Paris Hotels Set for Full Occupancy During Couture Week

NO VACANCY: Paris Couture Week and Euro 2016 are set to lift Paris’ hoteliers’ spirits, in the grim climate for tourism following the Paris and Brussels attacks.
Paris Couture Week, slated from July 3 to 7, is to coincide with the UEFA soccer tournament, which is to run for its part from June 10 to July 10. The quarterfinals match set for July 3 at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis outside Paris is to fall on kickoff day of Couture Week.
“We’re typically already at the highest level of occupancy during fashion week,” a spokeswoman for the Plaza Athénée said, expecting an even busier week this season due to Euro championship factor, based on the early feedback of the hotel’s booking department. Spokeswomen for the Royal Monceau and the Bristol Paris echoed the sentiment. (July 10, the day of the final match, is unavailable on the booking section of the Bristol Paris’ Web site.)
The Ritz Paris is still cornering its reopening date — initially planned on March 14 —  following a fire that broke out on the top floor of the hotel on Jan. 19. June 1 is the first date when guests can start booking on the hotel’s Web site, with

John Oliver Has A Profanity-Filled Message For Paris Attackers

John Oliver has an unequivocal message for those responsible for the terror attacks that killed more than 130 people in Paris on Friday: F**k you.

Oliver started Sunday’s episode of “Last Week Tonight” with a few words about the deadly assaults.

“There are a few things we can say for certain,” Oliver said before telling the audience he was about to unleash a “moment of premium cable profanity.”

“First, as of now, we know this attack was carried out by gigantic fucking arseholes, unconscionable flaming arseholes; possibly working with other fucking arseholes, definitely working in service of an ideology of pure arseholery,” Oliver said. “Second, and this goes almost without saying, fuck these arseholes, fuck them — if I may say – sideways.”

Oliver also offered some words of support for the people impacted by the tragedy.

“Nothing about what these arseholes are trying to do is going to work. France is going to endure,” he said.

Watch the clip above to see Oliver explain why.

Karl Lagerfeld Photo Expo Bows in Paris

PARIS — “He knows exactly what he has in the frame. There are no accidents, no surprises.”
So says Eric Pfrunder, image director of Chanel and co-curator of “Karl Lagerfeld, a Visual Journey,” a sprawling and diverse photo exhibition that opens at the Pinacothèque de Paris art gallery here Friday and runs through March 20.
Pfrunder knows better than anyone. In January 1987, when Chanel’s couturier complained to him about the quality of some press-kit photos, Pfrunder dared him do better. “I said to Karl, ‘OK, now you do it,’” he recalled on Thursday during a walk-through of the spare, dimly lit showcase.
Of course, Lagerfeld has never stopped shooting – campaigns, editorials and artistic imagery — always choosing the best location, the best lighting and without any waffling, according to Pfrunder.
“Karl has an eye,” he marveled. “He’s not taking 300 shots. He’s doing five, maybe six. Generally, it’s the first frame that is the best. He’s very fast because he has one vision, and that’s it.”
While Lagerfeld is reluctant to describe his photographic style, Pfrunder cited a storytelling approach, and a distinct “atmosphere” heightened by strong contrast. “When it’s black, he likes it deep black,” he said, pointing to a never-before-seen nude series of

Opening Ceremony Brings Mission Chinese Food to Paris

HOT STUFF: Humberto Leon and Carol Lim stirred together some of the fashion pack’s favorite ingredients – a hot young chef and a smartphone with razor-sharp picture quality – for a dinner in Paris celebrating the new partnership between their Opening Ceremony label and Samsung on a special accessory collection.
The duo flew in Angela Dimayuga, executive chef of cult New York eaterie Mission Chinese Food, to cook up a meal for friends and editors in town for Paris Fashion Week. “Carol and I love food, and we’re not shy about it,” said Leon. “It’s super exciting to have everyone be able to experience this.”
Dimayuga whipped up a feast including braised peanut and woodear mushroom, drunken fish en papillote, mapo tofu and tea fragrance rice for guests including Leigh Lezark and Geordon Nicol, Susanna Lau, Leaf Greener and Kenzo chief executive officer Eric Marechalle.
The Chongqing chicken wings, packed with “explosive chili,” lived up to their billing. Lim confessed she knows the menu by heart.
“You know how some places you go and you’re like, ‘That was an amazing experience, maybe I could go once a year’? But this restaurant has this quality about it where all the dishes are so unique, and

Document Magazine Hosts Paris Dinner

FANTASY DINNER: Document magazine and stylist Olivier Rizzo hosted a dinner in Paris on Saturday night to celebrate the New York-based title’s fall issue.
There was an intimate vibe in the salon of Lapérouse, the art-stuffed, 18th-century restaurant on the Left Bank where the event took place.
Miuccia Prada, Raf Simons, Kris Van Assche and Simon Porte Jacquemus were among the attendees.
“It’s like a dream. It’s so perfect,” said Nick Vogelson, who cofounded Document with James Valeri, speaking of the guest list. “We chose this venue because Miuccia presented her first Miu Miu collection here.”
Jacquemus had an addition to his own fantasy dinner invitee lineup.
“I would add my cousin. It would be fun to have a child joining the table,” the designer said, referring to seven-year-old Jean, who made a sensation opening Jacquemus’ spring show. “Everything is seen differently through the eyes of a child.”
Has the experience been life-changing for Jean?
“He’s just happy he’s skipping school,” Jacquemus said with a laugh, agreeing people will keep an eye out for what’s up next for Jean and Hudson Kroenig, Karl Lagerfeld’s godson, today’s It kids of the fashion world.
Meanwhile, guests indulged on foie gras, beef and caramel soufflé – the restaurant’s signature dessert. And after

Pas de Calais Sets First Paris Shop

PIED-À-TERRE: Pas de Calais, a Japanese brand named after the northern region of France, celebrated the opening of its first flagship in Paris’ trendy Marais area on Wednesday.
“The store will help us raise brand awareness in Europe, where our business is not as large as in the U.S.,” said the label’s chief executive officer Kobayashi Tsukasa, noting the Continent accounts for about 30 percent of total turnover at present.
Designer Yukari Suda said the fall collection was directly inspired by Pas de Calais’ moody weather, which translated into various shades of gray, white as well as creamy tones.
Cashmere, silk and organic, hand-woven Indian Khadi dominated the graceful lineup packed with practical and easy options.
Tie-dyed silk dresses and bathrobe-y cashmere coats stood out in particular.
“I always wanted to create comfortable garments that feel soft on the skin,” said Suda, who is also an avid collector of vintage lace from Pas de Calais, which she incorporates into her collections.
Pieces retail from $ 250 for a top; dresses average between $ 400 and $ 600, while coats start at $ 1,000.
The roughly 800-square-foot unit at 15 Rue de Poitou, which replaces former multibrand store Shine, matches the brand’s organic, artisanal feel, featuring textured walls, rustic, wooden furniture and hand-laid wooden floors resembling an arty jigsaw puzzle.

Carine Roitfeld Unveils Uniqlo Line in Paris

FEELING TIGHT: Carine Roitfeld — one of France’s most famous editors and fashion personalities — presented her 40-piece collection with Japanese retail giant Uniqlo to editors and friends on Wednesday during Paris Fashion Week. The line is set to hit stores worldwide on Oct. 28.
“I love the details,” said Roitfeld, grabbing a panther faux fur coat to show off its reversible side. “There are pockets everywhere, including on tight-fitting skirts. It’s a no-brainer but I love it.”
“I am placing an order right away. I am going to start wearing tight-fit skirts,” said Inès de la Fressange, who’s done her fifth collection for the retail giant, and calls Naoki Takizawa, Uniqlo’s creative director her “Japanese twin brother.”
Roitfeld paid tribute to the fellow French style icon: “Our styles are crisscrossing and complementary. A peacoat paired with a pencil skirt, I should have thought about it earlier,” she said with a laugh.
“We have the two most beautiful pearls of Paris,” said Paris-based fashion consultant Jean-Jacques Picart, referring to Roitfeld and de la Fressange.
“They’re two exceptional French women, with strong personalities: They are both very popular; very different but they have the same values.”
Picart, who counts Uniqlo among his clients, predicts the 179 euros,

There is Nothing Dead in This Grandiose Former Funeral Establishment of the City of Paris.

2015-09-27-1443379118-5206737-104mainpix.JPG

Art Galore.

The 104, as it is called, spelled out in French as Le Centquatre-Paris, is a multimedia art center partly funded by the city of Paris. Located in a vast compound of gigantic halls and structures, it houses dance floors, exhibit halls, stores, libraries, workshop classes and stages. Calling itself an artistic and cultural factory, the place is geared towards public service — Art as a public service is definitely a great concept!

On any given day a buzz of artists, dancers, yogis, actors, painters, sculptors, fill the cavernous space with laughter and life. Visitors pop up at the arts library, shoppers stroll through the Emmaus thrifstore. It’s at the same time neighborhoods hang-out for young skaters, and an elite art space for openings and happenings.

Its success is real and tangible. You can witness art in various forms glow right under your eyes, and see how art really is a street expression in its best form. Over 60 percent of the performing artists at the 104 are not French.

2015-09-27-1443380423-538875-104logo.png

The fall schedule of exhibition is heavy with many new shows coming up: dance performances, visual arts, circus acts, theater and music fests. Solo acts or ensemble pieces, no matter what month you are able to go, several art forms will be on display or happening, including a ball in April open to all. About 50 artists in residence are planned to offer their creations for the 2015-2016 season.

An official opening was held Sept. 26 to present the 25,000 square feet of available galleries and open spaces to the public for the new season. On Oct. 3, a Nuit Blanche (White Night) is planned, when the space will stay open all night. The calendar is so full of events that it would be impossible to see and hear everything offered to each senses.

Les Pompes-Funèbres : From Death to Life.

Located on the site of a former municipal undertaker, the name comes from the original entrance’s address, at 104 rue d’Aubervilliers. This was not the mom and pop funeral home where one would visit one deceased family member in a flower-filled room and weep. This was where hundreds of horse-drawn hearses used to park and be maintained. Now an artistic factory, it churns out events and gatherings at a vertiginous speed.

The buildings were erected in 1873 by the diocese, ruled by religious staff; later on, with the separation of state and church, the city created in 1905 the Service municipal des pompes funèbres (Municipal Service of Funeral Process), considered at the times as a liberal progress, as it meant that from then on, regardless of religion or condition, everyone was due a proper funeral.

Before that, divorced women, suicide victims, atheists, all were to be buried at night without any dignified ceremony or family members present. The municipal monopole was taking care of everything, from coffins to hearses, from porters to cemeteries. One of the important rituals after a death was to wrap the front door of the building where the deceased laid with massive black curtains on each side of the front door – those were called the pompes.

This black veil was used until the 1980s. The Municipal Monopole was still in practice until the middle of 1997. Since then, the ceremonial is now left to family and private companies.

2015-09-27-1443379187-2043800-104hearse.jpg

At the Pompes Funèbres, 27,000 hearses were in use, with a staff of 1,400, only forty of which were women. Carpenters, wood workers, steel workers, mechanics, auto body specialists, seamstresses, cooks for the on-site workers’ cafeteria. Civil servants, horse caterers and other employees were lodged on the premises. There was even a football team, musicians, and firefighters dedicated to the ensemble of constructions. The funeral parlor did not handle corpses – that was done in private parlors. Except in times of war, when the bodies of soldiers were given back to their families.

Creativity at its Best.

So the place was truly always alive (pun intended) in a way, but for some 15 years when it was closed down, before the re-birth as an art center in 2008. When I last visited at the beginning of September, I saw several artists using the multi-levels center floor as a dance stage and yoga space, kids running around huge sculptures, workers having a sandwich on beach chairs, the feel of community involvement was very tangible.

2015-09-27-1443379310-119530-104weipei.jpg

At each end of the space giant art pieces jetted to the open sky – this is a place that could easily accommodate one of Louise Bourgeois giant spider sculptures. Not every art space can. An enormous funky piece made of hundreds of bicycles wheels and frames in a sculpture by Chinese Al Weiwei named “Stacked” was taking one end of the forum – representing the transportation mode of his native country, while a metal snake of rust-color boxes was being installed for the upcoming vernissage.

2015-09-27-1443379253-9869926-104sculpture.jpg

Concerts for all ages and all style are planned for the fall schedule. Several art shows will also open at the various venues encompassed in the buildings. It’s a real artistic community all housed under one roof. A glass roof that is.

The architecture is reminiscent of the former market halles (market halls) that were once famously popular in the center of the capital. Why waste beautiful edifices? The eco friendly turn-around of the classic buildings is a testament of the creativity of its new users, all artists.

Side Shows.

A food truck selling pizzas is permanently parked inside the Centquatre. The Emmaus store resales clothes and furniture pieces at very low prices, and involves members of the community to work there. Canvas beach chairs invite people to lounge at will. Several corners are meant to be used as sitting areas, or even picnic settings.

The café’s menu is full of childhood favorites, such as toasts, soft eggs, fries and milk-shakes. It is named the Café Caché (the Hidden Café). Another resting place for food is the Grand Central restaurant, the loft-like space offering traditional French dishes at a medium range price – think sausage and lentils, beef cheeks, mussels and fries, rabbit with granny smith apples, steak with Béarnaise sauce, etc..

2015-09-27-1443379498-4706031-grandcentral.jpg

The CentQuatre had a challenge — to fill the enormous spaces spread on several city blocks, and despite its sheer size, the place works — it is both a community haven and a convivial space for all. Despite being located in an untrendy area of Paris, that has not stopped Parisians of every corner to make the trip for the sake of art. Over half a million visitors/spectators came by last year. Bravo!

Wool Gets the Spotlight at Paris Museum

PARIS – A flock of sheep invaded the Palais de Tokyo in Paris this weekend as part of a global awareness campaign orchestrated by The Woolmark Company.
The three-day event, ending Sunday, includes artwork made of wool, a photo exhibit about the natural fibre, and a series of dance performances showing off wool’s versatile nature.
Brands, including Adidas, which developed running apparel based on wool, and Dormeuil, supplier of fine wool fabrics to bespoke tailors including Cifonelli, Camps de Luca and Brioni, set up stands to let visitors get physical.
WWD caught up with Peter Ackroyd, global strategy advisor for The Woolmark Company, at the event.
WWD: What is so special about wool?
Peter Ackroyd: Its diversity. It can be made into suits, blankets or sportswear, and we think we don’t even know all the end-uses of wool. But it’s not only a very diverse fibre — at the end of its life it goes back to earth and enriches the soil. It doesn’t end up as landfill. We put a wool sweater next to an acrylic sweater in Prince of Wales’ garden. In five months, the wool sweater has almost entirely gone back to nature, the acrylic one — you just shook it and put it

Karl Lagerfeld to Get Photo Exhibition in Paris

KARL IN THE FRAME: Karl Lagerfeld trains his camera on wherever his varied interests take him: fashion, architecture, Paris at night and all manner of personalities.
All that and more will be reflected in “Karl Lagerfeld: A Visual Journey,” an exhibition of his photography slated to open Oct. 16 and run until March 20 at the Pinacothèque de Paris, a private museum just behind the Madeleine Church.
The showcase is being chosen by publisher Gerhard Steidl and Eric Pfrunder, image director at Chanel and one of the designer’s chief image collaborators, who in 1987 encouraged Lagerfeld to try his hand shooting the photos for a Chanel press kit. That would open up a new career path for the German designer, who would go on to shoot campaigns for Chanel, Fendi, Dior Homme and others, along with editorial shoots, and a slew of artistic projects for exhibitions or books.
“People always want to know about my style of photography. I can’t answer that,” according to Lagerfeld. “That’s up to viewers to decide. I don’t have a style, but several, or none. You should never stay still, neither in life, nor in fashion, nor in photography.”
Similarly, Lagerfeld experiments with all kinds of photographic and printing

Zoe Cassavetes Said Directing Film for Ritz Paris

PUTTIN’ ON THE RITZ?: Could Zoe Cassavetes have directed a film for the Ritz relaunch?
Word has it the director of “Broken English” has shot a film involving fashion people and designers for the reopening of Paris’ mythic, five-star hotel.
A spokeswoman for the Ritz Paris had no comment.
There’s a lot of anticipation for the reopening — the hotel is officially taking reservations from March 14— billed as the biggest refurbishment in the history of the 117-year-old establishment.
Cassavetes, the daughter of  actor and filmmaker John Cassavetes and Gena Rowlands, is very much plugged to the fashion world. Her fashion credentials include being a muse of Marc Jacobs, participating in Miu Miu’s “Women’s Tales” — and being a front-row regular at fashion shows.

7 Childhood Trends From The 2015 Paris Couture Week Runways

Haute couture is often viewed as spectacle rather than practical wear. But here we are at the end of Paris Couture Fashion Week, thinking of all the things we could wear from designers like Elie Saab and Fendi

If there’s one trend we noticed it’s that some of our childhood outfits made it down the runway. Remember the Champagne-colored Jessica McClintock gowns from junior prom? Ralph & Russo is trying to make them a thing. Oh, and striped tights? Looks like Jean Paul Gaultier is calling for a resurgence.

Check out the childhood trends that sauntered down the runway and be inspired to play some dress-up this weekend.

Paris: A Holiday That is Always With You

2015-05-19-1432074578-4851506-HP_1_IMG_9603_2.jpg

Every time I visit Paris, I think about the way Hemingway referred to the City of Light as a “Moveable Feast.” But I have to admit that I like the Russian translation of the title even more, “A Holiday That is Always with You.” When a few weeks ago I returned from a trip to Paris, a surprise package was waiting at my door with the book, Why LA? Porquoi Paris? An Artistic Pairing of Two Iconic Cities, by Diane Ratican. And, if that was not enough of a coincidence, the next day, I went to Paramount Studios to attend the third annual Paris Photo LA, the prestigious international photo fair with its home base at the Grand Palais in Paris.

2015-05-19-1432074632-8129173-HP_2_fountainbleu.jpg

So, let me share with you my recent adventures in and around the City of Light, where I was a guest of the Paris Region Tourist Board at the Grand hotel du Palais Royal, across from the Museé de Louvre, an ideal place to stay for any art aficionado. My hosts also arranged my first ever trip to Chateau de Fontainebleau, the imperial residence which Napoleon considered to be “the real home of kings, a house of centuries.” I was especially intrigued to see there the relatively modest — by size — private apartment of Napoleon himself. With its sprawling parks and gardens, the Chateau was the splendid home to French royalty from the 12th century until the abdication of Napoleon III in 1870. There is so much to see and to experience in Fontainebleau; one should plan to spend at least a whole day there.

The same day, we drove to resplendent Chateau de Vaux le Vicomte, which is only one hour away from Paris. In 1641, it was purchased by Nicolas Fouquet, who, several years later, became the Minister of Finance for Louis XIV. Fouquet had grandiose plans for his estate. At one time, it was said that Fouquet employed 18,000 workers to maintain his gardens and rebuild his castle. Among them were the famous architect Le Vau, the landscape designer le Notre, and artist Le Brun.

In a tragic turn of events, after lavish festivities to celebrate the opening of his estate, Fouquet — the richest man in France after the King — was arrested under a false accusation of misappropriation of public funds. Voltaire famously said, “On 17 August [1661], at 6 in the evening, Fouquet was the King of France; at two in the morning, he was nobody.” In 1875, after many years of neglect, the Chateau was sold to Alfred Sommier, and today, it is administered by his descendants and regularly opens to the public.

Back in Paris, I spent a good amount of time getting familiar with two new major cultural projects, Jean Nouvel’s Philharmonie de Paris and Frank Gehry’s Fondation Louis Vuitton. Even four months after its official opening, the Philharmonie building is still 20 percent incomplete. The building is impressive, but not particularly likeable. But, what’s important is that it has become a big success with the public from Day One, mostly due to its splendid acoustics and reasonably priced tickets. On the ground floor, there is an exhibition space, currently devoted to David Bowie; the next exhibition will feature the art of Marc Chagall.

2015-05-19-1432075454-1265309-HP_6_FLV.jpg

My visit to Fondation Louis Vuitton, the translucent glass fantasy by Frank Gehry in Boulogne Forest, made me forget the splendor of Fontainebleau and Chateau de Vaux. At the age of 86, Gehry has delivered his most adventurous, most ambitious architectural project. There is a seamless interaction between the outdoor and indoor spaces, which makes one think about the influence of Los Angeles modernist architecture.

2015-05-19-1432075513-3170910-HP_7_FLVext.jpg

One climbs up several levels of the building, discovering numerous terraces and patios. And, with every twist and turn, yet another view of Boulogne Forest with Paris in the distance is revealed. And, for the first time in his practice, Gehry chose to reveal the architectural and engineering structure of his building, the structure that made me think about the gorgeous skeleton of a gigantic dinosaur. Even compared to his celebrated Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, and his Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, Fondation Louis Vuitton shines as Gehry’s absolute best.

Apple Watch Debuts in London, Paris Stores

TIME TRAVELERS: Apple Watch made its European retail debut on Friday morning with upscale shop-in-shops at Selfridges in London, where the brand filled the windows with an installation of iridescent butterflies, and Galeries Lafayette in Paris.
The stores were packed with mostly male shoppers testing out the 38 iterations of the multitasking watch that’s part personal trainer and executive assistant, part navigation device and instant chat tool. Oh, and it tells the time, too.
“This is just fabulous: It syncs with the iPhone, which means you have the freedom to leave your phone on your desk and still be able to check on everything,” said Herbert Yip, a Hong Kong native who was visiting London with his family.
Yip said he was leaning toward ordering the sports model. “I was going to buy another device to use as my health kit, but when I knew the Apple was coming out with its own, I waited,” he explained.
The Apple Watch shop at Selfridges is located in the Wonder Room on the ground floor, which is also home to brands such as Bulgari, Chopard, Cartier and Tiffany & Co.
Apple has filled the space — which is permanent and spans about more than 1,000 square feet — with towering ficus

The Paris Review Hosts Spring Revel

MAKE MINE EXTRA DRY, PLEASE: Blame on the pre-and-post dinner open bars, or the crowd’s thirst for a George Plimpton-worthy good time, but The Paris Review’s Spring Revel lived up to its billing once again Tuesday night.
As the literary pub’s editors Lorin Stein, Louis Begley, Mona Simpson, Richard Ford, Katie Roiphe, Gary Shteyngart, Kurt Anderson, Tao Lin, Emma Cline and other scribes worked the room, former Massachusetts Governor William Weld recalled shooting the breeze decades ago with Plimpton and Hunter S. Thompson during the magazine’s 62 White Street days. “George and I shared an affinity for three-cushion billiards,” he said with a laugh. “Hunter admired my style because he thought I was more of a dissolute than I really was.
“When I was 17, I worked in Paris near the Place Vendôme. We all lived in Paris and lived and died for that,” he said somewhat wistfully.
Then fellow Harvard Hasty Pudding performer Sharon Hoge buzzed by for a quick hello and to remind him of his collegiate cross-dressing days singing, “Career girls are independent” on stage. Weld explained, “So my preparation for my career in politics was prancing around on stage wearing women’s clothes and high heels.”
“And a huge brassiere,” she

Here’s A Sneak Peak Of Kendall Jenner In Vogue Paris, And She Looks Absolutely Gorgeous

With all the hype surrounding the Kimye wedding, it’s hard to believe that anything else is going on with the Kardashian-Jenner clan at the moment.

It turns out, however, that is not the case. On the contrary, it’s been a pretty huge week for Kendall Jenner, too. Kris Jenner took to Instagram Wednesday with a sneak peek of her 18-year-old daughter’s spread in the upcoming issue of Vogue Paris, photographed by Patrick Demarchelier. Captioned “PARIS VOGUE June/July 2014 Wow @kendalljenner stunning!! Congratulations!! #proudmama,” Jenner is obviously ecstatic over the news. And we have to admit, she looks absolutely gorgeous in the photos.

This has been a whirlwind year for Kendall, who has already walked the runways at New York and Paris Fashion Weeks and starred in her own Vogue US selfie-inspired spread back in February.

What do you think of Kendall’s latest foray into high fashion? Sound off below!
