion. Your perspective gets first place, and I will make sure I honor it. I promise not to go to sleep if I haven’t communicated adequately.

5. I promise NEVER to get physical with you

You are precious and delicate, and the one thing I can’t live without. I promise never to get physical with you. I’m not talking about hitting, I promise to never even make a gesture towards you in anger. I promise to have a better way to deal with my temper.

6. I promise not to be jealous or controlling

In the past, I have struggled with being an insecure, controlling jerk. It’s been some time, but I want to reaffirm my commitment to never again fall victim to these tendencies. I will give you the space you need and trust you. You have given me no reason not to.

7. I promise to choose love every day

Over these last 16 years, we have learned first hand that love isn’t a feeling. It’s a decision. I promise to choose to love every day. I will ignore my feelings, which come and go. I will choose to wake up each day and honor the commitment I made.

I haven’t always been the ideal husband–I know that’s an understatement. Thank you so much for staying with me. I don’t deserve it but thank you for staying. I promise to honor what we’ve built together. I know words are cheap, so I’ll shut up and honor these commitments with action. No more talk, my love will be proven by honoring these seven promises.
