AT&T's real 5G for wireless customers is live in 10 cities

AT&T's real 5G for wireless customers is live in 10 citiesAT&T promised that in 2019, it would bring real 5G to millions of customers, and now it has. In November it revealed five markets on the list to get 5G this year, but today the list of launch cities has doubled to ten:

Birmingham, Ala.
Indianapolis
Los Angeles
Milwaukee
Pittsburgh
Providence, R.I.
Rochester, N.Y.
San Diego
San Francisco
San Jose, Calif.

Coverage maps (PDF) show exactly where you can access 5G, although most people will need a new phone and to fill that need AT&T is also beginning sales of Samsung's Galaxy Note 10+ 5G. Shipments begin today for people who've preordered the $ 1,300 device, and customers can obtain them either online or in stores. With trade ins and eligible unlimited plan, that price could drop as low as $ 350.

This network is what AT&T is calling "low-band 5G," which is for consumers on mobile devices, as compared to the high-band 5G+ built to serve businesses or large stadiums and campuses. Both are based on new 5G tech, as compared to the LTE-based 5G Evolution service that customers have had access to until now. Whatever you call it, the company's plan for rapid expansion calls for nationwide 5G service by mid-2020.

This Guy Planted Fake Halloween Costumes In A Real Costume Store

Jeff Wysasky of the site Obvious Plant had a great response to the ridiculous costumes you find at most Halloween shops. They’re cheaply made, they’re inexplicably expensive, and of course, there’s always a sexy option.

So Jeff added a few new costumes to the mix.

Check out out the rest if you want, but unfortunately, you can’t actually buy them. So your laughter will be followed by your tears.

13 Times Celebrities Got Real About Mental Health

If you need proof that mental illness doesn’t discriminate, look no further than Hollywood.

Approximately one in four people globally will experience a mental health issue at some point in their lives, and that includes celebrities in the spotlight. The good news? And when it comes to mental illness, realizing you’re not alone makes dealing with it just a little bit easier.

Get Ready To Capture Pokémon In The Real World With Your Smartphone

The Pokémon franchise is venturing into augmented reality for the first time, Nintendo announced Thursday, so soon you’ll be able to catch ’em all in the real world.

The offering, called Pokémon GO, will function as an interactive game that lets players use their iPhones or Android devices to “catch” Pokémon as they go about their lives.

“Pokémon GO will use real location information to encourage players to search far and wide,” a press release says. “Pokémon GO’s gameplay experience goes beyond what appears on screen, as players explore their neighborhoods, communities, and the world they live in to discover Pokémon alongside friends and other players.”

The whole concept sounds a little like Pokémon meets geocaching, the interactive treasure-hunting game whose finds are hidden in the real world.

Part of the newly immersive experience will involve wearing Apple Watch-like tech called the Pokémon GO Plus. Users can keep the Bluetooth-connected device on when their phones are stashed away, and it will vibrate and flash if a virtual Pokémon is nearby.

The Pokémon GO Plus looks a little like a Happy Meal toy in the official photos, although The Verge has some close-up shots from a Nintendo press conference in which it seems a bit nicer. It’s unclear how much the device will cost.

This isn’t the first version of Pokémon on smartphones. Nintendo partnered with Japanese game-maker DeNA earlier this year to bring original titles featuring its famed characters to the iPhone. The first Pokémon installment, a puzzle game called Pokémon Shuffle, was released in early September.

The move to smartphones is a notable departure from Nintendo’s past strategy, which relied heavily on selling its own game consoles and devices. The Japanese company has struggled over the past few years after disappointing sales of the Wii U.

Pokémon GO will be available for free in the App Store and through Google Play. The game will permit in-app purchases, a big moneymaker for some other apps. Players of the free Candy Crush Saga spent more than $ 1.3 billion on in-app features like extra lives and moves in 2014.

Men Get Real About Sex After Menopause

2015-08-25-1440513732-8521958-EricaJagger515214.jpg

I’ve run a few pieces in this Sex After Menopause series, each of them documenting real-life stories of women navigating midlife sexuality. Hearing from women (in heterosexual relationships) is just half of the story, however. Men are clearly impacted by their lovers’ sexual evolutions, and their experience also deserves a forum. I’m grateful to the six men who agreed to share the most intimate details of their journey through menopause with the women they love.

Sam

I married my best wife when she was 48, after 14 years with my worst wife. Had about six years of a wonderful sex life — at last!

Then menopause hit and that was it. Sex became excruciating and libido packed up shop two years later (though sex only happened three to four times as we tried to see if there was any way to make it work). Doctors were no help. The only option they offered was HRT which she was afraid of due to the likelihood of encouraging breast cancer.

That was it. Game over. I’m eight years younger than my wife and frustrated as hell with no one to be angry at. I’m grateful to have met my wife and for the brief time where I did have a satisfying love life, but God, it’s been a tough road to hoe since then. I have to say, the letters you’ve gotten from couples bragging about “no problems here” do read like Penthouse Forum — unbelievable, given my experience.

James

My wife and I are in our early 70s, married 44 years and deeply, emotionally in love. My wife took HRT and avoided nearly all menopause symptoms, but at some point she lost interest in her own orgasms. Sex became all about intimacy and focused on my orgasm. She sometimes experiences brief pain on penetration which can be minimized by lube, gentleness, and angle.

We’re slowing down, but continue to make love five or six times a month, for which I am so very, very grateful. She is a sweetie.

Larry

I’m 70 and my wife is 67. We had great sex through menopause. She was in perimenopause for many years. When she got to about 65 it started to change. Intercourse became painful for her and she developed an allergy to semen. Now intercourse is out of the question and she has no desire for anything other than hugs.

Needless to say, I’m not happy. I’m still very much attracted to her and still have desire for sex in our lives every couple weeks. I guess I should be grateful to even be alive.

Matthew

I was 28 and recently separated when I met J, who was also recently separated. She was beautiful, smart, fun-loving, wise, and she had led a fascinating life. Her remarkably fit body was the result of an ongoing commitment to ballet workouts. She also was 50-years-old.

Over the next eight years, we enjoyed a wonderful life together, including a rich and varied sexual relationship. Although she had ceased to menstruate during our first year together, she never experienced a loss of libido or lubrication or the capacity for powerful orgasms. Her easy and natural sexiness was a constant inspiration to this truly fortunate man. Use it or lose it!

Phil

I am 68 and my girlfriend is 64. She is the sexiest, most orgasmic woman I have ever been with (not an especially small number as I was single in my early 30s and worked in the health care industry, where there is a high percentage of professional females).

She has an incredible sex drive, lubricates just fine (although we do use some lube), and has multiple orgasms virtually every time — and no, she is not faking.

When her late husband died (she was 56), her gynecologist told her she was done with sex. That person should not practice medicine! She was so very wrong.

Carl

I have been married to my wife for 40 years. She went through menopause in her early 40s. She had breast cancer two years before menopause. The creams didn’t really work, sex just wasn’t the same. Since she had breast cancer, HRT is out.

However, we still have sex almost as frequently as before. We have sex three to four times a week. We had it a bit more before menopause but we have found ways to enjoy sex with each other that do not need penetration. Mutual masturbation and oral and always with some nice foreplay, we still enjoy each other.

I miss intercourse but my wife did not ask for this any more than I did but we make it work, and it’s usually fun! I hope some men will read this and decide there’s a way to stay happy with the woman of your youth.

*All names have been changed.

*I am not a medical professional and this piece is not intended as medical advice. Please consult your physician before starting any treatment for menopausal symptoms.

Haunting Photos Show The Real New Orleans, Through Hope And Despair

David Spielman’s New Orleans is solemn and still, a place where cat’s claw vines creep up walls and consume entire houses. A staircase leads to an empty lot where a building once stood; a piano sits outside on a sunny day, unplayed and sharing space with a pile of tires. The photographer captures scenes from around the city, and the lingering effects of Hurricane Katrina’s devastation are everywhere.

“I wanted to create a sense of what it was like and how it impacted everybody,” said Spielman, whose photographs are collected in the book The Katrina Decade: Images of an Altered Citywhich was released this summer. Some of the images are currently on display in an accompanying exhibition at the Historic New Orleans Collection.

Spielman set out to capture the overlooked areas of the city.

“One of the things that I think is very, very important, is, sadly, the media has kind of construed Katrina’s primary damage to the Lower 9th Ward,” he told The Huffington Post. “They fail to fully capture the fact that over 80 percent of the city of New Orleans was flooded.”

“Hopefully,” he added, “people will start to realize that Katrina was an equal and ecumenical destruction.”

The 10-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina won’t mark the end of Spielman’s efforts to depict a long and wide-ranging view of a changing New Orleans. He has been photographing his city for four decades and says he plans to continue “until the day before I die.”

“The event was the hurricane. The story was the aftermath,” Spielman said.

A few of Spielman’s photographs depict people, but his focus is mostly on the city’s architecture and “the battle between nature and the destruction.”

“Although there are no people in the pictures, you know when you look at those houses covered in vines, that was somebody’s home,” he said. “So when you think about these houses that have been around for well over 100 years, you think of the generations of people.”

The collection of black and white images (shot on film, with a Leica camera) is ambiguous, evading easy description. That’s partially intentional for Spielman, who contrasts his quiet scenes with some of the more dramatic portrayals of New Orleans after the storm hit.

In his book, Spielman quotes the photographer Robert Frank, one of his major influences. He recited the quote from memory in our phone interview: “Black and white are the colors of photography. To me they symbolize the alternatives of hope and despair to which mankind is forever subjected.”

Through the rich and numerous shades of gray in his photographs, Spielman captures a blend of that hope and despair: The storm has passed, but left an indelible mark on New Orleans.

Bill Maher Rips Today’s ‘Sharing Economy’ On ‘Real Time’

It’s probably safe to say you won’t see Bill Maher ride around in an Uber anytime soon. The comedian put the ride-finding app as well as others on blast on Friday, calling out America’s “sharing economy” on “Real Time.”

“Airbnb? You really think anybody really wants to have total strangers living in their apartment for a week? ‘Oh look, someone else’s pubes on my soap. I’m living the dream,'” Maher said.

One major problem with sharing apps is that some of them can put your personal information at risk, though Maher seemed more focused on the financial aspect. The comedian blames outrageous income inequality and greed for the rise in services he says are now replacing people with robots.

“The one thing we’re not sharing are the profits. Somehow they forgot to create an app for that,” he quipped.

The Real Donald: Excerpts From Trump’s Books On Women, Marriage, Sex And More

Before he jumped into the presidential race and the media frenzy that comes with it, real estate mogul Donald Trump preferred to communicate with the American people via a more intimate medium — the simple written word.

The Huffington Post has reviewed nearly a dozen books by and/or about Trump, including one by John O’Donnell, a former executive in Trump’s business empire, and one by Tim O’Brien, a longtime journalist and former HuffPost editor. Reading through these works, which go back a full 25 years, one gets a better sense of the businessman’s macho persona, his taste for extravagance, his views about women and his rise to the top of the New York City social scene. All quotes are Trump’s words except where noted otherwise.

On marriage

“A good marriage is like negotiating an important deal: You have to consider all the factors, thoughtfully and thoroughly. If you were investing a large part of yourself and your fortune into a venture, believe me, you’d make sure you thought about it for a long time first. That’s how I see marriage. It’s serious, and it’s important. I don’t approach it any more haphazardly than I do a very important deal. In fact, considering the amount of deals I’ve made compared to the number of marriages I’ve had, I’d say I’m quite cautious about marriage. You should be, too.” (Think Like A Billionaire, Donald Trump with Meredith McIver, 2005)

*

“For a man to be successful he needs support at home, just like my father had from my mother, not someone who is always griping and bitching. When a man has to endure a woman who is not supportive and complains constantly about his not being home enough or not being attentive enough, he will not be very successful unless he is unable to cut the cord.” (The Art of the Comeback, Donald Trump with Kate Bohner, 1997)

“If he doesn’t lose the ballbreaker, his career will go nowhere.” (The Art of the Comeback

On prenuptial agreements

“There are basically three types of women and reactions. One is the good woman who very much loves her future husband, solely for himself, but refuses to sign the agreement on principle. I fully understand this, but the man should take a pass anyway and find someone else.” (The Art of the Comeback)

On women

“I was always of the opinion that aggression, sex drive, and everything that goes along with it was on the man’s part of the table, not the woman’s. As I grew older and witnessed life firsthand from a front-row seat at the great clubs, social events, and parties of the world — I have seen just about everything — I began to realize that women are far stronger than men. Their sex drive makes us look like babies. Some women try to portray themselves as being of the weaker sex, but don’t believe it for a minute.” (The Art of the Comeback)

*

“I remember attending a magnificent dinner being given by one of the most admired people in the world. I was seated next to a lady of great social pedigree and wealth. Her husband was sitting on the other side of the table, and we were having a very nice but extremely straight conversation. All of a sudden I felt her hand on my knee, then on my leg. She started petting me in all different ways. I looked at her and asked, ‘Is everything alright?’ I didn’t want to make a scene in a ballroom full of five hundred VIPs. The amazing part about her was who she was — one of the biggest of the big. She then asked me to dance, and I accepted. While we were dancing she became very aggressive, and I said, ‘Look, we have a problem. Your husband is sitting at that table, and so is my wife.’

‘Donald,’ she said, ‘I don’t care. I just don’t care. I have to have you, and I have to have you now.’ I told her that I’d call her, but she had to stop the behavior immediately. She made me promise, and I did. When I called I just called to say hello, and that was the end of that. But the level of aggression was unbelievable.” (The Art of the Comeback)

*

“One woman, who was socially prominent, was getting married, and I had bumped into her on Fifth Avenue while she was exchanging wedding gifts. I had my limousine nearby, and she asked if I could give her a ride back to her apartment on Park Avenue. I said absolutely, not even suspecting that within five seconds after the door closed she would be jumping on top of me wanting to get screwed. I said, ‘You’re getting married next week, and I’m going to your wedding.’

‘I don’t really care,’ she said. ‘ I never liked him that much anyway, and you know that.’ I was really in a quandary, because she is a truly great-looking and sexy woman.” (The Art of the Comeback)

*

“Women have one of the great acts of all time. The smart ones act very feminine and needy, but inside they are real killers. The person who came up with the expression ‘the weaker sex’ was either very naive or had to be kidding. I have seen women manipulate men with just a twitch of their eye — or perhaps another body part.” (The Art of the Comeback)

*

“There’s nothing I love more than women, but they’re really a lot different than portrayed. They are far worse than men, far more aggressive, and boy, can they be smart.” (The Art of the Comeback)

*

“I don’t know why, but I seem to bring out either the best or worst in women.” (The Art of the Comeback)

*

“I love women. They’ve come into my life. They’ve gone out of my life. Even those who have exited somewhat ungracefully still have a place in my heart.” (The Art of the Comeback)

*

“She’s just a woman. She can’t take the business.” (As quoted in Trumped!, John R. O’Donnell with James Rutherford, 1991)

*

“I don’t need this, some woman crying. I need somebody strong in here to take care of this place.” (Trumped!)

*

“She is really something else. God, what a body she has!… She’s a beautiful girl. Just a beautiful girl. Fucking gorgeous. An incredible body, just an incredible body. The girl is so physically fit. Beautiful face. A beautiful, beautiful girl.” (Trumped!)

*

“It’s all about the hunt and once you get it, it loses some of its energy. I think competitive, successful men feel that way about women.” (As quoted in TrumpNation, Timothy L. O’Brien, 2005)

“Sam Jackson should have gotten the Oscar for [‘Pulp Fiction’], not Travolta,” Donald mused. “My favorite part is when Sam has his gun out in the diner and he tells the guy to tell his girlfriend to shut up: ‘Tell that bitch to be cool! Say: “Bitch be cool!”’ I love those lines.” (O’Brien, writing in TrumpNation)

*

“I think that putting a wife to work is a very dangerous thing. There was a great softness to Ivana, and she still has that softness, but during this period of time, she became an executive, not a wife… You know, I don’t want to sound too much like a chauvinist, but when I come home and dinner’s not ready, I’ll go through the roof, okay?” (TrumpNation)

*

“You know, it really doesn’t matter what they write as long as you’ve got a young and beautiful piece of ass.” (TrumpNation)

On beauty pageants

“Nobody cares about the talent. There’s only one talent you care about, and that’s the look talent. You don’t give a shit if a girl can play a violin like the greatest violinist in the world. You want to know what does she look like.” (TrumpNation

On publicity

“Publicity is important because it creates interest in my hotels, residential buildings, and other projects. But sometimes it gets out of hand, and my every move is scrutinized by the press to the point of absurdity… The Trump Organization is in some ways like the Disney Company: Image means a great deal to me. If people don’t associate my name with quality and success, I’ve got serious problems.” (Surviving at the Top, Donald Trump with Charles Leerhsen, 1990)

On his youth

“I was especially carefree. I had a comfortable little studio apartment on Third Avenue in the city, and I maintained a lifestyle that was fairly commonplace then but that now, in an age when people are worried about dying from sex, is hard even to imagine. I didn’t drink or take drugs, as far as stimulants go, I’ve yet to have my first cup of coffee. But I was out four or five nights a week, usually with a different woman each time, and I was enjoying myself immensely.

Wild things happened all the time back then, and nobody thought very much of it. For instance, one day a friend called me at the office and said he needed to set up a date for a certain well-known married woman. This woman was visiting from out of town and was, he said — using a typical swinging-seventies expression — ‘really hot.’

I had a girlfriend at that time, and so did he, but I knew a guy named Ben who was very worldly-wise. Ben, I was sure, could serve as this woman’s escort and be discreet about it… She turned out to be the wife of a man who was then the prime minister of a major country. I’d heard stories about this lady, but I never thought much of them until that night. We met at the house of the friend who’d phoned me. After we’d all chatted for a while in the living room, the four of us who already knew each other drifted out to the kitchen, leaving Ben and Madame X in the living room to get better acquainted. Which they did. In fact, when we drifted back in, about ten minutes later, she and Ben were involved in an incredibly torrid scene on the couch. I remember standing there and thinking to myself, ‘Well, Donald, you’re not in Queens anymore.'” (Surviving at the Top)

On Michael Jackson’s sex life

“Somehow, Michael feels comfortable with me. I asked him how he was doing, and we started talking about his life, including his sex life. I was somewhat surprised when Michael told me he had a new girlfriend. I congratulated him and asked, ‘Who is it?’ He was very shy and looked down into his napkin, then put the napkin over his face and said, ‘Trump, Trump, I don’t want to talk about it, I’m so embarrassed.’ I chided him. ‘Come on, Michael,’ I said, ‘tell me who your new girlfriend is.’ When he finally looked up, he said that it was a girl named Lisa Marie.” (The Art of the Comeback)

On onerous litigation

“Litigation in the United States has gotten totally out of control. It has actually become an accepted business practice for people to use the court’s time, money, and energy in order to effect deals, break up deals, and receive money unjustly. I know people who virtually can’t function without starting a lawsuit, thinking that this will give them the upper hand in even the most simple of negotiations. Politicians ought to be ashamed of themselves for perpetuating this ridiculous situation. Court systems have become backlogged for years with superfluous cases.” (The Art of the Comeback)

On germaphobia

“I happen to be a clean-hands freak. I feel much better after I thoroughly wash my hands, which I do as often as possible. Recent medical reports have come out saying that colds and various other ailments are spread through the act of shaking hands. I have no doubt about this.

Almost nothing bothers me more than sitting down for dinner at a beautiful restaurant and having a man you’ve just seen leaving the men’s room, perhaps not even having washed his hands, spot you and run over to your table with a warm and friendly face, hand outstretched. You have a decision to make. Do you shake this total stranger’s hand, or do you insult him by saying that you would rather not? I have done both, and nothing works. If you shake his hand, you then get up to rewash your hands and inevitably somebody else comes over to you to shake hands. If you don’t shake his hand, he walks away with a long face, totally insulted, and bemoans for the rest of his life how that bastard Donald Trump would not shake his hand.” (The Art of the Comeback)

On his fear of AIDS

“It was painfully obvious how ill at ease he was in public situations. In part, I think it was really beyond his control. He was preoccupied by a fear of communicable disease, especially AIDS. Sometimes he’d joke about it, but he went so far as to warn a high-ranking Trump’s Castle publicist to avoid the Jacuzzi in the luxury health spa there because he considered it a potential breeding ground for the deadly virus.” (O’Donnell, writing in Trumped!)

*

“What went on in Studio 54 will never, ever happen again. First of all, you didn’t have AIDS. You didn’t have the problems you have now. I saw things happening there that to this day I have never seen again. I would watch supermodels getting screwed, well-known supermodels getting screwed on a bench in the middle of the room. There were seven of them and each one was getting screwed by a different guy. This was in the middle of the room. Stuff that couldn’t happen today because of problems of death.” (TrumpNation)

On his “tremendous fear of baldness”

“For Donald, image and reality were always in conflict. The Windsor knot in his tie was always pulled tight to his throat. At the same time, he let his sand-colored hair dip down to his eyes and curl over his ears and collar, and he plastered it on the sides with a greasy gel that he believed fostered hair growth. He had a tremendous fear of baldness. He swept his hair across the front of his head like a man trying to hide a thinning patch. He once observed to Mark that he considered baldness a sign of weakness. He gave a tube of the gel he used to Mark, warning him, ‘The worst thing a man can do is go bald. Never let yourself go bald,’ as if nature could be circumvented through sheer force of will.” (O’Donnell, writing in Trumped!)

On boxer Mike Tyson

“Tyson sat down in Donald’s corner office hundreds of feet above Fifth Avenue and the two men chatted for about fifteen minutes before the boxer got to the point. Donald recalled their conversation in detail.

‘Mr. Trump, could I ask you a question?’ Tyson asked.

‘Whatever you want, Mike,’ Donald responded.

‘Are you fucking my wife?’

‘What?’

‘Are you fucking my wife? Everyone’s telling me that you’re fucking my wife.’

Tyson then pulled out a copy of a Vogue magazine that featured a picture of Ms. [Robin] Givens wearing a Trump Princess hat from Donald’s yacht.

‘Everyone’s telling me that you’re fucking my wife and I think you’re fucking my wife,’ Tyson said.

‘Mike, let me tell you something: I never ever even thought about it. And I heard those rumors and they’re disgusting. In fact, I called you a couple of times to tell you that I heard those rumors and it pisses me off. And I never, ever even thought about it. She’s your wife, she’s with you, she’s loyal to you, and it’s total bullshit.’” (O’Brien, writing in TrumpNation)

On dealing with setbacks

“Finally, the ceiling was installed. One Saturday, Donald went up to have a look, accompanied by Steve, some of our hotel executives and a group of contractors. Donald looked up at the ceiling as if it was the first time he had seen it; then he looked at Steve. ‘What the fuck is this?’ he said. ‘Who said to make this ceiling so low?’

‘You knew about this, Donald,’ Steve replied. ‘We talked about it, if you remember, and the plans –‘

Suddenly Donald leaped up and punched his fist through the tile. Then he turned on Steve in a rage. ‘You cocksucker! Motherfucker! Where the fuck were you? Where was your fucking head?'” (O’Donnell, writing in Trumped!)

*

“’Where’s my wife? Get Ivana down here,’ he said. When she arrived, Donald turned on her fiercely. ‘How could you close one of my tables on the busiest fucking night of the year!’ he shouted. ‘I can’t believe you could be so stupid. Do you know how much money I’m losing here? Stupid! You’re costing me a fortune! This is the stupidest fucking thing I’ve ever seen!’” (O’Donnell, writing in Trumped!)

18 Real Things Donald Trump Has Actually Said About Women

Donald Trump claims to “cherish” women, but his actions — and words — suggest otherwise.

Fox News’ Megyn Kelly called him out on his sexist behavior during the GOP debate on August 6, reminding him: “You have called women you don’t like ‘fat pigs’, ‘dogs’, ‘slobs’, and ‘disgusting animals.”

Trump laughed off the question, claiming he doesn’t “have the time for total political correctness.” Later, Trump called Kelly a “bimbo” and said that he “didn’t recognize” the remarks she was referencing.

Well, we recognize them.

Trump has consistently insulted, belittled, sexualized and stereotyped women. He has also taken the time to personally insult individual notable women like Sarah Jessica Parker, Rosie O’Donnell, Cher, Bette Midler, and others.

Here are 18 of the most outrageous things Trump has said about women:

Coolest Dad Ever Gets Cochlear Implant Tattoo To Match His Daughter’s Real One

One father found a rad way to stand by his daughter.

Alistair Campbell‘s 6-year-old daughter, Charlotte, is deaf and recently got a cochlear implant for her right ear, the New Zealand Herald reported. But right before the 6-year-old from Taupo, New Zealand, received the device — her second — Campbell decided to get one as well in a show of solidarity. His, however, came in the form of a tattoo on his head.

(Story continues below.)

On Monday, the dedicated dad posted photos of himself sporting his new tattoo on social media — one of which included Charlotte alongside him with her implant for her left ear in plain view. The moving photo generated buzz across the Internet and was picked up by various media outlets.

It’s not difficult to understand why.

“I shared the photos with my friends and family to see, I never expected this huge response,” Campbell told The Huffington Post. “I’m pleased I have helped to raise awareness for all cochlear implantees.”

Charlotte received her first implant back when she was 4 years old. The tattoo, Campbell says, is all about honoring his beloved daughter through the challenges she’s faced.

“Charlotte’s journey has been quite a hard journey for her and for us,” the father told Stuff.co.nz. “The tattoo was a tribute — this was all about her, not me.”

The tattoo took about 45 minutes to complete, according to Buzzfeed News. As for the pain, Campbell said it was nothing he couldn’t handle. He’ll be letting his hair grow back, but is planning to shave it off, revealing the tattoo for special occasions or when his daughter requests to see it, the New Zealand Herald reported.

The dad told HuffPost that while his daughter doesn’t quite understand the tattoo as of yet, she will come to appreciate its significance as she gets older.

Campbell’s support for his daughter doesn’t stop there.

In December, he’ll participate in a charity boxing event to raise money for Hear 4 Kidz Trust, a group that supports kids with hearing loss in Taupo.

Jon Stewart Proves Ridiculous Interviews Over The Years Were Real

Clear your schedule. You’re going to need a lot more than one moment of zen after this.

Jon Stewart says that a big question “The Daily Show” gets asked is, “Are the interviews they do real?” The show constantly seems to have ridiculous people who share polarizing views like denouncing the notion that President Obama is the Antichrist only because he is, in fact, the second coming of Hitler. You know, stuff like that.

Surely, these can’t be serious, right?

Well, unfortunately …

Image: Tumblr

In order to prove the show didn’t distort peoples’ views, Stewart had Jessica Williams take a camera crew to contact past interviewees. And it looks like they’re still as ridiculous as ever.

The good news is at least person doesn’t think the president is the second coming of Hitler anymore. Now, he thinks he’s the son of Satan — which is pretty much back to the Antichrist theory again. So at least it’s nice everything is coming full circle.

Jon Stewart’s final “Daily Show” as host will air Thursday night, Aug. 6 at 11:00 p.m. ET on Comedy Central.

Did TV’s Greg Brady Seriously Date His TV Mom in Real Life?

When it originally aired from 1969-1974, the television series The Brady Bunch, about a man with three sons marrying a woman with three daughters, was far from a major success. It never finished in the Top 30 in the Nielsen ratings and was never nominated for any notable critical awards. It was popular enough, though, to make it through five seasons, which was notable in that it gave the show enough episodes (117) to meet the then-minimum threshold for successful syndication (for years, 100 episodes was the figure series generally had to hit to be successful in syndication. Nowadays it is 88 episodes). It was while in syndication and airing daily on stations all over the country that the show became a cultural sensation, and there have been numerous sequels and remakes of the series ever since.

The seemingly perfect Bradys have become cultural icons and as such, any possible salaciousness involving the Bradys is latched on to with glee. Hence, the legend that Barry Williams, who played eldest son Greg Brady, dated Florence Henderson, who played his TV mother, Carol Brady.

Terrified of Your Necklaces? Jewelry Phobia Is a Real Thing

Loud statement jewelry isn’t everyone’s thing, but an actual fear of necklaces, earrings, and the like? C’mon man—you’ve got to be kidding, right? Turns out the struggle is real, with a small group of people experiencing a true phobia known as kosmemophobia.

thick-gold-chain-necklace-street-style

The most noticeable victim is NASCAR’s Dale Earnhardt Jr., who talked to ESPN about the issue while discussing his recent engagement.

“Jewelry grosses me out; it just freaks me out. I don’t really like being around it,” he explained. “Everyone thought I was making it up as some excuse not to get married, [but] it just kind of grosses me out, always has. It’s one of those things. Some people it’s snakes or spiders or whatever, but for me it’s jewelry.”

Crazy, right? He said he told his now-fiancee that she could wear her wedding ring every day once they got married but that fans will notice she doesn’t wear much jewelry otherwise (as “a favor” to him).

The condition isn’t very widespread—there’s not a lot of official scientific work published on it, but there is a Facebook page for fellow phobes. The page has collected a little over 200 likes, and a perusal of comments shows people from all over expressing gratitude at having found others like them. Last month, a commenter named Tammy wrote “I have always had this phobia and only just recently looked it up and found out that I am not the only one!” (the moderator responded to say that most other group members also had similar experiences, of feeling alone and getting tired of being on the receiving end of confusion or skepticism).

A thoughtful LiveJournal entry from someone who experiences jewelry-fear explains that certain pieces rank differently in the scale of repulsion (for the writer, earrings are a “minor annoyance” and necklaces are the worst).

I can’t stand to look at you, much less touch you, and I will be uncomfortable being anywhere near you. I will avoid you, even in dialogue, until you go away. Even feeling your breath would likely urge me to go wash my face. Roughly half the time I visit a bathroom, which would be frequently enough without this, is for the purpose to simply wash myself, and that is often due to a kosmemophobic reaction.

If you’re getting shades of OCD, it could be because some think the two are linked. A post on some of the world’s most famous people with OCD included Nikola Tesla, the inventor who inspired the naming of Elon Musk’s car company. Tesla was said to have a fear of round objects, particularly women’s jewelry, and avoided shaking hands upon introductions. Interesting, huh?

Another rare phobia? An intense fear of cheese.

Now get to know Iris Apfel, a woman certainly does not have a fear of jewelry:

Yes, ‘Love Weight’ Is A Real Thing

If you find yourself gaining weight once you’re in a relationship, you’re not alone. A recent study that compared the body mass indexes of singles to spouses found that, on average, coupled people had higher BMIs than people who were single.

Scientists from across Europe analyzed data from over 10,000 people in Austria, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Spain and the U.K. They found that while the average single man had a BMI of 25.7, the average married man had a BMI of 26.3. The average single lady had a BMI of 25.1, while the average married woman had a BMI of 25.6.

For reference, a BMI of 25 or higher is considered overweight; a BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese.

The study doesn’t explain why there are weight differences between married and single people, but lead author Jutta Matta of the University of Basel said that her findings did support what scientists called the “Marriage Market Hypothesis.” That is, once you’ve found a mate and are “off the market,” there’s less incentive for you to invest in your looks by keeping your weight down. For instance, said Matta, in countries with high divorce rates, married people have lower BMIs than married people in countries with a low divorce rate. Perhaps this is because those who live in a high-divorce culture understand that there’s a higher chance they’ll return to the “marriage market.”

Counterintuitively, marrieds reported buying more organic and fair trade food, as well as more local and unprocessed food, compared to singles. That means they were probably eating healthier meals or at least eating more consciously than singles, but the better diet didn’t translate into healthier weight, on average.

Part of it may have to do with the fact that husbands reported doing less exercise than single men, Matta said. It could also be because marrieds, on average, said that they paid less attention to the amount of fat in their food as well as their own body weights.

Previous research, most notably a smaller 2013 study, found that the happier a couple was, the more weight spouses gained in the first years of their marriage.

A few extra pounds doesn’t mean there’s anything unhealthy about marriage. Quite the opposite, in fact: a large body of evidence supports the conclusion that marriage is linked to many health benefits (which makes the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on gay marriage all the more exciting). Happily married people are more likely to live longer, have overall better health, have stronger bones and are less likely to have heart attacks.

Matta advises couples who struggle with their weight to take advantage of the fact that they have someone with whom they can share resources and goals. In most instances, married couples have more resources than single people, which they can use toward a shared goal of healthier habits, she concluded.

Are Critics The Real Dinosaurs In Jurassic World?

I have to admit it – I read critics. The last thing I want to do is take one of my rare evenings off and spend it in a three-hour movie experience that disappoints. So before I decide to commit my time and money to a film, I read what is written, I look at the Tomatometer, and I try and make an informed judgment.

And that’s why Jurassic World may be the end of an era for critical film reviewers.

This story begins in the week before the Dino-Blockbuster was to hit theaters.

Reviewers – who get special early access to preview screenings – had their pencils sharpened. And the reviews were, to put it kindly – brutal.

The New York Times’ Manohla Dargis wrote: “There’s more flab than muscle packed on this galumphing franchise reboot, which, as it lumbers from scene to scene, reminds you of what a great action god Steven Spielberg is. Too bad he didn’t take the reins on this.”

Wall Street Journal’s Joe Morgenstern “Mr. Pratt’s charm is no match for the crude filmmaking or the stupid plot that keeps him running around in a constant state of artificial animation.”

The Washington Post’s Ann Hornaday wrote: “The most enjoyable moments of an otherwise oddly joyless film actually belong to Jake Johnson and Lauren Lapkus, who steal the show in an especially amusing scene during a panicked evacuation.”

“It’s fun enough while it lasts, but somehow, finally, all too much and not enough. The problem isn’t that dinosaurs have ceased to impress us, but that dinosaurs alone are not enough to sustain us,” said Scott Foundas writing in Variety.

As I read the reviews my heart sank. I loved Jurassic Park, and certainly the Hollywood machine was counting on that. But how could Steven Spielberg allow his reputation and legacy to be tarnished so?

The decision was made for me. I wasn’t going to be robbed of my cash, my time, or my fond memories of dinosaurs just so the Hollywood machine could cash in my nostalgic chips.

The critics it seemed were angry at the product placements for BMW, the sexist storyline of Claire Dearing.

Said Marlow Stern in The Daily Beast: “Jurassic World is not good. In fact, it’s aggressively bad.” (LINK)

Says Marlow: Claire Dearing is the park operations manager. “Claire is so careerist, unfeeling, and apparently ‘unmaternal’ that she clacks her heels around barking orders in bangs and a white pantsuit, and when her two young nephews arrive on the scene, she’s so buried in her work mobile that she shoos them away.”

That did it for me, sexist, and overly commercial. I had given up – no DinoDollars would be clawed from my wallet.

Then, with a painful 59 out of 100 on metacritic – the film opened.

And as Scott Mendelson reported here Forbes, the numbers told a very different story.

Thursday Previews: $ 18.8 million. Totally unexpected, and a clue that all the critic’s negative reviews wouldn’t scare away early fans. Friday’s opening day numbers of $ 63.1 million where strong, making it the top Friday gross of all time. By Saturday ticket sales of $ 69.4 million and Sunday with $ 57.2 million made Jurassic World the top Saturday and Sunday grosses of all time. What matters here is that even after the critics slams, early audience came out happy, and shared their feelings on social media. On RottenTomatoes the gap is clear, audiences giving it an 84% thumbs up, while Top Critics have it just 61%.

Monday’s box office of $ 25.3 million and Tuesday’s $ 24.3 million showed continued strong box office as positive world of mouth grew.

In the end Jurassic World had a $ 296.21m seven day total – making it the highest seven day box office of all times.

So, what did I do in all this?

I read all the reviews, and after the Times biting criticism – I decided to take the risk and go anyway, fully expecting to be disappointed at the crass commercialism and sexist storytelling.

And then – I wasn’t. At all. I liked it. It was fun. The dinbansources were big and fierce. The action and popcorn no more (or less) than I was expecting. The product placements no worse than any one big summer action film. James Bond had a BMW logo in it – as well as Heineken Beer.

I came out entertained, and a bit concerned that the Critics may have made a critical mistake. They thought they were going to see a “film” when audiences understood implicitly that they were going to see a movie. A romp. A 90 minute journey into an escapist land of absurdities that didn’t need to make any political points or illuminate any world issues.

OK, sure – the storytelling was a bit soft, and there were some odd bits of editorial where it seemed like some logical links had been left on the cutting room floor. (Example: where did those matches come from?)

But what audiences understood, and the critics forgot, is that the expectations for a summer popcorn blockbuster are pretty simple. Take me to a fun place, don’t make me think too hard, and then bring me back to earth when the ride stops. Jurassic World did that -and did it well.

Is it high art? Nope. Is it Spielberg at his best? Surly not. But that wasn’t ever promised.

So the question here is – how did audiences ignore the scathing critical reviews and shell out $ 300 million. And what does that mean in terms of the value and role of critics going forward. Does social media and instant audience feedback make them obsolete?

It may be – like an evil scientist in the jaws of a Velociraptor – they are toast.

‘Tanorexia’ Is Real and I Lived to Tell About It

I remember the day so vividly. It was the summer after my junior year of college and I was working at a summer camp in Michigan.

I called my parents in Florida just to say “Hi” and let them know how camp was going, when my mom got very serious and said, “We got the biopsy results back from the Dermatologist. You have Melanoma.”

I was in complete shock. Who gets skin cancer at 19 years old?!

Flashback to Pre-Diagnosis

The week before leaving for camp that summer, I was in the kitchen getting a snack, wearing my colorful striped bikini (which I practically lived in), and my mom pointed out that I had a large dark mole on my back. I didn’t think much of it because I had freckles and moles all over my body…what’s another one? But, she insisted that I get it looked at because the color was “odd.”

I’m actually really surprised I took her advice because I hate going to doctors and I was a kid who thought she was invincible. But, I went to the dermatologist, had a biopsy done on the “odd looking mole” on my back and didn’t think a thing of it until I got the news a week later.

After the initial shock wore off, I was scared. I knew cancer was serious and I knew Melanoma was bad. I had just lost an aunt and grandmother from cancer and it sickened me at the thought that I had the nasty disease in my body that had taken their lives.

The worst part about the situation was that it was my own fault.

I can’t say that I did anything to protect myself from Melanoma. In fact, I did the opposite.

My Tanning Addiction

I grew up loving the outdoors and being in the sun. As a kid, it was just about having fun. As a teenager, it became more about vanity. I had always been known as the “tan girl” and I thought I looked prettier and skinnier when I was tan. With Indian skin, sandy blonde hair, light eyes, and skin that browned easily, I wanted nothing more than to stay tan all year.

Living in Florida made it easy. I practically lived outside in our family pool or at the beach with friends. Instead of sunscreen, I used baby oil to get my skin even darker. I liked the way tanning made me look and feel.

2015-06-24-1435119174-2109898-tanorexia.jpg

Facing Melanoma

When I returned from camp a few weeks after my Melanoma diagnosis, I went in for surgery to have the cancer removed. I was terrified, but I remember acting like it was no big deal because I knew my parents were even more terrified than I was. I didn’t want them to be scared.

After the surgery was successful at removing all the Melanoma, I was left with a large scar across my back. As a 19-year old girl I was self-conscious about the scar, but not enough to keep me from jumping right back into my bathing suit and heading for the beach a few weeks later.

You’d think that after my diagnosis I would immediately change all my tanning habits, but it didn’t happen that way.

Even though I was more aware of my fragile skin, I still wanted to be tan. I would see all my friends getting tan and I would be jealous. I would lay out in my backyard just to try to “stay in the game” and get a little color.

The only difference between pre-melanoma Lindsey and post-melanoma Lindsey was that I would put sunscreen on occasionally, but really only on what I thought were the fragile parts of my body, like my face, chest, and shoulders. Never once did I put sunscreen on my legs because I was determined to have year-round tan legs as always.

This behavior went on for several years. Then one day I heard something on the radio that struck a nerve.

They were discussing something called “tanorexia.”

“Tanorexia” means that you are addicted to tanning. And it’s not a joke. “Tanorexics” are literally addicted to ultraviolet (UV) rays.

Studies have shown that frequent UV exposure produces endorphins, or the pleasure chemical in the brain. The same chemical that is produced after heroin use.

When frequent tanners are given endorphin blockers, they have been shown to experience withdrawal symptoms similar to what is experienced during drug addiction recovery, including nausea, vomiting, and shaking.

The term “tanorexic” started as a laugh in 2000 when writer David Sedaris was describing his extremely tan sister in his memoir Me Talk Pretty One Day. Now “tanorexia” is becoming more commonly used, and it is no laughing matter. Come to find out that 70 percent of “tanorexics” are Caucasian women between the ages of 16 and 49.

That was me. I was a “tanorexic.”

It wasn’t until after my second, third, fourth biopsy that I began to understand the consequences of my behaviors. I was putting my life at risk.

2015-06-24-1435119107-2330738-skincancerbiospy.jpg

I can’t say that a lightbulb came on and I changed all my tanning ways. It took effort to stop tanning, and it still does at times. I will see pictures of myself when I was tan and wish I looked that way again.

One way I believe I cope with my tanning addiction is by turning to exercise. Not only does exercise make me feel better about my body (which tanning did for me previously), but exercise gives me that (healthy) endorphin rush that I was so addicted to with tanning. It has been a coping mechanism for me as I continue to recover from my tanning addiction.

I have also drastically changed my lifestyle. I don’t live in Florida anymore and am not tempted daily by the beaches and hot sun. But, you won’t find me hiding inside. I still love the outdoors and make every attempt to enjoy the outdoors daily, but I do so with skin protection.

As more research is being done about tanning addiction, more evidence is showing that it is likely a behavioral addiction, much like gambling. Tanning addiction may not be as severe as drug addiction, but there is a lot of debate about whether to include it in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) as a true behavioral addiction.

I have lived and survived through “tanorexia” and I know it to be real.

I think that the beauty trend of “having a tan glow” is pushing people towards unhealthy tanning practices that can lead to “tanorexia.” Instead, we should be promoting healthy beauty standards of naturally fair skin and help save lives. One way to do this is by educating people on the dangers of tanning and by promoting the use of sunscreen, as well as other methods of protecting our skin from harmful UV rays.

I was lucky enough to survive Melanoma this time, but many people do not survive. One person dies of Melanoma every hour. Don’t let that be you.

3 Uncommon Ways to Maintain Your Real Focus

2015-06-05-1433514790-4550924-AlmaArtePhotography.jpgPerfectly healthy young people have been taking themselves to doctors, worried that their forgetfulness is a sign of Alzheimer’s, according to a report last month about doctors in Australia who are studying the phenomenon. But for most of us, growing forgetfulness is little more than a natural reaction to information overload.

Our brains are simply not wired to process the vast amount of information and choices we are exposed to these days–and the impossible effort to do so can lead to indecisiveness, bad decisions and stress, according to Lucy Jo Palladino, Ph.D., a psychologist and author of Find Your Focus Zone.

Information overload can also tempt us to tune out or simply slide across the surface of life — like a water strider on a pond, robbed of the pleasure of a place to land. So what genuinely helps people navigate this Information Age (which, perhaps not coincidentally, has also been called the Age of Anxiety?)

There are lots of suggestions out there in publications such as, Fast Company, Forbes and Aeon. Many discuss the dangers of email and multitasking and the value of daydreaming, taking breaks, going for walks, writing things down, and doing the most important things first. Daniel Goleman also recently wrote about the topic in Focus: The Hidden Driver of Excellence, in which he explores the benefits of mindfulness meditation, focused preparation and recovery, positive emotions and connections, and mental “prosthetics.”

As someone who has an insatiable desire to know and do everything, I’ve also come to find three insights particularly helpful. Rather than concrete actions, they serve more as mindsets or perspectives to take on all that is available to us now — and stay centered on what truly matters to us as individuals.

What’s new is not (necessarily) important. In a recent interview on Krista Tippett’s podcast, On Being, Maria Popova, the creator of Brain Pickings, observed that the way information comes to us today via the Internet constantly reinforces the idea that what is new is what is important and valuable. But this, of course, is not true. Much of what is delivered up as new is neither important nor valuable. To the contrary, it can be a great distraction from what is meaningful — which is often old, timeless, contained in books, in music, in art, and in the hearts and souls of human beings who need only the expanse of quiet, leisure, stillness, and each other to bring their wisdom to life. Put another way: It helps to remember that trying to keep up with what is new is not necessarily what’s most likely to make you happy, healthy, or successful.

Sensitivity to other people’s expectations can spin you in circles. Being overly influenced by other people’s expectations can make us vulnerable to being reactive instead of deliberate; and those of us who are sensitive to other people’s expectations need to figure out how to manage that. When I was growing up, for example, my father on more than one occasion became furious at me for reading a book rather than volunteering to help around the house. While he clearly did not remember what it was like to be a kid or enjoy himself, his reaction had an impact on me. And to this day, I need to remind myself to be conscious of my motivations before I act so I do not unconsciously relinquish the reins of my life to the helter-skelter whims of others.

Focusing on what makes you feel like you is the best guide there is. Like most writers, I have spent a lot of time living a dual existence: “professional” by day, and “writer” by any early or late hour I have to myself. I am fortunate that I am adept at my professional work, I enjoy it, and I find it meaningful. But when I think it is me, instead of what I do, I tend to lose my focus–and, often, lots of things start to go wrong. But when I am know that I am a writer first–because that is where I feel most fully me–I make smarter decisions, my energy flows more smoothly, and things tend to go better in my working life, my writing life, and my personal life. I can look at the information that comes my way and not feel overly reactive and spun about by distractions because I am acting from what I can only describe as the core of my being.

In short, it comes down to those familiar words: Know yourself — and then trust yourself. It is as simple and remarkable as that.

Sources connected to the reality show tell the website that while it’s possible she may come back for a cameo, or a few appearances, she won’t be a full-time cast member.

Request for comment made to Richards’ rep and Bravo have yet to be returned at this time.

The 50-year-old, who has been a cast member on the reality series since it first premiered in 2010, returned to rehab on Tuesday after briefly leaving a treatment facility to attend her daughter’s wedding in Mexico.

9 Sex and the City Fashion Things That Would Never Fly in Real Life

While the Glamour staff loves Sex and the City as much as the next girl, we’re constantly chatting about characters’ outfits that made us want to throw the remote (like bra tops and hot pants on a cold fall day). Carrie and crew had some of TV’s best fashion moments, but that still won’t stop the ever-growing list of things that, though fantastic, were totally unrealistic. Nine things we’ve come up with so far:

04-rom-com-halloween-costumes-sex-and-the-city

#1. Small clutches working as everyday bags.
Take a look at the majority of all the ladies’ outfits (there are some priceless Carrie looks here and here) and you’ll notice that, more often than not, everyone’s got tiny clutches tucked under their arms. For most women, the petite size makes an appearance on nights out or at formal events since it’s only really suitable where you don’t need more than a credit card and cell phone. For day-to-day life? Please. Where’s the extra space for snacks, gym clothes, and reading material?

#2. Heels 24/7.
The entire world knows Carrie and the gals love heels, but still…there’s some practicality to consider (especially in New York City). A gorgeous stiletto definitely has its moment, but so do ballet flats, espadrilles, and comfy sneakers. In real life, they would slip on something easier every now and then, especially if the day involved skipping from uptown to down for meetings, shopping trips, and drinks with friends.

#3. A normal salary supporting that shopping habit.
Sure, if Carrie were a high-level investment banker or the CEO of some mega corporation, she could shop like crazy. But as a newspaper columnist? The ability to live alone in a spacious apartment on a tree-lined block, constantly shop for pricey shoes, and wear a designer wardrobe would never happen—even if she had access to all the sample sales in the world.

#4. Miranda’s lawyer clothes.
Viewers got it: Miranda was the serious one with a high-powered job. Still, she spent half the series in boxy suits with bad cuts and, let’s be real: if you had three BFFs who were as into style as her pals, you know someone would have given her some tough love and dragged her to Bloomingdale’s.

#5. Keeping clothes forever.
You know the glorious montage in the movie in which the girls judge as Carrie whips through the history of her closet, trying on all sorts of outfits? It was cute to watch but so not realistic. With the rise of resale and the physical introduction of new purchases, a girl’s forced to weed out stuff every now and then (and not in just one fell swoop).

#6. All the tummy action.
Crop tops are cool now, but back in SATC‘s heyday? Not as much. Between Carrie and Samantha, there was no shortage of midriff-flashing outfits, which, honestly, would have stuck out like a sore thumb.

#7. Absolutely no weather-appropriate shoes whatsoever.
No one ever acknowledged rain much more than opening an umbrella (or holding a newspaper over her head). Where are the wellies or, at the least, simple flats you wouldn’t mind tossing if they were destroyed? For a woman who loved her shoes as much as Carrie, she for sure would have been into taking better care of them. This doubles for snow boots for all four.

#8. Or cold-weather-ready coats.
Throughout all the show’s seasons, a cold winter would have definitely had to strike New York City, meaning the girls should have bundled up a lot more than anyone ever did. Carrie’s beloved fur makes frequent appearances, but paired with bare legs and flimsy dresses (and all the women were guilty of this). Fashion’s awesome, but sometimes a girl needs a long down coat.

#9. The lack of cross-pollination.
In real life, few women fit a style category quite as neatly as Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda did. It’s a storytelling conceit, but let’s be real: If four women spent as much time hanging together as they did, everyone would wind up picking and choosing from one another’s styles, inspired to try and mix it up a little.

Looking for ‘The Real Thing’? Find Someone Comfortable

Ask him for a date, or let him pursue you? Respond to the text immediately, or let her wait? Tell him you love him, or stay mum until he says it first?

The early days of a relationship are thrilling, but also stressful. That heavenly new-love high can feel pretty precarious, as if one false move could unravel the whole thing.

So, you plot and plan and strategize — discussing every move with a panel of your 12 closest friends. In some ways, that’s part of the fun, but a new book by Washington Post reporter Ellen McCarthy says it’s probably a waste of time.

McCarthy was the Post’s wedding reporter for four years — a gig she landed on the very day she and a former boyfriend broke up. McCarthy thought that covering weddings while heartbroken would be torture, but she discovered that it actually inspired her.

“All of these people — young, rich, poor, plain, beautiful, sophisticated, and simple — they’d all found someone. I was reminded again and again that love happens every day, in all kind of ways, to all kinds of people,” she writes in her terrific new book, The Real Thing: Lessons on Love and Life from a Wedding Reporter’s Notebook.

By investigating real relationships rather than the ones in rom-coms or dating guides, she discovered that a lot of conventional wisdom about romance didn’t jibe with her fieldwork.

For example, we all love a good origin story, those tales of lovers whom fate brought together through snowstorms or missed trains. But McCarthy says that people who meet in less goosebump-inspiring ways, like online dating, are just as likely to have high-quality relationships.

“All of the couples who got together with a little help from technology feel the same sense of fate as couples who met while serving in the Peace Corps mission or while sharing a wall as next-door neighbors,” writes McCarthy, who estimates that 35 to 40 percent of the couples who apply to be featured in her column met online.

McCarthy also discovered that the happiest relationships didn’t require obedience to antiquated dating maxims:

One of the things I’ve heard over and over again from couples describing what was different when they met ‘the One’ was that for the first time, they didn’t feel like they were in the middle of a romantic chess match. There was no guessing whether or not the other person was interested. They didn’t worry about ‘the rules’ on how long to wait before calling or setting up the next date. The whole thing felt relaxed and transparent, not fraught with the typical ‘Does he or she like me?’ anxiety.

In fact, McCarthy often stumped college classes when she asked them to guess the most common word she heard when couples described their relationships. It wasn’t “love,” “laughter” or “chemistry” — it was “comfortable,” a word 70 to 80 percent of her couples used.

The students thought this sounded like a drag, but I think it’s great news. “Comfortable” doesn’t mean you aren’t also counting down the seconds until you can see your beloved again. It just means that when you find the right fit, you probably won’t have to stress about the precise wording of your latest text — or spend much time decoding his or hers. If he says he’s going to be late because he got stuck in a meeting at work, that means he’s going to be late because he got stuck in a meeting at work.

In other words, winning someone’s heart doesn’t require employing a lot of complicated schemes. You’re more likely to find lifelong love by listening to your instincts and sticking with what works. That might be bad news for those who earn their living peddling strategies and tricks, but it’s great news for everyone else.

A Real Live Country Song

A Real Live Country Song

A Real Live Country Song” was written in November 1987, inspired by a song that Mike Johnson had written in October of that year, which was in turn inspired by some barroom tales by some of his drinking buddies. The story is told in the first person by young Kyle Richards who lives in the little town of Travis Texas, just west of Houston. He starts out with a glimpse of life with his rather congenial family, his desire to travel the country on his Harley-Davidson Sportster, and one day record country songs in a Nashville studio with his father. After a holiday fishing trip with his Deputy Sheriff father went south because of trouble at the Houston County Jail, Kyle decides to throw in some extra hours at Clancy’s General store, where he works as a delivery boy. The morning starts out routinely, deliveries, drooling over Jan, Clancy’s daughter and store manager, and washing the pickup truck. While taking a soda break on the front porch a glimmer of light bouncing off the highway catches his attention. Soon a figure wearing a cowboy hat tops the last of the rolling grades before it levels out and passes the store, and it becomes apparent to Kyle that the person is wearing mirror sunglasses. The cowboy is trying to thumb a ride and eventually works his way into Clancy’s lot and plops down on the stairs. Kyle silently sizes him up and slowly works up the nerve to engage him. Intrigued by the strange paw print design on the cowboy’s tote bag and guitar’s headstock, as well as the fine looking guitar, Kyle eases in by seeing if the cowboy was thirsty and hungry. A casual conversation about the paw print, the cowboy’s guitar and their own music choices slowly melts the ice and soon the cowboy is singing some of their favorite country songs. With each passing song vignettes of the traveler’s experiences unfold, leading Kyle to suspect that maybe this cowboy isn’t so ordinary after all. The Real Reason Your Sandals Are Hurting Your Feet

Sandals should be so comfortable you can live in them all summer, but we’ve all been subject to the pinching, squeezing, and blistering from the wrong pair.

New brand Eight Fifteen (from the people behind Seychelles) is out to solve the summer conundrum. For the debut line, the designers worked with insole company Ortholite to utilize techniques previously used only in athletic shoes. Here, Eight Fifteen design director Gabriel Morales and president Sari Ratsula weigh in on shopping for comfortable and chic sandals.

Here’s What to Look for in a Comfortable Pair of Sandals:

The Footbed: When it comes to maximizing comfort, look for a rounded insole and a footbed that’s no higher than 22 millimeters whether it’s a flat, heel, or wedge (the conversion works out to being a touch under an inch). “It’s the most comfortable height for long-term walking and standing,” Ratsula said. “Flat sandals seem so comfortable, but most of them are too flat and hard to wear for long. Make sure the outsole is thick enough to support your feet.”

Strap Placement: Thin straps across the top of the foot should be affixed to the sole in between the knuckle of the big toe and the area where the big toe curves in. “A wider strap will go behind the big-toe knuckle and angle slightly further back when moving across the top of the foot,” Morales advised.

Strap Type: Multistrap sandals are having a moment, but not all are straps are created equal. “Straps that are too skinny or tubular are often a reason for pain,” Morales said, suggesting that you skip heavy embellishments with stones, sequins, or rhinestones. Your best bet is a flat, natural leather strap that’s no smaller than a quarter of an inch.

The Ankle Rule: The final factor the pair ID’ed as being crucial for comfort is an adjustable ankle strap. “Ultimately any sandal should have 3 millimeters of space between strap and skin. The foot needs a little play room to avoid cutting off circulation, but you don’t want it so loose that the skin gets rubbed.”

An Adult’s Preposterous, Laughable, No Good, Very Real Day

Have you read the amazing children’s book Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst? If not, you should. Here’s my parody of the original, from an adult’s point of view:

I went to bed with my $ 750 night guard in my mouth and now it’s lost in my room, and when I woke up this morning my kids were cranky (“Out of my room!”) and starving (“Cereal, stat!”) and we were out of milk, and by mistake I got black mascara all over my hands and then wiped them on my white, silk shirt. I could tell it was going to be a preposterous, laughable, no good, very real day.

On the subway, one guy was twitching and another was talking to himself, two people were making out in a way that should be reserved for a private place, a woman put her hairy armpit in my face and I swear I saw another woman’s pubes poking through her pants. I looked around for someone, anyone, normal, and I found him! I tried to make eye contact in a way that said, “At least we have each other” but then he started twitching and doing weird things with his mouth and something wet dripped on my head. I think I’ll move to Canyon Ranch.

During a break at work, I checked in with Facebook and saw links to secondary drowning and how to recognize a stroke, stories about spouses dying, children getting electrocuted and mass shootings. I am paralyzed with fear. I can’t leave the building because I might get run over by a car on the sidewalk, but I can’t stay in the building because someone might come in and shoot all of us. My anxiety is making me anxious. I really need to go to Canyon Ranch. It was going to be a preposterous, laughable, no good, very real day.

At lunch, my colleague, Jim, got a turkey sandwich with American cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and coleslaw on a roll, with a chocolate milkshake to wash it down, and another colleague, Tom, got pizza, a large coke, and garlic knots. I had mixed greens with sprouts and a bottle of water. Can’t seem to shed the last 10 pounds of baby weight.

Just as I was settling back into work, my daughter’s school called to tell me that she had puked and that I had to pick her up immediately. It took an hour to get 40 blocks. The puke was all over her brand new shoes and jacket and when I hugged her, the smell was so bad that I threw up a little in my mouth, and then swallowed it. When I dropped my daughter off at home, I noticed that my sitter didn’t look so great. She probably has Ebola. It was a preposterous, laughable, no good, very real day.

Back at the office, my computer was down. Tech support advised me to try restarting it. Maybe I could work for tech support. While my computer was rebooting, I looked over my “to do” list (all 47 items and growing by the second). I have to fill out camp forms for the kids, go on a diet, refill prescriptions, grocery shop, find a group to join (I’m not vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free or raw foods only, so I don’t know where I fit in), get highlights, make photo albums of the kids before they leave for college, register the kids for Fall activities, order food for my son’s birthday party, call a friend, replace the light bulbs, learn to cook, start a blog, call the cable company, teach my son to read, send thank you notes and go to the gym. I took a break from the gym for 15 years. I advise against that. This is the kind of preposterous, laughable, no good, very real day that makes me want to scream, “Screw this, I’m moving to Canyon Ranch!” But who would care?

I knew it was going to be a preposterous, laughable, no good, very real day because I forgot my best friend’s birthday, even though I had reminders in my phone, in Microsoft Outlook and in my written calendar. Yeah, I still keep a written calendar, so what? My friend said she didn’t care that I forgot her birthday but now I bet she’s going to get back at me by “forgetting” my birthday, and then I won’t even have the right to be mad at her. I also pissed off this “cool” woman who I do charity work with, you know the type: she’s really loud because she has nothing intelligent or interesting to say, and you don’t really like or respect her but you have to pretend to and pretend really well or else you’ll have to stand by yourself at the all of the fundraisers. I hope she moves to Canyon Ranch.

I ran into my brother and his colleagues on the way home from work and he specifically reminded me not to ask his boss about his wife, since they’re going through a divorce. I’m usually good at remembering these kinds of things but all the guys looked exactly the same and I forgot which one was his boss and asked about his wife. After an awkward silence my brother told me not to call him anymore.

It was a preposterous, laughable, no good, very real day.

I made kale and quinoa for dinner even though I hate kale and quinoa. There was no hot water in the shower, my toothpaste was hard, my necklace fell down the drain and I’d already seen the episode of House Hunters that I was counting on to soothe me to sleep. I was out of Ambien, the AC still wasn’t turned on (it’s May!), and my sitter called in sick for tomorrow. You know, because she has Ebola.

It was a preposterous, laughable, no good, very real day.

My shrink says some days are like that. Even at Canyon Ranch.

Killer Mike Calls Bill O’Reilly ‘Full Of S***’ On ‘Real Time With Bill Maher’

Killer Mike appeared on “Real Time with Bill Maher” Friday night and was very candid about his opinion of Bill O’Reilly.

“I like Bill O’Reilly as a character,” the Run the Jewels rapper said, prompting the host to laugh. “I hate how white people take him so seriously,” Mike continued. “He’s more full of shit than an outhouse.”

The rapper stuck by his belief that O’Reilly puts up a “fictitious” facade. But Maher disagreed slightly, saying that the political commentator’s temperament was no act. O’Reilly “may be full of shit,” Maher said, “but it’s sincere shit.”

The two then discussed O’Reilly’s claim that rap music is responsible for the decline of religion in America. Mike’s response was pure laughter.

In Friday’s episode Maher also brought up America’s obsession with British accents and discussed the criticism of first lady Michelle Obama’s speech at Tuskegee University with panelists Killer Mike, John Waters, Heather McGhee and Charles Murray.

Bill Maher Says 4/20 Should Be A National Holiday On ‘Real Time’

Bill Maher wants stoner holiday 4/20 to be officially recognized.

On HBO’s “Real Time With Bill Maher” Friday night, the host announced that he’d created a Change.org petition calling on Congress to make April 20 a national weed-related holiday. He then showed his panelists how he likes to celebrate the day with a reading of “‘Twas the Night Before 4/20,” a riff on the famous poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas.”

“Twas the night before 4/20 and all through the crib,” read Maher, “not a creature was stirring, not even — did you hear something? Is the door locked?”

“I was wearing a T-shirt and shorts from the gym,” he continued. “I had just settled down to watch Adult Swim.”

To see Maher’s actual petition, head over to Change.org.
