Better Call Saul: Michael McKean on Coming to Love Chuck

Full spoilers for Better Call Saul’s Season 2 finale, “Klick,” continue below.

There is at least one person who loves Chuck McGill beyond his brother Jimmy, and that is actor Michael McKean. Even as Chuck turns into a straight villain out to take down his corner-cutting, rule-breaking younger brother, McKean is going to be the first person to defend him.

McKean got on the phone to talk about the cliffhanger at the end of Better Call Saul’s Season 2 finale, how he relates to Chuck and how he portrays his character’s illness. He also (barely) teased what’s to come and whether any of these characters will get any peace.

Michael Fassbender Has Finally Played Assassin’s Creed

While Michael Fassbender is set to star as Callum Lynch in the upcoming Assassin’s Creed move, it wasn’t until recently that he finally played a game in the popular video game series it’s adapted from.

“I hadn’t played it before these guys approached me,” Fassbender admitted in an interview with EW, saying he’s since played one of the titles “mainly to get an idea of the physicality of the character.”

Fassbender went on to note that he’s well aware of the passion that Assassin’s Creed fans have for the franchise. As such, the studio is “striving to find something special” and deliver the historical accuracy and attention to detail that series veterans expect.

Artist Michael Kalish Introduces Men’s Lifestyle Brand Kalish & Sons

Artist Michael Kalish is joining the apparel industry. Kalish, who is best known for his large-scale work made from reclaimed objects, will launch a men’s wear lifestyle brand, Kalish & Sons, on Kickstarter today.
“The art world is an interesting place,” said Kalish. “It’s been very good to me but it’s been very limited. I wanted to create a new form of art with this collection.”
The project comes after five years of research that included Kalish traveling to meet with manufacturers across the country, which he is utilizing for his Made in the U.S. collection.
The line includes a classic chore coat, which retails for $ 225, that’s made from a breathable duck canvas and is lined with hand-screened original prints; a utilitarian duffel bag, which retails for $ 225, and limited-edition canvas prints screened on U.S. mail bags, which retail for $ 399. For the limited duration of the campaign, which ends on Nov. 1, backers can purchase these items at a reduced cost. A candle and a mug are also available.
“It’s a starter kit for men or pieces that can easily fit into your collection,” said Kalish, who added that the collection will grow and include more men’s wear staples and home items.

Michael Moore’s ‘Where To Invade Next’ Deserves The Nonpartisan Audience It Won’t Find

Michael Moore is the 21st century’s most famous documentarian, but not for the same reasons that Ken Burns and Werner Herzog and Errol Morris defined the genre in the previous century. Moore is hyper-aware of the platform he’s carved out for himself. It’s the same platform that got him booed at the Oscars and landed him on Time’s 2005 list of the globe’s most influential people. He galvanizes his core audience — liberals who criticize gun laws and long for universal healthcare — and alienates the non-choir folk who might actually have something to glean from his films.

That was blindingly transparent at Thursday’s opening-night Toronto Film Festival screening of Moore’s new documentary, “Where to Invade Next.” A packed house at the expansive Princess of Wales Theatre not only laughed at the movie’s many witty moments, but gleeful cheers and applause broke out at regular intervals as the film’s interview subjects pointed out the copious examples that prove America, however great, is culturally, politically and sociologically inferior t0 other countries. Sitting among the crowd, and agreeing with the bulk of their endorsements, I wondered whether what should be seen as a relatively nonpartisan doc would register anywhere outside of the admitted echo chamber that exists within the mainstream entertainment media. Will anyone who doesn’t already question America’s military industrial complex see this film? Aren’t proponents of women’s rights already aligned with the points Moore raises? Doesn’t anyone with half a brain think the country’s lack of paid-vacation laws is chintzy?

The answers to these questions, in all likelihood, are resounding affirmatives. That’s not to say that “Where to Invade Next” isn’t good. Its execution, in fact, is quite effective. It’s built on the guise of Moore assuming the Pentagon’s duties by “invading” — aka visiting — other countries to poach ideas that would make America a fairer, more hospitable place. Along the way, he learns that Italy provides citizens with eight weeks (!!!) of paid vacation. In France, school-cafeteria lunches are five-star affairs. Slovenia offers free college education. Portugal has decriminalized all drug use and seen its usage rates plummet. Women’s health clinics in Tunisia are government-funded.

Wouldn’t it be great if America emulated such policies? “Obviously,” the TIFF viewers shouted by way of periodic applause in response to the film’s talking heads, who blanch at the notion that the United States doesn’t offer the same advantages. The fact that “Where to Invade Next” is built with practical alternatives to America’s systemic flaws makes it a stirring work of political theater, and with only a gentle presence from Moore throughout, progressive audiences will continue to howl, just as they did at Thursday’s screening. But watching the movie with such a devout congregation was a living reminder that a Moore documentary serves constituents rather than the overall populace. With peachier projects like “Bowling for Columbine” and “Fahrenheit 9/11,” that was inevitable. With “Where to Invade Next,” which ends on a hopeful note and should be seen as Moore’s least parochial outing yet (there’s only one George W. Bush crack!), it’s just a shame. This isn’t a quote-unquote liberal movie — it’s a look at the decency that exists across the globe but is often undervalued on our home turf.

Michael Jordan’s Tune Squad Uniform From ‘Space Jam’ Is Hitting The Auction Block

Michael Jordan’s most important uniform — you know, the one he wore while saving the earth — is hitting the auction block this fall.

Starting on Oct. 1, fans of Jordan and the 1996 sports entertainment classic “Space Jam” can bid on the actual Tune Squad uniform Jordan wore during the making of the movie. Despite there being “signs of wear” and “minor staining” on the uniform, it’ll be available for bidding through online auction house Invaluable via Los Angeles-based auction house Profiles In History.

Invaluable estimates the price to fall between $ 10,000 (the starting bid) and $ 15,000, but in the past, Jordan memorabilia has been auctioned off for upwards of $ 100,000

Think you can afford it?

Michael Eisner Apparently Can’t Find Any Beautiful, Funny Women, But We Just Did

Last week at the Aspen Ideas Festival, former Disney CEO and clueless white man Michael Eisner reminded us that women aren’t usually funny because they’re too busy doing their makeup. Eisner was on stage interviewing actress Goldie Hawn about her experience as a woman in entertainment, The Atlantic reported. When Hawn mentioned that she didn’t grow up thinking she was pretty — but obviously got there, eventually — Eisner offered his own horrible theory behind our supposed dearth of picture-perfect comediennes.

“I know women who have been told they’re beautiful, they win Miss Arkansas, they don’t ever have to get attention other than with their looks,” Eisner stated. “So they don’t tell a joke. In the history of the motion-picture business, the number of beautiful, really beautiful women — a Lucille Ball — that are funny, is impossible to find.”

You know what’s also impossible to find? A smoking hot male comic who isn’t Chris Pratt. But we’re not complaining, because there’s nothing less relevant to comedy than how any one comic — male or female — looks. Mr. Eisner may be the only one who really cares.

If you’re out there, guy, we’d like to introduce you to just 32 of all the hilarious female comedians out there, and let you know we don’t give a sh-t whether they’re “really beautiful” or not.

Amy Schumer

Her Comedy Central show is killing it, and her new feature film “Trainwreck” has already garnered some rave reviews. It premieres July 17.

Mindy Kaling

“The Mindy Project” may be moving off cable, but the author of “Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?” has a new book of personal essays due out Sept. 15

Kristen Wiig

We can’t wait for Paul Feig’s lady-centric “Ghostbusters” to hit theaters on July 22, 2016, but until then, you can catch Wiig on Netflix’s “Wet Hot American Summer,” premiering July 31.

Amy Poehler

There are too many reasons to love Amy, not least of all being her voice work as Joy in Pixar’s new “Inside Out.” (She’ll also appear on the upcoming ”Wet Hot American Summer” reboot on Netflix!)

Melissa McCarthy

We adored her as the lovable chef extraordinaire Sookie St. James in “Gilmore Girls,” and still today as the unlikely (yet badass) heroine in “Spy.”

Tina Fey

If you haven’t yet watched “30 Rock,” it’s on Netflix for your binging pleasure.

Jessica Williams

She’s not taking over “The Daily Show” because she’s perfectly comfortable being one of our favorite-ever correspondents, thank you very much.

Ellie Kemper

“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” (created by Tina Fey) was one of the best things on Netflix in 2015. But of course, you may simply know Kemper as the innocent Erin Hannon on “The Office.”

Tracee Ellis Ross

Ross — starring as Bea on “Black-ish” — had some revealing things to say about women in entertainment in May’s round table discussion with The Hollywood Reporter.

Kate McKinnon

Get ready to see more of McKinnon’s Hillary Clinton spoofs on “Saturday Night Live” as the 2016 election season heats up. Oh, she’s also in that all-female “Ghostbusters” movie.

Gina Rodriguez

The actress stars in “Jane the Virgin,” one of TV’s breakout comedy hits, which centers around a virgin who was artificially impregnated by mistake.

Chelsea Peretti

Oh, you don’t watch “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”? No bother, catch Peretti’s stand-up feature, “One of the Greats,” on Netflix.

Retta

Follow Retta on Twitter if you like both television and lols.

Kristen Schaal

Schaal has some thoughts on Dadbods, but you might know her best as the Senior Women’s Correspondent of “The Daily Show.”

Jenny Slate

The voice of “Marcel the Shell” is also hilarious as the hopelessly self-absorbed Mona-Lisa in “Parks And Recreation.” And every weirdo she played on “The Kroll Show.”

Ilana Glazer

This list would be an utter failure without mentioning “Broad City” …

Abbi Jacobson

Which follows Ilana and Abbi on their pot-laced misadventures through New York City. It’s beautiful.

Elizabeth Banks

Banks has honed her comedy chops with supporting roles in a slew of TV shows and movies from “30 Rock” to “The Hunger Games” to “Pitch Perfect.”

Cecily Strong

She’s been on SNL since 2012, and did a fantastic job hosting the 2015 White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

Miranda Hart

Her self-titled BBC sitcom is amazing, but so is her performance as McCarthy’s equally-unlikely sidekick in “Spy.”

Vanessa Bayer

Another SNL cast member, we’re enjoying seeing Bayer in more silver screen roles — most recently alongside Schumer in “Trainwreck.”

Julia Louis-Dreyfus

“Veep” is one of our favorites, but anyone without an HBO Go password can still catch her on “Seinfeld” reruns. (Now also on Hulu! Huzzah!)

Megan Mullally

Since “Will & Grace,” we’ve particularly enjoyed Mullally as the utterly batsh-t Tammy Two in “Parks and Recreation.”

Anna Kendrick

Equally talented at drama as she is in comedic roles, Kendrick is another lady you want to follow on Twitter

Carrie Brownstein

This “Portlandia” star is the reason we ask to see all our organic free-range chicken’s papers. She’s also got a book coming out.

Aparna Nancherla

We can only say that we hope to see a LOT more of Nancherla’s absurdist humor in the future. For now, we have these video clips on the Internet.

Iliza Shlesinger

The food-loving winner of 2008’s “Last Comic Standing” has a comedy special, “Freezing Hot,” up on Netflix.

Tig Notaro

Known for a legendary 2012 set on her breast cancer diagnosis, Notaro runs a podcast, appears on “This American Life,” played Barb on “Transparent” and premiered a self-titled documentary at Sundance.

Kate Berlant

Berlant’s style has been dubbed “experimental” yet “magnetic” by The New York Times. Hear her make it weird with Pete Holmes on his podcast.

Nicole Byer

Here’s an Upright Citizens Brigade alum you can spot on MTV’s “Girl Code.” She’s also appeared in a Nestle commercial that only runs in Israel.

Michelle Wolf

This Brooklyn girl made her first “Late Night with Seth Meyers” appearance last summer.

Megan Neuringer

Here’s another longtime UCB performer we hope to see a lot more of on the Internet.

Did we leave your favorite off this far-from-exhaustive list? Let us know in the comments.

Michael B. Jordan Responds To Trolls Saying A Black Man Can’t Play Johnny Storm

Michael B. Jordan is responding to Internet trolls saying a black man can’t play Johnny Storm in the upcoming “Fantastic Four” film.

After online commenters expressed their displeasure over the fact that the actor is playing a character who was blond and blue-eyed in the comic, the “Friday Night Lights” and “Fruitvale Station” star penned an essay in Entertainment Weekly addressing the topic:

Sometimes you have to be the person who stands up and says, “I’ll be the one to shoulder all this hate. I’ll take the brunt for the next couple of generations.” I put that responsibility on myself. People are always going to see each other in terms of race, but maybe in the future we won’t talk about it as much. Maybe, if I set an example, Hollywood will start considering more people of color in other prominent roles, and maybe we can reach the people who are stuck in the mindset that “it has to be true to the comic book.” Or maybe we have to reach past them.

To the trolls on the Internet, I want to say: Get your head out of the computer. Go outside and walk around. Look at the people walking next to you. Look at your friends’ friends and who they’re interacting with. And just understand this is the world we live in. It’s okay to like it.

After the essay was published, Jordan took to Twitter to thank fans expressing their support:

“Fantastic Four” hits theaters Aug. 7. Head over to Entertainment Weekly to read Jordan’s insightful piece in full.

After Postmodernism: Michael Pearce Writes About ‘Art in the Age of Emergence’

Postmodernity is being supplanted by a new emergent age, characterized by the internet’s ability to bring together communities and give them the tools to organize themselves and express the truth as they see it.

– Michael Pearce

2015-05-09-1431192991-1516867-Michael_Pearce_Painting.jpg

Michael Pearce: photo by Harold Muliadi

After hearing a 2013 talk by theologian Philip Clayton–The New Sciences of Emergent Complexity: Evolving Religion in an Evolving World–artist Michael Pearce found himself tremendously excited. Emergence, a cross-disciplinary theory which deals with the way that higher-order complexity can arise out of chaos, presented a powerful new model for aesthetics. For Pearce, a figurative artist and one of the founders of The Representational Art Conference, emergence opened a dynamic alternative to what he feels have been the reductive and culturally erosive tendencies of Postmodernism in art:

Complexity and emergence offer an explanation for the positive experience of the art object, and fills the gap critiqued by Adorno as the great failing of aesthetic writing – that there is no metanarrative in a world in which idealism has been crushed.

2015-05-09-1431193108-6774055-Pearce_Book.jpg

Art in the Age of Emergence

Hardcover: 195 pages

Published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing (January 1, 2015)

Serious discussions about emergence have been appearing in other fields since the postwar era, especially in physics, chemistry and biology. For example, in biology, emergence has been used to explain properties of life forms that go beyond explanation and transcend their component parts. In the words of one postwar biologist: “Life itself is an emergent property.”

More recently, In the field of theology, Philip Clayton has taken an interdisciplinary approach to emergence, and posited that emergence suggests a new approach to the problem of consciousness, which is neither reducible to brain states nor proof of a mental substance or soul. In his book, Mind and Emergence: From Quantum to Consciousness, he advocates emergentist panentheism and a Christian constructive theology consistent with the new sciences of emergence.

Michael Pearce’s book is first major effort to use emergence as a model for aesthetic theory. Like Clayton, Pearce takes an interdisciplinary approach, weaving together quotes and observations by archaeologists, art historians, evolutionary biologists, philosophers, physicists, semioticians, and theologians. Partly a personal meditation, but also an exploration of scientific and philosophical ideas, Art in the Age of Emergence is intended to challenge the current orthodoxies of contemporary aesthetics.

In the book’s first chapter, for example, Pearce argues for a new “authenticity” in works of art, which he feels is an antidote to the capitalist excesses of the contemporary art market. Pearce writes:

The desire for authenticity is antithetical to the money dominated postmodern art world, in which those who purchase art are manipulated by cynical artists and dealers who exploit socialist pretensions but luxuriate in the benefits of a rampant, unregulated free market capitalism.

Pearce’s idealism will strike many readers as being gloriously out of touch: something which he would likely take as a compliment. As well-stocked as his book may be with elegant theories and interdisciplinary overlaps, Pearce is nearly alone among serious art writers in his taste and orientation. One of the book’s insistences–that representational art is a favored manifestation of emergence–seemed worth questioning. I asked Pearce: “Why do you feel that Emergence works so well in relation to representational art? Wouldn’t it work for abstraction too?”

Yes, it does. Emergent aesthetics support both abstraction and representation. But abstraction is only a part of the whole, not a theme that is superior to representation. To think that abstraction is superior to it is an idea that comes straight out of Kant, who thought that we could somehow detach ourselves from emotional responses to art and view it with “disinterested interest”, with an analytical approach that distanced the work from the viewer.

It’s an idea that was promoted in the early twentieth century by modernists like Herman Broch and Walter Gropius, who were attempting to reinvent culture as a response to the horrors of the world wars. But the idea that we could detach ourselves from emotion dehumanizes us as badly as ever. Broch even said that beauty was evil! He wrote a lengthy essay about it, describing how kitsch led to it. He wanted to dispose of anything kitsch, and to get rid of sentiment.

But sentiment is a thoroughly human quality – what could be more kitsch than the mother holding a newborn baby? And how could anyone regard a moment like that without feeling the kitsch sentiment it inspires? To pretend that human beings can be detached from emotional responses like this is ridiculous.

Again, I’m not saying that abstraction is bad and wrong – but that it’s only a part of the art we make as a response to human experience. We’ve tried to separate emotion from art for a century, but disinterested interest is a completely artificial imposition upon the way mind works. The emergent mind is founded upon sensory experience. If art reflects mind, then why would we attempt to deny the value and importance of sentiment in our art?

Art in the Age of Emergence is a dense book that is ultimately quite optimistic, and a genuine conversation-starter. In its postscript, Pearce states that “We are moving beyond the negative impact upon human consciousness caused by the first half of the twentieth century…We all know what an emergent experiences feels like: it is a moment of harmony, of wonder, of completion, felt both as a deep affirmative feeling of unity and as a physiological experience that takes place in the brain.”

For Pearce’s ideas to be validated his friends and admirers are going to have to make works of art that live up to his very high expectations. For the time being, Pearce is perhaps the only serious art writer in America who offers toasts to Bouguereau and looks to theology for ideas about aesthetics. He is already at work on another book which will deal with emergence and kitsch. For now, his ideas and enthusiasms mark Pearce as decidedly contrarian. Or course, in the art world taste can shift very suddenly and unpredictably. If things move in the direction Pearce feels they will, he will likely see it as a manifestation of emergence, something he noticed before everyone else caught on.

Michael Jai White Writes Letter Of Apology To His Ex-Girlfriends: ‘I Believed All Women Were Crazy’

Following years of trial and error with romantic relationships, it appears actor Michael Jai White has stumbled upon an epiphany when it comes to dating, love and his former girlfriends.

Earlier this week the “For Better Or Worse” star took to his Facebook page to pen an open letter aptly titled, “Apologies To All My Ex’s.” In the letter, White detailed some of his previous dating issues and thoughts on how women were “crazy” with their relationship demands.

“As a man, you have to deal with hand holding, ‘yes dearing,’ and freaking cuddling! I endured this for years until my relationships reached their natural demise due to some natural chemistry flaw between us or the woman’s natural chemical imbalance- Yes I said it,” he wrote.

“I believed all women were crazy and the only choice a man had was to decide exactly how much crazy he’s willing to deal with to sustain a relationship. It’s crazy to think I, as a man, would ever want to spend every waking moment with a woman, to be all-up-on each other constantly, to talk endlessly about ‘every-damned-thing’ and see each other “every-damned-day!”

Now happily married, White credits his undying love for wife, Gillian Waters, who, he says, has helped him gain a better understanding on how to cater to a woman’s needs like “a man.”

“I simply didn’t love my ex’s in the capacity their spirits knew organically needed to be loved,” he said. “I believe woman nowadays have learned to settle for what’s familiar to love. In turn, they’ve had to decide how much of a man’s love they can live without to sustain a relationship.”

“I can say that I am now the very best version of myself and that’s due entirely to my relationship.”

APOLOGIES TO ALL MY EX’S! In all my years as a grown man I knew, without a doubt, that women were different than men…

John Oliver & Michael Bolton Serenade The IRS, ‘The Anus Of Our Country’

Why does everyone hate the IRS? On HBO’s “Last Week Tonight,” host John Oliver said it’s because the agency combines two of the things we hate most: “someone taking our money and math.”

However, Oliver argued that our anger is misdirected because the IRS “does a difficult, thankless, almost dangerously boring job,” and GOP cuts to the agency’s budget is making their task even more difficult.

So if you’ve got a problem with how much you pay in taxes, don’t blame the IRS. Blame Congress.

“The fact is, blaming the IRS because you hate paying your taxes is a bit like slapping your checkout clerk because the price of eggs has gone up,” Oliver said. “It’s not her fault — she’s just trying to help you get out of the store.”

Oliver said it’s time to change the way we think about the IRS, even if no one likes the agency.

“Not everything that’s important is likable,” Oliver said. “Think of our government as a body. The IRS is the anus: It’s nobody’s favorite part, but you need that thing working properly or everything goes to shit real quick.”

To help win a little sympathy for the beleaguered agency, Oliver brought in Michael Bolton to sing “if not a love song, a song of reluctant support for their appropriate funding.”

Check out the clip above to see what is perhaps the only time you’ll ever hear Bolton croon an ode that includes the word “anus.”

Donny Osmond Remembers His Last Conversation With Michael Jackson

In a HuffPost Live interview Wednesday, Donny Osmond looked back on his longtime friendship with the undisputed King of Pop, Michael Jackson.

“Back in the early ’70s it was the Jacksons and the Osmonds. It was Michael and Donny. We were kind of, like, parallel,” the 57-year-old singer told host Nancy Redd.

The two came from large families, both born as the seventh children in families of nine. Their mothers’ even share the same birthday, he added.

Osmond recounted one of the many conversations the two had before Jackson’s death in 2009. Their last chat, about a year before Jackson’s death, may have been the most indicative of how the lives of both stars had changed so dramatically throughout the years.

“He said, ‘Please don’t tell anybody, but I rented one of those big custom buses, those touring buses, and I took my kids. We’re hiding in Phoenix right now.’ Hiding from the press because everything had hit the fan,” Osmond said.

Osmond was quick to offer a few words of advice to Jackson.

“And I said, ‘Why don’t you do me a favor, Mike. You’re a nine-hour drive from my home in Utah. Bring your kids. No one will know you’re here. They’ll swim in the swimming pool. Have a little normalcy in your life’,” he said.

But the trip to Utah never panned out.

“And he said, ‘You know what Donny, I think I’m going to do that.’ And he never did,” Osmond said.

Why Michael Sam Says He Needed Sports to Survive | Oprah Prime | Oprah Winfrey Network

Michael Sam, the first openly gay player drafted into the National Football League, grew up a self-proclaimed “mama’s boy” in the small town of Hitchcock, Texas. Michael found an outlet in sports, an activity his mother, a Jehovah’s Witness, didn’t approve of because she believed it conflicted with the religion. “Becoming a teenager, I needed sports,” he says. “I knew I wanted to make something of myself. I knew sports taught me, and my coaches taught me, the discipline that I have today. I needed it.”

INTERVIEW: John Lloyd Young, Erich Bergen, and Michael Lomenda on Jersey Boys

For his new film Jersey Boys, legendary director Clint Eastwood translates the blockbuster jukebox musical about the rise and fall (and rise) of singer Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons from the stage (where it’s been a global phenomenon since its debut in 2006) to the big screen. When it came time to fill out the cast of his celluloid songsters, Eastwood didn’t wander too far from the project’s stage roots, selecting veteran players from the many lives of Jersey Boys for three of the leads: Tony-winning John Lloyd Young, who originated the role on Broadway, as Valli, and actors Erich Bergen and Michael Lomenda as singer/writer Bob Gaudio and bassist Nick Massi, respectively. (Boardwalk Empire‘s Vincent Piazza plays group founder Tommy DeVito).

I had the chance to talk with Young, Bergen, and Lomenda during their swing through the San Francisco Bay Area promoting the film, and one thing that became amply clear with all of them was how surreal it was to be in the middle of a whirlwind that’s seen them rocket from relative obscurity to headlining a movie directed by Clint Eastwood. In addition to reminiscing about previous visits to the city, I talked to them about the play’s long journey from conception to completion, what it was like to perform a play when you know Clint Eastwood is in the audience watching, and the experience of making the movie after doing it for so long on stage. Read on for the transcript of our conversation:

So, how are you guys doing? How is the tour going?

Erich Bergen: Good. This is it, this is the last stop, today.

I was thinking as I was parking, you guys are living what your characters were living in the film.

Bergen: Better hotel accommodations.

John Lloyd Young: Except, Warner Bros. is paying for our rooms. We’re not paying off a million dollars of debt to the mob.

Bergin: Yes, and we are sort of going out and telling this story now, and living that a little bit. And Michael and I were actually on tour with Jersey Boys, the stage version. I opened the tour here and he closed the tour here in San Fran. So, we’ve all lived versions of the art that we’re imitating in various ways.

So, you guys all did the stage tour. You did not do it at the same time.

Michael Lomenda: No. We knew of each other. My first introduction to Jersey Boys was seeing John Lloyd on the Tonys, winning his Tony Award, and seeing their performance on the Tonys.

Young: I never did the tour. I did the Broadway version.

And the last time you did it was five years ago, I believe?

Young: I did the first two years, and then after several years away, I was asked back to do it, and so I did for a few months at the end of 2012, beginning of 2013, and that’s when Clint came and saw it. And I just did it again in London after we wrapped the movie. They asked me to do six weeks in London.

When you were doing it the first time, did it even enter onto your radar that you would be starring in the film version?

Young: I say yes, not out of any sort of retroactive presumptuousness or arrogance or anything. I say yes only because when the show was becoming a big hit on Broadway, Hollywood started to really try to compete for the rights to it. So much to an extent that I was a neophyte actor making his Broadway debut, and I was at the opening of a Hollywood film in New York, and one of the major studio heads came up to me at a party and cornered me and said, “You have to convince [one of our writers] Marshall Brickman to give us the film rights.” So, yes, right in the beginning, I thought, “Wow, they are all over this movie, and this cast, we could end up in it.” But, that didn’t happen.

It grew into this international hit over several years. No one really got the movie that early on. Something happened, I think probably Bob Gaudio and Frankie Valli, who are now executive producers, were holding out for some more involvement or something. So, it was several years later that, finally, in 2010, that Graham King, who was our originating producer, won the rights in a bidding war, and then it started to ramp up to the point that, by the time I was back on Broadway and Clint was attached, he was able to see me. So, Michael, who was on tour, and Eric Bergen just has a reputation for being the best Bob Gaudio – according to the real Bob Gaudio. So, when Clint was casting, Clint told me this on set that he asked Bob Gaudio, “Who is the most like you?” and Bob said, “Erich Bergen.”

Wow, that’s high praise.

Bergen: Yeah, it is. It’s also one of those things where, I mean, thank God he said that, because I wasn’t seen by Clint and the producers. I was no longer in the show, and if you ask any actor, “Did you ever think…blah blah blah,” and they can sit back and say, “Well, you know, I always felt…” But, I think, as actors, we all go through that back-and-forth of yes and no every day, right? We sit there and we go after a job that we want.

When they started auditioning for this movie, I said to my agents, “How do we just make sure that I’m really seen, and how do we campaign for this, and how do we do it?” But, if I hadn’t got the job, if it had gone to someone else, they’d be saying the same thing, and I would be sitting back, going, “Well, I’m very happy with my next thing.” So, you sort of make light of whatever happens to you.

Young: But, aren’t you glad we don’t have to see someone else play these roles that we love so much? Someone else do them? I’m so relieved.

Bergen: Correct. By the way, I saw great actors play my role who would have been wonderful. I was picked to do it, but I don’t know. I just know that, yes, I wanted it, yes, I thought I really have a shot at this, yes, I think I was the best person for the role, but did I ever think it would actually happen? Like, really actually happen? I don’t know. I don’t know. I want to say, “Yeah, I always felt.” But, I don’t know.

Young: Even having won a Tony Award for the original production, and being on the cast album of the original production, presuming that you would get the role, period, feels almost just like you’ll jinx yourself. I even thought, “Who am I to decide who the studio is going to choose?” I just hoped that whoever they choose is not really bad, so that I don’t have to spend the rest of my life looking at this legacy that I started with an original cast, and say, “God, if only they had let me play it, I could have shown them this or this or this, and instead, they made a mistake.” So, I’m happy that I don’t have to know what that feels like.

Bergen: Not to be in the position of Carol Channing when they remade Hello, Dolly! into a film with Barbra Streisand…

Young: Or how about the most famous one ever, Julie Andrews with My Fair Lady.

Bergen: Right. And you know what Carol says about Hello Dolly! “What do you think about the movie of Hello, Dolly!” and she goes “Is there a movie? I didn’t know there was a movie.” So, I’m glad we don’t have to…

You don’t have to get that line out there.

Bergen: No, not so much.

Young: She ended up doing fine for herself, because she got an Oscar nomination for Thoroughly Modern Millie, and Julie Andrews then won an Oscar for Sound of Music. It ended alright for them.

Bergen: And there are people who didn’t get these parts that go to the next thing. It’s one of those things where, at the end of the day, it is a job, and it’s a career-making job, and we love it, but we’re all ready to do whatever comes next.

Young: You know what’s even more rare? An actor of the thousands, the tens of thousands of actors who are professional actors who hold union cards, so they’re professional actors. Of the tens of thousands of actors that are out there, there are only a few dozen of us who get to say that we played lead roles for Clint Eastwood and it doesn’t even really matter that it was Jersey Boys. That’s its own thing.

That was actually my next question, and it really is for all three of you, but John and Michael, you knew Clint Eastwood was in the audience, watching you. What was the immediate emotion that you feel at that moment?

Lomenda: I refused to believe that that was actually happening. It wasn’t until I saw a picture that one of our swing sent that he had taken in the lobby with Mr. Eastwood, that I sort of had to realize it was true. Frankly, the movie was really off my radar. I thought it had already been cast. I thought that he was just there brushing up before he started shooting, and so I met him backstage, obviously, thrilled to meet a legendary icon.

But, I shook hands and I didn’t expect to get a call a couple of weeks later to audition. I’m Canadian, with limited-to-no film or TV experience, and so honestly, this is literally just the most crazy thing that’s ever happened to me in my entire life. And then, to then get that call saying that I was going to be working with Mr. Eastwood, it was just mindblowing in every way. And, to be honest with you, ever since that call, every single experience with this whole movie has been that way for me. It’s just far beyond anything I could have fathomed. So, I’m just grateful for it all.

Young: When Clint got attached, well, through the years, after originating the Broadway production and winning the awards and watching it, over the years, become a hit all across the English-speaking world, hearing of the movie here and there over the years, my emotions would go up and down, because no matter what, first of all, it’s a privilege for any actor to become well-associated with a role, or to be starring in a hit show or whatever. When, before, you were just a struggling actor like everybody else, right? Suddenly, you’re well-known.

Then, you start to realize you have a legacy in something and it starts to grow all over the world, and it’s a strange feeling to see it come together and change in ways, and then to know that you have no control over what happens with the movie and yet, in my case, I wanted to make my legacy permanent somehow and do the role, if I could, but I had to spend a lot of years as the movie was coming up, and then it was going down. It was, “Are people going to make it?” Then, it wasn’t going to be made.

After awhile, I became used to the idea that I have no control, and I know that it’s gonna be awkward to have to see someone else come, to give the baton to someone else and watch them play this role for posterity. But, I came to a point where I accepted that possibility and I was very calm about it. It took awhile, but I got there. By the time that Clint was attached, I got to that point where I just felt the equanimity. So, when I found out Clint was in the audience, I knew, “Well, this is what’s going to either get me the part or not. I have no control over it.”

I know I’m good in this role on stage. I’ve seen audiences react to my performance on-stage, by that point, for about 1,200 times, and I’m just really joyful. I felt just joyful that this guy, who’s got dominion in Hollywood and clearly is a leader in his territory, was seeing me in the one thing in my life, so far, where I knew was in my territory, playing Frankie Valli on stage, on Broadway, and I felt, this is great. Whatever happens will happen, but how wonderful to show Clint Eastwood how at-home I am in this role, today, for this two-hour performance.

And, Erich, what’s your Clint Eastwood story?

Bergen: Who? (laughs) Every time you say it, it’s always like, “Why are you asking me? Oh right.” It’s still a lot to get used to. I think what I will always take from working with Clint was that he let us be us. I didn’t know what to think. I never thought I would be in a Clint Eastwood movie. I always loved Clint Eastwood films.

That’s not something most people think.

Bergen: No! I also wasn’t one of those actors, like, I remember when I was in college for acting, every guy wanted to be Marlon Brando and every guy wanted to do these gritty, masculine things. I was like, that is just not my speed. I just came from a different world. So, as much as I loved Clint Eastwood films, it wasn’t on my bucket list. So, I knew nothing. I truly knew nothing about going to work with him, other than his finished products.

Working with him, I was so thrilled to find out, first of all, how much fun he is, but what I will always take away is the confidence he instilled in me. Because, I walked on that set with the mindset of, “How do I please the director?” What he gave back to us was, “You don’t have to worry about pleasing me. We’re all making a movie here together.” And, the reason why he hired us, specifically the three of us but even including Vincent [Piazza], was what we did either in the audition room or what he saw us do on stage.

That’s why we got the job. So, for us to all of a sudden do something different now made no sense, and to instill in us the confidence to just continue doing what we had always done, that’s something that I never had any director give me before. I’m so used to being micromanaged.

Young: “You’re good enough. That’s the thing. You’re not only good enough, but you’re the best one, and I chose you.” Being chosen by Clint Eastwood, when he can have any actor he wants in the world in his films and he chose unknowns, ’cause he liked our performances, how can you not rise to the occasion?

Bergen: Yeah, that’s definitely what I will take away. I was talking to Mike Doyle, who plays Bob Crewe in this film, and Mike’s one of these guys that you might not know his name but he’s been in everything. He’s that guy from everything. One day, on set, we were sitting in the back of one of those golf carts on set, and I said to him, “Alright, what is your greatest experience, of all the things you’ve ever done? What was your best film or show or whatever?” and he said, “This.”

I said, “You can’t be serious. Really? After all of everything? This, what we’re doing right now, is your greatest?” And, he said, because I forget who of us, there were a couple of us in the car, and he said, “You guys don’t know what you’re doing. You have no clue how important this is. You have no clue how good this is. You are spoiled rotten with this, and it is all downhill from here.”

Hopefully not! (Laughs)

Bergen: (Laughs) No, he didn’t mean that literally, but in the sense that…

It’s a pretty good entrée into everything.

Bergen: If this guy, who has been in everything, is telling me that, just from his experience on this film, that this is the best, most fun experience he’s ever had, then I don’t know if we’ll ever be able to fully take in what we’ve done until maybe years from now.

Lloyd: I have friends from the South that have an expression that I think is very charming: “We fell into the honey pot.”

Michael Emerson Sings ‘Happy’ On The ‘Arsenio Hall Show’

What does “Lost” and “Person of Interest” star Michael Emerson think of his image after playing two of TV’s most intense characters?

“It troubles me because I’m not that sinister intense person,” Emerson told Arsenio Hall, with mock outrage. “I’m really a positive, optimistic and fun-loving guy.”

And to prove just how positive, optimistic and fun-loving he really is, Emerson did his own version of the hit song “Happy,” bringing some Ben Linus creepiness to what was once the happiest tune on the radio.

Watch the video above, and you might never hear the happiness in “Happy” again.

Michael Bay Falls Apart, Shocks Crowd At CES (VIDEO)

LAS VEGAS — Michael Bay certainly knows how to wow a crowd.

The Hollywood director and producer abruptly walked off stage during a Samsung press conference here on Monday, surprising a large crowd and temporarily disrupting what was supposed to be a highly choreographed, well-scripted presentation to show off the South Korean tech giant’s latest lineup of consumer electronics.

Bay was on stage to help Samsung promote the company’s huge, new curved UHD (ultra high definition) televisions. The press conference was part of CES, the annual gathering of electronics companies in Las Vegas.

Samsung’s Joe Stinziano asked Bay, who has directed and produced blockbusters like “Armageddon” and the “Transformers” series, what inspires him and how he comes up with his “unbelievable ideas.”

See video above.

Bay started to answer, but then he trailed off, turned in a circle and appeared to blame the teleprompter, saying, “The type is all off. Sorry. But I’ll just wing this.”

“Tell us what you think,” Stinziano said, going along with it.

“Yeah, we’ll wing it right now,” Bay said, shaking his head.

“I try to take people on an emotional ride and, um …” he trailed off again.

Stinziano attempted to get Bay back on track by asking him how the new TV’s curved screen will impact viewers’ experience of his movies.

But with that, Bay excused himself, apologized and walked off the stage.

Startled, Stinziano apologized to the audience but still thanked Bay several times.

“Welcome to Vegas. It’s live shows, folks,” Stinziano said.

Watch Artist Michael David Set His Painting on Fire (VIDEO)

New York artist Michael David pioneered his edgy encaustic painting technique in the 1970s when he was an enfant terrible of the downtown art scene and bass player with seminal punk rockers including members of the Dead Boys, Ramones, New York Dolls and Plasmatics. Three decades later, he’s still using hot wax (and found objects) to create powerfully physical paintings that explore spiritual metaphors.

“I discovered encaustic (the ancient Egyptian method incorporating pigment mixed with hot wax) in 1975 when I was at Parsons,” David says. “I loved the immediacy of the process, the physicality, and how I was able to embed objects and create narrative in abstraction. I felt it was a perfect actualization of myself through painting.”

Although gases released in the process with which David has experimented over the years have caused neuropathy in his legs, he continues to push his technique to the limits, as evidenced in his latest painting, “Cluster of Blessings.” The 300-pound work includes barbed wire, foliage, and even shreds of his work clothes. To create its rough-hewn, apocalyptic layers, David took the painting to a remote field and set it on fire.

“The painting was created over a period of six years. I wanted to do something as dramatic and violent as nature itself,” he says.

The title, ‘Cluster of Blessings’ is a Buddhist term for the Gohonzon, a mandala people chant to in order to attain enlightenment. It contains all states of life, from complete happiness to abject suffering. I am moved by that, and wanted to represent that in the painting. I felt that burning was a natural process to unify the painting’s multiple layers and immense size and echo the narrative of this work.

In 1983, David was the youngest recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship. He first exhibited at New York’s historic Sidney Janis Gallery in 1981 and M. Knoedler represented him for 20 years. His work is included in the permanent public collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim Museum and the Jewish Museum in New York, among others. David currently runs Life on Mars Gallery in the Bushwick arts district of Brooklyn, New York. He also lives part-time in Atlanta, Georgia, where he teaches and mentors artists in his Fine Arts Workshop and Fine Arts Atelier.

One of the Atelier’s breakout painters, Karen Schwartz, says of David: “Michael is all about having NO FEAR. Go for it! The other principles he preaches — integrity and freedom, come from the ‘no fear, kill the cat’ approach to making art. Also remarkable about Michael is that he tells you to go with who you are. If you are messy and imprecise, then, go with that and don’t try to control what’s natural for you. ‘Own it’, and make it a strength of your work.”

Michael David’s upcoming one-man show at Atlanta’s Bill Lowe Gallery opens on November 15th.
