Public School Pre-Fall 2016

DUBAI — Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne of Public School took their pre-fall show to Dubai, showing Monday night in a specially constructed space at the Dubai Design District with a view of the world’s tallest building.

The designers described the collection as a contrast between technology and nature. “It’s about where they meet and the idea of permanence in nature giving way to this fleeting platform of new ideas and the constant demand for newness,” said Chow. “It’s an interesting contrast that we played with, especially to do this here in Dubai which is essentially a new city just plopped in the middle of the desert.”

The natural elements in the collection included Japanese Shibori print jackets with ethnic-inspired necklines. “We used the idea of traditional indigo dyeing, but playing with it in our way, mixing with sports tailoring. The jackets were contrasted with sports stripes hanging from the arm,” said Osborne.

The collection also brought mesh to the top layer of pieces, using a two-tone mesh fabric of navy and white, creating a 3-D effect when layered over the Shibori print. “We’ve always had it as an underpinning of mesh in our collections, but using it this way was a way

Inside The School Where Children With HIV Find Refuge From Discrimination In China

Kun Kun, a young boy living with HIV, was banished from his village in China last year by residents who described him as a “ticking time bomb.” The case drew international attention to the severe discrimination faced by children with HIV in China.

Kun Kun has since found a new home, at the Green Harbor Red-Ribbon School in Linfen, China. The boarding school is a rare refuge for HIV-positive children in China, where infection rates are relatively low, but social stigma is high.

The school is the subject of an ambitious documentary project called “Children of the Harbor,” which is following the students’ passage through the boarding school until the first class graduates in 2017.

The project was conceived by Bryan Anker, a 27-year-old medical student originally from Los Angeles, who lived at the Green Harbor school in 2012 during an internship at the affiliated hospital.

“It broke my heart to learn that these children had been shunned by society all of their lives,” Anker told The WorldPost by email. ”The level of awareness these children possess is mind-boggling. They fully comprehend their current situation and are well aware of how society perceives them.”

Anker and his small team of filmmakers, including Myanmar-based photographer, journalist and cinematographer Ann Wang, started to document the students’ lives in December and plan to follow their stories through graduation. “We want to film up to this point and see what road the students take after graduation. Will they go to university? Will they return home? Will they find a job?” Anker said.

“These children are smart and resilient, and some of them have thought up intricate plans for escaping the HIV stigma in China,” he told The WorldPost.

The school was set up in 2006, and is home to around 30 children and teenagers with HIV, ranging in age from 6 years old to 19.  The students have “very complicated feelings … about themselves, about the school and about the disease they’ve been carrying since birth,” Wang told The WorldPost by email.

Many of them are the children of patients being treated for HIV/AIDS at the affiliated Linfen Infectious Disease Hospital; others have been orphaned by AIDS or thrown out of their schools and local communities due to stigma.

This is a pervasive problem for children with HIV in China. “If their HIV status has been disclosed, it’s very common that parents of other children complain to the school and force the school to separate their children from HIV positive children,” Xu Wenqing, an HIV/AIDS specialist at UNICEF China, told The WorldPost by email.

Nearly 10,000 children in China live with HIV/AIDS, among some 500,000 reported cases in the country. (Experts estimate the total number of cases, including those undiagnosed, may be around 800,000.) This is relatively low compared to countries like the U.S., which has a population a quarter of the size of China’s, and an estimated 1.2 million HIV/AIDS cases among people 13 or older.

Yet discrimination is widespread, and affects old and young alike in China. Advocates say people known to be HIV-positive are often barred from attending collge or refused public and private-sector jobs. The main problem is a lack of information about HIV/AIDS, including how it is transmitted and treated. Experts point to China’s poor sexual health education and the ongoing repetition of myths about HIV by public officials.

China’s leaders have made a high-profile effort to combat this prejudice in recent years, as well as stepping up free treatment for AIDS patients and measures to prevent mothers from passing on HIV to their newborn children. In 2006, a new law banned discrimination against people living with HIV, although it has been difficult to enforce. On World AIDS Day last year, China’s first lady Peng Liyuan released a music video with the students of Green Harbor-Red Ribbon School, urging an end to the stigma they face.

Anker hopes that telling the stories of the children at Green Harbor can convince more people to leave their prejudices behind.

“I believe the children’s stories are so poignant, and their personalities so radiant, that our viewers won’t have any choice but to empathize with their situation,” he said.

TV and the Movies Go Back to School

High school is a universe of seemingly endless drama — with nuggets of comedy, too — as these 30 classic movies and TV shows set in the classroom perfectly illustrate. From the working-class students of 1967’s “To Sir, With Love” to the enthusiastic songbirds of modern-day “Glee,” high school characters have made us laugh, cry and beat a hasty path to our local mall — to scoop up the plaid skirts and knee socks of “Clueless,” the legwarmers of “Fame,” the hooded Bajas of “Fast Times at Ridgemont High.” Who can forget Ferris Bueller’s white wingtips and Tracy Flick’s prim sweater vests and Jordan Catalano’s leather choker? And the hair — “Don’t touch the hair,” insisted Vinnie Barbarino of “Welcome Back, Kotter.” As millions of teenagers head back to school, here’s a look back at their most entertaining fictional counterparts.

Shadows on the School Grounds

Shadows on the School Grounds

If you’d ask Miona what she really thinks of her new school, most likely she’d tell you she isn’t too pleased with it. Her reasons might go like this:1. Not only there isn’t any car-flying class like some kids in her old school had told her, but2. Most subjects are tough and no fun at all,3. Discipline is even tougher than in her old school. The Dean, for one, is this big human woman with a quick switch and no sense of humor, who seems to have taken a strong dislike in her since the first day of school,4. Another lie that went around in her old school: most chores are done by school personnel. N-o-t T-r-u-e. She has to do them, just like at her old school or at home,5. Worse still: she can’t make friends in her own class, because the class bully has taken a special interest in picking on her and scaring her classmates away from her. He’s also very good at getting her punished. Since the start of the school year-for nearly two months now-she has only been able to go home once, all thanks to him. But soon she finds another issue to add to her list: this school is d-a-n-g-e-r-o-u-s. There are shadows roaming the grounds. And the spy game Miona is forced to play might do much more than get her expelled and make her master angry at her. In fact she might need more than her brashness and strong sword fighting skills to check out of that game alive. More than the help from her new friends. What she may need is a strange, powerful gift she never knew she had. Excerpts: Flying Back From School “What are you doing?” Ruhul tried to stop her, but he could only grab the top of her skirt. She was already halfway through, her hands and head resting on the copilot seat, her stomach on its headrest, and her legs on the luggage compartment. He pulled on the skirt to try to force her back into the passenger compartment, but the fabric gave a warning sound so he eased up on it. Soon he had to let go to slow down their speed. “You’re going to kill us. Go back to the passeng

Fashion Flashback: What Top Designers Wore in High School

They wore bell-bottoms wider at the hem than at the waist, shoulder pads a linebacker would envy, glittery butterfly hair clips, fuzzy boas, and, of course, a few “sewed-it-myself” looks. When WWD asked designers — from Tommy Hilfiger and Norma Kamali to Brian Atwood and Pamela Love — to share memories of their back-to-school fashion choices, we discovered some were preppy wannabes and others were fans of grunge, but most were just teens trying to find their own personal style.

John Leguizamo Says High School History Makes Latino Students Feel ‘Invisible’

Latino contributions to U.S. history remain largely absent from high school history books, and John Leguizamo is doing something about it.

The 51-year-old actor and comedian sat down with HuffPost Live’s Alyona Minkovski Tuesday to discuss his upcoming film “American Ultra” and his upcoming comedy project “Latin History for Dummies.”

Over the years, Leguizamo has had success with autobiographical one-man shows like “Freak” and “Ghetto Klown,” in which he details his life experiences as a Latino growing up in the U.S. These projects, he told HuffPost Live, arose partly because he felt Latinos were underrepresented in the media.

“It was like, I’m watching TV and I’m watching movies and listening to radio and we’re invisible,” Leguizamo said. “I was like, where are all the Latin people that I hang out with and goof with all day and talk about politics and talk about art?… So I started writing my own stuff, I wanted to see my people the way I saw them.”

On the topic of Latino visibility, the comedian showed particular concern for the absence of Latinos in U.S. history education — despite research that shows Latino students exposed to ethnic studies perform better in school.

“Just imagine, you’re a white kid and all of a sudden everybody’s Latin and everything they’re teaching you is Latin and you don’t hear anything about yourself or about your contributions,” Leguizamo said. “You don’t know hear about George Washington, you don’t hear about Thomas Jefferson and you feel like you haven’t contributed anything. How would you feel? How would you think of your future? How would you think of your participation in American culture?”

“You feel like an invisible person screaming in the woods and nobody hears you,” he added. “And it’s really weird and unfair because we had huge contributions.”

Watch Leguizamo discuss Latino contributions to U.S. history above. And watch the full segment below to hear the actor’s thought on who is to blame for the lack of Latinos in film.

High School Made You A Better Person

What has not cankering Time made worse?

Viler than grandsires, sires beget

Ourselves, yet baser, soon to curse

—Horace

Since the days of the poet Horace, adults have always fretted about the moral decay of the younger generation. Ninety years ago, for example, the New York City Board of Education issued a report in which they decried the decline of character among New York City’s school-aged children. Their tone was eerily similar to Horace’s. To the authors of that report, the remedy for the sorry moral state of our school-aged children was clear: They needed character education, the aim of which “should be to develop clear-cut conceptions of positive virtues, to present the principles of right living that will govern boys and girls in making moral decisions.” They described their charges’ lack of such principles in the following terms:

The shock comes when we learn their code of morals. These same delightful young people believe that it is all right if they can “get away with it.” They lack respect for parents and for authority. To copy home-work is entirely honorable if they are not caught. Forging a signature is a simple way of saving a lot of trouble. “Cutting” is to be commended if they can “get by.” Thieving is a matter of almost daily occurrence. Cheating is no disgrace if the offender is not detected. . . . When called to account they are seldom sorry that they have offended, but they are extremely sorry they “got caught.” . . . They have adopted the code of the street because they have never learned a higher code of morals.

Today, parents, teachers, and political leaders seem no less worried about the sorry moral state of our children, and the schools still get the lion’s share of the blame. According to a recent survey, 93 percent of American parents of K-12 students view “the development of strong morals and ethics” as a “critical” or “very important” responsibility of our schools, but only half of the parents surveyed believed the schools were doing an acceptable job at it. Reinforcing the sentiment that the country needs a boost to its character quotient, presidents have proclaimed a “National Character Counts Week” every year since 1994, and, not to be outdone, the Senate has passed similar resolutions virtually every year since 1996. In that first presidential proclamation, President Bill Clinton issued this rallying cry:

As we seek to instill important values in a new generation of Americans, we must redouble our efforts to improve student learning, responsibility, and sense of belonging. We must revitalize the American ideal of community if our schools are to achieve their full potential. Adults, children, teachers—all of us must set an example. All of us can make a new beginning. Schools need to emphasize the fundamentals: building character and creating a stronger sense of self-worth.

Over the past two decades, private foundations, non-profit organizations, and individual school systems have responded to the call, designing and implementing programs designed to boost and fortify character. There are some encouraging report cards. One review of eighty-seven evaluative studies of forty-five different character education programs indicated that, in general, these programs do appear to be effective. How effective, and for how long, remains open to debate. But are we asking the wrong questions and looking in the wrong place? Under the hot light that has been trained onto “character education” in the schools over the past two decades, we’ve lost sight of a more fundamental fact about education for character. Character-building has always been one of the central goals of this nation’s educational philosophy, and by many measures, our educational system continues to succeed splendidly—even without any explicit programs of “character education” added on. Is character something that can be explicitly designed and targeted, or should it be seen as an offshoot of other kinds of learning experience?

What Is School For?

Let’s take a step back and consider this question in a broader perspective. Thomas Jefferson’s educational philosophy exerted a profound effect on how the American system of public education would grow and develop. In his “Report of the Commissioners Appointed to Fix the Site of the University of Virginia,” Jefferson defined six fundamental goals of a basic public education:

• “To give to every citizen the information he needs for the transaction of his own business;
• To enable him to calculate for himself, and to express and preserve his ideas, his contracts and accounts, in writing;
• To improve, by reading, his morals and faculties;
• To understand his duties to his neighbors and country, and to discharge with competence the functions confided to him by either;
• To know his rights; to exercise with order and justice those he retains; to choose with discretion the fiduciary of those he delegates; and to notice their conduct with diligence, with candor, and judgment;
• And, in general, to observe with intelligence and faithfulness all the social relations under which he shall be placed.”

Contracts. Morals. Duties. Rights. Order. Justice. Faithfulness. Diligence. The education Jefferson wanted the American system to dispense was, among other things, a moral education.

In Jefferson’s time, of course, significant limits were imposed on the education of women, people of color, and even white men who were not part of the property-owning class. Nonetheless, Jefferson’s view of education as a force for shaping character was highly influential in his own day, and it has remained so as educational access has increased and as membership in the civic community has been granted to many of those previously excluded. Indeed, for as long as we have been sending children to school on the American taxpayer’s dime, we have understood, as Jefferson did, that character education is a critical step in preparing young people to contribute to the republic as citizens and to take proper responsibility for their own destinies.

If we don’t appreciate the intrinsically character-building nature of our educational system, it is because we take it for granted. The moral dividends of education are hiding in plain sight, like water to the fish. This is because few of us are old enough to remember a time in American life when most children didn’t get at least a high school education. Think about it: today, high school graduation rates are higher than at any other time in history: In 1900 only one quarter of our children graduated from high school, but today more than eighty percent do. (For high-income families, the rate is even higher; for low-income families, it’s conspicuously lower.)

We can bring the hidden moral benefits of school to light so that we can better understand how a basic education improves the morality and character of young people—even at a time when the great majority of children complete high school. Social scientists have developed some ingenious methods for uncovering those hidden moral benefits. They mine historical data, they conduct longitudinal studies, and—most importantly—they examine the results of “natural experiments” that societies unwittingly conduct when policy changes randomly cause some groups of students to receive more education (or better education) than other groups of students. These natural experiments might occur, for instance, because of state-by-state differences in the passage of laws that raise the minimum ages at which people can enter the work force, or because of policy changes that abolish school enrollment fees or other barriers to entry. And these experiments tell a consistent story: The more education children receive—the earlier in life they start school, the later in life they finish, and the higher the quality of that education overall—the better the effects on character and conduct seem to be.

Education Reduces Crime

First, let’s consider the effects of education on crime. For decades, criminologists have known that educational attainment—the number of years of schooling people receive—is one of the best predictors of people’s likelihood of getting into trouble with the law: the more schooling, the less trouble. However, this association does not necessarily imply that education reduces crime. It is possible that involvement in crime reduces young people’s likelihood of staying in school (which would imply that causality runs in the opposite direction). Moreover it’s possible that there are various environmental and genetic factors involved that both reduce education and increase crime, thereby creating a spurious association between them. To draw firmer cause-and-effect conclusions, we need more information.

This is why the natural experiments to which I hinted above are so valuable. The story these natural experiments tell, according to the economist Lance Lochner, support the hypothesis that schooling makes crime go down. In the United States, for example, a one-year increase in a state’s average level of schooling (which might be precipitated by a state’s passage of a law that raises the minimum age at which children can enter the work force from, say, age fifteen to age sixteen) reduces the crime rate by more than 10 percent, and the likelihood that an individual will ever be incarcerated falls precipitously if that person has received about ten years of schooling or more. Similar results have been obtained in similar natural experiments from Great Britain and Italy. Overall, the research suggests that a one percentage point increase in the U.S. high school graduation rate would reduce the economic costs of crime by two billion dollars each year.

We are in a good position to conclude that education really does reduce people’s likelihood of being involved in property crimes and violent crimes. However, refraining from crime is merely one element of character. What about the other aspects of character that we look to education to shape? Here, too, we find evidence that education makes a positive contribution.

Generosity with Time and Money

More than forty studies indicate that education is associated with higher rates of charitable giving and community volunteering, even after taking into account potential confounding factors such as age and income. We shouldn’t get too excited about these studies, though, because few of them permit firm conclusions about cause and effect. However, two fascinating natural experiments do suggest that education might be the cause and generosity might be the effect.

In the first of these experiments, researchers found that students who had won a random lottery that enabled them to attend a private school for a reduced fee were subsequently more generous in their donations to several non-profit charities than were students who had not won the lottery. In another experiment conducted in Kenya, girls who received scholarships that provided them with cash grants and coverage of their school fees for two years were slightly more fair and generous in sharing money with an anonymous partner than were girls who applied for scholarships but did not receive them.

Citizenship

Civic engagement has long been known to be correlated with educational attainment, but only recently have natural experiments been conducted that enable us to determine whether the effects of education on civic engagement are of the cause-and-effect variety. According to natural experiments by Thomas Dee, a one-year increase in the minimum age at which U.S. children can leave school and enter the workforce increases their likelihood of registering to vote. It also increases people’s likelihood of actually voting by about forty percent. Likewise, schooling increases people’s newspaper readership, interest in elections, and interest in public affairs in general. An educated electorate apparently makes for a politically engaged electorate.

Trust, Tolerance, and Respect for Others

Finally, education appears to promote trust, respect, and tolerance for differing points of view. For nearly eight decades, in fact, psychologists have known that the most prejudiced people in any society tend to be the least educated. Also, both within and across societies, there is a strong positive correlation between the average number of years of schooling people obtain and the extent to which they trust others in general. What’s more, people who are surrounded by highly educated people within their own communities and states are more trusting and tolerant in general than those who are surrounded by less educated people. Thus, education can apparently build trust in two ways: by making you more trusting of your neighbors, and by making your neighbors seem more trustworthy to you.

Here too, the natural experiments just aren’t as plentiful as one might like, so it’s hard to make ironclad cause-and-effect conclusions. However, there are a couple of notable exceptions. For instance, the economist Kevin Denny took advantage of some major educational reforms that occurred in Ireland in 1968 (expensive fees required to obtain a secondary education were abolished) in order to estimate the causal effects of secondary education on attitudes toward homosexuals. His work shows that every year of additional education a student received as a result of this policy change led to a 5 percent increase in someone’s likelihood of agreeing strongly with the statement that “gays and lesbians should be free to live life as they wish.” Denny then went further and showed that one-year increases in the minimum legal age for leaving school—changes that occurred in different years for Ireland, England, Wales, and Scotland—also raised people’s tolerance of gays and lesbians. Using similar natural experiments from the United States, Thomas Dee found that increases in education strengthened people’s convictions in one of the bedrock foundations of liberal democracies—namely, the belief that minority groups and politically unpopular groups (including not only “homosexuals,” but also “anti-religionists,” and “communists,” as well) deserve to have their rights to free speech protected.

How Education Builds Character

Just how does modern school-based education by itself—independently of any add-on character education initiatives—exert these salutary effects on people’s character? How is it that we do not seem to need explicit ideological content in order to make the next generation more law-abiding, generous, politically engaged, trusting, and tolerant?

Nurture and Nature

First off, as I mentioned above, it’s possible that much of the relationship between education and virtue is due not to the causal effects of education on virtue, but rather, to other factors that raise people’s educational levels while at the same time influencing their character. For example, some of the environmental factors (such as, characteristics of one’s family or neighborhood) that make people more likely to stay in school might also be involved in keeping them out of trouble with the law, or in motivating them to be more generous with their time and money.

Similarly, to the extent that there are genetic factors responsible for both educational attainment and character, the appearance that education causes character may be due features of the human genome rather than of our schools. In 2013, a consortium of researchers identified three genes with single nucleotide polymorphisms, or SNPs (variations in DNA sequences that cause some people to have, say, a molecule of guanine at the same location within a single gene where other people have a molecule of cytosine) that were linked to educational attainment. Each of the three SNPs accounted for about one month of additional educational attainment; jointly, they explained about 2 percent of the individual differences in educational attainment. Even more fascinating is the fact that these three SNPs also accounted for about 2 percent of the variability in people’s IQs. This pattern of findings suggests that some of the relationship between education and IQ itself can be attributed to common genetic factors rather than to the effect of IQ on educational attainment (or the effect of educational attainment on IQ). If these SNPs (or others that have yet to be identified) are likewise involved in creating individual differences in, say, charitable giving or trust, then we’d be right to credit the relationship between educational attainment and virtue to our genes rather than to our schools.

Economists’ Darlings

In addition, there are two explanations that many economists like. The first is called incapacitation, and it is based on one of the fundamental facts of our universe: you can’t be in two places at once. Every hour or day spent inside a school is an hour or a day that is not spent selling drugs, stealing cars, or breaking into other people’s homes. According to the incapacitation explanation, education doesn’t encourage character. It prevents crime in the same way that house arrest does.

The incapacitation explanation holds some water. An experiment by Brian Jacob and Lars Lefgren and a separate natural experiment by Jeremy Luallen indicate that property crimes by juvenile offenders are more common on days when school is out of session (for example, due to teacher in-services or teacher strikes). This pattern is consistent with the incapacitation explanation. You can’t commit property crimes out in your community if you are locked inside the school. However, there’s a wrinkle: on the same days when the rates of juvenile property crimes are lowered by school attendance, rates of juvenile violent crimes are raised—probably because peer interactions while at school create opportunities for students to fight each other. There’s more to school’s salutary effects on character than incapacitation can explain on its own.

Another idea that economists like is that education provides people with skills (reading and arithmetic, for instance) that increase their value as workers. This basic truth applies across all occupational levels. All workers, no matter how menial their labor, are more valuable to their employers (and thus obtain higher wages) if they can read, write, and do basic figuring. As a result of the wage premium that comes from possessing even these basic skills, an educated worker encounters higher opportunity costs for an hour of crime than does an uneducated one. The greater your value to a legitimate employer, in other words, the more you stand to lose in the legitimate labor market by diverting your time and effort into criminal activity. The wage premium from education therefore very likely presents a major disincentive to pursuing a life of crime.

A Curriculum for Character

Explanations based on common genetic causes, common environmental causes, incapacitation, and the wage premium all have their uses, but they’re just the tip of the explanatory iceberg. Education itself—the skills, knowledge, and other cognitive tools that people learn through a formal education—almost certainly prepares our minds for character and virtue in more substantive ways as well.

Literacy, for instance, makes all sorts of moral miracles possible. In a community of readers and writers, it becomes possible to specify a set of rules that will govern the community’s behavior, and then to record those behaviors on an external memory device (papyrus, stone tablets, or a hard drive in a server farm somewhere). It’s also easier to follow a rule you can see with your mind’s eye and not just hear with your mind’s ear.

There’s more to literacy. Once rules are written down, they more readily become objects of scrutiny. Once the rules are externalized, objectified, and made public, community members can more readily turn those rules into objects of study. A rule that is externalized into print form—a rule that exists outside of our private mental representations of it—becomes a thing. Things can be studied, interrogated, and disputed. Moreover, because of the sophisticated moral discourse that writing and reading make possible, rules and laws might ultimately be revised, altered in scope, or chucked altogether. Protesting or seeking to modify unjust rules that are blindly observed but not formally codified is a bit like hunting the ever-elusive snipe. Once rules are codified, however, the odds of changing an arbitrary or bigoted rule may tilt slightly in the reformer’s favor.

Literacy, of course, has other beneficial effects on the development of character as well. Once we can read and write, we can keep external records of our debts, credits, and promises to others (and theirs to us). With external records of this nature in place, it becomes easier to enforce our contracts without conflict, and it becomes harder to shirk our obligations without dishonor. Writing then, becomes a commitment device that reduces the gap between the ideals we held for our behavior six months ago and what we actually feel like doing today.

What about numeracy? When you’ve mastered the basic arithmetic and then moved on to understand the calculation of percentages and the effects of compounding over time, your understanding of how numbers work affects your capacity to understand how the world works. This understanding informed by numeracy can be extraordinarily powerful goads to particular kinds of virtue. For example, some experience with the concept of interest rates allows one to appreciate the long-term benefits of saving and of patience.

In one important survey-based study, more than forty-two thousand British adults were asked to indicate which of two hypothetical rewards they preferred. The two rewards differed not only in their amounts (£45 vs. £75), but also in the amount of time participants would have to wait to obtain them (three days if they chose the £45 reward, but three months if they chose the £75 reward). If you preferred the smaller reward, you could get it more or less right away, but if you preferred the larger reward, you’d have to wait a while.

Education made a big difference in the choices people made. Participants who completed eleven or fewer years of education were substantially more likely to choose the smaller-but-sooner reward than were participants who completed additional years of education. The less education you had, more likely you were to prefer to take the money and run, even though turning down the larger-but-later reward implied walking away from an investment that would grow with an interest rate in excess of 700 percent per year. (At the time of this writing, many banks in the United States are trying to lure people into opening savings accounts by tempting them with interest rates of 1 percent per year.) The association between education and patience wasn’t spuriously caused by the effects of education on adult income, either: better-educated people were more patient even after statistical controls were put in place to control for any causality-muddling effects of age, gender, and income.

Of course, what makes patience a virtue is not only its financial benefits, and we aspire to have education be associated with patience understood and practiced in a broader way. Patience is a virtue because of the crucial role it plays in honesty, fidelity, responsibility, trust, regard for others, and healthy living. To take just one example of the broader character dividends that come from patience, consider cooperation. Building and maintaining successful cooperative relationships requires us to resist the temptation to have a cut-throat, take-no-prisoners attitude toward our interactions. To the extent that we take our neighbors’ interests into account when trying to obtain good outcomes for ourselves (rather than pursuing a scorched-earth policy by which we always try to maximize our short-term gain, no matter how costly it is to our partners), those partners will seek us out in the future for more interaction. Working repeatedly with partners who trust you can be much more productive than seeking out new partners for every new venture because of the bridges you burned with your previous partners.

Education also provides people with a set of general-purpose reasoning skills that cannot help but improve our character. If they have already stipulated that Socrates is a man and that all men are mortal, then all reasonable people must necessarily agree that Socrates is mortal. By application of this same syllogistic reasoning, we can derive some moral conclusions. For example, if we all agree that (a) John is a human and (b) all humans are entitled to a set of basic human rights, then all reasonable people must conclude that John is entitled to that same set of basic human rights. The fact that, by virtue of his race, religion, sexuality, or politics, John is a member of a group that we dislike is irrelevant. No amount of special pleading can undo this iron logic (although it is possible through self-deception to shield oneself from its implications).

But the link of education and character is even deeper than that. Indeed, the secondary-school curriculum itself is shot through with character-relevant implications. The basic biology and neuroscience to which every high school student should have access before graduating sets the stage for many startling intellectual discoveries, such as the fact that humans are not the only sentient and social beings in world; there are many creatures that feel pain, suffer, and prefer certain fates over others. These facts are morally relevant—how could they not be?—and with proper guidance, learning them can be the occasion for students to thoughtfully contemplate how they wish to treat the other animals with whom we share this planet.

Psychology and history are morally relevant, too. The basic lessons of group dynamics that normally get covered in a twelfth-grade psychology course, when paired with the miserable lessons to be learned about the costs of war from a study of history, are available to help people resist the saber-rattling of sincere-sounding, smooth-talking leaders who would rush our nations into war in the wake of terror or the heat of vengeance. The literacy, numeracy, tools for reasoning, and cold hard facts about nature and history that make up a basic education don’t just make us smarter; they can make us better, too.

The Kids Will Be Alright

There is a joke about a recovering alcoholic, ten years of sobriety under his belt, who is always inviting a friend with a drinking problem to come with him to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. “I know the people who go to that meeting,” the not-yet-bottomed-out friend replies in a moment of candor, “they’re all just a bunch of hypocrites.”

“Well, if you think they’re hypocrites now,” the friend-in-recovery responds, “you should have seen them before they started coming to AA.”

We suffer from the same shortsightedness when we fail to appreciate the powerful role that education plays in shaping the character of our young people. Education on its own—without any fillers or additives, and without any specific ideological agenda—is character education, and it always has been. Sensible programs of deliberate character education should be developed and actively encouraged to supplement our children’s development of the virtues we all care about. But as we take advantage of opportunities for these sorts of character-education experiments, let’s all take a deep breath and admit for once and for all that Horace was wrong. Our offspring are not destined to be worse than we are. In the main, our kids are doing well, and we’re doing well by them. After all, 80 percent of the kids in this country are already receiving a full dose of the best character-education program we have to offer them—a comprehensive K-12 education. In the interest of character building, as we continue to look for meaningful ways to add character-specific content to our schools, let’s also keep trying to get a full dose to that final 20 percent who are still having to make do without.

Here’s Channing Tatum. In High School. Wearing A Thong.

The year was 1998, and Channing Tatum was a spry young high school student who liked to compete in bodybuilding competitions. In this photo, you can see the now-35-year-old actor doing a bit of preparation for his future role as a male stripper (both in real life and on the big screen in Magic Mike); he’s wearing a tiny black thong while flexing his muscles on stage, standing next to his equally good-looking opponent.

The 3 Biggest Things I Wish I Didn’t Stress Over in High School

High school: A place where you spend four vital years learning, making friends, and finding yourself. I went to Archbishop Molloy, a Marist high school in Queens, New York. I loved my high school, I made the best of friends that I’m still close with today, I had great teachers who I still reach out to for advice and I learned lessons not only that I used inside the classroom but throughout the rest of my life. I credit my high school for helping shape me to be the person who I am today.

However, even though I loved high school, I wouldn’t go back and do it again. Don’t get me wrong — I had a lot of great times and great memories, but there were also many days I spent stressing over the littlest things. I wish I could go back to myself at 14 and say, “A few years from now, none of the things that you spend time worrying about will matter.”

Boys. My sophomore year of high school I remember many nights of sitting in my room, upset and listening to Taylor Swift’s “Fifteen.” It seemed like having a boyfriend was the best thing in the world, and I was never a part of that exclusive “I have a boyfriend club.” I would see classmates having a boyfriend and I would think that having a boyfriend would magically make all my problems go away. Everyone was so happy in their relationships, that I felt like total loser for never having a boyfriend in high school. I can’t believe I spent so much time wondering if a boy had noticed me.

Growing up, I realized that I wasn’t going to find the love of my life in high school, and that having a boyfriend while I’m trying to focus on my grades would’ve just been a distraction. I also wasn’t ready for a mature relationship and the long-term relationship that I wanted wasn’t found in high school. The boys that I had crushes on totally aren’t my type anymore — it was just the idea of having a boyfriend that excited me. Don’t let the thought of having a boyfriend or a significant other take you away from things that really matter. Also, once you’re out of high school there are so many people out there who are waiting to meet you!

Fitting in. It doesn’t matter what people think about you, I repeat: It doesn’t matter what people think about you. I wanted every single person to like me, and only now do I realize, that’s impossible. No matter how nice you are or how much you try, there will always be someone who doesn’t like you. I cared so much about what other people thought about me, that I started losing who I was. I would shop at certain clothing stores because other girls in my grade were, or I’d want the latest technology because everyone else had it. It was when I started being honest with myself,2015-06-19-1434725827-2571197-183890_10150326746758939_2572568_n.jpg and showing people who I truly was that I started meeting people who liked me for who I was — and not who I was trying to be. And eight years later, they are still my best friends who I road trip to go see Taylor Swift in concert with. Be confident in the person that you are, and you’ll find people who like you for just being you.

Not getting picked for things. High school can be competitive, trying out for sports teams, leadership positions in clubs and comparing test scores. I remember that I didn’t get picked for a leadership position in high school that I desperately wanted and I was devastated. I thought, “What’s wrong with me? Why am I not good enough?” I would beat myself up over the fact that other people got this position and I didn’t.

That leadership position clearly wasn’t meant for me at that time. I was able to find another club in my high school that I absolutely loved, and if I had gotten the other position I wouldn’t have ever even considered joining it. You may not get the spot on the sports team or get the highest test score in your class, or get that leadership position. But the good thing about high school is that there are a lot of other clubs you can get involved in, and if not, you can always start your own. This is something that stayed with me throughout my life — that if I didn’t get something that I really wanted, I would just say it wasn’t meant for me and that something better is in store.

2015-06-19-1434725579-1108699-251271_10150274148328939_6122165_n.jpg When I was in middle school I always thought high school was going to be like my favorite television shows like One Tree Hill, Laguna Beach and Degrassi. But rest assure high school was nothing like what I saw on TV and that’s probably a good thing because the shows had a lot of drama.

Your high school experience is what you make of it. Meet as many people as you can, get involved and join a club, raise your hand and ask questions and most importantly, have fun. Your high school days are days that you will never be able to get back. It goes by pretty fast. One day you’re nervous walking into the first day of high school and the next you’re walking on stage to get your high school diploma.

Kendrick Lamar Visits High School That Praised His Work

Kendrick Lamar’s latest album “To Pimp A Butterfly” has received rave reviews from critics and has even served as inspiration for one high school English teacher.

During the recent school year, English teacher Brian Mooney’s applied the messages behind the lyrics into his daily curriculum, drawing parallels from Lamar’s album to Toni Morrison’s novel “The Bluest Eye.”

Mooney chronicled his classroom experience in a blog post, which just happened to catch the attention of Kendrick. It eventually led the Grammy Award-winner to make a surprise visit to Mooney’s high school in North Bergen, N.J on June 8 where he performed one of his songs from the album, “Alright.”

During an interview with NBC News, the Compton native shared his thoughts on how his album impacted Mooney’s freshman class.

“I didn’t think I made it for a 16-year-old. So when a 16-year-old is intrigued by it, it lets me know how so far in advance as a society we actually are. And that inspired me on a whole ‘nother level,” he said. “A lot of times we’re put in these positions where we don’t know we’re role models. And just off the simple fact — whether we want to be a role model or not –- just the simple fact that we come from these Urban communities, these harsh worlds and we’re on TV and kids are looking at us, we’re already influence.”

“We influence their minds, we influence the way they talk, the way they dress,” he continued. “Every time I meet kids and they explain it to me what they got going on in life. I got to get out of my selfish ways of knowing that the music is not just about me anymore.”

Mooney seconded Kendrick, adding how he feels hip hop culture is a viable resource for teaching and learning in the classroom.

“One of the most important elements of hip hop is something called ‘knowledge of self,’ which a lot of hip hop historians will talk about. And that’s so educational,” Mooney told NBC News.

“That’s talking about identity. And so, it’s less of matter of using hip hop to trick kids into learning, but it’s more of an actual frame work for teaching and learning.”

Check out Kendrick Lamar’s visit to High Tech High School in the clip above.

Man Pops The Question To High School Sweetheart After Her Last Chemo Session

These high school sweethearts aren’t even married yet, and they already know the meaning of “in sickness and in health.”

Lucas D’Onofrio’s girlfriend Tamara was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in February. She recently finished her last of six chemotherapy sessions. If that wasn’t already cause for celebration, D’Onofrio made the day extra special by planning a surprise proposal for her at Boca Raton Regional Hospital.

He decorated the room with heart balloons, flameless candles, roses and photographs, and then got down on one knee to say the magic words, “Will you marry me?”

“I wanted it to be a symbol or closing the chapter of cancer in her life and opening a new chapter with our lives together,” D’Onofrio told BuzzFeed.

Afterwards, family and friends came by the hospital to celebrate the couple’s big news. Watch the video above, and fast-forward to the 2:00 mark to see the actual proposal.

Health, Nutrition Policies-Influence on Students’ School Participation

What picture comes to the Kenyan student’s mind on the thought of a boiled mixture of beans and maize (Githeri)? Perhaps a flattering one? With the author’s experienced background in educational planning, management and policy formulation and implementation, this book brings to the light the situation on implementation of selected health and nutrition policies in Kenyan schools. It’s hoped that the author’s recommendations may be useful at various levels in formulation and implementation of school health and nutrition policies

The Architecture of Barry Byrne: Taking the Prairie School to Europe

The Architecture of Barry Byrne: Taking the Prairie School to Europe

Barry Byrne (1883-1967) was a radical architect who sought basic principles as fervently as his mentor Frank Lloyd Wright and his inspiration Louis Sullivan, forging an individual style with taut planar skins enveloping modern space plans. In 1922 he designed the first modern Catholic church building, St. Thomas the Apostle in Chicago, and in 1924 he traveled to Europe where he met Mies, Mendelsohn, Oud, and other modernist architects there. He was the only Prairie School architect to build in Europe, designing the concrete Church of Christ the King, built in 1928-31 in Cork, Ireland. A dedicated modernist and progressive Catholic, Byrne concentrated for much of his career on Catholic churches and schools throughout North America, many of them now considered landmarks. This book charts the entire length of Byrne’s work, highlighting its distinctive features while discussing the cultural conditions that kept Byrne in the shadows of his more famous contemporaries. Illustrated by more than one hundred photographs and drawings, this biography explores the interplay of influences and impulses-individualism and communalism, modernism and tradition, pragmatism and faith-enduring throughout Byrne’s life and work.

This Pet Duck Is Beyond Psyched To See His Human Bestie Come Home From School

Friendship knows no species — just ask these two BFFs.

Jonny and Nibbles are the best of friends. Nibbles is an 11-month-old duck, and Jonny is a 10-year-old human. BuzzFeed recently spoke with Jonny’s mother, Jamie Toschi, who posted a video of her son’s feathered friend eagerly awaiting the arrival of his BFF. In the video, Nibbles sits shotgun in the car while he and Toschi wait for Jonny to get off the school bus. And Nibbles gets totally turnt, quacking up a storm, when he sees his bestie. “I knew he was going to start quaking when he saw Jonny get off the bus,” Toschi told the site.

Nibbles is a Rouen drake who has had a special bond with Jonny since his birth, Toschi wrote on YouTube. Jonny was best friends with Daisy, Nibble’s mom, who died a month after she laid 10 eggs. When the baby chicks hatched, Jonny was the first person Nibbles saw. “Jonny was devastated when Daisy died and he held on to Nibbles and never let go,” Toschi wrote.

This special moment blossomed into a wonderful friendship. Toschi chronicles the growing bond between the boy and his duck on a Facebook page, “The Adventures of Jonny and Nibbles.” There, she describes Nibbles as Jonny’s BFF (BIRD FRIEND FOREVER). The photos show the two friends playing outside, riding in the car, and just chilling and watching TV together at home. You know, best friend stuff.

Nibbles has helped Jonny to come out of his shell.” Toschi told BuzzFeed. ““This duck has definitely made an impact on his life.”

Vince Vaughn Wants Guns In Every American School

Actor Vince Vaughn, one of Hollywood’s few outspoken conservatives, believes it’s a Constitutional right to carry guns everywhere, including schools.

The star of the upcoming season of “True Detective” blamed school shootings on the lack of guns on campuses, in excerpts shared Monday from an interview with the British edition of GQ.

I support people having a gun in public full stop, not just in your home. We don’t have the right to bear arms because of burglars; we have the right to bear arms to resist the supreme power of a corrupt and abusive government. It’s not about duck hunting; it’s about the ability of the individual. It’s the same reason we have freedom of speech. It’s well known that the greatest defence against an intruder is the sound of a gun hammer being pulled back. All these gun shootings that have gone down in America since 1950, only one or maybe two have happened in non-gun-free zones. Take mass shootings. They’ve only happened in places that don’t allow guns. These people are sick in the head and are going to kill innocent people. They are looking to slaughter defenceless human beings. They do not want confrontation. In all of our schools it is illegal to have guns on campus, so again and again these guys go and shoot up these f***ing schools because they know there are no guns there. They are monsters killing six-year-olds.

Sounding a wee bit like a conspiracy theorist, Vaughn later said that elites secretly stock weapons in the schools that their children attend.

You think the politicians that run my country and your country don’t have guns in the schools their kids go to? They do. And we should be allowed the same rights. Banning guns is like banning forks in an attempt to stop making people fat. Taking away guns, taking away drugs, the booze, it won’t rid the world of criminality.

This is not first time Vaughn has spoken out about gun control. In a February interview with Playboy, he explained why he owns a firearm.

“I do [own a gun], yeah,” he said. “I believe in the right to defend yourself if need be. Hopefully you’re never in that situation, but I think you’re fairly naive to believe there will never be a cause for self-defense.”

The self-described libertarian also spoke out against the Obama administration and affirmative action in that interview while supporting same-sex marriage and legalizing drugs.

Korean American Artist Nam June Paik Inspires Elementary School Students

They filed in, one by one, a long line of fourth- and fifth-grade students, quiet and well-behaved until they crossed the threshold of the Asia Society gallery. And then, one by one, they gasped, cried out, and– in the case of one young boy– jumped and nearly fell on landing. “Oh, man!” said one of the students. “Check out my robot!”

A months-long project culminated May 19 when children from four New York City public schools saw their own work on the walls and the gallery floors of a major cultural institution. Each fall, Asia Society invites students and teachers to a major exhibition at the museum, then works in partnership with Studio in a School to help the students craft their own art inspired by the show. This year marked the 22nd year of the program, and the original exhibition featured the work of technology-obsessed contemporary Korean American artist Nam June Paik, whose work with robots and televisions starting in the 1960s and 1970s presaged many social and technological advances of the 21st century. The students from P.S. 297 in Brooklyn, P.S. 75 in Manhattan, and P.S. 87 and P.S. 182 in the Bronx used materials and concepts that the late Korean American artist would have recognized to create robotic suit jackets; a “pet” made from the chassis of a vacuum cleaner; a tree showing the evolution of the telephone; and other imaginative works.

“I’m famous,” said one young boy as adults snapped photos of him and the robot he had helped design.

Among those on hand for the opening was Agnes Gund, President Emerita of the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), long-time arts patron and founder and chair of Studio in a School. In the Asia Society auditorium prior to the gallery tour, Gund congratulated “these brilliant young artists” for their creativity and skill. She praised the “thoughtful collaboration” among Studio in a School, the schools’ teachers and principals, and Asia Society, and gave special thanks to Nancy Blume, head of arts education at Asia Society.

Gund singled out the piece Baby from the series Robot Family Sculptures, the creation of five boys from P.S. 75 in Manhattan. The piece was built with, among other materials, a basketball for a body, a videocamera lens hood for its mouth and energy-efficient light bulbs for hands.

“I think it’s a terrific work of art,” Gund said, “and I happen to have an interest in basketball.” She explained, to laughter from the students, that she was a fan of the Cleveland Cavaliers and had watched their win over the Atlanta Hawks the previous night.

“We fought a lot about how to make it great,” said Isaac, one of the students who designed Baby. “I think Mr. Nam June Paik would have liked it.”

Just a few feet away from Baby lay Dog, also part of the Robot Family Sculptures series and a creation of Chloe and Stephanie from P.S. 75 in Manhattan. This piece, it turns out, had been inspired by something missing from Asia Society’s Nam June Paik show.

“There were robot moms and dads but no pets, no animals,” Chloe said. “So this is kind of based on his art, but kind of our own idea, too.”

The students’ art will be on display at Asia Society Museum until July 19 in an exhibition titled Inspired by Nam June Paik: Becoming Robot. The show and this partnership with Studio in a School is one of the coolest things we do, and just as much a part of our mission as the visits of Asian leaders to our stage. The idea behind both is the same — building bridges of understanding between the people of Asia and the U.S.

“You are the youngest artists to exhibit at the Asia Society Museum,” Peggy Loar, Asia Society’s Interim Museum Director, told the children. “And this is a museum where some of the artists were born three thousand years ago.” Loar spoke of the power of a young person’s creativity and working as a team. Before the children left, she invited them to return with their families and receive free admission to see the exhibition and share their accomplishments with their loved ones. “Just come in,” she said, “and say you are one of the artists featured in Inspired by Nam June Paik.”

John Waters To Receive Honorary Degree From Rhode Island School Of Design

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — When the Rhode Island School of Design offered iconic filmmaker John Waters an honorary degree, he was surprised. After all, he got thrown out of every school he ever went to.

Known for quirky films that push the boundaries of good taste, including 1972’s outrageous cult classic “Pink Flamingos,” Waters is the keynote speaker at the prestigious art school’s commencement next weekend.

Waters will also receive an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree; recipients are chosen by the RISD community, and nominations are reviewed by a committee of students, faculty and staff.

“I don’t even know if I got a high school diploma. It’s very peculiar. I feel very flattered,” said Waters, who attended New York University briefly in the 1960s before getting kicked out for smoking marijuana on campus. “I feel like the scarecrow in the ‘Wizard of Oz’ when they give him a brain.”

RISD’s 2015 Honorary Degree Committee cited Waters’ body of films as an “enduring inspiration for RISD students seeking to break boundaries, challenge conventions, and define an expressive style,” said RISD President Rosanne Somerson.

“In the words of one nominator, he ’embodies the RISD ‘tude galore’,” Somerson said.

Waters will share a stage with three members of the band Talking Heads — two are RISD alumni — and New Yorker staff writer Adam Gopnik.

Waters has written and directed more than a dozen films over his decades-long career, many of them low-budget movies featuring a cadre of unconventional characters, including drag queen Divine, Waters’ longtime friend and muse. Waters saw mainstream success with 1988’s “Hairspray,” another cult classic that was adapted into a Broadway musical in 2002. He is also a published author and photographer.

“I shouldn’t have been in school. You go to school to figure out what you wanted to do. I knew what I wanted to do,” Waters said. “I wish I had gone to RISD. They would have encouraged my ideas. I could have made ‘Pink Flamingos.'”

Waters does more writing these days than filmmaking: The paperback of his 2014 memoir “Carsick: John Waters Hitchhikes Across America” debuts this month. Waters said he was inspired to hitchhike from his native Baltimore to San Francisco because his life is so scheduled and controlled.

“My inspiration has always been the same, which is human behavior I can’t understand, which is always my interest, always has been,” Waters said.

The filmmaker is looking forward to accepting his honorary degree, “Without irony, for one of the few times in my life.”

Joe Plumeri Tells New York Law School Grads: ‘Go Play In Traffic’

Businessman Joe Plumeri, who currently serves as vice chairman of the First Data Board of Directors, gave the commencement address at New York Law School on Tuesday. He dropped out of New York Law School in the 1960s to pursue a job on Wall Street but was awarded an honorary degree this week.

In his energetic speech, Plumeri said graduates must have commitment, purpose and vision in order to have success. He encouraged graduates to commit fully to whatever they wanted to do, using the analogy that Vikings burned their ships when they landed at a place they wanted to conquer. But without purpose, Plumeri said, they won’t succeed.

“The purpose has got to be genuine concern for what you do and the people you do it for,” he said.

Plumeri told the graduates to “go play in traffic” to find their vision.

“Now you’re saying, ‘What’s wrong with the guy? He wants me to go get hit by a car!'” Plumeri said. “That’s not what I want you to do. What I want you to do is engage.”

He further explained that “playing in traffic” is all about going out there and exploring your vision, making blunders and taking risks.

“Go out, play in traffic,” he said. “Something’s gonna happen eventually.”

Obedience School

Obedience School

Bryley Janison has an attitude problem. She wastes her husband Gavin’s money, whizzes plates at his head and won’t give him the tiniest bit of satisfaction in bed. Gavin’s boss Roth has the answer. Bryley must be brought to heel, stripped of her clothing, freedom and dignity and remade into a proper wife. He has just the place – a secret school where uppity females are trained like dogs to serve the absolute pleasure of their masters. Bryley is sent against her will, and while on her way to the school, she learns that her new purpose in life is to ‘get men off’. She begins her schooling along with a spoiled young socialite, renamed Brat and a snobby would-be divorcee whom the male Warders call Barbie. The three are stripped and thrown naked into a stinking cell after being abused and humiliated by several guards. They are told they must submit like animals, but Bryley soon finds herself singled out by the school’s mysterious head man, the handsome Royce. He offers to watch over her, but she soon finds he may have a higher price than she can afford. She struggles to keep her identity, even while feeling things for Royce that may make her forget her marriage vows. Gavin meanwhile has struggles of his own, as his boss seeks to prepare him as a slave owner by letting him have his way with Allison, his beautiful blonde pet-wife.

Kanye West Receives Honorary Doctorate From School Of The Art Institute Of Chicago

Kanye West might be a college dropout, but now he has an advanced degree.

The rapper received an honorary doctorate from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) Monday for his “transformative, genre-defying work.” In his acceptance speech, he described what the honor means to him.

“This honor is gonna make your lives easier,” he said. “Two reasons: You don’t have to defend me as much and I’m going to make all of our lives easier. And it’s these Floyd Mayweather belts that are needed to prove what I’ve been saying my entire life. Whether it’s the cosign of Paul McCartney grabbing me and saying, ‘It’s okay he doesn’t bite white people.’ Or The New York Times cover. Or the Time ‘Most Influential’ cover. And now, a doctorate at the Art Institute of Chicago.”

“When I was giving a lecture at Oxford,” he continued, “I brought up this school because when I went on that mission to create in other spaces — apparel, film, performance — it would have been easier if I could have said I had a degree at the Art Institute of Chicago.”

Lisa Wainwright, dean of faculty and vice president of academic administration at SAIC, told the Los Angeles Times that it had decided to give West the honorary degree after he publicly mentioned the school.

“I read it and thought, ‘Wow, this is a fantastic moment.’ Here is this major figure in the cultural landscape promoting art school, this guy from Chicago saying art school is cool. So we thought, ‘This man deserves an honorary doctorate from us!’ He should have gone here.”

Kim Kardashian, who is currently in Brazil on business, commemorated her husband’s milestone with an Instagram post.

Dr. Kanye West!!!!!!! I’m so proud of you baby & I know your mom would be so proud too!!!!

West attended Chicago’s American Academy of Art for one semester on a partial scholarship before transferring to Chicago State University, where his mother, Donda West, was head of the English Department, according to Rolling Stone. After one semester there, he dropped out to pursue his music career. And the rest is history.

A Gay Dad Sounds Off On The School That Canceled ‘And Then Came Tango’ Play

By Rob Watson | The Next Family

There was a significant hearing this week on Tuesday about same sex relationships and whether to ban them. You likely missed this one because you were focused on that OTHER hearing in front of the Supreme Court, the one on whether all states in the union should perform and recognize same sex marriages.

No, this hearing was smaller, with less attention and could have been held in what might be described as a wholly alternative universe.

This hearing was in front of a school board in Catheys Valley, Mariposa County, California. It was held in a place where same sex marriage legally exists without question.

Unlike the Supreme Court, which was surrounded by folks waving banners of equality, tolerance and the love that creates families, this hearing was full of people who wanted none of that and took offense against anyone who did not look and act like them.

The case before the school board was this: the Sierra Charter Foothill School was scheduled to host a performance of the play, “And Then Came Tango,” based on the true story of two male penguins who hatched and orphaned egg and raised the chick as their own. New York Theater Now describes “Tango” as: “Emily Freeman’s timely play for young audiences, shares the tale of six chinstrap penguins at the Central Park Zoo — and the people who care for them. More specifically and touchingly, Freeman zeroes in on Roy and Silo, two males who form a penguin bond akin to their male-female-paired peers, engaging in mating rituals and trying to hatch a rock. Even more touchingly, Lily, the young Junior Keeper, convinces Walter, the zookeeper in charge of the exhibit, to let Silo and Roy incubate an orphaned egg — which they do to loving fruition.”

The booking of the play had been in place for a year with the Fresno State Theater Troupe. The school regretted having missed out on the previous year’s performance of “The Velveteen Rabbit,” so put in their reservation early to get on the schedule for “Tango.”

Once the play’s synopsis was sent to them, the administration wretched over what they perceived as a “gay theme.” They immediately made attendance voluntary and sent out “warnings” to all their parents. This effort was not enough for many in the community who demanded that the ability to opt out was not enough. They insisted that the school needed to cancel the production all together or they would boycott it for the day.

The force of the vitriolic response shocked the administrators who then threw the decision of the play’s fate to the school board. Meanwhile, some of the students who wanted to see the play began passing out rainbow ribbon bracelets out to those willing to wear them. This “radical” action was also quickly shut down by the administration. The school leaders took on a “road theater” of their own and went into classes to perform skits. Their theme was about how trying to inspire acceptance of others was actually a divisive act. I am not sure what the reviews of the “Divisive Act” skits were, but in any case, they successfully shut down the distribution of rainbow ribbon bracelets and the “perpetrators” apologized.

At the same time the first and second graders were putting the final touches to their creative writing and a story called “Hannah’s Adventure” which was headed to a writing festival in Meced. Hannah was undoubtedly “safe” because she apparently did not have two moms. So, full steam ahead.

Mariposa County life for “And Then Came Tango” was not so fortuitous. The school board voted conclusively to end its run long before it got started.

While the first and second graders of Sierra Charter Foothill wrote their piece, I wrote one of my own. Here is my open letter to the school and the community it serves.

Dear Sierra Charter Foothill School Community,

I was horrified to read of your recent actions around the play called “And Then Came Tango,” which depicted two penguins who loved each other and then saved, hatched and nurtured an orphaned egg. Your principal stated that the play “does cross the line for what parents think is appropriate for school.”

At the school board meeting, parents made comments like “It’s about two men. They raise a baby and I don’t agree with that.” Your community members described the family image in “Tango” as “social engineering” and “promoting” homosexuality. The consensus was “I want to teach my kids what I believe in my home that’s it.”

The family depicted in “And Then Came Tango” is mine.

We are not penguins, and my sons were not hatched, but aside from those set-decorating changes, it is us. My oldest son was born six weeks prematurely to a heroin-addicted mother. My younger son was found abandoned by his drug-addicted mother in a trailer where he had been uncared for two days. My spouse and I had so much love between us that we wanted to extend it further. We adopted these two babies who needed us.

The love I have for my sons is the most profound I have ever known.

That is our story, and it is reflected in the factual story of the penguins in the play. The penguin real life story occurred in 1999 at the Central Park Zoo, and they met with the same intolerant attitude that your community is exhibiting. Homophobic people rose up and demanded that the penguin family be broken apart. They felt what had happened naturally was somehow “sending the wrong message.”

The “Tango” story is about love. My family’s story is about love. We are people, we are not ideas or theories for you to “agree” or “disagree” with. My sons are not experiments nor are they part of some agenda to “promote” a brand of sexuality. I would never disrespect your children by characterizing them as “talking points of heterosexual sex acts” and I expect the common decency from you to not classify my sons similarly.

Just for the record, my family is not alone. There are thousands like us in the state of California. We are your neighbors. Just like the orphaned egg in the story, there are also thousands of kids who have been abused or neglected in our state. A Cambridge study found that there is only one parental profile family that chooses to create a family using foster care/adoption as its first choice — that profile is a two male led household.

My sons are both wonderful boys — bright, charming, caring — and have both been taught to be good citizens in their school community. Even though it is clear that they would not be welcome, your school would be fortunate to have two such as them within it.

All your kids are going to come to school and share with others about how they came to be in their families, LGBT kids do the same. My sons, like other kids from differing family structures, fully grasp the concept of mutual respect between families. It is the principle where we listen to each other and find common ground, not a focus on our differences.

It is a concept that you have just voted down. It is a lesson you have yet to learn.

As for “Tango,” theater arts are meant to illustrate, illuminate and shake their audience from pre-conceived notions and feelings. This play was brought to you not so you can judge and censor it, or the families like mine that it represents, but so you can watch and grow from finding out about us. It asks you to consider that a family is driven more from the hearts of its members than it is from their genitals.

Last year, your school was upset that it missed out on the road tour of a production of the classic “The Velveteen Rabbit.” I wonder if you would have caught the message of that play and how it too affirms the creation of families such as mine. I am sorry you did not see it, as you might have taken a glimpse of what it means to be a “real” family. You would have heard this:

“Real isn’t how you are made,” said the Skin Horse. “It’s a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real…It doesn’t happen all at once…You become. It takes a long time. That’s why it doesn’t happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are Real you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.”

Tango was not seeking your approval, it was a gift for you so that you could start to see things more broadly and appreciate the diversity in this world. It was ready to show you what is truly real, something like my family.

By your actions, you have shut down a great educational opportunity.

That opportunity was not for your kids, it was for you.

Zac Posen Used To Style Lena Dunham’s Hair On Their Commute To School

Before Zac Posen was outfitting Lena Dunham in a canary yellow gown for the 2014 Golden Globes, he was holding her hand on New York City public transportation as her babysitter.

“Oh Boy. I must’ve been like 17 or 18 and it was my high school job to take her on the train to school we went to. She was younger than I was and we’d take the subway,” the fashion designer recalled in a Thursday conversation with HuffPost Live.

But the fun hardly stopped there. Posen continued:

I’d pick her up and I’d re-do her hair. That’s what I’d do. I’d re-do her hair to go on the train. I was dressing quite outrageously at the time. I was trying to dress to understand how people react to [clothes]… I’d wear ivy in my hair, platform sneakers. We had fun.

The two would converse about “popular events,” as well, he recounted.

“We’d make up stories on the subway. I’m sure there was like, funny dances on the poles of the subway. We had a blast.”

Dan Williams, Oklahoma Teen, Surprises All 1,076 Girls At His School With Valentine’s Day Gifts

Wanting every girl at his high school to feel loved on Valentine’s Day, one big-hearted Oklahoma teen decided to surprise all of them with cards and candy this year — a total of 1,076 girls.

According to KFOR, Dan Williams, a student at Edmond High School in Edmond, Oklahoma, had to work all summer to raise enough money for the surprise gifts. “To know that someone cares about them, that’s the best feeling in the world I think,” he told the news outlet.

(Story continues below)

Though Williams intended the gifts to be anonymous, he was reportedly unable to keep his identity a secret for long.

He’s since won the praise of his classmates — and the school itself.

On Valentine’s Day, Edmond High School, whose mascot is a bulldog, honored the young man with this tweet:

Dan Williams: You’re a champ.

Principal Loses Job Over Misspelled School Sign

When a New Jersey public school principal was reassigned last week, the writing was on the wall.

Actually, it was on the school sign — which was misspelled at least twice.

Antoinette Young, the principal of Public School Number 20 in Paterson, New Jersey, was demoted to a vice principal position at another school after parents discovered a sign in front of the school’s side entrance had two serious spelling errors that went unnoticed for more than a week.

December was misspelled as “Dicember” and reports was spelled incorrectly as “reepor.” The number ‘1’ was also placed backwards on the sign, CBS New York reports.

The typo-riddled sign was up for days before school board member Corey Teague posted photos on social media.

“If this is how the administration takes care of signage how can we expect the students to do better? We must be held to a higher standard,” Teague wrote in an email accompanying the photos, NorthJersey.com reports.

Officials said a custodian was responsible for the sign’s spelling errors and added that the sign was placed near an entrance not normally used by staff, according to NJ.com.

After Teague’s photo of the misspelled school sign went viral, officials reassigned Young to a vice principal position at another school.

Boris Simon, the school’s current vice principal, will serve as principal in the interim.

District officials would not confirm the botched sign was the sole reason for the demotion.

Young had been principal at the 465-student school less than two years and was already under a “Corrective Action Plan” designed to address shortcomings in her performance, according to the New York Daily News.
