Ring footage might not be very useful for catching criminals

Ring footage might not be very useful for catching criminalsRing has said that camera footage sent to police can help reduce burglaries and catch criminals, but how effective is it, really? It might not be as helpful as you might think. NBC News has conducted an investigation suggesting that Ring's video doorbells and security cameras haven't been of much use to at least some police forces. Of the 40 law enforcement agencies the news outlet reached, just 13 said they'd made arrests after reviewing Ring footage, while two offered rough estimates. The remainder either made zero arrests (13 agencies) or didn't know how effective Ring had been despite partnerships that had lasted more than a year.

Here’s When Stranger Things Season 4 Might Premiere

This post contains spoilers for Stranger Things Season 3, and the newly released Season 4 teaser trailer.

[poilib element=”accentDivider”]

Chances are you’re desperately counting down the days to when Stranger Things Season 4 will premiere. We’ve broken down all the biggest questions about the future of the Netflix sci-fi hit below, and will keep this post updated with new developments as they are announced.

Netflix officially renewed Stranger Things for a fourth season back in September 2019. The news came with a statement from Netflix’s Chief Content Officer, Ted Sarandos:

“The Duffer Brothers have captivated viewers around the world with Stranger Things and we’re thrilled to expand our relationship with them to bring their vivid imaginations to other film and series projects our members will love. We can’t wait to see what the Duffer Brothers have in store when they step outside the world of The Upside Down.”

Stranger Things Season 4 Trailer

So far, Netflix has released one trailer for Season 4 of Stranger Things, which gives us our first glimpse of David Harbor’s Jim Hopper (HE’S ALIVE) in what appears to be a prison camp in Russia. The streamer revealed the teaser trailer on Valentine’s Day 2020, with the caption, “From Russia With Love…” Watch the teaser below:

When Will New Episodes of Stranger Things 4 Release on Netflix?

Netflix hasn’t set a release date for Season 4 yet, but the Season 3 finale may give us some clues for when Stranger Things Season 4 will take place: Before Joyce, Will, Jonathan, and Eleven move away from Hawkins at the end of the episode, Mike and Eleven discuss visiting each other for Thanksgiving and Christmas of that year.

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=stranger-things-season-3-gallery&captions=true”]

While the events of Season 1 technically happened in November (and prominently featured Christmas lights) we have yet to see the show tackle Thanksgiving or Christmas – and a Christmas setting could pave the way for some awesome ’80s homages to the likes of Gremlins, Die Hard (again!), or Silent Night, Deadly Night. Season 2 took place around Halloween, while Season 3 is set in the summer in the days leading up to July 4, so if the show wants to continue with a holiday theme, Christmas would make sense – although the young cast may age too quickly for the show to believably pull off Season 4 taking place just a few months after Season 3.

In terms of when Stranger Things will actually premiere, we can look to its previous drops on Netflix for some clues. Season 1 premiered in July 2016, Season 2 in October 2017, and Season 3 in July 2019. If the Duffer brothers continue to follow this pattern, then we can assume Season 4 could premiere in October 2020. However, the show is still in the early stages of production, with plenty of shooting and post-production work ahead. So, with Season 4’s narrative possibly taking place during Christmas, perhaps a December 2020 release date isn’t out of the question?

Is Stranger Things 4 the Last Season?

Back in August 2017, the Duffer brothers gave an interview in which they said Stranger Things would end after Season 4. “We think it will be a four-season thing and then out,” Ross Duffer told Vulture.

Matt Duffer added that continuing the show past that point was possible: “We just have to keep adjusting the story,” he said, but noted, “I don’t know if we can justify something bad happening to them once a year.” Then again, a lot can change in two years, and Shawn Levy certainly seemed to think a Season 5 was on the table as recently as last April.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2016/09/23/the-stranger-things-kids-try-british-snacks”]

Season 3 expanded on the threat of the Upside Down by revealing that the Russian military was also investigating the creepy alternate dimension, potentially seeking to weaponize the creatures inhabiting the Upside Down, like the Demogorgon. That leaves a lot of narrative ground still to explore, in addition to the fact that we’ve had very little explanation into the mythology of the Upside Down, what the Mind Flayer actually wants, or why people seem so eager to venture into a creepy parallel universe full of deadly monsters in the first place.

Although Netflix doesn’t release ratings information for most of its series, Stranger Things has inarguably become a global phenomenon. According to third-party reports, is the most popular streaming show on the web, even when it’s between seasons, so there’s no reason to think that Netflix would cancel Stranger Things before the Duffer Brothers choose to end it. (If anything, the streaming network might encourage the Duffers to stretch it longer, as HBO reportedly tried to do with Game of Thrones.)

What Will Stranger Things Season 4 Be About?

Now that we have a Season 4 teaser trailer featuring Hopper alive and (mostly) well, we can assume that some of the stories will take place in Russia. While Netflix hasn’t released a full Season 4 synopsis, it did reveal a few details about Hopper in a press release message from the Duffer Brothers:

“We’re excited to officially confirm that production on Stranger Things 4 is now underway — and even more excited to announce the return of Hopper! Although it’s not all good news for our American; he is imprisoned far from home in the snowy wasteland of Kamchatka, where he will face dangers both human…and other. Meanwhile, back in the states, a new horror is beginning to surface, something long-buried, something that connects everything.”

With Hopper still in the mix, we expect Season 4 to delve much deeper into the mechanics of the Upside Down and what it might be used for: an army of attack-dog Demogorgons that Russia intends to release on an unsuspecting American public? A new energy source (since the Mind Flayer sure lets out a lot of lightning)? At this point, any explanation into the rules of the Upside Down would be welcome – and we also need to know why the Russians are forcing their prisoners to build a train track – what are they trying to transport?

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/07/04/stranger-things-season-3-what-happened-to-spoiler”]

We also expect Season 4 to explore what happened to Hopper while he was in the Upside Down and how he got out. From the teaser trailer, it’s difficult to ascertain exactly what kind of mental state Hopper is in, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see him utilized as a new host for the Mind Flayer (or maybe the Russians will brainwash and Winter Soldier him) just to up the emotional stakes for Eleven next season. The show will also no doubt need to deal with Eleven’s lost powers and how she gets them back.

The show has a few other loose ends to tie up before it’s over: Season 2 introduced Eleven’s “sister” from Dr. Brenner’s experiment, Eight, aka Kali – and even though fans weren’t wild about that episode, there are still a whole bunch of other super-powered kids out there who might come in handy against the Mind Flayer. We need to learn more about those experiments and the kids that were created as a result. We also need to learn the whereabouts of Dr. Brenner himself since right now he’s a Chekhov’s Gun that’s still hanging over Eleven.

And between the Byers family leaving Hawkins and the introduction of Russia, the show finally has an opportunity to expand beyond its small-town setting. Season 3 established that the town is special – at least when it comes to opening the gate to the Upside Down – but Alexei also revealed that there were other gates and other keys, which gives this conspiracy a much wider scope.

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=the-15-best-horror-tv-shows-of-the-last-10-years&captions=true”]

Since half of the main characters are still in Hawkins, we’re probably not going to leave the town entirely (and hopefully people will actually start asking questions about the disappearances of so many Hawkins residents, including the newspaper’s editor and a couple of young lifeguards) but it would be nice to explore other parts of the Stranger Things universe. Still, given that the end of Season 3 also introduced the concept of “Satanic Panic” as a way of exploring the weird goings-on in Hawkins, that rising hysteria could also play a role in Season 4.

What do you hope to see in Stranger Things Season 4? Share your theories and predictions in the comments.

Whoa, Elsa Might Actually Be The Villain In ‘Frozen’

Remember how the people of Arendelle freaked out when they found out Elsa had ice powers in “Frozen“? And you’re all like, “Chill, people. She’s cool.”

Well, what if they actually had a point?

There’s definitely a lot more bloodshed in the vid than we remember in the movie, but the YouTubers also made a video turning Harry Potter into a villain, so at least Elsa has some good bad company.

These Kit Harington Photos Hint Jon Snow Might Be Coming Back

Kit Harington knows nothing about keeping a secret.

tv show gifs

Image via HBO/HuffPost

The “Game of Thrones” season finale had people everywhere going crazy over what happened to Jon Snow. After the character was stabbed by the Night’s Watch and left to die in the cold (et tu, Olly?), fans went nuts speculating about various ways he may have actually survived. Even so, Harington has maintained that Snow died and he’s gone for good. And that appeared to be the case, until now.

Various pictures of Harington at Wimbledon have started popping up online and there’s one thing about them that has fans getting excited:

Kit Harington still has his long hair!

kit harington

It has been nearly a month since the finale and Harington is still honoring his “GoT” oath to keep his long hair and beard, which seems to indicate that he may still need them for his sworn duties to protect the realm from White Walkers and look like a total boss on the show.

For more proof, just look at Harington’s other photos.

Here’s the actor perhaps in shock that we all caught on:

479198742

And here he is again, seemingly congratulating all of us for figuring it out (good work, everyone!):

479221738

Now, you might think to yourself, “Who cares? That beard is dope. I’d keep my hair like that, too.” And you’re partly right. The beard and hair are hella dope. But the problem is Harington doesn’t seem to think so.

The actor previously told Rolling Stone about his plans after the show and they didn’t include keeping his long locks:

“I told my agent, ‘No more swords, no more horses,'” he said. “You [don’t want to] get stuck in things. And maybe I can cut my fucking hair.”

So is Harington really coming back to the show? It’s all still speculation, but these pictures certainly don’t indicate otherwise. Actress Emilia Clarke even said recently his return is a 50-50 chance.

Plus, if he really doesn’t want people to think he’s coming back, he’s doing a terrible job of hiding his Jon Snow frowny face:

479264852

Like, are you Kittin’ me? Nobody is that frowny. Nobody!

Seven Cartoon Characters Who Might be on the Autism Spectrum

2015-07-02-1435863470-3995659-depositphotoanimatedtelev1.jpg 2015-07-02-1435863503-6002835-depositphotos_46884227Collectiblesmurfcharacters1.jpg 2015-07-02-1435863535-2635888-depositphotos_48404605CookieMonster.jpg
“Mom, I think that person has autism,” says my 10-year-old son Noah. And because his brother Evan is on the spectrum, he has developed an intuitive ability to detect even the most subtle signs of autism.

Sometimes Noah notices an inability to decipher social cues. Sometimes it’s an unusual speech pattern or a repetitive behavior. Once it was something as simple as a mother holding the hand of her young teenage boy.

Noah’s A-dar* got me thinking about which cartoon characters might have an autism diagnosis if such a thing existed in the world of animation. But then, like every responsible attorney, realized I probably should include some sort of disclaimer.

Caution: This post is intended for people who have an appreciation for sarcasm and humor.Yes, I know that autism is a pervasive developmental disorder characterized by deficits in social interaction and communication, a limited range of activities and interests and often the presence of repetitive behaviors. And I know that if a person exhibits one or even some of these traits, it does not necessarily mean he/she has autism. But, for the fun of it, I have diagnosed seven cartoon characters who meet at least one of the criteria for autism. Just remember; sarcasm and humor – or at least one mom’s attempt at it.

1. Cookie Monster Not only does this Sesame Street character exhibit a significant preoccupation with cookies, but his expressive language is significantly delayed when compared to his monster peers. Like many on the spectrum, if he had his way and the writers didn’t cave in to pressures to make him eat healthier, Cookie Monster would happily live on a self-restricted diet consisting of only his preferred food.

2. Schroeder, the object of Lucy’s unrequited affection, is a precocious piano playing prodigy. His savant skills are perfect, and his knowledge of all things Beethoven are nothing less than impressive. Typically, Schroeder is content to play his music and engages in very little on-going dialogue. He can, however, become easily agitated if either his piano playing or his idol Beethoven are criticized.

3. One of the 101 Dalmatians. The prevalence of autism is 1 in 68. Statistically speaking, if you have 101 Dalmatians, chances are at least one of them will fall somewhere on the spectrum.

4. Tigger clearly has issues with attention and focus. With all his bouncing around, we can also speculate that his sensory-seeking behaviors are indicative of an autism diagnosis.

5. Elmer Fudd Forget about the fact that he really needs a good speech pathologist, the guy is obsessed with killing a rabbit. Does he even talk about anything else, ever?

6. Brainy Smurf is a know-it-all intellectual who isn’t afraid to impart his wisdom upon the entire Smurf clan Do they want it? Mostly they don’t, so it’s not unusual for Brainy to be kicked outside the village or smacked over the head with a mallet. Despite the abuse, he remains oblivious to the fact that his fellow Smurfs have no interest in his “wisdom.”

7. SpongeBob wins the award for having the most characteristics of autism. Although hyperactive, he is extremely focused and determined and will do whatever it takes to accomplish a goal. Often, he is oblivious to impending danger, and his lack of awareness tends to put him and others at risk for harm. He has a hard time detecting lies, and his kind-hearted and innocent nature means he is nice to everyone, notably those who are not always kind to him. SpongeBob also has anxiety. He is especially anxious about clowns and the dark.

*A-dar is a made-up term used to refer to someone with an intuitive ability to identify an individual on the autism spectrum.

Which cartoon characters would you add to this list?

Why These Fashionable Siblings Might Be The Next Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen

Fashion loves a sibling act.

Before the Middleton sisters earned their style cred and way before any Hadid girl ever walked the runway, style lovers were all about Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. From child stars to fashion phenoms, the Olsens broke so many barriers that it’s hard to keep track. Most notably however, they have become some of the industry’s most respected designers, on par with the likes of Marc Jacobs and Michael Kors (and they’ve got the CFDA Award to prove it!).

Now, another duo that’s been in the spotlight since infancy is primed to make some fashion noise: Jaden and Willow Smith.

The Smith kids have made it pretty clear that they’re style obsessed. Willow recently nabbed a plum role modeling Marc Jacobs’ fall 2015 campaign, while Jaden just gave an interview to GQ, explaining his strange choice to wear a superhero costume to Kim Kardashian’s wedding and his prom (to “heighten my experience” and address the feeling that he “needed to protect everyone there and needed to have the proper gear to do so”).

stylish-siblings

While Jaden’s talked about wearing clothes of his own make before, the two have never spoken about an actual fashion line. Even so, if the House of Smith designs pop up in the future, no one can pretend to be surprised. The two have too much in common with the Olsen twins for it to not work.

They’re not afraid of stepping outside the box. Think about it: did the world even know what whipping your hair back and forth meant before Willow popularized it? Likewise, MK&A made bag-lady chic a thing when they first moved to New York City.

When they can’t find what they want, they make it. The Row was first conceptualized as an answer to Ashley’s quest for the perfect t-shirt, and that need to make something for yourself is something Willow totally gets. She’s said she writes her own novels and then reads them.

They get the power of a sartorial moment. When Mary-Kate got engaged, there was no simple solitaire. The more boho twin opted for a serious statement piece from Cartier, bought vintage at Sotheby’s. For the Smith kids, there’s the whole superhero costume thing, worn most recently to his prom.

Yet they totally understand comfort. The Olsens’ signature style is made up a lot of loose blouses and long maxis, all comfortable enough looking for a nap. Jaden has included a lot of bike shorts in his recent outfits, while Willow has said she loves wearing “clothes that I can climb trees in.”

The Smith kids have created plenty of soundbites chatting between themselves (reference “because living”), and the twins have done it too. “Some of our memories are shared, We don’t know what actually happened to whom,” Mary-Kate has said. “One of us was stung by a bee, but we can’t remember who, because we both felt it.”

See? They’re practically quadruplets.

Gisele Might Not Be Retiring From the Runway After All

23-100-best-hairstyle-gisele-bundchen-beachy-waves

After days of frenzied coverage of what was widely reported to be Gisele’s final runway show, her longtime agent confirmed to The New York Times that the supermodel’s “final” show in Sao Paolo, Brazil, was not, in fact, her last. Instead, it seems, she will only be closing the chapter on her catwalking days in Brazil.

Anne Nelson, Bundchen’s longtime agent at IMG Models told The Times that the 34-year-old stunner Times would be “clos[ing] the chapter on the Brazilian runway…It is important that we continue to work on all kinds of capacities within the fashion industry.”

News of Bundchen’s runway retirement has been plastered over thousands of Web Sites and news outlets across the globe ever since the supermodel told a Brazilian newspaper that she was quitting her catwalking days because her body “asked her to stop.”

Bundchen herself seemed to confirm the news in a post on Instagram the day before the show, writing: “I am grateful that at 14, I was given the opportunity to start this journey. Today after 20 years in the industry, it is a privilege to be doing my last fashion show by choice and yet still be working in other facets of the business.”

According to the Times story, IMG was inundated with calls about the supermodel’s runway retirement, and confirmed that the Brazilian bombshell is still wildly in demand.”I think a lot of people will still want her on the runway,” Nelson told The Times. “Will she want to do it? That’s a whole other story. It would have to come within an interesting angle, a unique opportunity. Will she do it? I can’t guarantee that. But that people will call for her, yes.”

It’s no surprise that Bundchen would want to limit her time on the runway—indeed, her catwalk appearances aren’t quite as frequent as other runway regulars—and the new positioning seems to open the door for special, one-off opportunities or appearances about which Bundchen feels passionately. So will she walk again or won’t she? It appears it’s an open-ended question.

Are you relieved that Gisele hasn’t completely the runway? Tell us in the comments!

A College Education Might Be The Thing Standing Between You And Marriage

Blame the drop in marriage rates on declining American values, and you may be ignoring what often provides the push for couples to walk down the aisle: education.

That’s what Andrew Cherlin, a Johns Hopkins sociologist, argues in his new book Labor’s Love Lost. Cherlin told The Huffington Post that the move away from marriage has to do with the fact that those without a four-year college education face fewer job options and less financial stability, which causes them to delay marriage or eschew it altogether. A disregard of morals isn’t the culprit here.

And it’s not a subconscious choice: 34 percent of young adults cited financial security as the reason they weren’t currently married, according to a recent Pew Research Center poll.

Young adults with only a high school diploma aren’t earning as much as their parents and grandparents.

Between 1979 and 2007, young male high school graduates saw their real earnings fall by about 30 percent. Unlike their mid-century predecessors, men in this moderately educated group can’t expect to be as financially stable as their parents or grandparents, so they end up putting off marriage or avoiding it completely.

In 2013, marriage rates hit an unprecedented low, bottoming out at 50.3 percent. Compare that to 1950, when 82 percent of non-widowed women between the ages of 18 and 64 were married, and it’s hard to ignore the shift.

Cherlin ties this change to the “slow-motion collapse” of what we used to call the “working class” or “blue collar” family. Forty or 50 years ago, these families took on mid-level jobs that didn’t require higher schooling, so men were able to make enough to support a wife and kids. Many of those jobs have been lost with modern technology. (It’s worth noting that mid-century women weren’t given opportunities to be household breadwinners and often relied on husbands for economic stability.)

Without financial security, couples are taking increasingly complex relationship paths in lieu of marriage.

Nowadays, young men and women without college degrees are facing dimmer job prospects than ever, so they’re avoiding marriage. Without a stable income, it’s not advantageous for either partner — man or woman — to enter into a seemingly permanent union.

“More and more of the moderately educated young adults, those without college degrees, are having kids in living-together relationships, often ending those relationships after a couple of years, starting another one, perhaps having a kid in another relationship and building unstable, complex families,” he said.

Of course, this marriage gap wouldn’t have happened if we didn’t shift our norms since mid-century America. It’s now more acceptable and common for couples to cohabit and have children before marriage. But the big difference between college grads and those without a degree is that cohabiting college grads tend to be more economically stable and make it to the altar before they have children, while the less educated are having children before marriage and then breaking up.

Closing the marriage gap may involve putting more folks without college degrees on the path to stable, mid-level jobs.

It’s this “interaction effect between a changing economy and changing attitudes,” as Cherlin put it, that he argues has led to the marriage gap.

The remedies? Cherlin said that more education is needed — not in the form of four-year college degrees, but vocational education at community colleges that can put young adults on the path to entering the few mid-level jobs that are left. He also said that labor market interventions, like strengthening unions and increasing the minimum wage, might bring the moderately-educated closer to their college graduate counterparts when it comes to marriage.

“As far as I can tell, a college degree is really the closest thing we have to a class boundary in the US,” Cherlin said. “Certainly in terms of family life.”

20 Gifts That Cost Nothing to Make — But Just Might Be Priceless

My husband and I are very lucky — my husband teaches school and I am a stay-at-home mom, which means that we are both currently doing exactly what we want to do. Like I said, we are very lucky indeed.

But around this time of year we notice (to put it delicately) that we aren’t as well off financially as we would have been if we had chosen other career paths. And that makes it difficult to buy gifts for others.

Which means year after year we make a pact with each other not to spend any money on ourselves (so that we will have funds to spend on our kids and other family members). But this pact hasn’t stopped us from finding a way to have something to give each other on Christmas morning.

And after 16 years of marriage, I feel that our holiday financial situation may have been a blessing in disguise… we’ve been forced to think about each other and what is most important. Sure, one of these years I’d love to have iPads, televisions, bikes, and the like under the tree, but I can say without any reservation that even though we don’t have money, I have never gone to bed on Christmas night feeling poor.

So this year as I’ve been thinking gift giving, I thought maybe I would share with you some of the gifts that we’ve given to our kids, our family members, and each other. Because when I reflect on my most favorite gifts, they are the ones that have cost virtually nothing.

The following list is a collection of some of my favorites:

1. The Board Game Challenge.

2014-12-07-BoardGameChallenge400.jpg

Have a board game lover at your house? (Like my 10-year-old?) Well, print them out one of these cards and slip it in an envelope. Then together, after the envelope has been opened, fill out the five board (or card) games that you will be playing with each other and get started! You won’t regret it… unless of course you get schooled by your 10-year-old!

2. Memorize a Favorite Passage.

2014-12-07-BiblePassage570.jpg

This may take some time and some sneakiness. Step one… find out the favorite written passage of your loved one. Is it a scripture? A sonnet? A monologue? Or a paragraph from a beloved book? Got it? Good. Now it’s time for step two, which is: memorize!

With memorization complete, all that’s left is step three: the delivery. (When I did this, my husband opened a box that only held a piece of paper with a reference to the passage written on it. When he questioned what it was, I told him… and to this day he will say it was one of his favorite gifts of all time. He even still has that piece of paper hanging on the wall in his office.)

3. Housekeeping Card.

2014-12-07-Gloves570.jpg

Does your spouse, roommate, or significant other have a household chore that they just hate to do? Taking out the garbage? Scrubbing toilets? Sorting laundry? If so, this is a great gift. Give them a card, letter, or note explaining that you will take over that job for them for a certain period of time.

WARNING: Be specific about this gift… If you say you are going to do their chore, then you really need to do it, so let them know exactly what you are going to do and how long you are prepared to do it. For a day? A week? A month? Let them know what to expect from you and then don’t offer more than you can deliver. This will make both you and the recipient of the gift happy campers.

4. _____ of the Month Club.

2014-12-07-OftheMonthClub400.jpg

What is your speciality? Soup? Bread? Cookies? Casseroles? Whatever it is, you should share it with someone who would appreciate it! A grandparent, an aunt or a neighbor… Just print out the card and you are good to go! Then the recipient of your gift not only gets something delicious once a month, but they also get a visit from you. (Which will probably be just as appreciated as your tasty vittles are!) So go ahead and do it! Make someone you love an official member of your salsa (or cake or chicken dish) of the month club! The possibilities here are endless…

5. When Skies Are Gray…

2014-12-07-WhenSkiesAreGray570.jpg

Is there someone on your list this year who is going through a hard time? If so, maybe a “When Skies Are Gray” Kit could help. All you need to include in this kit is a bundle of letters or images that you put together into different envelopes. What kind of letters and images? Well, things to help get them through a rotten day… maybe a funny “remember when” story… or an “I love you because” letter… or a “10 Reasons Why You Are Awesome” note. Other things you can include in the envelopes are quotes or thoughts that help you through tough times as well as some photos of good times together. Put something different in each envelope.

Try to gather together a small bundle (10-15 envelopes) and then tie them up with a bow. It’s surprising how something as simple as an “I’m lucky to have you in my life because…” can help you through a tough day.

6. A Tell-Me Notebook.

2014-12-07-Notebook570.jpg

This is a gift that I have given to my grandparents and love! All you need is a simple notebook. (I gave my grandparents these spiral bound notebooks because I wanted them to just sit down and write whatever came into their minds and not worry about handwriting or doing anything fancy in a nice book.)

Now of course you don’t just give someone an empty notebook… you need to fill the book with questions (I did one every three pages so there was plenty of room to write if needed).

The questions will vary depending on who you are giving the notebook to. The questions I asked my grandparents were like: “Tell me about your first house.” “Tell me about something you are proud of.” “What do you remember most about your mother?” “Tell me about three memorable friends.”

Think about what you want to know from the person you are giving the gift to… and then be prepared for some really terrific conversations.

7. Daily reading date.

2014-12-07-ReadtoMePunchCard400.jpg

Our kids read every day… but that doesn’t mean that I read out loud to them every day. Recently, as I was reading aloud to the 3-year-old, I noticed that my older two had gathered around to listen to the story. When I asked them what was going on, I was surprised to discover that they said they miss me reading out loud to them. That is when I thought about this card.

Each one of my kids is going to get one this year. The triangles will count as the punches on the card, which makes the card above a 20-punch card. Then I will have the kids redeem them when they want me to read one of their chapters out loud to them, or just feel like reading a picture book together.

8. 50 Things I Learned By…

2014-12-07-GrandpasBookouttolunch570.jpg

Is there someone on your list who is reaching a milestone? Turning 40? Celebrating 30 years together? Then making them something like this is perfect. When my mom turned 50, I made her a framed sign that told her the 50 things I learned from her by the time she turned 50.

Later, when my grandparents turned 80, I made them these books with simple illustrations on card stock sharing the ways they influenced my life and what I’ve learned from them. These gifts have been some of my most favorite to make, and are wonderful for anyone who has helped to shape your life.

9. Magic Car Wash.

2014-12-07-Clean570.jpg

This gift may have to be given before Christmas… because for this gift you will need to have access to the recipient’s vehicle. I usually do this while my husband is at work. I drive over to his school, take his truck, zoom over to the gas station and give it the once-over, quickly cleaning it inside and out, and then return it to its space before he even knows it was gone. When he leaves work, he finds a clean vehicle and a note on the dashboard.

10. Freedom From Responsibility (a.k.a. “I Will Take the Kids for the Night”).

2014-12-07-roses570.jpg

Sometimes what one really needs is just some quiet time alone. We all love our children and our homes, but sometimes we need a break with time to ourselves to regroup. If that’s the case with anyone on your list, then one of the best gifts you can give is to take his or her responsibilities away for a few hours and let them recharge their batteries.

Do this by giving a card, letter, or note tied up with a bow. Then, once the gift has been given, decide right then and there when the gift will be redeemed… pick a day and a time right away! (And then stick to it! The gift is meaningless unless you follow through!)

11. Read This When…

2014-12-07-ReadThisWhenLetters570.jpg

This gift is perfect for college students who are away from home. For this gift, you will be writing a number of short letters, putting them in separate envelopes and then labeling the envelopes with when they should be read. The topics of the letters you write will depend on the relationship you have with your college student, but some ideas for these letters are: Read this when: you fail a test, you have a terrible date, you’ve had a rotten day, you feel homesick, you think you are in love, etc. Seal each letter and tie the bundle up with a bow.

12. A Personalized Playlist.

2014-12-07-CassetteTapes570.jpg

Think back to junior high, when we made those awesome mixtapes for each other… you know, on cassettes… that was pretty cool. And you knew that your friend chose those songs because she knows you so well or that guy chose those songs because he was secretly trying to let you know how much he was madly in love with you? Well… how great would it be to get one of those tapes again?

Nowadays we can either burn a CD or download a personalized playlist for that friend, sibling, or special someone. Maybe a list of songs for a sibling from back in the day, a woman power list for a good friend who needs a pick-me-up to and from work — or my husband made a running playlist for me that I love. Be creative!

13. Park Tour Permit.

2014-12-07-ParkTourPermit400.jpg

Find five local parks and tour each one. (Not all in the same day!) Have your children compare slides, big toys, open space, etc., and decide which park is the best.

14. Netflix Night Punch Card.

2014-12-07-NetflixNightPunchCard400.jpg

I’m not sure an explanation is needed here… and my husband has already asked for another one of these this year.

15. A month of meals.

2014-12-07-MonthofMeals570.jpg

This gift takes a little bit of prior planning, but it is so worth it, and I have given this gift to both my parents and in-laws for Christmas several times.

To make a month’s (or a few weeks’) worth of meals, I choose meals that freeze well and then for the next few weeks that is what I make my family for dinner. As I am preparing these dinners, I just make extra… as long as I’m already cooking… and when the meal is finished, I freeze the extra portion and before I know it I have quite a collection of meals that I can take to my working parents and in-laws.

16. “I Love You” Now and Later Letters.

2014-12-07-NowandThenLetters570.jpg

Simply choose the recipient of your gift and then write them two letters about why you love them. Write one for them to read now, and then write one to be read later on a date you determine… in a year… five years… Just be sure to write “Do not open until____” on the front of the letter to be opened later!

17. Favorite Recipes Pack.

2014-12-07-Recipe570.jpg

My mom gave me these recipe cards a few years ago, and I love them! She put together a collection of recipes we grew up eating. Everything from my grandma’s cookies, to my uncle’s BBQ sauce, to her homemade rolls. They are the recipes from my childhood, and I am so happy to have them!

18. A Personalized Screen Saver.

2014-12-07-screensaver570.jpg

One year my husband made me some personalized screen savers and snuck them onto my computer. Then every time they popped up on my computer it reminded me of him. Nerdy? Yes. Completely! But I LOVED it!

19. Remember This Book.

2014-12-07-RememberWhenBook570.jpg

For our second married Christmas, I had a blank book that I filled with short written memories of things my husband and I had done. It was nothing fancy. It wasn’t scrapbooked. There are no pictures. Just short stories, inside jokes, and song lyrics. And it’s a favorite… we laugh every time we read it.

20. Time Capsule Kit.

2014-12-07-ALongTimeago400.jpg

I have made time capsules with school classes many times, but this year we are doing it with our children. What they will get is an empty box (I know it sounds like a practical joke…) with a sheet explaining what a time capsule is.

Then, on New Year’s Day, we will fill the box together, with things like predictions, favorite candy wrappers, newspaper clippings, photos, notes, and whatever else the kids want to include. When it is filled, we will wrap it in duct tape and write on the outside the date it can be opened again.

Tune in Sunday, October 12, at 11 a.m. ET/PT. You can also join our worldwide simulcast at Oprah.com/supersoulsunday or Facebook.com/supersoulsunday.

After going through a devastating divorce, author Elizabeth Gilbert took a journey of self-discovery that led her to Italy, India and Bali. In Bali, she met a Brazilian-born man she called Felipe in her best-seller Eat, Pray, Love. Jose (Felipe’s real name) and Elizabeth eventually married, a journey she chronicled in her book Committed.

Through it all, Elizabeth says, she’s learned what a soul mate truly is. “People think a soul mate is your perfect fit, and that’s what everyone wants,” she writes in Eat, Pray, Love. “But a true soul mate is a mirror, the person who shows you everything that’s holding you back, the person who brings you to your own attention.”

Still, you might not always want to marry that person. In the video above, Elizabeth explains why and reflects on her current marriage.

Internet ads stalk young consumers everywhere in the horror movie parody from UCB Comedy’s Pocketwatch. But the group’s riff on omnipresent sidebar marketing is actually kind of scary, too.

Maybe next time you’ll think twice about scanning the Internet for deals on heels and blowup dolls, hmm?

Paparazzi Down: George Clooney’s Anti-Paparazzi Laws Just Might Save Civilization

On Sex and the City, Carrie Bradshaw cheekily declared, “Clooney is like a Chanel suit: He’ll always be in style.” The doyenne of cosmopolitans and everything fabulous was right: The Monuments Men actor can do no wrong — at least in the looks department. But did he make a fashion faux pas when he persuaded the mayor of Laglio, Italy, to draft anti-paparazzi laws just in time for his nuptials to fiancée Amal Alamuddin?

Sarah Jessica Parker and George Clooney are two peas in an anti-paparazzi pod. In 2002 the savvy SJP stood outside a hospital with her husband, Matthew Broderick, and their newborn son for a universal photo op to devalue the images taken by the paparazzi of little James Wilkie Broderick.

The ageless Clooney, who owns a villa in Laglio, on Lake Como, has used a different tactic to ward off intrusive photographers when his betrothed, a barrister specializing in international law, walks down the aisle later this summer in Italy.

The Oscar-winning actor, director, and screenwriter secured two new protection orders that prevent paparazzi from getting close to his residence ahead of his planned wedding to human-rights advocate Alamuddin. The edicts prohibit anyone from stopping on both the road outside his villa and the water directly in front of his majestic mansion, 24 hours a day. The restrictions will remain in place until Sept. 30.

George Clooney obtained these anti-paparazzi laws in the same country where freelance photojournalists were once immortalized in Federico Fellini’s internationally popular film La Dolce Vita. Do not be under any illusion that the glamorous paparazzi of the 1960s exist today. A select subset of lensmen admit that the profession has changed dramatically in the past five years, with more aggressive, untrained photographers dedicated to pursuing the stars without regard to safety, security, or privacy.

While a picture may be worth a thousand words, they are not always the right ones. Some shutterbugs contend that they are part of a legitimate newsgathering force whose activities will be swept up by laws that limit their access to public figures. The inherent problem with this argument is that the paparazzi commit serious crimes in the pursuit of so-called newsgathering, including trespassing, assault, and false imprisonment, which happens when a person or the vehicle they are driving is being prevented from freedom of movement.

Though I vehemently disagree with Kanye West’s recent characterization of being followed by paparazzi as akin to being the victim of sexual assault, First Amendment jurisprudence will not legitimize inappropriate conduct by the paps in the name of news reporting.

Moreover, the notion that the paparazzi have a symbiotic, not parasitic, relationship with VIPs is offensive to most people’s intelligence. Granted, some D-list celebs cultivate alliances with the paparazzi for press and money, but do you think actress Lupita Nyong’o, musician Blake Shelton, model Gisele Bündchen, or tennis pro Serena Williams would not be in high demand but for the generosity of the paparazzi? The entertainment industry needs the paparazzi like charities need Bernie Madoff.

My predilection for keeping the sanctity of stars’ privacy is based on the idea that actors, artists, musicians, and media personalities should not have to give up their privacy rights to engage in the vocation they love, and one that keeps many of us endlessly entertained.

The gripe I have with the paparazzi is unrelated to my soft spot for uber-wealthy celebs who just want to live “normal lives.” Most of us can agree that the anonymity ship has sailed for those who have a follicle full of talent.

I simply fail to see the significance of chasing down those in the public eye for the sake of taking a picture of a high-profile ingenue leaving a store on Melrose or a lauded director playing soccer with his kids. If the paparazzi exist to alert us when Kim Kardashian passes through LAX, we are indeed a troubled civilization that can only be saved with the passage of meaningful anti-paparazzi laws that have killer whale teeth.

Kim Kardashian, Kanye West Might Marry In Italy, According To Latest Rumor

The countdown to Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s wedding date is underway, which means more sources are coming out of the woodwork offering information on the big day.

At this point, it’s commonly believed that the couple is planning to tie the knot in Paris on May 24, unless you believe “Entertainment Tonight’s” source who says the wedding will actually take place in Florence, Italy.

michelangelo david florence italy

Florence, huh? The next thing you’ll hear is that Kimye is planning on saying “I do” in front of Michelangelo’s David, right? (We’re not saying that’s happening for those of you who don’t understand sarcasm.) Well, according to “ET’s” source, Kimye’s guests can expect a pre-wedding dinner in Paris, but then the couple will fly their guests in private planes to Florence to the actual wedding ceremony, because they obviously want to bring new meaning to the term “destination wedding.”

With just nine days to go until their nuptials, you can be sure there will be many more wedding reports and rumors, and yes, it’s going to be exhausting.

Miserable Men Shopping Might Be The Saddest Thing On Instagram

It’s no secret that many men hate shopping. But if you had any doubt, just swing by your closest mall and take a look: Dozens of men, as far as the eye can see, slumped on couches and benches, surrounded by shopping bags, just… waiting. Looking miserable.

Misery finds company on Instagram with the account miserable_men. Photo after photo of anguished, abandoned dudes out shopping, from the grandpa falling asleep in the mall to the dad waiting outside in the heat with the stroller, will probably make you chuckle a little… and perhaps inspire some sympathy.

To all the men out there still recovering from the misery of Christmas shopping, know that you’re not alone.

15 Things You Might Not Know About ‘The Colbert Report’

As part of the 2013 New York Comedy Festival, Stephen Colbert and 17 members of his writing and production staff offered a rare look behind the scenes of “The Colbert Report.” Here are 15 things we learned.

1. They’ve done over 1,200 episodes. And it’s a grueling process.

“We’re all going to die young,” Colbert joked after hearing co-Executive Producer Rich Dahm say they’ve done 1,273 shows as of that night (1,267 according to Wikipedia). And, after hearing Colbert and his staff walk through a day in the life of a “Report” writer, one can imagine why. Each writer begins his or her day by “cramming” the news for topical content and, after a series of pitch meetings, teams up with another writer to write scripts for the day’s selected ideas in just a couple of hours.

Colbert said he has to hear or say the writers’ pitches out loud because, “What’s funny on paper isn’t always funny in your mouth” (and yeah, the audience chuckled at that one).

“It’s like having to pee,” and “Feels like writing a term paper,” are a few of the ways the writers summed up the tight writing deadlines. After finishing scripts, the writers only have one hour to go over the entire half-hour episode in a “small, red, poorly ventilated room” with a ticking clock that “feels like a beating heart.”

The writers reminisced about how they used to do “The Word” on every show, often times writing it in the rewrite meeting at 3:00, right before air. “It was no way to live,” Colbert joked.

There was a consensus among the staff that despite the taxing schedule, having to “do it all again” the next day is more of a comfort than a curse. Even if they’re not happy with how an episode turned out, “There’s always another Kleenex in the box.”

2. The writers are predominantly white men. And Colbert doesn’t know why.

As each of Colbert’s writers took their seat on stage, it was hard to ignore the, as one audience member put it, “common denominator” among them. Colbert joked, “What, that we’re white? No, actually, some of us are Jewish.” But with the exception of Sam Kim and Meredith Scardino (the latter of whom received as much applause as Colbert upon taking the stage) the panel was a sea of white, male faces.

“I don’t know why that is. I don’t say ‘Bring me men,'” Colbert joked, adding that he doesn’t look at the name on writing packets so he won’t consider anything other than the writing when looking to hire someone.

3. Writing for Colbert (The Character) is “Like driving a truck backwards down the highway.”

Head writer Opus Moreschi said his job is to “Sit in a room full of incredibly talented, funny people and make sure they don’t have too much fun.” That said, jokes that make the room laugh aren’t used unless they fit Colbert The Character’s point of view, which is usually the inverse of what Colbert (or any logical person) feels. The writers’ main focus is the backwards emotional response Colbert The Character has to a news story. “Facts are not important,” Colbert said. Media figures and politicians are seen as “Good guys” and “Bad Guys” to him (“Are you helping America or are you part of the problem?”) and consistency of character is key. “You can’t break your own rules,” Colbert said.

Colbert The Character wants you to see the world in the ridiculous way that he does. It’s like he’s presenting a philosophical argument to the audience each and every night. So, how do they choose what does and doesn’t belong on the show? Anything fits as long as it’s important to Colbert The Character, which is why they’ve been able to do so many varied things like sponsor an Olympic speedskating team and run a political campaign. “Did I laugh? Then I don’t really care if you laugh,” Colbert said.

Although no topic is off limits, the writers have one rule: never punch down. Colbert “is really interested in high status people and low status people, and the dynamics between them,” writer Rob Dubbin explained, so one thing that doesn’t work is when the “victim” is the punchline.

4. He agrees with his character about 13.4 percent of the time.

One of the night’s best questions came from a 13-year-old (he had his mom step up to ask it) and it was, “What percentage of your character is actually you?”

“I sometimes agree with my character, and it’s really important that you don’t know when that is,” Colbert answered. “So I don’t know… 13.4 percent?”

But the more interesting answer came from Colbert’s reaction to a study done at the University of Ohio that asked liberals and conservatives with which political party they think Colbert identifies. He was amused when the conservative fans suggested he is actually a, “Conservative playing a liberal playing a conservative.”

“I’m happy with that answer,” Colbert said.

5. Satirizing the news everyday is cathartic, but can also be super depressing.

While they do not have a political axe to grind, the writers’ emotional reactions to politics does fuel a lot of the humor. On one hand they have the perfect outlet for their honest, visceral reactions toward politicians and media figures, but on the other, it’s hard to be angry all the time. One writer even had to leave the show because mocking the news had become too depressing for him. For Colbert, however, it’s actually very cathartic.

“It’s a release for me to dance while the world burns,” Colbert joked.

6. He’s not here to change minds.

How much does Colbert think about how he influences the young people who get all their news from he and Jon Stewart? As he demonstrated physically on stage, a big, ol’ donut. Zero. A.K.A., not at all.

“I’m not here to change minds. I’m here to confuse you in an amusing way,” Colbert said, going on to mock the idea that they’d put influence over comedy: “Hey, you know what, this script wasn’t funny, but I think it’s going to influence some voters. Good job, guys. We do work for Influence Central.”

7. They have to do about four ‘Intrusive Sponsorships’ per year, but they do it like no one else.

The way Colbert and his writers handle product placement on the show is all their own. “We want to hug the bear,” Colbert joked, referring to the glorious Wheat Thins “Sponsortunity” segment that was so much more than a simple “Brought to you by” credit (which is all the network requests). His decision to read the company’s ridiculous memo aloud on the air and blow the entire thing so hilariously out of proportion not only served the purpose of comedy, but even won the cracker brand a marketing award (yes, they loved it).

8. “Jimmy” is a real person.

When Colbert asks “Jimmy” to roll that clip, he’s referring to his real-life director Jim Hoskinson.

9. The guests in Colbert’s field segments “Have no idea what’s going on.”

Despite the fact that a staff member sends each guest featured in segments such as, “Better Know A District,” all the information they need including videos of previous interviews, they tend to take themselves so seriously that they don’t see the interview as comedy. Colbert admits, “I’m not Borat,” in that the interviewees know (or should know) what they are getting into when they meet him, but they often forget because they simply aren’t self-aware enough to see themselves as the subject of a joke. Not to mention, speaking with Colbert The Character is a bit of a whirlwind experience that often leaves the guest unaware of what just happened. Long story short, “The Colbert Report” has never had to rely on editing tricks to make people look stupid.

10. Colbert’s favorite recurring segment is…

“Cheating Death with Dr. Stephen T. Colbert, D.F.A.”

But, his favorite joke that didn’t make it to air was inspired by the infamous Daft Punk mishap. Before they canceled their appearance, the group had said they would appear on the show but not perform or speak. Colbert wrote a bit for he and the group’s manager to do where he’d ask how he knew it was really Daft Punk under the helmets if they wouldn’t perform. The manager would have said, “If it wasn’t Daft Punk, they’d be doing the show.”

One more joke that never made it to air: Head writer Opus thought Paul Ryan looked a lot like “that guy from the game Guess Who?” I’m not sure if he meant George or Bernard, but it’s a funny visual either way (R.I.P. 2012 election jokes).

11. Colbert has some very young fans (and does a great Henry Kissinger impression for them).

Another young fan, a 12-year-old, asked what has been the craziest segment they’ve ever done. Right away, Colbert cited the “Guitarmageddon” episode in which he faced off with The Decemberists’ Chris Funk in a guitar solo competition judged by Henry Kissinger and Eliot Spitzer. We’re not sure if the child asking the question even knows who Henry Kissinger is, but he seemed to enjoy Colbert’s impression of the former Secretary Of State rehearsing a joke that he wouldn’t say on air: “Where are my pancakes? I was promised pancakes.”

12. The record number of people under Colbert’s desk is…

About four. That doesn’t count, however, writers who have had to sit under the desk with live animals or buckets of chicken. There are trap doors underneath the desk that allow for so much stowing away.

13. The best part of the Maurice Sendak interview was actually a phone call before it was shot.

Colbert and the staff agreed that their 2012 interview with Maurice Sendak was one of the most memorable, in part because he was the only person who could really get Colbert The Character’s goat. But the highlight of their conversation might have occurred during a phone call before they shot the segment. At the beginning of the call, Sendak was fiddling with the phone, saying he couldn’t figure out which button to press, as Colbert patiently waited on the line. When Colbert told him “No rush,” Sendak simply replied: “I’m 83 years old. Death looms.”

“I think that might be the greatest phone call I’ve ever had in my life,” Colbert said. “I hope the interview that we did was as good as the 20 minutes I had with him over the phone, because I got off the phone and I said, I think that’s what humans are like… He really just didn’t care what people thought of him.”

14. He still takes cues from his old pal Amy Sedaris.

Have you ever noticed how Colbert doesn’t seem to know how to operate a calculator? That bit of physical humor stems all the way back from the pilot episode of “Strangers With Candy.” It was Amy’s idea to have Colbert smash the keys with his knuckles and he still does it to this day. He admitted that he likes to keep “Strangers” close to his heart, with his old co-star Paul Dinello currently serving on his writing staff.

15. The secret to getting a job as a writer on “The Colbert Report” is…

Write well. There is no other way.
