Kendall, Bella and Gabrielle Union all stepped out with 10% of their ponytails flying freely in front of their faces this week. Jenner and Union are so serious about the trend that they both wore it proudly in front of the President to the White House Correspondant’s Dinner, while Bella paired it with a Kim K-esque latex dress following the Met Gala. But the tendril doesn’t get to have it’s own time in the spotlight. Stars are also embracing their baby hairs. We know, finding a rogue hair on the hairline of Kim Kardashian is impossible, but Kylie is proudly flaunting her tiny strands in the most major way — on the cover of a magazine.

Jenner covered Glamour UK’s June issue looking fresh-faced and pouty — but it’s not her plumped lips, yellow eyeshadow, or bold blue coat that immediately caught our eyes. It was the unlikely sighting of all of her baby hairs, combed down onto her forehead. And she’s not the only one.

Minka Kelly, Vanessa Hudgens and Nicole Richie are all feeling the look as well. In fact, Richie named her baby hairs “J Lo’s” in an Instagram post, writing, “Brushed my teeth, washed my face, & brushed down my JLOs. Night night bbs.” And Hudgens also credited the singer as her inspiration, writing “These baby hairs are giving me major J-Lo vibes.”

Searching for More Happiness?

In all the years I’ve been coaching, there’s been and continues to be one strong theme that exists with almost every client. That is, their desire to become happier. Here, in the UK some believe that happiness is about having a curry and beer on a Friday evening. Okay, not everyone is of this opinion, but many Brits are. I too would like to be happier. That’s not to say I’m unhappy. Far from it, I take great pleasure in my work, my marriage and my desire to improve myself. In saying that, a little more happiness would not go amiss.

Apart from guiding others, amongst other things, about how they can become happier, my own desires have become less apparent. What I mean is happiness is not always top of my mind. Somehow, helping others to have a better life has redirected the focus away from my desires and towards being of service. Therefore, my personal development has kind of taken a back seat. Okay, I still continue to take care of myself, eat healthily, keep fit, read avidly and research. Do those aspects of taking care of me make me happier? I don’t think so – I do think they prevent unhappiness creeping in to my consciousness.

The whole area of happiness is not totally understood by the general public. Somehow many believe that quick-fixes enable us to be happier. Research has discovered that almost every quick-fix, including miracle diets, don’t work in the long run. In saying that, it’s as if we all become addicted to the illusion that happiness is within easy reach. I’d say that happiness is in within reach, albeit not easily so. In essence, it’s to do with discovery. Yes, first we need to discover what makes us truly happy. For some, the joy of watching their children grow, for others their retirement. For me, I’m happiest when I am fulfilling my purpose.

In part, my aim is to teach, guide and clearly communicate that with the awareness of our purpose, self belief is buoyed. It also encourages us to convey our passion more authentically. In addition, it provides huge meaning to our lives. Although I don’t have the remedy for finding more happiness. Only you have that, just look deeply within to discover it. To locate your happiness button, ask yourself what sends a ripple of deep satisfaction through your being. Then, consider the times when your self esteem is at its highest. Furthermore, when did you last feel at peace, calm and without worry or stress?

The answers to these questions, will enable authentic happiness to manifest with greater ease. In short, being the Best Version of you: kind, empathetic, considerate, compassionate, optimistic and personable, etc. I was asked if having all of these qualities is ideal. Yes, it is ideal, so by just developing one of these is a great place to start. And like an addiction, you’ll become desirous of attaining more of these qualities. Remember, any actions we take in the affirmative become a part of who we are. Also, our self awareness grows stronger. And remember, the better we know ourselves the better we become at knowing who we authentically are. And happiness will follow.

Some tips:

-To discover more happiness begin by looking inside, not outside

-Spend time considering what makes you authentically happy

-Do your best to avoid spending time around negative people

-Giving to others unconditionally makes us happier

-Luck has a part in being happier, just make sure you are in when it comes calling

-Remember, material wealth is not the answer to becoming happier

-Know you have all the answers about knowing how to be happier

Art Therapy Is More Than Just Making Nice Pictures

Anyone who has ever put pen to paper, crayon to coloring book, or hand to wet clay knows the healing powers embedded in such creative endeavors. More than just a pastime, art can be an escape, a stimulus, a war cry or a tranquil reprieve.

Art therapy, defined as “a form of psychotherapy that uses art media as its primary mode of communication,” revolves around this principal of art’s immense power. Open to children and adults of any background and experience, the still-evolving field explores modes of expression, understanding and healing that occur when paint touches canvas. While too many schools today run under the assumption that art is extraneous, a diversion from traditional academic subjects, art therapists know better. They know that art has the potential to change lives, and, even to save them.

Tally Tripp is the art therapy clinic director of George Washington University, specializing in individuals who have experienced trauma. Entering the field in its nascent phase, in the 1970s, Tripp was elemental in shaping the field as we know it today. 

Continuing The Huffington Post’s coverage of the often misunderstood field that is art therapy, and the pioneers who continue to sculpt it, we reached out to Tripp to discuss the details of her career’s past and present.  

How did you become interested in art therapy? How did you learn about the field? 

When I first learned about art therapy it was definitely a field in its infancy. Personally, I have always loved art making and combined that with an interest in working with people. In high school I spent summers in New York working for the Children’s Aid Society with disadvantaged children in a camp program. It was there, as a counselor in the arts and crafts program, I came across one of the original art therapy journals: the Bulletin of Art Therapy (edited by Elinor Ulman and produced between 1961-1970).

For many years, that journal was the only art therapy publication available. At the same time, in 1971, Elinor Ulman and her colleague, psychologist Bernard Levy started an art therapy program at the George Washington University. Pretty quickly my goal became to study art therapy in the master’s program at GW, which I did between 1978 and 1981. Now, full circle, I am a full time professor in the art therapy program at GW and the director of the GW Art Therapy Clinic.

How did art therapy look when you first immersed yourself in it? 

In the late 1970s, art therapy was still an emerging profession. It was definitely an exciting time for the field as we students were taught by some of the early pioneers: Elinor Ulman, Edith Kramer and Hanna Kwiatkowska — innovative thinkers developing clinical approaches that were based largely on intuition coupled with psychoanalytic thinking that was popular at the time. Also in those days there were few texts or research studies on art therapy to guide us, so we learned primarily by our experiences and our clinical work. As art therapy was a relatively unknown profession, we all put time and effort into spreading the word and educating others about its value.

The field is more established now, and more often than not, people have heard of art therapy and have some understanding of how it works. Art therapists now have licenses in some states as well as levels of professional credentialing and board certification. Beyond that, we have a lot of art therapy literature at our fingertips including research studies supporting the efficacy of art therapy and describing how it is utilized across many settings and populations. Art therapists can now be found in various settings — from medical and psychiatric hospitals, to schools, geriatric facilities, community and studio settings, and in private practice.

What are your areas of interest in the field? 

I have maintained a private practice in art therapy for over 30 years. My specialization is working with individuals who have experienced trauma. I find these clients are excellent candidates for art therapy precisely because the art can provide a means for expressing the inexpressible feelings that are often shut down or pushed away from consciousness in response to traumatic events. It has been exciting in the last 25 years to see that neuroscience research has validated the kind of work we do. Through brain imagery, we now know that the cognitive and executive functioning of the brain is for the most part “off line” when people are recalling their traumas, rendering them essentially “speechless.” This helps explain why traditional verbal therapy is often not enough when working with trauma, and why art (imagery) and other experiential therapies are so effective.

I reached out to you in part because of Suicide Awareness Month. In your private practice do you work with many patients grappling with suicidal thoughts? What are some of the methods you practice in such circumstances? 

Any therapist in private practice will have to deal with patients who are struggling with suicidal thoughts from time to time. Negative beliefs and hopelessness can render the individual helpless to combat the urge for self-harm. To work with suicidal thoughts, a clinician must first assess how developed the plan is, and, if the patient is truly in imminent danger of self-harm, hospitalization may be required. But hospitalization has its limits and is only one step.

Beyond the immediate safety needs, I work on resourcing my patients to help them develop other coping strategies so that they can better manage their feelings and find alternate responses. Some interventions might include creating a safety plan with a hierarchy of actions to take, or to come up with a list of resources that can be quickly accessed when the suicidal impulse arises, or helping with a variety of cognitive and behavioral restructuring techniques, or perhaps increasing the frequency of therapy sessions, etc. Sometimes I will recommend a soothing art activity for “homework” such as working in an art coloring book or journal, that can assist with a person feeling grounded and safe. Art can soothe anxiety and help with re-focusing attention to something more positive and less destructive than a suicidal plan.

Are most of the patients you encounter already involved in art? Are they ever skeptical?  

It is true that most people think of going to an art therapist because they enjoy making art and are already involved in it somehow. But that is not the only kind of person who will benefit from art therapy.

For example, one man I worked with was also being seen in marriage therapy and was referred to me because it was determined that he needed to access more emotional depth. This man had no apparent interest in art, but agreed to see me as an experiment because art therapy had been recommended. I invited him to work on a picture of simply lines and shapes and just “see what happens.” His first picture, a simple downward sloping line was created in a matter of seconds. But when we held the “picture” up and explored it from a distance, he became struck by the downward motion and then exclaimed: “This is exactly what I have been trying to describe. It looks like my mother’s lap. Empty. She was never able to really hold me!” The image and description of not being held as a child became a fundamental theme in our work together. And within a few months, this patient enrolled in a painting class and began a new appreciation for art.

Can you explain what you hope to achieve with a suicidal patient through art therapy? What changes are you looking to make?

Often the artwork will convey a suicidal feeling of hopelessness or despair long before words are consciously available. The image can provide a means for discussing feelings that are either unclear or difficult to verbalize. Art works tend to be self-referential so we work actively with the images and themes that are produced.

For example, an image of a desolate landscape might signal an empty feeling and suicidal state in the artist. While I do not interpret the image, the patient and I will work together to explore the metaphor and any personal meaning or feelings that are attached. Because the picture is something we can look at together, it gives both artist and therapist an opportunity to “do” something with it. Art therapy can empower the individual to find a solution or create a “preferable ending” in the art. It is interesting to note that creating artwork that challenges the initial feelings of hopelessness will actually affect the neural firing in the brain. The more practice a person has exploring “preferable endings” for example, the more this will result in the brain finding alternatives to self-destructive behavior. So making art can be a good practice for seeking solutions and reducing negative thoughts.

Is there a certain type of patient you think is more suited to art therapy as opposed to other therapy methods? 

Anyone who is willing to explore feelings through the process of making art can benefit from art therapy. Some people will naturally be drawn to this kind of therapy — children in particular where their natural language is through art and play.

Adolescents are also good candidates for art therapy because they may be resistant to traditional talk therapies and usually will enjoy working with art materials. I work with adults, however, and maintain that they are still children inside, as it is often an adult embodying that child state coming in to my office. The art helps bypass the defense and intellectualization inherent in verbal language. When a new (adult) patient is referred to me, I often start by asking, “Why do you think art therapy will help?” Right there, I am getting an alliance with the patient by suggesting that I believe that the experiential and creative nature of making art, in the company of an attuned art therapist, will make a difference.

What makes art therapy so powerful?

Art therapy is more than just making nice pictures. In fact, art therapy is more often a process of making ugly or messy pictures that depict a feeling state, not a final product that is all neat and tied together. Art therapy is about that creative process where the client, in the company of an art therapist, is working and re working problems via a range of fluid and variable art materials.

In private practice, I find the spontaneously created art pieces are the most meaningful and often help a person find resolution for specific traumatic experiences. The benefit occurs when the art made facilitates a sense of mastery over the problem. For example, a patient who has experienced years of abuse or neglect in childhood may be able to finally express feelings that had been avoided or pushed out of conscious awareness because they were overwhelming at the time. The images often speak more loudly than words. With the encouragement of the art therapist, difficult feelings can be expressed through making art.

The process varies widely so there is no one way to describe what happens in a session. When a person first faces a blank piece of paper, there might be some resistance or hesitancy to explore feelings so the resultant images may appear tight and controlled as in a line drawing or pencil sketch. But after some trust is established in the therapeutic relationship, the art process can move towards more expressive activity, which would suggest the patient is accessing stronger emotion. Often the patient will begin experimenting with more evocative materials at that point, for example using paint or clay to express feelings like anger, shame or fear. The art therapist is knowledgeable about psychological problems and the use of various art media; the process is flexible and individually focused to support the patient to find materials and techniques that connect with the issues at hand. And as a patient becomes more open to the process and discovers more creative resources within, the art product will also change. In art therapy, there is always that creative edge that keeps the process dynamic and contributes to the process of healing.

The Colors You’ll Be Wearing Next Spring: Rose Quartz, Buttercup, and More

Sometimes the world of fashion has a bit of a crystal ball element to it—hello, we’re all talking about spring 2016 now, before we’ve even started this fall! The color pros at Pantone traditionally reside as the seers who are providing our futuristic peek, releasing reports on what colors we’ll be seeing a lot of in the future. They just wrapped up their research and have issued the official word on what’s going to be hot for spring 2016.

All colors are not created equally either. Rose Quartz is the number one shade, with 22.55% of designers using it in their spring ’16 collections. Peach Echo, Serenity, Snorkel Blue, and Buttercup round out the rest of the top five. Per the experts, this means we’re all searching for some peace.

“Serenity is a calming color that plays to the whole idea that we know we’re still living in turbulent times,” Pantone Color Institute executive director Leatrice Eiseman told WWD. “Buttercup is all about sunlight, happiness and cheer. This one just speaks to give us a ray of sunshine, something to be hopeful about.”

Eiseman is a friend of Glamour—she spent time talking color with us earlier this year, revealing the best shades to wear if you want to make new friends, feel less stressed, or win an argument (though the same colors can mean different things for men and women).

A New Survey Says Women Spend More Time Shopping Than Socializing

There’s part of shopping that’s all about necessity—we all need household basics and food to eat after all. How much time do you think you spend browsing and buying? And, perhaps more interestingly, how much time do you think you spend on it compared to time you do other things? Like, hang with your ladies for a glass of wine and a spot of gossip?

Statistic Brain Research Institute has just broken down the average day in an effort to understand what takes up the majority of our time. Not surprisingly, sleep and work claim the biggest amount of hours (for the ladies, we’re averaging 8.76 hours of sleep and 6.66 of work per day; men work a little more and sleep a little less).

The number we didn’t see coming? Women shop more than socialize, logging 1.3 hours a day versus .73 hours of hang-time (even when you add in time spent on the phone or emailing, it’s still less). It seems a little surprising, but here’s the million-dollar question: what about when you’re shopping with a friend? Does that count as socializing?

The Shocking Truth About Tinder; It’s More Than Just a Hook-Up App!

Have you heard the news? Tinder is causing a ‘Dating Apocalypse.’ That’s right, this simple dating app is causing changes in human mating and dating behavior, the likes of which we’ve never seen before… that is, if you agree with the September Vanity Fair article by Nancy Jo Sales, “Tinder and the Dawn of the ‘Dating Apocalypse.” Not convinced? Browse over to the R.I. Health Department and read their conclusion that Tinder is one cause of the nation-wide rise in STDs. That’s one powerful app, right? Could it be true? Has Tinder forever changed the way people date?

What is Tinder and Why has it become the Focus of Debate?

Tinder is a free, location-based mobile dating app that simplifies the process most dating websites require. You simply download the app to your smart phone, link to your Facebook account, choose up to six photos of yourself, and write a brief bio. That’s it!

Then the game begins. The app shows you photos of singles based on your preferences. You swipe left if you don’t like them and swipe right if you do. If someone you like also swiped right on your photo, the app immediately informs you, “It’s a Match!” and urges you to begin chatting. Beware: Tinder is addictive. But, is it just a hook-up app for the ‘hit-it-and-quit-it’ culture, or is it something more?

The Appeal

If you’ve familiar with online dating, you may wonder what the appeal is, and how you can find someone worth your time given what little information the app gives and requires. But that’s what makes Tinder great. The app is simple, easy on the eye and feels like a game. The objective? To find matches and start conversations. And when you are matched, starting conversations is easier. After all, you know your match is also interested.

Tinder is more efficient because it doesn’t require answering a long series of questions to find the best matches for you. It’s a matter of choosing whether to swipe left or right. Sounds too simple, right? Well, not exactly. The decision-making process involved in using Tinder is both rational and emotional. You’ll rationalize your swiping decision based on age, distance and a short bio (if included). But let’s be honest, it’s all about the photos. Swiping left or right depends on how attractive you find a candidate, and that’s pure emotion.

Tinder Is Only for Hook-Ups.

If you believe the hype and speak to the wrong people, you’ll be convinced that Tinder is just another hook up app. But, dismissing this app would be a mistake, and I can give you 50 million reasons in 196 countries worldwide to convince you. Yes, Tinder is popular and widespread.

Over the past few months, I’ve used Tinder Plus (premium subscription / worldwide) to “informally research” Tinder users (women and men) across a wide age-range (25-50) all over the world. And No, I did not create fake profiles.

What I found? Almost 60 percent of all women who wrote a narrative in their profile included a reference to NOT wanting a hook-up. Here are examples copied from Tinder profiles in the United States:

Not looking for a hook-up, but thanks for the thought . . . Makes me feel all warm ‘n fuzzy, LOL.

NOT HERE FOR A HOOK-UP. KEEP YOUR STDs TO YOURSELF!

So, people are aware of Tinder’s “hook-up” reputation, yet they are still willing to try the application hoping to connect with someone who is also looking for a serious relationship. Are these women hiding their true intentions about hooking-up? I think not.

Can Tinder Lead to a Long-Term Relationship?

There’s plenty of discussion about the “seriousness” of mobile dating apps. In fact, many find them superficial because of how simple they are. Perhaps this adds to the app’s allure and charm. Whatever the case, Tinder is popular and has brought online dating to the masses. People who have considered online dating desperate find it much easier to download the simple app, link to Facebook and swipe away.

Indeed, there are plenty of twenty-somethings who are on Tinder for a quick hook-up. And, if you use it, you’ll probably find a match who swiped right to convince you to hook up with them. But you’ll find just as many interesting, attractive and successful people who are only interested in a committed relationship.

Afraid of matching and chatting with a married person? Yes, unfortunately it happens on Tinder! Oh, but wait, it also happens in bars, restaurants, at speed dating events, and through matchmaking services. It happens in life!

Does Tinder make hooking-up and casual sex easier? Yes, if you’re looking for it. But it makes finding meaningful relationships easier as well. What happens after you’re matched, depends on you and your partner. Trust your instincts and make sure your partner is on the same page. If someone makes you uncomfortable, un-match them, report the issue and move on.

Today’s technology, connectivity and innovative applications make connecting with and meeting new friends easy. But at the end of the day, you’re still the one who decides who you find attractive and with whom you want to spend your time. Tinder is just a tool — a portal to connect and introduce you to others. But it’s the biggest and baddest on the playground. And if you’re in the game, don’t you want to play with the best? Tinder is simple, quick, fun and free — and everyone seems to be doing it. If you’re single and looking, keep an open mind and check it out. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Before he jumped into the presidential race and the media frenzy that comes with it, real estate mogul Donald Trump preferred to communicate with the American people via a more intimate medium — the simple written word.

The Huffington Post has reviewed nearly a dozen books by and/or about Trump, including one by John O’Donnell, a former executive in Trump’s business empire, and one by Tim O’Brien, a longtime journalist and former HuffPost editor. Reading through these works, which go back a full 25 years, one gets a better sense of the businessman’s macho persona, his taste for extravagance, his views about women and his rise to the top of the New York City social scene. Jimmy Fallon To Host ‘Tonight Show’ For Six More Years

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) — Just a few months after Jimmy Fallon marked his first anniversary as host of “The Tonight Show,” NBC has signed him for six more years.

Calling him “the best there is,” NBC entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt said Fallon, who turns 41 next month, will occupy the “Tonight” host chair until at least 2021.

Speaking to TV critics on Thursday, Greenblatt also announced that Rihanna will join “The Voice” as key adviser to the panel of judges, who will be Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Pharrell and Gwen Stefani.

He said new additions to the cast of the holiday production of “The Wiz Live!” include “Hairspray” co-star Elijah Kelley (in the role of the Scarecrow), singer-songwriter-actor Ne-Yo (as the Tin Man) and Oscar-winning songwriter and actor Common, who will play the Gatekeeper to Emerald City.

Previously announced cast members in the musical production, airing live Dec. 3, include Queen Latifah, Mary J. Blige, David Alan Grier, Uzo Aduba, Amber Riley, Stephanie Mills and Shanice Williams as Dorothy.

Greenblatt also had two words on whether Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump would ever return as host of “The Celebrity Apprentice”: “Absolutely not.”

Greenblatt said the show will not be back next season, but will return in the future with a new host. He didn’t speculate on whom that host might be, but said, “We’re obviously looking for a host who will make noise and is a big personality.”

Ballerina Misty Copeland Talks Being Unapologetically Black And More

This is an excerpt from Essence magazine’s September 2015 cover story “Stepping Up” about American Ballet Theatre ballerina Misty Copeland. The article was written by Julee Wilson, senior fashion editor at The Huffington Post. 

“…One of Copeland’s most endearing qualities, beyond dancing on her toes and making it look easy, is the fact that she’s so unapologetically Black. ‘It’s easy for someone who isn’t Black or other or who has never experienced racism to dismiss what I’m saying…it’s easier for them to say, ‘Why do you focus so much on that? You’re a beautiful dancer.’ But the reason I’m here and I have this voice is because I’m Black.’ Copeland tells me that she has never tried to pretend that ballet doesn’t have a race problem. She recounts times fellow dancers told her that some American Ballet Theatre (ABT) staff members were overheard saying, ‘Misty stands out too much because of her skin color.’ With that said, Copeland’s singular mission is changing the landscape of ballet by promoting Project Plié, an initiative launched in September 2013 by ABT with Copeland on the advisory board to increase racial and ethnic representation at ballet companies around the country. Copeland also mentors several dancers on the rise. At the moment she has more than a dozen mentees (including identical twin brothers Naazir and Shaakir Muhammad, who are currently standout students at the School of ABT). ‘I’m going to continue to be who I am and my experiences as a Black woman have made me who I am. All of a sudden now that I’m in this position, I’m not going to say, ‘I’m just a dancer.’ It’s a huge deal because I’m a Black woman. That’s why it’s a big deal…”

You’ll Need More Than A Credit Card To Get Your Hands on Saint Laurent’s New Couture Collection

With price tags in the 5-digit range, couture collections are prohibitively expensive for most of us. But now, Saint Laurent is taking the already exclusive category to the next level.

Today, the French fashion house announced plans to bring back couture with “Yves Saint Laurent” Couture ivory silk label under the tutelage of designer Hedi Slimane. The house’s last couture show was in 2002 and designed by the late Yves Saint Laurent, who died in 2008.

The new collection of silky tuxedos and black column dresses will debut in Saint Laurent ads shot by Slimane next month. But shelling out tens of thousands of dollars for a look simply won’t be enough to get your hands on one. According to the brand’s chief executive, Francesca Bellettini, you’ll also need to be a “friend of the house”.

“Hedi Slimane decides these orders case by case. Unlike a couture collection, this is an even more exclusive definition,” Bellettini, told The New York Times. It’s not that there isn’t merit to these oft-touted nuggets of wisdom for aspiring artists, it’s just that, sometimes, following your heart won’t help you pay rent on time. 

If you’re looking for the kind of advice that, while it may not look as great on an inspirational postcard, will help you actually sustain yourself as a working artist, we highly suggest Alix Sloan‘s Launching Your Art Career: A Practical Guide for Artists.

Sloan, a curator and consultant, enlists the help of 40 artists and dealers to compile a bullshit-free guide to making art, making connections, making sales and making money. We’ve compiled some of our favorite parts below, to give you a taste. 

Behold, 12 pieces of actually practical advice for a struggling, emerging or really any sort of artist.

1. Take the job. “Don’t be one of those cliché art school kids who considers himself above the idea of art as commodity. Take the commercial work. Take the design work. Do the band’s poster for $ 20 and a six-pack. Do whatever it takes to be able to call yourself a working artist. It’s a noble title, regardless of the particulars.” Noah Antieau, art dealer

2. Make nice! “Your best connections are your peers. Stay in contact with them. Be curious. Visit other artist’s studios and add like-minded people to your mailing list.” -Cara Enteles, artist

 4. 5. It’s just another job. “When I’m talking with younger artists I stress that making, exhibiting and selling art in a commercial gallery is just like any other job one hopes to be successful at. It means working hard, honoring deadlines and trusting your co-workers to do their jobs well too.” -William Baczek, art dealer

6. Don’t go crazy with the zeros. “Don’t raise your prices too fast because once they are up, you should not lower them.” -Jayme McLellan, art dealer 

7. More, more, more! “Feed your output with as much input (books, lectures, films, leisure, rest) as you can handle, and in some cases, more than you can manage.” -Didier William, artist 

8. Keep your friends close and your inspiration closer. “Now there are endless images at your fingertips, but you need to find the ones that awaken your creativity and keep them near to you. Sometimes it can be something blurry and vague … I have this one little scrap of paper with a very low-res image of a kitten’s face on it, and something about it makes me come back to it again and again, trying to capture something elusive about it. When you find an image like that, hold onto it like it was gold.” -Marion Peck, artist 

9. Get that domain name stat. “You don’t need business cards. You do need a website.” -Zach Feuer, art dealer

10. Don’t get comfortable. “You may have to work at a real job while you are making this happen. DO NOT get a creative job. Get a job you won’t get comfortable in. Save all your creative juices for your own art practice!” -Martha Rich, artist  

11. Embrace the tribe. “It’s good to remember (not when you are making new work as it might be better to forget) that there are armies of manically mono-focused people (I almost said monsters) out there who want something close to what you want. They are your tribe, not your enemy.” -David Humphrey, artist 

12. Go outside. “Stay deeply connected to what’s going on in your own art world. Under no circumstances isolate yourself in the studio with a solitary practice, thinking you’re some kind of lone wolf or Van Gogh.” -Mark Wolfe, art dealer

More Stuff Hemingway Never Said

It must be wonderful to be dead and keep writing. I guess when you’re a genius, nothing can stop you.

Like Hemingway. He died in 1961 but he keeps writing all kinds of snappy lines. I just saw a new posthumous quote this week: “The first draft of anything is shit.” It’s all over the Internet.

Imagine the excitement of the people hearing it at a writers conference séance when he transmitted that brilliant, ineffable wisdom to them from The Other Side!

Right.

But if you feel unhappy about your first draft, or you want to encourage someone who just showed you a draft that could be a lot better, why not attribute the maudlin line to a master like Hemingway for comfort? Or Faulkner or Neil Gaiman or J.K. Rowling or Stephen King or Anne Rice or any writer at all….

Hell, even Snooki might inspire some people because her name is on books, right? if they’re desperate enough?

Here’s the thing. Quote-grabbers who are overly reliant on Google and Goodreads fall into the Famous Writer Quotation Trap all the time: they don’t bother checking for a source. They also don’t bother checking to see if there’s a web site which might list that quote as not being by the author. Yes, web sites like that really exist for famous writers.

Of course, there’s always Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations or The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations…. If you’re embarrassed to go old-school, you don’t have to tell anyone.

How bad does spreading bogus quotations get? Check out the lines below. People who seriously think they’re by Hemingway, well, they haven’t read him. And if they have read him, maybe they were multi-tasking at the time, or stoned, or really just don’t get Hemingway.

Smiles Mean Money in France, But Hidden Benefits Are Even More Enriching

The French government has launched a new  campaign  to make its citizens smile in an effort to promote a more welcoming environment for tourists. But science tells us that French authorities will be beating their heads against the wall if they really think they can coax aloof Parisians to put on a happy face.

Because, well, there’s no smiling in France.

Or so say psychologists from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, who have found that the most expressive nations —  those with citizens who are quickest to crack a smile – are those with heavy immigrant populations. That puts the homogeneous France near the bottom of the list with Russia and Japan. Among the leaders: Canada, Brazil and the good ol’ U.S.A.

So, what is it about living in the world’s melting pots that puts smiles on the faces of their citizenry? Simply put, a smile is the mother tongue. It bridges language barriers, predicts trust and signals friendly intentions among people of disparate origin.

And conversely, it is a lack of smiles, among other things, that has given France a reputation for being a difficult place to visit, especially if you don’t speak the language.

This isn’t the first time the French have tried to legislate smiles to convey warmth to tourists. The current effort is similar to campaigns in  2003  and 2009 , when the tourism board set up “smile ambassadors” at the nation’s most-visited spots. But by all accounts, the efforts of the police du sourire fell flat. Those smiles turned – or stayed – upside down.

What Happens to Our Brains When We Smile

There is fascinating research about the power of an upturned mouth. Smiling activates the release of neurotransmitters, including dopamine and serotonin, that help  fight off stress. Having  too little of these brain chemicals has been linked to depression. When we smile, we also trigger the release of “happy hormones,” including  endorphins, the same chemicals that give us that “runner’s high” after exercising. Even aping a smile can spark a feeling of  happiness  and  reduce stress. Charles Darwin was the first to suggest that one’s emotions could be enhanced by one’s expressions, positing that just the  act  of smiling produces positive emotion.

Fast forward more than 100 years and “positive emotion” leads off renowned positive psychologist Martin Seligman’s five-sided PERMA model of the traits that foster well-being. According to Seligman, there are two kinds of smiles, the “Duchenne smile” and the “Pan American” smile. The Duchenne smile (named for neurologist Guillaume Duchenne) is involuntary and genuine. It is a broad smile that forms wrinkles on the outer edges of the eyes (i.e. crow’s feet). On the other hand, the Pan Am smile (the forced smile of flight attendants from the long-defunct airline), is inauthentic. It involves only the muscles of the mouth. But back to our poker-faced friends around the world: In the UW-Madison study, researchers examined the psychology of smiling in 726 people from nine countries and compared the results for each country with its immigration numbers. Participants were asked what constituted a good reason to smile, with options like, “is a happy man,” “to sell you something,” or “feels inferior to you.”

The results? Countries with more immigration over the last 500 years were more likely to interpret the smile as a happy or friendly gesture.

In countries with less diverse pasts, such as France, Russia and Japan, the act of  smiling  is more complex. Japanese people will grin to  mask negative feelings. The Japanese tend to control their expression of emotion so much so that people there have been  given instruction in the art of the smile. Meanwhile, the French are so notorious for not smiling that the British tourism group VisitBritain released a guidebook with tips for U.K. hoteliers to avoid offending guests from other nations. “Don’t exchange a smile or make eye contact with anyone from France who you do not know,” the guidebook states.

But can we equate the act of smiling with true happiness? In a paper called “The French Unhappiness Puzzle,” economist Claudia Senik argues that France’s “cultural mentality” makes the French far less happy than their wealth and lifestyle would predict. Senik’s research suggests that French unhappiness is due in large part to “multi-dimensional” dissatisfaction and a low level of trust in other people. She says policies to address unhappiness in France should start in early childhood.

A smile, real or fake, is a good starting point, and the bigger the grin, the better. Researchers at  Wayne State University analyzed the smiles of 230 Major League Baseball players culled from their 1952 trading cards to test how positive emotions affect longevity. The intensity of the players’ smiles was compared with life data for the men, controlling for body mass index, education, career length and other factors. As it turned out, the players with the broadest smiles lived seven years longer.

The Big Picture

The UW-Madison researchers believe there are public policy implications that come with exposure to, and understanding of, diverse cultures living within the same borders. For example, said lead author Paula Niedenthal, citizens “may be more or less willing to pay for universal healthcare, because they empathize differently with in-group and out-group members.”

So let’s hope the French Smile Revolution is a winner this time around. It’ll build trust among tourists and natives alike, and lift moods all around. Personally, I hope the friendly efforts penetrate deeper than a superficial strategy aimed at fiscal gain, because we don’t have to excavate ancient history to see how the smile has been  used as a  propaganda  tool.

Here in the free world, I highly recommend smiling. And go all the way. You can fake it ’til you make it, but the Duchenne smile is a  more powerful mood changer  than the perfunctory one flashed at the Pan Am jet-setters.

The Naked Dress Just Got Even More Naked

Naked dresses have been making headlines lately—just think back to the sheer number with strategically placed embellishments worn by Beyoncé Knowles, Kim Kardashian West, and Jennifer Lopez to the Met Gala in May, and it seems the next iteration of the look is upon us: the side naked dress.

We’re only just seeing the trend truly develop at the couture shows taking place in Paris this week. The look was first spotted on Sunday, when Karlie Kloss wore her Atelier Versace finale dress right off the runway and into the AmfAR dinner that followed. From the front, the violet gown with sheer skirt was fairly unassuming by runway standards, then—wham!—she turned to the side to reveal that there was basically no fabric on either side of the bodice.

The second sighting of the side naked dress came at the Dior Haute Couture show, where Raf Simons showed a sleeveless gown with a plunging neckline—completely bare at either side, held together only by two small link chains.

40 Years of Stanford Research Found That People With This One Quality Are More Likely to Succeed

In the 1960s, a Stanford professor named Walter Mischel began conducting a series of important psychological studies.

During his experiments, Mischel and his team tested hundreds of children — most of them around the ages of 4 and 5 years old — and revealed what is now believed to be one of the most important characteristics for success in health, work and life.

Let’s talk about what happened and, more importantly, how you can use it.

The Marshmallow Experiment

The experiment began by bringing each child into a private room, sitting them down in a chair, and placing a marshmallow on the table in front of them.

At this point, the researcher offered a deal to the child.

The researcher told the child that he was going to leave the room and that if the child did not eat the marshmallow while he was away, then they would be rewarded with a second marshmallow. However, if the child decided to eat the first one before the researcher came back, then they would not get a second marshmallow.

So the choice was simple: one treat right now or two treats later.

The researcher left the room for 15 minutes.

As you can imagine, the footage of the children waiting alone in the room was rather entertaining. Some kids jumped up and ate the first marshmallow as soon as the researcher closed the door. Others wiggled and bounced and scooted in their chairs as they tried to restrain themselves, but eventually gave in to temptation a few minutes later. And finally, a few of the children did manage to wait the entire time.

Published in 1972, this popular study became known as The Marshmallow Experiment, but it wasn’t the treat that made it famous. The interesting part came years later.

The Power of Delayed Gratification

As the years rolled on and the children grew up, the researchers conducted follow up studies and tracked each child’s progress in a number of areas. What they found was surprising.

The children who were willing to delay gratification and waited to receive the second marshmallow ended up having higher SAT scores, lower levels of substance abuse, lower likelihood of obesity, better responses to stress, better social skills as reported by their parents, and generally better scores in a range of other life measures. The researchers followed each child for more than 40 years and over and over again, the group who waited patiently for the second marshmallow succeed in whatever capacity they were measuring. In other words, this series of experiments proved that the ability to delay gratification was critical for success in life.

And if you look around, you’ll see this playing out everywhere…

  • If you delay the gratification of watching television and get your homework done now, then you’ll learn more and get better grades.
  • If you delay the gratification of buying desserts and chips at the store, then you’ll eat healthier when you get home.
  • If you delay the gratification of finishing your workout early and put in a few more reps, then you’ll be stronger.

… and countless other examples.

Success usually comes down to choosing the pain of discipline over the ease of distraction. And that’s exactly what delayed gratification is all about.

This brings us to an interesting question: Did some children naturally have more self-control, and thus were destined for success? Or can you learn to develop this important trait?

What Determines Your Ability to Delay Gratification?

Researchers at the University of Rochester decided to replicate the marshmallow experiment, but with an important twist. (You can read the study here.)

Before offering the child the marshmallow, the researchers split the children into two groups.

The first group was exposed to a series of unreliable experiences. For example, the researcher gave the child a small box of crayons and promised to bring a bigger one, but never did. Then the researcher gave the child a small sticker and promised to bring a better selection of stickers, but never did.

Meanwhile, the second group had very reliable experiences. They were promised better crayons and got them. They were told about the better stickers and then they received them.

You can imagine the impact these experiences had on the marshmallow test. The children in the unreliable group had no reason to trust that the researchers would bring a second marshmallow and thus they didn’t wait very long to eat the first one.

Meanwhile, the children in the second group were training their brains to see delayed gratification as a positive. Every time the researcher made a promise and then delivered on it, the child’s brain registered two things: 1) waiting for gratification is worth it and 2) I have the capability to wait. As a result, the second group waited an average of four times longer than the first group.

In other words, the child’s ability to delay gratification and display self-control was not a predetermined trait, but rather was impacted by the experiences and environment that surrounded them. In fact, the effects of the environment were almost instantaneous. Just a few minutes of reliable or unreliable experiences were enough to push the actions of each child in one direction or another.

What can you and I learn from all of this?

How to Become Better at Delaying Gratification

Before we go further, let’s clear one thing up: for one reason or another, the Marshmallow Experiment has become particularly popular. You’ll find it mentioned in nearly every major media outlet. But these studies are just one piece of data, a small insight into the story of success. Human behavior (and life in general) is a lot more complex than that, so let’s not pretend that one choice a four-year-old makes will determine the rest of his or her life.

But…

The studies above do make one thing clear: if you want to succeed at something, at some point you will need to find the ability to be disciplined and take action instead of becoming distracted and doing what’s easy. Success in nearly every field requires you to ignore doing something easier (delaying gratification) in favor of doing something harder (doing the work and putting in your reps).

But the key takeaway here is that even if you don’t feel like you’re good at delaying gratification now, you can train yourself to become better simply by making a few small improvements. In the case of the children in the study, this meant being exposed to a reliable environment where the researcher promised something and then delivered it.

You and I can do the same thing. We can train our ability to delay gratification, just like we can train our muscles in the gym. And you can do it in the same way as the child and the researcher: by promising something small and then delivering. Over and over again until your brain says, 1. Yes, it’s worth it to wait and 2. Yes, I have the capability to do this.

Here are 4 simple ways to do exactly that:

  1. Start incredibly small. Make your new habit “so easy you can’t say no.” (Hat tip to Leo Babauta.)
  2. Improve one thing, by one percent. Do it again tomorrow.
  3. Use the “Seinfeld Strategy” to maintain consistency.
  4. Find a way to get started in less than two minutes.

Afloat Once More on San Francisco Opera’s Show Boat…and in Its Wake, ‘Sweeney Todd’

I just had one of the best opera experiences of my life, attending San Francisco Opera’s terrific production of The Trojans, with its gorgeous music by Hector Berlioz, monumental sets and some of the best singers performing today. (While the run for both The Trojans and Two Women has ended, this summer’s third production, The Marriage of Figaro, has one last performance on Sunday afternoon.) It made my summer, but more on all that soon.

Last summer, the opera-going highlight for me was something entirely different: Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein‘s Show Boat. That production was filmed and is now available on Blu-ray and DVD, so you have a chance to see and enjoy what I did.

Some regular opera goers, of course, were disappointed to find this musical on the short summer lineup. I certainly understand the lack of appeal of many typical Broadway musicals, with their often generic, bombastic, less than nuanced, over-miked voices. But as SFO’s delightful Porgy and Bess, which I saw in 2009, and Show Boat prove, a well-done production, with vibrant sets and costumes, good dancing, engaging acting, a top-tier orchestra (guest conductor John DeMain led the San Francisco Opera Orchestra for both Porgy and Bess and Show Boat), and singers with fine operatic voices, can be absolutely exhilarating. Think of Ezio Pinza on the cast album of South Pacific. Some enchanted evening, indeed!

Thus: Show Boat. Soprano Heidi Stober, who played Magnolia, daughter of the riverboat’s Cap’n Andy, had performed here not long before in The Magic Flute and Falstaff. Star soprano Patricia Racette sang Julie, the showboat’s leading lady, who passes for white until her mixed parentage is revealed, in the same SFO summer season in which she was Madama Butterfly. Bass Morris Robinson offered a show-stopping “Ol’ Man River,” and personally, I can’t wait to see baritone Michael Todd Simpson, who made his local debut as Gaylord Ravenal, the charming gambler who marries Magnolia, again.

A cool thing about this production, though, is that Broadway actors were cast as well. Who wouldn’t want to see the great physical actor Bill Irwin as Cap’n Andy? His hilarious one-man depiction of a fistfight is a showstopper in itself. (Speaking of versatility, Irwin won a Tony in 2005 for playing George in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf!). The Broadway vets include Kirsten Wyatt (the lead in Sweet Charity, Miss Adelaide in Guys and Dolls), John Bolton (Spamalot, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, TV’s Gossip Girls), and Harriet Harris (On the Town, Tony winner for Thoroughly Modern Millie, the indelible Bebe Glazer on TV’s Frasier). James Asher, in a small role as the manager of the seedy Chicago cabaret in which Magnolia finds work after the dead-broke Ravenal leaves her, has acted in plays such as Love’s Labour’s Lost and The Laramie Project.

That’s a lot of names and credits. My point is that the variety of actors and voices and styles adds another level of interest and enjoyment to this show. Which must lead to a shout-out for Tod Nixon, Show Boat‘s sound designer. Unlike musical theater performers, opera singers don’t use mikes; Nixon came up with a way of placing area microphones so that the sound was consistent and clear, without that somewhat tinny, vibrating quality that microphones bring.

Premiering in 1927, Show Boat is considered the first great American musical. In 1982, Houston Grand Opera, then led by San Francisco Opera general director David Gockley, with John DeMain as its music director and principal conductor, created an “historic” production that restored much of Kern and Hammerstein’s original score and dialogue. We saw this production of Show Boat thanks to Houston Grand Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and Washington National Opera, as well as SFO.

In his program notes, Gockley reminded us that Show Boat is “steeped in the musical language and plot issues of our native culture” and said that it could open the door at SFO to “operatic musicals” such as Carousel and Sweeney Todd. It did! Gockley’s final season with San Francisco’s great opera company opens in September with Verdi’s Luisa Miller, followed immediately by Stephen Sondheim’s delicious Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Yay!

5 Ways to Have More Pleasurable Sex

When we get sex ed as young people, we almost never get information about pleasure. Much of the early messaging we get is shame-based and only highlights the dangers of sex. We might be taught to avoid sexually transmissible infections and pregnancy, but we’re rarely taught how to discover and negotiate our pleasure.

As the pursuit of pleasure is the primary reason most of us have sex, here are five ways to have more of it in your sex life.

1. Use lube with condoms.

I have a public health background, so I’ve seen my fair share of condom demonstrations. It’s amazing to me that condom use is so often taught without mentioning lube.

Using lube with condoms makes them feel so much better. It’s night and day. A drop in the tip before it’s rolled on, plus a bit on the outside once it’s unfurled, can do wonders.

The lubricant that the condom comes with is just enough to keep the condom from drying out in transport — not enough for it to stay lubricated during intercourse. Add other variables like a wider penis, longer-than-average sex play, or medication that reduces vaginal lubrication, and lube becomes an even greater need.

Do yourself (and your genitals) a favor: if you’re using barriers of any sort, get a high-quality, latex-friendly lubricant.

2. Give the vagina time to tent.

When a vagina is getting aroused, the area around the cervix lengthens and widens creating a “tenting” effect. This allows the vagina to accommodate a penis or toy with more comfort and ease.

Key thing: It takes at least 10 minutes of foreplay for tenting to occur. You can’t rush it. For most women, this means clitoral stimulation happening in a context that is sexually exciting.

In my workshops, I’ve had many women ask me what to do when their male partners get immediately aroused but it takes for them longer to get there.

My answer? Communicate that foreplay is key for your enjoyment and make the foreplay mutual. Do things to each other that turn you both on, either in turns or at the same time. It’ll be so fun that no one will be looking at the clock.

3. Strengthen (and relax!) your pelvic floor.

Most of us know it’s important to do our Kegels — the exercises that strengthen our pelvic floor. A strong pelvic floor increases bladder control as we age, supports our posture, and – here comes the pleasure part – helps us have stronger orgasms. You can even get vaginal weights to upgrade your Kegel workout.

But here’s what often missing from how-to-do-your-Kegels articles: Relaxation is just as important as strengthening your pelvic floor. Muscles only build when they are at rest. It’s like how you can’t fix a car while it’s running.

If you’re practicing your Kegels, make sure to take deep breaths and fully relax those muscles after your workout.

Note: If you have pelvic pain, you should ask your healthcare provider before starting a pelvic floor workout regime.

4. Want to find the G-spot? Don’t give up on it after one go.

A lot of mainstream adult sex ed talks about the G-spot as though it’s a magic button that when pressed, transmits immediate waves of bliss. It doesn’t work this way for many folks. It may take a couple weeks of regular massage to wake up the area. And some people never find the G-spot super erotic (also totally normal).

Often, when people first go about finding the G-spot, they just felt like they have to pee. It makes sense — the G-spot is a nexus of tissues right in front of the bladder.

But some folks are determined and push past those initial need-to-pee feelings. Many of them empty their bladders beforehand and with time, they find that the area wakes up to pleasurable feelings.

Lesson: Take your time. Some things don’t happen over night.

5. People vary in what they like. Ask, “What would delight you?”

So many sex articles and books frame good sex as a combination lock; just get the right moves and it will magically unlock. But the reality is that humans vary widely in what they enjoy in bed.

What one person goes crazy for will feel weird and unpleasant to someone else.

If you want to upgrade your sex life, ask questions like, “What would delight you?” and “What would totally turn you on?” These questions can open lots of pleasurable possibilities.

Know your own answers to these questions, too. Part of what makes one a good lover is knowing what one likes and having the communication skills to articulate that to partners.

6 Ways to Get More Love in Your Life

The Beatles said it best: “Love is all you need.” But do you feel you have enough love in your personal life? According to a 2010 survey by the Fetzer Institute, 68 percent of Americans say they need more meaningful love in their lives and 95 percent believe that we need more love in the world.

Since love is one of the most basic human emotions, how can it be that so many of us find it lacking in our lives? We see the word “love” used everywhere these days in advertising for material goods like hamburgers, cars, shoes, eyeglasses and cosmetics. But the genuine love that so many of us long for in our lives involves so much more than the excitement we feel over our favorite footwear.

True love is a powerful, creative force that can inspire humans to write symphonies, trek for months on foot, build a massive mausoleum, and make superhuman sacrifices. But love also leaves us feeling vulnerable and opens us up to possible rejection. Love requires courage, patience and effort, which are difficult to maintain in our fast-paced, superficial society.

While many of us are searching for romantic love, remember that true love comes in many different forms and circumstances. Getting more love in your life requires more than dating tips; you’ll have to work at it and make some inner changes to find love that has deeper meaning. Here are some steps you can take to help you cultivate true love:

# 1. Love Yourself First

Before you can share love with others you have to feel it within yourself. That means you need to find practices and routines that help you genuinely love who you are, just as you are right now.

Try taking yourself on a “date” once a week and spend time alone, doing something you thoroughly enjoy. For example:

  • Linger with a latte and a good book at your favorite coffee shop

  • Take a walk in nature

  • Visit an art gallery or museum that inspires you

  • Attend a concert

  • Watch a video about love

As you spend this time with yourself, focus your intention on truly loving YOU and filling yourself up with positive feelings and energy. The more you concentrate on loving yourself the more you will radiate positive feelings of love toward others and attract their love in return.

#2. Recognize Your Barriers to Love

The Sufi poet and philosopher Rumi wrote: “Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.”

Whether you realize it or not, you may have barriers hidden within you that prevent you from giving and receiving love. Perhaps you have been hurt or betrayed by a past relationship or you fear being vulnerable to other people.

Spend some time in contemplation and write in your journal about your past experiences with love and how you feel about giving yourself over to love. Once you identify your own internal barriers to love you will be able to heal your wounds from the past and rise above them. This is an important step if you want to deepen your ability to genuinely love others.

#3 Practice the Lovingkindness Blessing

This Buddhist blessing (also called “Metta”) can be a powerful reminder to love yourself and others if you use it as a daily practice. Here are the five phrases of the blessing:

  • May I be at peace.

  • May my heart remain open.

  • May I realize the beauty of my own true nature.

  • May I be healed.

  • May I be a source of healing for this world.

Repeat this blessing every day as part of your daily practice and you will begin to feel your heart expanding with compassion for yourself and others. Next change the “I” in each phrase to “you” and use the blessing to send love to someone else.

#4. Give For the Sake of Giving

One of the best ways to bring more love into your life is to give your time and energy to others who need your help. Volunteer at an animal shelter, Head Start program, homeless shelter, or nursing home and you will find ample opportunities to share your love with others who need to be loved.

When you give of yourself with no expectation of return, you will find that you are blessed in many ways and love will begin flowing through you freely. You will begin to attract others into your life who can appreciate your loving and generous behavior.

#5. Open Your Heart

The HeartMath Institute teaches a simple method for opening your heart to love called the Inner Ease Technique. Use this practice as part of your daily routine (along with the Lovingkindness Blessing) and you will soon be able to overcome the barriers to love you have identified. Here are the steps:

  • Place your hand on your heart area and imagine you are breathing in and out through your heart.

  • Breathe slowly and gently until your breathing feels smooth and balanced, not forced.

  • With each breath draw in a feeling of inner-ease, balance and self-love into your heart.

You can do this practice in any place at any time to reduce anxiety and open yourself up to others.

#6. Find Love In Every Situation

As you open your heart to love and expand your capacity to express love for yourself and others, you will begin to see love everywhere you go. Then love can become your “default mechanism” so that you will choose love whenever you are in a situation of doubt or uncertainty.

For example, if a conflict arises with coworkers or a friend, choose the solution that contains the most love. If you face a crisis and must decide on your next steps, let love be your guide. When you need to give feedback to another person, be motivated by love rather than anger.

As you practice embodying love in your life in various ways, you will discover that you have always had all the love you need — you just couldn’t see it before. When you become a walking, talking vision of love you will become irresistible to other people who will be drawn to you by your beautiful presence.

The entire world will benefit from the love you put into practice, as you radiate love out to others and create more happiness and joy wherever you go. The love the world needs is right there inside you — now, go find it!

How Sheryl Lee Ralph Plans To Make More People Aware Of Their HIV Status

Saturday marks the 20th Anniversary of National HIV Testing Day and legendary actress Sheryl Lee Ralph is helping to raise awareness by encouraging Americans to get tested.

Ralph’s commitment to the cause prompted the 1990 launch of her nonprofit, Divinely Inspired Victoriously Aware (D.I.V.A.) Foundation, which works to lower the infection rates of HIV/AIDS through testing, erase stigma and develop programs to combat the disease.

During an interview with The Huffington Post, Ralph explained the importance — especially within the black community — of knowing one’s status.

“Knowing what is going on in your body is some of the best information you can ever have. But the whole idea behind testing, it’s not just limited to just HIV and AIDS, when it comes to black people there is one thing they do not know, they don’t know their status,” she said.

“They don’t know their numbers around diabetes, they don’t know their numbers around cholesterol, they don’t know their numbers around high blood pressure. So we are really, really stressing that people know exactly who they are when it comes to HIV and AIDS and get tested.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 1.2 million people in the United States are living with HIV, and almost 14 percent don’t even know they have it. The black community is disproportionately affected — black people make up 12 percent of the U.S. population, but in 2010, they accounted for approximately 44 percent of new infections.

Although Ralph’s foundation focuses specifically on women and children, the “Dreamgirls” star said her initiative isn’t limited to them.

“You don’t just help some and not others. That’s what got us to this position to begin with,” she said. “Folks didn’t want to help gay people when it was considered a gay health crisis. Folks were very, very slow to come to help when it became an issue for people of color.”

“This disease doesn’t care what color you are, it doesn’t care what race you are. It doesn’t care about your gender.”

In addition to the D.I.V.A. Foundation’s mission rid the stigma of testing, the actress-singer is also celebrating the 25th anniversary of her annual DIVAS Simply Singing benefit concert with two special events taking place in Philadelphia in August and in Los Angeles in October.

‘Grace and Frankie’ Highlights More Than Jane Fonda’s Ageless Beauty

Jane Fonda is known for her serious roles and personal activism, and now, at 77, the timeless actress is jumping back into comedy, too. In fact, she’s funnier (and more strikingly beautiful, often outshining stunners like Angelina Jolie) than ever in her buzzed-about new Netflix TV series, “Grace and Frankie.” Co-starring Lily Tomlin, 75, the duo plays two rival wives whose husbands fall in love with each other and leave them, forcing the frenemies to commiserate and navigate their new life as roommates and senior singles.

The series premiered in May to rave reviews and has already been renewed for a second season. In a recent interview, Fonda says she suggests binge-watching the show, as all the episodes premiered at once to a mere total of six and a half hours.

Fonda is so dazzling in the role, as is Tomlin, that I’m grouping them with more of my fabulous leading lady favorites dominating television right now, including Viola Davis, Kerry Washington and Julianna Margulies.

It’s no secret that these strong, seasoned female leads are making major Hollywood waves right now, and “Grace and Frankie” could pave the way for more thoughtful, well-written comedies and dramas for the 50+ set. (I already miss “Hot in Cleveland” and its fearless firehouse Betty White!) After all, there is plenty of relatable material to pick from: late-in-life divorce, an economy that’s too tough for retirement and even gender identity questions now in the news thanks to Caitlyn Jenner.

As if “Grace and Frankie” isn’t bringing to light enough real-life issues in its plot lines, the show’s production made even more headlines regarding another issue: the gender wage gap. It’s been reported that these two sparkling leads are getting paid the same as Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston, who are only supporting cast. Fans are rabidly petitioning online for Netflix to pony up, even as Fonda and Tomlin are claiming their salary joke was taken out of context.

The timing couldn’t be better. Just as we are entering the chaos of the first female running for President, it’s comforting knowing that networks and shows like this keep pushing accomplished older women to the forefront of our culture. Netflix has my vote — and Hillary might, too.

5 Easy Ways to Become More Empowered

Caitlyn took the Internet by storm earlier this week, setting herself apart from men, women and other celebrities with facades, simply by copping up to who she really is and always has been. Oh- and that’s Caitlyn with a “C”, not a “K”. Sorry not sorry, Kris? I think we have an empowered woman on our hands and I couldn’t be more delighted!

The Vanity Fair teaser released on Monday gets me all sorts of excited and emotional. Caitlyn Jenner — the former Bruce Jenner — describes her transformation as finally becoming free. Feeling free and embracing your true self is all I can hope for- for anyone. It is a freedom worth fighting for. When you give yourself the space to love who you authentically are, you are able to live your life wholeheartedly.

Jenner compares her Vanity Fair cover shoot with winning the gold medal in the 1976 Olympics: “That was a good day, but the last couple of days are better… This shoot was about my life and who I am as a person.” Who would think that celebrating your own realness could feel better than becoming a world-class champ?

Well I’m all for it! And anyone can allow themselves that sort of satisfaction and independence because we all have the power to become the best versions of ourselves. So here are a few easy steps to take toward your own journey of accepting and loving who you really are as an individual and finding your personal sense of freedom:

1. F**k what people think of you
Understand that when people judge or criticize you, they are saying more about themselves then they are about you. I advise you to listen to what others say, but consider deeply — is this about you or them? Sometimes criticism can be helpful and beneficial for you. Other times, it may be directed toward you but not about you, so leave the purposeless stuff behind.

2. Don’t let society define you
This has to do with what’s expected of you. Courageous individuals and groups are breaking down the old-school compartments and labels, and have been for decades. Women were expected to be homemakers, men have to be the major ‘breadwinners’, same sex marriages aren’t acceptable, and more. Those ancient-minded ‘faux pas’ are becoming the new normal if they’re not already. You must do what brings YOU fulfillment.

3. Observe your intuition and inner thoughts
The only way to find yourself is to pay attention to what goes on in your own mind. As mentioned before, we are shaped by what we’ve learned throughout life. Make the differentiation between what you truly desire and what you’ve been conditioned to accept.

4. What makes you happy?
Write it down, make a list, keep a journal… but answer the question! And the second part to the question is: What are you passionate about? The answer to these two questions will be what drives you. Bring these interests, ideas and beliefs into your world.

5. The “golden rule”
