Parker Puts Web Site on Pause

Add Parker to the list of companies that have been put on pause. A spokesman for Vince Holding Corp., which acquired the Parker business in November, confirmed Tuesday it has “pressed pause” on the business partly due to the coronavirus and partly due to a planned strategic reset with new senior creative director Steven Cateron.
Cateron, who joined Parker in January from Club Monaco, where he was senior vice president for design, is taking this time to reenvision the brand with the goal of relaunching at a later date, said the spokesman. He added that Parker remains available through its wholesale partners.
The site says that the company temporarily closed its distribution center and e-commerce site. “We are still accepting returns, but please note that there may be delays in processing,” the site says. It also mentions that it’s looking forward to coming back to its loyal customers, “with a fresh perspective to help you dress for life’s moments, big and small.”
In November, Vince Holding Corp. acquired Parker and Rebecca Taylor from Sun Capital for $ 19.7 million. The deal created a portfolio of three contemporary yet distinct brands under Vince Holdings and added $ 84 million in sales to the corporation.

Remake Hopes New Film Puts Consumers in a Sustainability State of Mind

Remake, a nonprofit organization that uses original documentary footage to educate consumers about the fashion industry’s treatment of women and impact on the environment, today launched a short film, “10 Ways to Dress Like a Sustainable Pro,” featuring models from Role Models Management, an ethical agency and platform for models with interests and titles such as public health worker, doula, skateboarder, vegan activist and editor in chief.
Ayesha Barenblat, Remake’s founder, hopes the film will light a fire under the fast-fashion jeans and viscose jumpsuits of the ranks of less woke shoppers and spark the desire to consume more consciously. She knows that’s easier said than done.
“You come up against the reality that making the right choices are expensive and time-consuming,” said Barenblat, noting that many consumers continue to associate sustainable apparel with dull, crunchy or unattainably expensive clothing. “How do you make sustainability accessible to the everyday girl, so she knows that sustainable fashion can be stylish, attainable and inclusive.
“There’s so many misleading eco-conscious claims, and so much greenwashing,” Barenblat said, adding that some statistics and data points have become evangelized by the industry in spite of a lack of science-based, peer-reviewed research. “Fashion is the world’s second-biggest polluter. How

YouTuber Oliver Ryan and others have discovered that Tesla's recently released holiday update includes a Trax app for creating your own tunes. Pedro Lourenço Puts Eco-Concerns at Center of Latest Collection

ZILVER LINING: Recycled nylon, organic cotton and vegan leather made from apples are at the core of Pedro Lourenço’s new collection for Zilver, a London-based collection that is in its third season.
“In order to move the brand forward, it is important to remember the end goal, which is to be part of a collective revolution that changes the way we produce and consume products, without destroying the planet. For us, it means to continue investing in innovative materials and new methods of production,” he added.
The spring collection is filled with certified organic cotton, while a vegan leather jacket is made from apples. Shirts are done in recycled denim and nylon, while all the specific information about the materials used in the collection will be on the garment tags.
He also put an accent on multitasking pieces: Black and white blazers and trench coats can be transformed into gilets or jackets with zips.
Last year he spoke to WWD about the importance of creating “conscious pieces” and getting as close as he can to 100 percent sustainability, although “it’s still not possible to be 100 percent sustainable,” he said.
His spring 2020 collection was rooted in astrology and specifically the Gemini zodiac.

Britain’s John Lewis Revamps Offer, Puts Urban Spin on Men’s Wear

LONDON — British department store John Lewis & Partners, where customers can find everything from lamps and frying pans to flat-screen TVs and computers, is putting a fresh spin on men’s wear in a bid to speak to multiple generations, street and sneaker devotees and necktie-free urbanites.
The retail stalwart, which also owns the upmarket supermarket chain Waitrose, has held relatively steady in the crisis that is sweeping the British high street. The store continues to invest in its store real estate, own-brand merchandise, staff training and has been swinging the spotlight onto own brand and exclusive products that customers cannot buy anywhere else.
It’s a tough time for British brick-and-mortar clothing retailers in particular. They’re falling victim to online competition, fast-fashion and streetwear competitors, as well as luxury brands keen to woo younger shoppers with entry-price merchandise such as sneakers and T-shirts.
Marks & Spencer is a prime example of the struggle so many are facing: On Thursday the retailer said in a terse statement that its managing director of clothing and home, Jill McDonald, was leaving the business after two years.
M&S clothing has been struggling for some time, a victim of long-standing supply chain and sizing issues and of a younger

Milan Puts Spotlight on Young Talents

YOUNG GUNS: Milan’s Palazzo Morando on Wednesday evening was lit up for two back-to-back events hinging on fashion’s generation next: “Empower Talents 3,” hosted by Vogue Italia editor in chief Franca Sozzani and Kering chairman and ceo François-Henri Pinault, a project that offers internships at the luxury brands that are part of the French group in Italy; and the “Who is On Next? and Vogue Talents” happening, also hosted by Sozzani.
“It’s always beautiful to channel the energy of youth and work with new talents,” said Carlo Capasa, president of the Italian chamber of fashion.
“I came earlier to Milan to check out the new designers,” said Laudomia Pucci. “It’s our duty not only to find them but to help them.” How did she feel about the debut show of Massimo Giorgetti at the helm of Emilio Pucci on Thursday? “Very confident,” she grinned.
Salvatore Ferragamo’s Massimiliano Giornetti was taking a break from putting the finishing touches to his collection, to be shown on Sunday.
“It’s all ready and done,” countered Anna Molinari about her own lineup. Giambattista Valli, Lapo Elkann, siblings Alberta and Massimo Ferretti, Moncler’s Remo Ruffini, Sara Battaglia, and Elena Ghisellini also attended.

“Wood, Metal, Screw 2” Puts a Ban on Canvas – August 22, at Gabba Gallery!

“Art is very often put into categories, and the canvas dominates the art category,” explained Jason Ostro, owner of the Gabba Gallery, and co-curator of “Wood, Metal, Screw 2.” Opening on Saturday, August 22, the group exhibition celebrates alternative media, and will feature the work of forty-five artists. Ostro continues, “‘Wood, Metal, Screw 2’ is a new style art show where the medium of art on canvas is not allowed.”

Gabba Gallery is an up-and-coming gallery that has presented a long list of unique exhibitions since it opened in 2012. Unlike the typical gallery owner, Ostro is also a street artist. He has a diverse background that also includes fashion, music as well as art. Citing his mother as the impetus to luring him to the art world, Ostro has helped many emerging artists sell their work and is responsible for organizing numerous art shows. For this exhibition he and co-curator Phil Santos have gathered together a varied assortment of talented artists. “I’m looking for art that captures imagination, expresses happiness, love or sorrow,” said Ostro. “I want art that makes people feel!”

Since moving to Los Angeles in 2008, the Canadian born artist Jennifer Verge has immersed herself in her art as well as the LA art scene. Although it has not always been an easy road, Verge has persevered with a positive attitude, which is ever present in her art. “I am grateful to be a part of this particular show. This type of mixed media art really excites me,” said Verge. This will be her second time showing with the Gabba Gallery. “I’m really proud to be showing at this gallery. Jason the owner is amazing! He and Phil have curated fantastic shows together. With over 45 different artists the opening is going to bring a huge crowd…a guaranteed fun night.”

“Jennifer Verge is an artist with heart and love,” said Ostro. “It shows up in her work perfectly. Jennifer’s combination and use of materials to convey her messages are the perfect art for ‘Wood, Metal, Screw.'”

Verge will be showing one of her brand new works titled Some People Feel the Rain Others just Get Wet, which was inspired by a recent outing with her sister and some close friends during a rare LA rainstorm. “It’s important to surround yourself with people who live by these words.”

Verge has found inspiration in family and friends before. She incorporated the phrase “Enjoy your Life 24/7” into one of her first mixed media works to be shown at a gallery. “It was the last thing one of my favorite aunts said to me before she passed away,” she revealed. “It will always be one of my favorites.” The work sold that night – one might say it was a sign from above.

Nathan Cartwright, probably best known as the owner/curator of the Hive Gallery. Cartwright has played an active part of the downtown art community for over ten years. Prior to owning his gallery, he curated underground art exhibitions at Hangar 1018.

For “Wood, Metal, Screw 2,” Cartwright will be showing a sculpture titled the Ladder. The above image is a photo of just one portion of the entire sculpture. He explains, “This piece illustrates the evolution and transformation of self through playful images, robotics and lights.” The multi-dimensional work is influenced by Alchemy. The artist incorporated symbols of from several religions and perhaps a bit of his own sarcasm while commenting on the destructive roles that people choose to play. The piece also celebrates transformation. “My mission is to move my viewers to a place of play and communicate about the evolution of the self,” said Cartwright.

When asked what he thought of the theme of the exhibit, he said, “I love the concept – it is basically mixed media, constructed work and this is what I love to do! Plus, I love looking for new junk and shapes and toys to make art with…it makes every trip out of my door an adventure. Who knows? You may find the perfect cabinet door to make a masterpiece on!!!

Chicago based artist Nate Otto has been creating as long as he can remember. He is known for his imagined cityscapes, which he will be showing as part of the “Wood Metal Screw” exhibition.

“For this piece I wanted to show one building set off from the rest of the city, as living in a large city can sometimes be lonely and alienating. I was thinking about Los Angeles and I wanted to show the city tapping into a dwindling water supply below. Some of the pipes don’t reach the water level.”

Jason Ostro continues to be an active implement of change and a positive force for the survival of the arts in the Rampart District (adjacent to Silverlake). In 2013, he began the Gabba Arts District Mural Tour, which is a true labor of love. To date, he is responsible for creating over eighty murals in the area. He has utilized talented artists from all over the world to better his community.

Both Ostro and Phil Santos will each have one work in “Wood, Metal, Screw” showing along with over forty artists. When asked what he loves most about curating, Ostro answered. “The energy, the art, the pulse of fresh art.” @jasonostro @philsantosart

There will be an opening reception for “Wood, Metal, Screw” on August 22 from 7-10pm at Gabba Gallery (3126 Beverly Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90057). The event will feature guest DJ Jonathan Williams, and is sponsored by 7/11, Hubert’s and Perrier. For a full list of artists and more information about the gallery, visit

Teen’s Hilarious Senior Quote Puts New Spin On Coming Out Of The Closet

Maxwell Barrett wanted to leave high school “with a bang.” He succeeded.

The 18-year-old senior at Raritan High School in Hazlet, New Jersey, tweeted a screenshot of his yearbook photo and accompanying quote on Tuesday:

The quote, credited to “Unknown,” reads: “Of course I dress well, I didn’t spend all that time in the closet for nothing.”

“I wanted to go out with a bang,” Barrett, who is indeed very snappily dressed in the photo, told The Huffington Post. “I had never done sports, or clubs. I was always just an art student. I wanted to go out in a way people would remember me by!” He added that he didn’t come up with the quote completely on his own, but had rephrased a similar quote he’d seen online.

Barrett said he was “out” as gay to most people around him. Though he had never officially told his parents, he said he could tell that they already knew. “It was just more of a confirmation to [my parents] than a coming-out story,” he said.

And his parents’ reaction?

“They said it was the best one in the yearbook and that they were proud of me,” Barrett said. He mentioned that his classmates also loved it, and that even teachers had pulled him aside to congratulate him and comment on the quote.

Barrett said a yearbook supervisor initially told him they weren’t going to run the quote because of its “shock value.”

However, Hazlet Township Public School Superintendent Bernard Bragen could not confirm that happened.

“My understanding is that it was never pulled,” he said.

Bridget Barkan Puts A Modern Spin On A Judy Garland Classic In Honor Of Homeless LGBT Youth

Among gay audiences, Judy Garland is one of few performers who never seems to go out of style.

New York singer-actress Bridget Barkan proved that point at 2014’s “Night of a Thousand Judys” when she crooned a tender version of “As Long as He Needs Me,” which was introduced in the Broadway musical “Oliver!” and performed by Garland on her television series, “The Judy Garland Show,” in 1963.

Now in its fifth year, “Night of a Thousand Judys” — which is a special presentation of New York- and Los Angeles-based actor, writer and performer Justin Sayre’s variety show, “The Meeting,” and timed to coincide with LGBT Pride Month — will benefit the Ali Forney Center, an advocacy group dedicated to homeless lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) teens and young adults.

As in previous installments, performers from Broadway, television and downtown cabaret will hit New York’s Merkin Concert Hall at the Kaufman Center June 1 to croon songs made famous by Garland during her fabled career. The 2015 lineup includes Melissa Errico, Liz Callaway, Michael McElroy, Lauren Worsham and The Skivvies, among others.

Sayre interviewed Ali Forney Center founder Carl Siciliano for his “Sparkle & Circulate with Justin Sayre” podcast. You can check that out here.

Meanwhile, you can also view some previous performances from “The Meeting” on Sayre’s official YouTube page. For more Sayre, head to Facebook and Twitter, too.

“Night of a Thousand Judys” plays New York’s Merkin Concert Hall at the Kaufman Center on June 1. Head here for more details.

This Puts Run-Of-The-Mill Father-Daughter Wedding Dances To Shame

When bride Kandice Mickunas joined her dad on the dance floor for their father-daughter dance, she had no idea what her ‘ol pops had in store.

The dance started out traditionally — a slow number to Louis Armstrong’ “What A Wonderful World.” A few moments in, dad Jim Mickunas grabbed a glove and baseball for himself and his newlywed daughter and started throwing around the ball to the tune of John Foggerty’s “Centerfield.”

“My daughter has always found her own path,” Jim captioned a video of the dance on YouTube. “She played flag football at 6. She hated wearing dresses. She wore a tuxedo to her first communion. She lettered in soccer and track. She then became an engineer for the largest automaker in the world when she was 22. I could not imagine having a traditional father-daughter dance with her. That is not what we were or are… So I came up with this. She had no idea!”

In a sweet twist, Jim hands off the glove and ball to his new son-in-law. Watch the video above to see how it all unfolds.

‘American Sniper’ Trailer Puts Bradley Cooper Back In Oscar Season

Warner Bros. dropped the first trailer for Clint Eastwood’s “American Sniper” on Thursday, and it’s a doozy: The two-minute clip focuses on Chris Kyle, the most lethal sniper in United States history, and provides a brief window into what kind of decisions he was asked to make during his time as a Navy SEAL. Bradley Cooper plays Kyle in Eastwood’s film, and from the extra bulk on Cooper’s frame to the Texas accent he affects, it’s the kind of part that could put the two-time Oscar nominee in line for a third straight nod. Either way, keep “American Sniper” on your long list of Oscar contenders for one simple reason: Eastwood’s “Million Dollar Baby,” which had a similar “surprise” release in 2004 and went on to win Best Picture.
