Swatch Opens New Times Square Flagship

NEW YORK — The Swatch Group marked the opening of its new Times Square flagship for the Americas on Tuesday night.
The unit, measuring 4,300 square feet, is intended to provide shoppers with an interactive experience.
Located at 1535 Broadway, the multilevel store is in the former breezeway of the Marriott Marquee hotel. It is markedly larger than the Swiss firm’s former Times Square flagship at 1528 Broadway, which measured 3,125 square feet.
Creative director Carlo Giordanetti told WWD of Swatch’s New York upgrade: “Certainly one of our major objectives is to make the space much lighter, brighter, more open and transparent — for Swatch the notion of transparency is a very important part of our DNA.
“We love interaction — especially a location like Times Square — you need to engage people much more than just with product,” he added of the store’s entertainment factor.
The store is retrofitted with an interactive color wall that morphs when shoppers spin a “watch gear” fixture. Interactive digitalized viewfinders provide a virtual sightseeing tour of the city. Many of the watch display cases were built to mimic New York iconography, including hot dog stands. The company’s interchangeable “Pop” collection will be a focal point of merchandise stocked.

5 Times Kendall Jenner’s Clothes Cost More Than Your Rent

For all the times Kendall Jenner steps out in something affordable, there are dozens of times when she wears $ 2,550 T-shirts. Whether or not she paid for these things (and we have a feeling she did not), the fact that $ 995 sweatpants exist is a bit of a mystery to us.

We know that the reality star has made a very successful career for herself as a model, but it still pains us when we see her in a garment that cost more than our rent. We officially give up — we can’t keep up with the Kardashians.

Desperate Times Called for Tapping Measures on 42nd St.

The Depression was, well, depressing. That’s why so much entertainment of the time, especially the full-blown productions of Busby Berkeley, were over-blown homages to wealth, prosperity, to hope and happiness and all things opposite the depressing times.

Bradford Ropes wrote a novel about a young girl from Allentown, PA that heads for the New York and Broadway right smack in the middle of the last ditch effort of the domineering director Julian Marsh’s attempt to launch a hit at the height of the Great Depression.

The novel, “42nd Street,” was made in to a movie in 1933 and was a far cry from the original which was filled with sex, drugs and all sorts of debauchery. Yet, the movie got to be far more risqué than others soon to follow because of the PCA code passed in 1930 but wasn’t enforced vigorously until 1934. The code saw the end of strong women, overt sexuality, even open homosexuality and illegal drug use in films. The code was a Roman Catholic creation but both “42nd St.” the novel, movie and the play managed to escape it.

2015-11-16-1447632706-4953568-SegerstromCenter42ndStreetCaitlinEhlingerasPeggySawyercenterandtheCompanyof42ndStreet_2.jpg

The Broadway play came around in 1980 produced by David Merrick, directed by Gower Champion (who was not well at the time) and orchestrated by Philip J. Lang. It won a Tony and would be Champion’s last play and Merrick’s last success. It then had a Tony-winning revival in 2001 under Michael Stewart and Mark Bramble. It is currently touring stopping at the Segerstrom Arts Centerin Costa Mesa, CA until November 22nd and continuing across the country throughout 2016.

The revival’s co-author Mark Bramble has again revised the play and is directing this backstage tale to Randy Skinner’s choreography of a young chorus girl that gets a big break when the star can’t go on. In an odd case of life imitating art, Catherine Zeta Jones went on in the lead role of the play in London and was so good she ended up being cast as the lead way back when. Bramble and Skinner were behind the Tony winning 2001 revival and this production has all the verve and energy of any incarnation.

Boundless energy, in fact, more energy than mortals can possible imagine. I do not know how Caitlin Ehlinger as wide-eyed hopeful Peggy Sawyer or Blake Stadnik’s Billy Lawlor deliver the non-stop no-holds-barred tap number after tap number, but they do and with effortless style and infectious energy that makes the smiles real on both dancers and audience members alike. Matthew J. Taylor’s Julian Marsh is the perfect caricature of a what a desperate but proud Broadway producer would be, and it is he that gets to deliver the iconic plea to Ehilnger to “Come along and listen to the lullaby of Broadway…”

That’s just one of four iconic songs in this production, from the campy “Shuffle Off to Buffalo” to “I Only Have Eyes For You” and of course, the title “42nd Street” the Broadway hits and big production numbers are non stop.

2015-11-16-1447632735-4862046-SegerstromCenter42ndStreetCaitlinEhlingerasPeggySawyerandMatthewJTaylorasJulianMarshPHOTOBYCHRISBENNION.jpg

And while the entire cast, and it’s big, does everything it can to make the audience feel as though they are sitting in the middle of a Busby Berkeley film, some songs like “There’s A Sunny Side to Ev’vry Situation” about the benefits of being poor were ringing very true for the modern day audience in Orange County, CA. As the campy tramps sang “We’re In the Money” (yes, Daniel, the WB frog did sing that in part of his medley….) the spirit of hitting it rich, of rich being a job, a chance, a shot and not just finances did not fall on deaf ears.

The fact is, after seeing “Annie” at the Pantages a few weeks back and now this, both musicals set in or near the Depression, it’s easy to see that The Great Recession of 2008 was actually a Depression for many, and many still are depressed. As politicians fight over $ 10 or $ 15 minimum wage, rents skyrocket and incomes fail to grow with the times, it’s very easy to relate to the sentiments shared in the play; the need for a job, how we all need to pull together to make things work and how we must never lose hope.

So the play fills itself with two hours plus of sheer escapism, no intricate dialogues, no complicated love stories to follow just dreams, jobs, singing and a whole lot of dancing. Huge dance numbers and yes, it did bring me back to the front of our TV that had tubes in it, Black and White even, sitting there watching late night TV with my mom when I was eight or so, in 1970, watching old Busby Berkeley films with hundreds of dancing girls and swimmers and dancing men….”42nd Street” takes the audience on the same escape route so many during the Great Depression used, and it’s a fun one.

The rest of the cast is wonderful, with Britte Steele’s Maggie being the gal everyone loves and Kaitlyn Lawrence just enough diva to pull off Dorothy Brock, the aging star using the play to revive her career who ends up realizing love beats Broadway.

Yes, it’s a time of simple story lines, big dance numbers, lots of feathers, sequins and tap shoes. But it’s “42nd Street,” and that’s exactly what it’s supposed to be. This company delivers all the thrills of the original and provides a night of theatre that is time capsule-esque. For a few hours it’s all about the show, about a hit, about getting the steps right and making sure you and your friends have jobs, it’s about all the dancing feet, yes, on the avenue they’re taking you to, 42nd. Street. It’s about forgetting how bad things can be, or are, and just dancing for the sheer joy of it.

While the musical is dated, it remains timeless and while it’s set in the Depression seems too relevant. But no matter, it’s impossible to leave and not find yourself tapping way in the hall, the car or the sidewalk. And that’s a good thing.

9 Times Celebrities Dropped Some Major Truths About Sleep

Everyone needs to get their rest — between 7 and 9 hours of it, according to the National Sleep Foundation. But it can be hard to get the word out, so it always helps when celebrities rave about how important sleep is in their lives, too.

You need sleep because it’s when your brain and complex nervous systems perform much-needed daily maintenance on themselves. Sleep helps build memories, makes you feel better emotionally and stabilizes your blood sugar. It’s even important for your looks, as people like Lauren Conrad and Gwyneth Paltrow attest. So the next time you find yourself pressing “play” on just one more Netflix episode before bed, ask yourself — What Would Beyonce Do?

To get sleep-inspired, here are some of our favorite celebrity sleep quotes:

TOPLESS WOMEN CONTROVERSY: A Message to Parents visiting Times Square

If you are looking for Disneyland, then you are in the wrong state. This is New York. Times Square is a PUBLIC SPACE. And in New York City (and New York State) being topless in public is LEGAL. If businesses are upset that the law is hurting their bank accounts, then they should get the politicians to make Times Square private (which is what I presume they are trying to do). In the meantime, let’s all stop pretending that the painted women in Times Square is a violation of anything real. It is only an offense to people who come to New York City (many with kids) and want it to be an escape from reality. Well, New York City is reality, and we respect civil liberties here.

Not only is it legal to be topless in New York City, but for the sake of art, full nudity is legal in public for both men and women. I have proven this MANY times including many times in Times Square. I recently returned to New York after producing the first Amsterdam Bodypainting Day. Following a successful NYC Bodypainting Day in July (100 fully nude models in the public streets), I thought it was a good time to take the message of artistic freedom to Europe.

I was only gone for a couple of weeks and look what happened. People started freaking out about topless women! So upon my return to New York, I went back to Times Square and began painting to reaffirm that full nudity is still legal for the sake of art.

    2015-08-28-1440781951-9000341-nudeinTS2fb.JPG

If the city has issue with aggressive pan handling in Times Square, then they should restrict it. But they should but restrict all of it. It’s a shame that it was only when female breasts were involved that it was decided there needed to be a change (this is prime example of gender inequality-the Naked Cowboy has been topless for decades).

Some people say that the art on the “desnudas” is not good art or not art at all or that they’re just trying to make money. Please! How many times have you seen art at a gallery or a museum, and you don’t even know what it is? If it’s a painting, it’s art. And as far as making money, that’s what everyone is trying to do. In fact, it is only because some of the richest people are in danger of making less money that we are discussing this in the first place.

5 Times John Green Offered Advice Everyone Should Follow

John Green has a way with words, even when they’re not on the pages of his best-selling books.

Between building up his Nerdfighter community with his brother, Hank, and racking up more than 4.5 million Twitter followers, Green has found time to offer words of wisdom in interviews and vlogs, through Tumblr posts and Reddit “Ask Me Anything” sessions. In honor of his 38th birthday on August 24 (which the author is celebrating by matching donations to Water.org), we’ve gathered some of his most inspiring messages. From talking about dating to opening up about mental health, here are five times John Green offered some wonderful nuggets of wisdom.

    1. When he had the perfect response to a fan whose boyfriend said she was too smart for him.

In a video from 2010, Green responded to fans after asking them on Twitter if they were dealing with any problems. “My boyfriend says I’m too smart for him, but I really like him. Should I start acting stupid?” a fan asked. After turning into “a giant squid of anger,” he gave the best answer.

“I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. The Venn diagram of boys who don’t like smart girls and boys you don’t want to date is a circle.”

    2. When he offered some kind words to a fan on Tumblr.

A 22-year-old fan with cerebral palsy who identifies as bisexual reached out to Green on Tumblr, asking “How are we to deal with prejudice that comes from within our own families?” Though Green began his humble reply by stating he didn’t know “how to give advice,” he offered an inspiring message.

I don’t know how to give advice but I just want to say that you are a human being, and you are important and cared for. Neither your disabilities nor your sexual orientation make you less human than any other person–you are complex and important and worthy of love. There are people–and I’m very sorry if such people are in your family–who seek to dehumanize the other. Maybe the are [sic] scared and maybe they are acting out systemic biases they inherited and maybe they don’t know how to include you in their overly narrow definition of personhood, but that is not about you. That is not your fault. You are not broken or wrong; the social order is.

    3. When he gave advice for those figuring out what to do with their lives.

Study broadly and without fear. Learn a language if you can because that will make your life more interesting. Read a little bit every day. But most importantly try to surround yourself with people you like and make cool stuff with them. In the end, at least in my experience, what you do isn’t going to be nearly as interesting or important as who you do it with.

    4. When he opened up about his mental health.

During a Reddit “Ask Me Anything” session, a fan asked Green if he had any advice for “people who suffer from depression and the like.” The author answered by talking about his own mental health before closing with some encouraging words.

There is hope. There is treatment. You are not alone, and while I know the struggle feels at times completely hopeless and futile, there is a far shore for the vast majority of people, and I wish you the best.

    5. When he talked about what makes someone a “nerd” — and why it’s a good thing.

I love nerds! I am obsessed with nerds. I have a great affection for people who are intellectually engaged with the world, and who, who don’t treat everything superficially. And I think when people talk about nerdiness, what they’re really talking about is smart people who are trying to think hard about the world, and I don’t think that’s an insult, I think that’s a great thing.

And as a bonus, here’s one last quote from Green that might not count as wisdom, but still serves as some pretty solid advice.

    Happy birthday, John!

67 Times Rappers Name Dropped ‘Donald Trump’

    Rappers love Donald Trump.

Despite his many controversial stances in his presidential campaign platform, his name is synonymous with extreme wealth in the hip-hop world. Since the 1980s, rappers have mentioned Trump in their lyrics — in some cases have named entire songs after him.

Many rappers have praised his wealth, comparing their finances and fiscal aspirations to that of the multibillion dollar business mogul.

“I buy cars with straight cash, have meetings with Donald Trump,” said rapper Ludacris in his 2003 song, “Hip Hop Quotables.”

    But it doesn’t stop there.

“Trump is 90s hip-hop all day,” Comedian Mike Yard told host Larry Wilmore in a July episode of “The Nightly Show.”

Yard pointed out that Trump loves gold, has his own vodka and pulls “gangsta” moves like publicly giving out a U.S. Senator’s phone number.

“He’s like the 50 Cent of the Republican party,” Yard said. “All he needs is to get shot nine times and he’s golden.”

Since Trump has yet to drop a mixtape, we’ve compiled 67 hip-hop songs over the last 25 years that mention the mogul’s name in the video above.

    Enjoy!

Minion Flash Mob Proposal in Times Square

Rodrigo had plans to visit New York City from Mexico City with a group of friends. His girlfriend initially wasn’t going to be able to make it but she changed her mind and decided to come along. Rodrigo knew this was the right time to propose. His girlfriend LOVES Minions from the movie Despicable Me, and with the new Minions movie coming out, he decided that was the perfect way to propose.

He hired The Heart Bandits to coordinate a Minion flash mob right in the heart of Times Square for his marriage proposal. When he and Aranza got to Military Island in Times Square, they found one Minion amongst the crowd of street performers. They approached the Minion and asked her if they could take a photo with her. After they took the photo, the flash mob began. During the dance routine, the Minion’s pulled the couple into the center and danced around them in a circle. Zealot: The Life And Times Of Jesus Of Nazareth

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERNAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY Good Housekeeping • Booklist • Publishers Weekly • BookishFrom the internationally bestselling author of No god but God comes a fascinating, provocative, and meticulously researched biography that challenges long-held assumptions about the man we know as Jesus of Nazareth.   Two thousand years ago, an itinerant Jewish preacher and miracle worker walked across the Galilee, gathering followers to establish what he called the “Kingdom of God.” The revolutionary movement he launched was so threatening to the established order that he was captured, tortured, and executed as a state criminal.   Within decades after his shameful death, his followers would call him God.   Sifting through centuries of mythmaking, Reza Aslan sheds new light on one of history’s most influential and enigmatic characters by examining Jesus through the lens of the tumultuous era in which he lived: first-century Palestine, an age awash in apocalyptic fervor. Scores of Jewish prophets, preachers, and would-be messiahs wandered through the Holy Land, bearing messages from God. This was the age of zealotry—a fervent nationalism that made resistance to the Roman occupation a sacred duty incumbent on all Jews. And few figures better exemplified this principle than the charismatic Galilean who defied both the imperial authorities and their allies in the Jewish religious hierarchy.   Balancing the Jesus of the Gospels against the historical sources, Aslan describes a man full of conviction and passion, yet rife with contradiction; a man of peace who exhorted his followers to arm themselves with swords; an exorcist and faith healer who urged his disciples to keep his identity a secret; and ultimately the seditious “King of the Jews” whose promise of liberation from Rome went unfulfilled in his brief lifetime. Aslan explores the reasons why the early Christian church preferred to promulgate an image of Jesus as a peaceful spiritual teacher rather than a politically conscious revolutionary. And he grapples with the riddle of how Jesus understood himself, the mystery that is at the heart of all subsequent claims about his divinity.   Zealot yields a fresh perspective on one of the greatest stories ever told even as it affirms the radical and transformative nature of Jesus of Nazareth’s life and mission. The result is a thought-provoking, elegantly written biography with the pulse of a fast-paced novel: a singularly brilliant portrait of a man, a time, and the birth of a religion.Praise for Zealot  “Riveting . . . Teen Dupes New York Times Into Reporting That Dylann Roof Was A Brony

Amid the whirlwind that is a national breaking news story, one British teen wanted to see whether a major newspaper would publish utter lies.

Benjamin Wareing, 16, told a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter with The New York Times that he knew Dylann Roof, the suspected shooter in the killing of nine people in a Charleston church last week. He told the Times that Roof’s racist manifesto that surfaced online was eerily similar to a Tumblr page Roof posted on, and noted that the alleged murderer is a fan of “My Little Pony.”

But as Fusion points out, Wareing made it all up. He never knew Roof, never saw a Tumblr page — and never provided proof of its existence to the Times — and certainly didn’t know whether Roof was a Brony.

Wareing had tricked The Gray Lady’s Frances Robles into reporting this:

Benjamin Wareing, a blogger in Britain, said the writings are nearly identical to blog posts that Mr. Roof posted several months ago on a separate Tumblr page. Mr. Wareing was preparing to write an essay on the dangers of Tumblr and troubled youths, so he took notes on the writings.

“He just made really stupid but obvious statements about people from other races,” Mr. Wareing said in an email. “He would call black citizens ‘nuggets’ and such. He never made direct threats at all on Tumblr, at least it didn’t seem like that, just weird ramblings about how he felt he ‘didn’t fit in.’”

Among his writings were images of 9/11 “memes” and of “My Little Pony,” Mr. Wareing said.

The paragraphs were only available for a few hours, and Robles was working furiously to update the story during a time when every news outlet was trying to get exclusive information. Fusion reports that she updated her story more than a dozen times in 12 hours. But Wareing’s trick shows just how hungry publications are, and how quickly reporters — and their editors — will grab at sexy information and overlook the verification process.

Wareing said on his own blog that a friend of his in South Carolina — who was a “friend” of Roof’s on Facebook but didn’t know the suspect — was getting hassled by reporters on social media who were eager for a scoop. So Wareing gave the Times’ Robles some juicy information: the Tumblr anecdote, which was republished by several other news outlets.

“I told her that Dylann Roof had some ‘elusive’ and mysterious Tumblr page in which he posted his deepest thoughts,” Wareing wrote. “Without providing any screenshots or ANY proof of its existence other than my own word, the reporter published it as fact. Oops.”

Wareing also published email correspondence he had with Robles to back up his claims.

Wareing told The Huffington Post that no Times fact-checkers reached out before or after Robles’ story was published. He said her final message to him said, “A few readers are telling me you were a hoax…”

“People could think that this was a joke or a lark, but it wasn’t,” Wareing told Fusion, noting that he wanted to be a reporter some day. “Our ultimate goal of this was to see if a reporter would publish something that was completely untrue.”

The Times story has since been corrected and the following note attached:

    Editors’ Note: June 22, 2015
An earlier version of this article included a reference to a British blogger who claimed that Dylann Roof’s manifesto was similar to earlier blog entries Mr. Roof had written. That passage was removed from the article after questions were raised about the blogger and his claims. Subsequently, the blogger said in a post online that he had fabricated the information about Mr. Roof’s supposed earlier blog entries.

The New York Times declined to comment further.

Orgone at Underground Arts: Just Like Good Times

    2015-05-21-1432171139-3896133-OrgoneatUA_18613.jpg

Philadelphia – The room was called “The Black Box”, which was self explanatory, save for the red velvet curtain separating the stage area from a lounging space, complete with giant Oriental rug and deep sectional sofas. It reminded me of the so-called venues I’d frequented as a college student, but in only the good ways. Three days prior was the first time I’d even heard of Orgone, a jazzy, funky, soul outfit hailing from Los Angeles, and I literally only took notice because their promotional poster featured a great photo, with the lead singer’s resplendant afro bouncing while frozen in mid-jump. A sucker for an afro-ed woman, I made my way to the venue, Underground Arts, having done a cursory amount of research and listening to the band’s Soundcloud page in advance. I even donned a black t-shirt emblazoned with an image of Fela Kuti because I thought that would be apropos for the night. If I ever meet the photographer who made the photo used for that promotional poster, I owe them a hearty thanks, because my instincts were proven correct.

Prepared as I was, I knew this would be a dance filled night. The crowd, which slowly filtered in and tentatively received the excellent opening act, Sophistafunk, had to be cajoled forward through their self-imposed semi-circle force field keeping them from the stage. The warming up didn’t take long, though. The quartet’s infectious and groovy songs, with their MC/vocalist’s pattering rhymes made for a welcoming party starter. The talent buyers made a wise choice with Sophistafunk. Having toured with Orgone for the prior two weeks, it wasn’t necessary to remove their instruments from the stage between sets. A five minute, smile filled break preceded the headliners, who bounded onto the stage as if answering a challenge. This is when my decision to attend the show was instantly rewarded. They opened their set with a burning instrumental called Meat Machine”, which falls midpoint into their new album, Beyond The Sun. It’s a fitting announcement, and full of confidence. Having yet to see the band live, this introduction was funky from the gate – driving percussion, stabbing synths, searing guitar, et al., the tone was set for what was to come. Let me slow down first.

One of the most enduring memories of my childhood is of the famous painting by Ernie Barnes called “Sugar Shack”. It’s the one that appears during the opening and closing credits of the now classic television show, Good Times. Elongated bodies snaked and contorted around each other as they danced mesmerized by whatever music the painting captured, and the viewer simply wishes to be there. The scene conveys a comfort within the confines of a very crowded room – a comfort in the closeness of companionship and communal enjoyment of the moment. It’s hot. It’s funky. it’s sensual. Enter Adryon De Leon. Tall, golden haired, and broadly smiling, the room was hers in that instant. As the crowd is already an hour plus into their cardio program, they may have missed the nod to the Philadelphian duo, Zhane, as she belted into a funkier, meatier rendition of “Hey Mr. DJ”, their stalwart hit from the early nineties. But that’s easily excused as this wasn’t an excercise in music academia (though it was a treat for those paying attention). Apparently, an Orgone show is a funk party, plain and simple, and the band’s sole ambition to get down, by getting the crowd off. I looked around the room and the best, yet most blunt way I can describe the dynamic is that the whole crowd, the band (and maybe the bartenders, too) had their faces fixed in the expressions of good lovemaking. I think that is also how one defines the funk, too (at least some of us do). The groove is so hard it looks like it smells bad. Afterwards I explained that idea to the boyish looking bass player, Dale Jennings, who concurred that the band members feel the same thing on stage. He related that the sounds and energies emanating from all of the players on a tight crowded stage feel as if being hugged the whole time – almost as if in that famous Ernie Barnes painting.

My conversation with Dale did turn to music academia, though, of course. I mentioned to him that I noticed the band’s nod to the obscure Larry Levan edit of The Clash song, “The Magnificent Dance”, which they’d snuck into a cover of “It’s Serious” by Cameo. Being the bass player, I’d assumed he was responsible, since the bassline is most prominent and recognizeable. He was, in part. The original Orgon bassist, Tim Glum had played it on the studio recording, but as a fan of The Clash’s bass player, Paul Simonon, Dale opted to play the live version using a Fender P Bass and Ampeg SVT, as he had seen Simonon play. The whole outfit is made up of music nerds, as it turned out, and that explained their deep knowledge and proficiency. Each player was also afforded opportunities to solo, as if necessary to convince the crowd this band had chops. By this point, it wasn’t. It had been made abundantly clear. Listening the night before, I believed that much of what I’d heard would have been right at home on Larry Levan’s mid to late eighties Paradise Garage playlist. I mentioned to Dale and their keyboardist, Dan Hastie, one song in particular, “Keep The Fire Burnin'”, which sounded like a proto-typical dance song. It turned out to be a cover of a song originally recorded by Gwen McCrae – another Levan favorite. I mention all of this because, as a DJ, Levan was hugely influential in New York, and beyond, and many of the songs and styles we listen and dance to today were fostered on his turntables. The closing song, “Love Maker”, which turned into a call and response jam, sounded like a reworking of a Betty Davis song which I can’t put a name to, but it, too, was funk hewn from the earth. The music nerd in me recognized those influences in Orgone, and those sounds, those grooves are as elemental to partying as anything in my life experience.

It’s important to note that, while the band slips in some covers and nods in their set, there are plenty of original compositions – all equally accessible and fun, and the players are all stacked with charisma. The afro-ed Adryon sang and left, leaving the stage to burn up some more under the feet of the instrumentalists, nearly charring the floor in front of them, then returning to encore with “I Get Lifted” by KC and The Sunshine Band, which is a guaranteed crowd rouser, no matter where they are. I can’t say enough about how fortuitous it was for me seeing that poster and following my gut. Everyone should be so lucky.

Beyond The Sun was released two weeks ago. Orgone will continue to tour, making dates throughout the west coast this summer

7 Times 77-Year-Old Jane Fonda Proved She’s a Fashion Goddess

In the past year or so, if there’s been a red carpet with Jane Fonda on it, your eyes have basically been glued to the Hollywood icon and Grace & Frankie actor.
And if you’re surprised by her recent turn as style plate, you’re not alone. “I think it’s a hoot that, at my age, people are calling me a fashion icon,” the 77-year-old told W magazine while posing for its May cover. After spending years looking perfectly beautiful in sophisticated ensembles a well-heeled grandmother might wear (like this, back in 2010), Fonda’s turned it up in curve-hugging, super-sexy red carpet picks from the likes of Balmain and Atelier Versace.

    jane-fonda-blue-versace-dress-cannes-2015
For her turn on the Cannes red carpet this weekend, she picked cobalt blue Atelier Versace that was more or less the same as the white stunner supermodel Doutzen Kroes picked a few days prior.

    jane-fonda-white-suit-cannes-2015
For her most recent Cannes appearance, she picked a disco-sexy white suit with a serious statement necklace.

    jane-fonda-black-sequin-dress-cannes-2015
At a formal dinner at the film festival, she opted for sparkly black with a lowcut neckline that showed off a fantastic diamond necklace.

At the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, it was skintight black sequins from Donna Karan.

The outfit that first made everyone sit up and take notice of Fonda’s sexier style was the green Balmain jumpsuit she rocked at the Grammys (it caused Rihanna to run up to her backstage and say, “Ohmigod! I want to be you when I grow up!”). The sexy style has been spotted on plenty of other bombshells, including Chrissy Teigen at Sunday’s Billboard awards.

    jane-fonda-red-dress-golden-globes-2015
For this year’s Golden Globes, it was more Versace with sexy cutouts at the side.

Partying after this year’s Oscars, she pulled a Jennifer Lopez, going super sheer in a beaded jumpsuit.

“I’ve always known what I like on my body. I’m best when I’m wearing something structured, with no frills or bows. Something that will show my waist and bum, because I’ve always had a good bum,” she told W. Of the Balmain that started it all? “I took one look at that jumpsuit, and I said, ‘That’s it!'”

Here Are Gifs Of All The Times Alicia And Kalinda Drank Together On ‘The Good Wife’

Warning: This post contains spoilers from the first six seasons of “The Good Wife,” up to and including the season 6 finale.

When the sixth season of “The Good Wife” came to a close on May 10, it marked the end of one of TV’s most powerful, complicated relationships: Kalicia. Up until this point of the marvelous show, attorney Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies) and investigator Kalinda Sharma (Archie Panjabi) were alternately the best of friends and the bitterest of enemies. There were runs of episodes where they almost always shown together, and much longer runs where they were never in the same room. Gossip around Hollywood chalks the latter up to a vicious but completely mysterious fight between Margulies and Panjabi, which only makes the on-screen relationship between the two characters more fascinating.

Amidst all the turmoil, there was one thing you could count on with these two: They would drink. They loved drinking, a trait they share with several other powerful female protagonists on TV dramas.

So to commemorate their glorious friendship, The Huffington Post combed through six seasons of “The Good Wife” to find all the scenes where Kalicia drank together. Here they are.

    2015-05-18-1431987861-8079182-Season1Episode1AliciaDrinking.gif

The ritual began in the show’s pilot, meaning it predates even the appearance of such staple characters of the show as Eli Gold (Alan Cumming) and David Lee (Zach Grenier). That’s how integral it is to the show! In this first episode, Alicia and Kalinda work together to crack a difficult murder case involving a faked carjacking. After Alicia presents their killer evidence, and the jury goes out to deliberate, Kalinda tells her that it’s a Stern Lockhart & Gardner tradition for lawyers to take tequila shots after their first jury trial.

    2015-05-18-1431987898-1029929-Season1Episode1KalindaDrinking.gif

After Alicia takes her shot, Kalinda reveals that this was a trick: no such tradition exists. For a moment, it seems like Kalinda won’t drink her tequila. But then, of course, she does. Alicia smiles.

    2015-05-18-1431987934-7707923-Season1Episode11KalindaDrinking.gif

The next nine episodes feature lots of interactions between Alicia and Kalinda, but none of them involve alcohol, sadly. They don’t drink together again until the 11th episode. Even then, it’s not in a bar, but in a room in their office: they drink beer and eat kettle corn while watching TV news related to the two cases of the week.

    2015-05-18-1431988039-8472490-Season1Episode14KalindaDrinking.gif

In episode 14, though, Alicia and Kalinda hit the bar again, because they have some personal matters to discuss. (Glenn Childs has asked Kalinda to testify against Alicia’s husband Peter.) This time, Kalinda orders a dark beer…

…while Alicia drinks what looks like tequila again. But she sips it instead of shooting it.

    2015-05-18-1431988156-9689967-Season1Episode21AliciaDrinking.gif

This drinking session apparently goes well, because they go to another bar in episode 21. Alicia drinks what appears to be a martini with olives.

    Kalinda gets another dark beer.

    2015-05-18-1431988228-9069830-Season1Episode22BothDrinking.gif

The very next episode, the second-to-last of season 1, opens with Alicia and Cary finding out that Alicia got the one full-time position they had been competing for all season. Kalinda waits for Alicia down the hall and, knowing that Alicia will likely feel crummy for beating out Cary, insists that they go to get drinks. They start by ordering two tequila shots in a row.

    2015-05-18-1431988316-6076505-Season1Episode22AliciaDrinking.gif

They keep drinking, as is evident from the plethora of glasses that accumulate on the bar top.

    2015-05-18-1431988346-6286008-Season1Episode22KalindaDrinking.gif

All that tequila gets them pretty wasted. A cute, younger guy hits on them, sending them into a giggle fit. He buys them yet another round of drinks.

    2015-05-18-1431988373-3979951-Season1Episode22AliciaDrinkingAgain.gif

These extra drinks send them into the truthbomb-dropping stage of drunkenness, prompting Alicia to ask Kalinda whether she’s a lesbian.

Kalinda refuses to answer, much to Alicia’s chagrin. But then a call to Alicia’s cell phone saves her. Will tells Alicia she has to go see a client, so she composes herself and goes to Colin Sweeney’s house, where she finds him handcuffed to a dead female body. Alicia maintains admirable composure, considering her inebriation. Close call!

    2015-05-18-1431988410-1505446-Season2Episode6KalindaDrinking.gif

Alicia and Kalinda next drink together in the sixth episode of season two, at an office party to celebrate a huge class action settlement. While drinking champagne, Alicia notes that Kalinda doesn’t look as happy as everyone else at the firm.

    2015-05-18-1431988573-2916275-Season2Episode9AliciaDrinking.gif

Just three episodes later, in “Nine Hours,” one of the best episodes of the entire series, Alicia and Kalinda work on a stressful death row case from Alicia’s apartment. At a particularly trying moment, Alicia grabs them two beers out of the fridge.

    2015-05-18-1431988636-9835993-Season2Episode9BothDrinking.gif

They drink them on Alicia’s bed. Slash fic alert!

    2015-05-18-1431989198-858921-Season2Episode17BothDrinking.gif

They actually only visit a bar one time in the second season, in the 17th episode. They return to their beloved tequila shots.

A couple episodes later, Alicia discovers that Kalinda had slept with Peter, one time, many years ago, before they were friends. She’s completely furious. The revelation creates a rift between her and Peter — and, more importantly, between her and Kalinda. Throughout most of season 3, they only speak when work requires them to. Some have speculated that the real-life tiff between Julianna Margulies and Archie Panjabi first emerged around this time, though Margulies attributed the break to natural developments in the plot.

    2015-05-18-1431989242-7090087-Season3Episode22KalindaDrinking.gif

In any case, they finally drink together again in the final episode of season 3. Though it begins as a kind of “Parent Trap” situation — Cary invited them both to the same bar — they actually manage to have a bit of fun.

    2015-05-18-1431989277-8133208-Season3Episode22AliciaDrinking.gif

They even take tequila shots together!

    2015-05-18-1431989347-2365038-Season4Episode6KalindaDrinking.gif

This bar visit sets off something of a renaissance in their friendship. They visit bars three times in the first half of season 4. They sip red wine and whiskey in episode 6.

    2015-05-18-1431989381-2828868-Season4Episode9AliciaDrinking.gif

Cary joins them for some cocktails of an indeterminate nature in episode 9.

    2015-05-18-1431989741-77136-Season4Episode10AliciaDrinking.gif

And then in episode 10, they go back to tequila shots. Kalinda is uncharacteristically late to the drinks in this episode, which worries Alicia.

    2015-05-18-1431989768-8150781-Season4Episode10KalindaDrinking.gif

When she shows up, a few minutes after Alicia takes her first shot, she reveals that the drama surrounding her relationship with her erratic husband is over. What exactly happened to him is unclear, though when Kalinda says there’s no chance of his ever returning, it’s hard not to suspect that she killed him. He was a jerk, though, so this is an occasion for tequila.

    2015-05-18-1431989799-8829444-Season4Episode11KalindaBringsWine.gif

One of the sweetest of their drinks sessions comes in the next episode, when Alicia is staying at a remote hotel while waiting to be allowed to depose a key witness in a case. Kalinda brings her fresh clothes — and a bottle of red wine.

    2015-05-18-1431989853-9096019-Season4Episode11NeitherDrinking.gif

They lie in side-by-side beds glumly, chatting about this and that while drinking glasses of red wine. It’s cute. It seems like maybe they’re on track to be best friends again.

But then — nothing. In a big way.

Alicia and Kalinda see each other briefly in the next episode, but after that, don’t share a scene for more than two seasons after this hotel tryst. There’s no on-screen blowout to explain their bizarre separation, so this is when many (starting with Buzzfeed) speculated that Panjabi and Margulies got in some terrible fight. No one in the press has ever managed to figure out what transpired; it’s one of the best-kept secrets in Hollywood.

Whatever happened, though — and something must have happened — it kept Alicia and Kalinda apart right up until the very end of season 6.

    2015-05-19-1432057374-1243209-Season6Episode21TugOfWar.gif

They sort of reunite in the season’s penultimate episode, after Kalinda has fled town to avoid being killed by Lemond Bishop, when Alicia thinks back to two times they’d met before. But the flashback scenes are either filmed in such a way that the two actresses may never have even been in the same room, or are repurposed footage from season 1. Fun fact, though: although this same tug-of-war over Alicia’s phone was shown in the drunken bar night in Season 1, Episode 22, the exact moment above is shot from two different camera angles in the two episodes.

    2015-05-18-1431992398-6464942-Season6Episode22KalindaOrdering.gif

In the season 6 finale, they finally reunite for real. Kalinda surprises Alicia at a bar just before she leaves town for good. She orders two tequila shots for old time’s sake.

    2015-05-18-1431992366-6225483-Season6Episode22AliciaDrinking.gif

Then, though, something curious happens: Most of the shots in the scene show only one of the two actresses clearly. For that reason, many people started to speculate that they hadn’t actually filmed most of it together.

    2015-05-18-1431992454-480308-Season6Episode22BothDrinking.gif

On May 15, TVLine reported, based on some anonymous inside intel, that the scene had indeed been faked. The shots that show only one face clearly were filmed with body doubles filling in for the obscured actor, while Panjabi and Margulies filmed the shots that include both characters separately, and then the footage was merged together in post-production.

    2015-05-18-1431992526-68236-Season6Episode22Goodbye.gif

The fact that Panjabi and Margulies couldn’t overcome their rumored enmity even for a day of filming made the parting — likely the last time these two characters ever see each other, since Kalinda is now officially on the lam — even sadder. Kalicia is, or, was, a friendship for the ages. These drinking buddies will live in our hearts and livers forever. And we look forward to revisiting the early season heyday of their relationship many times to come.

#1 New York Times bestseller named one of the best books of the year by Good Housekeeping, Booklist, Publishers Weekly and Bookish. From the internationally bestselling author of No God but God, comes a fascinating, provocative, and meticulously researched biography that challenges long-held assumptions about the man we know as Jesus of Nazareth. Two thousand years ago, an itinerant Jewish preacher and miracle worker walked across the Galilee, gathering followers to establish what he called the Kingdom of God. The revolutionary movement he launched was so threatening to the established order that he was captured, tortured, and executed as a state criminal. Within decades after his shameful death, his followers would call him God. Sifting through centuries of mythmaking, Reza Aslan sheds new light on one of history’s most influential and enigmatic characters by examining Jesus through the lens of the tumultuous era in which he lived.+Author: Reza Aslan +Publisher: Random House+Pages: 336

He pulled her toward him by the waist and suctioned his mouth on the nipple before Montie had time to react. “Oh God,” she moaned as his lips tugged at her flesh. His mouth felt so damn good on her. 5 Times You Really Should Take Your Engagement Ring Off

    by Elizabeth Mitchell, BRIDES

    2015-03-05-1425572367-5482630-TimestoTakeOffEngagementRing.jpg

He liked it so he put a ring on it, and now you don’t want to take said ring off? We completely understand. However, if you want your bling to continue shining bright like a diamond for a really long time (and we know you do!), it’s important to not wear it while you’re busy doing these five things.

    1. Working Out
Before you break a sweat, it’s a good idea to take that pretty little ring off. “The materials used in diamond jewelry, platinum and gold, are to a certain degree, soft,” explains Mr. David Watling, De Beers Head of Diamond Centre. So if you rock your ring while participating in certain activities that put pressure on these metals, you risk changing their shape. “And if the shape of a ring is bent enough, you then risk bending the claws that hold the diamond and your diamond falling out.” Same goes for sports; if you play soccer, basketball, tennis or participate in any other physical activity, do yourself a solid and keep your ring in a safe place, preferably at home, so you won’t accidently damage it during competition.

    2. Moisturizing
Lotions and moisturizers may be great for your skin, not so much for your ring though, as excess build up can diminish the brilliance and dull your stone over time. To protect your rock and ensure a cloudy layer of film doesn’t form on it, wait until your hands have completely dried before slipping your bling back on.

    3. Primping
Did you know that cosmetics, hair sprays, perfumes and other substances and chemicals commonly used by women could cause build-up of grime, weakening the natural sheen of your ring? According to Nadine Tacorian Arzerounian, president of operations and design for Tacori, it’s true! “I take off my rings the moment I walk into my house so I can seamlessly move through my nightly routine, whether that be cleaning, cooking or showering, without concern of taking my rings on and off,” she says. Want to get rid of the grease on your diamonds? Watling recommends gently rinsing them with hot water and dishwashing liquid. “When doing this, don’t forget to first secure the sink or use a bowl,” he warns. “Then dry your jewelry with a cotton or linen towel before using a polishing cloth for a sparkling finish.”

    4. Swimming
Never, ever, ever wear your expensive jewelry in the ocean or in the pool! For one, cold water “shrinks” your fingers, making it that much easier for an already loose engagement ring to disappear during a swim. Chlorine, on the other hand, can damage and discolor the mounting of your ring and your platinum, gold or white gold wedding band.

    5. Cleaning
Not only can you easily bang up your engagement ring on tough surfaces (think bathroom counters, kitchen floors, etc.) cleaning the house, but you can also do serious damage to the stone and setting. You can even potentially alter the color, thanks to harsh chemicals like bleach and ammonia found in many common household cleaners.

A Play for Our Times: Pia Wilson’s Turning the Glass Around

A remarkable new play, Turning the Glass Around, by Pia Wilson, fearlessly plunges into the ever-morphing conversation about immigration, race and class. Turning the Glass Around evokes images of Death of A Salesman. Wilson creates a nuanced pressure cooker played out when an economic and emotional meltdown befalls a young interracial couple striving towards the American dream. They forge ahead in spite of their difficult financial circumstances and their parents’ cultural expectations of them.

    2014-11-02-IMG_20141030_215051_387.jpg

Daina Lee ( Carmen Gill) is an African-American woman who grew up in wealth and privilege. Much to the chagrin of her parents, she married Korean-American, Philip Lee ( Don Castro ) whose mother (Kristen Hung) doesn’t hesitate to express her harsh feelings about Daina, and about his decision not to marry a good Korean girl. Very soon into the play, Philip loses his job in finance during the recession. His job loss occurs just after his father dies. The sting of this loss is coupled with the fact that Philip is convinced it was a racially motivated firing having to do with the discomfort that the traditional Korean mourning ritual caused others in the office.

Riding the subway to and from endless job interviews, he becomes obsessed with the idea that he has discovered his doppelganger in the form of a blonde-haired, blue-eyed man (Topher Mikels). His descent into this delusion only exacerbates the financial struggle that losing his job already caused in their marriage. Daina stays home all day, becoming increasingly concerned about her husband’s mental health, but also tormented because she can’t ask her parents for help. In Philip’s mind, assistance from her parents will prove that he is incapable of living up to the American dream.

Daina went to the best private schools and hails from a prominent family who clearly never approved of their daughter’s marriage to the son of Korean immigrants. While she is able to talk easily about their differences, he harbors a grudge against his public school education — a reminder of the fact that she “married down.” To make matters worse, Philip’s imaginary “doppelganger,” suddenly arrives at their house, angry and threatening to call the police because, as it turns out, Philip has been spending his days not on a job search, but following this white man around and taking pictures of him on his cell phone.

Philip’s white “doppelganger” meanwhile, takes an interest in Daina and his visits become frequent. Daina herself realizes that she has more in common with this well-bred white country club hedge fund manager than her own husband. Their parents, it turns out, even know each other.

Added to the domestic chaos, Philip’s father appears as an apparition to him (Sam Gold) and forces him to confront his deepest fears and failings directly. In these poignant dream sequences, Philip recognizes that he has an obligation to make the ancestral spirits happy even though he has chosen a path that he knows they cannot understand. The ghost is more of a monster, one who is shaken by all that he sees.

The brilliance of incorporating such phenomena as ghosts into the story is that it points to the spiritual dimension of the American nightmare (Philip’s mother’s term for the American dream). Ghosts stand in for all that we don’t see and cannot, as mere humans, simply work out and resolve in our blindness. In our contemporary recession-slapped America, many tensions involving differences of all sorts, not just ethnicity, class and race, but also gender, age, religious and educational differences bubble to the surface. This portrait of one such complicated dynamic gives a glimpse into this unique moment in our history.

And as such, I can only say, this is just great theater. You experience life from another point of view and recognize what is happening right now, in the world in which we live. Wilson’s prose is effortless. She writes with grace, empathy and brilliance about what we think of when we say we are American. Kevin Spacey should be very proud of having helped give this play its debut, as the production was supported by his foundation. Having just completed its run at Teatro Círculo in New York, I look forward to the next production of this play, and of course, seeing whatever Pia Wilson comes up with next.

Pornhub Times Square Billboard Meets Stiff Opposition, Comes Down

It was a case of premature evacuation.

A Pornhub billboard erected Monday in Times Square has come down almost as quickly as it went up.

The sign — which displayed the winning entry in a contest for a non-pornographic ad concept — read, “All You Need Is Hand,” with two hands forming a heart.

But the relatively tame campaign seemed to meet stiff opposition. Pornhub Vice President Corey Price told The Huffington Post the DoubleTree hotel, which occupies the building where the sign was mounted, objected strongly enough to have it removed early Wednesday.

“Our initial agreement with City Outdoor, the company that owns the billboard space, was that we had full approval for the ad to be placed in the initial location,” Price said.

A DoubleTree employee contacted by HuffPost declined to comment. A request for comment to Hilton, the hotel’s parent company, was not immediately returned.

Now Pornhub is scouting alternative sites for the ad in New York City and other metropolitan areas, Price said.

But the mainstream campaign hasn’t gone away entirely. To bolster the marketing, Pornhub put together a video with the Gotham Rock Choir that melds the Beatles’ classic “All You Need Is Love” with Pornhub’s “All You Need Is Hand” parody version.

We’re not sure the Fab Four would have approved, but what the heck:

It seemed like a good idea at the time, right?

Wait, no it didn’t. It wasn’t a good idea at all. And deep down you knew. But you forged ahead anyway, fairly positive that — based on years of not dying while doing stupid stuff — everything would work out just fine in the end.

The following people apparently had that same thought. As if you needed to be reminded, please, don’t try this at home.

The Scorpion and the Frog: High Times and High Crimes

The Scorpion and the Frog: High Times and High Crimes

"I can’t help myself. It is my nature". Just as in the classic story, a duped frog is stung and drowns along with his assailant; Donato Ripelli overlooked the "nature" of mobsters and inevitably is stung. His is a river of multiple indictments, a possible prison sentence, loss of wealth and fear for his life and that of his family. His choice of associates, impaired by his drive and his greed, would prove his undoing. His is a story of the extraordinary and rapid rise and fall of an immigrant who found America’s Street of Gold-Wall Street. During the mid-nineties, he became wealthy beyond his wildest dreams and enjoyed the good life along with its bad offerings. His flamboyant and extravagant lifestyle with fast cars, penthouse apartments, designer accessories and exotic travel, was a testament to his success-his talents-his greed. Donato believes that the dance on Wall Street isn’t clean and never was. It is performed mostly on the gray surface of hyperbole, hucksterism and deceit. Donato learned quickly that there are shades to that gray and, for he who invites Scorpions, a dark side where you will be stung. This is a true story with real criminals, with real victims and very real law enforcement. It is also an international story revealing the ease and facility of money laundering and crime beyond our borders. His story is entertaining but provides an important and revealing glimpse at the corruption that lives within the investment community-that undermines our confidence-that subjects all of us to very real losses. Donato has been corrupted by the American Dream.

12 Times The Women Of ‘Game Of Thrones’ Were Super Fierce

For all of us die-hard “Game Of Thrones” fans, this Sunday is a sad one. The season four finale is upon us, and while it’s rumored to be the best yet, Sundays without GoT are no Sundays at all.

While the men of GoT are badass in their own right, from Jon Snow’s daring adventures beyond the wall to Tyrion Lannister’s perpetual wit (seriously, if Tyrion dies I will riot), it’s the ladies who kick some serious ass — and they don’t even need a sword to do it. And although not all of the female characters are beloved (Cersei Lannister better get the “Red Wedding” treatment pronto), there’s no denying that they’re all impressively fierce.

In honor of these killer female characters, we’ve put together a list of 12 times the ladies of “Game Of Thrones” were way fiercer than the men over the past four seasons:

    1. When Daenerys Targaryen supported #YesAllWomen without even realizing it.

    satcanniversary

    2. That time Brienne of Tarth fought a bear… and lived.

    3. When Cersei made it clear she takes sh*t from no one. No one.

    satcanniversary

    4. When Daenerys ate a horse’s heart like it was chicken.

    satcanniversary

    5. Every time Arya Stark is on screen.

    satcanniversary

    6. When Ygritte made it clear she can take care of herself.

    satcanniversary

    7. When Margery Tyrell did anything and everything to ensure her Queendom.

    satcanniversary

    8. When Ygritte offered Jon Snow some simple sex advice.

    satcanniversary

    9. That time Daenerys walked through some fire and came out with three baby dragons.

    satcanniversary

    10. When Olenna Tyrell eluded to possibly aiding in the killing of King Joffrey and everyone was like YES.

    satcanniversary

    11. When Ygritte dodged an arrow like a boss during “The Watchers On The Wall.”

    12. Any time Melisandre manipulated a situation to get everyone to do exactly what she wanted. Teach us your ways.

Go on with your bad selves, ladies.

New York Times Prints ’12 Years A Slave’ Correction 161 Years Later

    Better late than never?

An 1853 report in the New York Times on the story that would eventually be told in the Oscar-winning film “12 Years a Slave” went viral this week, but sharp-eyed readers spotted something amiss.

Rebecca Skloot, author of “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” tweeted:

Today, the newspaper of record corrected the record:

An article on Jan. 20, 1853, recounting the story of Solomon Northup, whose memoir “12 Years a Slave” became a movie 160 years later that won the best picture Oscar at the 86th Academy Awards on Sunday night, misspelled his surname as Northrop. And the headline misspelled it as Northrup. The errors came to light on Monday after a Twitter user pointed out the article in The Times archives. (The errors notwithstanding, The Times described the article as “a more complete and authentic record than has yet appeared.”)

After the correction was published online, Skloot noted on Twitter: “The irony, of course, is that I’m a terrible speller and proofreader.”

Qualifying Times: Points of Change in U.s. Women’s Sport

Qualifying Times: Points of Change in U.s. Women’s Sport

This perceptive, lively study explores U.S. women’s sport through historical “points of change”: particular products or trends that dramatically influenced both women’s participation in sport and cultural responses to women athletes. Beginning with the seemingly innocent ponytail, the subject of the Introduction, scholar Jaime Schultz challenges the reader to look at the historical and sociological significance of now-common items such as sports bras and tampons and ideas such as sex testing and competitive cheerleading. Tennis wear, tampons, and sports bras all facilitated women’s participation in physical culture, while physical educators, the aesthetic fitness movement, and Title IX encouraged women to challenge (or confront) policy, financial, and cultural obstacles. While some of these points of change increased women’s physical freedom and sporting participation, they also posed challenges. Tampons encouraged menstrual shame, sex testing (a tool never used with male athletes) perpetuated narrowly-defined cultural norms of femininity, and the late-twentieth-century aesthetic fitness movement fed into an unrealistic beauty ideal. Ultimately, Schultz finds that U.S. women’s sport has progressed significantly but ambivalently. Although participation in sports is no longer uncommon for girls and women, Schultz argues that these “points of change” have contributed to a complex matrix of gender differentiation that marks the female athletic body as different than–as less than–the male body, despite the advantages it may confer.

    Sport in Ancient Times

    Sport in Ancient Times

Crowther offers a fascinating look at the role of sport as practiced in several important civilizations in the ancient world. He not only probes the games themselves, but explores the ways in which athletics figured into cultural arenas that extended beyond physical prowess to military associations, rituals, status, and politics. Sport in Ancient Times has four distinct parts: the Prehistoric Age, historic Greece, ancient Italy, and the Byzantine Empire. Beginning with the earliest civilizations, Crowther examines the military and recreational aspects of sports in prehistoric Egypt, with brief references to other river-valley cultures in Sumeria, Mesopotamia, and Persia. He looks at the rituals of Cretan bull-leaping and boxing in the Bronze Age, the high status of sports in Mycenaean Greece, and the funeral games in the Trojan War as described by the epic poet Homer. In what he terms the historic period, Crowther examines the significance of the ancient Olympic Games, the events of Greek athletics, and the attitude of other civilizations (notably Rome) towards them. He attempts to discover to what extent the Romans believed in the famous ideal of Juvenal, a sound mind in a sound body, and discusses the significance of the famous Baths not only for sport, but also for culture and society. He likewise explores the Roman emphasis on spectator sports and the use of gladiatorial contests and chariot racing for political purposes (the concept of bread and games). The section on the Byzantine Empire focuses, notably, on chariot racing and the riots at sporting contests-riots reminiscent of crowd violence in modern sports such as soccer. Crowther closes with perspectives that bring to life some of the issues revealed in previous chapters. These include a comparison of the social status and significance of a famous Olympic athlete (Milo), a Roman gladiator (Hermes), and a Byzantine chariot racer (Porphyrius). He also addresses the changing role of women in sports in antiq
