Italian Fashion Chamber Shows Solidarity With China

LOVING CHINA: As the coronavirus outbreak is trapping Chinese designers and fashion folks in the country, the Italian Camera della Moda officially kicked off Milan Fashion Week on Tuesday night with the “China, we are with you” initiative showing the local fashion world’s solidarity with the affected country.
As reported, the project aims to involve members of the Chinese fashion community through live-streaming of the shows on Tencent-owned platforms, including WeChat, dedicated social media platforms, including a brand new Weibo account, and the creation of ad-hoc videos, backstage content and interviews enabling buyers and designers to partake remotely in the fashion experience.
“This initiative was created to share a message of closeness, trust and strength. In a moment of crisis the fashion world has to stay united and build bridges and not walls. We decided to use technology to bring the experience of Milan Fashion Week to the Chinese world,” said Carlo Capasa, president of the Italian fashion chamber.
Further stressing its commitment, the association struck a deal with Chic Group, a real estate developer, financial analyst and brand management consultancy, which has been supporting Chinese designers through its Fashion Town in Xi’an and its network of multibrand stores called Il Parco.

Dressier Aesthetic Finds Fans at New York Men’s Trade Shows

It’s no secret that department stores are having a tough time of it as online retailers continue to chisel away at their business. In 2019, sales in that channel dropped 5.5 percent, according to the Census Bureau, on top of a 1.2 percent decline in 2018.
The climate for independent specialty stores is not much better, but those who have managed to survive up to this point have figured out a formula for success. It revolves around offering personal service and innovative product to update and modernize men’s wardrobes. Because most specialty merchants also count tailored clothing as the traditional strength of their business, the shift away from streetwear and back to a more dressed-up aesthetic is also lifting their spirits — and their sales.
As a result, stores shopping the New York men’s market this week were buying suits, sport coats and outerwear with technical properties such as stretch and stain-resistance as well as sweaters and shirts that provided comfort but still looked professional.
“The only thing we have to compete with is service and the personal touch,” said Ted Silver, owner of Weiss & Goldring in Alexandria, La. That translates into a “mixture of dress with casual” looks, he said. He

Milan Day One: More Brands Say Bye to Coed Shows, Tout Return of Suit

MILAN — After a few ho-hum seasons in Milan, mainly dented by a rush of coed shows scheduled during the women’s collections, the pendulum is swinging back to a fuller and more international Men’s Fashion Week. Gucci has given the city a welcome boost, returning with a show scheduled on the last day, Jan. 14, after several seasons of coed shows.
“At the start of this new decade and this next chapter for Gucci, we are excited to return to Milan Men’s Fashion Week, joining the other leading brands present to underline Milan’s prestige and influence on the world stage,” Marco Bizzarri, president and chief executive officer of Gucci, told WWD. “Milan Fashion Week is a pivotal event in the fashion world’s calendar as it also represents the fundamental role that Italy plays in the luxury sector, both in terms of creativity and manufacturing. The men’s category is now more vibrant than ever before as men have become more confident in expressing themselves through fashion. Alessandro [Michele] has played a significant part in this evolution through his vision and collections over the last five years and will undoubtedly continue to do so in 2020 and beyond.”

JFK Airport Not Done With Fashion Shows Yet

With previous destinations including the Eiffel Tower and Seine River in Paris, the Hoover Dam and a New York City skyline show, model-turned-show-producer Jessica Minh Anh, in partnership with DHL Express, will present her next fashion show at JFK.
The next rendition of her “Fashion x Sustainability Series” is coming to the John F. Kennedy Gateway in February, but Minh Anh wouldn’t be the first to select JFK as an elixir for fashion’s in-crowd, trends and innovative designs. Under creative director Nicolas Ghesquière, Louis Vuitton showed its 2020 resort collection at the TWA Hotel at New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport in May.
DHL is not an unlikely partner to Minh Anh, as just this August, the logistics company sponsored the DHL Logistics in Fashion award with the CFDA. This was the second year in a row.
She maintains the goal to highlight “the modern upcycling and delivery process in a creative way.”
“From optimizing transport routes and rolling out alternative fuel vehicles, to operating energy efficiency warehouses, DHL is reducing transport-related CO2 emissions,” said Minh Anh in a press statement.
The official list of designer participants is to be announced, but meanwhile, Minh Anh can be seen sporting haute couture looks from

Fashion East to Mix Men’s, Women’s Shows

MIXING IT UP: Fashion East, a London platform for emerging talent, plans to go coed, starting with London Fashion Week in February.
The decision to unite men’s wear and women’s wear stems from the designers themselves, who have been staging all-gender shows, according to the not-for-profit organization.
“At Fashion East, we’ve never been concerned with standard gender rules on the catwalk, so it is natural for us, and for the progressive designers we support, to make this format switch up at the start of our 20th year,” said Lulu Kennedy, founder and director of Fashion East.
“This group of designers perfectly represents the talent, freedom and community we are so proud to work with.”
Brands at the upcoming showcase will include Ancuta Sarca, the Romanian-born, London-based footwear designer who debuted last season with upcycled sneaker/slingback or backless hybrid shoes. She will work with Nike for her showcase.
Gareth Wrighton will once again take part in Fashion East with a collection called “Three Protests — An American Trilogy.” In his previous work, the Central Saint Martins Graduate has used humor, narrative and mixed media to take on issues around global garment production.

That's Apple's favorite time to push out software updates, so it's not surprising they'd pick the same time to launch their original TV efforts.

Oddly, while the story for See is also marked for 1PM ET, other shows like For All Mankind and Dickinson have a countdown set for 3 PM. We'll see if they all launch at once or are just staggered, but some people are already able to access the service on their Apple devices.

MaxMara, Allure Celebrate Shonda Rhimes Shows

Fall, it seems, has turned into and awards season for those behind-the-scenes for television and movies, as InStyle, The Hollywood Reporter, and Variety and WWD have all inaugurated events this year. Allure was the latest to do so, partnering with MaxMara on Saturday night at its Rodeo Drive store to honor the hair, makeup and wardrobe teams behind Shonda Rhimes’ hit shows. Kerry Washington, Tony Goldwyn, Ellen Pompeo, Darby Stanchfield, Liza Weil, Scott Foley and Bellamy Young were among the stars of “Scandal,” “Grey’s Anatomy” and “How to Get Away With Murder” who turned out.
Upon Rhimes’ arrival, Washington danced and chanted, “Shonda, Shonda.”
“Oh, there goes my hairstylist,” said “Grey’s Anatomy” actress Camilla Luddington. “We’re talking about you,” she said, pointing to Melanie Smith.
“Scandal” actress Katie Lowes perhaps picked the wrong time to debut a new hair look.
“I walked in and Shonda was like, ‘What the hell? What did you do?’” she said of her  faux bob. “I was like, ‘No, no, no, I didn’t cut it. I didn’t cut it.’ It’s just tucked up underneath. When you want to go through a major look change you’ve got to talk to Shonda about it for your character.”

Trend-Right Men’s Lines From the Las Vegas Trade Shows

The men’s market is in a relaxed mood.
With sales picking up in the second half and some popular items for fall already emerging, retailers shopping the trade shows in Las Vegas were feeling little stress.
Adding to the optimism were the spring fashion trends of colorful swimwear, comfortable ath-leisurewear and nautical influences in everything from outerwear to accessories. The marriage of function and fashion was also a key market mover, with merchants embracing utilitarian detailing in garments that also sported performance attributes.

“Men’s fashion moves at a glacial pace,” said Patty Leto, senior vice president of merchandising for the Doneger Group. But that pace is quickening as the male consumers’ desire for fashion heats up, she added. Driving the men’s wear acceleration, she said, was the influence of beachwear, ath-leisure and the continued demand for performance.
Key volume drivers for the season, according to the Doneger team, include graphic Ts, printed tank tops, unconstructed sport coats, flat-front shorts, joggers, true activewear and printed swimwear.
Tommy Fazio, president of Project, said the two biggest categories at this market were swimwear and the “whole California lifestyle. Those are the big growth opportunities.”

Celebrating 20 Years, SITE Santa Fe Shows New Commissions and Collaborations

Celebrating 20 Years: SITE Santa Fe’s Collaborative Spirit

A significant anniversary invites a retrospective view, and for SITE Santa Fe’s 20th, the institution is doing just that, in a yearlong series of exhibitions featuring artists who have presented major works at SITE in the past. But for this 20th-anniversary celebration, SITE is not only looking back at its own history, or reprising past projects, rather refreshingly the exhibits that comprise “SITE 20 Years/20 Shows” take the form of new work, commissions, and collaborations.

Ann Hamilton, The common SENSE (detail), 2014-2015. Courtesy of the artist.

SITE Santa Fe opened in 1995 with its first International Biennial: Longing and Belonging: From the Faraway Nearby, curated by Bruce Ferguson, and has since produced eight biennials, and over 80 exhibitions, helping to launch or galvanize the careers of numerous curators and artists. The notion of reconnecting with artists who have contributed to the institution’s history, taking a look at then and now, exemplifies SITE’s mission to form strong bonds with the international art community while cultivating deep roots within the community of Santa Fe and the wider Southwest region.

Amy Cutler, Cautionary Trail, 2005. Courtesy of the artist and Leslie Tonkonow Artworks + Projects, New York.

Presented in three installments, over spring, summer and fall, “SITE 20 Years/20 Shows” first opened in March with work by Gregory Crewdson, Deborah Grant, Roxy Paine, Mary Reid Kelley with Patrick Kelley, Rose B. Simpson, and Jessica Stockholder. The fall installment, opening October 23, will feature installations by Terry Allen, Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller, Wangechi Mutu with Edgar Arceneaux, and Susan Silton with The Crowing Hens. The summer exhibition of “SITE 20 Years/20 Shows” is currently on view, until October 4, with installations and collaborations by Ann Hamilton, Janine Antoni with choreographer Stephen Petronio, Amy Cutler with musician Emily Wells and hairdresser Adriana Papaleo, Harmony Hammond with artist Francis Cape, and Dario Robleto with historian Patrick Feaster and Lance Ledbetter of Dust-to-Digital Records. While the wall texts throughout the show acknowledge the contributions of each of the artists to SITE Santa Fe’s exhibitions of the past–Ann Hamilton, for instance, showed in the first Biennial and Janine Antoni showed a major solo show at SITE in 2002–the focus rests on the artists’ current practices.

Dario Robleto, The Pulse Armed With a Pen (An Unknown History of the Human Heartbeat), 2014. Courtesy the artist and Inman Gallery, Houston. Photo: Paul Hester, The Menil Collection.

The installations in the current configuration of “SITE 20 Years/20 Shows” exhibit few connections between them, with each occupying its own discrete room in the gallery. But if there is one conceptual thread running throughout, it is the notion of collaboration–collaboration among artists, between artists and institutions, artists and choreographers, musicians, historians, and so on. A successful collaborative effort can achieve results that a single artist couldn’t produce on her own, a kind of synergistic effect that provides new contexts and new meanings to an artist’s work. In an unsuccessful collaboration, on the other hand, compromises become more apparent than cooperation, resulting in a situation where one person’s vision might supersede another to the detriment of the whole artwork. The wide range of artistic collaboration, both successful and unsuccessful, can be found in SITE Santa Fe’s current exhibition.

Janine Antoni and Stephen Petronio, Honey Baby, 2013. Copyright Janine Antoni and Stephen Petronio; Courtesy of the artists and Luhring Augustine, New York.

Janine Antoni’s collaboration with the choreographer Stephen Petronio, for instance, sheds new light on Antoni’s practice with regard to the grotesque and expressive potential of the human body–in this case a male dancer’s lithe form, emulating the movements of the body in utero–in a somewhat disturbing but entrancing video. And Dario Robleto’s collaboration with sound historians Patrick Feaster and Lance Ledbetter results in a series of small vinyl albums–recordings of the human heart and early gospel spirituals–with extensive liner notes that convey a historical depth and artistic sensibility (despite the somewhat twee aesthetic), enhancing our apprehension of these early recordings visually, textually, and sonically.

Harmony Hammond and Francis Cape, Angle of Repose, 2015, installation view. Courtesy of the artists and SITE Santa Fe. Photo: Eric Swanson.

The collaborative installation by painter Harmony Hammond and sculptor Francis Cape, Angle of Repose (2015), on the other hand, is less apparent as a collaboration at all. Comprised of one of Hammond’s layered monochrome paintings leaning against a wall and a collection of re-made handcrafted furniture by Cape, the two works are somewhat independent of each other, but their proximity yields a new conversation between the works. Their pairing seems more like a very astute curatorial choice, rather than a true collaboration that results in one unified work.

Amy Cutler, installation view, 2015. Courtesy of the artist and SITE Santa Fe. Photo: Eric Swanson.

While Hammond and Cape’s collaboration demonstrates restraint and subtlety, Amy Cutler’s installation commits the sin of sensorial overload. Created with musician Emily Wells and hairdresser Adriana Papaleo, the installation sets out to devise a three-dimensional version of one of Cutler’s surreal paintings. Braided hair intertwined between aspen logs that form a primitive hut in the center of the gallery, lit from within, houses bundled lumps of more hair. An eerie soundtrack of breathing permeates the dark atmosphere. The ambience is meticulously crafted, but the literalness of such a proposal deprives the viewer of the sense of imagination and wonderment one can experience in the scenes of Cutler’s strange and richly detailed paintings.

Ann Hamilton, The common SENSE, 2014-2015, installation view, SITE Santa Fe, 2015. Courtesy of the artist. Photo: Eric Swanson.

At turns impressive, delightful, and poignant, Ann Hamilton’s installation is one of the most richly rewarding of the show. Created in cooperation with the University of Washington’s Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture’s Ornithology collection, the common SENSE · the animals (2014-2015) is comprised of digital scans of bird and animal specimens taken from the collection, printed on stacks of newsprint, and presented salon style across the whole room. Invited to tear off sheets of the newsprint and take some of the pictures home, viewers are confronted with the consequences of their impulse to consume–as each sheet is torn away, the installation is lessened, pointing to the ultimate finitude of natural resources. In the wake of the tragedy of Cecil the lion in Zimbabwe, Hamilton’s installation becomes all the more moving.

Marie Watt, installation view, 2015. Courtesy of the artist and SITE Santa Fe. Photo: Eric Swanson.

The emphasis on collaboration at SITE Santa Fe is not a passing fancy, or just relevant to this particular exhibition, but rather is something that runs deep within the institution’s programming and curatorial mission. This is evidenced in a concurrent exhibition at the museum, Unsuspected Possibilities, supported by a Robert Rauschenberg Foundation Artistic Innovation and Collaboration Grant, featuring works by Marie Watt, Leonardo Drew, and Sarah Oppenheimer. Marie Watt’s installation in particular perfectly and beautifully illustrates SITE Santa Fe’s continued commitment to collaborative processes and community engagement. The artist, who is of Iroquois descent, involved local Santa Fe students and community members to help embroider designs on fragments of Pendleton blankets, which were then assembled into magnificent constructions, and hung like an advancing regiment through the gallery space. It’s a breathtaking installation, made all the more impressive knowing the many hands that touched it.

See All The Epic Orgies From Your Favorite TV Shows (NSFW)

On Sunday night, “True Detective” had one of the most upscale, creepiest orgies shown on the small screen when Rachel McAdams’ Ani went undercover. But that may make you wonder, have there been other orgies depicted on TV shows? Why yes, of course!

To refresh your memory, The Huffington Post found all the orgy scenes we could (our jobs are tough) and made one big orgy of an orgy video. There’s goofy orgies, like that “Eyes Wide Shut” spoof from “It’s Always Sunny,” there’s Jerry Seinfeld rambling about how he’s not ready to be “an orgy guy,” and then of course there’s the best, and most diverse, sex-capade in the history of TV orgies in Netflix’s “Sense8.” Check out the very NSFW video to get your orgy fix.

Buzz Aldrin Dances With John Travolta, Shows Off Some Out-Of-This World Moves

When you’ve done the moon walk for real, the last thing you need is dancing lessons. But space legend Buzz Aldrin couldn’t resist picking up a few pointers from actor John Travolta.

The two showed off their smooth moves at an event held Saturday night at Kennedy Space Center in Florida to celebrate the kickoff of the Apollo astronaut’s ShareSpace Foundation, a charity aimed at boosting science literacy in kids by incorporating arts into science education.

“I thought I held my own,” Aldrin wrote on a Facebook post. “What do you think?”

Speaking at the event, which was hosted by actor Seth Green, Travolta praised the Apollo astronaut.

“To be here at the Kennedy Space Center, under a Saturn V rocket with an American hero like Buzz Aldrin, it’s just quite a privilege,” Travolta said, according to Florida Today.

He added:

“To start a nonprofit is probably one of the most selfless things a person can do. There is no personal monetary gain from it, it’s a lot of extra work and effort. It’s not an easy task. But, yet, here’s this legend who’s doing just that.”

Monday is the 46th anniversary of the lunar landing in which Neil Armstrong and Aldrin became the first and second humans, respectively, to set foot on the moon.

Ron Diamond’s Animation Show of Shows Coming to Comic-Con, Getting Ready for Nationwide Debut

Toon fans rejoice! The Animation Show of Shows will soon be coming to a theater near you.

Thanks to a successful Kickstarter, this animation industry favorite will now transition from being an insider-only exclusive to becoming a program that film fans around the world can participate in and enjoy.

2015-07-02-1435865026-7316782-Diamond2.jpg

For those of you who don’t know: The Animation Show of Shows has long been Ron Diamond‘s baby. For the past 16 years, this veteran animation producer has circled the globe seeking out the very best new animated short films. Which sounds like it might be a fun way for a cinema fan to spend their time, but is actually a quite challenging task.

“Just recently, I sat through a screening of over 200 student films. All because I was looking for those one or two short animated films that I might consider adding to the line-up on my next Animation Show of Shows,” Ron explained during a recent phone interview.

And previously — once Diamond has selected all of that year’s animated gems — he’d then truck this feature-length compilation to animation studios like Disney, Pixar and Blue Sky. All with the hope that — by exposing these creatives to what the next generation of animators was up to — he’d then inspire these folks to explore unexpected ideas.”

2015-07-02-1435865079-1292332-Diamond3.jpg

“And while I don’t mean to brag, I think that I’ve got a pretty good eye for this stuff. 29 of the films that I’ve showcased in previous Animation Show of Shows have gone on to get Academy Award nominations. And 9 of those animated short films then went on to win the Oscar,” Ron continued.

But after 16 years of annually assembling this great collection of animated short films which was then meant to educate and inspire industry insiders, Diamond was looking to broaden his horizons. He wanted the general public to now be able to get in on the fun. Which is why Ron set up a not-for-profit organization that would then make it possible to The Animation Show of Shows to expand its mission.

“After all, it’s one thing to show these new animated short films to industry insiders who then might have some knowledge of who these fledgling filmmakers are, the reputations of their teachers and/or their independent work. And it’s an entirely different thing to show these great new animated short films to an audience that’s going in cold. That has absolutely no context when it comes to who these filmmakers are and where the ideas for each of these new animated shorts may have come from,” Diamond stated.

2015-07-02-1435865118-6502741-Diamond1.jpg

That was what really drove Ron to get a Kickstarter campaign going for the Animation Show of Shows. If he was going to transform this showcase of new animated short films into something that members of the general film-going public could genuinely understand and appreciate … Well, that then meant that Diamond would have to craft profiles of the talented individuals who had created these animated short films. And given that Ron prides himself on always putting together a program that represents what is going on internationally in animation that year, that then meant Diamond was going to need to send film crews around the globe to create these contextual pieces that would profile that year’s top animators.

Thanks to the generous pledges of the people who supported Ron’s vision for a more ambitious, broader reaching Animation Show of Shows, those profiles will now be included in Diamond’s next feature-length compilation of the finest animated shorts from around the world. Not only that, but Ron will be using these funds to expand into the field of restoration. Singling out great animated short films from the past that need to be preserved and shared.

By the way, if you’re headed to San Diego next week for the 2015 edition of Comic-Con and want to get a sense of the sort of show that Ron Diamond plans on presenting very soon at a theater near you, the 16th Annual Animation Show of Shows will be presented in Hall H on Friday, July 10th from 10 – 11:30 a.m. Hopefully — as part of the Q & A session that’s supposed to follow this presentation — Diamond will then discuss his plans for this award-winning series of animated short films.

Amy Schumer Shows Why The Internet Needs To Get Over Its Disney Princess Obsession

The Internet is nauseatingly obsessed with Disney princesses, and even more obsessed with imagining them in some altered state. (As Velociraptors, seriously?) While websites love to fixate on things like how characters are animated so that their eyes are bigger than their wrists, or how they would look if they had more realistic waistlines, Amy Schumer’s latest sketch tackles the bigger question of why anyone would want to be a princess at all.

Sure, Disney movies and their characters are sanitized versions of classic fairy tales by the Grimm Brothers and Hans Christian Anderson, but when all the adventure is said and done, being a princess is actually all about being married off as an underage teenager, and hoping you can produce a male heir.

Besides, everyone knows happily ever after isn’t a real thing.

Science Shows Wearing High Heels Makes Women Stronger (and Weaker)

High heels have been found to make women both stronger and weaker according to a new study published in The International Journal of Clinical Practice. The subjects, women studying to become flight attendants in South Korea, had heels as part of their classroom uniform, a decision made since the job they were training for would also require similar footwear. Scientists found that those enrolled in their second and third years of the program showed greater muscle strength in the area surrounding the ankle than the incoming freshmen. But oddly, the upward trend stopped abruptly when the women in their senior year of the program were examined.

04-bright-yellow-high-heels-plaid-skirt-street-style

Even though those were the women who had logged the most hours in their heels, they showed weakening of the same muscles that were becoming stronger in the sophomore and junior classmates. Senior, junior, and sophomore students were all found to have worse balance than the newbies.

The lead in the study, Hanseo University exercise physiology professor Jee Yong-Seok, explained that the ratio of strength between areas on the sides of the ankle to that in the front and the back was off in the heel-wearing women. Per The New York Times, that messes with stability and balance and leads to weakening of the same muscles that were initially becoming stronger due to the heels. In turn, ankle issues can cause injuries stemming from other muscle groups in the legs, including your hamstrings.

Happily for stiletto-lovers, the docs the Times chatted to didn’t suggest abandoning heels. Rather, they said to incorporate basic exercises like calf raises and heel drops (stand on the back edge of a stair and slowly let your heel lower dip down as far as it can). If you wear heels at the office, there’s also a benefit to be gained from slipping them off when you’re sitting at your desk since the position feet are put in while wearing a pair can affect the muscles, even when immobile.

The attention paid to Bryce Dallas Howard’s Jurassic World high-heel running scenes makes the study especially interesting. Though, to be fair, Howard said she prepped for all her action with a lot of calf raises.

Watch Lily James, modern-day Cinderella, discover her perfect pair of heels:

Oklahoma KFC Shows Sex Scene

An Oklahoma family who went to KFC for dinner was willing to pay good money to see some thighs and breasts. But they didn’t expect to see those parts wiggling in sexual congress.

That’s what happened last Thursday to Gerald and April Whalen when they ate at a KFC in Edmond, Oklahoma with their six-year-old twin boys and saw an explicit sex scene on an overhead TV.

“I was flabbergasted,” Gerald Whalen told KOCO TV. “I looked up from my plate, and we’re talking full nudity.”

In order to avoid arousing the interest of the twins, the parents tried not to react to the kinky footage. That was hard to do because of the moaning and heavy breathing emanating from the screen.

The Whalens initially thought there was a pornographic film on the TV, but it was later identified as merely a sexually explicit scene from the racy Starz show, Outlander, according to UPI.com.

Gerald Whalen filmed the x-rated video with his phone while another customer griped to employees.

“The manager came running out and flipped the TV off really quick,” Gerald Whalen told KDVR. “I think she actually unplugged it.”

The corporate headquarters of the fried chicken giant apologized in a statement to TV station KOCO.

“We apologize for any negative dining experiences. This was an isolated incident, and we are taking measures to ensure programming like this cannot be accessed in the future.”

The KFC location that showed the offending clip has also promised to restrict sure certain channels won’t be able to be accessed again.

Gerald Whalen told News9.com that he hopes no one gets fired job over the unseemly mixup.

Jon Stewart Shows How Weird Rand Paul’s Presidential Announcement Was

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) made his big announcement on Tuesday, telling a crowd in Louisville that he’s running for president in 2016.

But as Jon Stewart pointed out on Tuesday night’s “Daily Show,” it took a while to get there.

Before Paul went onstage, there were multiple speakers, the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, the singing of the national anthem and several video presentations — including one that featured a clip from “The Daily Show.”

“Thirty minutes into the show, I had said more at this event than the guy who was there to announce his candidacy for president,” Stewart said.

Along with taking forever to get to the announcement, there were a few weird moments, like when former congressman J.C. Watts (R-Okla.) slipped and said Paul would become “the next United States of America,” as well as a very excited young man in the audience.

Check it out in the clip above.

Harry Styles Shows That Being Charitable Is Really ‘What Makes You Beautiful’

Harry Styles can be a pretty amazing guy — and that’s not just because he has fabulous hair.

Though One Direction has been busy performing around the world as part of the “On The Road Again” tour, Styles took time out last week to visit students from the Lalela Project, an organization that provides arts education to at-risk youth in Cape Town, South Africa, according to the group’s Instagram page.

The 21-year-old reportedly just wanted to do some good.

Harry decided to go to the Lalela Project all by himself and he really impressed kids and workers there,” a source told the Sun UK, adding that “Harry could easily have spent extra time at his hotel relaxing but he really wants to give back when the band are traveling the world.”

The source told the Sun that Styles chatted with the students and gave them tickets to the band’s show in the city. While on stage, the singer even wore a Lalela luggage tag during the show, according to the organization’s Facebook page.

Despite his hectic touring life, Styles wanted to pay his dues to initiatives that were helping the people who needed it most, the source said.

“This tour hasn’t been easy for the boys but [Harry] knows their lives are far better than many of their fans’ and kids being helped by projects like this.”

Styles’ visit with the Lalela students was a compassionate move, but the 21-year-old is no stranger to giving back.

Back in 2013, the singer and his bandmate, Liam Payne, participated in a charity date auction, in which fans could bid on an evening out with the two, the Press Association reported. The money from the auction went to go to Trekstock, an organization that supports young people with cancer.

Earlier that year, the band also recorded a cover of Blondie’s “One Way or Another” to support Comic Relief, a charity that works to tackle poverty and social injustice.

Universal Orlando went by the book when creating live shows for the Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley

When it came to creating authentic live entertainment for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley, the folks at Universal Orlando Entertainment really went by the book.

“Which book?,” you ask. “Harry Potter and the Chambers of Secret.” A single sentence from that 1998 J.K. Rowling novel, to be exact. Where — as The Boy Who Lived was exploring “The Burrow” (i.e., the Weasley family home) — Harry noticed that …

… the old radio next to the sink had just announced that coming up was “Witching Hour, with the popular singing sorceress Celestina Warbeck.”

2015-01-29-Celestina3.jpg

And with that one line of text, Universal Entertainment finally found a solution for a challenge that had been plaguing the Diagon Alley project. Which was how to naturalistically add a live entertainment element to this ambitious expansion of Universal Orlando’s Wizarding World.

“Whenever we’re developing new lands for our theme parks, we always look for ways to turn streets into stages. Give our guests the chance to come around a corner and suddenly stumble upon this seemingly spontaneous moment of entertainment,” Michael Aiello, Director of Entertainment – Creative Development for Universal Orlando Resort, explained during a recent interview. “That’s why Jake and Elwood regularly roll through Universal Studios Florida in their Bluesmobile. So that the Blues Brothers can then be seen presenting a live street show out on our New York backlot. Or why the Whos carol around Seuss Landing whenever we’re celebrating Grinchmas at Universal’s Islands of Adventure.”

But when it came to Diagon Alley, Aiello and the Universal Entertainment team were presented with a unique challenge. Given that this expansion of The Wizarding World was supposed to authentically recreate what had previously been seen in the Harry Potter films and described in J.K. Rowling’s fiction, they were now dealing with a full-scale environment that was going to be so rich & hyper-detailed that it could potentially upstage any attempts at live entertainment.

2015-01-29-Celestina4.jpg

“But once we came across that line in ‘Chamber of Secrets’ which revealed that Molly Weasley was a Celestina Warbeck fan, that was our get-out-of-jail-free card. Here was a character that J.K. herself had dreamed up, this famous singing sorceress. And wouldn’t it make sense that — at some point in her fabled career — that Celestina would drop by Diagon Alley, the place where all of the witches & wizards of London went to do their shopping?,” Aiello continued. “So we took this idea to J.K. And she was so supportive of this idea that she actually provided us with the titles of several songs that Celestina could possibly perform while she was doing a live remote from Diagon Alley for the Wizarding Wireless Network.”

Mind you, once Rowling had provided Aiello and the team with titles like “You Stole My Cauldron But You Can’t Have My Heart” and “Beat Back Those Bludgers, Boys, and Chuck That Quaffle Here,” it was then up to Universal Entertainment to turn these Potter-centric concepts into musical numbers that singers could actually perform. Which is why they then turned to Michael Weiner and Alan Zachary, the talented team behind Broadway’s “First Date.”

“And from the moment we told Michael and Alan that J.K. saw Celestina as this Shirley Bassey-like performer who worked with three back-up singers, they immediately knew what to do with the songs for this character,” Patrick Braillard, Diagon Alley’s show director, recalled. “They wrote us these great jazz-fusion numbers that only a true diva like Lena Horne or Bette Midler could pull off. Which is why — when people are wandering around Diagon Alley and then happen upon Celestina performing with her Banshees — they’re completely blown away. This show just knocks their socks off.”

2015-01-29-Celestina2.jpg

Of course, if you’re looking to wow an audience with a seemingly impromptu live show, you first need a proper stage for your performers to appear on. Which is why — as Universal Creative was initially designing Diagon Alley — they deliberately created a corner in Carkitt Market where Celestina and her Banshees could then make a dramatic entrance by coming down this long staircase.

“That space really serves this Wizarding Wireless Network broadcast well. Which is kind of ironic, given that Celestina and her Banshees wasn’t actually the first live show that Universal Entertainment wrote for Diagon Alley,” Aiello said. “We had this concept that we’d originally pitched for Hogsmeade. One where we wanted to establish this troupe of tale tellers who would wander about The Wizarding World and tell Universal Orlando visitors about The Boy Who Lived. But since there were no characters like this in either the Potter books or movies, it just didn’t seem authentic to go ahead with this particular entertainment idea – which is why this creative concept kind of fell off the table for Hogsmeade.”

Ah, but all that changed in 2007 with the publication of “The Tales of Beedle the Bard.” For in the foreword of this collection of Wizarding World fairytales, J.K. revealed that there was a Wizarding Academy of Dramatic Arts.

2015-01-29-Celestina5.jpg

“And once we came across that reference in ‘Beedle the Bard,’ we were like ‘A-ha! Let’s latch onto that. Let’s figure out how we can expand upon this idea and then somehow make it work for Diagon Alley,’ ” Michael continued. “And in the end, what we decided to do was invent this traveling troupe of players who had trained at the Wizarding Academy of Dramatic Arts who now do street theater. And to then connect this new piece of Diagon Alley entertainment with the book that had inspired it, we decided to have these traveling players perform selected stories from ‘The Tales of Beedle the Bard.’ Which is kind of The Wizarding World’s version of Grimm’s Fairytales or Aesop’s Fables.”

What made this particular entertainment concept somewhat hard to pull off was that most Universal Orlando visitors only knew ‘The Tales of Beedle the Bard’ from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1. Which had featured a stylized animated version of one of this book’s stories, “The Tale of the Three Brothers.”

“And since — whenever possible — we want to create some sort of visual continuity between the Harry Potter films and our theme park version of The Wizarding World, we decided to have those visiting members of the Wizarding Academy of Dramatic Arts present a troubadour version of ‘The Tale of the Three Brothers’ using puppets that looked just like the animated characters had in Deathly Hallows – Part 1,” Aiello explained. “Thankfully, Michael Currey Design was up to the specific design challenges of this project. They created these terrific-looking, lightweight, hand sculpted puppets that the performers could just pull out of a trunk and then manipulate right there in front of the audience.”

2015-01-29-Celestina6.jpg

And to insure that this group of traveling players would have then a selection of tales to tell whenever they next appeared in Diagon Alley, Universal Entertainment decided to turn another story from “The Tales of Beedle the Bard” into a piece of street theater. And this performance piece — “The Fountain of Fair Fortune” — also features some beautifully-detailed, Michael Curry-designed puppets.

“This is what we’ve tried to do with the entire Wizarding World project. Find these kernels of content that J.K. has written that we can then expand in full-sized pieces of entertainment that are just as rich and vivid as the fiction she created,” Aiello concluded. “That — in a nutshell — is what I think the Universal difference is. That — when we work with other people’s intellectual property — we’re just as passionate, enthusiastic & dedicated to these characters and their stories as the original creators are. Universal Orlando always strives to put these IPs we’ve been entrusted with in the best possible light.”

And speaking of dedication: Tomorrow, the most dedicated Wizarding World fans in the world will be descending on Universal Orlando for the 2nd annual “Celebration of Harry Potter.” Hosted by Universal Orlando Resort and Warner Bros., this three day-long event will feature Q&A sessions with Robbie Coltrane (Rubeus Hagrid), Michael Gambon (Albus Dumbledore) and other stars of the Harry Potter films. Not to mention a live duelling demonstration led by the world’s only Wand Combat choreographer, Paul Harris. Plus the “Celebration of Harry Potter” Expo, which features interactive exhibits from Warner Bros., Pottermore, Harry Potter: The Exhibition and Warner Bros. Studio Tour London, where Universal Orlando guests will then have the opportunity to try on the Sorting Hat.

2015-01-29-Celestina7.jpg

But given that this will be the first time that many Harry Potter fans will have the chance to experience The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley (which officially opened to the public back on July 8, 2014), just be aware that there will probably be record crowds in Carkitt Market all weekend long. As these J.K. Rowling fans check out the live stage shows that Universal Entertainment built around Celestina Warbeck & her Banshees and the Wizarding Academy of Dramatic Arts.

Joe Franklin Dead, TV Host Established Talk Shows

NEW YORK (AP) — Pioneering radio and TV host Joe Franklin, who gave breaks to the likes of Al Pacino and Bill Cosby on his variety show long before they became famous and who boasted he never missed a broadcast in decades, has died at age 88.

He died Saturday of cancer, which he had had for a few years, longtime producer and friend Steven Garrin said. Franklin often is credited with developing the standard TV talk show format, sitting behind a desk while interviewing wanna-be celebrities, minor celebrities and the occasional bona fide celebrity.

The host of “The Joe Franklin Show” started in TV in 1950. By the early 1990s, he often said, he had chatted with more than 300,000 guests, including Marilyn Monroe, Liza Minnelli and Madonna. But the notables often had to share air time on his low-budget show with a tap-dancing dentist or a man who whistled through his nose.

Garrin recalled how Franklin, who was parodied by Billy Crystal on “Saturday Night Live,” hired a young Bette Midler as his studio singer and gave a chance on his show to every up-and-comer trying to make it big: Bruce Springsteen, Woody Allen and Dustin Hoffman among them.

“He was a wonderful guy,” Garrin said Sunday. “He gave everybody an opportunity.”

Garrin said he remembered how Pacino, after he became a Hollywood movie star, told Franklin in a private meeting: “Joe, why don’t you interview me now that I’m somebody? You interviewed me when I was nobody.”

After Franklin’s TV show ended in 1993, he worked on his late-night radio show. He continued to work even after he developed cancer, doing celebrity interviews on the Bloomberg Radio Network.

Tuesday was the first scheduled broadcast Franklin had missed in more than 60 years, said Garrin, who worked with him for 20 of those years, booking all his interviews and recording the shows in his studios in Times Square between 1991 and 2010.

Heels Giving You the Pinch? Charlotte Dellal Shows How to Dress Up Your Flats and Still Look Festive!

the-coveteur

We all love how heels look, but sometimes, no matter how much we hate admitting it, they pinch. As a designer and mother, Charlotte Dellal, designer of her namesake label Charlotte Olympia, loves heels with all her heart but definitely sees flats as a sartorial necessity. She creates for the modern woman’s wardrobe, telling us, “being at work full time and a mother of three, I like to design flats that can be dressed up or dressed down; whether I am at the office, in a meeting, picking up my boys from school, or running around after them in the park.” Moreover, Charlotte draws inspiration from her own life and says, “I love to give my collections a soul and a story. I love collecting beautiful things and I translate this by transforming everyday objects into something wearable.”

Though originally known for her sky-high heels (and we really do mean sky-high!), Charlotte introduced her first Kitty flats with her fall 2011 “To Die For” collection (inspired by the Agatha Christie novels of the 1930s) and they have been a staple ever since. Initially, Charlotte tells us, “The idea was to create a shoe inspired by a men’s smoking slipper as typically worn in those days. I wanted to make it more feminine and flirty like a cat; I turned the traditionally high-cut vamp into ears and replaced the classic embroidered monogram with a feline face. The ‘Kitty’ is now a signature style and returns each season updated to suit the mood of the collection.” She has even recently come out with a Kitty & Co Collection, giving each cat-inspired flat a unique expression and personality.

charlotte-olympia

As a Kitty flats lover, Charlotte appreciates the necessity for flats to be dressed up or down and tries to translate that into the designs of her iconic flats. Though her favorites are the classic red leopard Bisoux style flats, claiming, “I am never without red lips or leopard print, so [these] shoes are everything I love wrapped into one!” Charlotte also sings the praises of a classic black flat, telling us, “my black velvet signature Kitty flats are very easy to wear, they look equally good with jeans or with a little dress.” And we couldn’t agree more!

Same-Sex Couples Are Less Likely To Divorce Than Heterosexual Couples, New Study Shows

This post originally appeared on Bustle.

By Pamela J. Stubbart

Opponents of gay marriage, this one is for you. New evidence from the Williams Institute suggests that same-sex couples are less likely to divorce than heterosexual couples, so anyone who has ever argued that gay couples are “ruining” the sanctity of marriage, well, it looks like you’re totally and completely wrong. Oops.

According to data gathered and analyzed by the Williams Institute (a research group focused on “sexual orientation and gender identity law and public policy” at UCLA), within the first four years or so that same-sex marriage has been legal in New Hampshire and Vermont, just 1.1 percent of same-sex marriages have ended in divorce. If you include the data from six more states regarding same-sex civil unions and registered domestic partnerships, the same-sex dissolution rate per year ticks up to about 1.6 percent of all legally-recognized partnerships. Both of these same-sex splits per year rates are lower than the 2 percent of heterosexual marriages which dissolve per year in the United States.

As the Williams Institute also points out, the number of same-sex couples choosing to get married following the Supreme Court’s 2013 Windsor decision is rising quickly — even in states where same-sex marriage was already legal. This suggests that as public opinion of same-sex marriage continues to improve, more and more couples will be drawn into the institution (even those couples who were previously unsure about marriage), though these couples may or may not be more likely to divorce in the long-run, so continued analysis is required.

Unfortunately, persisting inequality in marriage laws also makes it more difficult for same-sex couples to separate: as a same-sex spouse, you can’t get a divorce in your home state unless that state recognizes your marriage in the first place, which could partially account for why divorce rates are so low.

But as long as we’re talking about positive news, here’s some more food for thought: according to another recent study published by the University of Melbourne earlier this summer, children of same-sex parents may fare better than those of similar heterosexual couples too. So advocates of “traditional” marriages and families, take that.

Jon Stewart Shows Why China Really Needs That Climate Change Deal

Beijing may have been just about the best possible place to unveil a major deal on emissions because as Jon Stewart pointed out on Tuesday night’s “Daily Show,” the city really needs it.

The air quality is so bad that Beijing had to shut down factories and schools to help reduce smog ahead of the APEC summit. And these efforts worked, leading residents to dub the rare clear skies “APEC blue.”

“Well at least residents didn’t flee in fear of the enormous, ‘SKY FIREBALL!'” Stewart joked, referring to the rare glimpse of sunlight.

That wasn’t the only APEC oddity. From “Hunger Games” cosplay to world leaders acting more like “Mean Girls,” Stewart took a look at the summit’s strangest moments.

‘Hot In Cleveland’ Cast Reveals Why The Show’s So Shocking

TV Land’s “Hot In Cleveland” is proof that with age comes excellence.

Behind its humor and side-splitting hijinks, the show harkens back to the hit ’80s sitcom “The Golden Girls” in its portrayal of mature women who are “rarely celebrated” on television, the cast told HuffPost Live on Tuesday. As such, the sitcom represents a stark departure from the traditional aesthetic normally seen on the small screen.

“It was kind of a wasteland out there. I don’t know of any other show where they were asking [for] women over even 40,” said actress Wendie Malick. “They were going so young with all of these shows, and there were so few shows about women. And the fact that they were going to create something with four women leads was shocking in and of itself.”

Malick hopes that the show might lead the way to a new trend in American television.

“It’s a breath of fresh air, and it’s so good to own who you are, instead of pretending you’re something else,” Malick told host Ricky Camilleri. “It’s why, I think, so many of us are so drawn to BBC shows where women are proud of their age and their experience. And in this country, we’d so love to bring that back.”

“Cleveland” costar Jane Leeves looked to Academy Award-winning actress Helen Mirren, the newest face of L’Oreal Paris, who she said embodied the grace of a mature woman.

“That is a sexy older woman who owns it. She doesn’t hide her age,” Leeves said. “She doesn’t die her hair even, I don’t think, anymore. She just owns it and that’s so wonderful.”

With veterans like Mirren getting their time to shine, here’s hoping the industry can make room for a few more mature women to flex their acting chops.

‘The 100’ Goes Dark In A Good Way: Season 2 Secrets From The CW Show’s Creator

“I didn’t see that coming.”

I said that to myself more than once during the first three episodes of “The 100,” which returns Wednesday on The CW.

The good news is, those shocks weren’t gratuitous or unsatisfying, and they weren’t merely there to shine a light on whatever wild plot turn had arisen in this brisk tale of post-apocalyptic survival.

No, what surprised me was how dark “The 100” was willing to go.

You’d have thought I learned my lesson during the show’s energetic first season, when “The 100” regularly transgressed whatever I thought of as “the rules” of The CW.

Everyone is quite attractive on “The 100” — some rules can never be broken — but that appears to be the only inviolate law of the network, which currently airs a large number of shows I just cannot quit (“Arrow,” “The Flash,” “Supernatural,” “Jane the Virgin“).

It isn’t just about the abs on these programs; it’s about the aspiration. Through all of their ups and downs (and there have been many peaks and valleys on “Supernatural,” which is about to air its 200th episode), these shows present characters, relationships and moral dilemmas that hold my interest week to week. That’s more than I can say for approximately 87 percent of the tepid new broadcast network dramas that have turned up in the last few fall seasons.

You could almost say that The CW is broadcast-network television’s boutique cable brand: The stakes are lower and it’s able to take more chances, and in recent years, its smarter gambits have paid off. While the bigger, richer broadcast networks turn increasingly toward bland formulas, “noisy” concepts and ill-advised star vehicles, The CW has quietly stuck to its knitting, churning out solid and enjoyable shows that end up giving me me more hope about humanity than an assorted six pack of network crime procedurals.

“The 100” is by far the network’s darkest show, but this addictive drama doesn’t forget to supply the adventure element as well. (“The 100” does for running through forests what “Doctor Who” does for sprinting down spaceship corridors.) It doesn’t have the bucks of bigger networks, so it has, of late, focused on smart casting and fresh, energized takes on familiar forms.

So, as you might have guessed, I am not here to make a claim for the innate originality of “The 100.” Like a crash survivor cannibalizing his or her ship, “The 100” takes components from the standard Y.A. and sci-fi toolkits and assembles them into a sturdy, efficient narrative. But like Syfy’s “Defiance” — another pulpy, enjoyable serial that unashamedly deploys its share of sci-fi and Western tropes and has a number of game, charismatic actors at its core — “The 100” doesn’t look away from the deeper questions embedded in its narrative.

“The 100” — a figure that originally described the number of teen survivors plunked down a century after Earth’s nuclear apocalypse — continues to tell the story of several factions of adults and teens trying to stay alive under desperate circumstances. Hence the occasional harshness and even extreme brutality on display, but this is no surprise to those who witnessed the torture and murders that occurred in Season 1. The good news is, this show truly embraces the characters’ impossible moral dilemmas without ever lapsing into lazy cynicism or predictable despair, and extreme actions are given the moral weight they’re due.

Though Earth is now habitable, more or less, if some are going to live, then others have to die, and these characters ask themselves who and what is worth dying for without bogging down the narrative with overdoses of morose self-pity. Sure, the drama has some convenient twists and a few believability-stretching moments, but I’m willing to give “The 100” the benefit of the doubt because its cast is used well, its pacing is crisp and it’s more morally adventurous than a lot of shows with far greater resources.

The survival game has changed this season: More adults have arrived on the scene and they have their own ideas about how to impose “order” on the young people — and others — who are roaming the surprisingly picturesque post-apocalyptic territories. The grown-ups often think they know best, but more often than not, Clarke Griffin (Eliza Taylor) is not having any of it.

Taylor is admirably committed to conveying Clarke’s unbreakable will, which sometimes comes off as almost unreasonable stubbornness. But Clarke’s skepticism about her new situation ends up being understandable, and her resistance is one of the most attractive elements of “The 100.” These kids have a chance to literally remake the world, and Clarke and her cohorts Bellamy (Bob Morley), Finn (Thomas McDonell), Octavia (Marie Avgeropoulos) and Raven (Lindsey Morgan) do not want to re-make their parents’ mistakes.

It’s fairly bold of “The 100” to take a narrative that’s relatively similar to “The Walking Dead” and put a teen girl at the center of it (and as is the case with “The Good Wife,” The CW show would actually support a reading of it as a critique of the differences between male and female leadership styles). As Alyssa Rosenberg has pointed out, even on prestige dramas, young women often “function as built-in critics of the behavior of the adults.” Though Eliza is clearly at the center of this story, many of the younger characters on “The 100” are turning into credible leaders. As Bellamy, Bob Morley has been a terrific asset to the show since it began, and through sheer force of will, Bellamy’s sister Octavia has become one of my favorite TV badasses. There’s a Season 2 scene in which Octavia overpowers a much larger character and the moment should have been preposterous, but Avgeropoulos sold the hell out of it.

There’s a lot for the young folk to critique on “The 100,” but there are not many cartoonish villains to be found (and the show makes good use of skilled adult actors like Paige Turco and Raymond J. Barry). On lesser dramas, hiring a parade of “Battlestar Galactica” actors might bring up uncomfortable questions about what a show is lacking, but on “The 100,” the presence of “BSG” alums drive home the central parallel between that great show and this more modest yet very enjoyable one.

As Adama and Roslin taught us, those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

HuffPost TV spoke to “The 100” executive producer Jason Rothenberg about what fans can expect from the second season. I don’t consider what’s below to be particularly spoiler-y. There are hints about what’s coming, but trust me, you won’t see a lot of it coming.

Last time we talked, you couldn’t tell me how many episodes would be in Season 2, but now we know it’s 16. How do you feel about that number?

I love that number. Thirteen was hard to do. Sixteen is going to be harder because it’s just the sheer number [of episodes in total]. I don’t know how people do 22 episodes and make them good. In a serialized adventure like this, that’s too much. You can’t have every episode be good. At some point, the most important part of my job is quality control. Last year, we were able to do what I think was a very strong 13-episode season. This year, we’re going to do a little more, but it’s not so much more that it’s going to kill me and make it so that [the attitude would be], “Eh, that’s good enough.”

When we talked before [before and after the Season 1 finale], you said you wanted to get into more character moments and the characters’ pasts, so I would think more episodes would give you time to do that. I also think about the fact that you have so many groups and factions now — you just probably need more room for that.

“I wouldn’t say it’s a new show, but it’s very different.”Yeah, so far a lot story time in the first couple of episodes has been taken up with that. We’re almost re-establishing what the show is. I wouldn’t say it’s a new show, but it’s very different. We’re establishing new sets. Usually, in a Season 2, you go back to your same locations and same sets. This is totally new. We’ve got no Ark, for the most part. We’ve got Mount Weather, which we spent a ton of money on and it’s amazing. We’re going to live there for quite a bit of story. That’s a new world. And that’s really hard on production, by the way. You don’t have the time or the money that you have with a pilot.

On top of that, you are shooting outside a lot, and the weather around Vancouver can be so rainy and unpredictable.

It’s great, though. I’m in my nice office in Santa Monica, so I can’t really complain, but the worse the weather is, the better the show tends to look.

Is there a dividing line in the season — like, a first bunch and then the show comes back in the new year and airs a bunch more?

The good thing about last year was that we did 13 episodes in a row. This year, we’re on in the fall, so unfortunately there are some natural breaks for Thanksgiving and Christmas. But in the [writers’] room, we break stories so there’s a big [episode] right before the first break and a big one right before the second break. The bigger episodes will unfold like that. And then I think we run through eight in a row at the end. There’s a huge [development in] Episode 5. And there’s a story point [later in the season] that’s going to really blow people’s minds.

Given where everyone’s starting in Season 2, it sounds like there will be a lot of new recurring characters.

Yes, there will be new people who will be with us for a while. The fun thing is, we’re building out all these universes — Mount Weather, the camp where the Ark fell — that’s our main ground set this year. It’s unbelievable how big the ship is. We built the drop ship last year, but this is a section of the Ark. It’s huge.

The thing that Abby and Kane climbed out of at the end of Season 2 — that’s a different section. It broke apart and they were looking for other survivors, and they came across this section that is more intact. Over the season, that [large section of the Ark on the ground] becomes like “Deadwood” with a space ship in the middle of it. It’s like a Western town. They build a bar and a hospital and all of that.

What’s been the most fun about the second season so far?

There are so many new people on the ground, so we get to have scenes with actors who have never worked together. There are some really big reunions coming up.

I’m sure you can’t say when it will be, but the Abby-Clarke reunion will be a big deal.

That’ll be a really long-awaited moment for them and for the audience too. It’s going to be crazy because she’s so different now. They’re both very different from those two women who last saw each other in the teaser of the pilot episode. We did a flashback of them together in Episode 3 [in the first season], but [actors Paige Turco, who plays Clarke’s mother, Abby, and Eliza Taylor] have not worked together since then.

Obviously the show has a very active online community and you interact with them a lot. Do you ever think, “What will the fans think?” when you’re laying out where the show will go?

I’ve never been influenced by anyone saying [what they want]. If [a fan idea] is a great idea, I would do it, but I’m not going to take the pulse of the audience before I do anything. You’ve got to surprise people.

I will assume you know that people are really into Linctavia.

That’s a relationship with that actually has some real weight in the show, because it’s about different cultures. The whole thing this season is about turning people’s views on the Grounders. The Grounders are actually not the monolithic bad guys. When I say the season is about reunions, it’s also about unions. Groups that hate each other and are at war with each other need to make alliances in order to defeat the bigger bad that may be out there.

I wanted to ask a couple of those before I let you go. Here’s one: Where did Lincoln get his tattoos?

The Grounders actually tattoo themselves. It’s sort of based on Native American culture [and many] ancient cultures — tattooing is a really old art form. They’re all hand done. One tattoo that actually isn’t a tattoo is — they mark themselves for every kill. They burn a little bump into their backs. Lincoln has that field of bumps on his back. And they could tell you [who each person was]. It’s a way not to sort of glamorize the kill but to memorialize the person that died.

We’re going to meet a character this year named Indra who’s a very high-ranking Grounder who’s got [a lot of them]. They don’t fit on her back, they spill down her arm.

Will we learn Lincoln’s last name?

No. I don’t know if he has a last name, honestly. I think if they have last names, it’s more like, “Of the Woods.” It’s more a geographic designation.

“The 100” airs Wednesday at 9:00 p.m. ET on The CW, and the first season of the show arrives Wednesday on Netflix.

New Look At Leonardo da Vinci Masterpiece Shows Even Geniuses Second-Guess Themselves

Leonardo da Vinci may have been called a genius, but that doesn’t mean he never second-guessed himself.

In a new book, optical engineer Pascal Cotte explains how a new imaging technology known as the layer amplification method (LAM) helped show that Leonardo painted two previous versions of his “Lady with an Ermine” masterpiece before settling on the version that we know today. One version of the 15th Century artwork didn’t even include the ermine at all.

“We’ve discovered that Leonardo is always changing his mind,” Cotte, CTO of the Lumiere Technology company in Paris, told BBC News. “This is someone who hesitates — he erases things, he adds things, he changes his mind again and again… The LAM technique gives us the capability to peel the painting like an onion, removing the surface to see what’s happening inside and behind the different layers of paint.”

The LAM technique involves using the reflection of light to reveal images in different layers of paint, according to a statement from the company.

“It tells us a lot more about the way Leonardo’s mind worked when he was doing a painting,” Martin Kemp, emeritus professor of the history of art at the University of Oxford, told BBC News. “We know that he fiddled around a good deal at the beginning, but now we know that he kept fiddling around all the time and it helps explain why he had so much difficulty finishing paintings.”

As for the woman depicted in the painting, experts have long believed it to be Cecilia Gallerani, who was the mistress of Ludovico Sforza, the Duke of Milan. According to the Wall Street Journal, just before this portrait was painted, Sforza was awarded the insignia of the Order of the Ermine by the King of Naples, becoming known as “l’Ermellino.” Scholars believe the ermine symbolizes the Duke, or serves as a visual pun on Cecilia’s surname (ermine in Greek is galay.)

Cotte’s book, “Lumiere on the Lady with an Ermine,” was published on Sept. 1 and is available on Amazon.

How Movies And TV Shows Are Changing The Way You Think About Love

The movies and TV shows watched by millions aren’t just entertaining; a new study says they’re affecting how people view romance and changing how they behave in relationships.

Researchers from The University of Michigan studied 625 college students (392 of whom were female) to determine if movies and TV shows were influencing their love lives.

Participants were given a list of 93 romantic films, such as “500 Days of Summer,” “Crazy Stupid Love,” and “In Time” and asked how many they had seen.

Next, they were given a list of 17 sitcoms including “How I Met Your Mother” and “Big Bang Theory” and were asked how many they watch and how often. Lastly, they were asked if and how often they watch marriage-themed reality shows like “The Bachelor” and “Millionaire Matchmaker.”

Researchers then analyzed the students’ ideas about love and also gauged whether or not participants believed that TV portrayed real life or saw it as total fantasy.

At the end of the study, three conclusions emerged:

  • More exposure to romantic movies led to a greater tendency to believe “love finds a way” and can overcome all obstacles.
  • More exposure to marriage-themed reality shows led participants to believe in “love at first sight” and that true love will be nearly perfect (what researchers call “idealization”).
  • On the other hand, watching TV sitcoms led to a negative view of romance and very little endorsement for concepts like “love finds a way,” “love at first sight,” “idealization” and the “one and only”.

Thus, the researchers suggest that the behaviors shown in each entertainment genre are actually being imprinted into our views of romance. For example, watching lavish dates on “The Bachelor” leads viewers to idealize love, while watching a couple bicker on a sitcom leads to a more negative impression of marriage.

So what does this mean for your own love life?

“Previous research suggests that beliefs about relationships can have implications for relationship satisfaction and longevity,” study author Julia Lippman wrote in an email to The Huffington Post.

Indeed, past studies have illustrated that people who can be classified as romantic appear to have more successful romantic relationships: they report high levels of love for a current partner, higher levels of relationship satisfaction, greater commitment, and a decreased tendency to engage in extramarital sex.

However, as Lippman points out, while certain romantic ideals can lead to stronger relationships, they can have negative consequences as well.

“Seeing your partner through rose-colored glasses is associated with higher levels of relationship satisfaction, but it is easy to see how seeing a partner who is bad news through rose-colored glasses (say, someone who is abusive) could have negative implications,” such as staying in a bad relationship for too long. More research is needed to explore that topic further.

The findings were recently published in the journal Psychology of Popular Media Culture.

Here’s Why We’re Actually Still Watching Crime Shows

Since I write television, allow me to begin by stating the obvious: America has become more polarized than at any time since the 1960s. People on opposite sides of the partisan divide have not only ceased listening to each other, they are also looking to buy homes and rent apartments in politically homogenous neighborhoods (and cities!); so that the newspaper resting at the bottom of their cages won’t ruffle their ideological feathers; so they can tell birds singing different songs to flock off.

In another chapter from the hard to believe, crossing party lines has become a criminal offense, so that it’s impossible to get anything done without offering insult to one side or the other. And every action by moderately opposing forces is greeted with hysteria. Democrats adopt a Republican health care proposal from the 1990s, which was actually implemented by a Republican governor (and eventual Republican presidential nominee), and the rage on the right cannot be contained. Democrats furiously condemn a policy of fighting a war in Iraq and keeping prisoners in Guantanamo and the ethics of drone strikes and then, when they gain power…oh, the list is too long.

For better or worse, the justice system has become the last refuge for those of us looking for common ties with our fellow Americans. The need to arrest criminals and put them on trial transcends our petty differences, and allows varied communities to unite in common cause. Murder is terribly hard to politicize. As one of Henry the II’s sons says in The Lion in Winter, “I’ve never heard a corpse ask how it got so cold.”

And homicide investigations are largely successful. In most big cities, perhaps especially in Los Angeles and New York, every effort is made to comply with the law while hunting down those who have not. The LAPD polls regularly as the most respected municipal institution in Los Angeles. Our law enforcement agencies exist as working proof that government can move competently – even with bravery and selflessness – to do the right thing.

The unconscious fantasy element of procedural drama has evolved, from marveling at the intelligence of a particular detective, into a wistful desire that our entire body politic could put aside our mostly imaginary arguments long enough to focus on the crisis at hand: to drop our opinions in favor of the pattern of facts.

We love a good whodunit; bringing a murderer to heel satisfies our heroic impulses, and unites the audience with shared, public approval. If only we could figure out how to respect each other as well as we do the abstract principles of the justice system! That, ladies and gentlemen, is a mystery we ought to solve together.

In the meantime, procedural drama will have to do.

Jimmy Fallon’s Obama-Putin Call Shows What Really Happened… Maybe

“Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon claims to have received footage of the most recent call between President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin as the two discussed the crisis in Crimea.

In the clip above, Fallon’s Putin takes a swig of vodka, taunts the U.S. president on Obamacare, cites comic Yakov Smirnoff and mimics Putin’s weird laugh.

The pair even sing.

If calls between world leaders were really this much fun, the crisis would have been over ages ago.

Must See Painting Shows: March 2014

So I got a little carried away this month. There are so many strong shows around the country that this month’s must see list contains twenty-eight exhibtitons, and I could have easily added more.

It is a big week in the New York art world as multiple art fairs come to town, including The Armory Show, VOLTA and The ADAA Art Show, and the 2014 installment of the Whitney Biennial opens. Art dealers know an opportunity when they see one, so don’t be surprised to see a number of Biennial artists well represented in the various art fairs. I want to congratulate two New American Paintings’ alumni, past cover artist Keith Mayerson and Chicago-based Molly Zuckerman-Hartung, on their inclusion in this very painter friendly Biennial. Both are also currently featured in commercial gallery shows at Derek Eller Gallery in New York City and Corbett vs. Dempsey In Chicago, respectively.

There are close to three-dozen NAP alumni on view around the country. In Los Angeles, Ben Weiner continues to impress with his painterly chops. His just opened show at Mark Moore Gallery includes stunning examples of his large-scale photorealist/abstract images, as well as a new series of small-scale works made with some interesting materials. Right nearby in Culver City are Brian Porray’s show at Western Project, and a soon-to-open solo of work by 2013 MFA Annual artist and Yale grad, Evan Nesbit. Four extremely talented LA-based NAP alumni are currently having solo shows in New York City, including Lisa Sanditz at CRG Gallery, Iva Gueorguieva at Ameringer|McEnery|Yohe, Sarah Cain at Galerie Lelong, and the young and already in demand Brenna Youngblood at Tilton Gallery (Youngblood will be the focus of an exhibition at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis later this year).

Some months seem to favor mid-career and established artists, but emerging talent is on view everywhere in March. In Chicago, William J. O’Brien, who works in a range of media – from ceramics to painting – opens a show of new work at Shane Campbell Gallery (the artist is currently having his first comprehensive museum survey at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago). In San Francisco, Altman Sigel is presenting the delicate paintings of the Japanese artist, Shinpei Kusanagi. In Minneapolis, the young and on-the-move David Petersen Gallery is exhibiting new paintings by hometown emerging artist, Scott Nedrelow.

I don’t even know where to begin with New York City. Shows by emerging artists that I am excited about include: Ethan Cook at American Contemporary, Jordan Kantor at Churner and Churner, Mika Tajima at Eleven Rivington, Gabriel Hartley at Foxy Production, Liam Everett at On Stellar Rays, Donelle Woolford at Wallspace, and Ned Vena at Real Fine Arts in Brooklyn. One of our favorites at NAP, Summer Wheat, opens a show at the Lower East Side space, Pocket Utopia, on March 16th, and will also be the focus of a solo booth presentation with Samson at the Nada New York art fair in May.

Please visit the New American Paintings/BLOG for a more comprehensive list of must-see painting shows in March.

New American Paintings magazine is a juried exhibition-in-print, and the largest series of artist competitions in the United States. Old Photo Of Katy Perry Surfaces, Shows A Budding Singer Pre-Fame

It is sometimes easy to forget big stars were once unknown, ordinary folks trying to break into the business. Take Katy Perry, for example. The most-followed celebrity on Twitter who’s topped charts and conquered stages, Perry was once a plain-looking (albeit beautiful) young woman with a guitar.

A Reddit user by the name of ciphershort uploaded a photo to the site Saturday morning (Feb. 15), explaining: “My roommate used to hang out with Katy Perry. Tonight he busted out this photo.”

Well, we must admit, we’re not used to seeing Perry, now 29, like this:

If anything, we’re better accustomed to seeing her like this:

Hilarious Couple Shows Us It’s TOO Easy To Cut Your Wedding Guest List

Trying to narrow down your wedding guest list may seem like an impossible task at first. Consider all of the family, friends, family friends, neighbors, co-workers and ex-lovers who saw your engagement news on Facebook and are eagerly awaiting the invitation.

In a video posted to the Upright Citizens Brigade YouTube channel on Tuesday, comedians (and real-life couple) Laura Grey and Jordan Klepper discover that slashing the guest list isn’t quite as difficult as they thought.

Grounds for elimination include bra size (if bigger than bride’s), weird bangs, lack of black friends and a preference for the American version of “The Office.”

If you get cut, it’s nothing personal. Well, actually, maybe it is.

Social Butterflies’ Brains Differ From Those Of People With Fewer Friends, New Study Shows

SAN DIEGO — Being a social butterfly just might change your brain: In people with a large network of friends and excellent social skills, certain brain regions are bigger and better connected than in people with fewer friends, a new study finds.

The research, presented here Tuesday (Nov. 12) at the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience, suggests a connection between social interactions and brain structure.

“We’re interested in how your brain is able to allow you to navigate in complex social environments,” study researcher MaryAnn Noonan, a neuroscientist at Oxford University, in England, said at a news conference. Basically, “how many friends can your brain handle?” Noonan said. [7 Personality Traits You Should Change]

Scientists still don’t understand how the brain manages human behavior in increasingly complex social situations, or what parts of the brain are linked to deviant social behavior associated with conditions like autism and schizophrenia.

Studies in macaque monkeys have shown that brain areas involved in face processing and in predicting the intentions of others are larger in animals living in large social groups than in ones living in smaller groups.

To investigate these brain differences in humans, Noonan and her colleagues at McGill University, in Canada, recruited 18 participants for a structural brain-imaging study. They asked people how many social interactions they had experienced in the past month, in order to determine the size of their social networks.

As was the case in monkeys, some brain areas were enlarged and better connected in people with larger social networks. In humans, these areas were the temporal parietal junction, the anterior cingulate cortex and the rostral prefrontal cortex, which are part of a network involved in “mentalization” — the ability to attribute mental states, thoughts and beliefs to another.

“These different brain regions are all singing different songs,” Noonan said. “Networked areas are all singing the same song, and when they’re connected better, they’re singing more harmoniously with each other.”

The researchers also tested whether the size of a person’s social network was linked with changes in white-matter pathways, the nerve fibers that connect different brain regions.

Again, they found that white-matter tracts were better connected in people with bigger social networks. “The nerves were more like a Los Angeles freeway than a country road,” Noonan said.

The researchers couldn’t say whether social interaction caused these changes in brain structure and connectivity, or whether the brain determined how innately social someone was.

In the case of the monkeys, the researchers dictated the size of the animals’ social network, so they concluded that social-group size was causing the brain differences.

It can be inferred that a similar process takes place in human brains, but to prove this, long-term studies are needed, Noonan told LiveScience.

The fact that some brain regions may be larger and more connected suggests other regions might be smaller in the brains of the more socially adept, Noonan said.

“If you’re spending a lot of time in social environments using social skills and your brain’s changing, maybe you’re not learning to juggle in your free time or becoming proficient at the piano,” she said. “The brain is just changing and optimizing to reflect your needs, and if that is thriving within a complex social environment, that is what your brain is reflecting.”
