This Is The Actual Inspiration Behind Those Crazy Outfits At The Met Gala

Monday night’s Met Gala left onlookers speechless with the elaborate gowns and overall commitment to the theme, “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology.”

This year the annual exhibit, which opens up to the public at the Metropolitan Museum of Art shortly after the eve of the gala, examines the relationship between hand-made and machine made garments over time. The result? An even bigger display of mind-blowing gowns than those usually seen on the red carpet.

The museum’s website explains that the exhibit, which features over 150 ensembles, will “address the founding of the haute couture in the 19th century, when the sewing machine was invented, and the emergence of a distinction between the hand (manus) and the machine (machina) at the onset of mass production.”

There are feathers! There is intricate design! And if you thought the train on Zoe Saldana’s dress was long, well:

Enough said.

Feast your eyes on the gorgeous gowns below, and if you’re in New York, be sure to visit the exhibit, which runs May 5 to August 14.

The Most Crazy-Expensive Outfits at Coachella: A $3,350 Dress as a Shirt! A $3,980 Denim Shorts Outfit!

For most Coachella-goers, a weekend in the desert is a time to get grungy (and plan their shower-less beauty routines accordingly). But for celebs, the dirt, heat and sweat somehow don’t have any effect on their style. In fact, they pack only the most expensive, high-end, straight-off-the-runway pieces for their weekend in the desert: One star actually wore $ 13,584.99 worth of designer duds. Read on to find out who!

Kiernan Shipka Coachella 2016Ari Perilstein/Getty; Michael Kovac/Getty; REX/Shu

Kiernan Shipka may be 16 years old, but she’s not like any other teenager on the planet. While most teens hit the mall, shopping stores like Forever 21 and H&M, for their fringe and jorts, for Shipka it’s all high-end all the time. In fact, three of the outfits she sported throughout the weekend racked in at a grand total of $ 13,584.99. You read that right.

The first look is far more sensible than the rest (yes, we’re calling her $ 695 floral Rebecca Taylor midi sensible) and it’s not just because she paired it with comfy New Balance sneakers ($ 109.99). It’s because her denim butterfly-printed Valentino two-piece rings up at $ 3,980 ($ 2,190 for the shorts, $ 1,790 for the top). Plus, her Stella McCartney platforms cost $ 1,100.

But she didn’t stop there: She topped her $ 4,000 blue jean getup with another haute piece. Her watercolor dress is from Dior’s Spring 2016 collection and retails for $ 5,500 — but because she lined hers with a top and short underneath, that adds another $ 2,200 to the bill. (The $ 1,100 platforms made another appearance here too.)

The Brand-New Princess Sofia Just Wore 4 Chic Outfits in 1 Day

One of the world’s newest royals is Princess Sofia, formerly Sofia Hellqvist, who married Sweden’s Prince Carl Philip this summer. Her style was good as a commoner and her Ida Sjöstedt wedding gown made a serious point: this was a woman ready to give Kate Middleton a run for the best-dressed royal title (or, ahem, Princess Mary, who officially took the honor).

Earlier this week Sofia and her hubby made their first royal trip to Värmland. The royal couple arrived by train (something Kate and Wills would totally do too) and the princess’s outfit was built for comfy traveling. She paired cropped trousers with Ferragamo ballet flats, covered up with a Gant suede coat, and carried a totally non-flashy bag from Longchamp.

To spend some time in the countryside, she got more practical, swapping out the ballet flats for wellies. Her suede coat wouldn’t have put up a good fight against the rain either, so it was replaced by a long-sleeve white blouse.

Princess Sofia switched into her third outfit for the afternoon. The handsome pair visited the home of Swedish writer Selma Lagerlöf, and Sofia chose a simple outfit, tucking a white top into a simple skirt.

A dinner for 60 offered up Sofia’s final chance of the day to get dressed. She opted for more simplicity with a knee-length black shift dress, beige Saint Laurent heels, and sheer tights—just like Duchess Kate. Until we get access to the pic, see the whole outfit here. We already knew the new princess could rock skinny jeans with the best of them. With official proof that she’s a rock star when it comes to royal outings too, it’s clear she’s got serious style.

Ode to a Royal Fashion Icon: 15 Princess Diana Outfits That You May Not Have Seen Before

It’s hard to believe that Monday, August 31, will mark 18 years since the tragic death of Princess Diana. And while the People’s Princess died at the young age of 36, she certainly left her mark on the world and of course, on style.

Diana is famous for having fun with fashion. In the ’80s is was all about bold colors—fuchsia! cerulean! amethyst!—prints, and the most decadent collection of diamond tiaras, befitting of a princess. Later on in the ’90s she went for a sleeker look in line with the times. With Gianni Versace as a close friend and go-to designer, she transformed into Di 2.0. Her look got ultra sophisticated with elegant suits in sherbet hues and body conscious tank dresses in stark white or midnight blue, accentuating her piercing blue. Here, we look back to one of the great fashion icons with vintage photos of our favorite looks, that inspire us still.

January 1981: Diana is at the races in the U.K. here, but she looks very fall 2015 with her brown hat and ruffled Victorian blouse.

February 1984: The Princess loved coordinating her hat to her dress or coat. She wore this red coat and pillbox hat on a visit to Birmingham.

June 1987: Diana wore one of her quintessential puff-shoulder suits with matching ivory pumps to the Royal Ascot in the U.K.

February 1987: The Princess went ’80s rocker for a night at the theater with red leather pants and a striped silk blouse.

November 1988: She wore this one-shouldered printed Catherine Walker gown to a gala at the British Embassy. Walker was one of her favorite designers.

July 1989: Attending the Bolshoi Ballet’s Swan Lake in a soft, color-block column.

November 1989: Wearing what she herself called the “Elvis dress” in Hong Kong.

November 1989: Embracing color in a red and purple suit with coordinating hat in Hong Kong.

December 1990: Houndstooth goes electric with this fun skirt suit that she wore in Sandringham, while visiting the disabled.

May 1990: Wearing a embroidered white Catherine Walker gown with her famous sapphire and pearl choker in Hungary.

January 1995: Wearing a sleek navy gown to accept her CFDA Award in New York City.

September 1995: She wore this white Versace tank dress to a concert benefiting Bosnian children.

October 1996: Wearing a cerulean blue gown with an asymmetrical neckline in Sydney.

June 1996: Wearing an amethyst gown by Versace and matching shoes by Jimmy Choo to a gala in Chicago.

June 1997: In lavender Versace in Washington, D.C., to give a speech at the Red Cross.

The Best Places to Shop for Jeans, Dresses, and Work Outfits If You’re Size 26/28

By Sarah Conley

If you love fashion, getting dressed should be a treat. That is, of course, unless you happen to be plus-size. Headlines will have you believe that the plus-size fashion industry is booming, but if you wear a size 26/28, the fashion-forward options are still extremely limited. For example, Violeta by Mango stops at a size 22, while fast-fashion retailers like Fashion to Figure, ASOS, and H&M+ stop at a size 24.

Although shopping in retail stores is possible at only a handful of brands, there are more retailers to be found online. We know you’ve got places to be and people to see, so we’ve put together this quick and easy shopping guide to navigating the best brands that offer sizes 26 and 28.

Workwear: Lane Bryant
When it comes to workwear, Lane Bryant is a classic. Its pants come in a variety of hem lengths and cuts, and the assortment includes a few trend colors every season. For jackets, the retailer has everything from soft motos to classic stretch blazers, plus plenty of top options to mix in for variety.
Other options: ELOQUII, IGIGI, Lands’ End

Workwear top picks:

Lena Sexy Stretch Printed Ankle Pants, $ 64.95 at Lane Bryant

Lena Trousers, $ 69.95 at Lane Bryant

Tailored Stretch Suit Jacket, $ 79.95 at Lane Bryant

Dresses: Kiyonna and IGIGI
While most brands offer dresses, Kiyonna and IGIGI lead the pack. Between the two, they stock dresses for every occasion—from the office to dinner, date night, and every wedding in between. Strengths: Kiyonna is great at designing bust- and waist-enhancing dresses in solid colors; IGIGI has fun with saturated jewel tones and prints, effortlessly mixing them into daytime and office-appropriate styles. It also has a small but mighty selection of gowns and bridal.
Other options: Lane Bryant, ELOQUII, eShakti, SimplyBe

Dresses top picks:

Sweetheart Knit Wrapdress, $ 98 at Kiyonna

Ryna Dress in Indigo Wave, $ 128 at IGIGI

Dominique Dress in Jade, $ 118 at IGIGI

Since its relaunch in 2014, ELOQUII has become known for midi skirts. The brand’s classic Studio Midi Skirt comes in nine colors—and that’s not counting trend-driven options in exclusive prints and seasonal textures. ELOQUII launched sizes 26 and 28 earlier this year, and the extended sizes selection includes a variety of maxi, pencil, circle, and tulle skirt options.
Other options: eShakti, Lane Bryant

Skirts top picks:

Studio Midi Skirt in Blue Iris, $ 89.90 at ELOQUII

Mixed Stripe Pencil Skirt, $ 69.90 at ELOQUII

Plaid Chiffon Maxiskirt, $ 99.90 at ELOQUII

Denim: Torrid
Torrid has perfected plus size denim. The brand boasts 11 fits in 27 washes, and even when you narrow down the options by size 28, you’re still presented with more than 150 different styles. Plus, you can shop by length, ranging from extra short all the way to extra tall. There are boyfriend jeans, jeggings, and boot-cuts aplenty.
Other options: Old Navy, Lane Bryant

Denim top picks:

Boyfriend Jeans—Dark Wash, $ 64.50 at Torrid

Trip Skinny Denim Pants, $ 68.50 at Torrid

Slim Boot Jeans—Dark Rinse, $ 58.50 at Torrid

Weekend and Casual: Old Navy
Old Navy has great basics and athleisure styles across the board, but tops are where the brand really shines. Essentials like soft basic tees, chambray shirts, and easy button-downs rotate in and out seasonally, with the best pieces moving super quickly, so keep an eye out (and act fast). Plus, you can always count on them for a classic Breton stripe.
Other options: Torrid, Lands’ End

Weekend and casual top picks:

Boyfriend Chambray Shirt, $ 36.94 at Old Navy

Two-Tone Stripe Boyfriend Shirt, $ 39.94 at Old Navy

Windowpane-Plaid Top, $ 24.94 at Old Navy

11 Cute Summer Outfits That You Can Ride A Bike In

According to The New York Times, women in New York City just aren’t as into biking as men are.

One of the main reasons: fashion.

The Times reported that women tend to have wardrobe concerns, especially when it comes to riding a bike to work. Personal stylist Yael Steren told the paper that she advises clients who commute by bike to bring a change of clothes with them. “The more polished and well put-together you are, people will take you more seriously,” she said.

Photographer and cyclist Sam Polcer begs to differ. “It’s a myth that you have to wear spandex or your sweaty gym clothes if you’re going to ride a bike,” said Polcer, who founded The Preferred Mode, a blog that features stylish riders doing their thing. He’s photographed women wearing anything from heels to maxi skirts while riding their bikes. “What’s been most surprising to me is that you actually can ride a bike in heels, you just don’t put your heel on the pedal.”

While we don’t recommend riding in heels, we do say that your outfit should never stop you from riding a bike. It’s summer—have fun! So get inspired by these 11 stylish women featured on The Preferred Mode and grab your helmet. It’s time to ride.

Try a sleeveless blouse knotted at the waist, a floral printed skirt and strappy flats.

A belted romper is a terrific choice for a weekend ride.

A cotton sundress is classic for a breezy bikeride (you can toss your heels in the basket!)

Pair that cute matched set with wedge sandals.

A fit-and-flare dress with flat slip-ons and a backpack is great for really hot days.

A floaty silk mini-dress and cross body bag work well for a weekend jaunt.

Go for an artsy look with a fitted tank, printed midi skirt, and clogs .

A pretty pleated skirt with a sleeveless blouse is commuter-friendly.

Did someone say casual Friday? A white cotton shirt and A-line dress with white sneakers is your go-to to ease into the weekend.

A belted shirtdress gives you some room to ride and is office-polished, too!

Is there anywhere a black jumpsuit can’t take you? Nope!

Five Easy Summer Work Outfits for Every Day of the Week

If you find the act of getting dressed for work during the summer to be the worst, allow us to be of service. We’ve put together five fail-safe summer outfit idea formulas that you can use for everyday of the week. Thanks to these stylish ladies, you’ll no longer have to stand in front of your closet wondering just what the heck you’re going to wear to the office.

work-outfit-formula-belted-shirt-dress-wedges-1Monday: A button-down dress + skinny belt + wedges. You’re most likely in #strugglemode on the first day of the week, so make getting dressed for the office as easy as possible. Go with a button-down shirt dress cinched at the waist and heels that aren’t too high.

work-outfit-formula-TJ-shorts-blazer-blouseTuesday: A blazer + tailored shorts + pumps. By this time you’ve shaken off the sleepy vibes of Monday and have your style sea legs under you. Put together an outfit that says, “I actually tried,” like a blazer, frilly blouse, a pair of tailored shorts, and sharp pumps.

work-outfit-ideas-formula-TJ-jane-keltner-de-valle2Wednesday: A silk blouse + A-line skirt + ankle-strap sandals. Celebrate Hump Day (and the beginning of the end of the week) in an outfit that looks like it took way longer to put together than it actually did. Might we suggest a silky blouse, a structured skirt, and ankle-strap sandals.

work-outfit-formula-t-shirt-dressy-a-line-skirt2Thursday: A T-shirt + knee-length skirt. Get away with wearing a T-shirt at the office with the help of a fancy knee-length skirt. Now you’re dressed for both a meeting with the boss and happy hour drinks with friends.

work-outfit-idea-formula-TJ-culottes-cropped-summer-sweater2Friday: Culottes + a crop top + heels. You’ve made it! The end of the week calls for comfort—culottes and a cropped summer sweater should do the trick. Add heels for an after-work dinner and drinks date with your love.

7 Outfits That Will Inspire You to Wear a White T-Shirt This Weekend

As basic as it may look, a white T-shirt has some genius properties. You can modify it at the drop of the dime, match it with pretty much everything, and use it to turn up or dial down an outfit. If you’re in search of inspiration for white T-shirt outfit ideas, look no further than the following seven women.

A white tee is a cool complement to a dressy diaphanous skirt. Amp up the monochromatic look with a pile of bangles and bright heels.

Play with proportions: A longer top, short-shorts, and ankle-length vest make for an interesting combination.

A simple white shirt ensures printed pants are the focus of your outfit. Add dimension to the look with cool accessories like a furry clutch, pendant necklace, and cateye sunglasses.

Knot the hemline of your shirt to create an on-the-go crop top.

Try it with boyfriend jeans and fringe heels for an impromptu date-night look.

A tucked in top lends an oh I just tossed this on-type of vibe to a knit midi skirt and heels.

Match the laid-back nature of a printed jumpsuit with your comfiest T-shirt.

Michelle Obama’s U.K. Tour Outfits Will Make You Fall in Love With Her Style All Over Again

Last week Michelle Obama, with daughters Malia and Sasha and mother Marian Robinson, set off on a goodwill cultural tour of England and Italy. On the six-day trip, which the First Lady used to promote the Let Girls Learn and Let’s Move initiatives, Obama wore European and American designers, reminding us of why we can’t get enough of her personal style. It was like 2008 all over again, when Obama first hit the scene and major fashion crushes ensued.

For the first stop on her global tour the First Lady arrived at Stanstead airport, wearing a yellow-and-blue lace Preen by Thornton Bregazzi dress. You can find a similar style on sale at for $ 960.

During the visit to London, Obama met with students and educators at the Mulberry School for Girls to discuss how the two countries are working together to enable access to education for young girls around the world. Her multicolor Mary Kantrantzou dress popped against the girls’ uniforms.

Obama wore U.K. designer Christopher Kane for a visit to 10 Downing Street. She teamed the black and floral embroidered dress with black Jimmy Choo kitten heels.

After her time in the U.K., Obama and family jetted off to Milan, where she discussed her Let’s Move initiative. She arrived in a fit-and-flare custom Duro Oluwu dress, with Sasha in a seersucker American Apparel dress, and Malia in heather gray.

On her second day in Milan, Obama wore a Missoni knit dress as she toured the U.S. Pavilion at the Milan Expo. “It was a beautiful surprise,” Angela Missoni told WWD upon learning the FLOTUS chose the striped dress for the trip. “It’s a beautiful thing; it’s the first time she has been photographed wearing a dress from an Italian brand,” added Missoni.

After receiving some flak for wearing only European designers on her tour, Obama chose a red shirtdress by American designer Michael Kors. The patriotic look, paired with simple black flats, was perfect for the baby shower Obama threw for moms-to-be who were stationed at the U.S. and NATO military base in Venice.

Later, Obama toured Venice, visiting the U.S. Pavillon of the Venice Biennale venue, wearing a V-neck sleeveless floral-print dress. She teamed the bold number with black gladiator sandals.

On the last day of the trip, Obama went with a kimono-sleeve dress and metallic sandals. Malia and Sasha chose wide-strap shift dresses, dainty necklaces, and simple flats.

Read more about Michelle Obama’s trip, including a snippet of the speech she gave at the Mulberry School for Girls.

Rumer Willis and Demi Moore Look Exactly Alike in These Matching Outfits

The world’s gotten to see a whole lot more of Rumer Willis ever since her big turn (and win!) on Dancing With the Stars. And if anyone needed convincing that she looks a lot like famous mom Demi Moore, she posted an Instagram over the long weekend that’s going to leave you kind of speechless.

That moment when you realize you actually are becoming your mother #twinning #imnotmad

A photo posted by Rumer Willis (@ruelarue) on

Hello, twinning! Mom and daughter rocked identical black jumpsuits with similar-looking glasses (and both women have hair that’s about the same length). It made for a pretty amazing photo op, but there could be science at play too—psychologists have studied fashion mirroring in teens and found that adopting similar style has to do with identifying who we’d like to be and working toward it. Fascinating, huh?

Ultra Music Festival 2015: The People And Outfits We Loved (NSFW PHOTOS)

Crazy outfits, neon, and a definite excess of exposed skin are staples of the 3-day electronic music rager down in Miami.

It’s the 17th year of the Ultra Music Festival which has attracted the high profile talents of Tiesto, Avicii, Alesso, Nicky Romero, Paul Van Dyk, Bassnectar, David Guetta, and Skrillex. Up-and-comers like Goldfish, Kygo, and Klingade are set to take over the scene and hypnotize the crowd with their melodic beats and cascading sounds of pianos, saxophones and xylophones.

The entire gamet of the electronic dance music genre is covered, from trance to dubstep, tropical house to deep house, trap to techno. With such an impressive lineup and range of artists, EDM and festival fans flock to Miami’s Bayfront Park for the 3-day festival that attracts over 150,000 people with crunchy beats, mind-numbing light shows and non-stop dancing.

Fashion standards for the weekend include crazy wigs and edible jewelry, and attracts more neon than a 711 sign does to a fly. Some of our favorites include the iconic Nintendo characters of Mario & Luigi, a cat on a moped, and lots of national pride.

Kim Kardashian And Kanye West Rock Matching Outfits To The 2015 BET Honors

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have made it clear they love to dress alike, whether they’re on the streets of Brooklyn in the same casual attire or front row at a fashion show in matching cleavage-baring ensembles. The couple took its matchy-matchy tendencies to the 2015 BET Honors on Saturday, where the two wore all-black Balmain outfits. Kardashian opted for a demure gown with small cut-outs, while West wore a tailored suit. And of course, they each had unamused facial expressions:

Lauren Conrad’s 7 Absolute Best Outfits of 2014

It’s fascinating to me that I’ve been obsessing over Lauren Conrad‘s outfits since…my freshman year of college when Laguna Beach premiered. Even if some of those early looks make us cringe now, she’s forever had her finger on the zeitgeist of what we want to shop and this year was no different, with chic, girly outfits it’s hard not to love (her wedding dress, included!)

LC’s a good reminder that monochrome doesn’t have to mean the exact same shade. Her melange of army greens looks chic and comfy.
There’s nothing not simple about this combo, but it stands out to me for how very right every little detail is. The thin striped sweater that hangs to hip level, the basic bucket bag, and her rich tortoiseshell sunnies. Every single piece is a workhorse item you’d wear again and again.
Even her take on tough leather-look black skinnies felt a bit preppy thanks to the striped button-down and skimmers.
Denim and black is a new modern pair that’s easy to pull off (copy her lead and pick a light wash, since darker styles don’t provide quite the right amount of contrast). Full disclosure: after I saw this pic for the first time, I completely accessory-stalked her and bought the same Elizabeth and James bag. It’s amazing.
From the front view, I wasn’t as in love with this summery look—it looked like a beyond-basic skater skirt and t-shirt. From the side, though, it’s a different story. I adore how what seemed like a simple tee actually has that long knotted tail.

Have you loved Lauren’s style for a long time, too? Want to reminisce about Laguna or The Hills? I’m always down for some of that.

P.S. If you’re still trying to nail down your New Year’s Eve outfit, Lauren shared party ideas or you can try one of my 22 combos that can be created with pieces already in your closet. Cheers!

Too Cute: Christmas Throwback Outfits From the Kardashians, Beyoncé and Solange

Proof that celebrity holidays also involve spending time with family and digging through old photo albums: throwback outfit snaps from the Kardashian clan and Beyoncé and Solange. They’re all better women than me, since the old photos I just spotted posted on my grandparents’s fridge made me want to die of embarrassment, not share on social media.

The Knowles sisters wore matching puffy-sleeved dresses that my elementary school self would’ve been all about. In fact, I think my sister and I could probably dig out a similar looking photo if we tried hard enough (or were that brave).

The Kardashians were adorable in matching sweatsuits with Christmas trees and, true to current form, each put her own spin on the look with unique accessories: Kourtney wore white tights, Kim did high socks, and Khloe rocked a onesie.

Now, in one of those “my, how far they’ve come” moments, I’d like to remind you what Khloe wore to her mom’s Christmas Eve party this year.

Sexy lady!

Did your Instagram feed blow up with old photos while your friends were home for the holidays? Did you share any or were you too embarrassed, like me?

Lea Michele & Darren Criss Sing ‘Wizard Of Oz’ In Black-Tie Outfits

Lea Michele and Darren Criss took their “Glee” show on the road and to the red carpet of the Jonsson Cancer Center’s 19th Annual Taste For A Cure benefit in Beverly Hills, Calif. The co-stars traded in their McKinley High School gear for, respectively, a long, sheer dress and a dapper tux, and performed “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” from “The Wizard Of Oz.”

Michele voices Dorothy in the new animated Oz-inspired movie, “Legends Of Oz: Dorothy’s Return,” so it’s no surprise she chose to channel the iconic character. She posted a snippet of the performance on Instagram and wrote, “And then this happened!” Take a look here:

Sisqo’s 10 Craziest Outfits

Happy 35th birthday to thong watcher extraordinaire, Sisqo!

The singer exploded onto the scene over a decade ago with his 2000 solo release of the “Thong Song,” which became an inescapable jam of the early millennium.

The Baltimore native dabbled in acting and proved his dancing skills as host of the MTV show, “Sisqo’s Shakedown.” Now, he is rumored to make a comeback, unleashing the dragon once more in 2014.

Sisqo made many contributions to pop culture, though none as influential as his fashion. Celebrate the star with a look at his 10 most ridiculous outfits.

1. Solo artists need a signature look. And for Sisqo, his go-to was leather. Here, he donned a yellow catastrophe at a ClickRadio launch party.

2. Then, he took coordination to new heights: pairing a patchwork leather suit with a matching headband and a BEEPER.

3. Sisqo mixes it up in paisley and a bucket hat. The epitome of 2001.

4. An appropriate look for the 43rd Annual Grammy Awards. There’s the leather again. And the dragon chain with matching embroidery.

5. Just when you thought Sisqo wore every iteration of leather imaginable, he outdid himself. Studded. Monogrammed. Overalls.

6. Sisqo does oversized animal skin best. That cap is questionable, though … it’s giving off a serious lunch lady vibe.

7. Ill-fitting denim and a flag headband scream America. Or something?

8. This is a refreshing twist on the Canadian tuxedo.

9. Spray painted blue hair is not for the faint of heart. Neither is matching it to your drooping tie.

10. Sisqo almost gets it right, but he misses the classy memo by unbuttoning his shirt to the navel.
