Miley Cyrus Models in Marc Jacobs Fall 2020 Runway Show

Miley Cyrus has made her New York Fashion Week fall 2020 debut.
The singer joined a host of other models for Marc Jacobs’ fall collection, which closed out New York Fashion Week. Cyrus modeled a black bra-like top with matching trousers and was holding a zebra-print coat.

This isn’t Cyrus and Jacobs’ first time working together. The singer teamed with Jacobs in 2013 for a charitable T-shirt which showed the slogan “Protect the Skin You’re In” inscribed on top of a nude Cyrus.  She later starred in the designer’s spring 2014 campaign photographed by David Sims. Last year, the duo teamed again to support Planned Parenthood, designing a pink hoodie that read “Don’t F—k With My Freedom.”
Cyrus also wore a look from Jacobs’ fall 2013 collection to the Met Gala that year, which celebrated its “Punk: Chaos to Couture” exhibit.

Marc Jacobs RTW Fall 2020

Marc Jacobs and I go way back. We started in the industry at about the same time, and in WWD’s then-idiosyncratic breakdown of which market editors covered which designers, I “got” Marc. Certainly, I have admired his work throughout his career and the ups and downs of his company and brand. Some may say too much.
But after Wednesday night’s New York Fashion Week finale, that was all beside the point, for will someone please tell me who in New York is a better designer, more creative, more provocative, more capable of delivering a thrill? And how many lists of “greatest designers in the world,” both current and over the past 30 years, would he not make? Jeez, the guy’s good.
Jacobs is an extraordinary designer, his talent part pure fashion acumen and part showmanship. Over the years, he has staged some incredibly engaging shows, the kind now called “experiential.” This one might take the cake: a band of 54 dancers under the brilliant direction of choreographer Karole Armitage comingling with 88 models in an extravaganza so exquisitely audacious and compelling and masterful that it’s a shame it was one night only. This was a museum-worthy performance-art piece — one that would sell

Collection. Items. Sounds like a fashion oxymoron. But no one in fashion is more adept at reconciling the oppositional than Marc Jacobs, whether opposition of perception (good taste, bad taste) or fact (unified collection, single items).
That’s just what he’s doing at The Marc Jacobs. With its launch year now in the rearview mirror, the line remains an assortment of wardrobe items to mix and match at will, its components derived either from the designer’s past work or from the trove of vintage that inspires him. Pieces are as disparate as The Forties Dress and rugged fare produced in concert with first-time collaborator, Crockett, Tex.-based workwear firm Stan Ray. Yet there’s no reason there can’t be a little structure imposed on the eclecticism. Here, Jacobs did that primarily via the palette, vibrant brights tempered into a gentler pastel range repeated through a series of photo-real prints, another of the lineups mini motifs. These include floral and cake motifs.
Yes, cakes. Guests arriving to the showroom came upon a huge, pretty confections display — clue! More than mere evil gastronomic temptation, it presaged a bakery motif that included photo prints of vintage cakes, some as single images on sweatshirts and some collaged into

Marc Jacobs Reenters Men’s Arena

Marc Jacobs is back in the men’s business, in part thanks to a popular guy named Charlie Brown. After several years of absence from the men’s arena, the brand has introduced its new range quietly, within the items-based The Marc Jacobs collection.
Collaborations are a key component of The Marc Jacobs, including one with “Peanuts.” When its launch lineup shipped for pre-fall 2019, the brand found men started buying larger sizes. That prompted Jacobs to add various pieces in men’s sizes, the first of which, for resort, are available at the brand’s stores and on its e-commerce site. “We have great pieces, exciting collaborations and had a big response with the launch of The Marc Jacobs from guys wanting the ‘Peanuts’ sweatshirts, the corduroys…so we thought why not pick some of the key pieces and offer them in men’s sizing,” Jacobs said.

The 17 resort items include The Tweed Jacket, The Carpenter Pant and The Ultimate Hoodie. As for collaboration pieces, in addition to the “Peanuts” sweatshirt, gym shorts and gym pants, there are a New York Magazine logo T-shirt and several pieces done with the artist Magda Archer.

Selena Gomez and 6-Year-Old Sister Gracie Wear Matching Marc Jacobs on the Red Carpet

Selena Gomez stole the show at the “Frozen II” premiere, thanks to a twinning moment with younger sister Gracie.
The singer attended the film premiere in Los Angeles on Thursday night wearing matching “Frozen”-inspired looks with six-year-old sister, Gracie Teefey. The sisters were both in a Marc Jacobs prairie dress and jeweled and feathered cape from the designer’s fall 2019 collection and in matching Pandora jewelry.
“Hope I’m officially the best big sissy ever now,” Gomez wrote on Instagram. “She was LIVING her best life!! ‘Frozen 2’ was amazing!!!”

Marc Jacobs to Sell Some of Personal Art Collection at Sotheby’s

IN WITH THE NEW: Oh to live like Marc Jacobs. Well now thanks to Sotheby’s, fans sort of can.
Some prized art that used to grace the walls of his West Village apartment will soon go under the gavel at various upcoming sales at Sotheby’s. Separately, an uber fan could spring for Jacobs’ four-story Bethune Street town house, which has an asking price of $ 14.5 million — down from the original asking price of $ 15.9 million.
Having recently purchased a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home in Rye, N.Y. with his husband Char Defrancesco, the designer has reason to refresh his environs. Jacobs told his friend and Sotheby’s chairman Amy Cappellazzo in an online interview, “I’m not Marie Kondo. I didn’t decide everything must go. I thought about my role as an art collector…and I just felt it’s time to give myself this window to start again.”
More than 150 pieces will be sold next month, including works by Ed Ruscha, John Currin, Urs Fischer, Richard Prince and Andy Warhol. There will also be work from Francis Picabia, François-Xavier Lalanne, Alberto and Diego Giacometti, Jean-Michel Frank, Eugène Printz, Jean Dunand, Paul Dupré-Lafon and Maurice Marinot, among others.

Marc Jacobs RTW Spring 2020

In his show notes and during a preview on Wednesday night, Marc Jacobs acknowledged the Sept. 11 anniversary. For anyone who worked in this industry 18 years ago in a show-related capacity, the two are inextricably linked. “Where were you when you heard the news?” The answer is at or en route to a show; working at a show; casting a show, doing something show. (I was traveling down Fifth Avenue to Bryant Park in a taxi and saw the Towers in flames in front of me.) Jacobs heard the news in a phone call from a reporter — myself. He’d slept in since the night before, he’d thrown a huge postshow party on Pier 54 with views of the Towers. In the moment, carefree reverie. In the aftermath — bacchanal before carnage — a stark reminder of how quickly life can change, and of how little control we have of our destinies.
Heavy material in the lead-up to a fashion show (or in a piece about a fashion show), but given the timing of Jacobs’ show and party 18 years ago, it would have been odd for him not to reminisce. He lost a friend in the attacks, David Rivers.

Why I Invited Marc Maron to Speak at Princeton University

Several months ago, I decided to invite the comedian Marc Maron, host of the popular podcast WTF and the star of the television show Maron, to speak at Princeton University. The popular stand-up comedian might not be the most predictable choice to deliver a lecture in our public event series. When I tweeted out that he will be speaking in McCosh 50, the same room where Albert Einstein delivered lectures about the Theory of Relativity, Maron himself seemed a little surprised, tweeting back: “Cool. No Pressure Man.” “Thanks for telling me that guy who’s running the lecture, oh man, not a lot of pressure,” he said on the October 5 podcast.

The truth is that, in my mind Maron, is a terrific and important figure who students and faculty should hear. The idea of inviting him to the university occurred to me before he announced that he was going to interview the president of the United States, a show that greatly bolstered his standing.

Besides the fact that stand-up comedy often provides some of the most insightful commentary about American culture, Maron is living proof of the great potential in modern communications technology. We have all heard the standard litany of complaints about what has resulted from the modern media world: the voices in broadcasting are increasingly shrill, quality control seems to have virtually disappeared along with tight production and editorial standards, and the hyper-fragmentation of broadcasting has made it difficult for any single voice to gain a sizable audience.

Yet since first airing in 2009, WTF has demonstrated that new technology has created important space for innovation.

Through his podcast, Maron has shown how the medium offers a type environment for conversation and discussion that was not always possible in the formal setting of traditional television and radio broadcasting. By literally conducting the interviews in his garage, Maron has convinced a huge number of guests — ranging from comedians like Robin Williams to public figures such as President Obama — to open up about their personal lives and their professional experiences in ways that have been absolutely riveting to listeners. The ease of contemporary technology helped him to create a “studio” space in which Maron nurtures a style of informal and intimate conversation that shatters the walls usually separating the listener from the show. As he told The New Yorker, “Guests sit within a history of me, artifacts from different times of my life.” Maron likens his interviews to the “ongoing conversations” that his grandfather (Grandpa Jack) had with the locals at a hardware store where he worked.

Without the large infrastructure of a network around him, podcasting also gives Maron the flexibility to move about and to interview a wide variety of guests, some of whom have proven to be extraordinarily interesting (such as a series of conversations with comedians about “borrowing” or stealing material from each other) that might otherwise not have found support in traditional broadcasting outlets. Indeed, he was able to follow his show with President Obama by interviewing comedians like Rich Vos.

Podcasts are also attracting younger listeners who are often turned off and tuned out to the traditional networks. Studies have shown that podcast audiences lean toward younger listeners, which creates an opportunity to provide quality shows to generations of Americans who are otherwise not listening. One can imagine how hosts interested in politics might take the Maron model to over political news in ways that attract disenchanted youth to this subject matter.

Part of the reason that they can do this is because podcasts embody the trend of narrowcasting that began back in the 1970s when the networks started to lose their monopoly. When shows can thrive within a certain niche and only have to appeal to certain audiences, they have the ability to refine their stylistic approach and substantive foci rather than feeling the need to do a little of everything but nothing with much depth.

Podcasts open up the constraints of time in a way that facilitates more open-ended and in-depth conversations. Podcasts can vary greatly in length. The host does not have to feel the pressure of finishing within a certain time frame imposed by commercials and radio or television airspace. The extra time, as well as the ability to go shorter, can liberate conversations to move in all sorts of directions when the host and producer don’t have to keep their eye on the clock.

So inviting Marc Maron was actually a no-brainer. Maron has done something truly spectacular with this new technological form. For those who constantly lament what each new innovation brings, they should download his app and listen to some of the exciting directions the media might take. Today, I’ll be enjoying what he has to say the old-fashioned way, sitting in my seat for his lecture right here at Princeton.

Marc Jacobs Switches to Ziegfeld Theatre for Spring Show

MARC’S FOLLIES: Liza premiered “Cabaret” there. Woody Allen chose it to open “Manhattan.” And now the historic Ziegfeld Theatre on West 54th Street will host Marc Jacobs’ spring show.
The designer has chosen the movie house — the last single-screen theater in Manhattan and the site of dozens of premieres and screenings from 1969 to the present — to show his spring collection. It will be the first time since 2004 Jacobs has shown outside of either the Park or the Lexington Avenue armories.
Though a spokesman for the brand was tight-lipped on details — “He’s incredibly protective about elements of the show,” the spokesman said, referring to Jacobs — this one looks to be something of a production. One clue might be in the hashtag for social media: #marcjacobspremiere.
In fact, to allow guests time to absorb all the elements of the setup, doors will open earlier than usual, at 5:15 p.m. and the show will begin at 6 p.m. on the dot.

Speak Up Chef: The Making of Marc Vetri

Introduced by his friend Mario Batali as a “hero to young people who stutter”, chef Marc Vetri took the stage. He was being honored by the Stuttering Association for the Young and he received his award almost sheepishly, as he smiled out to the packed auditorium. “With the stage lights on me I couldn’t see a single person in the audience. I hadn’t written a speech, but I knew I wanted to thank my parents, my wife and my speech therapist. I knew the story I wanted to tell.” After a couple seconds, he began his speech.

It was an eloquent and humble acceptance speech, one that earned him a standing ovation. More surprisingly perhaps, it was a speech given with the kind of voice we don’t often hear. A voice peppered with blocks of silence and repeated vowels. It was the voice of someone who stutters.

We know that Joe Biden and Jack Welch and Emily Blunt are ‘stutterers’. Many of us can rattle off a couple more names of famous people who stutter, or grew up stuttering. And yet, we rarely, if ever, hear the sound of their stuttered voices. They are held up as examples for young people, examples of what can be achieved if you grow out of your stutter, or learn to tame it. Examples of what is possible if you become largely fluent.

Marc Vetri is a different kind of hero. He is a man who has become a leader in his profession whilst stuttering.

“I was first drawn to the kitchen because I thought it was a place you didn’t have to talk.” He laughs at the memory as he tells me that these days he never stops talking. As well as a nightly prep talk to the 30 man team at his restaurant Vetri, he does radio interviews, appears on TV shows and gives speeches at industry events. “I know that people will listen to me, that they are interested in what I have to say. I don’t think about my speech too much these days.”

Still, he admits that it took a while to achieve that kind of acceptance. “There was a time when I was obsessed with my speech.” On the first food order he called in when he was working at Granita back in the early 90s, he remembers calling the vegetable guy back 10 times to complete the order because the answering machine kept cutting him off. The first time he had to work the expo station in the kitchen he sweated bullets calling out the orders.

And yet, he stuck it out. He kept speaking, kept working, kept desensitizing himself to the situations that scared him. As much as his stutter was a challenge, it also became a driving force in his career. “I believed that I had to work harder to compensate for my speech. I worked as if the guy next to me was working 24 hours to steal my job.”

Walking around Marc’s hometown of Philadelphia, it is clear that all that determination has paid off. Having first opened the critically acclaimed Vetri in 1998, Marc has since won a James Beard award for his cooking and he has opened 5 more restaurants around the city. Signed copies of his three cookbooks line the shelves of local bookstores and the culinary scene in the city gets ‘hotter’ every time one of his protégés opens a new restaurant.

If his stutter has shaped some of that outsize ambition, it is also the keeper of his humility. “I know the guys in my kitchens do impressions of me. One day I asked one of them to do it for me. He was all uncomfortable, kept telling me he’d never make fun of me. Eventually I persuaded him to do it. You know, he was good, too good.”

It is easy to assume that Marc can laugh at his stutter, because he knows how good he has it. He gets to do work he loves, expressing himself through food, and he has a young family that he seems to adore.

Many times we believe that we need to ‘fix ourselves’, that we need to iron out our imperfections before we can be what we want to be. Instead, Marc has reached the height of his profession while stuttering. He proves that you can refuse to let your challenges harness your dreams.

Cher Has Landed Marc Jacobs’ Latest Campaign

cher-marc-jacobs-ad-black-dress

Move over, Kendall JennerCher just landed Marc Jacobs’ latest campaign (Kendall starred in spring ’15 ads). The new ad has the music icon in a long black dress and matching gloves plucked straight from the runway, with the bold red background evoking the Diana Vreeland-inspired set design from Jacobs’ show.

The image is gorgeous and just the latest in a string that’s confirmed that women of a certain age are back in a big way. Brands like Saint Laurent, Céline, and Dolce & Gabbana have all used older faces in recent campaigns, and at the moment, there’s hardly anyone hotter on a red carpet than 77-year-old Jane Fonda.

The fashion world was a little surprised when Jacobs took the raven-haired beauty as his date to this year’s Met Gala, but this ad explains everything. Well played, Marc, well played.

9 Seriously Striking Things to See From the Marc Jacobs Fall 2015 Runway

The Marc Jacobs show is the unofficial end to New York Fashion Week and, guys, it’s here! From the string music that served as sound track to the grand scene portrayed on a backdrop, it all smacked of drama and a lady of the manor with some serious secrets (and that was even before I got a chance to check out the clothes!).

The setting was pretty rad, bathed in sinister-looking red light as guests arrived.

A photo posted by @demetriozolo on

Also there? MJ-branded waiters with vodka.

The painted set deserves a close-up because, seriously, this is impressive.

I didn’t spy a single model walk down the runway without gloves, with some rising all the way to the elbow and others simply skimming the wrist bone (most were black, but a few were done in snowy wine). Amal Clooney affect, perhaps?

A photo posted by Stella Bugbee (@stellabugbee) on

And sure, most of it was seriously lady-like, but there was also this one saucy sheer gown.

A video posted by Bag Snob (@bagsnob) on

The bags were lady-like, top-handle styles and, hurrah, included some leopard!

A photo posted by Erica Sullivan (@ericacsully) on

Sequins were all over, including some floor-length gowns and evening coats, but they were most captivating when done as accents on the bottom of pieces or hidden inside folds, flashing as the ladies moved down the catwalk.

A photo posted by @peligroinc on

Nicki Minaj doesn’t always smile when she poses on the red carpet but how thrilled does she look here, backstage and surrounded by fresh-off-the-runway models?

A photo posted by hannahfouts (@hannahfouts) on

Kendall Jenner was there too, though as a model and not a front row guest.

Have you checked out the show yet? Thoughts? Did anyone else get scared (in a good way) by the music?
