Miley Cyrus Models in Marc Jacobs Fall 2020 Runway Show

Miley Cyrus has made her New York Fashion Week fall 2020 debut.
The singer joined a host of other models for Marc Jacobs’ fall collection, which closed out New York Fashion Week. Cyrus modeled a black bra-like top with matching trousers and was holding a zebra-print coat.

This isn’t Cyrus and Jacobs’ first time working together. The singer teamed with Jacobs in 2013 for a charitable T-shirt which showed the slogan “Protect the Skin You’re In” inscribed on top of a nude Cyrus.  She later starred in the designer’s spring 2014 campaign photographed by David Sims. Last year, the duo teamed again to support Planned Parenthood, designing a pink hoodie that read “Don’t F—k With My Freedom.”
Cyrus also wore a look from Jacobs’ fall 2013 collection to the Met Gala that year, which celebrated its “Punk: Chaos to Couture” exhibit.

LeBron James Models First Unknwn Collection

Unknwn has tapped one of its high-profile owners to model looks from its first private-label collection.
NBA star LeBron James, who cofounded the store with Jason Kanfer and Frankie Walker Jr. in 2011, is shown sporting looks from the Unknwn Collection, which will be sold at the company’s stores in Aventura and Wynwood in Florida starting Friday.
The 14-piece collection titled “Collection 001” is comprised of sport and contemporary pieces such as T-shirts for $ 185, flannel shirts, hoodies, cropped pants, and a light knitted tweed “shacket,” as well as tour jackets that retail for $ 250 and $ 325. The white hoodie that has a mesh side panel and shacket has a treaded construction. Flannel shirts also sport mesh detail along the sleeve and quilted linings, the cropped pants have a nylon waist and there are canvas suede collars on the tour jackets.
Unknwn Collection complements the retailer’s “Hotel” and “Sport” offerings, as well as the Unknwn x Thom Browne capsule collection that launched on Dec. 15.
Unknwn carries brands such as Nike, Maison Margiela, Stone Island, Greg Lauren and Pleasures among others. The trio opened the second Unknwn location in Wynwood in December and celebrated the opening with collaborations with Bape, New Era, BornxRaised, Chinatown

NEW YORK — Victoria’s Secret is continuing its efforts to be more inclusive. 
Starting this month, Victoria’s Secret is collaborating with British designer Emily Bendell. See-through bras, lacy panties, bodysuits with sharp geometric lines and garter belts in shades of crimson, black and white can be found at victoriassecret.com and in seven select stores in the U.S. and U.K. as part of the Bluebella collection, Bendell’s brand. 
The collection has a twist — that’s because it fulfills parent company L Brands Inc.’s promise to update its marketing strategy. Transgender model and actress May Simón Lifschitz and plus-size model Ali Tate Cutler, along with Olivia Sang and Laura Rakhman-Kidd, can be seen in advertisements for the collection on the company’s web site and on images inside and outside of the stores carrying the line. These include New York’s flagship along Fifth Avenue and London’s Bond Street store. 
“It has been wonderful working with Emily and the entire Bluebella team on the campaign,” said a Victoria’s Secret spokesperson. “We are excited to feature these amazing models in bringing this collaboration to life.” 
The spokesperson would not comment on whether the models would be used for other Victoria’s Secret campaigns or events.

New Agency — State — Aims to Showcase Models’ Personalities

Rene Gonzalez, a seasoned model agent who spent years working between Wilhelmina and IMG, wanted to create a modeling agency that catered to a new generation of models in a changing industry, one in which a model’s personality — and social media following — has become more important than ever.
On Sept. 9, Gonzalez will launch State, a full-service New York-based agency that aims to not only rep models, but also to create role models. “We’re calling ourselves digital managers,” he said. “What we would like to do is let kids know that yes, you can be a model, and yes, it can be glamorous, but there are other things behind it.”
State will support its clients’ images but also their talents and interests with a focus on social and digital content. In terms of what he is looking for in new talent, Gonzalez cited diversity and depth. “We really want models that have something to say,” he said. “When we do interviews, we ask what they’re doing in school. We’re about building who you are. The criteria is open for us; it’s about what makes you interesting to a larger audience.”
The agency represents about 30 models. Among them is Arizona native

The conversation surrounding plus-size models has been going at a mile a minute as of late—think Melissa McCarthy’s comments about getting plus-size clothing displayed in stores more prominently and top models like Amber Tolliver saying “clothing options shouldn’t be different for curvy women.” Yet until very recently, it’s been all about women. Most agencies include divisions specially for the category and are supporting an industry that’s beginning to cast curvy beauties in mainstream campaigns. While it certainly all seems like progress, there’s an interesting catch: just where are all the male plus-size models?

The answer would appear to be Germany! It’s where there are multiple agencies with special categories (and the majority of the men are busy working).

“The market seems to be different in Germany,” Curve Model Management owner Mona Schulze told The Guardian. “Customers want to be able to identify with the models, they want them to mirror them.”

Men need to be around a size 42 to be considered plus, though that’s not a term that the agency endorses. Schulze says she scouts a lot on the street since men aren’t as likely as women to pop in for consideration; when she sees a guy with potential, she uses terms like “standard” and “everyman” to discuss his build.

A check of the top agencies in the United States doesn’t reveal any plus-size category for men. Fitness categories include males who are beefier than runway models but still appear super in shape. Jermain Hollman, 6’5 with a 36-inch waist, is considered plus-size but, hello—he’s got some serious abs going on in his Facebook profile pic. Thirty-two inches is the average waist size for working male models, and while those in the biz say they haven’t seen things in the past, there’s hope that the positive attention being shined on women’s plus-size divisions will affect men as well.

This Is How Many Plus-Size Models Appear In September Issue Fashion Editorials

Sometimes it seems as though the fashion industry is more inclusive than ever before. In the past year, there’s been an increase in the number of mature models fronting ad campaigns and more people with disabilities on the runways of New York Fashion Week. Right now, eight black women are featured on September magazine covers

But there are definitely major strides to be made

We flipped through the September issue fashion editorials of seven major magazines — Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, W, Elle, Marie Claire, InStyle and Cosmopolitan — to see if we could find any plus-size models. 

The results weren’t great.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the average waist size for women aged 20 and over is 37.5 inches. Depending on which retail store you consult, this translates to a slightly different pant size, but all of them qualify as plus-size. (At Gap, a 37.5 inch waist is between a size 18 and a size 20, at Coldwater Creek it translates to roughly a size 16. At Lane Bryant, it’s about a size 18.) 

So, if the average woman is plus-size, why are there zero plus-size models in these fashion editorials?

Yeah, we’re not really sure either.

The text is driven by three motives: the ubiquity of computers in modern control and signal-processing equipment means that sampling of systems that really evolve continuously is unavoidable; although superficially straightforward, sampling can easily produce erroneous results when not treated properly; and the need for a thorough understanding of many aspects of sampling among researchers and engineers dealing with applications to which they are central. The authors tackle many misconceptions which, although appearing reasonable at first sight, are in fact either partially or completely erroneous. They also deal with linear and nonlinear, deterministic and stochastic cases. The impact of the ideas presented on several standard problems in signals and systems is illustrated using a number of applications. Academic researchers and graduate students in systems, control and signal processing will find the ideas presented in Sampled-data Models for Linear and Nonlinear Systems to be a useful manual for dealing with sampled-data systems, clearing away mistaken ideas and bringing the subject thoroughly up to date. Researchers in statistics and economics will also derive benefit from the reworking of ideas relating a model derived from data sampling to an original continuous system.

Exclusive: This Documentary on Plus-Size Models Will Change the Way You Think About Your Body

Plus-size fashion is having more than a moment, it’s on the brink of a revolution—and models are taking on a leading role.

From Ashley Graham‘s Sports Illustrated ad to Candice Huffine‘s Pirelli Calendar slot, the community has been on the fashion industry’s lips all year. In the midst of such pronounced media attention, producer and former model Jessica Lewis is getting ready to debut Straight/Curve, a documentary that delves into the world of plus-size modeling.

“This generation of models is ready to usher in a new definition of beauty—one that is all inclusive and supports positive body ideals and self acceptance,” said Lewis, who has spent over 15 years as a straight-size and plus-size model. “The fashion industry needs to be reflective and representative of the diversity that exists in present day society.”

Straight/Curve, set to release next summer, aims to examine and redefine the beauty standards put forth by the fashion industry, as they relate to the plus-size fashion. Most importantly, it will be talking about issues often pushed aside. Multiple people will be speaking about sample sizes and how adding a size 14 into circulation will help get diversely sized models in magazines. Agents will be talking about their move towards eliminating plus-size boards and placing all models together. Models will be talking about making plus-size inclusion a non-event in the media.

The film is the most insider look at the industry so far, going behind the scenes of New York’s plus-size fashion industry, with a focus on top models, agents, clients, and photographers. The trailer is already loaded with power players, but there are some top models being kept a surprise… So far, we know it will follow industry influencers, including Kate Dillon, Sophie T. Simmons, and Jennie Runk, among others (including this Glamour writer!).

Overall, Straight/Curve aims to expose the complex relationship between the fashion industry, mainstream media, and body image in society. “When, how, and why did size zero become the norm when two thirds of women are considered ‘plus-size’ sitting between a size 10 to 14?” Director Jenny McQuaile told Glamour. “Our documentary will examine this question. There’s always been a complex relationship between the fashion industry, the media, and body image and we’re finally making a film that will investigate that.”

Plus-Size Models on What They’re Tired of Hearing and Where the Conversation Should Go

Are we talking about plus-size fashion in a productive way or are we stuck in a rut?

Before you think, “But plus-size fashion and its models have been getting lots of press lately,” consider this: Many of the industry’s top models insist that we have a long way to go to change the perception of what plus-size fashion is really about. Over and over, these models get asked the same tired questions. (Ahem: What do you think of the term plus-size?)

If we want to see the conversation surrounding plus-size fashion evolve and grow beyond a single facet, we have to stop asking its models the narrow questions. Model Felicity Hayward points out, “The more people keep asking those questions, the less we’re going to be able to be equal.”

So, we asked 12 top models about what they’re tired of being asked in interviews and how we can break out of the stunted cycle we’re in with regard to plus-size modeling and fashion. Take a look:

What are the challenges of perception that you face?

Denise Bidot: [I get asked if] I care if people call me plus-size…I don’t have any problem with you calling me plus-size, curvy, voluptuous, big—I don’t really give a damn. We represent plus-size women, whether or not some of the models are smaller or larger.

Amber Tolliver: The question of should a plus-size or curvy woman be wearing certain things is infuriating. When it comes to straight-size fashion, any and all styles are fair game. Clothing options shouldn’t be different for curvy women. They should be given options and not told they can’t wear something before it’s even designed.

Bree Warren: People will ask if it’s my full-time job. What a lot of people don’t understand is that there are a lot of working models that have done, and will continue to do, very well. They don’t really understand that plus-size models work a lot.

Georgina Burke: [I get asked] how I stay in shape. It’s almost like they’re asking, “Do you actually work out?” There’s a big thing right now with all the plus-size girls showing that they’re working out and I feel like all of the interviews are saying, “Oh you don’t just sit around and eat burgers, you actually exercise?”

Marquita Pring: [I get asked if] I ever considered being “skinny” or if I have wanted to go to the straight-size world. As if the way I am is unattractive or it’s not as good as being a skinny girl, therefore, shouldn’t I want to be just like them? Never once in my career was that an option for me—not even at 15-years-old when I started—and I have never been interested in being smaller.

Felicity Hayward: [People] asking if we’ve had any negativity regarding being plus-size. People assume that because I’m bigger, I have experienced people asking me to lose weight or if I’ve worked with people that are horrible to me because I’m bigger…. The more people keep asking those questions, the less we’re going to be able to be equal.

Now, hear what they say on where the conversation surrounding plus-size fashion and modeling needs to go:

Georgia Pratt: It’s great when we can be included in conversations and questions that go beyond positive body image. The conversation needs to start opening up and approaching people such as designers, editors, photographers and other creative decision makers and influencers of the fashion industry.

Jennie Runk: It’s really important to get a message out to young girls and kids. They need to know that not only do we have Photoshop working in our favor, we have a professional hairstylist, makeup artist, and photographer…. The picture that these kids end up seeing looks—in no way—what we actually look like.

Justine Legault: At this point, I’m trying to have people get to know me as a person— that’s where I’m at in my career. [For instance], what would I recommend or say to women or young girls?

Julie Henderson: We should be focusing on how people feel when they look at us. Not “She’s too skinny or she’s too big or she’s plus-size or she’s black or she’s white.” People should say, “This is a beautiful woman. I recognize myself in her.”

Gia Genevieve: Plus-size models should also be shown in a glamorous way. I don’t see a lot of plus-size models being shown in a very sexy way, and we are very sexy. [What] I’m pushing for is that there needs to be more glamour in plus-size modeling—and less toned-down, commercial [shots].

Emme: For 20 years I’ve been wondering, How do we get the department stores to get [contemporary clothes] to size 18? They could really make much more money if they would buy more fashionable things in the size category of 12’s, 14’s, and 16’s. [I work with] the junior class at Syracuse University’s Fashion Design program to create clothing on size 2, 4, 6 forms and in the same class on 16, 18, 22 forms. We’re teaching student designers to design for all!

Models Of All Sizes Strip Down In The Name Of Body Diversity In Icelandic Glamour

The ladies of ALDA, a coalition of plus-size models whose name translates to “wave” in Icelandic, are making a real splash in Icelandic Glamour.

Ashley Graham, Marquita Pring, Julie Henderson, Inga Eiriksdottir and Danielle Redman are the five women hoping to change the perception of beauty in the fashion industry through ALDA. They’re currently being celebrated in an eight-page spread in the second-ever issue of Iceland’s edition of Glamour magazine, each looking downright gorgeous wearing looks from denim to birthday suit.

“It was so much fun! The naked shot happened by accident,” Henderson told The Huffington Post. “We were waiting for Ashley to get there and started fooling around! It is so amazing when all of us get together. We can go weeks without seeing one another, so when we do it makes us all so happy. There is a special magic and chemistry when we are all on set together.”

But there’s way more to love about these ladies than their good looks. The group, which came together after its members’ former modeling agency dissolved its plus-size division, has an important message of empowerment and self-love to share. Eiriksdottir explained their mission to Glamour, then provided a translation from print to HuffPost:

Even if it might sound strange since we [are models], which is a lot about the outside looks, we are more interested in building strong self-esteem in women rather then just focusing on the looks. … In the last few years, we have organized various events that are about getting women together to do healthy things for the body and soul, while raising money for those in need and giving back. … We started working with “Girl Up,” which is a United Nations [Foundation campaign]. The focus is to empower young girls to become leaders and raise money for girls in need around the world.

There’s certainly a long way to go on the road to a more inclusive industry, but these women sure are paving the way.

How One Designer Is Using ‘Role Models Not Runway Models’ To Empower Women

While New York Fashion Week featured many famous faces during its opening night on Feb. 12, it was the lesser-known ones that may have made the biggest impact.

Designer Carrie Hammer’s runway show “Role Models Not Runway Models” was a highlight of NYFW for the second year in a row. “Role Models Not Runway Models” featured female CEOs, writers, actresses and entrepreneurs.

“I think it’s important that women understand that beauty comes from power, personality, and accomplishments,” Hammer said. “The women we put on the runway are all at the top of their respective fields.”

The models included Brandthropologie CEO Billee Howard, Nexus founder Rachel Cohen Gerrol, senior editor of Bustle.com Marie Ospina and Director of Public Affairs at Coca-Cola Missy Owens.

In 2014, Hammer’s show featured the first model in a wheelchair in NYFW and this year she included “American Horror Story” actress Jamie Brewer, the first model with Down syndrome to walk the runway.

“I think this challenges what we’ve been seeing for way too long. Uniformity. It’s time to see not just diversity — but reality,” Hammer said.

Pin-Ups for Vets Documentary Models Glam It Up While Raising Funds for Their Fellow Veterans

Veterans Day is a time to remember the past as well as the ongoing courage and sacrifice of our enlisted men and women. It’s also a time to pitch in and help. An inspired woman, lovely Gina Elise, and her team are releasing a documentary, Pin-Ups for Vets, that honors them all. Produced by TV4 Entertainment and created by southern California-based Elise, the documentary, which will start airing on YouTube’s All Warrior Network (November 11), is an adjunct to Elise’s very tasteful but sexy annual Pin-Ups for Vets Calendar whose proceeds go to benefit hospitalized veterans.

Having been published since 2007, the 2015 calendar features for the first time 12 veterans including nine female veterans and three male veterans. The female pin-up models were photographed in classic 1940s pin-up style surrounded by retro airplanes and automobiles. The photos, taken by April Smith, brilliantly recapture the authentic feel of the original WWII pin-up depictions, which were painted on planes or hung up as pictures in barracks, and which reminded our troops of what they were fighting for back home.

The new documentary captures the behind-the-scenes action of the 2015 calendar Pin-Ups for Vets shoot, and Elise explains, “One of the veterans, Shannon Stacy, was a Naval Flight surgeon and is now an ER doctor! Jovane Henry was a model in Japan for two years before joining the Marine Corps. They are all very inspirational individuals, and by asking them to be models is a great way to start telling their amazing stories. They are superheroes to me! I want the rest of America to learn about our Vets, generally, how resilient they are, and be inspired by them!”

Elise’s inspiration began in 2006 when she heard stories about severely wounded service members returning from their deployments in Iraq but finding many healthcare programs overcrowded or underfunded. She continues,

There was also a large number of aging Veterans from past wars that were entering the hospitals to add to the patient load. I wanted to do something to honor my grandfather’s Army service during WWII, and I had always loved the beautiful nose art on the WWII military planes that depicted beautiful women. I took my love of that art form to produce the first pin-up fundraiser calendar that we sold in 2007, hoping to purchase equipment for the VA hospitals. Equipment always gets worn out and we thought this was the best way to spend our funds — to buy brand new rehabilitation equipment for our veterans.

Determined Elise and her team have produced nine calendars, and visited over 6,000 ill and injured vets at their bedsides in 48 Veteran facilities nationwide and in Germany. In the process, they have donated over $ 50,000 dollars worth of new equipment for VA and Military hospitals nationwide.

USMC veteran Jovane Henry, explains her own reason for getting involved:

I was aware that pin-ups have been a mainstay in military culture since WWII. I’d been a model professionally in Tokyo but I’d never done pin-up style posing. Contrary to popular belief, the posing was not overtly sexual by any means. I felt a sense of pride that I was joining a genre of women who had boosted the morale of troops and encouraged them to remember what they were fighting for back home. As a woman veteran, I felt beautiful and empowered in my feminine energy — which isn’t exactly encouraged in a military environment. And as a veteran, it was even more rewarding. There are so many ways to serve the community, and this calendar was just one way for me to give back. The look on the wounded warriors’ faces that we visit is already great, but when they learn that I’m a veteran and we have that instant connection, it’s even better. I am still motivating and supporting my fellow troops, just with red lipstick and without the combat boots!

In many ways, Shannon Stacy and Jovane Henry and the other terrific Pin-Ups for Vets models — who ranged from Navy Seabee to combat Correspondent and Flight Surgeon — honor the past contributions of Betty Grable, Rita Hayworth, Jane Russell and Gene Tierney to the military cause. But they also honor our continuing fascination with the 1940s and 1950s. Elise adds, “Retro style is incredibly flattering to the female figure, it accentuates all the best places. Milky PinUps: AurumLight Studio Splashes Milk On Models, We Begin Search For Cookies (PHOTOS)

We’ll never cry over spilt milk again.

AurumLight Studio, a London-based conceptual photography business, is making a splash with its fresh take on old pin-up photos. Pouring milk on models sounds easy — but photographer Jaroslav Wieczorkiewicz captures the liquid in such a way that it looks like a perfectly crafted dress.

Plenty of his galleries are more serious in nature, but the former architect thought he’d have some fun with these ladies, who he’s putting in a calendar — thankfully — coming soon.

“This time I thought it will be cool to approach the liquid theme in a more relaxed and funny way,” Wieczorkiewicz writes on his blog. “So we threw some colors into the mix and came up with a personal Milky PinUp tribute to my favorite pin-up style artists.”
