Prince Harry, Meghan Markle’s Struggles Eclipse Coverage of Prince Andrew Scandal in Britain

LONDON — The ITV documentary featuring Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will air in the U.S. later Wednesday, and it will no doubt draw millions of eyeballs, as it did on home turf last week.
Many viewers are already familiar with the few clips that have gone viral, but the documentary is wide-ranging and addresses a variety of subjects, casting a new light on the couple.
During the hour-long documentary, ITV reporter Tom Brady tracks Meghan and Harry’s journey through Africa and highlights the causes that the couple has been championing, as well as the struggles they are facing in the spotlight.
“It’s hard, in all fairness I had no idea, which probably sounds difficult to understand, but when I first met my now-husband, my friends we’re really happy but my British friends said, “I’m sure he’s great, but the British tabloids will destroy your life. She also talks about adopting the British stiff upper lip.
“I’ve said for a long time to H, it’s not enough to just survive something. That’s not the point of life. You have to thrive, and I think I really try to adopt this British sensibility, a stiff upper

Ed Helms Destroys Rolling Stone’s Rape Story Scandal During UVA Valedictory Speech

“Never let others define you, define yourselves.”

So began a seemingly comedic speech at the University of Virginia’s Valedictory Exercises by actor Ed Helms on Friday. In front of a large audience, the comedian peppered in jokes about Netflix and student loans before turning a harsh eye on the Rolling Stone rape story scandal, which has drawn widespread condemnation and lawsuits against the magazine.

“It has been said that a rolling stone gathers no moss,” Helms said. “I would add that sometimes a rolling stone also gathers no verifiable facts or even the tiniest morsels of journalistic integrity.”

“Rolling Stone tried to define you this year,” Helms said. “As a result, not only was this community thrown deep into turmoil, but the incredibly important struggle to address sexual violence on campuses nationwide was suddenly more confusing than ever and needlessly set back.”

The speech comes a month after Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism called Sabrina Rubin Erdely’s story “A Rape on Campus” a “journalistic failure” — a move that prompted Rolling Stone to retract the entire piece.

“The failure encompassed reporting, editing, editorial supervision and fact-checking,” the authors of the review said.

During his speech, Helms also delved into the strikingly negative news coverage of the Baltimore riots, chastising many major networks for their portrayal of the protestors as “thugs,” noting “Rolling Stone’s rush to define is just the tip of the iceberg.”

“The reductive labels aren’t helping and we better stop applying them, because there are a lot of Americans in a lot of pain,” Helms said. “We try to define others with simple labels because it makes the world easier to understand.”

“This community didn’t fall for the fallacy that just because Rolling Stone was wrong everything here must be perfectly peachy,” he continued. “You all had the courage to understand you can be outraged at Rolling Stone and still ask yourselves hard questions: When sexual violence does occur in our community, do we have the best possible protocols and resources available to our students? And UVA is charging forward to answer those questions and you should be proud of that.”

‘Scandal’ Star Bellamy Young Was Initially Only Cast For A Short, Three-Episode Arc

First Lady Mellie Grant’s intense personality and sharp wit has been an integral part of endless plot twists on ABC’s “Scandal,” but the character was intended to have only a short stint on the show.

Actress Bellamy Young joined HuffPost Live on Friday and said that showrunner Shonda Rhimes originally planned to break off Mellie’s rocky relationship with President Fitzgerald Grant, which would have left the character with a mere three-episode storyline. She explained to host Alyona Minkovski:

It’s a story about Fitz and Olivia, so I think that it was ancillary in their minds, initially. I just had two lines in the pilot and then when we got picked up, Shonda went around the table and started telling everyone what their arc would be over the first seven episodes… She got to me and… she said, ‘So I want to write a presidential divorce and I think you’ll be here about three episodes.’ And I was dying inside, but I was trying to keep smiling because I didn’t want to disappoint her.

Luckily, Young’s character made an impression on the writers, who decided to keep her around.

“Somehow they just found Mellie’s currency as a lever, as a wedge, and they started writing for it. And it’s been the most amazing ride,” Young said.

Racial Healing, Scandal and Popular Culture

“The stories we tell each other, the gossip we pass, and the media representation of events shape the meaning of our lives.” – -Rachel Godsil, Brianna Goodale, Perception Institute

The story of the brutal and untimely death of civil rights activist Jimmie Lee Jackson of Marion, Alabama, has been referenced in speeches, history books and news articles since that tragic day in 1965. But, when stories are told by a member of that community as in Ava DuVernay’s Selma film portrayal, the power of those authentic stories can touch hearts, open minds, mobilize masses and create opportunities for healing.

In the past two years, some of our nation’s most influential movies and television shows have dealt with racism and bias. From Fruitvale Station to Selma, Scandal to House of Cards, celebrated writers, actors and directors have brought these issues to the mainstream. This has all been accompanied by a drumbeat crescendo of news and analysis that goes beyond specific incidents to examine the roots of these issues and the trends that reinforce them.

For those of us who work for racial equity and healing each day, this is an encouraging trend and an opportunity, especially given Hollywood’s historical lack of support for people of color in front of and behind its cameras. As writers and producers become more diverse, they bring their own experiences, relationships and networks — resulting in well-crafted storylines with recognizable experiences.

These important pop culture moments may seem separate from our day-to-day lives, but stories matter. Research from the Perception Institute says that “culture plays an important role in reinforcing implicit bias, increasing our racial anxieties and undermining conversations about racial equality and opportunity.” And we also know that accurate, honest pop culture narratives can successfully combat stereotypes.

In just the past few weeks, the hit shows Scandal and House of Cards have addressed issues of race, while the 87th Annual Academy Awards became the subject of criticism for failing to include any black actors or directors and few others of color. On Scandal, we witnessed the gripping tale of an unarmed black teen fatally shot by a police officer and a father’s anguish when sitting over his son’s body calling out “He didn’t carry a knife” repeatedly to an ever-growing crowd. The protagonist, Olivia Pope, hired to help diffuse the situation, speaks truth to the police chief when he starts to ready the riot gear: “There is a dead child lying in the street in front of their homes. What would you do if there was a dead child, a child you knew, lying in the street in front of your home? The fact that they stand in groups and say things you do not like does not make them a mob … it makes them Americans.”

In true television fashion, justice comes swiftly when we learn that the knife was planted but not before the officer reveals his biases in a rant: “The truth is, those people in Rosemead have no respect for anything or anyone … Brandon Parker is dead because he didn’t have respect, because those people out there who are chanting and crying over his body, they didn’t teach him the right values.”

Those last few minutes say so much, an officer classifying entire swaths of a community, making a claim that a young child threatened his safety — and having that claim not be questioned, the chief having to be reminded that those gathered and grieving have the right to do so. It’s difficult for me to imagine how any viewer no matter what race would not have been moved by the pain generated in those moments. Importantly, if the media were able to capture the stories of parents, families and communities mourning the needless deaths of Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, Eric Gardner, Weinjian Lu, Rafael Ramos, Deah Shaddy Barakay, Yusor Mohammad and Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha and countless others, change might come about more swiftly.

Yet another timely example was how House of Cards used one its lead characters — the powerful and confident White House Chief of Staff “Remy” — to depict the horror, shame and powerlessness felt by so many men of color in the face of police bias. In a telling scene, Remy was pulled over by local police without apparent cause, arrested and slammed onto the hood of his vehicle just blocks from his post at the White House.

The trend is showing no signs of slowing down. The reactions to the Justice Department’s recent investigations, and the most recent high profile police killing of an unarmed black teen show that these issues will remain a part of the national conversation. Those reactions will continue to shape the stories we tell.

For five years, my colleagues at the W.K Kellogg Foundation, other foundations, our grantees and communities around the nation have generated tangible examples of what change looks like when people have the space to heal and work together for a better world. We embrace those who tell unvarnished stories about the impact of biases, the rich contributions of all people of color, and the benefits of an inclusive playing field. Pop culture is a forum where people are both entertained and enlightened. It simultaneously reflects the culture and pushes it forward. Let’s harness these moments by leveraging your water cooler conversations, social media platforms or mealtime discussions to highlight the impact of our unique stories. We can reimagine and refocus the narrative about people of color in this country, fostering a dialogue built on the equal and inherent value of all people, particularly men, women and children of color.

It’s Been Handled: We Played Office Dress-Up in The Limited x Scandal Collection

Like you, the Glamour team watches Scandal and rehashes while grabbing coffee in the office (Nikki’s also a pretty prolific real-time tweeter should you need to discuss in the heat of the moment). It’s been so fun seeing Olivia Pope wear actual pieces from The Limited‘s collection with the show that I asked whether we could get some of the items into the office for us to play around with and, you know, maybe pretend we were having our own super-serious gladiator moments.

the-limited-scandal-black-white-trench-glamour-editors
Nikki got to wear this amazing black and white trench, totally spotted on Olivia in one of her power-striding moments. “The minute I saw it I fell in love,” she said. “It’s a fun new take on the traditional trench coat, and I’d ideally wear it with a chunky knit sweater, gray jeans, and black pumps.” She took it off long enough for a few of us to also try it on and we were collectively impressed by how well-made it felt and flattering it was on everyone. It’s sadly sold out online, but was so fab it’s worth a trip to your local brick and mortar to see if they’ve still got any in stock.

the-limited-scandal-poncho-glamour-editors

Julie and I both squealed when we pulled this plaid poncho out of the bag. Olivia Pope aside, she’d been searching for the silhouette and I was happy she got to try it out with this one. If you think figuring out what to wear it with would be tricky, don’t: Julie came to work in a sweater dress and leggings, not expecting to top it with a cape, and it worked beautifully. You can shop it here.

the-limited-scandal-blazer-glamour-editors
“I felt so professional and take-charge in this blazer, and I loved how versatile it was,” Anna told me. “You could wear it open or zipped up, but either way, I say pair with black pants and you’re ready to get things ‘handled.” It was one of the first pieces from the collaboration I remember Kerry Washington actually wearing and it definitely gave Anna the same sort of instant boss-lady polish (a good reason to keep it on the back of your chair in case you’re called to an impromptu meeting). Like the trench, it’s sold-out online but worth seeing if you can locate locally.
the-limited-scandal-peplum-glamour-editors
I loved this graphic black and white top on Olivia/Kerry and was excited for Lindsey to try it on. We played around with how to style it and what felt right to her. On the show, it was worn closed like a blouse, but Lindsey decided she actually liked it open as a little jacket. Either way: cute (and available).

the-limited-scandal-off-shoulder-sweater-glamour-editors
I was all about this off-the-shoulder sweater since it’s a major trend I’m loving in real life and captures the sexy-but-cozy style that’s perfect for a winter date night (or curling up on the couch alone with a long-stemmed glass of red, per Miss Pope). The top was long enough that our photographer actually asked me if it was a dress and that coverage means it could work with leggings. To dress it up for the office, I skipped jeans and paired with leather leggings.

Have you seen any of the collaboration pieces in person? If you haven’t, you seriously should stop by the next time you’re in the mall.

Why Actress Darby Stanchfield Refuses To Hug ‘Scandal’ Co-Star Scott Foley

Actress Darby Stanchfield may be the only woman in the world to ever turn down a hug from Scott Foley.

After Foley revealed Stanchfield’s staunch stance on hugs in a HuffPost Live interview last month, Stanchfield stopped by the studio to set the record straight.

As a new cast member on season two of the hit ABC show, Foley was a little too reserved for Stanchfield. While the rest of the actors behaved like rowdy “14-year-olds at summer camp” during each table read, Foley kept his cool.

“We’re all like pounding on the tables and high-fiving each other and hugging each other and laughing and crying through the table reads and such,” she said. “And he had this energy, and Portia de Rossi [who guest stars this season] went through it too, of like, ‘Okay, they seem cool, but is this real?’”

After picking up on Foley’s calm demeanor, Stanchfield opted for a handshake on their their first meeting, and the formal greeting just stuck.

“I shook his hand for the first time I met him, and it just kind of felt like this joke — like this natural thing of, like, we’re on handshake terms,” she said. “It felt like a thing of respect at the beginning, then it just became this joke of, like, ‘Dude, I don’t hug you.’”

Jon Stewart And ‘The Daily Show’ Are Ready For The NEXT Nude Photo Scandal

Some people are blaming the victims of the Hollywood nude photo hacking scandal for taking the pictures in the first place. But on Wednesday night’s “Daily Show,” host Jon Stewart fired back with the perfect response.

“I get it. These women were asking for it,” Stewart said. “It’s like they said to the Boston Strangler’s victims: ‘If you don’t want to get strangled, you shouldn’t have had a neck.'”

With that, Stewart turned to Senior Technology Correspondent Jordan Klepper, who’s clearly ready for the hackers: He appeared completely nude with his (hopefully not real) bank account and password information scrawled across his body.

“I’m taking back my sexual power,” Klepper declared. “You want celebrity naughty bits? Here they are: DING DING DING DING DING. Dinner time, you sick fucks!”

Check out Stewart’s look at the story in the clip above… and see more of Klepper than necessary below.

Jimmy Savile Sexual Abuse Scandal: 500 People Reported Incidents By Late Entertainer, Children’s Charity Claims

LONDON (AP) — A British children’s charity says at least 500 people have reported abuse by the late entertainer Jimmy Savile, with the youngest alleged victim just 2 years old.

The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children said Monday that the most common age group for victims was 13 to 15. Peter Watt, the charity’s director of child protection, said Savile was a “prolific sex offender … (who) lost no opportunity to identify vulnerable victims and abuse them.”

The cigar-chomping, platinum-haired Savile was a British television fixture for several decades, but after his death at 84 in 2011, witnesses and victims came forward to accuse him of sexual abuse. Police have since described the television and radio presenter as a serial sexual predator who used his fame to target young and mostly female victims, from star-struck teens at television recordings to patients in hospital beds.

A police investigation concluded last year that Savile’s abuse spanned half a century and included at least 214 offenses, most against victims under 18.

The NSPCC researched Savile’s crimes as part of a BBC documentary to be aired Monday.

It found more alleged victims than previously thought at Broadmoor psychiatric hospital. Police say they have received 16 allegations of abuse inside the institution.

Savile visited frequently as part of his charity work and was given his own set of keys to the hospital. In 1988, he was hired as an adviser to help resolve staff-management tensions at Broadmoor.

‘Scandal’: Mellie Pleads With Olivia To Come Back And Run Fitz’s Campaign (VIDEO)

In an unexpected turn of events on the latest “Scandal,” it was Mellie who was desperate to get Olivia back on Team Fitz. She may not have liked it, but she knew that her husband was better when his mistress was in the picture.

“He needs you, Olivia,” she pleaded. “He is tired, and broken and it isn’t the job. It’s doing the job without you. He’s not alive when you’re not here. He can’t breathe when you’re not here. He doesn’t have the will to run, much less win, when you’re not here, because you … you’re everything to him, Liv.”

Buddy TV’s Kelly Schremph felt bad for Mellie during that scene, but TVLine’s Matt Webb Mitovich thought the speech did the trick — so it might prove worth it. He figures it’s just a matter of time before Olivia agrees to run Fitz’s reelection campaign.

But, as E! Online’s Jenna Mullins pointed out, there is one potential hurdle. The episode also suggested that Fitz was responsible for taking down the plan that killed Olivia’s mother.

“Scandal” airs every Thursday at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.

TV Replay scours the vast television landscape to find the most interesting, amusing, and, on a good day, amazing moments, and delivers them right to your browser.
