Green People: New Designer Patrick McDowell, Not a ‘One Trick Pony’

Upcycling materials is nothing new for fashion designers, but there is something to be noted about the way sustainably minded designer Patrick McDowell views (and speaks about) the industry that is fresh.
The 24-year-old Central Saint Martins grad bashes the wholesale model in favor of his mental health and partners instead with the likes of Depop (running an upcycling workshop in Selfridges), Higher Studio (offering his garments for rent) and brands such as Swarovski and Burberry (upcycling materials).
McDowell shares his views on wholesale, fashion shows and how he plans to grow his business and personal brand with new partnerships.
WWD: Finally, this appetite for sustainability is broadening.
Patrick McDowell: There’s a wider appetite for people to be nice and to work together and help each other — and the creativity actually improves that way, too. My thesis was based on creative learning and removing the idea that creative learning is about art and design but applying that thinking to any industry or any subject or any person at any age.
Selfishly, it’s just more interesting that way, too.
WWD: Where do you see yourself building these strategic partnerships, and how do you want to work with brands?
P.M.: It’s not about working with brands that are like

Magician Turns Girlfriend Into His Fiancee With His Best Trick Yet

For Neil Henry, the writing wasn’t on the wall, it was in a can of alphabet soup. And it spelled “–M-A-R-R-Y—M-E–“.

Henry, a professional magician, employed all his skills earlier this week to surprise his girlfriend, Charlie Gardner, by proposing to her in front of a live audience at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, inviting her on stage under the pretense of needing an assistant.

Henry set up the bit by first downing a cold can of alphabet soup and slurping up a long piece of string, then asking Gardner to join him on stage.

As she looked on suspiciously, Henry proceeded to slowly pull the string from his mouth. One by one, letters popped out, attached to the string as if by magic, slowly building to one big question.

Gardner reacted with disbelief at first, which quickly turned to shock and tears as she realized just what was happening.

“Having you in my life is real magic,” Henry told her as she stood on the side of the stage, “and I never want that magic to end.”

With a magical flourish, he then lit a piece of paper on fire, somehow turned it into a ring, and popped the question.

Gardner, in between squeals of “oh my god!” said yes.

In an email to The Huffington Post, Henry explained the alphabet soup bit regularly features in his show, though it involves a random audience member and a random word.

“When I decided to ask Charlie to marry me (easiest decision of my life by the way!!), the idea of vomiting up the proposal made me laugh so much I just had to do it,” he said. “I told my mum and she said eeewww… it was then that I knew it was perfect!”

He said he considered tying the ring to the end of the string, “but thought that was just a little too gross!”

Afterward, Henry said he bought the entire audience a drink, then the happy couple went out and grabbed a bite to eat.

“Charlie once said to me that if I was ever to propose it better be amazing as I’m a magician, so I was really keen to do something cool,” he added. “I’m so happy she liked it…and even more happy she said yes!!!”

Sure beats another rabbit-in-a-hat trick.

Don’t Buy Another Pair of Jeans Until You Read This: The Trick for Longer, Leaner Legs

It feels like there are a million different pairs of jeans out there. Some are good and some are…ugly. A pair that fits perfectly is worth a million bucks, while others that don’t do anything for your shape should be tossed as quickly as you can get your arms moving. And even though we just discovered that most of us have way too many pairs in the closet, there’s no time like the new year to toss what doesn’t work and invest in a pair that’s guaranteed to make you look ah-mazing.

For expert insight on fit, I consulted with Sarah Ahmed, creative director of DL1961, and pestered her about how my legs can look long and lean because, honestly, what girl doesn’t want that?

For length, your best bet is “by far a mid-rise skinny jean. An 8.5- to 9-inch rise really does miracles for the appearance of both the waist and legs.” As an alternative, try a kick flare (it’s the style on the far left above). It’s more subtle than the mega-bells you might be thinking of and can actually add inches, especially if you get your pair tailored to wear with heels or platforms.

If you want to slim stems, Sarah said to look for styles with longer inseams (ask a sales associate to identify some of their options) and try on the darkest shade possible. “A deep blue or black wash tends to smooth the legs, making them appear much leaner.” I brought up the question of moto ribbing, which I think looks eternally cool but can cut legs in a not-so-flattering way. “You can have too much horizontal detailing,” she warned me, suggesting I shop for “ribbing that’s slanted to not have that dreaded digging-in effect.”

What’s your current favorite pair of jeans? Is there a miracle brand that always looks good on you?

One Simple Trick to Dramatically Reduce Stress in 2014

Life rarely perfectly follows a plan.

But that doesn’t mean that you should just give up and not make a plan. It means that you should embrace a realistic expectation of what planning can and can not do for you:

Planning Can Not:

  • Guarantee everything will go perfectly.
  • Make all work fit within the desired estimates.
  • Eliminate all unexpected obstacles.

Planning Can:

  • Give you clarity on your priorities.
  • Reassure you that you’re not forgetting anything.
  • Allow you to get the most important things done on time.

The importance of realistic planning was re-emphasized for me in the completion of my book manuscript — my biggest professional project to date. I would like to share a bit with you about this simple yet very powerful secret to dramatically reduce stress:

On Time is Late
I’m a realistic optimist in the sense that I think very positively but I plan very responsibly. A very simple, yet important principle that I’ve incorporated into my planning is the idea that “on time is late.”

This principle resulted from the fact that I used to plan to do things “on time,” yet then sometimes ended up super stressed out or slightly missing deadlines whenever something unexpected happened.

To solve that problem and reduce my anxiety, I started setting personal deadlines for myself before the actual deadlines. With short, rather predictable projects, that could look like simply making a goal to get things done the day before they’re due. But with larger, more complex projects, like my book, that means pushing myself to try to get everything done far in advance of when it is due.

For instance, I finished writing my manuscript two and a half weeks before my deadline so that I would have a few weeks to go back through and do the style edits and proofreading. And I’m so glad that I did! This was my first book writing project, and I vastly underestimated how long it would take me to do all of the fine tuning and tweaks. But because I gave myself extra time and a personal deadline before my “real” one, I had the time to do what needed to be done and even to delegate some of the work.

This one mental shift in your approach to planning could dramatically decrease your stress levels. Here are some ideas of how to apply the concept of “on time is late” in other areas of your life:

  • Prepare for meetings the day before they happen, including reviewing notes, location and any items you need to bring.
  • Before you go to the grocery store, look out over the entire week to see if there are any gatherings like a BBQ or a birthday party that require some special food purchases.
  • When you have a special event that requires a gift, like a wedding, put time into your calendar to shop for the gift on the next possible free weekend or evening. You want to avoid that last-minute panic at Bed Bath & Beyond just minutes before the bride walks down the aisle.
  • If you have people working for you, delegate projects to them as soon as they come into your inbox instead of waiting until it’s too late to pass them off.
  • Plan on finishing any large projects like presentations or creative projects at least a couple of days before they are actually due so you have a buffer and time to “sit” on them.
  • If you need to leave the house at a certain time, get completely ready first and then work on optional activities.
  • When you have a big trip, go through a checklist like this one at least a week before you leave.
  • If it’s very important you arrive somewhere on time that’s very far away, try to arrive the night before. If it’s very important you arrive somewhere on time that’s near, give yourself at least a 30 minute buffer unless you’re in a big city in which you’ll want to plan even more time.

Aiming for early will play a dramatic role in helping you to achieve more success with less stress!
