Eric Dickerson says Hall of Famers “with names” may boycott Hall of Fame festivities

The NFL's annual Canton kickoff is coming, with the league holding several days of events in and around a museum that will add eight more bronze busts — and that will rely on current members of the club to break out their yellow jackets and return to the cradle of pro football. Last September, Dickerson sent a letter to Commissioner Roger Goodell, NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith, and Hall of Fame president David Baker demanding lifetime health insurance, an annual salary for Hall of Famers, and a share of league revenue. The effort quickly crumbled, fueled by dynamic from the fact that some Hall of Famers didn't know their names were placed on the letter to Dickerson's demand that the Hall of Famers should get $ 300,000 per year to backing away from that claim to taking issue with 31-year-old news reports that Dickerson had crossed the picket line in 1987.

Ewan McGregor Says It Was ‘Daunting’ To Play Jesus

Scottish actor Ewan McGregor has played many beloved roles, but his latest may be the most iconic yet.

In “Last Days in the Desert,” a new film by Colombian director Rodrigo Garcia, McGregor takes on the monumental task of portraying both Jesus Christ and his nemesis, Lucifer — arguably two of the most well-known figures of Western religion.

Actors can usually tell within the first few pages of a script whether it’s going to be a good fit for them, McGregor said in a recent interview with The Huffington Post. When he began reading the script for “Last Days in the Desert,” he recognized the challenge and signed on right away.

The film, which hits theaters on May 13, opens with austerity. A “holy man” roams the desert carrying little more than a jug of water. He sleeps, walks, drinks, and gazes questioningly into the distance.

Several scenes later, when Lucifer reveals himself to Jesus in the holy man’s own form, the action begins.

“When [the script] arrived I had no idea what it was about,” McGregor said. “Nobody speaks for first three or four pages.”

Eventually, McGregor said he realized who this “holy man” was and that he was being invited to play a character who actors have been trying to capture on the big screen for decades. “I was totally hooked in,” he told HuffPost.

In the Christian gospel, Jesus goes into the Judean Desert to fast and pray for 40 days after being baptized by John. During this time, Satan tempts Jesus in a series of three conversations, but Jesus resists his wiles. Garcia’s film fleshes out this narrative by introducing an imagined chapter of Jesus’s time in the desert.

We encounter Jesus, who is referred to by his Hebrew name Yeshua in the film, toward the end of his 40 days when he happens upon a family in the wilderness. He becomes enmeshed in their lives for several days, hoping to remedy the internal conflicts between father, mother and son. All the while Lucifer baits him, trying to distract him from his path.

Despite his excitement to play the roles of Yeshua and Lucifer, McGregor said it was intimidating to play the son of God.

“It’s daunting to be approaching a piece of work where you’re playing Jesus Christ, very daunting. It took up most of my thoughts in terms of the two characters.”

McGregor said he focused more of his preparatory work on the Jesus character, reading everything about the founding figure of Christianity that he could get his hands on.

“Many of the most recent books were trying to disprove the ‘son of God’ nature of his life and were writing more about who he might actually have been. [But] I was portraying Jesus who is the son of God,” McGregor said.

Christian theology presents Jesus as equal parts human and divine, which can present challenges to filmmakers.

“I have no idea how you write God,” Garcia said on a recent call with reporters. “So I focused on the human side.” The human side of Jesus would undoubtedly be tired, hungry, and insecure after 40 days of fasting, the director said. And that’s the Jesus he tried to depict.

“We were showing the human side to him, exploring the human side of a young rabbi who is aware of the path that’s been set in front of him,” McGregor said.

“When I started thinking about those real human qualities about communicating with his father… I found him there. I found a truth to those sides of his character. [But] I was always mindful of that fact that I was playing Jesus whose father is God.”

The theological implications of the film were not lost on McGregor or Garcia, though neither says he is particularly religious. At a recent screening of the film at a church in Los Angeles, the church’s reverend said that the character of Jesus had altered his feelings about the gospel. McGregor’s Jesus is empathetic, frustrated and often confused — not the infallible godhead we might imagine him to be.

When HuffPost relayed the reverend’s sentiments to McGregor, the actor let out a deep exhale and said he understood the responsibility that came with playing Jesus.

“You can’t approach something like that without being a little freaked out by the nature of it,” McGregor said. While he didn’t set out to satisfy everyone else’s expectations for the role, the actor said he tried to do justice to Christian theology.

“I’m very proud that people are responding to the Yeshua in this story in a way that makes them feel that it’s the Jesus they recognize from their own imaginings of him,” he told HuffPost. “That I’m very proud of.”

Your Spouse’s Unhealthy Habits Could Be Making You Fat, Study Says

(Reuters Health) – Need another reason to blame weight gain on your marriage? When one spouse becomes obese, the other’s risk of obesity almost doubles, a U.S. study suggests.

“Normal weight people whose spouses went from being normal weight to obese were more likely to become obese,” said Laura Cobb, who led the study as a researcher at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

“This suggests that changes in one spouse are likely to also be reflected in the other spouse, likely because of similar changes in diet, physical activity or other behaviors that impact obesity,” Cobb said by email.

Plenty of research already links marriage and weight gain, and scientists have firmly established the connection between obesity and heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers.

What the current study adds is a fresh take on how couples may gain weight in tandem, insight that might help shape more effective obesity prevention and treatment efforts targeting couples, Cobb and colleagues note in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

Researchers followed almost 4,000 couples for up to 25 years, starting between 1987 and 1989. After an initial exam, they had three follow-up visits roughly three years apart, followed by a fifth exam between 2011 and 2013.

At the start of the study, 23 percent of the men and 25 percent of the women were obese.

Non-obese men whose wives became obese between visits in the study were 78 percent more likely to become obese during that period than they would have been had their wives not gained so much weight, the study found.

Having a husband become obese was linked to an 89 percent increased risk of developing obesity for their wives.

Not many people who started out obese lost enough weight to be considered no longer obese, but when they did, their spouse was also more likely to become non-obese.

Shortcomings of the study include the long stretch of time that elapsed between the fourth and fifth exams and the large proportion of people who died or left the study before the final visit, the authors acknowledge.

It’s not unusual for married couples to forge common habits over time that influence their weight, said Ivanka Prichard, a weight loss researcher at Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia.

“Over time, similarities in diet, particularly any unhealthy aspects, may lead to weight changes,” Prichard, who wasn’t involved in the study, said by email. “There are also a range of pressures in life that could impact this such as having children, work, shared health knowledge, time or finances.”

Like unhealthy habits, though, positive lifestyle choices can also be contagious in a marriage, said Debra Umberson, director of the Population Research Center at the University of Texas at Austin.

“When married people get in shape or lose weight, it’s often because one spouse takes the lead and urges the other spouse along,” Umberson, who wasn’t involved in the study, said by email. “Even if the person not taking the lead is resistant, over time they will probably be influenced by the kinds of food and activities their spouse is involved with – especially if the person taking the lead is the one who purchases groceries or prepares meals.”

A New Survey Says Women Spend More Time Shopping Than Socializing

shoe-shopping-stocksy

There’s part of shopping that’s all about necessity—we all need household basics and food to eat after all. How much time do you think you spend browsing and buying? And, perhaps more interestingly, how much time do you think you spend on it compared to time you do other things? Like, hang with your ladies for a glass of wine and a spot of gossip?

Statistic Brain Research Institute has just broken down the average day in an effort to understand what takes up the majority of our time. Not surprisingly, sleep and work claim the biggest amount of hours (for the ladies, we’re averaging 8.76 hours of sleep and 6.66 of work per day; men work a little more and sleep a little less).

The number we didn’t see coming? Women shop more than socialize, logging 1.3 hours a day versus .73 hours of hang-time (even when you add in time spent on the phone or emailing, it’s still less). It seems a little surprising, but here’s the million-dollar question: what about when you’re shopping with a friend? Does that count as socializing?

WSJ Columnist Says She Has Proof Latino Voters Actually Like Donald Trump

Although a Gallup poll released this week shows that Donald Trump is far and away the most disliked Republican presidential candidate among Latino voters, one conservative columnist says she may have found signs to the contrary, courtesy of some anecdotal evidence.

In her column on Thursday, The Wall Street Journal’s Peggy Noonan cited a conversation with a Dominican friend to explain why she thinks Trump’s “staying power in the polls reflects a change in the electorate.”

Something is going on, some tectonic plates are moving in interesting ways. My friend Cesar works the deli counter at my neighborhood grocery store. He is Dominican, an immigrant, early 50s, and listens most mornings to a local Hispanic radio station, La Mega, on 97.9 FM. Their morning show is the popular “El Vacilón de la Mañana,” and after the first GOP debate, Cesar told me, they opened the lines to call-ins, asking listeners (mostly Puerto Rican, Dominican, Mexican) for their impressions. More than half called in to say they were for Mr. Trump. Their praise, Cesar told me a few weeks ago, dumbfounded the hosts. I later spoke to one of them, who identified himself as D.J. New Era. He backed Cesar’s story. “We were very surprised,” at the Trump support, he said. Why? “It’s a Latin-based market!”

There you have it, folks.

Tituss Burgess Says ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ Season 2 Will Top ‘Pinot Noir’

Little is known about the second season of “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” but Tituss Burgess gave fans every reason to have high hopes in a HuffPost Live conversation on Monday.

“We find out about Tituss’ wedding, and his wife. Why he left, how he left, which is really funny,” he explained to host Karamo Brown.

But it’s Burgess’ character’s “one-man show” that will leave audiences in stitches, he warned.

“It’s hilarious,” the Emmy-nominated actor affirmed. “I think it is more absurd than ‘Pinot Noir.'”

While originally worried about the show achieving another performance with “the same energetic, atmospheric, nonsensical feel” as “Pinot Noir,” Burgess said all doubts melted away during a table read of the scene with Tina Fey, the show’s creator.

“As I was reading it, I looked up at Tina,” he recalled through laughter. “She was like, ‘Just keep on going!'”

Fans can also look forward to more celebrity cameos, though Burgess wasn’t at liberty to say who.

“It is as littered with guest-stars who are brilliant and offer up zany parts of their personality just the way that Season 1 did,” he said.

Watch more from Tituss Burgess’ conversation with HuffPost Live here.

What Every Successful Person Knows, But Never Says

Ira Glass is the host and executive producer of the popular National Public Radio show, This American Life.

Each week, This American Life is broadcast to more than 1.7 million listeners across 500 different radio stations. For Glass, who is featured in almost every episode, the show has led to a wide range of opportunities including book deals, feature films, and appearances on popular television shows.

Of course, it wasn’t always that way.

What Every Successful Person Knows, But Never Says

Glass started out at NPR as a 19-year-old intern. The next decade was filled with a lot of hard work and very little payoff as he worked as a reporter.

Fifteen years into his career, Glass finally began co-hosting his first show, which was called The Wild Room. The show was his idea, but Glass would later describe it by saying “one show would be horrible and two shows would be decent.” The Wild Room aired during a particularly unpopular Friday evening slot and in Glass’ words “it deserved its time slot.”

After struggling through two years of The Wild Room, Glass finally pitched the idea for This American Life and received meager funding to get it started. Over 15 years and millions of listeners later, the rest is history.

But here’s the part that I find really interesting.

Check out how Ira Glass describes his long struggle to create something noteworthy:

From Ira Glass:

Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, and I really wish somebody had told this to me.

All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But it’s like there is this gap. For the first couple years that you’re making stuff, what you’re making isn’t so good. It’s not that great. It’s trying to be good, it has ambition to be good, but it’s not that good.

But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is good enough that you can tell that what you’re making is kind of a disappointment to you. A lot of people never get past that phase. They quit.

Everybody I know who does interesting, creative work they went through years where they had really good taste and they could tell that what they were making wasn’t as good as they wanted it to be. They knew it fell short. Everybody goes through that.

And if you are just starting out or if you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Do a huge volume of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week or every month you know you’re going to finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you’re going to catch up and close that gap. And the work you’re making will be as good as your ambitions.

I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It takes awhile. It’s gonna take you a while. It’s normal to take a while. You just have to fight your way through that.
–Ira Glass

If you’d like to hear Glass say it himself, listen to the audio clip below.

The Thing That Got You Into The Game

We all have reasons for being pulled to the things we love.

When he was just a 19-year-old intern, Ira Glass had a taste for journalism and storytelling. He knew what good journalism looked like when it was done well. But it took him 17 years of work before he could start to do it well himself. And, as he says above, that was frustrating.

I think you and I face a similar type of battle.

  • Spend a year or two in the gym and you’ll start to recognize good technique, even if your own could use some work. This is something I’m struggling with right now. I know a great clean and jerk when I see one, but when I grab hold of the bar it’s still hard for me to pull it off.
  • Start writing consistently and you’ll begin to take notice when you read great work. But good luck trying to produce your own brilliant words. In the beginning, it can be difficult just to get something on the page. And even when you can hammer out sentences, young writers quickly learn that all words aren’t created equal. Even with consistent writing each week, I still feel like I fail to produce something of note.
  • Watch a dozen TED Talks and you’ll be able to point out what you like and don’t like about certain presenters, but jump up on stage yourself and the difficulty of captivating an audience — even for a minute or two — becomes quite apparent.

And so it goes for virtually any skill. There is always a gap between being an apprentice and being a craftsman. The apprentice has the taste, but not the skill. The craftsman has the taste and the skill.

It’s easier to recognize beauty than it is to create it. You’re good enough to know that what you’re doing isn’t good, but not good enough to produce something great. When you find yourself in this frustrating limbo, the challenge is to never forget what got you there in the first place. Remember that thing that got you into the game.

Your love. Your passion. Your taste. That’s the reason you’re here. You still belong, even if you don’t feel like it right now. Your taste can be killer even if your ability is questionable.

Commit to the process and you’ll become good enough, soon enough. Put in a volume of work. Close the gap.

What to Do Next

Developing skills that are as good as your taste comes down to habits. The ability to “fight your way through” as Glass says, hinges on your consistency to show up and do the work. Can you build the habits required to make small improvements day after day?

I don’t claim to have all the answers, but my hope is that I can help a little bit. I’ve spent the last year writing and researching the science of habit formation. Much of what I have learned (including strategies for becoming more consistent and improving your performance) is covered in my free 46-page guide called Transform Your Habits. John Oliver Says It’s Time To End Discrimination Against Gays

John Oliver says it’s time for the federal government to finish the job when it comes to gay rights

Speaking on HBO’s “Last Week Tonight” on Sunday, Oliver pointed out that while gay couples now have the right to get married, they don’t have many other rights in much of the nation.

In some cases, they have no rights at all.

Now Oliver is calling on the feds to extend basic civil rights protections to the gay community.

“States have a checkered history when it comes to civil rights,” Oliver said. “Just look at Arkansas right now. Not only do they not have any anti-discrimination ordinances, earlier this year they actually passed an anti-anti-discrimination ordinance that prevents any city or county from extending civil rights protections to gay people.”

As Oliver pointed out, that’s the opposite of progress.

“It would be like if Apple suddenly introduced the iPhone 7 and it was a flip phone,” he said. “That’s still not as dumb as the Apple Watch… but it’s dumb.”

Check it out in the clip above.

What the Way You Put On Your Bra Says About You

Think back to this morning when you were getting dressed—how did you hook your bra? According to the pros, there are four unique ways to put one on, and each reveals something about the wearer.

“There are four distinct personality types—drivers, influencers, supporters, and careful correctors—who tend to have very unique ways of doing things, even small tasks,” human behavior expert, Patti Wood told Redbook, suggesting that even something as seemingly mundane as putting on our underwear can betray who we really are.

woman-fastening-bra-strap

Your bra clasp style: You fasten your bra from the back while it’s on
Your personality type: Supporter

You’re responsible, generous and like traditions and rules. Relationships are important to you, so you’re often the one who gathers your pals together for dinner or drinks and get called up frequently if friends need a pep talk.

Your bra clasp style: You hook your bra in the front of your body and then rotate it 180 degrees to the back.
Your personality type: Influencer

You’re a positive social butterfly who loves being around others. A serious chatty Cathy at times, you’re characteristically optimistic, persuasive, and frequently led by your emotions.

Your bra clasp style: You like bras with front closures.
Your personality type: Driver

This easy-to-see snap appeals to you because proficiency might as well be your middle name. You focus on an end goal, work as quickly as possible to get there, and don’t shy away from conflict.

Your bra clasp style: Your bra is never unhooked—you get it on by pulling over your head
Your personality type: Careful Corrector

There’s rarely a time when you’re not mulling something over. You’re a thinker and don’t speak without first considering your words. Also extremely organized, this personality type loves figuring out solutions to problems.

John Leguizamo Says High School History Makes Latino Students Feel ‘Invisible’

Latino contributions to U.S. history remain largely absent from high school history books, and John Leguizamo is doing something about it.

The 51-year-old actor and comedian sat down with HuffPost Live’s Alyona Minkovski Tuesday to discuss his upcoming film “American Ultra” and his upcoming comedy project “Latin History for Dummies.”

Over the years, Leguizamo has had success with autobiographical one-man shows like “Freak” and “Ghetto Klown,” in which he details his life experiences as a Latino growing up in the U.S. These projects, he told HuffPost Live, arose partly because he felt Latinos were underrepresented in the media.

“It was like, I’m watching TV and I’m watching movies and listening to radio and we’re invisible,” Leguizamo said. “I was like, where are all the Latin people that I hang out with and goof with all day and talk about politics and talk about art?… So I started writing my own stuff, I wanted to see my people the way I saw them.”

On the topic of Latino visibility, the comedian showed particular concern for the absence of Latinos in U.S. history education — despite research that shows Latino students exposed to ethnic studies perform better in school.

“Just imagine, you’re a white kid and all of a sudden everybody’s Latin and everything they’re teaching you is Latin and you don’t hear anything about yourself or about your contributions,” Leguizamo said. “You don’t know hear about George Washington, you don’t hear about Thomas Jefferson and you feel like you haven’t contributed anything. How would you feel? How would you think of your future? How would you think of your participation in American culture?”

“You feel like an invisible person screaming in the woods and nobody hears you,” he added. “And it’s really weird and unfair because we had huge contributions.”

Watch Leguizamo discuss Latino contributions to U.S. history above. And watch the full segment below to hear the actor’s thought on who is to blame for the lack of Latinos in film.

Bill Hudson Fires Back At Kids Oliver And Kate Hudson, Says They’re ‘Dead’ To Him

Bill Hudson, the estranged father of actors Oliver and Kate Hudson, is firing back after his son’s scathing Instagram post with a seething message of his own.

“I had five birth children but I now consider myself a father of three. I no longer recognize Oliver and Kate as my own,” Hudson said in an interview with The Daily Mail.

“I would ask them to stop using the Hudson name,” he continued. “They are no longer a part of my life. Oliver’s Instagram post was a malicious, vicious, premeditated attack. He is dead to me now. As is Kate. I am mourning their loss even though they are still walking this earth.”

The comments come in response to an Instagram post by Oliver Hudson that went viral. The photo, reportedly taken more than 30 years ago, featured the actor and his sister as kids with Bill, and was posted with the caption, “Happy abandonment day… @katehudson.”

Hudson also slammed his ex-wife Goldie Hawn, who he says “poisoned” the kids against him, and expressed dismay at his daughter Kate’s Father’s Day post, which was a picture of her with Kurt Russell, Hawn’s longtime partner. The caption on the post read, “Pa, just simply….. Thank you Happy Fathers Day I love you to the moon and back.”

“It was an intimate shot and, as her father, I found it inappropriate and unsettling,” Hudson said. “I’ll leave it at that.”

Kate Moss’s Daughter, Lila, Says She Does Not Want to Become a Model

Kate Moss‘ younger sister Lottie might have entered the modeling world, but the supermodel has another mini-me who’s not keen on the catwalk: her daughter with magazine editor Jefferson Hack, 12-year-old Lila Grace.

kate-moss-daughter-lila-grace

The tween opened herself up to Internet questions via her since disabled ask.fm page, resulting in an admission that just like everyone else and their mom, sometimes Moss embarrasses her. Thanks to an ask about what she envisions for her future, the world knows that while Lila might like to become a designer, she has no aspirations of super-dom (“mayb a fashion designer idrk but defo not a model” (sic)). For a favorite designer, she named Stella McCartney.

Kate’s daughter certainly has time to change her mind, but hearing that it’s a profession that holds little interest is seriously surprising. With the children of ’90s superstars coming of age right about now, we’ve seen an entire wave of genetically blessed offspring rise up and say they want to model (like gorgeous daughters belonging to Cindy Crawford and Sylvester Stallone, respectively).

‘Dancing With The Stars’ Alum Cheryl Burke Says She Never Mastered This Dance Move

Even after 18 seasons with “Dancing With The Stars,” professional ballroom dancer Cheryl Burke says there’s one dance move she hasn’t quite mastered yet.

In an interview with HuffPost Live on Wednesday, Burke revealed that for the upcoming finale episode of “I Can Do That,” she was tasked with performing signature choreography from the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders, pushing her flexibility to the limit.

“Even as a dancer I can’t do the splits, and they’re famous for that drop split,” she told host Nancy Redd. “Yeah, my back is super flexible, but I’ve never been able to do a drop split. That was a lot of pain.”

Study Says This Could Be One Way To Prevent Unintended Pregnancies

By: Agata Blaszczak Boxe, LiveScience Contributing Writer
Published: 06/17/2015 04:39 PM EDT on LiveScience

Young women who talk with a doctor about long-term contraception may have fewer unintended pregnancies, a new study suggests.

Research has shown that intrauterine devices (IUDs) and progestin implants — which can prevent pregnancy for years after they are inserted — are more effective at preventing pregnancy than other, more widely used methods such as condoms or birth control pills. However, health providers tend to be less familiar with longer-term contraception, and do not routinely mention it when talking with patients, the researchers said.

Considering that about 50 percent of pregnancies in the U.S. are unintended, the researchers wanted to see whether training health providers on how to educate young women about IUDs and implants would affect the number of unintended pregnancies.

“There has been heavy reliance in the United States on the pill and condoms for young people,” study author Cynthia Harper, a professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at the University of California, San Francisco, said in a statement. But “it’s easy for people to forget to use these methods, which can lead to accidental pregnancies.”

In the study, the researchers looked at 40 Planned Parenthood health centers across the U.S. They randomly chose half of the centers to receive staff training on providing counseling for women and inserting IUDs and implants, while the other half of the staffs continued to provide contraceptive care in the same manner as before. [Birth Control Quiz: Test Your Contraception Knowledge]

In the clinics where the training program was implemented, 71 percent of the providers who received the training later reported that they talked about IUDs and implants with patients, compared with 39 percent of the providers in the comparison group. In the clinics that received the training, 28 percent of women ages 18 to 25 chose IUDs or implants during their visit, compared with 17 percent of women in the other group.

Moreover, the researchers found that at the clinics where the training was done, the rate of unintended pregnancies over the course of a year was 8 per 100 women seen at the clinic, compared with 15 unintended pregnancies per 100 women in the comparison group.

However, there was no effect of the training on pregnancy rates among the women who were seeking birth control counseling after an abortion, the researchers noted. The researchers said these women may have been discouraged by the cost of the long-term contraception devices.

Previous surveys have shown that 38 percent of physicians in the U.S. who talk with their patients about contraceptives offer IUDs to adolescents. About half (53 percent) offer IUDs to women who have not given birth, and 25 percent offer them right after a woman has had an abortion, even though the devices are safe to use after an abortion, the researchers said.

As for the effectiveness of IUDs and implants compared with other methods, research has shown that less than 1 percent of women who use an IUD or an implant get pregnant over the course of a year, while about 9 percent of women on the pill and 18 percent of women whose male partners use condoms will get pregnant.

There are certain benefits and side effects of using IUDs and implants, the researchers said. For example, women who smoke or have certain health conditions are advised against taking estrogen-containing combined contraceptive pills because of an increased risk of blood clots and stroke, and so for these women, IUDs and implants are better alternatives because the devices do not contain estrogen. Both IUDs and implants only contain progestin, whereas the copper IUD does not contain any hormones, Harper said.

The side effects of using both IUDs and implants may involve irregular menstrual bleeding, and in the case of the copper IUD, heavier menstrual bleeding, Harper told Live Science.

The new study was published today (June 16) in the journal The Lancet.

RBG Says Natalie Portman ‘Insisted’ On Female Director For Biopic

Natalie Portman reportedly refused to sign on to the upcoming Ruth Bader Ginsburg biopic until it had a female director.

Portman is set to play the Supreme Court justice in “On the Basis of Sex,” which will chronicle Ginsburg’s early days as a lawyer.

In conversation with California Supreme Court Justice Goodwin Liu at this year’s American Constitution Society convention on June 13, Ginsburg revealed that that Portman was adamant a women direct the movie, putting the project on pause.

“Natalie Portman came to talk to me about this, and we had a very good conversation,” Ginsburg said. “And one thing interesting that she insisted on, it held up the project for awhile. She said, ‘I want the director to be a woman. There are not enough women in this industry. There are many talented [women] out there.’ And now they do have a woman director.”

In May, it was reported that Marielle Heller, director of “The Diary of a Teenage Girl,” is currently in talks to direct the movie, though the director of the film has not been formally announced.

Beyond pushing for more women calling the shots, Portman discussed the need for more dynamic female narratives with Elle UK in 2013: “The fallacy in Hollywood is that if you’re making a ‘feminist’ story, the woman kicks ass and wins. That’s not feminist, that’s macho. A movie about a weak, vulnerable woman can be feminist if it shows a real person that we can empathize with.”

(Though we can all agree that Notorious R.B.G. totally kicks ass.)

Portman recently directed her first feature film, “A Tale of Love and Darkness,” which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

Snoop Dogg Says He Wants To Be Twitter’s Next CEO

At least one candidate has already stepped up to be Twitter’s new CEO.

Not long after Twitter announced that it’s current chief, Dick Costolo, will step down next month, rapper Snoop Dogg told the world — on Twitter, no less — he’s “ready to lead” the company. Yeah, yeah, we know he’s kidding. But let’s just enjoy this for a second.

Just minutes before Snoop posted his tweet, Twitter Chairman Jack Dorsey said in a conference call that the company had not yet retained a search firm to find Costolo’s replacement. Dorsey will serve as interim CEO until a more permanent boss steps in.

Last year, investor Peter Thiel criticized the company, saying it was mismanaged and there was “probably a lot of pot smoking going on there.”

Snoop might be a good match after all.

Khloe Kardashian Blasts Liposuction Rumors, Says ‘I Bust My Ass’ In The Gym Five Days A Week

If you follow Khloe Kardashian on Instagram, you know she spends a lot of time in the gym. The 30-year-old is seriously proud of all the hard work that has gone into her body transformation, which is why you can’t blame the woman for being sick and tired of rumors saying she cut corners to get her fab figure.

On Tuesday, Kardashian took to Twitter to blast haters spreading rumors that she’d gotten liposuction.

Back in February, Kardashian celebrated the emergence of what she called her “baby abs” and wrote about her ongoing relationship with the gym:

My fitness journey will be a life long journey. Fitness is not about being better than someone else. It’s about being better than you used to be. I’m not where I want to be and who knows if I ever will be,”she wrote. But I am healthier than ever and due to my consistent workouts, I am slowly seeing results. Hi baby abs !! I see you!!! I hope to meet your other ab friends soon (yes I’m talking to my muscles. I’ve never met most of them before).

Looking back at pictures of myself I didn’t realize at the time how unhealthy my lifestyle actually was. People love to call me the fat one but as weird as it sounds I still don’t think I would consider myself fat back then. Definitely overweight and unhealthy, yes. About two years ago I decided to turn to fitness as a form of therapy and as a stress reliever. I started slow and eventually I started working out 4 to 5 days a week. We all have to start somewhere and doing something is better than nothing at all. Start small so you don’t get discouraged and give up. Remember it is all about consistency. There are no quick fixes if you want long-term results. Working out is a huge part of my life now. I genuinely enjoy sweating out my frustrations and living a healthier life. My workouts are not all about vanity. They are about clarity for my mind and soul. We all have different journeys in life, make sure your journey is for you and you alone. Remember in the end the turtle won the race. Slow and steady. dedication and tenacity.

Amy Sherman-Palladino Says ‘Gilmore Girls’ Couldn’t Exist Today

“Gilmore Girls” creator Amy Sherman-Palladino says TV has changed so much in the past 15 years, the show simply couldn’t exist today.

“Today, you don’t sell ‘Gilmore Girls,’ nobody buys it,” Sherman-Palladino, the show’s co-creator, said on Saturday during her panel ahead of the “Gilmore Girls” reunion at ATX Television Festival. She argued that it was only because of the lack of bureaucratic obstacles from the Warner Bros. network that “Gilmore Girls” was able to flourish as it did when she first sold the idea for the show in 2000.

“It was a time when a network wasn’t looking for a cohesive brand,” she continued. “Their brand was about the individual voices of the show.”

Sherman-Palladino is an especially individual voice, to say the least. “I don’t like rules,” she quipped.

“They kind of just left us alone, which doesn’t happen anymore,” she said. “We kind of just ran wild like crazy meth kids around the Warner Brothers lot.”

One of the things she and her husband and co-creator, Dan Palladino, did with that freedom was to cast Milo Ventimiglia without even having a part for him. She thought he was “cute” and decided to sign him before someone else did, before ever thinking up the role of Jess.

That free rein, though, came to an end. Ultimately, Sherman-Palladino left before the final season, due to contract disputes as the WB switched over to become the CW.

“It’s always a bummer when you have to end things,” she said. “I had hoped there would be a call, like, ‘Hey, it’s the last episode, do you want to end it?’ But that didn’t happen.”

“It was a wonderful, golden time,” she added with a sigh. “But it ended.”

Diplo Says Selena Gomez’s Relationship With Zedd Is ‘Fake’

Rumors of a romance between Selena Gomez and Zedd have been swirling since earlier this year, and while neither the singer nor the DJ have confirmed their relationship, producer Diplo thinks it’s all a publicity stunt.

When Radio.com asked Diplo about his harsh Twitter comments on Zedd’s latest album, the American DJ and producer spoke freely about his German colleague, saying that Zedd’s rumored relationship with the 22-year-old is merely a marketing move:

I’m actually not enemies with Zedd by any means. I just think that he came from such a cool place, and now he’s been pegged as a money-maker for a major label to do EDM, which to me isn’t even a genre. But they’ve pegged him for that, they’ve marketed him, even the fake relationship with Selena Gomez, all the things to sell records took away from the music.

Gomez caused a stir in February after sharing an Instagram photo of herself embracing Zedd. She again fueled the fire after gushing about her rumored beau to Radio Disney, calling Zedd “very cute and funny.”

Diplo playfully teased Gomez when he tagged her in a Twitter photo of himself hugging Zedd, to which the “Love You Like A Love Song” singer had an equally playful response:

Around the same time, Gomez and Zedd released a new song together, “I Want You To Know.” Publicity stunt or perfect timing? Hmm.

Jessica Lange Says Comparisons To Caitlyn Jenner Are ‘So Wonderful’

Caitlyn Jenner, formerly known as Bruce Jenner, introduced herself to the world today in her Vanity Fair cover story. Soon after, Twitter flooded with praise for Jenner, including tweets of support from her family and celebrities. Jenner also broke President Obama’s Twitter record on Monday, gaining over one million followers within four hours of her first tweet.

After debuting on the cover of Vanity Fair in a photo shot by Annie Leibovitz, the Internet began saying that Jenner resembled other famous women. While some made comparisons to Geena Davis and Rene Russo, the general consensus was that Jenner looked a lot like Jessica Lange. The comparison even began trending on Twitter.

While The Daily Beast was interviewing Lange on Monday for an unrelated story, they asked the “American Horror Story” actress if she’d heard about the trending comparison. First, they gave Lange a quick explanation of what exactly “trending” meant — “Trending on Twitter because Caitlyn Jenner [is] on the cover,” Lange said. “You see, I don’t do any of this stuff, the Internet.”

Then Lange said she hadn’t yet seen the cover. “Oh, really?” she said in response to the comparison. “That’s so wonderful. Well, now I’m going to have to look for that picture.”

Judy Blume Says She Regrets Joining Glee Club That Excluded Black Students

NEW YORK (AP) — Judy Blume, whose novels helped millions of young people get through childhood, has some regrets about her own youth.

The 77-year-old writer says she had been in an “advanced” high school glee club in New Jersey that excluded blacks.

Blume was interviewed on stage Sunday by fellow author Jennifer Weiner at BookCon, the fan-based gathering held at the Jacob K. Javits Center in New York.

Blume says she apologized to classmates at a 40th anniversary reunion and remembers saying, “I felt guilty for all these years” about not speaking out.

Blume says she had mentioned the glee club while writing her new novel, “In The Unlikely Event,” inspired by three plane crashes in her native Elizabeth, New Jersey, in 1951-52, but removed the material because it didn’t fit the narrative.

Data Says: Thongs Are Out, Granny Panties Are In

granny-panties-underwear

There’s a sea change happening in the underwear drawers of young women across the country: thongs are being abandoned in favor of full-seated briefs. “Within millennial and Generation Y consumer groups, it’s considered cool to be wearing full-bottom underwear. Thongs have had their moment,” Bernadette Kissane, a Euromonitor apparel analyst, told the New York Times.

Market research firm NPD reports that sales of thongs have decreased seven percent over the last year, while briefs and boy shorts sales have grown by 17 percent. The increase can be credited in part to the growing array fuller-coverage options. Brands like Ten Undies are making the brief cool and fashionable again (and the reemergence of Calvin Klein’s retro styles is no happy accident).

calvin-klein-underwear-briefs

Whatever your underwear preference is, the best message to take from the increased underwear offerings is: ladies’ choice.

“The high-waisted and high-cut styles hark back to a time when different body shapes were in style. There is not one ‘ideal body,’ but a plethora of them,” model Myla Dalbesio told the Times.

Echoing the idea of variety was Mayan Toledano, one of the designers behind underwear brand Me and You. “There’s nothing wrong with wanting to be more traditionally sexy and wearing a thong. This is a step toward embracing more variety in what’s offered.”

Diddy Says African American Communities Are ‘Committing Genocide On Ourselves’

Sean “Diddy” Combs has been vocal about the #BlackLivesMatter movement in the past, taking the nation’s justice system to task for non-indictments in the deaths of unarmed black men.

In reaction to the recent death of a New York rapper, Combs implored the community to look within.

Following the fatal drive-by shooting of New York rapper Lionel “Chinx Drugz” Pickens on early Sunday morning (no suspects have been arrested, as the shooting is still under investigation), Diddy posted a message to 4.6 million followers. In it, the 45-year-old declares that in some instances, African Americans should take more accountability in ending the violence related to death of black men and women in America.

For the last couple of months we have experienced a lot of injustice and wrongdoings to a community. But there is a flip side. Yes #BLACKLIVESMATTER ! But no one will respect us if we as a people don’t have any respect for our own black lives. We are committing genocide on ourselves. We are always looking for scapegoats . We as a people hurt ourselves more than anyone has ever hurt us. That makes no sense. We as a people including myself have to take accountability and do whatever we can do individually or together to stop the madness and realize that we are KINGS and QUEENS AND Must love ourselves and each other. I know I’m rambling a little bit. #BLACKLIVESMATTER SO AS A PEOPLE LETS PRACTICE WHAT WE PREACH.!!! MAY GOD BLESS US ALL! Ii LOVE YOU!!!!!!

A video posted by Sean Diddy Combs (@iamdiddy) on

“We are committing genocide on ourselves. We are always looking for scapegoats,” he wrote on the social media platform. “We as a people hurt ourselves more than anyone has ever hurt us. That makes no sense. We as a people including myself have to take accountability and do whatever we can do individually or together to stop the madness and realize that we are kings and queens and must love ourselves and each other.”

Combs’ has also spoken out on the grand jury decision in the Eric Garner case, and the aftermath in Baltimore following the death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray. He referenced these events, and their impact on the community, earlier this month during an interview with The Associated Press.

“The black community are the forgotten ones — just like people are in poverty all over this country, but especially the black community,” he said. “So you have a lot of built-up frustration especially in the kids that see their future is bleak and they are being forgotten. People need to pay attention to that…”

L.A. Reid Says It’s Not ‘Realistic’ For Mariah Carey To Make Another Number One Hit

Mariah Carey has a new compilation of her number one hits entitled, “#1 to Infinity.” Sound familiar? Yes, it’s her third. On Monday, the songstress gave fans a sneak peek of the music video for the album’s lead single, “Infinity.”

Although the single failed to crack Billboard’s Top 10 charts — it debuted at 82 earlier this month— Carey’s longtime label boss, L.A. Reid, says it’s not “realistic” to expect the Grammy Award-winning songstress to regain her previous chart-topping success in today’s music climate.

“Mariah Carey made her first hit record in 1991. To even be on the radio at this point in her career is a huge accomplishment, because radio doesn’t cater to veteran artists or legends,” he said.

But he didn’t stop there. In a new interview with Billboard, Reid explained why he feels veteran artists such as Carey, Bruce Springsteen and Prince have difficulty earning radio airplay.

“Radio caters to in-the-moment stars… Nobody that put out records 25 years ago is going to have a No. 1. Not Paul, Stevie, Bruce, Mick or Keith. Not Prince, not anyone. So if she can get on the radio, we’ve done damn good. Would we like to have a No. 1? F– yeah, I’m greedy. But it’s not realistic.”

Reid’s revealed his solution for veteran artists to the mag. “I like concept records, I like the idea of thematic, storytelling records. I love duets and the Great American Songbook. I think a great vocalist should un-cage themselves and think about things like that sometimes,” he stated.

“I mean, Frank Sinatra did it. It’s fun to sing songs you love. And let’s not forget that one of Mariah’s biggest hits, ‘I’ll Be There,’ was a cover. There are many things that Mariah can still do.”

Azealia Banks Calls BET Awards ‘Bogus,’ Says Nicki Minaj Wins ‘Every Year’

Azealia Banks is never one to hide her feelings, and it’s safe to say she’s really not feeling her BET Award nomination for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist.

Iggy Azalea, Nicki Minaj, Trina, Tink and Dej Loaf are up for the honor along with Banks, who took to Twitter on Monday to express her thoughts on the “bogus” award show:

Minaj certainly has been a favorite at the BET Awards and has taken home the Best Female Hip-Hop Artist for the last five consecutive years. She has yet to respond to Banks’ comments, but she’s likely basking in the afterglow of dropping the video for “Feeling Myself” with Beyonce.

Besides, Banks claims her comments weren’t supposed to be taken as jabs at Minaj anyway:

Marina Abramovic Is ‘Pissed’ At Jay Z, Says He ‘Completely Used’ Her

The performance art world and the hip-hop community merged in 2013 when Marina Abramovic collaborated with Jay Z. Now, however, the Godmother of Performance Art isn’t very happy with the rapper.

For Jay Z’s “Picasso Baby” music video, Hov adapted Abramovic’s 2010 MoMA retrospective, “The Artist Is Present,” by performing the song for six hours straight in New York’s Pace Gallery in front of celebrities and fans. Abramovic appeared in the video and even had what seemed to be a poignant head-touching moment with the rapper, but now she says she’s “pissed by” the aftermath of their collaboration. In an interview with Spike magazine, Abramovic said she only worked with Jay Z on one condition: “That he would help my institute.” Yet she claims “he didn’t.”

Abramovic says that Jay Z was supposed to help with her self-titled performance institute and museum space, which Lady Gaga worked with her on, much to the performance artist’s satisfaction. “He just completely used me,” Abramovic told Spike.

Although the performance artist, who most recently had a retrospective at SESC Pompéia in São Paulo, doesn’t regret her work with the “Glory” rapper, she won’t do it again. “In the end, it was only a one-way transaction,” she said. “I will never do it again, that I can say. Never.”

Whether that means Abramovic will never work with Jay Z again specifically or major celebrities in general remains to be seen. We know those Lars Von Trier rumors weren’t true (as she confirmed to The Huffington Post last November), but we can expect some film projects from the artist in the future.

For the full interview, head to Spike.

Emma Stone Says Her ‘Heart Swells Up’ When She Hears Andrew Garfield’s ‘Poetic’ Words

Everyone’s favorite Hollywood couple, Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield, may have split in April, but the actress can still appreciate Garfield’s way with words.

The “Aloha” star sat down with Diane Keaton for her cover story in Interview magazine, for which the two reflected on their careers and shared movie memories. During the interview, Keaton also quoted something Garfield said about Stone in the actresses’ July 2012 cover issue of Vogue.

“Andrew Garfield said, ‘Working with Emma was like diving into a thrilling, twisting river and never holding on to the sides,'” Keaton says to Stone. “‘From the start. To the end. Spontaneous. In the moment. Present. Terrifying. Vital. The only way acting with someone should be.’ My God. I mean, what did you feel when you heard such a dream-come-true observation?”

Stone praised Garfield: “He is such a poet,” she said, laughing. “But that’s the way he writes in general. So I hear it and of course my heart swells up. And I also know that he writes things like that on a daily basis.”

Although Stone and Garfield had previously dated since 2011, the two reportedly broke up last month over what sources cited as issues with long distance. However, Stone’s Interview with Keaton took place in March, before the split, according to People magazine. Either way, we’re going to pretend Garfield is still writing his heart-swelling poetry every day.

Why Sofia Vergara Says She’d Be ‘OK’ With Losing Her Fame

Sofía Vergara is at the pinnacle of her career thanks to a handful of endorsement deals and her role as Gloria in ABC’s Emmy-winning series “Modern Family.” But the Colombian-born actress recently said she never expected to become an actress, much less famous.

Vergara, 42, is set to grace the cover of Cosmo for Latinas’ summer issue, out on newsstands May 19. In her interview with the magazine, the star spoke about why she wouldn’t mind losing her fame, and her experience as a Latina in Hollywood.

The “Modern Family” star has been TV’s highest-paid actress for three consecutive years. But her success, she says, is not something she ever expected or aimed for.

“Sometimes you want fame to go away a little bit, because you want to do normal things,” Vergara told Cosmo For Latinas. “I think I’m old enough that I’ve already enjoyed all of it, so if it goes away, I think I’m still going to be OK. It was never really what I was looking for — it wasn’t even being an actress or being famous — it was just supporting myself and making money and doing a business for myself.”

When asked about her thoughts on the lack of Latinos in Hollywood, the actress said the community should instead focus on the recent success of Golden Globe-winning “Jane The Virgin” star Gina Rodriguez and director Alejandro González Iñárritu’s big win at this year’s Academy Awards.

“There aren’t as many roles for Latinas as we would want there to be, but we shouldn’t be complaining because a Latin girl just won a Golden Globe, a Latin director just won an Oscar,” Vergara told the magazine. “We should be very happy that there are people out there who are doing things and being recognized.”

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times earlier this month, however, Vergara did note that she feels there aren’t enough Latinos behind the scenes writing in Hollywood.

And the actress isn’t wrong about the numbers. “The Latino Media Gap,” a report released last June by Columbia University, found that between 2010 and 2013, only 2 percent of TV writers with a “critical position” were Latino.

“The problem is there aren’t Latin people creating content,” Vergara told the newspaper. “Many of them are doing soap operas. It is a lack of Latin people writing. It’s not the fault I think of an American writer. Usually when you write, you write what you know about. I admire the people who write for Gloria in ‘Modern Family.’ They’re mostly men. Mostly they’ve had wives like Julie Bowen’s character, but they’ve never had a Latin woman.”

For more on Sofia Vergara’s interview, head to Cosmo For Latinas.

Kylie Jenner Says She’s ‘High As F–k’ In Snapchat Video

Kylie Jenner is pretty good at keeping secrets (she spent all those months denying she had lip injections), so we’re pretty sure she knows what is and isn’t the best idea to post on social media.

And yet here we are. On Wednesday, the 17-year-old took to Snapchat where she posted a number of photos and videos of herself and boyfriend Tyga on a flight, but one video is just not like the others.

“I’m high as fuck,” Jenner is heard saying before taking a bit of what appears to be a biscuit (she shared a photo of what looks like a Popeyes’ fried chicken meal earlier that day), and reacts as though it’s the best thing she’s ever tasted. “Oh my God,” she says as her eyes light up.

We’re not sure if Jenner is referring to the altitude, but The Huffington Post has reached out to her rep for comment.

Bill Maher Says 4/20 Should Be A National Holiday On ‘Real Time’

Bill Maher wants stoner holiday 4/20 to be officially recognized.

On HBO’s “Real Time With Bill Maher” Friday night, the host announced that he’d created a Change.org petition calling on Congress to make April 20 a national weed-related holiday. He then showed his panelists how he likes to celebrate the day with a reading of “‘Twas the Night Before 4/20,” a riff on the famous poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas.”

“Twas the night before 4/20 and all through the crib,” read Maher, “not a creature was stirring, not even — did you hear something? Is the door locked?”

“I was wearing a T-shirt and shorts from the gym,” he continued. “I had just settled down to watch Adult Swim.”

When It Comes To Feminism And Reproductive Rights, Survey Says Labels Don’t Work

New research from Vox revealed that while a very small percentage of Americans identify as feminists, the majority still believe in gender equality.

The survey included 1,067 participants from across the U.S. and covered topics including gender equality, LGBT issues and abortion. Twenty-one percent of participants were between 18 and 29 years old, 25 percent were between 30 and 44 years old, 27 percent were between 45 and 59 years old and 27 percent were over 60 years old. About half the participants identified as female and half as male.

Vox found that only 18 percent of Americans consider themselves feminists. Fifty-two percent of survey participants said that they didn’t consider themselves feminists, 26 percent were “unsure” and 4 percent refused to answer the question.

With so few people identifying as feminists, you’d think most Americans wouldn’t support gender equality. Wrong. Vox found that a whopping 85 percent of participants responded that they do “believe in equality for women.” And 76 percent of participants believe there is still work to be done when it comes to “equality for women in work, life and politics.”

While the majority of Americans don’t choose to identify as feminists, they support the ideals of feminism. In the great words of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: “Feminism is the social, political and economic equality of the sexes.” It’s really that simple.

The survey found that Americans are equally as confused about where they stand on abortion as feminism. When asked about abortion, only 28 percent of participants agreed with the statement: “Abortion should be legal in almost all cases.”

However, when the survey question incorporated women, the results changed. When people were asked if “women should have a legal right to safe and accessible abortion in almost all cases,” 37 percent said yes.

“That’s a jump of nine percentage points in who thinks abortion ought to be generally legal, just by highlighting the fact that a woman is involved in the situation,” Vox’s Sarah Kliff wrote.

These results indicate just how complicated Americans’ feelings about reproductive rights are. “The public has diverse views on abortion. But it’s rarely a split between ‘abortion is right’ and ‘abortion is wrong,'” Kliff wrote. “Instead, there is a nuance that the public conversation typically misses: a factoring in of personal circumstances and beliefs that manifest themselves in deeply held individual views.”

While many people shy away from labels when it comes to women’s issues, it seems that most agree with the idea behind them: Women should have the same social, political and economic rights as men.

Head over to Vox to read the rest of the research.

Obama Says The GOP Has Just Shown How You Diminish Your Office

President Barack Obama drew laughs when he joked about his approval ratings, legal marijuana and executive actions at the annual Gridiron Club dinner in Washington on Saturday.

But when it came to the letter that 47 Republican senators recently sent to Iranian leaders warning that a nuclear deal could be undone by a future administration, Obama dropped the comedic routine.

“You don’t diminish your office by taking a selfie. You do it by sending a poorly written letter to Iran. Really. That wasn’t a joke,” he said, according to a pool report of the event.

Obama was referring to his use of a selfie stick during a recent appearance in a video for BuzzFeed to promote the Affordable Care Act. Conservatives claim that Obama has diminished the presidency by appearing in the BuzzFeed video, being interviewed by YouTube stars and going on late-night talk shows.

Obama has also said that he was “embarrassed” for the Republicans who sent the letter to Iran. Vice President Joe Biden has said that the letter was “beneath the dignity” of the United States Senate.

Republicans have defended the letter, saying that they had to speak out because Obama didn’t consult them.

Secretary of State John Kerry said on Sunday that he would not apologize to Iran for the GOP’s actions. Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), who orchestrated sending the letter, said that he had “no regrets.”

Jason Lee Says ‘Mallrats’ Was His ‘Biggest Letdown’

In 1995, Jason Lee was known more for being a professional skateboarder than making America laugh. Then “Mallrats,” a cult classic, came along, and Lee was never the same. And, despite its cultural status today, the box-office flop almost turned Lee off acting right when his career had just begun.

“Back then, I was coming up on 25 and feeling like maybe I’m done with [skateboarding],” Lee told host Ricky Camilleri in a HuffPost Live interview Thursday. “I had done ‘Mallrats’ and I thought maybe I would try to sort of gracefully get out of skating and overstay my welcome and try to do this movie thing. And then, lo and behold, when ‘Mallrats’ came out, three people saw it. It absolutely bombed.”

Lee, however, never went back. He went on to star in another beloved movie, “Chasing Amy,” and then onto the blockbuster “Enemy of the State” in 1998. The well-traveled actor might be most known for his role as title character in “My Name Is Earl,” which aired for four seasons from 2005 to 2009 on NBC.

Twenty years after that first role in “Mallrats,” Lee looks back fondly on those times. He remembers how excited he was to be a part of the movie and the naive confidence he had that the movie would be a smash hit. He wasn’t the only one hurt, either, when the movie didn’t make money; director Kevin Smith even changed his answering machine recording to properly reflect his feelings.

“‘Mallrats’ was the biggest letdown, though. It was, ‘Mom, I’m in a movie, can you believe it? Do you know how many people are going to see this and laugh and have so much fun?’ [And then] crickets,” Lee said with a laugh. “I think Kevin left an outgoing message on the production office’s answering machine after ‘Mallrats’ came out and bombed. ‘Hey, this is Kevin. We can’t get to the phone right now. We’re too busy licking our wounds.'”
