Shia LaBeouf Really Tattooed His Chest for Suicide Squad Director’s Crime Movie

Shia LaBeouf really got his chest and torso heavily tattooed for Suicide Squad director David Ayer’s new movie The Tax Collector.

“He’s one of the best actors I’ve worked with, and he’s the most committed to body and soul,” Ayer told /Film (via Newsweek). “He had a tooth pulled on Fury, and then on Tax Collector, he got his whole chest tattooed. So he kind of goes all in, and I’ve never known anyone that committed.”

The Tax Collector sees LaBeouf play “Creeper,” the right hand man and best friend of Bobby Soto’s protagonist, David. One of the tattoos on LaBeouf’s torso reads “Creeper,” which sparked much speculation whether it was real when paparazzi photos of a shirtless LaBeouf surfaced online last year.

In The Tax Collector, David and Creeper collect debts owed by local gangs to the crime lord Wizard. Their lives and business are upended when Wizard’s old rival returns to L.A. from Mexico looking to take over. As you can see from the trailer below, LaBeouf appears very steely and intense in the role.

Heavily tattooed characters are nothing new for a David Ayer film, as most notably seen in his adaptation of DC Comics’ Suicide Squad that featured Jared Leto’s Joker and his infamous “damaged” forehead tattoo.

In recent months, Ayer has revealed morsels of new info about Suicide Squad, such as whether Joker intended to push Harley Quinn out of a helicopter, if an “Ayer Cut” of Suicide Squad would be easy to complete, that most of Jared Leto’s Joker footage “remains unseen,” and how Deadpool turned Suicide Squad into a comedy.

Shia LaBeouf, meanwhile, explored what makes him tick as a human being and an actor in last year’s autobiographical film Honey Boy, which won him rave reviews. LaBeouf both scripted and played a version of his own father in the indie drama.

Viewers can see more of Shia LaBeouf’s Creeper (and his real tattoos) when The Tax Collector — which also stars Cinthya Carmona and George Lopez — debuts in theaters, on digital, and On Demand on August 7.

Mister Sinister Was Supposed to Be in This X-Men Movie

Iconic Marvel Comics villain Mister Sinister narrowly missed his chance to appear in Fox’s X-Men movie franchise. According to Dark Phoenix writer/director Simon Kinberg, the plan was for Sinister to appear in the now canceled Gambit movie starring Channing Tatum.

Kinberg confirmed those story plans while taking part in IGN’s Watch From Home Theater for X-Men: Days of Future Past. 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse was indeed meant to set the stage for a Mister Sinister-driven X-Men movie. Just maybe not the one fans would have guessed.

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=all-the-x-men-movies-that-probably-wont-happen-now-and-a-few-that-will&captions=true”]

“We had a tease of it at the end of Apocalypse. The Essex Corp is something that you see in a tag at the end of Apocalypse,” said Kinberg. “We had talked about doing something with him, and I won’t get into the specifics of it since it’s no longer a 20th Century Fox property and now it’s part of the MCU. I have no idea what the plan is. But Mister Sinister was going to be part of the Gambit movie starring Channing Tatum.”

This seems to discredit another popular online rumor suggesting Sinister would have a cameo in New Mutants (with actors like Jon Hamm and Daniel Craig rumored for the role), setting him up as a major villain in that particular spinoff series. Indeed, Kinberg told IGN that plans for Mr. Sinister never got close enough to the casting stage so you can forget about those rumors of Hamm and Craig.

A Gambit movie has been in various stages of development ever since the character’s live-action debut in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Channing Tatum came aboard to star in and produce the Gambit movie in 2014. Sadly, despite appearing at Comic-Con in 2015 alongside Stan Lee and the rest of the X-Men movie-verse cast, Tatum’s dream of playing the Ragin’ Cajun never materialized. The film cycled through several directors, including Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity), and Gore Verbinski (the original Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy). But ultimately, Gambit was one of many planned X-Men movies canceled after Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox.

As Kinberg alludes, there’s no telling what Marvel Studios’ plans for the X-Men franchise are right now. It’s always possible the Gambit movie will survive the transition to Disney (as Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool 3 seems to have done) and we may still see Tatum given the chance to play Gambit at long last. But for now, fans may need to wait a very long time to see Gambit finally battle Mister Sinister on the big screen.

Check back soon for even more juicy tidbits revealed during the Days of Future Past WFH Theater stream.

Bane Movie Masks Selling Out During Coronavirus Pandemic

Bane masks are selling out amidst the coronavirus pandemic.

With many Americans still required by local governments to wear face masks or coverings while out in public, one of the most popular masks being sold online is of Tom Hardy’s incarnation of the DC supervillain in The Dark Knight Rises.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, both cloth and plastic Bane masks — none of which are medically approved for pandemic protection, mind you — have been selling out online.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/10/19/ranking-the-batman-movie-villains”]

The trade claims Costume.com, BuyCostumes.com and HalloweenCostumes.com are all sold out of plastic Bane masks, while Etsy is selling over 150 variations of cloth Bane masks.

“Looking at sales figures, the adult mask had quite a sales spike in April and early May, which is unusual for this time of year,” Costume.com spokesperson David DeJac told THR.

DeJac added there are still full Bane costumes available which indicates that consumers were just interested in having the mask.

Lord and Miller Finally Get to Make a Space Movie

Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s Hollywood credits include the Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse, the Jump Street movies, and roughly half of a Star Wars movie about a young Han Solo. But rather than let the final frontier go unexplored, the filmmaking duo are headed back to space for a new film starring Ryan Gosling. According to Variety, Lord and Miller have been brought on by MGM to direct and produce the film adaptation of a space thriller novel by The Martian author Andy Weir.

Weir’s upcoming book is set for publication in Spring 2021 by Random House, but it doesn’t have a title at the moment, so it’s being referred to as “Project Hail Mary.” A fitting placeholder title for a story about an astronaut aboard a space ship on a desperate mission to save the planet.

Lord and Miller were fired from Solo: A Star Wars Story in the middle of production due to creative differences. According to reports, Lord and Miller have a more loose and improvisational style when it comes to movie-making, but that didn’t sit well with Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy and screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan, who like to go strictly by the script, so they were taken off the project and replaced with director Ron Howard.

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=star-wars-and-its-weird-recent-history-of-director-drop-outs&captions=true”]

The 2015 film adaptation of The Martian by director Ridley Scott starring Matt Damon earned plenty of commercial success and critical praise, emphasized by its seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor in a Leading Role. So there’s little wonder why top talent are already lining up to make a movie based on Weir’s next project.

No, The New Mutants Isn’t an MCU Movie

A D23.com news briefs article spotlighting the upcoming Fox Marvel movie The New Mutants got fans in a tizzy when it seemingly revealed groundbreaking information connecting the X-Men universe movie to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but we’re here to let you know that it was not true.

The article referred to The New Mutants as the “seriously electrifying new addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe,” and while the former very well may be the case, IGN can confirm that the latter is not: No, The New Mutants isn’t an MCU movie, though it is a new Fox Marvel movie to be released since Disney’s acquisition of the studio.

The D23.com article has since been removed from the official Disney fan club website, but you can see the original comment in the screenshot below:

new-mutants-mcu-marvel-d23
D23.com incorrectly referred to the upcoming X-Men universe film as a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

When the purported MCU connection started spreading around social media, fans were intrigued, though doubtful of its accuracy:

Directed by Josh Boone, The New Mutants is finally hitting theaters on April 3 in the US (April 8 in the UK) after being delayed for almost two years. While promoting the new trailer’s release, Boone confirmed that this was the original version of the movie that he shot for Fox, despite the Disney acquisition.

If you haven’t already, be sure to watch the recently released trailer for The New Mutants below:

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/01/06/the-new-mutants-official-trailer-2″]

The New Mutants’ release is interesting because, as mentioned earlier in this article, it is a new X-Men universe movie to be released since Disney acquired Fox, and since that acquisition, the future of the X-Men franchise has been unclear. While Dark Phoenix seemingly brought the core X-Men franchise to a close and Gambit is well and truly dead, The New Mutants was designed to expand the scope of Fox’s X-Men movies with a more standalone story using other characters from the X-Men comics pantheon — a move conceived in a pre-Disney/Fox world.

Because of its delayed release and the acquisition leaving X-Men’s Disney future unclear, there was a concern that The New Mutants might be shelved permanently, though fortunately, that was not the case. This is standalone from the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s pantheon of characters, though, which is why the seeming confirmation of its existence within the MCU earlier Friday would have completely recontextualized The New Mutants movie’s function and purpose.

Even though they haven’t been announced, Marvel’s Kevin Feige confirmed he does have plans for the X-Men to join the larger MCU. At San Diego Comic-Con, he told IGN, “Whatever we do will be quite different than what’s been done before.” You can watch our full interview with Feige below:

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/07/21/kevin-feige-on-x-men-plans-no-avengers-movie-in-phase-4-comic-con-2019″]

The New Mutants stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Magik, Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane, Henry Zaga as Sunspot, Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie, Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar, Alice Braga as Dr. Cecilia Reyes and Antonio Banderas as the film’s villain.

While The New Mutants may not be a part of the MCU Phase 4 lineup, plenty of other titles are. Refresh yourself on what’s coming for Marvel over the course of the next few years by clicking through the gallery below:

Chris Rock Says His Saw Movie Has Humor But ‘It’s Not Scary Movie’

The upcoming Chris Rock-produced Saw spin-off will be a horror film with a “sprinkling of humor here and there,” but will not go to a Scary Movie-level of comedy.

IGN’s David Griffin asked Rock at a recent Television Critics Association press event why he wanted to get involved in the Saw franchise. He responded by saying that he thinks even a couple jokes can make a huge difference in a TV show or film.

“A lot of times I go to a movie or I watch a TV show and I go, ‘Wow, you know, two jokes would have made a big difference in that.’” Rock explained. “I love Saw, but I was like ‘wow, it has almost no humor at all.’ So, it seemed like a good place…good fertile ground…by the way, the new Saw, I’ve seen like a rough cut. It’s still Saw…it’s bloody, it’s gory, but there’s like a sprinkling of humor here and there. We’re not revamping it, it’s not Scary Movie, it’s Saw.”

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2017/10/25/saws-complicated-story-in-5-minutes-sort-of”]

Rock was obviously referencing the 2000 comedy Scary Movie starring Shawn and Marlon Wayans, Anna Faris, and Regina Hall that was a parody of such horror films as Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer.

This untitled Saw spin-off is set to be released in theaters on May 15, 2020, and will be the first new Saw entry since 2017’s Jigsaw.

Rock will also star in the film as a police detective investigating crimes most likely tied to the Jigsaw Killer and Samuel L. Jackson will be playing his father.

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=59-movies-to-geek-out-over-in-2020&captions=true”]

We think the “curiosity factor along” of this new Saw film will make it a success at the box office with a potential franchise record debut and domestic take.

Fans of Chris Rock’s work won’t have to wait until May to see him in action, however, as he will also be starring in the fourth season of Fargo which premieres on April 19, 2020.

Lady Gaga to Star in Ridley Scott’s Upcoming Gucci Movie

Lady Gaga is stepping back in front of the camera.
The Oscar-winner will star in an upcoming film on the Gucci family dynasty, taking on the role of Patrizia Reggiani. Reggiani is the ex-wife of Maurizio Gucci, grandson of the Italian fashion house’s founder, Guccio Gucci. The film will be directed by Ridley Scott.
According to Variety, Reggiani gained notoriety in the Nineties when she was tried and convicted for hiring a hit man to kill her ex-husband, who was shot outside his Milan office. Gucci was the last of the family to run the fashion label, having resigned as chairman and selling his 50 percent stake in the company for $ 100 million two years prior, according to WWD’s 1995 obituary on Gucci.

The loose idea here, for this quasi-improvisational road trip tale directed by Scott Aukerman, is that Will Ferrell is a maniacal coke addict who, for the sake of trillions of “clicks” on Funny or Die, forces his celebrity friends to fly to North Carolina to appear on a small-town show hosted by a rude moron.

Batman: Hush Movie Review

Batman: Hush screened at San Diego Comic-Con 2019. The movie will be released in Digital HD format on July 20 and Blu-ray and DVD on August 6.

Batman: Hush is widely regarded as one of the finest comic book storylines in the Dark Knight’s 80-year history. It even made our Top 25 countdown. It’s surprising it’s taken DC this long to give Hush the animated movie treatment, especially considering how many of these direct-to-video projects have centered on the Batman family. But DC has finally corrected that omission with its 35th entry in the DC Universe Movies. Better yet, this adaptation actually improves upon some of the flaws of the source material, even if it makes its own mistakes in the process.

Shazam! Movie: Explaining the History of [Spoilers]

FULL SPOILERS ahead for Shazam!

In what seemed like the kind of plot development that might be saved for a sequel, Shazam! totally went there and introduces the entire Shazam Family in its third act — the Shazamily! But who exactly are the Shazam Family — formerly known as the Captain Marvel Family — and what’s their history? Let’s break it down…

The Shazam Family are part of a long trend of superhero “families” like the Batman Family and the Superman Family, except these guys were basically the originals: an entire squadron of superhero sidekicks sporting very similar powers and costumes to the main hero.

The most recognizable members of the group, beyond the Big Red Cheese himself, are Captain Marvel, Jr. and Mary Marvel. Their names, of course, date back to an era when Shazam! was still known as Captain Marvel, and indeed, wasn’t even a DC Comics character yet. (Get the full story on Shazam’s complicated history here.) First appearing in Fawcett Comics’ Whiz Comics #25 (December 1941) and Captain Marvel Adventures #18 (December 1942), respectively, Captain Marvel Jr. and Mary Marvel are the powered-up versions of Freddy Freeman and Mary Batson.

5 Movie Character Costumes That Need to Be Retired Immediately

We all* love using October 31st as an excuse to play dress-up as our favorite film heroes and heroines, but there is a difference between classic characters (Ghostbusters, Holly Golightly, James Bond) and characters du jour. We are currently in The Era Of Frozen And Breaking Bad, but should Elsa and Walter White still be super popular five or ten years from now? Probably not.

The following five costumes are long past their cultural moments and yet remain stubbornly prevalent, making them less “throwback” and more “[yawn].” Please allow me to offer alternatives that, while perhaps unoriginal, aren’t ubiquitous.

1. The Corpse Bride from The Corpse Bride

Literally any character in literally any Tim Burton film makes a guaranteed great costume, so why do we always see a hundred blue-faced brides shivering in the late-October night? My theory is that, Lord knows why, many American women own wedding-like lacy white dresses we are looking for an excuse to destroy. If this is the case for you, I suggest Cady’s “ex-wife” costume from Mean Girls. It works on two levels: Your dumb friends will think you are an “ex-wife.” Your cool friends will know you are Cady as an “ex-wife.”

2. The Joker

This costume makes me uncomfortable. Why do so many people find it so fun to pretend to be a psychotic killer from a movie that came out years ago? Don’t say it has nothing to do with Heath Ledger’s death; humans are sickos. And don’t say you’re the Jared Leto or Jack Nicholson version; nobody believes you. This costume is either done well and is terrifying, or is done poorly and makes the wearer look like a child playing with mommy’s makeup. Just be Beetlejuice.

3. Margot Tenenbaum

We get it, you’re a special girl, but this is the Uggs-and-leggings of Halloween costumes. If you insist on looking insufferably vintage chic, throw on the last multi-colored nightmare you bought at Anthropologie (you know you have one) and be Amelie.

4. Jack Sparrow

The Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise ceased to be relevant ages ago. If you want to be a badass, be Han Solo. If you want to be a beloved Disney character, be Mr. Incredible. If you want to wear eyeliner, wear eyeliner. It’s your life.

5. Nina in Black Swan

So your fancy outfit was too short and sparkly to turn it into a Corpse Bride ensemble, eh? Fear not, there are two beautiful, hard-working real-life women you can dress up as in a tutu or leotard: Misty Copeland and Michelle Kwan! (Note: If you happen to be Caucasian and are thinking, wow, those women are so inspiring! I think I’ll change the pigment of my skin to look more like them, don’t. That’s racist. Just wear the outfit.)

6. Bonus! Marty McFly from Back To The Future

This costume has been steadily gaining popularity over the past few Halloweens, and it’s not hard to see why: dope ’80s reference, dope jacket-and-vest combo, and Michael J. Fox is a national treasure. And 2015, of course, is Back To The Future year. So, you know what? Be Marty. Everyone be Marty. Take your pictures. Get it out of your system. Because starting Halloween 2016, Marty McFly is on hiatus. If you’re not over your nostalgia by then, you’ll have to be Teen Wolf or Elliot from E.T. Make this the Halloween Of McFly. And then, stop.

*Unless you’re one of those people who doesn’t “do” Halloween, in which case, I pity you.

3 Reasons Tightening Movie Theater Security isn’t the Answer

2015-08-28-1440790376-6326644-movies.jpeg

Visiting an actual movie theater for the first time in years was a strange, if not relatively unpleasant experience. The snack bar girl itched red welts on her arms that made me wary of seat cushion bedbugs. Movie previews advertised a phone app alerting older people with sensitive bladders when a boring scene came on so they could go pee.

The fact that hatchet wielding, gun toting maniacs have chosen movie theaters as locations for bloodbaths in Aurora Colorado (12 killed/ 70 injured/ Batman/ 2012), Lafayette, LA ( 2 killed/ 9 wounded/ Trainwreck/ July 2015) and Nashville, Tenessee (1 hatchet scraping/Fury Road/August 2015) feels slightly absurd. Mainstream movie theater audience members in the majority of theaters across the country are often the elderly, children and other individuals with an occasional old school fetish for real movie theaters. Movie theaters are no longer locations that seem ingrained in the American psyche. Few people can imagine themselves being bludgeoned in a movie theater, because fewer people go.

Tightening Big Brother style security in these locations will ensure even fewer people go, and movie theaters will deteriorate more. It is an ineffective, knee jerk, band aid reaction to what is hopefully a passing copycat lunatic fad. However, theaters across the country are setting new security measures in stone.

Regal Cinemas recently instituted mandatory bag checks in its 156 theaters nationwide. Showcase Cinemas (owned by National Amusements), in Connecticut completely banned backpacks and packages. Off the charts security measures ranging from metal detectors to TSA scans in movie theaters are being proposed by everyone from legislators to CEO’s.

Tighter security measures may border on civil rights violations, paves the way for 1984 brand mechanisms to be put in place in public spaces and deteriorates our chances of retaining our humanity. Turning public places into fortresses ultimately increases tension and escalates, rather than deters, violence.

The appropriate response to surreal madness is not to match it with more surreal madness. Here are some reasons why….

Three Reasons Tightening Movie Theater Security isn’t the Answer

1) Bag Searches are a Killjoy:
There is pleasure left in movie theaters—particularly in art theaters in larger cities that have retained old school style and charm. It’s still possible to sit in a theater and fantasize about being magically transformed into the lusty heroine on the screen, to become transfixed by an elegant landscape, enamored with the amplified echo of ice cubes clinking in crystalline glasses of scotch.

Security rifling through your bags can put a serious damper in the dreamscape of movie theaters. (They also make it impossible to bring bootleg store bought jolly ranchers and sour patch kids through the door.)

More importantly, bag searches just set precedence for more interference. Although airports may be appropriate places for metal detectors, TSA scans and the occasional body cavity search–movie theaters are not.

2) These Responses are Profoundly Ineffective. No axe wielding, gun toting, pepper spray sporting disgruntled American wanna be cartoon villain or psychopath is going to be deterred by a bag search. James Holmes walked out a back door in Aurora to get his weapons and reentered the theater through the same door with them before opening fire. Lafayette’s John “Rusty” Russel Houser had a gun on his person but left and returned through a side door. Vincente Montano, admittedly, did bring his pepper spray and hatchet in two backpacks—but if back checks were instituted, it’s likely he would have found another way.

Doing bag checks is a silly gesture, at best. Movie theater security staff peeking into bags will do nothing to keep weapons out. It will only make patrons more anxious.

3) There are bigger fish to fry here. Ramping up security anywhere a mentally impaired, deranged, racist or psychotic person has gone on a rampage and killed people in the US in recent years would require psycho security in elementary schools, churches, synagogues, as well as movie theaters. Creating more barriers as a reaction to large scale violence is fruitless. Maniacs can slip through the cracks anywhere, and there are no barriers without cracks. Turning ourselves into a well walled country, gives us even less of a chance to address deeper problems and retain our dignity as people. We should not be looking at how to fortify ourselves against gun violence, or mentally ill people running amok, after the fact—but addressing the underlying causes of those issues, first, before the chaos occurs. The fact that we aren’t is sad.

Ex Machina Again?: Hour of the Wolf Movie Review of The Machine

2015-08-23-1440362178-3165223-The_Machine_410.jpgThe Machine, Dan? The Machine? That’s the film you’re talking about, right?”

No, no I’m actually talking about The Machine, another film entirely. But in an curious way, I’m talking about Ex Machina as well, because it turns out there are some interesting parallels between the two films, in sufficient quantity that I think it’s well-worth discussion. Movie Review: The Man from U.N.C.L.E.: Broken tentpole

2015-08-12-1439376637-2049961-uncle3.jpg

Guy Ritchie’s The Man from U.N.C.L.E. is a day late and a dollar short — actually, make that several seasons late, for anyone who watches the outrageously funny animated series, Archer.

Watching Henry Cavill deadpan his way through this film as CIA agent Napoleon Solo (the name says it all, doesn’t it?), I kept waiting for him to drop one of those random one-liners that punctuate the Archer episodes like bubbles of laughing gas. Cavill looks the part and could easily play the human version of this cartoon character.

Unfortunately, Ritchie and his cowriter Lionel Wigram didn’t have a roomful of comedy writers to punch up their soft script. The result is a heavy-footed film that barely gets by on one actor’s charm, animated by some patently bogus-looking special effects.

For those of us ancient enough to have been impressionable TV viewers when The Man from U.N.C.L.E. aired on NBC beginning in 1964, the memories hold not the slightest whiff of a spoof. The show was TV’s answer to the growing popularity of the James Bond films and the belief that the audience was intrigued with intrigue and spies (indeed, Bond creator Ian Fleming was one of the show’s originators).

While there was humor in the give-and-take between Solo (Robert Vaughn), colleague Illya Kuryakin (David McCallum) and boss Alexander Waverly (Leo G. Carroll), this show was meant to be semi-serious and exciting, along the lines of the original Mission: Impossible (which went on air two years later). If you wanted parody, you tuned in to Get Smart (which debuted the season after The Man from U.N.C.L.E.).

Now all three of these series have graduated to the big screen — and you can tell from the final scenes of U.N.C.L.E. that it’s meant to be a tentpole franchise. It worked for Mission: Impossible,” though that series is showing its age 20 years and five films into the process.

Ritchie is a pioneering cinematic stylist whose early films broke ground by infusing the most eye-catching visual effects from TV commercials into the British gangster film. Unfortunately, he has never been particularly strong on story. Nor is he a comedy writer: He’s a director with a kinetic and playful visual style, who seems to completely lose the thread when he takes the reins of a big-budget studio franchise (i.e., the cynically cash-grabbing Sherlock Holmes films with Robert Downey Jr.).

So it is with The Man from U.N.C.L.E., which has a repetitive plot and tropes.

This review continues on my website.

Josh Gad Would ‘Jump At The Opportunity’ For A ‘Book Of Mormon’ Movie

A big-screen adaptation of  Matt Stone and Trey Parker’s riotous Broadway hit ”The Book of Mormon” has been rumored for several years, and while there’s nothing new to report on whether it’ll actually happen, Josh Gad would be totally down to take part.

Gad, who originated the role of Elder Cunningham in the play in 2011, dropped by HuffPost Live on Monday with director Chris Columbus to discuss their film “Pixels,” which opens July 24. During the conversation, a fan asked Gad whether he would reprise his part if a film happened, and the actor said he may have aged out of the character.

“Does this look like the face of an 18-year-old, sweetie?” Gad joked.

Answering the question more seriously, the actor said he would “jump at the opportunity” if Stone and Parker wanted him.

“I would actually love to,” he said. “I would read the phone book if Trey and Matt asked me to on film.”

Watch Gad discuss the possibility of a ”Book of Mormon'” adaptation in the video above, and click here to watch the full HuffPost Live conversation with Gad and Chris Columbus.

The Ten Greatest Stoners in Movie History

2015-07-09-1436481138-3421662-candc

2015 will most likely go down as the year that the once-taboo became respectable, with both gay marriage and marijuana finding legal and public acceptance nationwide. While the Supreme Court made same-sex marriage legal in all fifty states, the marijuana initiative is having an appropriately slower, but steady climb into legality. That said, we thought we’d take a look at some of cinema’s greatest proponents of the stoner lifestyle, before it all becomes downright conventional.

10. Jeff Spicoli–Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982)

Sean Penn not only became a star with his turn as surfer/stoner Jeff Spicoli in the 1980s’ most iconic teen movie, he established how the stoners of the ’80s differed from their predecessors: while the rebels of the ’60s and ’70s viewed their use of cannabis as a symbol of rebellion, and preferred it to alcohol and the other symbols of their parents’ generation and its decadence, in the ’80s it was all about hedonism, which included drinking and smoking weed in kind. Spicoli’s mantra of “All I need are tasty waves, a cool buzz, and I’m fine,” became the motto of all kids raised in the Reagan Era.

9. Captain America (aka Wyatt) and Billy–Easy Rider (1969)

If the Beatles and Bob Dylan helped bring stoner culture into the Baby Boomers’ lexicon, Easy Rider was the movie that cemented stonerism as a necessary component of the counterculture. This was driven home in the now-classic scene where Wyatt and Billy (Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper) get country lawyer George Hanson (Jack Nicholson, in his star-making role) high for the first time (“Marijuana! Is that what that is?”), followed by George/Jack’s brilliantly stony monologue about how aliens are living and breeding among us.

8. Dave “Woody” Wooderson–Dazed and Confused (1993)

Matthew McConaughey’s character of perpetual teenager Woody Wooderson in director Richard Linklater’s homage to life in suburban Austin, TX., circa 1976, is never given a specific age, but his status as a weed connoisseur and an impressive lexicon of meme-worthy quotes (“Alright, alright, alright.” “That’s what I love about these high school girls, man. I get older, they stay the same age.” And the pièce de résistance: “Wooderson: Say, man, you got a joint? Mitch: No, not on me, man. Wooderson: It’d be a lot cooler if you did.”) make his status as an all-time stoner champ indisputable.

7. Harold and Kumar–Harold and Kumar Trilogy (2004, 2008, 2011)

Harold and Kumar brought stonerism into the 21st century with aplomb, style and epic cases of the munchies. What began as a simple odyssey to fuel their Maryjane-induced hunger pangs, led to an epic, Candide-like tale to such exotic locales at Guantanamo, Radio City Music Hall, KKK rallies, and smoking up with such disparate characters as Santa Claus, George W. Bush and a persona-smashing incarnation of Neil Patrick Harris.

8. Sgt. Elias–Platoon (1986)

Oliver Stone’s Oscar-sweeper told a story of the Vietnam War from the grunt’s POV. One of the first things that Private Chris Taylor (Charlie Sheen) sees when he arrives at his platoon’s camp is that the soldiers are clearly divided into two groups: the ultra-right wing boozers (led by psycho Sgt. Barnes, played to perfection by Tom Berenger) and the progressive rock & roll loving stoners, led by the philosophical Sgt. Elias (Willem Dafoe). I think most people can agree that there was nothing fun about the Vietnam War and the men who fought it were treated with equal contempt by the Vietnamese people and their fellow Americans upon returning home, one of the darkest chapters in our country’s history. That said, if you had to be there, deciding which camp you would have belonged to is one hell of a litmus test.

7. Ivan Martin–The Harder They Come (1972)

Perry Henzell’s story of country lad Ivan Martin (Reggae great Jimmy Cliff) who travels to big city Kingston with dreams of musical stardom is credited for single-handedly popularizing Reggae music and culture in the U.S. Of course as it deals with Rastafarian culture and people, there are epic amounts of ganja featured in this remarkable film, which has Ivan being pulled in opposite directions by crooked record producers and drug dealers, forcing him to become a criminal to survive. In the end, even the kind buds indigenous to Jamaica’s soil can’t change Ivan’s fate, but until then, what a ride!

6. Floyd–True Romance (1993)

A box office disappointment upon release that became a classic in retrospect, True Romance features a script by pre-Pulp Fiction Quentin Tarantino and a cast of actors who became a who’s-who of stars as the 1990s progressed. No one fit this bill more than Brad Pitt, whose scene-stealing supporting turn as Floyd, the uber-stoner roommate of Michael Rappaport’s Dick Ritchie, remains the film’s most memorable character, in spite of being surrounded with dozens of colorful turns by a dream cast. In fact, one could argue that Floyd’s passive stonerism is the only thing that saves him from becoming another notch on the gunbelt of ruthless mafia hitmen who lay waste to everyone else in their wake. “You guys wanna…smoke a bowl?”

5. Professor Jennings–Animal House (1978)

Donald Sutherland does a memorable loopy turn as stony college professor who turns on a few of his students one night in 1962. Tom Hulce’s monologue about universes inside fingernails remains one of the most authentic stony, pseud-intellectual monologues ever written. Sutherland’s gentle, amused demeanor throughout is priceless.

4. Carl Spackler–Caddyshack (1980)

Bill Murray’s left-of-center groundskeeper Carl is one of cinema’s most memorable oddballs, whether he’s chipping away a freshly-planted flower bed with fantasies of PGA glory, hunting terrorist gophers with plastic explosives or sharing his own strain of weed with Bushwood Country Club stalwart Ty Webb (Chevy Chase), explaining “This is a hybrid. This is a cross, ah, of Bluegrass, Kentucky Bluegrass, Featherbed Bent, and Northern California Sinsemilla. The amazing stuff about this is, that you can play 36 holes on it in the afternoon, take it home and just get stoned to the bejeezus-belt that night on this stuff.” The classic scene between Murray and Chase was, apparently, entirely improvised on the spot. We are all the luckier for it.

3. The Dude–The Big Lebowski (1998)

Jeff Bridges’ “The Dude” is a prototypical sixties leftover who finds himself stuck in the middle of a 1990s film noir nightmare, in the Coen Brothers’ brilliant, unique satire. When the Dude isn’t swilling his signature White Russian cocktails, weed is his go-to vice of choice, which he smokes with gusto. Our favorite exchange: “Blond Treehorn Thug: [holding up a bowling ball] What the fuck is this? The Dude: Obviously you’re not a golfer.” Through it all, The Dude abides.

2. Hunter S. Thompson–Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998)

Director Terry Gilliam remains the only filmmaker to bring Hunter S. Thompson’s unique brand of mad brilliance to the screen with success, and what a dizzying, psychedelic masterpiece it is. Adapted from Thompson’s memoir (as his alter ego, Raoul Duke, played by Johnny Depp) detailing a cross-country road trip with attorney/comrade Dr. Gonzo (Benicio Del Toro) and their search for “The American Dream,” fueled by a pharmacy of drugs and alcohol in the trunk of Duke’s car, The Red Shark. A book and a film that almost defy description, suffice to say that, according to most devoted stoners and practitioners of extreme behavior/lifestyles, no other film captures the energy, attitudes and visions of drug use better.

1. Pedro and “Man” (aka Cheech & Chong) – Up in Smoke (1978)

The most joyful depiction of stoner lifestyle ever committed to celluloid, Cheech & Chong popularized stoner humor and culture in a series of top-selling records during the 1970s, with this 1978 ode to taking it easy being their pinnacle. The plot, such as it is, has the boys unwittingly driving a van made of weed from L.A. to Mexico, with the Fascistic narc Sgt. Stedenko (Stacy Keach, hilarious) hot on their trail. Our favorite moment, which was a tough one to choose, is posted above.

Oliver Stone’s Oscar-sweeper told a story of the Vietnam War from the grunt (Charlie Sheen)’s POV.

Young Han Solo ‘Star Wars’ Spinoff To Be Helmed By ‘Lego Movie’ Directors

“Star Wars” and Legos were practically made for each other, as the “Force Awakens” Lego remake trailer proved. And now, the duo behind “The Lego Movie” are headed to a galaxy far, far away.

On Tuesday, StarWars.com announced that Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the team best known for the Oscar-nominated animated film, will direct a ”Star Wars” anthology film. The directors, who were also behind “21 Jump Street, “22 Jump Street” and “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs,” will direct a stand-alone film based on a young Han Solo. The spinoff, written by Lawrence Kasdan (“The Empire Strikes Back,” “Return of the Jedi,” “The Force Awakens”) and Jon Kasdan (“The First Time”), will reveal how Han Solo became the “smuggler, thief, and scoundrel” we first met at the Mos Eisley Cantina.

“This is the first film we’ve worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with,” Lord and Miller said in StarWars.com’s press release. “We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us. This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you’ve loved since before you can remember having dreams at all.” Well said.

According to Entertainment Weekly, a Han Solo origin film, which was first rumored two years ago, was reportedly going to be one of the first films in the “Star Wars” anthology series. However, “Rogue One” from director Gareth Edwards, was pushed up as the first spinoff so as not to confuse fans after Harrison Ford’s appearance in “The Force Awakens.”

Before the young Han Solo spinoff hits theaters on May 25, 2018, there’s lots of “Star Wars” to look forward to. J.J. Abrams’ “The Force Awakens” will open Dec. 18, followed by “Rogue One” on Dec. 16, 2016. There’s also the second “Star Wars” stand-alone film, which director Josh Trank left in May, as well as a separate rumored Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off

Movie Review: Inside Out…Convoluted

After repressing several urges to walk out during the screening of Inside Out, I stayed until the conclusion. Alas, this is an overrated film directed by Pete Docter and Ronnie del Carmen that is confusing. It is also childish and, yet, too complex for children. For adults, it is a drag. Yes, it is a clever thought, but it is not executed with a matching expertise. We all know we have a range of emotions and they are at war each other daily. But the animation of these emotions is subpar for Pixar. Up created by Pixar had a spectacular story line and the animation of the characters was stellar. The animation of the parents of Inside Out’s Riley, our star, is up to snuff, but the emotions of Joy, (Amy Poehler) Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling), Sadness (Phyllis Smith) are not clever to look at. They are not up to Pixar’s ability to create inventive animated characters.

The story line is that these emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind. The play on words as in “head” “quarters” is as silly as is this film. Throughout the day these emotions speak to Riley and interact. Riley is at a crisis in her young life as her father has uprooted her from her Midwest life to live in San Francisco where he has a new job. As Riley struggles to adjust to her new life, chaos ensues in Headquarters. Alas chaos ensues in the plot which becomes chaotic without much reason. Chaos is not plot as my former mentor Norman Mailer would preach, but Pixar seems to have created a movie that should be called Chaos, instead of Inside Out. Oh, it is charming how Riley faces the new activities at school, the trials of moving into a home before the furniture arrives, and trying to fit in with her new classmates. But the story line was not enough for me. And as I struggled inside my being with should I or shouldn’t I leave the theatre, I identified with the turmoil Riley was experiencing in her head, her headquarters. And while Sadness ends up being the emotional star of this movie, I did experience this emotion because I stayed until the end of this film and sadly left the theatre.

Unauthorized ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ Movie In The Works At Lifetime

Lifetime wants to show you what really happened behind the scenes of all your favorite shows.

Hot on the heels of Lifetime’s “The Unauthorized ‘Full House’ Story” comes “The Unauthorized ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ Story,” according to The Hollywood Reporter

Anyone who watched the series, which aired for 10 seasons throughout the ’90s, knows that just as much drama went down off-screen for many of the cast members as it did for their characters at the Peach Pit each week. Perhaps this could finally be a story in Lifetime’s “Unauthorized” series that may actually be worth being told.

According to Lifetime, the made-for-TV movie will specifically focus on the show’s first four seasons, “highlighting the drama between cast members and producers both on- and off-set, including the series’ journey from several near-cancellations to its massive success and imprint in the cultural zeitgeist and lasting impression it has made on millions of people to this day.”

Again, we hope it’s just as campy and gloriously unwatchable as last year’s “Unauthorized ‘Saved by the Bell’ Story.”

The Kurt Cobain Movie You Need to See: “Soaked In Bleach”

2015-06-11-1434036446-2519249-SIB_Poster.jpg

I grew up in Seattle. I experienced the same rainy, dreary weather, sometimes for 20 to 30 days straight, that is often cited as the reason why our music became grunge music in the soggy, moss-covered environs of the Pacific Northwest. We were stuck inside. Grey. Dark. Gloomy. Depressing. People said, “But of course you would come up with grunge music!” This, as the narrative goes, then led to the grungification of the rest of the planet.

Really?

All because of this participatory precipitation?

Talk about a load of Ballard BS! A Muckleshoot of Misperception I say! (sorry, local references)

Sure, you couldn’t always go outside, but how many bands in warm weather regions actually practiced outside? I’ve traveled the world and I can tell you there are many misperceptions about the great northwest — the people, the climate and the music. Some are easy to refute, such as, “Good God, it always rains in Seattle!” Well, it rains more annually in New York City and Atlanta than Seattle, so take that!

Others are not so easy to refute.

Especially one.

And it’s a big one.

Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain committed suicide.

Many have tried for years to refute, to disprove the Seattle Police Department’s official cause of death. Many believe Cobain did not commit suicide and was, in fact, murdered. There are nearly as many theories as to what happened to Cobain as there are rainy days in the Emerald City.

So numerous are these theories that they often become a downpour of information, where individual droplets, of both fact and fiction, rain down into one big, murky puddle of what I call faction (clearly not your traditional faction definition). Fact and fiction have become indistinguishable from each other.

Some of these factions have come in the form of movies, both documentary and scripted. I’ve seen nearly all of them. Some of are the definition of faction and others, while earnest, miss the mark.

Until now.

That’s because I just finished watching Benjamin Statler’s documentary, Soaked In Bleach, for the second time in as many days. Yes, twice.

I don’t want to sit here in my New York City hotel room and tell you all the reasons why Soaked In Bleach works so well, because I’d rather you watch it and experience it for yourself. I’m not a fan of reviews that exhaustively tell you everything about a movie. (Look, I didn’t even want to know the sex of my children before they were born. There are too few real surprises in life anymore.)

But I will say a few things why I believe this documentary works where most have failed.

First, Statler does something very well that I usually do not like at all in a documentary: re-enactments. They often take me right out of the narrative, they are poorly acted and just seem like bad movie-making 101.

In fact, the director starts off the movie with a re-enactment. I have to be honest, I thought to myself, “For the love of God, really?”

However, Statler handles it brilliantly.

The director intersperses re-enactments with the real audio recordings from back-in-the-day and marries it to the scene we are watching on the screen. So, you will hear the real audio from those tape recordings, noted by a small text on the screen of who is speaking and then that character will come into view on screen and he/she will be saying those same words, but it’s not the actors voice at first. He’s dubbed the real recording over the actor’s voice and then blends out the old recording to bring in the actors voice. It’s a great way to add authenticity to the scene as a tangible, factual reference and not take us out of the documentary feel. The film feels like a documentary, but with feature-film qualities. I actually found myself looking forward to those re-enactment scenes.

“We knew we had the straight documentary,” Statler told me recently, “And we had the context of the story in real time from Tom Grant’s recordings.”

Tom Grant is the private investigator hired by Cobain’s wife, Courtney Love. Love hired Grant to find her husband because she assumed he was missing. Cobain had been in rehab and had left the facility without contacting her. Grant has hours and hours of audio recordings of in-person conversations as well as phone conversations with nearly everyone involved with Kurt and Courtney during the time period leading up to and after the death of Kurt. It provides for a fascinating narrative.

Grant is a lightening rod, not only in the film, but in real life to this very day in his relentless pursuit to get fundamental questions answered regarding Kurt’s death. Grant’s taken a public beating for this for years, but continues to soldier on.

And what may finally vindicate Grant just a bit is what Statler has been able to do in this film – get some of the actual players surrounding the death of Kurt to speak on camera, some for the first time ever.

From paramedic John Fisk, the first responder on the scene with the Seattle Fire Department describing what he witnessed to Norm Stamper, Seattle Chief of Police on the day Kurt was killed stating there were, indeed, investigative mistakes, these first person accounts add chilling, factual insight.

“We should have, in fact, taken steps to study patterns involved in the behavior of key individuals who had a motive to see Kurt Cobain dead,” says Stamper in the film.

“It’s about right and wrong, it’s about honor, it’s about ethics,” Stamper continues, “And if we didn’t have it right the first time we better damn well get it right the second time.”

The second time they are talking about is re-opening the investigation. In fact, director Statler has enlisted some of the top forensic scientists and homicide experts to study the facts of the case and they all, unequivocally, call for the case to be re-opened.

“Having world-renowned experts back up Tom Grant’s investigation,” said Statler, “and calling for a re-opening of the case based on the fact of the Seattle Police Department’s flawed investigation is key to this film’s authenticity.”

I asked Statler why this documentary? Why now? What is his motivation?

“I’m not motivated by punishment,” Statler said. “It is unbearable to me that there is this acceptance of Cobain’s suicide despite this mountain of evidence out there that doesn’t add up”

Statler and every expert point to one small item, on just one line, on the police report from the day Kurt’s body was found. That item turned out to be, in their words, the biggest mistake of the case.

It is shocking.

What is it? You’ll just have to watch Soaked In Bleach. Maybe even twice.

“Entourage” the Movie – Who Cares?

Movie Review – Jackie K Cooper
“Entourage” (Warner Brothers)

“Entourage” is a movie made for the fans of the popular HBO series of the same name. For those, like me, who never saw an episode this is a movie full of mystery. What is the basis for the plot; who are these actors; and more than that who are these characters and why should audiences care about them. I didn’t know them going in and I didn’t know or care about them as I was leaving.

As far as I can gather Vincent Chase (Adrian Grenier) is a young actor who has had some success in Hollywood. He now lives and works in Hollywood and has brought some of his good pals from back east to town with him. These include Eric (Kevin Connolly), Turtle (Jerry Ferrara) and his brother Johnny (Kevin Dillon). They make up his entourage. Ari (Jeremy Piven) is the man who discovered him and he is now running a Hollywood studio and wants Vincent to star in his next big movie.

Vincent agrees as long as he can direct the film and Eric can produce it. Johnny must also have a good role in the movie while Turtle is along for the ride. Larsen McCredle (Billy Bob Thornton) and his son Travis (Haley Joel Osment) are the money men behind the film. When the film goes over budget Ari has to try to wheedle some more money from McCredle.

While all of this is going on the audience gets a look at what goes on behind the scenes in Hollywood. It basically looks like Beach Party Bingo with bikinied girls making up most of the cast. To make it authentic people/actors such as Liam Neeson, Kelsey Grammer, Mark Rubin, Gary Busey, Bob Saget and Jon Favreau pop up for a quick hello.

The subplots involve Turtle trying to get a date with Rhonda Rousey. Eric is coping with possibly two pregnancies. Johnny is trying to be more than a joke as an actor. And Ari is trying to control his anger. All four don’t add up to a smidgen of something interesting.

Grenier is one of the least charismatic actors I have seen on screen since Jake Gyllenhaal tromped through “The Prince of Persia”. Dillon is totally unlikeable as Johnny but that’s okay because I think he was intended to be unlikeable. Billy Bob is once more playing what we think of as “the Billy Bob Thornton” character, while Osment looks like he would enjoy seeing some “dead people” if that would liven things up.

The only actor to make a good impression is Piven as Ari Gold. He is in totally manic mood and it gives the film the little energy it has. I would happily go see a movie about Ari Gold if they would leave all those other characters at home.

The movie is rated R for profanity and nudity.

The fans of the TV series must have been a loud group because they got a slick movie made that takes up supposedly where the series left off. Here’s to their success in getting it done. But now that it is made, how are you going to sell it to the rest of the country?

I scored “Entourage” a crowded 4 out of 10.

This Man’s Action Movie Proposal Is As Badass As It Is Beautiful

Seth McMurry’s girlfriend Cymber wanted one thing from her marriage proposal: to be surprised. And that’s exactly what she got.

On May 7, Seth and Cymber were planning to help Seth’s brother with an action video he was filming for his YouTube channel AndrewMFilms.

Credit: BuzzFeed via YouTube

“I knew that would be a great way to be able to get the proposal on video without her knowing what was going on,” Seth told The Huffington Post. “She thought her and I were going to be in one of his videos but little did she know I had planned everything.”

They filmed the video, which features some impressive special effects, on top of a parking garage in Little Rock, Arkansas. In the last scene, Seth saves Cymber from being hit by a crashing helicopter. She falls to the ground and when she picks herself back up, Seth calls her name.

What Does it Take to Make a Movie? Wisdom from Effie Gray Producer Donald Rosenfeld

When he was just a boy, one of the first movies that really stood out for Donald Rosenfeld was the epic World War II film, Bridge on the River Kwai. “My parents first took me to the Cinerama at age five in St. Louis where I grew up, probably because there was no babysitter available that night,” he recalls. In fact, many images from the film continue to stay with him. And the movie’s essential concepts came to represent the nature of producing films. “You have to build this thing and yet remain conscious that you’re also in the world. Because you can lose your life, (or your movie),” Rosenfeld explains. “You need to have a foot in the mad quixotic void of making a movie, but also be able to remain a centered human being. And I think that’s often forgotten in Hollywood today.”

He was also enchanted by the Robert Aldrich classic The Longest Yard which starred Burt Reynolds. “It’s set in a prison and about a football game. It showed me that you could make a movie about something impossible, which no one would ever do based on potential commerce alone,” says Rosenfeld.

Yet, somehow the film lives somewhere between total tragedy and comedy, and survives. And a magnificent movie was created breaking all the rules. If you create movies based on Instinct and passion rather than demographics and marketing concerns, you have a chance at greatness.

Since the the 1980s, Rosenfeld has been producing great movies like Howards End, Mr. and Mrs. Bridge, Remains of the Day, Surviving Picasso, Tree of Life and Jodorowsky’s Dune. Rosenfeld was the President of the esteemed film company Merchant Ivory Productions for more than a decade.

And just last month, he debuted the film Effie Gray starring a stellar cast of actors including Dakota Fanning, Greg Wise, Emma Thompson, Julie Walters, Tom Sturridge, Derek Jacobi, Robbie Coltrane, David Suchet and Claudia Cardinale. In Emma Thompson’s original screenplay, based on a true story, a teenage Effie Gray, and adult art critic John Ruskin are in a loveless unconsummated marriage during the Victorian era when divorce was not an option. “It’s a very modern story that seemed alive,” says Rosenfeld. “There’s just so much about marriage, about discontent.”

While many are intrigued about movie making, most don’t really know the nuts and bolts — what it actually takes to get a film to the screen. Rosenfeld shared the nitty gritty of what producing a film involves.

Hire a great diva-free actress like Dakota Fanning to star in your film.

Every day, she’s grateful for all. She’s like Paul Newman who I worked with on Mr. and Mrs. Bridge. They embrace the luck of their life as opposed to resting on their laurels. They’re really out working. They’re out trying things. She’s like a great Hollywood star from the Garbo era.

Also, Dakota knew everybody’s name from the smallest crew member to the most elevated. She was as interested in talking to Emma Thompson as she was our Key Grip and Electrics. She’s a real person and that’s not that often the case, especially with people who have grown up in this business.

It can go either way. But she was completely engaged. One day she was sweeping the streets with me when we had to rush and get a set ready. She was always saying, ‘What can I do? Put me to work.’

When making a movie, expect the unexpected and carry on.

Movies are full of tremendous disasters — natural and otherwise. On the Ballad of the Sad Café a tornado literally brought down our western town set. We had rented Willie Nelson’s property and the set just disappeared!

We rebuilt it all and then 45 days later continued shooting. But then the IRS came and locked up the whole set because Willie had some tax issues — we weren’t allowed access to our new set. We eventually enlisted Senator Moynihan to come and fight for us against the Revenue Service foreclosure, and we were able to finish the movie.

That movie was just fraught with problems. But you solve them. And sometimes those problems lead to a better movie. So many times people say, ‘It’s raining: we cannot shoot today.’ But rain in general looks beautiful on film.

I say, ‘So we’ll shoot something. Let’s make something out of it.’ And some of those shots become the most beautiful shots in the movie. Whatever befalls you, you have to continue shooting your movie — especially on location with a tight budget.

Always keep your cast and crew happy.

Every day is different and kind of a performance. You are taking care of 150 to 200 people. And you have to be resilient and open to that actual day. It really is exciting. You have to keep people inspired and entertained and keep morale up.

You have to figure out a way to do it every day. When I was down in Texas and we had a terrible tornado, we had Vanessa Redgrave, Rod Steiger starring in the film. We had Walter Lassally on camera, who had shot Tom Jones and invented something called Day for Night which allows you to shoot in the day but it’s night.

We had Willie Nelson there because it was his ranch and we had Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson.

I called Zakir Hussain who’s a great tabla player who had done film scores for us. He’s now become a kind of a rock star with the Grateful Dead: I said, ‘You’re coming down here.’ He said, ‘What do you mean?’

I said, ‘Where are you?’ He said, ‘I’m in San Anselmo, California. I’m not going anywhere.’ I said ‘you’re coming here.’ So, he finally came and he did an Indian Rag, playing all night. Willie eventually joined. Waylon Joined and Kris Kristofferson, who was visiting Vanessa Redgrave, In the end we had a concert and crew and cast party that went on forever.

We brought in wagons of beer and barbecue. I have to say for the next six weeks, my crew was pretty happy. And these were 115 degree days with rattle snakes everywhere. Willie and his family were amazing. They took such good care of us.

The film producer is responsible for everything.

It’s as if the director is the errant son and the producer is the father. The only directors I know who are kings are their own producers — people like Steven Spielberg or Francis Ford Coppola who are also producers.

That’s when a director starts to really run the show. On my movies I choose who works with the director, whether it’s the art director, the costumer, composer or the actors. I’m the final word. I certainly permit my director to come and be part of it and I’ll listen to him.

But I have final cut of the movie. I finance them independently: So I make my movies with the huge collaboration of 200 people!

But the bottom line is we make them very cheaply but beautifully, so the money’s on screen. I have a producing partner, Andreas Roald, who’s a former Norwegian television star turned producer. And he’s been an incredible complement to what I do and an all-around good guy. He and myself really decide everything.

A good attitude will get you far.

Producers watch everything. I watch all the footage. I can tell people, we really blew it or we have to do more. In so many cases you’re far off and away, so you’ve got to find a way to make things work and you do.

Sometimes I’ll fly out, look at footage and fly back four hours later. A movie is something that you experience. It’s not perfect. If it were, it would be ugly. The beauty of movies is that something great can come out of near disaster, something beautiful that comes out of even mistakes.

Sometimes I’ll jump in and be in a scene because we’ve lost an actor. I can be the back of their head. Whatever it takes you do it. You do what you need to do. But most of all you’re thinking about tomorrow.

You’re thinking things are going this way today. How are we going to get tomorrow to be even better? How can I make that happen? How can I make it work? And you do it. And it’s always a challenge, but a happy challenge because you’re making your movie. How many people get to do that?

Being a film producer is like being the captain of a ship.

Almost every shooting day, you’re the captain. But you also have to go down with the ship. i am blamed for everything. Everyone has demands and needs and often excuses, And the reality is you have to stick by the movie and be the one who’s smiling.

One thing (producer) Ismail Merchant showed me from the beginning is no matter what happens, you’ve got to get it done. But you also have to do it with some level of kindness and charm because we’re making these movies from our hearts.

Find material that you love and feel passionate about.

I loved Effie Gray. Until this point, you’ve never seen a Victorian movie about people like us, They’re always about the kings and queens and Victoria and her lovers or young Albert.

I just couldn’t find a Victorian movie that wasn’t based on a novel, that was real – that actually dealt with non-aristocratic, non-royal people. Where we could get some sense that this fascinating era is the beginning of the modern age. I thought you can only do it through people who aren’t hidden in the history with all the regalia.

Effie Gray had been taken out of an idyllic, agrarian life up in Scotland. She’s brought down to London and she thinks the city’s going to offer great wonders. She really got into this hopeless arranged marriage.

Emma had been reading Parallel Lives:Five Victorian Marriages by Phyllis Rose. I knew the book and the stories. And I really wanted to do something original with an original script.

There’s just so much about hope filled marriage, met with sadness and discontent. It’s a very modern story and seemed alive. I thought let’s go make this.

Sweet Painting Lady: Ciara McAvoy Resurrects the Art of the Movie Poster

“Art is not just a part of my life. It IS my life. It gives me breath. We are eternally entwined.” This is the mantra of Scottish artist Ciara McAvoy, a painter renowned for her stunning oil work, which the Glasgow-born artist has used to create some of the most iconic movie posters in modern times. Inspired by her French grandfather, a pre-WW II portraitist who gained fame at Montmartre, McAvoy’s interest in drawing and painting film-related subjects began after her first viewing of Star Wars as a child.

“I started drawing at eight and painted and sold my first oil, entitled Cops, when I was only twelve years old, so I guess I can say that I was born to be an artist,” McAvoy recalled in a 2014 interview with David Bateman of STV Glasgow. In an age when the artist’s brush has been replaced by the computer keyboard, McAvoy celebrates the analog artistry of old by creating all of her commissions by hand. “I’m part of a growing group of artists and collectors who believe in the future and importance of hand-drawn art as part of movie promotion,” McAvoy said.

Influenced by legendary names in the movie poster trade such as Amsel, Drew Struzan, John Alvin, the brothers Hildebrandt and Tom Jung, McAvoy works almost exclusively in oils for her movie posters. However, she has built a broad repertoire of skills in other media (acrylic, watercolor, graphite, charcoal and pastels) as well as storyboarding, animation, character design and matte painting. She studied at L’École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris, where she obtained her Diplôme Supérieur d’Art Plastique (D.S.A.P). Later, she expanded her artistic skill set to include costume design and historical fashion, which now play an integral supporting role in her posters and illustrations. She describes her modus operandi as “photorealism applied to movie posters.”

“I think a great movie poster is like the setting on a beautiful diamond ring or the package on an elaborate gift, which for potential fans is the movie itself,” McAvoy said. “A beautifully wrapped present gets people excited to open it up and see what’s inside. That’s what really great film art, in terms of movie posters, aspires to do, and should do if the artist is at their best.”

Coming off wins at the prestigious Davey Awards and the 44th Annual Creativity International Print & Packaging Design Awards, McAvoy was lauded with five awards at the 2015 Communicator Awards, held in Beverly Hills, California in April. McAvoy received recognition for her work on posters for  Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, X-Men and Filth. She is elated to have her illustrations recognized again.

Some of the most notable films for which she has created promotional images include box office classics such as Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Legend, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, Interview With The Vampire, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, Sherlock Holmes, Mission Impossible, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, X-Men: First Class. Indie titles include Filth, starring James McAvoy (no relation), Imogen Poots and Joanne Froggatt (Downton Abbey). Recently, Ciara McAvoy was commissioned to design an alternative poster for director Paul McGuigan’s upcoming Victor Frankenstein, also starring James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe.

The discarded 1931 Frankenstein poster that sold for $ 358,000.

Victor Frankenstein is a masterwork I simply had to pay tribute to; Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is one of those time-honored subjects that has not only stood the test of time but has spawned fifty-plus films — many of them great classics — since 1910. Of course, along with those classic films come the gorgeous, memorable — not to mention highly prized — movie posters. For example, an original poster from 1935’s The Bride of Frankenstein went for a record-breaking $ 262,000 at auction last year and just last month a discarded 1931 Frankenstein movie poster was sold for $ 358,500 at Heritage Auctions.

McAvoy admits that one of the major highlights of her career, was the day she was contacted by LucasFilm, who wanted to commission her work. It was all born out of a sense of frustration with where movie poster art was headed. “After movie posters had become a simple digital photo, I starting trying to improve the design and give a second life to advertising campaigns stuck in the new, uninventive, often uninspiring rut of photos,” McAvoy remembers. “Since my movie art was good, the movie theater directors started to stick my posters on their walls and I began to seriously consider a career in the movie poster industry. I sent my work to movie magazines and almost immediately got published. A few years later, Lucasfilm contacted me and ask for my portfolio. Obviously that day was rather a good one!” Some of McAvoy’s original work adorns the walls of Rick McCallum, producer of the second Star Wars Trilogy.

McAvoy also remembers how the Victor Frankenstein project came to light. “Now, there’s a great story behind this poster, too. An incredible thing happened at the start of the project; I was invited to have a look around during filming in Longross Studios, a film and television production facility near Chobham to get a feel for the movie. This never happens! I was shown sets, costumes, make-up, etc. and had some wonderful chats with the director and actors while they were shooting one night. James McAvoy even ended up showing me some picture albums of various scenes so that I would have something to work with. Honestly though, I think he felt I needed a little help since my initial composites mixed up McAvoy’s and Daniel Radcliffe’s outfits,” she says with a smile.

Ciara with actor James McAvoy, still in make-up as the titular character in the upcoming Victor Frankenstein.

To prevent security leaks, no one was granted access authorization to the movie set photos, so home I went with nothing but my cherished memories and vivid images imprinted in my mind’s eye. I’m known for my realistic detail work — usually conjured up by my imagination — but this time I had the opportunity to apply my unique style by accessing my memories of the set details. It was the critical ingredient to my Victor Frankenstein poster, the key to ‘unleashing my final creation’ and immortalizing Victor, the complex man and crazed mastermind behind the ‘monstrous figure that holds unimaginable terror for anyone in its path,’ the one we all know and love as Frankenstein.

Ciara McAvoy is currently concentrating on her next film poster project, Enemy of Man, starring Sean Bean, Rupert Grint and directed by Vincent Regan.

From the Big Screen to the Playroom — Take Home the Summer Blockbuster With Great Movie Toys

Summertime means summer blockbuster movies for the whole family. Trust me: Kids movies are not just for kids and this summer’s lineup will have adults LOL-ing just as much as the kiddies! Plus, when the movie is over, you know your kids will want to bring the magic home and — thanks to a huge array of super fun toys — it’s easy for them to do so. Here’s a peek at the movies your whole family will love this summer and some of the awesome toys that will be available along with them.

Earlier this year, we were briefly reunited with our Disney Frozen friends in the Frozen Fever short. Okay, so it’s not a full-length feature film to fill our Frozen void, but it did succeed in keeping our own Frozen fever hot, hot, hot! Every single time poor Elsa sneezes, little baby snowmen — or Snowgies — pop up. Fans will love the Disney Frozen Fever Snowgie Chatterbacks, from Just Play. They are adorable and repeat everything that you say, so don’t be afraid to let them help you get the “clean your room” message across twice (or 40 times).

2015-05-20-1432139230-9326793-JustPlay.FozenChatterbacks.jpg

Avengers: Age of Ultron hit theaters earlier this month, and Hasbro has so many great role-play items that let kids become their favorite superhero. In the movie, the ultimate battle takes place between the Avengers and Ultron, a robot designed by the Avengers. Ultron was developed to keep the peace, but when he decides that the only way to do that is to end humanity, well, let’s just say the Avengers have their work cut out for them. From the Hulk’s grippy fists to Thor’s mighty hammer, kids will have a blast!

On June 12, after two decades of false starts, Jurassic World will open its doors for business. And so it’s no surprise that dinosaurs are stomping and chomping through the toy aisles in a big way this year. Lego has a whole line of sets that lets kids recreate their favorite scenes from the movie and also include cool collectible dino figures. The Playskool Heroes line has a Tyrannosaurus Rex figure with fierce chomping action that kids can use to gobble up the human figure.

We’ve all been waiting anxiously for the Minions movie for a long time. Well I’m here to tell you that wait is not in vain, and you definitely won’t be disappointed with these mischievous creatures. Bring the fun home with Tumblin’ Stuart, from Thinkway Toys, or make a splash at the pool with the Minion swim goggles or goggle kickboard from Skyrocket Toys.

2015-05-20-1432139373-4443476-ThinkwayToys.TumblinStuart.jpg

And last but not least, Disney•Pixar’s Inside Out will not only have your entire family laughing, but also relating to all the emotions that kids and grown-ups face on a daily basis as they watch Riley, her parents, and their emotions tackle life’s challenges. Adults will laugh and shake our heads, while the movie serves as teachable moments for our kids’ social development, especially when accompanied by a great line of plush emotions from Tomy that have the voices of the characters built in.

You don’t have to wait for a rainy day to dive into this lineup. Movies make great family day trips. So grab the fam and head to theater — and don’t forget the popcorn!

This Movie Theater PSA Is Inspiring Kids To Become Teachers

A public service announcement encouraging young people to become teachers has been playing in hundreds of movie theaters around the country in recognition of national teacher appreciation week May 4 to May 9.

The PSA, called #TEACHNow, has been playing in nearly 400 theaters as part of Participant Media’s TEACH Campaign, which aims to stimulate great teaching.

“My goal with #TEACHNow is to visually illustrate that teaching is so important that it deserves its own recruitment piece featuring teachers as the heroic, life-changing, amazing people they are,” Lesley Chilcott, director of the ad, said in a press release. “We need to show our most talented youth that teaching is an incredible career choice.”

“We’re really trying to create an awareness that innovative passionate students should consider teaching,” Lisa Zimble, director of the TEACH Campaign, told The Huffington Post.

Kids who went to the movies this week to see superhero shows like, “The Avengers: Age of Ultron,” may have left inspired to become a different kind of superhero.

Watch the PSA above.

At the heart of it all is The Little Girl (Mackenzie Foy), who’s being prepared by her mother (Rachel McAdams) for the very grown-up world in which they live – only to be interrupted by her eccentric, kind-hearted neighbor, The Aviator (Jeff Bridges). The Aviator introduces his new friend to an extraordinary world where anything is possible. A world that he himself was initiated into long ago by The Little Prince (newcomer Riley Osborne). It’s here that The Little Girl’s magical and emotional journey into the universe of The Little Prince begins. And it’s where The Little Girl rediscovers her childhood and learns that ultimately, it’s human connections that matter most, and that it is only with heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.

Best-Dressed at the MTV Movie Awards: J.Lo, Scarlett Johansson, and More!

If you were really craving an awards show red carpet, prepare to say a big thank goodness—the MTV Movie Awards happened tonight! There were some pretty big names, including Cara Delevingne, Jennifer Lopez, and Scarlett Johansson in a look that felt different than anything else she’s ever worn before. Now, let’s get down to business.

cara-delevingne-purple-dress-mtv-music-awards-2015
Cara walked the red carpet in a long-sleeve, boho-chic plum colored mini dress by Reem Acra. It’s the first of what’s likely going to be many a movie awards for her; she was supporting her upcoming turn in Paper Towns (our first chance to catch her on the big screen!).

scarlett-johansson-pink-jumpsuit-mtv-music-awards-2015
I’ve gotten used to seeing Scarlett in retro cuts and silhouettes made for a classic siren, but she switched things up on me this time in a hot pink Zuhair Murad jumpsuit with laser-cut details at the neck. I love! Her shoes are Sophia Webster.

brittany-snow-pink-red-dress-mtv-movie-awards-2015
Giving us another reminder that hot pink and red look so good together: Brittany Snow, in a bold color-blocked Brandon Sun dress finished off with strappy nude Jerome C. Rousseau heels.

bella-thorne-printed-dress-mtv-movie-awards-2015
Prints aren’t terribly commonplace on the red carpet, but when they do have a moment, it’s nearly guaranteed to be a head-turning one. Such was the case for Bella Thorne in this bright, pattern-on-pattern party dress by Peter Pilotto.

jennifer-lopez-black-suit-mtv-movie-awards-2015
Jennifer Lopez skipped the regular cocktail frock in favor of a sultry Versus by Versace suit jacket and mini skirt.

amy-schumer-black-white-dress-mtv-movie-awards-2015
Host Amy Schumer was already in something different the first time she appeared onstage, but I liked the black and white Balmain dress she wore on the carpet too much to not call it out. The geometric lines and contrasting colors look fantastic.

So, who’s your favorite from the night?
