The 3 Changes You Need to Make for Great Spring Skin

For Allure, by Lauren Hubbard.

2016-04-08-1460131374-1595039-springskincareninaricci.jpg
Photo: Leslie Kirchhoff/Allure (Photographed At The Nina Ricci Fall 2016 Show)

If you’re a dedicated Allure reader, it won’t come as a shock that you need to switch up your skin-care products with the seasons: lighter, more sheer for summer; pile on the moisture in winter. But what about the in-between seasons, like now-upon-us spring, when the temperature and humidity start to rise but you’re still pulling on a jacket instead of sweating literally everywhere? Here are the changes to make to stave off the great weather-changing skin freakout.

Lighten up. The low humidity levels and bracing winds of winter call for a heavy-duty moisturizer, even for oilier skin types. But as warmer weather rolls in with those famous April showers, December-appropriate lotions start to feel pore-smothering. Try switching to a lighter gel-cream formula, like Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel or Philosophy Take a Deep Breath Oil-Free Energizing Oxygen Gel Cream Moisturizer. The magic combo of lightweight hyaluronic acid and occlusive glycerin pulls in water from the air and locks it into skin so you stay hydrated without feeling like you’re wearing a blanket on your face.

Related: 50 New Drugstore Beauty Products We’re Obsessed With

Scrub down. The sudden influx of moisture out in the world can also mean a sudden excess of moisture on your skin, which can in turn lead to totally unspringy dullness and clogged pores. While you have to be careful with overexfoliating delicate winter skin, spring is the perfect time to step up your regimen slightly. Since you’re not in full-on summer mode yet, try an exfoliator that uses salicylic acid, like Paula’s Choice 2% BHA Liquid, instead of a harsh scrub. “Salicylic acid is excellent at removing pore-clogging oil, and it doesn’t traumatize the skin like a physical exfoliant,” says Joshua Zeichner, a dermatologist in New York City.

Do some spring cleaning. As with your moisturizer, you need to tone it down when it comes to your daily cleanser. If you’ve been favoring a skin-coddling cleansing balm or cream cleanser for the harsh winter months, swapping it out for a foaming gel will help clear away any excess oil from the naturally shine-prone T-zone. We like Eau Thermale Avene Cleanance Gel Cleanser, which cleans thoroughly without stripping skin and also has oil-controlling monolaurin to help your skin stay balanced.

5 Movie Character Costumes That Need to Be Retired Immediately

We all* love using October 31st as an excuse to play dress-up as our favorite film heroes and heroines, but there is a difference between classic characters (Ghostbusters, Holly Golightly, James Bond) and characters du jour. We are currently in The Era Of Frozen And Breaking Bad, but should Elsa and Walter White still be super popular five or ten years from now? Probably not.

The following five costumes are long past their cultural moments and yet remain stubbornly prevalent, making them less “throwback” and more “[yawn].” Please allow me to offer alternatives that, while perhaps unoriginal, aren’t ubiquitous.

1. The Corpse Bride from The Corpse Bride

Literally any character in literally any Tim Burton film makes a guaranteed great costume, so why do we always see a hundred blue-faced brides shivering in the late-October night? My theory is that, Lord knows why, many American women own wedding-like lacy white dresses we are looking for an excuse to destroy. If this is the case for you, I suggest Cady’s “ex-wife” costume from Mean Girls. It works on two levels: Your dumb friends will think you are an “ex-wife.” Your cool friends will know you are Cady as an “ex-wife.”

2. The Joker

This costume makes me uncomfortable. Why do so many people find it so fun to pretend to be a psychotic killer from a movie that came out years ago? Don’t say it has nothing to do with Heath Ledger’s death; humans are sickos. And don’t say you’re the Jared Leto or Jack Nicholson version; nobody believes you. This costume is either done well and is terrifying, or is done poorly and makes the wearer look like a child playing with mommy’s makeup. Just be Beetlejuice.

3. Margot Tenenbaum

We get it, you’re a special girl, but this is the Uggs-and-leggings of Halloween costumes. If you insist on looking insufferably vintage chic, throw on the last multi-colored nightmare you bought at Anthropologie (you know you have one) and be Amelie.

4. Jack Sparrow

The Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise ceased to be relevant ages ago. If you want to be a badass, be Han Solo. If you want to be a beloved Disney character, be Mr. Incredible. If you want to wear eyeliner, wear eyeliner. It’s your life.

5. Nina in Black Swan

So your fancy outfit was too short and sparkly to turn it into a Corpse Bride ensemble, eh? Fear not, there are two beautiful, hard-working real-life women you can dress up as in a tutu or leotard: Misty Copeland and Michelle Kwan! (Note: If you happen to be Caucasian and are thinking, wow, those women are so inspiring! I think I’ll change the pigment of my skin to look more like them, don’t. That’s racist. Just wear the outfit.)

6. Bonus! Marty McFly from Back To The Future

This costume has been steadily gaining popularity over the past few Halloweens, and it’s not hard to see why: dope ’80s reference, dope jacket-and-vest combo, and Michael J. Fox is a national treasure. And 2015, of course, is Back To The Future year. So, you know what? Be Marty. Everyone be Marty. Take your pictures. Get it out of your system. Because starting Halloween 2016, Marty McFly is on hiatus. If you’re not over your nostalgia by then, you’ll have to be Teen Wolf or Elliot from E.T. Make this the Halloween Of McFly. And then, stop.

*Unless you’re one of those people who doesn’t “do” Halloween, in which case, I pity you.

Artists Need to Make Peace With the Academic Life

It is said that when the Italian Renaissance artist Verrocchio saw the work of his student, Leonardo da Vinci, he decided to quit painting since he knew that his work had certainly been surpassed. The story is probably apocryphal — it is also told of Ghirlandaio when he first saw the work of Michelangelo, of the father of Pablo Picasso and of a few other pairings of artists — but the idea of a teacher selflessly stepping aside for the superior work of a pupil makes one’s jaw drop.

More likely, many artists who teach today would tend to agree with Henri Matisse who complained during his teaching years (1907-09), “When I had 60 students there were one or two that one could push and hold out hope for. From Monday to Saturday I would set about trying to change these lambs into lions. The following Monday one had to begin all over again, which meant I had to put a lot of energy into it. So I asked myself: Should I be a teacher or a painter? And I closed the studio.”

Many, if not most, of the world’s greatest artists have also been teachers. However, between the years that Verrocchio and Matisse were both working and teaching, the concept of what a teaching artist is and does changed radically. Verrocchio was a highly touted fifteenth century painter and sculptor, backed up with commissions, who needed “pupils” to be trained in order to help him complete his work. Lorenzo di Credi, Perugino and Leonardo all worked directly on his paintings as the final lessons of their education. It would never have occurred to Matisse to let his students touch his canvases. In the more modern style, Matisse taught basic figure drawing rather than how to work in the same style as himself.

Teaching now obliges an artist to instruct others in techniques and styles that, at times, may be wholly opposed to his or her own work. Even when the teaching and creating are related in method and style, instruction requires that activity be labeled with words, whereas the artist tries to work outside of fixed descriptions — that’s the difference between teaching, which is an externalized activity, and creating, which is inherently private and personal.

“The experience of teaching can be very detrimental to some artists,” said Leonard Baskin, the sculptor and graphic artist who taught at Smith College in Massachusetts between 1953 and 1974. “The overwhelming phenomenon is that these people quit being artists and only teach, but that’s the overwhelming phenomenon anyway. Most artists quit sooner or later for something else. You have to make peace with being an artist in a larger society.”

Artists make peace with teaching in a variety of ways. Baskin noted that teaching had no real negative effect on his art — it “didn’t impinge on my work. It didn’t affect it or relate to it. It merely existed coincidentally” — and did provide a few positive benefits. “You have to rearticulate what you’ve long taken for granted,” he said, “and you stay young being around people who are always questioning things.”

A number of artists note that teaching helps clarify their own ideas simply by forcing them to put feelings into words. Some who began to feel a sense of teaching burn-out have chosen to leave the academy altogether in order to pursue their own work while others bunch up their classes on two full days so as to free up the remainder of the week. Still others have developed strategies for not letting their classroom work take over their lives.

Painter Alex Katz, for instance, who taught at Yale in the early 1960s and at New York University in the mid-1980s, noted that he tried not to think about his teaching when he was out of the class – “out of sight, out of mind,” he said.

Others found their teaching had so little to do with the kind of work they did that forgetting the classroom was easy. Painter Philip Pearlstein, who has taught at both Pratt Institute and Brooklyn College, stated that his secret was to keep a distance from his students.

“I never wanted to be someone’s guru,” he said. “I never wanted to have any psychological or spiritual involvement with my students, getting all tangled up in a student’s personality or helping anyone launch a career. I call that using teaching as therapy and, when you get into that, you’re in trouble.”

However, Pearlstein claimed that “having a job has led to an intensification of my work. I had to use the little time I had to paint, and it made me work all that much harder. Something had to give, so I cut down on my social life. I decided it was more important to stay home and paint.”

Kim Kardashian West and sister Kylie Jenner were more subdued than usual. Kardashian-West wore a tan Balmain safari dress with cargo pockets, while Kylie wore a natural-colored rope macrame mini dress, also from Balmain. See all the looks in detail below and tell us your favorite in the comments!

Going for What I Need

2015-08-25-1440510016-4768132-onlytodayonlyforyou.JPG
Photo: I. Rimanoczy

When I was a pre-teenager I attended an “adults only” class in – German. The threshold was set at 16 and I was about 12, but they made an exception since they had no groups of my age and skill level. The downside was that the assignments were way over my head. I recall one paper we had to write that asked us to give our opinions about a statement of playwright Bertolt Brecht, “First the food, then the moral”. At my age, I was simply unable to ‘get it’. What was this all about? Many years later I learned that humans go through specific stages of moral development, and that some things that seem nonsensical at one age, become more relevant or meaningful sometime later in life.

What the German novelist was suggesting was that basic needs, like food, trump moral decisions. In other words, people can be ethical or fair only after they have met their basic needs. Not before.

This story was brought back to my mind by a news comment on how the California drought was causing farmers to dig deeper into the groundwater reservoirs. The reason is clear, as any farmer involved would explain: I simply need the water! If we have to dig a bit more, so be it. The crops are at stake. If we don’t water, they don’t grow. No crops, no business. No vegetables (or fruit, or wine, or raisins, or well fed cattle) to sell. No income. Consumers should see the point too. According to California law, anyone has the right to drill a well on their property and groundwater pumping is expected to replace 75 percent of the surface water deficit.

But something else is happening. With this increased sourcing of deeper groundwater, we are creating a vacuum in the deeper layers of the earth – and what happens when you take a brick out of a pile? The pile sinks. So the ground is sinking – at the scary rate of 2 inches a month in some places. This is two feet in a year.

Let me be share with you the candid question that I asked myself first: If my ground is higher or lower, what does it matter? Unless there is a sinkhole, of course. But those things don’t happen in California, only in Florida – (or do they?)

The answer came rapidly: sinking ground means that the very well sinks too. And so well owners just do what’s common sense – they dig deeper. “We are reaching into water levels that have been stored there for millions of years”, reflected Kim Hammond, a representative of Arthur and Orum Well Drilling Inc. in Fresno. It doesn’t stop there. Structures like roads and bridges also sink and break. This means that road safety is at stake, and insurance companies may take a look at this and, before going broke, review their premiums! Which may affect car owners and the trucking companies. In addition, the loss of roads will have an impact on transportation of goods, on the mobility of people, and on emergencies. Sinking grounds have exhumed pipelines that are supposed to be protected under the earth; moreover, the slope of the land can be altered, thus changing drainage patterns. Which can mean flooding. Which in turn can lead to the urgent necessity for additional money from tax payers. How much? No one knows. “No agency is tracking the sinking statewide, little public money has been put toward studying it and California allows agriculture businesses to keep crucial parts of their operations secret”, writes Nathan Halverson in Mother Jones.

And then, when the underground water sinks even a few inches upstream, it inhibits the flow downstream, making the picture even worse. Something I, as a Californian farmer, may not think of, since I am busy digging my well deeper because I need the water.

The big lesson that we are being taught is that thinking of what I need is never -ever- disconnected from considering what is best for us all. Until we learn this, we will be experiencing — and struggling to deal with — more and more systemic consequences.

You may call it moral or not. It’s simple connectedness, a law which we, self-centered as we are, cannot escape. The reason? That’s just how nature works.

Keywords: water, California, drought, farmers, Bertolt Brecht, water wells, Fresno, nature.

24 Questions Black People Need White People To Answer, Like Right Now

“Do y’all really think Miley is the one who created twerking? Really?”

This is just one of “24 Questions Black People Have For White People,” according to a new video released by Buzzfeed.

Five black people pose questions that open dialogue around white privilege, appropriation and more. Some other necessary questions they ask are: “Why is it that white crime is seen as an isolated incident but black crime is a representation of my entire community,” or “Why do you want to say the N-word so badly” and ”Why is it that white people always act as though they’ve discovered a new trend when people of color have been doing it for virtually years?”

White people often appropriate black culture without giving us credit — from slang words we created to the hairstyles we rock – and we want to know why!

See the rest of the questions in the video above.

8 Breathtaking Wedding Dresses From Two Designers You Need to Watch, Now

10 Behaviors Middle-Aged People Need To Stop Doing Already

Who doesn’t love a good silly list? In the comments below, please add to our serious and not-so-serious list of things and habits we should all probably have shed by now.

1. The “meh” shrug.

The “meh” shrug has emerged as a Donald Trump trademark. Please, before the “meh” shrug becomes as ubiquitous as cell phones in restaurants, can we please rid ourselves of this smug expression? We are reminded of Mad Magazine’s Alfred E. Neuman, who somewhat prophetically once asked, “How come we choose from just two people for President, and 50 for Miss America?” Now, did you just do a “meh” shrug when you read that?

2. The generational claim to the best. music. ever.

Yes, boomers owned Woodstock. They also can claim the British Invasion. But we can debate til the cows come home whether the music shaped the generation or was merely the background score to their coming of age. The fact that many boomers bemoaned how they had no idea what to listen to during the 1980s suggests that they weren’t trying very hard. The reality is that every generation has shunned the music of those that came later.  It’s time for boomers to stop with the claim of “nothing compares with The Grateful Dead” and asking their grandkids, “How can you listen to that stuff?” Truth is, weren’t The Animals a passing thing?

3. Buying furniture from Ikea.

Everyone appreciates how the Swedish put-it-together-yourself-if-you-dare furniture maker outfitted our first apartments. But like most first loves, we reach a point where it’s time to move on. As a matter of fact, most marriages would improve if there was a law that said all furniture must come preassembled.

The one exception to our Ikea-is-for-kids rule is their meatballs. Actually they have some neat decorating stuff too. But nothing that needs assembling.

4. Hanging on to unframed prints.

If you haven’t done it by now, that poster you picked up at the museum gift shop in Amsterdam in 2004 isn’t really ever likely to see a frame or the light of day. Why clutter your closets with things like this when by now you should have learned that buying a postcard (that fits in your purse) of your favorite painting makes more sense.

5. Keeping incomplete sets of cutlery.

“No, no, I need the forks with the round handles, not with the wavy lines on them!” Who among us hasn’t screamed those precise words at a child who is helping set the table while the dinner guests are ringing the doorbell? The simplest solution is to get rid of all the partial sets of cutlery and just get one complete set. While it is inevitable that the occasional spoon must be sacrificed to the Great Garbage Disposal God, when your utensil set reaches a critical mass of missing pieces, it’s time to toss and repeat.

4. Displaying your CD collections.

With rare exception, your CD collection probably shouldn’t be the focal point of your living room when you are 50. That said, we feel differently about your old vinyl collection, although do you really want visitors rifling through your albums and leaving smudge marks with their dirty paws?

5. Hanging on to your kid’s first school backpack.

At some point, you must accept that your 25-year-old will grimace when he sees that adorable photo of his first day of kindergarten where he’s wrapped himself around your knees begging you not to leave. Take it to the bank: He certainly won’t ever use the backpack he’s pictured wearing. And no, your grandchildren likely won’t either.

6. Stashing stuff under your bed.

Declutter the person and you declutter the mind. Under-the-bed storage is really just clutter. It largely consists of things that at one point you developed a sentimental and maybe even irrational attachment to. It’s stuff that you never use (or it wouldn’t be under the bed, would it?). Seriously, you never know what you’re going to find there. And giving your cat an additional hiding place will endear you to her, in her own way of course.

7. Accumulating piles of unopened mail.

First of all, why aren’t you opening your mail? Sure, most everything of importance is now handled online, but occasionally — stuck in between all the paper advertisements and unsolicited credit card offers — is something that is actually important. Collect your mail from the mailbox every day (overflowing mailboxes also tip off the bad guys that you may not be home) and spend 30 seconds dispensing with it.

 8. Thinking shot glasses, snow globes and refrigerator magnets  from your travels make you a collector.

There are many other ways to commemorate your travels besides identical Starbuck’s mugs that have different cities’ names on them. We prefer photos of you standing in front of the Eiffel Tower or posing by a Venetian gondola to shot glasses that were all manufactured in the same factory in China, no matter where you bought them. If you are going to buy souvenirs, why not at least have them be representative of the place you are visiting. Vermont maple syrup, Murano glass, French wine — all make more sense to us than a snow globe with the Hollywood sign in it. It doesn’t even ever snow there.

9. Covering your windows with anything other than drapes or blinds.

While you may have a soft spot for those Indian blankets we used to keep the sunlight from waking us up before noon in college, it’s a decorating style that will draw unwanted assumptions — and maybe even the attentions of Homeland Security — should you try it later in life.

 10. Showing signs you could be a hoarder.

Can we just say this up front? We think porcelain dolls are a little creepy. They look creepy and the idea that they are dolls but you can’t play with them is also creepy. Not judging, mind you. The broader point is that most collections are just dust collectors. They clutter our shelves and our lives. They take up space. Do you really need them? Would the money you spend collecting those dolls could be put to a much better use, saying, buying a real doll for a real kid who doesn’t have one.

4 Fashion Tips Women With a DD Cup and Over Need to Know

Women with large breasts have likely encountered a fashion situation, where a gorgeous something just doesn’t work with their curves. Just like different types of boobs require different bras, a large chest can require special clothes. It’s something the fashion industry knows, and brands are responding; New York City-based Reformation isn’t just sizing up but also crafting pieces especially for busty babes.

reformation-big-bust-collection-white-crop-top

Payton two-piece, $ 198, thereformation.com

“People don’t always think about the simple function that clothes have to perform on someone with a larger bust,” Reformation founder and CEO Yael Aflalo told Glamour. “In reality, a lot of times the dress needs to be fully redesigned, bringing the neckline up or down to accommodate larger cup sizes, thicker straps, and so on.”

Shop thick fabrics.
Your bra isn’t the only part of your outfit offering support. While underpinnings are vital, the garment itself can offer more holding power if it’s made out of a thicker material. Look for fabrics with some heft, like denim, brocade, and heavier-weight linen-cotton blends.

Look for wide straps.
Speaking of your bra, unless you’re in an intricately constructed garment with an interior corset, you really need to wear one (skipping is easier for women with A and B cups). As Aflalo pointed out, many designers simply size up their flimsy sundresses and tanks, keeping the skinny straps of the original. Smart design means widening the straps too so that you’re able to keep a bra out of sight.

Consider interesting necklines.
Large-chested women aren’t doomed to boring straight cuts that hit at the middle of the chest. “Interesting necklines look good on every body type,” Aflalo said. “They elongate the torso and draw the eyes upward.” Whether sexy laces, V-necks, or a dipping sweetheart, there are plenty of unique necklines that also allow for a bra.

Tailor things.
“Half the time it’s about having a good tailor on-hand,” Aflalo admitted. The custom look of having your pieces, expensive or not, fitted to your body is always important, but the magic can be especially potent if you’re busty.

Here’s All You Need to Know About the Candidates in Thursday’s GOP Debate

Ten of the Republican Party candidates for president will participate in the first debate of the 2016 Presidential Campaign on Thursday in Cleveland, Ohio.

Fox News, the official network of the GOP, has announced the names of nine of the candidates in the debate. The tenth will either be Ohio Gov. John Kasich or former Texas Gov. Rick Perry. What is it going to be, Fox, beets or liverwurst?

The GOP’s remaining candidates will sit on folding chairs at the back of the auditorium, with forlorn looks on their faces, wondering why they’re not one of the popular kids.

And we’re left to wonder: Why is there a debate in August 2015 for an election that’s 15 months way?

With so many candidates, where can you find the distinctive qualities of each one in a way that gives them the seriousness they deserve?

Right here:

Donald Trump said he would tab Sarah Palin for a top cabinet post if he was elected president. In response, Trump’s candidacy was immediately endorsed by the nation’s comedians, comedy writers, and editorial cartoonists.

Ben Carson said he doesn’t “really want to run” for president. We really don’t want you to run for president either.

Rand Paul said he supported his family’s opposition to the 1964 Civil Rights Act because it meant — and this was his quote — people couldn’t “have cigar bars anymore.” He really said that.

Rick Perry called the murders of nine blacks inside a Charleston, S.C., church an “accident.” This was a massacre. Perry is an accident.

Mike Huckabee does not accept evolution as a science. This is not surprising for someone who has spent so many years in GOP politics.

Mike Huckabee says that rapes, though “horrible tragedies,” have produced admirable human beings. He calls this “compassionate conservatism.”

Chris Christie puts the bully in bully pulpit.

Ted Cruz was not born in the United States. How can he run for president? Has anyone seen his birth certificate? What’s he hiding? He must be Kenyan and a Muslim. And a Socialist. And maybe even a Kardashian.

Marco Rubio gave up a promising career as a ventriloquist after learning while making a nationally televised speech that he could not talk and drink water at the same time.

Donald Trump says that global warming is real, but that it’s untouched by human hands. Like his hair.

As governor of Florida, Jeb Bush reportedly invested $ 1 million in state pension money to fund pornography films. Bush defended himself by saying he wanted to see people do to each other what his family has been doing to the American people for generations.

Rick Perry started wearing glasses to look smart. It hasn’t worked. He just looks like Rick Perry wearing glasses.

Jeb Bush told Fox News that, given the information he now has, he would have supported the invasion of Iraq. This means that George W. isn’t the dumbest Bush, and Rick Perry isn’t the dumbest person running for president.

Scott Walker is the only college dropout among the GOP candidates for president. Rick Perry and Mike Huckabee all graduated from college. How hard can it be?

John Kasich and Scott Walker hope to get elected president by attacking teachers. Why not? It worked so well in China, Iran, and Afghanistan.

You’ll Need More Than A Credit Card To Get Your Hands on Saint Laurent’s New Couture Collection

With price tags in the 5-digit range, couture collections are prohibitively expensive for most of us. But now, Saint Laurent is taking the already exclusive category to the next level.

Today, the French fashion house announced plans to bring back couture with “Yves Saint Laurent” Couture ivory silk label under the tutelage of designer Hedi Slimane. The house’s last couture show was in 2002 and designed by the late Yves Saint Laurent, who died in 2008.

The new collection of silky tuxedos and black column dresses will debut in Saint Laurent ads shot by Slimane next month. But shelling out tens of thousands of dollars for a look simply won’t be enough to get your hands on one. According to the brand’s chief executive, Francesca Bellettini, you’ll also need to be a “friend of the house”.

“Hedi Slimane decides these orders case by case. Unlike a couture collection, this is an even more exclusive definition,” Bellettini, told The New York Times. She also said that the collection will be available to actresses to be worn for red carpet events, such as the Oscars or the Cannes Film Festival.

We’ll keep you posted on the entire collection as it launches but, until then, we’re throwing it back to 2002—to Yves Saint Laurent’s very last couture collection, which is absolutely breathtaking.

Taylor Schilling’s ‘The Overnight’ Is The Refreshing Sex Comedy We Need

Take an anxious Seattle couple, drop them in a hipster-centric Los Angeles neighborhood for a night of alcohol, weed and some possible swinging, and you’re left with one bizarre, yet charming hangover. That’s essentially what “The Overnight” is, the new sex comedy from writer-director Patrick Brice that finds Taylor Schilling and Adam Scott’s married couple caught up in a night of absurd, hilarious and revealing situations.

While taking their son to play in a local park, Schilling’s Emily and Scott’s Alex meet Jason Schwartzman’s Kurt, your typical Silver Lake hipster artist. After inviting the couple over to his and his wife’s (Judith Godrèche) swanky home for their kids’ playdate, Emily and Alex are sucked into an all-night escapade that features everything from homemade porn videos to butthole paintings to full-frontal male nudity (yes, Scott and Schwartzman both flaunt prosthetic penises in the film). What could easily succumb to a cliché raunchy sex comedy dependent on puerile jokes soon flourishes into one of the most refreshing adult comedies in recent memory.

After “The Overnight” screened at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year, The Huffington Post sat down with stars Schilling and Godrèche to talk about filming the movie in less than two weeks and getting very up close and personal with each other.

There’s a really refreshing sense of humor to this film that makes it so charming. Was that something that drew both of you to the project?

Judith Godrèche: I read it and it was the funniest thing I ever read. I did a lot of comedies in France and thought, “Wow, if everything was as funny and well written as that, I’d be working nonstop.”

Taylor Schilling: Mark Duplass brought the movie to me. I read the script and it was a nutty script. […] The raunchiness and rawness in the script, sort of taking that to a really honest and gritty sensibility and seeing how to braid those two things together. There’s also a real kindness to the film that makes it funnier. I think in a lot of comedies, like situational comedies, the humor is very reactionary, and this is more based in emotional situations that I think make it so funny.

How did you avoid playing into the usual tropes of the sex-comedy genre?

Schilling: For me that was so much in the direction. That wasn’t the culture on the set.

Godrèche: There was an ambiance. We all signed to do this indie film which was almost like a first film. So there was something special going on already, no rehearsal, no fittings.  […] I think [Brice] likes actors who are funny, but in a subtle way. As far as Adam [Scott] can go, he’s a super funny actor, he’s a very internal actor too. It’s almost contemplative in a way. There are super funny lines, but they are delicate at the same time. It’s so well written, it’s hard to make it goofy. It’s the awkwardness that is so well done. It’s not vulgar. It’s sexy, but it’s awkward.

Both of your characters get progressively drunker and more stoned throughout the movie. What was it like to act out those different stages of being increasingly intoxicated?

Schilling: I think because we were doing it in order, it was kind of brilliant. Our call time was like 6:00 p.m. and the wrap would be around 7:00 a.m.

Godrèche: We would get stoned just by being tired.

The chemistry between all four of you is so magnetic. Did you spend a lot of time together before shooting?

Schilling: I had lunch with Adam and we had a group dinner. I think sometimes chemistry just appears. It’s something really wonderful in a cast. It either kind of emerges or it doesn’t.

Godrèche: I remember it as a dream honestly. I was so tired. Everything is like that to me, including the last scene which was really like — I was like, “I don’t know who I am anymore and I don’t care!” I was really taken by the moment in a very interesting way. I think this movie is so open-minded. It doesn’t tell exactly who you are at this moment in your life and maybe you don’t know either, and I kind of felt this.

Without spoiling anything, the last major scene with all four of you features some very bold sexual innuendos. By the time you filmed it were you all very comfortable together?

Schilling: We shot the whole thing in 11 days. That last scene — Patrick [Brice] and I talked [about how] that scene might not even exist. We shot sequentially then we’d watch and see if that actually existed in the dynamic of the characters.

That’s interesting because while watching it, it doesn’t feel like that scene will actually happen, but it plays very organically.

Godrèche: And it’s not like it’s announced, like “Here’s the big scene!” It comes so subtly and I think it’s charming, because the way it happens is pretty magical. I think [Patrick] is amazing and he has a way of capturing — he’s always dancing with us, the camera’s movement was always moving with us. It’s romantic, actually. When I see that scene, I feel like I’m watching a romantic movie.

“The Overnight” is now playing.

These Comics Absolutely Nail Why We Still Need Feminism

Cartoons and humor make a good pair. Add a side of feminism and you get Rebecca Cohen’s spot-on illustrations.

The cartoonist, who lives in Berkeley, Calif., spreads a feminist message on her Tumblr with illustrations that are both comedic and relatable.

rebecca cohen feminist comic

Cohen explained that her blend of cartoons, comedy and feminism grabs people’s attention and helps break down the stereotypes she’s encountered.

“Feminists get a bad rap as having no sense of humor, and I want to counter that image,” she said in an email to The Huffington Post.

Cohen is also the mind behind Gyno-Star, a female superhero she invented in high school who fights “the forces of evil and male chauvinism.”

Though the cartoons have an obvious layer of humor, Cohen’s work takes on serious issues women face, such as sexual assault. She also uses her work to highlight women making a difference. One of her recent cartoons, for instance, features Bree Newsome, the woman who took down the Confederate flag in South Carolina.

As for her feminist influences, Cohen looks to activists. She also finds inspiration in the “amazing network of feminists online.”

“Hearing from trans women and women of color and women with disabilities and women who live their lives at all these different intersections of oppression — that has hugely influenced and expanded the way I think about feminism,” she said.

Aside from this supportive community, Cohen said she’s gotten her share of hate for her work. “Just read my Twitter mentions,” she said. But no comment, tweet or message will stand in her way.

“If someone wants to look me in the eye and tell me that all people have the same rights and opportunities and nobody in this country is facing discrimination, they’re welcome to try.”

See below for more of Cohen’s illustrations and support her work through Patreon.

Dear Future Husband (Assuming You Exist): 16 Things You Need To Know

Originally published on Unwritten by Mallory Arnold.

If you know me like I imagine you one day will, you know that I’ll start this letter off awkwardly.

Um, hey.

A future husband is like some mythical creature… like the Lochness Monster or Bigfoot.

I know, I just compared you to Bigfoot — but I swear it gets better. Keep reading.

Point being, when we were little, creatures like unicorns and elves sounded amazing and we couldn’t wait to find one someday. Sadly, as we grew older, it seemed like it was less and less likely that we’d see anything of the sort. The closest that we’d get was the leprechaun on a Lucky Charms box, and don’t even get me started on the disappointment Santa Claus caused. Likewise, a husband – a future soul mate – seems too fantastical nowadays to be real. We once dreamed about a prince charming, and nowadays we’re accepting we might just have to crawl out of that tower and find him ourselves.

But I know you’re out there. Maybe you’re going through the same things I am. Are you working at some summer job you hate but secretly like? Do you feel that pit of anxious excitement about a future career? Or maybe not. Maybe you’re actually a professional bullfighter/puppy rescuer and we’re not doing anything similar right now – who knows.

Here are just a few things I’d like to tell you while you’re somewhere out there.

Be safe while driving. I’m assuming you’re jamming out to something on the radio — whether it be country, rock, classic, or rap (please don’t be screamo), don’t get wrapped up in scrolling through songs. If your good buddy Jim from the office (rodeo?) texts you, let him wait until you’re parked. It would be a shame if something happened to you before we could even meet. Be safe.

Collect extra T-shirts and hoodies. Just warning you ahead of time, because I’m a T-shirt bandit. Might as well be prepared.

We’re getting a dog. If you’re not a dog person, I’d suggest starting to become one, because dogs are life. If you already love canines, be ready to brainstorm names. Because our dog’s about to be awesome.

Don’t give up — ever. These are the days where life starts to get serious and sometimes when you fall, no one is there to pick you back up. I wish I could reach a hand out, but since I can’t, I want you to keep going. Never stop doing something you’re passionate about.

I can make a pretty mean bowl of spaghetti. Just thought you should know.

If you’re thinking about getting a tattoo… You get drunk when you’re out with your buddies, and now you’re romping around town with that swagger you have. Suddenly a batman tattoo stamped across your face seems like a pretty good idea, right? Please, think twice. I beg of you.

I’ve been hurt. I’m sorry to say, but you may be receiving me bruised and a little bent. While you were not present in my life, boys have wandered here and there. Some good, some bad. The bad ones I will gladly hand over their names so you may threaten to kick their butts.

I’m bad at taking compliments. More than likely, when you compliment me, I’ll respond with a frown or a gentle punch in the arm. Please don’t be discouraged, I’ll get better at it, I promise. Just don’t be surprised if I fall out of my chair or something.

I don’t like beer. So that beer in the fridge? Don’t worry about it disappearing. All yours.

I’m rooting for you. When it seems like everyone’s turned their backs against you, just know somewhere I’m out there cheering you on.

I’m horrible at making decisions. Ask me where I want to go for dinner? I won’t know. Ask me what movie I want to see? I can’t decide. I panic. A lot.

Spend good time with your family. They’re always gonna be your best friends no matter what, and I like them already.

Accept my arm wrestling challenges. I may lose every time, but never deny me the chance to try. And don’t let me win. I got this.

Prepare to own every Disney movie ever made. Preferably on VCR, if possible.

No, please don’t ask to see old pictures of me in braces. I know you love me now and all that jazz…but you don’t wanna know.

I can’t be more excited to fall in love with you.

To all the girls out there wondering if there is ever going to be someone for them — we can’t give up. It’s easy to say “Forever alone” and put yourself down all the time. But if you put yourself out there and do something you’re passionate about, you’ll find him. If you give up now, you’re letting him down. If you give up and wait in your tower, you’ll never get the list he’s writing you.

So right now, future husband, I guess you’re a mystery like Bigfoot or those darned unicorns we just can’t seem to track down.

But I know one day when we finally meet, you’ll be my best friend. And I can’t wait.

“I Need A Miracle: Two Generations of Deadheads Find Peace”

It’s 20 years since I’ve been to a Dead show. But on the eve of the Dead’s reunion tour, it’s time to come out.

This summer, Dead members Phil, Bob, Bill, Mickey and Bruce, practiced and prepared with Jeff and Trent (a (tie) dyed in the wool younger Jerry) to go on the road. I’ve been pumped up, and not just a little excited. Last week, two dreams sent me a message of joy and healing.

I’m running toward a house that’s being remodeled – the window frames painted purple! – In preparation for the show. I am skipping along like my eighteen-year-old self – energetic and buoyed with anticipation!

The reunion is big news. Millions of dollars will be earned. Snarky commentators claim that the two-city tour (Chicago and Santa Clara) is the Dead’s ‘pension plan’ but I’m going out on a limb here. We need a miracle. The timing couldn’t be better.

I was fifteen at my first Dead show. 1969. Fillmore East, late show. I was asleep one-half hour into the Dark Star space jam.

Fast forward. Fillmore East 1971. Was it my connection with “Workingman’s Dead” or my willingness to imbibe that which I had flirted with but feared? Nonetheless, I fell madly, passionately in love with the Dead. Yes, I was ‘under the influence’ of Osley’s special “sure to bring enlightenment” tabs. And yes Pigpen and the band made sexy, delicious love to my mind with “Turn on Your Love Light.”

After the show, I was sure that I had been “reborn.” A cliché, but the truth is, I don’t think I would have ever been a poet or a writer without that experience. That show blasted open my mind and my expectations. It blasted apart rules and about what I – what our entire generation – could say and do. (Don’t forget that Steve Jobs was an acid taking Deadhead himself. Remember ‘Think Different?”)

It’s not a stretch to say that the band also helped to heal an injured part of my soul by providing a connection to something large and deep. Those early years were difficult ones for me. I’d lost my father at eleven and my mother was emotionally absent. Dead shows were my happy place. My miracle.

In 1972, I told my mother I was ‘going to California for six months.

Those six months turned into the rest of my life.

I had a new group of Berkeley Deadhead friends now. Jake and Michael Star, Sonya and Arthur and Jeff and Gary Cherry and the Angels of Light performance troupe. We went to shows, we dropped acid, we sold handmade jewelry on Telegraph Avenue. I wrote poems. We went to Dead shows. Stanford, Kezar stadium, the Fillmore West.

Much as I would have liked to stay in that particular bubble, I was a budding poet. Strengthened by the feminist community’s support to ‘come out as an artist,’ the powers that be were rallying behind me – publishing my work and organizing readings. My poem, “Strong and Free” was recorded by the most popular feminist rock n’ roll band of the early 70’s and aired nationally. But the feminist community had no interest in trucking with the Grateful Dead.

I was out of the Dead scene for nine years.

****

I met Debbie at a women’s business networking conference in 1983. Her accounting skills were just what I needed for my new energy conservation company. And Debbie was a Deadhead. A lesbian Deadhead!

We went to some of the great shows: The Greek Theater, Stanford, Henry J. Kaiser, Bill Graham Auditorium, Laguna Seca (one of the seminal shows labeled as ‘Monterey’ in the Rolling Stone commemorative book) and Southern California too.

“They learned how to play!” I told Debbie. And it was true. The 80’s were the Dead’s apex. I longed to write a poem to honor the moment, but I only had one line: “When Jerry solos, it’s like the stars are crying.”

***

In 1988, I had a daughter. Yes, Debbie and I were starting an ‘alternative family.’ And things changed again. Although I went to shows with Debbie when I was pregnant, after Simone was born, I preferred to stay home.

In another twist, Deb met Melissa who had backstage connections to the Dead. Through grace or necessity (I didn’t possess the emotional or physical resources to single parent) Deb and I worked out a manageable co-parenting agreement.

The second dream involves my next relationship. Fay was also a Deadhead. But it was the 90’s. I was preoccupied with parenting and working. We made it to just a few shows. I didn’t know that Jerry was using heroin; the music was still awe-inspiring. I grieved in 1995 when Jerry passed. I grieved for him, for the band, for my happy place. I needed a miracle.

After an acrimonious split, Fay and I went our separate ways. My next love – my current husband and life partner – was Adam – a techhie Deadhead. Again? Yup. Cranking up the Dead has been a tremendous source of joy for us. We dance around the house, we go on road trips and we party – with Debbie!

The second dream:

I’m in a concert hall – a small one like the Fillmore East. Everyone is electrified, excited, waiting for the Dead to play. People are streaming in, old friends! I’m hugging all of them. Fay, Louis, all my old Deadhead pals that I haven’t seen for years.
Joy. Happiness. A miracle.

This Sunday, Debbie and me, Adam and Simone, Debbie’s daughter Gavi and Simone’s boyfriend Nick are all going to hear the Dead at Levi’s stadium.

Here’s my question: If the Grateful Dead’s music can heal the wounds of my family, maybe music can heal the earth. Maybe we need to be dancing and singing more. We need a miracle. Fast.

Escaping the Need for External Validation

2015-06-23-1435055744-6492807-Sparkler.jpeg

As a coach I spend much of my time contemplating what living ‘a joyous life’ is all about.

I often ponder whether a joyous life has anything to do with external experiences and achievement. Recently I find myself mainly concluding that nothing can give you true joy apart from dedicated internal empathy and self-compassion. My issue however is that I struggle to fully live this notion. Throughout life I’ve found myself in a ‘chase,’ moving forward to get the next external ‘win.’ When I reflect back I can see moments of financial security, good grades, success at interviews, but the good feeling is always short lived, a momentary peak. I can see how throughout life I’ve lived the same pattern, I’ve experienced a high due to external validation, and then I’ve gone back to a place of scarcity, back in battle to get the next acknowledgement.

I’m at a point now after several years of self-development that I have that awareness, I can see the pattern I’ve engaged in. Chasing validation, gaining it, quickly losing it and getting back into the race is something I’ve done repeatedly up until this point. So the next piece is choosing to change, choosing to change for the sake of living a joyous life.

For me the change starts with imagining I have two minds: a conscious ‘extroverted’ mind, and a subconscious ‘introverted’ mind.

My extroverted mind is very analytical, very heady, a strategist, a practical force. My introverted mind is the part of me that feels, that connects to the beauty of the world, what’s possible, what I love, my compassion and empathy. My introverted mind is an ocean of possibility. My extroverted mind, although very useful in a crisis, and the part of me that ensures I get up, get out and make plans, is the part of me that focuses on that external validation and can actually constrict who I am.

My extroverted mind focuses on three main areas:

Money concerns
How ‘successful’ my business is
What I look like

My extroverted mind is louder than my introverted mind, and obliterates it most of the time. I find myself making decisions and navigating my days from the perspective of worry about money, success and appearance. Basically my extroverted mind puts me in a place of fear.

My introverted mind knows there is a plethora of potential for me, a million ways to feel fulfilled and happy and free and peaceful. I connect to my introverted mind through meditation, mindfulness, coaching, when listening to certain music or seeing certain images or films. I know when I’m connecting to my introverted mind because anything seems possible, the walls come down, I can do anything and I don’t feel overwhelmed by that fact. I feel full of breath, clean, alive.

So I have a vast expansive introverted, sub conscious mind that can lead me to wall-to-wall peace and joy in my life. And I have a sort of ‘gate-keeping’ conscious extroverted mind that has a louder voice and a lot more persuasive experience.

And so here I go, trying hard to change the balance of power in my own mind, for the sake of living a joyous life.

A technique I recently learnt is a simple meditation process. I imagine breathing in clear, clean air and breathing out dark smoke. Clean clear air on the in breath, and dark smoky air on the exhale. This simple process takes me away from those three concerns of my extroverted mind. This simple process helps me to be still, to focus, to be present to what’s here. The simple act of stopping and taking in everything that’s here right now offers up an immense sense of freedom. The ‘chase’ to be thinner, richer, more successful in business, becomes almost laughable. When I connect to the pure potential of my introverted mind those concerns shrink in importance, and I feel like I’m an escapee bird, flying away into infinity. That, is the life I want to experience, that, is the way I want to navigate through this world.

I hope now I emotionally, spiritually and physically start moving towards a life lived from my introverted mind. I want to live life in a place of pure potential, rather than existing in a heady space of fear. I want to be a free bird. I want to live a joyous life.

35 Items In Your Wardrobe is All You Need: 7 Steps

My interpretation of a “minimalist wardrobe” was recently challenged when my girlfriend Jenn Mapp told me about her 35 items. I have known her for years (pre toddler and infant, pre house), and have always thought of her as a “fashionista” in the best sense of the word. I rarely saw her wear the same outfit twice, she always looked fabulous, and she accessorizes better than anyone else. Yet, she decided to simplify her closet (thus her life), and pare it down to 35 items. And she loves the result – not just in her closet. Intrigued? Read on… After all, we all know of Steve Jobs’ jeans and black turtleneck uniform. President Obama has discussed owning shirts of just a few colors, to simplify his mornings. And most business men in effect have their own uniform (suit and shirt). Perhaps they are on to something… I may just have to try this myself…

• AP: What made you decide to reduce your wardrobe to 35 items?

• JM: For most of life shopping was my favorite pastime. Now I have a toddler and an infant, a full time job and own a small (but charming!) house. This translates to no time, minimal storage and considerably less discretionary income. Earlier this spring, while searching Pinterest for closet organization tips, I discovered several boards dedicated to the idea of a minimalist wardrobe. The notion of turning my massive, unmanageable closet into a curated collection of seasonal apparel just felt right. Within a few days I ruthlessly edited my clothes down to 35 items and consigned, donated or stored the rest. My life has improved immeasurably.

• AP: What are your 35 items? Does this include accessories, shoes, lingerie – everything?

• JM: I define “35 items” as the apparel hanging in my closet — business casual separates worn mostly to work. My 35 items do not include accessories because these are my signature outfit makers and without them this would not be a plausible fashion experiment – for me. Workout clothes, lingerie and sleep items do not count. However, my entire fashion collection now fits in one side of an Ikea Pax wardrobe. This makes me very proud.

• AP: How has your life changed since undergoing this fashion experiment?

• JM: In so many ways! Obviously I’ve saved money and time but I’m also happier and more present. You don’t realize how much energy it takes to manage possessions. Most tangibly, my fashion experiment motivated me to start a blog. I assumed #jennmapp would be a fashion blog cataloging multiple outfits created from 35 items but I’ve found that I am more inspired by the psychology of the process. Curbing the impulse to shop parallels instinctive behavior in every aspect of my life. My 3 year old son AJ has emerged as a noteworthy muse.

• AP: Any tips on how others could reduce their wardrobes?

• JM: Sure, how about a random numbered list? The internet loves a list.

1. Purchase or borrow an inexpensive rolling rack.

2. Assemble your entire wardrobe in one place.

3. Automatically move formal or cocktail attire, out of season clothes, ill-fitting or damaged items to the rolling rack.

4. Consider every item that remains. These will make up your current season collection. If you love it, you will know in one second – leave it in your closet. If you experience any hesitation towards an item, put it on the rolling rack.

5. Ruthlessly edit until you are down to a collection that feels right. You will need an adequate assortment of tops, bottoms and outwear. Consider your lifestyle. Depending on the size of your wardrobe, you may require several rounds of edits.

6. Store, repair, consign or donate the rest. Just do it.

7. Repeat every three – four months, filling in gaps as needed.

As I listen to Jenn in awe, she concludes: “You only think you need hundreds of items. You don’t! I guarantee you only wear 30 – 50 pieces as it is. Closet reduction is an excellent exercise in defining your value system. If you read this and are inspired to act, you are ready. Take the plunge. If the idea doesn’t resonate at all or seems inconceivable, well someone has to keep the economy afloat, right?”

Right!

The Kurt Cobain Movie You Need to See: “Soaked In Bleach”

2015-06-11-1434036446-2519249-SIB_Poster.jpg

I grew up in Seattle. I experienced the same rainy, dreary weather, sometimes for 20 to 30 days straight, that is often cited as the reason why our music became grunge music in the soggy, moss-covered environs of the Pacific Northwest. We were stuck inside. Grey. Dark. Gloomy. Depressing. People said, “But of course you would come up with grunge music!” This, as the narrative goes, then led to the grungification of the rest of the planet.

Really?

All because of this participatory precipitation?

Talk about a load of Ballard BS! A Muckleshoot of Misperception I say! (sorry, local references)

Sure, you couldn’t always go outside, but how many bands in warm weather regions actually practiced outside? I’ve traveled the world and I can tell you there are many misperceptions about the great northwest — the people, the climate and the music. Some are easy to refute, such as, “Good God, it always rains in Seattle!” Well, it rains more annually in New York City and Atlanta than Seattle, so take that!

Others are not so easy to refute.

Especially one.

And it’s a big one.

Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain committed suicide.

Many have tried for years to refute, to disprove the Seattle Police Department’s official cause of death. Many believe Cobain did not commit suicide and was, in fact, murdered. There are nearly as many theories as to what happened to Cobain as there are rainy days in the Emerald City.

So numerous are these theories that they often become a downpour of information, where individual droplets, of both fact and fiction, rain down into one big, murky puddle of what I call faction (clearly not your traditional faction definition). Fact and fiction have become indistinguishable from each other.

Some of these factions have come in the form of movies, both documentary and scripted. I’ve seen nearly all of them. Some of are the definition of faction and others, while earnest, miss the mark.

Until now.

That’s because I just finished watching Benjamin Statler’s documentary, Soaked In Bleach, for the second time in as many days. Yes, twice.

I don’t want to sit here in my New York City hotel room and tell you all the reasons why Soaked In Bleach works so well, because I’d rather you watch it and experience it for yourself. I’m not a fan of reviews that exhaustively tell you everything about a movie. (Look, I didn’t even want to know the sex of my children before they were born. There are too few real surprises in life anymore.)

But I will say a few things why I believe this documentary works where most have failed.

First, Statler does something very well that I usually do not like at all in a documentary: re-enactments. They often take me right out of the narrative, they are poorly acted and just seem like bad movie-making 101.

In fact, the director starts off the movie with a re-enactment. I have to be honest, I thought to myself, “For the love of God, really?”

However, Statler handles it brilliantly.

The director intersperses re-enactments with the real audio recordings from back-in-the-day and marries it to the scene we are watching on the screen. So, you will hear the real audio from those tape recordings, noted by a small text on the screen of who is speaking and then that character will come into view on screen and he/she will be saying those same words, but it’s not the actors voice at first. He’s dubbed the real recording over the actor’s voice and then blends out the old recording to bring in the actors voice. It’s a great way to add authenticity to the scene as a tangible, factual reference and not take us out of the documentary feel. The film feels like a documentary, but with feature-film qualities. I actually found myself looking forward to those re-enactment scenes.

“We knew we had the straight documentary,” Statler told me recently, “And we had the context of the story in real time from Tom Grant’s recordings.”

Tom Grant is the private investigator hired by Cobain’s wife, Courtney Love. Love hired Grant to find her husband because she assumed he was missing. Cobain had been in rehab and had left the facility without contacting her. Grant has hours and hours of audio recordings of in-person conversations as well as phone conversations with nearly everyone involved with Kurt and Courtney during the time period leading up to and after the death of Kurt. It provides for a fascinating narrative.

Grant is a lightening rod, not only in the film, but in real life to this very day in his relentless pursuit to get fundamental questions answered regarding Kurt’s death. Grant’s taken a public beating for this for years, but continues to soldier on.

And what may finally vindicate Grant just a bit is what Statler has been able to do in this film – get some of the actual players surrounding the death of Kurt to speak on camera, some for the first time ever.

From paramedic John Fisk, the first responder on the scene with the Seattle Fire Department describing what he witnessed to Norm Stamper, Seattle Chief of Police on the day Kurt was killed stating there were, indeed, investigative mistakes, these first person accounts add chilling, factual insight.

“We should have, in fact, taken steps to study patterns involved in the behavior of key individuals who had a motive to see Kurt Cobain dead,” says Stamper in the film.

“It’s about right and wrong, it’s about honor, it’s about ethics,” Stamper continues, “And if we didn’t have it right the first time we better damn well get it right the second time.”

The second time they are talking about is re-opening the investigation. In fact, director Statler has enlisted some of the top forensic scientists and homicide experts to study the facts of the case and they all, unequivocally, call for the case to be re-opened.

“Having world-renowned experts back up Tom Grant’s investigation,” said Statler, “and calling for a re-opening of the case based on the fact of the Seattle Police Department’s flawed investigation is key to this film’s authenticity.”

I asked Statler why this documentary? Why now? What is his motivation?

“I’m not motivated by punishment,” Statler said. “It is unbearable to me that there is this acceptance of Cobain’s suicide despite this mountain of evidence out there that doesn’t add up”

Statler and every expert point to one small item, on just one line, on the police report from the day Kurt’s body was found. That item turned out to be, in their words, the biggest mistake of the case.

It is shocking.

What is it? You’ll just have to watch Soaked In Bleach. Maybe even twice.

Why You Need to Think Hard before Agreeing to Co-Host a Shower

Have you ever had to co-host a bridal shower or baby shower and wanted to kill the person you were planning with before the day of the shower even arrives? I have a friend who is about ready to kill her recent co-hostess, and after hearing the stories, I’m willing to help her bury the body and hide the evidence.

We’ll call my girlfriend “Michele” so I don’t tip off her potential victim. This story is about planning a baby shower, but all of this applies to giving a bridal shower too. Keep that in mind when you’re volunteering. And when you accept somebody’s offer of help.

Michele offered to give a shower for her childhood girlfriend who is having her first baby. Because Michele lives hours away from the guest of honor, they’re going to have the party at the home of the mommy-to-be. But she doesn’t have to do anything. Michele plans to arrive a couple of days ahead and clean the entire house before and after the event so the preggers guest of honor doesn’t have to deal with it or overstress herself.

When Michele asked her friend for the guest list to send the adorable giraffe invitations she’d ordered (it’s a boy!), her friend INFORMED her that another friend was going to co-host the event and she was handling the invitations.

Because the baby shower was going to be at the guest of honor’s house, Michele didn’t feel like she could argue about it, and the guest of honor presented it as a fait accompli. It was a done deal and, apparently, the other friend would be really hurt if her offer to “help” wasn’t accepted.

Michele was seriously put out, but trying to be a good sport and supportive friend, she went along with it and contacted her future partner-in-crime. They chatted about the plans and Michele told her everything she’d already planned, ordered, and purchased, and the other woman was on board with everything. She offered to take care of sending the invitations (which Michele had already had made) and bring the cake. Safe enough, Michele thought. She was wrong.

After spending hours creating adorable wedding favors, hunting used bookstores for specific selections for a baby-shower game, shopping ahead at Costco for the beverage supplies, and buying pretty much everything necessary to make an elegant but fun jungle-themed bridal shower, Michele was pumped. She even stopped worrying about the cake.

Until she called her co-hostess a couple of weeks prior to the shower to check in and was informed that she had changed theme of the cake to The Minions. No seriously. And just to class it up even more, she was doing an ice cream cake – a total mess when you’re trying to have an elegant tea party. She also proudly announced that she’d purchased a whole bunch of Minion décor to contribute to the jungle. It was clear she was clueless about the concept of having a décor theme actually make sense.

Look, a Minions theme is perfectly fine if that’s what you’ve planned – it’s fun and the décor and favors should match the concept. I’ve seen adorable cupcakes made using Twinkies – but they’re a theme in their own right. Adding The Minions to sweet décor of giraffes and elephants will just look weird. It’s like having a SpongeBob SquarePants theme and deciding to decorate the room with Princess Bride. It simply doesn’t work together. Anybody can see that, right? Apparently, this woman couldn’t.

How did Michele handle the change of plans foisted on her? Better than I would have. She simply told the girl she already had the décor covered (as if Minion garlands hadn’t been mentioned) and everything else was already taken care of. And then she hung up the phone and came up with a plan for appropriately-themed cupcakes to put on the party table as well.

She did ask her co-hostess to help with the cleaning and prep, figuring if she had time to hunt down Minions napkins she could help clean a bathroom. But she was wrong. The other woman pled “too busy” and Michele did all the prep work

She managed to hide as much of The Minions décor as she possibly could – the garlands did not get put up and were mysteriously missing a the last minute – and she created an appetizing cupcake display that drew the eye away from the mushy melting mess that had to be served in the kitchen rather than in the dining room, where pictures were being taken. The baby shower was a success and Michele graciously shared the kudos with her co-hostess. But she was on a rant when I talked to her about it afterwards. She did not have fun executing this event, although she was happy the new mommy was happy.

There’s nothing wrong with two friends co-hosting a bridal shower or baby shower together. In fact, it’s a great way to have fun planning and share the expense. But trying to plan with a complete stranger who was foisted on you by a well-meaning guest of honor is a complete and total nightmare.

One solution is to offer to throw your own shower if you have a place to do it. Most brides have more than one bridal shower, although the same guests should not being invited to both of them (excluding the moms and the bridal party, of course).

Showers really aren’t meant to be huge events – if you have 50 people you must invite, then you really need two or three different showers. There’s plenty of fun to be had by all and no reason you need more than 10 to 15 guests at any one shower. It’s flat-out hard to play party games with a huge group, and it takes FOREVER to open the gifts at a large shower. I’d rather attend a small bridal or baby shower and actually get to visit with the guest of honor than make small talk with a large group of strangers and sit through two hours of gift opening.

It’s almost always okay to decline someone’s offer to co-host a special event. Michele wishes she had pushed back when she was informed she had a partner. If you agree to plan something with someone you do not know, make sure you agree on the ground rules, theme, and how you’re going to split the expenses BEFORE you actually start planning together. It doesn’t have to be a nightmare.

Until next time, happy wedding planning from Weddings in Vieques and Sandy Malone Weddings & Events!

11 Things You Need to Know About the Late Great Couturiere Madame Carven

WWD reports that Marie-Louise Carven-Grog (born Carmen de Tommaso, and later known as Madame Carven) died today in France at the age of 105. In the post-war era when Christian Dior, Pierre Balmain, and Cristobal Balenciaga were making headlines in fashion, Carven was one of the very few female designers of her time—and an innovator, as well, patenting the push up bra in 1950.

carven-fititng-model-1950

Madame Carven fitting a model in 1950.

Here are 11 of her most fascinating fashion achievements.

1. A couturiere for petite women: The designer launched her namesake house in 1945 with the aim of dressing petite women like her (she was 5’1″).

2. Au revoir corset: Carven wanted women to feel comfortable in her clothes and so she loosened haute couture‘s waist-whittling reins and offered billowing silhouettes that allowed women to move easily in her designs.

3. You can thank her for: Pink gingham!

4. She was into fast(er) fashion: In Carven’s day, Paris was all about haute couture—an exclusive, expensive made-to-measure business. Alongside fellow couturiers Jacques Fath, Robert Piguet, Jean Desses, and Jeanne Paquin, she pioneered prêt-a-portèr, or ready-to-wear. Customers were finally able to get high fashion, way, way, faster.

5. She took fashion shows on the road: Today, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Dior often take their collections out for a spin and show in different cities (think Seoul, Palm Springs, and Cannes). Carven, however, was the first to do so, presenting her collections in Egypt, Thailand, Morocco, Cuba, Brazil, Singapore and Mexico.

6. The OG It-girl brand: Iconic French singer Edith Piaf was a Carven fan, as was Brigitte Bardot, who wore Carven at her 1959 wedding.

7. She invented one of the first push-up bras: Carven worked with a lingerie maker to patent the Sylvène, a push-up bra.

8. She loved Hollywood: In 1954, Carven worked with legendary costume designer Edith Head to create costumes for Grace Kelly in Hitchcock’s Rear Window.

9. A national treasure of France: In 1978, she was named a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and in 2009, she was made a Commander of the Legion of Honor, France’s highest distinction for civilians.

10. She designed for half a century: Madame Carven retired at age 84—48 years after she founded her fashion house.

11. She celebrated a century in style: French style icons Loulou de la Falaise and Claude Montana were among the luminaries who celebrated the designer’s 100th birthday in November 2009. Carven blew out the candles on a pistachio Laduree macaron cake while wearing a matching pistachio-green Carven suit.

Today, Carven is designed by artistic directors Alexis Martial and Adrien Caillaudaud. The collection still has the joy and exuberance the house’s founder. Carven’s former artistic director, Guillaume Henry has often said that Madame Carven was a constant presence—and that they had regular conversations, well into her 100th year. Madame Carven will surely be remembered, as will her impact on all of our wardrobes.

Sometimes You Don’t Need a Planner

This blog probably seems odd to be written by a planner, but hear me out. Not everyone should hire a planner. That’s not to say that everyone doesn’t need a planner, but for those people that cannot get out of their own way, a planner might not be for you.

I admit to being an OCD control freak. It’s pretty much my way or no way at all. This is why I didn’t hire a planner. Short of cloning myself, there was no one that I was going to trust with the most important day of my life. And that’s OK. It’s OK to be psycho crazy about your wedding. If you’re normally all about the details and believe that if you want something done right, you better do it yourself, then a planner might not be for you.

Over the years I have run into these brides and grooms, the ones that think they know best and that no professional could possibly be the answer to their prayers. I end up working with these couples and wonder why they have hired me to plan their wedding day. They want what they want and, more importantly, are only willing to get what they want, their way.

There is no suggestion you can make, unless it coincides with their own, that they will deem acceptable. No matter how brilliant the idea is, the planner will be met with “Ok, what else you got?”

“What else I got?” Yes, this is a question I have received and it’s like, well, what else do you want?

That’s the whole joke too. These people want you to suggest everything, but nothing you suggest is ever going to be good enough. It’s like you’re supposed to be Madam Cleo and figure out what they want.

Planners are not mind readers. We can plan your day based on what you like and what you don’t like. But if you don’t help us out, then nothing we create is going to be what you want to see. Help us. Give us pictures. Share your thoughts and ideas. These things are helpful.

But back to the brides and grooms that just don’t want to hear anything we have to say. Why did you hire a planner? Seriously. Ask yourself that question. Because if you cannot come up with a legitimate answer, then you are wasting your money. I have worked with brides that would ask my opinion and if I said “black”, and they wanted to hear “white”, it was an issue. Then there always came the point where I said to my clients to do whatever they wanted to do. My opinion (I knew) meant nothing, and they really didn’t want me to do anything other than agree with them.

And here’s the thing, a good planner, is not going to agree with your bad ideas. Oh, you want to swoop in on a pterodactyl for your grand entrance and you want to know if I think your dress might get wrecked? But when I say “absolutely it will get wrecked, hello, pterodactyl!!!!” you get mad because that’s not what you wanted to hear.

You know why we don’t want you to make these tragic mistakes? Because we’ve seen everything. There are some of the most ridiculous warning labels out there like “don’t eat this” on silica gel. Well, duh, don’t eat it. Why do they have to say that? Because some idiot probably ate it. We are giving you warning labels because we have seen what can and will happen when stupid decisions are made. What happened when someone drank hot coffee that was marked “caution: hot”? She got burned, and then she sued.

Basically, we, as planners, don’t want you suing us or writing bad reviews because we let you do whatever you wanted. When we say that something is a bad idea, or make a suggestion, we aren’t trying to ruin your life and destroy your vision. We’re trying to make it so that your wedding is beautiful and you aren’t in tears because some prehistoric bird ate your gown.

Other things that aren’t helpful? “I went to a wedding and my friend only spent….”. STOP. Everyone lies about what they spend on a wedding. Some go higher, some lower, but without looking at the contracts, I don’t care if you’re besties with them and pinky swore to tell each other the cost of the weddings you’re planning. She is lying to you and you are lying to her. Liars. Both of you. Pants ablaze.

What you do not do, is you do not go back to your planner with this information. When a planner hears that so and so said it can be done for much less, you are basically telling the planner that they know nothing and need to look into this. I’ve done this for clients before and 100% of the time they’ve been wrong on the numbers. Basically, the result was that I wasted a bunch of time to say “I told you so”. It’s not worth it.

The moral of the story is that if you want to plan your own wedding, then plan your own wedding. No one is judging you, and you’re the only person that can figure out if you need a planner and will be able to work with one. Not everyone can work with a planner, and that’s OK too.

Just use the pterodactyl for your trash the dress session instead of your entrance. Ok?

6 Compelling Reasons You Need Fancy Pajamas in Your Life, Immediately

The silk pajama set Grace Coddington wore to the Met Gala this year got almost as much press as Beyonce’s sheer Givenchy dress or Rihanna’s elaborate Guo Pei yellow robe. And for good reason. The Vogue creative director’s unexpected fashion maneuver that night was a bold statement about nonconformism, the parameters of formal dress code, personal agency, luxury, and fashion as artistic expression. She also proved to the world that everyone needs a pair of fancy pajamas in their life—stat.

grace-coddington-pajamas

Though Coddington’s set is meant for evening hours, there’s no reason the tailored look shouldn’t see light of day from time to time. Here are six compelling reasons you need fancy jammies in your life, immediately.

pajamas-weworewhat-2

We Wore What blogger Danielle Bernstein rocks the trend with denim cutoffs

1. Look chic without even trying. As evidenced above, a silk pajama top and jean shorts is the perfect summer weekend look—and roll-out-bed-throw-on-pants easy.

2. Pajamas are iconic—in a serious fashion-cred way. Who doesn’t want to feel three parts Audrey Hepburn (think Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Charade, and Roman Holiday) and equal parts Coco Chanel (the style was a favorite of Chanel’s—and she even produced couture pajamas for her best clients).

3. Wake up in the morning and you’re already halfway there. You will never again struggle getting dressed in the morning. Not sure what to wear when you emerge from your featherbed in fancy pajamas? You’re already (at least half) dressed!

4. Versatility, thy name is pajama. If you are, indeed, going to sport the look outside your home, the styling options are endless. Pair the top with everything from a pencil skirt to denim shorts, or throw on a classic cashmere sweater or tuck in a T-shirt with the luxe bottoms.

5. Men have been doing it for ages. This is a classic borrowed-from-the-boys moment: Guys learned the ways of the fancy pajama set long before we did (see: Hugh Hefner, noted pajama lover), and it’s time to try it out for yourself.

6. They’re the perfect summer house look. Lest we forget the summer plans we’ve made that involve tons of communal PJ time! Trade in your boxers and T-shirt mix for something a little more share-house-friendly.

Are you ready to up your pajama game? Get a jump-start with our favorite fancy sets below!

What ‘Type’ of Planner Will You Need?

There are many types of planners to choose from when you decide you want to hire one for your Big Day. No, I’m not talking about “Day of” Coordinator or Full Planner, but rather the kind of planner you and your fiancé will match with best.

Below is a list of the types of planners that are out there, and it’s up to you to decide which one is a match for you! Kind of like picking out a pair or shoes, or your favorite vodka. Whatever.

The Overenthusiastic Newbie

Ok, I know this isn’t about experience versus no experience, but the newbie has their own category. This planner knows nothing and no one — but really wants to plan your wedding at a cost of three gold stars and a reference letter. She will have no contacts to contact, and will have trouble negotiating contracts on your behalf. However, she is ready to go and will probably answer your emails within 30 seconds of you sending them. You can save money here, but if you’re high maintenance and want your ducks in a row, you might want to steer clear of this one. Otherwise your ducks will be dead and in orange sauce. That went sour.

The Queen Bee

This planner knows everyone, but not everyone wants to know her. She’s there for you and only you, and doesn’t care if she upsets venues or vendors. You are her client and she will die for you. Ridiculous requests? No problem, she will handle them. If she can’t handle them, she will never tell you that your requests are difficult, but rather that everyone else is incompetent. She’s on your side 100 percent, even when you’re wrong, and you’ll find her in the kitchen at the venue when your salmon comes out over-cooked. If you want someone like this, great. Be warned though: While she’s on your side always, she’s probably not making many friends in the industry. That translates to no favors for you when your requests become even more difficult.

The Olivia Pope

First and foremost, if you don’t know who that is, walk away from this blog, go watch all four seasons of Scandal on Netflix, and then come back. I’ll wait. Anyway, this type of planner that emulates Ms. Pope has it all handled. She’s not afraid of a fight and wants to get your day done perfectly for you. Sure, she might be intimidating, but you know that she’ll get the job done, even if she has to lose her temper. Of course, this also means telling you when you’re out of line, and scolding you when you miss appointments, make ridiculous demands or don’t get back to her when you need to. The plus side is that you’ll never know when there’s an issue with your planning, because she will handle everything. As long as you can handle her being as direct with you as she is with those working on your wedding, you’ll be fine.

The Pleaser

A planner can’t do everything because not everything is possible. While a good planner won’t tell you that things are impossible, they will make it clear when things are difficult. The pleaser only knows how to say “yes” and “can do” and refuses to learn the words “no” and “not happening.” While this is reassuring, sometimes this planner will make promises that she can’t keep, and while there usually is a way out of a jam, when there isn’t, she (and you both) are screwed.

The Designer

Depending on what you want, a designer planner might be exactly what you need. This planner is all about your color, theme, and total decor. Logistics aren’t really where her head is at. She can tell you every flower that is in season, what draping to hang from the walls, and has more Pinterest boards than you can imagine. If you are clueless when it comes to what linens pair with what what china, this is the planner that would be perfect for you. But, if you need help with your budget and negotiating contracts, or putting together a timeline, then the artist might not be in your best interest.

The Old Timer

These are planners that have been around forever. They know the owners of every venue hall, and the new owners as well. If you ask them “have you ever worked with” and the answer isn’t a quick “yes,” that means that vendor or venue hasn’t been around for that long. It’s great to have this planner in your back pocket because they are going to have a rolodex worth paying for. Of course, people don’t really change and as much as they may evolve over time, this planner might be a little old fashioned. Sometimes they won’t be all about the email as you will be, and will prefer to talk on the phone. Texting them? Probably not going to happen. And before anyone sends me nasty notes that established planners know how to use email, trust me, I know… but I do know plenty that don’t, and it’s enough to mention.

The Can’t Wed, Can Plan

You’ve all seen the movie, The Wedding Planner — the story of a planner that isn’t married, but can plan a wedding to rival anything in the top magazines. She’s well put together, got a keen sense of style, a huge contact list and is a master negotiator. But she’s not married and really has no intention to be. This is not the same as the planner who wants to be married, this is a planner who chooses not to be. While she might be great at her job, if she’s never experienced a wedding firsthand, how can she possibly understand the stress you are under as you plan your Big Day? The passion might be there, and she might be a wizard, but she’s never *been there*. Seeing it, is different than doing it. Your wedding can be flawless with this planner, but if you need someone who can empathize with your stress, you should look for the one with the ring on her finger.

Those are the top seven types of planners out there. Sometimes there is a crossover of personalities, and sometimes a planner is just one type. Matching you and your fiancé to the right type is essential to having a happy planning process. Trust me: You’ll be able to tell during the consultation just what category your planner falls into.

And in case you’re wondering — I’m the Olivia Pope type!

Harvard Class Day Speaker: We All Need To Come Out

Reina Gattuso, Harvard College’s Class Day Orator, implored graduates at the Ivy League school during a graduation ceremony Wednesday to “come out” about things they fear may hold them back.

“It is hard to be out about the things that have held us back when everyone around us is soaring,” said Gattuso, a member of Harvard’s Class of 2015.

Gattuso told students to come out about what may make them feel vulnerable, which could be that they feel like they aren’t the “correct” gender or race, or about their own self doubts.

“If we are going to use the power we feel every time we tell someone where we go to school to make the world a better place, we need to come out,” Gattuso declared.

Gattuso said during her Class Day speech that she came out as bisexual to her family on the same day President Barack Obama came out in support of same-sex marriage rights in 2012. After that, her father supported her and she began writing a biweekly column in the Harvard Crimson student newspaper about sexuality.

“What will you come out about?” she asked. It might be coming out to ask for help when they hit a roadblock on a project or about things that make you uncomfortable at work, she explained.

“I hope we have the courage to do it,” she told her classmates, because when they do, “We validate the dignity of everyone.”

“Come out with your entire weird, wonderful being,” Gattuso continued. “Come out for that nerdy kid whose life you are about change.”

Ethan Loewi, another 2015 Class Day speaker, added a similar sentiment in his remarks, telling his fellow graduates it’s a good thing if they “struggle with tough existential questions.”

“Don’t repress your doubt, confront it,” Loewi said.

Watch their speeches in the video above, which starts at 52:00.

What You Need To Know About The ‘Quiverfull’ Movement

“19 Kids And Counting” stars Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar found themselves in the spotlight for dark reasons this week after reports surfaced that their oldest son, Joshua, molested several young girls, including some of his sisters, during his teenage years. With 19 children, the Duggars are frequently associated with the “Quiverfull” movement — a contingent of conservative Christians who shun contraception — though Michelle and Jim Bob have said they do not formally consider themselves “Quiverfull” Christians.

Even if the family doesn’t openly embrace the ideology, their lifestyle mirrors many of its core principles. To remind you exactly what the movement is all about, here are a few key facts you should know:

The name comes from a passage in the Bible.

Psalm 127 states: “Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their opponents in court.” A quiver, in the old English sense of the word, is a case for holding arrows.

Many couples in the movement believe God won’t give them more children than they can handle.

Families that follow Quiverfull ideals refrain from using contraception, believing that it is only God who “opens and closes the womb,” as adherent Kelly Swanson told NPR. Another adherent told BBC in 2013 that her husband “saw it wasn’t such a scary thing to do after all, and that God wouldn’t overwhelm us with more than we could handle. One baby at a time arrived, and we were handling it, so we felt our marriage was being blessed by this choice and we continued.”

A woman’s ability to bear many children, like Michelle Duggar has, depends partly on overall health and partly on genes, Dr. Karen V. Wells from the Center for Women’s Health at Evergreen Hospital in Washington told NBC News. The outlet noted that after five or six children, women are more prone to post-partum bleeding or hemorrhaging, though one doctor told NBC that having many kids can help protect women from breast and ovarian cancer.

Some Quiverfull adherents believe they are building an army for God — or at least an army of conservative Christians.

Author Nancy Campbell, a well-known proponent of Quiverfull ideology who writes at the website Above Rubies, said in one post that the womb is a “weapon against Satan.”

“It is the womb that conceives and nourishes the ‘godly seed’ who will come forth to be the light in the darkness and who will destroy the works of Satan in this world. God is looking for an army. … The womb is a powerful weapon against Satan. Some women fear to bring babies into this evil world, but this is one of the greatest reasons for having children–to be the light in this dark world!” she wrote.

Kathryn Joyce, author of Quiverfull: Inside the Christian Patriarchy Movement, noted the political aspects of the belief system in a 2006 article on its history. One primary example is the 1990 book A Full Quiver: Family Planning and the Lordship of Christ by Rick and Jan Hess, who bemoaned the lack of conservatives in Washington.

Joyce described the Hess’ thinking: “But if just eight million American Christians began supplying more ‘arrows for the war’ by having six children or more, they propose that the Christian Right ranks could rise to 550 million within a century.”

The Duggar family may hold many of the same beliefs, but they do not self-identify with the Quiverfull movement.

In their book, A Love That Multiplies, Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar wrote: “Even though Wikipedia and some Internet blogs report that we are part of a QuiverFull movement, we are not. We are simply Bible-believing Christians who desire to follow God’s Word and apply it to our lives. God says children are a gift and a blessing, and we believe it.”

Vyckie Garrison, a former adherent to the Quiverfull lifestyle who went on to start the blog “No Longer Quivering,” points out that some may hesitate to label themselves as “Quiverfull” due to the politically charged nature of the term.

But the heart of the lifestyle, which the Duggars demonstrate, is what Garrison calls the practice of “biblical family values.”

The Quiverfull movement is anti-feminist and encourages a patriarchal system.

Doug Phillips, the former president of Vision Forum Ministries who is frequently described as a leader of the Quiverfull movement, has preached a message of “biblical patriarchy,” according to Religion News Service, stating that a man should “rule over his household” and “the God-ordained and proper sphere of dominion for a wife is the household.”

BBC notes that the Quiverfull movement originated in part as a backlash against the feminist movement and growing acceptance of birth control within American Christianity. Joyce adds that some Quiverfull adherents believe birth control to be the “hallmark of selfish feminists.”

Some of the most prominent advocates of the movement have been women.

Mary Pride’s 1985 book, The Way Home: Beyond Feminism, Back to Reality, helped set the stage for the Quiverfull movement. In the book, Pride called family planning “the mother of abortion.”

“A generation had to be indoctrinated in the ideal of planning children around personal convenience before abortion could be popular,” she wrote.

Campbell of Above Rubies says in one post on her site that “the womb is God’s beautiful gift to women. In fact, our whole reproductive cycle is designed especially for us by God.”

The movement has been linked to sexual assault before.

In the wake of the news that Joshua Duggar admitted to molesting underage girls, he released a statement on the family website, saying, “Twelve years ago, as a young teenager I acted inexcusably for which I am extremely sorry and deeply regret. I hurt others, including my family and close friends.”

Quiverfull leader Phillips found himself mired in controversy in 2013 when he admitted to “a lengthy, inappropriate relationship with a woman” who was not his wife. “While we did not ‘know’ each other in a Biblical sense,” Phillips wrote on the Vision Forum Ministries website, “it was nevertheless inappropriately romantic and affectionate.”

The following year, the woman came forward to sue Phillips and Vision Forum for mental distress caused by what she said was an abusive and manipulative relationship. Lourdes Torres-Manteufel alleged in a lawsuit that she met Phillips in 1999 when she was 15 years old and that he manipulated her into moving into his home in 2007. There, she charged, Phillips would repeatedly enter her room at night to touch her body, masturbate and ejaculate on her, despite her protests.

Agents of Change: 5 Forward Thinkers You Need To Know

2015-05-25-1432592092-7061577-famous.jpg

They walk among us–those agents of change. Sometimes, we just need to be reminded of who they are. Take note of five luminous entities that strive to make the world a better place.

The F*** It Duo
Here’s one to savor. They said F**k It to their jobs and moved to Italy years ago and in 2005, they created their first F**k It Retreat. Meet Mr. and Mrs. F**k It, John Parkin and Gaia Pollini (pictured above). Ten years have passed and since that time, the couple birthed the first F**k It Book (“F**k It: The Ultimate Spiritual Way”/ 2008/ Hay House). Additional F**k It literary siblings emerged. The books have been translated into 22 languages and have sold more than 400,000 copies. Workshops, retreats, one-on-one counseling, e-courses, and expanded F**k Its in London and Ireland have risen out of the fertile soil of the duo’s F**k It imaginations. And then, in 2011, The Hill That Breathes (in Urbano, Italy), the fabulous F**k It locale, won Best European Retreat (Natural Health). The secret to this couple’s undeniably unique success? F**k if I know. Well, I do. Somewhat. It’s two words–and not those, by the way. It’s these two: Let Go. Or, in this case, a more nuanced practice in the art of letting go by using a unique therapeutic tool: Profanity. Relax, it’s not all swear words and then nirvana happens–not really. Although the couple’s modality tends to lean toward being über fun if not laughter provoking. What was it a yogi once told me: “An anxious mind cannot exist in a relaxed body.” The point is this: transformation may occur when you relax first, and then turn toward that thing you are so fretting over, breathe and embrace it–by saying F*** It of course. There’s more to it, but you get the picture. Regardless, when you’re on a mission to locate agents of change near and far, like I am, it’s a treat to find these two doing so well, one F-Bomb at a time.

Lynne McTaggart and The Intention Experiment
McTaggart, a best-selling author, researcher and lecturer, is renowned for how well she creates a bridge between science and spirituality. Her books, “The Bond,” “The Field,” “What Doctors Don’t Tell You,” and “The Intention Experiment,” each, on some level, rise beyond pedestrian trinket-acquiring “spirituality” and suggest that there is a more powerful field of energy within us and around us; that we are far more powerful and connected to each other than we were led to believe. But it’s McTaggart’s Intention Experiment which continues to draw significant interest. It finds the author/lecturer overseeing unique intentions en masse on the web, which have been called one of the largest mind-over-matter trials ever undertaken. By inviting like-minded souls together who can hold a singular vision for, say, peace in a certain region, can peace then be experienced in that region? That’s the thrust behind the Intention Experiment–harnessing the intentions of thousands of participants on a specific topic. McTaggart first chronicled all this in her book of the same name, asking: “if we are connected, can our thoughts and intentions affect and change the world and things ‘out there?'” Her compelling evidence suggests that the answer is, indeed, yes. Imagine then, what could happen if the entire populace of, say, New York City held a glorious intention for a set amount of time? What effect could that have? A powerful one me thinks.

Polish Heritage Festival, Belmont, California
Poland has been making major headlines over the last nine months. Where to begin? There’s the country’s surprising economic boom and recent election–conservative challenger Andrzej Duda defeated the incumbent, Bronislaw Komorowski. And lest we forget the significant anniversary markers in 2014 and 2015–the former commemorated the 75th anniversary of the German and Russian invasion of Poland, as well as the Katyn massacre; the latter the mass deportation of Polish citizens by Stalin. A number of Polish organizations have been paying tribute to their heritage as well as their fallen comrades over the last year especially, and while each year ushers in a crop of Polish festivals throughout the Bay Area, this year, for the first time, the Polish community is being asked to come together for a larger event to be held in Belmont, California. This will mark the first ever collaborative event organized by several Polish groups. Co-sponsors include Polish Society of California/PNA Lodge 7, The Polish Club, San Francisco, Łowiczanie Polish Folk Ensemble of San Francisco and The Polonian Cultural and Pastoral Center (PCPC) in Sacramento. There is also an emphasis on the importance of the Polish-American Congress, which strives to meet the challenges facing Polish-Americans. Dancing, Polish cuisine, history and much more are expected to converge at the May 30 outing, but what stands out significantly here is the solidarity emanating from the groups that are bringing the event to fruition, especially at a time when Poland is wonderfully newsworthy. Village Yoga, Santa Cruz, California
As an author, travel writer and cultural moderator, I travel across the country for work on numerous occasions. I always make a point of dipping in to a yoga studio wherever I am. I have found some marvels in the likes of Bloomington, Indiana, and Kansas City, Missouri, and in an around California and then some. With thousands of yoga studios around the country, it’s challenging to pick just one that stands out. But I did find one that flies to the top of the list for any summer travelers out there, and anyone who might be interested in knowing what makes a business really thrive. So, what makes this Bikram Yoga portal in Santa Cruz, California--a mecca town for yoga studios by the way–rise above the others? What about the popular Funky Door in San Francisco? Or Chicago’s 105F, which offers a spirit-enhancing Gong Bath from time to time? Or any others for that matter? The answer rests in the title perhaps and, to me, it hearkens back to the old saying: “It takes a village.” Founded by Sally Adams and Amy Mihal in early 2001–the two women had big followings at San Francisco’s popular Global Yoga, founded by the remarkable Mary Jarvis–the studio has evolved into a vibrant mini community center on some level, with workshops, body work, coaching, nutrition, skin care and, well, plenty of yoga. Beyond its Bikram offerings, there are Vinyasa classes, as well as Yin/Restorative, a silent class and meditation. All that is good, however the main thing that stands out here is how well the owners nurture their clientele and, without much effort it seems, lure them in to participate in their ever-expanding enterprise that trickles back into the community. The works of local artists and photographers can often be seen on the walls. Locals are also invited to speak at workshops–think Oprah’s Soul Sunday series in a more relaxed environment. Encouragement abounds. You feel it the moment you walk in the door. And let’s face it, for any of us who are spiritually inclined and have done something like yoga or meditation, it doesn’t take much to actually pick up on the vibe of a place. Good juju exists here and the ripple effects are felt outside the door. Fitting, because what was it I once heard? True yoga takes place off the mat. Here’s to bending a little–or, in this case, a lot.

Robert Holden / Shift Happens
Folks may recall Holden’s PBS special Shift Happens! or his two BBC-TV docs on happiness. An author of numerous books–“Happiness NOW!”, “Shift Happens!”, “Holy Shift!” and his latest “Life Loves You,” co-written with “You Can Heal Your Life” maven Louise Hay, Holden’s approach to living a more balanced, vibrant life has been well received, to say the least. His book “Shift Happens” morphed into a popular weekly Hay House Radio show, which has now attracted an impressive posse of motivational speakers and new thought agents–from Esther Hicks and Dorene Virtue to Norman Shealy and Caroline Myss. The intention here is offer listeners an opportunity to tap into their own power more fully and step into life in new ways, creating a remarkable transformation. Change they say, is not often easy, but for those us out there that want shift to occur, it’s refreshing to know that we don’t have to go at it alone. Here’s to Holden’s thoughtful approach and the impact it generates.

Cop Spotted Playing Football With Kids: ‘We Need To Earn Back Respect From The Community’

For this cop, serving the community means making a meaningful connection with its residents.

C.J. Mullinax, a police officer in Bennettsville, South Carolina, decided to take some time out to throw around a pigskin with kids in a housing development area, according to ABC15. The delightful interaction was caught on camera by Lorenzo Adams, who was driving by at the time, and shared the video on Facebook, this past Tuesday.

The post quickly went viral, with almost 170,000 shares as of Friday afternoon. And while the clip has captured hearts across the Internet, the officer maintains that engaging with kids is just part of his job.

“That’s how you gain the community’s trust,” Mullinax explained to ABC News. “Not all cops are bad, but because of what some bad cops have done, we need to earn back respect from the community.”

The policeman told ABC15 that he was on patrol when he saw the kids waving to him, and ended up being the quarterback in a game of football. Though law enforcement may not be closely associated with fun and games, Bennettsville Police Department Police Chief Larry McNeil said he encourages interactions like this.

“I believe you can do so much more chasing a kid while holding a basketball or football than chasing a kid while holding a baton or gun,” McNeil told ABC News. “I always tell my guys they can do more with what’s between their ears — their brain — than the holster on their side.”

Mullinax took to Facebook to express his thanks for the outpouring of support he’s received.

“I’ve always wanted to make a difference,” he wrote on the social networking site. “That was my priority in this career decision. I’m so blessed to be touching so many people by just playing football with some kids.”

Moms In Need Get Clothing, Toiletries For Their Families Just In Time For Mother’s Day

Movers around the country are helping to get essential items to mothers in need, just in time for Mother’s Day.

Two Men and a Truck, a moving company, has been hosting annual donation drives across the U.S. for mothers at partnering women’s and family shelters as part of an initiative called “Movers for Moms.” The group is delivering the items, which will include clothing and toiletries, around Sunday.

One homeless mother who requested to be anonymous is currently staying at the Druid House in Baltimore, one of the shelters involved. She told HuffPost that the initiative is more than a nice gesture.

“Especially as mothers with children, we don’t want [our children] to see us struggling with the basic needs,” she said. “When somebody has made that effort to provide those things to you … it might seem like something so small but it really gets rid of some of the concern and the stresses.”

collection drive

A variety of organizations, schools and local businesses are working with Two Men and a Truck to contribute items or serve as donation drop-off locations, according to a representative of the company. Items donated can range from basic clothing like underwear or socks, to hygiene products such as toothpaste and soap. Last year, Movers for Moms donated 220,000 goods to mothers in need, a press release pointed out.

The Druid House resident told HuffPost that buying items like toothpaste and soap isn’t so simple for people in her position. She explained that because people at the shelter may have difficulty traveling to a convenience store, or have little income, some of these products are not as accessible as one may think.

“You’re thinking ‘How are you gonna get it” or ‘Where are you gonna get it?’ ‘How are you going to afford it?’ ‘How are you going to get to the store?'” she told HuffPost of the complications preventing her from purchasing necessities.

The resident told HuffPost that she’s grateful for the donations, and it’s a moving thought to know that people are willing to help her and others in need.

“When people work together to do those things, it really lets you know that somebody cares. And the children feel it too,” she said. “They are so happy and excited when they know somebody is caring about them, and sometimes you just need to know that.”

Charlize Theron: ‘Girls Need To Know That Being A Feminist Is A Good Thing’

Every time Charlize Theron opens her mouth we fall in love with her more and more.

In a recent interview for ELLE UK’s June 2015 issue, the Oscar-winning actress discussed her experiences with the wage gap in Hollywood and how she refuses to be objectified by filmmakers.

She stressed that women need to stand up for themselves when it comes to being paid fairly — starting with simply asking to be. “I have to give them credit because once I asked, they said yes. They did not fight it,” she said. “And maybe that’s the message: That we just need to put our foot down.”

She went on to define feminism and explain why it’s so integral to achieving pay equality. “This is a good time for us to bring this to a place of fairness, and girls need to know that being a feminist is a good thing,” Theron said. “It doesn’t mean that you hate men. It means equal rights. If you’re doing the same job, you should be compensated and treated in the same way.”

charlize theron

Theron has repeatedly stood up against the wage gap. After the massive Sony Pictures hack that revealed many actresses were paid much less than their male co-stars in recent films, Theron used the leaked information to ensure pay equality with her male co-star in her film “The Huntsman.”

“When I thought about the temperature out there — with finding out what Jennifer and Amy were being paid on a set with guy actors who are their counterparts… They’re just as good as any of the guys on there. Yeah, that p*ssed me off!” Theron told ELLE.

The 39-year-old actress also discussed what it’s like being objectified as a woman in Hollywood. “Someone thought it was a good idea to market almost the entire movie on me; objectifying me a little bit,” she said. “I got a lot of attention from it, but the problem was that, afterwards, it was like, ‘We want you to do that again. Can you just do that?’ And so I didn’t work for almost two years.”

You do you, Charlize.

Head over to ELLE UK to read more from Theron.

We Need To Change The Way We Celebrate Birthdays

For years, Dr. Christiane Northrup was the go-to source for women’s health and wellness on “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” helping to foster a conversation on everything from kegel exercises to menopause. A board-certified OB/GYN and passionate believer in the spiritual side of healing, Northrup feels that age is just a number and growing older should be an entirely different experience for women than it is today. In the above clip from her upcoming “Super Soul Sunday” interview with Oprah, she explains why changing the way we look at birthdays is the first step to living agelessly.

“I would stop celebrating milestone birthdays,” Northrup says. “Because the milestone becomes a millstone. In our culture, it says you’re running out of time. You only have so much left.”

She’s not saying to give up the party — in fact, Northrup loves to celebrate. “I like a whole birthday season,” she says.

It’s the emphasis on our age, she explains, that needs to go. “See, just getting older is not enough to celebrate,” she says. “‘Well, I’m still here.’ That’s not worth much.”

Instead, Northrup believes a birthday should be about recognizing your triumphs. “You celebrate everything that you’ve accomplished or that you’re proud of in the past year so that you have really a celebration of your worth and your increased competence,” she says. “That’s a cool thing.”

“Super Soul Sunday” airs Sunday, April 26, at 11 a.m. ET. You can also join the worldwide simulcast at Oprah.com/supersoulsunday or Facebook.com/supersoulsunday.

‘Welcome To Motherhood’ Rap Is Just What Parents-To-Be Need To Hear

Countless moms and dads have lamented the sleepless nights, messy stains, piles of laundry, and general confusion that come with welcoming a new baby home. But parents-to-be still ask, “Just how bad are those first few months?”

The hilarious moms behind “The BreakWomb” YouTube channel answer that question in their new “Welcome to Motherhood” rap. Featuring special guests Nyima Funk and Bridget Kloss-Dario, the spot-on rap video includes some informative advice about what’s to come after giving birth.

“Your nipples will crack. Your lady junk is raw. Better get some nursing pads or you’ll leak straight through your bra,” goes one verse, with another adding, “Say goodbye to sleeping. Say hello to swollen feet and get ready for a period that lasts for several weeks.”

Still, the chorus brings it back to what’s most important about having a baby: “So much love, So much love. You’re a little angel sent from heaven above.”

But let’s get back to the no sleep thing.

Everything You Need To Know About Wedding Veils

By Hollee Actman Becker for TheKnot.com

You’ve finally found a gown, but before you can breathe a huge sigh of relief, kick back and relax until your wedding day, you’ve got to find the final touch that will complete your transformation from basic to bride. It all comes down to choosing the right veil. Think the waltz is just a dance step? The chapel only a place to say your vows? Could it really be that easy? Check our glossary to find out.

2015-03-25-1427318733-3895475-veil2.jpg

Pouf
A gathered piece of tulle or netting that fastens to a comb or headpiece to create height for the veil.

Blusher
A short, single layer of veiling, the blusher is worn over the face before the ceremony, then either flipped over the head or removed thereafter.

2015-03-25-1427318808-145577-veil3.jpg

Chapel
A formal veil that extends to the floor, the chapel falls two-and-a-half yards from the headpiece. It’s often worn in combination with a sweep train and blusher for extra oomph.

Flyaway
A multi-layered veil that just brushes the shoulders. Considered less formal than other styles.

Cathedral
The mother of all veils, the cathedral is also the most formal. Sometimes referred to as the “royal veil,” this style falls three-and-a-half yards from the headpiece.

Finger Tip
A very popular length, particularly with ball gowns, this style extends to — you guessed it — the fingertips.

Elbow
As the name implies, this type of veiling extends 25 inches in length to the bride’s elbows.

Fountain
This veil is gathered at the crown of the head to create a cascading effect around the face. Usually of shoulder- or elbow-length.

Mantilla
A long, Spanish-style circular piece of lace that frames the face. Made either of lace or lace-edged tulle, the mantilla is usually secured with a comb.

A veil length that falls somewhere between the knee and the ankle.

2015-03-25-1427319034-496981-veil1.jpg

Also known as a cage veil, Birdcage veils are typically a 9″ piece of netting that drapes off the side of the head, which allows your lips to by free.

Plan the ultimate vacation-a week anywhere in the world. Draw creepy critters, try tongue-tripping-twisters, and unscramble anagrams. It’s all so entertaining that no one will ask the dreaded question: Are we there yet?
