Lisa Rinna Changes Her Hairdo for the First Time in 20 Years Using Drugstore Dye

As Brandi Glanville once told Lisa Rinna in season 5 of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills: ‘You’ve had the same hairdo for 20 years!” Well, not anymore.

The Melrose Place alum debuted her new darker hairstyle on Watch What Happens Live! on Tuesday, after the third and final part of the RHOBH reunion special aired on Bravo.

“I mean, I wanted to try something new, and you know, I’ve had the same hairdo,” Rinna, 52, explained to host Andy Cohen about her coiffed strands. “For 20 years I’ve had the same hairdo and I thought, ‘Why not?’ You know?”

The mother of two also added that the hair transformation was a bit of a spontaneous decision that was influenced by the recent Met Gala.

Instagram Photo

“I darkened it a little bit. I went to the drugstore last night, and I got this fanciful – I don’t know what it is. It’ll wash out,” she said. “Because my highlights were all crazy all over the place and I thought, ‘I’ll just darken it a little bit.’ I had a vision. It was sort of, like, for the Met Ball, the ‘Manus Machina’ look for the Met Ball.”

So will this darker color be permanent change? “I like my hairdo though,” she clarified. “I really do.”

Instagram Photo

Rinna’s signature, short hairstyle previously featured streaks of honey blonde highlights. She most memorably sported brunette locks in April 2015 when she ditched her shaggy pixie cut for dark Kardashian-esque extensions in response to Glanville’s insults about her hair.

One of the reasons Rinna likes to rock a bob is because husband of close to 20 years Harry Hamlin prefers a shorter ‘do.

Instagram Photo

“Harry likes it. He always says, ‘Keep it short.’ So I like to keep my husband happy; that is not news,” she said during a Access Hollywood co-hosting gig in April 2015.

Coachella’s Man Braids, Face Decals and Dip-Dyed Hair: It’s Time For an Emergency Obsessed or Hot Mess

Coachella’s first weekend has come and gone — so as we look forward to weekend two, we’re left pondering the unexpected style moments that unfolded before our eyes: Kylie Jenner’s rainbow hair, a close-up video of her sister Kendall’s pierced nipple, and of course, Taylor Swift’s shocking platinum blonde shag. But between those big hair moments, there were a variety of other celebrity beauty looks require your vote.

Bold hair color changes are expected during Coachella — but even though we’re used to Katy Perry surprising us with new hues, we weren’t quite ready for her bubblegum pink double topknots that stood out against her black hair, not to mention Bella Thorne‘s messy magenta braids, which seemed be to be harboring every black hair tie that we’ve lost this year.

Comedian Who Lied About Surviving 9/11 Opens Up For The First Time

Comedian Steve Rannazzisi, in his first public comments since he was exposed for lying he was in the World Trade Center during the 9/11 attacks, explained how he believed his deception protected him from “cruel” fellow comedians and defined his career.

Rannazzisi, star of “The League,” apologized Tuesday during a 40-minute interview on Howard Stern’s radio show and addressed last months’ New York Times story that revealed he wasn’t working in the Merrill Lynch office on the 54th floor of the World Trade Center south tower when the north tower was hit. Rannazzisi recounted the fake experience to interviewers for years and claimed the ordeal motivated him to follow his dreams of being an entertainer.

“Do you think of yourself as psychologically disturbed? How do you view yourself after doing this thing?” Stern asked.

“Psychologically disturbed — I don’t know if that’s the way to put it,” Rannazzisi said. “I do see someone and am starting to figure out more about myself: codependency and wanting people to like me and to make people happy.”

The “why” is still unclear, he said.

“It wasn’t calculated at all,” he said. “It was as simple as sitting at the Comedy Store and everyone being like, ‘Hey, you’re from New York?’ ‘Yeah.’ ‘Were you just there? You were around?’ ‘Yeah, I was downtown.’ ‘You worked there?’ ‘Yeah, I did.’”

Within seconds, Rannazzisi said he felt he couldn’t set the record straight.

“You have like 15 seconds, I think, to kind of go, ‘Wait, hold on. Stop. I’m sorry. That’s not true.'” he said. “If you pass that 15 seconds … now, it becomes a thing where you’re like, ‘Now, I have to be the guy that’s very strange and weird and just said I lied about 9/11.’”

Once the fake story gained traction, Rannazzisi said the resulting sympathy gave him security in the brutal comedy community.

“I think it might have been like, comedians are cruel people, especially in the beginning,” he said. “And I kind of was like, well maybe people will not be as mean to me or not make as many jokes about me because they think that this is what I went through.”

When the Times confronted him last month with conflicting versions of his 9/11 story, Rannazzisi responded with a statement confirming that he had lied. The confession may be damning to his career, but he said he feels relief and is glad he can finally apologize.

“I know what I did was terrible, and I know that I hurt a lot of people — people that lost people, people that helped people survive — and those people, those are the people that I truly am sorry,” he said. “That’s why I wanted to come on here.”

Meet ‘Beirut’s Banksy,’ The Artist Who’s Transforming The City One Wall At A Time

Artist Yazan Halwani peels political banners and posters off Beirut’s walls to make room for his murals. Born in the Lebanese capital, Halwani, 22, grew up against the backdrop of political logos stenciled on city walls and faded posters of politicians plastered on street corners, some left over from the civil war that lasted from 1975 to 1990.

In Lebanon, “people usually identify with sectarian or political symbols,” Halwani said. Frustrated with the political fragmentation and sectarian strife on and off the walls of Beirut, he decided to draw the public’s attention to cultural figures that “reunite Lebanese, and Arab citizens, without any divisions.” On walls and buildings in East and West Beirut (which were separated during the civil war), he paints large-scale portraits of Arab poets, musicians and actors, encircled by intricate Arabic calligraphy.

Born a couple of years after the war, Halwani is part of a generation of Lebanese youth pushing, in various ways, for greater unity in Lebanon. With his artwork, he strives to offset decades of political polarization that has resulted in cultural divisions and “a weakening of national identity.”

Referred to as “Beirut’s Banksy” by Arab media outlet Al-Arabiya, Halwani has also produced artwork for international street art events, and his work has appeared in Germany, Singapore and Paris. By taking his calligraphy outside the Arab region, Halwani says, he wants to instigate “cross-cultural conversations” and to inspire a “positive view of the Arab world.”

But it’s his work in Beirut that’s garnering the world’s attention.

Political paralysis is nothing new in Lebanon’s government, which is tenuously balanced according to the country’s religious factions. But it has reached new heights: The country’s parliament has failed to pick a president for more than one year, and its inaction and corruption leaves much of the country without regular access to services like electricity and water. This summer, more than 20,000 tons of garbage has accumulated on Beirut’s streets after a major landfill closed and the government failed to agree on an alternative dump or a new contract for its garbage collection company.

Residents began to protest, resulting in the YouStink campaign decrying their officials. Public frustration peaked last month, with the recent wave of protests in the capital being described as “the biggest show of civil disobedience” in a decade.

Halwani marched in a mass YouStink rally in downtown Beirut on Aug. 22.

“I think the current problem and the main motivation behind my artwork stem from the same reason,” says Halwani. “Sectarian political forces that are working in their own self-interest.”

Halwani won’t write political slogans on Beirut’s walls, though. By painting much less polarizing figures, he subversively proposes an alternative cultural and political narrative: one of unity and harmony.

“I think that what needs to be done on a political level cannot be summed up with a wall tag,” he says.

Along the side of a building in the vibrant district of Hamra, Lebanese singer-actress Sabah peers out onto the street, smiling disarmingly, surrounded by a halo of interwoven Arabic letters that look like snowflakes from afar. Across an orange wall in the lively residential district of Gemmayzeh, Halwani painted beloved musical icon Fairouz, in black, white and grey.

“I want to replace corrupt politics with more positive cultural elements that show the real face of the country,” he says.

Halwani’s street art hasn’t always been propelled by such lofty ambitions. At the age of 14, he was drawn to French hip-hop songs and gangster films. “Everyone wanted to grow up to be a soldier or an actor, but I wanted to be a gangster like these taggers in New York,” he says. He started tagging his name on Beirut’s walls, in bright colors and big letters. Later, however, he experienced what he calls a “critical response” toward his own work. “I realized that what I was doing did not have a shred of identity. It had no relationship to Beirut. That’s why people ignored or destroyed it.”

Around the same time, Halwani borrowed a calligraphy book from his uncle. He quickly discovered that there was a discrepancy between the essence of calligraphy and that of tagging; the former was less about the artist and more about the words (often Quranic verses or folkloric proverbs.). “I was no longer interested in writing my name,” he says.

In fact, he was no longer interested in writing anything at all. The Arabic letters he places around his portraits often don’t make up legible words; they’re more like ornate crossword puzzles. “What I try to do is I try to evoke meaning without having to use the actual word … I use calligraphy to create an Arabic visual language which can be understood by Arabic and non-Arabic speakers alike,” he noted.

Often, he seeks to paint murals that start conversations. On one of the walls in Concord Street is a portrait of a gray-haired man, his eyelids on the verge of caving in, his gaze despondent. His creased forehead is crowned with tufts of white and grey hair. The portrait is of Ali Abdullah, a homeless man who for years had set up residence in the nearby Bliss Street. In January 2013, Beirut’s harsh weather reportedly led to his death. The incident mobilized hundreds of Lebanese youth to launch initiatives to help the homeless.

“After two weeks, everybody forgot about him,” says Halwani. “I decided to repaint him, just to tell people that you do not need to help the homeless only when you hear a tragic story on the news.”

As Halwani was standing in a shopping cart, with blotches of black paint on his shorts and T-shirt, a worn out taxi pulled up by the curb. A teary-eyed driver called Halwani over, and said, “When I saw what you’re doing, I was really touched. I used to see this homeless man on the street.”

Three years later, Halwani is still touched by what happened next: Desperate to give something, anything, back to the artist, the driver offered him a ride. “All I have is this car. If you need to go anywhere, I’m ready to take you,” the driver told him.

A New Survey Says Women Spend More Time Shopping Than Socializing

shoe-shopping-stocksy

There’s part of shopping that’s all about necessity—we all need household basics and food to eat after all. How much time do you think you spend browsing and buying? And, perhaps more interestingly, how much time do you think you spend on it compared to time you do other things? Like, hang with your ladies for a glass of wine and a spot of gossip?

Statistic Brain Research Institute has just broken down the average day in an effort to understand what takes up the majority of our time. Not surprisingly, sleep and work claim the biggest amount of hours (for the ladies, we’re averaging 8.76 hours of sleep and 6.66 of work per day; men work a little more and sleep a little less).

The number we didn’t see coming? Women shop more than socialize, logging 1.3 hours a day versus .73 hours of hang-time (even when you add in time spent on the phone or emailing, it’s still less). It seems a little surprising, but here’s the million-dollar question: what about when you’re shopping with a friend? Does that count as socializing?

My All Time Favorite Beauty Products and Why

Over the years I have tested and tossed a countless number of products. I like to keep up with the current trends and I enjoy testing out new things to find those hidden gems. More often than not, however, end up going back to my tried and true products that I have been using for years. I call these products my classics, and as long as they are on the market they will remain in my beauty arsenal forever. These products have never let me down and have been beneficial to me in my skin care, hair care and over all makeup routine. Below are my all time favorite products and why I love them so much.

Clearasil Daily Clear Daily Face Wash: 6.5 OZ

This face wash has worked wonders for me. It is better than any of the expensive face washes I have tried on the market. It is made from a gentle formula that is fragrance free and has never irritated my skin. I use it twice a day and it always leaves my skin feeling clean and soft.

Olay 4-in-1 Daily Facial Cloths, Normal Skin, 66 Count

These face clothes come in so handy when I’m traveling. They are convenient and work great. I never have to worry about spills in my luggage when using these. They lather up wonderfully and I can use the cloth to get a deeper scrub into my skin. I am always left with skin that feels soft, fresh and clean.

Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask, 16.9-Ounce Jar

I style my hair often and unfortunately that means my hair is exposed to a lot of heat. I leave this mask in my hair for about 10-15 minutes twice a week and it helps put the moisture back in my hair and keeps it looking healthy and shiny.

Batiste Dry Shampoo, Clean and Classic, 6.73 Ounce

I definitely don’t wash my hair everyday. On the in-between days I like to use this dry shampoo to pull out the excess oils in my hair. I have used many dry shampoos and I have found this one to be the best. It doesn’t leave a build up and my hair looks and feels clean even on the days it isn’t washed.

Clarisonic Mia 1 Skin Cleansing System, White

I love this little machine. My skin has never been smoother or brighter. The motion of the bristles gently scrub away imperfections and dead skin. It keeps my pores clean and evens out the texture of my skin. It comes with its own cleaners but I use the cleansers of my choice and still get amazing results.

Tweezerman Stainless Steel Slant Tweezer, Pink

I am a huge advocate of getting your eyebrows professionally done. We all know, however, that sometimes we just don’t get around to it and are left with growing caterpillars above our eyes. For these desperate times I use the Tweezerman Slant Tweezers. These tweezers have the ability to grab hold of the tiniest hairs that I used to struggle with using other brands. They are extremely precise, even on the finest of hairs.

The Balm Mary-lou Manizer Aka The Luminizer Shimmer, Highlighter and Eyeshadow, with Twinbeauty Brush

Highlighting and contouring has been around forever but has recently become a huge trend. Beauty bloggers across the world post instructional videos on how to get the perfect highlight and contour. This product has been a wonderful highlight for me and I believe it is good for any skin tone. It leaves a golden look to the skin providing it with a healthy glow. A little goes a long way with this product so be careful not to overdo it.

Aquaphor Healing Ointment, Dry, Cracked and Irritated Skin Protectant, 14 Ounce

I have suffered from extremely dry skin my whole life. This is a condition that seems even more apparent in the winter months. After I shower I apply this cream all over my body for some dry skin relief. I even carry some in my bag to apply on my hands throughout the day.

Crest 3D White Luxe Whitestrips Professional Effects – Teeth Whitening Kit 20 Treatments

No more $ 400 whitening sessions at the dentist for me. For the past few years I have been using Crest White Strips every 12 to 18 months. The results are always mind blowing. After using these I notice I get a ton of complements on how white my smile is. I no longer have to deal with messy trays and goopy gels. These strips adhere nicely to my teeth and I only have to leave them on for 30 minutes a day. When the treatment is over I am always so impressed with the results.

Beauty Blender Original Blender Sponge – 0.15 oz

I know I talk about this product a lot but I cannot reiterate enough how helpful the beauty blender has been for my own application as well as the application of makeup on my clients. If you want airbrushed results without spending all that money on an airbrush machine I suggest giving this product a try. You wont regret it. I love how smooth my makeup looks after using the beauty blender to apply my foundation.

Olay Complete All Day Moisturizer with Broad Spectrum SPF 15 Normal, 4.0 fl oz

I have been using this product for well over 15 years now. Even when I try to swap out for some of the fancier products I still always come back to this. It does not flake like other moisturizers can and it looks great on the skin with or without makeup. I use this lotion every time I wash my face and it has never failed me. The formula is gentle, it doesn’t clog my pores and it leaves my skin looking hydrated all day.

Born at the Right Time

Born at the Right Time

It is rare in history for people to link their identity with their generation, and even rarer when children and adolescents actually shape society and influence politics. Both phenomena aptly describe the generation born in the decade following the Second World War. These were the baby boomers, viewed by some as the spoiled, selfish generation that had it all, and by others as a shock wave that made love and peace into tangible ideals. In this book, Doug Owram brings us the untold story of this famous generation as it played out its first twenty-five years in Canadian society. Beginning with Dr Spock’s dictate that this particular crop of babies must be treated gently, Owram explores the myth and history surrounding this group, from its beginning at war’s end to the close of the 1960s. The baby boomers wielded extraordinary power right from birth, Owram points out, and laid their claim on history while still in diapers. He sees the generation’s power and sense of self stemming from three factors: its size, its affluent circumstance, and its connection with the 1960s – the fabulous decade of free love, flower power, women’s liberation, drugs, protest marches, and rock ‘n’ roll. From Davy Crockett hats and Barbie dolls to the civil-rights movement and the sexual revolution, the concerns of this single generation became predominant themes for all of society. Thus, Owram’s history of the baby-boomers is in many ways a history of the era. Doug Owram has written extensively on cultural icons, Utopian hopes, and the gap between realities and images – all powerful themes in the story of this idealistic generation. A well-researched, lucid, and humorous book, Born at the Right Time is the first Canadian history of the baby-boomers and the society they helped to shape.

Second Time Round

Second Time Round

Everything was finally falling into place for Amy. She was certain that the choices she had made in her life had destined her for a happily ever after with the man she had chosen. Amy had always loved Christmas, not just because of the gifts and music, but also because of the warmth and the way that everyone always treated each other with so much love. Christmas was a time of togetherness, a time to celebrate the love of family and friends. So what better time could there be to have a wedding? Amy has planned every minute of her ceremony to perfection. She is certain that all it takes to be happy and have a successful life is careful planning and logical expectations. True love, as she had once believed in, now seemed like a romantic dream of a giddy teenager. What she had with her future husband she felt was much more important than a pounding heart; it was real, rational, and made perfect sense. They were good together. Their lives would be good together. At least that was what Amy continued to tell herself whenever an ounce of doubt approached her. Because of this she was not worried in the least, as most brides might be. Amy was eager to begin her new journey, she was certain she has chosen her groom wisely. He is a kind, successful, and reliable man. At least, she thought he was. Just as the ceremony is about to begin Amy’s beloved sister delivers some shocking news. There would be no wedding. There would be no perfectly planned life unfolding before Amy. Her carefully selected groom had eyes for one of Amy’s bridesmaids, and the two had run off together, leaving Amy with a wedding full of guests to face. She is painfully embarrassed to have to call off the wedding, but what is even worse is that she is not really heartbroken. She had only ever been head over heels with one man, and when that relationship did not work out she had made what she thought was a mature choice by setting aside her childish beliefs in romance and accepting the affection that sh.

John Oliver Says It’s Time To End Discrimination Against Gays

John Oliver says it’s time for the federal government to finish the job when it comes to gay rights

Speaking on HBO’s “Last Week Tonight” on Sunday, Oliver pointed out that while gay couples now have the right to get married, they don’t have many other rights in much of the nation.

In some cases, they have no rights at all.

Now Oliver is calling on the feds to extend basic civil rights protections to the gay community.

“States have a checkered history when it comes to civil rights,” Oliver said. “Just look at Arkansas right now. Not only do they not have any anti-discrimination ordinances, earlier this year they actually passed an anti-anti-discrimination ordinance that prevents any city or county from extending civil rights protections to gay people.”

As Oliver pointed out, that’s the opposite of progress.

“It would be like if Apple suddenly introduced the iPhone 7 and it was a flip phone,” he said. “That’s still not as dumb as the Apple Watch… but it’s dumb.”

End Your Battle With Time

2015-08-21-1440179336-2800785-3B930640FA.jpg

photo by Jan Vašek at stocksnap.io

We stopped by my mom’s house after school. The sky was cloudy and the air crisp. I crossed my arms against my chest while my son rang the doorbell. “Chilly in August?” I thought to myself, “It’s too early.”

Mom came to the door looking beautiful, as she always does. Her sky blue eyes lit up at the sight of her grandson. I could tell she had missed him. We were squatters at her house during the summer, when the days were hot and the pool was cool. But the last two weeks had been different.

He walked inside and flopped onto the rug in the foyer. We both joined him and Mom asked him questions about the new school year. He answered them — short and (not all that) sweet. He wasn’t over the moon about school and working his way through transition.

I thought of my niece as well, she had started school the day before. “The kids are in 5th and 6th grade now,” I thought to myself as Mom and Sam chatted. I realized how quickly the years are passing. I suddenly felt hollow in my chest, like Time had carved a crevasse with a spoon. I was lost in my thoughts when Mom said, “I guess it’s time to close the pool since everyone is back in school. Swimming seems to stop when school starts up — it’s the signal that summer is over.”

Her statement shocked me and something in me wailed, “Summer is over?”

Sure, Sam had been back in school for over a week. Yes, my niece had started too. Of course I’d noticed the crazy morning traffic. Yes, I’d been back at work full time. My brain held the facts, but somehow my spirit had denied them until now.

As the truth sunk in, my body caved under the weight of realization. Spent were the Sundays that didn’t turn into busy Mondays. Expired were the evenings when we’d sit on the tailgate and watch the sun to go down. Over were the impromptu trips with a free flowing ending. Finished was the freedom of summer.

“How can this be?” I asked myself. Without saying anything, I got up and walked out back. I flung off my flip flop and stuck my foot in the pool. It was cold to the touch — not May cold and warming up with longer days ahead, but Fall cold and getting colder as the nights grew longer instead. Reality set in as I said to myself, “Summer. Is. Over.”

Mom had followed me outside. My gaze met hers and we both knew more than summer was gone. Gone was the only season the kids were 10 and 11 and adored hanging out with each other. Gone was the hope of finally getting the whole family to the ocean. Gone was the time we’d gather by her pool and order pizza and listen to the kids beg to spend the night. Gone were the days of kayaking the river just because the water was right. Gone was our grip on yet another season, another year. It was a stabbing reminder that we cannot stop time.

My son and I headed home to take care of our afternoon duties. Though the sun had come out, darkness held me. I took a walk. The strands of golden sunlight passing through the trees brightened my mind a bit.

I moved gingerly through the evening. Aware of how fragile my feelings were, I stayed present and gave thanks for the little things.

I set my phone alarm for an early school morning and crawled into bed. I thought more about summer passing too quickly but this time honesty trumped nostalgia. I realized in the summer months, I had complained about time too. I worried about not having enough time to get my work done while we played. Then I fretted over the time I worked and put my son in front of the TV and his tablet. It seemed I was perpetually battling time.

I turned onto my right side, pulled the covers up over my face and tucked my head in shame. My sleep was restless and torn, but a rich smell wafted in as my coffee maker began its brewing at 5 a.m. It was enough to get my feet to the floor and shuffling to the kitchen.

I pulled a mug from the cabinet, placed a bit of sweet in the bottom and splashed cream over it. I poured from the pot slowly until the color in my cup got just right. The first sip is Sabbath so I sat down and took my time with it.

I noticed in my “trying ever so hard to get quiet” mind, that I was already fighting about time again. I considered all I had to think about and pray for prior to the house waking up. Before that could happen with clarity, I’d have to wait for my thoughts to stop jumping around like corn in a hot skillet. “I’m already behind, and I’ve barely gotten started.” I whimpered.

And somewhere in the midst of it all, truth broke through.

“Why can’t I just make peace with time?” The words were foreign. Everything in me paused and stood like a solider at full attention waiting for what followed:

I say, ‘Time passes too quickly.’ But I am the one who passes too quickly. Time moves along at a perfectly predictable pace.

I say, ‘There is not enough time.’ But that is like saying there is not enough sun or sky. Time is eternal.

I say, ‘I need to manage my time better.’ But that is like saying I need to manage the ocean’s tide. Time lies in God’s hands, not mine.

I say, ‘I’ve run out of time.’ But that is like saying the Mississippi River has run out of water. Time flows perpetually.

I say, ‘She has more time than I do.’ But that is like saying time doesn’t treat everyone the same or share itself equally. Time does not discriminate.

I say, ‘Time is not on my side.’ But I am the one who is adversarial with Time- blaming, criticizing, controlling, kicking and screaming at its stride. And Time takes my tantrums, humbly and dutifully marching on.

This is Time’s job to march on. If Time didn’t do its job, there would be nothing advancing me. Time propels me into decisions… awareness… action… forgiveness… growth. Time underpins the urgency I feel to live and love and serve and savor the moments.

The real story is, Time is my ally. Time lets me participate. Time includes me out of the goodness in its heart.

Today, I am making a peace treaty with the clock, the seasons and the mirror — the places where Time most shows itself marching on. I will recognize and respect Time’s loyal nature and stop blaming it for my problems and pain. In return, Time will give me today… and hopefully tomorrow and next week and years to come — but that is up to Time.

I wrote these things down and closed the journal in my lap. Sam’s alarm clock sounded off in his room. It was time for the day to begin. But before I stood up, I dropped my head to pray, “Thank you, Father Time, for letting me participate. May I make a peace with you that passes all understanding.”

Yes, summer is gone where I live, but the opportunity to change the way I partner with Time has just arrived.

Do you battle time, too? What would it be like to make peace with it? Leave a comment on Facebook or the blog. I’d love to hear from you.

I have Free Gifts for you here. An e-book about your path to purpose, a guided meditation to let go of worry, and a eulogy template. Yep, a place where you can write your own Eulogy now to get clear about the life you want to be living. I hope you’ll use it. It’s life changing.

Bill Maher Rips Today’s ‘Sharing Economy’ On ‘Real Time’

It’s probably safe to say you won’t see Bill Maher ride around in an Uber anytime soon. The comedian put the ride-finding app as well as others on blast on Friday, calling out America’s “sharing economy” on “Real Time.”

“Airbnb? You really think anybody really wants to have total strangers living in their apartment for a week? ‘Oh look, someone else’s pubes on my soap. I’m living the dream,'” Maher said.

One major problem with sharing apps is that some of them can put your personal information at risk, though Maher seemed more focused on the financial aspect. The comedian blames outrageous income inequality and greed for the rise in services he says are now replacing people with robots.

“The one thing we’re not sharing are the profits. Somehow they forgot to create an app for that,” he quipped.

Passing the Time

Passing the Time

With a six-day workweek, long hours on the job, and the hard labor required to keep house, leisure time was precious in the 1800s. Without recorded music, radio, movies, TV, video games, or the Internet, Americans had to make their own fun, and most of it was simple and very low tech-singing around the family piano, visiting with neighbors, or picnicking in the woods. In the bigger towns and cities, theaters offered live, professional entertainment ranging from classic plays to raucous minstrel shows. In the smaller towns and rural areas, people waited anxiously for those few times a year when a traveling show or circus might come through the area. As the 1800s progressed, leisure time and economic resources increased for many Americans and a more sophisticated public demanded new and more exciting amusements. Read all about America at play in the 1800s!

That Time ‘Gilmore Girls’ Predicted The Future Of Online News

“Gilmore Girls” was a groundbreaking show. It was celebrated for its portrayal of a nuanced relationship between a single mother and daughter, was written in a trademark style and has experienced a major resurgence in popularity in the past year, since coming to Netflix.

We always knew the show was special, but we didn’t realize how extraordinarily prescient it could be at times. In fact, one of its main characters predicted the future of feel-good news (the kind of thing you’d see on Upworthy today) all the way back in 2005.

In the show’s sixth season, Lorelai Gilmore expresses her frustration with all of the bad news being reported in the newspaper, then says she plans to start her own publication that’s only for “good” news.

Sound familiar? It should. Positive-leaning sites like Upworthy, ViralNova and even The Huffington Post’s own Good News page have attracted huge followings in the past few years.

Research shows that exposure to inspirational news can significantly improve your mood – which might explain why these sites have become so popular.

Lorelai’s idea was a good one, and it was years ahead of its time. (Upworthy launched in 2012.) And to think we always considered Rory the smart one!

Bob Costas Doesn’t Have Time For Your Bulls–t Pitching Performance

Bob Costas has called some games, you know? You could even say he’s called some of the great games in the history of U.S. sports. So when you step up to the mound and you know Bob Costas is on the mic, you better bring it. You better bring it every goddamned time. And if you don’t, well, he sure as hell will bring it for you.

Such was life for Chicago Cubs pitcher Pedro Strop on Friday after he gave up a home run, hit a batter, walked a batter and then got pulled out of the game only to point to the sky, much to Costas’ apparent disapproval.

Chicago Cubs pitcher Pedro Strop apparently did not not play to Bob Costas’ liking.

Bob Costas doesn’t have time for this bullshit. Seriously, does this look like the face of a man who messes around? No, it does not.

James Cameron Cried The First Time He Heard James Horner’s ‘Titanic’ Theme

Legendary film composer James Horner died in a plane crash on Monday, but he will always be remembered for his music.

Horner was best known for his two-time Oscar-winning score to James Cameron’s “Titanic,” as well as his scores to “Braveheart,” “Apollo 13,” “Avatar,” “Field of Dreams” and “A Beautiful Mind.” The 61-year-old, who has composed music for over 100 films, was also an avid pilot. The two-seater single-engine S312 Tucano he was flying on Monday crashed in Santa Barbara, California.

While many celebrities, collaborators and fellow musicians have remembered Horner on Twitter, Cameron paid tribute to the composer on The Hollywood Reporter’s site on Tuesday. The “Titanic” director looked back on working with Horner on everything from the first project they both worked on, “Battle Beyond the Stars,” up to “Avatar.” Although the two got off to a rough start while working on “Aliens” together because of timing issues, the filmmaker said that he knew he had to work with Horner again on “Titanic,” telling THR, “I thought, ‘I don’t care what happened, I want to work with James.'”

Cameron remembered the first time he heard Horner’s concept for the “Titanic” theme. “I drove over to his house,” Cameron said of Horner, “and he sat at the piano and said, ‘I see this as the main theme for the ship.’ He played it once through and I was crying.” When the director heard Horner play his idea for “Rose’s Theme,” he said he knew the musician had “cracked the heart and soul” of the movie.

The filmmaker told Entertainment Weekly that he cried during every song Horner played that day in his studio. “I said to him, ‘You’ve done it,'” Cameron told EW. “He said, ‘I haven’t done anything yet.’ And I said, ‘James, you’ve done it.'”

For the full tribute, head to The Hollywood Reporter.

7 Ways to Carve Out Time to Meditate

2015-06-09-1433869826-1319282-HowtoMeditate_Huff.jpg

By Alex Orlov for Life by DailyBurn

Establishing a meditation routine can be difficult. You’re busy! Who has time to breathe, let alone sit and breathe? But if you think the only way you’ll learn how to meditate is with a 25-hour day, think again.

Plenty of busy people are making time for meditation. Media guru Arianna Huffington makes it a part of her morning routine. Rapper 50 Cent uses meditation to help him remain positive when faced with negative personalities. And Jerry Seinfeld won’t let anything get between him and his meditation time — he allegedly takes time between TV shoots to get zen.

Cultivating Calm, On Your Time

“I have a really chaotic schedule so I do it whenever I can,” says Dan Harris, a correspondent for ABC News and the author of the New York Times bestseller 10% Happier. “I don’t freak out if I can’t fit it in but I do think it’s important to do something every day.” Harris has been meditating ever since he experienced a panic attack on air nearly a decade ago.

He credits meditation with helping him control knee-jerk reactions to frustrating situations. Thanks to improved patience, Harris says he’s a better listener and is able to hold shorter, more fruitful meetings. Meditation, he says, is “fighting a lifetime pattern of letting your thoughts lead you by the nose.”

Dina Kaplan, founder of The Path, a weekly meditation seminar in New York City, says meditation allows her to have more “mental agility” during her day. She’s much more calm when faced with stress, and feels as though she makes better decisions. And science confirms these benefits: Your brain will actually change if you stick with meditation, just as your body changes when you exercise regularly. You’ll be rewarded with improved memory and other cognitive benefits.

“Don’t put the pressure on yourself that you have to do it forever,” Harris says. It’s okay if you fall off the wagon for a few weeks, so long as you muster the grit to return to your practice. The power of meditation, he says, is derived from practicing daily. Watch the video below for a short meditation exercise from Happify, featuring Harris and Sharon Salzberg, a meditation teacher and author.

So what’s the secret to actually making time for meditation? We asked Harris, Kaplan and David Ngo, a behavioral designer at Stanford University and behavior consultant for The Path, for their best tips on how to actually create a meditation habit.

7 Ways to Start Meditating Today

1. Type it into your phone cal.
Instead of simply hoping you’ll be able to squeeze in meditation on the fly, try setting aside a specific time for it. “If I carve out time to [meditate], that’s the space for my practice to go,” says Ngo. When you create that space, the habit can grow. But rather than thinking of meditation as another item on your to-do list, think of it as a gift to yourself, says Kaplan.

2. Do it in the morning.
“If you’re starting out and you’re struggling with developing the habit, I do think you should do it first thing [in the morning]” says Kaplan. She meditates right after she brushes her teeth. By doing it right away, she has no excuse. Especially for parents with young kids, doing it before the day gets underway is your best bet for fitting in some “me time,” she says. Kaplan recommends not setting your goals too high in the beginning. “If you can do five minutes, that’s better than nothing.”

3. Start with one breath.
Don’t underestimate the power of small behaviors. By focusing on taking one conscious breath when you have a spare moment, you can pave the way for creating a meditation habit. Ngo says this philosophy comes from BJ Fogg, Ph.D., behavioral scientist and founder of Stanford’s Persuasive Technology Lab, who pioneered the idea of creating tiny habits. For example, to create a habit of tidying up at home, you might start by making your bed each morning. A tiny habit should be a behavior that requires little effort and can be performed in less than 30 seconds. “That seed of the habit can then grow into a full-blow tree,” says Ngo.

4. Perform meditation after an existing habit.
After you get into your car for your daily commute, try meditating for a few breaths instead of racing to turn on the ignition. Or quiet your mind after you go to the bathroom at work. “The pattern is always after,” says Ngo. “This is called anchoring.” Ngo recommends choosing a daily occurrence or existing activity to remind yourself to meditate.

5. Use headphones.
As a TV correspondent, Harris has a packed schedule that involves a fair amount of travel. “People think you have to sit in some position, but that isn’t true,” he says. “There are four ways to do it: walking, standing, sitting or lying down.” No matter how busy life gets, Harris tries to fit in 30 minutes of meditation each day. His secret weapon? Headphones. He puts on a pair to cancel noise when he meditates in airports and on planes. “As long as you’re somewhere that’s reasonably quiet, you’re good,” says Harris. (And if you’re lying down and you fall asleep, that’s okay, he says.)

6. Siphon time from superfluous activities.
Think about it: Do you really need to hit “reply all” to every email that hits your inbox? “I would have considered myself busy at my last job, but it was just an excuse to procrastinate from what was really important,” says Kaplan. As a successful start-up founder and Emmy award-winning producer, Kaplan says she was writing redundant emails and taking meetings that were unnecessary. “If you’re answering emails you don’t really need to respond to, that would give you 15 minutes,” she says. With that extra time, she suggests finding a quiet park bench to relax, or even sneaking into a hotel lobby for a few minutes.

7. Practice mindfulness when you’ve got time to kill.
Resist the urge to scroll through Instagram the moment your friend or dinner date heads to the bathroom. “I think it’s very healthy to have all sorts of moments in the day where you’re just being,” says Kaplan. It’s tempting to use our phones as entertainment during those “black spaces” during the day, but Kaplan recommends pausing and just letting the moment happen instead of gluing yourself to your Facebook feed. Look around, smile at other people and enjoy some momentary calm. While it’s not the same as doing a seated meditation, being fully present during these small moments can help you feel more comfortable confronting the thoughts rattling around in your mind.

Time to Call a Truce on the War on Women

We talk a lot about the war on women. At work (wage inequality). On the playing field (domestic violence). On campus (date rape). In the legislature and judiciary (restricted reproductive choice). It’s become a meme, a memorable turn of phrase that both highlights and diminishes the importance of the issue at hand.

But what about the personal war we women wage on ourselves every day? When we stand before the mirror or wake up at three in the morning. The self-defeating and marginalizing comments that become second nature after the age of eight (not good enough, smart enough, pretty enough, thin enough). They’re as devastating as bullets and just as deadly.

The good news is that you can silence that internal critic who brings you down. Here’s how:

1. Ask yourself: is this story true? Have I really gained weight or is this style simply unflattering to my shape? Am I really unqualified for this job/promotion/raise or am I simply insecure because I don’t think I meet/exceed every single qualification? Take a good, realistic look at yourself (or talk with an objective friend or colleague) and separate fact from fiction so you can act with your best intentions at heart.

2. Develop greater self-awareness. Make a chart of your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and things that get in the way. Getting things down on paper will help you see yourself more clearly so you can focus on what’s worth working on or pursuing and what’s worth letting go.

3. Cultivate shades of grey. (No, not that!) Are you prone to an all-or-nothing-at-all approach to life? Extreme thinking can really color your perceptions of what’s real and true. Tone down the black and white so you can see things as they really are and not as you may fear.

4. Choose empathy over judgment. As hard as we are on ourselves, we can be even harder on other women. You never know what’s going on in someone else’s life, so take a step back before you judge another’s life choices. That compassion will come back to you.

If we want to end the war on women, let’s start by first making peace with ourselves.

Bob Newhart on that “Seventies” Show — “What a Wonderful Time It Was”

2015-06-10-1433896867-5324260-Unknown11.jpeg

In the 1970s, Bob Newhart found himself literally in the middle of a revolution. He did not look the type. In his “button-down” appearance and deadpan delivery and demeanor, he resembled what he was before he embarked on his standup comedy career; an accountant. But “The Bob Newhart Show,” which debuted in 1972 and would run for six seasons, was in the vanguard of a new era in which television got real.

That’s the title of the first episode in CNN’s new eight-part-documentary series, “The Seventies,” which premieres Thur. June 11 at 9 p.m. ET. “Television Gets Real” is a clip-rich episode featuring new interviews with Newhart, Tom Hanks (who served as “The Seventies'” co-executive producer with Gary Goetzman and Mark Herzog), Valerie Harper, John Amos, Norman Lear, Robert Klein and critics Tom Shales and David Bianculli.

In its second year on the air, “The Bob Newhart Show” was an integral part of arguably television’s Best. Programming. Block. Ever; CBS’ Saturday night lineup of “All in the Family,” “M*A*S*H,” “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” “The Bob Newhart Show,” and “The Carol Burnett Show.”

“The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and “The Bob Newhart Show” cleansed the palate from the envelope-pushing “All in the Family” and “M*A*S*H.” Neither show pointedly delved into the social and political issues of the day, which is one of the reasons both seem to have aged better than other more topical counterparts.

“We were different,” Newhart said in a phone interview. “We certainly weren’t ‘All in the Family.’ Mary and I and Carol Burnett were more traditionally funny. If the whole night had been shows taking on issues, I don’t think it would have worked. Our shows were a necessary balance.”

Newhart was no stranger to television. He was a mainstay of variety and talk shows such as “The Ed Sullivan Show” and “The Tonight Show” (he guest-hosted almost 90 times). Following the breakout success of his first comedy album, “The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart” in 1960, he was tapped to host an eponymous variety show that lasted one season, but did win an Emmy Award and the Peabody.

One and done suited Newhart fine. “I probably never should have done it,” he laughed. “I wasn’t seasoned enough. I did a monologue every week, but at the time we did about 39 shows and I felt I couldn’t maintain the quality I had achieved on the record album. That had been like a dam that suddenly burst and all this material came out. And they put me in sketches, which I wasn’t very good it. So I made a point of watching good people work to see what you had to do to be good. Plus, I wanted to get back to the standup world. I felt much safer there.”

He did some series work, an “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” episode; an episode of the Buck Henry series “Captain Nice.” And then MTM Enterprises, the producers of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” came calling.

By this point, the times may have been a’changin’, but prime time television was still most associated with escapism and rural-based comedies such as “The Beverly Hillbillies,” “Green Acres,” and “Petticoat Junction,” all on CBS. Executive Robert Wood executed a so-called “Rural Purge” that opened the door for Bob, Mary, Archie Bunker and Hawkeye.

Newhart was all in. “The fact that it was MTM suggested it would be different,” Newhart said. “Also, I had been on the road for 12 years and the road is not that romantic. It’s a lot of hotel rooms and travel and missing luggage. As far as a home life is concerned, you’re gone. When I was offered a sitcom, it was like, ‘You mean I can have a normal life?’

“The Bob Newhart Show” was set in Chicago, Newhart’s hometown. “Mary had taken Minneapolis and Andy Griffith had North Carolina,” he joked. “I know Chicago. I understand Chicago.” Newhart portrayed psychologist Bob Hartley, husband to Emily (Suzanne Pleshette). At Newhart’s insistence, there would be no kids.

“I didn’t want to be that TV dad,” he said. “I didn’t want to be that father who is not very bright, but the family loves him and in the final scene, the family is hugging him but they’re looking at the camera, like, ‘What are we going to do about him?'”

Making his character a psychologist was a masterstroke. It dovetailed with his standup persona as a listener and reactor in his classic phone routines. “(When it was suggested), I said that psychiatrists really deal with more severely-disturbed people. Personally, my own strange comedy preferences would have enjoyed getting humor from that, but I didn’t think it was viable (for television).”

“The Bob Newhart Show” did not want to set the world on fire and it succeeded brilliantly. As with “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” it was a character-based comedy that boasted a peerless ensemble and smart, pitch-perfect writing. “That’s a formula I stumbled on,” he joked. “Get great writing and a great cast and take all the credit yourself.”

And yet, Newhart thought the show, which was getting Emmy nominations and “Super Bowl numbers” in the ratings, thought that it was living in the shadow of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” (“And for good reason,” he laughed). In the show’s fifth season, he approached Robert Wood about moving the show. “I felt we were doing good stuff that wasn’t getting as recognized,” he said. “Bob Wood said to leave it alone; that it worked where it was. It wasn’t until syndication and we didn’t follow Mary that the show was really recognized as being good on its own.”

It was Newhart’s decision to end the show after six seasons. “We might have had another year left in it,” he said, “but I had seen shows that had stayed on too long and it damaged the brand.”

Today, at 85, the brand is still in demand. He won his first acting Emmy in 2013 for his role as Professor Proton on “The Big Bang Theory,” While his character was killed off, he said, there has been talk he could appear as a Yoda-like figment of Sheldon’s imagination to help him in times of trouble.

He plays about 20 dates a year at which fans of a certain age are compelled to tell him what “The Bob Newhart Show” means to them. “That’s one of the great things about being on television, and I run into it more and more,” he reflected. “You’re part of people’s lives. A man will come up and say that he and his dad watched the show together on Saturday night and they have this look in their eye, like, ‘What a wonderful time it was.'”

Which makes the notion of retiring seem ludicrous. “As long as I am able to,” he said of performing. “It’s a new experience every time. And why stop making people laugh? I can’t understand that–‘I’m tired of making people laugh; I don’t want to hear it anymore.'”

And that made him laugh.

How We’re Reacting To Bath And Body Works Reissuing The Most Nostalgic Scents Of All Time

Body spray enthusiasts, rejoice!

Bath & Body Works, your favorite middle school hangout, announced Friday that it would reintroduce six of its most iconic scents, just in time for summer.

Cucumber Melon, Country Apple, Juniper Breeze, Pearberry, Plumeria and White Tea & Ginger will be available in-stores and online from June 8 – July 5. As Phuong Ireland, Director of Brand Development for Bath & Body Works shared, customers “have amazing memories and stories of” these scents.

While the fancy new packaging is nice, it would be pretty exciting if the old bottles (which you can still purchase online!) came along with the great news.

The brand’s Instagram, which boasts a cool (as a cucumber melon) one million followers, proves that people are just as committed to the brand now as they were in the ’90s and early 2000s.

With the return of these six classic scents, which Ireland calls “iconic to the Bath & Body Works heritage and what we were known for for a long time,” it’s safe to say the delightfully overpowering smell of White Tea & Ginger Body Spray will soon be invading an office building near you.

Which scent are you most excited for? Check out some of our favorite Bath & Body Works memories and reactions below, and share yours in the comments!

“I was obsessed with the Cucumber Melon lotion — I would put it on before every middle school mixer/dance (I went to an all girls’ school, so our monthly mixers were the only time we got to socialize with boys). Cucumber Melon lotion, mascara, pink shiny lip gloss, brightly-colored polo, jean skirt, and flip flops — it was a uniform. There was a sad moment at some point in 8th grade when I realized I had over-exposed myself to the smell and didn’t like it anymore…” Hollis Miller, Associate Social Editor, Voices

“I went through many bottles of Cucumber Melon body splash in middle school (and yes, it was BODY SPLASH, not a normal term like body spray). It’s now indelibly associated with the bathrooms where we’d all change after gym class. Our school did not have showers. Thank God the fruity smell of Cucumber Melon mingled perfectly with our B.O.” Claire Fallon, Books Editor

“Going to the mall with just your friends was the first step towards independence in suburbia, and my earliest mall hangs always included stops at Bath & Body Works. I would consistently try out all the different scents and then inevitably settle on Cucumber Melon. Satisfying every damn time.” Emma Gray, Senior Editor, Women

“Ah, what better place to linger the mall as a teen after I had already stocked up on various pairs of Limited Too sweatpants with “SPOILED” written across the ass. (But that’s another thinkpiece for another day?) I remember feeling compelled to buy the Cucumber Melon hand sanitizer with the blue beads in it because all the cool, pretty teachers compulsively put it on after accidentally making skin to skin contact with any of us.” Lauren Zupkus, Associate Social Editor, Entertainment

“Juniper Breeze was my jam. I thought it spelled so good, but I think the sheer AMOUNT I put on might’ve made it a boy-repellent (or maybe that was just my bangs + braces combo).” Carly Ledbetter, Associate Lifestyle Editor

“Not to be a debbie downer, but I HATE(D) Cucumber Melon. I used to slather my hands with Juniper Breeze hand sanitizer in high school, though. And if you were in my group of friends, you gave each other mini bottles of lotion before Christmas break as gifts. #besties4lyfe” Taylor Trudon, Senior Editor, Young Voices

“There was a theory going around my tiny Catholic middle school that boys liked you better if you smelled like apple pie. (circa 2006-2010) To this day I believe that my Country Apple body lotion secured me my first boyfriend.” Mia Fermindoza, Photo Operations Assistant

“I was driving to the mall when I was 16. My guy friend found my car stash of Plumeria and started spraying it all over the car. I turned my head to yell at him, rolled into the car in front of me at the stoplight, then paid off the man for hitting his car with a check for $ 75 (all but a penny of all my babysitting money,) so my parents didn’t find out I’d crashed into someone.” Janie Campbell, Senior Editor, Miami

Daniel Radcliffe Has Probably Traveled Through Time Just To Mess With Us All

Are we sure time-turners don’t exist? Because Daniel Radcliffe looks an awful lot like the men and women in these old-timey photos unearthed by people on Reddit.

For a man who once wore the same outfit for months just to mess with the paparazzi, we wouldn’t put it past him to pull a prank of this scale — if, you know, magic were real. Which it’s not. Probably.

We’ll have to wait for October to roll around for his next onscreen performance, but maybe there’s a yellowing snapshot in an old shoebox tucked away in someone’s attic waiting to be discovered before then.

“Not-Daniel Radcliffe” was really living it up in the past …

Listening to some jams in the 1940s.

Reddit user gaztruman posted this supposedly 70-year-old photo of a crowd at Band on the Wall Manchester, a music venue.

Kidding around with some pals.

Reddit user microwavetea posted this photo, captioned “My grandma is a time-traveling Daniel Radcliffe.” That guy in the middle did not get the joke.

Making the most of those golden high-school days.

Pictured above with a wee Andy Samberg, Reddit user tackytick says they found this photo in an old yearbook from 1978.

Looking prim and proper with a string of pearls — and some very familiar glasses.

Reddit user gurbla posted this photo of a time-traveling wizard!!! respectable gentlewoman.

Posing prettily for the camera.

According to Reddit user Waldenponds16, this is lady is a prostitute in the 1800s. All we see is Harry having some fun.

Gustavo Will Conduct All 9 Beethoven Symphonies for First Time Ever

For the first time ever in his career, Gustavo Dudamel will conduct all nine Beethoven symphonies on successive nights, in numerical order. From July 12-16, Gustavo, his Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar from Caracas, and the lucky audiences at the Teatro Mayor Julio Mario Santo Domingo in Bogotá, will be tracing the steps of genius.

2015-05-31-1433089980-9524887-dudamel_dsc_9365_vevans.jpg

Gustavo Dudamel. Photograph by Vern Evans

When Gustavo Dudamel raises his baton at the Teatro Mayor Julio Mario Santo Domingo on the evening of July 12, he, the Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar, the audience and Bogotá will begin to retrace the steps Beethoven took when he created the modern symphony. On each of five successive nights, Gustavo and his Venezuelan orchestra will perform two symphonies in chronological order, concluding on July 16 with the mighty Ninth. It will be the first time Gustavo has ever played the complete cycle on five successive nights there, and it will probably be the first time any of the audience has heard it that way either.

With Gustavo at the helm, in all the full glory of his youth, and considering the joyful power and brilliance of his Deutsche Grammophon recordings of the Third, Fifth and Seventh Symphonies with the Simón Bolívar orchestra, the progression of the nine symphonies will seem like the advance of nine mighty, classical music super-heroes.

There are lots of back stories about why each symphony was written, what was going on the world and what each means.

For this once-in-a-lifetime Beethoven experience like this, however, it may be best to just let the symphonies rock and roll as if you were hearing them for the first time.

Doing Beethoven’s nine symphonies on successive nights

I couldn’t find anyone who had played all nine symphonies on successive nights, but I did find the next best thing, someone who had done all 16 string quartets on successive nights. It was Guillaume Sutre, first violinist of the Ysaye Quartet which played at the Bogotá es Beethoven festival in 2013. Asked what it was like, Sutre replied,

“It was a week of six concerts at the Besançon Festival that became the most challenging concerts I ever performed. The difficulty of playing all the quartets was much more than I could have imagined; my body was tense and tired from the sheer physical and mental stress of the relentless intensity of Beethoven’s musical, intellectual, emotional and technical demands.

“It took me some years before I could enjoy performing the cycle again; and then we did it close to 20 times, each time being a richer experience, especially when we played them in chronological order, as Gustavo is going to do in Bogotá.

“Sometimes, when we were playing these quartets one after another, the four of us, and I think the audience as well, fully understood and enjoyed the revolutionary quartet-by-quartet evolution of Beethoven’s writing tpo such an extent at, at times, I had the distinct sensation that Beethoven was there, sitting next to me!

“I can’t imagine,” Sutre added, “how incredibly powerful hearing the symphonies one after another will be.”

Beethoven and Bogotá

The Teatro Mayor is a perfect place acoustically for Beethoven, the instrumental sections in the orchestra joining up in their endless different pairings, cellos with woodwinds, strings with percussion, violas and piano, harp and celeste, horns with strings, all heard so clearly.

Music, however, is more than acoustics. And for musicians, Bogotá is one of the best places to make it. Especially Beethoven.

Saul Bitran, the first violinist of the Cuarteto Latinoamericano, which played Beethoven’s iconic Quartet in C sharp minor, Op. 131, at Beethoven es Bogotá, spoke very eloquently:

“I had the distinct feeling that Beethoven’s music was coming alive and speaking directly to Bogotá’s audiences, many of which had never heard it before.  It proved to me, once again, the universality of great works of art.  I have nothing but the highest possible respect and admiration for the people who made Bogotá es Beethoven possible, especially the staff at the Teatro Mayor, and its visionary leader, Ramiro Osorio.   The affordability of the tickets turned the festival into a veritable Beethoven town fair, where the whole city – families, students, children, senior citizens – flocked to hear this extraordinary music.  I have no doubt that this festival  changed many bogotanos’  lives forever.

“Because Beethoven’s music is able, like perhaps no other, to delve into the deepest regions of the human experience, the emotional journey through which I lived during the year in which the Cuarteto learned his Quartet Op. 131 was life-transforming to me.  In this piece, Beethoven is unconcerned with form, duration or technical considerations. Instead, he writes music which grabs and shakes your soul, putting you face to face with regions of yourself which are not accesible otherwise.   After the concert at the Teatro Mayor, I felt exhausted, drained, but alive in a way I had seldom experienced before.”

Guillaume Sutre told me that playing Beethoven in Bogotá was,

“a very special experience. We often hear that classical music is reserved for an older and more expert audience, that Beethoven quartets can be unfriendly to a novice listener, etc. This was not the case in Bogota and it was very moving to be sharing these masterworks in superb halls with a very large audience, young and enthusiastic.

“Bogotá was also a very strong experience for a musician, spending a week with other musicians coming from everywhere with this common agenda of rehearsing, performing, listening, discussing, all and only about this musical giant and great humanist.”

Gustavo himself told me last year when asked about the affection between he and Bogotá, and why he chose Bogotá to perform his first ever, live Beethoven cycle,

“Both my orchestra and I have a long history with Bogotá and with Colombia. Firstly, we are neighbors and brothers, sharing a common, extraordinary history and culture. We feel like we are in our home-away-from-home when we are performing in Bogotá which is why we probably give more concerts there than anywhere else on tour in South America!”

Booting People Out of Your Life? Some Must Go — Some Have Time Limits

You’re thinking about that person right now aren’t you? You know, the one who makes you want to poke ink pens into your own eye sockets?

Some people in our lives drive us absolutely nuts. We want to shake them while saying, “What in the hell is wrong with you?” Family members, friends, co-workers and life partners can all drift into the category of toxicity. Sometimes we work on projects which are the highlights of our lives and we find ourselves trapped by a nut case. You desperately wish to move on, but you feel guilty about booting them out of your life.

I am in week four of the six-week OCourse, “Thrive” with Arianna Huffington on Oprah Winfrey’s website. Last week, we worked on identifying the most important priorities in our personal lives and dropping the priorities which just take up space. People who are considered to be fundamentally different from my personal core values were on the table. Not an easy process at first glance and it disturbed me for a time.

The course is interactive. I was asked by a Productions Assistant from OWN if I had a question for Arianna which could be shared with everyone in the course. In week three, Arianna speaks about “letting people off of your train.” Your train is a metaphor for your life and the people who are riding with you as time moves forward.

My question was…
“When focusing on the priorities and projects [of my own], I have found some of the ones I want to keep, have people within them that I want to let off my train. What is a good way to deal with them?”

Arianna’s answer to my question was a deep probe into my core values and how to evaluate whether or not people in my life are truly toxic. Her answer was brilliant. The fundamental difference I have with relating to my core values becomes a key indicator of toxic people in life who need to be escorted off of my train. Some folks may have difficult personalities which oppose mine, yet at the same time they maintain similar core values. Those are the ones who are not toxic and are the ones who I can simply set time limits upon.

I reflected upon how I have let people off of my train in the past with relation to my most passionate personal project. As I think about it now, I realize the notion of cleansing the toxicity from life is one of the core messages within Path of Three Hundred.

Let’s say for a moment that you are in a relationship with someone you believe to be the love of your life. “Oh yeah, that one…I can’t live without him or her even though he or she cheats, lies, talks crap behind my back and walks all over me as if I was a doormat.” Well, there is the very clear clue of a toxic person who must be booted off of your train. Yes, forgive them and yourself, but get them the hell off now. This is the one on your train who is easy to boot off once you find the courage within yourself to be alone for a while. The bonus with this one is you may find yourself on a very cool, yet scary, adventure where you learn epic lessons of life. I did and was transformed.

Or…

You are in the midst of creating something which you feel passionate about. Your life’s work which you feel could bring about massive positive change in the lives of millions, both alive and yet to be born. OK, that may be a bit extreme, but you get my drift. You are working on your passion and fulfilling a dream. Whatever it is, it’s big to you.

Along the path of your project, you invite others (or they invite themselves) to join you in the creation of your masterpiece. As time goes by, you begin to realize a few of them are not really on board with how you think. Yet, they contribute in such a way that their efforts make your project even better. They may even help create a better you.

Thus, a dilemma and this is where Arianna’s answer to my question becomes a key point. There will always be people in our lives we can only take for brief amounts of time. They exist in a gray area. We really do not have to do anything except establish some boundaries. Perhaps difficult at first, but once they are set, life will flow nicely.

Arianna said, “Make sure people are truly toxic.”

I had to let her statement gel for a while…days actually. I meditated while at the beach with my dog and took several long walks in silence. Upon the reflection with her statement diving deep into my core, I realized something about myself. I was doing something which I cannot stand being done to me. I was judging people I loved when I simply needed to establish some space. It’s part of the awakening process.

The cool thing about this process is now you have a way to recognize the ones who truly are toxic and the ones who we just need to put a little distance between us and them. You can boot someone off forever. Some need to be escorted off your train if they are “draining energy instead of being part of the joy of our lives,” as Arianna stated in the answer to my question. You can keep most of your people around with respectful and loving distance.
