Celebrities’ Most Wanted(TM): The Top 10 Book of Lavish Lifestyles, Tabloid Tidbits, and Other Superstar Oddities

Team Aniston or Team Jolie? Whether you have admittedly chosen a side, chances are you know the feud these slogans reference and perhaps even remember where you were when news of the Aniston-Pitt split broke. Over the past three decades, buzz over the rich and famous has exploded, thanks in part to refined technology, well-oiled media outlets, and a dedicated few who have greased up their own laptops to challenge the tabloid giants (think Perez Hilton). Much to their chagrin, or so they say, celebrities have become all the rage, lending to their adoring, or simply inquisitive, public not only a glamorous escapism but also the reality that even megastars suffer fault.Marjorie Hallenbeck-Huber fills you in on the juiciest bits to hit the celebrity gossip circuit over the past three decades. Read about the most bizarre hookups (Lance Armstrong and an Olsen twin, anyone?); marriages that lasted a Hollywood second, or fifty-five hours in the case of Britney Spears; celebrity baby names, like Heavenly Hiranni Tiger Lily, that even the creative teams at Crayola could not dream up; diet tricks and training regimens that guarantee a camera-ready body; “it” travel destinations where celebs go to laze under the sun-or to do good; and infamous crack-ups that surely sent publicists into a damage-control frenzy. Did we forget to mention sex tapes?Celebrities’ Most WantedT grants you access to the fascinating world of the rich and famous, where Red Carpet is a

The Most Crazy-Expensive Outfits at Coachella: A $3,350 Dress as a Shirt! A $3,980 Denim Shorts Outfit!

For most Coachella-goers, a weekend in the desert is a time to get grungy (and plan their shower-less beauty routines accordingly). But for celebs, the dirt, heat and sweat somehow don’t have any effect on their style. In fact, they pack only the most expensive, high-end, straight-off-the-runway pieces for their weekend in the desert: One star actually wore $ 13,584.99 worth of designer duds. Read on to find out who!

Kiernan Shipka Coachella 2016Ari Perilstein/Getty; Michael Kovac/Getty; REX/Shu

Kiernan Shipka may be 16 years old, but she’s not like any other teenager on the planet. While most teens hit the mall, shopping stores like Forever 21 and H&M, for their fringe and jorts, for Shipka it’s all high-end all the time. In fact, three of the outfits she sported throughout the weekend racked in at a grand total of $ 13,584.99. You read that right.

The first look is far more sensible than the rest (yes, we’re calling her $ 695 floral Rebecca Taylor midi sensible) and it’s not just because she paired it with comfy New Balance sneakers ($ 109.99). It’s because her denim butterfly-printed Valentino two-piece rings up at $ 3,980 ($ 2,190 for the shorts, $ 1,790 for the top). Plus, her Stella McCartney platforms cost $ 1,100.

But she didn’t stop there: She topped her $ 4,000 blue jean getup with another haute piece. Her watercolor dress is from Dior’s Spring 2016 collection and retails for $ 5,500 — but because she lined hers with a top and short underneath, that adds another $ 2,200 to the bill. (The $ 1,100 platforms made another appearance here too.)

10 Most Devastating Virus Outbreaks in Games

From The Last of Us to Resident Evil, from Sunset Overdrive to The Division, viral outbreaks can ruin video game worlds in any number of ways. But what is it that makes certain video game pandemics stand out for the ever-growing zombie-infested crowd?

The following list explores our most memorable digital contagions, why they struck a chord with us, and the legacy they’ve left on the virus-ridden video game landscape.

Although viral outbreaks in video games tend to be based on fantastical circumstances, the most harrowing examples are the ones that could actually occur in reality. It’s not that I don’t believe in zombies per se, however when the illness or disease in question already exists in the real world, the possibility of a devastating plague feels easier to stomach. Add that to a feasible real life scenario and I’ll be over here cowering behind the couch. Tom Clancy’s The Division introduces Manhattan and the world to a smallpox pandemic that’s circulated via contaminated banknotes on one of the world’s busiest shopping days, Black Friday, dubbing the outbreak “Green Poison” and the “Dollar Flu.” Suddenly, the unrelenting moral panic and high-level hysteria the killer bug initiates seems just as terrifying as the ever-rising body count it has inflicted on society.

Which Stars Had the Most Fashion Collaborations in 2015? An In-Depth Investigation

When we started looking back at the biggest and best style moments of 2015, one thing stood out: Pretty much everyone had a collaboration. (Here’s where you imagine Oprah yelling “You get a collab! You get a collab! YOU get a collab!”) But some celebs were on a whole other level when it came to their partnerships. So much so that we felt it was our duty to round up the most sought-after celebrity collaborators of the year, and you’ll never believe who came out on top (Okay, fine, you totally will).

Kendall and KylieMatt Baron/Getty

Note: We had to set some parameters here. We only included collaborations with fashion and beauty brands that were active and/or announced in 2015, as well as the celebrities’ own brands when applicable. If the celeb is the face or ambassador of a brand but didn’t design something specifically for them, that doesn’t count. Also, although we love and respect Kendall and Kylie Jenner as individuals, many of their partnerships include them as a duo, so we counted them as one. Phew!

Celeb collaboration graphic 2015Jenners, Port and King: Getty; Chung and Olivia: S

And the winner is…Kendall and Kylie Jenner! Together, these two stylish sisters have clothing collaborations with Topshop, PacSun and Forever New (in Australia) as well as a shoe line that they announced this year. Kendall also has a lipstick with Estee Lauder (she is also the face of the brand), while Kylie has her Hair Kouture extension line with Bellami and, of course, Lip Kit by Kylie, which sold out in minutes…twice.

First look at Kendall + Kylie for @topshop holiday. The collection is available this Friday!

A photo posted by King Kylie (@kyliejenner) on

Olivia Palermo also had an impressive showing this year. The fashion plate acts as Ciaté London’s creative director, has a jewelry collection with BaubleBar, a line of sunglasses with Westward Leaning and a shoe collection with Aquazzura (technically late 2014, but we’ll count it). Lastly, she announced in October that she’ll be teaming up with Nordstrom for a collection slated to hit stores in February 2016.

Whitney Port had a big year — from that whole getting married thing to her four collaborations. As you know from The City, Port has her clothing line Whitney Eve (which also teamed up with FabFitFun this year — it’s a collab within a collab!). Plus, she has a partnership with Wella hair care, a line for QVC and designed a charitable tank top for Uniform.is that helps send children to school.

Jaime King, who gave birth to her second child this year, was all about the motherhood-themed collaborations. She had a collection with A Pea in the Pod, a children’s line with Sapling Kids and “mother-and-child-inspired” jewelry with Juno Lucia. Finally, revealed just last week that she’s launching her first makeup line with ColourPop.

RELATED VIDEO: Kendall and Kylie Have Huge Fashion News!

Jamie Chung rounds out our list with three big team-ups, with Havaianas, Make Up For Ever and Sachi jewelry. We have to give her a special shoutout though, because she’s also worked with everyone from Ralph Lauren to Fossil to Pandora jewelry this year in less official roles.

Which celebrity designer is your favorite? Who would you like to see team up next? Let us know in the comments!

How to Wear Slipper Mules, The Season’s Most Fabulous and Comfortable Shoe Trend

When you think of THE shoe of the season, images of sky high stilettos and head-turning over-the-knee boots normally come to mind. The chic, the incredible, but also the trends that don’t always make our toes super happy. Rejoice! The shoe we can’t get enough of this fall is not only elegant and polished, but also the most comfortable style around! With a flat sole and easy slip-on style, the slipper mule shoe trend is certainly one we can get behind—and suggest you quickly do too. While this season’s fur-lined Gucci loafer has become a favorite among bloggers and editors, this must-have shoe style comes in all styles, for all budgets.

Similar to a classic loafer in shape, this pair of flat kicks is polished enough to wear to the office with a tailored skirt and blouse, but we are equally excited to style them with off-duty denim and chunky knit sweaters. Not to mention that their slip-on-and-go quality makes all of our upcoming holiday travels a breeze (take that, airport security!)

Scroll through our favorite ways to style the slipper trend this fall, below!

The Most Beloved Quotes from ‘The Princess Bride’ on its 28th Anniversary

On October 9, 1987, The Princess Bride debuted in theaters. Legendary scribe William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Marathon Man, All the President’s Men) adapted the screenplay from his novel of the same name.

It would take 14 years for the book to became a movie, but it was well worth the wait. Part comedy, part adventure, part fairy tale, part love story, director Rob Reiner assembled a dream team cast which included Billy Crystal, Mandy Patinkin, Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Wallace Shawn, Carol Kane, Chris Sarandon, Christopher Guest, Fred Savage, Peter Falk, Mel Smith and André the Giant.

Beloved by millions of fans (which includes Bill Clinton and and the late Pope John Paul II), the American Film Institute ranks The Princess Bride in the top 100 Greatest Love Stories. And the Writers Guild of America says that Goldman’s script is one of greatest 100 screenplays of all time. Many people can quote every last line. And Cary Elwes who played the dashing Westley wrote a revealing account of the making of the film in his book, As You Wish.

On the 28th anniversary of The Princess Bride‘s release celebrate with some deliciously quotable lines from the film. Besides, one can never geek out too much over this gem of a movie. Click to this Parade.com story to read them all.

Not Like Most Young Girls

18 True Stories from the Urban UnderbellySex work-the world’s oldest profession. A world of shadows and sleaze. Of faceless, nameless individuals. Walking and talking bodies dolled up in glittering clothes and deceiving make-up, flashing frozen smiles, willing to sell themselves for a square meal. But carrying within them tarnished souls and fractured dignities. Not Like Most Young Girls is a collection of short stories written by young minds from eminent educational institutions from Mumbai, presenting before society the human beings hidden within the sex workers. These are stories of women, men and hijras who have come together under Aastha Parivaar. Not Like Most Young Girls is more than a book-it is an attempt to bring out of the shadows, these individuals who breathe, feel, and give back to society, just as any one of us do-or perhaps more.

See How The World’s Most Beautiful Ballerinas Are Taking Fashion By Storm

Move over A-list celebrities and big-time supermodels—the ballerinas are here! The fashion industry has been flirting with the dancer for awhile now and another company has just joined the list. Wolford, maker of both high-quality tights and Kim Kardashian West’s favorite dress-slash-skirt, has debuted some stunning images created in connection with photographer Dane Shitagi’s Ballerina Project, an Instagram-friendly collection of the world’s top dancers striking gorgeous poses on city streets and in leafy parks.

Ballerina Kathryn Boren in Wolford’s Joan trousers

A photo posted by Kathryn Boren (@katieboren1) on

Here’s Boren in Paris, wearing Wolford.

The images were created to go along with the company’s new “ballerina kits,” specially packaged combos of pieces like leg warmers, tights, and bodysuits that dancers might need during a rehearsal, intel gleaned from Wolford’s ongoing relationship with American Ballet Theatre dancers Isabella Boylston and Stephanie Williams.

Prior to these pointe-shoed beauties, the last ballet megastar to attract our attention was Misty Copeland, making big waves with her impressive Under Armour ads.

misty-copeland-under-armour-ad-ballet-barre

Misty Copeland for Under Armour

For fall 2014, AG Jeans relied heavily on ballerinas to show off how very stretchy its newest denim launch was. Gap jumped on the trend early, shooting San Francisco Ballet’s Yuan Yuan Tan back in 2012.

The ballet love affair is nothing new either. Way back in 2007, fixture company Brizo paired with Jason Wu and shot a campaign with dancers wearing Wu gowns and posing (beautifully) underwater. The relationship between luxury brands and the dance world has also resulted in a few campaigns featuring high-profile industry stars, though not until recently was the actual dance on display. Watch company Movado, for one, was a large sponsor of New York City Ballet and ran ads featuring principals like Paloma Herrera and Mikhail Baryshnikov.

The 10 Most Iconic VMA Red Carpet Fashion Moments, Ever

The Video Music Awards are happening this Sunday and it’s the kind of award show were style memories are made. It’s typically one of those red carpets where anything goes and, as such, stars feel a little more liberty to take risks. Sometimes it’s awesome and…sometimes it involves raw meat.

gwen-stefani-vmas-red-carpet-bra-top-1998
Back in 1998, Gwen Stefani was in the middle of her No Doubt heyday and her funky style was everything. She eschewed the dress in favor of a fuzzy triangle bikini top because, why not?

rose-mcgowan-see-through-dress-vmas-1998
Also in 1998: Rose McGowan walked the carpet with beau Marilyn Manson in a dress that was hardly a dress. Skinny chains gave her some coverage, but it was mostly all skin and g-string.

lil-kim-pasties-vmas-1999
Compared to Miss McGowan, Lil’ Kim’s infamous purple pastie felt like a lot of outfit. The sparkly jumpsuit would have been attention-grabbing enough on its own, but add in that extra skin and wowzee.

jennifer-lopez-white-crop-top-jeans-vmas-2000
In 2000, Jennifer Lopez attended the awards show with P Diddy in a combo of white crop top, jeans, and bandana that really showed her style circa the early aughts.

destinys-child-orange-outfits-vma-reds-carpet-2001
Before Beyonce was Beyonce, she was on the scene with Destiny’s Child. The trio attended red carpet events in a lot of matching outfits, including the orange and blue looks they rocked at the 2001 VMAs.

britney-spears-vmas-red-carpet-white-like-a-virgin-dress
When Britney Spears walked the red carpet in this Madonna-inspired outfit back in 2003, it might not have totally registered as being major. It wasn’t until her performance later—and the three-way lip-lock with Christina Aguilera and Madge—that it really became iconic.

cher-see-through-vmas-outfit-2010
Cher showed up at the VMAs in 2010 and brought her signature out-there style along with her. In place of a crazy gown, she wore a sheer bodysuit covered in crystals and topped with a tough leather jacket.

lady-gaga-meat-dress-vmas-2010
But try as Cher might, there was no way she could’ve eclipsed Lady Gaga in all her raw meat, erm, glory?

beyonce-red-dress-vmas-2011-pregnant
The big celebrity news of the 2011 ceremony was the extra curve that Beyonce was rocking. During her performance onstage, the singer slid her hand over her belly to announce, yup, there was an heir coming. You could see it in her red Lanvin gown too.

katy-perry-denim-versace-dress-vmas-2014
For last year’s red carpet, Katy Perry did an homage to Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake with a denim Versace dress she matched to her date.

A few of our red carpet favorites, along with some infamous performance outfits, have inspired what could be the ultimate tribute of all: Rice Krispie creations. Yup, you totally read that right.

Voltage Valet Grounded Electrical Adaptor for use in most Continental Europe countries and other world destinations

PackingLight.com’s job is to outfit the traveler with all of the travel essentials one needs to venture anywhere. Our selection of Voltage Valet Grounded Adaptors allow you to connect your grounded three pin appliance into the outlets of the world. The Voltage Valet GUB plug modifies grounded appliances to fit the electrical outlets found in most countries in Continental Europe and some other destinations throughout the world. (Italy and Switzerland have their own grounded adaptors)The question you may have is do I need a grounded adaptor? The answer is if your North American appliance has two flat blades and one round pin, your appliance is grounded and you need one of our grounded adaptors. In addition, you need to check your appliances to see if they are dual voltage and capable of working on 240 voltage overseas. We urge visitors to link to our Foreign Electrical page to get more in-depth information on when you need adaptors and converters for travel. Most often we find our customers do not need converters/transformers to bring down the 240 voltage found in foreign countries. The reason is they possess appliances that are already dual voltage with the capability to use anywhere without using converters. That is correct, people with most battery chargers and small travel appliances can check their appliance and discover their appliance has a rating specification that reads “100/240V”–indicating that the appliance is dual voltage and can work on the high 240 voltage abroad. So please check your chargers for MP3 players, digital cameras, razors, camcorders, cell phones, etc. and look for yourself. In addition, check your compact, folding hair dryers, travel curling irons and straighteners, travel steamers, irons, and coffee makers. If they’re built specifically for travel and/or purchased from PackingLight.com, we can save you the cost of buying a converter when you probably don’t need it!NOTE: Some countries use more than one type of outlet and you should carry the appropriate adaptor for each outlet listed. Again, adaptor plugs DO NOT convert electricity – they simply modify foreign outlets. To determine the adaptor plug you need see our link to Voltage Valet’s country list in the Electricity Guide section. http://www.voltagevalet.com/elec_guide.htmlIf you have any questions call us on our toll free number: 1-800-349-0525. Hilarious Black Dude Answers White People’s Most Burning Questions

“Have you ever had a question you wanted to ask the one black friend that you know, but refrained because you didn’t want to run the risk of sounding racist?”

That’s the question Gabriel Green asked at the College Union Poetry Slam Invitational finals  in March. Green, a student at Eastern Michigan University, gives hilarious responses to common mysteries he assumes white people are dying to solve. For example, why are black people so good at basketball?

His explanations are funny, but also serve to demystify the black experience for his white peers.

On his list of questions is, “Do black people hate all white people?” to which Green says, “Of course we don’t, we just hate the people who perpetuate or refuse to acknowledge the history of social, political, and racial f**kery placed against us.”

And yes, Green reminds white audience members, if you have to ask if something is racist… it is.

The competition included several other talented poets that performed pieces about the challenges of black experience. Head over to Button Poetry to watch those.

Lunch With Stephen: The Most Important Meal Of The Day

They say there’s no such thing as a free lunch. That old adage is beginning to make sense as we head into the home stretch of Stephen Colbert’s daily, weeklong “Lunch with Stephen” series. Think “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee,” but more like “Comedian in Plaid Incriminating Lunchmates of Class A Felonies.”

The official “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” website is releasing one video each day this week in which CBS’s new late-night host shows up at your job for a brown-bag rendezvous. It’s very important to begin with Monday’s lunch (above) because, unlike a late-night talk show, these episodes don’t stand alone. Or … sit at the table alone.

Also, see Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s lunch below:

If “Lunch with Stephen” doesn’t quench your appetite for Colbert, listen to him sit down with his new band leader Jon Batiste and co-executive producer/writer Barry Julien.

Sleep the Single Most Important Determinant in Predicting Longevity

2015-06-25-1435224529-7585081-sleeping_woman.jpg

The most basic change we can make in redefining Third Metric success in our lives has to do with our relationship to sleep and the sleep environment.

Healthy Sleep has been empirically proven to be the single most important determinant in predicting longevity, more important than diet, exercise, or heredity.

William C. Dement, founder of the Sleep Research Center at Stanford University, the world’s first sleep laboratory, and part of the team which first identified the different stages of sleep.

Sleep an Important Aspect of our Health

Supporting a Better Sleep

At least a third of us don’t sleep well. Most people wake up tired and the tiredness lasts throughout the day. However, sleep is an essential physiological function; a key research concept is that of Till Roenneberg social jetlag — the difference between when our internal body clock wants us to get up in the morning versus when we are forced out of bed by our alarm clock.

Sleep underpins all aspects of our health; it is when our bodies are designed to recover from the stresses of the day before, and to prepare for the stresses of the day ahead. Poor sleep can lead to an increase in the chronic stress response and thus a reduction in the immune function and further consequences to almost every aspect of our health and wellbeing.

Rested sleep is not just about how many hours we sleep, but also about quality of sleep, and a significant part of the quality is about the sleep environment.

Sleep Environment

Modern advances in sleep research using infrared and magnetic technology have made possible the creation of the optimal sleep environment. The elements of the Kenko Naturest Sleep System are designed to work in harmony together to cocoon you in an advanced, adaptive, sleeping environment, to create the best chance of the highest quality of sleep, the feeling of sleeping in nature in our own homes, and to help achieve the level of sleep for your mind and body to function not just adequately, but with energy and vitality.

When choosing a bed, most people only really give thought to the apparent comfort of the mattress. However, in order to offer the highest quality sleep – and adequate rest and recovery – there are many considerations that need to be resolved in the sleep environment. These include: physical comfort, supportive thermal environment with moisture control, ventilation stimulation, hygiene and energetic environment all designed to support the highest quality sleep.

The Kenko Sleep System> optimizes each of these different factors for each individual, even if they share a bed with a partner who might have significantly different requirements at any one time.

Additional Sleep Tips From the Experts Consulted in Thrive

• Make your bedroom darker and keep it cool.
• Practice deep breathing before bed.
• Take a warm bath before bed.
• Exercise or at least walk every day.
• Banish all LCD screens (laptops, tablets, smartphones, TV) at night.
• Cut down on coffee after 2 pm and avoid alcohol right before bedtime to give the body time to metabolize it.

Creating Our Personal Sleep Revolution

Creating a healthier, happier life doesn’t need to be complicated. By simply incorporating the Kenko Naturest Sleep System into our bed and adding the sleep tips suggested we will begin to create a revolution in our culture, our thinking, our workplaces, and our lives.

The Most Iconic Costume From Grease Is Headed to Auction

Olivia Newton-John just let it slip that her most iconic outfit from Grease will hit the auction block sometime soon. The actress told US Weekly that she has plans to auction her “leather ensemble” in order to raise funds for the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre, based in Melbourne, Australia.

grease-carnival-scene-costumes-sandy-black-leggings

There’s no way that the costume she’s referring to isn’t the super-sexy leggings and off-the-shoulder top she wore to reveal her bad-girl side to Danny at the graduation carnival, right? The pants were so tight that she reportedly had to be sewn into them before filming; after, she took them as a parting gift.

Newton-John’s talked about a desire to sell off the pants to raise funds for her charity before, telling Oprah about her intention while bringing the skinnies along for a show visit back in 2011.

Jilted Bride Penned The World’s Most Depressing eBay Listing

Wedding dresses for sale on eBay are a dime a dozen. But this listing is different — this woman’s dress has a sob story to tell.

“Rejected wedding dress seeks lasting love and holy matrimony,” a UK listing that went up earlier this week reads. From there, the dress takes the reins and spins its sad, sad tale.

ebay

“I was supposed to be worn at City Hall in New York,” the size 8 ivory lace Diane von Furstenberg number says. “I was going to be the main attraction of a 60s wedding theme. I was going to be low-key, but elegant (I still am, for that matter).”

But then the owner and her Brooklyn-based hubby-to-be ended their relationship — and things began looking pretty dismal for the dress. “She kept me in the box. Because she couldn’t bear to look at me. I am a constant reminder to her of what could have been. So she wants to sell me.”

Oof, you’re killing us, little DVF dress.

According to Metro, the would-be-bride behind the listing is a 30-year-old British woman who wishes to remain unnamed. Read her ad in its holy-God-that’s-depressing entirety below:

I was supposed to be worn at City Hall in New York.

I was going to be the main attraction of a 60s wedding theme.

I was going to be low-key, but elegant (I still am, for that matter).

I was going to complement a 60s updo, nude courts and a bouquet of Lily of the Valley.

When my owner put on a dress just like me in Selfridges, she knew I was the one so she ordered me online and had me delivered to her husband-to-be in Brooklyn.

I’m not over the top, nor am I too dressed down, and she thought she could perhaps wear me to other occasions in the future.

She thought I was a dress she could look back on and smile, not cringe at fashion faux pas (she was right).

When I arrived, she kept me sealed in my box so nothing could ruin me.

Then they split up.

And she kept me in the box.

Because she couldn’t bear to look at me.

I am a constant reminder to her of what could have been.

So she wants to sell me.

Not necessarily to a bride, but to anyone looking to give me the home I deserve.

A home where I’ll get worn and admired and dry-cleaned (as and when necessary).

She can’t take me back to DVF because they no longer stock me.

I’m limited edition, if you like.

And the first time I have been taken out of my box is for these photos.

Because who’s going to buy a dress based on a picture of a box?

I can’t wait to be worn by you (and to see the back of my cardboard confines once and for all).

Love,
Zarita (in Ivory).
xx

Kate Middleton Is Not the Most Impressive Royal Outfit Re-Wearer

Princess Anne, daughter of Queen Elizabeth and sister to Prince Charles, just proved she has some serious fashion mettle. At Royal Ascot yesterday, the princess wore a mustard yellow coat and matching hat the world has seen her in before—30 years ago!

princess-anne-yellow-coat-dress-royal-ascot-2015

The first time the princess wore the outfit was at the Trooping of the Colour in 1980, the same event that happened this weekend. In the older pic, below, it appears that Anne has on a different hat and brooch, but other than that, it’s a nearly identical outfit (which makes you wonder how meticulously the royals store their clothes).

princess-anne-mustard-coat-trooping-colours-1980

No, one of those adorable little boys isn’t Prince William. From L to R: the Duchess of Kent, the Queen Mother, Prince Edward, Princess Anne, Princess Alexandra, and the Duchess of Gloucester. The little boy pointing at the crowd is Anne’s son Peter.

While Princess Anne’s outfit re-wearing capabilities surely put any other royal to shame, there’s no denying Kate Middleton‘s becoming a pro at it too. Beyond that, the Kate effect has fans buying outfits she wears in unprecedented numbers (though, in fairness, it’s likely because earlier generations wore mostly custom creations).

The striped navy-and-white top Kate wore to watch polo with Prince George this weekend? Three-month waiting list.

And if that wasn’t enough to make you wish you were in her shoes, Bihr speaks multiple languages, has lived in Tokyo, Paris, Los Angeles, and New York, holds degrees in both neuroscience and pattern-making. Here, she gives us the scoop on what she wears to work.

Test Market

On a work day, I try to wear mostly Steven Alan because it’s good for me to wear what we’ve made; if we need to improve something or if something’s not working great, then I know it. I love to wear a big Steven Alan shirt — I usually get something a bit oversize. So I’ll wear a men’s extra-large reverse seam in white, with a pair of jeans we’ve made. I also have a lot of old Levi’s because I collect a lot of denim. I love a 501, but I like to buy a big men’s size and then cut the legs so they’re kind of wide and cropped. I go to a lot of vintage stores to hunt for them; when I lived in Paris I went every weekend to look at the flea markets. I’m also a big vintage eyewear collector and have really loved designing the Steven Alan Optical collection.

On my feet, I usually have sneakers or oxfords. Or like, a penny loafer. My whole team knows I’m addicted to these Japanese high tops called Shoes Like Pottery. I wear them constantly, year round. I don’t want to be boring, but I always look the same! Even if there’s a corporate event or I have to make a presentation, I always look the same. I try to stay very consistent and have been very consistent for a long time. I’ve always worn a lot of jumpsuits–whatever brand I go to, I make jumpsuits for them. They’re kind of great because they’re so versatile. You can even tie the sleeves at the waist and they make really great pants that way. I have a nice collection of vintage jumpsuits, some from the Yves Saint Laurent Safari collection, and I’ll wear those tied at the waist or zip them up and belt them. And if I’m wearing a jumpsuit like that I might add a little heeled sandal. Maryam Nassir Zadeh makes beautiful shoes. If I do go to a party and I feel like wearing something a little bit different I’ll put on sandals from Maryam. One of my best friends, Mona, designs A Détacher and she makes really beautiful skirts and dresses. I recently bought an indigo skirt/culotte thing from her. It’s the perfect length and so good for summer parties.

Dress for the Seasons

When the weather is this hot and humid, I love to wear linen and cotton poplin. We have these really great cotton poplin wide trousers from Steven Alan called the Picnic Pant. When you wear a wide-leg trouser like that, it’s nice to wear something small on top. You can’t wear something too big, or else you look like a tent. It’s also a great pant to wear with a linen T-shirt.

In the fall, I’m usually in a suit. I’ll wear a suit jacket and a pair of trousers, with a T-shirt and sneakers. I have a few different jacket styles that I really like–one is a schoolboy that’s a bit smaller; The Row makes a really nice one every year. And then I like a boyfriend notched lapel in tropical wool; it’s actually the first jacket I made for Steven Alan when I joined the company and it’s still my go-to. I also always love to have a peak lapel double-breasted blazer. I think the key to pulling off a suit is–well, first of all you just really have to find the right suit for you. But then you also have to have a more casual element in your accessories or what you’re wearing the suit with, like a T-shirt and sneakers.

Quality Control

When I’m shopping for myself, I always look at the finishing of the garment. I’m looking on the inside, not just the outside, examining the fabric, rubbing it on my neck and doing all the crazy things that designers do. You want to make sure there’s a clean finish–basically, that you don’t see all this thread wrapped around the seam–so that it doesn’t look like things are going to snag. It’s good to pay attention to these kinds of things, because they’re going to dictate the longevity of the garment. And really touch the fabric. Customers aren’t stupid, they know when they’re feeling good fabric. This is why we choose to use really good fabric at Steven Alan, because our customers are smart. They know they’re not getting garbage from us. That’s one thing I’m really proud of: There’s no room for poor quality. I’m really proud to say that more than 90 percent of the things I make are made in New York. And if it’s not made here, it’s made at the best factory in Japan.

Now You Can Find the Perfect Flip-Flops Based on the Emoji You Use the Most

Looking for a way to turn your social media habits into actionable shopping advice? Well, Old Navy is now offering one idea in the form of emoodji.com, a site that not only tells you which emojis you use the most but also recommends the perfect flip-flop and beach vacation based on that data.

emoodji-nikki

Here’s how it works: Enter your Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook handle, and the site instantly calculates your most-used emoji. Cool, right?

The site then guesses your mood based on that particularly emoji—say, the dancing woman in a red dress or the one with hearts for eyes—takes you to a mood board of results, made up of the perfect flip-flop color and beach vacation. (If you share the board, you’re also entered for a chance to win the dream getaway.)

Even if you don’t win, the fun doesn’t stop with knowing what emoji you use most—you can enter anyone’s social handles—from your friends to, say, Beyonce—to see what they use most as well!

emoodji-drake

In an exclusive survey, Old Navy unearthed a slew of interesting data around emojis: the top-used emojis, for example, are the tongue sticking out, crying faces, thumbs-up, heart eyes (a personal favorite) and, unsurprisingly, poop. Forty-six percent of millennials apparently use emojis daily and 28 percent of emoji users feel it’s very important to have a taco emoji (we concur).

When asked to describe themselves as an emoji, 22 percent of people said they would use the cool-glasses emoji, 27 percent would describe themselves as the emoji with its tongue sticking out, and—get this—only 7 percent describe themselves as the dancing lady in a red dress.

The Six-Figure Club: 6 of the Most Expensive Handbags Ever Sold at Auction Were Hermes Birkins

Prepare to rethink what splurging on accessories can really mean. The most expensive bag to sell at auction hit the chopping block at Christie’s last week, going for $ 221,844 at an auction in Hong Kong. It was a pink crocodile Hermès Birkin studded with diamonds—and it was sold to an unnamed bidder over the phone.

The idea of a handbag bringing in big money is nothing new. Before last week’s sale, here were the top sells—believe it or not six of the seven most expensive handbags ever sold at auction were Birkins.

Not a Birkin for $ 218,500 in 2011: A diamond and gold style previously owned by Elizabeth Taylor takes the honor as the only non Birkin to make the list. The details reported by WSJ are scant, but a flick through the 2011 auction catalog that previewed her jewelry (the section where the high-rolling bag was included) show both a golden clutch and a Fred Leighton elephant bag that was gifted to Taylor from Michael Jackson as a birthday present.

Birkin for $ 203,150 in 2015: Before Monday’s record-setting sale, this was the most expensive Birkin to sell at auction.

Birkin for $ 185,000 in 2014: Last fall the below Birkin, made of Himalayan Nilo Crocodile and including a total of 9.84 carats of diamonds, sold in Beverly Hills.

hermes-birkin-python-gold-diamond-bag

Birkin for $ 113,525 in 2011: A blue croc Birkin went at the same Dallas auction the the previous record-setter did.

Birkin for $ 95,000 in 2011: Also in Dallas: a red croc Birkin.

Birkin for $ 80,663 in 2011: A third Hermès Birkin made bank at the same Dallas sale.

In case you’re curious, the world’s most expensive handbag is thought to be Mouawad’s “1001 Nights” purse. The 18-carat-gold bag has 4,517 yellow, pink, and colorless diamonds, combining for an impressive 381.92 carats, and has been estimated at $ 3.8 million.

Now, come meet another (non-Birkin) bag that’s super luxe and super covetable:

An Insider’s Guide To Venice Reveals Meditative Moments In One Of The Wold’s Most Visited Cities

By Paolo Apice
Photo credits: ©Courtesy City of Venice.

One of the most visited cities in the world is changing before our eyes, swallowing up quarters and rethinking its dry land. If you’re visiting Expo in Milan, it’s also a great opportunity to visit nearby Venice and discover some of the city’s unsuspected sides.

venice1
The Cathedral and Bell tower of San Marco.

Discovering Venice
Decadent. Expensive. With little soul. And crowded. With tourists, obviously. These are the mixed blessings of the Venetians, if not of the tourists themselves, who in 2015, between Expo and Biennale, will number 30 million. There will be so many tourists, in fact, that the more than 500 tourist facilities on offer won’t be able to cope with demand. Described in this way, Venice is a stressful boat to board. On the contrary, it can be a relaxing surprise.

venice2
Gondole in the laguna.

Often the traveler looks for hidden, extraordinary places. In reality, the Serenissima should be savored day by day — nose in the air. For example, “There are in Venice three magical hidden places: one in Calle dell’Amor degli Amici, a second near to Ponte delle Maravegie, the third in Calle dei Marrani, near to San Geremia Ghetto Vecchio. When Venetians are tired of the authorities, they go in these three secret places and, opening the doors to be found at the end of those courtyards, they go forever in beautiful places and in other stories.” And so ends Favola di Venezia, the 25th of the adventures written by Hugo Pratt.

venice3
Venetian Ghetto.

Among these beautiful places, even non-believers recognize the salvation of the churches. They’re perfect for those moments in which you don’t know what you want and you need time with your thoughts. “And, damn, in silence. Increasingly more difficult today,” Hemingway loved to say, bewitched by the lagoon.

In meditative moments it would be enough to enter into the monumental space of the Benedetto Marcello Conservatory, in Campo Santo Stefano. You can close your eyes and listen to the sound of the musical instruments coming from the rehearsal rooms. It’s a feeling straight from a film.

venice4
Rialto Bridge.

At only five minutes walking distance from the station you arrive in the Cannaregio district, which is, like Castello, one of the most “red” districts: popular and populous. On crowded days, at a short walk from the Ponte delle Guglie, like a charm, you’ll find tranquillity. When Venetian ladies arrange to meet here, they specify “In front of Glamour” — a clothing shop that has become a reference point even for tourists. Yes, in Venice directions always make a reference to a business. To ask for the Ponte San Giovanni Grisostomo doesn’t say much. But to ask for the Ponte dei Giocattoli (as a result of the craft that was practised there), says everything. It’s better to conform.

Walking along Cannaregio, passing through the Jewish ghetto, you can go along the sidewalk of the Ormesini and the Misericordia. There are lots of small bars to have an aperitif at or to stop and have a chat. If you stay here, in the morning go for breakfast to Pitteri, in Strada Nuova. Deborah and Barbara know everyone by name and the regulars will already be listening to Radio Venezia. Leaving, give a small offering to Ciccio Marea, the most photographed tramp in the world, who in the summer stretches out on the ground to sunbathe.

Next, take a ferry to Santa Sofia and a gondola to get to Rialto. In one of the most famous markets on the planet, the seagulls put on a show, fluttering around the fish stalls. As an alternative to a gondola, take the water bus from Cà d’Oro to Rialto Mercato: the journey is interesting when the boat is full. You can hear the Venetians swearing — they want it for themselves, with no tourists. The monologues on the comedy duo Carlo and Giorgio, the references to the site “venessia.com,” and the remarks on local habits and customs are all educational.

venice5
Ca’ Foscari.

Skipping the main route from Rialto to San Marco, and setting off in the direction of the Biennale, you arrive in Via Garibaldi: the gateway to the Castello district. Around you washing is hung everywhere. Mothers with their hair dyed improbable colors chase shouting children who often answer to Maicol, Chevin… Bars and restaurants of a dubious appearance sport fake formica, East German style. In the distance a flea market floats on the boats.

Very often whoever goes to the Biennale believes that this is all a part of it, a display. But also in Piazza San Marco there is something new to discover. At the entrance to the church, among the attendants, is Lauro. In his life he has done other things. He was one of the last teachers of the art of Venetian jewelry-making. Then one day he saw the Virgin Mary. Just like that, his life changed. You can tell him about your wish to visit the San Francesco in the Desert convent. In that case, wake up at dawn, for the life of the Franciscan brothers begins early. With a mentioned donation and polite requests, it’s even possible to spend a night in one of their small cells. It’s a mystical experience to then return to Venice, walking by night and only hearing one’s own footsteps. Return to the stench of the low tide, a calle sconta, the fish risotto in the La Madonna restaurant, to the Rialto bridge, and dinners with Tony at the Trattoria Storica, close to the Jesuits.

venice6
Aerial view of La Giudecca island.

Now we understand that in the last 20 years, the Serenissima has changed drastically. Irrespective of what people may say, it’s for the better. Silently, while extra large cruise ships and hotels with too many stars were making a racket, Venice became an enormous, singular historical center. Once upon a time, and not too long ago, the city had its suburbs in the lagoon (completely different to those on dry land, with their factories, refineries and dormitory towns). Some — Castello, the Baia del Re, Santa Marta, the island of Giudecca — were crowded and common, while others were in the shade of the real center, like Piazza San Marco, Rialto… “Long-neglected, poor, these areas ‘on the edge’ have returned to center stage thanks to urban renewal programs that recuperate buildings and spaces previously used for other things,” explains Francesco Bortoluzzi, the head of the municipality. (He, together with Michele Casarin and others, including Stefano Boeri, Massimiliano Fuksas, Aldo Cibic and Vittorio Gregotti, is contributing to an essay that will be published by Marsilio towards the end of June, dedicated to the urban transformation of the city.)

venice7andmain
Palazzo Ducale.

Two Cities And Water
Milan and Venice are united by Expo thanks to water and a large space in the shelter of the science technology park Vega at Porto Marghera. “Waters 2015 is the Venetian equivalent of Expo Milan, organized by Expo Venice,” explains Giuseppe Matiazzo, CEO of the organization. “Exhibitions, conventions, tasting sessions, public events, international initiatives for companies and research (amongst which the series of conventions on Planet Water): Expo offers six months to look at the relationship between water and environment, food, science, industry, society and free time.

Then there is “Oltrexpo,” which offers tourism, culture, a carefully selected welcome.” The area stretches over 50,000 square meters, overlooking the water and the car parks; the structure, by Michele De Lucchi, who designed Pavilion Zero at Expo Milan, has a display area of 14,000 square meters and will stay after Expo finishes as a site for trade fairs. And finally, there are the projects of Expo to Venice for discovering the lagoon off the beaten track — from Isole in Rete (in one fell swoop, the minor islands and the vegetable gardens of the Serenissima), to the tour of the Canottieri Cannaregio to grapple with Venetian rowing.

Bath & Body Works, your favorite middle school hangout, announced Friday that it would reintroduce six of its most iconic scents, just in time for summer.

Cucumber Melon, Country Apple, Juniper Breeze, Pearberry, Plumeria and White Tea & Ginger will be available in-stores and online from June 8 – July 5. As Phuong Ireland, Director of Brand Development for Bath & Body Works shared, customers “have amazing memories and stories of” these scents.

While the fancy new packaging is nice, it would be pretty exciting if the old bottles (which you can still purchase online!) came along with the great news.

The brand’s Instagram, which boasts a cool (as a cucumber melon) one million followers, proves that people are just as committed to the brand now as they were in the ’90s and early 2000s.

With the return of these six classic scents, which Ireland calls “iconic to the Bath & Body Works heritage and what we were known for for a long time,” it’s safe to say the delightfully overpowering smell of White Tea & Ginger Body Spray will soon be invading an office building near you.

Which scent are you most excited for? Check out some of our favorite Bath & Body Works memories and reactions below, and share yours in the comments!

“I was obsessed with the Cucumber Melon lotion — I would put it on before every middle school mixer/dance (I went to an all girls’ school, so our monthly mixers were the only time we got to socialize with boys). Cucumber Melon lotion, mascara, pink shiny lip gloss, brightly-colored polo, jean skirt, and flip flops — it was a uniform. There was a sad moment at some point in 8th grade when I realized I had over-exposed myself to the smell and didn’t like it anymore…” Hollis Miller, Associate Social Editor, Voices

“I went through many bottles of Cucumber Melon body splash in middle school (and yes, it was BODY SPLASH, not a normal term like body spray). It’s now indelibly associated with the bathrooms where we’d all change after gym class. Our school did not have showers. Thank God the fruity smell of Cucumber Melon mingled perfectly with our B.O.” Claire Fallon, Books Editor

“Going to the mall with just your friends was the first step towards independence in suburbia, and my earliest mall hangs always included stops at Bath & Body Works. I would consistently try out all the different scents and then inevitably settle on Cucumber Melon. Satisfying every damn time.” Emma Gray, Senior Editor, Women

“Ah, what better place to linger the mall as a teen after I had already stocked up on various pairs of Limited Too sweatpants with “SPOILED” written across the ass. (But that’s another thinkpiece for another day?) I remember feeling compelled to buy the Cucumber Melon hand sanitizer with the blue beads in it because all the cool, pretty teachers compulsively put it on after accidentally making skin to skin contact with any of us.” Lauren Zupkus, Associate Social Editor, Entertainment

“Juniper Breeze was my jam. I thought it spelled so good, but I think the sheer AMOUNT I put on might’ve made it a boy-repellent (or maybe that was just my bangs + braces combo).” Carly Ledbetter, Associate Lifestyle Editor

“Not to be a debbie downer, but I HATE(D) Cucumber Melon. I used to slather my hands with Juniper Breeze hand sanitizer in high school, though. And if you were in my group of friends, you gave each other mini bottles of lotion before Christmas break as gifts. #besties4lyfe” Taylor Trudon, Senior Editor, Young Voices

“There was a theory going around my tiny Catholic middle school that boys liked you better if you smelled like apple pie. (circa 2006-2010) To this day I believe that my Country Apple body lotion secured me my first boyfriend.” Mia Fermindoza, Photo Operations Assistant

“I was driving to the mall when I was 16. My guy friend found my car stash of Plumeria and started spraying it all over the car. I turned my head to yell at him, rolled into the car in front of me at the stoplight, then paid off the man for hitting his car with a check for $ 75 (all but a penny of all my babysitting money,) so my parents didn’t find out I’d crashed into someone.” Janie Campbell, Senior Editor, Miami

The Most Meaningful Careers Aren’t Always Blissful

2015-05-29-1432885971-6506740-WillWorkForBlissPicSmall.png

Like most millennials raised on the “world is your oyster” parental movement, I graduated college thinking that career would be one big party. Stepping off into not-so-adult adulthood with an empty bank account and a shoebox full of graduation cards, I might as well have tattooed Joseph Campbell’s words on my heart:

“Follow your bliss and the world will open doors where there were only walls.”

Naturally, starting my own life coaching business at 23 would be a fairy tale. I imagined my schedule book miraculously filling with “soul mate-like” clients and my PayPal retirement fund blossoming overnight. I had found my purpose, by golly — my bliss — which meant the success part should follow suit, right? Piece. Of. Cake.

Wrong. Love her as I may have, my business gave me no sympathy (and certainly no cake).

My lovely purpose gave zero hoots about: the post-recession economy, my student loans, my spells of inspiration drought, nor my waves of childlike ambiguity. Like a painfully quiet spectator, she watched with indifference as I could barely pay my bills. As I reached for the discounter shampoo in the toiletry aisle, my purpose couldn’t even be bothered about my increasingly frizzy hair.

Nothing had ever felt so right and yet boy did I ever want to shake that Joseph Campbell like a prophetic rag doll. “I’m living my calling, Joseph… but where’s the flippin’ bliss?”

My purpose gave only the rudest of silence.

The Myth of Bliss
These days, I think bliss-following should probably come with a more accurate disclaimer:

“So you want a career that flutters your heart and floods your veins with pride like golden honey? Follow away! Side-effects may include: depression, anxiety, chronic fatigue, insomnia, weight loss, weight gain, mania, vitamin D deficiency, cystic acne, shame and embarrassment, loneliness, brain fog, carpal tunnel syndrome, back pain, relationship issues, hair challenges, identity crisis, and/or extreme poverty.”

Don’t get me wrong. I’m still “Team Bliss'” biggest cheerleader, it’s just that everyone left out the second half of the story. The part that tells us that bliss is like lusting after the most beautiful woman in the room who just so happens to be challenging and cruel and — oh yeah, totally out of your league.

Because despite what all of those endearing graduation cards might have said, passion-chasing was not a foxtrot down a hall of open doors. If only I had known that following my bliss would force me to become exactly what I’m capable of…

Growing Pains
There’s this assumption in many a self-help circle that if following your bliss is messy, then you must be doing something wrong. That when we are living the “right life” it should feel fantastic. And look like over-night success. And smell like fresh-cut roses on a Sunday afternoon (not “I haven’t showered in two days because entrepreneurship is hard” smell). Some would even say that when we are living our authentic mission — “the life we were born for” — we should attract abundance and happiness and all kinds of karmic loveliness. My generation in particular is known for that sort of “stubborn optimism” that success will eventually find us.

It turns out I’m not entitled to a comfortable life. It turns out, bliss or not, the universe doesn’t owe me riches or happiness (not even life! — I learned, after an earth-shattering, near-death experience). The only thing I am entitled to is the opportunity to become the person I came here to be. And while that might sound like a pretty lame birthday present from life, I’ve come to see it as the most beautiful gift of all.

Maybe purposeful work is supposed to be tough. Maybe “hard” doesn’t always mean you’re on the wrong path, but is sometimes a sign you’re on the best path. Maybe you don’t just develop a career… maybe the greatest career will develop you. We’re not just chasing job titles, salaries, or recognition, we are growing — growing into the people capable of mastering our dreams. Into the truest, happiest, most brilliant version of ourselves. Into professionals: people who can sustain the prizes we crave and who can love themselves and love their work with their whole darn hearts. That stuff ain’t pretty.

Career is Hard, Generation Y
I remember my 23-year-old self — already defeated by career-building, reading HuffPost in her PJs at 3 p.m. on a Monday, contemplating the existential woes we millennials call “quarter-life crisis” — and I wish that I could tell her a “career-knight in shining armor” isn’t coming.

“Don’t wait for your dream job to appear on Monster.com. Don’t pray to be discovered by a publisher or validated by ‘likes’ or for the magic SEO Gods to deliver your golden opportunities. You will never have the perfect resume or bio. You will never be good enough or smart enough or ready enough to pick up the phone. It will never be the ‘just right’ time to quit the job or start the blog or go get your booty out there.”

Today I know your purpose is not your savior. It knows exactly what you’re capable of and would expect nothing less. Your purpose will let you fail — often publicly, sometimes miserably — until you learn to see your own strength. Your purpose will make you sit and stew and brew in those excuses until you see the mind’s folly, until you see your own truth.

Because your purpose wants you to have your dreams, but only like the parent who lets you ride your bike solo before you think you’re ready. Who doesn’t always let you win. Who sometimes makes you wait your turn. Who knows that a little broken heart today will let you love even bigger tomorrow.

Because It’s Worth It
Today, I love my career with every ounce of my being because it broke my heart (a million plus one times).

Hammering nail after nail into that foundation until the day those few lousy boards became a house. (Became a home. Became a village.)

Until the day I took a chance on myself. (Until the day they took a chance on me.)

Until the day my quiet spark became two. (Became three. Became a blaze.)

Until the day the person I thought I knew became the person I had always wanted to know.

Yep, that must be the real miracle, Joseph Campbell. You were right all along: bliss hand-delivered me opportunity after opportunity — to become my own hero.

So cue the panic attacks. Don’t forget the rejection letters, sweaty palms, and the very worst of hair days. Just give me a real 21st century career, please: true and hard, but so very beautiful.

Kanye West Gave The Most Kanye West Graduation Speech Ever To Fashion Students

Here’s a message to all the celebs currently giving graduation speeches: he’s gonna let you finish, but Kanye West just gave one of the best graduation speeches of all time. Well, he gave the most Kanye West graduation speech, anyway.

West made an appearance at the Los Angeles Trade-Technical College’s Gold Thimble Fashion Show on Friday and reportedly addressed the graduating class, saying, “Usually, when you’re the absolute best, you get hated on the most.” Preach, Kanye!

After an issue with the paparazzi in 2013, West was sentenced to some community service and fulfilled his hours by teaching at the school in 2014. Though all his hours are up, he still decided to make the trip for the show, giving a speech and even smiling.

Yeah, we saw that, Mr. West.

Happy: Simple Steps to Get the Most Out of Life (Unabridged)

Happy: Simple Steps to Get the Most Out of Life (Unabridged)

Ian Smith has inspired millions to lose weight—through his effective and best-selling diet books, The Fat Smash Diet, Extreme Fat Smash Diet, and The 4-Day Diet; through his outreach work on State Farm’s 50 Million Pound Challenge; and through his numerous television and radio appearances and speaking engagements throughout the United States.

In counseling and motivating dieters—and in observing his feelings about his own life – Smith learned that while achieving hard-fought and worthy goals can help make a person happy, even these real and measurable achievements aren’t what makes happiness stick. In Happy, he’s discovered the keys to enduring contentment.

Happy simply and effectively explains how anyone can reach their own personal high-water mark of positive feelings. It’s not euphoria Smith is after. He understands and explains the difference between the too-brief rush that comes from getting something you’ve wanted instead of becoming someone you want to be. In Happy, Smith motivates listeners to understand the behaviors and mind-sets that work and last, including:

  • How to be optimistic
  • Why optimism and realism are not opposites
  • How to get outside yourself
  • The importance of family and community
  • Why involvement leads to contentment
  • Shedding the treadmill mentality of getting and spending
  • Tapping the power of simple pleasures
  • How to be, not just to do
  • Why changing from a scowl to a smile can have a deep impact
  • Mastering modern life (from competition to technology) to live in the moment
  • How to alter your happiness set point

A life-changing book from one of America’s most compelling and trusted voices, Happy delivers what its title promises.

8 Steps to Truly Love Yourself — and Why It’s the Most Selfless Thing You Can Do

There seems to be a very beautiful trend taking shape that I am completely devoted to: It is starting to be popular to “be loving.” Over the last few years, health, spiritual practices and taking care of mother earth are starting to be considered a hip thing — rather than a strange “hippie” thing. I am delighted by how this is reflected in the overall consciousness of our planet: We are starting to truly care about ourselves. When I started studying yoga about ten years ago the concept of ahimsa — non-harming — was still rather unknown in mainstream society. Meditation, yoga, vegetarianism, conscious consumerism, recycling, all those trends have really only been taking root in the last few years. Of course there are issues, and they need to be addressed. But what matters is the shift that we see happening on a global scale.

What does this tell us about the individuals who make up our societies? It simply means we are starting to genuinely love ourselves more. I know we still have some work to do, but we are on the way. And as on every path, the important thing is: Keep going! Keep loving yourself! Keep pampering yourself and noticing! Keep noticing what is happening around you and how our society and the way we treat our earth is changing. Why? Because taking care of yourself, loving yourself, living your purpose will lift the entire planet.

1. Serve the world by living your purpose

What is your soul’s deepest desire? What is your biggest dream for your own life? Chances are that it’s not a 9-5 desk job. However, when first pondering this question, your dreams might seem selfish. Start by seeking out those people who celebrate you being big. In most modern societies, this isn’t a common behavior (at least not yet) and you’ll need a bit of creativity to make it work and yes, there will be a few lonely moments. But the feeling of your soul smiling is priceless. And once you experienced this feeling, it is hard to ever go back.

Consider this powerful quote by Marianne Williamson:

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small does not serve the world.
There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.
We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

2. Empower people by being confident

It ties in with the above point. It’s easier to reduce yourself to a being worthy of compassion. People will feel your misery and will try to help you. But on the contrary, how inspiring is it to be around somebody who is genuinely confident? It really makes you feel that you can do it too, right?

3. Stop the gossip. Stop the complaints.

Complaining is a negative energy that locks us into a certain way of thinking. When we look for the negative in others we zoom in on exactly that — the negative surrounding us. Once we shift our radar towards what inspires us in others we are instead looking for connection, growth, love, joy — short, uplifting energies. And those are exactly the qualities we will then be able to nurture in our own lives. It takes time and practice to achieve this shift. The road might be bumpy and you might have to redirect some conversations when you first start practicing. But it will get easier and easier, until it turns from a practice into your second nature!

4. Balance of gentleness and firmness

I struggled with anorexia in my teenage years. All through my 20s I learned to nurture my body, and myself, slowly learning to be gentle with myself. My studies of self-development, yoga and Vedanta gave me an increased feeling of being complete in myself. Yet, there was still that nagging negative voice that would keep coming up, a voice that felt so much more powerful than my other, gentle voice. It was only when my best friend and coach Kat Dawes from Nowism recommended to try out a fierce voice whenever I judged myself that I achieved the crucial shift. This practice really helped me to eliminate that last bit I just didn’t quite seem to get rid of. Now when my inner voice criticizes myself I know how to be fierce and redirect my thoughts with firmness.

The best thing you can do for yourself is finding that balance for yourself: Find out when you need to give yourself a kick, but also when you need to give yourself a big hug and a bubble bath.

5. Keep promises made to yourself

When you make a promise to yourself KEEP IT! Honor your own word to yourself, whether that is to take a break, go on a holiday, go to a yoga class, eat more healthily, or go to bed early. Imagine what your friend would say if you’d let her down as many times as you let down yourself. To make things easier, find yourself an “accountability buddy.” Tell each other the things you have planned to nurture yourself — and check in with each other once a week to see how you are doing.

6. Nourish and celebrate yourself

Having been completely absorbed in the yogic world for years, I noticed a tendency to discard materialism as something entirely negative. However, I acknowledged to myself how much I love being a girl sometimes, including all those little pretty things such as make-up, clothes and spa treatments. But instead of drawing negative energy out of this “attachment,” I achieved a huge internal shift: I started treating those things as a personal act of celebrating my femininity, as an act of gratitude for having been given a healthy body. It’s a ceremony to give thanks for the blessings in my life and for having received this life force, a force that needs to be nurtured. You need to be grateful for receiving it and honor it by living your highest purpose.
Therefore, allow yourself to nourish yourself — no matter if that means going to the gym, getting a pedicure or buying new shoes — do it with a huge smile on your face.

Living in Bali has been a huge inspiration for me in that regard — the women in Bali dress up in the most beautiful ways for their ceremonies to go to the temples or to give daily offerings. And then they change into leggings and flip-flops to go to work. It is such a sweet symbol of dressing up – for the divine, not to impress others. I went through an interesting process of reconciling my identity of being a designer with the role of a business woman. I had to truly embrace the fact that my designs are an expression of the divine energy inside me and that sharing this energy with the world is my gift to uplift others. We need to embrace the fact that we are material bodies living in a material world. Make your life a celebration of the wonderful world around you, every moment, every day!

7. Have integrity with the people who surround you

One of my favorite books is The 4 Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. The first agreement is, “Be impeccable with your word.” There is such depth in this agreement. If we make a promise to ourselves to always be true to ourselves we start having quality control in the most genuine way. We speak with love. There are certain attitudes and behaviors we don’t accept. And by doing so, we actually serve humanity. There are so many people out there — it is totally fine to not open up to all of them. But we can find ways to be respectful and friendly in all situations.
However, if somebody weighs you down by their continuous negativity it’s fine to set boundaries. It is just as much of an inspiration to watch somebody who has healthy boundaries, as it is to watch somebody to be all-embracing love. Trust your intuition. Trust your gut.

8. Step by step towards your soul’s alignment — don’t ever think you have more time

Do it now! Take a little step at a time — but don’t put it off. Take baby steps in the right direction, even if it’s just a little today, and a little tomorrow. Honored to be walking right there with you!

The field of positive psychology has exploded in growth since its inception in 1998, dramatically increasing our understanding of human flourishing. We now know more than ever about what makes us happy, how we can spread happiness socially and geographically, and how happiness affects our physical and mental health.

But it’s just the beginning. In the next decade, we’re likely to see not only a greater understanding of positive emotions, but also the application of this research on a practical level to improve well-being on a global scale.

“Positive psychology has just scratched at the surface of the benefits of topics like meditation, gratitude and forgiveness,” Emma Seppala, Ph.D., a positive psychologist at Stanford and associate director of Stanford University’s Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education, told The Huffington Post in an email. “The next decade of research will dive deep into these topics.”

Already, this burgeoning research offers valuable tools for each one of us to bring more joy into our own lives and the lives of others. In honor of HuffPost’s 10th anniversary, here are eight scientific findings about happiness from the past decade — and reasons why we’ll be happier in the future, too.

happiness

1. We get happier as we get older.
Although we tend to focus on the downsides of aging, a robust body of research suggests we’ve got a lot to look forward to as we get older. One survey conducted in 2013 found 23 and 69 to be life’s two happiest ages. Other data suggests that after happiness levels drop around mid-life, they tend to increase steadily into old age. One conducted by Duke University researchers in 2006 found that 70-year-olds tended to rate themselves as being happier than 30-year-olds did.

Why? Greater appreciations for life’s little triumphs and acceptance of life’s trials likely play a role, as well as lower stress levels.

“As we age, we have the opportunity to accept who we are, instead of focusing on who we feel we need to become,” psychoanalyst Ken Eisold wrote in Psychology Today. “We relax into being ourselves.”

“As we age… we relax into being ourselves.”

2. You can rewire your brain for happiness.
One of the most amazing things about the human brain is neuroplasticity — the brain’s capacity to rewire itself in response to new experiences.

We can actually wire our brains for happiness by focusing our attention on positive experiences and emotions, says neuropsychologist Rick Hanson, author of Hardwiring Happiness: The New Brain Science of Contentment, Calm, and Confidence. When you linger on a positive experience, it becomes encoded in your neural chemistry. Linger on many of these experiences, and the connections become strengthened over time and easier to retrieve.

“The longer the neurons fire, the more of them that fire, and the more intensely they fire, the more they’re going to wire that inner strength –- that happiness, gratitude, feeling confident, feeling successful, feeling loved and lovable,” Hanson told HuffPost in 2013.

3. Happy mind, healthy body.
More and more science is revealing the depth of our mind-body connection. We know now that cultivating a positive state of mind isn’t just good for your mental health — it can also keep your body healthy and protect you from disease.

Positive emotions have been shown to boost immune system functioning, positively alter gene expression, improve sleep quality and reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, among other physical health benefits.

4. Social connection is key.
Human beings are social creatures, and the quality of our relationships is inextricably linked with our physical and mental well-being.

“Over a given period, people who have strong ties to family, friends, or coworkers have a 50 percent greater chance of outliving those with fewer social connections,” CNN medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta wrote last year. “If our relationships can have such an effect on our overall health, why don’t we prioritize spending time with the people around us as much as we do exercising and eating right?”

5. We can thrive in the face of life’s challenges.
The field of post-traumatic growth — which investigates how people not only survive but come to thrive in the wake of adversity — is one of the most exciting in all of psychology right now, says Dr. Scott Barry Kaufman, a psychologist at the University of Pennsylvania.

“I believe we need to move beyond positive emotions and incorporate trauma and anxiety, and investigate how these ‘negative’ emotions can lead to greater personal growth and well-being,” Kaufman told The Huffington Post in an email.

6. We’re happier when we’re helping others.
Being kind to others is a fast track to happiness. Volunteering makes people happier and boosts their longevity, according to a 2013 review of studies from the University of Exeter.

Helping others may also be an effective way to combat feelings of disconnection in our increasingly online lives.

“Too much use of technology can actually isolate us and make us lonelier,” Kaufman told The Huffington Post. “Also, generations appear to be getting more and more narcissistic and self-focused, and we know that’s not conducive to well-being. I think we will only be happier in the future if we can figure out a way to harness new technologies for the benefit of helping others.”

An added benefit? Kindness is contagious.

7. Lasting happiness is born of purpose.
“Happiness cannot be pursued; it must ensue,” Austrian psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl wrote in his 1946 manifesto Man’s Search for Meaning. “One must have a reason to ‘be happy.'”

In recent years, psychologists have demonstrated what Frankl long held to be true: Happiness doesn’t just come from chasing pleasure or positive experiences. As mounting research has demonstrated, sustainable happiness (and good health) comes from having a deep sense of purpose in life.

“One must have a reason to ‘be happy.'”

Studies have shown that a sense of purpose and meaning increases well-being and life satisfaction, boosts self-esteem and can even ward off depression.

8. Mindfulness is a gateway to happiness.
You don’t have to be a veteran yogi or a meditating monk to make yourself at least “10 percent happier,” as ABC anchor Dan Harris says, through a mindfulness practice. Studies have shown that meditation boosts positive feelings and psychological well-being, in addition to warding off stress, depression and anxiety.

“Research suggests that we are happiest in the present,” Seppala told HuffPost. “We will be happier in the future, if we learn to be present!”

What Type of Jewelry Is Most Popular in Your Part of the Country?

We talk a lot about national (and international) trends, but what about the more minute, localized ones? Different zip codes in the U.S. adopt their own uniforms, and it’s totally obvious when you take a stroll around the local mall. Since flying city to city would take a while (and is tough on the budget), we took luxury consignment site The Real Real up on an offer to peek at its shopping numbers, broken down by big American markets.

statement-necklaces-fashion-week

The Midwest
Judging by shoppers in areas like Chicago, this is a part of the country that really likes things simple, classic, and sophisticated. Think statement studs and bracelets you can still wear every day, plus watches that add a final bit of polish.
[Top 3 sellers: Hermès enamel bracelets, Chanel earrings, Cartier watches.]

The Northeast
Typically quick to endorse trends, the Northeastern shopper fills her e-cart with both boundary-pushing, bold numbers and longtime classics. It speaks to a switch-it-up sensibility, by which ladies wear a conversation-starter one day and bust out chic basics the next.
[Top 3 sellers: Eddie Borgo necklaces, Cartier ‘Love’ bracelets, Tiffany & Co. Elsa Peretti necklaces.]

Southern California
Flashy ladies in SoCal love glamour, and it shows in the jewelry they regularly snap up. When you study the top three sellers, it’s also clear that the Rachel Zoe effect is still in play, with everyday items accented by long necklaces that evoke a modern boho feel.
[Top 3 sellers: Rolex watches, diamond necklaces, statement necklaces.]

The Pacific Northwest
The Real Real team described its shoppers in San Francisco and beyond as loving “subtle luxury,” and it’s easy to see why. An untrained eye might not notice anything special about the thin necklaces and bracelets they pull on, but fashionphiles will see little tweaks that make the outfit.
[Top 3 sellers: Saint Laurent necklaces, Hermès woven bracelets, Van Cleef & Arpels Alhambra necklaces.]

The South
Residents of states like Texas tend to be traditionalists when it comes to accessorizing, snapping up classics that will fit just as well in jewelry boxes decades in the future. Instead of necklaces and earrings done in of-the-moment shades or accents (like neon gems or fringed suede), they’re all about classic diamonds.
[Top 3 sellers: diamond necklaces, David Yurman cable bracelets, Rolex watches.]

Why FKA Twigs Is The Most Artful Performer In Pop Music

fka twigs congregata

While some may simply know FKA Twigs as the future Mrs. Robert Pattinson (reportedly), the bug-eyed, braided figure from her music videos or an unlikely style icon, she’s far more than any of those labels combined.

The 27-year-old British artist, born Tahliah Barnett, played three special shows this week at the sweltering warehouse-turned-venue Brooklyn Hangar, the last of which wouldn’t have happened had it not been for her overwhelming fan base. The first two nights of FKA Twigs’ “Congregata” show, presented by the Red Bull Music Academy Festival, sold out, thus prompting a third show, which also sold out.

“The name is ‘Congregata’ and it means ‘coming together’ in Latin, and this is a coming together of my friends,” FKA Twigs said at the end of the Tuesday-night show, her gentle voice breaking through the uproarious applause and “Yass!” screams from the crowd when it could. But FKA Twigs’ show is also a thrilling display of the marriage between various dance styles and visual aesthetics. Throughout the nearly two-hour show, one feels like they’re witnessing a Cirque du Soleil show transformed into a ballroom drag celebration blended with moving interpretive dance set to a live violinist.

fka twigs congregata

Photo credit: Drew Gurian/Maria Jose Govea/Red Bull

Yet what grounds this eclectic blend of voguing, contortion, acrobatics and performative dance is the moody, throbbing sound of FKA Twigs’ music. Performing songs from “EP2” and last year’s acclaimed “LP1,” with everything from “Two Weeks” to “Water Me” to “Papi Pacify,” FKA Twigs balanced the night’s energetic performances with her elegiac vocals (which, as we’ve said before, basically sound like sex).

fka twigs

At one point, FKA Twigs took to the stage sans dancers to sing “Lights On,” her voice alternating between the chorus and background vocals, as if wavering between restraint and vulnerability. Few performers have the ability to switch between melancholic hip thrusts and extravagant krumping.

The real treat of the night came when FKA Twigs danced to a rendition of Madonna’s “Vogue” — only to be interrupted by New York’s finest voguers. Derek Auguste, Alex Cephus, Javier Ninja of House of Ninja, Dashaun “Evisu” Wesley, Benjamin Milan of House of Milan and Leiomy Mizrahi of House of Mizrahi took over the stage with a full-on voguing tutorial that almost literally brought the house down, as remnants from the warehouse’s wooden ceiling rained down on the crowd from the pounding bass.

And still, FKA Twigs knows she’s no legend: the humble artist told the audience at the end of the night that she’s always conscious of crediting her influences. “It makes me feel uncomfortable when people write on my Instagram or Twitter, ‘FKA Twigs: Queen of vogue,’ because I’m not,” she said. The singer even took the backseat during the show multiple times, stepping back with her band to DJ as four of her all-male dancers showcased their skills onstage. It was difficult, at times, to decide who to watch — the star of the show or the many bodies fiercely revolving around her.

The most exciting aspect about FKA Twigs is that she’s only just begun. She’s already evolved since her first EP debuted and is still settling into her prime. Consider her name alone — the FKA stands for Formerly Known As, a change made after a still-ongoing legal battle over her previous stage name, Twigs — which puts the performer in a context of continual reinvention. She’s an artist simultaneously defined by who she once was and by the ambiguity of her current identity. Who exactly is FKA Twigs, then? We’re not sure, but she has our full attention.

This Is The ‘Daily Show’ Interview Jon Stewart Regrets Most

Jon Stewart spent 16 years behind the desk of “The Daily Show,” but there’s only one interview he really regrets.

In a discussion with The Guardian, the host said he wishes he questioned former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld harder about his role in the Bush administration’s post-9/11 conflicts. Rumsfeld visited “The Daily Show” in 2011 to discuss his memoir Known and Unknown.

I should have pushed, but he’s very adept at deflecting,” Stewart told The Guardian. “That interview with Rumsfeld went shitty, but it’s still just an interview. He’s the one who has to live with the repercussions of what he really did, so there’s nothing that could happen on my show that carries that same level of regret.”

The host went on to say the reason behind his choice to leave “The Daily Show,” noting that it had nothing to do with the show not working any longer. “It was more, ‘Yup, it’s working. But I’m not getting the same satisfaction.'”

“Daily Show” correspondent Trevor Noah will take over hosting the show later this year when Stewart steps down. Back in March, Stewart joked that he was so thrilled for Noah that he might even consider returning as a correspondent.

For the full interview, head over to The Guardian.

Troopers Catch Driver Using ‘Most Interesting Man’ Pic In Carpool Lane

Washington State Police have issued what may be the “most interesting traffic citation” ever.

On Monday, a motorcycle trooper near Fife, Washington, pulled over a driver who was attempting to use the carpool lane by sticking a cardboard cutout in the passenger seat.

It wasn’t just any face, it was that of Jonathan Goldsmith, the actor who plays “The Most Interesting Man in the World” in Dos Equis ads, KOMO TV reports.

That’s when things got “interesting,” according to Washington State Patrol spokesman Guy Gill.

“[The driver] couldn’t have used a more recognizable face,” Gill told ABC News. “The trooper and the driver had a good laugh about it but he was cited anyway… Our trooper give him a $ 124 ticket for violating [High Occupancy Vehicle] lane laws.”

The driver, who has not been identified by name, did make a half-hearted attempt to go through with the ruse, telling the officer, “He’s my best friend. He just sits here and doesn’t talk,” Gill told the New York Daily News.

The Washington State Patrol immortalized the incident with this tweet:

How Cell Phones Would Have Ruined Most of Our Favorite Movies

If you’re a pop culture maven, most likely it can be agreed that the modern cell phone can be traced back to two classic TV series of the 1960s: Star Trek and Get Smart. Captain James Tiberius Kirk and his USS Enterprise crew were always armed with their “communicators” when traveling abroad on a distant planet. They were palm-sized devices with covers the flipped open, providing instant connection with the orbiting space ship. This design was aped, no doubt, by former Trekkies for the classic “flip phone” design that ruled the high-tech roost in the late 90s and early millennium.

Secret Agent 86 Maxwell Smart had his shoe phone, surely the most creative (and ridiculous) example of technology ever invented by someone who was most likely thought to be a creative and scientific genius. However, it did enable Max to get out of one sticky situation after another. After all, how many bad guys confiscate a spy’s shoes after he’s been captured? With these questions in mind, we’ll take a look at a handful of classic movies, and how they literally couldn’t have played out, if they had been set in a cell phone-ruled universe.

The Wizard of Oz (1939)
Spirited teen Dorothy Gale runs head-on into a 19th century Kansas tornado in search of her terrier, Toto, who’s run off. Now, if Oz had taken place in 21st century Kansas, not only would Dorothy and all her relatives, farm hands and neighbors have smart phones stuck into that big front pocket of their overalls, Toto would have been stuck with a microchip by the local vet when he was just a pup, enabling Dorothy to track him via Google and changing her desperate, fumbling search for him through the cornfields into an easy search that would have taken all of ninety seconds. Cut to Dorothy: “Bad dog!” Dorothy snatches up said dog, scrambles into the storm cellar with time to spare, grabbing a piping hot biscuit for herself from Auntie Em’s fresh batch in the kitchen, and a stew bone for Toto. No conk on the head. No hallucinating about Munchkins, poppy fields and animated scarecrows. And no drug problem for the college-bound Dorothy a few years later because, let’s face it: once you’ve been to Oz, you’d wanna keep going back. And back. And back…

Casablanca (1942)
Former lovers Ilsa and Rick are reunited in Nazi-occupied North Africa. There is still major chemistry between the two, but Ilsa’s heart belongs to her husband, noble Hungarian freedom fighter Victor Laszlo. If Ilsa and Rick had cell phones, their first meeting never would have taken place. Think about it: a chick dumps your ass in Paris, the most romantic city on Earth, in the middle of a frickin’ rainstorm. What’s the first thing you do? You defriend her sorry excuse for a girlfriend on Facebook and get all your real buds to do the same! The minute Ilsa and Victor arrived at Rick’s Café Americana, and of course “checked-in” on Facebook, that one semi-catty female “pal” that stayed in touch with both Rick and Ilsa would inform Rick post-haste that Ilsa was in his establishment. Rick would then text Captain Louis Renault, dropping dime on the fact that the Nazi-wanted Laszlo was in his joint. Louis and his boys would arrest the hot couple on the spot, without Rick ever having to deal with them directly. End of story, with revenge served as the coldest of cold dishes on Rick’s part. Final fade out has Rick telling Sam to tinkle the ivories with the J. Giles Band classic “Love Stinks” as Rick dances with a beautiful Casablancan gal.

Vertigo (1958)
Alfred Hitchcock’s classic, cited by the British Film Institute as the greatest film ever made, could have played out much the same for its first half, until Kim Novak’s Madeline Elster character is “reborn” as Judy Barton, discovered by James Stewart’s ex-cop Scottie Ferguson on the streets of San Francisco. In the world of cell phones and the Internet, Scottie would have become a shut-in after the trauma of losing Madeline, spending all his time surfing dating and hook-up sites on the web and his phone. While cruising chicks on Tinder one lonely night, Scottie would have discovered Madeline/Judy’s profile, as the forlorn girl is now looking for love herself. Scottie quickly puts the pieces together via Photoshop, comparing and contrasting picks of Madeline and Judy under extreme magnification, realizing they’re one and the same. After setting up a Coffee Bean date with “Judy” using a fake Tinder profile picture, Scottie spikes her chai latte with drugged almond milk, taking her to the Golden Gate Bridge, making her confess all as she comes to. As the cops drag Judy off, Scottie throws his cell phone into the San Francisco Bay, deciding to move up to an Oregon commune where all technology is forbidden.

E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
“E.T. phone home!” Well, here’s the thing: if we’d had cellphones in 1982, what do you think an uber-advanced alien would’ve had at that point? He would’ve phoned home. As in post-haste. As in, “Dude, what h-e-double hockey sticks are you guys thinking?! You left me stranded!” The captain of E.T.’s ship, scared shitless that his commanding officer, who happens to be E.T.’s uncle, will find out about this, uses a top secret do-hickey to travel back in time to the point where E.T. wandered off in the first place, grabbing him and dragging him onto the ship, chastising his subordinate for being “a space cadet.” Meanwhile, Elliott, Gertie and the nice suburban family have a normal suburban life, and adopt a Golden Retriever puppy a few months later. They name him Fernando, which translates to “brave traveler,” and got the idea from a new naming app Gertie downloaded onto her iPhone 6.

The ‘Harry Potter’ Cast Had The Most Magical Reunion Ever

We solemnly swear that this is amazing.

Draco Malfoy was hanging out with the Weasleys in West Hollywood recently and decided to share the Hogwarts reunion on Instagram for all us Muggles to see. Ten points to Slytherin for that!

Joining actor Tom Felton in the photo were Rupert Grint, otherwise known as Ron, actress Bonnie Wright, perhaps better known as Ginny, and actor James Phelps, otherwise known as Fred. And something tells us they weren’t drinking butter beers:

Kim K stood me up. Outnumbered by 3 Weasleys. Ugh.

A photo posted by Tom Felton (@t22felton) on

In the caption, Felton also made light of Kim Kardashian’s new look, which has been compared to his in the “Harry Potter” movies. Felton previously told HuffPost Entertainment that Kardashian would be a Slytherin at Hogwarts, so apparently he was spot on. Phelps also shared a reunion photo of his own with a caption reading, “Mini family reunion…and Tom”:

Mini family reunion…and Tom. Great night with the gang

A photo posted by James Phelps (@jamesphelps_pictures) on

Accio good times, right? Though the group didn’t share many details of what they were up to, we’re guessing it was mischief managed.

His Mouth is most Sweet

This part of the series describes the last two years of Tom Appleton (the narrator) and his boyfriend Luke Singleton-Scarborough as undergraduates at the University of Camford. The first year, Tom is left on his own in Camford, as Luke is spending a year as an Erasmus student at the University of Bologna in Italy. Tom’s loneliness is prevented by his friendship with his ‘fag-hag’ Margaret. The boys exchange passionate E-mails and sexy phone-calls. They meet at Christmas in North Yorkshire and at Easter in Nice. Luke is injured in an earthquake and his recovery brings his parents and himself closer to his biological mother, who looks after him on his release from hospital. Tom does well in his third-year exams and starts driving lessons. On Luke’s return, the two go to stay with Luke’s grandparents. Tom takes his BA degree and after Christmas in their final year, Tom’s drunken indiscretion leads to a short period of alienation from Luke. Tom’s period of religious search comes to an end with his baptism in the college chapel. Their last academic year ends with both boys getting firsts in their Finals, and they start looking for jobs in Italy. At a family festival to celebrate Luke’s grandparents’ fortieth wedding anniversary, Tom and Luke, in the presence of all their friends, sign the Civil Partnership register and the following day in a private service make vows of faithfulness to each other before God. Tom gets his MChem degree and they both eventually get fixed up with jobs in the Italian city of Trabizona.

Thieves of Book Row: New York’s Most Notorious Rare Book Ring and the Man Who Stopped It

Thieves of Book Row: New York’s Most Notorious Rare Book Ring and the Man Who Stopped It

No one had ever tried a caper like this before. The goods were kept in a secure room under constant scrutiny, deep inside a crowded building with guards at the exits. The team picked for the job included two old hands known only as Paul and Swede, but all depended on a fresh face, a kid from Pinetown, North Carolina. In the Depression, some fellows were willing to try anything-even a heist in the rare book room of the New York Public Library. In Thieves of Book Row, Travis McDade tells the gripping tale of the worst book-theft ring in American history, and the intrepid detective who brought it down. Author of The Book Thief and a curator of rare books, McDade transforms painstaking research into a rich portrait of Manhattan’s Book Row in the 1920s and ’30s, where organized crime met America’s cultural treasures in dark and crowded shops along gritty Fourth Avenue. Dealers such as Harry Gold, a tough native of the Lower East Side, became experts in recognizing the value of books and recruiting a pool of thieves to steal them-many of them unemployed men who drifted up the Bowery or huddled around fires in Central Park’s shantytowns. When Paul and Swede brought a new recruit into his shop, Gold trained him for the biggest score yet: a first edition of Edgar Allan Poe’s Al Aaraaf, Tamerlane and Minor Poems. Gold’s recruit cased the rare-book room for weeks, searching for a weakness. When he found one, he struck, leading to a breathtaking game of wits between Gold and NYPL special investigator G. William Bergquist. Both a fast-paced, true-life thriller, Thieves of Book Row provides a fascinating look at the history of crime and literary culture.

The Scoop on the Music Industry’s Most Amazing Costumes, Ever

The Grammys are this weekend and along with all the red carpet style, you can count on the stage performances having some major moments too. Some costumes are gorgeous, others are scandalous, but it’s all always just a little over-the-top and made for a specific purpose: to shock and delight us. Designer Marco Marco has worked with mega popstars (do the names Katy Perry, Britney Spears, Iggy Azalea, or Jennifer Lopez ring a bell?) and now, he’s answering my questions about what goes into all that gorgeous stuff.

katy-perry-green-leaf-costume-prismatic-tour

Glamour: What’s been your favorite piece that you’ve worked on so far?

Marco Marco: Whatever I’ve just completed is always my favorite. I’m totally fickle and forget about everything I’ve ever done as soon as I’m doing something new.

Glamour: What was the trickiest thing you’ve ever done, whether while planning or actually constructing?

MM: Years ago when I was working for the Black Eyed Peas, Will.i.am wanted subwoofers that would turn into “robot” dancers in a Transformers kind of way. I had to develop a way that the dancers could fit into these speaker boxes and break into androids without interrupting the choreography. Many cardboard boxes were harmed in the making.

Glamour: Anything that looked simple but was actually tricky?

MM: We’ve been making these chiffon and organza tops for Florence Welch that look fairly simple, but take an extremely patient hand and a high level of technical ability. Other than that, I would say that the most hair-pulling happens with dancer costumes, which are often just as intricate if not more than the artist’s, but get no real air time.

Glamour: What’s your role in the artist’s total process, whether for a music video or a performance?

MM: Every artist has her own version of the creative process. Typically, I come into it after they have an aesthetic direction, and it’s my task to interpret their concepts into illustrations, and eventually, reality. With tours, I’m brought in much earlier as there are so many more costumes and a lot more logistics in terms of changes and times. With videos, there’s always a stylist who is coordinating all of the looks for everything and then I’m asked to make a specific piece.

Glamour: Any tricks you’ve used for a costume that looks risqué, but is never at risk of anything falling out or flipping up?

MM: We use a variety of different fabrics that are extremely sheer or flesh-like in order to mimic skin in places where we can’t have the real thing. Iggy Azalea and Rita Ora’s “Black Widow” performance looks used these techniques.

Glamour: What’s your background?

MM: I received a bachelor’s in theatrical design with an emphasis in props and costumes from Cal Arts. When I moved out to LA I had a small custom boutique where I got a lot of experience with different body types. Eventually, I got into television and commercials and started working for American Idol. That is where I fell in love with the music industry and making costumes for musical performances.

Glamour: Do you watch concerts or shows with pieces you’ve designed?

MM: I never watch anything more than once and I always try to watch from a television or screen so I can see it the way it’s going to be seen by everyone else, even if I’m backstage or on set. I’m pretty emotionless until it’s done. Anything can happen from the time you start until they walk on stage. I’ve made hundreds of things that never ended up making it all the way through the process, so the first and only time I allow myself to get excited about a piece is the moment they step out in it and there’s no turning back.

Have you seen any concerts with costumes that were particularly fantastic?

Jon Stewart Finds The Most Ridiculous Blizzard Coverage

Snowpocalypse 2015 was such a big nothing in some areas, especially in New York City, that one weather forecaster even apologized.

So what’s a network hyping a storm supposed to do? On Tuesday night’s “Daily Show,” Jon Stewart said they had some options.

“Acknowledge that conditions had changed. Ease up on the breathless hype. Focus your attention on New England, where it was actually really snowing,” Stewart suggested. “Or desperately cling to the original narrative like dingleberries on a sheep’s ass.”

Stewart played clip after clip of reporters overreacting to small amounts of snow. However, he aimed his sharpest icicles at CNN, which sent Don Lemon out in a “Blizzardmobile.”

“Blizzardmobile? Settle down, Batman, it’s a Ford Explorer,” Stewart said. Then, referring to some of the highly controversial statements Lemon has made on the air recently, Stewart showed an image of the CNN reporter working from a Dairy Queen truck.

“And by the way, with the way you’ve been reporting lately, you’re lucky you’re not in an actual ‘Blizzardmobile,’” Stewart said.

But the CNN “Blizzardmobile” gave Stewart an idea: Maybe the “Daily Show” can take it to the next level.

Stewart sent correspondent Jordan Klapper out in a car, a bicycle and a sled to to interview people about everything from Yemen to the Greek election.

Check it out in the clip above.

Yale President Peter Salovey: ‘The Most Effective Way To Combat Speech You Don’t Like Is With Speech’

Yale President Peter Salovey spoke on free expression on campuses, reflecting on a recent incident at the University of California, Berkeley, where students protested comedian Bill Maher’s appearance at a graduation ceremony because of controversial comments he made about Muslims.

“It’s very difficult. You see this controversy playing out on many different campuses over the last couple of years,” Salovey said.

Salovey said he thinks people want to live in an environment where others are respectful and civil, but being offended can be a learning experience.

“It’s fine to protest, it’s fine to raise one’s own voice,” Salovey said. “The most effective way to combat speech you don’t like is with speech.”

Did you miss out on love this past year?

Did you meet someone for a fleeting moment only to have lasting happiness fall from your fingers?

You’re not alone. In fact, your “missed connection” was relatively normal, compared to some of the people who tried to find a lost love via the “Missed Connections” page on Craigslist.

WTFark.com collaborated with Mandatory.com on a video dramatizing some of the strangest missed connections of 2014.

They are all wacky, but few were as touching as this one.

“Me, horse costume. You chicken mask. We made out in the second stall in the men’s room outside Hall D. Same place same time next year. I’ll be in a llama costume.”

The 13 Most Underrated Madonna Songs

Anyone who knows me knows that I am a huge Madonna fan. I have been since I was a wee lad dancing around my bedroom lip-syncing to “Borderline”. Amid some Madonna leakage, she released six tracks (which I’m loving) early from her 13th album Rebel Heart (due out on March 10, 2015). That premature release went number one in 42 countries on iTunes sales charts across the globe. Not bad for someone who is 30 years into her career! In my opinion, it’s some of her best work in years. I’m totally “Living for Love”.

She has so many amazing songs that it’s hard to remember every last one. So in the era of lists, I made one! I wanted to put together a little collection of some great Madonna tracks that aren’t in the forefront of everyone’s mind. For this list, I stuck with songs that were actually released in some form. In honor of her 13th album release, here are 13 underrated Madonna songs.

13. Turn Up The Radio

The message and lyrics are simple. Madonna just wants to turn up the radio and dance. While this single wasn’t a huge success, I think it floundered because of lack of promotion. It also suffered from a not-so-great first single (“Give Me All Your Luvin'”). To me this song is just such a great nod and throwback to the Music album or Confessions on a Dancefloor. It’s definitely one of my favorite tracks from MDNA. Excuse me while I turn up my radio and just drive… and lip sync for my life.

12. Bye Bye Baby

Madonna may be an “Unapologetic Bitch” but “Bye Bye Baby” may be one of the sweetest sounding piss-off songs. Sung in an almost cutesy-baby voice, she sings, “I know I love you because I hate you and now I’d rather haunt you.” Ouch! But you are dancing to it so who cares! Just don’t get on Madonna’s bad side.

(She if you can spot Dancing With the Stars judge Carrie Ann Inaba in this video from The Girlie Show.)

11. Hollywood

This is the third song released from American Life. It wasn’t as popular as her other albums but it’s one of my favorites. To me this was an album for the true Madonna fans. You know, aside from the title track. Ok, maybe not the track but that rap. Girl. Your gays weren’t in the office that day. In this track, Madonna skewers all things in La La Land. All true. What’s funny is everyone in Hollywood would just dance to the great beat and not even realize they were being made fun off. Oh, Hollywood.

10. Bad Girl

Is it autobiographical? Or is it a “character” she’s playing in the song? Who can say? But aside from being a touch melodramatic, this song really has a powerful message. Madonna has always thrived at her ballads, which is funny since she’s most noted for her dance tracks. This one is no exception. Who hasn’t been a bad girl from time to time? I’ve lived this song Over and Over, well, except for the cigarettes. Oh and the video is pretty damn epic. It gives us more short film than a music video.

9. Love Don’t Live Here Anymore

Madonna clearly is a woman scorned, again and again (squish, squish, Madge). It’s good news for her fans because it makes her ballads even more powerful. Pondering the Madonna catalogue, she has some real standout ballads. This is one of best. Originally found on the Like A Virgin album, it was released years later on Madonna’s album Something to Remember, a collection of her greatest ballads. It has a certain timeless appeal to it with a very raw and gritty edge. It’s simple and not overproduced. The music video also follows that simplicity, shooting the whole video in one shot.

8. Keep It Together

Her Like a Prayer album is probably her most personable to date and one of her all time best. There’s not one throwaway track on the album. I wish there had been a video for “Keep It Together”. At this point in time a video was crucial to a song’s success. It’s got a great ’70s throwback vibe and is all about family love (M does have a heart!). I dare you not to dance to this song. Oh and the Blonde Ambition rendition of this is on point with nods to Clockwork Orange and Cabaret.

7. Nothing Really Matters

“Ray of Light” is a brilliant album and marked a different, spiritual infused turn for Madonna. I was living for the album when it came out! “Nothing Really Matters” is a haunting dance track about the mistakes Madonna made in her life but she’s moving on, girl! The video is amazingly artistic and utterly bizarre. I love it! I mean, Madonna is wearing a kimono and cradling a bag of water. What more could you want? Except maybe that the bag is actually full of vodka.

6. You’ll See

This song takes a sad break-up and empowers it. Jilted by a lover, Madonna vows she’ll be fine “all by myself.” Do you have any idea how many times I played this song after bad breakups or feeling hopelessly single? What better way to tell off your ex than with a beautiful ballad? I mean besides sleeping with all of his exes. The video is a sequel to her hit single and gorgeous video “Take a Bow”. This is truly a hidden gem in the vast Madonna library.

5. Hanky Panky

Who doesn’t like a good spanky? Direct from her concept album I’m Breathless, this song is a great fusion of ’90s pop and vintage ’30s. I can only imagine what the music video would be? Perhaps it’s “scandalous” subject matter ruffled too many feathers to make it a big hit. Even though those ruffled feathers are usually the worst offenders. Madonna threw herself fully into the role of Breathless Mahoney in Dick Tracy (one of her best roles) and to me the I’m Breathless is one of her standout albums.

2. Jump

Confessions on a Dance Floor is one of Madonna’s best albums filled with infectious vibes. This one not only makes you want to dance, it makes you want to “Jump”, literally. It would have been a much better follow-up to “Hung Up” than Sorry. Not sorry about it.

3. Love Profusion

In my opinion, this is one of the best tracks from her American Life album. I think this should have been the lead single, instead of the title track. Like I previously mentioned who wants to hear Madonna “rap” about having three nannies, a driver and a chef? No one. This song is has a classic Madonna sound yet melded with a more mature Madge vibe.

2. Oh Father

This is one of Madonna’s most personal and powerful songs ever released. “Oh Father” deals with abuse, be it mental or physical. In the video, it is the repeated pattern of abuse, first in her father and then a lover (most likely a nod to the tumultuous relationship she had with Sean Penn). There’s a certain rawness to her vocals and a vulnerability. This is something you don’t see in Madonna a lot. As a victim of mental abuse from my father, this one hits close to home.

1. Nothing Fails

This song is like an acoustic follow up to her mega-hot “Like a Prayer”. This should have been the second release off her American Life album (following “Love Profusion”) with a music video to compliment it. I get chills when the choir comes on. Chills, I say! I’m not religious but I feel so moved, by this song.

Honorable mention:

Supernatural

Ok so technically this track was never released as a single but I had to include it in this list. Why? Well, 1) it’s my list, dammit and 2) the song is about having sex with a ghost. Madonna is often thought to take herself too seriously as an artist when some of her songs lack depth. With this song is there any doubt that Madonna can have fun with it all? This song definitely ranks high on my list of favorites and should have been included on her Like A Prayer album, instead of just a B-side to “Cherish”. This definitely could have been a great release and can you just imagine the music video for this?
