Pose Invariant Face Recognition Using Pca

Pose Invariant Face Recognition Using Pca

Both face detection and recognition are very curious areas in the field of image analysis, computer vision and pattern recognition that has received a big deal of attention over the last few years. It has been widely used for the purpose of security and forensic science for identify of an individual e.g. at the place of video surveillance, airports, traffic, terrorist attacks. To analyze the information of face images: faster, robust and efficient face detection and recognition algorithms are required. This system has been facing problems in recognizing subjects of varying poses, illumination conditions, facial expressions, and face occlusions. Due to variation in pose relative to camera certain features like smile, open eyes or mouth, left side or right side of mouth or eyes, occluded mouth or eyes can’t be detected and extracted properly. It will be a critical task to detect a person with varying poses in vertical direction. In this work we present, face detection is performed by skin tone. Through PCA extract features and system is getting trained and tested. For face recognition process, Euclidean distance is measured and based on that minimum distance face is recognized.

Lisa Rinna Changes Her Hairdo for the First Time in 20 Years Using Drugstore Dye

As Brandi Glanville once told Lisa Rinna in season 5 of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills: ‘You’ve had the same hairdo for 20 years!” Well, not anymore.

The Melrose Place alum debuted her new darker hairstyle on Watch What Happens Live! on Tuesday, after the third and final part of the RHOBH reunion special aired on Bravo.

Owen Kolasinski/BFA/REX/Shutterstock; Heidi Gutman

“I mean, I wanted to try something new, and you know, I’ve had the same hairdo,” Rinna, 52, explained to host Andy Cohen about her coiffed strands. “For 20 years I’ve had the same hairdo and I thought, ‘Why not?’ You know?”

The mother of two also added that the hair transformation was a bit of a spontaneous decision that was influenced by the recent Met Gala.

Instagram Photo

“I darkened it a little bit. I went to the drugstore last night, and I got this fanciful – I don’t know what it is. It’ll wash out,” she said. “Because my highlights were all crazy all over the place and I thought, ‘I’ll just darken it a little bit.’ I had a vision. It was sort of, like, for the Met Ball, the ‘Manus Machina’ look for the Met Ball.”

So will this darker color be permanent change? “I like my hairdo though,” she clarified. “I really do.”

Instagram Photo

Rinna’s signature, short hairstyle previously featured streaks of honey blonde highlights. She most memorably sported brunette locks in April 2015 when she ditched her shaggy pixie cut for dark Kardashian-esque extensions in response to Glanville’s insults about her hair.

One of the reasons Rinna likes to rock a bob is because husband of close to 20 years Harry Hamlin prefers a shorter ‘do.

Instagram Photo

“Harry likes it. He always says, ‘Keep it short.’ So I like to keep my husband happy; that is not news,” she said during a Access Hollywood co-hosting gig in April 2015.

Tommy Bahama Using 37.5 Technology for New Product Offering

Tommy Bahama is introducing a new category of product for Father’s Day and has turned to Cocona 37.5 Technology to power it.
The technology uses active particles to capture and release moisture vapor to maintain optimum temperature and relative humidity in the body. This results in better maintaining an ideal core temperature while increasing comfort and enhancing performance.
Up until now, the vast majority of the products that have used 37.5 technology have been activewear or outerwear brands. But Tommy Bahama has created a yarn that blends silk and 37.5 and will introduce it in its camp shirts.
Bradley O’Brien, executive vice president of design and product development for the Seattle-based manufacturer, said Island Zone was “largely driven by 37.5. We believe that adding technology in our iconic products is a whole new way to get someone to buy something new.”
While the concept will launch with camp shirts, Tommy Bahama will offer Island Zone polos for holiday and shorts, which will blend 37.5 yarns with cotton, for spring 2017.
“We’re building a whole lifestyle of product around it,” she said.
In addition to the 37.5 product, Tommy Bahama will also offer hybrid board shorts, rash guards and wicking polo shirts under the Island Zone tag

This Artist Is Using ‘Artivism’ To Break Down Queer Stigma And Stereotypes

A Venezuelan artist is making a bold statement about queerness and art’s power to aid in the breaking down of stereotypes related to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) identity.

The “I’m Not A Joke” campaign from Daniel Arzola is a series of images inscribed with compelling truths about human diversity that encourages individuals to live as their authentic selves. He wants the images to eventually appear on buses and subways, exposing audiences to the realites of queer experiences in an attempt to breakdown prejudice in a form of activism that he calls “Artivism.”

Much of Arzola’s work comes from personal experience as an LGBT person growing up in Venezuela. “I had an violent adolescence because of [Venezuela’s intolerance],” he told The Huffington Post. “When I was 15-years-old they tied me to an electric pole and tried to burn me alive. I was able to escape that but I spent six years not being able to draw because they destroyed all of my drawings. After escaping that I transformed everything into lines and colors instead of returning the violence – I wanted to break the cycle.”

The Huffington Post chatted this week with Arzola about “Artivism,” his artwork and what he hopes to see accomplished through the “I’m Not A Joke” series.

Using Games to Enhance Learning and Teaching: A Beginner’s Guide

Using Games to Enhance Learning and Teaching provides educators with easy and practical ways of using games to support student engagement and learning. Despite growing interest in digital game-based learning and teaching, until now most teachers have lacked the resources or technical knowledge to create games that meet their needs. The only realistic option for many has been to use existing games which too often are out of step with curriculum goals, difficult to integrate, and require high-end technology. Using Games to Enhance Learning and Teaching offers a comprehensive solution, presenting five principles for games that can be embedded into traditional or online learning environments to enhance student engagement and interactivity. Extensive case studies explore specific academic perspectives, and featured insights from professional game designers show how educational games can be designed using readily accessible, low-end technologies, providing an explicit link between theory and practice. Practical in nature, the book has a sound theoretical base that draws from a range of international literature and research.

How to Clear Obstacles Using a Powerful Meditation Object

2015-08-19-1439950222-168534-buddhameditatingwisdom570.jpg

Many people resist getting to their meditation cushion. When I ask why, the occasional person will confess something that most of us feel deep inside: “I don’t want to face my own mind.”

Much of my first year in a three-year meditation retreat was spent clearing obstacles that blocked my mind from reaching meditative stillness. As tough as it was, I found great benefit in facing my personal failures and shortcomings so that my heart and mind could finally be at peace.

At times, meditation felt like cleaning out a garage. First, you move out the big stuff you know is there and then you discover things you’re still holding on to from over a decade ago — maybe even from high school.

Because agitation is a major obstacle you face when you first start to meditate, clearing mental obstacles is among the very first things you have to do.

I’ve found there are no short-cuts to spiritual progress. It’s better to deal with your stuff first. You can bury it, you can suppress it, you can pretend it isn’t there, but when you’re free of obstacles everything proceeds easier.

So when spiritual masters work with people, getting them to stop and let go of the things that are hurting them is often the very first thing done. This helps to settle the mind so it can stay on your meditation object.

We all have stuff that we are holding on to — baggage that is weighing us down — things that we have to let go of. We all know we have habits that are no good for us, that agitate our mind, and hold us back from becoming who we want to be.

But sometimes it’s not so clear what it is precisely. And even if we know, we don’t have a mechanism for dealing with it and letting it go.

So that’s what you’re going to gain today: the first of the three most powerful meditation techniques (I know I promised these for you in an earlier blog article). This is a problem-solving meditative technique to clearly identify your obstacles and let them go. You can call this process: Compare and Dare to Let Go.

Step 1: Invite your image of an enlightened being into your meditation and think about their good qualities.

Notice I said your image of an enlightened being. It can be Jesus. It can be the Buddha. You can also imagine what your enlightened self will be like in the future and have a conversation with them. Choose whatever enlightened image resonates with you. But don’t settle for an ordinary image, because the purification will be too slow.

Your mind is like silly putty. Whatever you expose it to it becomes. If you bring an extraordinary image to your mind, you will get extraordinary results. The great 9th century scholar-saint Dharmamitra, in his Clear Words Commentary, noted this principle: “Meditating is making the mind take on the state or condition of the object of meditation.” Simply, meditate on what you want to become.

Step 2: Compare your mind to the enlightened image you’ve invited into your meditation and ask, “What do I have to give up to be more like you?” This brings your obstacles to your attention.

Perhaps now the benefit of inviting an enlightened being into your meditation is even clearer. You gain a rare chance to see who you’ll be without all your blockers. See that it will be better.

It takes courage to let go of some of your stories, because you’re not sure who you will be without them. Having a goal in sight of the kind of being you want to become greatly speeds the process.

Amazing things happen in meditation when you’re willing to listen. Ask the question again, “What do I have to give up to gain more peace?”

Just listen. The answers will come.

Step 3: Once you have identified your obstacle, prepare to destroy the thing that is holding you back and causing you and others suffering. Decide to let it go. So you can be available to be the person you want to be.

Put your obstacle in a box and label it clearly. Recognize that your enlightened being wants you to be free of this obstacle so you can be of more benefit to more people. As you prepare to give it to them to destroy, remember once you give it away, it’s no longer yours. Don’t try to take it back.

When you give your obstacle away see it destroyed in a flash of white light.

Step 4: Enjoy feeling clear of your obstacle. With no obstacles in your way, bring your enlightened being into your heart. Radiate golden or white light throughout your entire body and mind. Send that goodness out into the world.

Letting go brings further peace and clarity to our lives. Experience will show you that purifying your mind of obstacles and growing in goodness are the two keys for reaching meditative stillness.

A complete guided meditation of How to Clear Obstacles is available for free at my non-profit website GoBeyond.org. A more detailed step-by-step outline of the meditation, authentic scriptural sources for this meditation, and teaching videos are also available for free too. Enjoy.

Using a Pre-Nup to Improve Your Chances of Marriage Success

In my years of practice as a matrimonial lawyer, I have twice been called upon to review proposed pre-nuptial agreements prepared by the lawyer for the potential groom. In one case the groom’s father, having gone through a “disastrous” divorce, insisted on a pre-nup as a way of protecting the large and prosperous family business. In the other it was the groom himself, a new doctor bent on insuring that his chosen mate wouldn’t get any of the upside of his medical school investment. In both cases the potential brides were staggeringly beautiful, and saw the impending marriage as a-once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Both showed up in my office just weeks before the wedding, pre-nup in hand, wanting me to “look it over.”

The two documents prepared by attorneys in different states, were remarkably similar. They provided, clearly and unambiguously, that under no circumstance would the wife ever leave the husband, or be left by the husband, with anything other than what she came with or was gifted with during the marriage: not money, or property, or even custody of children. These terms applied regardless of circumstance, (“Honey, I found someone I like better, so pack your things.”). They applied regardless of the length of the marriage, e.g., there were no sunset provisions and no step-downs or fade-outs. I’m not a judge, so I can’t say whether either was enforceable in Court, but getting the input of an attorney increased the chances it would be upheld. There would never be an economic partnership in these marriages. When “the best years” of these women’s lives were gone; chances were good, they would be, too. The terms were “take it, or leave it.” My advice, in writing, was RUN, while you have the chance. Neither took it.

I don’t have a postscript. Neither has come to me for representation in a divorce…so far. I’m sharing this story because pre and post-nuptial contracts are becoming increasingly popular, not because more people have family fortunes, or the prospect of million dollar a year plus incomes to protect, but rather because increasingly, couples want to avoid the economic, social, and emotional ravages of divorce.

Unavoidably, legislatures and judges don’t know your circumstances. They make and apply rules that, at best, are geared to some theoretical standard of fairness. So instead, couples are using their constitutionally protected right to contract to make their own rules — about how they will treat each other in divorce, agreeing to avoid lawyers and the courts, and committing to protect their children. However, the great majority of these pre-nups don’t take full advantage of the opportunities available, and are limited, largely, if not solely, to economics, and apply only if there is an end to the marriage.

Couples are not limited to agreements about the terms of their divorce. They have the opportunity to make agreements about how their marriage will work, how important decisions will be made, and the terms of their marital partnership. Once these agreements are made they can, and should, be reviewed and updated as circumstances change and evolve. Even though these broader marriage agreements are new, couples don’t need to do this important work alone. There are collaboratively trained professionals across the United States and Canada, and beyond, who are prepared to assist couples in making plans and building strong, functional partnerships in a process called Collaborative Marriage Planning.

The process of generating a plan for the marriage (as opposed to just planning for the wedding) stimulates valuable early communication about each person’s essential needs, interests and concerns. Like a traditional pre-nup, a collaborative marriage partnership agreement can enable couples to avoid court in the event of divorce. In addition, by stimulating communication about what each person needs and expects from the marriage partnership early in the relationship, the collaborative marriage planning process can improve the chances of having a successful, durable and satisfying marriage partnership.

Further information about the process of collaborative marriage planning; its benefits, and how to get started, is available on the web.

Going Head-to-Head With Your Inner Enemy: Using ‘The Tools’ to Unlock Your Full Potential

2015-07-01-1435779923-4689171-stutz_p_michels_b_web_0.jpg

Therapists Barry Michels and Phil Stutz are creators of “the Tools,” a set of practices to help you move past self-limiting behaviors and transform challenges into opportunities. Here’s how the Tools can help with that part of you–often referred to as the saboteur, the shadow, or your inner enemy–that Michels and Stutz call Part X.

Omega: You describe how people can use the Tools to do battle with Part X, also known as their inner enemy. Does there come a time in using the Tools where it feels less like a battle and more peaceful?

Phil: I have a saying that peace is an active state of mind. We’re trying to combine the sense of peace with the necessity for constant work. Peace was often defined as something languid and laid back, a state where you can fold your tent up, stop making an effort, and stop being vigilant. That’s not what peace is.

The only infinite thing about a human being is their ability to keep on struggling with no end point. If you’re willing to do that, you’ve tapped into an infinite part of yourself that can then connect to the infinite forces in the universe, and that is peace. As far as I’m concerned that’s the only peace. That’s why I say peace is an active state of mind.

Barry: I like to illustrate this with a triangle. The lower part of the triangle is an eternal battle between you and this inner saboteur. If you engage in the struggle and keep fighting it, what happens is the top of the triangle emerges and at the top of the triangle is your higher self. It’s a part of you that transcends the lower level and can view the struggle from a higher perspective and be at peace with it. These two levels happen simultaneously, the struggle and feeling integrated and completely at peace.

Omega: How can you be sure Part X hasn’t taken over the Tools and is using them for its own end, like posing as your Inner Authority?

Barry: Part X doesn’t want you to use tools at all. Its first strategy is to get you to forget them entirely. In my case, I was always amazed at how I could work all day with patients, exhorting them to use the tools, and then somehow “forget” to use them when I went home at night.

Once you come up with ways to remind yourself to use the tools, Part X still discourages you from using them. When you use them and you get a good outcome, it suggests you no longer need them. When you experience a failure or setback, it tells you they didn’t “work,” so there’s no point in using them.

If all else fails, it likes to pose as a powerful inner authority who knows you better than you know yourself. If you study it carefully, you’ll notice it uses a harsh, finger-pointing, punitive, judgmental tone. When we work with people, we try to shift that tone to one that is supportive of every effort you make — whether you succeed or fail.

Phil: If the voice inside you is telling you to quit, it’s almost definitely Part X. It’s either going to tell you that you don’t need to do it anymore, that you’ve got this solved, or you don’t have to make anymore effort because you or the situation is hopeless and helpless, so why bother.

Omega: Is it easy to learn how to use the Tools if you’re not used to being self-reflective or self-aware?

Phil: I try to focus on what someone wants to change and just bang on that over and over again. I try to give as little theory as I can and instead give them tasks that include what I like to call student study — I ask them to study themselves. I also get people to draw pictures. When I ask people to draw a picture of Part X, no one has ever said, “What the hell is that?”

Omega: What’s the biggest thing to watch out for with Part X?

Phil: There seem to be three basic rules in the universe: part of life is pain; part of life is uncertainty; and part of life is endless work. And none of these ever go away. What we see in almost everyone is the idea of a realm of illusion where you will be exonerated, or exempt from these three rules of the universe. I call this the “snapshot realm,” because we have a picture of this perfect place in our mind, but this place doesn’t exist. Part X wants you to believe that this illusory realm is real, and once it does it can pretty much have its way with you because it’s making you a false promise.

Barry: An example of the realm of illusion might be romantic relationships. Most young people go into romantic relationships expecting to walk hand-in-hand into the sunset with the music swelling. People expect this moment to last forever. But that’s Part X’s demonic way of inflating someone’s expectations to a point where they will inevitably be crushed. It’s like commercials for exercise equipment that tell you you’re going to lose weight just by buying a treadmill but don’t mention that you’re going to have to get yourself to use the treadmill. The Tools will get you to use the treadmill.

Troopers Catch Driver Using ‘Most Interesting Man’ Pic In Carpool Lane

Washington State Police have issued what may be the “most interesting traffic citation” ever.

On Monday, a motorcycle trooper near Fife, Washington, pulled over a driver who was attempting to use the carpool lane by sticking a cardboard cutout in the passenger seat.

It wasn’t just any face, it was that of Jonathan Goldsmith, the actor who plays “The Most Interesting Man in the World” in Dos Equis ads, KOMO TV reports.

That’s when things got “interesting,” according to Washington State Patrol spokesman Guy Gill.

“[The driver] couldn’t have used a more recognizable face,” Gill told ABC News. “The trooper and the driver had a good laugh about it but he was cited anyway… Our trooper give him a $ 124 ticket for violating [High Occupancy Vehicle] lane laws.”

The driver, who has not been identified by name, did make a half-hearted attempt to go through with the ruse, telling the officer, “He’s my best friend. He just sits here and doesn’t talk,” Gill told the New York Daily News.

The Washington State Patrol immortalized the incident with this tweet:

How One Designer Is Using ‘Role Models Not Runway Models’ To Empower Women

While New York Fashion Week featured many famous faces during its opening night on Feb. 12, it was the lesser-known ones that may have made the biggest impact.

Designer Carrie Hammer’s runway show “Role Models Not Runway Models” was a highlight of NYFW for the second year in a row. “Role Models Not Runway Models” featured female CEOs, writers, actresses and entrepreneurs.

“I think it’s important that women understand that beauty comes from power, personality, and accomplishments,” Hammer said. “The women we put on the runway are all at the top of their respective fields.”

Hammer walks the runway during the Role Models Not Runway Models show.

The models included Brandthropologie CEO Billee Howard, Nexus founder Rachel Cohen Gerrol, senior editor of Bustle.com Marie Ospina and Director of Public Affairs at Coca-Cola Missy Owens.

In 2014, Hammer’s show featured the first model in a wheelchair in NYFW and this year she included “American Horror Story” actress Jamie Brewer, the first model with Down syndrome to walk the runway.

“I think this challenges what we’ve been seeing for way too long. Uniformity. It’s time to see not just diversity — but reality,” Hammer said.

5 Pointz Landlord Says He Won’t Back Down On Using The Graffiti Mecca’s Name

The unlikely New York City landmark known as 5Pointz has been at the center of controversy ever since landlord Jerry Wolkoff whitewashed the complex’s walls last fall, destroying layers of graffiti art painted there with his permission. Now Wolkoff tells HuffPost he plans to use the name “5Pointz” for the two new condos going up in place of the former graffiti “temple.”

“I’m trying to get the name registered,” Wolkoff told HuffPost in a phone interview Friday. Earlier this week, a report surfaced of a bid Wolkoff submitted in March to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, which was denied due to a preexisting real estate development in California with a similar name. In the call to HuffPost, Wolkoff clarified that he plans to challenge the denial.

5ptz

5 Pointz, before and after Wolkoff’s whitewashing.

The move makes one more bullet point in a list of grievances for the key artists and activists associated with 5Pointz, for whom Wolkoff became an enemy after his dramatic overnight whitewashing. One, Marie Cecile Flageul, acted as the group’s press liaison when plans were underway to sway the city to preserve the graffiti-smothered building. Speaking to a reporter this week, Flageul accused Wolkoff of trying to “bank off our name.” She called the name-grab “ironic,” asserting that “the same corporation which single-handedly destroyed all the artwork known as 5Pointz” is “trying to capitalize” on its cache.

Speaking to HuffPost, Wolkoff insisted that the name is his to use. He contested an earlier New York Times report that seems to attribute the moniker “5Pointz” to Jason “Meres One” Cohen, a street artist who acted as the lead “curator” for the site in its heyday.

Wolkoff says he collaborated with Cohen on the name, which is meant to signify a meeting point of the city’s five boroughs. “We were talking, and we decided to use this thing of 5Pointz,” Wolkoff said.

He is also adamant that the name should be his to reuse in the context of the two condo buildings set to rise. Bringing up New York’s Museum of Natural History, he hypothesized that “if they took that down and put up another building with more or less the same stuff inside, you’d still call it the Museum of Natural History.”

The new condos will by no means duplicate the function of 5Pointz, a decrepit building that for much of its later life did not meet city codes. For years, the building was legendary for its studios — cheaper than any for miles. When a staircase collapsed in 2009, the primary allure of the complex was its external facade, which artists of all ages tagged with spray paint.

Wolkoff says the upcoming $ 400 million luxury development will channel the ethos of the old 5Pointz, calling the property’s second incarnation “the same” as its first. He plans to designate a tagging wall and studios inside the building, both features of which have been preemptively derided by artists as pale echoes of their soulful originals. Critics “don’t believe that I’m going to bring them back,” Wolkoff said, referencing the artists who once flocked to his property. “But they will be back.”

Interview With Demi Lovato: Using Her Tour and Platform to Empower Others

2014-10-07-demiafricams.jpg

Many popular young stars resist or rebel against the role model label. Not platinum-selling recording artist Demi Lovato, who has not only embraced it, but has taken it to a whole new level. In addition to candidly sharing her own personal story of overcoming obstacles when she does interviews and during her performances, she has also created her own pioneering campaigns that shine an impactful spotlight on causes that are dear to her heart, which she has incorporated into her current Demi World Tour.

Her latest campaign was sparked on her 21st birthday. When Lovato turned 21, she decided to do something transformative for herself and others by going on a volunteer trip to East Africa with Me to We, “an innovative social enterprise that transforms people into world-changers, one action and experience at a time.” On the trip, Lovato helped build an X-ray clinic and hauled water for the women living in the drought-stricken rural community. She also joined in a traditional beading circle with Me to We Artisans Maasai Mamas. Meeting the Maasai Mamas moved Lovato to create the Limited Edition Demi Lovato Rafiki Friend Chain. This special edition piece will be sold at all of her tour stops for $ 15 with 100 percent of the proceeds going toward Lovato’s goal to fund the building of a Women’s Empowerment Center in Kenya. The center will offer skill training workshops aligned to local culture and traditions, provide access to computer labs and offer a space to accommodate local artisans who are participating in the Me to We Artisans program, giving women the autonomy and capacity to create strong economic futures for themselves and their families.

As an additional feature to empower audiences on her world tour, Lovato has added renowned Me to We motivational speaker Spencer West, who lost both his legs at a young age and garnered international media attention in 2012 when he reached the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro. West, whom Lovato had befriended on her Africa trip, shares his courageous story and inspires Lovato’s fans to overcome obstacles and redefine what’s possible.

Lovato has also been stepping up as an outspoken advocate for mental health issues, specifically bipolar disorder, with which she was diagnosed and has talked openly about. She recently announced her involvement with The Mental Health Listening & Engagement Tour at which she will connect with some of the nation’s leading experts and advocates over a series of discussions to speak about her own life experiences, encouraging and inspiring others with her own journey. Lovato had released a PSA video when she announced the tour, in which she explains, “Bipolar depression really got my life off track, but today I’m proud to say I am living proof that someone can live, love, and be well with bipolar disorder when they get the education, support and treatment they need.”

Lovato also uses her writing as a tool to inspire others. Her #1 New York Times-bestselling book book, Staying Strong: 365 Days A Year was a compilation of advice, quotes and affirmations that helped guide her personally along her journey. Her follow-up to this book, which comes out today, is Staying Strong: A Journal, a writing journal for readers to capture and reflect on how they are feeling, which features new quotes chosen by Demi throughout to help inspire and motivate expression: “happiness, sadness and everything in between.” Says Lovato, “To stay strong every day it’s important to express yourself.”

I talked with the multi-talented Lovato about all her various projects and why she feels so passionately called to use her platform to help and inspire others.

Tell us about your trip to Kenya with Me to We for your 21st birthday. Why did you decide to spend that milestone birthday that way and how did that trip impact you?

My 21st birthday was a big milestone for me, but not in the way that our society has conformed to. For my birthday, I wanted to spend my time doing something meaningful and empowering by giving back. It was such an incredible and exciting experience that I will never forget.

What was the original inspiration behind your decision to help fund the building of the Women’s Empowerment Center? What are you hoping to achieve, and what is the vision for the Center?

I have always found it really important to educate and empower other women. The goal with the Women’s Empowerment Center is to provide new opportunities to women I’ve found to be so inspiring where they will be able to get training and resources they need to create a better future for themselves and their families.

Tell us about the Maasai Mamas. What was your experience like getting to know and working with those women?

The Maasai Mamas are amazing! They are incredibly hard-working women who are truly inspirational. The whole experience of meeting them and getting to know them was truly rewarding because they pursue their dreams while still supporting their families and taking care of their households. It was an honor to work alongside them in their beading circle and learn about their lives.

What lessons do you think can be derived by traveling the world getting to know people of different cultures?

Traveling and getting to know others can really help you learn about different cultures and also establishes amazing connections between people who would have never met under other circumstances. For me, getting to work so closely with the people in this culture helped me grow as a person and was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

Tell us about the Rafiki Friend Chains and the other ways people can support the Women’s Empowerment Center and generally get involved?

I got to work with the Maasai Mamas in their beading circle, where they hand-make “friend chains.” The chains are strings of glass beads that you can wear as bracelets, necklaces, or however you want. All of the proceeds for the Rafiki Friend Chains will go to building the Women’s Empowerment Center. You can buy them at any of my shows on my World Tour, or online.

My daughters are huge fans of yours–they just saw your show in Albany and said it was fantastic. What are you most excited about with this tour? And how do you see your evolution as an artist and performer?

Whenever I’m on tour, I’m always excited about connecting with my fans! I want to make each show a fun, personal and inspirational experience! Over the years, I’ve grown so much personally and professionally. That transition has definitely been reflected in my music and as an artist.

You include Spencer West as a speaker on this tour. What resonated with you about his story and why did you decide to have him join you? What do you hope your audience comes away with from hearing him speak?

Spencer’s story is really moving. When I saw him speak at We Day, I saw how he was so inspiring to the audience. I hope that my audience will take away how he overcame his challenges to achieve his dreams.

I also saw your recent announcement and PSA about your Mental Health Listening and Engagement Tour. What can you tell us about that initiative and how that developed?

The initiative is working to help people find their strength and get the help they need. You can learn to live well with mental illness by finding the right treatment plan, and I want people to know that it’s okay to seek help.

I love your book “Staying Strong”. Do you have a favorite quote or philosophy that you live by?

I think that’s it – stay strong! There are so many inspirational quotes that I live by, but what also helps me get by every day is writing down my thoughts, experiences and feelings – which is why I have a follow up Journal (Staying Strong: A Journal) to coincide with my book, Staying Strong: 365 Days A Year.

Oftentimes people think that helping others is something that has no personal rewards for oneself. What do you get out of giving back?

I am grateful that I’ve been given the platform to help others by sharing my story and love to meet my Lovatics and hear their encouraging stories as well. For me, nothing is more rewarding than helping others.

We make these judgment calls in our relationships too, but we sometimes forget that they are personal, subjective evaluations, and instead hold our views as being objectively , undeniably true. Taking a position in this way is a form of judgmentalism and can be hazardous to your health and to the health of your relationship. Being judgmental in a relationship can be disastrous because once we attach ourselves to a fixed characterization of someone, it becomes very difficult to see them differently. Attachment to a judgment prevents us from accepting any new information that may conflict with our views, leaving us unable to update assessments that may no longer be accurate or correct. Our friend Paul discovered that there are other hazards in being judgmental in relationships.

Paul had been self-centered, insensitive, and controlling in his relationship with his wife, Cookie. When Cookie announced that she could no longer tolerate his disrespectful attitude and behavior, he apologized, promising to mend his ways and demonstrate that he was committed to being the loving husband that he had promised to be in his wedding vows. His New Year’s resolution was to become an ideal life partner and to focus unconditionally on doing what he believed would make Cookie most happy. He also immersed himself in self-help books and CD’s. He brought Cookie flowers; and he stopped watching TV after work. He expressed interest in her life, in how she spent her days, and he stopped expecting her to wait on him. He shut off the TV and listened to her when she wanted to speak with him. He was attentive to their granddaughter when she came to visit. But no matter what he did, Cookie continued to view him through the lenses of her old, familiar perspective. It was as if she had taken a snap shot of Paul years ago, and put it in the photo album.

She couldn’t turn the page; she still had it open to the same old picture, which was the only one that she could see. Convinced that the other shoe was going to drop at any moment, Cookie laid in wait for evidence that Paul was untrustworthy and that he had shadowy motives behind his “changes.”. Since no one is perfect, Cookie easily managed to collect “evidence” that Paul was guilty of deceit and deception. She held a zero tolerance policy and she was unwilling to forgive Paul or to give him the benefit of the doubt when he slipped, even briefly into old patterns. Cookie was convinced that Paul’s past transgressions had disqualified him from any second chances. She claimed that her motto was “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.”

Despite his resolution, eventually Paul began to feel like there wasn’t any point in continuing to make the effort since he felt that in Cookie’s mind he was guilty until proven innocent and her attachment to seeing him that way made the possibility of seeing his innocence remote at best. In time, it became apparent to Paul that he had no control over how Cookie viewed him. Cookie’s attachment to her judgments prevented her from appreciating the changes Paul was making. Reestablishing trust after it’s been broken takes time, and while Paul had certainly given Cookie reason to mistrust him, Cookie had played a part in the deterioration of their marriage as well. Her relentless focus on Paul’s part in the breakdown however, made it impossible for her to recognize the part that she had played, and consequently prevented her from seeing what she might do that could support Paul’s intention to repair their relationship.

When Paul eventually told Cookie that he was no longer willing to keep trying to prove his love, Cookie took this as more “proof” that he didn’t really care and had been pretending all along. Shortly thereafter, Paul made the judgment call that he was unable to persuade Cookie to see him as being sincere in his love for her. Cookie’s judgments protected her from the pain of disappointment by keeping her expectations of Paul to a minimum. Ultimately however, her attachment to them prevented them both from experiencing a satisfying and fulfilling connection together.

Cookie was not the only one in the marriage who was guilty of being judgmental. Paul had previously judged her as someone who was unworthy of receiving the kind of attention and respect that she had for years asked him to give her. He had also judged her to be in too much need of his support, particularly financial support to challenge his authority and risk jeopardizing their marriage. His attachment to these judgments prevented him from seeing that Cookie had reached a point in which she was not longer willing to remain in a relationship in which she felt disrespected and unappreciated.

Unfortunately his realizations of these changes came about too late to repair their marriage. As of our last contact with them, Paul had remarried and claimed to have learned his lesson. Cookie was single with no intention of marrying again.” I’m not bitter,” she told us. “Just clearer than I’ve ever been that I don’t need to be married to survive or even to be happy. I’m doing fine, thank you.” Still, you have to wonder.

Petroleum jelly moisturizes and hydrates, while leaving lips with the perfect natural-looking shine! Plus, spring is approaching (hopefully sooner than later, fingers crossed!) and nothing rains on a parade more than putting on your favorite sandals only to find crackly, dry heels! Petroleum jelly has been my BEST FRIEND in situations like these – nothing has worked better! Apply a generous amount to your hands/feet at night and cover them up with socks or gloves. Skip the crunchy brow gel and tame unruliness with a dab of petroleum jelly instead! Lightly coat a spoolie in the jelly and comb brows in place.

Helping Your Shy and Socially Anxious Client: A Social Fitness Training Protocol Using CBT

Helping Your Shy and Socially Anxious Client: A Social Fitness Training Protocol Using CBT

“Helping Your Shy And Socially Anxious Client” presents a breakthrough therapeutic approach to treating social anxiety. In a world dominated by extroverts, being shy or socially anxious can make life especially challenging. And while there is nothing wrong with being naturally introverted, avoiding social contact due to extreme fear and anxiety can be very damaging both mentally and physically. As a therapist, you understand that avoidance can often make a client’s anxiety worse. But many clients with shyness and social anxiety believe they can never change. In fact, they may strategically adjust their lives to avoid social activities or situations that make them uncomfortable. In a sense, they allow their social “muscles” to atrophy, and in the end may become even more alienated and despondent. There is hope. Just as physical fitness strengthens the body, “social fitness” can be developed through habit and action. In “Helping Your Shy and Socially Anxious Client, ” shyness expert Lynne Henderson presents the Social Fitness program–a twelve session cognitive behavioral model for clients with shyness and social anxiety. Inside, mental health professionals will learn powerful tools for helping clients strengthen their social skills, track their successes, and learn to cope with setbacks or hurdles. The techniques described in this manual were developed for the Stanford Shyness Clinic by Philip Zimbardo, and are currently being used by the Shyness Institute in Berkeley to educate therapists and other counselors. Pilates on the Ball: The World’s Most Popular Workout Using the Exercise Ball

Pilates on the Ball: The World’s Most Popular Workout Using the Exercise Ball

A unique and exciting synthesis of two highly acclaimed fitness techniques: Pilates Method and the Swiss exercise ball. – Non-impact Pilates exercises on the ball can be adapted for all levels of ability, from fitness trainers and weekend athletes to those healing from injury or chronic back pain. – Shows how to practice Pilates techniques without expensive equipment. – Profusely illustrated with black-and-white photographs for maximal learning. The Pilates Method of body conditioning is a highly effective workout technique that strengthens the body while engaging the mind. Developed in the early twentieth century by accomplished boxer and gymnast Joseph Pilates, the Pilates Method aligns the body; builds long, lean muscles; and develops core abdominal strength. Many lifestyle and fitness magazines have named Pilates the hottest workout of the decade. In a first-of-its-kind fusion, "Pilates on the Ball" merges the principles and exercises of the highly effective Pilates Method of body conditioning with the unique functions of the exercise ball, used by Olympic coaches, dancers, and athletes to fine-tune body awareness and enhance physical performance. The ball magnifies the benefits of the carefully developed and refined Pilates Method. Because maintaining balance on the ball recruits the deep, stabilizing muscles of the spine, the postural muscles are strengthened. The ball intensifies athletic performance by increasing resistance and heightening awareness of how the body moves in space. Chapters detail the Pilates principles step by step, with successive movements to challenge all levels of ability and "watch points" for careful evaluation of your form. Intense enough to engage seasoned athletes yet accessible enough to use as an everyday exercise routine or to alleviate chronic pain, "Pilates on the Ball" builds strong bodies and engaged minds.
