Ring footage might not be very useful for catching criminals

Ring footage might not be very useful for catching criminalsRing has said that camera footage sent to police can help reduce burglaries and catch criminals, but how effective is it, really? It might not be as helpful as you might think. NBC News has conducted an investigation suggesting that Ring's video doorbells and security cameras haven't been of much use to at least some police forces. Of the 40 law enforcement agencies the news outlet reached, just 13 said they'd made arrests after reviewing Ring footage, while two offered rough estimates. The remainder either made zero arrests (13 agencies) or didn't know how effective Ring had been despite partnerships that had lasted more than a year.

The Very Warm Relaunches With Laurence Chandler and Nate Brown

The Very Warm, the outerwear brand from David Peyser Sportswear, has launched exclusively at Ssense its first collection under the direction of Laurence Chandler of Rochambeau and Studio Institute founder Nate Brown.
Chandler, who has been named creative director of the brand, had been talking to the company about his Rochambeau brand. “The initial conversation was for new production resources,” he said.
Cousins Shai and David Peyser, whose family produces the Weatherproof collection, were interested in Rochambeau’s artist collaborations, having partnered with artists themselves on the launch of The Very Warm and special projects for the brand, and Chandler was interested in the company’s logistical expertise. Eventually they agreed to share resources — David Peyser Sportswear would handle Rochambeau’s “production, logistics, shipping, all of the things a small brand doesn’t have the bandwidth for,” said Chandler, and in turn, he would design for The Very Warm.
“The relationship is purely the exchange of resources. Right now, we’re delivering on the creative side, building The Very Warm, and they’re helping structurally for Rochambeau. And we kept it as simple as that,” Chandler said.
Founded in 2017, The Very Warm started as a project from Shai and David Peyser to enter the contemporary outerwear market. The

This Devastating Proposal Fail Has A Very Happy Ending

Matthew Picca was about to propose to girlfriend Kayla Harrity on dock in Southport, North Carolina on Saturday evening when the unthinkable happened: he dropped the ring into the ocean.

The couple of six years was vacationing with Kayla’s family when he popped the question at a waterfront bar called Old America Fish Co.

“I turned around and he was getting down on one knee,” Kayla told WECT News. “As he opened the ring box, the ring fell out of the box and fell through the cracks on the deck and into the water. I didn’t even get to see it before it dropped.”

“I was in total shock,” she told The Huffington Post. “I knew he had a great plan for the proposal and when the ring fell I was devastated. I knew we had to find the ring.”

Right away, family and a group of onlookers banded together to recover the ring. Some jumped in the water in their clothes, other locals helped by bringing flashlights and goggles.

An hour and a half later, a man named Kyle Blusher found the ring.

“We were ecstatic,” Kayla told HuffPost. “We couldn’t have been happier!”

Everyone began cheering, and Matthew got down on bended knee for the second time that day — this time with the ring firmly in hand.

“It was the best feeling in the world,” she told WECT. “My fiancé, soaking wet, smelling like salty, fishing water, proceeded to get down on one knee and put the beautiful ring on my finger!”

Documentary Film: A Very Short Introduction

Documentary Film: A Very Short Introduction

Documentary film can encompass anything from Robert Flaherty’s pioneering ethnography Nanook of the North to Michael Moore’s anti-Iraq War polemic Fahrenheit 9/11, from Dziga Vertov’s artful Soviet propaganda piece Man with a Movie Camera to Luc Jacquet’s heart-tugging wildlife epic March ofthe Penguins. In this concise, crisply written guide, Patricia Aufderheide takes readers along the diverse paths of documentary history and charts the lively, often fierce debates among filmmakers and scholars about the best ways to represent reality and to tell the truths worth telling. Beginning with an overview of the central issues of documentary filmmaking-its definitions and purposes, its forms and founders-Aufderheide focuses on several of its key subgenres, including public affairs films, government propaganda (particularly the works produced during World War II), historical documentaries, and nature films. Her thematic approach allows readers to enter the subject matter through the kinds of films that first attracted them to documentaries, and it permits her to make connections between eras, as well as revealing the ongoing nature of documentary’s core controversies involving objectivity, advocacy, and bias. Interwoven throughout are discussions of the ethical and practical considerations that arise with every aspect of documentary production. A particularly useful feature of the book is an appended list of “100 great documentaries” that anyone with a serious interest in the genre should see. Drawing on the author’s four decades of experience as a film scholar and critic, this book is the perfect introduction not just for teachers and students but also for all thoughtful filmgoers and for those who aspire to make documentaries themselves. About the Series: Combining authority with wit, accessibility, and style, Very Short Introductions offer an introduction to some of life’s most interesting topics. Written by experts for the newcomer, they demonstrate the finest co

Can We Please Talk About This Very Tiny Unicorn

Once upon a time, circa 1505 or 1506, the great High Renaissance painter Raphael painted a little known worked titled “Portrait of a Lady with a Unicorn.” As you can see, said painting does indeed feature one lady and one unicorn.

Except the title sort of downplays the whole mystical horned horse aspect. Raphael’s unicorn, it should be noted hyperbolically in the headline, is a BABY unicorn that could easily be mistaken for a furry teacup puppy or a very amiable kitten. It’s tiny mouth appears to be neighing, for crying out loud! Cue immense d’awwwwww.

This blessed portrait, originally housed in the Galleria Borghese in Rome, caught our attention when a curious press release landed in our inboxes, announcing the painting’s debut appearance in the United States later this year. The exhibition, very correctly titled “Sublime Beauty,” will bring what is inarguably the world’s most adorable baby unicorn first to the Cincinnati Art Museum and then to the Legion of Honor in San Francisco, Calif. We can hear the lines forming now.

But why does one lone painting of a lady and her pet unicorn deserve the attention of the Internet? According to Dr. Esther Bell, curator in charge of European paintings at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Raphael’s “Portrait of a Lady with a Unicorn” is not only “a stunning masterpiece of the Italian High Renaissance,” it’s also a bona fide art world mystery.

The identity of the blond woman behind the unicorn, it turns out, is unknown, as is the meaning or iconography of the bite-size unicorn in her lap. Some scholars believe the painting may have been commissioned for a wedding; the unicorn could be interpreted as a symbol of chastity. For example, Alan Riding, in a 2001 article in The New York Times, speculated that ”Portrait of a Lady” originally showed a betrothed woman holding a dog, “a symbol of fidelity.” However, when the subject’s marriage was called off, Raphael may have replaced the dog with a unicorn, a nod to her virginity.

Others note the portrait’s resemblance to Leonardo da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa,” referencing minute details like the painting’s half-length format, the presence of folded hands and the distant landscape in the background. Not to mention, that stare. Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino — aka Raphael — is known in part for his association with masters like Leonardo, Michelangelo and, thank you “TMNT,” Donatello. Leo and the much younger Raphael were both creating works in Florence, Italy in the 16th century, so it wouldn’t be much of a stretch if the latter was influenced by the former’s style.

“The ‘Mona Lisa’ is the singular portrait of the High Renaissance, but we find ‘Portrait of a Lady with a Unicorn’ to be just as beautiful and compelling,” Bell told the San Francisco Gate. “We believe Raphael was familiar with da Vinci’s work, and there is definitely a stylistic tie to be made to the ‘Mona Lisa.'”

In the aforementioned press release, Bell teases that the “Sublime Beauty,” which opens on Oct. 3, will introduce new scholarship on the miniature beast and his mysterious owner. The New York Times’ recently reported that the woman in the painting, curator Linda Wolk-Simon believes, could be the daughter of Pope Alexander VI’s mistress, Giulia Farnese.

Until October, all we can do is feast upon the tiny creature’s beauty here. While some museums are paying homage to contemporary cat memes, and others are celebrating the squee-inducing kitties of art history past, members of the Cincinnati and San Francisco art communities have this to say: don’t forget about the baby unicorn.

Meet the Very Stylish Royal Family of Belgium

There’s a very well-dressed flock you might not have heard of before: Meet Princess Astrid of Belgium and the rest of her family. From daughters to new daughter-in-law (whose husband had to give up his chance at the crown in order to wed her), there’s a lot of style happening.

princess-astrid-green-sequin-gown
Princess Astrid is the younger sister of Belgium’s current ruler, King Philippe. She’s a frequent face at international events—much in the same way Queen Elizabeth dispatches relatives to attend functions on her behalf. Astrid always cuts a sleek figure while representing her people, wearing anything from classic Chanel suits to sparkly evening gowns we could see Kate Middleton choosing.

princess-maria-laura-belgium
As Astrid’s oldest daughter, Princess Maria Laura has grown into a stylish young woman. Like all of the royal family’s children, she was kept sheltered from the public eye for much of her childhood, but recent snaps, often taken at family weddings and events, show that she’s got a penchant for bright, cheerful colors. We love how a traditional sparkling tiara was replaced by a bold headband that matches her dress here.

princess-Luisa-Maria-laetitia-belgium
Meet the two youngest daughters: Princess Laetitia Maria and Luisa Maria (Astrid also has two sons, making for a total of five children). Luisa Maria is currently attending college in Montreal and typically picks trendy pieces that would look at place on any co-ed. Laetitia Maria might be a little too young to have fully developed her own style, but with two chic big sisters as examples, there’s little doubt she’ll wind up looking flawless too.

Lili-Rosboch-wedding-dress
The newest member of the clan, Elisabetta Maria Rosboch von Wolkenstein (a.k.a. Lili) married Princess Astrid’s son last summer. The bride is a reporter and lives with her royal hubby in New York City. The couple doesn’t veer much from the family’s overall low-key vibe, but the few events where Lili has been snapped show her to be a fan of timeless, elegant pieces (as evidenced by her wedding dress choice).

queen-mathilde-belgium
And, of course, there’s Astrid’s sister-in-law, Belgium’s Queen Mathilde. She’s proved to be a classic fashion plate, stepping out to official engagements in outfits that could have been plucked from any decade. Case in point: the elegant off-white dress she chose for her husband’s inauguration (finished off with calfskin gloves, another ladylike princess favorite).

Chill Bro New York Rangers Fan Is Very Chill, Bro

There are only two ways to live your life: for today or for tomorrow. And one very chill ringside New York Rangers fan decided to live for the former on Friday.

Asked on live TV how much he paid for his seats to the Game 7 matchup between his Rangers and the Tampa Bay Lightning in Madison Square Garden, he enthusiastically responded: “My man, I paid forty. Five. Hundred. Dollars.” Then he did this:

hi

Informed that people were willing to pay as much as $ 19,200 for his seat, which would have left him with a $ 14,700 profit, our chill bro hero stuttered for just a second.

“Yeah, I know…” he said, his voice trailing off for a few seconds as he presumably pictured an alternative life, one in which he was sitting not ringside in New York, but beachside in the Caribbean.

But no, he would not be deterred. He would come to his senses. He would say this: “That would have been cool, but you know what? I gotta see the Rangers win. I could have blown all that money on water. I don’t really drink alcohol, it’s cool.”

Then he reminded the world once more what he paid to see his Rangers fight for a chance to make it to the Stanley Cup Finals: “Four thousand. Five hundred dollars. Hundreds only. Benjamin Franklin is killing the game.”

hi

The Rangers lost on Friday. Their season is now over.

An Adult’s Preposterous, Laughable, No Good, Very Real Day

Have you read the amazing children’s book Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst? If not, you should. Here’s my parody of the original, from an adult’s point of view:

I went to bed with my $ 750 night guard in my mouth and now it’s lost in my room, and when I woke up this morning my kids were cranky (“Out of my room!”) and starving (“Cereal, stat!”) and we were out of milk, and by mistake I got black mascara all over my hands and then wiped them on my white, silk shirt. I could tell it was going to be a preposterous, laughable, no good, very real day.

On the subway, one guy was twitching and another was talking to himself, two people were making out in a way that should be reserved for a private place, a woman put her hairy armpit in my face and I swear I saw another woman’s pubes poking through her pants. I looked around for someone, anyone, normal, and I found him! I tried to make eye contact in a way that said, “At least we have each other” but then he started twitching and doing weird things with his mouth and something wet dripped on my head. I think I’ll move to Canyon Ranch.

During a break at work, I checked in with Facebook and saw links to secondary drowning and how to recognize a stroke, stories about spouses dying, children getting electrocuted and mass shootings. I am paralyzed with fear. I can’t leave the building because I might get run over by a car on the sidewalk, but I can’t stay in the building because someone might come in and shoot all of us. My anxiety is making me anxious. I really need to go to Canyon Ranch. It was going to be a preposterous, laughable, no good, very real day.

At lunch, my colleague, Jim, got a turkey sandwich with American cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and coleslaw on a roll, with a chocolate milkshake to wash it down, and another colleague, Tom, got pizza, a large coke, and garlic knots. I had mixed greens with sprouts and a bottle of water. Can’t seem to shed the last 10 pounds of baby weight.

Just as I was settling back into work, my daughter’s school called to tell me that she had puked and that I had to pick her up immediately. It took an hour to get 40 blocks. The puke was all over her brand new shoes and jacket and when I hugged her, the smell was so bad that I threw up a little in my mouth, and then swallowed it. When I dropped my daughter off at home, I noticed that my sitter didn’t look so great. She probably has Ebola. It was a preposterous, laughable, no good, very real day.

Back at the office, my computer was down. Tech support advised me to try restarting it. Maybe I could work for tech support. While my computer was rebooting, I looked over my “to do” list (all 47 items and growing by the second). I have to fill out camp forms for the kids, go on a diet, refill prescriptions, grocery shop, find a group to join (I’m not vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free or raw foods only, so I don’t know where I fit in), get highlights, make photo albums of the kids before they leave for college, register the kids for Fall activities, order food for my son’s birthday party, call a friend, replace the light bulbs, learn to cook, start a blog, call the cable company, teach my son to read, send thank you notes and go to the gym. I took a break from the gym for 15 years. I advise against that. This is the kind of preposterous, laughable, no good, very real day that makes me want to scream, “Screw this, I’m moving to Canyon Ranch!” But who would care?

I knew it was going to be a preposterous, laughable, no good, very real day because I forgot my best friend’s birthday, even though I had reminders in my phone, in Microsoft Outlook and in my written calendar. Yeah, I still keep a written calendar, so what? My friend said she didn’t care that I forgot her birthday but now I bet she’s going to get back at me by “forgetting” my birthday, and then I won’t even have the right to be mad at her. I also pissed off this “cool” woman who I do charity work with, you know the type: she’s really loud because she has nothing intelligent or interesting to say, and you don’t really like or respect her but you have to pretend to and pretend really well or else you’ll have to stand by yourself at the all of the fundraisers. I hope she moves to Canyon Ranch.

I ran into my brother and his colleagues on the way home from work and he specifically reminded me not to ask his boss about his wife, since they’re going through a divorce. I’m usually good at remembering these kinds of things but all the guys looked exactly the same and I forgot which one was his boss and asked about his wife. After an awkward silence my brother told me not to call him anymore.

It was a preposterous, laughable, no good, very real day.

I made kale and quinoa for dinner even though I hate kale and quinoa. There was no hot water in the shower, my toothpaste was hard, my necklace fell down the drain and I’d already seen the episode of House Hunters that I was counting on to soothe me to sleep. I was out of Ambien, the AC still wasn’t turned on (it’s May!), and my sitter called in sick for tomorrow. You know, because she has Ebola.

It was a preposterous, laughable, no good, very real day.

My shrink says some days are like that. Even at Canyon Ranch.

Robert Downey Jr. Gives 7-Year-Old Boy His Very Own ‘Iron Man’ Bionic Arm

A boy who was born with a partially developed arm was recently given a special “Iron Man”-themed prosthetic limb — from none other than Tony Stark himself.

In the video above, watch the moving moment when 7-year-old Alex walks into a room to find actor Robert Downey Jr., as his “Iron Man” alter ego, waiting for him.

Downey was there to present Alex with a 3D-printed bionic arm, which was designed by Albert Manero, a doctoral student in mechanical engineering at the University of Central Florida. Manero is the senior director of Limbitless Solutions, a volunteer organization that designs open-source 3D-printed limbs and donates them to children in need.

“[I] had the absolute privilege of presenting a brand spanking new 3D-printed bionic ‘Iron Man’ arm to Alex, the most dapper 7-year-old I’ve ever met,” Downey wrote on Facebook after the heartwarming meeting, which was captured on film by Microsoft’s “The Collective Project.”

The actor went on to thank Manero and Microsoft “for their work making artificial limbs like this more affordable for families with kids who want to show the playground how badass they are.”

Proof Tabloids Represent Men And Women Very Differently

It’s common knowledge that tabloid magazines tend to objectify and sexualize women more than men. However, this double standard becomes even more apparent when you put six months of images side by side.

In the video “The Experiment,” writer Kate Hardie and lighting technician Andy Lowe cut out pictures of men and women featured in the British tabloid The Sun, the UK’s most widely read daily newspaper. Over the course of six months, Hardie and Lowe pasted all of these photos to a wall, placing images of women on one side and men on the other. The results show the stark contrast between how women are represented and how men are.

The video was created as part of the “No More Page 3” campaign, which protests the The Sun’s decades-long practice of printing topless models on its third page.

women

“The Experiment” shows that sexist representations of women go far beyond the topless photos featured on The Sun’s page three. Images of female celebrities appear to be chosen based on how little clothing they’re wearing, while the men are almost all completely clothed. And as Hardie and Lowe point out in the video, “The men are nearly all active, doing things. Not posed… the women are passive. It’s all about how they look.”

The men are pictured showing a range of emotions from ecstatic to angry, while the women are only pouting or smiling. “When I look at the men’s side, I see real life,” the text in the video reads. “But when I look at the women’s side, it doesn’t seem real. It’s all manufactured.”

Although sexist representations exist throughout the tabloid pages, “No More Page 3’s” chief objective is to implore The Sun to stop publishing topless images as a regular feature.

The campaign’s website explains why they’re protesting this section of the newspaper: “Currently, any story [The Sun runs] about women’s issues such as rape, sexual abuse, harassment, domestic violence or the dangers of online porn is drowned out and contradicted by the neon flashing sign of Page 3 that says ‘shut up, girls, and get your tits out.'”

While the owner of The Sun, Rupert Murdoch, hinted at getting rid of Page 3 in a series of tweets in September 2014, the section currently still exists.

“We love breasts! And have nothing against the women who choose to show them,” No More Page 3’s website reads. “We simply feel that a family newspaper is the wrong context for these images… all we are really asking is that women be represented with respect in the newspaper, rather like men are.”

Bradley Cooper Very Charmingly Air Guitars On ‘Jimmy Fallon’

Bradley Cooper is a multi-talented actor and producer, but when it comes to the world of music, his skills are a little more limited. The star demonstrated his one area of instrumental prowess — air guitaring — on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” on Monday night. After admitting that he memorized the guitar part for Neil Young’s version of “Down By The River” as a child solely to perform sans instrument, Cooper broke into an air guitar performance that was realistic, impressive and — most important — extremely, extremely charming.

The Very Best Royal Style Moments of 2014

Royal families have been around for a long time, but it felt like this year was more stylish than most. I kicked off 2014 knowing that Kate Middleton could be counted on to provide chic outfits, but I’m happy to report that I’m ending the year with a lot of new friends (like Queen Letizia and Princess Ameerah).

queen-letizia-white-coat-dress-swearing-in-ceremony
It was a big year for Letizia, who started off as a princess and is ending as an official queen. For the coronation ceremony, she picked this embellished white coat dress that wasn’t over-the-top but still had the sort of glamour you need to appear queenly.
kate-middleton-white-zimmermann-eyelet-dress-australia
With her tour of Australia and New Zealand, Kate might’ve had her biggest fashion tour to date. It was chock-full of fantastic dresses, but the moment that really stuck out for me was when we saw how she could do beach-casual, picking this pretty white eyelet Zimmermann dress and wedges.
queen-maxima-blue-dress-bell-sleeves-japan
This was also the year I realized I have a major style crush on Queen Maxima of the Netherlands (and I’m not alone: she was named to Vanity Fair‘s best-dressed list). She grabbed my attention during a majorly stylish week traveling, but it was this smoky jade dress that I loved most. If a similar silhouette ever passes my radar, I’m buying it. Immediately.

japanese-princesses-outfits
We were all fascinated by the throwback feeling of this photo that showed Japanese princesses Yoko, Takamado, Tsuguko, and Noriko waiting near a plane with proper hats and white gloves in hand.

royal-family-photo-kate-middleton-prince-george-sweater-prince-william
The most recent photos of Prince George are only the latest to prove that he’s pretty darn adorable. And while he’s got a fab wardrobe, the best thing I saw him in all year was his adorable George sweater (that, no surprise, caused a run on personalized baby sweaters).
princess-victoria-nobel-peace-prize-stockholm-2014
If classic royal glamour is your thing, this one’s for you: Swedish royals Princesses Madeleine and Victoria attended a Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in gorgeous gowns complete with sashes and badges. Both were divine, but I loved the striking simplicity of Victoria’s red pick.
queen-letizia-queen-mathilde
It was the littlest thing from this snap of Queens Letizia and Mathilde that left a big impression on me. Similar to Japan’s princesses, the ladies are both pulling a Grace Kelly move, wearing one glove and carrying the other beside their clutch. So ladylike.

Are you as obsessed with princesses as I am? Kate Middleton’s still your No. 1 fave—you voted her best-dressed royal.

Jerry Seinfeld’s Worst Bomb Ever Sounds Very, Very Uncomfortable

It’s easy to forget that even the most successful of comedians once had to rise their way up through the ranks.

Luckily, Jerry Seinfeld reminds us of this fact in a new web exclusive for “The Tonight Show,” in which he shares the story of his worst standup set ever. Back in 1977, when he was 22, Seinfeld scored a gig at a disco in Queens on New Year’s Eve. Let’s just say it didn’t go well, and there’s little evidence anyone at the venue even knew he was there.

“The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET on NBC.

Guy Pearce Has A Music Video And It’s Very Bizarre

You’ve seen Guy Pearce lose his memory, perform in drag and even portray Andy Warhol, but nothing compares to his new music video. The Australian actor recently released a music video, and it’s one of the most delightfully bizarre things we’ve ever seen. Pearce’s video for the song “Fly All the Way,” off his debut album “Broken Bones,” features the actor in a variety of absurd infomercials. In one, he has his own meat brand; in another, he’s a workout instructor who grows breasts. Yup, super weird. But the song itself is actually really catchy.

Pearce has apparently been writing music since his 1985 TV series “Neighbors,” which gave way to pop stars Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan and Craig McLachlan, but never had the courage to release it. In an interview, Pearce said that he didn’t feel comfortable sharing his music since any mention of it would prompt journalists to “roll their eyes.” Before he recently sang live on Australia’s Radio National, Pearce said, “I didn’t have the confidence to come forward with the music I was making.”

Finally, though, the actor has embraced his music career, and apparently his goofy side as well.

“Post Mortem Presents: A Very Victorian Christmas,” Post Mortem Movement Theatre, Long Beach CA

The party prelude hooks you. There’s a Door Girl (Danielle Kaufman), a vampy pre-Henry Higgins Eliza Doolittle. A long, dark passageway – wait, is this Halloween? Rooms (so many possibilities but, alas, locked) off to the side. You emerge from this dim lit vaguely Christmassy birth canal and – gasp! – light. Crowd noise, music, a bar – red and green potent potables for one, please. A vampire, burlesque girls, a ghost, a clown and other dignitaries of darkness and noir hold court. A Host (Beth Pennington) calls the assembly to order and, like steel filings that hurl themselves at a redheaded magnet, it begins.

“Post Mortem Presents: A Very Victorian Christmas” is a staggering (in more ways than one) achievement. It gifts you the perfect antidote for the Whitman Sampler of bah, humbug Noel platitudes.

Conceived, directed and choreographed by Andrea Luna and Angela Lopez, it’s a riot of song, a rhapsody of dance and movement. In short, it’s a scream. It recovers and re-enacts the delightfully sinister Victorian winter solstice tradition. The shortest day of the year, an abundance of darkness, and that membrane that separates the undead and us dissolves.

What better occasion, then, for a couple of horror stories. ‘Tis the season, after all.

2014-12-20-vic3.jpg

Both stories concern ghosts. Each occasion dance numbers that build drama, enhance rhythm. One is frightful and ends happy ever, ever, after. The other is funny and ends tragic. Both run the gamut of the difference between one’s joyous expectations of the holidays and their grim reality. They are spooky, articulated nicely in that patent pending Post Mortem style of rave war paint, skulking movement, woeful facial expressions and gestures that, were one inclined towards physics, could be described as Heisenberg uncertain.

One concerns the woeful tale of Grimwald (Kyle Johnston) the sad clown. The other concerns a scaredy cat Santa Claus (Jeffrey Kieviet). Both are enchanting to watch, better yet, to share, as the stage is a few feet from the audience. The drama is as psychological as it is physical though it’s the physical bits, of course, we notice first. The humor, on the other hand, is Keystone Cops physical.

2014-12-20-vic2.jpg

No spoiler alert is necessary because this production was a one timer. Grimwald, a compelling combination of Heath Ledger’s Joker and Charlie Chaplin’s Little Tramp, becomes a successful entertainer. He becomes so successful that he hires a Jester (Alexis Udo-Udoma). The Jester – boo! Hiss! – steals the act. Talk about tit for tat sectarian violence. Grimwald kills the Jester, the Jester, undead but lethal, kills Grimwald’s Lover (Andrea Luna). Because it’s Christmas, though, Grimwald’s undead lover returns and they live happy ever (ever as in vampire ever).

And then there’s Santa. Probably because he reads The Daily Mail, his annual rounds scare the bejeezus out of him. Each time he stumbles, literally and figuratively, into each house, he expects something to befall him. Not even remotely jolly, he traipses in, defenses up, and then, no threat. The anthropomorphic Christmas Tree takes it all in gleeful stride. Santa relaxes, suspects nothing’s going to happen. Then he becomes the victim of a Murphy’s Law. Santa, R.I.P.

2014-12-20-vic1.jpg

Speaking of Eliza Doolittle, you do get accustomed to the face of Post Mortem. They’re energetic and innovative. In every sense of the word, they’re original. A vampire (Ashley Allen), burlesque girls (Sayaka Miyatani and Jessica Rae), and a ghost (Luna). Song (Ellen Warkentine and Andrew Pedroza), movement, and dance. Stories that tangentially evoke Christmas and massively describe the human condition. “A Very Victorian Christmas” offers one big festive wassail. A grog or two in, you might even say it’s good for wassails you.

Stage Door: Not the Messiah (He’s a Very Naughty Boy)

2014-12-18-NottheMessiah.jpg

For Monty Python fans, Eric Idle is a wacky kind of genius.

A co-creator of Monty Python on TV and film, he also wrote the book and lyrics for the Tony-winning Spamalot, which ran nearly five years on Broadway. Inspired by his success, Idle turned to another Python favorite, The Life of Brian. Teamed with composer John Du Prez, the duo transformed it into a comic oratorio, aptly dubbed Not The Messiah (He’s a Very Naughty Boy).

Operating on all cylinders, it recently blew Carnegie Hall audiences away.

It was performed by Idle, alongside several Broadway vets: Tony-winner Victoria Clark, Marc Kudish, Lauren Worsham and artist William Ferguson, who recently joined the Metropolitan Opera. Accompanied by the wonderful Collegiate Chorale, and a team of bagpipers, they made comic magic. The Chorale, which is noted for its eclectic repertoire — traditional to obscure works — is a key addition to any musical work. So is the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, which regularly collaborates with Carnegie Hall.

First performed in 2007 in Caramoor Center for Music and Arts in Westchester, New York, a time Idle refers to as “the halcyon days of the Bush Administration,” Not The Messiah boasts irreverent humor and an amazing score. The musical numbers rely on a range of genres — pop to gospel, country to classical.

The oratorio is based on “The Book of Brian,” the story of a young Judean during Roman rule. He is the wrong man, in the wrong place, at the wrong time. Inexplicably, despite Brian Cohen’s protestations, he is mistaken for the Messiah. As history has made clear, that’s never a happy ending.

When Brian admonishes followers not to look to him, but have faith in themselves, he exclaims: “You’re all individuals!” They chorus: “We’re all individuals!” One of the best examples of mob-think ever. Throw in Python references to the dead parrot sketch, lumberjacks and hysterical songs like “We Love Sheep,” “What Have The Romans Ever Done For Us,” “Mrs. Betty Parkinson” and “The People’s Front of Judea” and the irreverence reaches its zenith.

Idle calls Not the Messiah “baroque-n-roll.” Audiences just call it terrific. If you missed the live show, take heart. It’s available on iTunes, Flixster and Netflix.

Why Interstellar Should Be Taken Seriously — Very Seriously

A few of my closest friends are physicists. In fact, when I went to see Interstellar, I made sure one of them was at my side. My physicist pal and I loved the movie, and to us (especially the physicist) the physics of the story were merely a layman’s version of the real thing, but that was the right way to do it. A third member of our viewing party, a girl whose interests could be described as more spiritual than scientific (not that the two are mutually exclusive), utterly despised it. What I couldn’t figure out, despite her attempts to explain, was why. I kept coming back to the conclusion that it was because she didn’t understand it, but the reality is that plenty of people — very intelligent people — don’t fully understand the physics behind Interstellar, but its ratings would suggest that they don’t mind the confusion.

The truth, though, is that she just wasn’t interested.

Many people just aren’t interested in space.

Too many.

NASA accounts for only 0.58 percent of our annual budget, yet the average American believes we are spending too much on space exploration and research. Compare that with the only 37 percent of Americans who believe that our $ 1.2-trillion annual defense budget is too high.

To those who have seen the movie, the condition of our planet during that film seems like a realistic preview of the disasters that climate change will bring, and spending more money on our military isn’t going to stop those disasters. In fact, a larger military is more likely to lead to the deadly wars described in the movie and add to the carbon buildup that is almost exclusively responsible for climate change. Climate change is here and will only get worse over our lifetime. Widespread natural disasters, famine, and probably wars will all soon be part of the reality of our survival on this planet unless we do something just as drastic as the Armageddon that we’ve caused.

Is NASA going to save us by taking us all to a different planet? Not likely, though colonizing other planets actually isn’t entirely outside the realm of possibility, especially with Mars and Europa literally on the horizon. But what most people don’t realize about NASA is how many incredible inventions have emerged as mere byproducts of their space-faring missions — like microwaves and duct tape.

After talking to a few people about the movie, it occurred to me that not only do many people not fully understand the physics of space travel, but they hold the physics portrayed in the movie to be closer to fantasy than to science. This is indubitably not the case. Interstellar is one of the most scientifically accurate science-fiction movies ever made. To those who doubt my authority, the producers of Interstellar hired a physicist from Cal Tech to check and double-check their physics throughout the movie.

Interstellar is not just a movie but a warning, one that should be taken very seriously. The Dust Bowl-esque apocalypse that is portrayed in the movie puts climate change in a perspective that even its diehard deniers can understand, and the social statement of portraying NASA as a secret organization under a society that believes the Moon landing was faked highlights how foolish our public opinion on space spending is. We need to fund NASA more, not less. With $ 1.2 trillion for just one year, NASA could put colonies on the Moon, Mars, and Europa in our lifetimes, and we’d get to reap the benefits of every piece of technology that is yielded as a result.

Better battery technology, solar technology, nuclear fusion, quantum-entangled communication and processing, artificial intelligence, cryogenic sleep, medical advancement, and many more breakthroughs we can’t even imagine — this is just a taste of what we could have in our lifetime if we funded NASA just a little bit more than we do today. The full $ 1.2 trillion is not even necessary. Ask most scientists and they’ll tell you that we are trapped by the paradox of our own economy. We have the intellectual and physical resources necessary to solve climate change, global hunger, and most disease and travel anywhere in the Solar System we want, but we don’t have the economic resources. The reason this is a paradox is that the economy is entirely man-made. In essence, we are needlessly restricting our own progress, but that is just the way our world works right now. So fund NASA! We are only now beginning to realize the trouble we are in when we should be desperately searching for solutions. Funding NASA will bring not only the necessary advancements that could save our planet but advancements that will improve the quality of life for everyone (again, like microwaves).

The one shining light, despite the lack of public space funding, is SpaceX. Opinions on the merits of space exploration turning into a private industry are mixed, but the social benefits are still present. The company’s founder, Elon Musk, announced that SpaceX would be designing a fleet of low-orbit satellites to bring wi-fi to the entire planet. Take that promise as a taste of the real-world benefits of funding modern space travel beyond just saving our lives. Who wouldn’t want worldwide free wifi?!

Fund NASA, invest in SpaceX, write your congressperson, and vote. Space travel isn’t just cool. It isn’t just something to do because we can. If Interstellar has anything to teach us, it’s that space travel can save our species. The truth is we might need saving very soon.

Wife Has Very Specific Instructions On How She Wants To Be Woken Up At 5 A.M.

Waking someone who is admittedly not a morning person before 7 a.m. is much like waking up a hibernating bear from his cave. At times it can be much, much worse.

That’s why one wife, who is not big on mornings, made sure to draft this handwritten contract when asking her husband to wake her up at 5 a.m. so she could get to work early before a big project.

If you read the note carefully, you will notice that after solemnly promising not to get mad at him, the wife stipulates that he may not wake her up by “grabbing my boob and shaking it.”

While that doesn’t exactly sound pleasant, it still beats an alarm clock, if you ask us.

Very Charleston

Cobblestone streets leading to perfectly preserved historic homes. Intricate wrought-iron gates opening to lush, fragrant gardens. A skyline of steeples and a river harbor bustling with schooners and sailboats. Charleston is one of America’s most charming cities. In vibrant watercolors and detailed sketches, artist Diana Gessler captures the beauty and riches that make Charleston so unique: White Point Gardens, the Spoleto Festival, Rainbow Row, Waterfront Park, Fort Moultrie, the beaches of Sullivan’s Island, sumptuous Lowcountry cuisine, and handmade sweetgrass baskets. Full of fascinating details–on everything from the art of early entertaining, the city’s inspired architectural and garden designs, and George Washington’s Southern tour to famous Charlestonians and the flags of Sumter–Very Charleston celebrates the city, the Lowcountry, the people, and our history. Hand-lettered and full color throughout, Very Charleston includes maps, an index, and a handy appendix of sites. With her cheerful illustrations and love for discovering little-known facts, Diana Gessler has created both an entertaining guide and an irresistible keepsake for visitors and Charlestonians alike.

How Stress Can Be a Very Good Thing

Feeling stress in your everyday life? Join the crowd. There’s no doubt that we face an enormous number of stresses in day-to-day living, whether it be at work, in the home, or anywhere in between. In fact, a recent poll showed that more than one in every four Americans, almost 60 million people, said they experienced a great deal of stress in the previous month alone.

The funny thing, though, is as much as we may believe that the stresses we face are more numerous or severe than in generations past, people have been living extremely stressful lives for thousands of years. Think the hunter-gatherers didn’t feel the stress of chasing down wild beasts for survival? That our counterparts from a century ago, struggling through economic depression, didn’t consider theirs to be the “Age of Anxiety”?

What you might find suprising is that contrary to popular belief, some stress can actually be a good thing.

What Is Stress, and How Can It Help Us?

Stress, when harnessed properly, can have numerous benefits for the body and mind. But in order to use stress to our advantage, it’s important first to understand what exactly causes it and, if everyone tells us to avoid it, how it can actually help us.

When we feel stress, our body is sending us a signal about how the pressures we experience affect us physically and mentally. Much like a caveman running from a wooly mammoth, stress triggers a “fight or flight” response that turns on parts of our nervous system and causes us to make certain hormones. You know the feeling — heart racing, palms sweaty, eyes wide open, heightened awareness. Ever been in a dangerous situation and all of a sudden felt like you could lift a car or outrun a chasing dog? It’s actually your body and mind responding to stress: In the end, we get a turbo boost of speed, strength, and senses that can be an incredible advantage in our everyday lives.

In fact, there actually are a few ways that stress, in moderation, can help us on an everyday basis.

1. Stress Can Sharpen Your Memory
Did you ever notice that sometimes when you are stressed, your memory seems to improve? Remember that big test you aced where the answers seemed to come out of nowhere? That’s one way your brain responds to stress, and it’s because of stress hormones that increase your alertness when it’s most needed. Occasional stress can help keep you focused and improve your recall, which can be a plus when cramming for that test or preparing for an important presentation at work. But just as with anything else, only so much stress can actually help. Too much of it over an extended period of time can make your mind foggy and give you trouble recalling even the most basic of things. Ever wonder how 9-1-1 developed for an emergency? Partly because under severe stress, research showed people could only remember three numbers. Just watch contestants on a game quiz show — they’re not acting when they seem to get a simple answer wrong — too much stress stops their brain from recalling some facts.

2. Stress Can Help Boost Your Immune System
You need a healthy immune system to help fight off infections and disease, and believe it or not, the right kind of stress can actually help your body’s defenses against illness. When you get sick, stress causes you to make hormones that battle threats to your health. And this kind of stress is particularly effective when at the early stages of an illness, when your body needs help the most. Now, it is true your immune system can only handle so much stress: If it lasts too long, these hormones can overwhelm your body and actually decrease your immunity. But that initial burst of stress is an asset when your immune system when you’re the most vulnerable: Right when your body faces a threat.

3. Stress Can Help You Get a Leg Up at Work
I know — you’re thinking, “work is what causes my stress!” Well, successful employees turn stress into positive energy and motivation rather than letting it consume them. Ever notice that you get the least amount done on days where you have the fewest deadlines? Too little stress at the workplace can lead to complacency and affect how much you actually get done. When you take risks and choose to attack hurdles at work, it helps your mental toughness and self-confidence. And these are qualities that can increase your marketability and promotion opportunities. Manage the stress and you will get an advantage over colleagues who let stress overwhelm them.

4. Stress Can Make Your Life More Interesting
To this point, we’ve described stress a survival tool, but what about the stress we feel when we actually choose to take on a challenge? Think about some stressful situations that we consciously put ourselves in to make life more interesting and enjoyable. Challenges like asking someone out on a first date, facing and conquering a known fear, interacting with people you’ve never met, even learning something completely new. These may not immediately come to mind when you think of stressors — and maybe that’s because of the positive outcomes that come from them — but they’re the types that can help you achieve fulfillment, health, and happiness.

Recognize Your Stressors and Use Them to Your Advantage

Although stress can be a true positive, don’t forget that too much of anything is rarely a good thing. It’s true that small bursts — occasional episodes for short periods of time — can provide great benefits, but it’s never a good idea to expose yourself to long-term stress, which is a setup for emotional and physical illness. Instead, recognize the stressors in your life, whether self-chosen or from outside sources, and use the energy that your body produces to your advantage.

So while we may not be the first generation to have faced this amount of stress, we may be the first with the knowledge to turn what has always been considered a negative into a true positive.

Burnout: Time to Abandon a Very Costly Collective Delusion

As I’ve been out on the road talking about Thrive, it’s been inspiring meeting people and hearing their stories about how they’re trying to navigate our culture of overwork and burnout. “I don’t remember the last time I was not tired,” one young woman told me after my conversation with Sheryl Sandberg at the San Francisco Symphony Hall. And many others — men and women, young and old — echo that same sentiment. Especially among the young ones, there is one question that has been coming up again and again, which is some variation of “hey, it’s OK for you to say ‘you don’t need to burnout’ now that you’re already successful, but what about those of us just starting out who want to succeed?”

It’s a good question — and it seems like a logical one. I say it seems logical because its premise is actually flawed in a number of ways. First, there’s the assumption that professional success and a successful life are one and the same. Defining success in that limited way is a result of using the flawed (and limited) metrics that Thrive is an attempt to get us to move beyond.

Because we are more than our jobs. Who we are at work isn’t the totality of who we are. And confusing the two will — sooner or later — lead to choices that are antithetical to thriving. Our world is full of the casualties of this confusion — hyper-successful people are depressed, addicted or suffering from stress-related diseases.

The second way the question is flawed is the dangerous assumption it makes that overwork and burnout are the only path to professional success. Even if professional success is the most important thing to you, depriving yourself of sleep, never letting yourself recharge, never disconnecting, not allowing any time for quiet reflection and for those you love — is not a sustainable career strategy. Not only are quantity of work and quality of work two very different things, at some point — more quickly than you think — they become inversely related.

But it’s amazing how deeply ingrained this myth is. When I was talking with Oprah about the book for her Super Soul Sunday program (the conversation will air on Mother’s Day), she told me how, in the early years of her Oprah show, she’d work so late that she’d get home and collapse on to her bed without even having the energy to change her clothes. Of course, you might be inclined to attribute her enormous success to that level of overwork, but as we discuss on the show, that’s clearly not the case. Oprah didn’t become Oprah because she worked so much she didn’t even have the strength at night to change out of her clothes. She became a success — both professionally and personally — because of her phenomenal talents, her deep capacity for empathy, her gift for telling stories and touching hearts, and for urging people to live their best lives. Oprah wasn’t successful because of working so late she had to sleep in her clothes (and, no doubt, many other manifestations of overwork), she was successful in spite of that.

Similarly, I’m reminded of Erin Callan, who recounted in the New York Times last year her story of rising to be the CFO of Lehman Brothers and resigning just before the entire company collapsed. She recounted how her job always came first, even at the cost of her marriage. After leaving the company, she was devastated and had trouble recovering. “I did not know how to value who I was versus what I did,” she wrote. “What I did was who I was.”

Now, having had time to reflect, she realizes she was more than her job:

Until recently, I thought my singular focus on my career was the most powerful ingredient in my success. But I am beginning to realize that I sold myself short. I was talented, intelligent and energetic. It didn’t have to be so extreme. Besides, there were diminishing returns to that kind of labor.

She concluded: “I now believe that I could have made it to a similar place with at least some better version of a personal life.”

And that’s the point: The need to get rid of the perilous belief that overwork is an essential precondition of high performance and effectiveness. Far from it.

As Bill Clinton once said, “every important mistake I’ve made in my life, I’ve made because I was too tired.” Sun Tzu’s Chinese military treaty The Art of War is one of the most popular books among CEOs and business executives. We’d all be better off if CEOs read instead The Giving Tree or Make Way for Ducklings. Empathy and collaboration are more valuable tools for career progress in our modern interconnected economy than the idea that “all war is based on deception.” As Wharton professor Adam Grant makes clear in his best-selling book Give and Take, those who give their time and effort to others end up achieving more success than those who don’t. Salespeople with the highest annual revenue are those who are the most motivated to help their customers and coworkers; the engineers with the highest productivity and fewest errors are those who do more favors for colleagues than they receive. Grant also cites research indicating that companies led by CEOs who are “takers” end up having more fluctuating, volatile returns.

And in Thrive, I quote a large number of scientific studies that confirm the profound negative effects that overwork, burnout, and sleep deprivation have on practically every part of our mental and physical health and performance. As the Harvard Medical School’s Division of Sleep Medicine explains, sleep deprivation played a critical role in the accidents at Three Mile Island and Chernobyl, the Exxon Valdez spill and the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion: “Sleep deprivation negatively impacts our mood, our ability to focus, and our ability to access higher-level cognitive functions.” And for anybody wanting professional success, higher-level cognitive functions come in pretty handy.

Writing in Forbes last week, Michael Thomsen notes the widespread adoption of the culture of extreme burnout in Silicon Valley and among tech startups, three-quarters of which are failing. “Could it be,” he asks, “that the myth of the obsessive careerist whose dedication to work follows him to bed every night is actually a grand farce of worst practices and general dysfunction?”

A grand farce of worst practices and general dysfunction indeed! That is the collective delusion we have all been laboring under at tremendous cost to our health, our relationships, our productivity, our creativity and our planet.

Good ideas are much more valuable to a successful business than exhausted employees. They are the lightning in a bottle everyone is trying to capture. And we know for a fact that nothing kills creativity, intuition and originality faster than sleep deprivation and burnout. “It may be,” writes Thomsen, “that accepting the normalcy of non-stop work is encouraging a culture of unusually bad thinking, painstakingly propped up by those charged with turning thought into real product.” He concludes by asking, “How can any work ethic connected to such dimming of cognitive function produce anything worth having?”

And while burnout dims our cognitive function, mindfulness tools like meditation increase it. In one scientific study, researchers at Leiden University found that various meditation techniques can boost both “divergent thinking,” which allows us to come up with many different ideas, and “convergent thinking,” which helps us produce one specific solution to one particular problem.

Fortunately, word is finally starting to get out. The list of CEOs coming out as meditators is getting longer each year. There’s Mark Bertolini of Aetna, Ray Dalio of Bridgewater and Marc Benioff of Salesforce to name just a few. They’re all testifying to the truth that recharging and renewing ourselves and performance at work are not exclusive, but in fact deeply and necessarily connected.

Instead of role models being held up for “working 24/7,” we should be selecting role models based on how well they work. Such a gallery would include Padmasree Warrior, the chief technology officer of Cisco, a $ 43 billion company. Warrior meditates daily and goes on regular weekend digital detoxes. In an interview last year she explained her approach:

The important thing to remember is it’s not about balance, it’s about integration… The important thing that I would like to add to the conversation is to really focus on making sure you’re integrating all four aspects — your work, your family, your community and yourself. And it’s not about trying to spend equal amounts of time every single day on each of these things, but making sure you’re paying attention to all the things that make us up as a whole human being.

We all have to find our own way. There are many different paths, but we have to start by discarding pre-Copernican calculations based on the faulty belief that overwork and constant busyness are the center of the universe.

But, to circle back, even though it’s clear that taking care of our human capital will actually help our careers, we should remember that our careers do not define us. The goal is to thrive, not advance up the corporate ladder.

I’m not saying don’t have big dreams and don’t try to excel at your job. I’m simply saying that we shouldn’t allow professional success to define us. We’re more than our to-do lists. And we don’t have to wait until we get a corner office for our lives to have value and meaning. We can thrive wherever we find ourselves right now, and being exactly who we already are.

Dada and Surrealism: A Very Short Introduction

Dada and Surrealism: A Very Short Introduction

The avant-garde movements of Dada and Surrealism continue to have a huge influence on cultural practice, especially in contemporary art, with its obsession with sexuality, fetishism, and shock tactics. In this new treatment of the subject, Hopkins focuses on the many debates surrounding these movements: the Marquis de Sade’s Surrealist deification, issues of quality (How good is Dali?), the idea of the ‘readymade’, attitudes towards the city, the impact of Freud, attitudes to women, fetishism, and primitivism. The international nature of these movements is examined, covering the cities of Zurich, New York, Berlin, Cologne, Barcelona, Paris, London, and recenlty discovered examples in Eastern Europe. Hopkins explores the huge range of media employed by both Dada and Surrealism (collage, painting, found objects, performance art, photography, film) , whilst at the same time establishing the aesthetic differences between the movements. He also examines the Dadaist obsession with the body-as-mechanism in relation to the Surrealists’ return to the fetishized/eroticized body. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

A-Sides “Aside”: A Very Awesome Holiday with Gabba Gabba, Aye?

The Suburbs is probably in my top three favorite albums of all-time. But, I’ve been floored with all of Arcade Fire’s albums. I deeply felt all of the cuts on the dark Neon Bible, and caught on early when Funeral dropped in 2004. Surprisingly, up until this fall, I had never been able to see the band live. For years, I felt this gaping hole because of it. I’m fortunate in the field I’ve chosen to see a lot of concerts, but my favorite band had alluded me for quite a long time and I had this crushing need to see them anyway, anyhow when Win and his fellow talented Canucks hit the road again. In October, I scored tickets to see them perform tracks off their latest Reflektor album at a costume party within an abandoned Brooklyn warehouse. As I stood on line with my friend Max, a designer who lent me one of his masks for the evening, my anticipation for the show was as high as Snoop Dogg at a frat party. Once the lights went off, and the Fire’s alt-egos “The Reflektors” took the stage, I was mesmerized for an hour-and-a-half. I can honestly say their performance of “Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)” that night was among the best songs I’ve ever seen live.

So why do I mention this Arcade Fire show from a few months ago? This is certainly not a “best of 2013” article. Been there, done that. I paint you this picture to tell you a different story altogether. Say what? I’ll explain. As I stated above, it’d been years that I had felt “a crushing need” to see a band live. Well, just a month after seeing Arcade Fire, it happened again. The astonishing thing about it was, unlike the Canadian indie rock band, it took just four months for me to see these guys live. If you don’t mind, I’ll paint another picture. (Not literally. I can’t paint.)

2013-12-24-gabba328.328.254.png

I had heard of Yo Gabba Gabba! long before my son was born nearly two years ago. I had seen it a few times for a few seconds while channel surfing, but as cool as I thought it was, I never thought to watch it regularly. Why would I? I wasn’t a parent and as trippy cool as it was, it just seemed wrong to tune in. Around that time, I also had a chance to play DJ at my friend’s son’s first birthday party, and play some tunes from the show. But, as wonderful as the kid-friendly tracks from The Roots and The Ting Tings (among others) were, I couldn’t keep them on my iTunes for very long. Fun side note: my friend Rich was dressed up as DJ Lance while I dressed up as Obi Wan Kenobi but referred to myself as DJ-Wan Kenobi. OK, maybe that’s not as innovative as I thought back then. Anyway, let me carry on. I promise there’s a point here. (I’m in too deep now to turn back on this post.)

Last summer, my wife and I started letting my son watch television here or there. We had planned to wait until he turned two, but fellow parents know how that can be almost impossible when there’s a toddler on one side of the room, and a big, shiny television on the other. That said, we’ve kept the TV-viewing down to a minimum but we make sure Gabbaland is a priority. We’ve all bonded over DJ Lance Rock and his pals Muno, Foofa, Brobee, Toodee, and Plex. Gabba has provided him with not just lively characters, sequences, and catchy songs, but with life lessons like don’t bite your friends or take a nap to recharge your batteries. Sound advice indeed. The show is innovative, fun, and just plain nuts with characters and vignettes that seem to come from Saturday Night Live’s Stefan’s imagination, but it’s an extremely valuable and educational show. Celebrity band and actor cameos help but the show is more than that.

So why am I shilling for a show that doesn’t need any help getting eyeballs tuned to it? The answer is quite simply Arcade Fire. Um, now I’ve lost you. Let me get you back. Last weekend, I took my family to the Beacon Theatre in New York City to see DJ Lance and the gang perform their A Very Awesome – Yo Gabba Gabba! Live – Holiday Show. The experience – from the minute we left the train station to the moment we arrived in the legendary New York venue – far exceeded all the wonderful feelings I had felt standing outside of the Brooklyn warehouse with my mask on. Look, seeing a band you love is great, but watching a show your child loves through his eyes of wonder is always going to top it. It helped that the show was so tip top on every level. From DJ Lance arriving on stage in a sleigh to the Gabba Gang recreating wonderful moments on the show like decorating a Christmas tree to Biz Markie presenting his funky beat of the day, it was a magical show – or as they’d say an “AAAAAAAAWESOME” show. If I was a toddler, this would’ve been my Beatles moment. It nearly was. Who would’ve guessed in all those years I was smitten to see my favorite band live that the moment I’d finally get to see them would be eclipsed a month later by a clumsy red cyclops named Muno?

About A-Sides Music
Jon Chattman’s “A-Sides Music” series was established in August 2011 and usually features artists (established or not) from all genres performing a track, and discussing what it means to them. This informal series focuses on the artist making art in a low-threatening, extremely informal (sometimes humorous) way. No bells, no whistles — just the music performed in a random, low-key setting followed by an unrehearsed chat. In an industry where everything often gets overblown and over manufactured, I’m hoping this is refreshing.

‘Supernatural’: Sam And Dean Are Born-Again Virgins, But Dean Isn’t Very Good At It

While investigating a case on “Supernatural,” Sam and Dean signed a pledge to reclaim their virginity. They were doing it in an attempt to infiltrate a prayer group of other “virgins.” Several members had recently gone missing and the boys were looking for clues within the group. But at their first meeting, they were asked what made them want to be born-again virgins.

Sam gave a fairly straightforward answer, but Dean is too sexually charged. He couldn’t help but admit how great sex felt, and when he started talking about it in more intimate detail, the other women in the group started getting all hot and bothered. Sam had to rein in his brother before the meeting got completely derailed.

Dean’s story must have worked some magic, though. It wasn’t an hour later that he was bedding the teacher — a reformed porn star — and becoming victim to the Roman goddess Vesta along the way. At least this allowed Sam and Jody Mills to come to their rescue and take down the goddess.

The sexually charged “Supernatural” airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. EST on The CW.
