4 Office Fashion Rules From a Woman Who’s Dressed Kate Middleton

When it comes to a model for polished, proper, and utterly professional dressing, you can’t find a better example than Kate Middleton. Her position as a royal and obligatory outings require sophisticated, elegant looks, but it’s also a style vibe that seems pretty ingrained in her style DNA. And while the Duchess reps many designers you’ve heard of (think her customized Tory Burch, the Stuart Weitzman wedges the queen can’t stand, and that Alexander McQueen dress), she’s also shown off a few British labels that have been a little more undercover until now.

Kate in a Goat dress last year

Goat has been once such case, with designer Jane Lewis offering up chic understated styles that the Duchess seems to love. Up until now it had been relatively tricky to find the brand in the U.S. but that’s recently changed, with the announcement that the label would begin selling at Saks Fifth Avenue. When we got the chance to talk with Lewis about how easy it is to translate Kate’s style into savvy everywoman office outfits, we knew we owed it to everyone who gets a pay stub.

“There’s been an underlying belief that fashion had no place within the corporate environment and that it could diminish our credibility in some way,” she explained. “Fashion doesn’t have to be frivolous. Style is innate in each of us, and it’s what sets us apart from the generic. A working environment is as good a place as any to show off your personality.”

Rule 1: Think about your workplace.
What works at your friend’s office might not fly at yours, and understanding that is key. “Assess your environment and your requirements. Be honest with yourself and audit trends as appropriate,” Lewis said. Once you’ve figured out the essentials that make a stellar outfit for your field of work, invest in some key basics. “They’ll become the foundation of an edited yet versatile working wardrobe.”

Rule 2: Don’t be afraid of color.
“It can be empowering and feminine and is an excellent way to tap into a current trend,” she said, insisting that even the color-averse can experiment with shades other than black and navy. “Mid colors like burgundy, fern green, and dark teal are what I call ‘noncolors’ that are good for people who may feel overwhelmed by strong brights.”

Rule 3: Rely on accessories to update and upgrade.
To inject some new life into office fashion made up of dependable building blocks, add statement jewelry or standout shoes. “One feature accent is enough to update an outfit,” Lewis instructed, specifying that one is indeed the magic number. “One thing at a time is enough. Discretion can make a powerful impression and have enormous impact.” Consider a large cuff bracelet with shortened sleeves that show it off, a belt with color or print, or a pair of playful shoes that peek out from underneath your trousers.

Rule 4: Stay comfortable.
Because, really, what’s the good of all these guidelines if you’re squirming and fidgeting? “Don’t underestimate the confidence and elegance comfort lends you. It’s the foundation of dressing well for your environment.” Ban uncomfortable cuts, pieces you’re always tugging at, and ouch-worthy heels from the office.

Kate in Goat’s Redgrave coat, the first piece she ever wore from the label

When you read her suggestions with Kate in mind, it totally clicks into place that, yup, they’re all lessons that the Duchess has learned and applied. And about that famous mum of two? Lewis is much like any of the other designers Kate’s worn, completely unaware that the royal will be stepping out in one of her pieces (maybe because she’s shopping online?)

“It was a lovely surprise and great honor,” Lewis remembered about the time she first saw Kate in Goat (she seems to be especially fond of the label’s classic, tailored coats).

How Kate Middleton Handles Walking in Heels All Day That Aren’t Wedges

Kate Middleton may love her Stuart Weitzman wedges with all of her heart, but sadly, the Queen does not. So, how does the Duchess of Cambridge stay comfortable on those days she has to swap out her trusty shoes for a pair of pumps instead? $ 20 Alice Bow sheepskin insoles designed by Rachel Bowditch.

The Daily Mail reports that these are “Kate’s no-slip shoe secret: The £13 trick that lets the Duchess of Cambridge walk in vertiginous heels all day.”

According to the Alice Bow website, the insoles are “carefully hand crafted in London from specially selected, high quality, Italian coloured leathers, that not only look good but feel great under foot. The superior quality orthopaedic padding meanwhile, absorbs the shocks from your busy lifestyle and delivers breathable, antibacterial, long lasting comfort and confidence.”

Kate Middleton Is Not the Most Impressive Royal Outfit Re-Wearer

Princess Anne, daughter of Queen Elizabeth and sister to Prince Charles, just proved she has some serious fashion mettle. At Royal Ascot yesterday, the princess wore a mustard yellow coat and matching hat the world has seen her in before—30 years ago!

The first time the princess wore the outfit was at the Trooping of the Colour in 1980, the same event that happened this weekend. In the older pic, below, it appears that Anne has on a different hat and brooch, but other than that, it’s a nearly identical outfit (which makes you wonder how meticulously the royals store their clothes).

No, one of those adorable little boys isn’t Prince William. From L to R: the Duchess of Kent, the Queen Mother, Prince Edward, Princess Anne, Princess Alexandra, and the Duchess of Gloucester. The little boy pointing at the crowd is Anne’s son Peter.

While Princess Anne’s outfit re-wearing capabilities surely put any other royal to shame, there’s no denying Kate Middleton‘s becoming a pro at it too. Beyond that, the Kate effect has fans buying outfits she wears in unprecedented numbers (though, in fairness, it’s likely because earlier generations wore mostly custom creations).

The striped navy-and-white top Kate wore to watch polo with Prince George this weekend? Three-month waiting list.

Kate Middleton & Prince George Remind Us That Navy & White Are Just Right For Summer Outings

One day after appearing at the Trooping of the Colour festivities June 13, the royal family stepped out to watch as William and Harry took part in a charity polo match at Tetbury in Gloucestershire, England. The Queen was in attendance, as was the Prince of Wales. But of course, all eyes were on the Duchess of Cambridge and her son, Prince George.

The mother-son duo wore matching navy and white outfits that were fitting for a summer outing. Duchess Kate chose a navy-and-white striped top and slim-fitting jeans, while her dapper 21-month-old boy wore a navy cardigan, shorts and — gasp! — Crocs. The rubber footwear, beloved by kids and Mario Batali, has made its way into the regal wardrobe. Every parent understands the necessity of Crocs: they’re easy to put on and take off, they can be hosed down and they’re inexpensive. That said, they’re not what we expected to see the heir to the British throne wearing. Ahh, the royals: they’re just like us!

Despite being the center of attention, the duchess looked like any other mom chasing after her tow-headed tot. Still no sign of Princess Charlotte, but we’ll keep hoping.

Confirmation: Dressing Kate Middleton is Absolutely as Amazing as You’d Think

When I got to sneak backstage after Friday’s Zimmermann show to talk to the designer, you know what I had on my must-ask-about list: Kate Middleton. The duchess put the Australian label firmly on the map when she wore its crisp white eyelet dress Down Under last April.

“That definitely would have been one of the biggest things that’s happened to us in 20 years of business,” designer Nicky Zimmermann told me with a grin. “It affected our parents, our family. Everybody loved it! If you’re Australian, British royalty is a big deal and it meant a lot to a lot of people. She’s the epitome of a sophisticated, beautiful young woman, and we are massive fans.”

Nicky was on holiday with her fam when Kate decided to wear the frock (typically designers and brands have no idea that a major celeb is going to wear a piece until they’re out and being photographed).

“I was walking through caves with my children with no communication,” she said when I asked when and where she found out. “I got back to the house and every person that I was with, their phones were going berserk. We flipped on the news and ‘Kate Middleton Wears Zimmermann on Manly Beach’ was the title.”

Ahh! I can’t even imagine how thrilling that moment must have been.

If you’re wondering what Kate could wear from the just-debuted fall collection, I’m one step ahead of you.

I’d love to see her in this multi-colored gown. The ruffles at the shoulders and voluminous skirt moved so beautifully on the runway, I’m sure the magic would be repeated on a red carpet or stepping out of one of the monarchy’s cars.

The neckline of this suede beauty is a little too low for Kate, but I think she’d look fantastic in it.

Could you see Kate in either of these fall designs? Ever wondered how crazy exciting it must be to realize that someone so famous is wearing something you created?

Kate Middleton Is Getting A Makeover (Not That She Needs One)

It looks like royals can’t even escape a little judgment from their in-laws.

As long time Kate Middleton advocates, we have adopted a “Kate-can-do-no-wrong” mentality, specifically when it comes to her stylish wardrobe. The Queen, on the other hand, seems to feel differently. The Mail reported Sunday that Kate Middleton is set to undergo a “subtle but significant regal makeover” for an upcoming trip to Australia this spring. The makeover will be a big change from those $ 72 dresses we love so much.

The wardrobe overhaul comes with direct support from Queen Elizabeth II, who has commissioned her own personal dresser, Angela Kelly, to work with Kate’s stylists on a brand new look. Designs by Alexander McQueen and Alice Temperley have already been in the works for gowns and dresses.

Additionally, Kate will be encouraged to wear the Queen’s favorite tiaras (no biggie), along with some of her other most beloved jewels to aide in her regal image.

Her majesty is not the only person close to Kate to critique her clothing. In fact, just last year, her friend encouraged her to start dressing a bit more “quirky.”

Sounds like there are some conflicting views on her royal closet. But one thing is certain, Kate will look flawless no matter what she wears.

Her most royal fashion moments:
