Crysis Remastered Will Still Be Released on Nintendo Switch on July 23

Following the delay of Crysis Remastered’s release date and trailer premiere due to mixed reactions to leaked footage, Crytek has announced that Crysis Remastered for Switch will still be released on July 23, 2020.

The news was revealed on Twitter by the official Crysis account which said “Dear fans, you may have seen our last update about the Crysis Remastered release, and we have good news for you. We can confirm that Crysis will still  be coming to Nintendo Switch on July 23rd!”

There is still no word on the release date for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or PC.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/07/01/crysis-remastered-delayed-after-mixed-reactions-to-leaked-footage”]

The trailer and release date announcement were both supposed to happen on July 1, 2020, but Crytek made the decision to delay the remaster of the 2007 original to “get Crysis Remastered up to the PC- and console-breaking standard you’ve come to expect from Crysis games.”

In our review of Cysis in 2007, we said “Crysis is one of, if not the, most stunningly beautiful games we’ve ever seen. But even beyond that, it’s a pretty fantastic shooter. Solid weapons, intelligent enemies, and fairly open level designs mix with nano-suit powers to make this one of the more entertaining ballistic showdowns in some time.”

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=what-games-got-right-and-mostly-wrong-about-life-in-2020&captions=true”]

Crysis Remastered is being co-developed by Crytek and Saber Interactive, and will feature improved graphics and optimizations for current-gen consoles that include software-based ray tracing, high-quality textures, improved art assets, temporal anti-aliasing, SSDO, SVOGI, depth fields, new light settings, motion blur, and particle effects (where applicable).

This Year’s Met Gala Is Called Off; ‘About Time: Fashion and Duration’ Still On

NO GALA THIS YEAR: After months of speculation that this year’s Met Gala would be canceled, museum officials on Tuesday confirmed there will be no event in 2020.
The decision is part of an overall plan that includes the cancellation of talks, tours, concerts and events at The Met through the end of this year. The nixed plans are in line with the need to provide an environment that provides social distancing. The Met Gala and the other events are expected to be resumed by the museum next year. That will include a belated celebration of the museum’s 150th anniversary, according to a statement.
The 2021 gala will be focused on next year’s exhibition at the Costume Institute, which has not yet been revealed, according to a Met spokeswoman. In March, organizers indicated that they hoped to hold the 2020 Met Gala at a later date.
There is also the likelihood of reduced museum hours when the Met reopens. In accordance with New York state’s phased plan for reopening the city, the Metropolitan Museum of Art now plans to reopen in mid-August or perhaps a few weeks later. When the public returns to the museum, The Met will debut “Making the Met: 1870-2020.”

Barneys Employees Say They’re Still ‘In the Dark’

More than two months since Barneys New York’s assets were sold to Authentic Brands Group, sparking liquidation sales at the former retailer’s remaining stores, a group of longtime employees say they still don’t know how this ends for them.
On Monday, a group of sales associates and other employees of Barneys’ Madison Avenue location in New York City told the federal bankruptcy court overseeing the case that they still haven’t been told when their employment formally ends, or received any guarantee of their pensions, or severance, or payments for unused benefits.
Some employees have simply left, rather than wait around for answers in the uncertainty, the employees said in their letter.
“We believe it is totally unreasonable that we have not been given any idea of what we are getting paid on closing,” the employees said. “We are assuming by law that we are entitled to these above mentioned benefits, but we are not lawyers, so do not know for sure.”
Generally, employers in New York don’t have to make severance payments to employees who are laid off, and what those employees are owed usually depends on the contract terms in question, employment attorneys said. Large employers with a well-established process for layoffs may

Is Antwerp Still Relevant in Today’s Fashion Landscape?

Antwerp, Belgium, has been rich for a long time. Pepper, silver and the silk trade made the city an economic powerhouse in the 16th century and it has been a nurturing place for art, culture and fashion ever since. Nowadays, it sits on the world’s largest diamond trade business and hosts Europe’s second-largest port.
The city’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts has been nurturing design talents such as the Antwerp Six, Martin Margiela, Haider Ackermann, Kris Van Assche, Glenn Martens, Demna Gvasalia and Jan-Jan Van Essche since the Eighties. They went on to run respectable and successful fashion businesses in the city or became creative directors at luxury houses, such as Hermès, Berluti, Dior and Balenciaga.
Now a new generation of Belgian fashion brands has decided to set up their businesses in the city, with new approaches and different design ethos.
“I wish I would have done it here, it would have been much easier,” said Martens, creative director of Y/Project, before he participated in a panel discussion during a series of talks organized last month by Flanders District of Creativity in Antwerp.

On to the Next: Vera Wang Still Going Strong After 60 Bridal Collections

“Deadly.”
That’s how Vera Wang sized up the two-and-a-half week-long lead-up to what is her 60th bridal collection. Seated in her Madison Park offices while lithesome models showed off her cool-girl wedding dresses, Wang said, “First there was ready-to-wear, then there was the Emmys in L.A. and then there was bridal. The investment in time, money, human resources and creativity is enormous on that kind of schedule. I can only compare it to maybe Pierpaolo [Piccioli] at Valentino, who has men’s, couture, ready-to-wear and then men’s again and couture. It’s a rough schedule if you do all of these collections.”
The milestone wasn’t ever a consideration for Wang, who said she is always up against it. “No, that didn’t even occur to me. I feel the same pressure every time I put a collection out. It doesn’t matter if it’s the 31st, 78th or the 16th. I pressure myself to be more creative, more of a thinker, and someone who is trying to envision things in a new way.”
From her standpoint, fashion’s always-on cycle asks a lot of designers, which is not the norm in other creative industries. “You don’t drop an album on schedule, but in fashion you are asked to be

Why Feminism Still Needs To Be Called Feminism

This post originally appeared on Bustle.

By JR Thorpe

Leaving aside the maniacs of the Men’s Rights Movement for a minute, even people committed to women’s rights have raised the sacrilegious idea in recent years that the f-word is old-fashioned and needs to be retired for something newer, snappier, and more inclusive. Quick, somebody hire a marketing department. Can we sum up an entire equality movement in an emoji? But all joking aside, should the word “feminism” be replaced?

I say no way — and understanding where the word “feminism” came from is a necessary ingredient to understanding why other words just can’t quite compete. Humanism, equalism, and other ideas have been suggested as replacements, by people as prominent as Meryl Streep, but if they really want a word that’s all about fighting for the rights of women in the world, “feminism” is the best we’ve got, and there are good historical reasons as to why.

So here’s why you shouldn’t throw away your “This Is What A Feminist Looks Like” T-shirt or alter it to another word. The history of “feminism” as a word is a slightly twisted one, and it has some unexpected moments — just like the waves of feminism itself. Words are strangely powerful things. Let’s take a look at how the term feminism came to be — and why it needs to stay.

Where The Word Feminism Came From

2015-11-16-1447687359-9094439-5d0528f066ac01339eb00af7184f89fb.jpg

In a case of quite peculiar irony, the word “feminism,” used by generations of women to explain their struggle for equal rights and opportunities, was coined by a dude. Charles Fourier was a French socialist philosopher of radical principles in the 19th century, and his term “feminisme” is the basis for today’s term in English. And Fourier’s own peculiarities have led to some people wondering if it’s the right word at all.

Fourier didn’t advocate for complete gender equality because, in his world, the sexes were too seriously biologically different to be treated the same. He was also a utopian thinker, and his conception of “ideal” human life was something like a Grand Budapest Hotel-like commune where workers changed their occupation up to eight times a day to avoid monotony. (Look, if we had to get rid of all the words in English that were coined by strange white dudes, we’d likely not have much to talk about.)

Luckily, his “feminisme” was quickly co-opted by activists, and started to show up in English. Hilariously, its first appearance was in The UK Daily News in the 1890s, “what our Paris Correspondent describes as a ‘Feminist’ group… in the French Chamber of Deputies,” as a warning that the ideology could be extremely dangerous. And it came to the U.S. a decade or so later in an article by the French suffragist Madeline Pelletier (who, by the way, dressed fabulously in men’s suits and bowler hats, and was the first female French psychiatrist).

Another interesting thing about the history of the word “feminism” is that, while huge swaths of women in history worked for feminist goals like women’s voting rights and access to education, self-identification as a “feminist” was relatively rare until midway through the 20th century. People like Elizabeth Cady Stanton didn’t use the word. The real boom for the word “feminist” in English came with feminism’s “second wave,” in the ’60s and ’70s. It’s far newer in the mouths of English-speakers than you might think: only 50 or so years old.

The Current Controversy Over The F-Word

2015-11-16-1447687423-6029585-dd77fdf066bd01336e180aecee5a8273.jpg

The word “feminism” has encountered a lot of chatter recently about whether it’s “outmoded” or needs to be “upgraded” — or, indeed, phased out. The arguments range from the utterly ridiculous (“sexism has been solved, we’ve got the vote, what’s everybody complaining about”) to the more serious.

Feminism is accused as a term of being old-fashioned, aggressive, insufficiently inclusive, not doing enough to solve sexism, and carrying too much baggage. People have suggested alternatives, like “humanism” or “equalism” — but I think we need to hang onto feminism as a word, problematic as it is. Here’s why.

Why “Humanism” Isn’t A Good Replacement

2015-11-16-1447687469-5462508-ccc8e52066c701330b840e76e5725d9d.jpg

“Humanism” has been tossed around as a possible replacement for “feminist,” on the grounds that it sounds the same but seems more inclusive of humanity as a whole. Sarah Jessica Parker has said, for instance, that “I’m not a feminist, I’m a humanist.” So has Meryl Streep. The problem? Being a humanist isn’t just a declaration that you’re in favor of all people everywhere having the same rights. It’s its own philosophical category, and using it willy-nilly without understanding its meaning is problematic.

Humanism is, essentially, the belief that the source of human values isn’t God, but humanity itself — particularly our capacity to be rational. It’s also a celebration of human life and the individual, and it’s existed as a philosophical tradition since the Enlightenment in Europe. According to the New World Encyclopedia,

Humanism refers to any perspective which is committed to the centrality and interests of human beings. It also refers to a belief that reason and autonomy are the basic aspects of human existence, and that the foundation for ethics and society is autonomy and moral equality.

It’s a great perspective — humanist wedding ceremonies are understandably popular — but it doesn’t mean that you’re focusing on the rights of every human. As Jarrah Hodge over at Gender Focus explains, humanism “includes a commitment to the rational and scientific and a rejection of the idea of divine and supernatural powers.” It’s not about rights or equal opportunities, or at least not centrally, and using it in that context seriously misuses the term. Humanists Against Feminism is a genuine thing that exists.

I do get that it’s more a fun turn of phrase than an actual position, but if there’s one thing you know if you’re a committed feminist, it’s that words matter. (It’s not that Sarah Jessica Parker isn’t a philosophical humanist, either. Maybe she is!)

Why “Equalist” Isn’t As Useful Either

The whole essence of feminism is that it focuses on the disadvantages and inequality of one particular group: women. Which is why saying “But I believe in the equality of everybody!” is kind of missing the point.

Just because you believe everybody should have the same rights doesn’t mean they do. This is the key bit: feminism is about tackling the world as it actually is, where one particular gender group is being discriminated against. While the end result, hopefully, is equality for all, what’s happening right now is an environment of wide-ranging discrimination against women, and that needs to be addressed for equality to be created. Saying you’re an “equalist” is like saying you believe in a world of well-built houses when half the materials used to make houses are burnt or rotten. The house can’t be built unless those materials are fixed.

To Be More Inclusive, We Need To Change Feminism Itself, Not The Word Feminism

2015-11-16-1447687639-7401908-65dc295066c801338ff00e17bac22e39.jpg

Using the word “feminism” shouldn’t prevent people from seeing other aspects of inequality within the movement. The whole concept of “intersectional feminism” was founded to try and broaden our understanding of discrimination against women, and make it clear that sexism is inextricably linked to race, class, and other factors.

The famous idea of “womanism,” as coined by author Alice Walker, is an attempt to answer one bit of this exclusionary issue — how can women of color feel comfortable and heard in a movement hugely dominated, throughout history, by white women? It’s an ongoing conversation, and it’s important for everybody to have a space where they feel their struggle is the focus. But replacing feminism with something that doesn’t acknowledge anybody’s struggle? In my opinion, that is taking it too far.

The Bottom Line

Part of the word feminism’s value is in its history. It’s a word that acknowledges the past struggles of people who’ve fought, sometimes against truly horrendous opposition, for the same values, even if they didn’t use the same term. From proto-feminists through to the suffragettes, the Gloria Steinems and the people protecting Planned Parenthoods, it’s a word that wears its history prominently — and a great deal of that history needs to be celebrated, even if it’s complicated (which it often is). Remembering doesn’t mean that you agree with all of it, just that you know it’s there.

It’s also, frankly, the best word we’ve got. It is, in its purest form, about improving the status of women as a group in the world — and there is no way in which that struggle is even close to over. The UN estimates that increasing women’s participation in the workforce and giving them equal pay worldwide would raise the world economy’s value by $ 17 trillion. Yep. That’s trillions.

It may be seen by some as an “aggressive” term, but when you’re faced with situations like constant everyday misogynist bullying, a rape rate increase of 29 percent in the U.K. in the past year, 15 million girls worldwide being forced into marriage as children every year, and countless other bits of evidence that women are still second-class citizens, it’s necessary to be aggressive.

Feminism needs to acknowledge and give status to people who aren’t just white, middle-class, cis, and able-bodied, but at least we’re beginning to have that conversation openly. And, frankly, there’s no other word in the world that does what it does and encapsulates what it means — at least not yet. Long live the f-word.

The Rectangle Is Still Golden

Despite recent claims, the golden ratio is more interesting than ever.

2015-10-18-1445180296-8043168-parthenon_composite.jpg
The Parthenon often is said to follow the proportions known as the “golden ratio.” Left: Mlenny Photography/Getty Images; Right: Gyorgy Doczi, The Power of Limits: Proportional Harmonies in Nature, Art & Architecture.

“It’s bullshit.”

That’s how Fast Company summed up the golden ratio in April. According to writer John Brownlee, that mainstay of art appreciation classes and junior-high geometry is “total nonsense,” “an urban legend, a myth, a design unicorn.”

Interest goes back to ancient Greece or even earlier. In 300 BC, Euclid explained that the “golden ratio,” or Phi, occurs when a line can be divided into two segments so that the ratio of the overall line to the longer segment matches the ratio of the longer to the shorter. Subtract a square from a golden rectangle, and what remains is another golden rectangle, and so on and so on. Astronomer Johannes Kepler called Phi geometry’s “precious jewel,” and Renaissance artists considered it the “divine proportion.” The golden rectangle appears — or is said to appear — in works of art and architecture throughout history.

“Many designers don’t use it,” complains Brownlee, “and if they do, they vastly discount its importance.” After acknowledging that “greats like Le Corbusier” used the golden ratio in their work, he devotes nearly a third of his article to quoting architects and designers who don’t: “It’s important as a tool, but not a rule” (Yves Béhar). What “rule” does he mean? As an architect with 25 years of experience, I don’t recall anyone ever suggesting that the golden rectangle should be considered aesthetic law or even a common technique. Generally architects associate it with a few historical structures, such as the Parthenon, whose façade approximates the ratio. That was 2,500 years ago.

Nevertheless, Brownlee’s chief concern with the golden rectangle is that “there’s no science to really back it up.” The Stanford mathematics professor Keith Devlin tells him, “Strictly speaking, it’s impossible for anything in the real-world to fall into the golden ratio, because it’s an irrational number,” one that cannot be represented as terminating or repeating decimals. Phi is rounded off as 1.618, but its true value is 1.618033988749894848204586834… (ad infinitum). It’s like Pi, writes Brownlee: “Just as it’s impossible to find a perfect circle in the real world, the golden ratio cannot strictly be applied to any real world object. It’s always going to be a little off.”

Reading this, you might think that satisfying circles don’t exist “in the real world.” What do you think of the rose window at Notre Dame, or the oculus of the Pantheon? Their arithmetic imperfection drives you crazy, right?

“Those who believe the golden ratio is the hidden math behind beauty,” Brownlee declares, “are falling for a 150-year-old scam.” He doesn’t fully explain the “scam” or exactly who is falling for it, but regardless he blames two people — the Renaissance mathematician Luca Pacioli and the 19th-Century psychologist Adolf Zeising. Yet, they were less interested in the “real world” than they were in what Zeising called “the spiritual ideal of beauty” and Pacioli, a Franciscan friar, referred to as “heavenly virtue”: “We expect in this most useful discourse God himself to come.” Phi’s irrationality doesn’t refute their interest–it explains it. The golden ratio intrigued them because it hints at infinity, invoking a Platonic order that transcends earthly experience.

2015-10-18-1445180432-9009119-Fechner.jpg
In the 1870s, Gustav Fechner asked 350 people to choose which rectangles they liked most. 76 percent preferred the three closest to the golden ratio, and half those chose the one closest to Phi. Illustration by the author.

Brownlee doesn’t mention Gustav Fechner, the German physicist and psychologist who in the 1870s was the first to attempt an empirical study of whether people have an aesthetic preference for the golden rectangle. When he showed ten rectangles of various proportions to a few hundred people, 76 percent preferred the three most similar to the golden ratio, while half that group preferred the closest approximation of Phi (1.62). Mario Livio, whom Brownlee names as “the guy who literally wrote the book on the golden ratio,” writes that experiments attempting to repeat Fechner’s results have been inconclusive, but he points to a 1980 study demonstrating “moderately good evidence for the phenomenon which Fechner championed.” A widely cited 1995 paper shows that much of the criticism of Fechner’s experiment is clouded by “erroneous beliefs” about his procedures and concludes that “there seems to be, in fact, real psychological effects associated with the golden section.” In 2007, neuroscientists at the University of Parma found that images very close to the golden ratio stimulated more activity in parts of the brain associated with emotion.

If that’s true, what accounts for it? Why would we prefer certain proportions over others? In the 1960s, a group of American psychologists offered an intriguing explanation — that the golden ratio relates to the shape of the human visual field. We prefer the image, so the theory goes, because it most matches the frame around our picture of the world. This came to be known as the “perimetric hypothesis.”

In 2009, Duke engineering professor Adrian Bejan offered proof. According to his calculations, the human eyes can scan an image fastest when its shape is a golden rectangle. Why is this important? As with many cultural and aesthetic preferences, there’s an evolutionary explanation: The more quickly early humans could process their surroundings, the safer they were. “The shape of the image matters to how the image is perceived, understood and recorded,” explains Bejan, who found that for a given area the proportions most quickly processed are closest to the golden rectangle. They aid the flow of information “from the plane to the brain.”

2015-10-19-1445255064-4048500-BejanBinocularEyes.jpg
In 2009, a Duke Professor proved that ratios close to Phi can be processed by the eye and brain more quickly. After Adrian Bejan, et al.

But, insists Brownlee, images in the “real world” are not precise golden rectangles: “The iPad’s 3:2 display, or the 16:9 display on your HDTV all ‘float around it’… It’s always going to be a little off.'” According to Bejan, “a little off” is precisely the point. Because proportions similar to the golden ratio occur in very large numbers, he explains, they are a natural phenomena, so they obey the laws of nature — the laws physics — not necessarily the laws of mathematics: “The physics phenomenon is not Phi itself. No one has found and measured Phi on an object in nature… The physics phenomenon is the emergence of shapes that resemble Phi.” Figures that appeal to us need not match a mathematically perfect image, since we naturally seek out shapes that come close.

Yet, Brownlee claims there is no scientific evidence to support “the notion that the golden ratio had any bearing on why we find certain objects like the Parthenon or the Mona Lisa aesthetically pleasing.” If he did his homework, no doubt he came across Bejan’s work. “The physics basis for the human preference for rectangular frames that ‘resemble’ the golden ratio is easy to find on Google,” Bejan tells me. “So he must have skipped it on purpose, to fit his narrative.”

Should the golden ratio be applied as a “rule” to govern all design? No, but behind such techniques is a growing wealth of research that can help designers understand better why people treasure some things and not others. As one example, the golden ratio shows how the mechanics of attraction can help us create images, objects and places that resonate with more people and create greater lasting value.

These Comics Absolutely Nail Why We Still Need Feminism

Cartoons and humor make a good pair. Add a side of feminism and you get Rebecca Cohen’s spot-on illustrations.

The cartoonist, who lives in Berkeley, Calif., spreads a feminist message on her Tumblr with illustrations that are both comedic and relatable.

rebecca cohen feminist comic

Cohen explained that her blend of cartoons, comedy and feminism grabs people’s attention and helps break down the stereotypes she’s encountered.

“Feminists get a bad rap as having no sense of humor, and I want to counter that image,” she said in an email to The Huffington Post.

Cohen is also the mind behind Gyno-Star, a female superhero she invented in high school who fights “the forces of evil and male chauvinism.”

Though the cartoons have an obvious layer of humor, Cohen’s work takes on serious issues women face, such as sexual assault. She also uses her work to highlight women making a difference. One of her recent cartoons, for instance, features Bree Newsome, the woman who took down the Confederate flag in South Carolina.

As for her feminist influences, Cohen looks to activists. She also finds inspiration in the “amazing network of feminists online.”

“Hearing from trans women and women of color and women with disabilities and women who live their lives at all these different intersections of oppression — that has hugely influenced and expanded the way I think about feminism,” she said.

Aside from this supportive community, Cohen said she’s gotten her share of hate for her work. “Just read my Twitter mentions,” she said. But no comment, tweet or message will stand in her way.

“If someone wants to look me in the eye and tell me that all people have the same rights and opportunities and nobody in this country is facing discrimination, they’re welcome to try.”

See below for more of Cohen’s illustrations and support her work through Patreon.

The Bridal Shower: How (On Earth) Is THIS Still A Thing?

Ever since I started watching comedian John Oliver’s “Last Week Tonight” on HBO, I’ve been yearning to write this piece. I know it’s another, “WTF? If you write that, you will probably lose a few friends” kind of piece (see 17 Things Not To Say To A Friend With Breast Cancer) but I’m taking the plunge anyway. It’s got to be the cancer. I think it’s making me bold.

John Oliver does a great segment called, How Is THIS Still A Thing? If you’ve never watched Mr. Oliver, you may want to check it out — perhaps start with this one about the Commonwealth Games. From the moment I started laughing hysterically over this three-minute video: Daylight Saving Time: How is This Still A Thing? I was hooked.

Immediately, I started thinking of my own “How Is This Still A Thing?” scenarios. The bridal shower was the first thing that came to mind. I took notes. I started writing. I asked around. I found that no one — young, old or in between, really liked attending a bridal shower, but I was still too much of a wus to write the piece. My friend’s daughter was engaged. Might there be a bridal shower in my future? Might I be giving the bridal shower?

But now my friend’s daughter’s is on her honeymoon, there was (gratefully) no bridal shower, and I am safe (I think) to tell it as I see it.

If you are like me, you’ve probably been invited to a wedding (or eight) this summer, right?

You are, of course, appropriately thrilled for the couple. Weddings are awesome, so you had no problem reserving, say, your last three-day weekend of the summer — to travel to Detroit for the festivities. You “happily” also spent last weekend (the really beautiful one) traveling to the engagement party in Nowheresville, Illinois.

So when the evite comes from Aunt Rose, even though no travel is required, if you are like me (hopefully you are nicer), maybe this is the first thing that runs through your mind:

“Really, what the F$ $ k could they possibly want with me now?”

And then you realize that, of course … they want you to attend the bridal shower!

And maybe you think, “Really? Is there yet another gift giving opportunity that requires my butt to be somewhere other than a beach chair on a beautiful Sunday afternoon?”

So what’s the deal with the bridal shower?

According to Miss Abigail, the custom goes back a long way — it grew out of dowry practice. Legend has it that in the early 1800s, a beautiful Dutch girl gave her heart to a very poor, but very good-hearted, village miller.

Everyone in the town loved and was happy for the couple … everyone except for the girl’s very mean father, who insisted that the girl not marry the miller, but instead marry a very rich, fat, old, ugly guy. If she married for true love, her father threatened, she would lose her dowry.

So the people from the village each thought of a gift they could contribute to the couple to make up a dowry, so she could marry for love. They “showered” her with gifts, giving her a finer dowry than her father ever could! True love prevailed, and the bridal “shower” tradition was born.

Happy story right?

But none of this makes sense any more. Today, bridal showers are totally superfluous and “mostly joyless” (a recent description from my good friend who attended one the other day) events. It’s not about the love — it’s just about getting more “stuff.” It’s passé, defunct, it’s totally lame.

None of the brides I know have dowries. They have jobs. Many of them damn good ones. They can afford lots of stuff on their own, and most receive a slew of lovely things as engagement and wedding gifts. Do they really need more?

Other than the mother of the bride, and perhaps the bride herself (after all, it is her turn — she had to suffer through her friends’ showers) no one really wants to be there. Because why would anyone want to be inside from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on a beautiful Saturday in May watching a fully grown adult open gifts?

All of the brides I know have been living on their own for years — with their partners, or with girlfriends, or on their own. They have matching wine glasses, nicer underwear, and a better Nespresso machine than I do.

So Really, how is this still a thing?

How many occasions do we need to talk, eat, drink and gather together to honor the bride? The wedding, the engagement party, and for the young ones — the bachelorette party … isn’t that enough of a commitment of both time and money?

Does anyone really want to play a “get to know you game?”

Does any adult really want to sit around and watch another adult awkwardly open gifts?

“OMG a Scan Pan? How did you know?”

“Um … because you registered for it?” When did this not become the tackiest thing ever?

Is there such a thing as an “awesome” bridal shower? I don’t think there is enough alcohol in the world…

So, Mr. Oliver, please — take this on. Because, really, Bridal showers? How is THIS still a thing?

P.S. I probably don’t have to worry about getting invited to many bridal showers in the future, but if by chance the invitation was in the mail when this post was published (I am so screwed) … I was JK about all this. I’d love to attend. Where did you say the bride registered?

Oliver Peoples Box Set by Byredo

Cooler (potentially younger) dads will already know about niche fragrance house Byredo and optical enthusiasts Oliver Peoples. The two brands have collaborated in a “synesthetic” project that demonstrates the influence of color on smell.

The new Oliver Peoples box set includes a pair of limited edition specs along with a bottle of Byredo’s new eau de parfum (also named Oliver Peoples — natch). The specs are available in three different photochromic lens colors including Indigo, Champagne and Green; the bottle will match the lens color you chose. The idea here is that the color you pick out will invariably have an effect on what you smell most in the multi-faceted fragrance. Weird but true. You may pick out anything from the juniper berries and Californian Lemon in the top of the fragrance to the musks, warm sand and patchouli that are deeper in the mix. And if the sensory illusion is completely lost on you, you can always buy the fragrance separately — it smells just as good without tinted specs.

Humble Plumber Wins $136 Million Lottery, Still Wants To Continue Working

NEW YORK (AP) — A Staten Island plumber who won a $ 136 million Powerball jackpot said Thursday he wants to keep working — but also plans to “relax a little more.”

Anthony Perosi, 56, left his March 14 ticket pinned to the wall behind a basement pipe for six weeks.

The winner, Anthony Perosi, on right, and his son, Anthony Perosi III.

A friend had told him where the winning ticket had been purchased, but she thought a teacher had won. So he took his time checking the numbers, which he’d chosen randomly.

“When I saw all the numbers matched up, I panicked,” Perosi said. “I immediately called my son and asked him to come over right away!”

Anthony Perosi III did what he was told.

“I couldn’t believe what I was seeing,” said the 27-year-old. “I checked the numbers on my phone and it has been surreal ever since.”

The cash value of the ticket came to $ 88.5 million. The father decided to share his winnings with his son, split 70-30. So dad gets a net lump sum of $ 38.6 million after required withholdings, and son pockets $ 16.5 million.

“I honestly don’t know what my plans are right now,” said the elder Perosi. “I want to continue to work, but will be able to relax a little more and not have any worries financially.”

“I don’t have words for it,” said the son. “It’s just unbelievable and a big relief; like a big weight is off my shoulders. I’ll probably pay some bills, take a vacation, and then really take some time to think and plan for the future.”
