Girl Bullied Over ‘Star Wars’ Gets Weird Al On Her Side

A girl bullied for loving “Star Wars” has the Force and Weird Al Yankovic with her.

Layla Murphy, 8, met the parody star at a concert recently after the 501st Legion, a “Star Wars” costume group with a charitable streak, helped her out.

Layla is yet another young girl who was teased at school for liking Star Wars amongst other "boy" things. As a result of…

Posted by The 501st Legion on Tuesday, August 11, 2015

Girls at Layla’s Norfolk, Virginia, school teased her, saying that “Star Wars” was for boys, CNN reported. She eventually asked her mother if she could stop wearing her “Star Wars” gear, including an R2-D2 jacket.

“She was asked if she was turning into a boy,” her mother, Nicolette Molina, told CNN.

A member of the 501st Legion who had met Layla at a fan convention was told of the kid’s troubles by Molina and summoned the Internet to send Layla support and “Star Wars” souvenirs. It was all to reassure Layla to be herself.

Then the 501st came through with perhaps the coolest gesture of all.

“Taking it one step further, Layla became the next recipient of the custom Stormtrooper armor originally built for another girl (Katie Goldman) who was in a similar situation,” the group wrote on Facebook.

A fully costumed Layla met Yankovic, who apparently mingles with denizens of the galaxy far, far away …

… and is also known for his “Star Wars” parodies, MTV noted.

Don’t listen to those bullies, Layla. “Star Wars” can be enjoyed by the entire universe.

Young Han Solo ‘Star Wars’ Spinoff To Be Helmed By ‘Lego Movie’ Directors

“Star Wars” and Legos were practically made for each other, as the “Force Awakens” Lego remake trailer proved. And now, the duo behind “The Lego Movie” are headed to a galaxy far, far away.

On Tuesday, StarWars.com announced that Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the team best known for the Oscar-nominated animated film, will direct a ”Star Wars” anthology film. The directors, who were also behind “21 Jump Street, “22 Jump Street” and “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs,” will direct a stand-alone film based on a young Han Solo. The spinoff, written by Lawrence Kasdan (“The Empire Strikes Back,” “Return of the Jedi,” “The Force Awakens”) and Jon Kasdan (“The First Time”), will reveal how Han Solo became the “smuggler, thief, and scoundrel” we first met at the Mos Eisley Cantina.

“This is the first film we’ve worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with,” Lord and Miller said in StarWars.com’s press release. “We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us. This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you’ve loved since before you can remember having dreams at all.” Well said.

According to Entertainment Weekly, a Han Solo origin film, which was first rumored two years ago, was reportedly going to be one of the first films in the “Star Wars” anthology series. However, “Rogue One” from director Gareth Edwards, was pushed up as the first spinoff so as not to confuse fans after Harrison Ford’s appearance in “The Force Awakens.”

Before the young Han Solo spinoff hits theaters on May 25, 2018, there’s lots of “Star Wars” to look forward to. J.J. Abrams’ “The Force Awakens” will open Dec. 18, followed by “Rogue One” on Dec. 16, 2016. There’s also the second “Star Wars” stand-alone film, which director Josh Trank left in May, as well as a separate rumored Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off

Floor Games; a companion volume to “Little Wars

H.G. Wells had so much fun playing with his children on the floor of their playroom, he decided to write a jovial little book to inspire other parents in their pursuit of quality time with the kids. While the raw materials available from hobby stores of his day were woefully short of the variety and quality of what can be bought easily now, he and his sons created their own worlds to rule. This short work describes two games of imagination played out upon the floor of his home – an archipelago of islands, and a thoroughly integrated city, conveniently organized with two mayoral positions for his sons “G.P.W.” and “F.R.W.” While the toy people appearing in their worlds were often of martial nature, Wells decided to leave decription of military games to a later book: “Little Wars.

It’s akin to putting a coin into a diner jukebox except the jukebox is out in cyberspace. But has increasing copyright protection gone too far in keeping the music from the masses? The authors show how the online music industry will establish the model for digital distribution, cultural access, and consumer privacy. Digital Music Wars explores the far-reaching implications of downloading music in an in-depth and insightful way.

Finding the Force of the Star Wars Franchise: Fans, Merchandise, and Critics

Used – In 1977 a single film called Star Wars exploded on the consciousness of the world. Since then the franchise, created by George Lucas, has become a global entertainment corporation. The merchandise of the original trilogy was largely confined to toys and games, but those games have since become computerized, the toys more sophisticated, and Star Wars has moved into the multi-media environment of the twenty-first century in ways unimaginable in the long-ago world of 1977. Star Wars Tech vs. Star Trek Tech: Who Wins?

Which is the more technologically advanced civilization–the Federation of Star Trek or the Galactic Republic of Star Wars?: originally appeared on Quora: The best answer to any question. Ask a question, get a great answer. Learn from experts and access insider knowledge. You can follow Quora on Twitter, Facebook, and Google+.

2015-06-10-1433966292-6075391-1.jpg

Answer by Todd Gardiner

Let’s compare the two, side-by-side.

Transportation

We have hyper engines that go through hyperspace compared to warp drives that travel through normal space at FTL speeds. Technical data books indicate that the speeds and range of hyper drives are greater, however.

We have also repulsor craft that hover over the ground in the Empire, but not much is shown of Federation ground transport, although anti-grav units are used to move heavy objects. But the Federation has one edge: teleportation.

I’m going to consider them even here, based on having different advantages.

Energy Generation

Both empires seem to be able to produce unlimited power for their needs. The amount directed to any one use might be limited, but fuel seems to be endless. While the exact fuel for the Empire is unclear, it seems to be on-par with the Federation’s antimatter engines (although often at much larger scales, e.g. The Death Star). Another tie.

Communication

Both spacefaring civilizations have FTL communication that is not instantaneous at long distances. There are language translators that work in real time in the Federation, but these might just be for explorers. Citizens of the Empire seem to prefer being polyglot, but protocol droids are available for translation. Slight edge to the Federation here. (+1/2)

Manufacturing

The Federation is able to use replicators to nearly instantly produce food, durable goods and tools. Apparently it cannot produce all elements and molecules, perhaps needed a “base supply” of matter to convert into finished items, rather than just converting energy into matter directly. But holodecks have shown that it can instantly produce and break down the matter it works with.

The Empire, especially on the frontier, depends on trade. The movement of rare resources and finished goods is the center of their economy, indicating that they have no similar manufacturing capability. Plus one for the Federation.

Construction

Both civilizations build large spaceships in orbit. While the Federation can produce starbases which are large cities, the Empire makes Star Destroyers and was able to produce two Death Stars (one in secret). It seems that Empire construction methods are superior. Plus one for the Empire.

Military

Ground troops for both civilizations make use of hand-held energy weapons, some of which are powerful enough to vaporize their target, although the later are not commonly used (too few shots?) Neither seem to use personal energy shields.

Vehicles similarly use weapons the scale-up with the size of the vehicle, although vehicles are large enough that they can supply the energy needed to maintain shields that defend against energy weapons. The extremely large size of Empire ships mean large shields, thus fighters are more heavily used to penetrate the shields physically and then deliver weapons attacks. But the two seem to be on-par technologically here and I don’t see one side having an advantage over the other, should they fight each other with the same mass of ships or number of ground troops with air support.

Medical Technology

Severe injuries that do not result in brain death seem to be reparable. For some reason the Federation seems to be plagued with hundreds of rare and hard to identify diseases on its border (more often across it, perhaps). But they are able to treat them with a minimum of fatalities.

The Empire has a greater use of cybernetics (Repli-Limb Prosthetic Replacements), although it is unclear if this is cultural or if they lack some sort of limb regeneration technology that the Federation might be using off camera. On the other hand, Gordi did have cybernetic sight…

Both are also known to use cloning technology (in secret) and to genetically modify members for specialty purposes (again, rarely).

Lack of firm details here results in another tie.

Robotics and Computing

The Empire has a love of creating seemingly sentient robots to function as servants. The Federation has produced many robots, but does not tend to use them alongside human crews. Use in construction and other off-camera activities seems to be the primary use.

But then, the two sentient robots (Data and Lore) are afforded full human rights (and criminal responsibility for their actions), possibly unlike in the Empire. Certainly the difficulty in production is not rewarded by an economic return of gaining a specialized servant.

The Federation does seem to prefer using semi-sentient computers for their starships, however. There is no sign that The Empire does this with their ships. In fact, you often need a droid to interface with the ship computer.

In the end, a small advantage to the Empire (+1/2)

[Update: the new Star Trek movie has an apparently robotic crewman on the bridge of the Enterprise. Perhaps they are ret-conning to incorporate “droids”.]

Field Manipulation

Both empires have mastered the control of projected fields, artificial gravity, ship integrity fields and so on. Shield generators are standard gear for starships and can be placed in ground installations. Some cloaking technology exists for both, as does projecting holograms.

Another tie.

“Social” Technology

Although this is not being considered here, I would like to point out that the smaller Federation has made use of social institutions which are more “advanced” than the Empire. The Federation is a non-discriminating, post-scarcity economy which no longer uses money and is interested in the betterment of all of its citizens equally. The Empire exists as a feudal state (or Republic, before and after the rise of the Empire) with slavery common, an unequal sharing of resources, and a culture that accepts bounty hunters and smugglers, at least on the fringes of civilization.

Final Result: A tie.

The Federation has transporters, personal translators, holodecks and replicators.

The Empire has droids, faster/further warp drive travel, massive construction projects, energy generation that scales linearly with its construction projects, and cybernetics.

Also keep in mind that the Empire is much, much larger. It spans the entire galaxy. There are civilizations in the Federation’s galaxy whose technology dwarfs both the Federation and the Empire.

Party In A Galaxy Far, Far Away At This ‘Star Wars’ Cantina Pop Up

We can hear the cantina song already.

Immersive events company Secret Cinema is known for lovingly bringing classic films to life. Last year, the group recreated suburban Hill Valley of “Back To The Future” fame in London, with impressive attention to detail and simultaneous live performances of key scenes onscreen. This summer, though, they’re pulling out all the stops, bringing “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back” to merry old England.

star wars cantina

True to its name, many details of this year’s event are secret. But we do know this year’s ticket holders are getting a bonus: a chance to visit the Mos Eisley cantina, the pirate city’s seediest watering hole, from the planet Tatooine. As a sort of sideshow to the main event, those with tickets will receive a message revealing the cantina’s location, and be encouraged to come in costume. Because, oh yeah, everyone is assigned their own character. Participation in Secret Cinema events is key — audience members will be part of the Rebel Alliance. There’s even a shop open in East London for participants to pick up costume paraphernalia. (We said this thing was fun, not cheap.)

The Secret Cinema crew has invited audience members into the world of film since 2007, with over 40 productions to date.

“We’re trying to blur the line,” creative director Fabian Riggall told The Huffington Post. “What is the audience and what is the performance?”

Car Safety Wars

Car Safety Wars

Car Safety Wars is a gripping history of the hundred-year struggle to improve the safety of American automobiles and save lives on the highways. Described as the “equivalent of war” by the Supreme Court, the battle involved the automobile industry, unsung and long-forgotten safety heroes, at least six US Presidents, a reluctant Congress, new auto technologies, and, most of all, the mindset of the American public: would they demand and be willing to pay for safer cars? The “Car Safety Wars” were at first won by consumers and safety advocates. The major victory was the enactment in 1966 of a ground breaking federal safety law. The safety act was pushed through Congress over the bitter objections of car manufacturers by a major scandal involving General Motors, its private detectives, Ralph Nader, and a gutty cigar-chomping old politician. The act is a success story for government safety regulation. It has cut highway death and injury rates by over seventy percent in the years since its enactment, saving more than two million lives and billions of taxpayer dollars. But the car safety wars have never ended. GM has recently been charged with covering up deadly defects resulting in multiple ignition switch shut offs. Toyota has been fined for not reporting fatal unintended acceleration in many models. Honda and other companies have-for years-sold cars incorporating defective air bags. These current events, suggesting a failure of safety regulation, may serve to warn us that safety laws and agencies created with good intentions can be corrupted and strangled over time. This book suggests ways to avoid this result, but shows that safer cars and highways are a hard road to travel. We are only part of the way home.

Here’s Who Ben Mendelsohn Wants To Play In ‘Star Wars’ If Those Rumors Are True

Ben Mendelsohn is having quite the moment, and if those “Star Wars” rumors end up being true, he’s bound to become a household name in Hollywood.

The Australian actor has been well-known back home since he was a teenager, but you’ve likely seen him more and more recently in American films and TV shows. He was killed by Bane in “The Dark Knight Rises,” played Jessa’s father in HBO’s “Girls,” and appeared alongside Brad Pitt in “Killing Them Softly.”

This year alone, Mendelsohn’s credits include Netflix’s “Bloodline,” Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut “Lost River,” gambler film “Mississippi Grind ” and indie Western “Slow West.” Let’s also not forget that he might star alongside Felicity Jones in “Star Wars: Rogue One.”

In John Maclean’s feature film debut, “Slow West,” Michael Fassbender (who previously worked with Maclean on two short films), plays Silas, a mysterious traveler headed west in 16th-century Colorado. Silas helps 16-year-old Scottish boy Jay Cavendish (Kodi Smit-McPhee) on his journey to find the girl he loves until they run into Mendelsohn’s Payne, a villainous leader of a gang of bounty hunters.

The Huffington Post sat down with Mendelsohn at the Tribeca Film Festival last month to discuss the wardrobe he took home from “Slow West,” who he’d like to play in the “Star Wars” universe, and his bizarre dance in “Lost River.”

slow west mendelsohn

I loved “Slow West.” It’s so beautifully made.
Yeah, [Maclean] did really well, didn’t he? It’s beautifully shot. He’s got something, that guy. And Fassbender found him, or they found each other. So I just got asked on board when it was all in its shape and I have a little turn in it.

You don’t show up in too many scenes, but when Payne is on screen he definitely makes an impression.
This, I like this. And that coat [points to the film poster].

Payne’s coat is amazing! Did you get to keep it?
I have that coat. I have it sitting on a mannequin at home. I don’t have memorabilia, but try to take a bit of wardrobe, usually because they dress me better than I dress myself. But that coat, that’s a thing of beauty. I’m very proud of it.

Are you going to wear it around?
Yeah, I suppose I might bust it out in moments of great bravery or just deep cold. I did wear it for the premiere in Sundance.

What was it like working with Fassbender?
Michael had a lot of stuff to do. It was all drunk hoo-ha and boy, he did some incredibly dangerous things around a fire, which aren’t in the [final] cut. There was some falling, some drunken shenanigans near fires and rocks, sh*t that I was going, “Oh, f**k.” But there’s a fearlessness to the way he works that is pretty admirable. And Kodi [Smit-McPhee], there’s such a delicateness to him. When he starts acting, he feels like gossamer. It was a good couple of days.

tv show gifs
Image via Tumblr

You’ve been so well-known in Australia, but now you’re finally having a breakthrough in the U.S. What’s that feel like?
It’s cool. It’s been a great several years. I came here for a very, very long time and just couldn’t get any sort of traction going. There were a couple of people who liked me, but it didn’t translate into anything that was employment based. I like to think that what really helped it was the one-two punch of “Animal Kingdom” and either “Place Beyond the Pines” or “Killing Them Softly.” Those combined really seemed to set some wind in the sails. It’s been a dreamy couple of years.

I bet. And now there’s those “Star Wars” rumors …
Yeah, there are those rumors.

So, are they just rumors?
They — I can definitively and honestly say to you that I have no job yet that I know of to go to. That may change. I would be very happy if that came to pass, but at this stage it’s just chatter.

Ideally, if you were in it, what character would you want to play?
It would depend. I think that the Empire has such room. We only know of a few people on the Empire side of the fence. “Star Wars” is populated by so many great types, who wouldn’t want to be a Han Solo kind of dude? And then you’ve got the whole Luke strain. I don’t think that they’re likely to — I’d be thrilled, actually, if they were looking at me for a Skywalkery-type of a number. But yeah, there’s a lot.

You also worked with Gosling again in “Lost River,” where you have singing and dancing scenes. Had you ever done something like that before?
No, I’ve never sung before. That’s me doing my Frankie Laine impersonation. There’s a little film I did where I sing a bit, but nothing like that. And the dance was something we just figured out very last minute just before we were going to shoot the scene. We knew we had it coming up and I went down there and we put on a A$ AP Rocky track and just danced off.

That’s even more bizarre because that’s totally different from the song playing in the scene.
That’s right, it’s not [the same]. But if you ever want to hear what it was that I was dancing to, it is “F**king Problems.”

Did you know the song before that?
Yeah, I was familiar with the opus. I’m a reasonably — I have my phases — but I really like music.

“Slow West” is now playing in select theaters.

“We gladly accept @juleshough #thanksgivingdancewars challenge,” Kate wrote on her Instagram account. “Let’s make this happen @caradelevingne #oliverhudson #wyattrussell #bostonrussell #pa #dancebattle #UptownFunk And that’s my Mom counting us in in the background.”

Suzan-Lori Parks Returns From the Wars Triumphant

2014-10-28-FatherWar0641rR.jpg

Father Comes Home from the Wars (Parts 1, 2 & 3). Photo: Joan Marcus

“Dark is the night, long is the day” sings a balladeer at the beginning of Suzan-Lori Parks’ masterful Father Comes Home from the Wars (Parts 1, 2 & 3) at the Public. Since the ushers — along with the ticket-takers and elevator attendants — have all warned us that the first act runs nearly two hours, we might well hear this as “long is the play.” Long, perhaps; but as soon as Parks draws you into her epic, you’re likely to lose any notion of time.

The almost three hours of Father Comes Home from the Wars will leave you eager for more. A good thing, as there is more; namely Parts 4-9. It is only a foolhardy or brilliant playwright who will scope out a scheme which will require the erstwhile theatergoer to buy multiple tickets in order to see one complete work; The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby, Angels in America and The Orphans’ Home Cycle spring to mind. While it is too early to place Father Comes Home from the Wars in such company — Parks has yet to write all nine of the interrelated one-acts, after all — the first three parts are overloaded with soaring language, trenchant philosophy and provocative debate.

A Measure of a Man starts with a Greek chorus of four “less than desirable” slaves standing on what passes for the local street corner — it is 1862, on a dusty plantation in West Texas — betting on whether Hero, the #1 slave, will chose to go to the War as Boss-Master’s servant-slave. (It’s a society without money; one fellow bets his boots, another his spoon.) We begin to see the universality of this journey — and this cycle of plays — when we learn that Hero’s wife is named Penny, and that his cross-eyed dog is Odd-See (or Odyssey); there is no Ulysses present, at least early on, other than that marauding general up North.

What makes the burgeoning evening most exciting is that Parks’ Greek drama of the American Civil War, set very much in period, is contemporary; there is enough in the characters and the dialogue — even in the costumes, with some actors drifting on wearing basketball sneakers — to tell us that Father Comes Home is a play of ideas and freedom that directly speaks to us, here in the 21st century.

The expansive nature of the cycle becomes apparent in the second one-act, A Battle in the Wilderness. The time is later that year, the place a shaded area in the middle of nowhere, the middle of no man’s land. A Confederate colonel — Hero’s owner — is holding a Union captain captive in a wooden cage. Or is he a Union captain? Hero stands guard, but the slave has far more in common with the captive. Parks corners her characters into discussions of freedom, slavery and worth. How much is Hero, in fact, worth? He pridefully considers his monetary value; eight hundred dollars, or isn’t he really worth a thousand? If the South loses, though, he is free — and not worth a dollar. Which is the better existence? And what if he escapes? Is he in effect stealing eight hundred dollars from his hated, hateful master? If slavery is an immoral institution, what does it mean for a slave to be true to his owner?

2014-10-28-FatherWar0006rR.jpg

Father Comes Home from the Wars (Parts 1, 2 & 3). Photo: Joan Marcus

After intermission comes the third play, The Union of My Confederate Parts. This is Hero’s homecoming from the War in 1863, not as a hero but in defeat. (The War rages on but Boss-Master has been killed in battle.) Penny/Penelope has waited for him, although there are a couple of surprises in store. There are also some runaway slaves hiding on the plantation; as Part 3 ends, they escape — not knowing that they are technically free, courtesy of the just-declared Emancipation Proclamation. There is much cross-discussion of loyalty and bonds, but the answers are never easy. Parks ups the ante in this section by adding an element of outrageous fantasy that is mighty farfetched, but it works so deliciously well that we are sent out into the night eager for Parts 4, 5 & 6.

Director Jo Bonney (of Small Engine Repair and By the Way, Meet Vera Stark), who has been part of Father Comes Home since 2009, has done a masterful job and is clearly an intrinsic part of the project, which is a coproduction of the Public (Oscar Eustis) and the American Repertory Theatre (Diane Paulus). All deserve credit for the work they’ve done and the work yet to do, as does the design team of Neil Patel (sets), Esosa (costumes) and Lap Chi Chu (lighting). The ten-person cast of relatively little-known actors does wonderfully well, with standout turns by Sterling K. Brown (Hero), Jenny Jules (Penny), Jeremie Harris (Homer), Louis Cancelmi (Smith, the captive soldier) and Jacob Ming-Trent in a perfectly droll impersonation.

At this point in the creation of the cycle, A Battle in the Wilderness — with its concentration on slavery and freedom, leading to a sudden (and unexpected) moment of unharnessed emotion — is the strongest of the plays. The Union of My Confederate Parts is a close second, thanks in part to that fantastical whimsy which provides clarity. Parks is already a Pulitzer-winner for her 2001 play Topdog/Underdog, and a winner of a MacArthur “Genius” Grant. Father Comes Home from the Wars — and we have no way of knowing whether the cycle will stay in the Civil War era or move on to other prominent American wars — is on track to be monumental.

.

Father Comes Home from the Wars (Parts 1, 2 & 3), a new play by Suzan-Lori Parks, opened October 28, 2014 and continues through November 16 at the Public’s Anspacher Theater

‘Leaked’ Star Wars Footage Is Awesome… And Fake

Someone’s having fun with computer graphics.

A fan-made video billed as “leaked” footage from the set of the new “Star Wars” film shows Imperial Forces taking over Germany’s Frankfurt Airport.

“Looks like the Story of Star Wars plays on Earth too in the next Episode,” YouTube user Frank Wunderlich writes in the description. “I took these pictures on my Flight back from the States to Germany at the Frankfurt Airport.”

The clips shows spacecraft such as Imperial Shuttles as well as AT-STs and even a giant AT-AT marching along the runway as Stormtroopers patrol the area.

At one point, an Imperial Star Destroyer is viewable in the background. At another, the Death Star is seen in the sky above.

No, it’s not really leaked footage. But it’s safe to say the Force is strong with this one.

First Chewbacca Photo From ‘Star Wars’ Set Is A Selfie With Bob Iger… Maybe

It’s the selfie seen ’round the Galaxy.

A photo posted to the official Star Wars Instagram account on Sunday shows Disney boss Bob Iger posing with Chewbacca — and it’s been racing through Twitter, Imgur, Reddit and more with all the speed of a smuggler trying to make the Kessel Run.

Online, many have speculated that the photo could be the first image of a character on the set of “Star Wars: Episode VII,” which is going into production in London. Some have even postulated that the man in the costume is none other than Peter Mayhew, the actor who portrays Chewie in the films and is reprising the role in “Episode VII,” and that the image was taken at Pinewood Studios in London, where portions of the movie will be shot.

However, the only description on the Instagram image is “Chairman’s new co-pilot. #StarWarsDay,” and Mayhew’s Twitter account has been silent for a few days.

Stay tuned.
