Lululemon’s China Stores Respond to Coronavirus Outbreak

Lululemon is tweaking its China operations in response to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.
The athleticwear brand issued an update on Friday saying that most of its 38 stores in China have been closed since Feb. 3, but that some of the units are “now operating on a reduced schedule.”
Representatives for Lululemon could not immediately be reached for comment on what the “reduced schedule” involves and how many stores it affects. The company said its e-commerce site continues to operate.

“We’re inspired by the resilience and commitment of our team in China as we navigate the emerging impacts of the coronavirus,” Lululemon chief executive officer Calvin McDonald said in a statement. “The safety of our people is our highest priority, and we are adjusting store operations based upon the recommendations of local authorities.”
“Despite the current disruption to our growing business in China, we remain confident in the long-term opportunities this market holds for Lululemon,” he said.
The company said it has been working with local authorities to figure out decisions on store operations there, and said it expects to issue another update during its next earnings call scheduled for March.
The outbreak still appears to be concentrated in China, where it has sickened at least

Rodd & Gunn to Add Two Northern California Stores

Rodd & Gunn is continuing its rollout in the American market.
The New Zealand-based men’s brand will add two more stores in the San Francisco Bay area this year, joining a unit at the Stanford Shopping Center, which opened in 2019, and an existing shop-in-shop inside Wingtip, a conglomerate of shops in the city’s financial district.
The openings will bring Rodd & Gunn’s total U.S. store count to 10 including Newport Beach, Los Angeles and San Diego in California, in addition to the DUMBO area of Brooklyn, Greenwich, Conn., Dallas and Bellevue, Wash. The new stores will be located at the newly expanded Westfield Valley Fair in Santa Clara, which will open in March, and Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek, slated for a July debut.
“We’re excited to continue our growth here in such a dynamic hub of innovation and influence,” said Mike Beagley, chief executive officer of Rodd & Gunn. “The Bay Area perfectly aligns with our brand’s target demographic of men who appreciate premium quality, effortless style and clothes that can be worn for work, play and everything in between.”
Rodd & Gunn’s heritage dates to 1946, when the brand’s English Pointer logo was used on a line of New Zealand-made shirts.

Hong Kong Designers Look to Open U.S. Stores

Fashion Hong Kong designers wore optimistic faces as their collective looks for fall/winter 2020 walked the runway at Manhattan’s Spring Studios. If they were feeling anxious over the coronavirus, they showed no signs. More concerning to the designers was the state of retail in the U.S. Designers came to New York Fashion Week to open doors — both at department and specialty stores, and their own boutiques. They quickly learned that the fashion and retail industries are in the throes of convulsive change with generational shifts in consumer shopping behavior.

“This is our third time here,” said Lary Cheung, who with Yi Chan designs Heaven Please. “In New York, there are more and more young brands coming. We have three stores in Hong Kong. Brands need ideas, not only with their stores, not only by their clothes, but also their site. In Hong Kong, we have our shops and we make installations at our shops to disseminate ideas.
“Having three stores is very important,” Cheung added. “We’re always looking for somewhere to have a store in New York, really. Yeah, we have an online shop,

Psycho Bunny Adding Four Stores in U.S. This Fall

Psycho Bunny is turning its gaze to retail.
The men’s brand with the slightly maniacal logo of rabbit with pink ears and its teeth hanging over a skull-and-crossbones, is opening four stores this fall in the U.S.
Following a successful retail debut last October in Aventura, Fla., the New York-based label is opening full-price stores in Hollywood, Fla., Atlanta and Las Vegas as well as its first outlet in Orlando, Fla.
The Hollywood store opened at the end of last month in the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and is 1,475 square feet. The 1,500-square-foot Atlanta store in the Lenox Square mall opened today and will be followed by an 1,800-square-foot unit in the Forum Shops at Caesars in Las Vegas.
The outlet store, which will measure 1,870 square feet, will initially open as a pop-up for the holiday season before being transformed into a permanent location. This is the same tactic Psycho Bunny used with its first store in Aventura.
All of the stores will feature brightly colored interiors and giant neon bunny motifs.
Robert Goldman, Psycho Bunny’s cofounder, said: “Following the success of Aventura, we focused on top markets for our continued retail expansion. Our business continues to scale and strengthen; now couldn’t have

China tells online stores to stop selling e-cigarettes

China tells online stores to stop selling e-cigarettesE-cigarette sales bans are quickly becoming an international phenomenon. China's tobacco regulators have asked online shopping companies to "temporarily" close online stores that sell e-cigarettes — effectively, it's banning e-cig sales on the internet. Officials argued in the notice that this was to protect the "physical and mental health of minors," echoing concerns in the US.

Untuckit to Open First Overseas Stores in London

Untuckit is taking its message across the pond.
The brand that got its start selling shirts to men that are designed not to be tucked into pants will open its first two stores outside the U.S. this fall.
Two units, in Covent Garden and Westfield London, will debut on Nov. 5. They will both measure around 1,600 square feet and will carry the full selection of the brand’s men’s apparel. The retail openings will be supported by the launch of a U.K.-specific web site.
The company was created by Chris Riccobono, who convinced his Columbia University business school classmate Aaron Sanandres to develop a business to address the issue that they couldn’t find a casual shirt that fit correctly when untucked. So they launched a direct-to-consumer web site with $ 150,000 in seed money from friends and family in 2011 and sold shirts that were shorter with a contoured hemline in a wide variety of fits. The brand was successful out of the box and by 2016 “put $ 8 million on the books,” Riccobono said.

Suitsupply Opening Concession Shops in Nordstrom Stores

Suitsupply is partnering with Nordstrom on a multicity strategy that will find the Amsterdam-based company opening shops within several Nordstrom units in North America this fall.
The concession shops will be in the Pacific Centre store in Vancouver, British Columbia; Eaton Centre and Yorkdale Shopping Centre in Toronto; Del Amo Fashion Center in Torrance, Calif., and Oakbrook Center in Oakbrook, Ill. Suitsupply will also be available at Nordstrom online.
Fokke de Jong, founder and chief executive officer, said he had been speaking to Nordstrom for “a long time” to see how the two companies could partner. Now with the remodeling that has been done in the men’s stores, Suitsupply was finally able to find appropriate space to build and open shops. “It was just a matter of finding the right model and space.”
The shops generally measure between 800 and 1,000 square feet and are staffed by Suitsupply employees; there are also tailors on site in each unit to handle alterations. The shops will also offer a full custom-made option.
“From a department store point of view,” de Jong said, “Nordstrom is very customer service-focused and runs their business like we run our freestanding stores. There’s a very mutual approach to the business.”

Direct-to-Consumer Jeweler Aurate Plants First Two Retail Stores

Aurate has begun putting its $ 13 million in funding to use. The direct-to-consumer jewelry label, which in June revealed a significant series A funding, will open its first two permanent retail locations on Saturday in New York City.
The brand, which has been operating a pop-up shop in Manhattan to test the market, will open stores in SoHo and on Madison Avenue.
The uptown store at 1015 Madison Avenue measures 916 square feet, while its location at 154 Spring Street is slightly larger at 1,242 square feet. Both locations feature experiential technology that introduces consumers to the raw materials and production methods enlisted to create Aurate jewelry. The stores were designed by female-led architecture firm Alda Ly, which is also responsible for the viral women’s coworking space, The Wing.
“Being that Aurate is a direct-to-consumer brand we have the freedom and flexibility to implement experimental strategies, and opening retail locations is no different. The installations, paying homage to the natural and sustainable elements of our jewelry, throughout the store create a truly immersive experience and are a testament to the brand’s innovative nature,” said Aurate cofounder Bouchra Ezzahraoui.
Cofounder Sophie Kahn added: “By using data collected in-store to help create the finalized experience, we’re

Victoria’s Secret Now Has Images of Transgender and Plus-size Models in Stores

NEW YORK — Victoria’s Secret is continuing its efforts to be more inclusive.
Starting this month, Victoria’s Secret is collaborating with British designer Emily Bendell. See-through bras, lacy panties, bodysuits with sharp geometric lines and garter belts in shades of crimson, black and white can be found at victoriassecret.com and in seven select stores in the U.S. and U.K. as part of the Bluebella collection, Bendell’s brand.
The collection has a twist — that’s because it fulfills parent company L Brands Inc.’s promise to update its marketing strategy. Transgender model and actress May Simón Lifschitz and plus-size model Ali Tate Cutler, along with Olivia Sang and Laura Rakhman-Kidd, can be seen in advertisements for the collection on the company’s web site and on images inside and outside of the stores carrying the line. These include New York’s flagship along Fifth Avenue and London’s Bond Street store.
“It has been wonderful working with Emily and the entire Bluebella team on the campaign,” said a Victoria’s Secret spokesperson. “We are excited to feature these amazing models in bringing this collaboration to life.”
The spokesperson would not comment on whether the models would be used for other Victoria’s Secret campaigns or events.

What to Watch: More Tailored Aesthetic Hitting Men’s Stores for Fall

Fall is coming, and with it, men will be leaving their shorts and flip-flops in the back of the closet — and this year reaching for a blazer.
Although streetwear and ath-leisurewear have been all the rage in the men’s market for the past few years, the pendulum has begun to swing back in the other direction. The first hint came during the fall runway shows in Europe last January when there was an undeniable shift toward a more dressed-up aesthetic. Those looks are just now hitting the retail floors, raising the spirits of merchants who have historically built their businesses on the back of men’s suits and sport coats.
Although their expectations are high, stores also realize they can’t just hang a sea of navy, black and gray suits interspersed with the occasional patterned sport coat on their floors any more and expect them to sell. Streetwear and activewear have had an indelible impact on the industry and men are not looking for their father’s — or even their grandfather’s — suits. Guys have gotten used to be being comfortable and they’re searching for features that will let them move while keeping them cool and dry.

Men’s Stores Are Changing the Rules of Retailing

NEW YORK — The rules of the game have changed and independent men’s specialty stores that have adapted to the new normal are on a winning streak.
Whether it’s a de-emphasis of traditional tailored clothing — long the bread and butter of independent retailers — or a dramatic shift in their vendor mix, the survivors have learned to navigate the current climate.
Many larger brands are opening their own stores — either brick-and-mortar or virtual — leaving independents hard-pressed to compete. And customers searching the Internet to compare prices on commonly found labels has also prompted stores to look elsewhere.
“We’re finally at a tipping point,” said Ken Giddon, president of Rothman’s. “The relationship between retailers and vendors has to be reworked. Retailers are waking up to the fact that things have to change. They can’t keep their heads in the sand anymore on pricing.”
He wasn’t alone. Mike Zack, owner of Circa 2000 in Plano, Tex., has been banging the same drum for a while now. “It’s a whole new world today,” he said. “We’re completely changing our vendor structure and have gotten rid of most of the big brands like Peter Millar and Tommy Bahama. Scotch & Soda to Open Additional Stores in New York and Los Angeles

Scotch & Soda is extending its U.S. retail presence.
The Amsterdam-based casual sportswear brand opened a Beverly Hills location this month and will open a Williamsburg, Brooklyn, unit in November.
The Beverly Hills location will be Scotch & Soda’s second Los Angeles shop — it has a store in Venice Beach. The 1,500-square-foot space at 365 North Beverly Drive carries both the men’s and women’s collections. The store features Scotch & Soda’s interior design signatures — brass fittings, glass cabinets and wooden herringbone flooring — with additions including a wall adorned with hanging plants and a facade made from handmade Moroccan tiles.
The Williamsburg store joins Scotch & Soda’s three New York City boutiques. The retailer opened a Greenwich Village shop in May. The 1,800-square-foot Williamsburg unit will be located at 240-242 Bedford Avenue and also carry both the men’s and women’s assortments. The store, which is housed in a former industrial factory hall, will boast high ceilings along with concrete and steel details.
In 2014, the brand recruited Ari Hoffman, previously of Gant and Benetton, to serve as chief executive officer of its U.S. operations. Hoffman was tasked with further developing the retailer’s U.S. business. Scotch & Soda has more than 150 stores

Closing the Gap: Chain to Close 25% of Its North American Stores

Today Gap Inc. announced plans to shutter 175 stores across North America. In addition to the closings, the company will cut 250 jobs at its headquarters in San Francisco.

gap-jeans-store

While Gap will still operate 800 stores across the country—including 300 outlet stores—today’s announcements mark a harbinger of change for the clothing chain. Earlier this year Rebekka Bay, creative director and executive vice president for Gap Global Design, left the company. Her title was eliminated and the company hired C. Wonder alumna Wendi Goldman as its executive vice president of product design and development in late February.

“These decisions are very difficult, knowing they will affect a number of our valued employees, but we are confident they are necessary to help create a winning future for our employees, our customers and our shareholders,” said Gap global president Jeff Kirwan.

The 2007-2012 World Outlook for Radio, Television, and Consumer Electronics Stores

The 2007-2012 World Outlook for Radio, Television, and Consumer Electronics Stores

INTRODUCTIONOVERVIEWThis study covers the world outlook for radio, television, and consumer electronics stores across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-à-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved. This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the 230 countries of the world). This study gives, however, my estimates for the worldwide latent demand, or the P.I.E, for radio, television, and consumer electronics stores. It also shows how the P.I.E. is divided across the world’s regional and national markets. For each country, I also show my estimates of how the P.I.E. grows over time (positive or negative growth). In order to make these estimates, a multi-stage methodology was employed that is often taught in courses on international strategic planning at graduate schools of business.

Thalhimers Department Stores

Thalhimers Department Stores

Thalhimers was founded in Richmond in 1842 by German Jewish immigrant William Thalhimer as a humble dry goods store. It expanded over the years to become a 26-store chain across the Southeast under the leadership of William’s great-grandson, William B. Thalhimer Jr. It boasted the latest in clothing, shoes, and accessories for the entire family, the most modern of housewares, and gourmet foods and baked goods, including the iconic six-layer chocolate cake. Through decades of dramatic political and social change, Thalhimers stood strong, guided by the overarching philosophies of honesty, integrity, quality, and service. Loyal and devoted employees were the heart of Thalhimers, becoming part of the extended Thalhimer family. Sadly, in 1992, as a result of retail consolidation, the Thalhimer name was dropped and the flagship downtown Richmond store closed. A 150-year legacy ended, leaving behind cherished memories, stories, and images.

Millions In Cocaine Delivered To German Grocery Stores, Plus Bananas

Whoops!

Nearly 400 kilograms of cocaine were hidden in banana shipments sent to Aldi supermarkets in and around Berlin, Germany, earlier this week, according to news site The Local. Police spokesman Stefan Redlich called the error a “logistical mistake,” Agence France-Presse reported.

German police initially valued the haul at close to $ 17 million, but they may have lowballed it. An updated statement said the drugs had a high degree of purity and a street price of nearly $ 44 million.

The shipments are presumed to have traveled a well-known drug smuggling route from Colombia to Europe, Germany’s Deutsche Welle reported. Investigators were reportedly still searching through Aldi’s banana supply for other illicit imports.

Amazingly, this is not the first time that Aldi stores in Germany have received cocaine with their bananas. In January 2014, The Local reported that police had found 140 kilos of the drug in those supermarkets in what was hailed as the second-largest bust in Berlin in 35 years.

Apple Watch Debuts in London, Paris Stores

TIME TRAVELERS: Apple Watch made its European retail debut on Friday morning with upscale shop-in-shops at Selfridges in London, where the brand filled the windows with an installation of iridescent butterflies, and Galeries Lafayette in Paris.
The stores were packed with mostly male shoppers testing out the 38 iterations of the multitasking watch that’s part personal trainer and executive assistant, part navigation device and instant chat tool. Oh, and it tells the time, too.
“This is just fabulous: It syncs with the iPhone, which means you have the freedom to leave your phone on your desk and still be able to check on everything,” said Herbert Yip, a Hong Kong native who was visiting London with his family.
Yip said he was leaning toward ordering the sports model. “I was going to buy another device to use as my health kit, but when I knew the Apple was coming out with its own, I waited,” he explained.
The Apple Watch shop at Selfridges is located in the Wonder Room on the ground floor, which is also home to brands such as Bulgari, Chopard, Cartier and Tiffany & Co.
Apple has filled the space — which is permanent and spans about more than 1,000 square feet — with towering ficus

7 Clothing Stores With Home Decor Departments Are Truly The Best Of Both Worlds

The only thing better than picking up an amazing new outfit? Nabbing some fabulous home decor while you’re at it. We don’t mean a cute little jewelry tray you stumbled upon in the accessories section — we’re talking full-blown furniture options, lighting and all the accents you could ever hope for. Basically, everything you’d find at, say, HomeGoods or West Elm, only alongside some more fashion-oriented finds.

And the best part? Many of these home departments are either growing, like the one at Anthropologie, or are on the newer side and ready to expand their aesthetic to home accents, like the ones at Nanette Lepore.

So go ahead, get your one-stop shopping on.

ModCloth

If you have a retro taste in decor and long for the perfect quirky throw pillow, this is the place for you. Though they don’t sell furniture, ModCloth an eclectic assortment of everything else you need to make your home a bit more charming.

Urban Outfitters

From furniture to ultra-trendy shelving (and everything in between), you can find something that’s a perfect combo of hipster and chic for every room in the house. And don’t forget about the humorous accessories selection with all of the pop-culture references you can think of.

Anthropologie

Looking for a more sophisticated, European version of Urban Outfitters’ home collection? You’ll find it here. They offer just as much, if not more, in terms of furniture, accents and gorgeous hardware, but with a more romantic, feminine touch.

H&M

Offering possibly the most extensive array of accents and accessories from this list, the H&M home department has something for every taste. Though you won’t find furniture here, you can find pillows for the edgier, more modern home, kitchen accessories and plates for the rustic abode and even personality-filled coasters that work in any space.

Kate Spade

The same colorfully preppy aesthetic seen in Kate Spade handbags and jewelry is what you’ll find in their kitchen and office supplies. There’s also an “odds and ends” category filled with fun finds like mustached bottle openers, and dinnerware collections that belong in the registry of your dreams.

Nanette Lepore

This is the perfect destination if you’re looking for feminine, boho-style bedding and textiles reminiscent of the designer’s equally bohemian fashion collections.

Ralph Lauren

If you’re looking for something clean, classic and luxurious, you cannot go wrong with Ralph Lauren. While the designer brand will cost you a bit more, the extensive array of furniture and accent pieces is pretty much as timeless as the Polo logo itself. With that in mind, go here if you’re ready to make a long-term investment in say bedding or lighting for your home.

Ikea Advertises Adoptable Dogs In Stores, Because Every Home Needs A Rescue Pup

Furniture might help make a living space comfortable, but nothing makes a house a home like a furry best friend.

With that in mind, some Ikea stores are now featuring cardboard cutouts of adoptable dogs in their showrooms amid the furniture, AFP Relaxnews reported. The cutouts have tags on them with QR codes that shoppers can scan to learn more about the individual dogs.

The idea to display the pets inside the store started in Singapore as a collaboration between Ikea and two animal shelters, according to Business Insider. Together they formed the project Home for Hope.

Now, an Ikea store in Tempe, Arizona, is joining in on the innovative plan to find homes for rescue animals.

“We thought it was a perfect way to show people what their home would look like with a pet in it,” Becky Blaine, Ikea Tempe’s marketing director, told the outlet.

All of the six animals featured in cutouts at the store in Tempe have now been adopted from the Arizona Humane Society, and more cutouts will be exhibited in the store at the end of the month, according to the outlet. At least eight pups have been adopted in Singapore so far, according to the Home for Hope website.
